Everybody at American Van Lines was fabulous. If I had to move 2100 miles again, I'd do it with them.

A long distance move can be stress-free. Who knew? American Van Lines was prompt, professional, fast, careful, and stayed in touch throughout. A DOT by-the-book move. We were very impressed by Peter **, who gave us our estimate as well as lots of little tips and tricks for packing and saving money. Barbara **, our moving coordinator, kept us informed of the scheduling and progress of the move and made sure we were satisfied. Highly recommended.

Communication prior to the move needs to be improved. Response time with questions, etc. were slow. We had to call to confirm the day before we moved that everything was on track. We called around noon. The coordinator did not call us until 4:00 pm the day before the move. However, the actual moving guys did a fabulous job. We had a few really heavy pieces and they handled them wonderfully.

American Van Lines came out, did an inventory and gave us a price. We discussed what we would move and what they would move and they were very helpful. Then they sent us a proposal, we signed it and sent it back. The move was about four miles. We purchased a new house so we had quite a bit of furniture and heavy stuff to move so, we decided to use movers this time. And we had a brand new baby so needed help because we were busy taking care of the child. The delivery crew did great and had our entire house moved a few minutes early. The guys that moved us did very well and we were very pleased. Great service. Easy move.

We were moving to a location closer to my work. A gentleman from American Van Lines came by and gave us a quote. From there, we met three other van lines. We picked American Van Lines mostly based on pricing and the quality of the meeting that my wife had with their guy. Their moving team was excellent, too. We couldn’t have asked for a better one.

We used American Van Lines for my daughter's move from Florida to Colorado and they did a great job. After they put somebody in charge of what I need, he asked me a lot of questions and sent me a questionnaire with the size of my moving. I completed the list and assisted me, and gave me feedback all the time. He gave me a price and told me what was included. It was not the cheapest one but I didn’t want to go to the cheapest one.
The people who came to pick up the stuff were very clean and nice. They had the things on their feet, so they won’t stain the carpet. The delivery crew was also very good and efficient. They were asking us where to put the things. They were all very much on time, and protected the walls. They were also very thorough. I provided them both my cellphone and house number and they know that I work so they asked my preference for the time that they could get back with me. I told them to text me from 8-5, and so they did. I would definitely recommend them and would probably use them again when my daughter moves again.

I was looking for a moving company to move my parents from their home in New York to an assisted living facility in New Hampshire. I have used American Van Lines before, and I also researched the internet and they have the best reviews. The rep who assisted me with my purchase was pleasant and helpful. She was friendly and was able to answer my questions, too. The moving consultant who helped plan the details of the move was also wonderful. My parents were very happy with the moving crew as well. They said they were fast, polite, and helpful.

My mother had a massive stroke and done things on her own for three years. Finally, she said "I can't do this anymore without family help." So, I moved her from Oregon to Georgia. I did a Google search and saw that American Van Lines was ranking in ConsumerAffairs. Aside from AVL, I also got a car transport company from there and they were both wonderful. I couldn't have had a better experience with both companies. AVL's rep kept calling me and checking because we are trying to figure out when they would be coming. It was already 30 days later and we arrived way before they did. Other than that, it was great overall.

My husband was relocating. I talked to a rep from American Van Lines who was very helpful. We walked through each room. He helped me from having to go all the way back home to my house. The move was an 8-hour drive. The problems I had with the move include the truck not being quite big enough. The house was full and I added some things, which was my fault. There were also two men who came. There weren't enough people to move our stuff. Then they had to come up here the same day. I was exhausted from helping them move the whole day, doing all these things and packing up. Then I had to drive up to Nashville and meet them up to put my stuff in storage. I understood that it was going to take some time to get up there. It wasn’t going to be an immediate thing. But otherwise, the two men that moved us were really great. They did a good job.

I came across American Van Lines when I looked at reviews on the internet. The move was pretty fast - it took six days. They came on a Tuesday, moved me from San Diego to Fort Walton Beach, and they delivered the following Monday. The moving coordinator was pretty good but there were a couple of times that he wasn't there when I called and sometimes he calls at 4 o'clock in the morning. I was moving out of San Diego and he was in California, and he forgets about the 3-hour time difference. The moving consultant was courteous. The moving crew also worked hard. We did the packing of our belongings but the crew wrapped our things in blankets to keep them safe and nothing was damaged.
The only issue I had was with the coordinator. He called me asking to change the dates for a day earlier so I adjusted all my appointments. However, the mover wasn't able to come on that day so I had to change all my appointments to later in the week. But then I talked to the mover the day he left and he said they also have other moves so it would probably be two weeks before my stuff gets there. I was fine with that but on Friday, when I was leaving, I got a text from them saying my stuff would be in on Monday. It's a cross-country drive so I wasn't trying to rush 12 hours of driving to get there on time. I asked them for one more day but they told me no. I was pretty upset about that because I adjusted my schedule to accommodate them but they refused to adjust theirs. But other than that, I was okay with it.

I was bringing back some possessions that belonged to my deceased parents from Charlotte, North Carolina to Madison, Wisconsin. The move went very smoothly from start to finish. The American Van Lines' moving coordinator was very personable on the phone. Also, the two drivers were absolutely incredible from the start. They were very knowledgeable, nice and friendly. I was not present at the start of the move because I was back in Wisconsin so I had someone standing in for me, and they spoke very highly of them. When I finally met them once they got to Madison, I would certainly agree with the person that was standing in for me in North Carolina. They were very willing to help out once they got here and where they have to move everything.

The coordinator was very helpful. She was pretty responsive and I never had a problem with her. I moved from Rancho Mirage, California to Meridian, Idaho, and they gave me a decent rate. Everybody was knowledgeable during planning the details of my move. The only issue that I had was they partnered with a company down in Rancho Mirage area. They were going to charge me a surcharge, which they were not supposed to, so I fought back. I had to make two or three phone calls and let them know that I wasn’t gonna pay it, and they said there wouldn’t be a charge. But other than that, it wasn’t difficult by any means. The movers were good, very polite and on time. It was a very pleasant experience.

The move was about 650 miles or so. I knew of American Van Lines in the military dozens of years ago. I moved a lot for a part of my life and when we needed to do another move, I knew the name of the firm and had used them before. I also went online to see who was out there and to get an idea of what some of the better moving companies are these days and American Van Lines was right up there.
Their rep, Anthony, was very helpful. I really enjoyed the way he approached the move and the confidence he had in working with me. I'd normally not pay my own way since it was usually the military paying. So I was a little more cash conscious as I went into this one. They had a good moving crew and worked well together. The chief of the crew was very informative and direct which was very helpful. He made it easy for me to understand and was conscious of getting the job done in the time available. I liked that interaction.
There's a little bit of a pro and a con. I was not immediately aware that I was going to need to have a short-haul truck at each end of this move in order to get from the house to where they could park the 18-wheeler. My awareness of this happened incrementally that is when they arrived and said, "Well, we couldn't get to you without renting another truck," which was an additional cost. There's not much of a way around this.
We had a big load and had minor problems. There were a few missing boxes and some damages to items within the boxes, all of which I packed so it could be blamed on me. If I'd been aware of the additional handling that I might have to pack for three loadings instead of one, it would've made me more conscious of how to pack. More information might have been helpful to me and might have reduced the damage that we found in some of the boxes. As for the missing boxes, I suspect they were so badly damaged that the crew decided to not to deliver them. It was overall a good experience. It was more than acceptable, although there were a few things that could've been more perfect.

I had a very good experience and I would definitely recommend American to anyone who was moving. I didn’t have a lot to do with the moving coordinator but the first gentleman I spoke with, Johnny, was excellent and really good. The gentleman that worked really didn’t seem like he cared that much and it could’ve been a personality but he didn’t appear that he really was that interested in my move. The delivery crew was wonderful, extremely courteous, efficient, very pleasant, and on time. In fact, they were a little bit early which surprised me very much. And I can’t say enough nice things about the drivers. They were one of the most pleasant parts of it because they were tops.
I was very pleased. In fact,I did a lot of research before I started on American because I talked to a lot of people and it was, “Oh, how great we are and how wonderful...” And then I checked on them but they were all really bad reviews. But American was the only company that I found that did not have any negative reviews.

Our move with American Van Lines worked out fine. My son ended his semester in law school in North Carolina and moved back home. My husband and I had personally moved all his stuff down there and then when he decided he was coming back home, we said we’re hiring a mover because we’re too old. I did all interactions with the moving coordinator and moving consultant all long-distance via email and it was fine and very easy. I didn’t have to go to North Carolina.
The day that they actually moved, we had really bad weather in our route. There was a bad snowstorm that ran across the country. But the crew were really polite and called and said, “We scheduled you for a certain day and we’re having bad weather. Your scheduled date might be delayed.” They kept on top of it, so it wasn’t like I didn’t know what was going on. When the crew came, it was like a thousand degrees below 0. It was freezing and snowing. I live in a townhouse and they parked way down the end of my street and carried this couch and all these crap into my house. They were organized and did their job and got out of my house. It was hard but they were good guys.

I made a tentative arrangement with a smaller local company. I left them with a deposit, and they didn't send anybody out to my house to actually look at the things that had to be moved, and that concerned me a little. In addition, they were pushing a schedule that seemed to me to be unnecessarily tight, so I decided to call another company. I looked through the yellow pages and recognized the name "American Van Lines". At first, I thought that the price was going to be exorbitant because they're a big, national company. I called them and they offered to send a representative to me. That sounded good to me. The rep came and he was very intelligent and professional, and we got along quite well. He gave me a quotation on the price, and it was actually maybe even a few dollars less than what I had been quoted by the previous company.
Then he gave me a schedule for the transfer and it included packing one day. They would put my goods in a locked truck inside their locked area for one night. I asked why, and he told me that federal law required the drivers not to work more than a certain number of hours. Then I realized what the previous company was doing. They were sneaky. They were going to push their drivers and my goods on that highway and it wasn't necessary. Then I told him how I really liked my experience with AVL because they're abiding by the law and taking care of my goods. Plus, they gave me a decent price, so we were on the same page. The gentlemen who came to pack my goods was the same one who wound up driving the truck, and he actually managed to arrive before me. He and the young man who was with him were very nice and friendly. They got my goods in with the minimum of hassle and I was quite pleased with the whole experience.

I contacted American Van Lines on a move from Boston to Arizona. I found them through an online website where you'd put in information and different movers would contact you with their bids. Some movers bid by square footage while other movers bid by weight, which is what you're supposed to do rather than square footage, and this company did by weight so I went with them.
I had a one-bedroom apartment and they came out and loaded it up in a small van. I thought that was the company but it turned out it wasn't. They took my material to this other company in New Jersey, where it was held in storage until such times that they had a van that actually went to Phoenix. So I was delayed in even getting my material and when I got it, they gave me stuff that didn't belong to me, lost an end table of mine and had numerous pieces of art that were broken. They said I could file a claim but I'd have to show pictures of it. I have thrown all those stuff away by then so I couldn't do anything and I've let it go. But I would never use them. They were really shady and absolutely horrible. Not once did they tell me that they subcontract out to a smaller company. Next time I would go with a national carrier like United or Atlas.
Their staff was another problem. I can never get in touch with the moving coordinator. That person was always busy or not available and ended up, unbeknownst to me, not working for the company anymore. So American Van Lines assigned me to another coordinator, who never got in touch with me either. So it's poor communication all the way around. On the other hand, the consultant gave me an overview but never told me once that they subcontracted out, when the movers would be there and that type of stuff.
The moving crew was weird too. There were two moving crews. There was the initial moving crew that came in a 24-foot van and they loaded up all my stuff without any problem. They were all foreign, like Russian or Ukrainian or something like that, and were efficient. They picked it off and never told me where my furniture and everything was going to go. it was only after the fact that I found out it was sitting in New Jersey in a warehouse after I had moved to Arizona and got in touch with American Van Lines to ask where my stuff was at. They had to do some research to find it.
When they did, they got it loaded on a regular 18-wheeler moving van who came out. The driver and his partner were from like Somalia, spoke very little English and did a horrible job unpacking my material. They were so haphazard and gave me other people's clothing and furniture. And when I called American Van Lines back about them they never came and picked it up. I ended up taking it to a Goodwill after it's sitting in my garage for three months. I also talked with other people who had used this company and they said they never got their furniture or clothing.
They also took my motorcycle apart, which really pissed me off. Then the two movers that came to deliver my stuff said they were college students but they spoke very little English. They spoke mostly Arabic. And one guy kept asking me if I wanted to give him my old iPhone. He wanted to know if I wanted to adopt his sister so she could come out here and live in the United States. It was the worst experience I've ever had.
I would never ever recommend this company. They are a very fly-by-night company and then they try to defend themselves by saying that it's common to subcontract out. And I said that I've moved all across the country numerous times and I've never had a subcontractor. I've always had the company and always had the people that would pack up and put all the stuff in the van to be the same people that would meet me at my new destination and unpack for me. And that wasn't the case here at all. Then they became defensive when I filed a statement and lambasted them. The actual vice president of the company called me back and almost threatened me by saying that they were a reputable company, how dare I write about them the way I did, that they would never do anything like that and basically called me a liar.

I was very happy with all the people that I interacted with at American Van Lines. The only problem was that our stuff was delivered about two months later than I had anticipated. I was promised around November and it didn't get there until January. They should be more upfront with the window. I was prepared for a two-month window, but if I were a family moving, it could've been an issue. The movers, at every level, was fabulous. They took very good care of the furniture. It was a pleasure to work with them and they more than made up for the problem. I would recommend American Van Lines to a friend but I would tell them not to count on the window.

It took over a year for American Van lines to reach out to us, but we did come to a resolution. American Van lines gave us $650 for the over-weight fee, lost items, and our damaged items. Please be cautious when using American Van Lines and make sure you receive a price for the weight.
Original Review: April 7, 2016
Our experience with American Van Lines initially was good. But the further I got into it, the worse it got. Every time we turned around, it was an additional charge for this and that. Originally, when we did the search and we first went to them, all they want to know is the weight and not the volume. So, we went in and we gave them how many rooms we had and how far the move was. So the first experience was good - from then on, it went south.
When we went and gave them how many rooms we have, they guesstimate how much the furniture and how much weight we have. They come back and it was so low - it was unbelievable. I told them I'm not a professional mover but I ought to know that there's a lot more weight than that by what the stuff I told them. I have a three-car garage and one car is stuffed with gardening stuff. I also told them that we have two couches and all the stuff. I went back over it with him and told him that I know they'll try to ding me at the end where they'll charge me an astronomical amount 'cause I know that they're 2000 or 2500 pounds light, at least. So, he recalculated, he went back and of course the price went up. From our initial start on this thing, it was $4,600 and by the time we got through with it, it was $9,600 with damaged furniture.
Also, American Van Lines has no employees other than the people who sell the move. None of the truckers worked for them. They sent out a crew from Chicago to pack us up. And when they did, they came out in a 1929 truck that had holes in it. They also charged us for every item. If they'd had told me that I needed shrink-wrap, I would've went and bought it myself and had paid probably a third of what it had cost.
We also had numerous items broken. We had a very expensive chest and they punched three holes on the back of it. They loaded it at my house, took it to Chicago, offloaded it, waited on this long-distance hauler to come. The long-distance hauler loaded it. He came to Dallas and couldn't get the truck in here so he offloaded it again into another smaller truck and brought it out. In all that time, they did plenty of destruction. And unless I buy insurance, they pay me a frivolous little amount and it's more trouble and frustration than it's worth to do it. Our experience was not good at all.

American Van Lines arrived on time to finish packing. Loading was completed in the allotted time with only three men. They completed the packing sheets and explained all the items moving. Contact was by telephone as to arrival at final destination which was perfect timing. Once again the task was completed as scheduled and the packing into the storage unit allowed for 1 unit instead of 2. That was truly based on their experience with packing. We are happy to be moved and pleased with our selection of American Van Lines. After the move we were contacted by customer service to let us know the final invoicing which was LESS than anticipated.

We had American Van Lines move our stuff from Florida to Texas. The rep initially called my husband and gave us the rate which was competitive with other companies I have dealt with. But then when I really needed to get in touch with her, she didn't ever seemed to be available. She was supposed to be able to provide me with the information about the weight, but it was a struggle to get that information either from her or the driver.
The moving crew got us to where we needed to go in a timely fashion. They complained the whole time that all of our stuff were too heavy. They were also supposed to be prepared to pack up the mirrors and pictures but they were not. We had to keep some of the stuff in storage for almost a year and when we got them out, we found out that some of them were damaged. So they got us from point A to point B, but will we consider using them again? The answer is no.

The moving consultant was pleasant, knowledgeable and got all the details correct. The crew, from packing to delivery, according to my friend who spoke Spanish, was terrific. I asked them if they were fine unloading the trunk of my car which they did and they were awesome. Though, it was more expensive than I expected. I had to be in storage for a few weeks because I didn’t find a place by the time I needed to move and it was great. My experience couldn’t be better.

The rep of American Van Lines who assisted us was very helpful and walked us through the whole thing - we’ve never done a long-distance move before so we didn’t know what to expect. Everything worked out great, the only downside was that they didn’t come on the day that they said they were going to come due to the malfunction of the truck itself and no one from American Van Lines called to tell us. They were supposed to be there early on Sunday and by 1:30, we were still there waiting on the truck to come. So I finally called American Van Lines, then they gave me the phone number of the driver so I could coordinate with him directly. But once they got the truck fixed, everything else went absolutely smoothly.
The delivery crew also worked tirelessly. We did most of the packing ourselves but there was a specialty item - some artwork, a couple of pictures, and a mirror - things that we couldn’t pack ourselves and so, they packed it. They did everything and they just loaded all the boxes that we already packed up in no time. They’re already late a day but by the time they got there in three to four hours at the most, they had everything loaded. Also, they loaded my husband’s new golf cart and when it got here, there wasn’t a scratch on it. They also put everything where we wanted it. They were very professional and if I was going to move again, I wouldn’t call anyone else.

I was moving for a job relocation. I went online and one of the web hits was ConsumerAffairs and I saw American Van Lines there. The group that picked up all of my belongings in Massachusetts was an outsource company for American Van Lines, and my experience was not very positive. They misplaced a piece of artwork and did not tag things properly. I was not pleased with them. I did communicate immediately with American Van Lines. On the other hand, the group that delivered my belongings from storage in Dallas to my home in Texas was excellent and had attention to detail. The difference between their staff and the outsource staff was amazing.
AVL was very good and professional. When they realized that the outsourced company misplaced my artwork, they went to great lengths to help me find my missing artwork, and they did find it. I was very angry, but AVL did a great job locating it. So while it was a negative experience, I was very happy with how AVL approached it.

A friend of mine moved three of four months ago before I moved and told me about American Van Lines. The move was for two houses moving into one. We and my mother-in-law had to move altogether. Alan was the first rep we talked to. He looked at everything and gave us a guess as far as the weight and how much it would cost. He left all that in writing and when we’re ready to move, we called in.
American Van Lines did everything we asked them to do. We had packaged everything that they asked us to. We told them what were the things to wrap. They wrapped them up, put things in boxes, and moved it for us. When we got to the house, we told them where everything went and they put it for us. They pretty much helped us move everything around, so it’ll be easier for us because I can’t lift by myself. Unfortunately, it was raining that day so it made their job a little bit miserable, but they were able to do it. They’re very efficient, quick, and friendly.

They told me at maximum, it can take up to 10 days but it took more than 10 days. I spoke with the coordinator and interacted twice or thrice regarding why it is getting delayed, whatever reason it may be, but it was not good. It was more than 12 days I'm without my stuff. I chose American Van Lines because they had good reviews and resolution to problems they had was satisfactory. Once I chose this company communication was very good. The sales person Johnny was patient with me and answered all my questions. He was honest and sold me the right "move". Once the date was picked and the deposit was given I was contacted by Victor the moving coordinator. He was professional and kept me updated on both the pick-up and drop-off of the house contents.
The company, MBM Movers, they contracted out of NC was excellent! The movers themselves were neat, careful, courteous, detailed and personable. We haven't unpacked everything yet, but I was told there is time to do that and make sure everything is ok. If there are any problems there is time to make a claim. American Van Lines is no longer using Empire Moving Company (St. Louis, MO) because of the experience I had.
Original Review: March 31, 2016
I set up a move with American Van Lines for a move from Chicago, IL to Andover, KS. When I spoke to them on the phone originally I had not packed yet so I used their estimations of boxes and listed all my furniture for them. Closer to the move they called and asked if we had any changes. I said I wasn't home to count the boxes and they said to just reply to the email with any updates. I emailed them back the next day with the full number of boxes and some small items such as golf clubs that I had not included the first time. When the movers showed (outside of the promised window time) they said that they never got the updated list (American verified that even though it was sent to the correct email address, that somehow it did not come through). I resent them the list with confirmation that they got it.
The movers (Empire contracted company) left because they said they did not have enough room on the truck. American said they would send another truck in a few days that would definitely fit everything. The date got changed several times and then the same Empire movers returned again hours late and starting packing their truck. After spending 6 hours moving stuff around they decided that they did not have enough room and claimed that they never got the updated list. They were the same guys that came a few days before so they should have called American if they never got an updated list!!! At 10 pm they said that they would take what they have but that they were going to just leave the rest (which in a one bedroom + den they left the bed, mattress and box springs, the night stands, the two exercise machines, a floor lamp, mirror, dining room table with four chairs, and our bookcases).
Essentially they took boxes, and outdoor chair, our couches, and a stuffed chair (that they left black hand prints all over even though my husband told them to wash their hands after touching the outdoor chair because it was dirty from being outside). They are now sending a 3rd truck. My husband has taken off 3 days of work now. I have been in Kansas since the day of their first supposed pickup. Today is the last day of the month. Our rent is up today (we had the move scheduled for the 24th-26th). We will have to pay extra rent and get permission to be in the apartment for the movers to come get the rest of the stuff. And they just told my husband that the stuff they have already weighs 8000 lbs when the whole quote was 4300 lbs after it had been updated to include EVERYTHING (and the original quote was 3000 lbs). So I don't know if they are flat out lying about the weight? DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I AM IN TEARS.

I told them to bring a small truck and when they got there, they had a huge truck. So they told me that I needed to have it shuttled from my house out to the road. I had that done and at the end when they called me up to find out, they wanted to charge me like they had shuttled it, when I had to hire somebody else. They were delayed on the delivery for a big eight days and blamed it on the weather and other things. Always when I had question like why it was taking so long, they said they don't know which trucker is going and which route they're going until the last minute. I don't know how accurate they are but they had an answer for everything.

We actually had to make a second trip, which was unexpected and I was happy that that was able to get done. But it was a really rough move because there were so many items. It was 8 o’clock on a Friday night and I was happy that the representatives were as helpful as they were.
I was also happy with the fact that they were able to assemble the furniture because I had some custom-made bedroom sets that I could've never moved on my own, let alone taken apart, move, and reassemble without any damage. So the move was a lot less stressful being that I had a good company to assist me with the move. I would recommend them to a friend.

I was moving from North Carolina to Arizona. The consultant from American Van Lines, the physical interaction with their movers and getting it all together initially were all great. The crew did everything they needed to do. They wrapped stuff up and helped me. The problem I had was once they got my stuff, there was a lack of communication between the move from North Carolina to Arizona. The actual move from North Carolina to Arizona was a mess because of the lack of communication about giving the timeframe, the move, and getting back with me.
When the movers came, they were unable to load my Can-Am motorcycle, which has three wheels instead of two. And that was the bulk of my move, the bike and a couple of other things. I asked if they could knock something. They started to but then they changed their minds which irked my nerves 'cause that was when I had to pull extra out of my pocket to get my bike to Arizona. So I had to get somebody else to do it. I was sad about that part. But once I got that done with, I told them the amount of money I spent to get my bike to Arizona. From my understanding, was that when they take my stuff, they'll hold it until they get a timeframe and then they move my stuff there. I told them to call me in advance and let me know if they were doing that. I was in North Carolina handling business there and my wife was in Arizona doing the same -- getting rid of a house and moving into another one.
That's where the communication broke down. They went in to move my stuff and I didn't hear anything until two days. They said, "We're a day out from where you're at. You're gonna pay the rest of the balance, right?" I told them, "No! That's why I told you to call me well in advance, like maybe two or three weeks, so I can get my money together." It got into a big old mess with that and they had to put my stuff elsewhere in a storage thing, instead of the storage room that I had requested them to put it in. So they need to better communicate, especially for situations like that. Other than that, I would still recommend people to American Van Lines because the movers were great.

We needed to find a van to move my daughter from Texas to Massachusetts. We needed a national one, not a local one, and ended up with American Van Lines. The whole process was very easy. Everybody that we had any contact with explained what we needed to do, when we needed to do it and were very open to anything that we had a question about. They answered all our questions completely.
The moving crew were very friendly and they paid attention to everything because my daughter was moving some of her stuff out from the house but there's still somebody living there. And so, they did not get anything mixed up. They only took what we said and it was very good. Although it wasn't raining - they were very careful to put down a mat and protected wood in the flooring and even the wall. They also put something around the walls so nothing got burnt. I was impressed with that. We had a short turnaround time so we got to watch them working, even interacting with each other, and it seemed they had good teamwork. However, once it came to Massachusetts to drop things, we had some storms whipping through, and it took longer by a few days. There's just one guy coming back and the others never showed up. So he had to bring everything in himself. He was very friendly and a real nice guy.
They also told us that when we finished unpacking everything, and there's any problem or damages, we had a period of time to make the claim but to take our time doing it because we were only allowed to make one claim. My daughter, Marie, who was on that move will be submitting a claim for damages. We have the information on how to do that from the back of one of the multi-page copy things. All the paperworks are there. So that seems fairly clear on what procedure to follow and based on the experience that we had with them everything being clearly explained by everyone we talked to, I have no doubts that that's going to go through fine as well. There wasn't a whole lot of things that were damaged but we're not yet done going through all the boxes. It was a good experience, overall. I would definitely recommend them if I knew somebody that was going to be moving and needed a company to move him.

I went online to look at the best ratings and found American Van Lines. The person who helped me plan the move did very well. She kept in contact with me and worked with me through it. The only thing that I didn't like was at one point she gave me an estimate based on a minimum of 3000 pounds and there's no way to know how many pounds the move is going to be because you're not weighing things.
When the driver got there, I realized that I had probably underestimated how much I had. Even though it was exactly what I told her on the phone, I could tell I was getting charged more just based on the van driver's reaction because he was expecting so much more. I know that they were going to adjust it. After they quote you, they're not going to adjust it based on what you actually moved. I think I ended up overpaying for my move. But the moving crew was nice and very accommodating.
I had not tipped the driver only because I overpaid for my move and I'm feeling that his compensation was already covered. And I had given him two checks, one for him and one for the other mover but both checks got credited the same time so it made me feel as if he deposited both for himself. It's what it looked like and it's something I didn't like.

I chose American Van Lines based on good reviews on this site. I wish I hadn't. 4 damaged goods and one expensive missing item later, the hell of using this company has really hit home. Here's a list of crappy things that went on with this move. PRICE: Exorbitant. If you've got a small Brooklyn apartment with no kids... get ready to spend 3 months pay, basically $10,000 to get your things to another state.
PICK UP TEAM: Unprofessional movers. The squad that picked up our items were not American Van Lines employees but hired hands contracted for day work. They kept a terrible inventory log, somehow missing my coffee table and shelf (both wrecked in the move), all marked down with indecipherable scribbles on that press-through white/red/pink paper that you haven't seen since 1987. Their system is totally ancient and leads to mistakes mistakes mistakes for you down the line.
EMAIL: Trying to email your representative directly? Sorry it goes straight to their spam box. They'll tell you this when you call, often. Unfortunately email is more than half the communication you'll have. WAIT: A 2 day drive can mean a 2 week wait for your items with no specific delivery dates or times available on your stuff for weeks. You'd think you'd be saving more money with a system like that. No.
DROP OFF TEAM: A team member showed up at our house by himself without our items, they had been hired for the day and was not associated with American Van Lines. We were never alerted that this would be the case and were pressured into tipping the additional outside help. The truck driver showed up, unloaded items and proceeded to leave a box at our home that didn't belong to us. We texted him that day to alert him that there was someone else's item at our house and he asked we keep it outside for him to pick up later in the week. The box remained outside for weeks on end and he stopped communicating with us about its return. LOSS: They packed an item of mine, didn't log it, lost it and have claimed no responsibility.
DAMAGES: My coffee table had the legs ripped right off of it, a huge crack split my shelf in half. Several boxes had huge holes in them from mishandling, leading to a shattered wine glass and platter within. We were told by the mover when it items were dropped off that all we had to do was take photos and make a claim online within 90 days. That's it. This was a boldfaced lie. CLAIMS: We were denied all damage claims, even after providing photographic proof of damage. This was because items were not marked as damaged with our deliveryman upon arrival. He saw the coffee table was broken! Why did he not write it down!?

American Van Lines was good and did a lot of follow-ups. And when I didn't have a place yet where I was moving, they said they had monthly storage and that they could hold it for a month. So that was really helpful because I just left it there instead of shipping everything to my dad's house while I found a place. And then, when I finally did get a place a month later, I had it moved. It saved me from doing two moves so that was good that they mentioned that.
However, when I was quoted the whole storage cost, the balance came up to be a little bit more. The guy did tell me it was a rough estimate. But it was about $300 less than what I actually ended up paying. And the whole storage facility charge involved a $500 one-time charge and the explanation was something about keeping track of stuff when they're storing it. It sounded shady. Initially they told me it was $170 a month for storage plus a one-time processing fee. But when I ended finally shipping my stuff and receiving it, I didn't see the $170 fee. They said, "Oh, the first month is free". But there was the $500 charge. They could've been a little more upfront about that.

They were very attentive to the entire process. The follow-up was good and so was everything. When I was expecting them to email me something, they did it. I didn’t have to pursue them. What they quoted me was exactly what I got charged. I’ve done things with moving companies before where I was expecting a 30 percent tick up. There was nothing like that. They did tell us, though, that it would be a three-man crew, but it was a two-man crew instead. However, that wasn’t an issue. The two fellas that came were very good. American Van Lines sent a new driver to my mother's house. He was really great. They did what they had to ensuring her furniture would be picked up and delivered timely after the debacle. the driver and his helpers that showed up on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 were very nice and did an excellent job. My mother was so happy, as was I. they delivered a couple days later and were just as friendly on this end. Everything was wrapped nicely so that it was protected.
With the reviews and ratings they had, I hoped they would make it right and they did, very much so. Oh, and they won't be using that driver (the first one) EVER again.
Original Review: March 6, 2016
Your driver walked out after re-drawing the "non-binding" contract multiple times, while my mother was signing one with the furniture being moved on it because she tore up one that was incorrect. He left stating I wouldn't get my money back and he was happy that he could keep my 1200 deposit. This was after he spent time on the phone with arguing that there was more stuff than expected. I found the contract I signed and it was missing two items, two items that I told American Van Lines about this week and they told me that was fine. He made a huge ordeal about, literally started screaming at me, then at my mother. Then told her to sign a new contract and that she owed him 50% of the remaining portion before he would even load the truck, which is NOT how the contract reads, and then left.

My experience with American Van Lines was good, and I’d use them again. It wasn’t without problems but they resolved it all. The movers were a day late. They were up in Asheville, North Carolina, and the rain was pouring, so they were having a hard time loading up there. They weren’t able to get me on the day, but those guys showed up the next morning and loaded it all by 8:30. I had to give up the keys at 9:30. The only thing is they need to be really honest and upfront. It was out of their control, but I would have appreciated it if they said they can’t make it on time. But it still worked out alright. The driver was excellent and a nice guy. He had helpers who were good and nothing got damaged, so I’m still happy.

When doing my estimate over the phone, I was 100% accurate in reporting how many items I had to move, and even described larger items (large recliner couch instead of normal couch). Somehow, the movers still ran out of remaining space in the truck! I had a relatively small 3 bedroom house with only 1 bed. They said whoever did the dispatch estimate was very wrong. I didn't have a single unreported item missing on the estimate, in fact the # of clothes boxes was larger on the estimate than what actually needed to be packed.
As a result, some of my items couldn't get packed, and the movers could not pack away the large pile of packing garbage in my front yard, so I had to pay out of pocket for a trash removal service which was supposed to be included in the money I was paying the moving service. This is NOT the fault of the packers, they did an EXCELLENT job doing the best they could given the bad situation and I rate them 5/5, but the sq foot estimate from dispatch was all wrong and made things difficult for them.

They lied to me about where my furniture was, got defensive when I expressed my frustration at how long it took to bring me my furniture. We have had an absolutely horrific move with this company. I had a tight deadline to report to my, new job and was told by Bernie our sales agent it was no problem. They would take care of me if I could book right away. I arranged for my new company to pay the deposits and set it up. Then our job was transferred to the completely incompetent customer service agent Marcus.
He told me our pick up was supposed to be Jan 27th and take 6 to 8 hours. They should arrive between 9 and 11am. The driver and his helper showed up 2 hours late, got work and then proceeded to say they would return the next day to finish after only working 2 hours. My wife confronted him and he cussed her out. After repeated calls to the office I eventually negotiated everything out with the drive. Promising big tips if they worked late and got the job done. They pulled a late night and early morning and got it done before noon the next day. I kept my promise and tipped them well.
For delivery the customer service agent said Sat or Sun. I pushed for exact details, considering all the problems I had with the pickup. He put me on hold multiple times and tried to get answers. Honestly I think, it just went on a coffee break cause He never gave me anything other than it would be a weekend delivery. After two days went by I called to get a solid date and time. He asked me about payment. I told him I had yet to receive an invoice. It was about 5:30 on Friday evening when He finally sent it to me. They overcharged me, and didn't give me the discounts they promised.
He called 20 minutes before closing Saturday to tell me the driver would be there Sunday and asked about final payment. He acted astonished when I reminded him that my new company was paying and they aren't open till monday and I didn't agree with the charges. He said he would talk to his manager and then never called me back. I tried to call but it went straight to voicemail. So I called the main number and talked to a different agent. He said they are still on schedule for sunday. About 5 minutes later Marcus did sent me the direct number for the driver.
I finally talked to the driver at 7pm and he said he was told to not deliver until payment was made. I asked to speak to his dispatcher. He couldn't get a hold of him. How am I supposed to pay an inaccurate invoice after the office is closed when no one will call me back. So, now I have to get a payment, first thing Monday and explain to my new boss the inaccurate invoice, and rushed payment. Not to mention I have to miss a day off work to get my stuff back from this corrupt incompetent company.

And he couldn’t so he was like, “I’ll give you a two-day window when your stuff arrives.” He ended up changing the dates five times for me because we were going to storage and then we weren’t and then we were. It was literally back and forth. And then we got the exact date we wanted and we didn’t have the whole truck. It was split.
I know that there’s usually a two-day window for pickup and drop-off unless you own the whole truck, and he did it. We were so impressed because I know that doesn’t happen every time. It was a fast move. We booked it about a week and a half out before the move, changed it five times but Bernie went above and beyond to make my move amazing. We retired and moved south. We used American Van Lines, and there were no problems in setting up our move. It was pretty seamless. The moving crew was wonderful, very friendly, courteous, and very careful with our belongings. The only issue we had was that initially we were told that there would be a two to three day spread from the time that the movers left our house until they arrived at our new house in North Carolina, which is about a 13 hour drive, and that we were going to have a little swing time to overnight somewhere, and do half of our trip. But that did not happen.
As it turned out, they drove straight to our new home, which meant that we ended up getting two hours of sleep in order to get on the road and be here when they arrive, and that's exhausting for people like us who are in their retirement age. If we had been aware that was going to happen, we might have managed things a little bit differently. But we had zero broken items moving a 3,000 square foot home so it was good.

Great moving company. They packed up all my stuff really fast without damage. The people that were packing everything were very polite and knew what they were doing. The moving coordinator informed me whenever the truck was getting close or if something happened and made sure that my day was okay with me. I moved from Minnesota to FL and it was a great price for what they did. I didn't have a lot of stuff, but they weighed a lot like weight lifting equipment and tools. It was like two tons of stuff and I live alone. If you're thinking about getting a moving company get this one especially if you live in the Midwest.

Gloria, the moving coordinator, was amazing! We were going from California to Boston and I was very concerned about price and logistics. I contacted many companies for quotes and she was the fastest to get back to me and was also very thorough. On the day of the move, the moving crew was very nice and pleasant. There were only two of them so it took a long time for loading. We were moving from our home to a storage unit and then they were going to load it from our home and then had some load from the storage unit. We had two places where they were picking up and it felt like an all day thing, but they were being thorough.
Overall, it's been great. There was some confusion and we were surprised about something during the pricing. I had called a couple of days before to add items to the inventory list to which they told me to call before the movers came out. When I called, they said they weren't able to do that. They'd have to do it on the day itself. So it got a little crazy with the inventory lists. But we were able to resolve it and there was some going back and forth with what was the actual final price versus what they had quoted us. So that turned out to be a little different than what we expected but all within reason. I would definitely recommend American Van Lines. They were timely and communication with the team was very good on the dates.

The supervisor of the guy we spoke to at American Van Lines gave us a pretty good price. We did compare American Van Lines to United and Allied, and decided to go with American because they had a good and reasonable price. And overall, I was very satisfied with the people that came and loaded my stuff up north and the guys that unloaded it down here in Florida. Nothing was destroyed and missing. I would definitely recommend American Van Lines.
The movers spent a lot of time at my house up north. I bought some dinner and we had a really good time. They were really polite and intelligent. All of the guys down here in Florida were equally the same. I hoarded and collected for 61 years and these guys did a real thorough good job at packing everything. They did a really good job. I can't say anything wrong about them. The price was a lot cheaper than what we ended up paying, because I had a whole lot more stuff that they loaded at my house in Illinois than I told them. But the moving guy was lenient with me and it was approved.
The only one mistake that happened in the whole move was my fault. I overlooked the big screen door and had it standing in my garage. It was not the movers’ fault because I pointed out real quick the things that I don't want in the van and they understood every bit of what I said and did exactly what I asked them to. I never told them to leave the screen door for the buyer of the home, so it ended up down here in Florida.

I have made several long distance moves. Now that I'm retired I decided to move from Florida to Nevada. I contacted American Van Lines in Florida for a quote. My very first contact with this company was so impressive they were professional and handled every aspect of my move with accuracy. The most impressive thing was their high level of contact with me every step of the way. They showed up on time and my final bill was actually less than was originally proposed, that speaks so highly of their level of integrity and the way they do business. My furniture was delivered in perfect condition and no broken items. If I ever move again I will be calling AVL.

I had the move done over the holidays and it was a little difficult getting them to give me a time commitment on when they'd deliver the stuff and I couldn't get ahold of anybody. American Van Lines got the delivery done on New Year's Day and they did a pretty good job, although the guys got delayed. My dad's moved to an assisted living facility and they're talking about coming in 10 'clock at night and I said, “That's not gonna work.” Then they're talking about going to Houston or San Antonio or some place and I said, “Look, I need you to get and unload this stuff. I suggest you all get a room for the night and I'll meet you first thing in the morning. We'll get it done.” So they checked with somebody and that's what ended up happening. I'm satisfied with my experience but it's been iffy and irritating.

I did an internet search for moving companies and picked three of them. I got three quotes and American Van Lines had the best price. But it was very difficult to get the moving coordinator, Marcus, to return my call. When I initially called I got an intake person who was very nice and after being frustrated not having him return my calls, I contacted the initial person and he got ahold of the man and asked him to return my calls.
There was also a little hiccup during the move. I was moving from Northeast Ohio to New Orleans, Louisiana. It was over a thousand miles. I was selling a house and the people who bought my house had difficulty getting financing so my closing date came and went, and I had initially set my move up to about a week after closing date, which should've been okay. But under the circumstances, I had to change my move date.
American Van Lines had a problem scheduling my move and because of that, they had to subcontract. At the very final day, I was in my house longer than I was supposed to be. I was there past the date that I was supposed to be out because of the moving company. The company didn't show up until 5 o'clock at night to load my stuff. So obviously, they didn't finish until late. They drove all the way from Chicago, Illinois to Cleveland, Ohio in the morning and the afternoon. It's a seven-hour drive and then loaded my stuff. There were two men and they were very nice and were very careful. They were wonderful and very professional and I couldn't ask for a better crew as far as I know.
But somewhere in between the time that the crew from Chicago picked up my stuff and the crew from wherever brought it to me in New Orleans, I had several things damaged. I knew it wasn't the crew that loaded my truck at my house because we were there with them and they were very careful. But it came on a different truck. So when it got transferred from one truck to the other, there were several boxes that had items in the boxes that were broken and boxes that were labeled 'this end up' and 'fragile' were upside down and fragile things were on the bottom of piles. I also have a couple of boxes that are missing. I had included in my move a seven foot aluminum ladder that is missing. I had a wooden rocking chair that was totally demolished. Totally. I had parts of another chair that are missing.
I've never used a moving company before as I've never moved this far before so I don't know if it's American Van Lines or if it was the one that they subcontracted out to but I'm filing a lost claim. They asked me for feedback almost immediately after the move and that was before I had unpacked everything and at that point, I thought things were okay. But once I started unpacking things and saw the damage and the condition that my things were in, things are not okay.

The American Van Lines coordinator who assisted me for my move was excellent and I was happy with everything. The only problem that I had was that they moved everything except my dryer, my washer, a hutch and a dresser. I had to wait another two weeks for the washer and dryer. I think they should've chosen a better what to leave behind because obviously when I move in, I need a washer and dryer to wash clothes. Also, I had a mirror and they screwed the bolts in too far and it came through the wood on the front, so I had to putty it. Other than that, I had nothing damaged. American Van Lines have the best people. They were very cordial, helpful, and they went above and beyond the call of duty in North Carolina. My experience was great and I would tell everybody, even cost-prohibited, to go with American Van Lines.

I would definitely recommend American Van Lines, but I will tell people to pay attention to make sure that certain things don't happen. The moving coordinator was very polite, congenial and helpful. He did the estimate over the phone by my request, moving room by room and me listing every single piece of furniture that was in the rooms so he could come up with an estimate. I appreciated all his help as he went out of his way to answer my questions to assist me. He asked me if I had time for someone to come out and do a walk-through estimate because we were moving a couple of days later and it’s surrounding the holiday. My husband and I both worked overtime because of the holiday and it was a very stressful situation.
Some other guy called and he said that the coordinator who I had gone over everything with had asked him to call. I didn’t recognize the number and didn’t know who it was. The way he had said the name of the moving company didn’t sound the same. He said the name of my coordinator, which wasn’t even the same person, had requested to set up an appointment to have someone come up to my house and I didn’t feel comfortable with that. He was very pushy. Nothing matched up so I didn’t know if he had somehow found out the information and was trying to do a scam or if it was the same company and they were just trying to come in and do the actual walk-through estimate. Either way, I was very unappreciative of him.
The movers showed up on time that day. They did their best under poor weather conditions and were also very helpful so we appreciated them. Not everything was a hundred percent when we got there. There were some damages in the actual house. The person that bought the house hasn’t said anything, so we let it go. There was some damage done in the old house that we were selling, and I noticed later that there was some slight damage done to some of the furniture. There was a scratch in the wood, and since it’s solid wood, I can re-stain it.
Overall, it was a good experience and the pricing was extremely fair. They were experienced movers, and they did a really good job. The only problem that we had was that they were understaffed - there were only three movers and it took the entire day. Maybe that was because I denied the walk-through and they couldn’t see the size of our furniture and what they had to work with as far as the layout of the rooms.

Our first move with American Van Lines was back in 2002. The first contact that I had, shut it up. We had our second move with them when we had household goods transferred to a second home that we had purchased. This second contact was an airhead. The first time he called me, he was talking about somebody else, and did not even do any confirmation first. I told him, “That was not me. We’re not coming next week.” Later on, I told this same person, who has been my contact, that there was some damage. And he said, “Okay, I’ll send that form. You have 90 days to complete it.” And I’ve yet to see the form.
In this more recent move, all the goods that we had were already segregated in the warehouse. We went there with the movers, themselves, and they were very can-do, good guys, and they loaded everything. I was hoping to end up with a longer timeframe before I had to be in California, but they ended up staying there. It was within the timeframe, but I had to catch a flight very quickly to get out there. And apparently, there was snow before they came up into the mountain pass, so they had a hard time.
And then they had a hard time at the condo complex where I was. It was unfortunate that the truck leaked and there was water damage on some of the furniture, which I have to send a claim to them for, at some point, but I presume that they’ll take care of me. The moving crew was responsible, they kept on the move, and they weren’t lazy. The moving consultant was helpful and positive, and he helped me set up. Everything was actually great. I’m not sure yet how they’re going to handle the claim, but I’m happy with my experience with them.

The moving coordinator from American Van Lines asked me what I had to move, then she gave me an estimate and a window for pick-up and delivery. The estimate was a little low but that's probably because I had more stuff than most people who live in the size of the apartment that I had. The guy on the truck who called the shots was outstanding; he hired local people on both ends. Up in New Jersey, he hired some good professionals, and down here, he had to get some people off of Craigslist who weren't movers, but they didn't ruin anything. Everything got packed up, moved, and unpacked without anything getting broken or lost. These guys were great.
