    I switched States because of my job and found American Van Lines online as being one of the most highly recommended companies. The moving coordinator was always very responsive and present. He answered all the questions I had and was very reassuring. The moving crew were also very efficient and knowledgeable. It was the best American packing job I ever had done. It's just that the communication between all the parties wasn't. There were four people that I talked with - the movers directly and the moving company that managed the movers. Then I talked to someone who was organizing the time, letting me know sort of the status of the actual move and then the person who originally took my payment and created all the contract. There was confusion about who did what and how but I can understand that when you go through third parties.

    I was extremely pleased with the entire process for this move. Tim was extremely helpful as was my customer service rep. The two young men who came to move me were excellent. Arrived on time, packed everything in the truck in a short time and unloaded with everything in perfect shape. Not only were they excellent movers, but very polite and respectful young men.     I was looking online when I found American Van Lines and got a quote. My experience with the moving consultant was good. I don't have any complaints. As for the moving crew, two of their guys were very professional and very cordial. They did everything I asked them to do. There was this other guy though, whom when I was telling them that I didn't want them all to break anything and that they needed to be careful, turned around and said, "you act like you don't trust us." I said, "you know, I've moved before and things get broken. And no, I don't trust that you're not going to break anything." And then he said something else. I think it was just his personality. He said something else and my answer to his next comment, which I don't remember, was, "if you don't want to be here, you need to leave before we get started." And he's like, "oh no, you know, I'm okay." So I said "okay". We started out like that and then it got better.

    I was satisfied with the fact that they were on time and that they were efficient. As far as the guys themselves, they were good, and the other one got better so... Overall, I'm satisfied. Some of the moves I've done before, I did by myself, so it was definitely nice to have help. I would highly recommend having a moving company just because it's easy. The only thing I was really disappointed about was the family heirlooms that got busted. Even though I took the time to write "fragile", "will break", and wrapped them with bubble wrap, the whole nine yards, I still had broken items which I can't replace and that was very disheartening. But again, overall, they were good.

    The people who packed the stuff did a pretty good job packing and unpacking. Everything came out in good shape. I have one item that the bottom has been hit and I don't know how it happened. I also have one window cupboard, that the top has been slightly damaged. The paint has gone off but otherwise, there was nothing broken. The only thing that I was not satisfied with was the response from the lady who was in charge of the repacking, she was very difficult to get hold of. I've used American Van Lines many times when I was working for the airlines and I was moving from country to country. Every time the airline paid for it but this time it was me who paid for it. The important part of it was it worked out very well.

    American Van Lines was good. The drivers were professional and knew what they were doing. We ended up with one broken cable; everything else is okay and we did not file a claim. The big issue that we had was I had called for a quote and they were too busy to come after they hounded me. So we went through it over the phone. And when the drivers came they said that they don't move anything in bags which nobody told me and that if I wanted them moved, I would have to either pay them for cash under the table or call back later for another quote. The move was seven or eight hundred, and we ended up giving them two hundred to move something that should have been included in the quote, and I'm sure they just kept it. It wasn't even a company policy.

    I was not pleased using American Van Lines. When they moved the items, there were things that were damaged and lots of things that were broken. But they didn't bring some of the items that they were supposed to have gotten, that were mine, and these are still at the previous residence. And they brought with them to my new residence some of the things that belonged at the previous location and that don't belong to me. I made them aware of that and they were supposed to have made the effort to make the changes. The move took place in August and we're now in December, and it still has not taken place. The last time I talked to them, they were saying, "Oh, it's still gonna happen," and nothing has ever happened.

    I was very happy for the most part. I had only one piece of furniture that was damaged and that is because they screwed the mounting screws too far in and they came through the front of the wood. If it wasn't for that it would have been a perfect move. I can live with that! The only other problem was they could not deliver all the furniture at once. That would have been ok except the 4 pieces they could not deliver one was the dryer. I would have chosen a different piece. The washer was delivered and the dryer is kind of important so we could wash clothes. Just some constructive suggestions. The people I dealt with were all OUTSTANDING employees and did your company proud. I would recommend you to anyone who asks me if I know a GOOD moving company!

As soon as they arrived, we went over the contract documentation, and the energetic team of three movers started to protect all the furniture to be loaded in the truck.     I went online and read reviews about all the different movers. American Van Lines was the only one that continued to correspond with me out of the ones I picked. I didn't have much response with the coordinator but the guy I exchanged emails with was fabulous. He’s the first contact I had through email and when I sent him an email if he could give me a call, he called me in five minutes. Our move was out of the ordinary because it was in two locations in two different towns that had to be picked up and I was very pleased with absolutely everything. I didn't have to be at the pickup in Wilson. They coordinated with the storage place and got everything out. We love the great people that we had and everything went like clockwork.     They were able to resolve my issue. One other thing that pains me right now is, this was before they delivered the goods and once they delivered, there was damage, so that is an issue I am dealing with now with them. But the issue I posted before, that has been resolved. They were able to compensate me by a couple hundred dollars, again, this all took place before my actual things got delivered to my house. But once it was delivered, I noticed that it was not packed properly initially so there was a lot of damage in there. Now it's on my part to go back and claim for the damaged goods.

    I chose American Van Lines as it was advertised as family owned company which strives to convey their personal values and delivers high standard for their customers. As a matter of fact, none of the above is true. I had a move scheduled from NC to WI. Everything went well until I signed the contract and made the deposit. Things went tipsy turvy from there on. My goods were picked up on Oct 30 and here I am on Nov 24th still waiting for the delivery!!! With less than a day left for hosting Thanksgiving party for my family and friends at my new home... I have no furniture, no cookware, no dishware to entertain my family who are flying here from different parts of the country. American Van Lines - you have turned my Thanksgiving into a nightmare and embarrassment in front of my family members, which I can never forget. Is this how you respect family values??!

    1. They have no idea what customer support means: A move coordinator was assigned who initially gave me window of Oct 29 and Oct 30. She told me they would confirm the exact date 24 hours in advance. I waited for the call on Oct 28, and then left voicemail to Barbara asking her to confirm the date, whether it was 29 or 30. Come Oct 29, tried reaching out to her and left several voicemails. At this time, I called main customer support and the guy had no idea about the date either. He said he would check with the dispatcher. I requested him to give me call back, which he did after noon time. He said the driver would be in at 9 am, which was unacceptable as it was not 24 hour notice. I had to convince the rep to push it to at least 11 am so that I can prep for the move and pack few things on my own.

    On the move day, a driver and two guys came in to pack my household items. By this time, I had packed all my clothes, few of my personal things such as sewing machine, expensive jewelry tool sets. I run my jewelry designing business and sew customized quilts, embellished craft items etc., Nov and Dec are my busiest seasons where I get lot of orders. They did good job of packing which I was impressed and tipped them around $100 initially and they asked for more as there were three of them. I was told that my things will be loaded to truck and dispatched in next few days.

    2. Unprofessional greedy movers: I never received any call from AVL. I called them to check on the date and balance due. To my surprise, they had overcharged me for packing. I had to call several times to talk to a person who can answer what those over packing charges were for? After several days and consistent calls to AVL, I was able to speak to a Sales Manager. I had to explain him all over, which was a pain. I sent him documents, emails with in-home survey copy from the other mover which I had shared during initial quote. I even asked him to check the call records as the initial sales guy William had never communicated that they would charge extra for mattress box. After several follow-up calls, Jeremy - Sales manager agreed that there was miscommunication and that he would honor the initial quote. I was happy thinking what else could go wrong now. But, AVL never lets you down with unpleasant surprises!

    3. Unacceptable delays: Now, I am waiting for my things all excited to unpack and get my new home ready for the thanksgiving party. My delivery window had passed Nov 17. No one from AVL cared to call me. Anyways, I was in dire need for my household things, so kept on calling them. Every time I spoke with different people who had no clue where my things were. There was a standard response from every rep - when demanded an answer, they used to put me on hold and say - I am unable to get in touch with dispatcher. Let me check with the dispatcher and call you back. No return calls, whatsoever. Meanwhile, I was losing business as I could not fulfill orders without my tools and sewing machine.

    4. Pathetic Ops and delivery team: I had to escalate and finally got a call from Customer Support Manager. She told me that my goods were still in NC. By this time, it had passed the delivery window and I was frustrated. After several back and forth calls and lots of hold time, she seemed to understand my concerns and told me that she will try to get my things delivered before Thanksgiving party. Yesterday, she gave a call and told it would be delivered today. I asked if I can speak to her manager to get confirmation and discuss my concerns. Now, I was kind of relieved that I can finally get my things, host party and backfill at least few orders from my loyal customers.

    But... it's American Van Lines who can never let you down with unpleasant surprises. I get a call from Ops Manager - Dave who turned things bad to worse again. All he did was defending and justifying every missed step. He cared less about customer service and seems arrogant and someone who believes he is always correct. I spent more than an hour talking to him and all he did was arguing and nothing to help my situation better. He picked and chose partial facts like saying the customer rep called me for pickup time. I tried to explain to him that after several attempts, they did reach out but look at the call logs to see who called first and the message context. He told maybe the coordinator was out that day and maybe someone would have called later on 29.

    I mean seriously? For pick up on 30th (which was not confirmed by AVL) in the first place?! Now, this guy had triggered back my frustration - I asked him if I can speak to someone else. He assured me that he would coordinate meeting with his VP. I will not be surprised if I don't hear back from him or his VP. But, I will definitely warn other customers to watch out for the bait. Avoid them at my circumstance. I know my goods are stuck with them and I can do nothing now. But, I will take every measure to caution others from the pain and mental stress that I am going through. I wish I had never picked American Van Lines!

He walked me through the process and was all pushy on the quote but the quote was one of the best ones I've heard so I was happy to pursue American Van Lines. There's another lady who I only interacted with via email when she set up the date. They took care of everything. The moving crew was also great. I enjoyed them because they were helpful, polite, smooth and seemed like they were taking care of stuff. They had all the tools and boxes ready to go.     I searched for moving companies and American Van Lines is the one that top rated on consumer reports. The moving coordinator who assisted me was good and he walked me through the process. He was very easily accessible whenever I need to make any kind of changes or kind of questions that will come up. And we were very confident with the information he told us because you don't meet the people until they come out there moving and it was a little scary but he was very good with it. He was also the moving consultant who helped me plan out the details of the move and he did a great job.

    The crew arrived early and got right to work. They had a guy who sat me down to walkthrough some of the paperwork while the other crew was cleaning out the apartment originally. They were done there a little bit less than an hour and then on the road very quick and they got to the new apartment two and a half hours away early as well. And they were done in a very timely manner. They're great. But I'm waiting on what they say about my claim as there was an issue with my washing machine, it's one of those things where hopefully they can come through with the bug.

    I'm very happy with the drivers and the packers, but very dissatisfied with the coordinator and the estimator. Estimator was rude and overestimated dramatically the amount of furniture. I described to her that we had moved less than six months prior and I had the actual move ticket so I knew exactly the poundage that we had. She still had me go through the entire house and inventory it, and then she added all of that weight onto the ticket I already had, which increased the estimate by quite a bit. She added approximately 3000 pounds, so that was not a good way to start.

    Several times, we had mentioned to the coordinator and we brought it up as many times we could to the coordinator that we had paid for and that we needed to have a shuttle service provided because of the length of our driveway. When the driver did call, he expressed that he was never told about the shuttle service and could not make arrangements given the time he had. That was disheartening at best to know that we had paid for something and that they couldn't even manage to coordinate between the field and the office.

    The driver, however, his expertise was able to get it done. The drivers and packers were very friendly. They saw how much we had already packed. They took money off for the weight of course because we had the proper shipping ticket at that point showing the actual weight. So we were very, very happy with the guys in the field.

    Things I'm happy about: Having watched the crew load and unload the truck, they treated my belongings with care and did an excellent and organized job of making sure the items were secure in the truck. The large items I did not pack myself and had them protect, and they did a great job. The driver and crews at both locations were hard workers and never once did I see any of them treat any of my items differently than I would have treated them myself.

    Things that could have been better: As with any move, some breakage happens, and compared with a previous move with a different carrier (Allied I think), the broken items this time were relatively minor and not entirely unexpected. The two exceptions are one of our couch's feet - it's possible they're in a box somewhere but as of the time of this writing they are inexplicably missing. The other is a shattered fish tank - if anything required utmost protection and care it would have been that - but it is a small tank and in terms of losses, relatively minor. I should also note that at this point it seems like the only items which are broken/pieces missing are those that we had them pack.

    Things I'm not happy about: I only have to main issues with the move experience - communication and cost. Communication: I filled out paperwork to have my items delivered a month before the delivery date and emailed it to two separate people I had been in contact with. After not hearing a response for a week, I called and finally reached someone after two or three attempts. For some reason they did not seem to receive my emails - I was not having email issues at the time and I was simply replying to emails they had sent me so it wasn't an address issue on my end.

    So three weeks out and the paperwork was submitted and verbally confirmed that they received it. I heard nothing further from them until the week of the move. Three days away from the date they are supposed to deliver I decided I'd contact them, and before I get a chance to call I finally get a call from them and they tell me they're delivering my items on the NEXT DAY (two days earlier than requested) and they finally send me my final invoice.

    Less than 24 hours notice of when my items will be delivered and a final invoice that has to be paid in full (~$21,000) before they'll drop off the items - in essence, I had about 6 hours to arrange payment before the banks closed that day. This was incredibly discourteous, and it denied me from putting the entire amount on a credit card from which I get reward points. Had I been given the final invoice just a few days earlier this would not have been a problem.

    Cost: First we have a lot of stuff and when I first talked to American Van Lines, I adamantly explained that we would be filling their truck completely full. We moved two years earlier and filled a truck to the brim then, it was not going to be different this time around. Multiple times I said this was going to be the case and went through a list of the major items we were bringing and just estimated the rest, emphasizing time and again that the whole truck would be filled.

    I was given a quote of ~$17,000 which included pick up, delivery and my expected 3 months in storage. The truck arrives and the crew starts loading the truck and the inventory person says the quote will need to be adjusted and scribbles down a figure of $27,000, then has me sign a BLANK authorization form giving them free reign to adjust the quote. The choice I was given was to sign the form or they stop loading the truck. I don't have a choice at that point because we have to drive out that night so that I can start work and kids start school at the new location. I believe this would be signing a contract under duress according to the law.

    So, the total bill becomes a little over $26,000 and storage costs close to $2000. $28,000 for the move that was quoted, and with full knowledge that the truck would be filled, at $17,000. My previous move, with storage, cost ~$15,000. To put it bluntly, American Van Lines quoted me a comparable rate to my previous experience but upcharged it to nearly double the amount. I found this final price to be exorbitant, and a bit underhanded of them to be so far off of their quote and force me to accept a change of that magnitude after I explained to them in no uncertain terms what the hauling and storage would entail.

    American Van Lines setup my move from Albuquerque, NM to Delaware. The moving van arrived on Thursday Oct. 22nd and with the driver and the mover. It took them 7 hours to load the truck. They very carefully packed the van and the driver told me that they would arrive in Delaware within 7-10 days. The mover (Alex) called me on Tuesday Oct. 27th and said the van would arrive in Delaware the next day.

    Alex gave me cost for the move, which was due to the driver by cashier's check. I stayed in New Mexico and sent the check next day by UPS to my brother-in-law in Delaware. The driver was delayed in Maryland but arrived on Thursday Oct. 29th and unloaded the van at a storage facility in Delaware. My brother-in-law handed the driver the check and the driver and mover were finished in approximately 2 hours. I am extremely pleased with how the move went.     If there were negative stars I would give it to them. I have moved 12 times in 9 years but have never had such a horrendous experience. The actual men who pick up are not the problem, they are kind, courteous and professional. I made it very clear that I was only in the destination address for a 3 day period and needed my belongings to arrive. Aside from the initial discussion with my account customer service person Latoya **, it was almost impossible to reach her and the only thing she could tell me was that she had no information on the expected delivery even into the first day of my 3 day window.

    I had to call repeatedly, left messages and emails until I finally got another representative on the phone who looked up my account to tell me that it wasn't due to arrive until the following week when I would no longer be at the destination to receive it. I also learned that my things had not even left their warehouse in Florida even though they had been picked up over a week earlier. I asked for them to be returned to my house in Florida and refunded to which I was refused! I asked several times to speak to a senior manager to which I was also refused and finally got an email from Latoya's supervisor Tamika ** apologizing and asking me not to escalate. They do not even ALLOW you to escalate because they refuse to let you speak to anyone higher up.

    The things arrived on the evening of the last day delivered by a third party whom they subcontracted with. I would highly recommend going with Nu Lyfe moving before using American. It's unbelievable the behavior of their customer service and amazing that their senior level management allows this. I was promised a call from Tamika the day following delivery to see how the move went, never got one. Several days later Latoya called.

    The driver was late and not only that, failed to call me; I had to call him to inquire the reason. We had initially agreed that pick-up would be on Saturday with delivery on Monday; somehow this had all changed (who initiated the change is a mystery to this date...) Estimated weight was 8,000 lbs.; on Sunday morning, the driver reported the final weight at about 7,800 lbs. Then, surprise! Real weight was 9100 lbs.!

    As a member of the military, I am accustomed to moving frequently. American Van Lines were friendly and made the scheduling of my move easy. However everything went downhill the week of the move. They gave me a three-day window to pack and load my house, then called me a few days prior and said they would be arriving on the last day of the three-day window. They also told me they may need two days to pack and load my house, which put it outside the three-day window they had originally promised me. This new schedule did not work for my wife and I since we had to be out of the house the following day.

    I explained this to Marcus, my personal moving coordinator, and told him they were in breach of contract since they could not complete the packing within the original date range. Marcus then informed me since they were still arriving within the original time frame, American Van Lines did not consider that a breach of contract. The one bright spot in this process was the moving crew, who arrived on time (on the last day of the date range) and worked hard until almost midnight to pack the entire house in one day. Delivery went fine, and only a few minor things were broken from our move from MD to GA.

    Then came the bigger problem - American Van Lines still has not provided me with the necessary paperwork so I can get proper reimbursement from the military for my move. The driver did not have extra copies of the weight tickets, and I was never given any receipts for the ten thousand dollars I paid via credit cards. This is simply unacceptable. I made several phone calls and emails to Marcus, who continued to be AWOL after I made the final payment. If you are a member of the military, I would highly advise against using this company, since they cannot provide the basic paperwork we need to complete a military move.

    I hired American Van Lines for a move from Detroit to Dallas. They were very nice on the phone until the day of moving came. I was scheduled for pick up on the 28th-30th Sept and I called in on the 28th to ask of the status and they informed me that they can't do the move because they couldn't find a truck. I had told them already that my lease was ending on the 30th and I had to absolutely move out before that. They didn't even call me to tell that they wouldn't be able to come. It was lucky that I called in.

    A couple of hours later they called and that they would be able to make it by the 2nd of Oct. I had to de-assemble all my furniture myself. Rent a u-haul and transfer all my stuff to a friend's garage. The move was done by Best Price Movers. The men who came to pick up were nice and courteous and finished the job within 2 hours. The shipment was delivered on time. However, the delivery men didn't have a toolbox and didn't reassemble my furniture so now I have to do that myself as well. They also broke a bookshelf (they delivered half of the broken bookshelf) and a box is missing. The whole move was stressful and poorly planned.

    Let me preface this review by saying, I know I should have just moved our stuff on our own. Every friend/family member/acquaintance told us not to use a long distance mover but we did anyways on our move from FL to CO thinking this would be different. Nope, this has been nothing but a nightmare to deal with this company. The move itself has gone pretty well other than the pickup crew in FL who threw around all types of unprofessional suggestions such as "the last guy didn't tip them well so they added some weight on to their move" and things like asking about some leftover washer detergent and if they could take it. We had a family member coming later to pick a few misc things up and guess what was missing. I'm honestly shocked nothing was missing from the move although I guess there is an inventory sheet thank God to check off.

    We had a "binding estimate" (laughing here) for an in-home estimate from another company. That price was matched. When everything was picked up there was a few extra items. To clarify we are talking about a mattress, a box spring, a tool chest, a small dresser and two small boxes maybe? Well I guess my girlfriend's father did not tip that well and our estimated weight went from 2950 lbs. to 4000. Wow, that mattress and box spring must be filled with concrete, I had no idea. This 4000 lbs. moved up price almost 1000.00 dollars. Hey no problem, I'm happy to pay for what I agreed to in the contract. So we gladly paid it.

    When the truck got here I told the driver I wanted a re-weigh before and after and guess what the actual weight came out to be. 2,420 lbs. Wow that's a pretty big difference. After dealing with our job handler Latoya, turns out they NEVER even weighed our items. It was also an estimate. Ummmm, what? Are you serious? You're going to charge us way more without any merit other than your "trained" estimators. I was literally shocked when she told me that. She said we would we reimbursed for the difference in weight and would contact me this Monday to get a refund put back on our credit card. Here I sit Friday, haven't even spoke to Latoya nor received a voicemail.

    I went ahead and took the initiative to give accounting a call and they then proceeded to let us know we would be reimbursed for the price from the original estimate. Hmm, I don't know what contract you guys are looking at but everything I've seen/signed has said the final price is based on the actual weight. And sure as hell doesn't weigh 2950 lbs. So I guess they just want us to accept the 500 lbs. loss that isn't there? I don't think so. Every dealing with this company regarding any issue has been so shady. I was in shock when one of their guys from customer service told me we are obligated to pay the binding estimate price despite the fact that right in the fine print it says, "final price based on actual weight".

    Despite the glowing reviews on this site, do your research, get everything in writing and don't allow this or any company to screw you over. They will try to at every step they can. One of these days we might actually get the refund to the estimated price but I will be initiating a consult with a lawyer on the rest of the money to the actual weight.

    I contracted American Van Lines a full month before my move. I thought earlier was better. I told them I was moving from a 2 bedroom duplex in MA to a small home in Asheville, NC. At first they were nice to me and immediately asked for 50% of the payment upfront. I should have been wary but I paid up. The niceness stopped. Then the waiting began as my move date approached. First they tried to give me a three week window in which to deliver, I said no and they shortened it. Then they told me they had no trucks in my area and were going to contract the work out - I was concerned as I had not hired another team, but I tried to be calm.

    After three promises and 3 failed pickup times, two guys and a U-Haul showed up - I was shocked as the move was costing me over 4000 dollars. In addition, although I had told the company I had a treadmill, they came with NO tools and banged and hammered on my treadmill until the screws were loose. Then they told me they would deliver in three days so I left quickly and drove all night to reach my new house. They did NOT arrive the day they promised or the next day. I called and called (NO ONE ever called me) and received a Thursday and Friday delivery (three and four days after they promised) times - no one came and NO one called. Finally they came a full five days after promised delivery. I found out later that they left all my dishes and cookware somewhere on the truck. The moving guys were nice but the company was total HELL to deal with.

    To start with American Van Lines handed off my move to a subsidiary called MBM moving systems. In turn, they contracted it out to a podunk single truck company. I was told I would get 24 hours notice before they showed. My move was scheduled for between 9/22 and 9/24 with a preferred date of 9/22. On the morning of 9/21 I emailed the person in charge of my move since they had not notified me of a move. I figured a move was coming later, so I delayed packing the last of my things. At 3:30 p.m. I get a message that they are in fact coming the next morning. We then stay up until 1 a.m. packing the rest of our things.

    The day of the move, they did a re-estimate of the weight which would cost me an extra thousand dollars. They did this after half of the boxes were already in the truck. I'm guessing they do this on a regular basis because what are you supposed to do? Cancel it and hope someone else can move your things while you lose your deposit?

    I was worried that they were going to fake the weight at the weighing station, since they didn't weigh it at my house. I really didn't trust these guys. I asked that the agent at MBM notify me as soon as the weight ticket comes in. She said it usually took 1-2 days. After a week of calling MBM asking about it, she said that the van driver still had not reported in, and she was going to try to have her supervisors contact them. Two days later, the weight ticket finally comes in.

    At this point, we had been without our things and with no idea where the driver was for 8 days. The weight ticket at least let me know that the driver hadn't just ditched our things or run off somewhere. On day 10, at 9 a.m. I get a call from the driver. They'll be at my house in 6 hours. Note, the move is 9 hours from where their truck was located. They waited until they had been driving for hours to even contact me. Not like I was at work and had to try to get out early so someone would be there when they randomly showed up.

    The agent at MBM didn't know they were coming until I told her I had heard from them. She sent me a message saying that payment should go through MBM. Driver said it should go through him. I thought the driver was trying to screw me. Turns out the agent was just not paying attention, and yes, it should go through the driver. There was also a 3% charge for using my credit card. The other option was a money order or cashier's check. Problem with those methods is that I have no recourse to get my money back if they severely screw things up. So I ate the fee. Then the move in. The trim from my desk had peeled off on one side when they brought it in. We had a large bean bag, they put 2 tears in it. Our bed frame has a gouge in the side now.

    Overall it was a terrible experience. Avoid this company at all costs, they only want your money. Also read the fine print. It gives them a ton of leeway for absolutely everything. They actually have up to 30 business days to deliver your stuff, and after that they will pay you a pittance for your trouble.

    In choosing a moving company I collect estimates from 3 major moving companies in the area: American Van Lines, Graebel, and Clover (Allied Van Line Agent). American Van Lines was chosen because the salesman was very thorough in his listing of what was to be moved. He was given the weight and cubic footage of what was in storage, a listing of what was at other locations. But, what really determined our choosing American Van Lines was that the salesman went from office to office listing each item and putting everything on an easily understandable estimate. The salesman did not stop reaching out to us after he received the moving job. Each time there was a question or problem (and there are always glitches during a move) he answered the phone or called back right away, including on Friday and Saturday nights.

    Before, during, and after the move he continued to follow up. Downside: while the loading dates were kept, the company took too long (13 days) for the delivery, and the driver did not give us a 24 hour call before unloading, as promised. Upside: again the salesman stepped in, called the dispatcher, and the driver made contact right away. Also, so far it appears that there is no damage to the furniture. We have yet to unload the computers, nor all of the cartons. We would definitely use them again.

If you are so desperate that you cannot find any other moving company, or are unable to move your personal items yourself, this should be your last resort. All you have to do is read the fine print of their contract to decide if this is the company you want to hire. If your delivery is delayed past the delivery window estimate, your compensation is $30/day. If your items are damaged, the insurance coverage is 60 cents/pound. Bottom line: if you are moving a ton of garbage and don't care when it arrives, then American Van Lines is the company for you. Good luck!

    After submitting this review, the owner of the company contacted me right away about resolving some of the issues I had with our move. While I am still not one hundred percent satisfied, I feel they made a sincere effort to fix what could be fixed after the fact.

    I would recommend that anyone using American Van Lines (any moving company, actually) do their due diligence - learn from my experience and get guarantees in writing for as much as possible, be proactive, not reactive. They did get all my household goods to Oregon intact, and the driver and movers on both ends worked very hard.

    I reviewed this company (and checked them through the DOT) and thought I'd chosen well for our interstate move. Before signing a contract the rep we dealt with was attentive but not pushy and always answered calls and emails promptly. That all changed once we signed. Calls weren't answered, and every time we did talk to someone we got a different story and were lied to repeatedly. For example, we were told we could only be given a three day pickup window and would be told the exact date about five days beforehand. The rep who told us she'd "let us know that day" never called back and wouldn't answer our calls. The coordinator was surprised we'd been told that and wanted to know who said it. We weren't told our pickup date until the day before the first possible date. The move was then contracted out to another moving company.

    We had underestimated the amount of boxes but the moving company never contacted us closer to the move to get a better count, plus they lowballed us on the weight by half - these guys are the professionals, so I don't feel I should have had to think of all these things - I don't move people for a living plus this was my first time using "professional" movers. I feel like it was intentionally low to get us to sign. The driver waited until the truck was loaded to tell us we needed to rescind our previous binding contract at which point we felt we had no choice but to sign (or file a hostage complaint with the DOT who said it might take months to get our household goods).

    We were pressured to pay by cash with the moving company telling us at one point that we HAD to pay by cash or cashier's check, and when we held our ground on paying by credit card we were made to jump through ridiculous hoops to pay that way (the $5,000 deposit only required sending a signed contract and verbally giving the card over the phone whereas the final payment required a DNA sample and signing over our firstborn - really, I had to send a copy of my license and the credit card and fill in forms and get an imprint of the card and was told to pay one company and then told I had to pay the other, was told final payment was after unloading then told nothing would be unloaded until we paid.

    The driver was three hours late the day of the pickup (otherwise I'd say he was good - we packed but he loaded and only a coffee cup was broken, just a fluke). Do yourself a favor - do not use this company. I've filed a formal complaint with the Department of Transportation and will be doing so with the Better Business Bureau as well.

    American Van Lines (broker) booked our move late April with a "contract" to pickup about June 3 in TN for move to AZ. For 2 weeks prior, I could not get a firm commitment and calls were not returned, leaving the impression that AVL didn't know or wouldn't say when they would pack and load. After demanding and "negotiating" a date, the truck, driver and one helper arrived June 3. The moving crew were from a third party mover, dispatched by American Van Lines. The crew were in a tractor with no AC in the cab and their company would not fix it. They slept in the sleeper without AC in 90+ temps. We found later that the trailer leaked rain water, adding to our woes. The movers were dispatched to points east of TN instead of towards AZ. They eventually arrived in AZ 2 weeks after loading in TN. Our load turned out to be double the weight and cost compared to first estimated.

    American Van Lines relied only on a 15 minute phone call to establish the weight. One result of underestimate; truck was overloaded requiring items taken apart to fit into smaller spaces. This further added to damaged contents when they could not be reassembled or parts were missing (a former neighbor found fasteners and furniture parts in the lawn and mailed them to me). The crew had inadequate packing materials resulting in damage (example: Broken mirror simply wrapped in cardboard and taped - no other protection.)

    Over 40 items were documented by photos with damage, some of them eventually junked. Others will go to consignment or donation as not usable. There was damage to at least one piece of furniture in each of 3 room sets. The trailer leaked rain water and some wood furniture now shows that. The supplemental insurance promptly settled but after deductible and premium, net amount received was $500. Summary: Hugely underestimated weight/space, cost doubled, weeks of doubts about scheduling, mis-managed dispatching of truck/driver, badly maintained truck, inadequate packing materials, lots of damaged goods, poor communication from begin-end.

    I contacted American Van Lines and had received a so-called "Binding Estimate". I had contacted another very reputable moving company and they came to my home and did an on-site estimate. They were a little more expensive, and American Van Lines also moved our military troops, so I went with them. In the meantime, we sold a lot of furniture and moved a 16' truck load of furniture and pictures and other household items. I called and estimate was adjusted accordingly. Moving day finally arrives, and the first comment by the driver - only at my garage, "is there is a lot more than anticipated?"

    Bottom line - he tells me that I have approx 4,000 lbs more. REALLY?? So now he's trying to convince me that I have more weight than I did from very beginning (I have estimate from other company - who did on-site). I had no choice but to sign a statement (also stating "not under duress") that I agreed. At that moment, I realized I had to be out of the home in two days. Where was I going to get a mover especially to go out of state, on such short notice? I have two issues pertaining to this: so it's not a "binding estimate" seems to be the way they do business (contractor is independent - is not an employee of American Van Lines. I was promised a exact weight that night (driver stated he was going straight to weigh station after packing up) which never happened.

    Why is verbiage "not under duress" in their paperwork?? This is obviously been a problem. I do not want to cheat anyone from making an honest living. But I don't want to be taken advantage of. I called the office several times just trying to narrow down a delivery date. No return phone calls until I left a message leaving very few options. I was finally contacted by a supervisor giving me 12 hours notice of delivery (contract states - customer will receive 24-48 hours notice). Even after the delivery I contacted the office and a supervisor, stating the issue at hand, who promised time and time again to review my file and get back to me - never received a return call. I would not recommend this company and wonder how many other "unsuspecting customers" this has happened to. Bottom line - I've moved several times - even out-of-state and have NEVER had any issues, until now - with American Van Lines!!!

    We were moving from Texas to North Carolina. I had contacted American Van Lines to do the move, and received a non-binding estimate. They told me that since they had office locations in Dallas and North Carolina, I would not be charged the normal $450 shuttle fee at either location. This would save me $900, which was a key factor in making my decision. The first problem was with the dispatch. We I agreed to a time and date for pick-up with American Van Lines on July 20, 2015. They ensured me that someone would call, and confirm a time for the move. Little did I know, they had subcontracted the job to Puma Van Lines - who I would work with from then on. No one from Puma called prior to the pick-up date.

    On the pick-up date, I sat there from 8-2 pm, waiting for someone to contact me. About 2:00 pm Caser, from the moving team, gave me a call and let me know they would be there soon. The team of movers who picked up our stuff in Texas, led by Caser, did a very good job. They were quick, efficient and did a very good job. They were the only positive part of this experience. And, as promised I was not charge a shuttle fee consistent with the original quote I received.

    The delivery is when the major problems started. On Wednesday, July 29 I reached out to Puma Van Lines to receive information on the delivery date. Two days later, on Friday, July 31 I talked to a customer service representative at American Van Lines. He let me know the driver from Puma was approaching, and would arrive over the weekend. I asked him to confirm that no shuttle fees would be charged, and to provide an updated invoice for my record. He emailed an updated invoice, which I reviewed, and he told me this was the binding final invoice, and I would not be required to pay any additional amount. It is important to note that this invoice, along with all other prior invoices, had my moving destination. In the subsequent disputes, Puma has stated that they did not know the final destination of where my belongings would be delivered, thus the reason for additional charged.

    I talked to the driver on Friday and Saturday morning, and he never mentioned a shuttle fee either. However, then on Saturday afternoon at 4:51 pm, the driver called back to inform me that the moving order did not correctly reflect the shuttle fee which would have to be charged because an 18 wheeler could not make it into my community. He said I would have to pay an extra $800 to have my stuff delivered. I explained that this was not what was agreed to with American Van Line. He transferred me to the dispatcher, Javier, who told me that because American Van Lines closed at 3:00 pm on Saturdays, I could not dispute the charge until Monday - in which case he would be required to hold my stuff for 2 days at a rate of $750 a day. So he explained I could either start paying $750 a day holding fee, or I had to pay the $800 shuttle fee.

    The dispatcher, Javier, said that he was sorry but the matter was out-of-his hands and he was required to charge the fees since American Van Lines closes Saturday at 3. I find it very concerning that when I talked to them on Friday and Saturday during business hours, when American Van Lines was open, this issue was never raised. Instead, they waited until 1 hour after American Van Lines closed, and then tried to charge an extra $800.

    This is essentially extortion, and is highly unethical and unacceptable. The dispatcher said they needed to charge the fee to cover the rental cost of the truck. So, I offered to rent a truck (shuttle) for them, and to help transfer the goods myself. He said the driver still needed to be compensated for his time, so the fee would be reduced only by $100 dollars. Thus, I clearly know the truck only cost around $100, and the rest is just additional fees they are trying to extort from me. They are supposed to deliver this morning, and they are forcing me to pay in order to get my belongings back. I am fine paying the agreed upon amount in the final invoice, but am protesting the additional fees.

I am glad that you were ultimately happy with your service and would recommend us again. The review may have been premature since the shuttle was not needed anyways. It gives me a chance to explain what a shuttle charge is. For future American Van Lines customers who are reading this review, a shuttle fee is charged when an 18 wheeler (tractor trailer) can not get close enough to the pickup address or delivery address to make a pickup or delivery. Instead, we have to use a smaller truck to pickup your furniture and then transfer it to our bigger truck. Our estimators do a good job of including shuttle charges in our estimates when they are needed at pickup. Sometimes, at the time of the estimate, we do not get the delivery address and therefore can not include it in the original estimate. If a shuttle is needed at delivery, it is the customers responsibility to pay that charge. This is true for all van lines and it is called a post contract service.     I reserved American Van Lines on 4/23/15 for my move from NY to Florida on 5/20-5/22/15. Paperwork was completed and initial deposit was paid. As was initially discussed with the moving Specialist, it would not be an issue to add storage as long as notified early enough. Added the storage on 5/05/15. Paid the additional deposit. Called American Van Lines to confirm move on 5/18. No one called me on 5/20. I made 4 phone calls on 5/21 and was assured someone would follow up with me. No one did. 15 calls were made to them on 5/22. In several of these calls, I was disconnected. I was finally notified that there was not a truck available for my move. At this point, I left for Florida with my belongings still waiting to be moved. 5 calls placed to American Van Lines on 5/23. Another moving company/carrier: SMT moving was to move me on 5/24.

    They did not call or show up at the designated time, between 9 and 11 AM nor did I receive a call. Spoke with American Van Lines on 5/24, 3 times. Was provided with the other company's contact information and finally spoke with them. Rescheduled to pick up belongings on 5/25 between 9 and 11 AM. They did not show up again and a call was not received till later that day. Notified them that because of their poor service and lack of communication I would not be utilizing them. Spoke with American Van Lines on 5/26, twice. Was assured that I would be reimbursed and comped for the inconvenience. Requested to speak with a manager and was informed that they were assisting others but would follow up with me. I have never received a call nor was I comped for my inconvenience. I had to f/u again on 5/29 re: the reimbursement of my deposit.

    Again requested to speak with a manager and was informed that I would be contacted and the issue of the comp would be addressed as I had to pay additional rent to store belongings. No call received still and I have incurred $850 for storing my belongings. I will be contacting the better business bureau and I'm requesting this amount be paid to me. I am appalled at the lack of customer service in this company and I am sure that this review will be considered by people before they seek to retain your services.

    The move overall was very good.. Wade and Kevin, the packers were outstanding. They maintained contact with me and I knew precisely when they would arrive.     My mom and I had just lost her husband, my father, in May and my mom made the decision to move back to her hometown. This was an incredibly stressful time, but American Van Lines made this a good experience for us for our first out of state move. We dealt with Matthew on the phone scheduling the van and he was wonderful. The men that came to load the van and unload were wonderful and friendly. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars was because I felt confused talking to people handling Quality Relocation Inc. that did the actual moving van part. I didn't realize up front that they worked with American Van Lines and was confused because the man had a foreign accent. Other than that, the move went well and smooth.

    After writing my negative review, AVL contacted me and helped resolve this issue. One of the managers reviewed the telephone recorded conversations between my husband and the estimator. It seems as though the initial conversations for the estimate were based on weight however once we signed the binding contract, it was set as a flat rate - which wasn't clear to us at that time. The manager I spoke with was very accommodating, and refunded the difference in the weight plus a bit extra for our dissatisfaction. I appreciate the customer service on the tail end of the transaction.

    We chose American Van Lines because of their reviews and I am very unhappy and will not use them again. We spoke with the estimator, William, one week before our scheduled pick up window to update him on our inventory. We were quoted at 4858 lbs at a total of $3690.97. We prepaid $1845.48 of this upfront. We were told by William that we would be charged on our actual weight (i.e.: if weighed more, we would pay more, if it was less, then we would pay less) but that it was important to have an estimate beforehand to make sure there was room on the actual truck, given multiple pickup locations.

    The movers who handled our things were called Route 66 Van Lines. The main mover named Vladimir called us prior to picking up our things and was on time. He was very friendly and accommodating. No problems and all seemed well at that time. Once we arrived at our new home, I called AVL three times over 2 days to get an idea of when our things would arrive and was told each time I would be contacted and I wasn't. I did get an automated call (after business hours) saying our things would be delivered the next day. When Vladimir arrived, he informed us that our total weight was 4320 and our total due was $2454.58 - which was way over what it should have been.

    He called his "boss" who said to charge us this amount, and we could call AVL on Monday (this was a Fri at 8pm) and they would be able to refund us. Thankfully we had the funds on our credit card to pay for this but given the financial burden of moving, this could have easily not been the case. At this point, if we wanted our things, I had no choice but to pay the money. They were effectively ransoming our property. I called AVL on Monday morning and was told we would not be charged under our initial quote of $3690.97 even though we were underweight, unlike both what William and Vladimir had told us. The customer service representative said that we paid "per item" and that it was a guarantee estimate, regardless of the weight.

    Again, I am not sure how this is the case given the fact that our estimate documentation clearly has the weight listed and this was specifically discussed between us and William, the estimator. I went as far to ask if our weight was over our estimate, would we then have been charged over our estimation and was told no. I am quite confident this is not true. I feel honestly feel like this company was trying to get as much money as possible for this move, and they twisted and turned the "rules" to their advantage to be able to charge more.

    Per my calculations, I should be refunded the difference between the quote of $3,690.97 and the what was charged at delivery of $2454.58 = $609.09 (which is what AVL agreed to). PLUS the difference in the weight (4858 - 4320 = 538 x 0.60 cents) = $322.90 totaling $931.99. Based on my experience, it is not clear to me whether we were blatantly lied to by William the the estimator who gave us our quote (with the backing of our driver Vladimir) or by the customer service representative who tried to help with the refund.

    Either way, I am very unhappy with this process, the customer service, and overall organization with this moving company and will never use them again. Also given that many of my colleagues are going through similar moves of their own, I will definitely guide them away from this company. I would take the reviews online with a huge grain of salt. On a side note: Nothing important got majorly damaged during the move - many crushed boxes, scrapes and smudges on light colored furniture (which was cheap) but I would be worried about sending expensive furniture. I was surprised by this actually because the truck did look very well packed when it left my home.

    I have gone through 5 out of state moves as an adult and countless moves growing up as the son of a soldier. I can say without a doubt that my move with American Van Lines in the summer of 2015 was the best. We (wife, daughter, and myself) moved from North Carolina to Ohio and from start to finish AVL did exactly what they told me they would do. After all my online research I had 3 companies do an in-home estimate and felt AVL was the best company.

    My estimator, **, was excellent and honest and stayed in contact with me throughout the entire process, even pick-up and delivery days. The driver and crew were amazing. The same crew that picked me up also unloaded me. I did most of the packing but left the kitchen and some valuables to them. I am completely moved in and unpacked and can say that I did not lose any items and nothing was broken or damaged. If you have ever been moved by professionals then you know that is unheard of. I had a not to exceed estimate with the only variable being packing materials. The final cost for the entire move ended up less than my estimate because the packing material the crew used didn't exceed the estimated amount. I seriously cannot give a high enough recommendation for this company.

    The move was accomplished successfully. The loaders handled everything in an efficient manner and everything was delivered intact. The biggest glitch was that we provided American Van Lines with an estimate of the items to be moved which was too low. If the company had been able to send an inspector to verify their own estimate, I think the loading would have been more efficient. As it was the initial truck was too small and so the loading continued through another day. Nevertheless everything was handled well.

    After my review was posted I received a call from the owner. He was very apologetic and confirmed that my advance money was refunded but it took long in processing time. I did eventually received credit back. The owner explained that due to unavoidable circumstances they were unable to provide service. He sounded sincere and regretful. He has assured me that they are constantly trying to improve their service and their system. He even offered to compensate me to offset the increased cost that I had to bear. I am satisfied and have reached a settlement.

    I hired American Van lines well 2 and half months in advance of my move. I hired them on May 28th, 2015 to move my three bedroom household from Albany, NY to Portage, MI. To schedule a move for June 16th I paid them an advance of $2057. They reassured me multiple times that everything was in order. I called on June 13th to inquire about the time I should expect them to come to pick my shipment when they informed me that they will be unable to fulfill their commitment. To date they have not returned my advance money either. I have called them multiple times and have now filed an official complaint with Better Business Bureau. It appears that this is not the first time they have done this. I would urge others who have had similar experience with them to report them to Better Business Bureau so that others don't fall for this fraudulent company.

    I wrote to customer service at 4 pm on Saturday since their office was closed. The owner of the company then tracked down the movers and they were at my place within couple of hours. They moved by stuff - 750 miles away within 48 hrs and my stuff was delivered on Monday - which was exceptional and excellent management.

    Couple of my Items were broken during the moving but the owner reimbursed me and has promised me a full cheque for the value of the items. I think owner is very thoughtful & excellent in his management.

    I am very dissatisfied customer. I used this company for moving and had a terrible experience. They booked us and took 35 % of total fees as deposit. They were suppose to pick my stuff on Friday from 1 - 4 PM. I waited till 3 PM but didn't got any call so I call customer service who then told me that their truck broke down. They apologized and assured me that the move will happen on Saturday between 12 - 3 PM. I got a call this morning at 10 am that the movers will definitely show up today. I have waited till 4 PM today and the movers have not showed up nor have I received any call. I wasted my 2 days just waiting for the move to happen.

    I tried calling their customer service and they are closed now and won't open till Monday. I am stuck with them as other moving companies are now completely booked or very expensive. Moreover they also have my deposit which is not refunded yet. I very strongly discouraged anyone to use their service in future.

Despite letting them know this, and telling them I would call with an exact date when I knew one, a company I had never heard of called in May saying they were moving me the next day.     I signed all contracts and gave my deposit to be moved from Georgia to Maine and was called four days before the move and told the company had to cancel as the truck was out of service. There isn't another moving company available as this is the busiest time of the year, so we have had to rent a truck and will move ourselves. Being senior citizens, this heavy work is not something we look forward to.

I am not sure what happened from the time we refunded you and your pickup date, because you said in your review you moved yourself. I have to assume our replacement mover didn't show up and you were forced to move yourself.

    I found both gentlemen to be easy to talk to and capable of moving our home furnishings. The inventory was done accurately and even when I needed to increase the size of the load due to some last minute decisions, ** worked with us to ensure everything would make the truck. ** was a very hard worker and hauled everything out of our home for staging and rarely took a break. Some larger items needed to be wrapped and he took care of everything. Once the truck arrived in Florida we were delayed due to bad weather in Tennessee and thankfully ** was able to delay by one day and have our furniture delivered the evening of our eventual arrival. We would recommend this crew to our friends and family any time.
