I am currently on the phone with HughesNet customer service department patiently waiting while they process my early termination request. Now I have been transferred over to Cathy from the account management team, who really is offering me the same thing all other representatives have and I just don't see the point in dragging the relationship out any longer. From day one service has been so slow that I would get frustrated and just use my cell phone. Every time you call they want to drag you through pointless remote testing of the "EQUIPMENT" and I am sick of it. GOOD BYE! Hughes horrible dot net. Also early termination is $355, flushed right down the toilet. Look at it this way, I save over a grand in monthly payments. Absolutely ridiculous???

Hughes Net is the slowest internet service I have used since dial up. Often can't watch a YouTube video. Can't handle investment account speeds to even load a screen in a reasonable period of time. My phone hotspot is at least twice as fast. Avoid at all costs!

We signed up with HughesNet thinking it would be an improvement over our small local service provider. We were assured the service would provide faster, better internet service and although there were date limits, since we were not "gamers" we could easily handle 4-5 electronic on our subscription. We were unable to stream Netflix at all; we couldn't run over 1-2 electronics at a time and then you would receive multiple "Page cannot be accessed" error messages. You might finally open a website after 3-6 failed tries. Upload was extremely slow.
When we complained, they "tested" our service and said it met all their test requirements. We finally called and told them to cancel our service at which time they told us we would owe extravagant fees for terminating services early. We told them we had stopped payment on the automatic account withdrawal. The next day they attempted to charge our account "thru the back door". And don't try to talk to them - no one speaks English as a first language and when you tell them you cannot understand them they act irate. These people are the most dishonest, corrupt company I have ever dealt with and I am 65 years old. Don't ever do business with them.

My complaint is like all the other complaints! You get locked into a internet service, and are unable to get service! Time it's over, you're paying way higher prices than advertised, or pay the opt out price of hundreds of dollars! This company has all their ends and outs covered! To the point of getting you so frustrated, you hang up on them! Who knows a class action Lawyer who would want to take on this massive scam company, in a Class Action Lawsuit! Such a Lawyer would make lots of money!

I signed up with HughesNet because I was promised service in my area. Service was very slow and more often I had no service. The service I did have only lasted for a few minutes. I had many calls with them to try and fix the problems, with no luck. But no one mentioned that they could not service my area. I paid out a lot of monies for just the two weeks I was with them. I feel someone should have told me that service was not available in my area. Very sad and unhappy.

The slowest internet you'll ever have. You might as well be throwing $100 plus out the window each month. We had to get this because the area we live in, it's seriously horrible. Not one good thing I can say about Hughes Net.

Had HughesNet out and it never worked and I never used it. Cancelled and they charged me hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for "early cancellation". Called to speak with them and no one was willing to help me in any way. Very poor company, very poor customer service. I would suggest no one ever consider using this company for any reason.

I got HughesNet internet service because it was associated with Direct TV and that had been very reliable. The service has rarely worked since we got it several months ago. When I called for help the first time, they kept me on the phone for an hour directing me to change various internet addresses on my wifi. After this fix, the service worked for a day or two and then began failing. The second time I called, they told me that my Hughesnet satellite dish had moved and was no longer set on the satellite. They told me it would cost me $125 to correct this problem, but if I called after the service call, they would give me 50% off. The satellite dish was on the roof and no one touched it, so this was a very strange explanation.
On the day of the service call, the technician said he had fixed it, but also disclosed that if someone was watching a streaming service such as Netflix, no one else could be using the internet. After he left, the internet still didn't work. On my third call, I asked to cancel my service because it didn't work. The first person I talked to suggested that Hughesnet could fix the problem. I told her two chances to fix it were enough and that I still wanted to cancel. She then said they were going to charge me $280 to cancel and also that I would have to pay to return Hughesnet's equipment.
Then I asked for the supervisor. The only new information I learned from the supervisor was that he claimed that the router, which makes the wifi devices work, and was installed by Hughesnet was not Hughesnet's responsibility because "the installer probably sold you that." He then said that Hughesnet does not supply wifi, they supply internet, and none of this is their responsibility. I told him in the first instance that I wanted to use Hughesnet for our Ipads, kindles and laptops. He repeated the demand for the $280 and return of the equipment. I think Hughesnet is a scam which has unfortunately tied itself to Direct TV.

I signed up with HughesNet in January of this year and has proved to be one of the biggest mistakes I've made thus far. I've had nothing but trouble from slow speed to constant kicking me out. I've called numerous times and have even written reviews they sent me and said they would call the next day to discuss the issues in my review. That never happened.
When I tried to cancel I was informed it would cost me $400 to do so. That was when I found out I was under contract. They said I was sent an email. Hmm maybe they should've disclosed that information while talking to me on the phone when I was ordering service. I was able to have $30 removed from my bill for 6 months but I told the customer service that wasn't helping the fact I don't have Internet and I'm trying to run a business.
Every person I have spoken with at that company are like robots reading off a sheet on what to say. I'm beyond angry and this company should be driven out of business as they are a scam. The only way they're still in business is because of that 2 year contract they don't tell you about and the exorbitant fees for canceling early and the added on fees of not returning equipment on time which is their fault for not sending the box back to the consumer in a timely manner and not being clear on what it is they want back. WORST COMPANY EVER!!!

I have HughesNet now and I absolutely hate it. I have had their service a grand total of two months and it has taken me one month to know that I cannot wait for the two year contract to be up. The service is impossibly slow after my data allowance runs out and as a college student who relies heavily on having an internet connection I'm not sure what I am going to do when classes start again, right now I rely on my cell phone carrier's data to close the gap between the time my data runs out on my HughesNet data plan and the beginning of the next cycle. My cell phone carrier's internet is faster and that's after they've cut my high speed data off. I'm absolutely miserable with their slow speeds and when my contract is up I will not be renewing my service even if it means having to live without the internet.

Cable internet does not come to the area that I live in so I had to settle with satellite internet. I had read terrible reviews about the companies available to me, including Hughesnet, but since I had the opportunity to work from home, I had no choice. When I called Hughesnet, I informed them that I would be using a work phone that connected through my internet. They didn't skip a beat and signed me right up. They said that their internet would work just fine for me. I had it installed one week prior to the date that I was to start working from home. Though no fault of Hughesnet, it took my company 5 additional weeks to get me everything I needed to work from home.
On my very first day of work from home, I tried to answer a phone and that's when the trainwreck began. Apparently, with satellite internet, when you try to talk on a phone that runs through the internet, there is a delay due to the conversation having to go up to a satellite then back to your phone. This delay caused my patients (I work for a doctor's office) to hang up because they thought I was breaking up. This is no way for one to speak with their doctor's office. When I called Hughesnet, they did acknowledge that there would be a delay (something they did not inform me of when I ordered the service). Keeping in mind that this is 5 weeks past the initial install date, I was one week over my "trial" of their service.
They will not cancel my service. I am now locked into a 2 year contract with this despicable company. I asked the account manager why I was told that this service would work for me when I ordered it. He responded that it does work, there's just a delay. I asked him if he would like to call into his doctor's office and speak with them in this manner and he said that he would not like that at all. However, he would not cancel my contract. I asked to speak with someone above him and he stated that he is an account manager, there is no one above him. I asked to speak with whoever it was that he answered to and he refused to transfer me to that person.
Buyer beware, this company lies and the minute you have a problem, they will not help you out at all. I wish I had gone with my gut instinct on this one but I was very excited to work from home. Now I can't work from home and I have this internet bill for the next 2 years, which I have absolutely no need for. I am also a single mom so paying the early termination fee is not possible as I don't even have the funds to get my vehicle fixed at this time. If this company burned to the ground, the world would be better off.

My husband and I had to get service with Hughes Net as that was all that was offered in our area. After 2 years of dealing with their terrible customer service and internet we were finally able to switch to Comcast. When ending my service I was told I would be charged 145.00 to end out the remainder of my so called contract (was not informed I was in a contract) and was told the would ship a box to mail the product back. Almost 3 weeks a empty and I mean empty boxes shows up. No padding to pack the equipment in. No instructions on what to send back. Nothing. I packed up everything. We had shipped it back. 3 months later we receive a charge on our credit card for 206.00. After contacting them I was told we did not ship the product back in time. I had to dispute the charge with my bank to get my money back. They have to be the worse company to do business with. DO NOT USE THEM. AWFUL!!! JUST AWFUL.

We recently moved to the country and signed up with DirecTV for TV and Internet - they pushed us off onto HughesNet for the internet portion of the agreement. At the time, we were moving and things were hectic and being from the city we thought, how bad could it be? Sounds legit, they SAY it's internet service so it HAS to be internet service RIGHT? WRONG! There is a huge data cap, the weekend the service was set up we watched 1 30 minute program on demand and rewound two movies to start at the beginning and that used up our data for the MONTH! We called when the service wasn't working and was told that we were using too much data. The next month we tried to be careful and not use too much, it was all gone in two days. DirecTV has this feature where you can rewind a movie if you catch it in the middle BUT...it uses data so, we can't use this feature.
After you use up all your data you can't use any of the On Demand features on DirecTV. We asked what we could do but the only option was to DOUBLE our payment for twice the data...that would give us, at most, 4 days out of the month to use the service so why would we do that? I have emailed them, I have taken the stupid surveys that they keep sending me to see how I like the service, I have called them and they want $340 to cancel a service that does not work. When I called today I was told that they could see that the signal wasn't working properly and they could send out a technician to work on it...they could see that we have not had good signal for a while but assumed that we were happy with that because we have not called them in a couple of months. WE DIDN'T CALL THEM BECAUSE WE WERE FED UP WITH CALLING THEM!
My response was that we should get a refund for the service that we have paid for and NOT RECEIVED but apparently they have no record of me calling to complain, no record of the three surveys that I took and told them the service didn't work, no record of us being unhappy at all so...they want money to cancel. Do not get signed up with this company. DO NOT THINK IT WILL WORK! I will be reporting them to the BBB and as soon as possible I will get away from them. YOU should also be aware that they charge $400 to cancel the service and they only remove $15 a month from that charge. I signed up with them at the end of February and it is August and they want $340 to cancel...their math is wrong as well.

When I first signed on with HughesNet, I bought my equipment, paid for it! About three days before my first billing cycle was up, noticed I was unable to download Netflix, contacted HughesNet, that is when I learned I had used all my time. In order for this not to happen again, I purchased an upgrade to allow more time. This went into effect 24 July 2016. Today I tried to download a Netflix, today is 09 Aug 2016, guess what, no time! HughesNet says that on 24 July 2016, between 0800 and 0900, I used almost all my time allowance. How? I live alone, Smokey, my dog doesn't know my passwords. Sad part is neither my pad, nor my laptop have been used very little this month! How can they get by with this? Are there no checks and balances for this service?
I only signed up for HughesNet because AT&T has no lines in this area, and the local carrier, Frontier Tel said they could not sign up any new WIFI until they upgraded their equipment, as their system was overloaded. I did not know when I moved to Scottsburg, Ind that I was moving out in the boondocks, and in no way am I belittling this area. It is beautiful, with beautiful hard working people, and they deserve to know what they are dealing with when left at the mercy of a company like HughesNet.
Can someone explain how you can you can use almost a month allowance in one hour? And I pay over $100 a month for this privilege. Old retired folks such as myself, on a fixed income can't afford this. I have drafted complaints to AARP to all the Veterans support groups, and any other retiree groups warning them of the "catch 22" that Hughes Net won't explain. When you do call their customer service, you cannot find anyone who speaks or understands enough English to help you! Someone needs to warn senior citizens to avoid this company, and if not for getting nicer pictures of my grandchildren, I would disavow using internet all together!

When I subscribed to HughesNet, I told them my main reason was to watch videos. The technician was late arriving to install. After he installed the equipment, he told me it would be at least 24 hours before I had service. I did not once receive service without talking to tech support. I spent every evening on the phone with tech support for at least an hour or more. They final sent a technician out, He said "Oh, you have a faulty antenna. I will call you to let you know what they plan to do." I never spoke to him again. At the end of three weeks with no service, I told them I wanted out as they offered me 30-day trial. Then they had the nerve to bill me for the "three weeks service". I told them I felt they owed me for my time. Now they are threatening to ruin my credit. I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy.

I am in a rural area and this was my only choice for Internet for several years. It was a step up from dial-up... My family and I learned to deal with the "threshold limits", couldn't watch movies, couldn't play video games, couldn't enjoy the internet. High speed Internet came available May of this year and after 12 years, I could finally get high speed... Happy day! When I cancelled with HughesNet they were nice very thankful for my years of service with them.
Now, I just noticed that my credit card was charged $320.63. I called in and it was horrible. First off they wanted the tracking number for the returned equipment in order to assist me, even after they were the ones that sent me the postage paid return UPS label, all I had to do was drop off at a UPS Store... I asked them, "Don't you have access to the UPS label? You generated it." After 5 minutes he came back with, yes they received the modem, but not the little receiver (on top of my house) so they had to charge me. They never asked for that in the original box. After 12 years of Internet, and the latest equipment I received from them was 5 years ago... They are charging me $320.63, when they didn't ask for it initially. What a joke!

I cancelled my Hughesnet service on August 1, 2016. They told me they were sending a box for me to send back the equipment. They also told me I had to take the radio transmitter off of the roof of my house for which, I had to have my husband and a friend borrow a ladder get the radio transmitter off the roof. Needless to say the return box arrived at my house this past Monday with a note stating that if the equipment wasn't returned in 21 days they are going to charge me! Will see about that!!! They were the ones who installed it all. They have all the equipment needed.
I had to wait for 11 days of thunderstorms to pass and a return box to get this done. But as for the service itself, it literally sucked for a lack of a better word!!! If I maxed out on the allotted time per month it went so slow it was rendered useless. You accumulate monthly tokens for paying on time. Like that's a joke!!! They sent me a box with a return label that I returned the equipment and it was returned back to me as not deliverable. I was then charged $318 out of my account, after the box was returned to sender. In addition, they expect you to remove some device from the exterior that I had a technical person look for and could not identify.
They never offered to send a technician out to identify what this mysterious part was. I spoke with Lucas ** (HughesNet CSR) and he indicated that I needed to go back out to the house I sold and locate this mysterious receiver part. I explained to him, I sold the house and do not have access to the home. I am now waiting on another box to send the modem back and expect this will be returned as well. The girl who sold me the contract said she uses it herself and could stream all month long. The install was a joke. I had to run a new cable and ground out their own equipment properly, because it took too long to get someone out there to check why the internet was dropping out all the time. I have my own business and for life of me don't understand how they have been in business since 1971. They must have changed ownership recently.
I canceled my contract early, paid the ridiculous fee and now they want $300 more for the equipment that doesn't work anyhow. They couldn't even do the courtesy of picking up their own stuff. So if youre thinking of going with this company do yourself a favor go somewhere else. I got my daughter a cell phone with a hot spot. Luckily my contract has ran out so now I can do what I want.

Had Starband internet at a remote camp in the middle of Alaska since 2005 and of course after them going out of business last fall switched over to HughesNet. I use it for email and some phone (when working okay) and for basic communication and don't expect video or fast downloads etc. I feel bad for people that have to use live support as it sounds like often a terrible experience but I would like to say HughesNet is a world ahead of the Starband I had for many years. I was a certified installer of my own Starband equipment and the ease of installation and services and info available right from the modem are light years ahead of Starband which was a very complicated and user unfriendly system. Quality of bandwidth and connection is better and quite usable.
I think people expect cable quality or speed sometimes and don't know if any dish will get you that without spending big money. We just want basic communications and HughesNet gives us that so far in a user friendly way. Love the ease of knowing what you're using and the shut down when you go over but still able to get an emergency email out. Just don't know what would be better for the price.

Worst experience ever. We had service in our family members name who had been living with us at the time and decided to switch it into our name once they moved out. A week in we were calling HughesNet every day with problems, finally cancelled OR SO WE THOUGHT. And come to find out we have been charged for the past 6 months for service we haven't used. Literally have had everything taken out because we switched to service electric. They will only give us back two months of our money so we're SOL with the rest of the money they got to run off with! I'm a mother of three and can't catch a break! ANYONE IN VERNON NJ AREA DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS SERVICE! THEY'RE HORRIBLE!

We ordered services with them about a month ago. When we were inquiring about the services, nobody ever told us that we would be getting limited data of 10 GB. We were told we would be getting about 10-12 Mbps speed, and that would be enough for 4 people to use. Now, after 4 weeks of us being out of the country we find out that our internet is super slow, and when we called customer service, we were informed that our data is over limit. This is the first time we hear about limited data!!! They should train your representative BETTER!!! We actually ordered services through CHAT on the website.
We asked to reimburse all our charges for installation and service, but they said we would be charged additional $400!!! It is a FRAUD. We spent hours on the phone today to solve this issue, and nobody was able to help. One of the managers was supposed to call us back, and we have not heard back from anyone. I had to cancel my credit card in order not to be charged again!

They want me to pay 120 to have a tech come out, say tough, "We got you on a 2 year contract." This is the worst experience of internet, customer service and a company overall that I have ever dealt with. They should be turned in the BBB for scamming people.

We could not get internet from anyone else in rural Wyoming while at a family place. We pay $87.64 for a connection that is slow, frequently disconnects (like many times a day I have to unplug and reconnect the router). It can't really stream audio, nevermind video, and it is so difficult to do any work, even simple text that my family often has to drive to a cafe 15 miles away just to get a better connection to send and receive email. This service is a complete rip-off and they know we are trapped with no other choice. So infuriating.

When I signed up I was told that my service was going to be 19.99 a month for phone. I signed up on 5/25/16 but I was not able to use my phone until 6-12-16. At that point I could only call out so I called them and then I lost all phone service until 6-19-16. I would call everyday between May and the day I got it and was told to wait 24 hours and call back if I didn't have it. I can't even count how many hours I spent on the phone. Not once was I able to talk to someone in the United States of America. The only people I could talk to were in the Philippines. Now I called and I am told that the service is not 19.99 it is 29.99. The only reason went with this company is because it was 19.99. Well I was told that the representative misinformed me that they were not going to do anything about it. I was stuck for the 2 years. When the installer was to show up at 8 am and he called at 10 and said he wasn't going to be able to come 'til 6 pm.
When he came he was very nice and helpful but he said we could pay him for the modem so that's what we did. He did not in turn pay the company and we didn't get a receipt or any paperwork from him so we are just out. Hughes Net said that the drivers aren't allowed to sell the modems and since we have no proof they couldn't do anything about it. Once again we are out. I said that not one thing that I was told I got and the response was then you can cancel the services for 600.00. And the reason why I called in the first was the internet was moving slower than I was told. I told that I used all the data in 6 days and they could upgrade me for 20.00 more a month.
I would not recommend this company to anyone. They said whatever to get us to use their company. The services were going to be 79.99 a month for both internet and phone but now I have to pay almost double that and they have no record of me being told that they were 79.99 even though I have the case number of the conversation. I have a book full of case numbers and nobody will take them. WATCH OUT they are a TWO-FACED company. They will tell you anything to get you to sign up and they will not stand by their word but you have to stay with them for the time period. You don't have a choice. I can't even to begin to tell you how much money and time we are put already and it's only been a month. They refuse to let you speak to anyone in the United States of America.

We were constantly being disconnected and it took several minutes to navigate from one internet page to the next. We removed our router and tried the service with one PC and had the same problems. At this point, we contacted Hughes to disconnect service and we were told that we had to pay a $250 cancellation fee. I deny that I owe Hughes Network Systems the $493.11 stated in letter of 27 Jun 2016 based on the following facts: Hughes Network Systems had entered into an agreement with my wife to supply internet services to ** beginning MAY 2015. Prior to the end of the first 30 days of our contract with Hughes Network, my wife called Hughes Network and discontinued the internet service, and I was so informed.
Subsequently (month of Jun 2015) my wife entered us into a contract with Comcast and I was billed by Comcast for identical services, beginning Jun 2015; not having received any billing from Hughes Network, I had a reasonable right to assume Hughes Network had performed their obligation to un-enroll me and not take unauthorized withdrawals from an account that gave me little, almost no, notice of these withdrawals. In fact, I claim that I am owed a total of $1,387.68 from Hughes Network based on the following facts: Beginning June 2015 I have not use Hughes Network services at any time. I contracted for, and received, and paid for, internet service from Comcast. During this same interval, Hughes Network continued to make unauthorized withdrawals from a Visa debit card drawn on my investment account.
Hughes Network Systems currently owes ME a total of $1,387.68. This money was withdrawn from my account for the month of MAY 2015 thru the month of Apr 2016 when I put a stop to these unauthorized withdrawals. A total of 13 unauthorized withdrawals have been made. It is an arguable fact that perhaps some daily charges for the month of MAY 2015 may be subject to proration. I currently have a modem belonging to Hughes Network. Shall I mail this to you? I did not discover this error in Hughes Network withdrawals until I transferred internet and TV services from the La Fonte address to a new home. When I put my TV provider on hold, I realized they were going to hook up to a satellite with a dish. This is when I discovered a double billing for internet services.
The unauthorized withdrawals went unnoticed because they were automated from an account that had direct deposits of dividends. The continued rise in the value of this account masked the withdrawals until I drilled down into the details. The theft of these amounts also went unnoticed because they were not informed with monthly mailings to the La Fonte property. Upon discovery, I called Hughes Network and discussed this with their representative and again informed them that I was not using their services and would not pay for it. I offered to settle this matter if they would return a good deal of my money. Hughes countered with an unacceptable offer and added insult to injury when they demanded the additional $493.11.

Please avoid these people and do not believe anything they say. They have scammed me for the last penny they ever get from me. I explained that I was getting this service for my grandchildren that lived in an area with no internet service so they could watch movies. They never once told me that after 2 movies their internet was used up for the rest of the month. Also more money was drafted from my bank account than I was originally told. I called to ask them why the service was not working and they said our data was used for the month. They told us to go in and change the setting on the netflix and see if that would work. Also was advised to purchase a new modem which we did.
After questioning why the draft was much more than I had expected they said it was taxes they had forgot to tell me about. Two days later another draft was taken out of my bank account and when I called I got the same story of it was charges I had not been told about. At my age this is very scary that people can just take money out of my account when they want to. I told the lady that I just wanted to cancel my service - that their misrepresentation of all the fees was more than I could afford.
With no service I just assumed it had been canceled until Sunday July 10 another large fee with Hughes internet was drafted from my account and again much more than I had been originally told. I called and asked them what was being done with my account and apparently on their end my services never was cancelled. Now I'm being threatened with extra fees I was never informed of. Since it's been installed I discovered that there is a cap on high speed data that we reach during week 2 of the month. After that you have to buy more at a high price. My bad, I didn't read the contract close enough. I was not informed of this on the phone at purchase time. Now, I've been having trouble using the DirecTV On Demand feature. It won't download anything or it can take 2 days to download a 30 minute show.
DirecTV told me it is an internet problem as my Netflix and other apps are fine. Called HughesNet and Bridget ** told me that HughesNet will not work with DirecTV On Demand because satellite internet IPAD addresses keep changing and DirecTV requires one that doesn't change. I asked why they sell them together and she said to save money. Nowhere in my contract does it say HughesNet won't work with DirecTV. I'm cancelling but they are charging me $400 less $15 per month (3 months) I've had the service. What a rip off when it won't even work.

Living out in the country is not easy when it comes to internet services. After not being satisfied with DSL I decided to go with Hughes Satellite. What a mistake it was. I had very poor internet with downloads speeds of 1.62 megabytes. They never could fix the issue and I spent hours on the phone with them. The company hires a different company to install their service and hires another company to do the troubleshooting. After hours of spending time with all of them on the phone (minimum 2 hours and as much as 3:15 hours on the phone many days in a row), I decided to cancel the service.
They are a very complicated company that simply cannot fix their own problems. The best department they have is their sales department. The other departments were very inefficient. They even wanted me to pay for the troubleshooting company to see why it didn't work with only having the service less than 36 hours. I cannot recommend this company to anyone. Signed up with Hughesnet on 7/13/2015. Rep didn't bother to mention anything about a credit check just went ahead and did it. Seeing as my credit already took a hit I had to go with Hughesnet. Specifically asked the rep how VoIP works on Hughesnet and he boasted how great it was. Advised the rep we needed to use a Verizon cell phone booster as well. He told us that would work as well. When we got the internet hooked up I asked the installer many questions before he hooked everything up such as if I would be able to do port forwarding. The installer seemed unintelligent and told me I could. Meanwhile during installation he proceeded to use our bathroom and stunk up the whole house.
After services were hooked up I found out that VoIP does not work one bit. The sound is all garbled and delayed. After this I found out to have any phone service I would have to pay Hughesnet more money and sign another contract for phone service. Next I found out it was completely impossible to use port forwarding or use any services such as open DNS further limiting any use I had for this service. However the best is yet to come. Hughesnet told us we would get 15G of data per month and that we would be able to do so much with it. During the first few days we monitored our usage like a hawk not noticing any difference in the amount of data we used.
Next we realized that the data was being reset multiple times per day!!! We thought this was how the service was to work as it continued to do this for 3 weeks. Then after 3 weeks our data crashed down to nothing and not even a google search page would load. I couldn't even load my account with Hughesnet. After contacting Hughesnet they advised that the data was reset to allow for any updating of computers before use of the service. WHAT RUBBISH!!! We used OVER 100GBs of data!!! Most homes have an average of 2 computers. A windows install ISO is only 4 gigs and installs at 15 GBS. Unless Im running a call center this is absolutely ridiculous.
To think Hughesnet was almost par for 3 weeks then have our service go to absolutely nothing will not do for 2 years! The ping rate is atrocious and the latency makes me puke. You get crummy internet at best for about 1 week until your data is completely gone then you have no service for 3 weeks. Keep in mind that most homes have windows computers which download updates without your knowledge in the background more than just once a month especially with windows 10 not allowing you to turn it off youre screwed.
We got nothing from Hughesnet but a disgusting installer, a disgusting bill for only 15 Gb of data lasting about 1 week, then nothing for 3, and now a huge as cancellation bill. Oh plus we had to move due to a pervert moving in next door and to cancel we had to go back to the house struggling to take down the satellite while the perv watched us saying inappropriate things. I proceeded to have to go out to buy tools just to take it down. I wanted to cancel your services after 3 weeks but had to bare through months of crappy service while paying an arm and a leg.

I requested that they waive the cancellation fee as I had not received any service AT ALL, and was refused. I hope consumer affairs would look into this matter as it is appalling that a company would be allowed to get away with committing fraud on their customers. I was looking for a wifi provider because of the TERRIBLE service I received at Comcast. I was limited because some of the service providers I found that had good reviews did not serve the area that I was moving to. I finally found one satellite provider (HughesNet.com) that did service my area so I called them to see what the charges would be. When I called I didn't want to leave anything to chance. I told the Customer Service person that I wanted to be able to stream video on Netflix, Youtube and probably HBO and that this would be my ONLY means of watching video or "television". I was told by the Representative that my son would not be able to game but small loss with the gain of getting rid of Comcast! I was also told that if I wasn't happy with the service I would disconnect it in 30 days. This seemed a very short timeline to make that decision but in a deceitful business such as wireless and internet providers, I wasn't surprised.
Initially, all was well but I wasn't in my new home long enough to really test my new internet. Then they billed my credit card without emailing me or a sending me a bill in the mail- I was just suddenly charged on my account! And not at a very opportune time at that. Then, about 10 days after the new month's worth of service rolled over, I was having difficulty getting Netflix to play and when I called for help I was told that I was out of streaming minutes. What? I was barely into the month! They added more "free" minutes but only 2 gb. We blew through that in a day. I called again. 5 gb was added. We blew through that in 2 days. It is now midway through the month in my plan and I am out of streaming minutes and when I called to complain I was told that I was never promised unlimited data. And yet I was very plain about what I wanted and the customer service rep never said that I would not have the minutes I would need to do that.
I talked to the customer service rep I was talking to refused to give me more minutes and said I had already received as many free "tokens" (which translated to streaming gigs) as I could have for the month and it's only half over! I told the Rep that I understood what he was saying but that didn't change the fact that my original conversation was that I had been told that it would not be a problem to stream all my video from their satellite wifi and I was NOT told there was a limited stream. This is a deceptive business practice and they should not be able to get away with it by saying that I had a month to decide if it was enough. AND the customer service person was as rude as any I dealt with at Comcast.
Well done HughesNet.com! I thought only the big 3 could be that big of ** but you have proved me wrong!! Now I am locked into 2 years of another TERRIBLE Wifi provider and I am fed up with them in the second month. After my installation I had internet service for 3 days before it stopped working. We couldn't watch Netflix because it kept rebuffering every 20 seconds or so. My phone kept saying no internet connection available and my son could not play any of his online games.
After calling customer service I was told that I had already used up my data for the month! When I incredulously asked how that was possible after only 3 days I was told that I was only allowed 10 gb per billing cycle and they did not offer an unlimited plan. When I tried to cancel I was told I would be charged $698 for early termination! I never agreed to any amount of time let alone the two years they said I was under contract for. I told the representative that I would not pay that $698 and if they wanted to receive any money for the service they have provided me they would waive that cancellation fee.
He then told me that he could weigh 50% of it and I said that that was not good enough. I wanted the entire amount waived! After spending over an hour and a half on the phone I got them to agree to waive the entire $698 but only because I had tried to cancel the service before the 30-day trial. Was up but the call had been disconnected before the cancellation was complete. Long story short to not even bother with Hughes Net! This sounded great! So I started the process of setting up an account with them while simultaneously looking up customer reviews of the company. While still on the phone I found thousands of negative reviews regarding HughesNet so I told them that I decided not to go with their service. The Hughes net employee told me not to listen to the online reviews and that I do not know the real situation with those people and they do not know what they are talking about!
This of course helped me with my decision. These are their customers and they talk about them like this! I told her that I am sure I do not want their service. Then she said that it is too late that the order has already been placed. So, I told her to cancel the order. She said that she cannot and gave me another number to call to cancel it. I hang up the phone and call the number she gave me and the new representative tells me that they see the order, but it has not yet finished processing, but it will be canceled and I will not be charged. I thank them and hang up the phone.
An hour later, I check my bank account and there is a charge of $168.95 from HughesNet! So, I call back and speak to yet another representative and explain once again that I do not want the service and that it was to be canceled. They tell me once again the order has been canceled and that the funds would be returned to my account within 24 hours and the bank may take up to a week to process the transaction. Once again, I say thank you and hang up. Three days later I get a call while I'm at work. It is a Hughes net representative asking when a good time is to do the installation. Once again I explain that I do not want the service and to cancel the order.
When I go on lunch three hours later I once again call Hughes net and explain to the representative that I canceled my order three days ago and that I was told my money would be returned to my account. They told me that the cancellation request had never been submitted and they would do that for me now! After hanging up, I called my bank and had them block all future transactions with HughesNet and reported the transaction as a fraudulent charge. I have never received any service from this company and still have not had my money returned now almost a week from my original call. Stay away from this garbage company! Save yourself from this nightmare!

I started with HughesNet in February. The service is slow and sporadic. The first month seemed to be good and gotten worse since. I contacted them 6/21 to cancel only to be informed I have a 24 month contract. I never signed or agreed to a contract like that. Nor do I have any paperwork saying any such. I was informed that it would cost me $385 to cancel a contract I never agreed to. They never told of the 30 day cancellation time without penalty. When I called to start the service I requested paper billing. That never happened - they continued to take out of my checking account. I need to find some way to get rid of this poor service from these dishonest people. I would not recommend them to anyone.

I have been online since 1993 and by orders of magnitude this is the WORST Internet I've ever had. I disregarded the many, many, many negative reviews, rationalizing that I didn't have any other choice but dial-up. My recommendation, go with the dial-up. Not that it's any better than Hughes but at least you won't be paying broadband prices for dial-up level service.
The sales reps are really nice, they'll ask what you use your Internet for and will tell you they have a plan that will meet your needs. Don't believe it. I told them that we are a family of three that likes to stream Netflix and music and game, and that I telecommute 1-2 days a week and they told me they had just the plan to meet my needs. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. Even with moderate use - normal surfing, only one of us gaming in order to conserve data, zero streaming, a few YouTube videos - we burned through their totally manufactured monthly data allotment in about 10 days. Forget telecommuting, which I'm furious about because I moved to a rural location on the assumption that I wouldn't have to commute an hour each way every single day. Get dial-up or invest in a T1 line. Get a mobile hotspot to tide you over while you research your options. But do not sign on with this company.

Do not get HughesNet service. It is horrible. The speed is not fast and you are limited on the usage you can use. Oh, but for more money they will give you more usage. I was just on the phone with them for an hour trying to cancel. I have had the service for 3 months and want to cancel. However there is an early termination fee. For me to cancel would cost $385. That is ridiculous if I am not happy with your service I should be able to cancel. The termination fee goes down $15 every month. They said that it's automatically taken out of your account once you cancel. They have never given anyone a refund (so I was told). I am now stuck with this crappy service for 21 more months unless I pay up. But they did upgrade my service to the next available package. I would much rather cancel than get the upgrade. Save yourself the money and go somewhere else unless you want the terrible service or pay an early termination fee.

I moved while about halfway through the 2 yr contract. If I cancelled, would have been charged a fee. So I reluctantly transferred my service (I was already a dissatisfied customer because of Hughes voice service, etc). They eagerly offered me a deal to transfer! More gigs and less $! Free setup! But there is not a line of sight to the satellite. The installer says I can get out of my contract. This turns into a whole thing, mainly because they mailed the return box (you have to send back the modem and risk your life to return a receiver from the satellite dish) to my old address. I called, went round and round, FINALLY they agreed to mail a box to the correct address.
Meanwhile I got a bill and a threatening letter for not returning their equipment. Box arrived. I returned equipment. Even got a call from a native english speaker following up on my experience (at some point I filed a complaint with bbb). She assured me they had received their equipment, I owed nothing on the account. Until today, when I get a collection notice! When I call they say it's an early termination fee. The amount is the exact same as my new monthly bill was supposed to be. I was told I owed nothing and my account was closed. STAY AWAY from this horrible company.

I ordered HughesNet when I was in an area that had no cable, no phone, and no cell signal. It was my lifeline. So I ordered HughesNet Voice, which worked great and my plan kept it from deducting data when I used the phone. Everything was fine until it came time to move. I called two weeks ahead of time to let them know that I wanted to disconnect from HughesNet Voice but wanted to keep the internet service (I was moving to a place with cell reception). I let them know on which date I wanted my service terminated and confirmed this information before I hung up.
About an hour later, my phone no longer worked. I had to drive 11 miles down the hill to a place where I had reception to call them and find out what was going on. The rep told me that I had called to cancel my service and I told him that my disconnect date was scheduled for two weeks later. He explained that once a customer calls to disconnect, it happens immediately and there is no scheduling of disconnects. I asked him if I could reinstate my service and then I would call to cancel once I moved. He told me that once HughesNet Voice is disconnected, it can never be re-connected, ever. I told him this was very poor customer service and I wanted to speak to a supervisor, which I was denied.
A day later, I talked to a different rep, who told me that I could re-connect but would need to have a new number. I was satisfied with that. However, the re-connect never happened. I called back a day later and was told that my case was "being escalated" and that somebody would return my call. Of course, this was impossible because I was living where there was no cell reception and would not be able to receive a call. I eventually let it go, as it was now a week before I was supposed to move. There was never any resolution to this issue.
The cons: Abominable customer service. When you call, it is almost always somebody in a different country who barely speaks English. If you're thinking Netflix or gaming, you can forget it. The data cap is oppressive. 10 GB means you can watch maybe 2-3 Netflix movies before you're throttled until the end of the billing cycle. Paying $61 per month for these limitations is completely unacceptable. The pros: The speed is decent.
My advice: Use if you are truly desperate. And if you want out, they charge a very hefty termination fee. Be sure to cancel your credit card before you cancel HughesNet, because they will rock your world by automatically deducting hundreds from your bank account the second you hang up the phone after you cancel. Very, very bad service. I would rate negative stars if I could.

I too have been scammed by HughesNet. After spending 3 years with them with lousy service and even worse customer service I changed internet to bundle with DISH. Lo and behold that internet was with HughesNet! I called to cancel my account as instructed. The service rep began to give me this big story about how much they would have paid me to stay with them (even though I am still with them). I said no one ever told me that when I called the first 10x complaining. Anyway, service rep told me he would cancel immediately and that because I no longer had a contract I would owe nothing. Fast forward to 10 days later, I am online checking CC charges lo and behold there is a charge for the next month of svc. I call and am told that because I missed the cut off date I owe for the next month, but I am in luck because I can still use the svc.
I told them that because I am currently a HughesNet customer billing me is not only unethical but illegal. The woman gets very snotty, and says "whatever". I call back and talk to someone else who assures me an immediate cancellation has gone in and I will be receiving my money back but not until next month. I argue that. He hangs up on me. Currently awaiting the boxes promised, and watching for charge reversal. Horrible service, worse customer service. If there were ANYTHING else available in my area I would use it. I thought I was getting away from it by going with DISH, I was wrong!!! There is no speed but slow, undependable service, and unethical business. I would not give any stars if this field were not required.

And your "customer service" rep will spill the beans. "It's not your equipment nor your dish alignment. Our system has been experiencing challenges." FOR MONTHS! Call the service number before subscribing. The first thing you'll hear is a disclaimer concerning Hughes' acknowledgment that THEIR SYSTEM DOESN'T Work. Mind blowing, to say the least.
Never, under any circumstances should anyone engage in a contract with these idiots. My contract was ended over one and a half years ago. I've begged them to get their junk off of my house. Have had HughesNet since about 2011, first signed up on the Spaceway3 (HN9000) service with 1.5Mbps download and 500MB of daily allowance. Compared to Dial-up (dial-up here was about 18.6Kbps) it was amazing, but compared to cable services, it was, of course, much slower, and had serious limitations. When HughesNet released Jupiter (Gen4) we switched over to the 20GB/20GB service plan with downloads up to 15Mbps. While we don't see such speeds in the afternoons and evenings, we do see those speeds, and better during the early mornings and late at night. At around 7PM Eastern, we typically see speeds dip to the 3-6Mbps range, but that is sufficient for browsing the internet and light YouTube video watching.
All in all, this is a great service for rural folks who have either really bad DSL connections, or Dial-up service. The trick is, for most people, figuring out how to manage your data, and how to conserve it to last the entire month. The one time I had to call customer service, we was greeted by a foreign tier 1 rep, which walked through the basics of troubleshooting, and eventually got to the point where they issued a technician to come out and re-aim our dish. Wasn't horrible, but, reps should be able to think, "SQF is 1, then aim or weather is impacting service" when the customer states that to the rep.
Pros: Gives the advertised up to speeds, healthy sum of data for one or two people that don't stream frequently. Cons: Even the highest service plan doesn't meet the needs of most families that want to stream HD content 24/7. Speeds aren't guaranteed. 2-year contracts can be stressful even if you plan to keep service.
Would I trade HughesNet for AT&T Wireless? NO, the data cost is too high for 4G LTE compared to Hughes. Would I trade HughesNet for Cable? Yep, anytime. The only reason I can't and won't give HughesNet a 5-star rating, is because when compared to land-based carriers, they just can't compete, and never will be able to due to the differences in technology.

I would never recommend Hughes to anyone. We signed a contract for Hughes internet service @ our vacation home in March of 2016. Installation was great and prompt. We used the service then and in June the service was down. Contacted customer service several times about the problem. They did their in house check of the system and determined that the modem was bad. Were told that the service rep could be here in SEVEN DAYS or they could mail out the needed replacement within the same time frame. When I requested to speak to a supervisor, first I was told there was none available, then the tech told me her supervisor did not have a phone. End result, their equipment is being packed up and returned to them. We are stuck with a $400 penalty and Hughes has another very dissatisfied customer. Moral of this read and take heed to customer reports.

We went with HughesNet as there were no other providers in our area... HUGE MISTAKE! Stay FAR away! If you live in a house with paper thin walls you may be OK but we live in a historic home with thick walls. We even bought the extenders that their technician suggested buying to increase signal strength within the house. The signal was barely streaming through. Most days you would have to sit right on top of the wireless router or the extender to send business emails. On days that it would rain we would be without service until it stopped. When we'd call they'd say it wasn't the signal, it was our wireless setup. It took $340 to get away from this company and I hope my experience helps someone else stay far away. There's no telling how much money the lack of internet would have cost our business if there hadn't been our local library. I was not really familiar with bandwidth and transfer rates, etc, when checking into HughesNet. HughesNet does provide a short questionnaire asking what you do when accessing/using the Internet, but either its questions or its calculations are way off, providing answers that state your cost will be less than half of what your real cost will be, once they get you committed for two years of near usury monthly costs.
We NEVER had this problem with AT&T, when we had internet service through AT&T. But now we find AT&T no longer provides Internet service to our area. So it's either cable, or lousy, super expensive service via HughesNet. WARNING! HughesNet is NOT unlimited data usage the way cable is. Further, while AT&T provided like 150 Gb use, HughesNet gives you more like 15-20 Gb use in a month.
I guess having been spoiled by cable internet access (unlimited) and AT&T internet access (150 Gb/month) we didn't have any idea that with HughesNet, our internet access, which hadn't changed any way in how we used it with cable or AT&T, was suddenly running out in allowance BEFORE we'd completed less than two weeks into a given month! That meant buying additional Gb tokens of $16/each additional 2 Gb of use! In just that 1st month of HughesNet service, our bill was over $200!
Now add to that how HughesNet "partner" will tell you that your modem and router aren't top speed, and will try to sell you upgrades on those devices. If that wasn't bad enough, should you choose to save costs and purchase either of those devices yourself, HughesNet "partner" will tell you that these things are "very difficult" to self-install, and how you really shouldn't attempt this on your own. HughesNet "partner" wanted to charge us $100 to allow HughesNet "partner" to install our self-purchased device. And not only that, but also charge us around $100 per each of 5 laptops to ensure we didn't have "issues" (bugs) on any of our 5 devices.
My computer savvy son installed our new routers and we have had no further issues. But just look at what dollar amount we would have been on the hook for had we taken HughesNet advice and agreed to let them dealing with our "alleged" issues! Run, don't walk away from HughesNet. Yes we had experienced "slow times" using cable for both Internet and TV. But then that was when BOTH Internet AND TV were running through the same cable line. This is far less of a slowness issue when you aren't trying to run both cable TV and Internet through the same cable.
SOLUTION? We recommend, if you can't get AT&T U-Verse service, is to get AT&T DIRECTV service, and then cable Internet service. This ensures satellite quality TV service, and unlimited data AGH transfer via cable Internet service. If you can't get AT&T U-Verse, this would be your next best choice regarding both data speeds and related costs that won't pile up. Based on our (learning) experience, how in the world HughesNet thought 20 Gb/month would some kind of "typical" data usage per month for most customers alludes to just how unprofessional and/or profit driven this company really is!!!

I called HughesNet to see if they would have what I need to get internet service with them. I am an online college student. I told them I need to have lots of streaming because we use Netflix and Hulu as our TV. I also have meetings and classes online for college. I told the lady on the phone I needed fast service with lots of data. She said, "oh yes, we have exactly what you need. This will give you more than enough hours of streaming for what you want at the speed you want it." She was very nice and personable and after talking to her, I was confident HughesNet would give me what I need and I paid them $189.00 to come out and hook it up. The guy that hooked it up said, "Last thing you wanna do with this service is watch Netflix! Whatever you do, don't watch videos online!"
Needless to say, I immediately called HughesNet, whose agent said, "the last woman was wrong. With what you are saying you need, this is not the service for you. But, the first month is kind of a trial, so use it and if you still want to cancel at the end, then we will do that." When I hung up, it started sounding fishy, so I called back - that agent tried to throw every deal out there for me to stay, and I finally said - I need streaming and you can't give me enough. I want to cancel and I want my money back and for you to get your equipment off my roof. They would only return half the money, and are now threatening to charge me $100 if we don't get the receiver off the roof ourselves and send it back!
We are all disabled at this house!! We can't get on a roof. We were misled, and scammed for $189, and now they want to charge us MORE for their equipment that should have never been on our roof to begin with! I am appalled!! Now after many calls and requests for help, they tell me that it is because of the fact I have a router and am not hooked directly into the modem even though I was told that wouldn't be a problem when I started with them, now it is their excuse to not give me the service I paid for.
Each time I have called in to talk to someone, they make all kinds of excuses on how this is all my fault. This company must have some of the worst customer service in America. I am 1 year into my 2-year contract. I have had 3 total failures. The second failure was dangerous. I was awakened by a snapping noise from the office. When I checked on it, there were fireballs of molten copper/solder shooting across the papers on the desk from the modem. Luckily, nothing had caught fire yet. I pulled the plug and called Hughes. They seemed amused by the situation. The service technician was also amused. Now the system has failed again. The coax connector was too hot to touch. Pulled the plug and called Hughes again. Now the service is going to cost $125.00. Why should I pay for them to fix their own equipment.
I can't get out of my contract, so I'm stuck like many others. Pay the fee and regain service or pay the monthly charge for nothing! Not good options. I'm sure Hughes' needs are met due to the contract. If they trusted their equipment, why are there service charges after 6 months? What did I do wrong to cause the failures? Nothing! So, why am I penalized for the lousy equipment? Very bad. Can't wait for my contract to expire so I can kick them out of my house for good.

Anyway this girl proceeds to tell me all this great stuff, 10gigs a month, with 50, for between 2:00 A.M. and 8 A.M., that it'll be $35.88 a month (bottom plan). And after the third month (we'll) receive a check, NOT A CREDIT, that we can use for anything just like any check. Well here it is 4th month, no check. Now another thing I noticed was that ONLY the 1st month did we have all 10 gigs on the left graph, lit up, and then the second graph (anytime) gigs was at 50, the second month within an hour of getting them we (supposed to have used up) exactly 6.9 gigs. The same on the 3rd month, the same this month. The girl proceeds to tell me it's because my wife uses Facebook for no more than an hour each day, THAT IT'S BECAUSE OF THEM MAKING IT "AUTOPLAY".
Well that's a lie, because unless you roll your mouse over a video it won't play. Then she started telling me that I need to unplug the cable going to the modem, because it will start going all by itself. Well, I have a recording (video) of that happening. So I told her "you mean you all know that you have defective modems out there chomping away at people's monthly issue, and you're not DOING anything about it," she hung up on me.
I'll be uploading this to Facebook, within the next day or so, and you be the judge. Not to mention I have two programs on my main server, which is the FCC app, and it'll tell you how much data was sent and received, also, and there is no way they sent all that "high" speed data, they're high! If I could have given it "0" stars I would have. But since "1" star is the lowest, I will have to go with that. I would agree with all the reviews I have read. I have had many of the same issues, and they are multiple. I got the service at the end of Feb 2016. It never worked properly. Specifically, download speeds were extremely slow, upload speeds at 133 kbs were virtually non-existent, and I bought the largest package. Many calls to customer service, with them always trying to save the account by extending my trial period, cutting monthly costs, giving me tokens etc. Finally, in mid-May, I said enough trying to fix things when the "special tech support team" could not help me, again. Called to cancel and was told that the notes in my file said I could not cancel without penalty even if the "special tech support team" was not able to fix the problem. Absolute LIARS!
I would have NEVER agreed to continue to gamble on this system after 2 months of this system not working properly if they had not extended the trial period! Finally cancelled the service, and got a supervisor, after hours of phone tag, to not charge me the $400 early cancel fee. Do not get this product! It functions like the internet back in the 90's.

O MY GOODNESS, Hughesnet is absolutely the worst decision I have ever done in my life. Not only is the service so bad it’s close to dial up, I was told when we signed up that there was no cancellation fee if I tried it for a month. The rep/agent who signed me up told me that I could try it, and I made it a point to ask her, that if it didn’t work for me I wouldn’t be charged the cancellation fee RIGHT? She said yes, this was not the case and I was hit for $200.00 after only 30 days of service. Absolute joke.
In 30 days I called every week because week one, the service was slow, they told me that was as good as it was going to get, WOW, I should have canceled it right there and then. Week 2, a storm hit the area, after the service was out for a week a service person came out and got it back up in running, after that I found out was out of data, $80.00 a month for 55GB and it was on for maybe two weeks, WOW again, this I was told was all my fault and I would need to restrict my usage. I got the system to watch movies on Amazon, and so my kids could use their YouTube, Facebook etc., this is why I got the service and it wasn’t a secret when I talked to the sales rep, she was just out to get my credit card number.
I will be fighting them on the cancellation fee. This is the worst experience I have ever had with an internet provider, they know that when you are living rural they have you by the balls. They just don’t care. Please, please, please don’t ever give this company your money. Their website says #1 choice for internet service, I disagree, worst ever and if you don’t believe me, here is another 1,791 other people that was ripped off. I would give this 0 stars if I could. I had this service for a little over 3 years because I had no other options where I lived. The entire time I had the largest data package available and it still barely worked. You can't stream any video without going over the data limit for the month and sometimes even just going on social media uses it up. The download speed was supposed to be around 15mbps but when I had it tested it was sitting at 0.41mbps and that was before the data ran out.
They have horrible customer service and usually just blow you off when you call them. The entire time I had the service the price slowly went up month by month even though I didn't change anything about my service. And when I moved and cancelled it they told me they'd send a box for all of the equipment but they never sent it. Now I'm supposed to pay for the boxes and shipping for everything.

Do not use this Internet service. One star is too much, would give no stars if I could. The service is incredibly horrible, most of the time it didn't work and when it did, it was beyond slow, and constantly buffering/loading. Added to that, the salespeople are completely fraudulent. They lied about every aspect of the plan to get me to sign up. First they NEVER told me this was a data plan and that if I ran out of data I would need to purchase more at an astronomical expense. I'm sure the reason they don't disclose this is because if they did, no one would sign up. The data they provide is ridiculously low, and we went through it in a couple of days, and that's with terrible, intermittent, pretty much useless Internet.
Second, before I signed I was told I would have 30 days to cancel with no penalty if I wasn't satisfied. I complained daily for the first week and had 2 technicians out here to try to get better service, they were unable to. I called to cancel the service the second week and I was told I would be charged a fee of $400 for early termination, despite the fact that I was within the 30 day period to cancel, they said because I had a couple of days of data streaming that I was locked in. Completely going against their guarantee. Do yourself a favor and run from this company. I have ATT Frontier now and love it. It's less than half the price of this stupid satellite garbage and works very well.

I signed up at $49 per month, and there was an immediate price increase. I get livid when I see their commercials praising themselves. Moving out of area so I called to cancel my Hughes Net internet service. I should have know then it was going to be a nightmare. The customer service agent Paula told me they would mail a box to send back the equipment on the day my service stopped 12/18/15. I asked to have it mailed sooner since I was moving out of the area on 12/19/15. "We can't mail it any sooner. It's mailed when the account is closed." She said I have to get a box and mail equipment back and fax receipts so I can be reimbursed. I asked to scan/email receipts since I don't have a fax machine and she said they don't have an email address to do this. "Really you're an internet company and you don't have an email address." She told me to go to the library and use their fax machine. I wrote down everything she told me to return and repeated it to her. I wrote down everything she said to me. I returned the equipment late December.
Fast forward to Feb 2016 and I see a charge from Hughes Net for $216 for equipment not returned. I called the billing department and he transferred me to customer service and he transferred me to his supervisor Mario. He told me I didn't return all the equipment. "What equipment are you talking about?" He said they received the part of what I should have returned. "I return what I was told to return," I told him. The equipment on the roof wasn't returned. He said when they sent the return equipment box to me it had all the instructions in it. I told him, "I didn't receive the box since they mailed it after I left the area." He told me to go on the roof or get and pay a serviceman to go to the house and take down the equipment and mail it back. I was stunned by this response.
"You expect me to go on the roof and take down equipment. I don't live in the area anymore." We went back and forth. "How can we solve this situation?" I asked. He kept telling me I have to return the equipment. After a good 30 min, I asked to speak to his manager. He said it stops with him and he would escalate this situation and call me back in 2 hours. That was Feb 11, 2016 and I'm still waiting for that call back. Terrible, terrible customer service.

He ran a credit check (without telling me beforehand) in order to see if I qualified for special promotions in our area. He said I was approved for free installation and a $100 gift card I would receive in 2-3 weeks. Never discussed any kind of contract with me EVER. Only said I would be paying $19.95 a month for connection with no buffering or interruptions, as I mentioned I use Netflix & Youtube a lot. After I made a installation appointment, he transfers me to another rep who was trying to convince me to purchase a security system for my home, as it was something I qualified for. I declined many times as he was persistent. After the call ended, I was immediately charged 2 amounts: $48.98 and $24.99.
Confused, I decided to do my own research and came across all the negative reviews online. I thought it was best to cancel asap. Customer service number told me to call 813-643-8853 and ask for Deb to cancel my appointment. Called twice and there was no Deb available both times. I was transferred to another rep for help and he asks for an order number. I told him the Hughesnet rep didn't gave me an order number, just a confirmation code. The confirmation code was no help apparently, transfers me once more. Finally, spoke to a rep who cancelled my appointment. Says there's no fees or charges for the cancellation. Tech guy still shows up, I explain I cancelled my appointment much earlier in the day and will not need his service. He starts complaining under his breath how nobody ever tells him anything. He gives me a number to call to notify Hughesnet about my cancellation.
I call and tell the rep I wanted to cancel my order, she was rather annoying and seemed not to understand I did not want the service. She kept insisting I should take 7 days to think it through before I make a final decision. I said, "No, I'll just cancel now." She said I would be refunded the amounts charged within 24 hrs and no further fees would be charged. She lied. As soon as I hung up the phone, I had 2 more amounts $24.99 and $12.95 charged to my card! I don't understand why if I had not made any contract or had anything installed! Every time I called asking about the charges, I was put on hold or the call would disconnect! I called my bank to report that the company was charging me without my authorization. I changed all my card/account info. Hughesnet are nothing but thieves! STAY AWAY.

I have spent three hours on tech support, was hung up on twice trying to deal with an issue at my lake house, then was told that I would be charged to have a tech come back out. The main reason it took so long is they couldn't understand me nor I them. To top it off I discover yesterday when I watched one movie on Netflix and did a little bit of work on my computer that half of the media usage for the whole month is gone. Their service is terrible, does not work the majority of the time (been told that you basically have to stay up the peak hours 200/300 in the morning). Not able to do that due to fact people have to work and pay their bills. When we moved, the only internet we could get in our area was Hughes Net Satellite. Trust me, I didn't want to, but I needed internet. Let's start with the install. They came, and told me they could not put my satellite on my roof and had to put it in the front yard. I really did not want this but we agreed on a spot in front of a tree so it was slightly hidden from the road. I had to be somewhere so once we agreed on that location, I left. When I came home, the satellite was dead center in the front of my yard! I had to call and have over an hour long conversation in which non-english speaking people continuously refused to come and move it. So finally, I hung up on them and had a few choice words with the installer until he agreed to come move it, and I had to pay him extra.
Now for the money side of things. Once you give them your credit card info, they will charge your card every month, BEFORE they send you the bill AND without permission to use card for future charges! Eventually, I canceled my card so they couldn't do this anymore. So they started the bill to my email on the day that they would normally charge my card. The bill would say due in 5 days (so mind you they give you 5 DAYS to pay your bill instead of like 20 like every other company) but, effective immediately, you cannot use your internet until you pay the bill because all you will get is a pop up saying to pay your bill before your account is delinquent. So, to sum it up, you MUST pay your bill the day they send it to you or you cannot use your internet. AND THEN once you pay it, you still can't use your internet for at least an hour, even though the money comes off your card immediately.
CONCLUSION: This company is a scamming, money-sucking, non-english speaking piece of crap. Their service sucks. Customer service sucks. Installers suck. All together just the absolute worst company I have ever had to deal with. If you have any other option or don't absolutely need some sort of internet... DO NOT GET HUGHES NET. Oh and one last thing, my data usage shot up over one week when I had not used the internet at all and did not have anything hooked up that could be using it. HughesNet is without a doubt the worst company I have ever dealt with when it comes to customer service, and Resolving equipment issues. I have had them less than 9 months and twice I have been down for 2 weeks. This last time their cable literally fried itself. It also burned my dish Network cable as well. Fortunately it didnt burn the house down. I called both companies about the issue 5 minutes apart. Dish Network sent a guy out the very next day to repair their cable that HughesNet caused. HughesNet on the other hand said they will call you from the headquarters office in 3 to 4 business days due to it being a safety issue. Sure enough it took them 4 days to call. Of course I missed the call because I was at work. I call them back and of course they are only open till 4pm eastern time. They left a message with an extension to call but the voice prompt never offered to transfer you.
I called back the next day and finally got through to someone who worked with the guy that was handling my case. He didn't even ask me anything that I thought he would ask me regarding the issue. All he said was "get a quote for the damage to the house and email us the bill". Then he set me up with a guy to come by the next day and make the repair. Next day comes no one shows up. I look at my portal and nothing is showing up for a repair. I call them back - now its been a week. They say "I don't see an appointment for you. I only see that a technician is going to call you to set up an appointment."
So much for the Headquarters office setting up an appointment. After the weekend, now 9 days without internet a tech calls and says he is coming by the next day. He said on the phone that he read the notes and will repair the system the next day. Next day comes and he shows up without any coax cable. That is what was fried in the first place! REALLY, read the notes. So he says "someone else will call you to set up an appointment". I cant make this crap up! Next day the same guy calls and says he will be the one to come fix it due to it being a safety issue. No kidding, that is what the headquarters office said. So, eventually they come and make the repair on the 15th day. He did try and come the day prior but Houston was flooded. That I understood. 2 WEEKS later. Finally back up.
Other issue: When I first got HughesNet I had the next speed down from gamer speed. I could watch movies, etc. I was happy with it. Later on I called and said that I cant even get a 2 minute YouTube video to play. They gave me a bunch of garbage feedback. They said "we will give you the next speed up which was gamer speed for 3 months free". Well I will say I can watch 2 minute videos now. But I still cant play a movie unless its at 2-5 in the morning. Just like my neighbor told me after I had already got HughesNet. When my contract is up I'm done with them! NEVER AGAIN!

This company seems to be one big scam. While I don’t have their TV service, I do have their internet and home phone service. The bottom line is their service just doesn’t even begin to work right. Nor are they willing to rectify any of the problems. There’s even various websites where people have posted complaints about every aspect of their service. So if you currently have or have had in the past their satellite service, any or all of their services for TV, internet and home phone, and have had the many problems that hundreds and hundreds of people have had nationwide, it is time to put a stop to their scam and make them give people the service they advertise and have been paying for. Unless you have no alternative, stay away. It's biggest monthly package at 50GB really doesn't allow video streaming, game playing, security alarms or most of the things offered on modern internet. My Hughes.net system is at a rural home and I can't work from there because of limitations of data and speed I've probably spent over 12 hours on endless phone calls with agents who tend to try to blame you when real problem is the systems' limitations. They are very accusatory blaming me for using up monthly data when I discover my service has been cut off. And that has happened in months I've spent 4 to 5 days at the home, using two laptops which are powered off when I'm not there.
Last January, they insisted I hire a computer consulting firm to remotely test my computers. The cost? About $150. Results? They said it was Hughes.net's fault. I wasn't using up all the data Hughes.net said I was. What company needs to catch up to modern age is a monthly unlimited data plan. Until then, it will keep you in the internet dark ages.

We have a vacation home in the mountains and there is no other options for internet available, so I signed up with Hughesnet. First off, I don't feel the representative I spoke with was entirely honest and mislead what I would be getting. We stream TV through Netflix which was a specific question I had. I was told, that unless I played video games, which I do not, that I would have no problems streaming with the package we discussed which allowed for 10,000 points a month, PLUS 5,000 bonus points. Well, one program uses up about 1,000 points, so that means about 10 shows a month - not exactly what I was lead to believe. The bonus points are only available during times when most people sleep - around midnight until 7:00 am. Again not what I was lead to believe.
The internet service is fine. I have a laptop and two cell phones and have no complaints in that area but I am very disappointed by what I was told to be available for streaming and what I actually got. Also, since it's pretty expensive we have started to put the service on vacation mode but again, they continue to charge you a monthly fee for the equipment rental. All in all, it's better than nothing but barely. My main complaint is not being told the truth.

If they had been a responsible company, I would have them right now and going through all the ** some of you are going through. At first I was constantly calling them trying to find out WTF is going on. After I read the reviews, I stopped and a week later, they're calling me. LOL. Glad they didn't show. What a poor excuse for a company. Sounds like they are doing criminal activities with telling people they have to climb roofs to get their equipment when they put it up there. That's just a way for them to prolong your having their stuff so they can continue to bill you. SMH.

Signed up for Hughes Net a few months ago. Was told it was very fast with no data caps. They took my money very quickly. On the fourth day I checked my account. I had used up 60% of a NO DATA CAP service. A blatant lie (1). Speed was very slow - lie #2. Canceled on day 4 during a very frustrating phone merry-go-round. Was told my service was canceled and I would receive a refund (lie #3). Had to cancel my card so they couldn't get to it (they TRIED!). Talked to a Candice in India. She told me they would refund $89.93 IF I would send back the main piece on the dish (CON# 53025307). I did (silly me).
2 weeks later (today at 10:30 AM April 8 2016) I called to have my refund check sent. I was told I still owe them money and it would balance out! LIES, LIES AND MORE LIES. Once they have your money they won't give it back, but they will sure promise you that they will. I have never had dealings with such a deceitful, lying, money grabbing company. Because of my income, I had to borrow the money to sign up for this scam and now have to pay it back. STAY AWAY FROM HUGHES-NET!

I am qualified to comment about Hughesnet internet service. I have been a "customer" since they took over Direcway. To be fair, I must first address the positives: It (Gen4) is faster than dial up. The English skills of the first level-tech support (apparently in Indonesia) are better than the previous tech support group in India. That's about it. And now the negatives. I will only describe the worst and most recent, as there have literally been over 100 problems since I've been a customer. I have a file folder in my office cabinet that has notes from every service call I have made to Hughesnet. Each call has one page of notes and the file is almost four inches thick.
The modem is junk. I have Gen4 (the most expensive and supposedly best service). The modem crashes on a daily basis, sometimes more than once. The tech solution is to unplug it and wait for it to reboot, which takes five minutes at a minimum. The email program is terrible. It takes forever to "log in". About 20% of the time it won't open at all and I have to click a prompt that opens the email page in a format with fewer functions. The email program has current issues if you are using Internet Explorer as your browser. Mozilla Firefox has fewer problems and Chrome seems to have the least...for now.
The issue I am the most furious about is the suspicious download usage. About a year ago I had serious problems with my internet connection. I called Hughesnet and they told me they were upgrading their service and I needed to authorize that. At that point I had been allotted 20 daytime gigabytes and 20 nighttime gigabytes per month. With that allotment I rarely exceeded their Fair Access Policy (FAP). They proceeded to tell me that the 20/20 GB package was no longer offered and the best they could offer was 15 GB per month which would be debited between 8:00 am and 2:00 am and nighttime allowance was now 50 GB per month, but only available between 2:00 am and 8:00 am. I objected and pointed out that I did not call to change my service plan. I called to have them resolve the internet connection problems I was experiencing with my current service. They said I could not keep my existing plan.
Now the big problem started. I assumed I could easily get by with the 15 daytime gigabytes, as I almost never approached the previous 20 GB daytime limit. Halfway through the first month of the new service plan I exceeded my 15 GB daytime FAP limit! It has been that way ever since. Of course Hughesnet is happy to sell you extra bandwidth at $16.00 for 2 GB. It appears that merely opening a static web page drains huge amounts of bandwidth. I am convinced this did not occur with my previous Hughesnet service plan.
The bottom line is that satellite internet providers act as if they are a monopoly. They know that you are using them because other competitive forms of service such as DSL are not available in some rural areas. Consequently, they can gouge their customers and provide horrible service because they are the only option other than dial-up. I hate Hughesnet.

The president of the company is the one that did the installation. All of the wiring was placed on my deck which is my entertainment area facing the street. I had 2 coils of wire hanging on my deck tied together with zip ties. I complained about how it looked and he said that's the way it has to be. I also asked him to make the router on my DirecTV to recognize the router that he installed and he told me that wasn't his job. I had to pay the first month one week before the installation was done. I thought I was upgrading from Verizon because I didn't have enough Mbps to stream.
When DirecTV could not communicate with USENET I complained. I also complained because of the way the installation looked from the street. I made four phone calls complaining about these two issues and they kept telling me, "Give me 48 hours and we will fix it." That never happened on my fifth call. I spoke to a supervisor and I said, "I want it removed." It would cost me $100 to have that happen.
Updated on 04/28/2016: This is a follow-up from my original complaint of April 6, 2016. I just found out that they accessed my bank account illegally, without my permission, and charged $115.50 to my bank account. To an potential customers of Hughes Net... I was promised a certain level of service when I signed up for their 2 yr contract. As soon as everything was up and running my internet was so slow it was pretty much unusable. I called multiple times complaining and nothing could ever be done to improve my services but they still wanted their money every month. Finally I talked to someone that told me after a yr I could cancel so I had them lower my bill to the lowest possible payments so that I could just hang in there a few more months and be done with them.
After the yr was up I called to cancel and of course that was a lie too. They said I have to pay for 2 yrs. I explained to them I paying for nothing but they don't care. They are all about words on paper not the services they promise. From day 1 I was sick about what I had been tricked into. So much money just thrown in the trash. When I moved I still had 10 months left on my contract. Of course you have early termination fee but they also wanted me to climb on the roof and get the radio receiver and ship back to them or pay $300 plus the early termination fees. I am a 61-year old single female, and they want me to climb a ladder to the top of the house!!! What if I fall? None of this was told to me when I signed up. These people goes into my account, gets the money and I just had authorized them not to and calls them to let them know why did they do that and I need my money back to pay for other bills.
Call my bank to let them know what was going on. The bank told me that they can stop payment if only they fax them, letting them know to stop payment. HughesNet customer service rep kept telling my husband that they don't have a fax. I know that that was a lie. These thieves wanted to get our money, extra money that I had to spend for my 3 kids with. Stayed on the phone with these lames for over 2 hours with all types of LIES. I do not recommend this service to anyone till they fix some major issues. 1st customer service, for which there is very little to say the least. Mostly non english speaking techs from what sounds like India. 2nd, their internet service in whole. We've had their service for the past 5 years. Only other choice is dial-up. Was great for the first month when installed. Since then it has fallen to a very low satisfaction level. Slow speeds, no downloading anything but static web pages here. Many complaints issued but no satisfaction. They did replace a faulty modem but service is still slow and not real reliable. Complained about them to the BBB... Better Business Bureau. Nothing accomplished that route either. Was told to upgrade my service to see improvements.
Here's why I won't do that. Current service has 15 gigs of data per month, daily refill of 250 megs, and builds to 500 megs per day if saved up. Cost about 50 per month. Gen4 has 10 gigs per month data and no daily refill. If used up either restricted speed till 1st of month or buy 5.00 tokens. Cost 68.00 per month. Current account gets between 50 kbps to 120 kbps on a good day. Gen4 stated basic service 1 to 3 megs per sec. Here's the Kicker... Hughes Net terms of service does not guarantee service speeds, connectivity etc.. So why should I pay more each month for non-guaranteed service? I will remain a dissatisfied customer till another company offers me service in my area. If thinking of a BBB complaint... kinda a waste of time. Their terms of service wording is what they hide behind and keeps them from having to fix any of these issues. I do not recommend Hughes Net Satellite Internet for these reasons.

My mother in law called them to complain about the service and they sent a technician out and he replaced the dish and the modem which meant that he automatically renewed her contract. We did not think it was possible but her service got WORSE. She just dealt with it as she wanted to get out of the contract and find a different option.
This last weekend I was so fed up that I called Hughes Net to complain and told them to cancel service, that my mother in law would not be paying a cancellation fee or penalty as she has not been able to get on the internet for almost a year and a half but yet she still pays her bill on time EVERY month. During the canceling process we found out that the service tech that came out a year and a half prior upgraded her to GEN4 and that service is not even available in the area my mother in law lives in so that is why she has not had service.
The sales guy tried to get her to reconsider with a nice offer but my mother in law declined. Hughes Net said they would send a box out so my mother in law could return the equipment they wanted returned. We SPECIFICALLY asked if they needed anything off of the roof where the dish is and we were told "NO". We asked this as my mother in law and father in law are in their 70's. My mother in law called me today and lo and behold they need a part off of the roof or if it is not returned it is a $200 fee. So another LIE from Hughes Net. I will report them to the BBB. I can honestly say that I have had dial up service that was faster. They claim that 10mb is more than enough to stream movies, music, whatever your heart desires. Yeah, for the first month, that might be true, but not the second month or any months after. We have given up even trying to watch YouTube videos, forget Netflix or Amazon Video. They advertise the service at amounts of data per month when every other ISP brags about how fast they are. We had to go with satellite because no other companies have service up where we are yet, so we are stuck with them until August or until another ISP is available, or we move.
Living in the country is great until you need technology. Several times this winter we've had to go knock the ice off of the dish so our phone/internet will work. I like to work from home, but I can't right now because no companies allow satellite internet service. Guess why? It's too slow and not secure enough. I would not recommend Hughes NOT to anyone. In December I noticed that Hughes was still billing me for monthly services even though I had never been able to establish an internet connection. My bank reversed the monthly charges. I was told that I could stream movies and that I had 30 days to cancel the service if I did not like it. The service was fine for 30 days. Then suddenly, I was out of data. I called the company and they asked me try using a more expensive package and said they would extend my trial period. I did as they requested and I quit streaming Netflix, or anything else. Now, I was aware I could use their meter to watch how much data was depleting.
Again I contacted them requesting to cancel because the service still was not providing enough data to last from month to month and when it is used up the service is slowed to such a point it becomes almost useless. Then they asked me to try using a internet program called download manager and use free data hours from 2 am to 8 am. I was never able to figure out how to use that program so I called Hughes Network again requesting to cancel and was this time I was told if I did they would charge me a $300 cancellation fee. It took 3 weeks to get the installer to call me after the order was placed. Then the installer was extremely rude and hateful both on the phone and in person. That should have been a red flag to back out. Then the service is too slow and isn't compatible with VPN, though I was told it was. I cancelled the residential account and they tried to charge me $400. I am not ashamed of my behavior because I did NOT pay that.
However, 2 months after the equipment was returned, they drafted $213.50 without my knowledge or approval. When I called the reason I was given was we didn't return the radio from the satellite. No one told us that needed to be returned. They assured me the money would be refunded once they received the radio. Extremely unprofessional company, a bunch of crooks running a scam and the internet is the worst. I would give them negative stars if allowed to do so. Do not do business with them. You will pay for crappy to non existent service and it's a huge hassle every time you call for help. Then they will try to get you to buy "tokens" for more data. I now pay for Verizon, which is expensive, but they are a reputable company, the service is great, and I know where my data is used.

2/28 I started the process of signing up with Hughes Net - 2 hours later very flustered. Their customer service does not tell you everything you need to know. I ask for my same phone number - was not told it would take 10 days for the transition to take place - when then installed finished I was told "here is your new phone number." The phone service is not consistent - cannot always hear incoming calls and I have to call back. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HUGHES NET to my worst enemy.

I should say I’m not one of them people who normally take time out of his day to write reviews but this was so bad I had to do it. Even if it saves one person who will read this and not get their services it will be money well saved. Although it’s too late for me. Hughes Net is the worst decision I have made in the last 5 years of my life. I originally was attracted to the Hughes Net because it was tied together in a Bundle deal with My DirecTV. I had used DirecTV and was very satisfied. So I thought why not get the Bundle deal with the internet included and just have one bill. I was tricked. It never was one bill even though I was told on the phone beforehand that it would be one bill.
I got over that, the service was super slow. When I called and complained I was introduced to their token scam! Basically that you have to pay more money to get some kind of tokens that last a certain amount of time that expire and have you calling back again in the next hour. Bottom line more money. I’m not cheap so I said "give me the best internet with the highest speed you offer." IT was still slow when everybody was home using the net.
Finally I was fed up, I said "come get this stuff out my house and I want to cancel my service." They told me that would be a 200.00 charge. I told them "I don’t have 200 so suspend my account." They hit me with a 24$ every month, my account was suspend and I wasn’t even using their services. I would have been better off cutting my loss and paying the 200. Please if you ever need internet do not use HUGHES NET - worst ever. I now have Time Warner, it’s like night and day. Super fast watching movies, downloading, playing games, doing school work.

This company does not even deserve a star! Their internet is way below any standards. They claim to be "fast" but they are not! It doesn't matter where you live, you can't download any movie, video, or barely surf Facebook if ANY other electronics are on in your home. I was locked into a 2 year contract with them and couldn't WAIT to get rid of them! When I tried to cancel my contract when it was over, they tried to offer discounts and rebates for more services. Why would I WANT service regardless what I pay if it doesn't work?!? They even tried to charge my account without my knowledge for another month claiming I was "month to month" even though I already called a month in advance to cancel. Their excuse? "You called to verify the end date of your contract. You didn't cancel." What part of "I don't want your service or renew my contract" do you not understand???
Very disrespectful to customers and they never believe what the customer says. I'm always having to defend myself for anything I need. My service isn't downloading as easily as you advertised, "You've maxed your downloading limit." How can I max it if I can't download anything??? It's always the customer's fault that their internet isn't up to par. It's always the customer's fault that their service sucks. It's always the customer's fault if their contract isn't cancelled properly. YOU DIDN'T DO YOUR JOB!!! Quit blaming the customer and actually practice some customer service and you might actually have some customers!!!

So Directway came back and fixed everything but by then my trial period for Hughes was up. It was so slow had I been able to try service I would not of kept it. I used all the data in a few days. I now go to the library and do what I need to do on the internet. This service is absolutely the most horrible there is.
I have a rent house and I am going to see if I can move the service to there. If can't I will pay the $400 early disconnect fee. Not only that I bought a $2000 smart tv and I was told it would work with Hughes connection. It doesn't. I called Directway and they said no Directway tv won't work with Hughes, it's too slow. It was not Hughes fault that Directway cut the line but I should of had my trial period extended. I finally bought a jet pack from Verizon and at least I can use the Internet on my tablet. Avoid this company. They will not work with the customer. I wish I had read reviews before I got their service. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!! 1 star is too good for this.

Hughesnet has a scam going that has to be addressed. My account refilled with 20 gigs of data on the 7th. Today is the 11th and I'm at zero. It showed my data being used when I was asleep!!! They are data draining my account in hopes of me buying their data tokens @ $16 for two gigs!!! They do this to create a different revenue stream. This is the worst company ever. They have customer service reps that speak english when you sign up but when you have a problem all you get is customer service reps that can barely speak English and make go through these stupid steps that do nothing. They frustrate you until you just give up and go away.
It's so frustrating to use the Internet and pay faithfully keeping our side of the deal and have Hughesnet do this garbage!!! Think about how much data we'd have to use to burn off 20 gigs of data in 4 days?!?!? It's ridiculous and criminal. And I know we're not the only ones this is happening to and I think a class action lawsuit is needed to stop Hughesnet from doing this to their customers. I'd love to put them out of business and make an example of them. I don't know how to bring a class action suit but it needs to be done. It makes me sick every time I see their commercial because I know it's a bait and switch situation. Please help us hold Hughesnet's feet to the fire.

Had Hughes Net installed while living out in the Nevada desert. The tech came and installed the dish. Weeks after the install, I noticed that he had put a 4 inch lag bolt through my wall and into my inside window sill. This caused my sill to be pushed out from the wall about 2 inches due to it being aluminum. I had not noticed it due to the fact that it was behind the curtain. It wasn't until the weather got cold, I noticed a breeze coming in. That's how I discovered the shoddy install work.
A few months later, I had an emergency and had to pull up stakes and move back to Vermont. I had asked the tech during install what I would need to bring with me in case I moved. He said just bring the modem and router. Which I did when we moved. Upon getting to Vermont, I looked into having the dish hooked back up. One of my neighbors informed me that dish service does not work in our neighborhood due to the fact that we live in a dense oak forest. Too many trees obstructing the signal.
I then called the local cable service and had them install the local cable. I then called Hughes Net to cancel my service. The rep asked why I was cancelling and I informed her of my situation. She then says that they offer up a Gen 4 service plan (Apparently the oak tree issue didn't register). I then told her I already had a local cable service installed and I said that I believe Hughes Net isn't available in my area anyway. I have lived in Vermont all my life and have NEVER seen a Hughes Net van. She claimed that service was in fact available in my area. I informed her that I would like to cancel. She then tells me that I will have to mail back the modem, router, wires, and a radio transmitter which is on the dish! I said I had left the dish in Nevada for the new homeowner. She then informed me that it would be a $200 fee for the transmitter PLUS a $250 cancellation fee!
In essence, I have to pay $450 to cancel a service that is useless to me. I am sure this will snowball into more money before it's over. I am sure that I will have to put a block on my bank account to stop them from helping themselves to my money. I have read other reviews, and there are many that say the service is slow and almost useless. Has anyone ever asked themselves how such a low service company could afford to launch a satellite up into space for the tune of like 300 million dollars or whatever the price tag is? Then to offer slow internet and most people losing service on a continual basis?! I think this whole "satellite service" is a sham! I would bet that there is NO satellite. I would say that it's all ground based systems and the American consumer is getting ripped off to the tune of BILLIONS!

The tech asked how the weather was here and I said, "Fine, sunny skies, no wind, no rain, no clouds." He asked for my phone # in case we got disconnected and I gave it to him. He wanted me to take the cable from the modem and hook it directly to my laptop, and asked me if it was any faster. I said no but even if it was I couldn't leave my laptop hooked to the router all the time. I lost the call and he never did call back. I work from home and I can't do what I need to do. When I called the 2nd time regarding the modem box, the rep informed me they needed the radio returned or charged $200 for it. After complaining we were not told that or we would have, they sent out a tech--which was a third party from another state!! After again complaining and threatening 'further action' on our part, they waived the 'all of a sudden' $100 radio fee to send a tech out.
Again contacting them, they insisted they needed the radio, there would be a fee to send another tech out--BUT THEY SENT THE WRONG 3rd party company to pick it up in the first place! After the rep explained 3 times I asked for the supervisor. The supervisor resolved the issue to our satisfaction. We kept losing connection constantly. Had to use WiFi on phone because we could not play games on FB. We could not stream movies on Netflix.
I would have given them 1 star except for the fact they resolved the radio issue, which I gave them 1 star for. I don't know why there hasn't been a class action suit against them because of their shoddy business practices, unusable internet service AND false advertising, specifically their most recent commercial indicating they are "#1 internet service in the country." HUH? Maybe in 1 square mile in bum-blank Egypt.

My husband chose HughesNet before I moved in with him and didn't research, as I would have done. While there was no other choice in companies (rural area), it seems H.N. knows this and therefore takes advantage of U.S. citizens. Where do I begin? Speed was unbelievably slow, i.e. Netflix would upload longer than an hour; couldn't watch a movie a complete hour before streaming froze. We moved out of state 9 months into our 2-year contract (really?! Another trap). We had to pay the remaining months of the contract with NO exceptions.
So, we were told to bring internet modem with us and return when we cancelled service. We did and now they're saying they need the 'box' attached to the mobile home itself. This cannot be done because it is private property. And because of that we're required to pay another $200!! We were not told that before we moved or we would have brought it with us. And their TV ad that they're the #1 internet service in America? **. IF ANYONE IS OR KNOWS A LAWYER THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING and clearly can and should be sued, not to mention the way their service is NOT sufficient and their gouging practices. Stay clear of this company!!

They could not answer me when I asked why, when they received the returned items, and saw something was missing, it took them 9 months to let me know about it. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was given the runaround and never got to. I was very happy with their service when I was using this, but this is ridiculous. Having to tell guests to be careful--and not watch youtube on their phones, having to schedule necessary computer updates in the middle of the night, etc, etc. only to see your gigs just disappear when you're not even home. The worse part was Customer Service going thru the same old story when you called to complain. It is always the customer's fault; never theirs.
Last month had a guy come out and say that my dish got turned because of the wind so it was zapping the gigs. This was the last straw; called all my neighbors and finally got RanchWireless - a line of site company---so faster, and they are offering 150 gigs for $90.00. Hmmm. Installation is somewhat expensive; but to not have worry is amazing. The last insult is when you call to cancel and they take your whole month of payment and offer no reimbursement even though I only used it a week and are charging me over $200 over getting out of the contract early. I have been a Hughesnet customer for well over 10 years. Up until last November I was basically satisfied with the service especially when you factor in that I had no access to broadband internet services. It irks me that the country that invented the Internet is not even in the top 25 countries in providing broadband access to the citizens who paid for the invention.
Beginning in November and continuing to this day I have repeatedly been told I have exceeded the Hughesnet fair use policy and as such my Internet speeds have been throttled. I have tried everything from upgrading to their best Gen4 modem, buying tokens and even changing to the Pro Level Service plans that took my month charge from $67.00 a month to $90.00 a month. Still ** service. I even try to get up early and stay up late to supposedly access the internet without being throttled. NOTHING seems to work. I am at my wits end and currently am aggressively looking to change ISP.
Unfortunately alternative ISPs in my area are thin even after 10 years. I would give anything to pull the cable, the dish and the modem and pile it in the front yard and tell these morons to come and get their crap. Under no condition would I recommend Hughesnet. They need to be barred from doing business in this country. I wish someone would start a class action lawsuit. I would be the first to sign up. So in conclusion after spending over $10,000.00 with these clowns and being a loyal on-time paying customer I get treated like some scumbag bum. If a lawyer reads this please file a class action lawsuit on our behalf. This is a bait and switch company that charges for services not rendered. PERIOD. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DISGUSTING COMPANY AND THEIR OUTRAGEOUS SERVICE.

I just got HughesNet and I am greatly disappointed how slow it is. The tech support people are nice, but so far they have not been able to help. It is much, much slower than the free wifi at hotels or coffee shops. It is not at all what I expected.

Worst customer service ever! Had to pay a third party to come take a look at the internet. Why it was so slow? They said it was fine and very fast internet after hooking it up to a computer but never did anything else. Couldn't load snap chats, Facebook pictures and content took forever to load so forget about looking at Instagram or watching Netflix. Will never recommend them to anyone, even my worst enemy.

If there was a way to give a negative star rating I would! This company is unreliable, places false charges on the account and then refuses to refund your money even after you provide them with a tracking number proving that the package with the returned equipment was returned. Their agents have no idea what they are doing. They talk over you when you are trying to explain why you called and they repeat the same thing over and over because they don't know enough English to say anything other than the script put in front of them. Do not used this company under any circumstances!!!

I was told on the phone that they could provide me a minimum of 5gbps. I said OK so they signed me up for installation, to be done 2 days later. The guys installed everything and told me to wait 24 hours for things to calibrate and it would then get faster. Well I waited the 24 hours and it didn't improve. I call the tech support and find out the connection should have been instant NOT after 24 hours.
I was then told they would not bill me anything that I was still in my trial period, now extended from that conversation and to please use the weekend to try to use it and see if there was improvement and after thinking maybe we got the problem solved I went back online and it was still terrible. In fact our internet through the phone line was much faster and we went back to using that the rest of the weekend. The average they could give me was 2gbps after numerous speed tests. I call on Tuesday and after they were certain I did not want this service, was I then made aware that they had charged my card twice! I demanded refund which they refused. They are nothing but scam artists and if you do not follow up and fight it, they will get away with it again and again!

I got Hughes internet few months ago. First 2 weeks it started not working good. All they did was pacify me tell I got stuck in contract. I had to pay 280.00 to get out. Please when you have problems at first get out of it before you're stuck and have to pay.

Stay away from this company, service is the worse. It's the slowest internet I've ever had the displeasure of having. Plus salesperson lied and said contract was only for one year but when we tried to cancel after one year they said, "No, it's two years."

I have just completed my third call to Hughes that I canceled my service the end of December 2015. At that time I was told that I would be getting a refund because I canceled my service the same day that they took a payment out of my account. I received a phone call from them on January 19, 2016 stating that I owe them $62. I called them, reviewed the conversation from December 30 and was told that it would be handled. I have just completed my third call with HughesNet and now they are telling me that the $62 is an early termination fee. I would advise anyone wanting to do business with HughesNet Be careful. We cancelled because of poor quality and slow internet speed. And I signed up for the fastest internet possible.

We have Hughes Net installed because of the limited access to the internet in our area. After installing Hughes Net at the Professional package we found we were at a limit of internet service. I believe it is at 21 G. After you use that up then you must pay to get more data. During the time of service the service is in and out. I know that AT&T has purchased this company but service has not gotten any better. It flat is terrible. I would not recommend this service to anyone.

Speed is 1980s dial-up, you can watch Netflix ONLY if you set the rate at the lowest setting which is NOT the reason you got Netflix! Once you realize how poor the service is, it will cost you $150 for a service tech so you better be able to do your own troubleshooting. And when you decide to tell them you aren't getting what you pay for at $78 a month! They will charge you $300 to remove their equipment. And all month long you will track every minute you are online because 50 gig nowadays is nothing.

My 2-year contract with HughesNet ends this coming May, 2016 and this service will be gone, for me. What a bad joke of a company. They (tech dept.) wants money to fix their problem. Slow isn't really a good word for this so-called internet service. They say it's my computer. BS! I bought a extra booster...still slow. They say there are too many computers running in my area... I live in a small town of 857 people...BS! Smoke signals would be faster than this service. WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT BUY INTO THIS SERVICE!!! I'm going back to my old cable service company. It's about the same price, but much, much faster and no contracts.
