When I ordered and had Hughesnet (HN) installed, I was told that the Live Streaming we had (Sling) would work fine. It did not. It was buffering and rebooting so much we could not watch one program. I called HN two times and talked to technical support. They tried to fix it and it got a little better, then returned to the former state.
The internet and wifi speeds are horribly slow but functional but the advertisements upon which I relied said it was fast internet speeds. I finally called to complain about the misrepresentation and the account manager kept telling me she understands, but refused to waive the early termination fees. I finally went through AT&T/DirecTV for my TV and they have been wonderful...and no contract. Since I can't get internet through them in my area, I am stuck with Hughesnet for the remainder of 2 years. I am telling everyone I know to stay far, far away from Hughesnet because they are a rip-off. I am sure they will not stay in business. Their reputation precedes already and word is getting around.

He told me that the only thing I needed was a monitor and he lead me to believe I was going to get a phone also. Of course this didn't happen.
The installer informed me of what I needed, a computer and a phone. He installed the service anyway. The other thing I'm dissatisfied with is the location of the dish. Less than 12 feet from the back door of my home. Now when I look out the back door all I see is big round dish that is very annoying. The cable from the dish to my house is only half buried. I had to move it each time I try to mow the lawn. My TV streaming is a big joke. The only station that doesn't give buffering p

Install guys were great, as far as the reception and speed it’s mediocre at best. I guess it’s the best they can do via satellite. Images when watching movies goes in and out even on clear days. When I used my iPhone hotspot it was quicker.
Reviewed April 15, 2019
I was excited about the prospect of reliable satellite internet. I am on a street with no hard wired internet and it seemed like the best choice. Some things that made me furious is going thru all my data in 3 days and then being told I should unplug my TV when not using it to avoid a possible software update on the smart TV during the day.
My wife and I are not hardcore streamers. We watch TV at night and surf the internet during the day and the data we blow thru is mind boggling. The result of a tiny data flow to "hold us over" for the other 27 days of the month is unacceptable. We sit and watch TV for 27 days with the signal constantly buffering and us turning off our streaming signal to watch thru an antenna. THE ONLY WAY that this service can be acceptable to anyone is to provide unlimited data to their customers so they don't have to go thru what me and my wife go thru and even with the unlimited data you can expect buffering.
During my last call to customer service I was asked about the weather here and the same questions over and over and I had to hang up because I was not interested in being on the phone for another 30 minutes after waiting for 5 minutes listening to elevator music as my TV was buffering the whole time. I am disgusted with the performance of this service.

For the past year or so, I haven't had any complaints about HughesNet. I've been able to stream Netflix and Amazon without the "hard throttle" effect after exceeding my data limits. Apparently, someone there has decided to go back to the dark ages and treat everyone like they're the only game in town, by enforcing hard throttling of data. HughesNet is the worst business I have ever worked at. They have just charged me a disabled Iraq Veteran without my knowledge $325 on a Sunday morning. I’m a disabled veteran who is not physically able to get up and return their equipment when I canceled because I couldn’t even watch Netflix. So now I work with other veterans with mental health issues and I am unable to get to work tomorrow because I am now in a negative. So instead of returning the money and sending out a technician or allowing me extra time to get them their piece of equipment I can now not go to work. I have already started contacting multiple media outlets because I live outside New York City and I will go to hell and back to make sure that this company is recognized for the damage that they did.

I'm expecting you to reduce my monthly charges for that of SLOW speed because I'm certainly not getting high speed. I haven't called because I'm too disappointed and upset. Please take the initiative to reduce my charges so I don't have to call you, the BBB and other monitoring organizations. Thank you in advance for doing the right thing. Get this... I go to send this and a screen boots up saying "Connection lost" so how is that for internet service? I made a big mistake.

Meanwhile we have no internet service as I cancelled other provider right before the 1st. appt. We reschedule again & he shows up. Says he can't do anything because of brick & steel & had no clue that it had already been discussed where dish was to go in yard! Hopefully it gets better from here, but VERY bad 1st impression! I was so excited to find an internet service that could service my rural home. With boast of download speeds of 30 Mpbs I should have known it was too good to be true. I was SO looking forward to high speed internet. Well, they delivered on that front. Download speeds are high but what they don't advertise is that the ping speed will be 650 to 690. I have terrible lag time causing me to have no quicker internet speed than what a person would have with dial up. Even to log into my HughesNet online account it took over 40 seconds to connect!
When I called to question why I have such slow internet they were quick to say that my download speed test are right in line what they advertise and that they never advertised I'd have quick internet and that's what you get when you have satellite. I felt very misled. Another huge disappointment was the installer put the dish on the wrong side of the house. A couple hour install took 5 hours. Now we have 3 extra holes in our roof with the boots stuck to there until the next time we reroof our house. I was told we'd receive a call from HughesNet to discuss compensation. I have yet to hear from them. We are also waiting for our $100 gift card for the signup promo bonus. I'm not holding my breath we'll receive that either. Just not a good experience all around. I had such high hopes so the disappointment is heightened.

I called on Monday and the person that I talked to said that my account didn't show anything scheduled. I got nowhere with this guy so I asked to talk to his supervisor. This guy apparently read from the same script, he said that I don't have a problem and that maybe I need to shut down some of the stuff that I have connected to the wifi so it would speed up others, well then why did I switch to a more expensive and advanced system? Internet installation. The technician that came out was friendly and helpful but might need a review on how to properly interact with customers and being professional. Also, the time in which it took - which I was told wouldn’t be more than a couple of hours - ended up taking two days. One reason being is because the technician didn’t want to stop at a hardware store en route to pick up a metal pole. Rather they wanted to mount it to the back deck. Keep in mind this took forever. I already explained to him that my wife and I would be needing to leave at 1 (we left closer to 2:00-2:30) to run errands. He was suppose to arrive at either 10:00 but I’ll say 11:00 for the sake of argument. They showed up closer to 12:00 and mentioned they had been up all night working previously and was on about 30 minutes of sleep - again professionalism and interactions with customers. I get being friendly, but that right there gave me a warning sign.
In any case, my wife and I left after getting confirmation from the technician that everything they needed to complete the job was on the outside and he wouldn’t need to get back in the house. Roughly two hours later I get a phone call from him saying it was a bad modem and asked if there was any way he could get in the house. I told him no, everything is locked up. He even has the audacity to ask these two questions. 1) Are the windows locked? And 2) Do you not want me in your house? I was kind of taken back by that question and decided to be professional myself and not say anything regarding that. My honest answer is no I don’t want a stranger who I’m on a first name basis with who I know nothing about, walking around in my house while I’m not there. He also told me that he had another job to do (why would you tell a customer that?) and would leave and come back.
Well when we returned, he wasn’t there. He did return but by the time he “finished” it was close to or after 9:00 pm. He said he would have to come back the next day and put a metal pole in the ground. Him and another guy showed up the next day and had everything done in a little over an hour. I will say though I haven’t really noticed a difference in the speed or connection of the internet or service. He also told me that I have a 30 day trial - if you will - testing out the service and if I didn’t like it that I could return it and not be charged... I’ll be in touch within the next couple of weeks.

I have had service with HughesNet for almost a year now. I subscribed to the 10 Gb/Mo plan as I travel a lot and only need internet a for a couple days out of the month. I have to say that I am immensely dissatisfied with the quality of the internet. I pay over $50/mo once taxes etc are added and have NEVER gotten anywhere near the 25 Mbs down that they advertise. In fact, all the speed tests that I have done (and many have failed due to latency timing out) have returned between 0.8 Mbs down and 5 Mbs down on a REALLY good day. The majority of what I use the service for (or try to use the service for) is to simply stream radio broadcasts.
Quite possibly one of the least intensive tasks you can ask of your ISP and even then, I may get 5-15 min on un-interrupted listening before it drops the stream and I have to go force reload my player. And, just to cover my bases, this is under ideal conditions. Clear blue skies with not a single cloud in sight. If weather is present, it's not even worth trying I find. Rest assured I will be going out of my way to not subscribe in the future. In summary, it's one thing of offer a poor quality product, it's another entirely to advertise something good and then follow through with something that barely qualifies as usable.

He waited until I was up and online, checked a few websites and e-mail, everything was fine. I'm very pleased, so far, with the availability and speed. I do not download large files, movies, videos or music so the 30Gig package I have will suit me just fine. One more thing, I live in an off-grid community. Everything is powered by solar, wind and batteries. The Gen5 modem draws about .5Amps less than the G2 modem I had. It may not sound like much but every little bit counts. :-)

This company is based completely on lies and false advertising. I've had a terrible experience with them in every aspect. I would not recommend them to anyone, EVER!!! We signed a 2 yr. contract with them and bought our equipment outright and was guaranteed a price lock of 80$ for the entire time. That lasted about 6 months. Not to mention the guy that installed the satellite and modem wasn't supposed to put the wire up the side of my house. Well he did exactly that. And not in a discreet corner, not right up the side towards my front door.
I have called probably 200 times over the 2 years to complain and never gotten anywhere with the customer service. 9 times out of ten I was hung up on. They overcharged me for 9 months of service also. Instead of 80$ it was 101.00$. Which may not be a lot to someone but it is to me. And when I've called and complained they pretty much tell me I'm beat. Today the lady actually tried to tell me that im paying for equipment and when I said that's not right I paid outright she told me I was lying basically. When it rains our the weather is bad our service is awful. Even if it's nice here if there's a storm anywhere between where we are getting our internet from at that point, you can forget it. I've talked to manager after manager allegedly, and gotten nowhere. I would definitely shop somewhere else.

They offer your first move is free... After that it is 99.00. I was planning to keep their service when we moved from WV to WY. In WY our RV park did not allow holes to be dug to mount their dish. That being said why pay for something we can not use. This all being said how would I have known to bring the Transmitter with us. Considering I was going to keep their service for our homeschooling.
After they sent the box to return the router because I was promised I didn't have to return the Transmitter due because of a issue I can not help. They sent it to the wrong address so I had to have them send another box and they charged another fee after I paid the cancellation fee in full. Still have not been satisfied because they charged my account 318.00. I do not want their equipment. I have told them numerous times I have no need for their equipment. I finally got the box to return what I had with was the router and cords. I still have them want the Transmitter when I was told on a recorded line that I just need to return what I had and the account would be satisfied. Just thought I would warn others. I had HughesNet for 2 months. It never worked and since they installed it. They told me it was my router (which was brand new) so I bought a new router. Still does not work. Not even connected directly to the modem. I called them probably 20 times to tell them my internet turns on and off every 30 sec. Spent an hour on the phone each time and they did nothing for me. Then they want me to PAY $158 to have someone come look at it even though it didn't work since I got it. Not to mention I paid 158 for them to come and set it up. The 158 was after their "new customer free installation".
So I cancelled after 2 months and they want me to PAY a $400 cancellation fee and $300 extra if I don't send their equipment back. So send them their equipment back and they send me to collections for $747.44. So I had to call them and get them to drop the charges for not sending the equipment back. And we agreed on a settlement for the rest of the balance which I paid because I didn't want it to hurt my credit. And then almost a year later they send me another bill for more money in collections. I called them and told them I paid them off and they told me that wasn't true and there was nothing they could do and I owe them the money. Luckily I had my settlement letter to prove I do not owe them anything. DO NOT GET HUGHESNET.

I switched from a $34 a month DSL plan from my local telephone provider because I wasn't satisfied with the fact I could only do one thing at a time on DSL. For instance if I was updating an app on my phone I couldn't stream a movie without interruptions. So I decided I would go with my only other option which was Hughes Net Satellite Internet service costing $61.55 a month. I don't usually do much more on the internet than shop. From time to time I will (or would if I could!) stream a movie to my television and keep my electronic systems (laptop and Phone) up to date. I bought into a 24-month contract for 10GB of data with the promise that data was really unlimited but will slow down after the 10GB was used. Now I have a 5gig data plan on cellular and generally roll over 4+ gigabytes due to lack of use.
I'm not sure how Hughes Net calculates data used but my 10gig plan is depleted in a matter of a few days somehow. I now shut off WIFI in my home (except for a few things that must use WIFI) and use my cellular plan. I still end up rolling over 3+gm of my cellular service and have increased the life of my 10gb plan with Hughes Net within a week of 2 max. And most of the time that my WIFI is actually active (because I now have to schedule when I can use my WIFI) is during their Bonus Zone time (2am-8am).
When the plan data is used up the internet access comes to all but a standstill. It takes over a full minute just to load a web page, and don't even think about playing a video as small or short as it may be, because the access is nil for that. Now while I'm waiting on my laptop hooked up to WIFI to load a web page I can use my cellular data plan with my phone to type in the web page address and bring it up nearly 10 times. Hughes Net is neither high speed nor unlimited data as they advertise. I rate them one star only because I can't post a review without giving them any stars. If you're considering them as a provider, my advice to you would be to look into AOL Dial-up service first. I'm sure they are cheaper and the service is comparable.

I have few Internet options where I live so decided to try HughesNet. First problem is that you have to take your chances, you can't try it out first. You pay upfront for equipment and installation and must sign a lengthy contract. The Internet service was unusable, unbearably slow (even though bandwidth tests showed I was receiving the correct bandwidth). And even though I am not a heavy Internet user, the data limits (which they falsely claim don't exist) were used up in about two days. Causing the (otherwise reasonable) monthly fee to go up and rendering the service even less usable. I spent a lot of time with tech support, tried everything they recommended, but in the end the service was unusable. I really wanted it to work because my only other option is microwave Internet for twice the price and 1/10th the bandwidth -- but that microwave Internet is vastly superior to HughesNet.
If you cancel service -- as I did since I was not using it but paying the monthly fee anyway -- there is a several hundred dollar cancellation fee. And, you have to return the equipment, including part of the satellite installation on the roof. Yes, you have to do this yourself, or they will charge you several hundred more dollars. I run an Internet business in Iraq, and if we provided such horrible service, and charged customers penalties for not liking our horrible service, and required them to uninstall complicated equipment, we would not be in business. I honestly do not understand how HughesNet can remain in business. It is one of the worst business experiences of my life (and I'm no spring chicken).

Before you agree to use this company I strongly encourage consumers to look at all options. This provider requires that you get return the satellite receiver along with the modem and that means getting on your roof and attempting a rather difficult disconnect...especially if you are not trained to do the work yourself nor comfortable at heights. If you elect not to do this yourself, Hughesnet will charge a fee of $200 to remove it for you and give you a whole lot of excuses as to why they would prefer not to come get it in the first place.
Hmmm, their equipment, why should the customer have to pay for them to come retrieve it? Furthermore, they see no reason to take that big ** eyesore of a satellite dish so that gets to stay attached to your roof until you pay someone else yet another fee to have it removed. The service overall was horrible and I terminated the contract early for the nominal fee of $250. Just one more reason I'd recommend shopping around. You do get what you pay for.
