If I could give negative stars, I would! My husband’s company switched health insurance from Cigna to UnitedHealthcare this year, and it has been an absolute nightmare. This is by far the worst insurance company we’ve ever dealt with. We went for acupuncture treatments for back pain — six visits total — and UHC only covered ONE. The doctor’s office submitted every single required document, but UHC still flat-out refused to pay. They make everything a battle and drain you with their endless red tape. The most frustrating part? With the exact same doctor and exact same treatment, we never had a single problem with Cigna or Blue Shield. But with UHC, it feels like their goal is to deny claims and wear people down. Stay far, far away from this company if you have a choice! They will waste your time, your energy, and your money.

Yes, I signed my special needs brother in law up for UnitedHealthcare. I have POA. They did not ask for any paperwork to be signed to handle business for him. I told them of his meds and that he gets it through the mail. Well my brother-in-law meds did not show up. I call 9/01/2025 but it was a holiday so we have to wait until today. On 9/1/25 I spoke with someone who said the meds were not in the system...told me to call back today. I called today 9/2/25... Well today he needs to be present. Ok he is not with me because he goes to adult daycare. Today they need an authorization but never provided a form for me to sign. I went to UHC list of doctors only to be told by all 4 oral surgeons no longer take this insurance. We have been trying to cancel this insurance for a month only to be told we can't cancel until open enrollment. But they let him sign up after open enrollment. My son has been in pain for a month. We had been enrolled in autopay for our United Healthcare insurance, and for some unexplained reason, their system stopped taking our payments. I noticed the issue myself, immediately made the payment manually, and even re-entered all the autopay information, which was still active. The card on file was valid, so I believe this was an issue on UHC’s end, not ours.
Weeks later, we received a letter in the mail about the missed payment. By that time, everything had already been corrected and paid. Despite this, UHC terminated our insurance coverage. We were never notified about the termination beforehand, and when I called to explain the situation and ask for reinstatement, they refused and told me we were not eligible.
I find this extremely frustrating and unfair. We acted in good faith, corrected the payment immediately, and maintained autopay as instructed. Yet, due to what appears to be a system error on their side, our coverage was canceled without proper notice. This has been a very disappointing and stressful experience. A system error outside of our control caused the missed payment, yet the consequence was complete loss of coverage—with no flexibility, no accountability, and no transparency. For a healthcare company, this level of service is unacceptable.

Insurance companies should not be telling the doctors or the customers that anything is denied.
I am a customer and I pay for services and have received nothing but aggravation. I have several autoimmune diseases and now spend every day in pain being without my medication. This is the worst insurance company in the USA. Insurance companies in the US shouldn’t even exist. Even in Russia, healthcare is a basic human right. Not here, medication is denied and people die. ★★★★★ This is the best insurance company I have ever worked with — hands down. I’m not exaggerating. Every single person I’ve spoken to at UnitedHealthcare PPO Illinois has gone above and beyond to help me. They don’t just answer your questions — they actually get on the phone and call your doctor, dentist, or any provider directly. Whatever the issue, they walk with you every step of the way until it’s solved. If you need medical supplies or help getting your doctor to complete paperwork, they’ll assign you a dedicated worker who will contact your doctor, therapist, or whoever is needed, and handle all the red tape to make sure the paperwork is done right.
I was very fortunate to work with Chyna **, who helped me resolve a dental billing problem where I was being triple charged. She also made it possible for me to receive a beautiful wheelchair and a hospital bed I truly needed. I’ve never had an insurance company personally speak to providers to make sure I got approved for care and equipment — but they did. They also make sure no facility is trying to rip you off or overcharge you. They advocate for you — or right alongside you — to ensure you’re treated fairly. They value you as a client and make sure others value you as well. It’s impossible to list everything they’ve helped me with because it would be way over the word limit for a review. All I can say is: UnitedHealthcare workers treat you like family.
P.S. They also have excellent benefits — especially dental and OTC benefits. You can even use the OTC card to buy groceries at stores like Jewel-Osco, Walmart, Meijer, Walgreens, Dollar General, and more (depending on your area). I don’t receive food stamp benefits, so this has been a huge blessing. I get $218 OTC each month, plus you can earn up to $50 for doing things like working out, getting flu shots, completing your physical, nurse visits, and more.

What is happening?
We received no communication, no warning, and no opportunity to address any supposed issue before our coverage was cut off. Their lack of transparency and disregard for the well-being of their customers is appalling. Not to get too personal, but I’ve had a lot of life and career changes over the past year, and my mental health began to suffer. Through the UnitedHealthcare app, I found a coaching program that helped me manage my anxiety and negative feelings toward these growing pains. Unfortunately, the way the program was advertised was misleading, and I was left with a list of hefty claims I didn’t feel I should have to pay.
I spoke with multiple representatives from UnitedHealthcare and the third-party coaching app, but no one was able to help me... until Lisa stepped in. She called me weekly with updates, reminding me she was still working on my case. Lisa made me feel seen, heard, and valued, and that alone felt priceless. My employer decided to switch insurance providers this fiscal year and went with this one. This change was supposed to have no impact on my prescriptions or health coverage, as the plan we left was Blue Cross. I called my providers to make sure that they had the new insurance on file once I got my new insurance cards, which took a week to get (which is a really long time considering I am on medication that does not allow for missed doses). I thought all the changes were fine because the insurance company billed for my correct medication at the correct pharmacy. Since the billing went through, I thought there was no problem. As a part of my condition, I am not allowed to drive so I called UHC to see if they could help me set up my medication from my current pharmacy to home delivery through Optum Rx. Here comes the fun. Grab your popcorn.
2. Once I called my doctor to see if they could put in a new order for the medicine, it took about another week to get it. When my doctor's office called, they said that their system was down, so they couldn't check. When I called the following day, the representative said that their system didn't have an outage. Who was lying? My agent or the one my doctor's office spoke with? Regardless, this is another clear sign of poor management on the part of this company.
3. Once they said they received my prescription, I got an email saying that they put my order on hold and I needed to call them. I called Optum Rx, and despite my physician ordering from the correct place, UHC/ Optum Rx just defaulted to using a policy that I had through them 4 years prior. You would think when I logged in with my account that all the information would be accurate since they are the same company... Apparently not. I spent about 25 minutes or so on the phone with two separate representatives to get this all sorted out.
4. When they sent my medication, they sent it with the same active ingredient as what my physician ordered but called it a completely different medication. When I called the Optum Rx pharmacist, he said it would work the same, but it would be a dissolvable instead of a swallowable. I received 5 bottles of the medication (which normally is 3, perhaps because the manufacturer is different), and the medicine is supposed to be swallowed... What the heck?5. I was also sent a whole bunch of privacy and paper records. The last page required me to sign and return the material. Not only was this return mailer not prepaid (like every other company I have worked with), the envelope was not suitable for the signed material that would be going back. I don't even understand why I would need to send something through the mail when I am marked as paperless anyway.
In a nutshell: This company obviously has no idea how it operates at a logistics, customer-facing, and/or medical care provider level. Additionally, this issue with my insurance being the previous one doesn't make sense because they verify my insurance information over the phone and through chat before we can even begin. Idiots. Avoid this company like the plague.

United healthcare Medicare totally sucks. Buyer beware. My wife has had it since January as part of her Medicare. Since then she has had to complain multiple times because they can not run their app normally. She has had problems signing in to app. She called. They took care of it and it worked 1 time after that then she called again and they told her to hit the stupid box on the app and they would change her password so she did and they told her she had to call customer service. This is a game they should not be playing with people's lives then she is supposed to have $2500 for dental and according to the dentist they won't cover $1200 procedure so she try to file a claim online but it won't Password. This is ridiculous. Never had a problem with an insurance company like this. They are horrible. Do not use them.

I purchased a United Health Care US Health Insurance policy last year, consisting of 6 different subsections that they use to rip off their clients. I have Secure Advantage Sickness, Secure Advantage accident, Secure Advantage health and wellness plus, Medguard III, Accident Protector, Income Protector, all of which I was assured was an outstanding plan that I planned on keeping for the foreseeable future. I thought it was odd that they required me to have 6 different categories inside my policy, but I just assumed it was part of their marketing to make the policy seem more robust. Sort of like touting the US Health Group & Freedom Life wrapped in star spangled red, white and blue…Heck, they are as American as apple pie. Well after nearly 2 hours on the phone with several people in India from their call center, I discovered a lot more than just their name is a lie.
For perspective, I injured my shoulder in October of last year, sucked it up until January hoping it would get better on its own and finally broke out the provider list and went to a Dr. in my network to find out what was wrong. Full thickness tear on my supraspinatus, retracted quite a bit and torn labrum…break out the scalpel.
I had several appointments prior to surgery, an MRI, X-rays, blood work, Dr. visits all that would total up to roughly $3000 out of pocket. This is relevant because my maximum out of pocket based on my plan is $2000. I didn’t really start thinking about my out-of-pocket expenses until I received 2 more bills from the surgery center and the anesthesiologist from my surgery in March that came out to roughly another $4000.
This is when I tried to make heads or tails of my billing on the US Health website. I finally gave up on banging my head against the wall of their convoluted system and called customer care. Don’t get me wrong, I think the folks they hired in India to handle their customer service and claims are doing their best to understand the people in the US that have bought the policies, and as one of those US people I really tried my best to understand them as well, but trying to communicate a concern while also deciphering what was being said in accents thicker than The Great Wall of China is not conducive to a fulfilling customer service experience.
While they were very good about letting me know that I had fulfilled my deductible requirements, they seemed to struggle with the concept that this meant I should not have to pay anymore out of pocket for my health care. At one point I was told that I had to pay the additional charges because I used Dr’s out of network. I argued with them until they verified that both the Dr. and surgical center were actually in network. Then we circled back to the bills. I was then told that while I had fulfilled the out-of-pocket maximum, my plan required me to pay 20% of all services.
Once I gathered the pieces of my skull off the wall after exploding from the utter absurdity of their position, I demanded to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor who was no easier to understand and sadly a student of the same nonsensical, circular arguments I’d been subjected to for the last 45 minutes eventually told me that while I had fulfilled my max out of pocket for the Secureadvantage Sickness, I had to fulfill my max out of pocket for the Secureadvantage Accident. Yes, you got that right, shoulder injuries are now considered an “illness” to the galactically stupid.
According to the supervisor, I needed to go back to the Dr.s that performed the MRI, X-Rays, bloodwork and various other elements that were done before the surgery because they submitted their claims using the Sickness designation instead of the Accident designation. Shockingly, those same Dr.s managed to get it right when they cut me open and fixed my shoulder. I find it incredibly hard to believe that an MRI tech would list an MRI with dye injected into my shoulder joint… about as much fun as fiberglass underwear…would list that procedure as something that was due to illness…”poor guy caught a bad case of torn rotator cuff”.
Bottom line, they play a shell game with the different elements of the policy to make sure they force the insured to pay more than they should to save the insurance company money. Each of the 6 facets of their little diamond of deception requires the $2000 out of pocket max. Most likely they assume people won’t notice that they are paying more out of pocket because none of the bills come from US Health, they come from the Dr.’s and dribble in months after the procedure. Then if you do catch what they are doing they try to convince you that you went out of network or demand that the insured do the leg work with the Dr.s to get them to change billing codes on invoices they’ve already been paid for.
I have not started this procedure yet, but I anticipate hearing, “we filled it out the way the insurance told us to, you’ll need to take it up with them.” So, I am left with either overpaying or duking it out with US Health while my credit gets jacked for not paying a bill my insurance was supposed to pay. Do not be fooled by US Health Group/United Health Care or Freedom Life. Despite all the red, white and blue, they offshore their customer service, they do everything they can to avoid paying for legitimate services that their insured require all while demanding premium rates.
Companies like this are why people hate insurance companies and why Dr.s have to employ full time staff to navigate their ridiculous claims processing or contact attorneys to force the insurance company to adhere to the letter of the policies they sell. I can’t give any advice on which company to get insurance from, but I can wholeheartedly advise anyone considering these con artists to run…don’t walk…sprint like Usain freakin Bolt away from US Health like your life depends on it…because it just might.

UHC/Optum partnered with Master Card for FSA accounts. They make errors often and only apologize and "put in a ticket" but can NEVER help you immediately even when it is their fault. After receiving a letter requesting receipts and description of service for a payment to a long time healthcare provider of mine (which I have paid with a UHC FSA card for several years?) to confirm my charges to an actual DR. office, I needed to provide paperwork and receipts to prove eligibility of expenditures. Receipt and Paperwork (provided in the letter) evidence can only be made via regular mail or FAX (of all things).
I received a second letter 2 weeks after my confirmation of receipt FAX stated they had not received the receipts and paperwork required and would be lock my card until received the evidence is received. Follow up calls to them stated FAX was not reliable and I should mail them in. However, mail (which is now unreliable) would not arrive until after the card was to be locked. A resubmission via email would not be accepted. Finally, after multiple calls, a manager let me email the evidence FAXed previously to them for submission. I spoke with them that confirmed all paperwork and receipt evidence was accurate and acceptable to keep my card from being locked.
Well, the card was still subsequently locked with a letter claiming my evidence was incomplete. Multiple follow up calls later I learned they only processed 1 of the 2 pieces of evidence they requested. I finally was able to speak with someone (hours on the phone) that acknowledged there was an oversight and it would be resolved on their end. It did not get resolved. More hour long calls I was given a "Ticket #" for a resolution (no real resolution). More follow up calls the issue was resolved.
However, when I tried to use my card they had "Cancelled the account and Card" with my money still in the account. This required issuing of a new card with a new account number. New card finally received and funds were not loaded into the new account "Yes you have X dollars in your account but we can't link it to the new card.. Please give 24hrs for funds access." 24 hours later, still no funds. 48 hours later, still no funds. Another hour on the phone, another resolution ticket # - "This will take 3-5 business days to resolve."
2 months and 8+ hours on the phone with them and still no access to the money in my account. "We are sorry. We understand" and niceties do not make good service. I am hoping this last additional hour I spent on the phone with their Manila-based CSRs may finally resolve the problems they themselves created. I don't have a lot of confidence.

The greed of this health insurance company is unmatched. I think we can classify them as the greediest of all health insurance companies for sure!! I pay for my insurance through my employer and my portion alone over the course of 8 years employed has been approximately 90k and that’s just my portion (my employer pays even more). On top of that I’m a nurse so rarely see a dr until recent so UHC has paid little medical bills for me!! So of course I was in a car accident and injured due to a drunk driver and they had to finally pay some things for me. UHC has the audacity to hire a lawyer and put a lien on MY MONEY cause they paid some medical bills which I understand that’s part of the process but at the same time, it’s rare that a health insurance even does this!! Of course not this greedy company!
They are wanting me to pay 7k to them for what they paid and all I’m being offered is 17k. So 6k goes to my lawyers, 800 litigation costs, and 7k to UNC plus I still need to pay 1k in medical bills. What does that leave me with UHC?? $300 for the pain and suffering I endured. For the months I went without a car cause the drunk guy hit me, or even the work time I lost. UHC could have just let this one go. I’ve paid enough and endured very little to no bills. I’ll be dropping this insurance company as soon as I am able!! Never will I use UHC again!

The UH rep told me the provider was in network. I saw the provider for one visit that included lots of labs and a scan. UH denied all three claims due to the provider being out of network. I had downloaded the chat discussion as proof of what the UH rep told me and used it to appeal the three separate claims for the one provider, and the one date of service.
UH accepted the appeal for the lowest charge $11.70 on a "one time basis for the date of service". But they denied the $4,216.95 charge as they said it was a "one time basis" and this claim wasn't appealed at the same time as the other was (I appealed them as they hit the website, within days of each other) even though they said "for the date of service". I fought the charges for nearly 2 years for a service that would have been FULLY covered under my plan. I would RUN from having United Healthcare as your provider. I have had a stellar experience with United Healthcare with coverage of open heart surgery and complications that followed. There was never an issue with coverage for ER visits or prior authorizations for in-patient or out-patient services. That is, until recently. As can sometimes happen with open-heart surgery for valve replacement, arrhythmias are common. They covered by cardioversion and ablation for atrial flutter, but are not denying my ablation for atrial fibrillation.
I have met all the necessary diagnostic criteria for coverage per their posted guidelines, my doctor has appealed with clear evidence that we meet all of their criteria, and still they are denying. They are also using deceptive tactics, like notifying me of the denials on weekend and holiday evenings, not telling my provider (they usually call them), telling us to wait for certain decision points which caused us to miss a peer-to-peer opportunity.
They tell me they're going to call my provider and then they don't. They are not updating the provider-facing portal with information about my case. My family care coordinator has leaked bits of information that they are not telling my provider, and at one point admitted on a recorded line that she's seeing conflicting information as to who is making repeated denial decisions in her systems. On once screen she says it's a cardiologist, on the other screen she says it's a generalist. She also says the denial reason might be because I haven't had a TSH blood test, but they haven't told my provider any of this.
To make matters worse, they have approved a Watchman procedure because I have AFIB. The Watchman only eliminates the need to take a blood thinner, it is not curative for AFIB. The ablation is what cures AFIB, it's also an accepted first-line treatment per UHC's own stated policies and coverage criteria guidelines. It just doesn't make sense. They are also using a number of delay and depose tactics, like only notifying me and not my provider. When my provider called the first time, UHC told both of us that they needed EKG strips, which were already sent so my provider sent them again. Then they said to wait for the EKG strips to be reviewed, that this might take several days, and that not waiting could risk us not being able to do a peer-to-peer.
After the EKG strips were reviewed, they said we were still denied, and more importantly, that because we didn't request a peer-to-peer in the first 24 hours one was not possible. The literally told us to wait and then blamed us for not acting! My provider sent in a formal appeal letter, clearly referencing their coverage criteria and stating that I had met or exceeded all of the criteria and benchmark scores for covering this procedure. They are still denying, claiming we haven't met their guidelines. Deny, delay, depose. It's what happens when UHC decides you're too expensive.

I had just got a new phone and was having trouble logging in from the phone. Using my desktop computer, I was able to log in. Using the desktop, I began "chatting" with one agent after another to get some direction on how to log in from my phone. I started with Simone, then was forwarded to Diana, and then Lovella. No answer. I was getting frustrated and began to feel unappreciated as one of their paying customers. In these situations, I start by giving my full name and then make my request. The agent then gives their first name and then begins to ask me for more information, such as my phone number, address, zip code, insurance number, etc.
At this point, I ask for their full name so that we can continue the exchange formally and professionally, and so that the power dynamic between us remains balanced. The line goes blank for five or ten seconds and the agent either says "we don't give out our full names", or they try to continue the transaction ignoring my request. I stop them and ask again. Again, they try to deflect me. I then ask, "Ok, if you will not give me your full name then tell me why that is." Again no answer. I then ask, "Does everyone in your organization only have one name?" Again, no answer. I ask to speak with a supervisor.
In this case, I was transferred nine times from Simone to Diana, to Lovella to Liz, to John, to Michael, to Tammar, to Kate, and eventually Edison who said he was a supervisor. I asked for his full name and he said Edison **. I asked why he was the first to give his full name, why all the agents before him did not, and does everyone in your organization only give first names. Again, no answer. These people and the organizations they represent need to understand that if they are interacting with a paying customer, they must do so in a business-like, professional and cordial manner. As frontline representatives, it is their duty to build trust with their customers. To not do so is rude and unprofessional. I was on the phone for a little over four hours and my issue was not resolved.

United Healthcare is the biggest scam. My family has had several health insurance companies over the years, and I can say, UHC is by far, the absolute worst. Shortly after getting this insurance, my husband had an emergency appendectomy. We later received a letter from UHC stating they reviewed his case and would not cover the surgery because it was not medically necessary. The letter also stated he just had a stomach ache and should've been sent home.
In addition, it mentioned that his pain was Gynecological-related. WHAT!! I called the hospital and they verified that his appendectomy was coded correctly. Called the insurance company, they seemed surprised it was so screwed up. Now that we have that problem taken care of.... the surgeon also discovered my husband had a-fib at the time of his DR visit and was also experiencing it during his followup. Doc said he should have this heart procedure done. Weeks later, we got a letter from the doctor, stating insurance approved the procedure and we can make an appointment. However, we now received a letter from the insurance company stating that the procedure is "not medically necessary."
I'm not sure who is reviewing these files, maybe an individual who is doesn't read or write English. Or maybe a team of chimps from the zoo... a month and a half being on this insurance plan and I'm ready to cancel. We are almost better off having no insurance and paying out of pocket for any medical needs we may have. UHC has been a nightmare to deal with. They can't seem to get anything straight. They are an absolute joke. We pay a lot of money to have health coverage each month, only for them to decide what is medically necessary and what is not, going above doctors orders, and to screw up reading hospital records. Hello, UHC.... my husband is having A FIB. Can he get it taken care of?? Do you want it to get worse and cause more problems for him?? The level of incompetence from whoever is reviewing these files is actually insane. I would give negative stars if I could.

I used to love United Health Care, but recently it has been nothing short of miserable. When I had to get new glasses because of a cataract surgery, they were supposed to cover new glasses. I had to make at least four phone calls (and yes, be on hold for a lot of the time) and had to send in documents over and over and over. Finally got it paid but it was only due to a herculean effort.. Now they have changed the dental benefit to only cover cleanings (used to be up to $1000 -- 1/2 of anything else). I went in for a cleaning, and the disallowed part of the X-rays as they told me they were not all covered under my limited plan. How is my dentist supposed to do his job if he doesn't have X-rays?!!! I would look around for another provider if you want to get your claims paid.

I’m baffled by the reviews stating that customer service is good. It is the worst waste of time I’ve ever experienced with any business. The agents avoid the customer surveys at the end of your call by never hanging up and they will abandon you by asking you to hold but never returning to the call (I’ve waited as long as 45 minutes on a silent line). Whenever I have called and I’ve called them maybe 12 times, the person who answers the call knows nothing about insurance and typically they will attempt to route my call elsewhere. They are pleasant but know nothing. The people they have routed my calls to seem annoyed because they are not supposed to handle the issues I have had. They routed me to Medicare and Medicare literally requested that I log a complaint against them for not paying my claim and trying to blame it on Medicare. Even internally I reached a group where the person asked to speak to the supervisor of the agent and she said okay.
Me and the internal resource waited on the phone for 30 minutes with no return to the call by the agent who had transferred the call. After 10 minutes he had said, “I’m sure she is still working on it”, but at 30 minutes he didn’t know what was going on so we decided to hang up. I believe they have outsourced their help desk. The only way I have been able to get any help is to lodge a complaint with BBB or Medicare. They have told me that they will increase the training for their agents but I’ve seen no change. In the next Medicare enrollment period I will be seeking plans through other providers. UHC didn’t used to be horrible like this but currently don’t bother calling the help desk.

In order to utilize a hefty HSA fund provided by IBM over a career that spanned over 30 years my husband and I "must use United Healthcare's Advantage plan only" as a supplement to Medicare. While the plan over the past 1-1/2 years has paid "as indicated" on the policy their customer service is horrendous. IBM has a "dedicated" phone line with UHC for retirees. Most of the calls I've made to them are barely helpful as the majority of agents (if that's what you call them) I've spoken with do not fully understand the plan enough to be of much help.... and if they do understand they do not have the authority to assist.
Today was the last straw!. I spent 59 minutes and 10 seconds on the phone, was transferred 6 times (having to repeat myself with each transfer) and finally outright disconnected. I was simply asking for a corrected Explanation of Benefits to provide to Optum for an HSA payment made. I was initially told that the agent was making the correction and it would take 2 - 3 weeks for said correction to be available. When I explained that 2-3 weeks was unexceptable as Optum had put a hold on our HSA funds awaiting the EOB the agent seemed dazed and confused and simply repeated herself.
I asked to speak with a supervisor. I was already 40 minutes into the call at this point. I was on hold for a couple of minutes and then thrown back into the loop, only to begin the process again. I was transferred 6 times, repeated myself all 6 times, and at the 59 minute 10 second mark "disconnected"! If United Healthcare has a dedicated line for IBM retirees they need to ensure competent folks are available. I am absolutely infuriated with the lack of knowledge, consideration and ability to resolve issues.

If I could give United Healthcare zero stars, I would. My experience with UHC has been nothing short of frustrating, and unfortunately, it's part of a pattern I’ve noticed across multiple interactions with them. When my employer switched to UHC, I was assured that my existing primary care provider (PCP) was in-network. That turned out to be false. UHC then randomly assigned me a PCP—someone I had never heard of—and when I called to schedule an appointment, I was told the earliest available date was 11 months away. That’s unacceptable for anyone, let alone someone managing an ongoing medical condition.
Because I need a referral to see a specialist, I contacted UHC to request a change in PCP. A representative told me the new PCP assignment would take effect immediately and that I could go ahead and schedule an appointment. I did—but then noticed in the UHC app that the new PCP wouldn’t officially be in effect until the following month. When I called to clarify, I was told the original rep gave me incorrect information, and I’d need to cancel the appointment. No apology, no urgency—just a shrug.
To make matters worse, the representative stayed on the line at the end of the call to prevent me from leaving a customer survey. That speaks volumes. This is not a one-off. My family and I have experienced repeated issues—confusion, miscommunication, and a noticeable lack of accountability. There’s a reason UHC has such poor reviews. Based on my experience, I strongly urge others to consider different providers. Healthcare is too important to be managed this poorly.

I’m here to tell you exactly how much I despise United Healthcare. This is not just some half-hearted complaint – this is a rage-filled, disgusted outcry from someone who’s sick of being kicked around by a so-called “health insurance” company that’s nothing more than a greedy, bloodsucking monster. United Healthcare is the absolute worst. They don’t cover a damn thing – NOTHING. Their “Healthy Choice” plan is a total farce – they preach about healthy choices but apparently eating ice cream once in a while makes me some kind of unworthy peasant. They’re basically telling me, “You’re poor, so suffer, and don’t you dare dream of anything outside our pathetic coverage.” It’s infuriating how they take away every small comfort and then have the gall to pat themselves on the back for it.
But let’s get to the real travesty: My doctor – an actual medical professional – prescribed me a hormonal patch twice a week. But guess what? United Healthcare decides they know better. “Oh, we’ll only cover it once a week, thanks.” Who the hell do they think they are? They’re not doctors. They’re not even people, as far as I can tell – they’re a soulless money machine that laughs in your face while denying your basic healthcare. They don’t care if you’re in pain, if you’re suffering, if your quality of life goes down the drain – all they care about is keeping your money and giving you as little as possible in return.
And let’s be real – it’s not just me. This is what they do to everyone. They’re actively screwing over the most vulnerable people – refusing to cover procedures that are literally supposed to be covered. In 2023, these parasites raked in $22 billion in profit while countless people are stuck fighting them for the most basic medical needs. They’re robbing people of their health, their dignity, and their hope. It’s not just corporate greed – it’s corporate cruelty.
I’m sick to my stomach thinking about how many lives they’ve messed up. And yet, they get away with it because they’re too big to care. Well, here’s the truth: United Healthcare doesn’t want you healthy. They want you desperate. They want you trapped. They want you to think you’re nothing – just another number in their endless profit machine. If you’re stuck with them, I’m sorry. Truly, I am. But if you have a choice, run. Run as far away as you can from this predatory, disgusting excuse for a healthcare company. Because United Healthcare isn’t about healthcare – it’s about robbing you blind and leaving you to fend for yourself. United Healthcare, I hope you choke on those billions.

DANGER TO SENIORS. In the last three years, United Health Care FAILED TO RECORD three of my monthly payments, which were send the same day I received the new payment coupon. UNITED cashed my checks, which were sent way before the due date, but they FAILED TO RECORD THOSE PAYMENTS FOR AS MUCH AS 26 DAYS, AFTER they actually received them. Then United sent threatening letters to CANCEL my health insurance, because they recorded them as LATE PAYMENTS.
Our Attorney, the State of New Mexico, AARP Administration, and the BBB have advised me that I am probably being targeted for CANCELLATION, because of my age and health. That type of deliberate billing abuse is common, our Attorney warns us. Trank all your checks, date you sent them, and the actual day that United cashed those checks. PROTECT YOURSELF. This billing abuse is actually illegal, so make complaints to your State, the BBB, AARP, and to Insurance Commissioners, both State and Federal.

I would never recommend this insurance company. I only have it because it is what is a availably thru my employer. I was diagnosed with breast in January. I have had multi procedures since then. I started receiving bills for these that kept saying United Health said I did not have them for insurance. I contacted them, they said we show you in our system. But they could see that everything was denied. They said it was a glitch in the system. This was in Feb. I have made numerous phone calls to them. I have been told a supervisor would be calling me back. I still have not heard from that person.
I keep calling back then in April they finally got the glitch fixed. Needless to say 4 months later, and told me they would contact everyone and have them resubmit the claims to be processed I did not trust so I called everyone Which they have started to do. But yesterday once again I see things are being denied. Why because Untied Health says the claims were not submitted on time and they need proof that the medical service were done and when they submitted the claim the first time.
I said, "Are you serious? You denied all these claims saying I did not have United Health Care. You called all these companies to have everything resubmitted because it was an error on your part that took 4 months to fix which is 120 days. Now you're saying they are being submitted past the 90 days." Remember they did not fix the issues until the middle of April, 120 days. They received the resubmitted claims the 29th of April, 2 weeks after they fixed their issues. I told them I have enough to deal with and I'm suppose to try and stay stress free. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN DEALING WITH UNITED HEALTH

Health Insurance Review: Frustration, Misinformation, and Endless Hassle. Health insurance should offer security and support, but my experience has been the exact opposite—constant stress, misinformation, and battles just to get the care I already pay for. Over the past two years, I’ve faced five major issues with my insurance, and each one has caused unnecessary frustration and anxiety.
1️⃣ Denied essential medication. After my last ovary removal, my doctor prescribed an Estradiol patch to help with severe menopause symptoms. Despite its necessity, my insurance denied it, even after an appeal. For over a month, I endured unbearable hot flashes, chills, night sweats, and exhaustion, only to discover that my doctor had actually gotten it approved weeks earlier—but no one told me.
2️⃣ Uninsured for an entire month. My marriage in February should have ended my state insurance, but instead, they kept it active through November, while I paid for Medicare starting in April. When December arrived, I suddenly had zero coverage, despite having paid for it. After multiple five-hour calls over several days, insurance still acted like it wasn’t their problem and showed zero urgency in fixing their mistake.
3️⃣ Name change disaster and billing errors. After legally changing my name everywhere—including Social Security, the DMV, and my insurance—I went to the ER, only to have my claim denied. My insurance listed me under my married name, while the hospital still had my maiden name, creating an unnecessary conflict. I was given incorrect instructions, made repeat visits, and months later, I got another bill for the same visit, forcing me to start over with yet another exhausting phone battle.
4️⃣ Misled about primary doctor coverage. In October, insurance companies relentlessly called to convince customers to sign up. When I listed my primary doctor, I was told Cigna was my best choice and would cover my visits. When I arrived for my annual exam, I was told they don’t take my plan at all! Had I known, I never would have chosen this insurance. To make things worse, when I updated my address, Cigna told me they could no longer provide coverage—leaving me stranded again.
5️⃣ Getting basic insurance details became a nightmare. When I needed to give my gynecologist’s office my insurance info, I couldn’t find my Cigna card. I called them, assuming a quick fix. Instead, I was transferred multiple times, told they couldn’t give me my ID number over the phone, and instructed to use the Cigna app—which I couldn’t log into without a reference number that they refused to provide. After more transfers and conflicting information, I finally got the details—but only after being told I had been trying to access the wrong app the entire time!
Aggressive insurance sales tactics. Through all of this, insurance companies bombarded me with phone calls, pushing me to make an immediate decision, rather than giving me time to compare options. They refused to offer fair comparisons between plans and pressured me to sign up on the spot—not because it was best for me, but because they wanted my money right away.
Final Thoughts. Dealing with health insurance has been one of the most stressful, exhausting, and frustrating experiences. The lack of transparency, constant misinformation, and refusal to communicate properly have repeatedly put me through unnecessary hardship. Insurance should be about helping patients, yet it feels designed to drain time, energy, and resources, leaving people fighting for basic coverage they already pay for. If health insurance actually worked the way it should, none of this should have happened. #InsuranceFail #HealthcareMess #PatientsDeserveBetter

I used to think UHC was amazing, but since 2024 that's not true. Being told that I'd get reimbursed & then they don't reimburse AND not being given a reason. Suddenly not paying for doctors. Being told to get a pre-authorization and they'd pay for it, BUT they won't. I, literally, do what I have been told to do BUT they don't follow through on their end. Suddenly don't cover my optometrist, who I've seen for years, but they won't even send me a list of eye doctors they will approve. SOOO much stuff... Copy of claims & other papers that they legally have to send to me, but aren't. Yes, I'm even dealing with the corporate office for some of this...and yes, I'm still being lied to.
UHC has gone from great to infuriating and not caring about my medical needs at all. I've tried to reach out to a lot of people, including John Rex & Andrew Witty, but...got "pawned off" to Susan **...She has blatantly lied in emails & over the phone. I wonder if those men even know that I'd reached out to them. If they'd fix these issues, which they already know about these & more, I would very quickly put out a review that they've messed up, but apologized and fixed everything. It wouldn't cost them too much, either. (*I have tooooo many receipts & pictures to post on here, but I have a lot!)

The UHC web site is always broken, nothing works as it should. Try to reorder prescriptions... Every time something wrong and get stuck on the phone for hours. EVERY TIME. Online CHAT is a joke - please hold I'm told - they go away. This is one company that is confused, mixed up, unhelpful, and broken.

What a Billing Nightmare. I had a simple outpatient procedure.... Then the bills started coming in. The surgery center wanted 3500 dollars at the door because of the Bad insurance plan. I overpaid them 400 dollars once my claim went in. Now I have to Fight to get my 400-dollar refund. The United Plan is horrible. After 3500 dollars They only pay 70 Percent!!!! What a SCAM.

We’ve had UHC for about 8 years. The first several years were great and I’m not sure what happened but I am convinced they are the worst insurance company out there! To get any kind of care accomplished is like pulling teeth!!!! They deny everything and then you fight just to get necessary care. Don’t waste your precious time or your hard earned money with this company, they aren’t worth it!!!!

They do cover what they say, and I have no issues there with them. But the constant phone calls, even after asking, and then telling them to leave me alone. It is phone harassment from this company. They will call you multiple times a week, about any little thing they can, and refuse to stop. When you block one number they call on another, just like scammers. I am about to leave this company because of the Phone Harassment.

What a nightmare just to get the insulin that keeps me alive. My plan started on 1/1/25, and it has been a headache from the beginning. Optum is just awful, so now I'm using Publix. I have several medical conditions and among other things, I use two types of insulin. I called them last week to ensure that both types were covered and to confirm the $35 cap for both since I have a Medicare Plan. That call took 20-30 minutes. The "advocate" did not know anything about the Medicare cap on insulin, she had to get help, but came back and assured me that both insulins I use were covered at $35. Today I found out from my Publix pharmacy the they only covered my expensive long acting insulin, Toujeo, but not the fast acting insulin which I so desperately need. I check the UHC website stated that there was no alternative to Novolog - seriously?
I called and was on hold forever, got an "advocate" whose English was terrible, then transferred to another "advocate" whose English was worse. I tried to explain that I need fast acting insulin or I could die. "Advocate" # 2 (supposedly a "pharmacy advocate") put me on hold but about 15 minutes later, the call was disconnected. All I wanted to obtain was the name of another fast acting insulin which is covered - I don't care what brand it is, I just do not want to go into a diabetic coma. Then I called back and was connected to someone named David, who actually helped me. He told me that Humulog is most definitely covered without a special authorization. Now I must contact Emory's Endocrinology Dept and ask them to send a Rx for Humulog.
My endo is the head of the department but is on vacation this week. I sure hope that someone at his office can help me, or I could die. In addition to Diabetes 1.5, I have Addison's and must take steroids to stay alive. Stress and anxiety are NOT good for me. I even had a hassle with getting my steroid Rx filled! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? HORRIBLE.
