I have a PPO plan and they constantly send me a bill for one claim 3 times or more. If you pay it more than once you have to wait for a reimbursement that doesn’t always come, they overcharge claim after claim. Went to a covered doctor for diabetes, and they charged me $185 because the doctor reviewed my Blood sugar data. We’re nothing but profits to them.

My only regret, like so many others, is that we can't leave a zero star or negative 50 star review. This is hands down the worst, greediest, most completely useless blood sucking needless middle man of a corporation on the planet. They do not deserve to be in business. They frequently put their unrestrained greed over ANY sense of patient care. Check their claim denial rate vs literally any other of these self necessitating plagues masquerading around as "insurance" companies. They are bar none the biggest joke of a company to ever exist, and I pray upon prayer that they go under before they destroy any more lives.
My heart goes out to anyone dealing with them, there is no lower form of vile filth on the planet than these blood sucking leeches. If you are considering using them, DO NOT USE THIS INSURANCE, THEY WILL HAPPILY LET YOU DIE BECAUSE IT IS CHEAPER TO DO SO. Trust me, trust ALL the other reviews. There is no worst company in this entire world. Turn back.

United Healthcare is the WORST insurance company in the country. Denied my pre authorized hospitalization to have a tumor removed. Leaving me with a $100,000 hospital bill. United Healthcare just denied my much needed ** patch that I've been on for years, telling me I have to go on their approved medications. My doctor sent a pre authorization and noted my prescription is medically necessary and United Healthcare STILL DENIED MY MEDICATION. DO NOT GET UNITED HEALTHCARE. United Health Care part G supplemental. United health care customer service is worthless. The representative that handled the application for the policy misled me about the coverage, you better read the fine print. They keep calling me, leaving no messages, or when I call back they don't know why they called. They outsource their customer service to other countries, mostly the philippines and the representatives don't speak english well enough to undrstand what the customer wants. I finally got through to the "Customer Loyalty Team", the rep gave me the wrong 10 digit extension number to contact her, the prompt sends you to a genereic voicemail, no call back. This company should be invesigated by the FDA, the Department of Consumer Affairs, and the US Attorney General's office for giving false and misleading information, and geneal incompetence.

Continually raising UHC Part B coverage rates. Increased Part B supplemental rates approximately 300% since coverage began about 7 years ago. My UHC prescription cost soared from $38.60 per month in December 2024 to $64.00 a month starting in January 2025 which is a 65% increase. What this company has done to its customers the past few years is criminal in my opinion.

Never really had a bad experience until these past couple days, when they refuse to authorize a medication I’ve been taking for years. Giving me strange reasons as to why they aren’t approving it, despite me saying I’ve taken it for years and that I had to buy an emergency supply of medicine out of pocket. Not sure what has changed, but can see that they truly are money hungry and don’t seem to care about their clients.

Do not waste your time with them. Customer service line is awful and no resolutions are ever met. They obviously care 0 about us the patient and it shows. Do your research on the internet about the company. I sadly did not until after I had accepted the plan and began experiencing so many problems. After some internet searches it became so obvious what a mistake I had made. The reviews are awful and they are the #1 claim denier. Apparently not only with claims but drugs also.
They are laying off employees, they are being sued by people, and obviously everybody knows about the CEO. This is a reputable named company I thought. I was wrong, it's just a well-known name. This runaround lasted for four months. Dentist would not continue seeing me until money paid. I refused to pay because United Healthcare supposed to pay.
Finally dentist told me come in to office. His office manager called United Healthcare and had me talk to them. When United Healthcare started lying to me again she took phone and started disputing United Healthcare's lying representative. After a 2 hour conversation she handed phone back to me and United Healthcare's representative admitted to "misinforming" me. And told me tooth extractions would be paid. Also whenever I try to contact United Healthcare by phone they put an AI (Artificial Idiot) operator who just continuously says "do you want to place an order", "your ucard balance is..." and "do you want to request a new Ucard". This UnitedHealthcare company has fabricated false medical statements about the patient in order to deny coverage. The company completely ignores the patient's doctor's statements in order to deny coverage. From the patient’s nurse to every level within the company, there is no one to communicate with because they’ve built the rejection process on lies and false stories. There’s no room for discussion, not even about the claims. My mother suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney failure.
The nurse (her name is Xuemei **) said to me, “Your mother looks great and healthy,” yet a rejection letter followed. When calling the company, their responses are either, "I don’t know," or "That's the company’s decision." Another rejection letter came after that. Once we received the rejection, there was no one left to talk to. UnitedHealthcare not only denied my mother's coverage but has also rejected many other seniors using the same pattern. I also want to warn other reputable insurance companies: DO NOT hire anyone from UnitedHealthcare because they are all liars!

I used to have have United healthcare silver this year 2025 in January. I switched to UnitedHealthcare bronze. When I switched, my old plan was inactive because I was switching plans so I did not pay for the month. I switched with United healthcare marketplace. They sent over the paperwork for it when I first called because it had not been updated. The woman told me the plan that I had supposedly signed up for, wasn't in the system. I called the Health Care marketplace again. They had to send my information three times to UHC. The second time it was sent they said they received the paperwork and it was supposed to start February 1 but UHC put it as March 1. I called to ask them to change it and the paperwork said February 1. They sent it to the escalation team the escalation team instead of fixing it, put my premium for my new plan on my old plan and made it to where both healthcare plans were inactive.
It’s like I paid for this month of insurance for no reason because the healthcare check ups that I’ve been needing to go to for weeks now I can’t do one single thing because I have health insurance for what they did. They told me it would be fixed in 48 hrs And now it’s been almost a week soon it will be the end of the month to where I will have to pay again, but I will still have no insurance because it’s not fixed.

I had a quarterly allowance I was entitled to that I could not use, it was taken from me even though promised by couple of Reps I'd be able to use by the time my card was replaced, I was transferred over & over, hung up on, left on hold, etc. This went on for couple days. Horrible group of reps if you need a simple problem solved!! Still no resolution.

I was authorized for PT for 10 sessions with a specific end date. They MAILED the authorization by USPS. SLOW MAIL. Everything else is sent by email. The authorization arrived 4 days after my start date so I lost out on some days of service. My re-authorization was sent Jan 28. As of Feb 4th it is still not approved. Now I am being told it will take 5-10 days for authorization. What good is PT if they are going to interrupt it every 30 days for 2 weeks? You definitely don't want to bother with this organization. They are useless.

They still sent me an insurance card though leaving me to believe I was covered. I looked back on my account and never saw any charge or trying to charge me though. I went to multiple doctor visits which I have found out that I now need to pay for out of pocket and have several coming up that I have no coverage for. I tried to contact them, and they kept transferring me and not helping me and then they ended up transferring me to a completely different healthcare. I was on hold for 45 minutes and when they answered it wasn't even them. I asked for a manager, and they did that. Needless to say, I feel like they should be held responsible. And ended up on the phone with them for close to 2 hours trying to get them to reprocess a claim as my Primary Insurance but they kept asking the same question (Who is your primary insurance with?). They are more tHan happy to constantly bombard you with calls about having their doctor come and check you out even after telling them you already have a doctor that you go to regularly, but they can’t seem to get their claims paid like they should. Maybe if they had people from America actually answering their calls it would help. Either way though, I would suggest going elsewhere for your insurance.

I have used Humana, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United is by far the worst most impossible insurance company. Their estimates are always drastically off. For instance with Humana or Aetna the estimated cost was usually right or I may owe 30-50 dollars after a procedure. But whatever they quoted for a procedure was usually pretty accurate so I pay and then forget about it. United tells me an x-ray costs a thousand dollars. So I pay it and then they bill me later for another thousand because their estimate was off. Bloodwork is 200 dollars so I pay that and then get bills for 30, 70, 80, 120 for MONTHS because 'their estimate was off'. I never had this issue with any other insurance and IT WAS THE SAME PROVIDERS.
They do not cover cancer screenings or yearly wellness exams. They do not cover any medication without a prior authorization - even cheap generics that you can get for 20 bucks with no insurance. This company kills so many people after taking so much of their check for insurance. I am pretty sure they skew your estimates so you will do the procedure. I would never consent to a 2k x-ray but I did pay for an x-ray with a 1k estimate. Of course they demand I pay the next 1000 and just say the estimate was off. It is a bait and switch - very scummy. Of all the insurance I have had in my nearly 50 years, United was by far the most unethical and just sleazy. I would recommend anyone over them.

So I went online to look up this doctor and the facility he works for is in network so why is he out of network? In April of 2024 I had a facial (nose and cheek) reconstruction surgery after skin cancer. I needed multiple reconstruction surgeries to repair my defect (1st one covered by Kaiser and the next 4 were covered by a production group who filmed the surgeries and had fellow doctors involved to help learn how to reconstruct a very complex case as mine). When I moved to Florida we changed our coverage to United Health Care. UHC approved my claim but kept pushing back on information they needed from a missing W9 that they wanted from the physician, to codes and units for anesthetic etc. I resubmitted and my physician's office resubmitted paperwork multiple times, and we called them at least every 4 weeks for updates.
Today, January 29, 2025 I called to follow up and they now tell me that this reconstruction surgery was not covered by my plan and has been denied. Not only am I out of pocket for this expensive surgery which was provided to me at a discounted cash pay rate by my physician (reconstructive scar revision and fat graph to build up tissue to help with my breathing), I spent days and hours of my time and the physician's office staff time to follow up with everything they dragged out multiple times, on trying to get this claim paid.
They should be embarrassed and ashamed to charge what they do for insurance and then not cover unexpected surgical costs for something like Cancer Reconstruction especially when they didn't even have to pay for most of my surgeries. If this type of cancer reconstruction surgery was not covered, which is ridiculous in itself, the very least they could have done was deny it back in May of 2024 rather than stringing us along for almost a year and make us spend even more money on courier/postage and print costs of sending them a repeat of claim information over and over again. I find them a complete fraud.

I have been in contact with United Healthcare all along and was told all is well, until about year 2 when I noticed they hadn't covered the $1200 portion of the braces. At this point I still have 2 more payments to make and United Healthcare is refusing to cover their portion, giving me different excuses and the excuse of not receiving a referral which they did before my son received his braces since June of 2022. They even had a customer service representative lie to me about sending the $1200 to my dental office which never happened.
It's been a very stressful experience for coverage that has been faithfully deducted from my paycheck and promised coverage never received. I will try to keep this as short as possible. I went on Medicare a little over a year ago. At that time I dropped taking ** (I am type 2 diabetic) due to the cost, and went with Wellcare and my other prescriptions were tier 1 and were no cost. Well over the past year my A1c has gone up and since the out of pocket went down to 2k for Rx, I decided to go back on **. I shopped around for Part D plans last November and found UHC/AARP would be $1400 a year for adding ** back into my regiment of treatment as long as I used the "Optum" mail order (UHC owns Optum). The Other Rx companies (i.e. Wellcare, Cigna, etc...) were $1,800 - 2,000.
For the past month now I have dozens of calls to Optum, UHC, my Doctor, Walgreens. The ** was "unavailable" and they did not know when they would get it, even after I jumped through hoops to get it "pre authorized". I was instructed from Optum that "if" I needed the ** that I should go to my local Pharmacy. I did and Walgreens filled the order in less than 24 hours.... But now I pay more because it is not coming from Optum.... UHC will not credit me the difference even though it was not my choice to go to Walgreens and pay more.... In my 50 plus years of being medically insured I have never spent this much time on Rx as I have in the last month, the customer service was like talking to deer in the headlights. They talk from Computer screen prompts and continually recap and the recap is all wrong.... I will be going back to Wellcare next January 1st and get away from this nightmare of a company.

They are under the same parent company but they don't "speak" with each other. At least now, I was able to identify this early with my other family member and they said the same - luckily it was caught early enough that they are only reimbursing him the $200 premium vs the $7K of premiums! United Healthcare told us that our existing prescriptions would be grandfathered in and would not require preauthorization. The time came for refills, so I contacted them to get everything set up. I am diabetic and working hard to get off of medication (more on this in a minute), but still take two prescriptions. United Healthcare covered the far less expensive diabetes medication without question, but denied a preauthorization (that I wasn't supposed to need) for a second one. They did not give a reason, just told me that I needed to talk to my doctor about treatment alternatives. Being very annoyed, I contacted them and asked for a reason for the denial... get this ...they told me (after paying for one diabetes medication) that there was no proof in my records that I am diabetic.
I notified my doctor, who sent proof and a second preauthorization (that I wasn't supposed to need) was approved after I pointed this out and asked whether or not I needed to elevate the matter. Until last month, I was on a program that has helped me greatly reduce my dependence on medications to control my diabetes via a medically supervised nutrition plan. My last insurance covered it. Had I not switched, it was likely that I would no longer need medications by June of this year. Surprise... United Healthcare doesn't cover it. I dropped them earlier this week for the VA (!) and moved my family to my wife's insurance. It was readily apparent after listening to the drama around the office how things are going to be. I got home and called UHC for an explanation of the chiropractic coverage and what does exactly the copay covers. After more than two hours on the phone, passed around from advocate to supervisors without a clear answer even from the amount of the copay (went from $15 to $50 until finally I was informed it was $20 a visit).
I was then sent out to a person who sells the UHC plans for an explanation. Well, for the copay you get a name. You pay yourself for the consult, the exam and the treatment. What does it cover? Only a manual manipulation of the spine after you paid for the consult, exam and any other “treatment” he does before and after the spinal manual manipulation. I told them I will never use their chiropractors ever again. I am better off just paying the whole thing on my own since many offer free consultation and I could save on the copay.
BTW. My first and last chiropractor visit took less than 15 minutes. I went in at 3 pm and by 3:20 I was in my car. The exam/consultation was a chat of about 5 minutes. He spent 30 seconds rubbing my neck, 15 seconds with a massage vibrator, maybe 10 seconds going over the spine with a little pressure tool and a couple of minutes with a heating pad going in and out of the room to get his tools. When that was done he suggested that I come back again in 3-4 days. That was it! The required test has been denied once again although they have all required documents for her to be approved. Apparently this company is clearly refusing services to patients and their staff is needing serious training. My child is suffering for their inaccurate response and lack of due diligence to research and find that clearly they can see all that has been done send this procedure is the next step to figure out her issue. If this is how they conduct service then clearly we need to find another company that cares about their patients and not their pocket.

I would give 0 stars if I could. In fact, negative stars if it was possible. Has really sucked the joy out of my life. I've been paying for my birth control for like a year, when apparently it was supposed to be covered in full this whole time. It was costing me, a broke college student, $60 a month when it was supposed to be free. I call them, ask hey, why can I get this covered? Yes, they say, it can be covered if we get a PA from your doctor's office. My doctors sends it. United Health Care cancels it. I ask them why they cancel. No, they say, it was your doctor. No, actually, it wasn't, my office shows me that it says it was their end. Then United Healthcare says wait, actually it's because they weren't specific that your medication is for contraceptive purposes. Okay, my doctor changes it, is that better, United Healthcare?
No, it's not, we actually need a letter of exemption for you medication to be free. Why would you need a PA? You don't need that. We never said that. Yes, actually, you did, but it's whatever. I call my doctor's office again. They call the number to get the letter of exemption. Hey, this is the doctor's office. My patient said she needs this for her birth control to be covered. Oh, no, she doesn't need anything. You don't need to give us anything. It should just be covered. You don't need to call us. My doctor asks multiple times. They insist they don't need anything from them.
My doctor's office tells me the news. I call United Healthcare. Hey, so this is what my doctor told me, can it be covered now? Hey, so no, you actually need a PA and a letter of exemption. Then why are they telling my doctor's office differently? Why do I get told something different every time I call? You're not. You need a PA and a letter of exemption. Of course, you don't have to do all that if you are just okay continuing to pay.
I gave up. I am about to see if my college can provide me with birth control at a cheaper cost. Will the change probably make my acne come back and make my hormones a disaster for the next few weeks? Yes, probably. But I would rather risk that than have to deal with this pitiful mistake of an insurance company any more. Thanks for wasting my time and money and adding on to my stress, and either lying of just having no clue what you are saying to me or my doctor. Worst health insurance there is.

I’m a member of United Healthcare for many years. I tried to sign in to my account at UHC Supplement plan N and was asked to enter a code. I received a code over the phone and entered it. The UHC system did not accept it. The representative of Website Technical Support said the system sends a code only as a text to a mobile phone. I’m 81 and I do not have a mobile phone and not going to have it. I can accept a code on my home phone or as email on my PC. Whose “ingenious” idea was to limit old people with use of only mobile phone instead of creating a user-friendly environment? All other companies offer a choice of text, phone call or email. What is the reason to give hard time to people with number of health problems?
Reviewed Jan. 10, 2025
My experience with UHC has been the worst experience I've ever had with customer service. They have several numbers for each department. We applied for a medicare advantage plan on Dec 5 for my M-I-L and when her card did not arrive within 3 weeks we tried calling to see what was going on. Call 1 - (about a week later) I was on the phone for 1 hour an 15 minutes, where I had to conference my MIL in. The agent told us not to worry about the application and that everything should go through and she should be receiving a card soon, and even if the application was not completed, she would still received a card. He also said, check your inbox, you should get an email update. The problem, he told me, was that I should not have applied through Medicare.gov and instead through their website.
Call 2 After roughly another week with no email update, we called again (by this time the enrollment period had ended). After 2 transfers and 1 hour and 5 minutes, they finally found her application. Again I had to conference her in to give permission for us to get a status. They again said it was still in the process and not to worry. They told us a Dr had to certify her condition. They couldn't tell me which doctor they were reaching out to to do that (either her pcp or her specialist). I expressed concern because I didn't remember putting her pcp or specialist on her application. Call 3 (later that week) was 30 minutes, and again with a Sales person, who was unable to help me because they could not find the application, but who also told me not to worry and to call back in a couple of days.
Call 4 (the week of xmas) was over 2 1/2 hours. Still no email update and I was unable to use the software to sign her up for an account (she doesn't have a computer or smart phone). After finding the application and conferencing in my MIL, they were still unable to give me the name of the Dr who they were seeking certification from because in his words "We sent a letter to your mother in law requesting that she get the certification, We don't call doctors, it's her responsibility to provide the certification". This is the first time, I heard that we needed to provide the certification. My MIL received no such letter. We had no idea. She received no email updates. The application process was a black hole. After finally getting this information (what else don't we know), we contacted the Dr. office who then faxed the proof of her condition to UHC (to the fax number they provided me with) on Dec 30.
5th Call (Jan 10) After waiting a little over a weeks (Jan 10) (we expected a delay to holidays) I called UHC to get the status of the application. It had been denied and they could not tell me why despite my Husband being POA. I spent 1 hour and 12 minutes on the phone and was disconnected twice. My husband spent 45 minutes on the phone with them and was disconnected once.
As a result, we will need to go through the application process again which means she does not have drug coverage this month. She is on a tier 3 life saving drugs and we can't afford to wait another month of uncertainty. Do they care that their incompetence is life-threatening? The "don't worry" attitude is really condescending. The mixed messages, lack of clear instruction and changing stories every time we call make me not trust this company at all. As an aside. I get my health insurance through my company. This year they switched from Aetna to UHC. I opted to go onto my husband's health care instead and very glad that I did. I hope I never have to choose UHC in the future because of a job.

I have yet to only have to pay my copay for an appointment with UHC, whether or not the doctor is in network. And in network doctor's appointment that is supposed to cost me $70 has yet to cost me less than 100. And I pay for all of my lab work, which is a lot if you have chronic health issues and need your lab drawn at every appointment. If you call the company themselves, they are no help and honestly, I am not surprised about what happened to the CEO. They run a company based on denying the services that people are paying them to provide and show that they do not care about human lives at all.
Would avoid at all cost. It is literally the worst insurance I’ve ever had in my entire life. Unfortunately it’s also the only insurance my employer provides. I am stuck, knowing that my health issues will eventually kill me because I can’t afford to have them treated and the health insurance that I’m paying thousands of dollars for a year is basically inaccessible to me.

Made sure all my doctors and meds were covered and they were. On Jan 3, 2025 received a letter stating my Primary Care Provider in which I have been going to for almost 30 years their current contract will be ending as of Feb 15, 2025. I called them to complain about this and all they wanted to do is give me a new provider. I don't want a new provider I want to stay with who I have. I am comfortable with them they know my history. This is so wrong for them to do this with Seniors.
I guess UHC is not making a good enough profit on them for the CEOs to fill their pockets with more money. This is so wrong. Please renew the contract with Community Care Physicians so I can continue to see my doctors. If I had known they would do this when I first enrolled I would have picked a different insurance. I am hoping they make good on renewing the contract so I can continue to see my doctor and be able to get my monthly meds. How can they be so heartless to seniors enrolled with them. 1) They will require you to get a pre-authorization for many medications (some basic) that have never needed pre-auths under other insurers.
2) They deny almost everything. They wouldn't give me one basic med I'd been on for 15 yrs without getting a pre-auth (Dr was even confused). They also denied my generic maintenance medication I take for a chronic condition that is the standard of care for that disease and is not experimental. Wound up needing to go through a non profit (after 6 months fighting them) to obtain my meds despite paying them twice as much in premiums as other insurers (none of which have ever denied that medication).
3) Everyone I work with has had such a negative experience with United and we all complained to our employer/HR so much that thankfully we won't be using them again this year.
Final thoughts: I've had health insurance with many of the big health insurers and United is by far the most predatory and dangerous. I got lucky, others may not. Stay away!

I’m very dissatisfied with UNITED HEALTHCARE as I have been a member since 2021 as a senior citizen under the Advantage plan. More recently, they have gouged their co-pay amounts to out of proportion. And as a senior citizen cost is of the essence. I disenrolled my plan and went to another carrier effective January this year... However, while I was still under the enrollment with UNITED HEALTHCARE in November, I was given a house-called visit which was told after that visit I would be a given an amount of $75 that could be used through the member I.d card that could be used to make certain purchases at specific locations.
I noticed the member ID card which is referred to as a U card did not have a strip on the back so that it could be used to make purchases. When I brought this to the agent’s attention, she said, just swipe it that it would work. Well, it didn’t. I called and complained and was told that says January 1. I was no longer with UNITED HEALTHCARE that they would not honor the $75 amount that was promised before the transition had been made to the new plan. So needless to say, I am completely dissatisfied, which is why I decided to change medical carriers to begin with. And this situation just adds to it. My providers have attempted to get prior approvals, which was not required before September, but have had a horrible time wading through the process. I have contacted United Healthcare advocates, the majority are very wonderful - and yes, I have heard the stories of the recordings of advocates hanging up and laughing for people asking for help. I have appealed and have denials overturned - and yes, it is a battle of attrition, as only 10% of people will appeal the first denial, I've had to do multiple appeals to get a denial overturned.
And now, I not only have to appeal with United Healthcare, going through their medical board, having denial overturned, then the information is not communicated to Optum, but on the slimmest of chances - and I mean really slim chance, then the prior authorization is denied by Optum's medical board or possibly AI. Since I received my Medicare 2.5 cost of living notice starting January 2025 I found out I'm paying $185 a month which has left me about $20 to my cost of living. I will drop this as soon as I can. I usually end of paying for procedures myself because of denials. This includes dental especially. Check into other options first. I wish I had. I now stay away from the medical not trusting procedures will be actually covered. They are the masters of denials. I know from experience.

I thought I had United Health Medicare Advantage as my Medicare provider. I was wrong. Wellmed is who administers the program in our area. They closed the clinic 2.8 miles away and assigned me to one 16 miles away. It was only open one day a week. I have a hip that is causing me a level 7-8 pain. The pain clinic ordered an MRI and it was denied by a 3rd party called Evicore. I never received the notification of denial. I fought with United Health, Wellmed and Evicore for two months over all this and was told the MRI was not and would not be approved.
I have been to the local hospital 3 times with this. I was told the last time I went that I would be classified as a "frequent flyer" meaning I was there for the drugs. My primary care physician said this was a common practice since the Opioid Pandemic. It all comes down to this: I get to live with the severe level of pain that is debilitating because UHC, Wellmed or whomever this company is will not cover the MRI. I have reached the end of the pain meds and was told I could not have more because of their policies over pain meds.

At this point, it is seriously cheaper to pay cash for everything than mention being covered by this company.
