I have had Nationwide for over 20 years. I like it, but the rates seem rather high compared to TV ads of other carriers. I would try to compare, and consider leaving for a cheaper company, but I've been quite happy with the service that I've received from Nationwide, so for now, I'll keep Nationwide.

My insurance company has been pretty good. I don't really wreck my car up or anything, and they wouldn't replace a smashed headlight for me, but besides that I've had little problems. The claim was handled professionally, in a caring manner, and I received compensation for the damages promptly. All paperwork, details were handled by Nationwide with little effort on my part. I have been with Nationwide Ins for over 20 years. I have never had to file a claim with them so I can't speak to how that experience would be. I do know that when my car was broken into they were out here to look at it within hours. They arranged to have my seat fixed at a reasonable rate, I didn't fix the seat or collect money but I was more than happy with how it was handled. I have had to use their roadside assistance, they are always concerned with my safety, and they have an excellent follow up service. I don't have or need a local agent, although I could. I have always used their national number, each rep or agent has always been professional, and more than helpful. I would highly recommend them... This is a total scam - save yourself the time and instead spend your time just shopping for a better insurance company. The initial few weeks it shows great discounts to get you to stay with it and then the discounts drop like a rock the last weeks based on nothing! I don't think there is any actuarial analysis performed on the data - the discount and the driving truly seem to have no correlation. They don't analyze the data to remove abnormalities and there is no way to have them remove hard braking or fast accelerations of others, such as when your car is in the shop or in the hands of a valet. Abysmal program - save yourself the trouble!

Nationwide paid out the lowest amount on my claim with no reasonable explanation as to why. Other companies use some kind of formula and reputable companies to get their numbers for payouts on claims. Example's NADA, KBB, AUTO TRADER. Nationwide does not. They use whoever will give them the lowest numbers. In my case NADA + KBB + AUTO TRADER+ a LEXUS DEALER + A TOYOTA DEALER all reputable resources came in value wise for my vehicle around $5000. The 2 rock lots that Nationwide used were the 2 lowest available. Around $3500.
Nationwide used both of these disreputable companies instead of the reputable companies that are used to replace a vehicle with. Here's the deal, do consumers or banks and credit unions use the reputable companies I listed when loaning $ and replacing a vehicle or do they use these to rock lots? Exactly! So then I went to WWW and started doing research on Nationwide as far as homeowners insurance claims are concerned and they have a terrible reputation on payout of claims there as well. In hindsight I wish I would of researched this terrible company first instead of just being part of the nation as sell on TV. Please research before using!

Nationwide is a complete joke!!! When you file a claim with them they give you the third degree because your policy is new... Nothing but belittling and total harassment if you ask me. I was asked today for my phone records as to when I called 911 at the time of my wreck... So do you not believe me??? ALSO I am paying for rental coverage and am being denied of that because the accident is "under investigation." Well, I am sorry that the city police were too busy to come out with red and blue lights and make it all dramatic for you Nationwide. I am sure other people were being helped.
If it satisfies you in ANY WAY, please feel free to call dispatch and hear the recording of us saying that "we live less than a mile away, I think we can drive it home" then was told by the dispatcher to "come into the police station tomorrow and file an incident report and mail it to the Kentucky state police." But apparently because there were no witnesses other than the neighbor lady we stopped to get a flashlight from we are guilty until proven innocent.
Awful funny how someone with health insurance can have an effective change date of 12/1/2015... fall on 12/1/2015... and not get hounded about when she fell, if there were any witnesses, or what insurance will deny. THIS IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER BEEN TREATED BY AN INSURANCE COMPANY!!! And the sad thing is we haven't ever made a claim on anything. Clean driving records!!! This is definitely not how you should treat your customers!!!

Weeks later we get a letter from NC DMV. We are being fined for not having insurance coverage for two days. Called Nationwide and they said they'd look into it and call us back. To make a long story short they never called back so we called the next day and was told that had we mentioned this to them back when it first happened they could have took care of this for us.
We had no idea that we were going to be fined. Nationwide said they'd look into it again to see what they can do but I bet they don't do anything. In the meantime our policy just renewed and the state of North Carolina allows insurance companies to charge a fee if you cancel your policy before the renewal date. You can bet your backside that I'll have another insurance company lined up and will fire Nationwide during our renewal period. They should change their jingle to Nationwide, screw you blind.

Fast forward 3 months later, I receive a letter from them staying they OVERPAID my settlement and now they would like me to pay back $2,500! I asked how in the world does a mistake of that magnitude even happen first of all, and how did it go unnoticed for so long?! All they would say was "It was probably a typographical mistake, it's just human error." That's one hell of a mistake! This being my first car accident, I had no idea to even look for such mistakes! My ignorance is no match for their incompetence - I am definitely changing companies! Despite never having issues with them prior, a $2,500 mistake is unforgivable! I was dealing with the Newport News, VA Nationwide office, originally regarding homeowners insurance, and later car insurance. They promised me the lowest rates. Well, I later learned, our home was under-insured. They encouraged me to have them cover my car in order to get even better rates. When I changed my auto policy to Nationwide, I was told repeatedly that if my husband also changed to Nationwide, the cost to insure my car would decrease even further.
In July, my husband contacted them to add his car to the policy. We were quoted one great rate. Then we received a bill showing that our car insurance INCREASED. Yes, MY insurance went up. When I called the Nationwide office, they told me that they couldn't help it -- Virginia's insurance rates went up (they didn't know that three days earlier?!). Nationwide main office said the rates went up because we weren't using some auto-pay program. Right hand isn't talking to the left hand. I told the local office that we were canceling all of our insurance as of August 1 and finding another company -- and I told them not to process my husband's addition.
We then arrange get different insurance from another company. That's when we were told that Nationwide had under-insured our home. Next, I get a $25 bill from Nationwide for so-called coverage for the first couple of weeks in August. I am told that I must prove that I had coverage through another company or pay the bill (since when is Nationwide the state, the DMV, or the law?!). I sent them proof and believe the issue is over.
Next, we receive a $44 bill from a COLLECTION agency. When I contact Nationwide, this time I'm told this is what is due on coverage for my husband's policy -- a policy we canceled almost immediately upon ordering it. Same story: The burden of proof is on us -- WE must provide Nationwide with proof that we had coverage or else pay the bill. They didn't even have the decency to send us a bill -- they sent this false invoice directly to a collection agency. What a horribly unethical company that PUNISHES its customers when you cancel.

I had a total loss on my car after the flood on October 4th in Myrtle Beach, SC. My policy with Nationwide Car Insurance had Comprehensive included, so I made a claim the very first day and tried to use the road assistance service offered by Nationwide. After calling many times, I learned that they were all busy and could not tow my car from the flooded road. Same thing next day when the road was open. So I had to pay to tow my car to the dealership, Sparks Toyota, in Myrtle Beach. On Tuesday Oct 6, I got a call from the adjuster asking for permission to take my car to Columbia which I gave right away. I called Sparks Toyota store, where my car was, and told them that I gave permission for the insurance company to take my car. Sparks Toyota got a call from Nationwide saying they would pick the car up.
It has been 9 days since I made the claim on Oct 4. Today Oct 13, I finally got a call from Mrs. Emily **, the adjuster, after I have been trying to contact her for days, leaving many messages, and hearing a machine asking for me to leave my claim number and phone. Mrs. Emily **, the same adjuster, said that I never gave permission for Nationwide to take my car for appraisal and that my car is still at Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach. Then she said the fail was from Sparks Toyota that refused to release my car which I know it is a lie because I have just talked to them. Then, I heard a lot of excuses from Nationwide saying that it was a big flood and the company is busy.
I was in the middle of the flood and I know very well how bad it was. It is for events like that we pay for insurance, so there is no excuse for not doing your job. I can't afford renting another week of car rental and I am in risk of losing my job since I can't go to work if I don't have a car. Run from Nationwide, it is not on your side when you need it!

The local agent flat out lied, then backtracked and spun out more ridiculous reasoning. Told me I was legally bound to continue to pay NW after cancellation - then said in her 25 years as an agent, she has NEVER had a client cancel. I am 27 years old and had to watch a woman twice my age pretend to be a blithering idiot to try to avoid a refund. Being as she had NEVER had a cancellation, she could not cancel, much less refund my policy.
Finally, after I filed a complaint, I got a $25 refund of a $220 down payment and $120 monthly paid together. Basically, I paid them $340 for one month of auto, cancelled after finding a better rate two days later, and they would only give me 25 back after extensive effort on my part. I recently had Nationwide insurance but changed to another company after it was time to renew my 6 month policy and found a cheaper rate. I was backing out of a parking lot and bumped into a metal pole by accident. Nationwide had an in-network repair shop I assume they are partnered with but does excellent body shop due to friends having their cars fixed there. Nationwide had my car towed to the shop which I had towing and rental insurance. The body shop issued me a repair estimate but I would have a $500 dollar deductible and the repairs were $1200 even though the car had some minor previous bumper damage. Nationwide paid my claim as soon as the repairs were completed.
The next morning Enterprise picked me up and handled the scheduling for my rental. I owned a 2012 ford focus, I was given a 2015 Camry for about 10 days which is how long the repairs took. Nationwide only agreed to pay for 7 days even though I had $900 rental insurance. I ended up coming out of the pocket $104 for the rental which really pissed me off seeing how the car was not ready from the body shop. At no fault of my own. Only bad thing I can say about them had Nationwide for 3 years, no claims.
They decided when it came time to renew they up my monthly payment by $57 a month for minor bumper damage not involving another vehicle. I had never been in an accident the seven years I have been driving. Found a quote paying about $35 less than what I was before my accident. Just always remember to shop around and keep rental coverage and towing on your car which only cost about an extra $9 dollars a month, but saved me about $500.

We did receive a text message from the towing company saying we will be picked up at 1 am even though my father waited from 7 pm to 11 pm already. Then I call and complain again. We should not be at the bottom of list after waiting 4 hours already. So then she said "oh you're not safe? We are gonna call the police." After I told her not to since they aren't going to pay for the towing, she hung up on me and said she was calling police. I called the claims number and was almost immediately on the line with an actual person, I had no wait time at all. It then took about five minutes for me to give them all the information to submit my claim. I had to email them a few documents later that day, but the whole process was just amazingly easy. That was less than 24 hours ago, and I just got an email from the claims agent that she transferred the money into my bank account. The whole point of having insurance is that you're buying peace of mind. With Nationwide, I am confident that, if something happens, they'll take care of it for me promptly and professionally.

Signed up with Nationwide Insurance 6 months ago when I bought a new car. I did the safe driver program with them with the electronic device attached to the car. At the end of that it said I would get 6% on one car and 12% on the other. When I got my renewal, my bill went up over 75.00 a year. Called them and was told this was due to my wife having a birthday and 'one of you is older, and one is now younger' no tickets, or infractions of any type! I told them this was ridiculous but was told they couldn't change the price.

I came over to Nationwide after progressive jacked up insurance rate due to adding young drivers. I've been with them for 5 years. Never had a claim with them. My issue is I was out of town, knew my homeowner's bill was due, tried to pay it and there was no pay my bill button. When I got home there was a postcard from my agent saying "please call me about your homeowner's policy..." I called her last Saturday. It's now next Sunday and still no return call. Getting the office answering machine I called the general 800 number because I didn't want a lapse in coverage. The agent I spoke with said "maybe it was an online problem". I said "I doubted it due to the postcard I received". She looked at everything said it all looked fine and I paid her over the phone.
A week later I go to pay one of my car insurance policy same issue! I have 5 cars and two auto policies. One said I wasn't due to pay till next month which I knew was wrong the other wouldn't let me pay... So phone agent says one policy was cancelled due to non payment. I said "you are screwing up not me. I know when my bills are due and pay them on time". He reinstated it after I paid by phone. I said "this is unacceptable that I've had to call you two times this month". After hanging up I went back to progressive car insurance effective next month - it will be a bit less and house a bit more so it evens out. Progressive is streamlined. I have used them for car accident. It was handled well and quickly. You only know how good an insurance company is when you need to use them.

After my policy had expired, I have received numerous calls from a collection agency, with threats of collecting a debt. I did not owe the last payment since my policy was cancelled. Now they have reported it on my credit report. Take my advice: use another company for any insurance. Do not use nationwide.

My policy cancelled Monday at 12:01 am due to nonpayment. In my error, I had completely forgot the payment and I remembered tonight while I was in the grocery store. I immediately called Nationwide and spoke with a representative named Bryan. Bryan offered to reinstate my policy for $116.99 (late payment plus the next months payment).
After telling me the price and setting up to take my payment he adds that there will now be a one day lapse in coverage. I asked him what that meant for me and if that would be a permanent mark on my insurance record. He said it would be on my insurance record and there would be a surcharge of 5% on my premium. He then asked me to briefly hold while he checked his answer. He came back with the same response and I asked if he was sure. He said yes. I said normally a policy will reinstate back to the original cancellation date if there are no accidents, losses or violations, of which I had none. We went back and forth and it wound up that he had no explanation as to why it was different in my cases than the cases that had a reversal back to the original cancellation date. I asked to speak to a supervisor.
After holding for five minutes he told me a supervisor (research analyst) was unavailable and would call me back once they became available. Meanwhile I am sitting in the grocery store parking lot. I decided to call another insurance company, who was also not understanding why there would a lapse of one day if the policy was reinstated. Five minutes into my quote a supervisor (research analyst), Nathan calls me, so I leave my call with the other insurance company to speak with Nationwide once again.
I explain the situation and I reiterate to Nathan what I had said to Bryan. I advised him that it made no sense, to have a 5% policy surcharge for a one day lapse. The $116.99 they are charging me covers the full late month plus the full next month! Nathan basically says unless it's a company error there would be a lapse. He said I was actually available for reinstatement up until August 19th. I asked if he could verify the amount of the surcharge and if that would be on my insurance record. While giggling, Nathan advised me that he is just in a supervisor position and leads people and doesn't normally work on the phones and would have to research that. I press him on the issue on whether it would be on my permanent record and he says a one day lapse would have little if any effect on my policy premium even if I were to get a quote with another insurance company.
I am wondering how he would know this, if he didn't even know about the surcharge in the first place. I then ask him to take the payment to reinstate the policy, God forbid I drove home from the grocery store and something happened I did not want to be without coverage. He giggles again and says he's not familiar with the payment systems. I tell him he can transfer me to someone who is and he says he is on a different phone system than the representatives and unable to. He eventually figures out how to take my payment and asks me I want a receipt e-mailed. He then has trouble doing that as well. He ends up e-mailing me a screenshot of his payment screen from Nationwide's billing system instead of the standard receipt.
Throughout this whole transaction I felt that I was dealing with inept representatives who were unconcerned, unknowledgeable, and I felt to some extent that they took light of my predicament. I did not feel confident that my payment was going to go through properly to reinstate my policy when I was speaking to someone who was supposed to be a supervisor. There was no reasoning for not backdating my reinstatement and it was completely ridiculous that I would be charged a surcharge when I was paying the full amount owed for the previous and current months. After being a customer for 7 years, I am beyond disappointed with Nationwide and I will be switching my auto insurance carrier asap.

Nationwide has continuously refused to fairly handle or resolve my claim. I was involved in an accident over a week ago (June 23, 2015). They have received all of the evidence that is needed to timely investigate and resolve liability in my favor. They are stating that a party to the loss is biased and will not accept her statement that she felt one impact, placing their insured 100% at fault for the loss. I have reasonably waited and provided everything they have asked for regarding evidence and I have even mitigated my own loss of use.
The facts of the accident are that the front vehicle (Jeep) had stopped suddenly. I used proper evasive action, by braking and swerving right to avoid hitting the front vehicle. I had come to a complete stop and been stopped for at least 10 seconds, when Nationwide (Chrysler) rear-ended me pushing me (Volkswagen) into the front vehicle. The Jeep stated to Nationwide, that they felt one impact, but did not see Nationwide actually hit my vehicle.
As you can see the damages completely validate my facts of the accident. The Jeep damages are very minor. If I had hit her first as Nationwide implies the damages would be much worse than a crack in the bumper and scuff marks. The damages to the front of my vehicle are to the left front and minimal, were as the damages on the rear cover the entire back end. The rear damage proves that Nationwide's insured did not use any evasive action. As you can see the entire front of the Nationwide vehicle is heavily damaged. I feel that Nationwide's handling of this claim would fall under the Texas Unfair Claims Statutes and Regulations 541.060 Unfair Settlement Practices (2) failing to attempt in good faith to effectuate a prompt, fair, and equitable settlement of: (A) a claim with respect to which the insurer's liability has become reasonably clear.
As you can tell with the evidence supplied, Nationwide's liability is more than reasonably clear. The adjuster ** and his manager, ** have both failed to handle my claim fairly. They even consider the Jeep who is a party to the claim, a biased witness. I wonder how a jury would feel about that. I would think any jury of my peers would see favorably to my plea that I will be making if no response is made. At this time I am demanding that this covered loss be paid within the next 7 days. My damages are well within the Nationwide's property damage limits and this demand is more than reasonable. I am willing to give a full and final release of the property damage and loss of use at this time. This is notice that if I have no response by July 07, I will be seeking counsel and urging my counsel to file suit against Mr. **. In turn, I would be more than happy to testify on Mr. **'s behalf when he litigates Nationwide for bad faith.

I kindly asked if I could pay what was owed if they would waive the $30 late fee as it was not my fault. I also checked the mobile app! Nothing due! The woman told me they never waive the fee. On April 16, 2015 at approximately 1:56 pm my daughter and my granddaughter were in Fenton Missouri. My daughter was on Gravois Bluff Blvd in the left lane (it's a four lane street). Their client who was from out of state was on Gravois Bluff Plaza Blvd, a street that comes out onto Gravois Bluff Blvd. She was at a stop sign which also stated below the stop sign in big letters crossing traffic (traffics on Gravois Bluff Blvd), DOES NOT STOP. Their client in a white 2010 minivan pull out and hit my daughter who was driving her red 2006 minivan in the front drivers fender pushing the fender back into the driver door and hitting my daughter hard enough to knock her across the outside lane and up onto the curb .
As soon as the St. Louis County police arrived their client, the officer states said she had collided with my daughter. The accident report reads that their client was at fault and also states that their client admit hitting my daughter. Remember she--their client had a stop sign that also stated cleared that the traffic on Gravois Bluff Blvd does not stop, they have the right of way. Under normal circumstances with nearly any other auto insurance company there would be no trouble hands down with a police report stating the person who hit you with the front of their auto. Their insurance would arrange for a adjuster to estimate the damages, get you a rental to drive, cover any medical ( my daughter and granddaughter were sore the next day from being hit by their client). But that's not what happen. 30 days went by nothing done said they were waiting on the police report.
My daughter had her insurance agent fax Nationwide's people a copy of the police report showing their client to be at fault. The police officer himself states that their client admitted guilt, the damage done to my daughters van show she was ran into, and let's not forget their client had a stop sign warning her that traffic on the street my daughter was on (Gravois Bluff Blvd) DOES NOT STOP. All this you'd think Nationwide Insurance would immediately take care of the damages their client made. 60 days came and went with several contacts to Nationwide's adjuster who said he was investigating my daughter's claim. Now my daughter only had liability coverage on her van, she had drop the full coverage so she could afford auto insurance on her 17 year old daughter to be able to drive, so my daughters insurance wouldn't get involved.
In May I got involved due to the unfair behavior of Nationwide's representatives. The Nationwide adjuster told my daughter in May that their client was now changing her story and said she hadn't even spoken to the officers and stated what he put in his report. She is also saying my daughter was not in the left land (the inside lane) but that she was in the right lane and that my daughter hit her. The adjuster told my daughter Nationwide was going to give their client a week to get the police report changed to state my daughter was at fault. I told my daughter to get a hold of that St. Louis county officer and let him know what Nationwide had said about getting his report changed. My daughter got a hold of the officer. He stated they can't do that. That would be a felony. It's against the law to change that report.
Nationwide's boss to the adjuster stated to me that they're going to go with what their client is saying regardless what the police report states which they have a copy of, regardless their client had a stop sign, and regardless what the damage on my daughters van indicates. They told us unless we have an individual come forward who will state they witnessed my daughter's van getting hit by their client they won't pay off. I said "do we have to sue you and your client in order to get a settlement?" He said "do what you have to do."
Presently at the moment am running ads that state "We Need Your Help if you witness an accident" -- then the details am looking into putting up a 4 foot by 8 foot sign with this hold thing stated and placing it at that intersection to try and find a witness. Then we're going to file sue against Nationwide and their client for damages. Beware of Nationwide Auto Insurance if you're ever involved in an accident. Make sure you have witnesses. Get their names, addresses, and phone numbers. You'll most likely need them.

This was my first accident, so I was kind of clueless on the games these insurance companies play. I brought my vehicle in to the shop they suggested. They gave me an estimate of around $3500 minus by deductible of course. I thought the damages were more, so I brought it to my mechanic. And as I thought, the damages were more. I called my rep and he Made it clear that they won't be increasing the check. Then he also stated that someone will be calling me, and I needed to make sure that I have the shops name when they call.
I'm waiting for this call, but received an email instead, stating that the check was mailed. How are they going to mail me a check if they didn't have the shop's name... I thought to myself. The check was so called mailed on the 13th of May. It's 4 days to a month since he mailed the check. One whole month for a small ass check... that's not going to cover the cost to repair my vehicle. The account, while I had access, did not show as a pending deposit or transaction per their website. Inadvertently deposited the money again since it was not showing as being deposited in the acct. Two days later my acct is frozen, funds are frozen, unable to set up direct deposit, NOTHING as they want to "verify my identity" via mail or e-mail first. I send ALL information they request, the same day.
A week later, no response. I call, still unable to verify my identity, PLUS, they say that I bounced a check because I wrote a bad check. Apparently they got both checks just didn't SHOW them as pending deposits. So, I call again, my acct will be on hold for an additional 10 days due to the bad check so I said "Just close the acct and send me my money," but they can't do that until the 10 days are up which will be 4/28/15 and then it will take another 7-10 business days to cut me a check and send it to me. So, now it's 5/8/2015 and I call to find out what is going on and I'm told that it was to be closed on 5/1/15 but it hasn't happened and she will have to find out but not sure when she will be able to get an answer for me... What??? She goes on to tell me that they would have to close this acct and see if they could open another acct for me since the initial acct had a bad check on it... what???
The reason why is because the acct that I had opened was linked to an incentive acct. Had I kept the acct open for 6 months, I would have been paid $200, now why would they want to treat me decent and pay out $200, like that is a lot of more money for them. For one, I have had an acct with them for about a month, that has been frozen for the entire time except for about 2 days... Why would I want to keep an acct with a bank like that??? Since I have had such a difficult time with this bank and have been dealing with the snowball effect of other issues ever since, with bills, rent, having to open an acct with another bank that was completely painless and just down the street but delayed, multiple calls... Nationwide SUCKS!!! If I could give negative stars, I most certainly would!!!

I have been with nationwide since I was 16. In the last five months my policy has been canceled twice. The only way I found out it was a notification from the county I live in stating that I was uninsured. When I called I was told that it was my fault because they had sent me a letter. I never got the letter. Then I went in and paid 300 on my policy. Not once staying that it was canceled. I could have done something then if I had known. They will not help you once you complain. And of course I was lied to about the whole thing. Today is my wedding anniversary by the way. And that's when I was notified. I will not ever go through this company again.

Someone with Nationwide Insurance ran into my car at the end of October 2014. They said that they want to talk to their person first, but they don't know how to get ahold of her. After 3 months, they gave up and said that they'll pay me. After 3 months of nagging them, they finally sent me the check. It shouldn't take 6 months for them to sort this out...

I recently got my SUV totalled out due to vandalism. I get another car and they tell me that I was unable to place my new vehicle on my policy because my policy was at risk. "Too many accidents have happened to your policy." Previously my brother's truck was vandalized. I feel it is not my fault that stupid people make stupid choices in life and they want to mess up other people's things. I can't control what stupid people in this world do on day to day basis this is why I "THOUGHT" I was buying one of the best insurance policies.
When it comes down to things Nationwide is not on anyone's side. They do not take care of their customer like they promise and to add more to the story they took a whole month and a half to pay my financial & myself out for my SUV. Other insurance agencies do not take that long. I hope somebody is reading this please take the time to investigate and ask all questions when choosing the right insurance for you and your family. Nationwide is not a strong company that support their logo and their customer service is horrible. And yes I'm upset because I pay $300 + for insurance and yes I feel that I should have been treated better than what they treated me.
Yes I pay $300 for insurance just so that I don't have to go through the B.S. then they had the nerves to ask me will I renew my policy. Keep in mind they would not let me add my new car to my policy. I told them "HECK NO". Why would I renew my policy with your company and you won't let me add on my new car? Please somebody tell me if that makes any sense? People choose whom ever you want but just ask all the questions and read the reviews because if people are saying goes the same thing about the company something must be true and you need to look into it because it just might happen to you. I would not recommend Nationwide to my most hated enemy.

I contacted nationwide to start up a policy on my cargo work van in Jan 2015. Added a car to the policy about a month later and received an email stating that they were canceling my policy on April 1st 2015 for an over-sized vehicle. I contacted the nationwide about this and they said I had a 15 passenger van and it never should have been on the policy. This van has never had a window in the back at all or seats it's solely for work only. I'm a carpenter, I explained I don't haul people around in my cargo van on top of all of my tools in the back. I could barely get into it myself. The agent told me that if I had even gotten into an accident that it wouldn't had been covered by nationwide.
I didn't write the policy or start it, they did and still to this day after they've my down payment and a few months of money leave me scrambling to obtain other insurance. They have the nerve to keep sending me bills saying that I still owe on the policy. They won't resolve this. Don't get ripped off by nationwide look elsewhere for insurance.

Every time when I call customer care, they will say apologies and assure me that they will fix in next 5 business days, that's it. Again after 15 days if you call them they will say somehow it missed and apologies and fix it - this same story happening from past 6 months and still continuing. One more thing is these guys will not have coordination between their departments and in result customer will suffer a lot. PLEASE NEVER EVER CHOOSE NATIONWIDE FOR INSURANCE.

I have had a horrible experience with this company. Not only have I had to call over 15 times (four just to get them to send a single email) but the first guy to set up my account messed it up so bad that no one could figure out how to fix it. Now with my rewritten policy that I had to call 6 times just to get them to do, they have found more mistakes and I can't even get a straight answer as to what was really wrong with it since the next person I talk to gives me completely different answers.
When I called the local agents to get in-person assistance with filling out the paperwork and looking over the policy since it's so messed up, one never called me back and the other told me there was nothing he could do. You would think that 6 years of coverage with no tickets or accidents would serve for something. I would never recommend this company and know of other members who are considering getting a new provider based off of my horrible experience.

I recently received my income tax money. I wanted to start the year off right. I signed up for Nationwide Insurance and paid three months up. My physical address is the family home. I don't have a deed, light bill etc. with my name on it, so Nationwide cancelled my policy because they claimed I didn't have a good garaging address. To make a long story short I paid 3 months up, and was due a refund. They charged me for the cancelled policy, and I still had a refund balance due to me. I paid on my debit card. It's been over a month and I still hadn't received my money. I'm tempted to get an attorney, because it's the principle. Give me my money. They told me it would take 7 to 10 days to come in the mail. GTFOH we are in the United States, why should it take that long. Nationwide sucks.

I recently have had a bad run in with Nationwide insurance. I have been with Nationwide insurance since 2011 and have never missed a payment or had a lapse in insurance with them. I have recently been going through a divorce and had to open a new bank account in just my name. One month I had to push my payment back due to the way my paychecks fell and I did not want my payment to bounce nor did I want a lapse in insurance coverage. In order to do so I contacted the company and was granted an extension to my account but this would cancel out my automatic withdraw therefore I would have to call in every month and make my monthly payment.
Like I said this was anywhere from 8 months to a year that I have been calling in and making my payments on the 27th of each month. I made a payment in Jan, and then Feb there was several communications between me and the reps at Nationwide insurance. I contacted them numerous times to obtain copy of my insurance cards for my employer. I am assuming that with frequent contacts somehow the subject of payment was never brought up for the month of Feb. Do I take partial responsibility for the lapse? Yes I do. However like mentioned above I was in contact with them on several occasions throughout the month of March. One was to file a claim for a cracked windshield (which they covered on March 8th).
I contacted Nationwide this am to make my payment (there is a 10 day window I believe it is for payment after due date) and I was informed that my insurance policy was canceled due to non payment. I was so upset that I was not aware of this and I was certain that I made my payment to them (I knew I had been in contact with them several times in the last few weeks). However due to my non payment it was canceled. Nationwide stated that they sent me a mailed letter stating that if it was not paid by the 22nd it would be canceled (I don't have the letter, and I have paperless with them so again not sure what happened).
You would think with numerous conversations in the last month a rep would have said: "Mrs. **, your payment has not been processed this month. Would you like to go ahead and take care of that while we are on the phone??" (Mind you I was calling for Proof of insurance). No never once was that brought up in conversation (again I do take partial responsibility for this but again like I said I had called in numerous times to their company). I spoke with the agent on several different times today and was informed that even though my car was insured up until March 22nd that at time of non payment it was back dated that to my renewal date of 2/17/2015 and is now logged that I have been uninsured since 2/17/2015.
I tried to reopen a new policy with them first thing this AM and was told that instead of a $155 a month payment I was now going to have to pay $330 a month. (WHAT!!!) "Well mam you have not had insurance since 2/17/2015." Which I then asked, "If I would have been in an accident on 3/21/2015 would my car have been covered?" Their response was yes! "So technically I had insurance coverage up until 3/22/15 correct?" "Yes mam. But when it was not paid it was backdated to the 2/17." So to me this is just a way for them to increase the rates and obtain more money. I believe this because according to all the companies I called today to try and obtain insurance there is 3 windows for insurance, (currently insured, 1-30 days no insurance, 30 days or more no insurance). This all affects your initial payment and your monthly premium. CRAZY!!
Another insurance company suggested that I give Nationwide one more attempt and try to get them to open a new policy with stating that I did not have insurance since 3-22-15 since they have complete payment history and all documentation noted. So I did this and they were unwilling to work with me at all. Like I said I have been a loyal customer to them for since 2011 and never missed a payment and have only filed one accident claim that was not even with me. It was with my soon to be ex husband. They were unwilling to work with me in any way shape or form to open a new policy with me at a lower rate (Every insurance company I spoke with today stated that due to the over 30 day lapse in insurance was why I had to pay such a high premium when technically there was only a 7 day lapse).
I feel that this was very poor customer service and I feel that they do not value their customers at all. I was able to find an insurance company today that was very helpful and very kind to assist in getting me the lowest rated that they could. I am now paying an extra $62 dollars a month as apposed to an additional $145.00 a month that Nationwide was quoting me. I will willingly pay the extra $62 a month to someone else who will appreciate and try to help me as a customer. I am very disappointed in the customer service with Nationwide. A 4 year customer with 1 payment interruption was not worth working something out with. I hope that nobody else has to experience this poor customer service with them ever again.

I had been a long time customer, not due to the service, but because it was easier to stay with them than to shop around. Twice when I gave my account info for automatic monthly payments, they never put in their system so my policy cancelled and I had to pay the entire policy upfront DUE TO THEIR MISTAKE. The 3rd time I renewed, I owed $61 that was either supposed to be forgiven or included in new policy since they cannot start a new policy when a balance is owed. After about 5 months, I cancelled insurance because Geico was much cheaper. NATIONSTAR SENT ME A REFUND CHECK in Nov 2013. So I just checked my credit today and there is a collection agency trying to collect $61 on Nationwide's behalf.
After a few hours on the phone with Nationwide, they claim it was a balance owed from an older policy that they missed. They gave me excuse after excuse as to why they never called about the balance or why they gave me a new policy without having me pay this supposed $61 balance. I told them I would pay if they contacted the collection agency to remove the reporting from my credit report but again, excuses as to why they couldn't. I've referred multiple clients AWAY from Nationwide and towards Geico for better premiums and WAY better customer service. I am so blown away at their lack of customer service - this coming from someone who works at a law firm dealing with customers all day.

I'm switching even though I hate the gecko commercials, turns out that GEICO is 40% cheaper than Nationwide and as an experienced collision professional, they perform a more thorough inspection of damages, pay for top-quality replacement parts and demand the absolute best repair possible from their approved collision shops! Nationwide not so much. They have let me down. They even told me that after this recent $140/month increase that if they tried to rate it differently, it would only go UP!?!? Nationworst Car Insurance: Still years later, Nationwide commercials enrage me with their lies. I was insured with these vermin when I was hit from behind while in a stopped cars by a man speeding and too hung over to be driving. Nationwide decided that since my injuries were permanent (spine) and he was an UNINSURED Air Force Sergeant scofflaw, that they could not get money from him to repay their outlay of my uninsured motorist coverage.
They did this by LYING to the Howard Co., MD court regarding the availability of the AF Sgt - claiming he was overseas on duty and unable to attend court when he was stationed at Ft. Meade, MD. - 10 miles away.
In ten years, my back never healed fully and was indeed proven to be permanently damaged - but Nationwide refused to ALLOW my case to come to trial by paying off Maryland judges in Howard County to NOT do their jobs. The case was for $500,000 - which was the usual value of such an injury at that point in time. Maryland law stated that an insurance company had neither the obligation or the RIGHT to intercede as the defense for a non-insured person AGAINST THEIR OWN INSURED CLIENT because it was a blatant CONFLICT OF INTEREST. But that was ignored by the highly corrupt Howard County judges bribed by Nationwide to protect their profits.
Years later I still fume at the HYPOCRITICAL and thoroughly deceitful commercials for these CRIMINAL MAFIA VERMIN masquerading as a business. You still owe me $500,000 plus interest, Nationwide criminal scum but that will never happen because the Maryland Insurance Commission is populated with Insurance company criminal scum.

My son had an accident on 2/1/2015.... and because he was not listed on my insurance we were told that they would have to investigate my policy.. I was told that they were not going to be paying for a rental car as they had not established coverage yet. I had full coverage including comprehensive collision and uninsured motorist which should have meant that any accident would be covered.. But instead I have been treated like a common criminal. I am being forced to pay for a rental car and have been for over a month now and after several interviews from several different claim adjusters as well as special investigators I am still being given the run around.
At first they said that the Hold up was they hadn't yet talked to my agent after explaining to them numerous times over several weeks that the agent in which they were referring to had already been interviewed by several people as well the special investigator. They then call her again and interview her then proceeds to call me back and say that she now needs to give me yet another interview which lasted at least 25 to 30 minutes and including such invasive and personal questions that I was asked everything possible about my son, my life, and my family's life that I felt utterly belittled and like I was being interrogated by the CIA. And then after telling me that everything should be resolved now because this was the hold up..
I now call my adjuster only to find out that that's still not the case. They will now have to call my son and the other 2 passengers and I'm sure they will be interrogated as well. My son has been asked what he was doing prior to using my car... If he was drinking and hanging out partying!!!. Needless to say I am outraged, discouraged, and as a result of this whole ordeal. Broke and still without a car and the sad part is there is no end in sight in spite of the adjuster stating to me this morning that the investigation should be wrapped up by next week.... I have been told that same lie by the same adjuster several weeks ago and I'm still in the same place as far as the claim goes. And when this all does come to an end I still may be told that they are not covering the accident!!!

I've been with Nationwide for a year and a half. I had just switched my insurance over to Nationwide after moving to a new state. Before the ink was even dry on our policy (literally the same evening), our car battery happened to go out, leaving us stranded. We called our agent to ask about a tow (we had purchased roadside assistance). She told us since the policy hasn't been completely set up in the system, yet, it would be best if we called a tow truck and paid them directly. Then in a couple days, when the policy is in stone, we should bring the receipt for the tow truck to her office and she would make sure it was reimbursed. It took about two weeks, but we DID receive a check for the full cost of towing. AMAZING!!
One month later that same car was totaled when another driver backed into it as it was parked in front of our house. State Farm, the insurance company of the driver-at-fault, tried claiming all sorts of reasons why they didn't have to cover it. Our agent was fantastic stepping in for us (when she didn't have to) making a number of phone calls to State Farm to make sure they did the right thing. We were disappointed with State Farm's assessment of our vehicle and asked them to look at more closely related comparables. In the end, we felt the State Farm settlement was a touch less than fair, but we had done everything we could to reach a fair settlement and it was time to move on to purchasing another vehicle.
We purchased the new vehicle and the transfer of vehicles on the policy was seamless. In fact, if I remember correctly, we didn't pay for a full month while our old car was in the scrap yard and we hadn't yet purchased a new vehicle. We had originally volunteered for the SmartRide program. A plugin-module is sent to you and you plug it into your vehicle. It monitors how you drive for more than 6 months and then you get a discount based on your driving habits. I'm not a fan of this program, which is why I give Nationwide 4 stars; not 5. This program sounds like you're going to get a huge discount for being a safe driver. I'm a very safe driver. Very alert; only texting at red lights. ;)
Perhaps a little hard on the gas at times (in order to get out of someone's way), or hard on the brake (again in order to stay safe, when some weirdo pulls out in front of me without signalling). SmartRide doesn't monitor your "safety", it merely monitors the number of miles you drive and the number of times you hard brake or gun it on the gas. It doesn't ask "why" you slammed the brakes (to avoid a deer, for example), it just counts up all of your "offenses".
There were countless times in the beginning of this program my wife and I would come home to check our driving status online and see several dings. We became very paranoid about slamming the brakes or gunning the gas. So paranoid that I would rather run a red light or almost get into a fender bender, than risk decelerating faster than 7 miles per hour per second and receive another mark on my SmartRide record. All in all, we learned to deal with what the system wanted to see and in the end felt we might receive a decent discount. We did not. For all of the trouble, newly developed "unsafe" driving habits and what turned out to be 8 months (not the promised 6), we now receive a whopping $2/month discount. WOW!! The stress of trying to please SmartRide is NOT worth the several accidents it nearly caused. I couldn't get rid of that device fast enough discount or none and get back to safe driving!
Finally, still within our first year, we were out with some friends and their car broke down. We thought to use OUR roadside assistance. Not one to fully trust insurance companies, I was nervous about how it might turn out the second time in one year and for a friend's car; not mine. This time, I had the little card in my wallet and so I called the FNOL number for roadside assistance. This time, they handled calling the tow company and within 20 minutes their car was being towed to their preferred repair shop (fortunately we were within the allowed towing radius for their shop). This time, there was no out of pocket payment and then a later reimbursement. We never got a bill for this; Nationwide simply handled all paperwork and payment directly with the tow company. Again, amazing.
So I haven't had any experience, yet, with an actual collision claim. I don't like the SmartRide program. I can say our local agent has been fantastic, doing everything she can to make good on the promise she sold us. And I can also say, I'm a fan of Nationwide's roadside assistance. Today I was searching for homeowners insurance and found these reviews. It occurs to me, as I'm sure it occurs to you, that people only write reviews here when they've had a bad experience. Well, I've had a decent experience with Nationwide and I've now taken over a half hour out of my day to write this review and let you know. FWIW.
