Let me start by saying I've done several long distance moves: HI to CT, CT to FL, FL to PA, and this PA to FL. This experience has been the WORST moving experience I've ever had. Here is what I was "sold" vs what I received:

    #1 Sold - they weren't a brokerage/used their own people.

#1 Received - one of their "agent" companies did the actual move using Ryder trucks. Further, the agent company (BCM Relocation) hired day labors to assist their driver with the move. When goods were delivered, one of the day labors was stopped from working due to the police needing to speak with him regarding a hit & run accident.

#2 Sold - two payments made by credit card (deposit and drop off).

#2 Received - BCM Relocation demanded $1000 upon pickup and the rest upon delivery. When I fought with BCM Relocation people (who called me a ** on the phone), they told me if I had a problem that I needed to contact Colonial because they were my contract company. After agreeing to receive payment upon delivery, they retaliated by refusing to accept credit card payment and demanded cash/cashier's check.

#3 Sold - acct manager would contact me a few days prior to pickup/delivery for date confirmation.

#3 Received - acct manager called the night before pickup to tell me of pickup and the driver of the vehicle called at 9:30pm to tell me delivery would happen at 10am the next morning.

#4 Sold - weight estimate of 3500 based on inventory.

#4 Received - weight of 4700 and no proof/documentation to justify the additional weight.

#5 Sold - communication throughout the move.

#5 Received - couldn't reach anyone on move team for a week; was assured management would reach out to me, but it never happened.

#6 Sold - all items would be tagged/color coded to ensure no inventory mix-ups.

#6 Received - upon delivery, multiple items were placed in my house which weren't mine.

If all this wasn't enough, I have several destroyed items and now have to attempt to make a claim for reimbursement. Lastly, not to divulge personal information, the driver I had for Colonial/BCM Relocation for delivery had a medical emergency DURING delivery and (IMO) should not be medically cleared to drive ANY motor vehicle. Yet, when delivery was complete and the paramedics were gone, the driver drove himself away in the Ryder truck. Avoid Colonial and BCM Relocation - they will make your long distance move a nightmare.

    Original Review: March 10, 2022

Colonial Van Lines is the worst moving company I have ever worked with. I moved my mother from NC to Florida in 2021 and from the start this was a miserable experience. From the beginning what I was quoted and what I was charged are COMPLETELY different. Their estimate was around $5700.00 for the move and the final bill was over $11,000! Not only this but when I finally looked at what they delivered at least 50% of the items and furniture were broken beyond belief and some of the more expensive and desired furniture items and carpets never even made it to the final destination. They literally took the most destroyed items and hid them under blankets in the back of the storage unit so I couldn't view them before they left.

We had a very expensive bedroom set and one of the main armoires never made it at all and I know the new homeowners wouldn't have allowed anything to remain in the house. This means the drivers couldn't even get the item into the truck without destroying it beyond belief or they gave it to another client before reaching us. Utterly irresponsible what they did to us. Then once completed the drivers asked be for a cash tip $500 a piece. The nerve of these people.

Once I was able to figure all of this out I filed a claim which they quickly denied for no good reason. This is not just monetary losses, this is everything my mother and deceased father have collected their whole lives and the devastation of this move put my mother into a tailspin which ultimately contributed to her untimely death as well. This moving company is not to be trusted and I highly recommend using ANYONE else regardless of cost. They will tell you they are the cheapest but that is not what you will pay. You will pay much more by the end, on your credit card and by loss of sleep and hair. PLEASE BEWARE!

The crew packed everything up in a couple of hours. There was one piece of furniture that was very unstable to start with and they had broken the leg on it. They told me about it and put it back together as best as they could. When my things arrived, everything was in good shape. All in all, it was a pretty good experience.

The two gentlemen that went over the inventory many times with me were both very helpful and fantastic. I didn't have any issues at all. The local team that came and did the physical moving was very professional as well. They did everything they could to help me. They had some minor packing of picture frames and pictures from one closet, but I had 35 boxes packed and ready.

With Colonial, there was no pressure and the price was very good. The interaction was very good, too. On the moving day, I had to fly back in to Tulsa and stayed at the apartment. When the movers came, I had everything boxed by that point in time other than the bed and the furniture. They started with the boxes, got all the boxes out, and then with the furniture, they took everything apart. They took more things apart than I thought they would. I had a table. I didn't realize that it could be taken apart. They took that all apart and wrapped everything up very nicely. I was very impressed with the movers.

I really enjoyed Colonial Van Lines. They did excellent work. Their reviews were really good. Their bid came in not the lowest but it was moderate. I mostly was looking for somewhere that had people's experiences that said that they took very good care of all of their things. I've moved a couple of times with different movers and they were nowhere near as thorough when it came to numbering all my boxes and making sure that all of my items were labeled and numbered so that I knew nothing got lost on the way. That was something that I really appreciated that I hadn't seen before. I was impressed the entire way through.

Colonial Van Lines' price point seemed to be a little bit better than some of the other companies. The moving coordinators were very pleasant. It was a good experience, except for one item that did come up damaged. One of my office chairs was damaged, and I noticed that they taped it. So, that means they were aware that it was damaged, and I know that that was not like that prior because I use the office chair every day because I work at home. They did send me a claim form that said it takes 90 days up to 120 days. I'm not going to wait that long to do what I need to do because I have to work every day in this chair.

Colonial Van Lines was very professional and very diligent in getting me the information I needed, the quotes and everything else. There was a delay in my decision-making of whether I was even gonna do this or not. They persisted but not obnoxiously, which I really appreciated. They didn't make it so uncomfortable. They checked in an appropriate way at an appropriate time. So, I chose Colonial not based solely on price. It was based on the way they presented and handled themselves.

My coordinator, Daniel, was wonderful, very knowledgeable and very thorough. Every promise he made, he fulfilled and exceeded. The movers themselves were great. They came into my home. They packed my stuff for me, which was amazing. They were nice and trustworthy. They did a great job packing. Everything came in packed. The promises they made were right on target as far as dates and times. I had the same crew that came and dropped stuff off. They worked quickly and diligently, and everything got in place. So, it was a great experience.

The only negative feedback I would have was I didn't have a direct contact. I didn't know when my stuff was gonna arrive. I needed to start thinking and planning. I called and they found out the day for me. They said, “Look, it will come, like, Monday.” So, there was that one moment where I was like, “Oh, gosh. Who do I contact?” But then I contacted the people I had, and they found out for me. So, that was pretty wonderful.

By far the worst moving company on the planet. And also one of the worst customer service I've ever received (and I don't say that lightly as I've seen quite a few horrible ones over time). My advice to those out there is, if you know what's good for you please stay far away from using CVL services. If there was a "no star" I would have selected that. Honestly, I don't understand how they are still in business. The only decent side of their business is pre-sales. But it's all a trap. Because once you sign that contract (and please read the contract, there's a lot of fine prints), everything goes down hill from there. Horrible customer service; borderline criminal in their operations; end to end post sales services is horrendous; not on time; bad packaging, horrible delivery service; very poor issue resolution process and the list goes on..

Through their carelessness, they damage a lot of good and show no empathy. You can barely get them to address any issues. Took about 6 months to process a claim.. When they do, they refund pennies... e.g., They damaged goods worth over 5k.. and they refunded a little over a 100 bucks after 6 months.. That's just criminal... Just sharing so others don't fall prey to this company! There are way better options out there...

I found them very professional. They did everything they told me they would do. They gave me a good quote. It was several hundred dollars less than the other quotes that I had gotten, so I was a little bit concerned about the service, but the service was excellent. There was some doubt because they were picking up things for me out of a storage in Nashville and bringing them to Louisiana and there was some concern about the weight. But when I described what was there, they got the weight right on the button and there was no change when they delivered the goods to me.

Everything got here. The gentleman that delivered the stuff were the same ones that picked it up and they put everything exactly where I asked them to put it. They stacked up the boxes where I asked them to put the boxes. They were just as sweet as they could be. A wonderful couple of guys and I could not be more pleased. They did not fail me in any way. They did a good job. I am so happy with Colonial and I have told everybody who is even thinking about moving to call Colonial and at least give them a chance to bid on the move for them.

They literally moved my stuff 5 different times, this is after I asked their so called expert if my stuff was going to be put in storage. They said "No", and it was put in storage twice, once in LA, and once in Missouri. Lied about where my stuff was during the move (I know this because I talked to the driver who delivered my belongings), Broke over 50 individual items. They are the worst company period. I know most moving companies have one issue or another, but by far Colonial Van Lines makes already a stressful situation much much worse. Another fact, they pass you along to so called experts during the move and one is worse than the other. I can't say this enough, STAY AWAY,

By the time the outside party showed up in September, our house had already closed and we were on a time crunch, so we were forced to go with them. It was a little frustrating when this truck showed up with another person's product on it as well and they were telling us that they were taking our home stuff to Las Vegas to repack and tote and store because we had requested storage.

When we got ready to come, we called them in December and we couldn't get in contact with them. Colonial supposedly kept trying, and they finally got them. Colonial started calling us and telling us it was getting scheduled to move. They did that for the first two times and after that, they never called us back to let us know what the progress was on our move. My husband was very frustrated. He told Colonial had he known an outside party was coming to pick it up, we wouldn't have gone with them. When we did some research on that outside party, we found that they had a lot of complaints. At one time, their license had been suspended because of a lack of insurance, so we were really skeptical.

The next day we got a call from the outside party saying they were two days out. They then delivered our stuff before Colonial knew it was moving. At that time, we didn't know who was bringing it to us 'cause they were looking for a driver. But the guy that delivered it was great. It was just that we got it on January 24th not knowing it was going to be there, so the communication with Colonial with the outside party was lacking.

The outside party that showed up wrapped everything wonderfully. We only have two picture frames that had a little bit of damage. But considering everything else, nothing was broken. Then I had never seen anybody using as much tape and care as the guys that did it on the Washington State end. It was taped and blankets inside of boxes. Also, it looked like they dropped one box of silverware and it ripped open, but they taped it all back together, and there was no problem with it.

They can't get it exactly but everything about it was reasonable, and I was generally well satisfied with the company. The moving crew was polite, knowledgeable and capable. Everything about them was what I would expect of a moving crew. I would have been terribly upset if they didn't meet those standards, but they did. My wife had passed away a short time before I moved and I was really having a lot of grief. So, I may have not reacted the way most people do, but when they came in, they were very cooperative, asked questions and did what I suggested. Everything went along the way it should.

I called Colonial Van Lines and started the procedure. They said, "You got to make room. Make sure you can get an 18 wheeler down your street, you got to make sure you can get an 18 wheeler into the storage bin area.” So I went through all this and checked in with them. They asked me about four times if I was sure I could get a truck in there. But then the truck was small enough to come up my driveway. So I got all these people working and moving trucks that day but they didn't even come in with a tractor-trailer.

Empire should have just mentioned what size truck would more likely be for me so I could have made a little different plan with the people here because it was Christmas Eve and they had to come in and move trucks. When they did the delivery, some of the containers I had were cracked. Also, I got somebody else's stuff and I was nice enough to give it back to the mover. But other than that, it's done. They did what they said they were going to do. I got everything pretty much except for my ice fishing box. So I have to fill out the paperwork to try to get some reimbursement on that stuff.

They did the pickup on a Saturday and then the delivery on a Sunday. So that was good. Colonial also got back to us in a timely fashion. We had a little bit more than we thought we had, so the price did go up. The only thing I wish they had told me was that if the weight is X amount, then we pay more. I was never told that in the beginning. The person who we talked to when we called that day apologized for that, but we did not get that if the weight was a little bit more, you're gonna pay way more. But overall, the experience was good. The main reason I went with Colonial was the price. The others that I looked at were a good bit more expensive. They were also on time there when they said they were coming out. The only issue I had with them at all was that they thought it was gonna take three hours to pack, but it took them all day. So, they were much later getting through than they thought it was going to be. Then after they had left, I did not particularly point out that I had a whole kitchen cabinet that was full of stuff that they did not see. But they were going through putting tags on everything that I was showing them. And it fit my car, so it worked out okay.

They got here in Texas and unloaded and put the furniture together. There was always someone when I called to get an estimate. That guy followed me through. He stayed in contact with me until the move, all the way through the move and there was also someone to make sure that it got here. They kept trying to call to see how the move went. I was pleased.

Colonial did a great job. The woman I worked with knew what she was doing. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was easy. They took the truck to a weigh station and everything weighed more. We were charged based on the extra weight, nothing else. It was accurate according to the weight that we thought was going to be there. However, everything is charged, like if they use their tape, their plastic wraps, their mattress bags, like blankets. And you don't get to keep the blankets. It's just to use them. So if you can buy those items cheaper somewhere or borrow them from people, I would recommend doing that if you wanted to save some money.

We also were surprised that only two people showed up at the door to move our entire townhouse. But they were very efficient and fast. Also, our drop-off date was immediately the next day while we thought we were going to have to wait about a week for our things to be delivered. But they followed us across the state, to a different state even that night and dropped off our things the next day. I would recommend them. They were nice, courteous and accommodating.

I was happy they weren't pushy but they still were very clear about still being able to help me if I still needed the move. When I was ready, I was able to call them and schedule it. They completely walked me through the process and everything went very well. They knew my account and they told me who they were and what their purpose was for the call if it was a new person calling me. It was very smooth.

It was pretty in-depth with the rep I talked to and didn’t really take too long. They asked all the questions that I needed for things that I wasn't even considering. It was very helpful, overall. Also, the reps who assisted me during the move were awesome. They called me a lot and then they asked me if I heard back from the actual movers. When I didn't, they called and reached out and they were able to give me a better update. It was great communication -- probably the best thing about this compared to the other movers I've used in the past.

The company was able to offer me compensation for the issues we went through. Though it will not bring back my items, I was able to pay off some of the expenses. Thank you Donna.

    Original Review: Dec. 28, 2021

We used them because they were the only ones who could come within our time frame. We paid $26K to have $10K in damage created by the move. I was told by dispatch they could get it to me on the date I needed. I called back to arrange for the day and was told, "No, we don't do that." I kept calling daily from 12/5 to 12/22 for updates, was hung up on, put on hold for 30 minutes, or just never called back.

It was a true nightmare. All boxes came upside down, smashed, and broken items. We packed our own items very well with strong packing. Broken elliptical that has a handle to move it. Parts for items they took apart are missing. They complained the whole time about putting things together and even left without putting half of the stuff together. I am finding items in pieces all over the house. DO NOT USE THEM. If I can prevent someone else from this horrible experience. PLEASE...DO NOT USE THEM. The salesperson called me daily trying to get me to sign, and once we were signed he never called me back.

We talked to probably 20 companies on different occasions. Some were giving us cheaper rates but the person I was in touch with at Colonial was a little bit decent man who was not trying to get a business out of me. It seemed like others were pressing and I don't like people who are so hyped up and trying to sell their company. Although we were paying more with Colonial, I thought it was intuitive to go with them.

The movers were running late and we had booked our tickets to go out of town. We put all the boxes outside and they just took all the boxes from outside, put our tire back in the garbage can, then delivered the boxes to my son. It was an expensive move, but we kind of signed up with them knowing that this was going to be the cost. Our boxes were a little flimsy, so they were a little bit broken, but that's understandable. They did a good job. They have high integrity because we were not there when they took all these boxes but they delivered it to my son in one piece. We like Colonial and will reuse them in the future.

They scratched up my floors so badly and when I pulled them up on it, they gave me attitude as if I was the one in the wrong. To my shock and horror, after they left, I found items of mine which they had taken to the truck just dumped in the street outside my apartment.

On the move into my new apartment, they removalists damaged my door frame. Many of my possessions were missing or damaged. All my art work missing, my expensive luxury brand goods missing, half my jewelry missing. I made a claim for the damage and the company offered me $375 as a final settlement with a gag order. I did not take a cent from them. I have moved multiple states and countries and never seen anything so bad.

As we contacted people, Colonial Van Lines would return calls or leave messages versus some others. So, we ended up going with them. The rep was very helpful. We called back a couple of times and talked with him. The initial estimate was way different than what we ended up paying. However, we had way more stuff than he normally inventories for a three-bedroom home. And when we went over specific things, later, he explained that there was no way the original estimate could be correct, because we had all of this stuff. And we said we knew that. Even when his part was done and I was given to someone else more specifically, he was still someone we could call and go back to. We were delayed by two weeks because the driver's truck needed repair. But we were aware of it. We were still trying to pack, so that was fine with us. But they kept us informed as the progress went on. Everything worked out well.

Colonial Van Lines was able to accommodate a quick timeline. The pick-up was fine. They were great. But the delivery was multiple days late outside of the delivery window. The coordinator working for Colonial just kept calling me and telling me they were in transit. So, I found the name of the subcontractor and called them directly. They knew where the truck was. The driver called before they were going to be here. But we're in the middle of nowhere, 15 minutes from Canada. So, we're the end of the line for them for that delivery. If Colonial was able to provide accurate, up-to-date information about where folks' stuff is and when they expect it to be delivered, that would be helpful.

I didn't know that Colonial would subcontract out. Nobody was upfront about that. It seems it could have been done more cheaply if I had worked directly with whoever the subcontractor is. So, there didn't seem to be much added benefit to having Colonial in the mix. Also, people should understand the insurance options available to them and purchasing of insurance. The coverage that Colonial has is not going to cover much. It's 60 cents per pound per article. They damaged my clothing dryer, but the money we would have got out of them would have been almost nothing for it.

Out of all the moving companies I've used, they have been the most professional and most enjoyable to work with. They treated me like a person instead of their next pick-up. Asked why I was moving, if they could do anything extra to help out when I got here. They were in contact with me on updates and when they were going to get here, so I knew exactly what day and what time they were going to be. Just good people. Also, it all got here a little faster.

I update them when I get any updates so that they'll know if it gets extended again. Overall, it was a very positive experience with Colonial. Generally, moving can be pretty stressful and I've had some pretty bad moving experiences. I read a bunch of reviews online about Colonial and I was skeptic. As soon as we signed the contract, I thought I made a huge mistake. But at every single juncture where I wanted to say, “I knew it, right? I was wrong,” they were super responsive. They called me and gave me a bunch of updates. The moving coordinator was on top of his game.

I have two minor complaints though. One is the time. They gave me a 21-day window when the stuff would get delivered, and it got delivered at the very end of the window. That was not a huge problem, but it was annoying. I wish they would manage expectations upfront a little bit better. The second complaint is when we moved out, our building required the hallways to be covered in plastic to prevent damage to the building. The moving coordinator guy said that was included in the price. He added it as a line item and I was charged for it. But when the movers showed up, they didn't have it so I had to go buy it. In spite of these problems, everything showed up and not a single item was broken. It was a 3,100-mile move and that's unbelievable. If we were moving again, I would hire Colonial in a second.

But when they were unpacking, they were kind of rushed. Some things were just moved into the house. We expected the movers to be able to put some of the furniture that they disassembled back into the condition that they packed it in, but they did not so it's taking us a little bit longer than we expected for us to unpack. The quote was way off because I did not have a good idea of everything that needed to be packed. I didn't realize that I was going to need to have an inventory list. But I revised it two or three days later, and that was accurate. Overall, it was a pleasurable experience.

The delivery crew scuffed walls and floors, and broke a light switch by crashing a piece of furniture into it. The Helix crew that packed was courteous, but it turns out they didn't pack well. The Helix delivery crew was too rushed to follow my instructions or read the boxes, so they just delivered a majority of boxes to the basement and garage so I had to bring them up to the third floor.

Hired Colonial in October to move my elderly parents to Virginia! Pick up date was scheduled for Nov 27-29! Called on the 26th to check status. Was informed pick up would be on December 1! Informed them house was sold and they had to be out by end of day on Nov 29th. Was on hold for 20 minutes. The guy came back and said he would call me back. Called back and said they arranged to be there by the 29th. So called them back again on the 28th just to confirm. Was informed we were still on for the 29th. In this process of these calls talked to at least four people! Dispatch, managers and the gentleman that was to follow the whole move 'til the end. Called again on the 29th and was told by management truck was stuck in traffic. Later I received a call from the truck driver who said he was in another state and would be there tomorrow! Informed him that wasn’t going to work so I had to call the boss again.

So I called and got a voicemail so I left message informing her she lied to me about truck stuck in traffic. She finally called back and said she promised to have truck there on the 30th. If I could arrange it with the new owners of my parents' home. So we made arrangements to be out on the 30th. Lo and behold no show on the 30th. Had to hire two people at last minute to have all furniture moved to garage! Cost my parents 400.00 dollars for that. Then had to stay in motel for two nights while trying to make other arrangements. Another $420.00 out of pocket along with putting their dogs in kennel for another $100.00.

Please be on ALERT and don’t believe everything they say! Keep in touch up till you see the truck in your sight! They have reimbursed my $2000.00 but we are still out all the extra expenses. And the stress it caused my elderly parents was absolutely horrible. I tried to make this as smooth as possible and it was devastating to all of us! Especially when they're up in this age!

This was a terrible experience and the company did nothing to rectify the damage. My mom and sister moved from California to Tennessee and it was a total nightmare. They paid Colonial Van Lines $26,000 for the move. They did not inform us when the trucks were going to arrive and when they did arrive there was no crew to unload the belongings. The truck driver threatened to take all their stuff back to California if a crew didn’t show up. My sister was in tears.

Then, finally a crew came and they were non-English speaking gardeners! This company claims to “vet” all their contractors, but these were gardeners who even gave us their landscaping business card. They had no idea how to move items, damaged our walls and front door, put nothing in the right place, didn’t unwrap or assemble anything and left filthy wet cardboard all over the house. They didn’t speak English so they couldn’t understand where to put things and they even placed furniture outside in the rain. Please see the pictures.

I could go on and on about how difficult it was dealing with the actual management of this company. They treated us like we were not real humans and acted as if we had done something wrong when we demanded they finish the job. Finally, outside of the contract date, they got a “rescue crew” out there to at least unpack some stuff. They finally assembled the beds and actually did it incorrectly so my sister and mom still couldn’t live there. Oh, and they offered us $380 in compensation for weeks of nightmare and a $26,000 job that was not completed.

It was actually so bad that we called a local TV news station in Knoxville and their consumer reports division did a story on us! Please don’t use them if you want a positive experience in your new chapter of life. My mom and sister are still finding things in the wrong places and it has definitely put a huge damper on what should have been a happy time.

I had not a lot of stuff to move. I could have moved it myself. But then there would have been the cost of running the truck, getting somebody to drive the truck or tow my vehicle, and the gas. It was real close, money-wise, with what Colonial had, price-wise. I checked out a couple of other places and Colonial had the best reputation and price. They came in and their folks were the best movers I've ever had.

The time frame was also good considering I had under 2,000 pounds worth of stuff being moved, so it had to get put on with other people's stuff. They gave me a good time frame and it fell right within it, so it worked out very well. They were really good because I had a storage set up just in case closing got pushed back and I was gonna have them to bring the stuff to the house for closing. Two days before they were supposed to bring me the stuff, I notified them, “You're gonna have to put it in the storage.” and they had no problem with that at all.

Everything was right what they told me it was gonna cost. Customer service was good. I had questions. When I reached out to them, they answered me within a reasonable amount of time. Sometimes, I didn't have the question until later on in the day, but I still got an answer that day. They really did a good job. I'd recommend anybody to use them.

The expectations and the service were as Colonial had described to me. I am missing a couple of boxes that had my kitchen stuff. I just realized that and it's already been a month. But it's not a big deal.

They gave an estimated time and then an exact time. They were on time and delivered on time.

I posted a negative review and there was response from the company stating to call their management and I still have no date of delivery, was told, "We told you "tomorrow" but we're waiting to get a green light to deliver." Never got time, call bank and I still don't have my bel. Numerous reviews state that their things were not delivered, broken, unprofessional but they bury those on the bottom. Wish I never used them.

"Resolution department" has not resolved anything and keep saying the same thing. "We're escalating." "We're calling." "We'll find out and get back to you." I'm not sure what imaginary person they're calling but they should be out of business. They have had my items from 10/28. It is now almost two weeks past my delivery date and window. I've had to call them to ask. No follow up, put on hold for 10 minutes, always waiting for this "dispatcher " and "manager " to find out details. Requested address of storage with no answer.

Original Review: Picked up belongings late from NJ residence was supposed to deliver to Georgia in 3 weeks did not deliver, no updates? Account manager not responsive to email with limited details and no callback. Police report filed and reported this company.

I didn't want to travel myself, packing everything up and moving it 10 hours away. Colonial gave me a date. At the end of the month, they were gonna tell me. I wanted to move at the end of the month and I needed a box truck. The guy told me, “I can't do until the 1st.” I said, "Okay. I could wait a couple of days to get to the 1st." When the first company couldn't come on the 1st, it peed me off because I had moving plans, getting out of the house and hotel plans. They bought it for another one or two days until they got there.

It took three days to get everything delivered which was weird because they picked it up in Pennsylvania. It was a big box truck, 26 feet. I might have taken up 18 feet of it with my stuff, so they only have the back end of it. When I talked to them, they had to run somewhere else. The day before that, they were in Atlanta to bring something up. I said, "How do you get to Atlanta from Pennsylvania without going through Tennessee?" But that was all scheduling and it got here. Had to stay an extra day in a hotel until it got here, but it is what it is. Everything was fine after that.

The guys who did the moving were good. The guys were nice to help me. They banded everything up, taped everything up, moved it safely and brought it down here and packed it. Everything I wanted, they took it there. They also put the dresser together with the mirror. I'd use them again, too, if I was moving long-distance again. Everything came and nothing was busted.

Giving 5 Stars, as Donna was extremely helpful with resolving our issues we had.

    Original Review: Nov. 29, 2021

Updated on 05/22/2022: It’s been 7 months since we moved with this company. They damaged several of our items and lost others. We still have gotten ZERO compensation or adjustment after spending nearly $10,000. I honestly cannot believe how poorly this has been handled.

Updated on 12/07/2021: It’s been two weeks since our delivery and while Donna a manager at Colonial has gotten involved to help us find our missing things - WE STILL HAVE NO ANSWER ON OUR BEDS. They seem to have disappeared. I also have gotten no compensation or confirmation of that compensation on our moving being the disaster it was. While I appreciate the help Donna has lender we still are at an impasse because this is the problem when you broker out jobs like this - there’s no responsibility. The company who moved us is a joke. I still would not on my worst enemy recommend this crappy of a company to mover our things. If you want to read what happened on our first review take a look for my review from last week.

Original Review: If I could give zero stars I would. We were relocating from Texas to Michigan and had to do so in a very quick timeline one month. I knew the second the movers arrived it was going to be a nightmare. We had a driver with a team show up on a Tuesday evening and they left one mover there in our home until 3:00 am by himself. So we had a total stranger in our home into the middle of the night. Then when they finally arrived after 3:00 am to load our remaining product they couldn’t fit anything left so they had to them come back what would have been the following evening but ended up being 17 hours later from the time they left after we were told they would be there at 1:00pm we saw no one until 7:30pm.

Fast forwards to our delivery last Tuesday 11/23-they arrive to our home and are missing our master bedroom mattress, our spares bedroom mattress and box spring, a bbq smoker, the lawnmower was placed on top of our gas grill leaking gasoline all over that and other boxes. We also found upon unpacking that we were missing several other boxes of ours including property like cookware, hair tools, small appliances. When unloading our dryer they dropped it on our floor damaging our hardwood, they also put cracks and scrapes and dents in our drywall of our brand new home.

The account manager we had on our move was A JOKE. She was never available and didn’t help with a damn thing. They are still “trying to locate” our missing items, but we’re wasting no time and are in process of filing a lawsuit for our things. I would do everything in your power to not book this JOKE of a company. Huge waste of time and money, they care very little of their customers and provide the minimalistic amount of help. DO NOT BOOK!!!

They're really good. Chad was very straightforward and honest. I probably wouldn't have gone with Colonial if it weren’t for that guy. We set up the move. There was a new person that was my communication person and she was good. The reason that I was using all this, my mother went into a coma with a rare condition and I had to move her up from Miami. While I was managing her care in the hospital, I was having to move her out of the house I grew up in, 3,000 square foot home, and figure out what goes and what doesn't. So I was stressed out, I drove them nuts. I was always like, “Nobody called me. What the hell is going on?” But they already had everything covered along the way and they did a good job.

The guy that came to move me was really professional. At first, I was freaked out. I was like, “Dude, how's one guy going to do this?” But then I suddenly figured out really quickly that he had everything he needed. It was easy for him. He did it. I don't even know if he broke a sweat. He was also really polite and professional. It was somebody that you're okay with handling your stuff.

The price was also lower than what they told me it was going to be. Everything showed up well, too. There were little things here and there, but it wasn't really their fault. Sometimes, it's unavoidable. There was a standing mirror and something had cracked on it. But, it took me two minutes to fix it with the carpenter's glue and it's as good as new. Everything else arrived in one piece.

I also liked the fact that they used a smaller truck and kept it on that truck the whole way. I watched him and he was careful. Then when he got here, my wife said he was really careful getting it out. Everything was handled really well. They also got it there about a day early. The only thing is I would have gotten the extra insurance, but I had forgotten when to do that or the timing. But in hindsight, I would have just wasted 600 bucks or whatever it was, because nothing was broken. I was lucky I got a good company.

Colonial Van Lines was very attentive. The kept in contact even when we were having issues with their lines not being able to get through because some companies have been listed as spam so the calls were not coming through. But they worked with us to get as much information to us as they possibly could. They gave backup numbers so we could get the calls. Everything was done as professionally as they could.

Our movers were dedicated and experienced. They didn't have the specialized boxes but they had the padding. They knew how to strap, brace, and tie down the equipment. They stayed with our things. We came in a day after they arrived. They delivered, unpacked and set up the things that they took down at the old place. Nothing was broken. Everything was perfect. My only thing is if they're going to do dedicated load, maybe look for those that have smaller trucks. That helps with some of the fuel rates.

The people that unpacked us were fantastic workers. The original quote was way off but to no fault of Colonial, when they did the quote, they went by rooms, what do you have in the rooms. But dealing with my parents who tend to be hoarders and had an attic full of stuff that I had no idea of nor did they ask about nor did they know about, it tend to be a little bit larger.

I was told that my movers would come on 11/13 Saturday but it was cancelled due to his family emergency. Then another third party mover was used (BCM) and they proceeded to lie and steal my property by saying they would require another deposit after moving the items on the truck and that I had no further option. Then when it comes time to deliver my items they increase the amount that was on the contract without giving us a itemized list to show the supposed extra items even though they actually left numerous items. They then state they don't want debit or credit but want cash or cashier's check before giving me my items. No one knows any info and the third party movers clearly are scammers. The amount quoted was clearly false and the amount changed by over 2000.00. This was the worst move ever and I will make sure to inform all family friends and Facebook associates of this move.

My daughter had graduated from college and in between college and finding a job, she was at home and she decided she wanted to move from Durham to Tampa. So, we moved her stuff. Our moving coordinator was really good. I learned a lot during this. I've never used a moving company before, but they talked about how it's by weight. I had talked to another company and they did it by volume, but I liked the service that I was getting from the Colonial person. I was doing this in the car coming back from Florida so I would drop cell connections, and he would call me back. So, that was really good customer service.

A thing that didn't happen is they said that once the people who were moving it were going, they would go weigh the truck and we would get a final weight. I never did get that. But it didn't really matter. The people who moved it were really good. They were careful and did everything they said they would do. I was relocating from New York to North Carolina. During this process my family and I were researching different moving companies to make sure we were getting a trustworthy company to move and take care of our personal items. We were promised the world! And was promised they were the best at what they did. First off they sent a third party to pick up my furniture and personal items when I thought we had hired Colonial Van Lines directly.

As the process started things were just got out of control. The communication was extremely bad! When my family and I finally got settled we happen to call the company to be able to set a moving date and was told we had to wait for the company to be able to give us a date. Which happen to be a almost a month out! As we patiently waited for our items when we finally received our items and was extremely disappointed when the one gentleman they sent to unload a whole truck alone, we notice MANY items that were sentimental value to my mother were either lost or damaged due to neglect of this company.

When I called in regards to the claim the representative also came out very rude when I was explaining of the sentimental values that my mother lost. Her response was "what the cup?". They tried to compensate $250 from all the damages and items lost and I didn't think that was fair. They then called you increase your $500 because my sister did not purchase insurance at the time. I could understand if there was a weather problem and we end up taking a lost due to the weather. I am aware of this. But to have to fight for items that should of never been damaged. I can't even say it was a mistake due to the amount of items that were damaged. We had a label on our tv and that of course is no good anymore. This company takes 0 responsibility for the damage they cause. Also refuse to give me the number to their customer relation department claiming they didn't have one.

If I had questions, I could make a phone call and have my questions answered, which they were. Initially, when I was investigating which company to go with, I called Colonial back again. I discussed with them that I had read reviews and the reviews were bad and it concerned me. The coordinator put my concerns to rest, as well as did the two movers, Demetrius and Samantha both.

Colonial Van Lines was super detailed but there were a couple of things that they did not mention that would have been super helpful. One being the fact that there could be additional charges if the distance from the truck to your front door is farther than a certain amount or if there are more than x number of stairs. The other thing they forgot to include was the cost to wrap the furniture. We ended up having to pay those at the last minute. We got an original quote of around $3,300 but ended up spending a good extra $500 that we did not expect. But otherwise, the inventory part of it was fine. We were on the same page as far as making the list ahead of time and they got us moved super quick. The main guy was super nice. He was apologetic about some of the charges that were surprising.

Colonial handed me off from one person to another. They explained their role and then the next person I talked to did the next thing. It was fairly smooth though it was a little complicated talking to different people. Everybody I worked with was good with except the last person, Oliver who had self-esteem issues. The problem was that even though I had a contract, no one could tell me for sure that the movers were actually going to show up on the day that they needed to show up. They couldn't even tell me that until the morning they were supposed to show up. I was on a deadline and I had to go to closing and I didn't know until the morning they were coming that they were coming. No one could answer my questions.

Oliver would semi-argue with anything we said. He told me a bunch of stuff and I would summarize. Then he would say, "I didn't use those words." He got very defensive, like I was trying to put words in his mouth. It was a very frustrating couple of days. I would tell him what I needed to tell him and then he would just use glib phrases. He would say, "That's not an internal policy," or, "I don't answer those kinds of questions." I finally started talking to him like I was his boss and I said, "You will tell me. Someone there will tell me today if the movers are coming tomorrow. I have a real estate contract and it'll be in violation of that contract, and you're going to call and tell me today. And your movers better show up tomorrow morning."

Oliver was still talking about how the move may be given out to a third party. I said, "You're not doing that. You're sending a Colonial Van Lines truck with Colonial Van Lines people." And that is exactly what happened. But I don't believe that if I didn't get very, very forceful with him that they would have shown up on time on the day I needed them. Oliver may have been a minion at the end of the chain of events and really had no say-so, but he didn't know how to convey that he was just citing other people's facts. If he was my employee, I would've fired him the second time I heard him talk to a customer like that. When push come to shove and he couldn't answer my question, he got very unprofessional and very defensive and there's no reason for that.

Colonial Van Lines was the second company that came out and said, “It's gonna be probably half the price.” And I'm like, “Okay.” And mom decided to go with them. With the first guy that we dealt with, Nicholas, Mom said it went fabulous. Moving day was scheduled for the 26th. When it came a week prior, anxiety was through the roof. I knew that they would call me a week prior. But I was getting nervous because I had not heard anything. So I called and they said, “Oh, yeah. We've got you down for the 26th. You're all set. Somebody will call you. It's going to be okay. You're going to be all right. We're going to take care of you.” The Monday before the move, we flew down from Kentucky down to Florida. And they contacted us and they said, “They’ll be out there tomorrow to pack everything up and get everything loaded and move everything.”

When my anxiety was through the roof, it was as high as that airplane that I flew down to Florida in because mom had a lot of stuff. She's up there in age and can't do stuff by herself. I walked into her house but there was nothing done. It was a chaotic mess. I said, “Oh, my God, Are they going to be able to get this done in two days’ time?” The guy that came out and loaded everything had a magic wand. I don't know how he did it but he did it by himself. He was amazing. Not only was he a great worker, but he was a great human being. I told him straight up, “If you're ever in the Bowling Green area, you're passing through, please stop by and say hello because we really like you. You are a nice person.”

If you’re looking for movers to move you long distance, go with Colonial. I've talked to several people within the company and every single one of them went above and beyond to try to calm my anxieties and reassured me that they would take care of it. And they were good with the communication as far as letting us know what would happen and when. Mom was in a gated community. And she had to know when they would be there so she could let the people of the community know to come and open the gate for them. Everything was top-notch.

The process was very easy. Colonial kept me abreast of everything that was going on, getting insurance for me and turned me over to someone who set that up for me. The movers picked up when they said they were going to ship and got here sooner than I expected. They unpacked everything and set up all my furniture. Colonial met my needs. And matter of fact, they accelerated it a little bit. Because they had moved it out a couple of weeks and then they said, “Okay, you'll get it on this day and this day, between these three days or four days,” and they had it here. They're very good movers and they did what they said they were going to do, and that's what I appreciated.

Colonial could do my pick-up the fastest. It was from Georgia to New York. They used a local moving company in Atlanta and it was very good. The people were so nice and they took care of every piece of furniture like it was their own. The setup was perfect. The rep was always available. It was a quick move, from May, and they picked up the end of May. I only had a couple of weeks.

When it came to moving things, I went from room to room explaining what I had and it was put down and everything was verified. The guys that did the moving things were so polite. I'm an elderly person and I'm by myself and they took time to do everything correctly. Everything was packed and covered really great. Nothing that I got or had was broken. I really appreciated that. Hopefully, I will be able to connect with them again at the end of the year when I want to move again.

Initially, we were a little upset because we gave them the date we wanted. They gave us the window and we knew it could be possible to move it to the next day, which was what happened. But it was fine because they more than compensated for it. They were constantly in touch with me when things changed, although internal communication could have been a little bit better. But as far as customer service directly with the client, they were always right there. Our main contact went out of her way for follow-up and she was really good at her job.

The movers that came were exceptional and my mother is really very pleased with their service. There were huge pieces of material furniture and they all carried it even with just my brothers and father to help. They really went the extra mile to get the furniture in. They made sure they showed up the day as promised. It was as late as midnight and they were still ready to do it for us if we wanted to. It all worked out great.

The movers actually did a great job but I was a little concerned about the final bill at the end of the move. It was drastically higher than what I was originally quoted. I felt a little thrown back by that final cost. Also, I had a couple of things damaged. But it's nothing earth-shattering. They got my thing to me in exactly seven days and the two guys that moved me were very professional.

Our experience with Colonial Van Lines was terrible. The sales team were amazing and made us feel very comfortable choosing them to move us across country. As in many other reviews I've recently seen, once they took possession of our items it went downhill. First, they charged us an additional $4K in "added weight" which they originally calculated. We needed to have our granite dining table crated and and at the time of pickup that was not arranged so my husband had to build and help load it to be sure we shipped with household goods. We were not able to receive the shipment upon arrival and were charged another $4K to store and deliver three weeks later which seems excessive. What was the worst part is the sub contracted movers they hired to move our goods were very neglectful and damaged many items as well as hiring from Craig's List labor to deliver.

Once again we had to provide our own labor to get our dining room table off the truck and into our home as they did not have sufficient means. All the while we have spent hours on the phone trying to sort out our billing which includes charges for long delivery and wait time that did not happen. We moved July 26 and today 11/02 we have not finalized with them. Our calls and emails go unanswered for weeks. I would never recommend them as this has been the worst experience with any company and if I had it to do over, I would hire a single trucker to haul. It turns out that would have been less expensive. We went from a quote of $13K to $22K and have zero control over anything as a consumer.

After a positive interaction with Colonial Van Lines, Shane increased their star rating on Nov. 17, 2021.

    Updated review: Nov. 17, 2021

Colonial Van Lines was excellent on the front end with the sales and marketing knowledge that they had to get me the resolution that I needed. There were a few hiccups along the way but they were resolved by communications from both the sales department and the customer service department.

    Original Review: Nov. 1, 2021

Colonial Van Lines was super great on the sales side. They were very knowledgeable on the frontend, and they were engaging and great at getting my business. I felt like I was gonna get a 5-star service then ended up getting a 1-star service. They did a quote at the beginning then I called them back and said, “Hey, I have a new quote I need to do because it's more boxes than I had thought.” They said, “Oh, well, someone will call you before the move to do that adjustment for you.” I said, “I really just want to make sure there's enough room on the truck.” They told me to wait until I got the call, which I didn't get until three days before the move. I told them the new adjustment and it went up by $2,000. It was almost doubled and I was outside the cancellation window at that point, so I just went with it.

They originally quoted me a couple thousand, and it ended up being over 5,000. It was a bit wild. Also, anything that they promised they were going to do, they didn't. The communication on the backend, they told me that they were going to tell me how much the truck weighed before and after the pickup, because it was going to be less money if it was less than what they quoted, but they didn't weigh the truck at all.

When I was waiting on the truck on the backend, they called and told me that the truck had been delivered. I said, “Well, that's great, because I haven't had it delivered here. Where has it been delivered?” They said, “Oh, well that's just a mistake.” When the truck driver showed up, I asked him how much the truck was, because I wanted to make sure that the weight was under the quote. He said, “I never weighed the truck. So I'm just gonna charge you what they quoted you.” There was a lot of stuff going on, and I just wanted it to be over.

The crew was good during pickup. During delivery though, it was only one person instead of two and he was scatterbrained a bit. He was putting other people's stuff in my garage. My bed frame was cracked as well, but I have not claimed it on insurance, because it was just that. Everything else was well taken care of. All in all, Colonial Van Lines wasn't terrible, but it was not the experience that I had originally been told it was gonna be. The stuff that they disassembled on the frontend, they were supposed to assemble on the backend, but they didn't.

Kurt, the gentleman that we worked with by phone, was very cooperative. He was so good, because he had patience and worked with us. He did his job great, because he called and asked us how we were doing. At the time, we were looking and didn't find another moving company. He said, "Well, just let me know if I can be of any help." There wasn't that, "Oh, you're a pain in the neck" kind of thing. The quote was accurate as well. It was more than we originally thought it was going to be, but because Colonial Van Lines goes by weight, they have no way of saying, "This is your price and that's it." We had a few more things that we put in when they came, so it was fine.

We had two gentlemen that moved us, picked up our furniture and brought it to our destination the same day, and they were super. They were such hard workers and they were polite, efficient, and did everything perfectly, 100%. They should be paid more. They went from this job right to another state to go start another job the next day and they were still smiling when they left.

The quote wasn’t accurate because I had more than what we estimated at first. I thought taking away something would make it less, but it made it more weight-wise. The moving crew was wonderful too. They came in and zipped stuff up. I had everything packed except for the clothes and they did that. They were well-organized.

Customer service was very thorough and they handled everything really well. We're a military family and we've moved before. We did a self-pack, so all Colonial had were the large items to move. We prepped everything. What took the longest is getting the truck packed then we had them hold until we got some things done in the new house once we came across country. It all went fine. The timeline was exactly what we had talked about and what we needed to get things prepped for them to come in. The truck driver was great about keeping us posted on where he was even before he dropped the trailer in Pensacola to be stored. He was also very good at following up with us. In the day of offload, I heard from him again, so we knew exactly what time they were coming in.

The one thing that Colonial could improve on is the boxes were just inventoried with tags. That was all front load. When they offloaded, there was no real count. As they identify the boxes, they also need to be able to identify that all the boxes come off on the offload because we were the ones who counted that and they were not identified clearly. I got it though. If they don't know what's in the box, they don't know what to do, but that could have been a bit more thorough.

It has been ages since we moved and we didn’t have any idea who to call. We contacted a couple of other van lines and their pricing was way out of line. We called Colonial, and the price was significantly lower than the other two we called. That caused us to pause. They gave us some trepidations about sometimes you get what you pay for, but we decided to go for it, and it could not have gone smoother. The movers, Dominic and Andrew, did a fantastic job. They were very professional, personable and did what they said they were going to do. If they said they were going to text or call us, they absolutely did, Johnny-on-the-spot. They were gentlemanly, considerate, and I cannot say enough praiseworthy things about them. We really enjoyed meeting them.

Colonial was a little bit wiser than the first company that I used. I looked for the 10 best moving companies and Colonial was about $1,000 more expensive than the other company had quoted. But in the end, I didn't want to be stranded again. Colonial had a much better and more supportive communication structure, where it started out with a coordinator, and the coordinator was great. Then they had a quality person walk me through it. I had a queen and full-size mattress, and I had already put them in plastic. But the moving people did a good job of putting another layer of plastic on them. They also went over every single one of my 60 totes and they taped them closed fully, which was really good.

One that thing that I was very impressed with Colonial was that after everything got picked up, they told me, "Oh, the exact price will depend on the real weight of your item." It's hard to estimate how heavy your stuff really is. But I get it. Trucks spend gas and weight is a big factor for them. So I was given one quote and they said, "Oh, depending on your weight though, it could be more." It was my best estimate, but I knew that that could change.

I got the phone call from the guys in the truck, telling me the weight. Then 15 minutes later, I got a phone call from the quality person telling me the weight of the stuff. I asked how much it would be, and then she connected to the finance person at Colonial. The finance person told me the price. I asked the same question to the truck driver but he said he didn't know the price and that he just knew the weight. But I was on the phone with the finance guy, and then the truck called me back and told me the price again. It's like their broker. For Colonial, even the guys doing the moving are contracted out. So, the guys who picked everything up didn't have logos for Colonial Van Lines. They have their own trucks. But their communication was really aligned and most importantly, the numbers all matched.

Even though there were four different people within a half-hour that were making sure everything was okay, in the end, they all had the same information. So, to the penny, I really appreciated that. Also, Colonial sent quite a few emails, telling me, "Hey, packing reminders, make sure you have this paperwork set aside," which didn't apply to me since I was already moved. But the whole time, I thought this would have been so great to have had Colonial Van Lines during my actual move instead of the first company that I used and then having to shove everything into a storage unit.

    Reviewed Oct. 26, 2021

Updated on 11/08/2021: This is a follow up to another review of Colonial Van Lines which can be found at the link below. **. Here are the key points that I will discussing below:

    1. After the first review was posted, a customer resolution representative reached out to resolve our complaint, but has not solved any problems and has only provided excuses of why Tom and Verraricka said or did what they did.
    a. We were not offered any price reductions due to the false expectations provided by the sales representatives.

    b. We were blamed for the extension of our delivery window from 10/23 – 10/30 to now 10/25 – 11/10.

    2. Most of the updates we receive, which are that there is no update, we have to call the company.

    3. In the last update, we were told that the delivery is expected to occur on 11/10 to 11/11 which is outside of our delivery window of 10/25 – 11/10

    a. We have not been offered any price reductions.

Within 48 hours of posting the first review, Donna **, from the customer resolution department, reached out to find an “amicable solution” to complete our move. So far, it has been nothing but more disappointment and instead of helping us get our belongings, she mainly provides cover for Tomas’ previous actions and false promises/advertising. During our last 2 conversations on 11/2 and 11/5, I had to tell her that I do not care what the reason for our belongings being delayed is, all I want is my stuff and the situation has gotten worse.

Not only do I still not have my belongings, but the last update I received on 11/5/21 was that my belongings would arrive sometime between 11/10 and 11/11. Again, I had to call them to get an update since we had last called on 11/2 and were told that we would get another update on 11/3 but did not get one. Not only were we not given an updated as discussed, but this is now outside of our delivery window. This was the opposite of expectation that Tomas conveyed to us before we signed which was that our stuff would be most likely be delivered by 10/25. The kicker is that we were not offered any discount for this potentially breach of contract by the dispatcher that told us or Donna, who is supposed to be helping us find “an amicable solution.”

When I spoke to Donna on 11/2, I asked her about the why we still did not have an estimated delivery date and she told me that their subcontractor had not scheduled the job yet. Again, this is the opposite of the expectation that Tomas had conveyed. Next, I asked why Colonial was not doing anything to push them to get our belongings delivered faster, she said it was still in the delivery window which Tomas said should not be a concern about. When I asked why our delivery window got extended after we pushed out the delivery date by 2 days, she said that that was what the subcontractor told them.

When she said this, I said that it felt like she was blaming us for the larger window and she immediately said that is not what she intended. I pushed back saying that our original delivery window was from 10/23 to 10/30 and that had I known the position I was currently in, I would not have changed the window. However, Tomas made it seem like it wouldn’t be an issue and that we would have our belongings by 10/25.

My next question, was if we changed our first delivery date to 10/25, then why wouldn’t our window simply get shifted by two days to 10/25 to 11/1 instead of being extended by 1.5 weeks? She said that this was what the subcontractor told them and there was nothing they could do about it. So I asked, are they are they the only subcontractor that does this work and why they didn’t try to find another contractor? I should have also asked why is that we are delayed in the delivery and having to live without our belongings and not receiving or even being an offered a discount while the company that we paid thousands of dollars to has no consequences except us calling them for updates and giving us excuses?

On top of all of this, after they told us that our delivery could potentially be after the delivery window, which would be a breach of contract and they did not even offer us a discount. This is completely unacceptable and no one should use this company. Not only do they give false impressions and expectations to get your business, but after you give them your money and belongings, they do not respect their customers enough to give updates on their own or actually make efforts to find “an amicable solution” such as giving a discount.

Original Review: We hired Colonial Van Lines to move our belongings from Los Angeles to Phoenix. This was our first out of state move and we were nervous and doing as much research as possible. We talked to more than 5 different companies before deciding on Colonial. The reason we picked Colonial was that Tomas ** (Sr. Moving Advisor) seemed very knowledgeable about the process and gave us comfort that everything would happen smoothly. He stated that Colonial would be picking up our belongings and would be able to have them delivered by 10/25 because the move is only from LA to Phoenix and it was less than 400 miles. Colonial would also keep us well informed as to the status and what is going on with our move.

However, to date, none of this has been true. Leading up to the pick up date on 10/22, Verraricka ** (Account Manager) was supposed to call us two days before our scheduled pick up date to let us know what it would be. She first called on 10/20 that she did not know when the estimated pick up date would be. On 10/21, she called that there was no update and that they would not come on 10/22 "for sure." However, United Moving Solutions, the company that Colonial subcontracted to, called later that afternoon and said they would be coming on 10/22 between 8 AM and 11 AM and would call 30 minutes before.

Two issues here, first is that Tomas said that Colonial would have our stuff and failed to disclose that Colonial may be subcontracting to another company to do our move and second, why did we get conflicting messages from Colonial and United? We did not pay Colonial to subcontract out and I would not have chosen Colonial had I known this, but Tomas mislead by not disclosing that this was a possibility.

United Moving Solutions called us at 1122 AM to tell us that the movers were 3 minutes away which was outside of the window that we were provided and not 30 minutes before. We did not receive any communication from Verraricka or Colonial since 10/21 telling us that the movers would not come on 10/22. Our belongings got picked up on 10/22 and we asked the supervisor from United when our belongings would get delivered but he did not know. We called Verraricka but she did not respond so we called Tomas. Tomas reiterated that the move was a short distance and that our belongings should be delivered by 10/25 and that Verraricka would give us an update. We never received an update until we reached out to Tomas on 10/25. Tomas told us that Verricka had tried to call us but we did not receive her call, a voicemail, or even email from her.

We asked Tomas why would she not leave a voicemail or send a follow up email? That seems like very poor customer service and very unprofessional. We called Tomas and he asked Verricka to call us. She called at 258 PM PST while I was in the restroom and this time left a voicemail saying to call her back for an update, but she would be out of the office at 6 PM EST. Why would you call at 258 PM PST (558 PM EST) to say that you will be out of the office at 6 PM EST? Luckily, I immediately called back and she picked up. She told me that there was no update and to call United Moving Solutions tomorrow. Why should I have to call? Isn't that her job and why am I the customer being told to do her job for her? This is very unprofessional. Not only am I chasing Colonial for more information, but they are actually telling me that I have to do their job for them to get information from their subcontractor.

It is 10/26 and I called United Moving Solutions who said that our pick up window is 10/25 to 11/10 and we would get an update on 10/29. I also called Tomas but he did not pick up. This move has been a terrible experience and had I known the following, I would not have chosen Colonial:

    1) Tomas was very reassuring that there would be no problems with our move and that our stuff would be delivered by 10/25.

    2) Tomas failed to disclose that he would be subcontracting the move out and while describing the process said that Colonial would pick up our belongings and keep it in their possession.

    3) Verraricka was very unprofessional by not doing what Tomas described as procedure, such as letting us know 2 days before our scheduled pick up date when the actual date would be and keeping us informed about the delivery date.

    4) Verraricka told us that United Moving Solution would not pick up our belongings on 10/22 and United Moving Solutions told us the opposite and did pick up our belongings without any updates from Colonial.

    5) United Moving Solutions came after the window that they provided, not Colonial, and instead of calling us 30 minutes before, called us 3 minutes before.

    6) Verraricka was supposed to update us on the estimated delivery date. She claimed she called but did not leave a voicemail until we asked Tomas why she never left one. When she did, it was to say that she would be out of the office in 2 minutes. Also, she did not have any information for us and told me that I had to call the subcontractor myself to get an update.

    7) I called United Moving Solution and they told us our belongings were sitting in a warehouse and because our delivery window was 10/25 to 11/10, we would get an update on 10/29. This is the complete opposite of what Tomas had been telling us because he made multiple assurances that it was a short move distance and our stuff would arrive by 10/25.

Overall, I feel like the information we were given by Tomas ** of Colonial was inaccurate and set unrealistic expectations in our minds. We made a decision to choose Colonial based on this false information and expectation and I hope that other people do not have to endure this.

Their customer service is great. They communicated effectively and the quote was close and on point. The only hiccup was there was a shortage in transportation and diesel and stuff like that so we had to work around getting another truck to come out to help us out on time. But everything worked out in the end. They worked with us and got us over some hurdles. From the time I called them, they got it all done within the three weeks’ timeframe. Also, the packers they had to pack our house up were faster than we thought and they were very thorough. Nothing was broken, missing, or lacking and everything was fully intact.

From the beginning all the way towards the end, my experience with Colonial was fine. However, there were a few things at the end with a little discrepancy with the amount of money and how they loaded the truck. A few of my things got damaged, too. But other than that, it was way better than the other two trucking companies that I had. The guy that dropped my stuff off in North Carolina was fine, too.

For pickup, I was prepared because I packed up almost a year ago. But for delivery, I wasn't prepared because I asked them to deliver it at a certain time and they delivered it a week before. So, I had to get prepared. They gave me a certain date. They asked me was it okay. They called me. I said no, that wasn't a good time because I didn't have the money right then and there. But then they came that day anyway. So I scrambled around. They were an hour away from my house, so I had no choice but to get the stuff.

We were initially going with Bekins because it was right in Tiverton but Colonial immediately called me and said they would match the price and give us a better deal than Bekins. We ended up going with them and we had a rep that was okay. My biggest disappointment, however, was it wasn't Colonial Van Lines that pulled up out front of my house. It was an independent contractor, Little Johnny, that they hired and that was not a good experience.

Little Johnny was very rough with the furniture and when they took my king-sized mattress out, the guy insist upon that it would fit through half of a five-foot slider. He shouldn't have had that jammed through there but should have taken the other door off and given the people enough space to get the mattress through. By the time I got down the bottom of the deck steps, they had already taped up the bottom of the thing so I couldn't see what had happened. Five months later when I got the mattress, there was a considerable amount of scratches in the material. I told Colonial about it.

I was not happy with their guy. He flipped my file cabinet over. I asked him that if he was flipping it over, how was I going to get the drawer open? I got the file cabinet and it has a big dent on the top of it. Right now, I don't even know if I have all my stuff because we also have a pod. We decided that we weren't going to let Colonial move everything, just our furniture. I still haven't unpacked a few things so I haven't filed a report with Colonial yet.

I would not recommend Colonial up in New Jersey but I would for the one down here in Florida. Up in New Jersey, my experience was terrible. If Colonial has that much business that they have to hire people to do certain jobs for them, the client should be told that it's not going to be a Colonial truck that's pulling up out front. The lady that came to do the inventory was very fast and nice enough. But it seemed like she was used to Little Johnny and the way he was. When the young man came to deliver our stuff, it wasn't a Colonial truck again. But I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with them down here. They were great and they let me inspect everything that they brought into the house.

Colonial kept the file cabinet up in Wyckoff, New Jersey, which I couldn't understand. They moved it from their pod down to Fort Lauderdale. These guys, again, moved it from that pod to their facility here then into their truck. From the care that they took, taking everything out of the truck and placing it in the house, I'm sure that every nick that was in a piece of furniture was done in New Jersey.

Donna contacted me and was able to promptly resolve the issues I had during my move. Thank you!

    Original Review: Oct. 22, 2021

I did a long-distance move with Colonial Van Lines. When I talked to the reps, they sounded pretty reputable and I just went with them. What I paid ended up being more than the initial quote. I feel like the estimate they give is not very accurate. They have a standard when you say you have a living room set where you have a sofa, love chair, and a recliner and they have a standard weight. But in fact, it could be a lot heavier depending on the brand and the size. I have some very sturdy, heavy furniture so I ended up paying a bit more because of the weight.

Colonial can improve their scheduling. They give you a three-day window in which they're supposed to pick up your household, and lots of time that goes over that. Then, if you need storage for a couple of days, there’s another extra charge. Even though they pick your product past the window and deliver past the window, you don't get that back. There was also a couple of things missing. I just didn't feel like going through the hassle.

She took a personal interest in my complete experience from beginning to end, which ultimately led to a remedy satisfactory to both parties. Her work as a “claims specialist” brought a positive closure to my claim to which I am grateful, which also speaks of CVL’s integrity to “make things right”. I just needed to give them, CVL, the opportunity to do so. Thank you Donna, and the CVL team who worked together to bring a positive end to our situation.

    Original Review: Oct. 20, 2021

In June of this year (2021) I contracted with Colonial Van Lines to move me out of California 500 miles north. The initial set up was smooth. Communication was acceptable. The tailspin started when my estimated weight which was done by a Colonial rep, was was upped nearly 4K pounds. I was told by the Colonial rep not to be concerned about the estimated weights as the true weight minus truck weight would produce an more accurate weight for billing. Well well well. On moving day, I discover the actual movers were subcontracted to another outfit, United Moving Solutions. The driver acknowledged the truck scales had fouled up on their ticket and weighed the truck excessively thus rendering my true weighted cost of no value. Convenient huh?

I had originally scheduled for a large touring motorbike to be hauled, but decided to drive it ahead of time. No reduction in estimated cost (900lbs worth) but here’s the kicker; when the truck showed up for the move which was on time, the truck had no hydraulic lift on the back! How in the world were these moving “professionals” going to push 900lbs on two wheels up an 24” wide ramp? Glad I rode that bike out ahead of time, because guaranteed they’d not be able to load that thing and I’d be in a pickle as to what to do, or they’d drop it. The fun continues; delivery was on time as well, congratulations! The three fellows actually doing the move worked their tails off. So much so I encountered several damaged pieces of furniture.

After the move, and after I provided all evidences of damage, Colonial seemingly didn’t want to pay out on their $.060 cents per pound per item claim. My estimation was three times higher based on universal moving weights of a variety of household goods. The rep today, 125 days post claim told me some items were deemed “cosmetically damaged” and thus were not compensated the whopping $0.60 cents per pound, but more like $0.10 cents pp. This information is intentionally withheld verbally from the customer but evidently it’s in the fine print (he says) somewhere. At this point I’m not up to small claims and the time it would take, and this outfit being located on the east coast makes it even more of an obstacle to tangle with. I’ll take my tiny compensation- but reluctantly and move forward chalking it up to another bad experience in life.

This outfit, Colonial Van Lines was-as is here on this C.A. site-recommended as a top 5 reputable moving company. Read up on Colonial Van Lines at the Better Business Bureau Website and you’ll get a clear picture of this company and their lack of ethic. Seems over the last three years there have been unsatisfactory reviews every other day. Some to a resolution of sorts like mine :( and others not so much. Personally this moving company-Colonial Van Lines- should not be listed as a trusted contractor based on reviews.

The two young men who came and did the moving did a very good job. My car was supposed to be transported. It wasn't supposed to be driven. The day they were supposed to come and get my car, the truck that would move my car broke down. So they didn't have any way to move my car. And they volunteered to drive my car. So the one young man drove my car from West Virginia to Maryland. But he got a ticket in it that I didn't know about. He didn't know about it because I got the ticket in the mail. So I paid that. They have cameras everywhere here. Those two men live in Maryland, so they should know.

As far as moving the car, the first time I moved years ago, the movers put my car on the back of the truck with my furniture. So I knew everything was being moved at the same time and my car would be okay. Colonial Van Lines said they don't do that anymore. I would have felt much more comfortable with Colonial actually moving my car with my furniture instead of subcontracting that out for someone else to move my car because Colonial has no control over another company, how they do business and whether their trucks break down or not. But if Colonial was actually doing it, then Colonial would control it.

Even had they pulled it, I would have felt much better. But for me to have to let somebody drive my car here, I wasn't comfortable doing it, but I had no choice. And I had to end up paying $675 for the young man to drive my car here, which was ridiculous. I should not have had to pay for my car to be transported when it was driven here, and I had to pay for two tanks of gas. So it ended up being closer to 775. Other than that, they stayed in contact with me. It was a bit hectic trying to get everything done down to the wire. But my car was okay, and the furniture was in good shape.

The person that I talked to was helpful and kind. My husband said the driver of the truck was hardworking and nice. And he had two helpers with him that were also very good. They loaded the truck in a good time and they were off. My belongings were delivered in the amount of time that they said they would be delivered at. There were a few nicks here and there, which were to be expected. However, I didn't appreciate that the person who delivered our furniture was the one asking for our credit card information. He had a different name. It was Rodeo Moving. I assume he is a private contractor. I expected my credit card to be billed by Colonial Van Lines and it wasn't. It felt awkward and long. And when I sent it to him, he was kind and very helpful, but it felt weird.

I was satisfied with the pickup and the delivery of my belongings, but I'm dissatisfied with the whole estimate and the time I spent talking to Jay. We took pictures. He looked it over. I was on the phone with him for an hour. And for it to be that much difference, $3,500 was very upsetting. The original quote I got was 8,200, then I added an item that I noticed that was not in the pictures, which was a fairly heavy hall table, and the quote automatically went up to $1,000. I thought that would cover everything. It seemed proactive, but not really, because that wasn't even an issue. The quote was 30% higher than the original estimate. I was not prepared for that.

I know they go by poundage, but he was a bit better at his job than that, when he looks at a storage container, and I had pictures and he estimates the number of boxes and the pounds per box. And he has been doing this for a long time, which he said he had, I thought he would get a bit closer but it wasn't. It's not a huge problem for us to pay. But what if we couldn't? What if that was all the money we had to move? I would never recommend the company because we read reviews that said this happened to other people. So we were hoping that it wouldn't happen to us, but it did. The percentage of the overcharge was significant. I'm not satisfied.

Updated on 12/19/2021: Colonial promises but does not deliver. For 2 days they could not find any day labor in Nashville to pack my goods and load the truck!! Amazingly, as a last resort, I was able to find day laborers and hired them for our move from Nashville. At the destination they found a crew that lasted 1 ½ hours for unloading. The fact that I had to rent a motel room and pay for food 3 days longer than their estimate apparently is not their problem – they are not reimbursing me! BE VERY CAREFUL WITH COLONIAL’S ESTIMATES ON LOADING AND DELIVERY!!! If they miss it by several days it is “not our fault. These are only estimates”.

Updated on 10/30/2021: I have waited to respond to Colonial’s reply until I gave them a chance to resolve our moving issues. Their response confirms – DO NOT USE COLONIAL!! Just a brief recap – in our move we paid friends to pack our kitchen wares because Colonial couldn’t find packers!!?? To meet Colonial’s move-date commitment, we paid day laborers to load our moving van because Colonial couldn’t find any help?? We paid for 3 days of motel and meals because Colonial couldn’t find unloaders at our destination even though the van was in our new town. When Colonial personnel did show up to unload, the day laborers they hired quit after 1 ½ hours of work and I spent 6 hours helping to unload the van. Oh, I almost forgot, Colonial would not release or help unload our goods until we paid them in full.

On 10/11 after 3 weeks of emails and social media postings, Colonial finally contacted me. They were very apologetic and promised immediate action. I documented my costs and just asked that they reimburse me for the packing, loading and unloading services that I paid Colonial to perform but they did not deliver, for our additional room & meals when they did not meet their committed delivery date and for the movement of the “overflow” (that amounted to 25% of the move) from their poor, on-site estimating and unprofessional, unsupervised packers. That was two weeks ago and I have heard NOTHING! Now I guess I will be forced to seek alternate ways of recouping my out-of-pocket expenses. Their follow-up is just like their moving service – PROMISES WITH NO FOLLOW UP, NO COMMUNICATION AND NO ACTION!!!!

Original Review: Colonial Van Lines - DO NOT USE!!! No communication, didn't keep promises. My wife and I have moved 12 times and have NEVER experienced such a lack of responsiveness or customer concern. Colonial used 3 different crews on 3 different days to pack - because no crew would come back - and only packed ~25% of what they had estimated needed to be packed. We had to beg 8 friends to finish packing our goods. We also had to hire our own loaders to finish loading the van and when the van finally arrived 3 days late (with no communication on the actual arrival) we were required to pay in-full prior to the unloading or they were keeping our furniture.

The crew they hire to unload lasted 2 hours and then quit. The single Colonial rep - who was great - and I spent 6 hours (until 11PM) unloading the van. Since the move I have called and sent 3 emails wanting to discuss our bill and the performance of the move - Guess what: NO ONE HAS CALLED BACK! Never, never, never use Colonial!!!!

I had reached out to several moving companies and Colonial was the one that kept in touch the most. They were very helpful. The only thing that I did not like was they didn't come out and do an overall assessment. I know they couldn't because of COVID. But I did not know that every single box was counted. I didn't know how to get it down and I didn't know if it was a truckload. Every time they called, they would ask me, "How many boxes you got now?" Then they said, "Now you owe us another $200" Then the next thing I knew, I got 80 boxes. They said, "That's another $150." Every time I talked to them, it was a different amount. So, it was hard to judge for me for planning purposes on how to do it because I didn't know.

I'm ex-military, so every single time I moved, it was free for me. This was the first time I had to pay for them myself. So, we ended up having to consolidate boxes to keep under the box count, so they wouldn't call me again. But that was the only thing that bothered me. Everything was packed and they were ready to go. The move went well. The movers that came out were great. They packed everything. They were cordial and explained stuff. The lead driver really knew how to pack a box or pack a truck. Then he had to go get a trailer to put in some extra stuff. That cost more money. But overall, it got here and everything was in one piece.

We liked Colonial Van Lines' availability but we had some issues being that the rep did not accurately estimate how much space we were going to need in the moving truck. We did a walkthrough and a box count but the box count was apparently not representative of the size of the boxes. We still ended up having to rent a separate truck to bring a good portion of our things with us to Florida because they did not fit in the moving truck and there was no way to get them in. That was a significant $6,000 issue. But Kennedy Trucking did a great job.

Colonial had the best value and a timeframe. The representative was great, too. However, I asked to make sure the transport wasn't going to be sourced out to a third party and they said they had their own line, but it was sourced out. I move every couple of years of my job, so I've had the bad experience where it was sourced out and it was horrible. This time, I was very fortunate that the third party they sourced it out to was a very good company. But going forward, I prefer not to have it sourced out for the third one. Other than that, the moving crew was awesome and I will go through their company directly next time.

So, I didn't really know who knew what was going on. If it had been just one or two people, then I would have felt more comfortable with it. But I kept getting different names. But the moving crew was great. I had to ask them to wait a couple of hours. I didn't get my key from the complex. Although it definitely threw them off, they were very patient and helpful. The final cost was also not too different from the quote. It was a little bit more, but not an egregious amount.

Then our move down here was great. It was two guys that moved us in. They were very diligent and careful of everything. There were a couple of things that cracked or broke in the interim, but that's to be expected and they joked with me. “Where are you going to put all these boxes?” We moved from a large home to a smaller place right here.

I was impressed by the step-by-step, with telling us that they would have to do a shuttle and this would be the price. I needed to know upfront what the pricing was going to be. I use Colonial and I've referred them many times. I've moved a lot in my lifetime abroad and in the United States. I would refer Colonial to anybody. I was satisfied. I would use them again.

    Original Review: Sept. 28, 2021

I'm very dissatisfied with Colonial Van Lines. We sold our house on the 17th of August. I told them that the 16th was the last possible date to pick up what needed to be moved. The reason I've dealt with several movers is that we were distributing our belongings among our children. This particular shipment was going to Vermont. They did not come on the 16th. I did not hear from them on the 14th and 15th. On the 16th, I called them up. They said, "We can't come today. We can come a day after tomorrow." I said, "That won't work." I had to rent a storage unit. I had to talk to the man who was there to take the remaining bits and pieces off to the junkyard to move my son's things to the units. He said that wasn't his job. It hadn't been in his arrangement. So, I had to pay him extra to do that.

I got back to the house. I realized they had not taken three ladders and a very heavy Franklin stove, which was supposed to be part of that particular move. My real estate agent very kindly moved the stove out of the garage and into the driveway and covered it with tarp overnight. The ladders were already outside so that they would not be in the house when it was sold the following day. I had to make arrangements for the following day with somebody to take those two things to the storage unit. Then I was way over the weekend. They finally sent somebody the following week to pick them up and take them to Vermont, where they eventually arrived safe and sound, except for one ladder, which was too big to fit in the storage unit. And I had to jettison that and pay the fellow an additional sum for taking that away.

Colonial Van Lines' customer service rep was extremely helpful. He got me a quote fast. He went online and looked at where I was selling my house, got all the pictures, gave me a quote, and everything was good. It was very efficient and effective. The only thing is I had a timeframe that I needed to move in and it did not get done in the timeframe that was agreed and was in the contract. They blamed it on a storm that came through. We had a hurricane, went to South Louisiana, but it didn't hit where I was located at. The move got backed up a few days and I had to leave. I had to send somebody else to meet them there. They picked up five days past the last day of the timeframe to pick up.

Also, I got glass and a TV that were broken. They were supposed to package up my TVs and a 52-inch was broken. But the flat screen was kind of older so I didn't do a claim. One other thing that I did not like was the truck driver kept staying in contact with me and I wasn't getting anything from my rep. I was getting everything from the truck driver. Whenever I’d tell him my concerns, he was like, “I can't do anything about that.” I felt like my rep was supposed to watch my shipment and they did not communicate with me. I left messages and they just kept sending back the truck driver to talk to me.

The two movers were also wonderful. An older man and a younger man. They were so professional and so good all the way around when they were moving everything in. They went out to my son's house. A good portion of the boxes had been labeled with his name and they delivered to his garage. I had a few select pieces and a whole lot of boxes and books. The original pricing that Colonial Van Lines gave me was pretty comparable to what I figured it was gonna cost me to have my stuff shipped. It ended up costing a lot more than what I was originally told, but there wasn't much else I can do about it. During the move, I was a little ticked off because I told them to get the truck in. I said, “I know you can get the truck in, but you have to bring a regular van truck. Do not bring a truck that has a drop-down trailer." There was a little embankment hill they had to go up. They still sent a drop-down trailer. So, I had to pay an extra $600 because they had to walk so far to haul my stuff. I was on the phone quite a few times with them. They said they'd review it but they didn't do anything about it. So, I wasn't real happy with that part.

The guys that came were great. They were very nice guys. But they were not with Colonial. They were with another company that Colonial contracts with. They had to pack some of my stuff. There were a few things I didn't have boxed, but they had brought some extra wardrobe-sized boxes that they kind of threw my stuff in. I didn't have time to label it, so I don't even know what’s where. It’s still in my CONEX container. I’m staying with my older brother and I had a CONEX container delivered to put my stuff in until I can get a house. My brother made a ramp for them to load everything because I thought they were gonna pull up the regular driveway.

The only thing is they should have given me a little more information. They should have suggested, “Hey, get some wardrobe boxes and put your stuff in it, and then you can label it ahead of time.” I would have done that. If they had advised me ahead of time, I would have boxed my stuff up so those guys wouldn’t have had to do it. I had to pay extra money for them boxing this stuff up for me. If they had given me a little more insight on boxing stuff, that would have helped a lot.

Total Disaster. DO NOT USE. Very friendly and seemingly helpful on phone before I signed contract. The price is only an estimate and can change. They subbed out the job to a local mover (from over 100 miles away). Our stuff was picked up and I was told to sign the handwritten inventory after 4 hours mostly labeled as misc. box.

Our stuff went to storage as we sold our home but did not have a new house identified. It was taken 100+ miles away from our old house and 5 times that from where we were staying so we had no access even though they took all my wife’s clothes (communication issue) but essentially impossible to resolve. When we closed on new house 5 months later our stuff was delivered. Some stuff examples dining room table and tv stand/bookcase were clearly damaged, some outside equipment, pictures,… I was told to file a claim and they left. As we unpacked, we realized some stuff was missing. Some power tools, we had 4 beds but only one blanket, we somehow no longer owned a single towel. Piano had three of four wheels as did a couple bed frames. Pretty sure we will never know exact list of missing items.

As instructed, I filed a claim with the moving company that did the work. After an extended period, I was told no the claim needs to go through Colonial. OK, I redid all the paperwork and sent it to Colonial. After another extended period I was told the claim was denied because: the table was already damaged (untrue). The TV bookcase unit was not covered because it was wrong type wood, and I should have identified all the missing stuff before the movers left (this was probably the most ridiculous claim of all, we were to unpack over 100 boxes and remember where every one of our possessions were packed 5 months ago and complete that before I signed papers and movers left???).

I appealed and after shorted delay they agreed to pay $133 in claim on a $8K+ bill. Oh, but they wouldn’t pay it. We had to go back to the other company to get the money. After a total of 6 months, I got a check that covered one piano wheel and a couple towels. What I have learned:

    1) Don’t use Colonial or any of these large movers that have more people working the phones than moving trucks.
    2) Contact local movers and compare quotes and reviews (total cost will be lower and satisfaction certainly should be better).
    3) To inventory and number boxes.
    4) To require movers to list and show anything they consider damaged before it leaves the house.

    5) How to install wheel on a piano.

Colonial was more conscious of my budget than the other companies, and Lauren and her supervisor were extremely responsive. There were some problems early on with emails getting sent to spam because Google interprets a lot of the advertising and marketing emails from Colonial as spam. I lost a lot of the emails from one of Colonial's accounts service. But they were very responsive over the phone. We almost switched services but conversing with Lauren and her supervisor was enough to keep us going. Everything made it through okay and overall, we're very happy with the service.

The driver was a very nice guy. When he showed up, our street was too small for the semi, and I had to help him find a parking lot somewhere in the city where he could park the semi without permission. We had to rent a U-Haul. So that took me the whole day. I was surprised that the driver hadn't received enough support. For example, he could have used Google Maps to check how big is the street. So that was disappointing. I tried to see if the shuttle service that got attached at the end of the bill could be ameliorated because of all the work that I put in myself trying to help the driver. But I received no help in that way. But other than that, we got what we needed.

I liked working with Colonial and the first person, Pin to Pin, that they sent to me. I would hire them any day of the week. Except that they kept bugging me to pay them. I told them that I paid half to Colonial. I paid then half of that half to Pin to Pin and they were hassling me to pay the remainder. I didn't appreciate them doing that like I wasn't going to pay them. That was not necessary. I told them that as soon as that truck drives up in front of my house, I will hit pay, which I did.

The last person when I got here was an absolute disaster. The guy showed up with no help, so he sat out in front of my house for hours, then half the day was gone. He brought a dog in 100-degree weather so we babysat his dog while I was trying to tell him where things went. He didn't care where they went or which up arrow was. Then the mover was just moving things to the end of the truck. So then this guy gets a stomachache and has to leave.

Two more younger guys came, which was good, but they didn't care where they put the things. It was a nightmare, just a tangle of boxes. Then they left. The driver came and said his help left so he was all by himself. Some of it was heavy and got left in the hallways at my house. If I didn't have my young daughter and her young boyfriend here come over a few days -- and I'm climbing over everything to move things around to where they were supposed to be and set up furniture -- I would have been in a big jam. Getting ahold of people at Colonial at times was challenging. But when I did, everybody was nice, professional, and helpful.

Colonial had a good price and I got a quote right away. Everybody seemed to be easy to work with. I had excellent communications with the rep. He called me all the time and we emailed back and forth a lot. He was really good. We wanted to pick up within a certain week in August and get the move delivered the following week. I gave Colonial the number of the warehouse where my stuff was stored. All they had to do is pick it up from the dock so it was really easy to load the truck. The movers appreciated that and they worked with the warehouse owner to time everything just right. They called me from the road, told me where they were and gave me an ETA. They got here the first day of the timeframe that I gave them, which was fine.

However, it seemed Colonial had trouble finding guys to unload the truck on my end. They just pick up labor wherever they can. If I were managing Colonial Van Lines, I would get a pool of laborers in each major metro area that they could rely on instead of calling somebody at the last minute to unload my stuff.

I was at a very strict timeline and they did not do the pickup till the day before the last day I could do it. But once I talked to a supervisor, it got better. He checked in on me. Also, the driver of the truck was amazing. He got here in less than a week with my stuff.

I didn't know it had to be five business days. I had eight days but it was over the weekend. I was very disappointed about that. Also, it's too expensive. Colonial could get my move done within the timeframe I needed. Customer service was all fine except for the people who packed up the stuff in my house. They had me sign a whole bunch of stuff that was blank, including a different estimate, and it seemed sketchy to me. They estimated a different weight than what was estimated on the day and that would cost a lot more. When I finally got the final invoice, that number wasn't there. It was the normal number that I negotiated with the representatives over the phone. But it was stressful to have the guy say it was gonna be $2,000 more.

The other thing was, I kept having to ask Colonial for a two-day window instead of a three-day window for when the movers were going to show up and move. I could only reserve the spots in front of my house for two days. I kept calling the rep and I kept getting voicemail. Finally, I called to cancel. Once I did that, they escalated it up to some supervisor who was able to finally get me back down to two days. But even then, they sent me something to sign. The normal process is I can sign stuff online and get it back to Colonial automatically. But this time, I had to print out the document and fax it to them. It was a real pain.

Effectively, Colonial accomplished the task but I wouldn't use the service again because it was too much trouble. There were too many calls and they were too late in their callback.

The first quote was pretty good then once the movers got there, they quoted me a price that was a little higher than what I was first quoted because I wasn't sure about how much I had in the unit when they went to look at it. I was fine with that. They moved my stuff from Greenville, North Carolina to Newport News, Virginia. They packed everything in one day and brought it to me that afternoon. It didn't take them long to unpack the boxes. That worked out pretty well. I would use Colonial again.

When I called, the gentleman I spoke to was very fair. I gave him the dimensions of the items and the pricing was approximately $1,500 under the other companies. I went with him, which is the biggest mistake of my life. The head guy who was to pick us up in packing was very good but he did not watch his men work and did not direct them properly. The helpers did not wrap one piece of furniture and that ruined about four pieces of furniture. Also, I have an electric bed and they took it apart. They took out the brain of the bed and they put it somewhere. Why would they take the brain and the remote and leave it in a bookcase that was open? It could have been lost.

Then, they said that the pickup date would be on the 19th or earlier. I asked them to please make it the 19th of the month because we’re handicapped and it takes us a little longer. That took about five conversations back and forth and they told me to read the contract and what they can and can't do. They also said they have a 10 to 15-day window to deliver and when I called the building, the only opening they had was on the 28th of the month, which meant I ordered them to hold off until around the 25th. They said they can't do that and they would have to put the furniture in storage. Put it in storage for nine days at $300 a day?

They had to hire a mover down here and get two storage rooms. This cost me over $3,500. And when they came down to pick up the stuff to bring it to the house, these guys loaded the truck and about seven items were missing. These are people I would never ever hire again and because of that experience, I would not recommend Colonial to anybody. All they’re after is to get your money like anybody else.

Do you have low blood pressure that you're trying to kick up a notch or 20? Are you an extreme masochist? Do you enjoy being ignored and/or lied to? Have you always wanted to have an attorney but never had a reason? Do you enjoy spending thousands of dollars to be treated horribly and never responded to? If you identify with any of these, then this is the moving company for you!

I paid these clowns TWENTY thousand dollars to move me across the country. Maryland to California. The first day they showed up late, looked around and assured me that they could load everything up in my home and my storage unit in one day. They show up two hours late the next morning, pack for a few hours, take a two hour lunch and then proceed to tell my husband and I that they aren't going to finish loading the truck today, but no worries!! They will be there first thing in AM to finish. Which should at most take an hour or two. NOPE. They show up late again, then proceed to tell us that even though my inventory was correct, there isn't enough room on the truck for everything. SERIOUSLY.

They proceed to put everything into an existing storage unit I already had (that was also supposed to go with us, so instead of emptying my storage unit I AM STILL PAYING FOR IT.) for which WE had to rent a UHAUL FOR THEM otherwise it would have been a three day load instead of a two day load, when it was supposed to be a ONE DAY load. We had rented a van that I was paying for and had to return in California on a specific date, so the ONE extra day already put us behind.

This was the beginning of JUNE. JUNE. It is now AUGUST and no one has contacted me in WEEKS. I called EVERY SINGLE DAY for a MONTH and either got hung up on (yes you read that correctly) by customer service or NO ONE responded to my calls, emails and messages. The only person who even tried to help me was a dispatch worker, and when he routed a truck to pick everything up, they TOOK HIS SCHEDULING POWERS AWAY FROM HIM. It is now AUGUST and after having an attorney I had to hire send them a letter last week demanding they pick up and bring the rest of our belongings to us, still NOTHING. No response. Crickets. I won't even get into how many pieces are damaged. Expensive vintage Bernhardt furniture. RUINED. If you hate yourself and everything you own, hire them. Otherwise...hire a literal barrel of monkeys to move your stuff, they will do a far superior job.

So, this 5-star review is for Donna and her help, and not representative of the rest of my experience with Colonial Van Lines.

    Original Review: Aug. 5, 2021

Throughout the entire process, I spoke to five different people. They each had different answers to the questions that I had. Some people didn't know what they were talking about. The very first person I spoke to couldn't answer a lot of my questions. I spoke with a salesperson and a coordinator, who when I asked a question said that I shouldn't call him to ask questions in the future and that I should call someone else. Getting information and getting them to answer my calls was a bit frustrating. You would call and leave a message and they wouldn't call back. I wasn't happy with the way they answered all my questions and provided help.

The moving crew was supposed to give us at least 24 hours’ notice about when they were going to make the delivery after they picked up our stuff. They gave us less than 24 hours' notice so that was irritating. They picked up on a Tuesday and delivered on a Friday, so it didn't take a long time. I asked them if they could give me a more specific idea of when they would deliver and they couldn't even give me that. I was traveling down there and all of a sudden on Thursday, they said they were going to be there first thing in the morning on Friday.

The move was from Wisconsin to Texas. The moving crew damaged several of our items which was frustrating. The damaged items included some bookshelves, a lampshade that got cracked, and another lamp where a piece of it was broken off. There was a box that was labeled fragile that we packed really well and that was completely smashed to bits on the inside. What was provided in compensation was not enough to replace any of those items.

I got everything taken care of and the person was very clear on what was going to happen and when. The quote I got was also accurate. I had done some research beforehand and it seemed about right for the distance and what I told them I was moving. They weren't crazy overcharging me. I did a similar move earlier with a different company and it was right in line with that.

I was sent an email a couple of days before the pickup date to let me know the window. I was then called a couple of hours before the moving crew got there. They pulled up with the truck behind my apartment building because that's where the least amount of steps were. They did a double-check to make sure none of my boxes were gonna burst open. They taped all the flaps down a little bit more and hauled it out. The crew was really nice and very efficient. They did a good job. Omega did what they said they were going to do and that was all I needed.

They gave me a pickup window and I had to wait to the very last minute to find out when they were actually going to be there. Also, they told me it was gonna be a big 18-Wheeler but it ended up being a smaller box truck. They loaded the truck and I could see that they had things intermixed. And I thought it was gonna be direct but they took other stops and the drop-off was quite delayed. They were at the 11th hour of their window to deliver it to me. It was a good couple of weeks waiting for my stuff and they broke and lost a couple of things. They tried to track down the lost things but they couldn’t find them. They said I need to submit a form. From pickup to dropoff, and all points in between, this was a hugely disappointing experience. We were notified literally 10:30PM the night before by a text message from their subcontractor that our pickup would take place the following morning, despite being previously notified by Colonial that the pickup would be on a different (later) date. Fortunately we were ready and the pickup took place, but the Colonial account manager (one of many we were assigned) was not aware of it since we got a call a couple of days later on what they thought the pickup day was wondering "how the pickup was going". After the pickup, the goal became trying to get a delivery date/window - which proved to be an agonizing experience.

As other reviewers have noted, calls to their customer service center were almost never returned and emails were never responded to/acknowledged - even when I received an email from them, ASKING me to respond or call. Their telephone menu system is beyond horrible, sometimes just randomly disconnecting the call or taking it upon itself to schedule a callback (which of course never came). In terms of a delivery date, through some online research and after being completely frustrated with the lack of communication from Colonial I identified and contacted their subcontractor directly, got a firm delivery date, and the delivery took place. Some of our items were damaged and we have filed a claim but as of this writing have not heard any resolution. I could go on with additional examples, but suffice it to say that based on our experience I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere if you're shopping for a long distance mover.
