Watch out for something they call the "long-carry." It means how far from their truck they have to carry the items. It's not clear how this charge is determined and remains a mystery to me still. They reduced the price of my "long-carry" after I asked about it. Make sure you know how this will affect your overall total.

I came across some moving providers via Google. I shopped at four and their pricing was aggressive. I dealt with three people from Colonial and the first person I spoke with, Teresa, was thorough. I knew their price was a little low but it was fair, so I went with them. Pickup and delivery went well. They were a little understaffed on the pickup though. They sent two people and both were really good and knew what they were doing, but with the amount of stuff that we had, they should've added an extra guy. I live in a high-rise building and you're only allotted two hours. They went over the two hours, but fortunately, I didn't get a fine, so it worked out.
The delivery was easy. They hammered it quick, so that went well. There was still a window of possible days it could be here and it was nice to have it here on the first day they they said it would be. Moving is very stressful and I moved out of state, but overall, they did a good job. If I were to move again, which I don't plan to do for quite some time, I definitely would consider using them again.

I called a couple of companies, but Colonial came in at a better price and it’s who we stuck with. We were taking care of older people in Arizona that both passed away last year, so we relocated back to our home state to be closer to family. The coordinator was thorough. Things changed once we got stuff loaded and reweighed, but there was constant communication. If anything changed, it was easy to call them and fix stuff. We went over by 300 pounds, which was almost a $2,000 difference, but other than that, it went wonderful. There weren't any surprises on moving day. It was also nice to know that people are always checking in on us.

Colonial's price was good and my contact person, Lauren, was wonderful and very informative. She answered all my questions and returned my calls when I called her. Brandi was great too. We just relocated and I was 98% prepared. They were supposed to be there on a certain day between 1:00 and 4:00. They called and said they were not gonna be there until 6:00 and then they said it wouldn't be until 7:00. We told them to just come the next day. I get that stuff happens and that delay was the only problem that we had. Brandi also kept me informed and she was on them all the time to get it done.

Another moving company did an estimate for me before and it felt like a bait and switch. They showed up, loaded all my stuff and said that the move was gonna cost X amount more and that it would cost even more to move my things in the rain. They also said it would cost more to move things 10 more feet and more to put my things upstairs. They had all my stuff held hostage. That company also said they were gonna deliver my things on a certain day and they came a month later.
When I was looking for a mover online in the comments section, I saw that Colonial addressed every one of the complaints I saw. People would then say Colonial comes back and fixes everything that was wrong. That was a good step in making me feel confident that they were gonna do the right thing. They didn't do any of the things the previous company did. As long as I gave them a comprehensive list of my things, they estimate on the high side based on weight in order to give me a realistic and fair price for my move.
It is fair to estimate everything based on weight. I ended up coming in underweight and paying less. That is a very good business model. During the move, there were a couple of things that got broken and Colonial could have done slightly better with that. The guys who did the deliveries were all very nice and I've been happy with them. They were there when they said they were going to be. Colonial wasn't perfect, but they were as close to it as they could be.

I had a very good experience with Colonial Van Lines. They were excellent. I moved to Florida. I couldn’t afford Staten Island anymore. My maintenance fees were skyrocketing, and they raised my assessment fees. The movers were great. They were kinda late, and they reimbursed me for being late. With this COVID junk going around, I can understand them being late. The service was great. Nothing was destroyed. I have a very expensive curio, which I really was very concerned about. It’s absolutely without a scratch. It’s completely glass. So I’m very impressed with how they took care of everything. I have a very expensive art. They wrapped that up beautifully. Then when they got here, they made sure that I had everything where I wanted it. They put everything together. They were great.
I was unpacking stuff. I was looking and I thought I had a floor lamp missing. I had one carton left of clothes. I said, “No, I emptied all my clothes out. Maybe it’s somebody else’s clothes.” I opened it up, and it’s my floor lamp. So, I had to call them up. They were filing a report and I had to tell them not to do a report. I found it. I recommended Colonial Van Lines to two of my friends because they’ll be moving to Florida in December. I told them, “You should better call now and make sure that you could him.”

It was cheaper to go with Colonial Van Lines. We were relocated to another state. Everything was in storage and just shipped to another storage unit. It was easy-breezy. I dealt with multiple people, but they were all nice. The cost was off a little bit. I didn't know how many boxes I had, but it cost a little bit more than what was expected. The only thing was I didn't know that it would take a long time. I didn't know they would tag each merchandise and put it in the truck. It took about four hours. It would have been better if someone told me that. I wasn't prepared. Other than that, the two people that were in the truck were excellent. I really liked them. They were very friendly.
Colonial Van Lines was very detail-oriented. If you change your mind about boxes or you add one, make sure you tell them so they could write it on the paper. I didn't tell them everything, so when they got the list of what was in the storage unit, it wasn't completed. The guy that I was talking with when I first started out said, "Oh, don't worry about it. I didn't have to tell him every detail." But you do have to tell them every detail that's in the storage unit so they know to write down every little thing.

I was going from Ohio to Florida and I did not really have people that could help me do the move myself, so I needed to hire a company. I had called a few moving companies and Colonial Van Lines seemed to be reasonably priced and they were very communicative as far as letting me know what was going on. The coordinator let me know about how much it was gonna be and that it went by weight and how the time frame works. It could be anywhere from a week to a couple weeks. I didn't really understand that they were picking up and dropping off along the way, but she did explain that the time frame could fluctuate a little bit.
My pick up date got delayed a couple times, but I understand why that happened. It was my fault when somebody else's pick up date got delayed because when they got here, the truck couldn't pull in and there was a circle that I didn't know about. I had bought my place sight unseen. There was like a circle where the truck couldn't get through. They ended up having to go get a shuttle service. They call it a shuttle service, but they rent like a local truck and then they had to off load it reload it.
The cost was about what I was expecting. The only thing was when they told me the weight would be done right away, but it didn't get done right away. So, I didn't really know what the weight was. The person who assisted me during the move called all the time. She asked if I’ve heard from the driver, seen if they contacted me, which they did, they were telling me when they were on their way. She was always in contact with me. So, I was pleased with that. I liked Colonial Van Lines. They were very communicative, especially the salesperson and then the account manager who was helping me stay on track. I really liked that they stayed in contact with me a lot. I appreciated that. Even if it's gonna be early or late, at least they let me know.

I was part of making the arrangements for my ex-husband's move. He was moving from the house that we used to occupy in Illinois to a new house, which we are currently both occupying, in North Carolina. Colonial Van Lines picked up the stuff at the house that’s in Illinois and put it in storage. Then they took it from storage and brought it by truck to North Carolina. The only issue with the entire move was that I had told the people that I made the arrangements with that the road that the house is on will not support a semi. It's not wide enough. The turn is too sharp.
They still stuck to the semi, which meant that the semi driver got extra work. It didn't affect me in any way, but that was an issue for him. In fact, he had to go to town and get another truck, and then load the stuff from the semi onto the other truck, and then bring the other truck here and unload it. So, it made a whole extra thing for him. It didn’t damage anything. It didn't cause any problems. It happened the same day, so it wasn’t even inconvenient for me. It was just that they need to listen to the customer a little bit. The semi drivers that they had were experts. But it doesn’t matter, if the truck doesn't fit, it doesn't fit. The wheels of a semi will not fit on this road, and it's a drop-off on both sides. Other than that, when I was setting up the moving, I spoke to a great person. She was very knowledgeable, very personable and did an excellent job.

I looked at various sites that reviewed van lines and Colonial was ranked really high on those sites. It was also inexpensive. I had to collect three bids from Mayflower, United, and Colonial, and Colonial came in with the lowest bid. It went well with the movers. They were subcontracted movers and they worked really hard. The lead guy was very experienced. He's been doing it for 20 years and was very careful. Moving from Arkansas to New York is no easy potatoes. It was a long haul. The estimated time was anywhere from four days to two weeks which is not unusual for van lines. They got it there in about a week which was good for us. The minivan was packed tight to get us through at least two weeks without furniture. But they showed up a week later and there was not a single thing broken or single thing missing. That's pretty impressive.
We had grossly underestimated how much we had to move and how much we had to leave. We had many more boxes than we thought we were gonna have so that bolstered the cost. But it would've been like that. That would've happened with either van line. I'd recommend Colonial to anybody who's moving. Dealing with the pandemic, it does nothing but make those logistics a lot harder to deal with, but they did really well considering. I did have a couple who moved from Little Rock to the same area on Long Island with a different company. They had a house and while we were moving a two-bedroom apartment, what we had was the equal to a three-bedroom house. It cost them about $5,000 more.

Colonial Van Lines' reps were fabulous. But, the quote they gave would have been more useful to me if they came to my house 'cause I underestimated the number of boxes I had by a lot. Their drivers did well and I felt really bad for them 'cause it was hot. My stuff was the first batch packed and to get to them, they had to unload another person's stuff.
Reviewed Oct. 31, 2020
The quote they gave was fine and the cost of the move was less than that. The only problem was that they said they were gonna call me five days before to let me know when their moving guys were gonna come. I never heard from them so I had to call. But they finally got things straightened out. Pickup and delivery went excellently. There was nothing damaged or missing.

I got an estimate from a van line and their price was much higher than Colonial. Also, they weren't gonna be as flexible and accommodating. Colonial's rep was competent and well-informed on the subject. We ended up paying more than their quote and it would have been good if we were prepared for that. But, I think the estimate was as close as it could have been based on the information I gave them. It was still a good value. The team that packed and moved was very time efficient, polite, and courteous. If they needed information, they asked for it and they communicated well. We use futon furniture and one sofa took a ding. That was superficial though and not structural. I'll just touch it up.

I was there for pickup and they were very professional. They were taking big mirrors and made sure everything was wrapped well. It was in a condominium, so they abided by those rules. They wore their masks 100%, and they made sure they weren't tracking anything. They were very conscientious. On drop-off, my mother was supposed to go ahead COVID cases. So they had to change and they were able to do that. We had to rent a storage unit. They were adaptable. So that went really well. Everybody was great. They drove cross-country and they were there in a reasonable time. It went pretty well. Also, they were totally within all the quotes I got. The worst part was the calls almost every day, asking how it went.

Moving is awful, to begin with, but Colonial Van Lines was good. It was the ease of getting through the process that made me choose them. Other van companies that I called wanted to send somebody out. They wanted a video. But I worked with Colonial and we talked through it with their representative internally. It worked out great from my vantage point. It was a competitive price. It wasn't the cheapest necessarily, but it was easy to work with them. The move was for 396 miles. It was a small move for a half of a condominium. Benson, the coordinator that I did business with, was good and everything was okay. When it comes a time, I'll call Colonial again.

I gave him the information, and he was responsive and got back to me quickly. The move was happening on a Sunday and the representative communicated with me the day before. He let me know how I could be in contact because their offices were gonna be closed on that day. I expected movers to come promptly, and they were there. They wrapped everything and nothing was broken. Everything went fine. The guys did a great job and they were easy to work with. I’d use them again.

They worked great with everything because there were issues with the guy getting out of the residence, but they were just the bomb. The guy that came out when they were getting ready to start the move in the house was absolutely wonderful. He explained everything that was gonna happen. He oversaw everything that was done in the house and went over all the paperwork with me. He was just great. He was the delivery guy, too, and he was just spot-on. He really made the whole thing just work. They stayed after me to make sure this is done. “We're getting closer to your date. Have you done this? Have you got this done?” They just kept you online so it'll move smoothly, and it did. Some people don't like Colonial, but I did. I love them.

We relocated because we were leaving California to be in the Midwest near family and Colonial's price was the most competitive. The drivers and movers were pleasant. There was no damage. It was just communication was non-existent. I talked to somebody on the phone and they asked me to count furniture, like how many dressers, how many TVs, but then, when the movers showed up, they counted pieces, as in boxes, TVs, rugs, everything combined. That was not how it was described to me.
Then we were told that they would be at our place at a certain day. We called to inquire because they gave a four-hour window and we were 20 minutes or so from that window being closed. The driver called us back and said he was told that they weren't delivering until the next day. But then he said that he could still come that day so we agreed. He came and it was literally one man to unload our three-bedroom house worth of stuff. Also, I wasn't given a final bill until after everything was done. I ended up paying $1,000 more than I was quoted because of that. I wouldn't use them again.

Colonial did not move us. They subbed it out to Alex and he was absolutely wonderful. The guys were quick, efficient, and explained everything to us. Every time that we were gonna get an extra charge for a box or a long hallway or heavy furniture, they'd let us know immediately. The coordinator was very helpful. As a matter of fact, we were having a problem about the mold because we rented an apartment but they wouldn't give us the address. Colonial was very good working with us. They looked around and found us what they call a small size truck, although it didn't look small to me, and our furniture and belongings were on it.
The quote was pretty head-on. As a matter of fact, the driver of the truck looked at it, then gave us what he thought it might be, and they were both dead right on. He went step-by-step saying it would be $800 in packing, even before the bill came. His crew, and that driver were unbelievable. They didn't stop. They just worked. A lot of times, the movers would go to the truck and stay in there for five minutes but they did not. They just hustled. There wasn't a thing damaged and nothing was lost. My family moved from California to Massachusetts to Houston, Texas. We're familiar with movers and they were an excellent crew. We were really impressed and we would use them again.

I needed to move really quickly. I got a job offer that had a rapid turnaround time. I spoke to one guy who did the initial estimation and he was really good about mentally walking through the rooms, estimating weights and furniture, and reminding me about what I did or didn't have like overestimating as well so that we were in a good ballpark. Then, it made it pretty easy. It all got onto the truck and it was a little less than what was estimated. So, he was pretty spot-on. The account manager was super nice. The only thing that I thought was weird was it seemed like there were a lot of people attached to the job. I would talk to this one person and he would say that he'd get me to somebody else. Then after I'd already moved, it was like this person's gonna handle my move, and I already did. It was kind of surprising, but it wasn't a big deal.
I tried to pack a lot of my stuff initially because of COVID and everybody was wearing masks and stuff. It was just a comfort thing. The two guys that showed up had lots of good suggestions on helping me out if I had something fragile 'cause I haven't used a moving service before. Everything was pretty much done with the weight estimation, the pricing estimation, and the dates that I would get my stuff picked up and then delivered. That was all wrapped up really quickly, which I appreciated 'cause I was on a much more accelerated timeline than I'm used to.

Colonial was ranked high on a website search that my wife had done. Everything went well, except something happened with the original driver, so the morning of the move, they had to pull in another driver. He showed up eight hours later than he was supposed to and that was a little stressful. Once he got there though, the team loaded my stuff up quickly and got it all done. They got my stuff here and it was fine. I'd recommend Colonial, but it's unfortunate that the estimating process is complete garbage.
We ended up doing the fixed bid based on the revised estimate. The original estimate of five grand was nowhere near what the final price was, which was 18. When someone quotes five grand, while another one quotes three grand, your natural inclination is to wanna go with the three grand one, when in fact, it's three times as high as that. The weight they estimated when we first called is so far below what it ended up being, but I'm not all upset about it because it seems like everyone does it. I noticed when our friends were getting estimates from Colonial and others that it tended to be the same thing.

I felt that the person that I was dealing with at Colonial was very professional and shared all the necessary information I needed to know. They made it clear upfront about what they do and what they don't do throughout the process. They also advise with the timing, although the timing was a bit of a challenge because living in a community, you need to schedule well in advance with Colonial. There are other people that wanna move in and move out as well, that also needs to use the same facility. But Colonial was really good at just sticking to their policy that that's their timing and that's how it works. They always let me know a day in advance and there was nothing unforeseen. They didn't over promise and under deliver. Their price was also quite competitive.

I was a little concerned about dealing with movers and getting hit with a high price after they make the move. But Colonial did a pretty good job because I provided them with enough information that they gave a pretty accurate estimate of the cost. They seem pretty reasonable to deal with in their estimates and the estimate was pretty close to what they actually cost. I thought they were fair and honest from what my estimate was. So I was pleased with that. It was also easy for them to make the move. Everything was pretty well-organized and all they had to do is move the stuff. I was well-prepared and gave the mover a good idea of what I had to move. They didn't have to do any additional stuff. I think it's important for someone that's considering it to make sure they have everything listed in what they're moving to get a fair estimate.
The only thing was that the mover gave me a window and they had scheduled for one day, and then that morning, they canceled and made it the next day which was within the window that they offered. The late response to when they were gonna change the date to the next day created a little bit of inconvenience for me. That was because of a mechanical issue with the truck they had the night before. But after that, the move itself went very well and nothing was broken and they did a fine job. I would recommend Colonial to at least be considered.

DO NOT HIRE COLONIAL VAN LINES FOR YOUR MOVE! Hiring them made our long distance move awful. They made a lot of big promises and didn’t come through on any of them. We chose them because they made me feel like they would handle my move professional and had the option of storing our things in a climate-controlled facility. I was promised that Colonial movers and a colonial van would be handling my things. That did not happen. They ended up subcontracting our move out to a local company that was not equipped to handle a long-distance move. If I had wanted a small mom and pop operation that is who I would have hired and I am sure it would have been cheaper. Instead I decided to pay more money to get a company with a good reputation who knows how to handle a long-distance move.
As soon as Colonial hired this small company, they stopped caring about me as a customer. They pretty much told me that they are not responsible for how horrible this small company was. All they had to do was provide us with movers. DO NOT HIRE COLONIAL VAN LINES. They seem to have no vetting process to who they sub contract. And when those subcontractors don’t perform and match what they contracted to do they don’t care. Colonial is in breach of our contract in more ways than one and they won’t do anything to compensate me for my awful experience. My things all came out of storage covered in mold because it certainly was not climate controlled and Colonial couldn’t even be bothered to tell me they were sorry. Just said it was my problem. How is it my problem when I was told the storage would be climate controlled?
PLEASE DO NOT HIRE COLONIAL. My things were broken, moldy and not even brought back into my home because the company didn’t have the time or the people to do it. So, after all of that my husband and I ended up moving more than half of our things ourselves. Never mind them putting anything back together that they took apart. On top of it all Colonial can’t even be bothered to apologize or acknowledge that this company did not do what was promised. So now they have made a lot of money off us and I am stuck cleaning up the mess their subcontractor made. It makes me sick to my stomach. I don’t want any other family to have to deal with this and listening to their kids cry because they lost so many of their things.

Please learn from our mistakes and avoid Colonial Van Lines at all costs. I wish we had read the many bad reviews before we signed up with them because we could have saved ourselves a lot of time, money, and trouble. This company grossly overpromises and under delivers. Like most of the people leaving reviews, our CVL estimate was significantly lower than those of other companies. It has become exceedingly clear that CVL purposely gives low estimates only to upcharge you when it is too late to change moving companies. (Also, fun fact, CVL is a broker, not a moving company, so they are not even the ones moving your things, and in turn, have very little clue about when and how your move will happen.)
We moved from California to Colorado. When we got the estimate, we were told a shuttle might be required at an extra cost to pick up our belongings, but the pick up driver would tell us. In each call leading up to the pick up day, I asked about the additional charge and was told only the driver would know. On pick up day, 8/5, I specifically ask the driver if he was using a shuttle, he said no. In fact, he wasn't even picking up our things in a branded truck, it was an enterprise rental...
We get to CO and CVL calls. They cannot tell us when our stuff will arrive, but they are ready to go over the invoice of what we will pay before they will deliver our possessions. They say the weight was significantly more than the estimate and that the delivery will be over $1000 more. Also, they will charge us for the shuttle because they insisted it was necessary. I tell them about all their previous assertions that only the driver knows and that the driver said it wasn't a shuttle. CVL had no actual record of what truck came and asked us to send a photo. After we sent a photo, they again insisted it was a shuttle, despite what the driver said, and that we would have to pay that and the extra weight cost before they would release our things.
Our delivery window of 8/8 to 8/16 comes and goes. CVL called every few days during that window to say our belongings were sitting somewhere in Nevada, there was no driver, they have no idea when there will be a driver, and there's nothing that can be done about it. At no point did they offer anything to make up for the fact that we were stuck indefinitely without any of our belongings.
We finally got our things delivered on 8/27, ELEVEN DAYS after our delivery window ended. CVL offered a pathetic $300 for significant delay, which was ironically less than what we were forced to pay for the shuttle that was never actually needed for our pick up. CVL insists that you have to pay everything before they will offload the truck. Apparently, the customers are the only ones expected to uphold their end of the agreement. As the truck is getting offloaded, we can see crushed boxes, dented furniture, and a stand up lamp that was completely destroyed, which makes sense because the movers hadn't even attempted to wrap/protect it. Really glad we paid for all the "extra weight" of our now broken belongings.
Our delivery confirmation says "paid in full" and "$0" remaining balance. I received an email a few days ago insisting we owe another $800, the delivery confirmation is wrong, and if we do not pay immediately, they will also start charging us late fees. Apparently to CVL and their movers, the written estimate, shuttle fee, delivery window, and delivery confirmation with their own driver's handwriting and signature stating "paid in full" and "$0" are completely meaningless and don't have to be even remotely followed. Yet, the terms that say they will hold your things hostage until you pay in full for their embarrassingly bad service, that they will pay you pennies on the dollar for everything they break and damage, and that they will give you $30/day for being as late as they want, are non-negotiable.
Do yourself a favor, pay more at the outset for a reputable company that will stand by its agreement, treat your belongings with care, and accurately represent its service and fees. I promise it will save you time, money, and a lot of aggravation in the end. Like the others, I will report CVL to U.S.D.O.T. in the hope that others will be spared the awful experience we had, and continuing to have, with CVL.

I’d like to warn everyone against using Colonial Van Lines. Colonial advertise on this site and this is how I found them. By far the worst moving experience I’ve ever had in my life. From farming out our job to a fly by night company, BCM Relocation, who used rented trucks and used no Covid protection and treated our furniture and belongings like garbage. Our furniture was supposed to be delivered in five days and it took nearly three weeks to get our possessions delivered, and then only under duress.
There was an atrocious account manager who never once apologized and was impossible to get hold of, we were charged for services that were never performed and, finally, screamed at by the delivery person who told me they were taking our possessions off the truck because they wouldn’t honor a binding estimate. Despite asking repeatedly for the documentation of the weight of the empty and full trucks, they would not provide it. Their claims department offered $60 compensation for many broken and ruined items, saying the rest was a customer service issue, the list goes on.
They left the family of a first responder with a three month old baby without furniture for three weeks. Every attempt to deal reasonably with either Colonial or BCM has not been successful. This is not posted to be vindictive, just so that other families don't go through the hell we did. Update: the claim was adjusted by them to $210 to include packing work we paid for that they never did, however they still will not take responsibility for over $1000 in damaged and missing items.

I started researching long ago. There were a couple of companies where the price at first glance was really good but once I started doing a little more research on them, they were definitely like bare-bones kind of service. I ended up going with Colonial because of the fair price and I trusted that they would do the job well. The quotes were right on par with what I wanted to pay. It was kind of a complicated move, given COVID and everything, but everyone I interacted with was great and understanding. Colonial did a great job.

If I had the option, there'd be NO STARS....Sales was fine, but when it came to the pickup date, my salesman was nowhere to be found. For my family, friends, and my mortgage clients, I advise them to look elsewhere for professional movers. The customer service was terrible at communicating the "why" my movers didn't show up on time. Not just a few hours - but DAYS late with major inconvenience to me and my family. The company did NOTHING to find a replacement mover. The fact that they have to have a "Resolutions Department" tells you they have issues on a regular basis. But even after the move and the company was PAID IN FULL, that department had no real ability to provide any form of compensation for my aggravations and additional expenses. I've tried to post my opinion and grievances on their Facebook page, but they don't post REAL customer reviews....just their own ads.

Professional. Move was from Rochester, MI to Chicago, IL. Was kept afloat on the logistics. Smooth move overall, movers took care of moving and wrapping everything. Received packing slip for the move and was able to have everything shipped out and moved to new apartment in a couple of days. Would recommend to my friends.

I relocate a lot. For the past five years, I've moved four or five times and I've used different vendors. A lot of companies were quoting a very high price from moving from Texas to California. When we talked to Colonial Van Lines, they gave me a good quote. That was the first reason I chose them. They gave me clarity on all the points which I have to take care of and everything about movement, payments, what the truckers will do and what they will not do. Because of COVID-19 situation, I had to reschedule my movements a couple of times and they helped me on that. During the week of move, I again got some calls from their marketing department where due to some truck being not available, it had to be postponed by one week or so. During the move, I was getting calls from another lady along the whole transfer process. The experience was all very good, clean, very fast, and under my price which is what I desired.

I went away to school, and I was going back home. It was a one-day move and Colonial Van Lines was given to me through a third party but the people that moved me weren't Colonial. Colonial said they weren't a broker, but they gave me a different mover. Apart from that, the services and expectations that were set were 100% accurate. They're very honest and upfront. They don't sugarcoat anything, and your move will be handled with care.
I was more prepared during the time of pickup and delivery than I was my first time around and that's thanks to the representative I dealt with. He was nice and very knowledgeable about moves in general. He gave me some tips on packing stuff and what to look out for. He was very on top of it and he answered all my questions. He was very reassuring too. I had a bad experience moving from my home to where my school was, so I harassed him a bit about certain things, and he was totally cool with it. I really liked talking to him. He was very easy to talk to.

I was retiring and moving back to where I was originally from, which was out of state. I did some research on the internet and I was looking for reviews. Colonial Van Lines had a lot of positive reviews, so I chose them. My experience was simple and there wasn't any hidden things that I wasn't expecting. They switched me to several different people though. For some reason they handed me off, but every time they did, the person was cooperative, helpful and did everything they could.
It was odd to get handed off and had to go over things again, but everything worked out fine. The estimate was dead on and the representative was excellent. The driver that I had was awesome as well. He was helpful and he was right on top of things. He supervised the load and unload with expertise. Colonial's a good business. They are very transparent and professional.

They are dishonest, they lie. They hook you in and then overcharge you and they broke almost all of my belongings. I was told by Steve and Veronica I could call them anytime with any problems. Well they NEVER returned my calls. The only good person in that company is Alexia who tried her best to resolve issues. Steve assured me they would pick my stuff up on the date requested. That was supposed to be Thursday or Friday. Well I got a call saying it wouldn’t be until the next Tuesday! I said that won’t work because I was leaving Sunday for my move cross country. So then they got a contract company to pick my stuff up on Saturday.
They almost destroyed everything. My original price was $6083 for 50 boxes. Then it went to $8000 for 150 boxes. I had 126 boxes. The final cost was $11,800!! According to them I had 11 items extra. The movers took items I didn’t even want to take! I kept telling them not to take them but they did anyway. It was an awful experience and if I can save someone else being mistreated by them then it’s worth leaving this review. I am also filing a complaint with the BBB.

Everything went smoothly with the process and I had a positive experience. I ended up going with them because the quote that I got from them was reasonable and the person I spoke with was helpful in answering all my questions. The movers were great. I really liked them.

I was in a pinch and I needed someone to be able to move quickly. It was a cross-country move. I was getting out of the military and I didn't necessarily have the orders for the military to pay for the move. I already had the job lined up so I had to pay out of pocket myself to get us moved. I was just looking for a van line and saw Colonial Van Lines online. With COVID and everything going on, they didn't have to actually send someone out to come and do a quote. But they got back to us quickly and they were able to do a quote.
Everyone from Colonial Van Lines was very helpful from the very first person. The guy who gave us a quote was really good. The person they passed us off to after that and handled the stuff from there on was good. Everybody got back to us within a reliable amount of time. The actual movers that they had come out were phenomenal and they got stuff done in a quick and efficient manner. Everything made it. Overall, Colonial Van Lines was friendly and efficient.

Colonial Van Lines' quote was cheaper than alternative companies. I went with them for an interstate move. Their reps were very polite and professional. They made sure I was aware of every detail about the move. My account manager kept me up to date and made follow up calls before, during, and after the move. I had some issues at the end of the move though as there were a lot of pluses with their charges. I didn't expect that I would incur those charges 'cause I had a different understanding of packing expenses and additional steps.

I did an online directory search for local movers in the area. I picked one local moving company and they never got back to me. After that I put out the word that I needed movers to quote and within seconds I got inundated with calls. I took about three written quotes from people and then settled on Colonial. They were great. They were very handholding during the whole thing. Back office was great. The timing, right down to arrival time and predicted wait, was very close to accurate given what I was telling them over the phone. It was all pretty good.
The guys that helped me that day were great. But after a long day, I realized they weren't really part of Colonial per se. They were just kind of moving me. They were leased out. But nothing got broken. They did really well considering it was during a pandemic and a heatwave. Everybody was wearing face masks and you had to keep your distance. I doubled my tip because they were working in such horrible conditions.
Overall, Colonial was a little better than average. I've done a couple of big moves and they weren't the best. But as far as price they were really good price. They weren't cheap, but they weren't expensive either. But they didn't deliver my extension ladder. Extension ladders are a couple hundred bucks. I didn't realize it until almost a month later after the move. I mentioned it to them and they asked if I wanna make a claim. I told them I can't be bothered with that and that it was okay.

The first time that the coordinator was supposed to call, she didn't. The next time I talked to her, the news was better than I thought in terms of when stuff was gonna arrive, which was very pleasing. They told me that the arrival time could be upwards to two weeks and it only took five days, which was great. But I was not satisfied with the initial pickup.
The actual day that the stuff was picked up from my storage unit was a bit iffy. The driver said he'd be there in half an hour and it was two hours since I had to have somebody else be there because I had to be in my other state at the house closing. If he had told me it was going to be two hours, then I wouldn't have sent the guy over as early as I had. My friend had to sit for an hour and a half with nobody arriving. If you're gonna be late, then say you're gonna be late, as opposed to “We’re gonna be there on time,” and not be. With the arrival of the actual truck at the house, they called and said they'd be there in 45 minutes and they were here in that amount of time. So the back end of that was fine.
I lost some items but I didn't feel I could put in a claim form because I wasn't there to be sure that they got loaded up. So that was a bit disappointing. There was a box of kitchen stuff that can be replaced, but there were a couple art pieces that can't be replaced. The move cost a whole lot more than I thought, because of the amount of packaging that they felt they needed to do. When I packed everything away into my storage unit, I wasn't assuming it was gonna go directly onto a truck. So I knew there were things that they were going to feel the need to put into additional boxes and what they put into extra packages meant that all arrived corralled. I would start with Colonial again if I were to move again because I know that they respond. That was a big thing because I had a list and I kept calling phone numbers and I got machines and I got people who didn't return messages. Colonial picked up the damn phone. It's almost that simple.

I talked with Colonial before in the fall of last year when I had planned to move a few pieces of furniture. I moved in two stages and they were one of three companies that had contacted me after I put out a request on the internet. I did not use them for the smaller move of items in the fall. But I used them when I moved two months ago. The mileage was around 1,300 miles and the weight was close to 4,000 pounds. I ended up moving more weight than what was estimated because I wasn't in my residence when I was talking to them on the phone. So it ended up being a little bit more expensive than originally quoted, but they were upfront that this was charged by weight and by mile.
I spoke with the coordinator over the phone for the quote and I written down a list and read out all of these items. But I didn't take into account that I had larger storage areas, closets, and all the stuff that I had stored that ended up being shipped. The moving crew was really good. They were very professional. It was just a two-man crew, but they did a really good job. They were very efficient and communicated what was going on. I would always ask everybody what time it would take to get these things done, and they were upfront with estimating the time that it would take to pack up, load up or unload. I was pleased with everything because I have dealt with other moving companies.

She called several times following up with me but I didn't talk to her many, many times. But overall, Colonial was really, really good. The price with Colonial Van Lines was quite a bit more expensive. I was a little disappointed with it but I understood the reasoning. I told them that we had a sleigh bed and the weight of the sleigh bed wasn't gonna be the same as the normal beds. But they don't weigh this stuff before they take it. They take the truck and weigh it after they fill it. So I didn't know how many hundred pounds or so I was over on weight with what I told them. They can possibly come out to look at it and give the estimate that way but they don't come out. Basically, you do it over the telephone. Otherwise, we were happy with Colonial. They explained everything very well and the guys were hard workers. We were satisfied with every aspect of the move, including the pickup and the delivery.

It was great dealing with the moving coordinator. It was pretty efficient which was one of the things I was worrying about ‘cause that could take a long time. The services and expectations they set were pretty accurate. There was some confusion at the beginning. We had been told that the movers would be there the next morning and they did show up, but they didn't have room on their truck. So they had to leave and come back a day and a half after. That was annoying. But once that was sorted out, it was good. Also, the crew was great.

I was moving from Maryland to Arizona. I have a better feeling for Colonial Van Lines over some of the other companies and also the price. Everything was great but because of COVID and trucks and things like that, our pickup got delayed for three days. It was a last-minute delay, so it screwed up a lot of plans. But the coordinator was prepping me for it to be over a week and it ended up only three days. I moved twice with the government and once on my own with a moving company, and this was the first time the same guy who picked up my load, dropped off my load. Because of that, I still haven't found anything that has gotten really broken or lost en route. The other two times, they went into storage and stuff got lost or broken because was moved three times instead of one time. So overall, it was a very pleasant moving experience with Colonial.

I called three other companies as well and Colonial was the one that responded the quickest and followed up the best. We worked on a fairly tight timeline for the move but we were well prepared enough in advance that it wasn't really an issue. We locked down a date within the week that we wanted to move and everything was on time. The movers were very professional. They did a great job both packing and unpacking. So I was very pleased with both sets of movers.
The only thing that I was not aware of until I actually signed the paperwork was that the movers themselves did not have any Colonial Van Lines logo or anything along those sorts. Many things went wrong, but the most outrageous is that I moved a measly 350 miles and have to wait 7 days to get my belongings because they are combining jobs (greed). All of my belongings are sitting in a warehouse baking in the middle of summer because they want to cut corners. It is unacceptable that I have to wait 7 days for a 350 mile move. And the customer service lady told me "you aren't our only customer...moving is stressful for everyone sweetie." I didn't even get a "I'm sorry for the inconvenience", but instead tried making me feel bad and being passive aggressive. Horrible customer service. I will never recommend them. Moving is already difficult, don't hire a moving company like Colonial that won't at least try to provide alternatives or at the very least apologize for the stress they are causing.

I got a couple of quotes and the staff at Colonial was very prompt getting back to me. The lady who coordinated the move was wonderful and accessible. Even right off the bat before I signed, I have a lot of good customer service. The moving day went very well. The guys were later than expected but as it turned out, since I was doing most of the packing myself, I needed that time to do the packing.
From the time the guy showed up to load the truck until they unloaded the truck, it was about four days. The condition of my items was very good. I have found a couple of things that if I'm going to be nitpicky, I could complain about. There were wooden side bed rails and I did mention it to the guy putting these on the truck. He just bundled them together and put a lot of tape around them but nothing to keep them from getting scratched. They are scratched but not badly and I am not upset about it or I would have called Colonial. I'm just sorry that I didn't stick to my ground more with the person doing the moving and the loading and said I really wanted them wrapped.
For the other item, I didn't notice how it was packaged until it came off the truck. It's an older dresser that has kind of an upside down U-frame that holds the mirror on top. This wooden frame sits on top of the dresser and gets bolted. The mirror kind of swings inside this upside down U. You can tilt it a little. When the movers saw it, it was a U-shaped piece of wood. It didn't get packed in anything. It is like an inch and a half thick and 25 inches wide and 20 inches tall. A mirror box would have been great but it just went on the truck. It has two teeny tiny miniscule marks on it. But overall, I'm very happy with the move and I would not hesitate to recommend Colonial to friends.

Colonial Van Lines claims over and over again that they are not a broker. However, they did not service my move in any way. Booking with them two months in advance provided no benefit since they did not reserve or schedule a truck for my move date and only told me a few days before that they could not make my estimated pickup date.
-Told me 4-hour pickup window and did not show up, I had to call an hour later and they said they'd get back to me
-A 3rd party moving company showed up and asked for extra money to provide his team since it was raining, but told me he'd "take care of my stuff" and be the guys who would deliver (they weren't)
-They would not give me delivery date; even though they said they would at pickup, but he'd call me the next day
-The next day they said they wouldn't know the delivery date and claimed they would 'only have a better idea of a delivery day during the pickup', which made no sense since they didn't have a better idea even the day after
-6 Days after pickup and 5 calls putting off from various Colonial Van Lines employees did they finally give a delivery day
At Delivery-First things off the truck weren't mine
-Boxes ripped and broken
-Wood dented and scuffed on furniture
-Despite several emails from Colonial Van Lines about their trained staff and COVID precautions, they were all lies because the movers were hired off CRAIGSLIST and were not employed by either Colonial Van Lines or the 3rd party
I am still missing items, Colonial Van Lines takes no responsibility for their third parties despite telling me prior that they own all their trucks and all employees are theirs, and claims they don't know what other people I spoke to said which is the laziest response possible for having 11 different people call me over the moving process. All in all, Colonial Van Lines only took my money and provided nothing. A 3rd party provided a truck and hired people on Craigslist to move the possessions of mine that actually showed up.

The only thing that was not clearly stated and understood by everyone upfront was the additional charge for the feet from the van to my front door. We were kinda taken off guard about the additional fees on the front end and on the back end. I was told that by the actual mover that came to move me. He said that essentially, anybody who doesn't live in a single family home will have to pay that extra fee.
But the actual move was perfect. The person that I worked with worked alone when he came to pick up my stuff. He had a helper that came to help with the mattress towards the end. When he came to drop my stuff off in New Orleans, he worked by himself and he was excellent. I really appreciated him. He worked pretty fast and my stuff was delivered. Updated on 08/31/2020: Well, once again I only put one star because in order to continue this review I had to. They are a -0 ⭐️ company. So the first reviews were about how I contracted with the company, paid a deposit and they never showed up, leaving me at the very 11th hour to move myself. Two days after the review “Donna” from the Resolutions Department contacted me. She was very charming and apologetic on the phone telling me that she didn’t get back immediately because of her colonoscopy, then going into all the reasons why their company is so screwed up based, of course, on the COVID-19 situation.
The conversation went on and on about how that affected them and actually she was trying to make me feel guilty. I did ask her why if this started during the Covid season did they not begin notifying people that they were going to be a no-show. By the way, there were 6 other reviews with the same situation that I face during the month of July when the company blew up.
Somewhere in the middle or toward the end of this ongoing diatribe about how all the moving companies were having problems I asked her so where is this going? She asked me if she put in a “special request” for $350 because of, I guess, “my pain and suffering” would that be agreeable to resolve my issue. And she would get back to me. That was August 22. End of conversation. No further communication to date. Once again proving that they are a no-show, no communication company. Nice words ONLY. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY -0⭐️.
Updated on 08/21/2020: Remember the 1 star is only to be able to write this review. Still -0 ⭐️. No service, no show, no contact company. This is a follow up to my August 20 review. I have been contacted by “Donna” in the Resolution Department twice with a phone number that goes to voicemail, twice. She asked for a “brief” conversation about my experience which we have been unable to have because no one answers the phone! Guess I’ll try Mitzi, the receptionist, as she was the ONLY person available.
Original Review: I only put 1 star as it’s the only way to continue this review. I give them -0 stars! I contracted With Colonial Van Lines in early June for a move from Georgia to Moody, Texas, at distance of 1000 miles. Paid $1900 deposit. I was scheduled for pick up on July 27 and 28th to be delivered in Texas by around August 1. On Monday, July 27 never showed. I called them “25” times and no one would speak to me and tell me what the problem was. The one time I was able to get thru to Artisha **, my contact person, she became quite irritated with me because I wanted to know why no one showed up. She kept telling me that as soon as the dispatcher got in touch with her she would get in touch with me knowing all along what the problem was.
Finally at 4 o’clock in the afternoon of the 27th I found out they had no driver, did not intend on having a driver and left me totally without a mover. I had to be out by Wednesday the 29th. I was In total disbelief and stunned that this fiasco just happened, as I based my choice on “your” Consumer Affairs recommendations. The only person that tried to help me get information was Mitzi, the receptionist. All the phone calls and voicemails I left were NEVER returned. Finally I was able to talk to someone at 4 o’clock on Monday and that’s when I found out they had left me stranded. I consider this a con job. I did get my deposit back the next day, no explanation? How dare they put me in the position they put me in! I cannot tell you the depths of my anger for them leaving me in the lurch! I DO NOT Recommend colonial van lines. A no show no service company.

Going through Colonial Van Lines' process was awesome. The reps were meticulous and gave me information every step of the way. They called me, checked up on me and emailed me every update. Colonial provided me a straightforward timeframe. A week or two before we went, I called them and added a number of boxes. I needed to add more than they were taking but it wasn't a problem. I even got pictures of the boxes and how they put them in my storage unit for me 'cause it was 1,200 miles away. They put my things in my storage unit, took pictures and sent it to me. Using their service was a wonderful and flawless experience.

Initially, I was a little worried about who was gonna show up since Colonial Van Lines was more of a brokerage than an actual moving company. I also didn't like the deposit. But we lucked out with the company in Houston that they ended up brokering. The drivers that showed up were great. If I had to move again, I'd just pick them in a heartbeat.
It took about a week to get my things delivered. But I still couldn't figure out the shuttle charge. There was gonna be a shuttle if they couldn't fit an 18-wheeler into the pick up or drop off location. I'm almost 100% sure that they've used the exact same truck to pick up and the same crew that drove it all the way up. So there was no shuttle involved but there was a charge for it. But after reading some of the reviews, I just threw in the towel and was just happy that it was the only charge.

Originally, I wasn't going to move with Colonial Van Lines. But the other company that I was trying to get to move with had no availability during the timeframe that I was looking to move. So I looked online and the first search that I had was Colonial Van Lines. They gave me a very basic quote then I called them. They already had my file ready and it took me 30 minutes. They were very professional about it. They gave me an estimated timeframe for pickup and for delivery, and explained to me how the process was going to go from beginning to end. My main concern was the delivery timeframe. But that ended up being less than a day. They gave me a pretty wide window, so I was a little worried in that regard, but that was about it.
I moved from a little north of Philadelphia to the Rockville area in Maryland. So that's around two and a half to three hours total drive. Colonial Van Lines got to my place in Pennsylvania around 11:00 AM and they were all done packing by around 2:00-ish. Then delivery was two days later in Maryland, and it took an hour and a half to unload and unpack everything.

I liked Colonial Van Lines' price. The lady that I dealt with was excellent. I moved from Georgia to Kentucky. I came home. I gave the information to her and she triple-checked, which was great. She continued to check with me and make sure that everything was good to go, and it was great. I appreciated the personal interaction.
The services and expectations set by the coordinator were perfect. I got better than what I expected. As far as the move, nothing was broken, nothing was lost, and nothing was damaged. The truck driver guy brought his daddy to help him load my stuff in Georgia. His daddy was hilarious. We had a great time while they were moving me out. Then when he got here with my stuff, there was another gentleman that had come up from Louisville, and they were wonderful. So overall, I was very pleased. It was the best move I had. This has been about my sixth move now. I put on my Facebook when I first got home that if anybody needed to move, they should call that phone number that I had.

Everything with Colonial Van Lines went, overall, good. I still haven't put in for some damage we had. My motorcycle got damaged. They strapped it too close to the wall and they scraped it up pretty good on the fairing. They know about it. I just haven't placed the actual claim. Also, the moves were sending the emails to the wrong person at first. It was to my company, so we almost missed our day. But once we got that squared off, it was very good communication. The coordinator was good, too.

Everybody from Colonial Van Lines was great, from the customer service who called and let me know when they were coming and the drivers that came and picked up and delivered my furniture. They did exactly what they said they were gonna do. The people were good and the price was right. But somewhere along the line, they broke down several parts of my furniture and it was unrecoverable. A desk, a TV stand and a table were broken down. I couldn't figure out how to put the desk back together nor did they send the parts. I was missing the frame to put the legs on the table, so they left that off. They also broke a kitchen table. Then they also took the little fiberboard and the TV stand with fiberboard. But the customer service and the price made up for it.
Colonial Van Lines offered that we should file a claim for it, but I worked in trucking for 30 years and I knew the check I was gonna get. We signed the released value of 60 cents a pound, so I didn't waste my time with the TV stand and a little fiberboard desk. There were also a couple of times where Colonial saved me the amount that I was going to get from the claim. They sent a box truck to my apartment and I didn't have to pay an extra fee for them to park somewhere and move it over there. That would've been a couple of hundred dollars. Then they didn't think they were gonna be able to get in the neighborhood, so they had to do the same thing at the other end. But the driver came over and looked at it and came in and brought it to the house. So, I probably saved more than I would’ve lost on the claim. That was why I gave them a break on that too. They did exactly what they said they were gonna do.

The price from Colonial Van Lines wasn't high enough to drive me away or low enough to make me suspicious. We talked with the coordinator several times. I had to update him on new items that hadn't been on my original information that I gave to him. Then he made the decision to go ahead and have the quote formally updated with that. They also checked in before the move to make sure everything was set and that we had everything we needed. The services and expectations that were set by the coordinator was completely accurate. When they did the weigh-in, it just came in slightly below what they had estimated.
The move was easier than I thought it was gonna be. The driver called me a few days before and kept in touch with me. They arrived when they said they would and did what they said they would. We moved cross-country and we needed time to get out to our new home and stay behind a couple of days. We set it up before we left and the driver accommodated that for us. He was a local mover so it was good for him. He was able to drive the truck to his shop not too far away from us and then he just waited another couple days till we got here. Then we knew when he was coming and he brought us our stuff. It took several days but it was nicely coordinated.

Everything was fine with Colonial. I was very pleased with the boys that did the work. They were on time and they did everything fine. They packed fine. I liked Colonial's cost. The quote that was given to me wasn't really accurate, but then I added things to it. They told me the balance will be $1,000 and they needed a bank check. My daughter had a bank check for $1,000, but it turned out to be 1,500. I wasn't in town, so I had to hurry and try to get the balance with the Visa. They wouldn't accept the Visa. I had trouble making the last payment. If they had told me in the beginning, I would have had that check out for $1,500, but it wasn't. I finally did get it on Visa bill.

I went online, typed in moving companies, and Colonial Van Lines was the first one that popped up. I did a quote and everything was very easy through the website. They started calling me and I didn't check or go through anybody else. The young lady that called me did a great job selling it and making me feel comfortable. I'm in Ohio and I had to get my little girl home. I didn't have a lot of time to get this thing done and the whole thing just went smoothly. My daughter's lease was up on the 31st and I needed to get her out of there on the 31st. We had to coordinate getting a truck there on the 31st to get that going and we had to work on how to put two people in the same place at same time.
The communication with Colonial Van Lines was outstanding. It's a lot of work, especially these days, working from home and trying to communicate with other people on how you're going to communicate these things with one email. Emails are difficult, too. So, communication is very hard when we're all sitting in different places, but Colonial Van Lines got it together. They know what they're doing.
Some people may get a little irritated with all the communication, but I've been in transportation for 35 years and I've seen some of the best companies go down at two because they forgot how to communicate with the customers. So, I'm not gonna say anything about too much communication because never once did I think my daughter's stuff was anywhere other than where it was supposed to be and what they were doing while they were on their way. If there are any fathers out there who are worried about getting their daughters moved to a new job or off to college, Colonial would be a great choice.

With Colonial Van Lines, you get a lot more for what you pay for. The moving coordinator was very helpful and very patient because it was a long process. The services and expectations he set were very accurate. We had issues with our actual packers though. But our truck driver was amazing, and along with customer service, we were able to get a new moving crew out because the other ones walked off the job. They wanted to be paid up front. The truck driver was just waiting for her car to be loaded so that she could pay them. They were outside cursing in front of small children. It was really bad, but our driver handled it very well. We had light issues that we saw on some furniture pieces, but it's kind of to be expected. This isn't our first move.

Colonial Van Lines was very good. The only comment that I have is that I've gotten so many calls asking me how it did. The move went very well, and everything was great. But the thing is they bounce me around to a lot of different people, and that was confusing. We did the move in such a short period of time. We called them one Friday, and we moved the next Friday. They had so many people calling us. It was a little confusing, but I realized that most people call them and then they're moving a couple of months later. The moving crew was very good, very thorough, very polite, and they kept us informed of everything they were doing, and they were quick, so that was good.

I was glad I had packed as much stuff myself as I had. Packing done by the movers was very poor. Many items were more or less dumped into wardrobe boxes without much, if any, paper or packing material. After pointing out the record/vinyl turntable specifically and being assured they knew how to pack it, when we unpacked, it was dumped in a wardrobe box, turned on its side, and it had become disassembled. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to unpack everything. There are a few more items that I hope were handled professionally and I hope they are not broken. You get what you pay for of course. I thought the price was reasonable. I had not planned on such poor packing.

Colonial was cheaper than the other options available and they had earlier dates. I did an estimate online and I got an email response right away. They were very prompt. Within two email exchanges, I got a phone call and they answered all my questions. They were able to tell me how much the deposit was and they were willing to hold the estimated amount for 24 hours so that I could gather the money. They were really understanding.
This was amidst the COVID situation and they were even understanding in that. Other moving companies kept pushing me back because the pickup was in New York City and it was during the highest point of COVID. Colonial didn’t think twice about it, which was amazing under the circumstances. It’s bad enough I'm dealing with a family death, but to then deal with concern for my mother and having to deal with this move, so when I say they were awesome, they were awesome.
They came in for the pickup and all my mom had to do was point and they packed up everything. They had a one-bedroom apartment packed in maybe five hours and was loading it onto the truck. Once they got to Tennessee, which is where I am, to drop it off, they were the nicest. They kept me posted in case they were gonna be late because they started to run into traffic as they got closer to Nashville. But they got here on the time they said they were gonna get here and they unloaded pretty quickly.
They asked if they could play music, which I had no problem with. They used a covering on their feet to come in and out of my house and they wiped down stuff when they were taking it off the truck. They really did what they were supposed to do and they were friendly about it too. I really appreciated that. Also, there was a piece of furniture I thought I wanted in one place and then decided I wanted it in another. They were nice enough to move it for the second time. They put everything together. I'm sure I'll be using them again in December because my son is moving into his own apartment in January in Florida. They definitely got a customer. For as long as I need to move, I'll call them first.

I did an online find the mover quiz things where several auction people would contact you. Colonial and one other company were the only two that responded and Colonial continued with follow up. They were helpful in setting up my move and in explaining what would happen next. The case manager I had explained things in detail. They were in contact pretty much right up into the day of the move.
The subcontract movers, Glass City Movers, came and packed for me and loaded it out in a day. I have an 1800 square foot house and it had to get into a van in a short period of time. I never saw people worked so hard and they took great care in packing glass and small items that I had. On the delivery date, it was a whole other crew but they were quite efficient, friendly, and easy to work with. It does not appear that any of the unboxed furniture was damaged, but they didn't open every box as they were unloading it because it was just going into a storage unit. They were really good.
After the move, Colonial seemed to not know that I had moved nor that I got delivered because they said they would call on the day of the move to make sure things were going but no one called. I called them to give compliments on Glass City Movers and I didn't get the person that helped me. Then, a week after delivery, they called again to make sure that my stuff had been delivered. But I appreciate the follow up and the guy said that somebody else had the case and they were gone. And I get it. The fact that I got lost in their system isn't necessarily a reflection of them, other than the timing and a pandemic. Everybody at Colonial Van Lines has been very pleasant to work with and that made it a very good experience.

We started discussing the move, then I told her I will give her a callback. I found another company that was a lot cheaper. I called Melissa back and let her know that we weren't going with them and when I told her that, she said that Colonial Van Lines had the best competitive prices out there. She asked what was the name of the company that we were gonna go with. She did some research and told me that that company didn't have a good reputation and wasn't accredited. I looked at reviews and it says that people never got their stuff, or the stuff was broken. I told her that if she were to go above and beyond to do all that, I would go with Colonial Van Lines.
The quote I got was pretty accurate. She told me about the weight that was gonna be allotted to me and how much it was if it was overweight. It was about a couple hundred dollars off because of the weight. We had everything boxed up to where we wanna boxed up. Then they boxed up some stuff that they felt was easier to do. They had to create two boxes to fit handbags, suitcases, backpacks and stuff in it to transport. Me and my family were very satisfied with the service that we got from pick up to delivery. They kept in constant contact with us so we always knew what was going on and where they were located. Great service, great communication, all around, very professional.

The gentleman was also wonderful in making sure I understood all of the paperwork very well and I understood my part of it. "ALL HAT - N0 CATTLE." In Texas this means a good talker but no substance. This company has a great marketing and PR department but do not follow through on their promises. Nicholas ** promised company vans, company employees and a firm delivery date when the packers arrived. The packers showed up late in the afternoon in a rental box truck from Old Bay Meadows movers in Jacksonville Fla, had no idea when my goods would be delivered, had to return another day and said "I don't know what they do with it. I'm taking it back to Jacksonville and going home."
I was assigned an account supervisor named Deion, from whom I received canned and numerous emails promising to be available and requesting my feedback. Not knowing whether our delivery would be in three days or two weeks we had to leave home and drive to our destination and move into a hotel. We repeatedly tried to contact Deion and when we could, were told "I'll check with the mover and get back to you". Our only requirement was to be in by June 30 and the promises continued until finally our delivery was made on July 9.

PERFECT move. After two horrible experiences with other companies, I was braced to be miserable once again. I was very, very pleased with this service from Colonial Van Lines and their partner Cal Van Lines. First off, with an exact list of what was being moved and Colonial providing estimates by weight instead of space, we were only off by 46 pounds. A less than $45 charge. The communication was fantastic throughout the process. They give you the option of cancelling without penalty five BUSINESS days in advance of pickup. This was reassuring to me when we committed in late May. We moved from California to Florida. Pick up was 6/23 and delivery was 7/11. It was perfect timing for us. No hiccups, nothing missing, nothing broken or damaged. I was practically dancing in glee with how smoothly this move went.
When you get that estimate from any company, you need to tell them everything you are going to move, whether or not both your pickup and delivery sites can handle a semi truck, and at both sites what the distance is from truck to the door of the residence. Moving companies need this information to give you an accurate estimate. If you underestimate the number of boxes for kitchen contents, knick knacks, clothing, they will charge you on moving day, as will all companies. Or if you can’t handle a semi truck parking for pickup or delivery, they will have to get a shuttle truck which will cost you more and potentially push your pickup or delivery date. If the truck has to park around the block, you are going to have a “long carry” charge.
Research your move before you get that estimate. We knew all of the details and our charges were almost exact. I’ve learned by doing this with good and bad companies. Kudos to Colonial and Cal Van Lines. Furniture was heavily covered with blankets. Boxes handled gently. No damage it last items. This was a PERFECT move.

Updated on 07/13/2020: Great, up to you, Colonial. Have not yet from dealing with Colonial the past few weeks trying to resolve. You have the opportunity to make it right. Claims people have reached out- cold, unapologetic, offering pennies in compensation when replacing the lost and damaged items will cost me 2x the whole move, and refusing to take responsibility for the damages and illegal and threatening treatment. This is UNACCEPTABLE business practices. You are responsible for property and what the people who show up to do your jobs do and say.
Original review: They seemed organized and official in the planning, but they contract their services out to local companies who don’t know or care about any contracts or promises Colonial made. I had terrible damage done to my building in pickup and has charged to review. Despite the claim made and picture documentation- no responsibility from Colonial. The drop off had a 10 day window and I was supposed to receive 24h notice. I got a call that the mover was outside. And 1 guy, no team, it was like amateur hour, not a professional moving company. It took hours for the man to unload himself. And I learned my bed was dismantled and parts lost- unable to be put together. The mattress was folded and broken.
No responsibility from Colonial. They offered a laughable amount for the damage to the mattress based on weight and ignored the lost item or their duty in it. Then, the deliverer tried the long haul Tactic, and said I owed him cash for it. Unable to pay on the card for the move, he would not document it. When I tried to call the company to check, he grabbed my phone and hung it up. He then refused to leave without another 250 in cash. As a woman alone, I was afraid and paid. Colonial didn’t care or take responsibility. The damage and lost items cost more to replace than the move, and I’ve involved the BBB and authorities for the extortion and threat. Save yourself the time and use any other company.

A packing and pickup window was scheduled over a two day period, and verified by their scheduling dept at the time the order was placed. However, the evening of the first day of that window, they called to say they could not provide the movers that day. The next day, I called early to confirm the movers would be arriving, but they were still unable to commit to providing the service that had been scheduled weeks ahead of time.
I called several times, explaining to the representative that I was selling my house and must have the items moved or risk having the buyers walk away. They offered to refund my deposit. Now, how is that supposed to help? I still had to move, and it's too late to find another moving company on short notice. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and was told, "they're just going to tell you the same thing I told you". I'm still waiting for a call from the supervisor that was promised. Now, I'm stuck without movers and it is costing me tens of thousands of dollars in lost wages, hotel rooms, delayed closing on my house, not to mention all of the difficulty in finding other movers. Do not use this company unless you have several weeks to wait for them to find a truck that was pre-scheduled.

Negative stars - absolutely terrible, unethical service. We scheduled our across the country move well in advance, paid the deposit. The afternoon of the first day of our move window, they told us they didn't have a truck! We had to be out of our house the next day so we had to scramble to find another mover to pick up and put our items in storage. The dispatch supervisor I spoke with could have cared less about not living up to their contract with us. I guess their contracts work only one way and that is to benefit themselves. Moving across country is stressful enough without being stood up on the eve of the last day of the move window. We ended up having to pay several thousand dollars more because of the short notice with the other company and having to store our household goods for a month before that company could get us on a truck. It would be a huge mistake to do business with this company.

However, there was a bit of confusion in our estimate because we ended up needing a shuttle on the delivery end. They asked a lot of questions about the driveway, but they didn't consider asking about the parking situation on the street, so that was a bit of a hiccup. Our driveway was short enough where we wouldn't need a shuttle, but the parking situation on the street wasn't gonna allow for the moving van. Colonial Van Lines fit into my schedule because it was kind of short notice and they were the only ones that were willing to come on such short notice. Their service was awesome. I'm prior military so I've done a lot of moves. I'm normally very skeptical of companies because after I got out, I had some kind of bad moves with some companies, so I was really skeptical with this company just the same way. However, when I put in for the quote and they gave me the quote back, I had somebody call me. I had somebody email me to make sure everything was okay. Then that person went over all the products and all the goods that I had in the house. They made suggestions as to what they could do and what they can't do. Then they told me, "Hey, we'll follow up with you on this and this day." I didn't get a follow-up call like two days ahead of the pick-up date so I was kinda worried.
However, on the day before the pick-up, I did get a call back. They assured me, "Hey, the driver is gonna be here. We spoke to him. He might be a little late coming in because he's in Arizona. He's coming to Arizona, and he said something about the COVID. They were stopping them a little longer,” which was fine. So, I was happy about that. The driver was able to get through whatever the process was way earlier than the time. He did call me. He said, "Hey, is it okay if I come now? We're here. You know, they let us through. If not, I could go sit at the rest stop and wait for the time." I told him he could come.
He came and got all the stuff packed in less than an hour. I was telling him I had to be on the road. I was driving from Arizona to Florida, which is a long drive. When he came to pick up my stuff, I still was like, "This is just too good to be true." I envisioned something to happen. That was my thought process the whole time. I did tell the driver, "Look, I don't know when you're gonna get to Florida, but I want to stop a couple of days in Texas by my family." He said, "Hey, no problem." He's got to go somewhere. He's got to make some other pick-ups. He was like, "I'll call you and I'll let you know when I'm bringing your stuff.” He did call me. One thing that I had told him was I was gonna drop the stuff off at the house. When he called me, I said, “I’m sorry. The stuff was supposed to be dropped off at my storage, which is close to the house.” He said, “Hey, no problem, ma’am. Can I get them at the storage.”
When he dropped off my stuff, he even helped me repack my storage because my daughter and I were just throwing crap in there. He actually fixed the stuff. They quoted me the price and I paid the one half and then I had to pay the other half at drop-off. When I went to pay, he told me that what I had was way less. So it went down. He said that it was less so I paid less. To me, it was a good experience. I was happy. When I spoke to the people at Colonial, I asked, “Who are you? I need to understand.” And they were telling me and explained to me they’re not a broker. They are the company and they have all these different sections. The person who I made the reservation with turned me over to the person who was responsible for the truck guy. And then I also had a person who was responsible for the entire move. So, I had people to contact.

I booked my move with Colonial Vanlines and saying it was an absolutely disaster is an understatement. They were contracted to pick me up in a two-day window but were supposed to pick me up the first day. When that day came, they waited until after the time they were supposed to be there already to call me and inform me there was a problem with the truck and they could not pick me up today and they had no other truck to move my belongings. I was disappointment but understood and wanted an open line of communication to inform me when they could pick me up the next day.
After that first call, they failed to ever call me back during the day to update me on the situation and whenever I called, I got no answers. All the numbers I had to connect me to the people that were supposed to be my moving coordinators for the day, went straight to voicemail. I only got a call back when I said I would need to cancel if they could not guarantee they would pick me up the next day. My lease ended at the end of my second day window, so I had to be out by the end of the day. It was at that point they said they found a different truck to pick me up the next day and told me I would get confirmation the next day.
The next day came and I did not get a call. I had to call, and they informed me the truck was coming. However, the time for them to arrive past and no truck. I had to call again, and it was at this point they told me the truck was having issues and could not pick me up. Which makes me feel like they had lied when they said they found a truck to pick me up. They had no backup plan and did not care that I had to be out of my apartment by end of day.
During this entire period, communication was despicable. No one called and the only time I got information was when I called. No one had called to inform me I would not get a moving truck, and they had no backup plan even though they would not be able to pick me up during the contracted time. I even got hung up on at one point even though I was talking to them calmly trying to figure out a solution. This company was beyond unreliable.
Thank goodness I have dependable friends and family who were able to rent Uhaul last minute at an elevated cost and drive hours to help me out. If this were not done, I would have been stranded on the streets of Chicago with my belongings by my side. We also were not able to get a large enough truck so last minute, so I had to leave some of my belongings on the street (valued between $100-200). So not only did I have to pay for uhaul, I also lost money as I had to get rid of items I wanted to keep. This does not even include the cost of the emotional stress this company caused me and everyone involved.
Colonial did say I would get my deposit back but that has not gone through yet, and I never got even so much as an apology for my horrendous experience. All I got was a bunch of excuses and fine print in my contract. They even called the next day to see how my move went, as if they had no clue they didn’t actually ever pick me up! I have never experienced a company with such horrible communication, follow through, or customer service. They should be ashamed to call yourself the nation’s top moving company because what I experienced was everything but. Avoid this company at all cost!

I was surprised to find out Colonial was only a broker and not actually the mover. But it is what it is and the people that they chose were good and very professional. It was a small move. They came and they did whatever I asked them to do. They went out of their way to be helpful and everything went well. Plus, the quote that I was given at the beginning was close enough in terms of being accurate.

We sold our house in New Jersey and moved to Florida. We moved part of our stuff to Mississippi then part of our stuff down to Florida. We did that ourselves. I went on ConsumerAffairs and Colonial was listed in the top five. At first, the prior estimate they gave was a little low. They really need to have somebody come out and do the estimate, instead of trying to do it over the phone. It's because their ability to be able to see something and have it transferred into weight is a little difficult. I had somebody come out and do that then I forwarded that to Colonial. They partially used that information but the quote still came out more. Colonial is trying to do something different where the industry normally has somebody come out and do a visual. They're usually within maybe $500 difference but this one was way different. This was thousands of dollars difference.
The people who assisted during the move were pretty good. They called me to let me know when the driver was gonna be in the area. I gave the number to the driver to make sure that he called me and I got his number to make sure that I was in place for him to come out and deliver. The coordination was pretty good. And at the time of pickup and delivery, we were prepared.
The load crew who came out and packed were excellent. They were very fast. But whoever did the estimate on the boxes, underestimated the boxes on the wardrobes so they had to improvise. They didn't have enough of the metal bars. They had to run a piece of tape back and forth to create a bar. And whatever they had for wardrobe, they just folded it up and put in a box. We were kind of a little disappointed with that especially my wife was since it was mostly her clothes that got done that way.
But the estimate on the wardrobe boxes was the only thing that I felt that was not done well. I gave them their competitor's quote when they came out. I also told them over the phone, "Here's what they estimated." They might have underestimated the wardrobes. If they had visually looked at it, they probably would have said, "Yeah, I probably need about this many," because those guys are pretty well on target. You usually do 10% or 15% more. They'll bring maybe three or four extra boxes just in case.
Otherwise, I'd most definitely recommend Colonial. I would've used them for my son. He moved a month or two before us and I used Purple Heart movers. It was the most horrible experience of my life and my son's life. The movers dropped and broke stuff. They also lost stuff. No wonder they never came back to ask me for recommendations because they knew they would get a bad one. They were horrible. I don't know who Purple Heart contracted out to do the move, but they were the worst. They were also trying to extort money out of my son because of the flights of stairs. Colonial, on the other hand, did such a good job.

We went with Colonial because of the good reviews and price. It went well with them. Our biggest concern was being in contact with people and they were able to navigate all those challenges. When needed, they wore a mask and they didn't expect us to hover over them. They did a good job of understanding what we wanted to get done and what was important to us and they executed on it. We were happy.
The weight was pretty much spot-on. There was some packing that was underestimated, but it was not a surprise. It was mostly driven by stuff that was in the basement. The movers were great and pretty personable. But we had two chairs damaged. I've reached out to the claims department and they were finalizing unpacking a few of the boxes, but I don't expect anything beyond that. Then, we're putting in a claim but it's gonna be pretty minimal. That was the only thing that could be improved. Given the vast amount of material that was moved, it wasn't bad at all.

I even had a covered barbecue and his people wrapped that. My husband had a Tri Glide, a three-wheeler motorcycle, which is his baby. The driver put that on there and then his people had mattresses going around it, almost like a little carport with it. He ended up having to call a tow truck with a flatbed to load it because he wasn’t taking any chances. Then when we got here, he paid out of his pocket for a tow truck driver to come unload it. He was very professional, easy to work with and easygoing. I would use Colonial again just for him.

California is a very expensive state to live in so we left for a better life, lower cost of living and better school. None of the moving companies are that different from the other so it was hard deciding on who to choose but I ended up with Colonial. The rep who helped with the inventory and the quote was very thorough and had some good ideas about what to take in my car or what not to put in the moving van or truck. They did a great job of walking through the inventory, the house and what they expected that the move to consist of in terms of weight, timing and cost. The actual cost was probably $1,500 more. The packing materials made the difference because the charge didn’t include those.
The manager who assisted during the move was very communicative and responsive so that went well. They talk to you before they come and then until you get to your destination, so that was a good experience. We had some things broken but that happens in a move over several states. I didn't file a claim because I didn't think we'd get a whole lot back. But we finally had two paintings ripped, a big vase that was broken and something else. The more important thing is when they came inside, I had brand new floors put into the house before we moved in and they tracked wet paint through the living room. That was very troubling because I had to have the carpet replaced.
I now have a claim with the moving company. Those movers were saying they didn't do that but they did because it was a brand new carpet. Otherwise, the movers were okay and they were very considerate. They didn't wanna hurt the walls and they did a nice job moving everything in and out to the house, so that's good.

They delivered promptly and safely. I live on a farm in Nebraska. It's a flyover state. I had a great time with Colonial Van Lines. The outfit that they subcontracted it to did all the moving, and they did a great job. They only busted stuff was a really flimsy plastic top and one leg to one of my desks. It wasn't their fault. It was the design of the thing. So, I'm not going after any recourse. They were early on the delivery by about a week. I only asked them two things - to be very careful with one of my stand-up paddle boards. I have five boards, surfboards, stand-up paddle boards, and windsurfers. I also asked them to be very careful with a heavy steamer trunk that held some collectibles of my sons. I asked them to not hand truck it. I was on the third floor in a condo with outside stairs in Renton, and the easiest way would have been to do that. But instead, I asked them to keep it horizontal. They did both of those.
Then, I was afraid it was gonna change trucks, and they couldn't guarantee me that that would not be the case. But it stayed on the same truck the entire trip. So, I'm a very happy camper. It was a lot more money than I anticipated, but I thought I'd have 35 to 50 boxes. I boxed 50 before they got there and they boxed 52 when they got there. But I got all my stuff here, and other than that cheap plastic top and the leg, everything was fine.
I made calls to about four different moving companies and I liked Colonial's customer service, the attitude, and the quote. The quote was off, but it wasn't Colonial’s fault. It was my misinterpretation of the volume and the weight of what I had. I highly recommend Colonial. The crew that handled the move was spot on. They were very careful, very hard working, and in these times of COVID, rather amazing given the potential for all kinds of problems.

Do not under any circumstances use this company to move your belongings. They collect the deposit and farm out the move to the lowest bidder. They are a broker and will sub out the actual move to another company. From this point forward the left hand will not know what the right hand is doing and you will not be able to get accurate information. As a pastor moving from Georgia to Missouri I had to get three bids for moving and Colonial was in the middle. The estimates were presented to the new church I was going to move to as well as the district superintendent. Committee meetings were called as the amount for the move had to be approved at both the church and district level. The original bid was around $4400 with an estimated weight of 7000 lbs.
In early May I sent emails and left voice messages to confirm moving dates that had previously been agreed upon. I received no responses to either. With the move scheduled for June 12th, I finally received a call on June 10th informing me that the movers would arrive between 8:00 and 10:00 am on the 12th, however they were insistent on delivering the load on Monday the 15th which was prior to our agreed up delivery window of the 16th to the 19th. Monday was not possible as that was our travel day to our new location. The movers arrived at 7:00 pm on the 12th with a truck that was too small to accommodate our household. They returned the next afternoon with a rented truck to load the remaining items.
They are wanting to deliver on 6/16 and inform us that our actual weight is over 20,000 lbs and our final bill is close to $13,000. Also that they will need a cashier’s check for that amount less the deposit we paid or they put our items in storage and charge us for that as well. How can an estimate be off by a factor of 3? Total incompetence. An expenditure that is now almost triple what had been approved by a committee would obviously require another meeting as well as getting to the bank to procure the cashier’s check. However, we have been given until 8:00 am the morning of the 17th to come up with the money or the load goes into storage at an additional cost. We have been scammed, extorted and our belongings have been held hostage for a ransom that will be difficult to pay given current circumstances. I cannot emphasize how disappointed and remorseful you will be if you contract a move with this company.

Our experience with Colonial has, soured to the point of no return. Initially, working with Susan and Mina (apologize if the spelling is incorrect) was great and very helpful, but we are now sitting in an empty home with none of our household goods sleeping on hardwood floors in sleeping bags. Even though our contract states that Colonial has a 6 day window to deliver, we inquired three weeks prior to move in date and we told that June 13th wouldn't be an issue and that we should anticipate delivery our goods on the 13th because the goods were in route and we were the first load coming off the truck.
I call multiple times and speak to multiple people (even after hours services) on June 11th, 12th, 13th and then again today on June 15th and every time the representative tells me they need to check with dispatch to get an update (I think this dispatcher is the Wizard of Oz because no one seems to be able to see him or get it touch with him) and no one ever calls back. NOT ONE CALL BACK AFTER BEING PROMISED AN UPDATE ON EACH DAY?!?!
Today, I had to escalate to Frank who was a supervisor, but he couldn't give me any information and he had to find Mina and the mythical dispatcher again to get an update and that what we are experiencing is typical in logistics because they are so busy. I guess too busy to be honest and call a paying customer back. After staying on hold for what seemed like forever, the only thing he did say, was that we had to wait until Tuesday to get a response the the Dispatcher, but our household goods are now in New Jersey in a storage facility? Wait...what?!?
So, we have our goods packed in Sacramento and then brought to Oakland for storage for a month, only to be repacked, sent to New Jersey and then unloaded into another storage facility only to be (at some point) loaded back onto another truck and then delivered? I'm not in the moving business but this sounds like a most inefficient way of moving and lends itself to an increased chance our goods will be damaged. I've gone through 5 cross country moves and never had an experience such as this. I feel as if Colonial Van Lines are lying to me and in fact our goods haven't even left the original storage. If this is what you believe then you should practice what you preach!

But the representative I worked with while the move was happening was okay. The guy that I worked with before that actually booked everything was really great as well.
It was just a personality thing. The rep looked very quick on the phone and was really quickly trying to like figure out the solution before he even heard the whole issue. It was not that he wasn't nice, he completely was, but it was just kind of like that. The only other thing is maybe some of the stuff could have been packed a little bit better. But there was only one thing that got damaged so that was pretty good. Timeline-wise, it was perfect.

They didn't give me an actual estimate until the day of my move and they moved everything that same day.
However, there was a bit of miscommunication during the actual move and I couldn't get a hold of my drivers. They would text me how far they were out and I would try to text them back. But then, the response would come saying that it wasn't the mover's number that I texted. Also, though I paid over the phone, the movers asked for a payment and somebody called me again later asking for a payment. They didn't realize that I had already paid off my whole balance.

So, I needed some mover on short notice and Colonial Van Lines seemed to fit the bill. Everything from the move from the Keys to Batavia, Illinois went absolutely perfect. Then they helped again when some of that furniture was moved from Batavia to Eugene, Oregon. That move went well, except the one piece was broken. That’s just the way that goes. I’m not that great on the computer. I had to fill out something that was supposed to be sent by email. Because I’m not able to get together with family right now with the social distancing anyway, filing a claim for that broken piece didn’t happen.
Colonial could bother to walk people through these forms. They could send them snail mail if the person tells them that computer’s not going to work. There are options that they did not avail themselves. Because if that time ran out, then I’m screwed. Overall, the service was good and things went very well, but I would recommend Colonial with a caveat. Be very careful and make sure that you can handle whatever they throw at you.

I had three companies in mind and I chose Colonial over the other two. I read one or two ratings that said they had no problems with them. And that was what I wanted to know, that they could move us across three states and not have any problems. I talked with two or three different people and I had one person, in particular, to be in touch with the entire time. It was a pleasant experience. The young lady that called me on a regular basis called and talked with my daughter last week because my daughter had the authority to talk with them. She was here and we were in D.C.
The movers were on time and they moved quickly. Some things were not packed as well as I would have wanted them to be packed but they were all little items. We had lived in that particular area for about 30 years so there were a lot of stuff. The young men were extremely nice and polite. I had no problems with them. They were coming and going and were very careful. There was a knob on the front where they bumped something against that and broke that. I also only found maybe three or four broken items. But the young lady that I talked with previously already told me that I could file claims on that. I haven't done yet that because I haven't gone through the other boxes. I’ve got about five boxes to go through.
Generally, someone will come out and take a look at everything. That gives you an opportunity to walk from room to work with the person. This time, we didn't have that opportunity. That’s the only thing that I would have liked to have happened before the day of the move for me to show them what I had designated to leave behind or throw away instead of coming in early that day and packing up everything and leaving that afternoon and me not having an opportunity to do that. We’re seniors and there's the Corona. There were several things that were pushed to the side that I would not have packed had I had the opportunity to do that. The virus has control of everything right about now. Other than those, the overall experience was pleasant.

From start to finish we had anxiety about all this going to work. So we decided to go with a big company for peace of mind and found out that Colonial Van Lines is not no.1 and is not what they say they are and use the small flaky movers to move your precious moments. And not with the BBB or they have their own protected employees either. After losing our deposit with colonial and went with an independent moving contractor we moved.
Kris,
I so apologize for the issues you've had with your move here. We in the Resolutions Department have been made aware of your issues and will be reaching out to you in the early afternoon today. If you'd like you can reach our Resolutions Manager Donna at her direct phone number 954.958.2253. We look forward to speaking with you soon.

Horrible company. DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT do business with these people. First of all they are NOT a moving company, they do not own and trucks or vans and do not do any moving, they contract out to other movers. Their customer service is horrible, when you actually do get in touch with someone or an account manager, they act as if you are bothering them.
We set up a move with them, and they changed the pickup date without calling us, we had to track them down, then when the driver was late, we couldn't get in touch with anyone at Colonial. Now, almost 10 days later, we still don't have our furniture, and again we had to track them down to find out that supposedly the company they contracted to can't deliver when they were supposed to because their truck broke down, even though they say they have other trucks, nothing has been done. We keep getting the run around, and nobody there seems to be able to do anything except make lame excuses. Again, DO NOT use this company for your move, believe all of the negative reviews online, avoid them like the plague.

We were moving from New Jersey to South Carolina. Originally, we were gonna move ourselves but then coronavirus kicked off and we didn't have the ability to stay in hotels or get people to help us load a U-Haul. We also had two antique cars that needed to be moved. We decided to hire movers and Colonial Van Lines was able to coordinate that for us. I appreciated the entire process of moving through them. Everything was explained to me from start to finish. There were several levels of quality control where people called me to go over the move, the process and the dates to make sure that I understood everything that was going on.
Everyone whom I dealt with at Colonial was very professional. From the person who booked our order to the person who did the quality control check, his supervisor and the person who was our agent for the actual move, everyone was very helpful. Plus, they stuck to the dates they gave us. We were given a small timeframe. We weren't sitting around forever waiting for the movers to show up. The fact that we had already put everything in a storage unit because we had sold our home and our in-laws’ home complicated our move. We had no way to inventory everything that was in the storage unit. Colonial worked with us on coming up with an accurate weight for the amount of things that we had in that storage unit.
When the moving company came, they treated our stuff with care. There was no flinging of boxes and I could tell that they really knew what they were doing. They worked well as a team and really took care of our household's contents. I have heard so many horror stories about moving companies and so I was really nervous. But then, everything went the way I expected it to.

I was searching for different movers online. I considered two others, but I left messages and didn't get any responses back. We moved from state to state and Colonial Van Lines kept in touch with us every couple of days. They were really good about that. It was also pretty short notice but they took care of all of it. We had two different moving coordinators and transition from the first guy to the second went fine. They were really accurate. It costed us a couple $100 more, but they did a lot of stuff that I don't even know if they should have done. We were gonna pack everything ourselves except for the great big things and mirrors and pictures. But they brought the extra boxes and I didn't have anything broken. My mirrors all came intact, and I have a quite a few mirrors. It went absolutely wonderful with Colonial.

I enjoyed talking with a guy named Kirk from Colonial Van Lines, and the price was right. I moved to a different state. I had lived here for 75 years and I remarried and lived in new Hampshire for two years and my new husband died so I came back home. Everything was fine. In fact, the kids who packed me up on a Saturday were even willing to get me here on a Sunday, which I thought was a little extra special. I was very pleased.

Colonial Van Lines' price was way more competitive than some of the other companies I looked into. I was having a 700-mile move from Missouri to South Carolina. I had to change the moving date and that was not a problem with them. I was happy about that. Also, they were in touch with me throughout the process. They were always checking in, double-checking and triple-checking things which I liked. But when the final date was agreed on for when the movers would come, there was some kind of misunderstanding and the movers came a day early. Apart from that, I really appreciated the customer service. I would definitely recommend them to other people.

The people who work for Colonial were great. I was initially worried because they're like a broker situation. They hire someone to do it for you, and I had the person on her side, and then someone on the actual moving company side is like coordinator and they called me constantly. As far as the timeframe, they called me and they said there was gonna be a delay and then they ended up coming in a day early. Their price was a little more than some, but a lot less than others. They were like mid-range.

Colonial Van Lines was doing their price by the weight instead of cubic feet. I also didn't want to just use a broker. I wanted somebody that was still gonna be responsive to me the day of the move and not just leaving us to deal with the movers on our own. And Colonial seemed to be very responsible in terms of staying in touch with you and their rep sounded like a person I wanted to work with.
We had a slight misunderstanding with Colonial. We had some glass in a china cabinet and they said they would use mirror cartons to do that. They charge $27 for a carton which seems very steep. I had some mirror cartons. When I talked to the person from Colonial, they said that if we had our own mirror cartons, we wouldn't be charged for that. But that wasn't quite true because part of the price that they charged was for the actual packing. So, I still had to pay for that packing or they wouldn't insure it as being packed by the mover.
Everything was on the right timeline and the movers were very considerate and polite. They were doing a good job packing well. You could tell that they were taking care of your stuff which I appreciated that. The company stayed in touch with us the whole time and kept checking back to make sure everything was okay. They even connected us with the driver named and he was a very nice guy. We're very happy with them.

We moved from Wisconsin to Florida and it was pretty good with Colonial's reps. We had a little bit of trouble getting hold of people sometimes but it was all during this Coronavirus thing, so everybody wasn't always in the office. Also, we ended up paying quite a bit more than we expected, but I think that we had a lot more boxes than they expected, and they explained why. Then, they had to put our furniture in storage and all of the movers were great. It went into storage for a couple of months and then it was delivered to Florida. Everything went very smoothly and the delivery went beautifully. Once we had a date, they were here at 7 o'clock in the morning and they were very nice. They put everything together that we expected and everything went very well.

I talked to three companies and Colonial Van Lines seemed the most helpful. The first person I talked to at Colonial was Hana and she explained everything. She got a lot of information about what exactly we were moving and she came up with an estimate. The estimate was accurate. She called a lot and made sure I had everything I needed to know. It was a good process.
We moved from Macon, Georgia to Summerville, South Carolina. It's about 250 miles. The only special request we did was we had to sort of split up the move because when we got to Summerville, we had an apartment as well as a garage to move things to. The crew was good and they moved quickly. They were friendly, helpful and professional. They loaded up, drove, and unloaded all in one day. We moved into an apartment because we're building a house, and we've decided we'll use them again to move from the apartment to the house.

There were two or three of them that were part of our team and they all got back to us promptly. I would call and leave a voicemail and within an hour or less, they would call me back. They were Johnnies-on-the-spot and kept us informed. And the moving company that they found was absolutely stellar. Even with the COVID-19 stuff going on and everything, they still were awesome. They were on time and they did what they said they were going to do and for the price they said they were going to do it for. Everything was upfront, honest, and open.

The problem with all moving companies is that once you start getting quotations, you get an estimated one. All the salespeople I worked with from Colonial and the other companies don’t give the right estimation. I got five quotations, either by volume or weight and they didn’t get it accurate. It is frustrating so it would be better for them to find a more ideal way to get estimations. In this case, we cannot compare quotations between companies because each company has its own chart. But this is the only problem that I faced during this move. Colonial charges on weight and not the volume, which was mainly why I decided on them. I felt safer with weight. Colonial transported my goods around 1,500 miles and I received the items before the given date. Luckily, I was available to receive them.

I had a bad experience from another company a couple of months ago when I moved up north and when I came back to Florida, Colonial Van Lines was great. The group that picked me up in New Jersey was wonderful and the people who delivered to Orlando did an exceptional job. Usually, they're not like that. The way that it was packed by the people who picked it up was like, "Wow." They were nice and then, they took the stuff out and took it apart the right way when I got here. Those guys got it in and took their time. They put everything together and cleaned everything up when they were done.
The Colonial called me almost every day and let me know updates. I got four people who called me and it made me feel good because their overkill is better. I appreciated it. When they got here, they called me afterwards. I want the people who did it to get kudos for a good job. It was an exceptional kind of experience and service excellence. I'm gonna use them again when I move. I told somebody else that they don't have to worry about their stuff and to talk to Colonial. I felt comfortable and when the guys picked it up, they were personable. They're from Brooklyn, they had a Russian accent. They were so nice and it was funny. They were sitting there and talking about the country. When they were doing the work, they would talk to you. So, they're exceptional people. Then, I heard some other good things about them. One of my friends moved and he told me Colonial was the one that he used. He told me to use them.

My experience with Colonial Van Lines and their contracted agent, Cal Van Lines, has been a nightmare. I hired them in March for a late March move out of state. My pick-up date was supposed to be for 3/31 but they offered to pick it up early by a few days (on 3/28). I was told by Colonial and Cal Van lines both that I would get a call to confirm the pickup a day before but got nothing. I was told that they would arrive at my residence anywhere from 7 to 10 am on Saturday 3/28. They were supposed to call me 30 mins prior to arrival to inform me that they were on their way. None of this happened. I never got a call the day before. I never got a call 30 mins prior. I reached out to Colonial and they also attempted to call their dispatch team but they did not get any response on their end either.
I got a call when they arrived. Upon arrival, I had the truck follow me towards the closest entrance to my apartment. I told them which entrance to park near. They decided to park where they wanted to without regard to the strict rules and regulations of my complex. The two movers were dressed like they rolled out of bed. Their appearance was off putting, unhygienic and not professional as promised by Colonial. They followed me and my child into my unit. We are in the middle of a pandemic, in the heart of Los Angeles, and one of the movers began to cough.
I had requested that the movers wear disposable gloves and a mask to help protect myself and my infant child prior to their arrival. Both movers did not wear either. I had also asked my customer service rep to notify the movers that if they present with cold symptoms (fever, cough, etc), they would not be allowed near me or my child. Colonial assured me that they would make sure of this. That did not happen.
When I asked the mover if he had cold symptoms after he coughed, he denied but continued to have a coughing fit. I asked him to please step outside and return with a mask. He stepped out. Once he was gone, I immediately called Colonial and expressed my concern and frustration re the issue. The rep attempted to reach out again and was unable to reach the management team at Cal Van Lines. The movers came back to my unit and said they dont have any masks "because there is a shortage". They wore industrial type of reusable gloves.
I expressed my concern to them as well and a mover began to get frustrated that I was hesitant to let them into my unit. They suggested that I leave the apartment and return once they were gone but that was not a possibility as LA was on lockdown and I did not have a car to go and sit in. I had no other option but to stay in my apartment since I had to fly out within 24 hours. One of the movers began to laugh when I told him that I was scared of getting sick which I found to be unprofessional and childish.
I caved and allowed them in once I moved my child into the bathroom where I ended up barricading the both of us for the duration of the move (4 hours). Once inside, the movers continued to speak in a different language, coughed and sneezed throughout the entire 4 hours and did not communicate with me at all while I was sitting in my bathroom for hours.
I had directed them on what we needed to move yet they forgot several of my items behind. They notified me that they were done, I thanked them and they left without responding. They left behind trash and I was charged $300+ from my complex since I did not have the ability to remove it alone by myself with my child in my arms. There was no communication. They would not speak to me because they were offended that I requested masks and gloves for the protection of myself and an infant.
I called Colonial Van Lines a few day later to discuss the events. They were documented by my rep Jared. He states that this was all communicated to management but I have yet to hear back from them. I have religiously contacted Colonial to inquire on the status of my move. Every single time I have called, they have said that Cal Van Lines has told them to call back in a few days for an update on the status. So, so far, this has been the run around the last 5 times.
Over the weekend, I was informed that the items that were picked up from my residence on 3/28 would be delivered in the 4/4-4/15 window. I was told that my rep would be calling me back on Monday the 13th for the final update. I called back today since I of course did not hear back or receive a response to my email. Upon calling, I was told that the move would be delayed and that they would not be reaching my new residence (1700 miles away) on the 15th. No reason or explanation was given. They only said that they would escalate this further.
When I was shopping around for movers, Colonial was contacted and they would call me back every single day, multiple times a day, to lock in a scheduled move. The second I gave them my deposit, I stopped hearing back from my manipulative rep Diana. She assured me that Colonial has been around for 20+ years and they are only contracted with legitimate movers. She is a used car salesman and quickly convinced me to proceed with Colonial because of their excellent ratings and reputation, despite what the BBB- Better Business Bureau had listed on there. After they got my 1000+ deposit, I felt ghosted until I repeatedly called and tried to inquire information re my move. Zero communication. Updates 1-2 days prior to the scheduled pick up date. No time to prepare for anything last minute so I had my move ready to go 1.5 weeks in advance since I then felt I couldnt rely on these people.
They also document notes on their end regarding any "pertinent" data that they might find useful; for example: the fact that I am a single parent with an infant. I had mentioned this to Diana on the first day when we chatted in a friendly manner and she must have documented this. When I was speaking to her partner Jared, weeks later, he somehow knew this information and said "I understand it must be hard as a single mother to go through a move". I never spoke of this to him. Why would anyone document this information and then repeat it back to me by accident on a different day? I felt so violated by him saying this. Again, off putting and made me cringe at the idea of having to speak to him again.
So, my entire apartments belongings are still in California, as I wait for them to give me another bogus estimate of when it will be delivered. Not only am I afraid of my things not showing up, I am so terrified that Cal van lines has purposefully damaged by goods and is delaying by delivery out of spite. I just want my baby's things returned to me in the condition it was sent in. I have yet to hear back from Colonial. My order number is **. I will be taking legal action this week since I will not have anything delivered to me on 4/15 as promised.

It didn’t go too bad with Colonial. I initially put out some requests for quotes, and I got a lot of different companies coming back, like some of the majors, Allied, and then some fly-by-night brokers. After talking to some of the different people in the business, the old saying, “If it's too good to be true…” was very evident in this situation. After evaluating the quotes that I got, Allied was very high. They were in the 20,000+ range. The smaller guys, once I started reading the fine print on their contracts, had all kinds of hidden charges. Their $4,000 quote would have probably quickly turn into $10,000 to $15,000.
It fell in between the little guys that were gonna bump up your amount and then the big guys whose quotes were around 7,000 or 8,000. But Colonial’s contract was pretty solid. They weren’t playing any of the games. They indicate steps, but it's a standard in the industry. They were upfront about everything. I didn’t get any hidden costs and when I got the quote, it seemed pretty fair, in line with what I was getting. Colonial did the initial inventory over the phone. When a guy came out, the amount of stuff we had was far more than what they surmised over the phone. The whole thing went up about $2,000.
The other thing that was important was that they only charge by weight. The other scammers, what they do is they charge by square footage in the truck. You're at their mercy to whatever they'll say what you fill the truck up with. If they quote you at one price, they can say, “We quoted at this amount per square-footage of the truck, but you actually took up this amount of square footage. Instead of 7,000, you owe us 20,000.” And you really don’t have any way to prove it. With Colonial, you're only getting charged for whatever the weight is, so there's no way to scam you that way because they don’t have any say-so over the weigh station.
There was a couple of times that I had to contact them for things but they were pretty on top of staying in touch with me through the whole thing. They were accurate on what they said and what unfolded and actually happened. There were no big surprises. All in all, they seemed pretty solid as a company. The only area I would say that needs to be improved is they aren’t jumping through hoops to help me resolve my damage issue, which I'm waiting for all of this to play out. That was a little bit disheartening. They damaged our hardwood floors and some other things. They were demanding two written estimates to fix the floor in order to send me money to hire somebody. I was having a real hard time getting anybody to come out to the house. Unfortunately, it fell on this whole virus thing and everything shut down, so I’m stuck. I'm just hoping that they don’t say, “You take too long. We're not gonna give you anything now.”

We moved from San Diego to Georgia. We started moving in December because I had to make a separate trip out with our kayaks with my truck, and then went back home. It was the worst month of the year to move but you get a better price according to the moving guy and I like Colonial's price.
The moving coordinators were fine. They called often to make sure what was supposed to be taking place. There were multiple coordinators handing it off to another person. I found out later that they were actually a courier. Colonial just hires trucking companies to come and pick up your stuff. I thought I was picking one that the side of the truck would say their company name but it didn't.
The guys that they hired were the best packers and one guy was a real quality person. He made sure all happen properly. We had nothing broken. He hired guys that packed everything we had up great. The guys that he hired locally in Atlanta to come up here and take the stuff out the truck and put it in our house were great. The guy that I had was excellent.

The original person that I spoke to from Colonial was amazing. She made me feel super calm and she called me back a few times with a few different prices. I felt she was really gonna take care of me. She understood that the move was not a choice and that we were kind of under the gun. She kept communicating to me different scenarios of what the move could look like.
The move was from California to Florida which was 2,700 miles. The one who helped during the move was nice although he wasn’t warm and fuzzy. Moving day is a very traumatic day. He was super business-like and he kept measuring things. The price that I was quoted doubled by the time he was done. But he labeled everything properly. We got out within the hour that we said we were going to.
The items went from the truck that we saw then it went into a U-Haul. The U-Haul was the truck that ended up coming into the neighborhood in Florida. They said the truck wasn’t allowed to be in our neighborhood yet there are many trucks that come here. I didn’t understand that and they charged me extra for that. When we opened the U-Haul, everything had been squished in there. The boxes looked like they had all been flattened by a pancake. There were three things that were broken like the appliance that makes my smoothies. I also had the Corningware, like one of those blue dishes that you bake a casserole in. My television also still has a little bit of line through it.
The total of all of that may have been $400 and I didn’t even file a claim for it because remarkably, nothing else was damaged. It was just shocking when they opened the U-Haul. I took pictures of it and I was like, “Oh, my God. What is gonna happen right now?” But we had everything. The two guys that came worked their tails off. They said they had been sleeping in the U-Haul to get it from wherever to our house. Overall, the damage was minimal.

Whatever moving window I was promised at the beginning didn't materialize. The agent involved kept me informed all the time, so it was more annoying than really inconvenient. But on the other hand, the people who showed up did a superb job. They wrapped everything up. Everything that was being moved was fragile furniture and so they were very careful.
Then the delivery people gave a delivery window, but I told them I couldn't do that ‘cause this was furniture from my deceased father’s apartment, and so I had to go back for the service. But they came on the day they were supposed to and moved everything in quickly. There was no damage to any of the property. These people were friendly and professional. So, once the move actually got started, it was excellent. It was just a slow process to get there. I don’t live in a big city, so I understood that part of the problem was they were sending it to a rural situation. But instead of saying the pick-up windows would be at a specific time, they could say, “When we make this estimate, we hit it 80% of the time.” They should give a sort of probability. That might help. But in the end, if they couldn't find someone to pick it up between those three days, they couldn't really find one. It was not a big deal.
Thank you for the review about your move Matthew!

I like the price of Colonial Van Lines. They were pretty responsive as well. My experience with their rep was very good. The quote given was good and it was accurate. The account manager was very good too. They kept in constant contact. I heard from them at least once a week, so no complaints at all.

I came back from London from my job, and they were moving me back to the New York office, and my stuff was in Texas. I only had three weeks going out and doing quotes. Most of the people didn’t have that working in their timeline and schedule. Also, a lot of them didn’t want to carry my load ‘cause it wasn’t the minimum capacity of pounds and I guess the summer months is where they get most of their money. It was only Colonial and this other company that were able to do it in the timeline I was going to be in Texas and Colonial's pricing was more doable for me and my company.
Customer service was great ‘cause they gave me a lead person to contact. After everything got signed, she called me to let me know when the schedule window for the pickup. When they picked up my car, they told me the day before that they were coming. Then she called me again the day of and told me the schedule window which was 10:00 to 1:00. The person that was picking up my car called me and told me that he was about 30 minutes away which I was expecting through the delivery window. He came at 12:00 PM.
Then the two guys that picked my stuff up from storage called me about an hour and a half before they would reach me at the storage unit. When that happened, I headed down there during that time. They were about 20 minutes off of schedule, which was no big deal to me, ‘cause they couldn’t find the place off of the throughway. They kept in constant contact to let me know where they were and what time they expected to be there. Since most of my stuff was mostly packed up, the moving out of storage went by completely fast once they got there. Overall, Colonial was fine in my books.
A great review Sajjad! Thank you for letting us make this move happen!

Everything went pretty good. Everybody was really informative. Colonial was pretty accurate with their services and the expectations that they set. The only thing I was a little upset about was they were estimating that the mover was gonna be there on the last two days of our window. The rep said that I had to follow up with him a few days before or the day before. But he called me the day before and he said the mover would not gonna be here until three days later after our moving window because he had to do drop-offs. So that kinda pissed me off because my stuff was not gonna be here. I took off work to do it that day. I have two small kids.
We got accustomed to the fact that the mover was not gonna be here till Friday instead of Tuesday. But the day after the rep told me that the driver was gonna be delayed, the driver called me and said that he was gonna be there in a couple of hours. We agreed to do it. He didn't get to our storage unit until 4:00 pm and it got dark here by 5:30. They weren't even done unloading stuff until about 11 at night. Our storage unit is 30 minutes away from our house because it's cheaper and there's more room there for even trucks. So we weren't able to get anything out of the storage unit and it was hard getting stuff out of it because we weren't able to sort anything or tell them to put stuff here or there. But the driver was great. We really liked him. He was really nice and he busted his butt.

Colonial Van Lines could accommodate my timeframe. We were moving my aunt from one city to another state. We were moving from Houston, Texas to Augusta, Georgia, and I had a special request. I had to have two storage units because I don't live in Texas. I was really on a tight timeframe. My plane left on Friday, but Colonial could not pick up the items until Saturday. So, they had to make arrangements with the owner of the storage facility. They had to ensure that they were getting the right storage because there were two storage units. One stayed and the items stayed. On the other storage unit, the items left with them. Also because the truck was so big, they could not get it to the front door of the storage unit. So, they had to make an accommodation for that.
I ended up paying a little more, but that wasn't their fault because I had forgotten to include my aunt's piano. The person that assisted us during the move was great. She constantly called me to make sure everything went okay. One thing that I did not like was they don't have an electronic DocuSign. The world today is all virtual. You do everything on a computer. Fortunately, this happened in February, so it was right before the lockdown. But in the midst of everything that I had to do in five days, I had to go to a FedEx office to print out the document and sign it physically, scan it back in, and email it back to them. That was too much. The world is too technologically efficient, so that was ridiculous.

When I was moving from Texas to Arizona, I chose to use Colonial Van Lines. They were responsive and had pretty good pricing overall. Two individuals helped me with getting prepped. We had multiple calls over a few weeks to get ready and they followed up by phone and email. They were very responsive too. The quote was off by less than 10%, which was not that bad. The movers were on time, polite, kind, quick and efficient. However, about 50% of the boxes weren’t marked so when we were moving in, we had pretty much no idea where the boxes should go, which caused a little bit of extra work on our part. We had to open the boxes to figure it out. And we still have some boxes in storage. If they had clearly labeled the boxes, it would have been flawless.
Understood. Thank you for sharing Michael, that is good feedback for us to have.

I did some research, and looked at the Better Business Bureau and at reviews. I went with Colonial Van Lines with their guidelines as far giving you a max estimate and the use of weight to determine your final price as opposed to other companies that I’ve heard about that give you a quote and then the prices jacked up at the end because the guys are slow or they take more time.
I initially dealt with Gary and he was really detailed. It was great. But when the second guy, Paul, got in touch with me, some of the things weren’t right on the evaluation sheet, which I was surprised about because we took so much time doing them. Paul fixed them, but when I got to the finalizing person, everything was screwed up on my sheet. They said that my zip code wrong. They had that I had an elevator in that place, but I didn’t. They also didn’t have a couple of things on my sheet, like big items. I was really not happy. But she straightened everything out luckily. But it made me nervous. When the day of the move came, it ended up being a seamless, perfect move. The moving crew couldn’t have been better. They had great communication, professionalism, and they were everything that I’d want.
Thank you for letting us set things straight Valerie! This is useful feedback for us and our Quality Assurance department to have.

Some of the competition quoted me unreasonably low prices that sounded not credible. Also, I went on Google and Colonial was on a multitude of lists and places that you can trust. Everything was fine with the one who arranged the move. However, I complained that the original move didn’t use the list I gave and the movers actually forgot some stuff. And one or two items I actually had to throw out. I literally had to take the truck down before they left the block to put some other stuff on. It was an officer chair.
The only thing that actually annoyed me was the original move because they forgot stuff, and they went through with me again that morning but that was 6:00 AM. I was not at my best. So, that’s the biggest complaint I had was to do everything the last minute on no sleep. The guy said I had a list with them and then they could have gone over the list as opposed to running through my house again while I was half asleep. The only thing I threw out was a folding chair.
Also, I didn’t get one of the boxes because I don’t have a leather winter coat. Somebody called me a month ago and said they were going to see if there was a box lying around. I don’t know if anything was ever done. It was somewhere in early March. It seemed the same call, and they asked me, and I said the same thing. I’m missing the winter coat. They said they will look into it.

When I was going down from Atlanta to Florida, I did some search and used United Van Lines. They did okay. The price was a little bit more than United Van Lines. To move back a year later, I started my search again and saw Colonial Van Lines. For the most part, they did a good job. The initial conversation was good. I felt like they would stay with it and they did. They kept asking how I felt. I took a chance and changed from United Van Lines to Colonial thinking that they would do better.
The only issue we had was with a dining table. It sits on a pedestal and when Rooms To Go, where I purchased it from, delivered it, it was one piece. I explained that to the movers, but in spite of that, the mover had separated the pedestal from the tabletop, which surprised me. Now it is a two-piece unit. They looked under to see how it was put together and saw the screws. They said that they'd put it back together when they get down to the destination. They tried screwing it and using some tools. They then said that it was good. But it’s not. The tabletop wobbles on the pedestal. I even had a handyman look at it. He said he tried something, but it’s not the same. Once you detach something like this, it never goes back to the same way.
It could be worse, but it leaves some kind of bad distaste. Every time I see it, I get the whole story in my head. I should have insisted and prevented them from separating the two. I could have helped them get through the door as one unit. Going back, I could have stayed with United and I would not have had the problem with the dining table.

I found that Colonial Van Lines was easy to work with. I also like that it goes by weight. And so, I had a bit of control over what was going. And also, this was my first non-army move, and I know that the army goes through Colonial often. And so, I was more comfortable with that moving style. There were two people that talked to me. One helped me do the initial estimate, and then another person contacted me and did a more precise estimate, and both estimates came in underweight. So, I feel like the questions that they asked could have been a little bit better. Also, there were a couple of things that were damaged, but they were just an accident. I have the claims form and I'm gonna fill that out.

When they transfered, it was carelessly done, damaging furniture, tv, and plastic tubs. They must have driven backwards through the grand canyon. After arriving late, My things were thrown like garbage breaking tubs and crushing boxes. Many things missing. Little compensation at a high price. After trying to contact company for 3 months they offered me less than a couple hundred dollars stating because I didnt claim they were missing the day they arrived, they were not responsible. Make sure you open every box and check every item because they will not care. Someone else will get your silverware like mine.

I was moving across state lines. I already live in the state where I was moving to, but all my stuff was back where I was moving from. And so, I couldn't be on location at the storage unit to do the walkthrough for them to assess how much they thought the stuff would weigh. So, for the estimate, that was really helpful for me because Colonial Van Lines was the only one who was able to do an estimate based off a phone call with me, and going through room by room with my stuff and asking what I had. The rep's name was Terrence and he was great. He was really professional and confident. I felt very secure and good.
They told me that they would probably overestimate it just to be on the very safe side. And it ended up being an overestimate, which was a relief. I was pleased with it overall. They were pretty accurate for a house that someone was moving from where every room is packed. But since we were moving from a smaller apartment, it ended up being less, which was expected. My husband got a job in Delaware. I moved from Arkansas and I’m getting ready to retire from the military. Colonial's customer service was great. It was a two-bedroom townhouse move to a house and they went over the list by room. Everything was good. Other than that the third party payment from the employer was the only challenge. I picked the moving company. My husband’s company was paying for it and they were expecting to get an invoice. However, at the drop-off, the guys would not unload the truck until they got paid and so that wasn’t coordinated well. But the company used a debit card. They charged although that wasn’t how they normally do the process, they’d rather have the invoice.
The account manager was friendly and followed up to make sure that everything was going well with the movers. The movers came in and packed up everything. I never had that before. They helped me out a lot because when I unpacked, it made it a lot easier ‘cause all the boxes were labeled. They called me and said that someone was coming to pick up the stuff and they'd guide me through the whole move. They said it would take at least three days because they were only allowed to drive 500 miles a day. But the move was a lot faster than we anticipated. They picked up my stuff on Saturday and then the movers called me and said they were ready to give me my stuff on Sunday night. That was a little bit of an inconvenience. We didn't expect it to be that fast. I was still in New Jersey and I wasn't prepared. Then the moving coordinator said that that he was not working over the weekend but he'd call me first thing Monday and we'd hash this out. The trip was completed by Monday
Colonial was accurate with the pricing and the people who came to move my stuff were excellent. They offered help. They told me not to touch anything and that they'd take care of it. It took them about two hours to load everything up. The people who picked up my stuff were very good. On the other hand, I wasn't there to receive it because it was just so fast. When they dropped everything off, they only had one person working and I had to pay somebody to go over there and stand by with them because I wasn't there. She even had to assist and some things were very heavy. I kept calling Colonial because they needed help and they said they were sending somebody. It took them six hours to unload that truck.

We originally moved all of our content into a storage unit in Arizona. The company that did that move, All My Sons, was quoting us to move our Arizona to California content from the storage unit to our home in California. But they did such a terrible job on the initial first move to get everything into the storage that we decided we did not wanna go with them. I looked online for interstate removal companies along with their reviews. I found Colonial Van Lines. I also got three different quotes from different companies.
I got a rep from Colonial who was nice and very polite. He was responsive and quick. I was a little bit annoyed because I got the quote then the next day when I said I was interested in booking, the prices had gone up overnight. The rep said they had a price increase. There was no warning at the beginning of that. I got a second quote and booked on that one. The quote was the only piece that I was a little bit disappointed with. But in the end, it was like it was still underquoted even though it cost me another $1,000.
The moving team was great. They were on time and they helped to rewrap some of the items that All My Sons had done a really bad job with. Some of the items would not have been safe to transport for a long distance. The process took a bit longer than the Colonial team expected but when they got it up to California, they were brilliant. They remembered what was in most of the boxes. We told them where something went and they put that and the associated items there.
We’ve moved 30 times and we’ve moved internationally 4 times. Colonial was the best we’ve had. Even at the end when it was time to leave and everything had been taken off the truck, one of the guys named John still asked us if there was anything we wanted them to assemble. They didn’t run off. Usually, as soon as the last box is off the truck, companies run. There were two guys with the moving team and John was really calm. We only kept him for another 20 minutes while we assembled the bed. He helped my husband.

Colonial seemed to be the best priced and they were willing to work with me in my special situation. I moved to a house in New Jersey but haven’t sold my old house. I wanted to leave furniture there for staging as long as possible and I was accommodated on that. The reason for my move was I found a house that was more than spectacular and I decided to go for it. It's an old property built in 1750 and it's on a property with a lake. It's everything I need.
Interaction with Colonial was fairly open and to the point. It was much more detailed than I was used to but I was willing to do it. It was a good experience. I was looking forward to the pickup and delivery. I was very much prepared. The only problem I had was they informed me that they wouldn’t go up to my attic, which was up these temporary stairs. It was pretty shaky. I had to bring all the stuff down from the attic and that took me a while, but it could be done. I dealt directly with the driver and he seemed to manage everyone. He was fairly knowledgeable and experienced. It worked well. Everyone else seemed to go to work and got to do what was done. I've moved several times and there was always an issue. There were lot of things to do but this was as carefree as possible. I was very pleased.
Thanks for everything David! And congrats on the BEAUTIFUL new house!

Original Review: March 4, 2020
Like many reviewers before me, I was duped by the adroit pitch of the sales representative. She walked me through what would surely be a professional and uncomplicated move. It didn’t take long, however, until the red flags started waving. I have written a story below regarding my experience, the moral of which is DO NOT HIRE COLONIAL VAN LINES!!! I’ll break down the bullet points for those that don’t want to read the whole story.
• We were not provided the weight of the truck on arrival, as promised.
• We were not provided the updated weight after pickup, as promised.
• I was met with a condescending attitude by the staff.
• Though the delivery address never changed, the company decided last minute that they would need a shuttle to bring the items to my home and I incurred an additional fee of nearly $400 for the service, which was not included in the original quote.
• The truck arrived several days after the delivery window had expired, which happened to be in the middle of a trip that I had planned. Even though they were the ones who were several days late they charged ME a storage fee!!
• The moving company called me on a Friday afternoon requesting payment for delivery. They said they were closed on the weekend and could only process my payment within the next five hours. If I did not call back in time then I would have to pay them CASH on delivery!! I happened to be on a transcontinental flight at the time and had no way to return their call. They were, fortunately, able to get in touch with my husband. They instructed him to EMAIL the credit card information. He refused, as email is not a secure method of payment. He was ultimately able to give it to them over the phone before they closed. Otherwise we would have had to scramble to somehow get enough cash on a weekend to get our furniture released to us.
• The movers finally arrived and left us with damaged furniture and HUGE, DEEP scratches on our brand new, beautiful floor despite the cardboard and blankets we had put down to protect it.
• The tape the moving company wrapped around all of our belongings was incredibly difficult to remove and left green residue on everything it touched.
• The final delivery weight was EXACTLY the same weight as the estimate. How is that possible?! Did they even weigh it??
• I was never, not once, offered any apology for any of this.
Here is my story: Once upon a time there was a young, talented, and wise sales representative working in a far off establishment known as Colonial Van Lines. Her skill and cunning were unequaled and she was a great success, but don’t be fooled, for she is the villain of this tale. One day a hopeful and naïve young couple came to her. They were looking for a way to move their small castle to a faraway kingdom. “Fear not,” she told them, “for I have the solution you seek.”
She made wonderful promises and spun tales of other’s successes. The couple was thrilled and agreed to sign the contract. Once signed, the sales representative disappeared in a puff of smoke never to be seen again, with only her assistant remaining behind. The assistant was bitter and dissatisfied with her lot and she treated the couple poorly indeed. Nonetheless, they looked forward to the day they would pack up all their treasures for the move across the land.
Here’s where I’m going to get real… The red flags I mentioned above? Well they began to appear shortly before my move date when I was introduced to another member of the team. This new person was not as open as the original sales rep. She seemed annoyed by my questions and I got the impression that she thought I was wasting her time when I called her up to ask about inventory changes. On moving day, two men in a small truck showed up to collect our belongings. I have no complaints for the men themselves; they took good care of our furniture. They, however, did not provide me with the promised paperwork regarding the weight of the truck prior to pickup. Nor was the truck big enough. If we had not decided to leave behind some of our furniture, there was no way it would have all fit.
They loaded up what we did want and drove off. I waited 24 hours for a follow up phone call from Colonial telling me the weight of my items. (This was one of the many items promised me by the sales rep.). I finally decided to call and ask for an update. The woman who received my call spoke to me in an incredibly condescending manner and would only tell me that, “it’s a process and they would call me when they know more.” I don’t know how long it takes to weigh a truck but I waited 6 days.
The day before the first day of our delivery window I finally called back for an update. The only information they could give me was that my delivery was delayed and wouldn’t be leaving California until the day before the end of my delivery window. So there was no way it would make it to Louisiana within the time frame originally communicated, which was a window of TEN DAYS!!! I’m a flight attendant and had requested the time of the delivery window off so that I could be present when our belongings arrived. Because the delivery was so delayed, I had to go back to work before it arrived and my husband was left to deal with it alone.
I finally received a call from Colonial giving me the final bill. It was nearly $400 more than estimated!! This was not due to weight, which would have been more acceptable, but rather a foreseeable issue relating to the truck itself. You see, they determined that the hired truck was too large to navigate my street and I needed to pay for a shuttle to complete the move. My delivery address never changed so why wasn’t I informed of this during the original estimate?!
Just before the scheduled delivery day I received a voice mail from the contracted moving company saying that I needed to provide them with my credit card information within the next 5 hours before they closed. Well I was hopping from one flight to the next and there was no way I could call them back. Thankfully, they got in touch with my husband. They told him that if he didn’t provide the credit card details within the next few hours, then they would demand CASH at delivery! How were we supposed to get cash on a weekend when we don’t even have a local bank yet?!!? Then they wanted him to email the credit card information, which he refused to do, as email is not a secure payment method. Anyway… we got them their money.
Delivery day comes and we have put cardboard and blankets down to protect our new, beautiful hardwood floors. It doesn’t work. There are large, deep scratches in our once gorgeous wood. Several items are damaged and our spirits are shattered. Furthermore, all of our items had been covered with an obnoxious green tape which proved impossible to remove. We still have bits of green tape on most of our belongings.
The bill of lading comes and it shows that the final weight of our items was EXACTLY the same as was estimated, down to the pound!!! Either the sales representative who estimated our weight is a bloody genius, or they didn’t even bother to weigh anything. I may never know. There was also a storage fee. When were our belongings stored!? They were late due to the delivery company, not us!!! I’ve never received an apology. The only thing I’ve received from the company is email after email asking for a review. Well here’s your review, Colonial. What now?

I had a friend who moved from California to Georgia about two years ago. I went to the website of the company she used and they didn't have anything about shipping and moving housing anymore. But they had a link to Colonial on the website. My dad found another company for me but when I called them to confirm some details, they couldn't answer all of my questions because I had a lot of questions. They were like, "You have to call this person and you have to call that person.” I questioned why they couldn't just tell me the information. I called Colonial and they answered all of my questions.
My biggest issue at the time was I didn't know exactly all that was in my storage unit. I was afraid that I would get quoted one thing and it would end up being way over the amount of what I had budgeted to spend. I gave the person I was speaking to at Colonial as much information as I could then I ask them what the process looked like if it was over that. They were able to get me all the information about what it would look like for it to be over that. That was the reason I end up going with Colonial. Also, going through the process was very easy.
The guys who came originally to pack up all my things did an amazing job packing everything up. They were so helpful. The estimate they gave me of what it would be over was a little bit overwhelming but after they did the actual estimation and when they got it down to Southern California, it was totally fine. The expectations were spot-on and the estimated amount over was actually cheaper than what I would've spent doing it myself of going with the other company. The people were very kind. I felt very stressed out and unprepared for the situation but they weren't. Everything went well and all my stuff came intact. Even the guys who delivered my stuff to my house were so cool. They were very interactive, engaging and helpful.
An almost stress-free move! So glad we could help Brittany :) Thank you!

Colonial Van Lines called me and I liked what they had to say. I liked their price and all of that. Everything that their coordinator told me was good and everybody seemed to know what they were doing. They were honest. The pick-up was good. But when they dropped my furniture off, they didn’t put my TV and a few other things back together that they took apart to start with. Other than that, it was all right. The driver of that truck was really nice and courteous. It was a good move and I got my money’s worth.
We were happy to help Mike! Thanks for choosing Colonial!
