I decided to change to TotalProtect because we had them before in another state and house and had no problems at all. Submitting a claim was really good and fast. They've just done the once or twice now. I haven't had to use it very often but we do when we need to and glad they're there.

First they sent someone out to replace the fan limit switch - that went well. My heat was up and running. The guy messed with some wires in the lower unit. I did not think too much of it until I went to use my air conditioner that summer. Now my blower keeps shutting off and my compressor keeps freezing up until it blows the breaker. I have had them out five times since. One time they charged me 75 dollars. Said it was my thermostat and they wouldn't fix it. I have been through five thermostats since then. The same problem. I have to keep my blower on manual override so my compressor don't freeze up.

My electric bill has gone up a hundred dollars every month. The last time they came out they charged 75 dollars and didn't even do anything. I requested a new company to be sent out. This guy said my heat exchanger was cracked. If he is about to replace what I think he is going to replace I don't see how that will fix my problem. On top of that they want me to pay 700 dollars for the repair.

Overall, HMS Home Warranty is a good company. Some of the contractors are slow to call you back. Plumbers don't have weekend hours, which is stupid. I needed a plumber twice and could not get any service. That's one thing that really needs to change about the company because things happen 24/7. Plumbers usually make a lot of extra money on the weekends. And it makes you not want to renew. But I renewed for the fourth time this year since HMS does what it says it's going to do. But little things matter a lot to a consumer who's paying for the service. They don't want to have to wait extended period of time to be serviced.

HMS has gone in with the home purchase though they were the name that stuck out in my mind since I used to be a realtor and I've dealt with their reps before. Their reps are very friendly. She knew my name and we've talked nothing so much in particular. I only sold one house in the six months I was realtor and I don't think the buyer or the seller were interested in a home warranty, but I had full support from them as a vendor. On the other hand, my interaction with their technician went well. The only drawback was the length of time it took to get the part. I'd file the claim online and I had an email back within minutes with the claim number and the vendor's number to call, and had an appointment scheduled for that Friday but it took a week and a half for the part to come in. The washer works fine now and overall, it was a quick and very easy experience with HMS.

They came and looked at the back of the fridge then they took out much of my deductible although they didn't do anything. I didn't like that and TotalProtect should not give them to other customers because they didn't fix my refrigerator. It was bad and the one who really fixed my fridge was M-Y Appliance. They're good and honest people and they explain what's going on. Overall, TotalProtect is fine.

Our air conditioning upstairs went out so I followed the procedure outlined in my home warranty. I called it in and had a guy come out and look at it. He said that he had to order a part and it would take three to five days and that he would call me back after. Having no air conditioner in the summertime is a problem, and it's especially stressful with a 20-month-old baby sleeping on a mattress on the floor downstairs because that's where the only working AC is.

With no call on the third day, I called the contractor several times from Wednesday to Friday, but there was no return call until Monday morning. He told me he was waiting to hear back from HMS Home Warranty to go ahead, come out and do the work. I told him he should have told me that five days ago. I called HMS and the lady I spoke with told me, "We’re waiting to get confirmation from you regarding some charges on there that weren’t covered under your warranty.”

I said, “What do you mean you’re waiting for confirmation from me? How was I supposed to give you my confirmation? I didn’t even know I was supposed to call you.” I told her I didn't receive any phone call or email regarding that matter. Then she proceeded to tell me, "If it was me, I would’ve been a little more proactive and called them to find out what’s going on." And then I told her, “I’m a little confused. Are you telling me that I should have called you to make sure you’re doing a good job?” She said, "The ball was dropped and we’re sorry...we’re understaffed and everybody’s trying the best his best. In the future, it would help to call in and follow up.”

So I went two weeks without air conditioning because someone didn’t even bother to give me a phone call to let me know that I needed to confirm some charges and we’re okay to go ahead and move forward. I asked to speak with her supervisor but none was available. The AC's fixed now and everything's okay, but that was the worst customer service experience I have ever experienced.

Their claim-submitting process is pretty easy. Although the first tech who came out couldn’t fix my unit, but HMS was able to send somebody out again later on that figured out what the problem was. Also, I had a misunderstanding because I had 2 AC units and the paperwork said it covered both of the units, but HMS told me they only cover for one. So the sales rep did research, called somebody else, and placed me on hold. She didn't know the answer but she found it and that was a key importance for me. I’m happy with the service, but they should have been more explicit concerning the units because even when talking with the person I bought the house from, they were under the same impression also and that's why they listed it in the closing papers.

All is well with TotalProtect, submitting a claim is an easy process, but finding the right person that will respond is the big deal. We've had two kinds of contractors that have come out with our air conditioning. One wanted to do one thing and the other came along and said, "Well, this was done the wrong way." But we think is the unit is undersized, they just haven't figured that out yet. So we're kind of disappointed in that. But in terms of the time and estimate they do, we're totally happy.

We were selling our house, and a real estate agent suggested that adding a home warranty coverage would help in selling it. We didn't know anything about home warranty providers, but she recommended HMS Home Warranty, and we decided to go with them. When we finally moved to Kentucky, HMS was also offered there, so we decided to renew. So far, we've called them for a couple of plumbing issues, and they sent somebody who took care of the problems. However, one thing we are a little concerned about, is our air conditioner. We've called about it a couple of times, and the people that came did little things that fixed it for a while, and then it breaks again. So now, I don't know if it's the repair person's fault, or if it's time for our air conditioner to completely die since it is kind of old. Other than that, HMS has been very good, and I am happy with them.

We like TotalProtect a lot because they’re good. But the last experience we’ve had has been pretty bad. It was our pool and they hired one company to do it and had to wait five weeks but they never fixed it. Then they called me up and asked about it and I said, “The guy never came.” So then she did a three-way call and the guy goes, “Well, they just have a filter and they can just wait.” And I said, “Really? It’s not a filter. It’s the infiltration cleaning system.” He thought that’s what it was and it wasn’t. Our pool wasn’t being able to self-clean itself like it’s supposed to.

It was fail pool service. Just because we live in the county doesn’t mean somebody can’t drive. I go from my house to where I work at 22 miles one way every day and it wouldn’t have killed the pool service to drive here. We have extended warranty on our pool so it covers all the moving parts. And they don't need to have a 60-day window where they pay third-party check. They should just pay directly and not have to make the companies wait, otherwise we could have gotten other pool companies around us to come out and fix our pool immediately which can go that day. They need to come up to the times as it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to pay somebody something nowadays and we have so much technology.

Then they had to go hire some man. He came over and we already told him everything ahead of time so he knew what he needed. He goes, “Well, I still have to come look at it.” I go, “I understand that, but can you bring the new part so that we don’t have to wait any longer?” So then the guy said, “Well, I think I can take this home and fix it.” “Really? Oh my dear God. Just get it fixed.” Then I said, “We gave you the part. We told you where it was at. We should have just gone out and did it ourselves and sent the company a bill.”

Then my microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, and dryer all went out at the same time. The microwave caught on fire and so when the guy goes, “Do I have to turn it on?” I said, “You’re not turning that thing on. I’m telling you it -- look, open it up and see the black smoke. You’re not catching my house on fire.” So they took that out and we got a new one because it wasn’t a fixable thing. They got the dishwasher fixed but not the refrigerator. The freezer part goes into defrost mode and come back on and then go into defrost mode again. It’s not supposed to keep going like that. Then it took them almost two months to fix our dryer. They were all very frustrating things to do. But I have to say the technicians were very nice, were very respectable and did their job like they were supposed to. I’d recommend it to a friend even though we had this horrible experience because we’ve had them all these years.

HMS is also quick to pay out. With our first claim, they couldn't find anyone within the network so we had to pay out of our pocket, but they were quick to reimburse - about four weeks. The only thing I hope for them to improve on would be on the wait time on the telephone when you're calling, doing follow-ups or getting information. A lot of times, I've waited up to 40 minutes. When they called in the repair cost to HMS they were told their parts were too expensive and they would not be able to do the repair. HMS requested 24-48 hours to "research" where to find less expensive parts. In the meantime, it's approaching 90 degrees, I had to take the morning off work and the service technician will have to make a 2nd call once the cheaper parts are delivered -- what is the cost of that? Why did HMS connect us with a repair company in which they were not willing to pay? Customer service just told us "There was nothing we could do." So a repair that could have been done in an hour will now not be done for up to 48 hours. Very disappointed.

Submitting a claim for HMS warranty was easy because it is generic. You go in there, you fill it out and a day later, they contact you. The one thing I don't like is I’m challenging a claim right now and I’ve had multiple people call me for that same issue because there’s no communication within HMS so I’ve had to talk to multiple people about the same claim even though it's on my file and on my notes. They just have to read it.

And a couple of months ago we put in a claim because we had a leak in our attic out of the air conditioning unit. My wife told the tech what the problem was and he wouldn’t listen to her. So he then went back to the unit but the issue is in the attic, not outside. He goes up there and then he blamed it on us and then we were like, “We just bought this house.” He diagnosed it without actually looking at it and figuring out what was wrong with it. He also left a mess in my attic of stuff he cut off. Then the problem that he had to fix started leaking again because the parts he used were "cheap" according to the other HVAC guy they sent out. That first company was a joke and very unprofessional.

The second HVAC contractor was the one who fixed the first one's issue. They were awesome - GPS HVAC. They showed up early, listened, analyzed and then diagnosed and fixed the problem. They were very professional, outstanding people. So I highly recommend those people. Overall, the process was easy. HMS is not bad.

The guy came and didn't do anything. I called the CS office at Total Protect and had another company come out which was the same company that RED TAGED my Furnace a few years back. I have a RUUD that was installed back in 1977 or so, and Total Protect is replacing only the Coil in the Air Conditioning Unit and is Replacing my Furnace Now. So, I have to pay another deductible of $335.00. With saving energy, and being environmentally friendly, I would think that after 3 or 4 years at $49.95 a month, you would have replaced the entire unit with equivalent. I am getting a Goodman with a 10 year warranty and not a RUUD that lasted almost 38 years. Because my coil and furnace is being replaced with a energy rating below what is recommended, here continues my high energy bills. Today, is August 30, 2015 and no work has been performed at my home. I could have purchased a new unit inside and out for the amout of money I have spent.

I've had some problems with TotalProtect. As a matter of fact, I've thought a few times about switching to another company. I don't like that you never get to talk to a live person with TotalProtect's recorded version of submitting a claim and a lot of times, you don't get a confirmation number or a case number to follow up. Also in many cases, they don't give the contractor's phone number so you can stay in touch with them. In addition, most of the contractors they sent have been Sears and they've been good but the others are not thorough enough. For instance, the plumbers were good but the air conditioning people leave a lot to be desired.

I was fine with TotalProtect but I wasn't too happy with the service man. When he came out the first time, he told me what was wrong, ordered a part, and had it delivered to me. I made a special trip to FedEx to get the part when I got off work because the part was going to come the day before he was to come and there was nobody home during the day.

The service man told me I would be his first customer that morning and it would be between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. when he got there. By about 9:30 a.m., he still had not arrived. I finally called TotalProtect and they got in touch with him. He called me back immediately and asked me if I had the part. I said, "Yeah, I made a special trip to go get the part, so it would be here when you come this morning." He said, "Well, I'll come right now then." So my question is, if he could leave and come right then, what was he doing between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. that he was not there on time?

The realtor we were dealing with told us that HMS Home Warranty was very good company, that people have been really satisfied with them and was a good deal for the money, so we decided to have them as our warranty provider as well. They're pretty good, and the only problem we had with them was when we had a water-heater go out, and the person they had us call didn't even install water heaters. When we finally got the right person, I had given him wrong information about the type of water heater we had, so he had to go get a different one, and everything was taken care of really well. I wasn't able to be there for the install, but when we finally got a hold of each other, he was really decent about everything, and didn’t complain at all.

Other than the issue with the wrong information they gave me, I am happy with HMS, and getting their services definitely paid for itself. In fact, the buyer of the house wanted a home warranty and we already had it in place. So that was great.

A technician came to my house made a diagnosis and left. He said he was going to order the part and be back Saturday August 22nd; my son forgot to ask of what year. Not once TP or the vendor were able to provide an ETA about anything. I dont understand why they cant track the part in this day and age when I can track a letter and they post all the information on the web. Maybe they used Pony Express. My Dog is in a friends house she couldnt handle the heat. As of today, August 26th, we are all clueless as to why we havent even received an ETA on the work that needs to be done or even when the part is to arrive. Again anything can be track nowadays.

So now I talk to a representative about what's going on first before doing it online as I want to make sure the services were covered. Other than that, the technicians have been great and they let us know what's wrong and what they're going to do. They're usually on time. I have been without hot water for 49 days and counting due to poor service and incompetent service partners. On 5 July I contacted HMS Home Warranty regarding my water heater, which was making a terrible noise. As of 22 August, they have yet to provide the part that will resolve the issue. On 6 July they sent a technician who was not qualified to work on the water heater, but told me that he believed it was emitting carbon monoxide. I called the gas company who came promptly, confirmed it was carbon monoxide, and turned off the gas to the water heater. This took a full day, during which I was unable to go to work.

HMS was unable to send another technician to look at the water heater for two to three days. Finally, they assigned the repair to Stellar HVAC. Stellar HVAC agreed to come in the early afternoon, but did not arrive until later in the evening, causing my significant other to give up a day of work while waiting. Stellar HVAC dismantled the water heater's motor, confirmed that was the problem and contacted HMS to order a replacement part. I called Stellar HVAC approximately one week later, and they claimed they had only just received the part, although HMS said it had been available for days.

Per communication with Stellar HVAC, I left work early to meet them at my home on a Monday evening, but when I called after waiting for them to arrive they said they'd need to postpone till the same time the next day. Again, I left work early, waited, and called only to be told they had never agreed to come that day, but would come Thursday between 8 and 10am. I took off work again to wait for them to arrive. When I called at 10:00 they said they were picking up the part and would be there in an hour. They did not respond to my phone calls at 11:00 or any additional phone calls until 3:30 in the afternoon. During this time I spoke with HMS who advised if I did not hear from Stellar by 4:00 they would see what they could do.

At 3:30 Stellar said they'd come by that evening, however they never arrived and did not answer any of my phone calls or any phone calls from HMS. At this point I had been without hot water for 3 weeks. HMS agreed to reassign the problem to a new service provider, Rose Plumbing, but they would need to start from the beginning. A technician came and said that I needed a new water heater. (My significant other took time off from work for this visit.) A second technician came to measure for a new water heater. (I took time off from work for this.) After a week, I called for an update and they said that they actually needed to order a part.

After another few days I called HMS who first attempted to schedule Stellar HVAC to complete the repair. When I reminded them of the past problems with Stellar HVAC, HMS looked at the records again and said that they had only received the order from Rose Plumbing the day before. On Monday, 17 August HMS said that the part had been ordered, but when I spoke with Rose Plumbing on Thursday the 20th they were unaware of anything being ordered. When I spoke with HMS on Saturday the 22nd they first believed that Stellar HVAC was responsible so I had to explain again the past interaction.

HMS then said that the part should have been delivered, and left a message for Rose Plumbing to contact me. I have not had hot water for 49 days. Each time I talk with HMS they try to redirect me to Stellar HVAC, despite their track record of unreliability, and I have to explain the whole saga again. They also make claims that appear intended to placate rather than solve the problem. This company fails at case management and they select incompetent partners. A home warranty is a great idea, but not with HMS.

However we've had continuing problems with an air conditioning unit. The repairs' just putting a bandaid on the situation all the time but it's not efficient. It needs to be changed. By the time we spend all these $75 on having it worked on, might as well just buy one. It's not taking care of the problems. When there's trouble with major appliances, there's always room for fixing it and it's got a lot more years to go. But people get home warranties for that reason so that they can have it baby sat for a while and kept running for a bit. But at some point... it’s not a good thing.

I live in Leavenworth. WA, which is over a huge rage of mountains with only two mountain passes between us and Seattle, WA,(which is about 150 miles away) and all other coastal communities. Fortunately I live in a fairly new home, built in 2007. When my first Home Warranty ran out I picked Total Protect in 2012 to replace it. They had a reasonable rate, and a good reputation. I continued with them until I cancelled our contract in August of 2015. Why, because they actually could not service this area. I lost my AC during a heat wave of over 100 degrees. I am 85 years old, and the heat was unhealthy to say the least. When I called their service department I was told they had a serviceman in Everett, WA (over 100 miles away), and he would get to me within a week! This was unacceptable. So, I called a local serviceman, that installed my unit, and had him come out. I asked if he'd call Total Protect, and he replied that his company would not deal with them, & you probably won't find a company on this side of the mountain who would. I was frustrated, so I called Total Protect & asked what I had to do to get my AC unit repaired. They replied that I had to either use the repairman they would send out, or pay for it myself. So I did, and the final cost was over seven thousand dollars. Why because, i chose (as a homeowner) to get a new unit at $7,000 with a TEN YEAR warranty, over a $3,000 repair with a one year warranty! Knowing that Total Protect really didn't cover me! My beef with Total Protect, is they issued a policy that they should have known they couldn't provide reasonable service too. Other companies admitted, when I called, that they didn't cover Chelan County, WA. Total Protect said they could. Oh, they can, if they can find someone on their list, who will drive over the mountain. Than their are times when the Pass is closed, and no one can get over it! My new company not only can respond, they gave me a list of local companies, they have contracts, who will immediately respond to my needs. I'm upset that I paid them for several years, not knowing that I really wasn't covered. Oh, they admit that I never filed a claim, I couldn't, because under the rules of the contract, you MUST get their approval first, & get a claim number, before a claim will be accepted. I sent the big on right to their CAO, who didn't even take the time to reply. Even than, I was only asking for the $3,000 estimate repair bill, & not the actual cost of replacing the unit. For the record, :"I am disappointed that Total Protect lied to me, & took my money for three years, knowing they could not cover my area for service, in a reasonable length of time. My warning to others, is to make sure the company you pick, can give you the names of some of your local service facilities, before you contract with them."

(which was incorrect due to pictures that were taken and attached to this review on a second inspection that I paid for). He told me straight out that the company would not cover RUST/Corrosion and that he would have to submit to Total Protect for approval TO SEE if the repair will be done. I asked him why wouldn't they fix it... and he mention that the condenser coil HOUSING was rusted on some areas and that they don't cover RUST. I said that it didn't make since because the old condenser coil housings were made out of steel/metal and that being exposed to the continuous humidity from normal condensation (wear and tear) and leaking freon it would eventually form corrosion on the metal/steel parts. Well... Long story short, my claim was denied. I spoke with a supervisor and she told me straight out the same thing and I explained to her that I've been 4 years with Total Protect and also explained that the leaks were at the coil not where the rust was, and had pictures to prove it but still denied. I ask to dispute and she said it could take 4 - 6 weeks for this. How am I suppose to be with out AC for 4 - 6 week under 100 F weather here in Texas. So I told her that I wanted to cancel my service and she didn't care one bit, just told me go ahead.... So I paid $1,400 to replace the condenser coil(with a new Aluminum condenser coil) on my side with my technician so my kids and I would have a livable home and found me other home warranty companies that do cover normal wear and tear and rust and corrosion. I will actually have to call and cancel at the end of the month since Total Protect had already charged my credit card for the month.
I took a lot of pictures of the condenser coil that was replaced and even where the leaks occurred , which are very visible with the naked eye, just in case I decided to dispute this claim, but thinking things over I couldn't wait 4-6 weeks to get this fix due to the heat and humidity inside my house. I will hold on to the picture to see if they even care of calling me for them so they can see for them selves that what their technician reported was incorrect. The technician that I hired called this normal wear and tear and that the 2-3 leaks were ALL on the coil and the pictures prove this since the shinny oil/freon leak is very visible on th pictures and no leaks the corrode parts. This particular company will do whatever it takes not to cover expensive repairs PEROID.

I recommend researching around other home warranty companies cheaper and with more coverage and better ratings.

The last claim we had with HMS for our air conditioner has been open for two months and still not closed. The company that they've gone through was not supporting the paperwork. I called them yesterday to see if they had filed the paperwork from a month ago when they came out to measure what they needed to replace. The lady said she tried to call HMS three times and they weren't answering. I called HMS and got right through so the contractor was lying on top of everything. They came out though and replaced the AC after we've had it repaired four times through HMS but there's another part that they have to replace so it's still not working. I'm having $500 electric bills because of it.

My problem with HMS is they're the ones that picked and support this company. I've dealt with them before when we had problems with the first unit when we first moved in and it's always been the same thing with the company. HMS is not following through with making sure it's getting done. The guy who is coming out has been fine but I'm generally pissed off.

TotalProtect is a good program, I like them. Home warranty sounded like a good deal to me, gives me peace of mind. I chose them because it's a courtesy that's been shown to me throughout the years. Submitting a claim is fairly easy, interactions with the claims representative went good. However, this last time my air conditioner went out, it took us a few more days than usual to get someone to come work on it. Three days after I had placed the claim, I hadn’t heard anything. When I called about the claim, it has been sent in and all. That very same day, I got a phone call saying who would come to fix it. As for the technician that came, he did a very good job. I feel good about the quality of his work and everything's been running smoothly.

When I submitted a claim, the contractor they sent was a pleasant guy who knew what he was doing and did a good job. So I would recommend TotalProtect. It's cheaper than trying to get a warranty on each appliance like through Sears, for example -- it's cheaper and a better investment.

I have been with TotalProtect for 6-7 years, and my experience so far this year is not very good. Submitting a claim was fine but the technicians sent weren't good. I had two people come out on my air conditioner and it's still not working properly. One of them (he works for an air conditioner company) came out and supposedly fixed my air conditioner. It didn't work, it's still doing what it was doing.

I called again and he came back on an existing claim. He put a thermostat on the wall, and he tried to get more money from me. When he put the thermostat on the wall, he had left a hole where the wires came out, which wasn't there before he started. He left and came back and said he'd call me and let me know if I needed to give him more money. He did poor work, and today my air conditioner still isn't fixed. I wrote them a letter and called them, but I haven't heard from them. I don't know what else I'm going to do. The last claim I submitted to HMS Home Warranty was fine, but before that I was close to taking them all to court. They didn’t do what they were supposed to do and nothing happened the way it was supposed to happen. It may have been the fact that the way their documents are written were misleading and so it ended up with having their people try to do arbitration with me, and we finally got it solved, but it took forever to get it done and I had to pay double fee, $65 twice or three times but things were not being completed and I still have a bad taste in my mouth about the company. Their quality of work was badly done and a newborn child could’ve done better. The companies that they used were worthless.

However the last time when they started using good companies such as Sears-Roebuck repair services and their contractors, things changed considerably and that helped a lot by using quality services. A young man who lives down in Fellsmere, Florida down about 30 miles from us handled me very well. He was a very nice young man and he knew what he was doing and he had very good people skills, so a lot of the quality work has to do with changing who they send to do work. I am on a reasonably level terms with them at this point, so it’s good and I’d recommend them right now. Five months ago however, I would’ve never recommended them to anyone.

On 07.13.15 I contacted Total Protect regarding my AC, it was not running outside or cooler inside. I received an email the same day advising to contact ETC Heating & Air Conditioning to arrange for a tech to come out, which I did. They were to come out the next day. On 07.13.15 I received a call from ETC advising that their tech called in and they only have one tech. ETC contacted Total Protect to advise the same and a rep from Total Protect called me with their Best theyve Got alternate company, Back 2 Basic HVAC. The tech showed up at 1:30 p.m., checked the AC, added Freon and left after paying the $75.00 fee. 10 minutes later the AC froze up again, I called Back 2 Basic HVAC back and the tech came back out. After 10 minutes outside he advised the condenser was bad and the unit would need replacing. He advised he would send a quote to Total Protect and Total Protect would contact me. The temperatures were 90-95 degrees with a heat index of 100 to 105 degrees that week and I had purchased a stationary AC to cool the living room in my townhome. After a couple of days I contacted an HVAC company to come out and look at the AC and provide a recommendation. They assessed that the unit would need replacing and provided me with a quote of $4000.00 to replace the entire system. I advised them to replace it. After a week went by I contacted Total Protect to find out what was going on with my claim since no ever contacted me. I advised them of what happened with their service techs, the fact that no one ever contacted me from Total Protect and that their service was unacceptable after being a loyal customer for 12 years. All I heard was how sorry they were that no one ever contacted me they wanted to send out the tech who didnt complete the first report to look at the AC againReally??? I advised that I had already replaced the unit and wanted to know if Total Protect would refund any part of my money I had to put out of pocket due to their negligence. I was advised that they could review what was done but since their tech never submitted his findings they had little to go on, but it would be worth a try. I cancelled my policy with them after 12 years. In a 12 year period I may have called them twice prior to this. I wouldnt recommend Total Protect to anyone, they are great if you dont need them, but when you do, not so much.

Every time I called them, their rep were very friendly, courteous, helpful, and prompt. They are concerned towards whatever problems I've had. They understand that even a minor problem can be a big thing. That's one of the big reason that I've stayed with them. Also, the repair people they sent out were very professional, knowledgeable and always on time. They always explained everything that they needed to do and the reason behind it. They made suggestions on how it couldn't happen again or something that might make it easier for everybody.

So, even though the last service I had with them was last winter and even if I don't have anything, I am going to stay with TotalProtect. With TotalProtect, I have a peace of mind knowing that couple of years down the road, I might going to have any major expense to come out. I also don't have to worry about trying to find a professional to come out and take care of a problem for me. They do all of that. However, I wish it was a little cheaper but it's still good for what they do. So, I'm going to stay with TotalProtect as long as they'll have me. I have also recommended TotalProtect to a friend. The technicians sent by HMS to our home were okay. The first time we had to go through with them had to do with my washing machine. The fellow that came did not come the day he was supposed to come. I called HMS and they got a hold of him right away. The story was that he had gotten us confused with another customer, which could have happened. He said he would be there the next day without fail. The very next day, I guess somebody that works with him called to see if they could reschedule the appointment and rearrange it. I said " Absolutely not. You all were supposed to be here the previous day. Whoever the repair person was, he was assured me that they would be here." So they did.

However, with that particular claim, we had to wait for a particular part that never really came. We probably went close to a month without having a washing machine. It was not an American made washing machine and so I can understand having difficulty getting the part. But once I called the rep they called me afterward. They couldn't have been any nicer. The rep I talked to on a Thursday assured me they were looking for the part. She said "Give me until the weekend and I will call you. I will definitely call you Monday" which she did. She said they couldn't find the part so she would get the authorization for us to get a new washer, and they paid for a new washing machine for us.

We had another claim and the fellow that came out was very nice. He corrected the problem. We had some Freon put in our upstairs air conditioner and I was pleased with the outcome. The second case was just funny because the technician who came asked me to go upstairs to turn the air conditioner on and off. I thought it was funny because some people would not have the homeowner to do that. He probably needed to have somebody to do it. It was a very hot day so I didn't mind doing that and the outcome was also good.

We've had really good luck with these warranty companies every time we've had to call them. But I am very much aware that sometimes the technicians they get are sometimes people or companies that are trying to build their business. So you may not have the most prominent company in the area doing the work, but that doesn't mean they are not qualified.

Strange since the previous repair was 2 years prior and the unit was working fine. The previous contractor came out and fixed it. However, after the "fix" the unit was vibrating to the point it was cracking the housing.

I called in again and was assigned a different contractor. This guy wouldn't make an appointment and would just keep saying, "I'll come out tomorrow." After over a week of this I called back and was reassigned back to the previous contractor. When we first moved here, we had another warranty service. I started looking online and saw TotalProtect, and then I saw TotalProtect Gold which I liked because it has the four quarterly visits. I liked the way their programs are setup. If the air conditioner or one of my appliances goes bad, I'm only responsible for $60 if it has to be replaced. Lately, when we have air conditioner problems, the company was from my hometown, Akron, which is good, they have been outstanding. The last several times, I've had outstanding work. The guys know what they're doing.

When I call and they come out, everybody's helpful. After they ask the information they need, they give me a phone number and say that either they'll contact me or I have to call them which is easier. Some of the warranty services, like the heating/air conditioner, they're only open until about 4:30. So the next morning that we call, they'll call me back the next morning and give me a time when they can come out to the house. This last time, because of the weather being so weird this year due to the high volume of heat we had here, they told me I was going to have to wait a minimum of three days. The representative said if she gets one soon, she would call me back. But instead of three days, it was just a day.

I liked their service compared to the other ones. Most of the other ones don't have the quarterly visit. If you find something and let them know, you can get it taken care of now or within a couple of weeks, depending if you're ready to have it done. I like that it is a preventative service and I wish they all had the quarterly visit which they don't always do.

It's a good idea to have a home warranty if you've got a decent house, which we have. We've got a nice house and even though it's 14 years old now, for us it's like new because we're old people. So we decided to acquire TotalProtect home warranty. The price didn't sound that bad, although it was a little high. But I said, "If something goes bad, we're going to be glad we did."

I've had three claims: One on my air conditioner, one on my washing machine, and one on the garbage disposal. Those are the only three claims that I've had to pay a $75 co-pay. And then, the last time I had one of those annual inspections on my appliances, they discovered that I had a bad thermostat in the oven on our Whirlpool range. That's what I'm trying to get a settlement on now, and I haven't got it yet. I have replaced the range and they told me they're going to pay me a certain amount for replacing it. I wasn't real happy with that because the replacement was not as good a quality range as what we originally had. According to the owner's manual, the one we were told that we had to take as a replacement didn't have warmer burner and it didn't have two or three other features that our old range had.

I called the second time regarding this about a month ago. I was told that we had a certain model of GE range before and Whirlpool Gold is the one that we have in our kitchen now. The lady that I spoke with said we're allowed $532 or $534 to replace it and we could get what we wanted. So we went to Famous Tate, an appliance store right here in Brandon, Florida. My wife happens to know the salesman there real well. He looked at what we had and they had a special deal, a Fourth of July sale that was still on even though it was a week past. We bought this on the 13th of July and got it delivered on the 15th. So we've had it here now for three or four weeks.

We were told when we emailed the receipt, that it would take up to six weeks to get the things settled and paid for. We went ahead and bought it and paid for it ourselves since we were told they'd allow us some amount for a replacement range. The one we got is almost exactly the one that we replaced, only it's a GE instead of a Whirlpool, and it was actually on sale right then so we got it for $695 although its retail price is a couple of $300 more. TotalProtect did not do quite what they said they were going to as far as replacing our stove with an equivalent unit. But the other three times that I paid the $75 co-pay, they repaired something, and every time, it came out perfect, so I'm not totally unhappy with the company.

I have recommended TotalProtect to several people, in fact, because I thought everything was fine and that it's a good idea to have this kind of protection. According to the contract, there's a maximum limit of $50,000 coverage that you're allowed in your lifetime, but at my age I might not use that much. I would recommend them because I noticed several other companies have this kind of coverage policies but I haven't seen another one that compared to it really, and that's in their favor, and they'd given me good service every time I've called. My problem is remembering to call for my annual service check-up when I need it. At the end of this month, I'll be eligible for another one and I'll probably have the electrical done if I'm eligible for that.

I always tell people that I have HMS Home Warranty and how wonderful it is. My realtor insisted I get it when I bought the house, and I've been delighted that I've had it. They're always great. The people that come out here to work have always been very good at what they do. I've had all sorts of things I had to get repaired before I met HMS, and having it is just so much nicer than trying to do it the other way.

Having a home warranty would be cheaper and more convenient than paying out of pocket so I decided to get one. I went with TotalProtect and their claims reps are nice, friendly, very professional, and knew what they were doing. However, one of my claims was and still is a nightmare because of their vendor, A-Total Plumbing. To start with there was something wrong with the plumber that they sent because he told me he had anger issues and he was really weird. I was so scared of him.

What happened was I had a PRV go on me and this plumber from A-Total could've went to the Home Depot or a plumbing supply company and got that PRV, but he left that situation for five days. I even called TotalProtect to call A-Total to see if they would come out and fix the situation. The latter refused, saying they were waiting for a part. When they finally installed that PRV, I called another plumber (Donald) that I paid for myself to come down and check it. He told me it was a cheap valve, about $90, when a good valve costs $300. He gave me a written document and I sent it the vendor company. I will still have Donald come and change out the valve to a good one. This issue is still ongoing.

Another issue with A-Total was with our tub and shower valve. They changed out the part but there's a little pocket they left off apart of the valve. So I had to call another plumbing company. They had to put that plastic valve back on the shower and tub valve and reinstall it. A-Total messed everything up. I didn't dare use the water heater because I was afraid it was damaged (they left it for five days, too), so I ended up spending $700 changing out the water heater from Lowe's, who did the installation as well. Now, I have a beautiful hot water heater and I don't have to worry about being blown to bits.

A-Total customer service is lousy and their work is sloppy, too. They’re sharing other people’s information. For instance, they sent me some paperwork with a page that has another person's information on it, and on the back side, they had copies of my receipts. I would never recommend A-Total to anybody and if you check about them on Better Business Bureau, they have lots negative complaints. I even called TotalProtect and told them not to send A-Total to my house anymore because if they do, I'll have them arrested. TotalProtect should get rid of them.

On the other hand, the claim where Sears fixed my refrigerator was a beautiful experience. They gave me a printout and broke everything down on it - the cost and labor. They also did a wonderful job on the air conditioning issue that I had. I love Sears. So TotalProtect had a bad vendor but based on overall experience I would still recommend them.

When we purchased our new home the previous owners provided us with a warranty through HMS Home Warranty. It has proven to have been a huge waste of money. At the beginning of summer we turned our air conditioner on for the first time and it was not working properly. HMS set up a company to come out to evaluate and they never showed up or called. I contacted the company directly the following day and they told me that I would have to pay $175 out of pocket over my deductible because it was now Friday and they charge a weekend rate. I called HMS to get a different company and the earliest they could have someone come out was Tuesday of the following week.

After multiple phone calls they upgraded my claim to emergency service and authorized a company of my choice to come out. They just had to call themselves to get authorization, and of course when they called they were denied. Several more hours on the phone and even longer waiting for a non-existent supervisor to call me back and I still had no AC. 3 months later I'm still disputing the claim. Phone calls and emails go unreturned and customer service provides incorrect information. I have wasted so much time, energy, and money. I would avoid this company.

HMS told me a certain brand would be put in, and that also the thermostat needed to be replaced, and all would be taken care of when they brought the unit out. But the contractor never brought the thermostat and the one they brought was a subsidiary of the brand I was going to get, and I expected to get the brand name, not one of their lesser models.

I might have paid them additional if I had known, and had gotten a better grade since I had gone online after this was put in and it was not rated nearly as well as the brand name that the company makes. The last time they were out here was this winter over my furnace and they were saying that one of the coils needed to be cleaned. But the coil was just put in not too long before that so I didn’t think it should be to that extreme as they described. I just don't feel comfortable with them, so I doubt it that I’d recommend that contractor company to a friend. But as for HMS, I’d recommend them.

She told me that she would call three different companies and get back with me. Within an hour, she called back and told me there was a technician en route. Somebody could have just said, "Sorry. The next person I can have come out is a week from now or two days from now." But she went above and beyond and called several people until she got somebody out here that same day, which is remarkable in my book. I originally thought it was going to be several thousand dollars to repair because the door looked totally broken, but the technician said, "I can fix this, save you a lot of money. I've been doing this for 15, 20 years." And he left the door fixed like nothing ever happened. It was great!

AVOID THIS COMPANY!! I made my claims SEVERAL weeks ago and I'm STILL waiting to get them handled. Our dishwasher was deemed not fixable by the appliance company, and HMS is saying they will NOT replace it. Nor have they offered any amount of credit for me to replace myself. Phone calls go unanswered, emails get no response, and the customer service is worse than I get at fast food drive thru's. Hands down the WORST customer service rep I've dealt with is Patricia **. God help you if your claims get stuck with this woman. I was explaining to her how critical it is for me to get my dishwasher working ASAP, as my son has a feeding tube and his equipment is very difficult to clean by hand and the sanitize feature is my best friend. Her response, "You can't boil them on the cooktop?". That's an EXACT quote. My answer to her was an emphatic "NO, I cannot!!!".

She has made it blatantly clear that my satisfaction with this company is of no concern to her. How a company can employ a person with NO people skills and NO regard for the people who pay them is beyond me. If this is the type of people they employ on the regular, I'm shocked this company is still in business. Hear me... AVOID THIS COMPANY!!!

Submitting a claim with HMS Home warranty is generally an easy process, although my latest claim did no go as smoothly as usual. I didn’t have any problem reaching HMS. The problem came with the vendors. I had an air conditioning problem when the temperature was 100 degrees, so I called HMS about it and they gave me the name of the vendor to call. I called that vendor and they didn’t call me back. I phoned HMS back and the girl that I spoke with put me on hold and called another vendor, came back on the line and gave me a date that they said they could come. When the date rolled around, no one showed up. I called the vendor and they said my appointment was on the following day. In short, it took almost a week to get anything done, and when the guy came, he was in and out here in less than an hour and had the problem fixed.

I don’t think HMS has enough vendors to choose from and having one or two air conditioning companies is probably not enough. I understand that probably all the air conditioning companies were busy and it could have been circumstantial in that it was a heat wave going on but that doesn’t help me when it’s 96 degrees downstairs and over 100 upstairs for days on end. HMS is a good service to have, and it’s definitely a money saver when something big goes wrong, but this is the first time that I’ve had a frustrating experience from them.

My garbage disposal was leaking and my son replaced it in feb or March 2015. After using it for a few days ,I noticed that my belonging under the sink were wet. When I was about to call a plumber, I realized I had a home warranty Insurance. At this time , I contacted my insurance since it was the 1st time using them, so after a couple of days a tech from Allright Mechanical came out to repair the garbage disposal. He said it was a minor problem, and he fixed it and said I wouldn't have anymore problem with the garbage disposal. On the morning of the 30th I decided to use the disposal and noticed a puddle of water on the floor. I immediately open the doors to the sink and noticed the water coming from the disposal worst than ever, as it wet the rug in front of the doors. I immediately called for the technician to come back and fix this problem that he had claimed was fixed; then I called my insurance and told them the tech did not fix the garbage disposal. About 25 minutes late, I missed a call from Chris with Total Protect, but tried to call him back, but another party said that my claim was invalid because my son had originally installled the disposal improperly. This is asinine! Since when you can't attempt to fix something in your home without being penalized! Nonetheless, the tech will not return to fix the problem, which he deemed was repaired and yet, I have a leaky garbage disposaL after giving TotalProtect more than $300.00 and paying my service fee of $100.00. Where is justice here, I ask? I hope the Co. will rectify this problem soon or we will take it to another level, which I hope won't be necessary. What good is insurance if it doesn't deliver? I hope no one else has to go through what I am feeling now. Currently, I am very angry and cannot sit and watch that water destroy my cabinet, so I may have to contact another plumber and if it resort to that, the I may as well cancel this so-called insurance.

The billing is also really easy. We first used HMS for our refrigerator when the duckbill on its bottom was causing it to leak. Now, we had someone today who replaced the sump pump. The technician was kind, courteous, nice, and basically changed out the duckbill and no more problem. Unfortunately, he loosened some of the fittings on the water back up when he was knocking around with the sump pump. He wasn't allowed to touch and fix that so now, I have to call a different plumber out. That's not good but I expect it will be okay.

We've had HMS since we purchased our home 15 years ago. My experience submitting claims over the phone has been great and for the most part the vendors they send out haven’t been bad (our heat and A/C guy was very good) but some of them I wouldn’t have as a part of my HMS system if I had to choose them. One in particular disturbed me because he brought in a manual as if he didn't know what he was doing as he was trying to repair our washer. To me, that’s not an impression you want to give your customer, that you’re not sure what’s going on. If you need a book go to your truck, but don’t bring a book inside our home on what process or what procedure that needs to be done to correct the problem.

We also had bad ordeal with our water tank where the vendor didn’t do a great install and two years later, it went bad as a result of their faulty installation and the cost that you incur with HMS in replacing the water tank to me is exorbitant than most other warranty companies. We weren’t happy with the water tank replacement because it was replaced in 2011 and then it was replaced in 2015 or 2014 and it was too soon for us to have to come out with a $1000 or $1200 for something that we weren’t responsible for and doing a poor install initially.

TotalProtect was convenient so we went for them as our home warranty provider. Right now however, we are considering cancelling the policy. We had a few claims. The one regarding the dishwasher went very smoothly and was taken care of very promptly. We were very happy with the representative from Sears that TP sent out.

The biggest problem we had and we still have this outstanding issue is with our AC unit. I was very disappointed in the way that it was handled. I actually made several calls and spoke to several people regarding it, including the supervisor. 2 out of the 3 representative that came out to my home to make the repair or give a diagnostic were poor English speakers, and I really felt like I was being ripped off. It was like a scam, and I told them this.

All three of the different people that came out to take a look at the AC unit had different opinions as to what was wrong with it. So if I were to go ahead and make the suggested repair, there was no guarantee that the part of the AC was still going to still work after that. And even with that, we would probably have to fork out about $2,000 and repair everything or go with a new unit. The person that I spoke to with the TotalProtect had told me that it's very complicated and difficult for me to understand.

When I googled for reviews on the representatives that they sent for the AC repair, there were over a hundred negative reviews on them. The AC guys were a bunch of jokers and were very inappropriate with the way they spoke to me. I went back and explained all of this to TotalProtect and basically the end result was that we had to go with what was covered. Therefore, I still have an AC unit that's not working. I actually paid some of my own money to get another (unbiased) opinion on the AC from a company off their list. The man gave a totally different reason as to what he felt was wrong with the AC. In fact, he was the one who I would have probably trusted to have just gone ahead and fixed it. But TotalProtect would not authorize that because he was the third person.

I really think it comes down to who they're choosing to do the work. I think if Sears would have been doing the AC, I probably wouldn't have had that problem. But they're getting these small companies, and when I called more reputable companies in my area, they say they don't deal with those. I think what happens is that these little companies aren't going to get a lot of money from TotalProtect so they have to make money some other way, like proposing deals that has nothing to do with the issue that I'm having. This is the first time I've ever had anything like this kind of a protection. I don't think I would ever do it again because I just don't think it's worth it.

The two men that came out told me they were putting the claim one day but they didn't and I had to call them the next day to get them to put in the claim. #2 Contractor waited until they got the part into the store before they even scheduled the appointment to come out. I shouldn't have to wait for a part to come in, and then wait another week for your schedule to clear up when I could have made this appointment a week in advance.

Another problem is that you can't go to anyone else. If I had stayed with another company whom we paid to check to our AC unit prior to submitting the claim, I would have paid a thousand dollars and had it fixed within the same day, but because I went to HMS, it took three weeks to be repaired, and I paid a hundred dollars for the deductible. I couldn't blame HMS but I talked to them about who they're hiring or contracting work out to. I would definitely never use that contractor personally.

We had a nice GE dishwasher that stopped halfway through a cycle with an "OE" error and wouldn't drain. I called Total Protect to get it fixed. They sent out a company who were VERY nice and professional and fixed it. It worked for 2 full loads and then did the same thing with the "OE" error and not draining. They sent an order in again to that company who I scheduled an appointment with and when they guy came out he determined that the control board has failed and it was skipping cycles and not draining. The appliance repair company could not get the piece so Total Protect was called upon to get it on their end. It was finally determined that they no longer make the control board anymore for that dishwasher. Total Protect made the decision to cover a new dishwasher. Great. Everything went smooth and quickly with repairs up until THIS POINT! until they had to actually REPLACE the unit and everything went down hill.......
The lady at Total Protect told us that once she orders the dishwasher they should have it in within a few days. That was the last we heard from them. I decided to call them a few days later to see if they got the dishwasher in and the person told me they did get it in and that they were scheduled to come out and deliver/install it on Friday (in TWO days). I guess they just were never going to call and let us know? So I asked if there was a time frame and she said, there was no timeframe at that time. I took off work and Friday morning called them to see if there was a time. They transferred me to a third party who was supposed to be the company that was delivering it. Well the lady over at that company said they were NOT the correct company and it was a different company that was delivering it. I called the number she gave me and THAT company said they had our dishwasher but did NOT have a scheduled date to come out and deliver it. They were unable to do it that day at all. They were able to get me in on the following day which I was working. I called Total Protect back an told them what happened and they transferred me to the manager who acted as if it was my fault. She said I was supposed to call the delivery company and schedule a date with them (even though my file shows THEY scheduled a date for Friday). Then proceeded to ask me which company had my dishwasher and what number I was given.

What????!!!!!!!! How do you NOT have this information??? I'm so confused and lost over this situation! How were we supposed to know what company was delivering the dishwasher in the first place??? And how did they even get a delivery date in their system?!!! The MANAGER didn't even know who had my dishwasher because they had a different delivery company in their system. My husband and I thought that Sears, GE, or Total Protect were going to be the actual company coming out to install it because their the ones that gave us the delivery date. This company is extremely disorganized, horrible at communicating with their customers and third parties and after all that her attitude with me gave us a bad taste in our mouth. We never got an appology for completely dropping the ball on us. I'm assuming they don't replace many appliances so when the time comes, they just don't know what to do or how to even get the claim for a replacement finalized. This department needs to be educated in this process. Even if they knew what the correct delivery company was and just told me to call myself to schedule with them (like the manager said was SUPPOSED to happen) that would have been fine! It's the miscommunication with us, with the delivery company, and making up a random date in their system and then not even calling to let us know anything is what is so unprofessional about this situation. The dishwasher is "supposed" to be delivered tomorrow, we will see if they even show up. We don't have high hopes. Oh and we were never even given a claim or order number for this either...

I understand that and he promised that he will come the minute he gets the part and fix it no matter what time it was.

What upset me was that he called me and he said that the part is in, but there's no way that he can do it since he was tired and going home from out of town. He said that he will be with me first thing in the morning, but instead, he came on the afternoon. When he got here, he took the thing apart again and started putting things on the carpet in the hall. He said that he was going to have to go out on the front porch because it was too hot in here. I wanted to go hit him over the head since, yes, it's hot in here and that's what I've been telling him for four days. I also asked him to go check out and see if I need any freon in the AC. He goes out and said that the AC needs not much but it does need some freon and when he brings these parts back, he will put it in.

So when he put everything together, I said to him not to forget to go put some Freon out but he said that it doesn't need it. I said to him that he just told me that the AC needed freon and when he comes back, he'd do it. He then said that I was lying to him and that he never said that. I don't know what was wrong with him, but I would never have him back out here. It's really dangerous here in San Antonio when the heat gets like that especially for older people and children, so I was concerned and my children were, too. But we toughed it out and I made it. Although, this last group that has come out for my dishwasher and my dryer have been so nice. They've come back and done some things so I would still recommend TotalProtect to a friend.

We got to know about HMS through our real estate agent and so far, we're so happy with their service. Their claims reps were excellent and they answered all my questions. Moreover, most of the technicians that came were excellent too. We had their services on the microwave, the water softener and the garbage disposal and all of them were great.

I've had TotalProtect for more than five years and they've always been great when I've had problems. I keep their number right where I can get to it any time I need it. I give them a call and they call me back ahead of time to let me know they were coming. They're out here within a day and take care of my problem. It's just been wonderful. The claims representatives and the technicians have always been very polite. I'm grateful that somebody came up with this idea because having a home warranty is helpful.
