Our neighbors referred TotalProtect to us and so far, it has been terrible. Our warranty covers our condo unit in North Wildwood and out of the six condo units there, there's three or four of us that have TotalProtect. Submitting a claim is very difficult. We called for electrical inspection the last time. Apparently, TotalProtect doesn't have anybody down in the Cape May County area. They were sending us someone from Gloucester County, who only go to Cape May one day a week, which is Wednesday. We work during the week and are there only on the weekend, so we were trying to make arrangements for Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday, but they could not accommodate us. They were never able to send anyone out. I hope they could change some of the problems we're having. We're talking about canceling it. We've had it for several years now but were not getting anything for $58 a month.

We purchased a home back in the spring of last year. The seller offered to pay for a home warranty and HMS Home Warranty was the one I chose. I've filed three claims with them and I've gotten good responses. I've been very pleased. All three technicians that I've encountered had been very professional, too. The work performed weren't major but they were done well. It's been a very good experience and come June, I'm going to re-up with them.

Submitting a claim with TotalProtect has been great. I can call any time of the day and the representatives have been nice and helpful. I have two claims that I had to go through. The people who fixed my hot water heater were amazing and nice. The technician almost missed his flight so I could get hot water. But, I was not as excited as my dryer getting fixed because it took about two weeks, but it wasn't TotalProtect's fault. Overall, I'm definitely satisfied and very happy that I got TotalProtect. I saved a lot of money for two good repairs within a few months of getting the home warranty. I'm a school teacher and I would freak out if somebody told I owe it a thousand dollars. So, having TotalProtect is worth it and easy or I'd never be able to pay like if my air conditioner goes out.

It's extremely easy to file a claim. The claims reps are always very helpful and accommodating. This is a continuation of a previous claim, as what the new person TotalProtect sent said, because the problem didn't get fixed the first time. He seemed to work to try to get it resolved, but he had to come back several times. I'm still waiting for him to come back because he said he had parts to order so he hasn't finished the work.

Original Review: Feb. 24, 2016
We have had Total Protect for several years and have always been very satisfied, until today. We called about a leak in the base of our facet in the kitchen. The representative was very clear that if it was a drip from the facet tip it would not be covered - I explained that it was at the base and the water leaked all over the counter when you turn the facet on and She said that would be covered. When the service provider came today he checked out the leak, went to his truck and called Total Protect. When he returned he said that it was not covered. So we paid him our co-payment and an additional $75.00 to fix it, but after several trips to his truck he didn't have the correct wrench with him so that company is crediting back the additional money charged since they couldn't fix it. I have never had a problem with Total Protect until today - I am very dissatisfied with how this claim was handled! We would not have had someone come out to the house if they would have told us up front it wasn't covered and we could have put that money to the repair.

I've been with TotalProtect for 10 years. I knew of them from my bank when they said they'd give me a loan to buy a house. I've had one technician who almost broke my HVAC. He overloaded it and HMS Home Warranty denied that he did but he wrote it on the receipt and that's when HMS finally stacked up into the problem. The house I purchased last year came with an HMS warranty. I have placed two claims so far, and it has been easy. With the first claim, the technician spoke good English, but he barely said "hello" or "goodbye". It came to the point where I had to have a second visit from the same contractor to fix what was not fixed. As for the second claim, I was given a time that the gentleman was supposed to appear at my home and he did not show up on time. Of course I waited, and it came to the point where I had to call and they said they were on their way. He came an hour later, and when it came time to do the work, it was delayed by a day or two.
They called me at the last minute to say the technician wasn't going to make it. He was supposed to have been there by 9:00, but he never showed up. And they explained that it was because he got called on to do another job. To me, once the appointment is scheduled, it's scheduled. I don't have any complaints regarding HMS. My main concern was the contractors that they work with.

TotalProtect did a good job and referred a very good company, Haire Plumbing, so I was very satisfied. When I submitted the claim, the people on the phone have been positive. However, it's too bad the customer can't ask for proven performers. I live way out in the country and I know some proven performance here that I'd like to be able to call and still have covered under TotalProtect. But it was going to be difficult to do that so I went with who TotalProtect referred. I'd recommend them.

I first heard about TotalProtect through the mortgage company when we bought the house. The technician that came has always been knowledgeable. When I've noticed they need total replacement of an item, there's always a lot of add-on charges so the warranty doesn't really cover it. I would like them to give me an idea what it would cost to upgrade since I know there are different tiers or protocols. There's a builder's quality and then there are different grades which they don't give me the cost.

The concept of having some aging appliances made us decide getting a warranty would be worthwhile. TotalProtect was recommended by our bank. Submitting a claim with them has been mostly good and their reps have been friendly. However, sometimes it's been a little bit slow in getting repairmen lined up. There have been a few that were a little less than desirable, but for the most part it's ok. So far, our experience with them has been adequate.

I have a positive, efficient and professional experience with HMS Home Warranty. It was a very good service and a wonderful program. It's very manageable and I've passed the information along to a few of my co-workers as well. I decided to have a home warranty because I don't want to come out-of-pocket and pay for something all at once. I was able to submit a claim via online and over the phone. Both ways are very simple and easy to do.
The claims rep is extremely helpful. As a matter of fact, last February, there was a situation where I had a pipe that burst. But that was not necessarily covered since the warranty covers regular wear-and-tear. But the person was helping me to figure out what I needed to do next with my insurance company. So even though it wasn't something directly related to them, as water was continuing to pour into my house, they were still giving me assistance. I was really in a panic and they were helping me in trying to turn the shut-off valve that was stuck.
Recently, I had a technician come out as I was having some issues with my plumbing. He was super professional. It was like I can even charge HMS the deductible amount. I had another technician fix the sensor on the refrigerator and he was very efficient and fast. Anyone that I've dealt with in HMS has been absolutely fantastic and the quality of work was very good.

I've got several claims submitted to TotalProtect and the last one went well. They have a fairly easy claims process and all in all it's been pretty good but sometimes they can be difficult getting the right go-to person to do the work. The technician mostly dealt with my wife but I did meet him once and he was fantastic, extremely friendly, and a really nice guy. It took twice to get the problem analyzed because the part he originally thought, wasn't the part. But he definitely did everything he could to get us taken care of.

It's challenging submitting claims with HMS. They would put the problem in the system, but, they would give the information for someone who currently can't fix the problem, so my dad would call HMS. The technicians either have broken tools or aren't available right away. HMS should have validated whether the people can fix the issue before they give us the number or information.
We had a gas leak in our home one time so HMS had someone come out right away. But then there was a back-up with the leak and HMS didn't have a someone to fix it. They have contractors who didn't answer the phone or could not do the job. The good thing was that HMS escalated it with the gas leak in the home because the family had to be removed. Called back, put another claim, and was re-routed to someone else. The second person who came out don't even have the equipment to fix the issue. Called back a third time to file another claim and to me, calling three times to get a gas leak fixed was outrageous. I filed a claim to assess and repair the washer and submitting the claim was pretty easy. Because I live out of state, we were only at our second residence for a week. The repair person was supposed to show up on a certain day within a specific window time period and he did not show up. So I’m still dealing with this claim and have it rescheduled for next week.
My second claim was for the water heater, and the technician came out. In addition to paying my deductible, they told me that there were code requirements that needed to be upgraded that were not covered by the policy, which I understand. However, as it turned out, some of what they were calling code requirements were not in fact code requirements. So therefore I ended up paying an additional $500 to have my water heater replaced when in fact I could have gone out on the market and had it done for about the same price without the warranty. So overall, I don’t think I got any value out of the warranty at all.

I have done two claims with HMS since purchasing the warranty. The first one went fine. I called and went online to the form and got somebody and then, called the plumber. I liked the plumber that came - he did the work and everything worked well. The second time didn't go so well. Same process - went online, got a number and called the plumber, but something happened. I had a bad feeling from the start in the sense that when he picked up the phone, he was driving in his car and it's like, "Yeah, can you text me your claim number?" I know that in today's day and age, texting is sort of considered a form of communication but it just doesn't feel very professional.
So the guy shows up, tells me it's this huge, complicated problem that he can't fix. And I'd already waited two days for him to come, so that was frustrating. I live in a condo and he told me that the thing that was broken was part of the condo's area. The condo sent their plumber and when I described what I was told and what kind of fixes needed to happen, they looked at me like I was crazy and said, "No. Their guy just doesn't know what he's doing. I'm gonna fix it right now." And he did.
On top of it, when the guy contracted by HMS left, he didn't connect the bottom of the sink, the trap area. So the next day, when the plumbers sent by the condo came over and went to open it and take everything out so that they could work on it, water had filled the space. All the cardboard boxes and anything that was in them were destroyed. I had to clean all of that up.
I called HMS in because I was frustrated about the fact that I paid this guy and I wanted to make sure I got my money back and that they didn't pay him because he didn't do the job. But when I told the rep about it she said that they don't do that kind of thing. And I was like, "I don't want to argue with you. Just send me to a supervisor." She kept trying to push the point but I insisted so she ended up giving me their supervisor.
At the end of the day, the supervisor did take care of everything. But the way that she communicated it frustrated me because instead of saying, "Oh, I understand the situation and this is how we can get you your money back," she was like, "Well, I can't give you the money back because you didn't pay us. You paid him." And it started out feeling like a negative. But it doesn't really matter to me who does what. I just wanna feel like I'm getting taken care of.

I feel safe and secure that it's not going to cost me a lot of money if something happens today. All of the people that I've talked to when filing for a claim have been very helpful, courteous, and go beyond and help me get my problem solved the best way they can. They do a great job. I tell them what's going on, they give me my claim number and they'd call the repair person and set up a time to come. The technician was very friendly and nice. I had to wait the next day to fix my furnace because it went out in the evening and he couldn't make it until the next morning. He got here early afternoon and had me running by 5:00 pm. Keep up the good work, HMS Home Warranty. It has been a great and wonderful experience. It's really a peace of mind.

We had a problem with our refrigerator and HMS scheduled an appointment, and a guy came and fixed it. The technician was very friendly, knowledgeable and did a great job. Then we had an adjustment or a fix that we needed on our stove and HMS couldn't find the part, so they gave us a new stove. The claims rep told us how to submit the forms. I paid for the unit first and then they sent me a reimbursement for up to a certain amount and guided me through the process. They told me what my limit is as far as dollars and gave me some options that I could spend within the limit if I want. Everything is working fine and meets our expectations.

I've got three places with TotalProtect Home Warranty. I recently made a claim with them for my condo in Florida and they did real well. My tenant who lives there was pleased with the work that they did. But years ago, the air conditioner went out on the condo that I just made some small claims on. And TotalProtect said, "Oh sorry, you didn't have a maintenance agreement on it". They refused to pay and that cost me $3500 on a credit card so I was extremely upset. I said, "Well, nobody told me that I was supposed to have it". Then they said, "You should've read the fine print in the booklet" - which I didn't. So they were right, I was wrong.
But, when they have clients like me, somebody should verbally say, "Hey, here's what's not covered. Be careful". They don't do that and so I was going to drop them but then my hot water heater went out on the property up in South Carolina. They replaced it with no questions asked, $75 deductible. I was very pleased and all the other claims, including this latest one in Florida, I've been happy with so I stayed with them.

2. I called Total Protect back and spoke with Rita, a case manager, who was no help at all. She too was short and adamant with me. She stated that our unit is working normally. How can she say that? She is not a mechanic and she has not been out to our house to observe our specific problem or to check the system out to evaluate what could be causing our issue, and I am sure she does not have the exact same unit as we do at her house there in Florida to know what is normal for us here in Nevada. She will not believe me when I say that heating issue is still ongoing even after this 2nd attempt to fix it.
I am told that we need to pay the additional $125 to have someone else come out to evaluate the unit even though it is still under Total Protect's "guarantee period". And then, even if someone else comes out they may not be able to fix it anyway. The very same unit that was replaced by Total Protect in June 2015 for an A/C problem, which the installation of said unit actually broke the heat pump because the heat pump worked fine up to that point is not going to be fixed.
Total Protect does not live up to it's claims. We are suppose to renew our contract with them this month. Really? And just why would we do that?

We got HMS Home Warranty with the house when we bought it. The claims process was not difficult at all. I put in two claims, one for the oven, the second one was for the heater system. I gave the claims representative my name and address and they said that we would be contacted by someone from Sears and the second time I did over the internet so I didn't contact anyone particularly. I was surprised the following morning. Before 8 someone was calling me to come by to see the heating system. The technician was very kind and explained to me what was wrong with the unit in a good amount of time. It was really nice to know that someone will be answering my call as soon as possible. We found that the amount we have to pay upfront during a year to get the service is maybe a little high so we're discussing if we're going to renew or not.

When we called in our claim the first time, the plumbing people that HMS Home Warranty first referred us to do not service our area. HMS said somebody will call me back, and I waited 24 hours for a call back, but nobody did. I had to wait three or four days before finally getting ahold of somebody and that’s when they told us that our area wasn’t serviced by that contractor. I had to call HMS back again and at that point, they did a great job of sending us somebody that serviced our area. The technician did a good job.

But over the past few years, there’s no difficulty at all especially that I can do it in their website. And usually within 30 minutes, I have a response back with a vendor to call. I had an air conditioner problem recently and the guy that came out for it was knowledgeable, cheerful, knew what he was doing and with all around experience. The AC had a faulty circuit card that he was able to buy fast while he ordered the replacement. And then when the replacement came in, he called and came back, and put everything back the way it should have been in a very short period of time. I give them a call, they get the information, then they either give me the number of the service people or they call them and they call for an appointment. And then the service guy comes out and checks what's going on. He usually ends up giving TotalProtect a call and getting an okay, and then I pay my $60 co-pay. They've done a lot. The first guy never even came back. The second guy had been here before. I like him but he just didn’t find what the problem was.
I complained about it the first and second time it didn’t work. I still feel cold heat in. Then the third guy came in. Right off the bat, he said he knew what it was, but it took a couple of days to get the part and we paid three deductibles. They sent one deductible back but I still ended up paying two deductibles to get the same problem repaired within the same time frame of complaining. Because I want my heat fixed, I agreed to pay it. I know we're not getting our air condition replaced at no charge. Also, it's not going to be just $75 deductible. By the time I had replaced everything, I was almost $3,000 out of pocket. So, they need to be a little more upfront about the expenses and not in small print. If they're going give us plans then we need to know that there's going to be X amount of charges that we're not gonna pay for.
I've had several things done and everything has been great. I have no complaints as far as calling them and getting them out there. You would like to call them back if you have an issue with something similar or with another appliance or what have you. We don’t have that option with TotalProtect. It would be great to be able to have that input.
I really enjoy having the privilege of working with them in many different capacities as far as with my appliances are concerned. The water heater is old and making noise, says not covered. What good is a warranty company if they tell you all these things are covered BEFORE you sign with them and then when they need repair/replacement, can't get authorization. There is no one in the Northern Arizona area who is ever available to repair anything for days. Took ONE month - FOUR WEEKS to get our garage door opener fixed. Ice maker had to be "repaired" twice and was very uncomfortable with who they sent out to do the repair. Also an unprofessional laborer was sent to repair the shower valve. It's a good thing that the weather was nice and nothing went wrong because I was going out of town. If something had happened, they would have lawsuit on their hands and I meant that.
Anyway, I got a call the next Monday and I told them I didn't want to see the company because I had a case number but no one called. So they sent a company out that was very good and the gentleman explained it was a paper scraping the fan that's causing the noise. They took the paper off and I got charged $75 because I didn't know what it was. TotalProtect's representatives are friendly and are able to answer my questions. They apologize when something goes wrong, but it doesn't help if something is going wrong and nobody comes or calls us back.

We've had one claim in the past year for a dishwasher and I called HMS and generally within a day someone from a service company that's local will give us a call and set up a time to come out and make the repair. They handled the work order and the claims technician and we just pay our deductible. We had Appliance Repair Pro come out to do our dishwasher right after I called. The contractor called the same day, came out that evening and took the part number. It took about a week for the part to come in, but he came out and it took him about an hour and had it all fixed.

Submitting a claim with TotalProtect is excellent. When I called, they put me through and gave me a reference number and contact number for the contractor who’s going to do the work. I called them and within a day or two, they came out and fixed what the problem was. Their quality of work has been very good. So far, I have no complaints.

My hot water heater went out around noon on New Year's Eve. I called HMS to file a claim and was told a service provider would be out the same day. HMS was unable to honor that agreement because their in-network providers were unavailable. It took them 3 hours to figure out that they did not have anyone available to service my home. In the meantime the water heater which is located on the second level of my home caused over $10K worth of damage to the floors, walls, ceiling etc on the two levels. HMS authorized me to find my own plumber but warned that I needed to have the plumber call for an authorization number prior to performing any work. I found a plumber willing to come out that day but was advised that there would be overtime rates. I called HMS back to confirm that it was ok to have them come out with the higher rates and I was advised that it was fine.
When the plumber came out and diagnosed the problem he called in for an authorization number, but was told that his rates would not be covered. I was bounced around throughout the authorization department trying to get approval for the plumber who was already physically at my home and able to complete the work. HMS did not authorize the full amount of the plumber's rates and I ended up paying out of pocket in hopes that HMS will reimburse me. Had I chose to wait for HMS to send their in-network plumber out I would have been without hot water for at least a week. That is unacceptable coverage.

TotalProtect has been great. Submitting claims is very easy and simple - give them a call and they'll connect you with whoever can assist you and they'd be right on it. We had some difficulties with the first technician so we had to call and change the company. TotalProtect immediately gave us another service person and they did the job immediately. They provide good quality of work and we have no complaints. Our experience having them has really been well. I was calling today to put in a claim for my dryer but I didn't have all the information, so I have to wait until I get to the house to tell them exactly what kind of dryer it was.

I am very frustrated with this company at this time, I feel like I have been given the run around. I had issues with my water heater, they gave me a number to call for a company to come out. I paid the $75 service charge and was told that total protect would only cover the cost of replacing my water heather but the other issues including bringing things back up to code was not covered and it would cost me an extra $470 dollars. I didnt like it but I was stuck so I agreed, that was on December 21st and was told that I should receive a call from them within 2 days to come back in and fix things. It is now 1/05 and I still have not had my water heater fixed. I called total protect on 12/30 after not being able to figure out what the issue was thru the repair company and the customer service rep, assured me that he contacted the repair company and due to the holidays the shipment of the water heater was delayed but the water heater was ordered and was on the truck being delivered. Frustrated with that answer, I figured it was nothing that I could do and would have to wait. On Saturday 1/2 I called the repair company again and got their answering service and was told that I would receive a call on Monday for follow up but never got a call. Called the repair company back this morning and was told that they still have not received the water heater from the warranty company. I became very frustrated at that point because the previous customer service rep with the warranty company led me to believe that the water heater was coming from the repair company. I called the warranty company back and was told that the water heater was never ordered because I didnt call in and agree to the excess charges. When I spoke to the representative on 12/30 I was never told this and the rep acted as if the repair company had already ordered it. So now I have to wait an additional 2 days for them to actually order it. I am not happy about this at all, I have been dealing with this for 3 weeks and any other company would have resolved this issue in 3 days or less.
Updated 1/12/2016 - I wrote my first complaint on 1/05, a day after I wrote the review, the warranty company contacted me and said they would take care of SOME of the access charges which made me feel some what better especially knowing that they promised that I would hear something back around Thursday of last week which was January 7th. Here it is January 12th and I still have not heard back after being promised that the water heather was being expedited to the repair company and it would take 2 to 3 days. I am so livid at this point, I have also called the warranty company back and left a message on their voicemail and still have yet to receive a call. Can anyone advise me on another route to go or who I can take this up further with, you can email me at **. This is the worst warranty company ever this has almost been a month that I have been dealing with this issue.

We called HMS to get our dishwasher fixed. A guy came out, figured out what was wrong and said that it needed to be fully replaced because of all the parts that were needed to fix it. After six days, two guys came out, took the old dishwasher and replaced it with the new one. Though there's a little dampness by the door when we shut it when it's running, we're still happy with it. They couldn't take the old washer with them but they carried it down some steps and put in on my back deck until I'm able to get rid of it. It would have been difficult for my wife and me to carry that down the steps.

My experience with TotalProtect was good! I used them on my ice maker and I had no problems in submitting that claim. They sent somebody up quick and the tech came and fixed it. The quality of the work that was performed was good. Since the tech repaired it, everything was okay with the ice maker. It was only plugged up and the guy showed me how to unplug it in the future. We had to pull out and take some lines and stuff off of it, but it was only half frozen ice and the lines. I was happy with him. The only thing is, I didn't get the receipt when I paid him. He said his hand-held printer that he carries with him was down so he couldn't give a receipt. But I paid to Sears and he might have taken care of it. I only wanted to make sure my payment was going to go through so I wouldn't have to pay again. Other than that, it wasn't frustrating. I appreciate the coverage and I'm glad I've got it because you never know what could happen.

I'm satisfied with the service that HMS Home Warranty provides. I haven't had any real problems when submitting a claim and for the most part, it was easy and they were courteous. I had an emergency with the thermostat, and I have a 90-year-old mother that lives with me and we didn't have heat. I called that Friday and they told me they couldn't get anyone here until Monday or Tuesday and I said that was not acceptable. I spoke with someone and they finally got out someone out that Saturday and it turned out fine.
But I've had one bad experience in my 15 years with them, which may not be a big thing to HMS but it was to me because I don't know what my status is. Someone called me for a renewal during the early part of November and I'm supposed to renew my contract and get the bill. I never got one until last week and I had made about five calls looking for my bill and new contract. I finally spoke to someone last week and had to do a payment over the phone for two months. That in itself was very upsetting. I was ready to cancel but they called me to renew, and I said, "Yes, I was renewing."
I never got anything or heard from them about the bill. They kept saying, "Oh, we'll email you", but I never got an email, until last week, and I told them I was canceling. If I couldn't get something concrete and know that I was renewed, I don't need it. They should be truthful about renewing. It was them who called me and asked me to. I'm dissatisfied with this particular incident because I don't feel I had to follow them up. If I'm renewing, I should get my bills out in a timely manner and not continuously call to request a bill. If next year is going to be the same, I'm not going to renew.

I wanted a home warranty that can fix my appliances for very little money, and TotalProtect provided me that. I've been with them for at least ten years now and it works fine with me. I had people come, fix whatever is wrong, and they go after I pay their service fee. It's been easy.

Sometimes I get a surprise when filing a claim with TotalProtect when it goes really fast like my case last summer. However, I had an awful experience with them. I had no air conditioner for two months and it was such a nightmare. They sent me a technician that was absolutely for the birds. He knew nothing more with what he was doing than the man in the moon. First, it was established we got a Freon leak which when that happens, it freezes up so I have to defrost it. And so, he came out once a week and put Freon in there. It was just a joke. I called six weeks after the deal and complained which I should have done earlier. They called somebody else and the guy fixed it in no time. Other than that terrible experience, most of the time it has been good.

We got HMS Home Warranty when we purchased our house on the recommendation of our realtor. We got our initial policy and we have had some claims but the only one that was a little bit problematic was when our air conditioning went out. The firm that they're using wasn’t open on weekends and was very slow to get to us. But that was last year and the firms that they’re using now for when we have some furnace problems were excellent. The electrician that came out yesterday was great. The coverages are complete. There’s no hidden add-on fees and they honor deductibles. The people show up on time. HMS makes the claim filing very simple and it’s just an overall a very good experience. I’m very pleased that their coverage is true and I couldn’t be happier.

Filing a claim with TotalProtect was seamless. We contacted the company online and they responded within half an hour, and I was highly impressed. He’s actually the repair person. He knew what he was doing, was professional, and did the fixing really quick. This one time that we used it, we’re satisfied. But for this other time for the same problem with our wall heater, we weren’t so happy with it. After he said he replaced some equipment, we still had problems. But the recent person who actually came and fixed it, we haven’t had problems since. I would recommend TotalProtect to colleagues and friends.

We've had two claims with HMS Home Warranty and submitting the claim is easy because you can call or do it online. However, in our first claim we had trouble getting a service. It was a big runaround and it took us six weeks to get air conditioning in (in the middle of July). The first people they sent were fine but they didn't agree with what their findings were. So they hired a second group and they were horrible. The lady who answered the phone was rude and never had time to answer any of my questions. If I need to know where the part was, she would tell me that I needed to call the HMS Warranty people. She made me do all the work -- hunting and finding.
I was not satisfied with the quality of work that was performed in our first claim too. But in our second claim with HMS for the heat, there was no issue. I called them that day and they had somebody out the next day. The customer service and the people who came and serviced it were great. They had it all taken care of within two or three days. And the quality of work done was fine.

I've had TotalProtect Home Warranty for about nine years. The technicians who have come to service my appliances, as well the quality of work that was performed, have all been good. But I have a suggestion that would be better for TotalProtect and for us too. As it stands, I file a claim, they give me a person, I call that person, and the person comes and does the work. That's the current process. But that's not the best process for them or for me because, for one thing, they aren't getting the best price they could get.
For instance, when my water heater went out, I had to go to their guy. Their guy came and charged an exorbitant amount, way more than he should have, which meant two things: TotalProtect paid more than they had to and I had to pay out-of-pocket because the home warranty doesn't cover the water pan and he charged $75 for a $5 pan. It still only cost me a couple of hundred dollars out-of-pocket, which is better than it would have cost if I didn't have the insurance, but it shouldn't have cost either TotalProtect or me that much.
And so my recommendation is that they should let us pick our own people. Then I can say, "Hey, here's the guy I found. This is how much he's going to charge and this is what he's going to do." And then if they don't approve that, they can always say, "No, we want you to go with this other person." These people are robbing TotalProtect because they know it's a guaranteed contract. So TotalProtect needs to look at the way they're doing it. For them to name only one person with no competition -- when a guy comes to my house and he knows I'm going to pay and they're going to take whatever he says -- that's a recipe for high prices. They need to get three people to look at the job and let them compete for it, not only one person. I could have done my water heater for half the price as I got charged based on the five other plumbers I had talked to.

TotalProtect has been great, so far. In terms of submission for a claim, it’s extremely easy. I usually speak to a representative, and they are typically friendly and knowledgeable. However, sometimes the providers they choose take awhile to get to me. The technicians are often professional and are actually very good. Overall, the quality of their work is excellent. I would definitely recommend them.

HMS looked like a good deal, appropriate, and something I wanted so I went ahead and subscribed. My experiences with them are generally very positive almost every time even though there might have been an exception here and there over the years. The technicians are on time and reliable. They communicate and the work is good. Moreover, the claims representatives for the last couple of years have been very helpful, responsive, quick, and successful. With most instances, and certainly recently, the quality of the work performed is totally satisfactory. Probably did have one exception but it is several years ago. Some years ago, it was hit and miss and I almost quit several times. But right now, I’m perfectly satisfied.

I've been with TotalProtect for a while since their home warranty was included in my mortgage years ago. But there was a gap in my coverage when the bank stopped paying them. I had to call TotalProtect to reinstate me and we had to start a new policy. I was looking for a repair of the hot water heater for the heating system. I called on the weekend so obviously that was a computerized experience. I didn't hear for a day and a half or so from anybody so I tried to contact them again. When I finally got a live body, they didn't know what happened. But it wasn't bad, although I was in that cold outside. When they did come over to fix it, they were fine. Those guys did a great job expeditiously and I'm happy. They're a good company.

One of them came and put in the part wrong, so he had to come back. Overall, HMS has a very quick service which I appreciate.
