Submitting a claim with TotalProtect is easy. I just call them and they give me a number and tell me who to call. The technician contacts me within an hour or two, and sometimes the next day if it's late at night. They come out and fix it. I've never had a real bad problem and everything goes fine.

GMAC recommended TotalProtect to me. I've been with them for probably ten years and I never had any problems. Anything I’ve ever called about, other than paying my deductible, they took care of it. Most of the time, I submit claims over the phone and within three or four hours, a technician contacts me. I’ve always had good interactions with the technicians and their work has been satisfactory. Everything’s been good with TotalProtect.

I would say only one thing, "Think before getting into the contract with these." They provide you with contractors who come out, they will promise you call will be completed and if the unit breaks within their 90-day period they will state something else is broken and you will have to pay the minimum $100 and additional expenses which is normally not covered by HMS. Add to this, if you want to speak to manager its minimum 48 hours and if you are lucky you will get a call in that time or else you need to call back but in the meantime the money you are paying keeps on getting deducted and your service for which you called is still down.
I had aircondition breakdown and it took them 18 days to fix it in the temperatures exceeding 90+ degrees and in the meantime you will always get the message "Due to high call volume, we are busy", where they don't realize the service provided is useless and this is resulting in return calls and delays. I had multiple properties with HMS and have remove from auto-renewal as they state you are on a monthly payment but a yearly contract and you cannot stop your plan until the year ends. I hope some of their manager reads this and thinks this as a wake up call.

The actual process of submitting a claim and calling on HMS Home Warranty is fine but I'm not particularly thrilled with some of the contractors that they send out. I find some of the contractors to be absolutely lazy and lack integrity. Their work quality is average to below average. I feel that there could be a better class of people who HMS works with and would like to have an opportunity to use a contractor that I know and trust, rather than the hacks that they send.

Claim submission is really efficient. It might take a day or two to get something fixed and order parts but other than that, it's great. I like that I can make a phone call and it saves me some bucks. I had an issue with my air conditioner and the technician called me the next day. He was great and very professional. However, when he ordered the part, it was the wrong part so he reordered it. The service took a few days longer and I just went and stayed with my mom while he was fixing the problem because my house was so hot.

Horrible, horrible experience. This company left me with a malfunctioning 5-ton AC unit; refused to honor its contractual obligations and left me with more than 45 days suffering through 3 heat waves and no AC at all. Please avoid this company at all cost. Their only interest is to collect fees and not to give any reimbursements for service which was not performed. In fact this company needs to be investigated by the government for false promises and inability to perform.

When we bought our house in 2006, the previous owners had HMS and they liked it. We just continued. The customer service representatives are always nice and very helpful. Submitting a claim is easy once you get through on the phone. Sometimes it's hard to get through and it can be frustrating, but other than that, it's been great. I wouldn't give it up for sure.

My house is 25 years old, and a warranty beats all of the times paying for thousands of dollars in repair. I was already with the Protect group, and they said this upgrade with TotalProtect would cover other items I wasn’t aware of so I upgraded the service. Submitting a claim with TotalProtect is easy, however, getting the job done has always been hard. I had three claims in five years and everything was a real hassle. I even had to file Better Business Bureau charges. I also filed charges to the Chamber of Commerce in Florida trying to get something repaired on my air conditioning that was taking months to get repaired with TotalProtect not wanting to pay the bill.
With the three most recent claims I filed, it took two days to a week for a technician to contact me. The most recent technician who came out was a good guy. The electronic buttons on my washing machine went bad. It wasn’t a critical repair but it took a long time to get it done. At first, they assigned it to one person at Sears, and they never got with me in two days. They then re-assigned it to another guy in Ashland, Virginia. He got with me in about a day and another day to get him to come out. He had to order parts through TotalProtect and it took a week. It took nine days to get it repaired, but it wasn't the repairman’s fault, it was TotalProtect holding up.
The repair people have been good to work it, but it takes TotalProtect so long to get through the processes they go through, and I reckon it’s a process of getting the cheapest parts. The incident involving the washing machine was crazy because the parts were available down at the parts dealership when I called. Before that, the air conditioning started acting up. It took a week for TotalProtect to get someone out, and when it cooled down from the 90’s to the upper 70’s, the AC wasn’t acting up anymore. I don’t think that repair was ever done but it’s working fine now.

I got TotalProtect when I built a new house and I had it for five years before I knew I had it because it was paid through my mortgage. The first two claims I had, I never got them done. The problem is I live in a remote rural area and it's difficult to find and get people to come out here and repair stuff. Then something happened this month on my dryer and TotalProtect went through a lengthy list to find somebody to do the repair work for me. The guy who came out and fixed my dryer was wonderful, friendly, and professional.
For the walk-in tub, the first guy who came didn't know how to fix it so I just paid him the initial consultation fee. Then TotalProtect sent some other techs from Shelby County, Tennessee to come and fix the tub. They did a good job, except for the fact that they had to cut a hole in my wall and left it. They also left the place a little dirty. Other than these, I'm really pleased with the effort TotalProtect put in to find for me someone to come fix whatever had broken. They put in extra effort and I appreciate it.

Their rep was super nice. Because the people that they first recommended would be five or six days before they get to me due to back log because of the holiday I called HMS back. Their rep got somebody else. She didn't blow me off or put me off and there were two guys that came. They weren't here very long but they were very nice. They told me if I had anymore problems, to give them a call and they'd be glad to come back. They were really nice and very professional.
I have no complaints with HMS. I just renewed with them on the 1st of July and I'm retired and on a fixed income and it was very, very hard for me to pay that this year but if anything major goes wrong, I'm gonna be really happy that I have it.

HMS is very efficient. I have dealt with several different home maintenance companies and HMS is one of the better ones. The rep was very friendly and customer-focused. Their staff followed up and made sure I had everything I needed. I got an email from them telling me the information they gave me on the phone and told me who to call. Additionally, the technician explained everything to me about the upfront charge, what he had to do and how he's going through it and if he couldn't fix the appliance, what he would do and how long it would take. He also gave me a lot of information plus he followed through. When he came out, he came to replace something again and he had to get back with HMS to get it approved. Once it was approved, by that date he gave me, he had it installed. He's very reliable and the work performed was very good.

I have appliances and I didn't want something to tear up on me all of a sudden and then I got to come out of my pocket. So I looked for insurance and I already have another policy but I didn't like how they operate it. Then my bank, Founders, told me about TotalProtect and I like the way they service me and how they operate. With TotalProtect, I file claims over the phone and tell them my appliance and the next thing, they call me, give a claim number, and get somebody on it. We are pleased.

I've been with HMS for 26 years. It’s a lot easier these days to submit a claim but the problem is getting the repair work done. My last three claims have not been good. I had to get a different contractor come in because the first person could not do the repair. The last one took over two weeks of misguided information between the contractor and HMS to get a repair done. Then on Monday, I had a refrigerator freezer problem and the contractor came out that evening but left here without fixing the problem. He told us that there's no sense in fixing it because it has been serviced three times before and there's a leak in the system of the freon or the refrigerant. He'd recommend to HMS that they replace it because it's not economically repairable.
I called this morning to see the status, but the contractor has not submitted a service report and no one has any knowledge of it. So now I am sitting with lost food because of the freezer problem and have no freezer to use because the contractor had not yet submitted the report and the customer rep gave me a false number to contact so we could not contact him. I've had good luck on most repairs before although there were times that they cannot get here. I can't deal with somebody that's not coming for 10 days on an air conditioning or a heating system. They're happy if they're paid and everything goes okay, but they don't want to talk when there's a problem. When the contract is up, HMS is history. I've had too many problems and I'm not gonna put up with it anymore.
HMS hires fly-by-night people to do some of their repairs. There's no office and no company as such. It's only a title and a guy who does repairs. But my biggest problem was with the repair has been this refrigerator freezer. The Freon has been recharged for this refrigerator Freezer. I have spent $400 to $500 of deductible money and I don’t know what the guys charge HMS when they left here. I give them my deductible, but the company has spent much more than the cost of a new refrigerator.

Shortly after purchasing a new condo the compressor failed on my 22 year-old HVAC system. HMS Home Warranty was unable to provide an HVAC service partner for my home outside of Washington, DC and suggested I find my own provider. The total expense that I incurred for the replacement of my HVAC system was $5,259.42. I fully understand that all charges associated with the replacement of my HVAC system are not covered in my home warranty (ductwork, etc.). After many, many phone calls to HMS and hours spent on hold, I was ultimately told by an HMS representative that regardless of the expenses itemized by my service provider, HMS Home Warranty would not reimburse any charges beyond $3,420. It seems deceitful that they were unable to provide ANY service providers in the Washington Metropolitan area, yet dictate the amount of reimbursement for the claim regardless of itemization by the service provider.

All of our providers that TotalProtect sent have been very positive. The biggest problem for us is we forget and miss some of our quarters wherein we're allowed to have somebody come in every quarter to check on things. But they always do a wonderful job. The most recent one was an air conditioning company. Our contract only calls for one air conditioner so we just pay for the second unit to be serviced. The provider did a good job of servicing both air conditioners. It was just fine and I feel good about it. Furthermore, filing a claim to them is a piece of cake. If the provider comes out and needs some work done, they call TotalProtect to get an approval. TotalProtect then agrees to it and the work gets done.

After purchasing a new home our realtor gifted us a year's worth of home warranty "to help" with our first home buying experience. HMS was described as a friendly customer focused company. Don't be fooled. Friday afternoon in June I call in with a claim for our heat pump, our house wasn't cooling below 84 in the hot TN heat. They promptly sent out a tech, whom I paid the contracted deductible of $70. He took some pictures, described how our unit was older and very dirty. He called it into HMS and said it could go either way. HMS quickly called me and had me send them my home inspection. Within 30 minutes Bobby called me back and denied my claim for lack of maintenance and existing issues. The tech did nothing more, couldn't clean it, couldn't add freon, nothing.
That was the last time I talked to someone helpful at HMS. I have emailed four separate times, called in and waited on hold (for at least 30 minutes) every week for the past four weeks. Haven't been contacted by a supervisor, haven't had in writing why they denied my claim and haven't been provided with any form of customer service. The website clearly states "pre-existing issues, lack of maintenance, HMS has you covered!" WRONG. No follow ups, no service. All of my friends who laughed at me when I told them I had a home warranty, I now have to admit they were right, and that my experience has been just as awful as they said it would be. A month later my house is still uncomfortably hot, my pregnant wife and toddler tell me every day how hot they are, and that the fans just aren't enough. Stay away from HMS. They aren't here to help you. Just get the deductible and run.

My daughter has TotalProtect in her condo and was happy with it. Because of her experience plus our displeasure with our previous home warranty company, we shifted to TotalProtect, and it’s very easy submitting a claim with them. I've done it online and through phone and it’s been very good speaking with their representative. The technicians have been great, very responsible, knowledgeable, and willing to answer my questions. The overall quality of work done has been very good. The only thing is that we have a recall made today with the company that did the pool service work. We’re having a problem with it and I called TotalProtect this morning, and they got on it right away. I’m now waiting for a call from the pool company to come back out on a recall. TotalProtect has done everything that I think they can do, and they’re right on it for me.

We got HMS Home Warranty at the time of closing through our realtor. Most of the time, I filed a claim by email. The call and email experience had been very good and so was the follow-up. The callback was right away too. We always used their recommended vendor and we'd been very satisfied with that. Sometimes, though, there was a little disconnect in the response time from the vendor. We've had both good and bad experiences with that. Sometimes it would be 24 hours, but there was one time wherein we had to wait three days for the vendor to show up. It was a water heater that broke and so we had cold water for three days.
Our latest claim was for our furnace air conditioning system. The technician who came was awesome, very patient, attentive, answered a lot of questions, and couldn't have been better. The only thing is we pay for the warranty and we still had to pay $100 to the technician who came to fix our water heater. He changed something out and was there for five minutes. If he was there for an hour, we would have felt better. But he was very good and we had no issues. Other than that HMS has been very good. We really appreciate not only the good work but the responsiveness. It's a very easy system to use.

We called HMS approximately 5 weeks ago to set up a claim for our a/c unit failing us. I called numerous times just to get a date of when the unit was to be fixed or replaced. The average wait time was over 40 minutes. The representative would say they would check on the progress and call me back. I was told this on 4 occasions. No one called back. Keep in mind the average outside temp was 90 degrees. After 3 weeks into the process they said my situation was in research. One representative of HMS said they was going to replace the whole system. That was wishful thinking.
After almost five weeks I finally got the upstairs air handler fixed today. I spent over $400 for the initial cost and over $500 for the "upgrades" they said was necessary. For about $250 more I could have spent $1200 and had a cool house. Bottom line is if you want extremely long wait times and not very good customer service this company is perfect. It is important to note two more things. All the representatives were nice, but I was not allowed to speak with any supervisor or anyone in research about my situation. According to HMS the company that they chose was late on submitting the claims and information. That information would have been helpful. I could have changed companies and saved time. That company was R and S Heating and cooling out of Corbin Ky.

I heard from a gentleman at my church in 2006 about TotalProtect Home Warranty and became a part of it. I owned a home so have a lot of appliances and for the price, I didn't think it was a bad idea. I had a tough time with the air conditioner for a while, but I got that rectified this year. Now, I'm having a little bad experience with my refrigerator but I don't like to keep calling back because I have to pay the service charge every time I call. I wish they would replace it one day.

A home warranty is the greatest thing. I have highly recommended HMS Home warranty to several people. If they don’t have it, it’s really a great deal because they pay the initial amount. If something goes wrong and it’s a major thing like air conditioning or heat, they pay the deductible, which is cheaper here in Las Vegas than it was in North Carolina. But even still for $75 deductible, I replace my air conditioning, that’s a pretty good deal. Submitting a claim is really pretty easy either online or over the phone. Doing it online is the simplest. When submitting a claim, I call HMS and tell them what I need to be done. Usually, they will either contact the service provider or I call them, but usually they cover that.
The only complaint I have is that sometimes depending on what the service is, when I lived in North Carolina, it seemed to be difficult to find service providers where I was located. Sometimes it took the technicians a while to come, sometimes two or three days. Depending on what the problem is, two or three days might seem like two or three years
I live in Las Vegas now and I have it for my house out here. Of course, I understand that Las Vegas is way different than Myrtle Beach. But the thing is that here I put in a claim, a lot of times they can be here, like if I call in the morning, they’ll be here in the afternoon. So I would say depending on my location, it seems to be sometimes difficult to get somebody to come. Another thing is sometimes after the service providers are there then they have to call the company to tell them what’s wrong and then they get approval to go ahead and fix it or replace it or whatever they got to do. And a lot of the times they called them, and they’re put on hold for 45 minutes, which I think is ridiculous.
On the other hand, the claims reps are usually very courteous and knowledgeable. They try to help and every once in a while I run into one that I can tell that English isn’t their first language, and so they’re difficult to understand. Sometimes that can be a little bit of a problem. I can’t understand them and I don’t know if they’re not understanding me. Sometimes I have to keep repeating things and got to spell things. But the people that have always come, even here in Las Vegas, I always found them to be professional.

I acquired this warranty perhaps naively believing that it would provide security in my first time home ownership experience. I was soon proven to be horribly mistaken. I've utilized the warranty a number of times during the year, mainly during instances of appliance malfunction/degradation, as well as in one particularly protracted instance involving what turned into a hidden, leaking pipe. Every single claim took weeks to resolve, involved no follow-up communication from HMS, nothing less than a 10-15 wait time for routine information, and somehow was marked by repeated rounds of miscommunication by service employees. I would understand if perhaps HMS was functioning well and impacted by issues within their vendor network (after all, that would be difficult to control), however the vendors turned out to be the most proactively communicative side, and they were not contractually obligated to assist.
HMS exhibits a habitual state of segmented communication that is infuriating for a customer who simply wants their project, simple or complex, to be completed. I recognize that different claims involve varying levels of effort, but the silence on behalf of HMS, forcing the customer to devote hours to simply check in on the status of their claim, is by far the worst experience I've ever had with a company that even pretends to feature customer service.
In an unexpected and baffling turn, I actually placed an insurance claim for one of the issues that HMS was "working on," and had the entire claim finalized, cleared, and was actually reimbursed, before a rep from HMS ever got back to me about their portion. I would advise any warranty seekers that value their time to stay as far away from this company as possible, for their own peace of mind. Rarely would I hope for an organization's demise, however I have no idea what value HMS actually adds, so doubt that anyone would miss it.

We received a TotalProtect Home Warranty solicitation in the mail about five years ago and liked the coverage they offered for the price and the things that would be covered at the house such as the air conditioning, heating and plumbing etc. in return for the monthly payment and a deductible if they have to come out to fix something. We’ve had good service ever since, so we’re happy with it. However, it takes a long time to get through to somebody when we call to file a claim but once we're through, they were prompt and professional. They listen and answer my questions then give me the name of the company, their phone number and the claim number. The servicemen that came out did a really good job. When we purchased this house we were also given 2 years of home warranty service through HMS Home Warranty. I have placed about 3 or 4 claims all for insufficient cooling and water leaking from the furnace. Each time they have come it's for the same reason but apparently a different cause. I have had to pay at least 400 dollars in deductibles. Finally the AC company that was servicing us finally said it was enough since he's been out so many times and put in a request to replace the unit. The outside condenser was badly rusted, and after spending 4 days in 84 degree house they decided to only replace the outside condenser.
The house is still not cooling and staying around 80 degrees. I'd call again but I'm sure I'm going to have to spend another 100 dollar deductible for them to just "fix" another issue. I'm so sick of being hot and we have a grumpy, sweaty, 1 year old. In the last 2 weeks alone we've spent $450 to get a new outside AC. That's not including the 2 times before. Such a pointless warranty and isn't saving us any time, hassle, or money. The 2 stars is because they have good customer service, at least friendly people over the phone.

It's been a manageable process submitting a claim with TotalProtect but the problem has been more of the contractors rather than the company itself. They contract with people who are somewhat ** and don't call back and don't respond. So after several days you have to call back to TotalProtect and say, ""Please give me another contractor, this person has not responded."" They don't seem to monitor their people or manage them. Another issue is the procedure. For example, if my AC failed last night, they are supposed to look at it today and then they have to call back TotalProtect to get the approval for repairs. So it's conceivable I'd be several days without air conditioning in 95 degrees and 78% humidity.
But for the most part, service has been satisfactory. I told a co-worker today about them as she's about to buy house and make sure that they have a warranty protection package and carry it on afterwards to cover costs. And I have recommended TotalProtect.

I got TotalProtect Home Warranty and submitting a claim over the phone was pretty easy. The technicians have been very good and competent and I'm satisfied with the quality of work done. The only issue I've had is that the repair done required some dismantling of things that the coverage didn't put back. It only replaced the actual appliance but not any of the peripheral stuff around the outside which I've had to take care of that myself.

HMS service has been great. Their people are fantastic. Submitting a claim is very quick and easy. The rep knew her job proficiently and when I called them then, they came the next day. I was extremely pleased. It was the air conditioner and the tech did the job quickly. It was out of freon so he filled it up. He also checked the vents for the temperature before he left to make sure it was cooling off. I noticed the difference almost immediately and it's been working ever since.

TotalProtect is pretty good. I call because I don’t know how to do things but when I realized that it was a simple thing, I finally stopped paying $75 for something that took five minutes to do that I could’ve done or maybe asked my neighbor to do. But my question is why all of a sudden they went up $25 extra on the cost of the deductible when they saw I had a big claim. The deductible is now $100 so I decided not to take it anymore. They want me to pay money but they don’t want to put out money and then they turn around and want to go up with the deductible.

It was an easy process when I made a claim to TotalProtect over the phone. Every company they sent has been great and so were the people. However, the last person that I needed was a plumber, but the TotalProtect guys that worked with me gave me a company that was not close at all. They were from Georgetown and it took them longer because they had to come a long way. The others have been fairly close vendors, though. Nonetheless, I've been happy with all the wonderful service. They did fine and the work was perfect.
As a widow, I'm just glad to have TotalProtect that I can call on and get somebody that’s qualified to come in. I don’t have to do a lot of research. And also with the finances, I'll not out of pocket a large amount of money when something happens. TotalProtect is great and they have good quality service, quick response, and courteous folks.

Overall, I have had two very frustrating experience. While the review by others might be focused on the saving benefited from having the contract with the TotalProtect, it may be overlooking the frustrating wait time for when you call to make a claim or follow up on a claim, or how they delay your claim hoping that the problem might go away. Based on my experience, it usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hr before I have a conversation with an operator, which is outsourced somewhere oversea.
One of our issues was with a broken indoor pipe that after they assigned a claim number and a contractor, when the contractor showed up on the site, they told him the job was not eligible under our contract. The contractor then asked for our copay of $85, for his service call, suggesting that if we have any problem with the fee contact TotalProtect. I called TotalProtect, and after 45 minutes wait, the operator said let me review your contract, after 5 minutes wait the operator returned and said he is still reviewing our contract. After waiting for another 30 minutes, I decided to hang up. No follow up call, no resolution.
The second case was with our air Conditioning system. In the midst of 100 degree temperature, they kept delaying the part order for the contractor, in spite of being aware that my wife has a respiratory illness. We end up in the emergency room twice because of unhealthy air temperature. Once you talk to them they are very courteous and polite, but often try to delay the repair, very much like a health insurance company.

HMS Home Warranty was one of the options that my realtor gave me. It was easy when I filed a claim online. I got a callback from the contractor within 20 minutes from submitting the claim. He understood what he was doing really well.

We didn't know such a thing existed like TotalProtect Home Warranty until my daughter and her husband got it and had to get their furniture replaced. They told me about their experience. I checked into it and discussed it with my husband and we decided to get one ourselves. We've only used it once since we had it and everything went really well. It was real smooth and no issues.
My husband was here when everything was taken cared of and he was happy with it. Everybody was really nice. They took care of my problem right away. They were on time with the service call. Earlier this week we were reading through the packet and we called them and decided to go ahead and try to add the electronic package on in case anything ever happened. At least, we have peace of mind knowing that we have that if we need it.

I placed my first claim with Total Protect and was so disappointed. My dishwasher broke approximately 3 weeks ago. I placed the claim online and waited... No email confirmation, no call.... I called on a Sunday to check on the status of my claim and I was told that the soonest a repair man could was 5 business days... they called to make an appointment, but the repair shop was not open.. I was told to call back on Monday.. After being on hold for 20 minutes. I called back on Monday.... Set up the appointment for Friday after being on hold for 35 minutes! I meet the repairman at my house.. He gets the beyond smelly water to drain from the dishwasher and then explains that I need a new motor, but that the dishwasher is over 25 years old and manufacturer does not exist anymore.... The repairman calls in to the claims department... After explaining that the dishwasher is at a minimum of 25 years old, the claims department decides to REPAIR it. I speak to claims department and explain that this is ludicrous!!! But there was no dissuading him! They have a part and it should be able to be sent to the repair shop in about two weeks... If I don't want the repair, I can take the repair credit and apply it to a new dishwasher... $187.00 would be the credit... I had to pay a deductible of $125.... essentially... $62.00. I appealed the decision (this took 3 more phone calls and long wait times), which was denied. I have asked multiple times for an explanation and have not been given one.... My last phone call, I asked for a supervisor.... BIG SURPRISE... no one was available.... and the promised call back in 24-48 still hasn't happened.. That was 6 days ago...

Terrible, worthless. We just bought a house and seller provided HMS insurance. On the first day of taking a bath (on the 2 floor) water leaked down from the kitchen ceiling. We placed our claim. Plumber came on 4th of July! We paid 100$ deductible. Despite explaining our problem, he filled the tub and caused even bigger leak from the ceiling and left. He stated that the tub overflow was not installed correctly. We have water dripping when we use master bath on another side of the house which has nothing to do with overflow in a hallway bath. It seems to me that we have a problem with a waste line on the 2nd floor (I am not a plumber but it is obvious).
We spoke with HMS agent who said that this is an improper installation problem by a builder (house is 20 years old!) and they will not cover repair. I asked HMS agent to send us in writing an explanation of our problem (supposedly diagnosed correctly by their plumber) and reason for denial of our claim. He said it may take several days. How we can wait for several days without using bathrooms??? We are calling our plumber now. We wasted 100$ and a lot of time getting in touch with this useless insurance company. Extremely dissatisfied customer. Save your money, time and energy by avoiding this insurance company.

When we got this home, HMS was offered for the first year and we renewed it. Our minor claims have been good, but we had one that we weren’t very happy about at first. That was with our furnace. We heard from different people we know who have the same warranty company that a lot of times HMS would do anything to get out of replacing a furnace and we wound up paying for the furnace. I faxed tons of paperwork to HMS and they called me. It took two months to resolve and it was in the winter. The tech kept us going so we’d have heat in the house. But other than that, we’ve been happy with HMS.
All the people have been wonderful, very courteous, friendly, and helpful. Everybody I talked to on the phone has been nothing but nice. All the techs who had been out here had been awesome too. Submitting claims is really easy. You can do it online or over the phone, and I've done both. Their website is really user-friendly, so it's really easy to submit a claim on. The customer service reps who help you over the phone are really easy to talk to, they walk you through the whole process, and help out with scheduling. In fact, HMS is one of the easiest companies I’ve had to work with when it comes to getting repairs done.
The quality of their work has been really good, and in fact, I just had a warranty repair through Sears. HMS Warranty works with local repair people and they're all A's or better with the Better Business Bureau. We’ve been really happy with it. HMS has very helpful staff and they do reliable and quick work. The only issue we had is when we re-upped, we didn't realize that a water softener was an additional cost. I assumed it was covered under the regular plan with the way the form was laid out when they mailed it to us. We would have paid the extra $25 a year to cover our water softener too because that's the only appliance we have that isn't covered.

My entire experience with TotalProtect has been fulfilling. I bought a home warranty because if my AC unit took a crap I wouldn't have $9000 so I figured it would be easier to pay the monthly premium and then 75 bucks if it does. I went with TotalProtect and never thought about going with anybody else because when I talked to them I was satisfied enough with the information they gave me.
It wasn't too long ago that my AC unit stopped working. So I called TotalProtect during normal hours and chose what options I had to speak to a live person so I could make sure the guy that came out last time took care of it. It was a roundabout way, I had to talk somebody, but they were very helpful and at least I got the person I wanted to come out here. I don’t like having to talk to the robot because then they might give you the first person that’s available. I had an issue with my water heater about a couple of years ago and the guy that came out to fix it was a little prick. We got TotalProtect Home warranty because our property was on the older side so major appliances like an A/C could get costly. The A/C happened to go out 1 month later and the guy came out, looked at it and suggested the WHOLE unit needed to be replaced! A 5,000 dollar expense. We had an independent certified A/C guy come out and he was able to get the unit working for $200 dollars parts and labor together! We knew the unit was in good condition and we were right. It didn't stop there, we have a water leakage in the tub and another "so-called" professional came out and said the wall was not installed properly and was causing the leak and they would not fix it!! What does a wall installation from 20-25 years ago have anything to do with a pipe leakage all of a sudden? We have owned the property for 4 years now and never had this problem until now. My husband and I recently purchased our first home. Unfortunately our AC went out during one of the hottest weeks of the summer thus far. We are covered by HMS Home Warranty company. We placed our claim and an AC repairman was out to look at the unit in two days. The repairman said we needed a new blower motor and control panel. He gave HMS the information the next day with the amount the parts would cost. The repairman recommended that we call HMS daily to "speed the process along", warning us that they would drag their feet and take up to a week to try and locate cheaper parts. This was not an option, the internal temp of our house was 97 degrees and our floors are in the middle of being refinished which has our floor repairman very concerned for warping.
Since the repairman came out, we tried calling HMS a total of seven times, we wait on hold for 15 minutes, and then the phone automatically hangs up. We have never spoken to a real person. I have emailed them twice asking for a time frame of when the AC would be repaired, both times they got back without answering my question saying only, "We are processing your claim and will get back to you when the claim is finalized". At this point, staying at home is health hazard. We are very dissatisfied with the service. Would NOT recommend anyone else to use. I've had TotalProtect Home Warranty for about five years now. I got it to reduce the headache of when something goes wrong. The claims process is easy but the website is not effective because there are a lot of things that I can’t do as their website doesn’t cover all the things. For one, I have TotalProtect Gold which allows me to get service twice a year for my AC and heater system. But when I go to their website, I get a trouble ticket but the service is not for a trouble ticket. So although I prefer to use the web, I skip their website and go straight to them. I've had no problems with their reps and the process works that well.
For my most recent claim, the technician was very good. Unfortunately, he doesn't work for TotalProtect that often so he wasn't sure how to bill me. We also didn’t get some answers as far as if my $75 would go to him and if he'd get the rest from TotalProtect. We dodged through it and hoped it worked. Other than that, it was a good job. The tech discovered some problem I didn’t know I had and fixed it as well on the AC. Now it’s working very well.
There was a time, though, when their technicians had to drive six miles to get to my house. We’re about an hour and a half North of Atlanta, so we’re not that far in the boondocks. I waited a day and didn’t get a call back so I told TotalProtect who did this service back in December when I had the system check and they found them. If I'm in a large city or a populous area it’s not a problem but if I get out of that populous area, TotalProtect's service is not very good in that I have to call and tell them who to call like who was the technician who came last time. That’s a problem. The next time I call, I probably have to explain this again. I thought TotalProtect worked with some of the local vendors in all regions. With TotalProtect, there are improvements that need to be made.

When my dishwasher started leaking they had a handyman service from 50 miles away come. He tightened up a screw underneath. Said that was the problem. I paid him my deductible of $125.00 and he left. It was still leaking so I called TP again. Well, they told me it was a structural problem and this was not covered. I asked what kind of structural problem and they would not say. After many phone calls I finally had a customer service rep tell me there were hairline cracks in my waterline. It seemed like no one there knew what the problem was and would only say structural which I guess this was their way of not paying. I CANCELLED. When the installer came to remove the old dishwasher and install my new, he said there were no hairline fractures in my waterlines. He did not know what was causing the leak but it was not the waterlines. After all the years of paying this company, I could not believe that they did this to me. Evidently, they can say the problem is structural and avoid paying certain claims. Good way out for them. I guess you can consider many, many things "structural." Never again will I pay another home warranty company. Better to save my money and make my own repairs and/or purchases.

We had a situation with either the washer or the dryer and found out that it had a sensor on it that wasn’t working. We ended up having that replaced which was done very quickly. Then we had a problem with our heating system and the guy came out, looked at it, and had to resize. Everybody that was sent out has been really pleasant. From what we had to pay, my husband felt that it was reasonable and everything is running smoothly.

HMS Home Warranty's claim process was super easy, very efficient and fast. Their reps have been very helpful and efficient and I'm definitely recommending the warranty to others because of how quick the process is. Their technicians have been very respectful and a few times they’d send emails and follow up and then they’d talk directly with the actual providers because one of my situations was unique. We needed to replace the old situation because it was related to a water softener that’s out in the country. I'm super busy and I'm gone most of the time, so to have them talk directly is really helpful.

They give you the number and somebody contacts you immediately, so it's fast service. The technician, however, was a little different as he rescheduled multiple times. There was one day where I was basically held hostage for eight hours as he was gonna be there, but he didn't show up. I was frustrated for a while until the thing was finished. I almost called them back and asked for a different person, but he did a fabulous job.

We renewed our home warranty with HMS thinking that what if something major went wrong, like the AC going out, it would be covered. Our AC coil had a leak so it needs to be replace, but the warranty company is saying they will only cover a portion of the AC repair, so our out of pocket would be $900. Our deductible is $100, which we have paid already from the first time the AC repair company came out and didn't fix the problem, a month ago. We kept the home warranty so we wouldn't have to pay a bunch of money out of pocket. Guess that was a huge mistake!!!
Every time we have had to deal with HMS has been a complete joke and have to wait on the phone on hold for 30 plus minutes. If you say you cover an appliance or repair of a home unit then it should be covered. If replacing the coil means replacing the drain line and freon lines that feed the coil, which are leaking too, and are part of the AC system, then it should be covered. Its all part of the AC system.

We thought that rather than the big payout at one time, it might be a little bit more feasible to use a home warranty. We’ve used TotalProtect a couple of times and we’re well satisfied with everything except for the gentleman that was out here for our most recent claim. We live in a rural area, and his machine was unable to print us a receipt. He didn’t feel like going out of his way and going up the road to drive to the top of one of the hills so his machine would work. He left taking the money and without leaving us a receipt. I had to call and talk to the people two or three times to finally get the receipt and everything that I needed. Otherwise, the man's work was fine. We’re not going to quit using TotalProtect because they have plenty of technicians and seem to be reasonably priced. They’re timely, punctual, polite and they've done good work.

The technician was extremely helpful and did it right the first time. What they say they do, they do. If they say they're going to cover our plumbing, it's covered. If they say there's a $50 deductible, it's $50 and there's nothing hidden. They're reliable and I've heard that if you should happen to run into a problem, they'll get it resolved.

Submitting a claim with HMS was pretty user-friendly. In fact, in the last several months, we've unfortunately had to use the warranty. Still, we're fairly pleased this year with the service. It works pretty quick. It was pretty efficient with the claims reps. You call and they get you a number to a local person, and then off you go so it's been relatively painless. For the most part, it was great with the technicians and we're very pleased with them overall. But we had an issue with the dishwasher. The replacement wasn't the same as what was in there, but was only about half the quality of the dishwasher we had. However, the replacement works. It took a while to get it. We were for about a month and a half washing dishes by hands. We did end up paying a deductible or two along the way there.
Also, it took quite a while for the techs to get the problem figured out and to have the claim finally approved. There was a week or two where I was told that I'd hear back and I didn't hear back and then followed up. They were deciding whether to repair or replace the dishwasher. We got little follow-up from the warranty company on how we should fix that piece or how to get it rolling.
We had a trained person come out and tell us that it wasn't a leak or the dishwasher, and then found out later that it was the dishwasher. So, we had a subsequent leak. We have holes in our basement from that leak and on the drywall and the ceiling. At some point, somebody indicated we could submit something and get that fixed but we haven't done it yet. Recently, we had a major drain come out and they did a couple of things and were very responsive and receptive. I really did appreciate their customer service and the timing. They got right out there and did their job. Everything else has been fine and we're considering renewing our warranty which is coming due pretty soon.

We bought our house 10 years ago and we thought it was a good idea to acquire a home warranty. It sounded like a great thing to do at the time. So we looked at a few different providers and liked what TotalProtect had to offer. Their claims process is extremely easy. All I need to do was to call the 1-800 number, then put the number that corresponds with the house and my plan. Afterwards, I'm given to an operator who listens to the problems and immediately gives me somebody in my area who will take care of it. Most of everything is taken cared of within one day.
The only time that we've had a problem was when it was a major heat wave and the contractor was swamped. We told him our daughter has cancer and so he came at 2 o'clock in the morning together with his son. He took care of our problem in 15 minutes. I asked where they were off to at 2 o'clock in the morning and he said, "I've got more stuff to do. I'll probably be working until 5 or 6." He's a wonderful guy. They're dedicated people and I really appreciate it. And then, the only other problem we had that took forever was when we had a refrigerator that died and it took two weeks to get the part. Somebody had the part, yet they wanted the cheapest way to do it. I could have gone up to the parts store which is half a mile away and get that part then they would have put it in, but it wasn't gonna be $75 as it would have been $300 for the compressor and everything else. Anyway, they got it done.
The quality of the work they performed is usually pretty good and there are no problems. We've enjoyed having TotalProtect. When someone has a house with expensive equipment inside, it's always nice to know these could be fixed for less than $100. We do pay a lot of money for the whole year but it's certainly worth it and it's a peace of mind.

They are finding excuses to deny claims. I've had a plumbing issue where the waste pipe broke under a toilet. Even though pipe breakage is covered, they denied it saying that was caused by improper tile repair. What? I never had any tile, and moreover the plumber's report did not mention this at all. Next my two AC units stopped working. HVAC contractor said the coils were leaking on both units and needed to be replaced. TotalProtect says North Carolina code requires that the coil must be replaced together with the condenser, and because this is a code requirement, TotalProtect will not cover the condensers, only the coils (becasue there's an exclusion in the contract for modifications due to code requirements). That is a lie. The condenser should/must be replaced because mismatched coil and condenser will not work well together and may void manufacturer's warranty. The North Carolina code has no such requirement. Therefore, TotalProtect must either cover the condensers, or not replace them. They want to replace them at my expense.

HMS Home Warranty has been super every single time I submit a claim. I found out it's easier to do it online. They get back to you quickly and I'm well-pleased with it. It's almost like my problem is theirs, and that’s unusual in today’s market. Because people usually are, “I don’t care. I don’t have time to talk to you.” I only had one little problem though with one of the technicians. He didn’t quite do the job the way it should have been done. He was the heating and air conditioning guy who had found something that was not wired properly and he hot-wired it. That upset me a little bit, but I called HMS back and he came back out and fixed it. It was a shame I had to call, but he was new in his business and I was happy with the end result.
It was also a little difficult for me at first to find out what I was really covered and what I wasn’t. I had a hot tub out back that I thought was covered in my policy and then I found out it wasn’t. That could have been a little clear and what is broken down on their sheets. And I understand that they can cover the same expenses involved and whatnot, and I didn’t know that going in. It was a little bit hard to read. Other than that, I'm well satisfied. We have had Total protect home warranty for many years, and despite our loyalty, every time we have a claim it is an ordeal. We have two homes covered by them, both next to each other, both owned by my father. I leave in one with my Husband and 4 kids, and My father lives in the other with my mom, and my 80 yr old aunt and 90 yr old grandmother(my dads sister and my mom's mom). We live in NC, summers are pretty harsh. Two years ago my Air conditioner fail, and it took 2 months(may 22nd to July 23rd) to get it fixed, first they were not going to, then they could not get the part because the company did not make them, then it was not covered, then I had to pay for most of it. Finally after going back and forth, we got the air fixed. Last summer, the cooling failed again, they came out and fixed it quickly (two weeks) but could not tell me why the part they had replaced needed more cooling. So that brings me to this year. May 9th we woke up the air, once again not working. I filled a claim. The next day I got a call from a company called Accent Comfort Services, Llc , they could come out the following day between 8-10 am. I asked if they worked on my type of unit, and they said yes. The next day at 9:45am I called to find out why they had not come yet, I was told that they did and that I told them I did not need them. That was not the case, they had gone to the wrong address, so they rescheduled for later that day(making me lose a whole day from work). When he came out, he was very confused and told me they did not work on my system. So he left. I got a called back from my home warranty with another company name, and to call them. So I did, they also did not work on the unit. So I called the warranty company back and was told that Brown service (which was the company that had replace the part two years ago, and worked on it last year) would be available and they would call me. Two days went by, and I did not hear from them. So I called again, the person at total protect I spoke with was very rude, and even said that claims were processed in the ordered received. I told her, a dishwasher does not have the same priority than air conditioner in the summer, she said, "ma'am the temperatures this weekend have been in the upper 70's so I think you are ok" She went on to say that brown service did not have an apt till the following Friday, a week away. I told her I did not have a choice. The following Wednesday I called to see what time they were coming on Friday since I had not gotten a time, and was told they were not scheduled to come. I escalated my complaint to a manager, 35 min on hold, I got a manager and they got brown service out the next day. Brown service was out for about 10 min, said the unit had a problem they did not understand and that they called the manufacturer and when they get a call back they will be back out. Another week goes by and they come back out for 10 minutes( I called 3 times during that week getting a different story every time) said the compressor(part they had replaced 2 yrs ago) was bad again and they would call my home warranty. After calling for 4 consecutive days, I was told by a manager, that they were originally going to replace the condenser, but saw that they had just replaced that two years ago, so that they were asking Brown service to quote a full replacement. I told them I would be willing to replace with a regular unit instead of the Geo thermal if it would be less problem and get the unit replace sooner. On Friday the 3rd, Brown service came out to take measurements. I called the following Monday and was told it was under review, I called again on Tuesday and was told that they were giving me the option of replacing the condenser and I had to pay $205 or they would give me $1800 towards a new unit. I told them $1800 would not even cover half of the replacement and to go ahead and replace condenser. I called Wednesday and was told the part was ordered. I called Friday and was told the part(that two years ago manufacturer did not make any longer) would arrive on the 13th of june. But they did not have a tracking number for me. To make matters worse, temperatures are in the high 90s, and I have a 3 yr old with allergies that has had to camp downstairs because the upstairs if in the low 90s. I have had to initiate every call for an update. I offered them the number and name of the company that installed the system and would know more about it and was told they only deal with their providers. Well, they hire providers that are not reliable, that provide second hand service, and are never available. To top it all, my fathers unit at their home has stop working last night and when he made the call, the earliest they can get Accent Comfort Services, Llc out it Friday, a week of high 90s with a 90 yr old and 80 yr old in the home. Part still not delivered, my air still not fixed and I cannot get them to move any faster. This company claims to Never use deceptive practices to try to deny your claim. Typical replacement: $4,000, and they offered me 1800. I have been very patience and given them the opportunity to resolve this. It took them 3 months to come out and fix my microwave, and its been over a month on my Air conditioner.

We have purchased this warranty protection for at least 11 years. It is now June 13th and we have been going back and forth about out AC since May 27th. They sent the company that they use to repair but we ended up with a bigger mess. That company only checked the outside unit and added freon. Needless to say, that wasn't the problem. The part that's in the attic ruined the ceiling in our garage. They never even checked to see if there was a problem with that part. We called and they came back and said there was a problem that of course was not covered. That company suggested a new unit. DENIED!
We eventually had 2 more companies that we paid to come look at it and they found additional problems. I have contacted Total Protection at least 8 times and have submitted contact information for the second company so that a more reputable company can talk to them about everything going on with the AC unit. The unit is 16 years old and the original installer said they last about 15 years. Nonetheless, the 2nd two HVAC companies are saying it needs to be replaced. My next move is BBB and whatever else I need to do.
I'm not sure if this will ever be taken care of but people need to know that they are not helpful at all. For the 11 years we've paid we could have just saved and replaced ourselves. Oh, and I didn't mention that every person you talk to tells you something different. Our claim was supposed to be in authorization and research on Friday but I call on Monday and the representative tells me it was denied over a week ago. Save yourself the headache and don't use this company.

We had no idea the air conditioning wouldn't work on both levels - it only worked on the top. There are two bedrooms and a full bathroom on the lower level, and the air conditioning on the lower level doesn’t work. It isn’t a basement. We're not happy since they never bothered to tell us, and it wasn’t in any of the information. It was completely frustrating, and when we talked to them a few times, they said they're going to charge us because there was nothing wrong. They said it was never hooked up, so nothing’s broken. Additionally, they said it was $65 at first, and then they sent us a bill for $100.
The guy that came out here to check it was a local air conditioning guy. He felt so bad for us and refused to charge us. The stove was my user error, though. But for the refrigerator-freezer, the tech fixed the fan in the freezer.
A couple of days later it stopped working again, so I had to call back. We didn’t have to pay another copay for that. The guy came back and he said we needed a board. He had to order that. That was Sears that they were working with. It was quite a fiasco because they called us and said that the board wasn't coming yet and it could take 10 to 14 days. They would have to reschedule us and we'd have to call them and see when it got shipped. I kept asking why I needed to do that. But the board came the evening of the day after it was supposed to. I had to call Sears back to send someone out. They sent someone out yesterday and he was as nice as the first guy. He said he got it fixed. He put the board in and it seems to be working now.

TotalProtect was included in my mortgage funding, so I just went with it. Submitting claims was very accurate and timely. I like the fact that they're concerned and that when I have a problem, they would get right on it. The claims reps were great and very courteous. The technician was good. One time I had an issue with the air when it didn't work and he came back out. He said that I can contact him if I'm having any problems. Of course, I have to call TotalProtect if it's pre-existing, but each time, if I had to call back, the techs were real courteous, understood my problem, and got back out.

In eight years, I used TotalProtect maybe three times. The only complaint that I have is the lack of communication when the tech was in my home. After getting the job completed, I had to call TotalProtect three or four times to understand the claim issue and what happened. Nobody called me to tell me about it. But other than that, the techs were fine. I am happy with TotalProtect but they have to improve in communication.

If you ever need to open a few claims TotalProtect will cancel your service and use excuses that they didn't have a form of payment on file, however we've been customers of theirs for years with the same debit card on file that hasn't changed. We had three properties with them and we recently had to file a claim and found out that they cancelled the contract on that home. Now again today, I call them for another property to find out they cancelled that contract as well. Thankfully I have signed up with another warranty service rated higher than TP and planned on cancelling them anyway. I wouldn't ever recommend this company to anyone I know. They are absolutely horrible. And on a last note, they will send contractors out that never come out as scheduled. One time it took almost 2.5 weeks for our air conditioner to get fixed. Their contractors have even tried to over charge us until we complained and asked TotalProtect to find us another servicer to provide a quote. Which saved us nearly 400 dollars. Yet TotalProtect cancelled us shortly after that claim was filed and closed. I will be looking into filing an official complaint with BBB against them for bad business and dishonest business practices. Go to another warranty service is you want to avoid this happening to you.

Submitting a claim with HMS Home was easy and painless. Their reps seemed to understand and were very courteous and prompt with responding to my needs. I was satisfied. I was concerned about my air conditioner since I had just bought my house last August and it wasn't running. The first guy that came out just added Freon to it and said if I continue to have issues with it running, to call again so I did. This time, they sent someone else out and I insisted that they go up in the attic where my unit is. He said everything looked fine up there. So, they got it fixed. The technicians seemed to be very knowledgeable in their field and able to identify and help me with the issues.

We love TotalProtect. We had a similar plan back in Texas and after we moved up here my husband shopped around and said it was the best one he could find. At least 50% of our claims happened after 5 in the afternoon. If he calls it in, he tells them what the problem is and they give us whatever we need, or they contact my husband the next morning to get the process rolling. The quality of work has been very good and the techs have all been good to work with. We’ve had a brand new washer and all we had to pay was the service call. We’ve also had four appliances that have bit the dust and they’ve come out and replaced them. They let us upgrade and we pay the difference to upgrade.

TotalProtect's price was very competitive and it had a broader range of coverage than other plans we'd seen. We called and told them that our disposal quit working and we quickly got a call from a local contractor who received the order to come out and replace the unit. He asked us some questions and gave us a time that he was going to come or he could come the following day. He then came over and within 30 minutes, he put the disposal in and cleaned up after himself. Our house, kitchen floor and cabinet were cleaner after he got through than way before he started. It was a wonderful thing and it made a believer out of us.

The people who come to take care of the problem are wonderful and usually do a heck of a job. But this is the third or fourth time in a year that Total Air fixed the AC. I call them and nobody answers the phone on weekends or holidays and we may not get set up until Monday. It's horrible because we can't stay in the house and we either have to turn around and drive three hours back to our house or go to a hotel. I called several other contractors to see if they work on the weekends and they do. If they can't get anybody and won't approve work on a weekend, I'll start to look for somebody else. The tech was very friendly but took about two days to get down here and when he did, it was 11:30 or 11:00 at night. Then he went down again and it took maybe three days for him to come down here. The first time he came here he said he had a lot of customers. But I found out that that company is Waco which is nearly a hundred miles from where I live, which is in Waxahachie, Texas.
So for the second time he came I told them where this guy lived and that it's kind of ridiculous that he's coming from a hundred miles away. But they said they'd like to use the same people that worked on that unit before because they know what's going on. But it took three days for him to get down here. They just apologized again and said they had a backlog. But that was the only bad experience. They fixed it but it took too long for him to get here and it's unrealistic.

So I got it through them. I've heard people had some bad experiences with the homeowner’s insurance, but I figured that TotalProtect had to be legit if my bank brought them up.
I went through the automatic service, which was very easy, when I filed a claim because it was late at night when I called. It was a 24-hour service and I didn’t have any kind of problem. Even though I didn’t get to speak to a live person, I was asked all the questions. I input the information and they gave me a claim number and the phone number of who to call right away.
The first technician came on a Friday and I didn't really care for his uppity attitude at all. I needed a blower for my air conditioning for the furnace and he didn’t have one. He told me that he would have to go back and see if they had it in the plan. If they did, he will come back. But he didn’t and he didn’t call either. I called with my first claim 4 days ago and they are still looking for a service partner in my area to provide service. I actually had to call to get an update. They are still looking but told me if I find someone I can have them come out and diagnose the problem and call in with problem and all costs for approval. Approval would taken at least an hour which would mean the service company would have to make another trip out. So I have called and waiting for a call back to schedule. From what I have read in other reviews I'm thinking they will be very quick to deny any claim.
Yesterday I called with a second claim. The first HMS Representative I spoke to had absolutely no knowledge of the makeup of a house. I had to spell DUCTWORK for him and then he proceeded to ask if the AC Unit was inside, outside or a window unit. Who has ductwork running from a window unit? I asked to be transferred to someone else that had some knowledge of a house. I was told that he could transfer my call so I ended the called and called back. Second call I was given a service company name & number and claim number. I promptly called them (during normal working hours) and was told they would have to call me back once they talk to someone on how to handle a home warranty claim. Are you kidding, they are in their Network of Service Partners. Oh and I'm still waiting for them to call me back. However, I think I may have fixed that issue myself. $100 saved.
I'm sure a home warranty is well worth getting if they actually cover your claims and can actually get a service partner to even come out. Right now, I'm not a happy customer. It shouldn't be this hard to get service or a claim approved. Gave 1 star only because ZERO isn't an option. If and when, my claims get resolved in my favor I will edit my review but for now this is more painful than going to the dentist.

TotalProtect insured and protected more of my stuff at the house as compared to what I had, although it was double the price. Stuff doesn’t break every month in every household but I’m paying almost $500 a year, and on top of that, if some things were to break, I got to pay $85 for a serviceperson each time they come out. I guess in the long run, maybe once an air-conditioner breaks, $5,000, I’d paid for it already. In a sense, it's probably fair as long as the price doesn't go up.
But surprisingly, submitting a claim to them was real simple. When my appliance broke, I didn't think of calling them because I forgot I had the warranty, so it was about too late. Once he found that it was the second time somebody was down here for the air conditioning, he simply said, “Well, there’s nothing I can do. I’ll put some Freon and then I’ll see." That was the extent of it. I said, "If you put Freon in and it’s a year later, maybe you could find the leak." But he said he'll never find it. He was so unprofessional and didn’t even have a bill. I went to pay him cash and he said I had to give him a check because he didn't have a bill. That work was never completed. He shot a Freon in and he left. When I turn the air-conditioning again I’m probably going to have the same problem. That’ll be the third call ‘cause the AC has a small leak in some place.
The first time a guy came for the air-conditioner, he was very good and spent three or four hours looking for the leak but couldn’t find it. He said they were probably going to replace something in the unit if they can't find the leak. Despite that, he got me up and running. I was happy. Last year, when it got warm, I turned the air-conditioning on and I had no air-conditioning again. When it gets hot, I’ll be calling TotalProtect Home Warranty again. When the next call comes I don’t want the second guy they sent - that is for sure and I will tell them that. They sent a survey online and I filled it out. I said I was very disappointed, but nothing was ever done about it. I feel a little nervous about calling the next time. I've had some good experience and some bad ones with the company. However, I'm not too happy about my second claim regarding the pool. There's been erratic communication. After that, HMS told me they couldn't find another contractor to service the pool. So I found somebody but when I called HMS the next day, they said that they're not ready to do that yet and will continue the search for a few more days. Horrible company. My fiancé and I recently purchased an older home, and an HMS home warranty was provided as part of the purchase agreement. We were very glad we had when on our third day in the house we noticed the main drain stack leading from the second floor bathroom was not draining, and instead water was pouring down the sides of the stack through two stories of the home and down onto the basement floor. We promptly called their customer service number. They were very sympathetic and set up an appointment with a local plumbing company to come out and inspect the problem. The plumber arrived, assessed the problem and concluded that the cast iron pipe that the stack was composed of likely had numerous breaks at various places and would need torn out and replaced with PVC.
This was certainly not what we were hoping to hear after only a few days in the home, but we were glad we had the warranty to help cover the expense. He then mentioned that they had never submitted a claim this large to HMS before, and he would be surprised if they covered it. He took pictures, submitted them to HMS, collected his $85 fee, said good luck and left. I very quickly received a call from HMS denying the claim saying that it was a pre-existing problem. I reminded them that their warranty claimed to cover pre-existing issues, and was told that if I submitted a copy of our home inspection they would review the claim. I promptly did this since our inspection clearly noted that the cast iron drain line was in good serviceable condition. Five days later I finally receive a call back saying that they are still not covering the repair because the inspection report says the drain line was not inspected.
When I point out that it says the main sewer line was not inspected and that this is not referring to the drain stack whose material and condition is clearly listed below their representative begins to tell me I'm incorrect and not reading my own inspection report correctly! At this point I tell him that it's obvious they don't want to cover the repair because of the cost and are looking for some way to legitimize their refusal of coverage. He again tells me I'm misunderstanding my own report and they are well within their rights to refuse this claim. At this point I've had enough, and after a few angry words just hung up.
This company will be happy to sell you their "coverage", but be aware they have no intention of actually covering anything. If you are a homeowner thinking of purchasing a home warranty for peace of mind there may be good companies out there, but these guys aren't one. If you are in the market for a home and the seller offers you a home warranty make sure it's not HMS! You might as well save your money. You'll need it when they deny your claim.

My furnace went out. It was 25 degrees out and HMS people didn't come for four days even though I kept calling. I was getting really irritated. Furthermore, I had to move out because I had two little baby dogs. When they finally did get here, they got the furnace fixed. They didn't fix it very well and a little bit later, it broke again. Again, they didn't get here for two days - this was in November or December.
I file claims over the phone and I have to drag service out of their representatives. The person I talked to a month and a half ago for a hot water tank rupture was not that helpful. But the people who came to work on it were really good. They were able to fix it well and in a very timely manner. When we purchased our house in 2003, TotalProtect was a part of GMAC and we just kept it as the warranty. We’ve been happy with their service. Over the years, there's only been one tech that I requested we not use. But the rest of them have all been good, very professional and got the work done. The only problem I have is when I have an appliance like a refrigerator that needs to be repaired, I hate having to wait, especially over the weekend, until they can find someone and let me know whoever is coming. But, other than that, we haven’t had any problems. Everything worked out fine and we’ve recommended TotalProtect to several people.

When we bought the house, it had the HMS insurance with it for a year (2016). That was the first experience that we've had with any type of home insurance. When the year is up for the insurance in October, we'll decide if we'll continue with HMS. We usually file our claims over the phone and it had been a good experience each time. Our only problem with HMS is that they don't have as many people linked with them here in Wathena, Kansas to come out and do the work.
Still, Sears has been very good at coming out and taking care of the problem. The Sears technician has been very professional and knows what he's doing since he's been doing it for a lot of years. Overall, HMS have sent technicians here three times - two times for my refrigerator and one time it was for my range. At one point, both were out here at the same time, so that was kind of bad. Nevertheless, they took care of the issue. It's been a very positive experience with this company and I recommend them.

Our house is old so we thought it might be a good idea to get a warranty. We looked into several companies and we liked TotalProtect. And since it was through our credit union, we went ahead and signed up with them. Submitting a claim has been an awful process - trying to get through somebody and finding someone to talk to, and always getting people that you cannot understand. My husband has talked to the claims reps and it has been tough for him because he doesn't hear well and then he got someone with an accent. But the tech from Sears has been very pleasant. He did the job as quick as he could and went through the dishwasher, but he couldn't find the problem. It was just one of those things that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and the dishwasher just felt like working while the tech was here. Overall, TotalProtect has been very good to work with. We are very satisfied and we've recommended them to a friend.

My realtor recommended a few home warranty companies, and then I looked through the different policies that she had recommended, and HMS Home Warranty had the best overall coverage. As far as filing a claim, it's a very easy process. I just called and let them know what my issue was, then it took a day or two for them to find somebody. There was also a quick turnaround time for getting everything done. My husband dealt with the technician and didn't have any complaints. The issue hasn't happened again, so I'm satisfied with the work done. As for the cost, the warranty has paid for itself with the first use because the guy who came out said that if we didn't have this warranty, it would've cost $450, which was the cost of the home warranty.

The furnace won’t shut and I had a couple of different people coming. I live here in Mercer and there were all kinds of dealers within 3 to 5 miles. The first time made me mad as TotalProtect brought some guys from New Castle and I wanted to pass them up. Then the last ones from Greenville Comfort were not too bad. They got the furnace shut off but they didn’t cure the problem completely by a long shot and it still looks screwed up as something’s wrong with the thermostat. I don’t think the problem is completely solved and that’s what they're here for.
I was a maintenance man and did this stuff myself so I understand how things go. There’s more wrong with what they took care of although I understand that sometimes things don’t act up when one's there, that stuff's hard to detect at times. So far if I’ll have a problem, I’ll let them know and when I called in, they said that they’ll take care of it in a timely manner and they'll get someone out. What I don’t like is bringing somebody 30 to 40 miles away when there’s a guy within a few miles or 10 miles from me.

I've had a few jobs done by HMS this year and working with them is always nice. They have a very good customer service and submitting a claim was very easy. I had no trouble connecting to an automated system then they gave me a phone number to call for a contractor. The whole process was very simple. As for the technicians, one company sent someone out who didn't understand the HVAC system that I had. This is an old system and they didn't repair this type of system. It was a waste of my time and I had to take another day off from work, so that was a negative.
Eventually, they got a contractor in here who knew how to replace the system. When they came in, one person was very seasoned and the other person was a trainee. There was a problem with the trainee. He turned the water on when it wasn't hooked up so it started flooding my closet and leaked down into my neighbor’s apartment. It wasn't a major leak, but the fact that all that happened was an inconvenience. The thing that saved it was the owner eventually came and showed up and completed the task. Two out of three people who came were very experienced and knew what they were doing.

Back then, it seemed like a good deal to acquire TotalProtect. It's easy to put up a claim though I prefer the old method of calling and talking to a person and discussing which contract they would give. Right now, someone's made the contract and I have to sign it. If I have a problem with the contract, I have to call and speak to a person. But that's the important thing, they give me the contract and it's up to me to contact TotalProtect and have them call a contractor for me. And all went smooth with the techs that came to my home. They come out and handle the problem. The air conditioning, hot water heater, and clothes dryers are going well. The quality of their work is all good.
If you didn’t use your contract, the washing machine and dryers would be handled by Sears or whoever they call there. With the water heater, they sent somebody out to look at it and decided I needed a new one. TotalProtect let me pick one myself and they'll reimburse me, so I got a new water heater myself. I've kept it for all these years because it's been convenient. If I got a problem, I only need to pick up the phone and call. Also, they're on the hook for six months on the same problem. If they don't get the problem right the first time, they keep trying until they get it right which is worthwhile.

Beware of HMS. Do not waste your money on this warranty. We had a hot water heater rupture which resulted in our water into our house needing to be shut off. While we had no water in the house and we were in a hotel... they drag their feet purposely with excuses (& refusing to put a supervisor on the phone). In the end we paid 2 service fees to get estimates for HMS, they continued to stall until we finally paid one of the companies ourselves (verses continue in a hotel). At one point that actually insisted on ordering & shipping a hot water heater versus get one at a local facility. They hold you hostage until you break... this company should not be in business, nor should their business practice be legal.

Technician recommended replacement due to age of water heater and the fact that it was leaking. Warranty company denied claim stating the water heater leak was preexisting. I provided them statement and have offered the statements of my realtor and the feedback of home showings that day to prove that the water heater had not been leaking.
For a warranty company that advertises "protect your budget from unexpected repair or replacement expenses while your home is on the market", they did NOTHING to protect me. The service that they provided on my rental home was good. I haven’t heard any complaints from the tenant. I’m happy and I don’t have a problem recommending them. I thought my washing machine was broken, so I called them. Sears came out and found out that it wasn't the washing machine that was broken but the drain line and it was because of that that the washing machine couldn't pump the water. They had a plumber come out and on the line they encountered a snake and broke something and water came out on the floor. However, they blamed it on someone else that maybe previously worked on the line. They said that it had been repaired before and had not been done properly, and that's what caused it to break. So, they didn't cover it.

Had a clog in my kitchen sink line between the kitchen and my basement utility tub. Called HMS and they sent out a plumber on a Friday who I have used before and has done a good job. He was able to relocate the clog from where it was located to downstream of the utility tub, but was unable to clear the clog from there on using a manual auger. My utility tub backed up, and I was unable to use the kitchen sink or washing machine for the weekend.
HMS took my $100 deductible then said the clog wouldn't be covered because it was below ground level and was caused by a foreign object. I said the clog started above ground, and it hadn't been determined what actually caused the clog (95% sure it was ground up food from the disposal), so they should send out another plumber for a second opinion. They refused, so I called another company myself because I needed the line cleared.
The other company was able to clear the clog using an electrically powered auger. (It was a tough clog, but it was still just an auger that cleared it.) The next day I submitted a dispute with HMS that it should have been covered because the warranty agreement says "clearing of stoppages using standard snake/auger systems" are covered. The automated email response said it would take three weeks to come to a decision, and it ended up taking over two months for them to deny my dispute. Their reasoning was that the second plumber used the electrically powered auger, which he referred to as a "machine" in his report.
Despite this being an argument over semantics as to what a "standard" auger system is, I am extremely disappointed in their lack of empathy / customer service as well as the convoluted procedure to come to a resolution on a dispute such as mine. Needless to say, I definitely DO NOT recommend wasting your $500 on an HMS warranty, and I will definitely not be renewing mine.

It should be warranted by TP since they didn't verify unit information prior to installation, so i'm left holding the bag with having to install an entire HVAC system inside and out since nr-22 is obsolete. I can't get the warranty company to even talk with me about it after multiple attempts to resolve issue. I had a claim maybe a month ago on my air conditioner and it turned out to be a fan up in the attic. The people sent were good. The second time turned into a disaster. I called in because I was having trouble with my water pressure. The technicians came out here and determined that it was the water softener. They said the problem was caused by the hard water going through the water softener and they wouldn’t cover it. But that's the reason for a water softener.
I know a lot of home warranty companies don’t cover certain things especially if it’s customer neglect. But I don’t see how there could be neglect on my water softener. There’s no way I can filter that hard water into a water softener. That’s what it’s for, and I paid extra for the water softener coverage. I’m planning to look somewhere else when I'm done with them this December. I don’t know what good it is to have a warranty that doesn’t cover such issue. The tech also commented that they can sell me a water softener for $2,200. It didn’t leave a good taste in my mouth. I’m very dissatisfied.
