The quality of the vendors that TotalProtect sends is excellent. The vendors are friendly, well-trained, polite, decently dressed people with good attitude and they seem to know what they're doing. I had another home warranty plan, Colonial Home Warranty plan and they were a scam. They said they couldn't fix my stove and they tried on and on and when I switched over to TotalProtect, they sent somebody out and he fixed it. And the same stove broke down again recently and the guy came out and there were just some screws tightening.
Over a few years, I've had a refrigerator repair, whole house air-conditioning repairs, garbage disposal, and gas stove repairs and my experiences have all been positive. They have excellent service and courteous contact persons. Everybody's very friendly and cooperative, as well. A couple of times I called after hours and they took it and then the vendors would call me the next morning to set up the appointment. Other times it was the same day.

When I submit a claim, I call HMS and tell them what the problem is and then they call me and let me know who is going to come out once they find somebody. If there's a part that they have to order, they let me know about it and when they'll be back. Then another company calls me and lets me know when the part's back and when the technician would come. They also let me know the prices, half now and the other half when they come back out or when they finish with doing the work.
So far their work has been beautiful. They do their job, I pay them and they give me a receipt, and that's what I like about HMS. They came for my furnace last year around the time it got cold, and the guy fixed it. I also had a little stoppage in the pipe and they fixed it too. They've been pretty quick with what they do. The only thing I don't like is the $100 deductible, which I wish was a little cheaper but it is what it is. They fix the stuff, so I can't ask for anything else more than that.
We definitely try our best to keep you up to date when you place a claim! Good to know we met your expectations! - Amanda

The previous house owners had TotalProtect and suggested that I use it. It's great submitting a claim with them and I do it on the phone. It's always been good with the claims reps too. The technicians were all wonderful as well. It’d be great though if there’s any updated booklet or information that TotalProtect could send me. I've gotten an update from them once since they changed their name.

I've had HMS Home Warranty since I've owned my home, and that's been over 20 years. They are also our preferred vendor at the real estate company I work for. I have an older home, so to me, it's a peace of mind. I'd rather pay $400, $500 a year than worry about bigger bills and I think there's value to it. I've submitted claims online and in person and I've had several submissions throughout the years. I've had my air-conditioning unit, water heater unit and heating system replaced and a few other minor repairs. My last submission, I couldn't believe how fast HMS reacted and how nice they were. I talked to them right away, and they took care of the problem that day, so it was very quick and efficient. I can only recall one vendor complaining about how they aren't really paid well by the HMS, but other than that, it's been a positive experience for me. I was very impressed.

We own a home and things break down. I thought it was a good idea to get some extra protection and my son-in-law gave me TotalProtect's name. It has paid off. It's easy to submit a claim, although it's a slow process and can't be helped because they have to get the contractor, give me the number, and then I have to call the contractor to set up an appointment so sometimes it takes a couple of days. Whereas if I call the repairman today by myself, he would probably be here today. But it's worthy to me because of the protection.
The people TotalProtect sent over here were okay. I really like the heat and air guy. He was nice, very through and explained to my husband what was going on. The first technician, however, was rude because he was complaining that he didn't know if it was going to be worth his time to come since we live way out in the country and he lives in another town, but he did come and the problem was fixed. TotalProtect is reliable and lives up to what they tell us they are going to do. I am satisfied and have recommended them.

I'm a widow and with only my income, I needed some sort of backup just in case so I got a home warranty. The first time I called in a claim with TotalProtect regarding my furnace, it was the easiest phone call I ever had to make. The rep was very helpful and she told me the coverage that I had. She also told me not to worry about it and that they would find a person in my area, and let them know after she gave me the information. She gave me the name of the company to call and I called them. They called back within a few hours and a technician was out the next day.
The technician was very nice and I warned him that it was an old furnace but he said it was not a problem. He went down, looked at all over and was in and out in less than two hours. It was excellent work. He told me everything that he did, the condition of my furnace and informed me that I needed to have maintenance every year which I have never done. Now I'm hooked with him to do my maintenance on my air conditioner and my furnace every year. He'll be the guy I'll call because he was recommended by TotalProtect. TotalProtect really reassured me that I'm in good hands with what I've got now and that if something happens, they will be there for me. That's very important. When you're on your own taking care of a home, it's not easy. But knowing that I have TotalProtect, I'm very confident and safe if something happens. I would definitely recommend them.

When I went to purchase my home, the seller gave me a one-year contract with HMS and I stayed with them ever since. I filed a claim for a leaky pipe in my ceiling and it was a pretty easy process. The technician was very friendly and he explained to me what the issue was and what he needed to do to fix it. I'm pretty satisfied with the quality of work.

Previously we had required service to a refrigerator that could not be repaired. We had great difficulty getting help with the matter until I posted a negative review on this site explaining the situation. After the review we were contacted by Johnathon a representative of media relations department. Our refrigerator matter was finally resolved and we were extremely happy with the outcome. When our oil burner furnace needed repairs Jonathan was incredibly helpful in managing the situation. His immediate help got us a quick repair and we have had no further issues and kept warm during the extreme weather events we have had in our area since January. We were so greatful for all of his help. Were it not for the Consumer Affairs website enabling consumers to be able to write reviews we might never have reached a positive outcome.

We were contacted by our home loan lender Ocwen and decided at their suggestion to purchase via monthly payments the home warranty program called HMS National. Also called Total Protect Home warranty. On November 4, 2016 when my husband and I were gone on a trip our children called to report the refrigerator had stopped working. After us telling them to do the usual things and no change the kids moved everything from the fridge to garage freezer we had and our travel trailer refrigerator as well as an ice chest. I immediately reported to the home warranty folks. They initially responded quickly with contact to Sears Home repair service and a technician arrived November 9, 2016. That technician ordered a timer and stated refrig was not cooling due to pitted connections and failed T-stat. T-stat not cooling or over cooling.
She researched and indicated the part was most likely no longer available due to the age of our refrigerator. After waiting, with us calling periodically to the 24 hour hotline for home warranty, were told the warranty company had reviewed the notes from Sears tech stating they were unable to locate part needed for repair on November 26, 2016 and they would give us a resolution in 24-48 hours. With no response back from them we called again and were told they were waiting for more complete notes from Sears. She stated SEARS was not specific as to part unable to locate. I told person I had the receipt from SEARS technician and would scan and email the home warranty authorization department. Which I did, and was told the authorization dept would review. She said their people were better at locating hard to find parts than SEARS and would get back to me which she never did.
Once I called my supposed case manager Lynette back she stated the replacement part was being shipped. Once it arrived I was to call them back to have them schedule the repair. The parts arrived, a thermostat and the wiring harness which were installed by the technician. Within 24 hours the refrigerator quit working again which I immediately called the warranty people to report. They once again called Sears and on January 4, 2017 two months after original claim filed the technician reported to us that the warranty people had sent the wrong part and the part needed WR09X-0450 was no longer available as they had reported to us on November 9. The SEARS technician called the home warranty people at HMS National to ask what he was supposed to do. He put me on the line with the individual and we were told once again 24-36 hours to hear back. We were contacted after two days and offered a replacement refrigerator.
We accepted the offer as after going through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with only the use of a garage freezer and travel trailer refrigerator all that time and temperatures below 20 degrees and snow, and my husband and I 70 years old, just physically could not do it anymore. They agreed on a comparable unit, and asked what color we wanted. We stated black as all other appliances in kitchen were black. The unit had to be shipped. Shipping company delivered on January 10. My husband and I were not home. Our son accepted delivery and the refrigerator was installed. When we arrived home the unit was white! I immediately called to report and the representative from HMS National looked in notes and said yes I see you requested black. Shippers will have to return and pick up white model and we will order a black one. After not hearing back we called again the next week.
That representative was extremely rude and stated since the white model had been installed they could not take it back. I asked to speak to her supervisor or someone higher up in the company. The representative stated she would put in a request. It has been 5 days and we have yet to hear from the supervisor. I think waiting for over two months to get resolution for a daily use home appliance was ridiculous and all because the company was trying to not have to replace the refrigerator, searching for parts they were told were no longer available by SEARS November 9, ordering wrong part, delivering wrong color etc. I see from reading other reviews we were not alone in receiving poor customer service.

TotalProtect is a really great company and has a good service. I would highly recommend them. I used to have another home warranty that wasn't worth a damn and I mentioned it to a friend of mine who had TotalProtect. I then contacted TotalProtect and switched over and I've been very happy since then. If I call right now, I would have a claim in 3-5 minutes and I'd know who's the contractor and have his phone number. The contractors immediately get the claim as soon as I get their number. If it's a workday, I can talk to them within just a couple of minutes. I'd normally call them before they call me. Then they'll come out and either fix the problem or get a new one if it can't be fixed. I got a brand new $1000 refrigerator a few months ago because the old one wasn't made anymore and its part was not available. So they're the best.
The techs who come out are very knowledgeable and smart. TotalProtect uses Sears for appliances and Sears has better appliance technicians and service people than anybody. But they also send out people who aren't from Sears. But with the refrigerator, they sent a Sears guy out. I don't know how they go about selecting their contractors, but I have been happy with every contractor and they seem to know their business. They're polite and get the job done quick so I couldn’t ask for more. Overall, TotalProtect does what they say and do it in a polite, speedy manner and they don’t waste my time.

I was gonna cancel HMS Home Warranty because I didn't see any need in it but my wife convinced me to keep it. And you won't believe the things that started happening once we bought this house and kept that warranty on here. We've had troubles with our stove, dishwasher, central air-conditioning unit, furnace and garage door, that's a lot to happen in one short time. We knew that there was a $100 deductible and we thought, "Well, that's pretty high for each of them." But when you have many things go wrong as we did, then all of a sudden it's like, "Whoa, we really came out ahead on this deal." They're losing money on us, trust me.
Everyone has been good, even the ones I didn't like did a good job. I have no complaints about anybody they pick except for the technician who did the central air. He didn't let me know what was going on and had a little bit of a sour attitude. I was a little displeased with it. But other than that, everyone has been courteous and professional. Also, since we've tried them and we know what they're like, we've learned to trust them. And we think they're one of the better, if not the best, home warranty people out there. This company has also been very thorough, very honest and they follow through on everything they said. We are really glad that we kept it.

We were very pleased with HMS. Hector and everybody were very nice. When I reported, a person called me back and gave me the information I needed so the process was quick. On the other hand, I wasn't happy with the person who came to install the unit. They told me that he would spend six to seven hours so I took one of my vacation days. The installer came late and only spent one and a half hours. He also left a mess and didn’t clean. That wasn't professional. In spite of that, my husband and I will renew next year because I really like the treatment and the service that HMS gives to us.

I one of those people who prefer that people show me what they can do rather than they tell me about it. As anything can go wrong, I got TotalProtect. I have to have a plumber and an electrician, and it's going to cost me more than what I'm paying them in premium. With TotalProtect all I have to pay is the $75 service fee and they handle the rest. I had technicians come out twice, and I got good results.
When my dryer of over 15 years that was older than dirt went out, it could not be fixed and had to be replaced which cost more than I paid in annual premium. My premium is $480 a year, but the brand new GE dryer in my laundry room right now is worth over $500. It's still working too. The service tech that came out to look at my old dryer came from Sears service department. He actually got the dryer working again that you could smell the electrical smell, like wires are burning, which was now a safety issue. He was in the laundry room, talking to his people and while he was on the phone TotalProtect called and talked to me at the same time. They were very hands-on on that first experience. When my oven element went out, they sent a technician from Fixx My Appliance out of Conyers, Georgia. They fixed it for me before Thanksgiving and it is working again.
Before the end of next week, I will be renewing my policy with TotalProtect. I have to renew before the 26th. It was paid through my mortgage, but I refinanced my mortgage so that is no longer taking place. I've been satisfied with TotalProtect's services so far. It covers all my major appliances, my electrical, and my plumbing. I have recommended them to my daughter for her home.

We purchased our home in mid-November and moved in early December. Two of the toilets were leaking so I called the warranty company that we had via the closing on the home. They sent someone from a local plumbing company who replaced the insides of the toilet tank and told me they were not sure that the other toilet was covered. Apparently one of the screws holding the toilet down had deteriorated and was no longer holding the toilet to the floor and it was leaking. The technician instead wrote that it was put in wrong rather than stating it had rotted, so of course it was NOT covered. I told him that I had company coming in a few days and he said he would call the next day to let me know if it was going to be covered, but I never got called. Instead I called them and found out that it was not covered due to it "being installed wrong".
I spent $100 for the repair they fixed but it still leaked. They never changed the rubber cover that kept water from dripping into the toilet so I had to drive to Home Depot to get the part and fix it myself, and also had to get someone to repair the toilet they would not cover. I had asked if they could cancel the warranty as I had read that I had 30 days to cancel and was very unhappy with service and they said they would check and call me back and again, they never called so now I am stuck with a worthless contract. I think the only reason these companies stay in business is because of these warranties and they do things as cheaply as possible to reap the most money without regard to the customer. I would never recommend this company to anyone, they are horrible.

Sorry for the lack up update. I was indeed contacted the day after writing this review and the full amount of reimbursement was approved and handed off to whatever team does disbursement.
In late Feb, after 30 days, I asked after the check and got no response.
A few weeks later, I asked more assertively, and receive a response that additional paperwork was necessary. In looking through my spam filter, I did find the original request, dating back to late January.
I provided this paperwork and received the check within 3 days.
Thank you, this issue is resolved.

Saturday, 1/7 - Furnace failed to light Saturday morning, as approaching snow storm hit, with temperatures dropping to 0 deg. Called Saturday Morning, assigned, called vendor. American Services Vendor said too much snow, would come Sunday. Sunday, 1/8 - Vendor was resisting Sunday with 6 inches of snow. I got neighbors to shovel entire road; Vendor showed up: "Old burner, doesn’t know how to work on it. Vendor abandoned call, left no paperwork, and told us verbally that our only option Call Warranty company".
PHONE CONVERSATION with HMS: Jessica: Said the ticket was not flagged as an emergency, which was quite a surprise. Also said there was nothing she could do without waiting another 24 hours. She then escalated to Shea when we stated that was really not acceptable. Shea: Spent over 2 hours trying to get ticket reassigned. She would UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES forgo the 24 hour ‘vendor courtesy’ period to save our home from freezing water and oil pipes, and to maintain habitability.
She wouldn’t even give us an alternate phone number, and stated, no kidding, that she would be happy with the service she provided. She then proceeded to read the exclusions in the contract instead of simply getting us some help. She also said that we’d hear something in the morning, and a manager would call in 24-48 hours. In decades of customer service myself, I’ve never seen anything like it. Monday, 1/9 - Pipes froze as expected. Still no call from HMS or another contractor. Called Woodfin Oil, they fixed in an hour or so. Said we had the most common burner on the market, less than 2 years old, easy to work on. Cost was: $372.71 for the controller, $99 for diagnostic (deductible), $309.51 for additional damage and work cause by icing.Tuesday, 1/10 - Replacement vendor finally calls to confirm appointment that afternoon. We canceled. Still no call from manager, as promised by Shea. PHONE CONVERSATION WITH HMS. Talked to, I believe, Belinda. She attempts to escalate to a supervisor. None available for an hour, she promises a call back. Wednesday, 1/11 - No call back from either Shea or Belinda’s promised managers/supervisors. I had time to type all this right now while sitting on their hold. (Which has NEVER not been under "extraordinary wait times") Amazing.

I then when to my 2nd thermostat and turn it on, now, the system work perfectly, I call Total Protect and let them know what I found out and ask if I can have the technician back for him to check what is going, they refuse and said, because they said I need a new system, they will not sent the technician out again, I said for a second opinion, they said I would have to open a new case and paid the $100 deductible again, I told them, it is like your car have a flat tire, and when you go to repair it, they said you need a new car, this is crazy! Today is Jan 9, 2017 I still have the problem and they refuse to send someone to diagnose the real problem, to me it look like a simple short somewhere. I'm done with them and will change company in the end of the month.

My home was gonna be 30 years old so that's why I got a home warranty and TotalProtect was offered through CitiMortgage, my mortgage company at that time. They built directly through my mortgage so I just added 37 bucks to the mortgage. It was really simple and I didn't have to write another check though now I pay it via automatic withdraw. Submitting a claim is really easy. It's understanding what my part of the billing is when things start being repaired is what the questions always are.
I just got my HVAC downstairs, my air conditioner side replaced. We went ahead and bought the heater side and didn’t wanna have a 30-year-old unit on top of a brand new unit in the house. And we had the compressor outside replaced. TotalProtect said I had to have 50 feet of copper line. I told the tech that they told me it's 10 feet from outside to where the thing’s in the garage, asked why I needed 50 feet and said that that's 695 bucks. The guy told me my line is perfectly good, that they pressure tested it and that he's not gonna replace it, so I won't pay him for that.
It was like I'm having a deal with the repairman. I knew exactly what that repairman's doing and thought was it necessary because TotalProtect said these things are necessary so I asked him if all that was and he said that it was not necessary. So I said that if I had not pointed that out, he would've collected that money. He said he wouldn't but some would and that he won't charge me for what he won't do. It's not a bad thing but was something I didn't expect on the HVAC system.
I've also complained when we got a new washer. TotalProtect sent me to a website that they recommended for me to look and see on there which one I wanted and decided I wanted a Whirlpool. I got on that website, my wife and I looked at one of those big capacity Whirlpools in place. We selected one and it was 614 bucks on the website. Someone then from TotalProtect called and asked if we selected one. I said I did and told her the model number. She then said that it is $944. I then asked how come they sent me to a site that said 614 bucks and then they're gonna charge me a thousand dollars. Also, they're only gonna give me 500 for the replacement of mine and I'm gonna pay the difference. She told me it's because that's the way they do things and I told her to give me the check they're gonna give me and I'll handle it from there.
She said that that's not normally how they do it. And I said that that’s why they're doing it this time and if they got a problem with it to escalate it right to their VP right then. She then said that they'll do it that way. I said that I was not trying to be hard-nosed but they offered me something I was not taking. They also said it was $150 to install. I told them it was here in Tulsa and they're not even 20 miles from me and they're not even five miles from my house from where they said it was at the appliance store. I said no and that I'll get it for gas money.
So my youngest son and I got to spend some time going up North Tulsa. I bought the thing directly from Whirlpool for 614 bucks. And the warehouse guy loaded the washer on with a forklift on the trailer and we strapped it down and pulled it off. It made me happy and didn’t cost me anything. The warehouse even offered me warranty on the thing but I didn’t need it because I got TotalProtect. That was really screwy and strange with the washer.
A couple of the technicians they sent looked shady and dirty but did good work. But some of the repairmen are one-stop shop, though. TotalProtect may need to grow their business and I'm not saying the technicians are bad but I ask myself if these guys are certified or checked out. Because this last guy that installed my HVAC system didn’t do it right. I couldn’t get the cover back on the box that held my filters because he installed it whomperjawed. So when I took the cover off, it sprang. And it's supposed to be a square but now, it's leaning to the left. Then when I had my feet in the utility closet where the unit is, I felt strong air coming out from around the back of the machine. It was really cold and I thought that's my cold air and asked myself why it was going in the garage. I had to call the technician back out. I had to threaten him with a lawsuit and had to call TotalProtect to get to him because he wouldn't answer my phone calls.
TotalProtect is way competitively priced because we were with American Home Shield before which was double the price for what we have with TotalProtect. AHS was 65 bucks a month and we're paying TotalProtect $37.95 now. I'm happy with TotalProtect but one has got to be a wise consumer and it's up to the company to put a valuable transaction in front of me that I value and am willing to pay money.
TotalProtect needs to clarify the offer in their back office after the claim and they're getting ready to dispense money like with our water heater. We got it replaced in 2015 and had to pay for all the new permits but nobody told me that. They just said I owe 400, 300 bucks. So I asked what it was for then finally I got to the right person who said that it's for permits as they had to re-permit the thing. It's okay that they put that on me but to get to the point of knowledge is like pulling teeth. Other than that, I like the service. We've used it a number of times and it's worked out. It's worth having.

We used our home warranty when we started having issues with our furnace mid December. The technician came out and assessed the situation after needing 2 visits to confirm the issue. We needed a replacement of the indoor portion of our furnace but with it being 2 days before Christmas we were aware there would be a wait, which was fine, I understand it's the holidays. We hear nothing until December 30 when my husband calls to see what's going, I mean we had been running our emergency heat at the technician's suggestion for quite a while, it was time for someone to say something.
At this point my husband learns that we will be charged an additional $465 beyond our deductible for uncovered charges, he asks a ton of questions related to any ongoing costs should this not fix the issue but ultimately gives permission to proceed. He is told the parts are ordered and the technician just needs to pick them up. GREAT! Each not so much, roll into January 3rd when the furnace keeps shorting the fuses so we can't run our heat.
January 5th we reach out to HMS and the service company but both are at a loss for who does what, now mind you it's 20 degrees as a daytime temp in Ohio, the nights are in the single digits. So we of course get the runaround about whose fault it was which they ultimately try to blame on my husband. Nope! Not having it. After going round and round I am told that a supervisor will have to pull the call and confirm our account of the story. Here I sit January 6, 24 hours later and not a phone call to speak of in a home that is FREEZING and it's obvious they could care less.

Our hot water heater went out on 12/31/2016, as well as having a leak from the main water line. Was not able to reach anyone on 1/1/2017, despite their claim of 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Finally reached someone on Monday, 1/2/2017. Original vendor assigned to us couldn't come out until Friday. This was not acceptable, we have an infant and already had leaking water and no hater water for 2 days.
Assigned a new vendor who was able to come out on Tuesday. Vendor came out, was unable to fix the hot water heater that day due the part required, suggested a new hot water heater might be best. Vendor was unable to fix the leak, as the claim had been written as the hot water heater had a leak, not the main line as told to the HMS employee. Have to wait for approval for either a new hot water heater or the repairs required to fix the old one. Can't submit a new claim for the water leak until it is removed from the original claim. HMS decides to repair the water heater. They do not cover the cost to access the heater, so we are responsible for another $150, on top of the $100 deductible.
Now it's Friday, our water heater is now leaking, and we still have a water leak. No sense of urgency, we have already missed three days of work waiting on these issues to be fixed, and to top it off the wait time to speak with someone is always a minimum 30 minutes. Then, when I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told there wasn't one available. This is an absolute joke and as soon as the leak and hot water heater are fixed our plan with them will be canceled. I bought a house 5 weeks ago with this so called warranty service. I have had to call 4 times for the same problem (Yea I was sold a lemon). Anyway, I wait each time 20 to 50+ min. Wait 4 to 5 days for service and the same problem is still happening. By the way I live in Ohio. It’s December and January and have little or no heat. Wish I had been able to choose my warranty co, but obviously I didn't. Funny when I complained. They called me everyday when I went outside their options and thought it was fixed. Another cold front here and guess what - I and my handicapped daughter with a BAD HEART are without heat and on the phone for 55 min waiting for no help AGAIN!!!

It's really easy to submit a claim to HMS through the internet with a turnaround of less than an hour. Once, I was in a bit of trouble with one of the contractors because they keep getting the wrong part and so the equipment still has not been fixed. It's been over a month. It's a problem with the heater so with this cold weather, it's important. But the other technicians have been great.

I have TotalProtect for so many years. I usually submit my claim over the phone and it normally works very well. However, the last time was kind of a big comedy. The rep gave me a phone number to call and it was to a plumbing place. I told her it's a stove oven issue and she said that's who I should call so I did thinking they've gotten into some other line of business in addition to plumbing and heating. But they haven't so I had to call back and get a different number. It ended up being Sears I should have been calling. But overall, I've had excellent customer service from the TotalProtect people, that's why I keep them. They're efficient and professional.
And the people that they do business with that actually come out and make the repairs have been phenomenally wonderful and very personable. I've had people work on the washer, dryer and furnace and they were awesome and very good. Most of the time it's been Sears except for the furnace, but the ones who came were very careful about taking off their shoes, picking up their equipment and cleaning up after themselves. But for this last time, the guy that did the oven left a frigging mess.

Submitting a claim with TotalProtect has been great. I either go online or call and they give me the number of the vendor. Then they usually call me or I call them and they make an appointment. They are usually here very timely and do their job. My experience has always been very satisfactory. As a matter of fact, one time I had an issue with my microwave and they couldn't do anything about it so they replaced the whole thing and that was great. I've recommended TotalProtect to a friend and have bought the warranty for my mother.

The real problem comes with all the disclaimers about what is actually covered on each repair. I found out even though things are covered, they may not be completely covered. So here is where things get really bad. I called to update my plan and once I finally got someone on the phone, they changed the plan and continued to charge me for the new and old plan. I stayed on hold for hours and days trying to get this corrected. All was good until I sold a home and tried to cancel the policy. Again, on hold for over 1 hour to cancel. Said it was done and even got a confirm number. Today I saw a charge on my credit card again for the cancelled policy. Again, sat on hold for over 1 hour to be told nothing was done and that I needed to be transfered. I had to sit on hold all over again. Every time I asked for a manager, they ALWAYS refused. It seems they play the same game and just refuse to stop charging you. At this point I am now hoping they cancelled both policies. To be safe I am telling my credit card to refuse all charges from them.

Very inconsistent and highly unaccountable. Most problems are outside the scope of coverage so don't bother using their service. We had their premium plan and it barely covers anything. I currently have a broken heater that a technician looked at 10 days ago and 'ordered parts for'. We haven't heard from him since despite numerous efforts to reach him. To top it all, Total Protect just informed us that the failure wasn't covered after we called Total Protect ourselves.

Received a call at 8:30 am from HMS warranty that we will be contacted within 1-2 business days. No one ever called. Called them yesterday, Tuesday, Dec. 27 and was told our claim was still in research and no decision has been made yet but I should hear something in a day or so. Called this afternoon and was told our claim got lost! Won't hear for another few days. Seriously!!! We have 4 teenagers in sports and no washing machine for 2 weeks. Very poor service with no sense of urgency to get our problem resolved. I would never recommend this service and will not be renewing.

It provided overall coverage that I need and the pricing was competitive. So I thought I'd give it a shot. So far, everything has worked well. We’ve submitted two claims. It was easy to do online. The follow up was quick and I've been happy with both of the providers that they sent out. Both of them have been very good and thorough. Sears was the first one and then, Wave Plumbing was the second. Both were great. I'm very happy with the work. The young man that called to go over the second claim details was absolutely wonderful. He went above and beyond in explaining everything, looking at options for us to save cost, because the pieces that were not covered on the repair were pretty costly. So he gave us some input on that and really helped and that's very different.

HMS Home Warranty was given to us for 12 months for free in the sale of the home. Most of the time, submitting a claim has been great. However, one time, the contractor took a little bit of time. One winter, our furnace went out and it happened when the temperature was 1 degree and was dropping down to -20. They had to get it approved and a part wasn’t available. Then they had to order it and it was shipped in. So we went three days with no heat in this house. It was tough. Then the guy that put the furnace in and took everything out put the unit back together backwards. So when I called and got someone else to come out, they were able to see that it was done backwards and they had to fix it. So I just had one real experience with one bad situation. I had been paying monthly premiums on this plan for years. My water heater stopped working and I called. They gave me the name of an outfit who could not even come out to look at it for four days. When the technician told them it needed to be replaced, "Total Protect Gold" told me I had to wait until they ordered it which would then be shipped to this small contractor, and the contractor said it sometimes takes this warranty company a long time to order and ship replacement parts or appliances. In addition to my $100 deductible "Total Protect" told me I had to pay for additional cost to install it, (over $230) and they would not give me an estimate as to when I could expect to have fixed, as they didn't consider being without hot water an emergency. I explained I was a senior citizen and ill and all they kept saying was it was not an emergency. I am still without hot water, no estimated date of repair, no answers at all. This company took many years of premium, no concern about health, horrible customer service. They seem to want to avoid paying legitimate claim. Completely misleading advertising. I would advise other senior citizens to think twice before paying this company high premiums for horrible customer and bad claims service. They do not care about seniors, and when you do have a claim they do not respond promptly. It appears to take advantage of people, collect the premiums and then work with low service contractors.

If we had a major problem with my home and my mother-in-law's house, we wouldn't be able to come up with $4,000. When I got the advertisement from TotalProtect, I thought about trying it out. When my mom told me that she had some issues with her stove, I told her that I didn't want her to worry about anything else so I was going to take up TotalProtect for her house, my mother-in-law's house, and my house. I'm 65 and I needed to know that we had some protection on these three houses.
When TotalProtect called me, I really tried to question them like "If I give you $50 now and something breaks down and you put me a new refrigerator in, and then I don't pay you anymore, what happens?" I was told that they have systems in place for people that do that. Their rep explained all the details to me and I've been with them for two years now. I just filed the first claim and that was at my mother's house. My mom got a new stove and a new water heater. Everything was wonderful.
For the water heater, my daughter called TotalProtect and told them what was going on. The next day, I got a call and the people with the water heater came out, looked at it, and took the numbers down. Two days later, they came out and put a brand new water heater in and took the old one away. It was great. I read that the warranty was for six months. With the stove, it's about 40 years old. The technicians came out and they said they can't fix it. They were going to get a new stove which was awesome. I paid that $125 deductible and that was it. I love TotalProtect and it's been wonderful for me. It's the best and I'm glad that they found me. I have also told people about TotalProtect.

The real estate agent who helped us buy our home had known about HMS, and used them, and had an account with them herself for her own home. She became a friend of ours and by the time we bought the house, she said that if we're not gonna buy this policy, she's gonna buy it for us. So if she believed that strongly in it, I'll buy it. We've been in it ever since. We've used HMS for a whole variety of things and they’ve been great. We used to submit claims over the phone, but now we do it online. Then they give us the name of the company and a phone number. I call them and then schedule an appointment with them.
The contractors have been very responsive as well. With the latest claim, we had a clogged-up sink that I thought I could clean out and couldn’t. So the tech came and tried to clean it out with a snake and he couldn’t get it, so he had to go under the house and cut pipes apart. He was here for hours and got the clog cleared. They’ve all been good. Every year, I tell my wife that we don’t need to renew this and she would disagree and just about every year, we use it for something, so we're good.

The first time we used HMS, we didn't like the company that they picked but we were stuck with it. The air conditioner went out and they sent a technician out here. They fixed the AC but it went out again so we had to call them back. We asked HMS if they could give us somebody else and they told us we would have to pay for a second service call. During that time, we should've been put in an emergency status because it was 95 degrees in the house all the time and we had to buy a window unit. I went up the ranks with them and asked if somebody would pay me back the window unit. The manager called me back the next day and said they couldn't pay for it.
There was a paperwork issue, too. The company said they didn't have anything from HMS and HMS said they'd already sent the paperwork, so it pushed the claim back a few days. On both times, the contractor said they couldn't get out and see us until Monday but I told them I'm a lawyer and that got them. HMS should've found us somebody else when those technicians weren't available to come out immediately.
Also, my debit card got compromised but I can't go in and change my payment online. When I called to update the payment info, I back paid because they said I missed the payment throughout. Two days later, my husband called to schedule a plumber to come out when our shower broke and they said we weren't active anymore. Luckily, I wrote the confirmation number and told them we have it.
Once we got through it and got a new air conditioner, we renewed our policy with them. We stuck with HMS because I wasn’t sure if we were allowed to go somewhere to buy a new policy. Then I started doing some research and HMS was the better deal out of all the ones that I could find. A local company doesn’t cover as much as HMS did but they have a less expensive service call rate or copay and they will come out and do two service calls or maintenance calls a year as part of their plan but when they do, it's usually something not covered.

When he found the capacitor wasn't the problem it was the motor he said the store had to order it and took our 100 dollar deductible and left. The store had the blower motor in stock because I called. These people just wanna sell you something. They told us they wouldn't replace the blower motor because that might not be the only problem. It's a pretty easy process submitting a claim with HMS. They're fine as a company, but I've had to change contractors from time to time because of either a misdiagnosis of a problem or a scheduling issue where a plumber can't get here to one who just flat won't come out here anymore because I've had so many problems and he got pissed off at people telling him what the problem was, and he just walked off the job.
I feel like I'm always having to change contractors, although I'm actually not very difficult to please. We have a 952 unit development and my maintenance people love working with me because I'm nice to them. It's a community of over 55 year old people and you get some of these 75 to 80 year olds, and they get a little cantankerous. When a job comes over and it's at my place, the contractors fight over who's going to get it.
I have learned to never try to call HMS on a Monday because I will be put on hold for an interminable amount of time. The reps are great, but they don't know where everybody is geographically. These people sign up as contractors under HMS, but they don't want to come because it's out of their area. I'll get assigned to a job and the contractor will call me and say, "Oh, no, that's too far. I don't come down there,” and I'm like, "You're 20 minutes away. What are you talking about that you don't come here?" The contractors are very challenging.
I had an HVAC company that was assigned to come and they said they would be here between 7:00 and 7:30. But at 7:50 they weren't here, so I called the front gate and said, "Don't let them in. They're late and I have stuff to do." I left them a message for them and said, "Please call me. I'm sorry that 7:50 is not 7:00 or 7:30,” and they dropped the claim because they said I wouldn't let them in.
I had a problem with the plumbing from the minute I had moved in here. I've had three different plumbers try to fix my toilet. I kept telling them to replace the unit on the inside of the tank, but they'd tell me that I don't need it and just need a new gasket, and then they'll be back. I just had the guy here last week and he said, "Oh, no, I just had to fix the chain." Then they come in, do a quick fix, and leave. They're so in and out of here. It's like they're putting a Band-Aid on a bleeding carotid. The tech said, "I just had to turn it this way," and I'm like, "Fix the damn unit. Just replace it." I don't know if it's cheaper to buy a whole new toilet or just have the whole interior replaced, but I'm convinced that the inner workings of the tank needs to be replaced.
The toilet has never worked right and I told HMS I should get a whole new toilet. I was even going to pay for it and have them fix it. The HMS rep said, "Let's see what the guy says when he comes back out," but I haven't gotten a phone call yet for him to come back out because they don't want to come out here for only a little job.
The contractors must have pre-negotiated rates with HMS, sort of like Medicare. For example, if a Medicare patient goes to a doctor and the fee is $100, they will have a negotiated price with Medicare that says, "We're not gonna pay $100. We'll pay $70." And then Medicare pays $60 of it and the other $10 is done through the settlement. The patient has to share the cost of what's left over. If $10 is left over, the patient pays $5 and they pay $5.
The plumbers might have lowered their rates to get more warranty work, like if a job would've cost $200 but they negotiated a price of $150 for that job. If that's their system, then that would explain why the contractors are not in any hurry to get out here for an HMS problem versus a regular problem.
When I first bought the warranty program, they said, "We'll fix this, this, this. We cover air conditioners and your refrigerator. We cover this. We cover that." However, there have been two instances where I had a contractor come out when my air conditioner wasn’t working, and they said it's my coils that need to be cleaned and they don't cover that, and they wanted to charge me hundreds of dollars to clean the coils. So, even if I'm covered for certain units, I don't know the specifics of the coverage, and I'm so confused. I was basically told that they cover every unit or device that they list, but not in its entirety. With a Sears appliance, for example, I was told, "We don't really cover this, but let me see if I can fix this and it will help the problem.”

The home I purchased came with a 1 year HMS Home Warranty with $100 deductible. My hot water tank started leaking so I immediately called HMS. They were very responsive and provide a service provider and claim number. I called the service provider and they dispatched someone the very next day. The service guy said the hot water heater could not be repaired so he would have to call HMS for approval to replace it. HMS called me and said that I would be responsible for $800 of the total cost plus $100 deductible. It's a 40 gallon, nothing fancy water heater. I was told they did not cover parts such as ball valve, drip pain, haul away. The company that they sent wanted to charge $225 for an expansion tank which there is no expansion tank currently so why would one be needed now, $125 for a 10 drip pan, $175 for a $20 ball valve and 100 haul away fee. Not to mention, another $100 deductible because the service could not be completed in one trip.
This is the company that HMS said I had to use so why the outrageous price? Basically all the warranty covers is the water heater itself and labor. I was told that I could purchase the hot water heater myself and offered a credit of $600 provided that I would have to have a licensed plumber install it. Well that's fine, but I would still have to pay for the labor. I feel the warranty HMS sells is a scheme. It should be called a discount program, not a warranty program.

I’ve had many experiences with HMS where some were good and some were terrible. And it’s been difficult submitting a claim with them. They don't have service during weekends and they have assigned me to people who took three to four weeks to come. Because of that, I have lost food from my unrepaired refrigerator. I had to go out and buy myself a small little refrigerator one time and there is no emergency coverage or reimbursement for what I have to go through. But I’d still recommend HMS because they eventually fixed the stuff.

TotalProtect has been terrific. I'm happy in the way they handle stuff promptly, no hassles. Their claims representatives are most courteous and respectful. As soon as I called, told them what the problem was they have a good follow up. The technician the first time was a little bit of a problem because he was quite upset. When he was finished he said, "That's all I can do. It's a piece of junk." He went upstairs and walked out the door. But we got a new furnace in the process and when the technician came out again a second time to do it he was much better and he was much more polite. They, to me, went beyond what I thought they would normally have done. They hooked everything up right, and they worked hard. Also when it was a dire situation where the furnace wouldn't go on and we were freezing cold, a guy came out within a couple of hours. Overall, they are efficient, respectful, knowledgeable, and courteous. We'd refer them.

I had a bad experience with the home warranty provider that came with the house but I liked the concept of a home warranty. We got several offers from several different companies and I picked TotalProtect Gold from the literature they sent to us. I was impressed that they were right upfront with what they would cover, what they wouldn’t, and what it cost, so we decided to try them because of their integrity. When I submit a claim, I call them and they take my basic information and then I get a call from a contractor within a few hours or sometimes the next day. It's good to go from there because the contractor comes, fixes the problem, I pay them the deductible and everybody’s happy.
I’ve never had a claims representative who was disagreeable. They are professional and sometimes very pleasant. The techs who come out are always very pleasant. The guy who came to replace our oven was wonderful and very professional. Another guy replaced our garbage disposal and he was nice. We had a guy come out to replace the water heater under the warranty that's not TotalProtect Gold and he was a little bit iffy, wasn’t the nicest guy, and left a mess behind him. When filing a claim online, they don't give enough options to tell what the problem was like when my kitchen sink was clogged recently and that's something that's covered, but there's no way to put that in. I had to put it as a disposal problem, but it didn't have anything to do with a disposal. Also there were things that they don't cover. Recently, I had a dripping shower and it turned out the problem was with the pipes. Keisha, the representative that was in contact with me, was very good. She kept in touch with me throughout the whole process and made sure that I knew every step of the way.

I have been a member for over 15 yrs with this company. On 10/2/16 I reported to Total Protect that my dryer was not operating. They provided me with a company. The company came out and informed me that I needed a fuse that need to be ordered. It took 2 1/2 weeks for the part to come in. When the company came to install the part I was told by the technician that he had the wrong part and had to reorder and return. After repeated phone calls I never heard back from the company so I reported it back to TP. TP made numerous phone call attempts and was also unsuccessful reaching the company I was told that it was nothing they could do until the company returned their calls but they saw that the part had been reordered. In the meantime since I really need my dryer I personally contacted another company and had to pay $50 for that service visit. I waited another 3 weeks and didn't here back from TP or the company that they recommended. After contacting TP asking for a supv. and begging to have my claim referred to another company they finally recommended someone else. The second company has been very responsive but can't seem to find out whats wrong with the dryer. He has replaced the fuse several times only for it to continue to blow. He recommended that I get my dryer vents cleaned and $385 later the fuse still blows and the dryer hose wasn't even attached to the dryer when turning it on so wrong solution. Recently I called TP and asked what the next steps were and was told to call the company back and have them re-asses because obviously its not the fuse. Well I stood there and watched him test everything... still no clue what's wrong with the dryer. And if it's something other than the fuse I was told by TP that I have to pay another $75 service fee. It has now been 2 mths and I still don't have a fixed dryer or a replacement but TP continues to get $49 from me each month on time. These type of insurance companies make sure that you never have the option of replacing your appliance if it can't be fixed. ALL Insurance companies are rip offs. They take your monthly payment and then don't want to provide you services I have only had to use their services 3 times in the 15+yrs that I've paid the premium. You are better off finding a reliable, reasonable handy man and just paying out of pocket to have your home appliances fixed.

Their claims representative are always pleasant. One time though I had this lady who had such an attitude that I just hung up and called somebody else.

I'm happy we have TotalProtect because our house is full of appliances so it's definitely worth it for us. Instead of looking in the phone book or going on the internet, looking for somebody local to repair things, we have that to fall back on. I've used them a lot. I've had my washing machine and my dishwasher done. I have two refrigerators serviced. Whenever I submit a claim, I'll get one of the representatives and she'll put me on hold, "Let me see if I can get somebody for you. Okay. Here's a number just in case." And they'll give me the day and the time, work it out and I've had no problems.
The technicians were fine too but it's funny because the last time they did my dishwasher when it was leaking, it wound up being the motor and the technician had to come back twice because it was making too much noise and I was like, "I don't know why they just didn't replace it." But they came back right away. We're happy with TotalProtect and I recommend them.

We’ve been very satisfied with TotalProtect over the years that we’ve had them except with one claim which was a nightmare. This was regarding our air conditioning unit. What happened was so bad that it more than offset any good that’s happened and causing me to rethink staying with them. TotalProtect approved the replacement of the air condition unit but they sent an unlicensed company from 40 miles away and got no permit for the job to install the new unit.
This unlicensed company still installed the new air conditioner, and as a result, I now have an illegal installation and will have to pay somebody to reinstall it. Plus I was unable to get the information on the unit to register the warranty. And if I complain to the county, I’m going to be charged $80 for a permit. The installer also charged me for things he didn't even do. They charged $75 on the bill for a new line set and $20 for drain in line modification. It cost me $500 or $600 out of pocket.
It was fraud. And my disappointment with TotalProtect was they didn't side with me. The job was not completed and TotalProtect made no effort to do anything with the installer. I expected more from them besides approving the new equipment. They're supposed to pick up the phone and call the installer to go back and make the job right and they did nothing. When I called them, I got handed off from the call taker to supervisors. I got plenty of lip service from them about this whole issue. They’re nice and pleasant but nothing gets accomplished. They've been totally unresponsive.
It was a tough experience considering that I'm mid to late 60s and my wife and I went in the heat of the summer at 107 degrees for almost three weeks without air conditioner. We have had another contractor before who's local and we had nothing but good to say about them. TotalProtect needs to terminate their relationship with the unlicensed contractor they sent us for the air conditioner.

My first claim with HMS Home Warranty was the best experience ever. I called in because my pool wasn’t working and a few minutes later a vendor called me up and asked me what I thought was wrong with it. I told him it was the pump. He asked me what type of pump it was, came out a day or two later, replaced the pump, and the pool worked fine. They filed the claim, I paid my $50 deductible, everybody was happy and it was done in three days from start to finish.
Now my current claim is the exact opposite of that experience. My refrigerator, which is little more important than the pump on my pool, quit working and we called it in November 28th. They came out Friday, around five days later to see what was wrong with it. They hadn’t called us other than the scheduled appointment. My girlfriend was home at the time the techs came out and they told her that they needed to order some parts. They also said they were going to fix the fridge on the 20th of December. Then yesterday, my girlfriend was talking to them and didn’t get anywhere. So she gave me the information and I called and asked the rep what their KPI or time to repair the fridge is. They told me it's three to six days which we've already passed. The rep also told me that if the parts don't come in today, then they will escalate the claim.
In this point in time, they’ve given me no option. Luckily I have three fridges in my house. But if I only had one fridge and it was broken on 11-28, I would be highly unhappy sitting here on the 6th of December without a resolution. My only disappointment in this process is I would like to know where the limits are. The fridge was bought new with the house and I don’t know what's wrong with it. They could've told me the price of the repair and when they will repair it. Information like that would’ve made the process go very well. The first experience I had with them was fantastic and I was so pleased. If this claim is resolved, I'll re-up my warranty at the end of the year. If it isn't resolved timely or to my satisfaction, then I will go to a different company. But I have faith that at this point in time it’s going to get fixed.

Terrible service is an understatement. We returned from vacation on Thursday night to a furnace that was not working. Called HMS and was assigned a vendor that could not come out until the following week. Obviously this would not work since it is December in Chicago, no heat is a huge problem. I called them back and they reassigned to a vendor who could come out the next day. The vendor came and said we needed a part and that he could replace it the next day.
The next day we get notification that HMS has made the decision that the vendor cannot make the purchase and they need to order it - no timeline given. I have called multiple times and each time HMS tells me they don't know the timeline. The customer service agents can only tell you what is on their screen - for any additional information you have to speak to a supervisor... which I am repeatedly told is not available (I am sure dealing with all of the other complaints from other dissatisfied customers).
My family of 5 is now on day 3 of no heat, and no specific plan for replacement. We are out the deductible which we paid to the vendor they sent but did not complete the repair because they would not authorize him to and another $300 in electric blankets and space heaters to try to get through. Still no call back from a supervisor and still no timeline for replacement. Shortly we will need to call our own vendor, but have been told if we do so they will not reimburse us for the deductible we have already paid for this. The most frustrating part is that the vendor was able to get the part and complete the repair, but HMS blocked it to save a few dollars by purchasing themselves, leaving our family without heat for an unknown amount of time. No one seems to be able to tell us when/if the part is coming. I am astounded at the horrible service and would NOT recommend HMS to ANYONE looking to purchase a home warranty.

Getting a home warranty is a smart thing to do. I would have done it regardless because it's just like car insurance or life insurance or health insurance. You have your problems, especially with a house with appliances. And so we were with TotalProtect since we did the original mortgage of our house. It was part of the mortgage. Until three months ago, it was deducted out of escrow and out of the mortgage payment, and then Bank of America spun it off by itself. So now, the TotalProtect comes out separately out of my checking account.
We contacted them earlier in the year because we had problems with the ice maker on our refrigerator. At the same time, I had surgery and I knew I couldn't do anything about it. My wife depended on the ice because she takes it with her to work to keep stuff cold during the day. When I went and checked, I was sort of surprised to find out that everything else was covered but the ice maker wasn't. So I had to do that myself.
The water heater claim was pretty good because they put me in touch with a plumber to check it out. The water heater at that point was 15 years old. It was there when we bought the house. TotalProtect did not have somebody to cover the plumbing locally. I had to go to the next city up which is 15 miles away. The plumber that came out said that he could try to force the issue now but he thought that I can get by a little bit longer. Well, then the problem was highlighted by the fact that I cannot get down to the basement because of knee replacement surgery. My son who flew from Virginia came in and looked at it. He said that the thing is getting in pretty bad shape and it needed not to explode. And so I contacted TotalProtect and they said to go back to the original plumber, whatever is estimated.
The paperwork was handled and done over the internet and the service on replacing it was timely and trustworthy. They went ahead and took care of it. I felt that the person who did the work was very thorough. I have not been able to check out the work because I can't get downstairs but it's functioning very well and it was handled excellently. Then once they processed the claim, the check came within the time that they told me it would. So it was a good experience and I was pretty pleased. Then I have to make sure that the furnace is working good as my wife is diabetic and so I had it inspected as well. I'm very satisfied and I wouldn't need to go anywhere else.

I file my claims online and that works well. However when I first signed on, HMS said if I pay $100 extra, my deductible would be $50. I tried to renew that but they said they don't do that anymore. Also, they provide decent service sometimes, however I feel like the contractor just puts a band-aid on the issue. Sometimes I have things fixed in the house but then two weeks later, they're broken again then I have call to reopen the claim with HMS.
Trying to get the call through takes 45 minutes, so it's a bit of a hassle, whereas with my previous home warranty company, I could go online and reopen the case. HMS also have to transfer me and the call ends up being disconnected every time. So it will be a little more convenient if I could just go online and reopen the case when the contractor doesn't do it right the first time. But their claims reps have been pretty decent. Although sometimes, I think they tell me things to make me happy, what they think I want to hear, but then, it's not valid at all.
For example, I had a problem with a contractor with my previous home warranty. Before I signed up to HMS, I told them the story and asked them to block that contractor from being on my list as I don't want them to ever come up. The HMS rep agreed, but when I had a plumbing issue, HMS called that contractor first! I called HMS and waited in line only to be told that I had to have a bad experience with the contractor while I'm with HMS so they can block that contractor. HMS also told us that I can block the contractor through a prompt or output that's on my file. But in the end, that contractor still did the work on the water heater for me. They did an OK job this time but then there were all those hidden fees. I never had any hidden fees with any claim before. The contractor even told me point-blank that they didn't stand behind their work so I wondered why the warranty company works with them.
I was really nervous using that contractor. When their technicians came, I check them in and get them all situated. I talked to HMS and the contractor company as to whether I could leave them and come back. It was no problem to them if I do that, but I do not trust these people in my home. The technicians left the hot water heater here. First, they said that they'd dispose of it but when they got here, they said it would cost another $60. I told them that I'll get the heater up myself since they don't care to carry it up the stairs for me. My whole basement was flooded when they left because they burst one of my pipes in an accident. The technician tried to clean it up, but then in the end he didn't. Everything was wet and I had to clean up all the water.

When we built our house, I wanted to get a warranty to have extra security. We went with TotalProtect and we've been with them for a while now. I never had a problem with them with submitting a claim. TotalProtect has always been good. But I've had issues with the companies that they attach me to, like Sears. Sears fixes all our appliances, and I had a problem with them because they were supposed to fix our microwave and the guy comes out and says they had to order a part. It took another two weeks before the part was sent to our house, and then it took another two weeks before they rescheduled us. We went without a microwave for three weeks.
And I feel like one company nickeled and dimed us for a while but then when it really came down to fixing the particular problem, we were overly charged because of some other issues. For instance, it was cold in Wisconsin, about 40 degrees. It was a Sunday, a weekend, and TotalProtect said, "Yes, we'll cover you guys for this technician to come out," which we thought was a blessing because they didn't have to. So, the technician comes out, finds out it's an electrical issue. They help us with the electrical issue...and then the furnace was messed up. I end up paying out $700 that day because the motherboard of the furnace went out. So instead of paying the $75 and whatever TotalProtect was gonna pay them to come out on a weekend, we were out $700.
The thing is I never see anybody else in our neighborhood calling regarding issues with their furnace or with their air conditioning unit. It's always our house, every summertime and winter. So I feel like this company was nickel-and-diming us, just coming out and keeping it running. Instead of saying, "Oh. The motherboard is really the problem, let's get this straight", they just nickeled and dimed until it really blew up and became a major problem. It's not TotalProtect's fault, it was the company they sent. I do like TotalProtect but they can probably get a few more companies to come in certain areas instead of Sears.

I recently found out that my parents have been a member of Total Protect Home Warranty Insurance for the past six years when their heat pump stopped working on them and they tried to get it repaired. Well here it is one and a half months later since they filed their claim and they still have not repaired the heat pump. Meanwhile, it is now December and the temperatures have dropped and they still do not have heat in the house. Every time I have called on my parent's behalf, all I have been getting from their costumer service is that they are still researching the part information. My parents have had two different service providers out and both of them have confirmed that the whole unit needs to be replaced, which was confirmed several weeks ago, but Total Protect have not taken any action on. At this point, we still do not know what the status of the repair or replacement is. I just recently spoke with a customer service rep and was on the phone for a total of 56 minutes, of which I only spoke with the representative for maybe 15 minutes of and the rest was being placed on hold while they were researching the status. They need to do the research prior to us calling so that they can assist us with the updated status immediately. They leave us no alternative at this point, but to file a law suit to get something done. I think this is a fraud business taking money from people. We will definitely dis-continue this insurance service as soon as we can.

Scheduled washing machine repair on Nov 29. Was given the date of Dec 1 from 8-5 to be repaired by Sears.I place a follow up call after lunch today. Sears has rescheduled it to Dec 6 according to operator even though her system shows it to be Dec 1. My wife has taken a vacation day today to be home for this. The operator wants to put me in touch with Sears dispatch. I say ok but stay on the line because if she can't help me, I want a supervisor. She transfers me and hangs up. Sears operator tells me she asked her to stay on the line as well. She says the call was never scheduled for Dec 1. She can't help me as there are no techs available. I call back to Total Protect. On hold for ten minutes. No one answers. I pick up another phone and call and I get Diego. I tell him I want a supervisor. he says let me try and help you first. he is going to search for another service provider and will call me back in 30 minutes. I tell him no. Just put me through to a supervisor. He said I am going to put you on a brief hold. That hold went 13 minutes and their automated system came on asking me to rate the call from 1-5. It was a 1 obviously. I call back on another line and am put on another hold for 11 minutes before a "floor lead" picks up. She can't do anything and tells me the same as everyone else except they can put me on a call list if something opens up today but if I do that, the Dec 6 appt will be cancelled! The realtor gave me a year warranty with HMS when I bought the condominium. I'm still within a year because I just moved in in August. My experience with HMS was fine the first time I had a problem with my sink. I called the number they gave me and somebody came right out and repaired it. However, when I had a problem with my hot water tank, they gave me a person to call and I kept calling him, leaving messages, and he didn't return my call. He never did until after the fact I got somebody else on my own to fix it for me. The technician contacted me about five days later and he explained to me that he was very busy. I thought HMS would call me back and ask me about it just like the first time, but they didn't. This last experience really ticked me off especially without having hot water for days.

I purchased an investment property recently which came with an HMS Home Warranty. After closing I experienced some issues with the AC system so I called HMS. They provided me with a local contractor who failed to return my call for an appointment. As the property was due to be rented the following week I called HMS on a Sunday and explained the situation. They agreed that I could use my own contractor but would need to call for approval prior to the work being done. This we did on Monday morning and they approved an inspection of the system for $350 advising that we would need to call again for approval of any further worked. It turned out that I needed a new coil and other parts that came to $1750! We then discussed for over an hour that HMS could provide parts cheaper than my man so in the end I said forget it, I need the work done so I let my man do the work.
I had an exchange of emails and calls for several months resulting in them denying the claim but approving the inspection. Now they are denying the inspection cost despite approving the work. Why is it that insurance companies’ first reaction is to deny hoping we will just walk away? Where is the integrity and business work ethics gone. Would not trust HMS!
Peter - I sincerely apologize for the miscommunication that occured regarding the reimbursement for the diagnosis and inspection cost. Our records show that the reimbursement has been processed for the charges associated to the inspection of the AC unit but we agree that the delays in having the check sent out was unacceptable. We appreciate you sharing your experience. Sincerely - John

Below is a letter I have written to HMS surrounding an issue with our kitchen faucet not receiving hot water – w/o response to date: Last week I submitted a claim for our kitchen faucet not producing hot water. The following day the company HMS contracted came out and spent two minutes to turn on the faucet and determine that the issue was that the cartridge was defective and that Kohler replacement cartridges were not worth the time and effort and was going to suggest to HMS that the faucet be replaced. He informed me that we would have up to $100 for the replacement of the faucet and if we preferred we could purchase another of like quality and be reimbursed the $100. So that afternoon I went out and purchased a faucet for $169.00 and was expecting them to come by today and have it replaced as they had indicated when they left last week.
When I called today I was informed that the HMS claims department had concluded that the issue was mineral build up in the cartridge and thus not under warranty and it was now our issue to resolve. Well today I called a local handyman to replace the faucet and upon completion he went to turn it on and it would not produce hot water. Upon further inspection he went into the garage and checked the hot water heater. There was a separate timer/line to the kitchen. Thus the moral of my story is that instead of paying $100.00 for the company HMS contracted to come by and fix our issue (actually spend more than 2 minutes to turn on the faucet and diagnose that it was a cartridge issue) if they would have checked the water heater the issue would have been resolved.
We now are out $169.00 for the new faucet that was installed (replaced a perfectly good faucet – due to contractors evaluation) and $130.00 for the handyman to install the new faucet for a grand total of $299.00. When the HMS contracted contractor came out they did not collect the $100.00 for the warranty service claim and I would expect never to have them attempt to collect for the visit – along with HMS reimbursing us for the $100.00 the maximum allowed for the replacement!

I heard about TotalProtect from my mortgage company. They offered me a reduced price or deal to sign up and I thought I would like to do that. It's always very hard to get through to anyone when submitting a claim. I haven't done it online yet and I may do that. I've had trouble with some of the providers also. For example, we had a claim for our furnace when the blower went out and they gave me a name of a company and a phone number. We called but all we got was voicemail and no way to contact them. We're talking about the furnace and it was cold.
We finally gave up trying to contact that company and had to call back and wait to talk to somebody at TotalProtect. Then they gave us a name of another company which we called and that gentleman came out right away. But this has happened several times where they'll give us the name of a company and that company either won't respond or there's a problem and we'd have to go through one and maybe even more service companies to get somebody out. However, once we get somebody, they're fine and we're satisfied with their work. I also like that after the service is performed, we get a call from TotalProtect wanting to know if everything went okay.

I don't know if HMS lacks communication or what. I talked to a lot of their people because they called about like re-signing up. I told them that based on the information that I got and a bill of $660 and a bit above $700, I just wasn't interested. I thought the price increase was astronomical. It was almost $200 more than the first quote that I got. After that, it increased to $100 more. It's also change it at will now. It makes me think that I'm paying over and above for the service.
The deductible had also gone up and twice I wound up paying more for the deductible ($75 at the time) than it would have cost me if I paid out-of-pocket. On the first one, it was on my heating and air unit. I wound up replacing the unit because I had a cracked coil and they missed it. I wasn't dealing with HMS per se since they contract different companies to take care of different appliances, services, utilities, etc. However the only way that HMS is going to know about my issues with the contractor is if they follow-up with phone calls or until it's time for me to renew. When I didn't send them money and didn't get another year's contract, they then got on the phone, and I explained my concerns to them. Hence, I don't think HMS or the people that they're using are very good.
Diana - We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. As with any warranty policy, premium and deductible changes occur based on a variety of factors to ensure we are offering the most comprehensive coverage for your home. We regret to hear that you did not renew your policy but we hope you consider us in the future. Sincerely - John

TotalProtect has always been wonderful. The gentlemen that have come have always been polite, efficient, helpful and thorough. They've explained and fixed everything perfectly. The only complaint I have was when I called due to a leak in my cellar bathroom. I kept calling and leaving messages and the contractor TotalProtect had me get in touch with wasn't calling back.
He finally called back. But it was frustrating because I had explained on the voicemail that there was water gushing from my bathroom ceiling. It ended up that he couldn't come but TotalProtect gave me the number. I know the company called a couple of other contractors but no one else could come. So TotalProtect told me I could call whoever I could get and they'd pay the difference in what would've been paid for had one of their contractors come. It ended up being fine.
The claims reps have always been nice, helpful and patient all the time. Also, the guy that came to service my refrigerator was the sweetest thing. He explained what the problem was, told me how he was gonna fix it and told me how an issue happened, which was the same thing with the guy who came to fix my washer. He said that sometimes it happens on washers. These techs were really polite, outgoing, informative, friendly and nice. The quality of the work has been excellent. It's been a fine experience and I've had no problems. Their staff members have been accommodating, quick to respond and knowledgeable. Having TotalProtect is worth the investment.

This last time, their claims rep has been very helpful. But the provider given to me was too far so they told me to give a call back and see if there might be a possible way to get someone closer me. She said she can quickly find someone for me and send the new order out. It wasn't the same rep that I spoke to initially, but both of them were very helpful and accommodating.
When I called last week, I was able to get someone out Friday, so it was very quick and the tech came a little early. He was very accommodating and nice. He checked the kitchen, the bathroom, he went downstairs and checked my ceiling. I thought I had some water dripping from there and he went through all of it and explained everything to what he thought was going on. After he fixed it, he showed me. So far, each person that I've had come out, they weren't trying to take me for a ride which was helpful and they took me seriously. They didn't treat me like I'm just a woman of the house. I tried to cancel my subscription but according to them, I cannot do that until the contract is up. But I don't own that home anymore. I'm paying for something that's not mine so it doesn't make any sense. When I called, I asked for a supervisor but the rep said they would just call me back. Well, that's been two weeks ago. Do NOT use this company - I believe they are a SCAM. Listen to them. Read the fine print and try not to laugh or pull your hair out. This is the first time in my life I have thought so poorly of a product and company that I have actually taken the time to write a negative review. First off, the warranty was part of a closing package that was provided by the brokers involved when we purchased the home. We were not provided a copy of any contract. Just a link to their website. First occasion I had to call was when the motor to our dryer went, and when I say went, I mean was smoking like a fire was about to start. Went to the website to try and find a # to call - GOOD LUCK. Managed to find the # eventually and called just to stay on hold for more than 30 mins and listen to the recording telling me to file a claim electronically over and over again.
I persevered and got to a human operator who was unintelligible and equally unfriendly. They took the info, gave me a claim # and then proceeded to tell me that a service tech would be out to look at the dryer...8 DAYS LATER! Really? I should have known then and there it was a complete fraud of an outfit. I told them "Never mind" and went and bought a new dryer. Next up - we have a built in Fridge and a Freezer/wine shelf next to it. The freezer/wine shelf stop working. Call HMS - 40 minute wait, this time I give up and file an electronic claim. Get an e-mail confirmation with claim # and the number of a local appliance company to call for service. Call the appliance co. and go to a voicemail for "Louie" who proceeds to state (this was a Monday) "I am fully booked this week and fully booked next week also.
So I call HMS again and wait another 45 mins for a human. He apologizes and says that another tech can come out sooner. I tell the operator that our appliance is not a very popular Brand in the USA and not every service company will work on this brand. Operator says "No worries. I have confirmation that they do." 3 days later I take 4 hours off of unpaid work time for the service call. Sears Technician comes to the house and within 5 seconds of looking at the unit tells me that they do not service the brand. Call HMS again - and they say "We don't have anyone in our network to service that brand." So now they tell me. Anyway - they say that if I can find someone who can work on the brand I can have them come out and look at it and whoever that is can call their authorization line to get clearance on the work.
So now I go on the web myself, find someone who can service the brand, schedule another service appointment (yup - more unpaid time off) and forgo a working appliance for another week. Tech shows up, diagnoses the issue (not terribly expensive - maybe $150 over the deductible) calls HMS to process the work order and is told that the item is not covered because only the primary refrigerator is covered and because the freezer/wine shelf is next to but not attached to the "Primary refrigerator" they will not pay for the repair. I asked to speak to a manager and was told that I would receive a call within 24hrs. Still holding my breath. You don't need this company and should stay as far away as possible - I truly believe they are just a giant scam. Terrible customer service and the MOST FRUSTRATING SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF EXPERIENCING!

I had a couple of other questions about the house that he answered, and he was really friendly and knowledgeable. I had a clog in the pipe in my basement where my washer was hooked up to. It was a few feet of pipe that went from the washer to the drain. The tech came and solved the problem. He cleaned the pipe, and it functioned for a couple of months, but now, it's clogged again. TotalProtect was offered to me with a good rate and the mortgage company was suggesting to go ahead with it so I did. It's easy to submit a claim with them. I like the fact that they offer the option of doing everything online and I get the number right away for whatever company I need to call. They let me know ahead of time about the company so that I can go ahead and set it up myself. However, I prefer to be able to talk to someone more. On two occasions, I had to cancel and it took a while to be able to talk with someone. I just wanted to make sure that it was canceled properly or that the person or company was aware that they did not have to come out. But the companies that came out were very good and professional. They were all very courteous and the quality of their work is topnotch.

I recently submitted a claim for a interior water line shut off valve that is not shutting off the water and after explaining my issue the Customer Service representative, "Viviana", she was quick to tell me what was not covered by the warranty. Then when I asked her if, given my explanation of the issue, it seemed probable that my issue would be covered she refused to provide any affirmative response. In fact, she said it would be up to the plumber to make that call. When I setup the appointment with the plumbing service, they said it was up to HMS to determine what is covered or not covered and they couldn't understand "Viviana's" response. Overall, I have had two bad claim processes out of three so far with HMS. They really don't seem to be worth the money for the annual contract.
Mr. Struse - It sounds like we did not meet your expecations for service. Please know we try our best to confirm if items are covered when placing a claim but we may require a technician to fully diagnose the issue in the home to verify coverage. We appreciate your feedback and provided it to the appropriate departments. Sincerely - John

I haven't had anything but very good experience with TotalProtect. They've come over and checked my dryer, replaced my refrigerator and worked on my dishwasher. They've been over multiple times and it's been fine. I've had no problems whatsoever. When they replaced my air conditioning unit, my mother was living over here and she's 87. It was hot and I had her at a hotel. They had called in the order and the man said, "No. I can't come out tomorrow because I would have to pay somebody overtime to come out." TotalProtect called him and said, "Look, we approved that and go over there and take care of this. It's probably an emergency situation kind of thing." So, I'm very pleased with it. Everything went well other than that, but you can't argue with the services I got.
The only time they had to come back multiple times was for my dryer. The last person who came out went, "You know, you just need to clean it that way because it's triggering the element to burn out." So, I had a friend come over and cleaned it out. And that's what the problem was.

Online claims submission was easy. It was no problem. I got the confirmation number for the garbage disposal claim and gave that to the contractors that came. They verified with HMS about the garbage disposal and got it done within an hour. They also put covers on their boots and cleaned up after themselves. The new garbage disposal is working. I didn't get electrocuted switching it on.

The claims rep of TotalProtect was very nice. Moreover, both of the dryer and washer went out at different times, but the guy who came out and fixed my washer and dryer was also very nice. However, one submission of claim was very bad. I had a gas water heater with an automatic vent on it, and was three and a half weeks without hot water. I had to put electric in because TotalProtect would not get me a power vented and had to price everything, but I know they got it.
The plumbers came out and gave them a price. TotalProtect okayed it, kept telling the plumber that everything was set up and then I'd call him and he hadn't heard anything from them. They also told me I had to cut a hole in the roof, and that was one of the holdups. I said, "You don't have to cut a hole in the roof because you already got one there" because the power vent had one that went to the roof. I'm very dissatisfied with TotalProtect.

Total Protect cares nothing about their customers.
I have had two AC repair men out ($200) and both gave different stories. Neither one of the fixed the AC and now TP wants me to pay another $100 to have another service come out.
Their manager Tecora said they would not honor the warranty based on what the serviceman said. He said it was not mechanical. I told her it seems electrical. Do you cover that? She said yes, but he said it wasn't mechanical. This is what it is like talking to these people.
This is the worst home warranty company. They are not on your side. They just want your money. Oh, and try getting them on the phone. And when you do talk to someone, they will put you on hold an average of 8-12 minutes each time. Saying they are researching your claim.
Total waste of time and money. TP and the one man repair companies they hire, are very substandard and will cost you more money than not having a home warranty company

Their reps and technicians were very good, and they have good quality of work too. The only problem I could remember was when I had one plumber whose father died and he had to go to Puerto Rico. When he came back, he forgot me and I gave him a week to settle in, and then I called him and left a message. He had fixed it temporarily because he couldn't make it continue to work until the ordered parts came. He knew he could it. He has the knowledge and was smart enough which was good.

When I bought my house, the seller got HMS Home Warranty to go with it for the first year and I continued the warranty after that year. I figured it was a good idea because the house is older and I didn't know the exact age of things like the air conditioner. It made sense to have them covered. I have found submitting a claim to HMS to be easy. But the first one was not satisfactory because the dishwasher wouldn't work. The guy came out and he said that it wouldn't work because it wasn't installed properly and that they only do repairs and not installations. I spent $100 to be told they couldn't do anything and that wasn't right.
The other claims have been more than two times. We had air conditioning problems and there was possibly a Freon leak. But so far, nobody has done anything to test that. Even though we ended up having air conditioning from the beginning of the summer, it was quite a bit of the summer when we didn't have air conditioning because we were waiting for the repair guy to get here to do it. We lived through it. The first guys, I don't know what the deal was with that company. The strange thing was that when I called after the first company had been out three times about it, I got on the phone and I told the guy that I needed to have the number recalled again because we're having the same, exact problem again. The guy on the phone was great and said, he'll get us another company, which was what I was thinking I wanted anyway but I didn't know I could ask for.
At first, I thought the first guys knew what they were doing. But when we kept having problems, I checked with a family friend who said they weren't. The other company that we had out here, seemed to know what they were doing. They're working their way through it and they seemed to be really great too. But in a couple of weeks, we were back to where we were before. The reason that it was like that was because the day that they put the Freon in after they replaced the A-frame, it was raining. It's hard to fill Freon when it's raining.
They figured that I started having problems again. And after that, we did fine again for a couple of weeks. But I think we're starting to have problems again. That was September 1st when they were out here that day and it wasn't a lot of heat left. When spring rolls around again and if I have problems, I'm going to try to get somebody out right away because I have six months from the time that they were here to call on the same company again.
Their techs have all seemed to be very nice and seemed to know what they were doing, other than the first company. The customer service has usually been great and definitely has a 24/7 contact. The only thing is that doesn't mean you're going to get repaired within 24 hours 'cause if it's backlogged, it may be two to three days before somebody could even come out. It's that difference between 24/7 service and 24/7 repairs. Otherwise, HMS Home Warranty has been worthwhile but not without problems all throughout.

I was then given a new claim number on 11-10-16 with a new contractor whom I called 7 times with no response . I finally called again on 11-15-16 and given yet another contractor. On three separate occasions over the past year when I submitted a claim online, the service contractor assigned did not service the area of my home. Resolving this added several days to the process each time, resulting in a significantly longer time to have the item repaired or replaced. However, what is worse is that the customer service hotline and representatives are completely separated from the claims adjusters and service support group--and they have no way of letting you speak with the claims adjuster if there is a dispute. Everything is handled over email, and the response time is again--several days from question to response. This becomes frustrating and leads to a long, drawn-out process where it seems more likely the result will be for the consumer to just give up and go away.
Which is what I will do--go away and not renew next year. While they were the "lowest bidder" at the time I was shopping for a home warranty, they have customer service that matches a "low bidder" status and you will pay more than the difference in poor claim resolution service. On two different claims where I requested a review of the determination, the response was via email and there was no option to request an appeal or speak to a supervisor. In fact, the only person you can speak to is the customer service hotline, who doesn't make the decisions--they just tell you what they've been told and that is all you get. Not worth the hassle.
Cal - I sincerely apologize for the delays you experienced in having a local service provider assigned to your claim and for the poor communication with reviewing your claims. Please know that we do our best to adhere to the warranty Agreement when determining coverage for covered and non-covered failures and items. HMS Warranty is not worth the paper it's printed on according to my experience. HMS Warranty writes the warranty in such a way as to not cover most items that may go wrong with a home. I bought a house in April and the realtors (Sibcy Cline) added a product "HMS Warranty" and indicated that it would be "peace of mind" that if anything goes wrong with the house, then I have this warranty. Well, plenty has gone wrong with this house and the HMS Warranty people have denied coverage. I had a leaking pipe in the bathroom in which they denied coverage. Another was a low flow situation in a shower stall which they denied coverage. I had a water intrusion problem through the poured concrete foundation in which HMS denied coverage.
I recently had a problem with the HVAC electrostatic air system in which because of neglect by the previous owners, dust buildup has shorted the electrostatic air system so that it no longer works. My HMS claim was denied. First, the fact that a realtor like Sibcy Cline sells this product to potential home owners is a disgrace, because I have tried to use it many times and been denied because it was not a "mechanical defect," according to HMS warranty. HMS Warranty sells their product to make "home ownership easier", but they do not want to pay you for your home ownership problems. It is like medical insurance, where they would rather deny coverage and hope that you will go away... Very frustrating and I will not renew my coverage. I have a year of coverage but the next home problem I will just not bother calling HMS Warranty. I can verify this experience if really needed plus the HMS Warranty invoice.

Our warranty from HMS came with the house that we purchased and everything went great when we submitted a claim with them. It took less than a week for them to authorize the replacement and the tech who came out did an A+ job. It took a little longer for him to install the new AC only because we were leaving to go on vacation. So it bumped out at least a week and a half because of our schedule. The new AC came in while we're on vacation but he couldn't install it while we weren't there. And the minute he was able to get out to the house, he installed it, cleaned up and was amazing. The repair went quickly and painlessly. I completely appreciated his professionalism.
It went much easier than I thought it would be because it's a warranty and you never know what's going to be covered or not. So I was very pleased being that we had no air and it was the hottest week of the month. I have the tech's number and if there's anything that goes wrong, we're definitely calling him, even though he is not right around the corner.

It's a little costly and I rarely use it. But if there's a problem, it could be significant. Before they start asking people to increase, they should check their usage and see if they are a high user. And then, increase it based on the people who use it an exorbitant amount. But so far, it's been good, except for when I had somebody repair my doorbell two years ago. I told him not to pull the wire because it was short and it would break. The guy who installed my door told me if I ever have a problem with my doorbell, I should have them do an extension first. So I told him that, but he still pulled the wire and it broke.
He then put in a claim saying that it was not accessible. I had to get another wireless doorbell, because the one I have doesn't work now. Then, he asked me for the $100 and I told him, "Good luck with that." I called them up and told them that I wasn't paying the $100. They could get it any way they needed to, but it wasn't coming out of my pocket, because he did just what I told him not to do. They talked to him and his office, and I wasn't involved any further. I was not pleased with him at all. But as for HMS, through the years, I'm happy overall.

I submitted a claim to TotalProtect over the phone and it’s been fair. The claim process was fine. However, one of the contractors that came out lied to me. He told me the part was covered and then at the last minute he said it wasn’t, but he was here with the part. It ended up costing me money. I told him if it wasn’t covered, I don’t wanna do it. That didn’t sit too well with me. But as long as they fix what I have, I’m happy. They're as good as any other home warranty.

My realtor bought me the HMS warranty when I bought my home for a year. My only issue with them is the plumbing company that they were using. When they would send their person out, he would just do the bare minimum and would always have to come out and redo the work. I had an issue going on when I moved here which resulted in me having to put in a claim with my homeowners insurance. For two years, water was leaking between the ceiling and the bathroom upstairs, and it caused mold to develop in my home. It cost me some money that I didn’t have. The first time that they came out, they should’ve detected that issue but it just kept going on and on until early part of this year when they actually sent the supervisor out to take care of the issue and found the leak, and the mold had already developed.

I’ve been very happy with TotalProtect's program and got a couple other people in it and they've been enjoying it as well. It's been very successful every time I had to file a claim for whatever that needs to be done at home. Their reps have been very positive and tried to direct me to the right direction. When submitting a claim, I call TotalProtect first and then they give a confirmation number, and then I call the contractor. The most recent came in a couple of weeks ago. They took their time and did a fantastic job.
However, I’ve been having a little problem today because my best friend, who I got in the program, passed last weekend so I’m helping out his wife with the program. I’ve been talking to TotalProtect this morning, trying to get the right information. Some people would tell me one thing and then another, but I found the person I spoke to not too long ago and said I have to have a death certificate. She made it really simple and stated that the wife to be added to the contract.

The claim people from TotalProtect Home Warranty and their contractors are absolutely nice. I have no issues with any of them. The plumbing work was fine. Everything is excellent. The only issue I had is the way the claim is set because you don't know what is covered. When I had an issue with my slop sink in the basement their staff said that its not covered. I got concerned because I'm paying people to come out to pay them $80 as my deductible and then find out they aren't covered. I lost $80 with that. I could have gotten another plumber to do the job for the same price or less. Now, I got to pay the $80 then get a plumber. If it's covered, I'm already out $140 right there from a job for somebody just to see if I'm covered or not.
Also if the weather from the cold weather freezes the pipe and it busts, it's still not covered. The pipes are another problem because some of them are behind the wall. People got warranty for old houses thinking that there's going to have a bunch of wears and tears and you can't stop everything from happening. These things aren't fair to the customer paying about $50 a month. If they say no it means another $200 on top of that problem just to fix the problem. The more and more I look into it it's doesn't sound right as if the customers are being hurt.

They came out on the day that they were gonna come out. They said they needed a part and they would be back to let us know when. They called me and told me that they would be out here on a Friday to do the work. So my wife took off of work for the whole day to be here for this appointment but they didn't show up. They ended up coming back the following day, saying that they were there but no one was there to answer. And that's a lie, no one was here. They said it was a lack of communication, but my wife was sitting here all day. But the guy who came out and fixed it in the end was a very nice guy. Then the beginning of this month, October, we had a sump pump down in the basement that quit working so I called again and got another claim number. HMS gave me a local plumbing company to contact. I called the guy and he had me take pictures of the sump pit and the actual pump itself in the water. I waited four days and I didn’t hear anything. So I called and asked what's going on. I told him that I've been bailing out water by hand every day down in the basement. He said that he's waiting for HMS to approve the claim. It was frustrating because I work in the yard and I couldn’t be running all day doing that so I went and bought a pump and saved the receipt.
The plumber called me two days after that and I told him about it. He said that HMS would reimburse me. I called HMS and they won’t reimburse me. They said that their policy is that I should’ve called. I told them four days went by with me bailing out water and I asked how much longer I was going to wait for them. I called on a Monday morning and got my claim number immediately, which was great, but the rest of it just went south. I sent them an email afterwards and then I had a woman call me back saying something about reading the contract. The first experience was great but I don’t think the second was fair.

I have a rental house in California, Maryland and wanted to make sure that the individuals who were renting the property had something that was economically affordable if something were to happen to the house, even though it was brand new, so I signed up with TotalProtect. I liked their networking and the availability of technicians, whether from HVAC to refrigerator repair, stove repair, air conditioning, gas, all at a moment's notice from one source. These technicians that have come are timely and professional, too. However, TotalProtect's claims processing needs to improve. The communication isn't at the level that I would like it to be at. It needs to be kinked out and worked out. Additionally, the cost of the overall service and what the customer receives back is a topic for discussion.
For instance, recently, I had an air conditioning system and one of the lines physically inside the HV system down in the basement had gotten backed up and clogged. It was leaking and flooding the basement and my tenant there had no idea what was going on. He had to vacuum up water about every 30 minutes so that it didn't continue to destroy things. We then called in and told TotalProtect that it was an emergency. After about 24 hours, we called back and it was never submitted as an emergency request to the company that it was subcontracted out to. Finally, after I and my tenant had to call multiple times to talk to a customer service representative, we finally got it upgraded to an emergency. About 48 hours after the initial phone call, the technician was finally dispatched. He diagnosed the problem and submitted it to TotalProtect.
But the TotalProtect rep called back and said they're not gonna pay for it because what the contractor submitted was that the clogged line was out in the condenser. But I explained to her that that there was no such thing as a condensing line. I also had the contractor, MLP Enterprises, call back TotalProtect to intervene and tell them that that was not what they put in the service estimate and that there's really no such thing as a condenser drain line. In the end, I had to pay for everything out of my pocket. It's not worth my time to argue with over a measly $39 I had to pay out-of-pocket. But it is a concern that if I'm paying $500 to $600 a year for the service and I've only used it twice in the last two years to the total amount of maybe $200 worth of work, then what's the point of having it?

They sent Kennedy Service who never opened the unit but simply said to trim back some trees and the filter I had JUST replaced when the issue started trying to troubleshoot myself. I did those things the same day he told me to. The air temperature didn't improve so I called the company again and the rep told me sometimes it takes a little while to regulate and if it was still doing it in 10 days to call back. I did and requested they send a different rep since he didn't do his job the first time. They sent the same rep who charged another deductible and said the coil was bad. He said "that was probably the problem last time". The claim was approved and 2 weeks later finally fixed at an additional cost of $378. I have tried numerous times to explain to Total Protect reps that if the guy did his job the first time there wouldn't have been a second visit costing the second deductible. I am not questioning the additional cost as I understand things had to be retrofitted due to age of unit. The last rep told me I had to contact the service provider which is who told me to contact Total Protect to begin with so I am DONE going in circles. I went without air for almost two months due to the antics of this case.
Jayme - Thank you so much for taking my call today. Once again, I'm deeply sorry for the amount of effort you put forth to have your AC unit repaired. They did not get back to me and I know they got the material on September the 30th ‘cause I’ve seen it certified.
