TotalProtect came with my house when I bought it 15 years ago. Submitting a claim with them was easy and I usually do it on the phone. They'd get back with me, tell me who to contact and I contact them. Then, they'd come out and would either repair or replace the appliance. Their reps have been real nice and friendly. But with the service techs, that's a different story.
The last service tech that came out, I sent TotalProtect a report. I emailed to them that I don't want that company back at my house. The service tech had to come out twice to fix the problem. First time, they were in such a hurry. They didn't even look for the pipe that was leaking. They said, "It's not leaking. I don’t see any water coming out," even after I told him exactly where it was leaking from. So, it started leaking again. I had to call them and they came back out. The second time, they said to put a clamp around it. After that, I decided to re-clamp the whole house. That company missed out on a $5,000 job and also put a bad taste in my mouth with the warranty company.
Overall it seems like TotalProtect always repairs the appliance instead of trying to replace it. Lots of times, they had to wait to get the parts for it. When they do that, for the time they spent getting parts and doing research, they could've replaced the appliance a lot easier. Also, it used to be $75 for a service call. Now, it's $125. For that reason, I might be changing and I'm gonna be looking for another service company. TotalProtect has been very good before. However, in the present, it hasn't been as good.

HMS Home Warranty was the warranty that came with my house when I bought it. I have an old house and has a lot of issues which they resolved in my first year so I opted to continue to give them my business. Submitting a claim is straightforward and seems to work just fine. It used to be done over the phone with a real live person. Now it’s automated and can be done online as well. I like talking to people so I miss the real person but it's okay. The claims process is fairly easy. I’ve been with them now for five years and the claims reps have always been very polite, knowledgeable, and helpful. Their service techs have always done good and quality work. I’ve never felt like they’ve tried to get one over on me. They always come in, do the work, and honor the contract. When things go wrong in my house, I’m really glad to have HMS Home Warranty in my corner.

We got TotalProtect when our mortgage company years ago changed. It's been fine in submitting the claim but they don't pay for anything very big. We have had to pay quite a bit of expense on the air conditioner and some stuff like that. What they'll do is they'll send you a check for half of it or less. My husband keeps telling me to cancel it but I've kept it. Their reps are nice and we’ve had a good experience as far as the speed and generally, the experience has been fine. Overall, it's worth it.

It's the smart thing to do to look into getting home warranty. HMS Home Warranty is a good company. Our realtor purchased the warranty for us. Submitting a claim with them was done over the phone. Their reps and technicians have been great. All in all, our experience has been good and we're very satisfied with HMS Home Warranty.

I have been with HMS Home Warranty for a year and renewed for another year with them. The communication was very good and very fast. It was always within the day that we hear back from them. We've had a couple of issues with the recommendation on who to call and it's been fine. The furnace people were really good. We did have a plumbing problem that was not handled well. The people they recommended were specialists in heating and cooling. They do plumbing on the side. They didn't fix the problem with our toilet upstairs right so it leaked again. We appealed that and glad they gave us somebody who knows what they were doing. We called them and said, "We know that a plumber that we know is on your list. He may be more expensive but we like him to come back." That's what they did. We're happy with what HMS did.

I had a home warranty with a different company, but they were too expensive, so I looked for something that was more price-range. TotalProtect's customer service and the companies they have that come out and service your home is much better. When I spoke to them, I was satisfied with their professionalism, the accredited companies, and how their rating goes. Since I've been with them, I found out that their service people are awesome. They're also very helpful and professional when I submit a claim. They jump right on it and I never had an issue with them. It's an easy process.
I've had one small issue with the toilet, where one company that TotalProtect sent out told me that I needed to replace the whole toilet and another company said I just needed to replace a part of the valve system, and the TotalProtect people were very helpful in resolving the issue. However, there was one company sent out that I didn't find to be as professional, and I wasn't happy with the first rep they sent for the toilet issue as he was not very courteous and knowledgeable. TotalProtect was happy to send a different technician out, and so far I'm absolutely happy. I love the fact that TotalProtect is always ready to get in there and make things right.

HMS Home Warranty was provided for us when we bought the condo. We had one disappointment that something wasn't covered by the policy, but it was a logical non-coverage. When we had a problem with an appliance, the first people they referred to us were 90 miles away. We're down in Cincinnati and they referred us to somebody North of Dayton. Because of that, they couldn't get down for two and a half days. But the second time, they did much better. My experience with HMS has been pretty good in general.

TotalProtect's claims process is automated and sometimes I can’t tell somebody what the problem is. And the people you talk to has no idea what you’re talking about. If you’re dealing about a water heater or a dryer and you told them the brakes on that dishwasher don’t work, they’d write it down because they don’t know. Also, they used to make an appointment or would give you the person and this person will call you when they’re coming. Now, they just give you a phone number and the name of the company and it’s up to you to call them. And sometimes they’ve sent people from 75 miles away here to fix something because I think a lot of businesses don’t want any part of this warranty thing.
The service people know what they’re doing and are better than the people I have to deal with at the company. But usually, they are not not allowed to go get a part on the truck and fix the issue. They have to call the warranty people. They order the part and ship it to your house and you don’t get the thing fixed until the next week. I had a clothes dryer where they ordered parts. The parts were shipped to my house and they sat here for over a week before I could get somebody out here to fix my dryer. We made two trips 25 miles away to a laundromat to wash clothes because they would set up an appointment for Thursday but by Thursday, they change it to Friday and then by Friday, it’s changed again to Monday. And you would think since they’ve already started the job, it has priority over other jobs but apparently not.
The people who were working on the dryer were from a company contracted by Sears. I told the warranty people to not ever send Sears back to my house as I waited for two weeks to get my dryer finally finished. But I had a dishwasher problem and Sears is the only one that they have down to do that so Sears came out and fixed the washer. This time, the guy was real smart. He knew everything about it and explained everything to me.
TotalProtect usually gets everything fixed but you seem like you have to wait too long to get an issue fixed, and then they don’t have enough companies to do their work. One guy told me he drove 400 and something miles the day before just running all over the state. And companies don’t want to sign up to work with them when they’re only getting paid a certain amount and end up like that. Also, what I have to pay is the most important part. Total Protect is raising the price this month so I don’t know if I’m going to keep it or not. The charge now is so high that I can call the service man who has a place three miles from me for probably the same price or less.

The people who had our house before had HMS Home Warranty and recommended it. HMS Home Warranty was fantastic and their representatives are terrific. They were just right up. Whenever we needed them they were there and took care of the problem. Filing a claim with them couldn’t be any easier. I just call them and they’ll recommend a local plumber or heating or whatever it might have been. They come out and either fix it or get a new one.

I submitted a claim for a Samsung refrigerator last Thursday because the refrigerator panel wasn’t working. I know it takes time for something that wasn’t an emergency but I was following up on my claim all the way. I called HMS at 11:30. The guy was supposed to come at 12. They called him and he said he would show up at 12:30. He didn’t show up at 12:30 and then I called them at 1:30. They called Sears, got Sears on the line, and Sears said they were having a problem. They could not come. And so they rescheduled. It’s supposed to be this week, Thursday, but they didn't come. Not only did they not tell me they were not gonna come, I had to make all the calls to find out they weren’t coming. That’s what I was upset about. I don’t work, but I do take care of my mom and I would have been at her house earlier.
HMS themselves did what they could. And I know sometimes they have to go out and get the brand people to do the work. We don’t know how far they are booked up, but if they were two or three weeks, they should go out and find somebody else who can do the work or they have to pay extra to get them the account for someone else and get my work done. However, when I previously submitted a claim for my disposal, the technicians came out in a timely manner. It didn’t take them as long to get out. They found out it wasn’t the disposal, it was the switch that turns it on and off. And they fixed that.

I’ve had TotalProtect for 11 years now and I’ve been satisfied with the service. When we have an issue I’ll call them and I’ll tell them what my problem was. Then they’ll turn around and give me a confirmation number with the name of the customer that will provide the service. Their technicians have been pretty friendly and sincere. If I run into another problem they’re right there to take care of it for me. There’s been only one experience that I had with one particular company that I was very upset with and they even double billed me. But TotalProtect was able to resolve that and settle it promptly. The only concern that I have is the cost of the deductible. It seems that the deductible keeps going up. If it continues, I might have to shop around. Other than that, their overall service is reliable and punctual. And the subcontractors that I dealt with are very presentable and efficient.

Our toilet overflowed as some guests I had put baby wipes down the toilet. So I filed a claim to HMS and they suggested a plumber for me. I love the plumber. It was a very long day for him and he was going to come the next day, but I begged him to come that day because I really needed it to be unstuck, and he did. He came late in the day when it was raining and it was almost dark, but the man worked really hard and got it all fixed for me, so I was very happy with him and the HMS people. I had to pay my $100 deductible, but that was okay as they got the work done. It was a pleasant and efficient experience and I would recommend them.

HMS Home Warranty was provided by the seller when we purchased a new home. We’ve had it since July. The most recent claim was for an air conditioner issue, and so far, the service has been fine. Every time I've called HMS Home Warranty and this was the third time I had to call, they got back to us right away. They provided the person that was doing the work. TotalProtect Home Warranty did an excellent job on us. I recently called for my sink and didn't have a problem with the claim. Their customer service team was excellent in doing their job. They took care of the problem right away. However, TotalProtect had to select a good company they were going to send. When I called one time for a problem with the faucet that was leaking upstairs by the bedroom, there was a problem with the company that they sent in here. They said it was already fixed but it was still leaking. That's why I had to call them back. Then the commode downstairs wouldn't flush. Three days after the repair, there was a problem. It was stuck up again. Then they sent the same company but a different person.

The claims rep was fast, efficient, and professional. And the technician who came out was also very fast, efficient, courteous, professional, polite, friendly, fantastic, and he cleaned up after himself. The quality of the work performed was great. Submitting a claim with TotalProtect Home Warranty was smooth and easy. I'd explain to them in the best way I could what the problem was and they'd listen. TotalProtect was the one that our mortgage company recommended when the letter came out years ago and after looking at it, I took it. I also figured out that a lot of things started to go wrong and having our home warranty over the years has saved us a lot of money in the long-run.
However, their automated systems could be pretty confusing and a lot of times, it goes back to where I started from. I hate it when the tin lady comes out and then says, "Press this button, press that button. Take the following over there." It drives me crazy. All I wanna do is talk to a live person. But when I talk to an actual person, the reps were always good, very helpful and understanding. They seemed to know what the process was and explained to me how they do things. Also, I would ask questions to the technicians about certain things and they'd tell me what's going on. Both of them have been very informative and efficient. On the whole, I've always had excellent communications with TotalProtect.

The first claim that I did with HMS Home Warranty was a bad claim. It was the toilet and the technician did not fix it. He came here on a Saturday to fix the toilet, but left after five minutes and said it was fine. Then I paid $100 for those few minutes. I called HMS about a month later for a second thing that needed fixing. It was the garage door and that claim was good. They replaced the motor and the button, and I was very happy. When I asked about the toilet, they thought the first guy had already fixed it and put in new parts. He reported that he finished fixing two toilets but he did not. He lied. I told HMS that he didn't fix it and that he just came here for three or four minutes then left. HMS will report that but I hadn't heard any about it and my water is a high bill from that. Nevertheless, HMS has been good in serving me. When I call them, they give service immediately. I have a third claim which is getting dealt with tomorrow. It's about a bad pipe that's leaking underneath the bath.

But they ended up calling me before I called them. The technician that came out was very friendly and was only there for 20mins. The only thing I didn’t like was that they only took checks. I came across HMS Home Warranty when I purchased my house. They're familiar to me so I went with them. Even my realtor has started HMS. I have been with them since 2008. Submitting a claim with them is good, that's why I'm still with HMS. I call or submit claims online and both works the same way but sometimes if I really want to talk to someone, I call on weekdays during working hours. When something happens the night of a holiday, I usually go with the online or the phone automated system. It would be nice if we can always talk to someone but it doesn't work that way. Then after I filed the claim, they assign me a contractor and the contractor calls me. The claims process is not difficult but sometimes it's hard to get someone immediately especially during winter time.
I've also been getting good technicians majority of the time, except for some five years back when I had a guy who came in for my AC repair, put some tape, and then reported that he took care of the job. When I called again, HMS wanted me to pay another deductible and I asked them why I should pay the deductible when he never did anything. I didn't pay and they sent someone. Then after that, most of the experiences were good.
Recently, when my dryer went out, some technician from Sears showed up. They're reliable technicians from reputed companies. It's always better to keep contractors who are reliable since there are some technicians who are cheap but don't do a good job. But so far, it's been okay with the technicians. At any rate, 90% of the time, whatever that was done was good. I had been happy a customer with HMS. In spite of many people telling me there are companies out there where I can pay $350 and still get the same coverage, I didn't even shop around because I was happy with this company.

The plumber who came out called the service rep to get approval and then handed the phone to me. The service rep I talked to was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
The technicians were on top of the job, knew what they were doing, and I was very impressed with them. They were punctual, very knowledgeable, and they took care of the problem in an expedient manner. Also, the quality of the work performed was great. HMS was originally the home warranty provider when my daughter bought the house in November '15, then we renewed the warranty in '16. It's been real good submitting a claim. However, the only thing that was questionable was, we did some upgrade but we got conflicting statements from the HMS reps on whether or not we had an upgrade. We had a garbage disposal that went out, and it was the only one. Apparently it was hardwired so we had to have somebody come out and put a new electrical plug in for it, so we did that. At the same time, we put in a whole new electrical box. But then later that year, HMS called us and the rep said that we didn't have any upgrade option on the report. But then, when I talked to some other lady rep on another claim, she said that yes, we did. But we didn't ever submit anything for the upgrade.
The other claim that we filed with HMS seemed fine. The people that came out have been excellent and we haven't had any problems at all. The technicians that come out have been very courteous and friendly. They explained what they were doing, what happened, and why it leaked. They showed us what they've done, and it's been real good. We're going to continue with HMS and renew the warranty with them next year, except that we won't do the premium one. We've upgraded everything that we possibly could at this point. We'll keep renewing the warranty with HMS every year. Overall, they have been professional and reliable.

I am going to try and not be emotional with this review. I like to pride myself in my understanding of processes and procedures, however, dealing with this company is painful. I will say that the customer service representatives are very cordial and at least pretend to be understanding and sympathetic. I have had this company as a home warranty since March 2011. I was always afraid to file a claim because the cost of the deductible would typically be more than the cost for me to repair the issue myself. When it came to my pool pump, that was a different story. Toward the end of last year, I had issues with my pool motor going out. It took almost 3 months to resolve this issue. I was finally provided with a new pool motor, but not after having to go through three separate contracted companies, one of which removed a part and denied it, took my deductible and never followed up with the warranty company. On to my current issue. My filtration system on my pool. It has been several weeks since I contacted Total Home Protect to file a claim on this issue. At first I was told I did not have pool coverage (this sounded funny), so I hired another company to come diagnose my issues. I phoned Total Home Protect again and tried to verify my coverage. The informed me that at my annual renewal (less than a month prior), my coverage changed because they no longer offered the plan I was on. So they renewed my coverage (excluding pool coverage), and increased my deductible from 65.00 to 125.00 a month. In previous years, at my renewal period, I was provided with information indicating that unless I wanted to make changes, I didn't need to do anything. This year was the same, only they failed to inform me of the changes THEY made without my consent. Through several calls to customer services, I was able to add pool coverage (with an additional $240.00 paid immediately) and file my current claim (125.00 deductible). Before I added the coverage, I verified with membership services that all of the parts that I was needing would be covered. I listed each one individually and I was told "yes, it is covered". Flash forward to claim denial of those parts I previously was told were covered (mind you, I have not received any coverage information for the pool since it had to be added back on). I have spent almost every day for the past 4 weeks trying to get this resolved. Phone calls were pulled...they verified that I was told the parts were covered but they say "we're sorry the customer service representative misinformed you". Where is the accountability? Why should I have to pay for their mistake? Additionally, I live in Arizona and just 2 weeks without a filtration system...the pool looks as though aliens landed and had babies in my pool. In the 6 years I have had this pool, it has NEVER looked like this. The costs I am going to have to FIX this issue because it wasn't and still hasn't been handled in a timely manner. I now have to drain my pool, and do a chlorine bath to remove the staining caused by the algae - I don't even know the cost involved with that one yet. I have had to purchase parts on my own that they are now telling me aren't covered (though they initially told me they were = $350.00). The company they had come out didn't even address all of the issues I filed on the claim. An attempt was made to stop a leak at the canister by replacing the bolts when the company I hired indicated it needed to be replaced completely. The new bolts after 2 days are spraying water onto my electrical components. The initial issue was debris going back into the pool from the filter. Small particles of DE. The issue now (after they came to look at it) is torn grids (the part they are refusing to replace though I was told they were covered), cracked manifold, cracked backwash valve, leaking at the clamp for the canister lid, etc. I am beyond frustrated with this process. I Highly recommend you re-consider this company when shopping for home warranty needs. This isn't the only negative interaction I have had with them. The pool pump last year took several months to resolve. NOT ACCEPTABLE.

The contractors came on time and they knew exactly what was wrong and what they were doing unlike the people who came before them. The guy who put in the water heater did it wrong but it lasted for a year before it started leaking and it was all because of the way they put in the overflow tank. But the new guys TotalProtect sent out were great and they fixed the problem right away. I also noticed that other people in my community have used them ‘cause I see their truck around. We called HMS because our microwave wasn't working. They sent out a technician who got the power working. But the microwave still wouldn't heat up food. I figured out it was because the door wasn't closing, so we called again. They came out again and tried to charge us the deductible again. I disputed this but they said it's a separate issue. When I asked if the microwave doesn't work AFTER the door is changed, would they charge me a third time, they said yes - each issue is separate. Does this make sense? Isn't it the repair company's responsibility to diagnose and fix an appliance issue? We could have bought a new microwave with the money spent on these deductibles plus time off for the multiple visits by a company I would never recommend to anyone in our area. They were consistently 1-2 hours late for every appointment! The warranty is no good.

I had TotalProtect before and then I cancelled because I thought it wasn’t really worth it. My mortgage company suggested them and I kept getting flyers inserted in my bill when I was still paying hard copy statements. I’ve been with TotalProtect ever since and I find it very helpful except that the deductible went up from $75 to $100. I recently had problems with the plumbing in my sink. When I turn on the faucet, it floods. I called TotalProtect and paid $100 deductible even when the basic charge for an hour a plumber is only $75. I could just have not called TotalProtect and went direct to the plumber.
TotalProtect has been pretty nice about everything. I had a microwave that was here when I moved in and there’s something wrong with it. I called TotalProtect and they sent a technician. And then when there was nothing he could do anymore, he replaced it to a Maytag which I hated. It only lasted for three years and it was too big. Their technician also seemed like he was part of a fly by night organization. He ruined the Maytag microwave. TotalProtect decided to replace it so I asked if they were only supposed to spend $249. I also asked them if I could just choose my own microwave and if we’ll go over what they are allowed, I will pay it. So that’s what I did. I got the amount that they were supposed to pay and I’ve been happy, otherwise I would have canceled.

HMS was included in a home purchase. I have three properties. I just renewed one of them and the other one is still under a year timeframe. One time, I called HMS when the icemaker went out, and they set me up with a local person who called me the next day. Then the guys came out and fixed it. I like the claim representatives that I dealt with. I've been satisfied with HMS and I renewed with them. It's a pretty good deal and I'll keep renewing.

My experience with TotalProtect has been fine. The only discouragement is that they went up on the cost when I had an issue with my oven. To come out, it's now $100. I paid the $100 and the technician replaced the igniter and then it went out again a couple of days later, and he came back out. He got it going again, but yesterday, Easter, I had a big dinner party and I had to move it to a friend of mine's house because my oven went out again. And so, my only hesitation is that having them come out again and pay another $100. After I do that a couple of times, I probably could have had a new one. I wasn’t sure if I called them out again, pay another $100, if they would find something and say that TotalProtect would replace the stove.
Before the $100, it was $50 at first then it went up to $75, and then I was fine with that $75 on the call because normally we didn't have too much of an issue. But then they're not making things like they used to make them anymore. I don't know if I'm saving money or not if they have to come out more than enough times.
We pay $50 a month and so paying that a month and not even have to call and use the service within six months to a year, sometimes I feel like the money that we pay a month for the service should go towards that service call because we're paying that. But I guess it's just like an insurance, if I never have to use it then it's just money sitting there. But the service is great. I've never had any problems with the people that come out. There was only one time that I asked them not to send a certain company out anymore. I just hope they keep it affordable because that's why we go with it.

TotalProtect Home Warranty was tied in with my mortgage at the time when I looked at it. It looked like it was pretty reasonable. I've been with them since December and my daughter who's living in my condominium has filed one claim for the garage door opener that didn't work. She called up to get the claim number. They said that people would call her back the following day and they did. They set up an appointment and everything was taken care of. It was done in a couple of days. They were very responsive when we called and the people were out as soon as we wanted. We didn't have to wait long.
The only problem that I had is that I'm supposed to be on a plan that was to be renewed every month. It's supposed to start in January. I had to call them up in January, February, and March in order for them to bill me because I was concerned that I wasn't going to be covered with anything. In April 1st, they finally billed me so I figured that I'm good now.

We call into TotalProtect to start a claim. Sometimes, we talk to a person, sometimes we go through the automated system. It depends on the time of the day. And then they will contact us back with who the claim has been submitted with, which company is going to fulfill the claim. Normally, that company will contact us the same day to set up an appointment. And then once the appointment is there, they'll come out and do the work. They'll contact TotalProtect to get approval to do the work once they've done their assessment. And then, TotalProtect usually follows up about a day later to find out if there was any issue with the work.
The last claim we had was about a garbage disposal last month. We called it in over the weekend and on Monday, we got contacted by the company and had an appointment for the following day on Tuesday. In that past, it has normally been within a day or two that we have someone out to address the problem but they came out after lunch on Tuesday and they were on site for about 45 minutes and that was it. Their quality of work was great. There were two gentlemen from the company that came out and they knew what they were talking about. We haven't had an issue with our garbage disposal since. TotalProtect is a professional organization that does whatever they can to help us get our claim completed in a timely manner.

An HMS warranty came with my house when I bought it seven years ago. I kept it for those years, and I'm pretty happy with them. I usually call and tell them what my problem is, then they give me the name and contact information over the phone and email it to me. They're very friendly, helpful, and easy to get a hold of. I reach out to the vendor and in every case but one, over seven years, the vendor has been exceptionally responsive. Also, in 95% of those cases, they've solved the problem on the first try without any issues whatsoever. There's a reason I've kept HMS Home Warranty for seven years and haven't looked around at all. They've been exceptionally reliable and the value they bring at the price they are is enormous.

At the time, TotalProtect had the most coverage for the value. They covered everything from the little bit of things to big things, their deductibles were low and they always have the best references for people so I chose them. I called one time and they referred this man to me to fix something. After I talked to him, I thought he was quite rude. So I called TotalProtect, explained the situation, and told them that I don't want to deal with the guy. They set me up with somebody else and they made note of that. I thought that was really neat.
Then I have submitted most the claim online but I did one on the phone way back. The representative was very nice and helpful. Professionally speaking, they knew exactly what to do and they answered all my questions. I kept them as I haven't had any problems so far. I already recommended them to friends and to some people that I know are homeowners who always have issues with their stuff.

When I bought this place my real estate lady told me about HMS Home Warranty. She said that a lot of banks reference them. Everything was good with them other than my very first experience. My washing machine walked halfway across the floor and it bounced. The first technician came out and they replaced a part. The second one came out and I don't know if he replaced a part or he thought he fixed it, but the washing machine still did what it did. The third one came out and he finally told me that it was always going to do this because I'm on the second floor and it's a wooden floor, but it's a level floor and I had my washing machine in my house, for 18 years, upstairs on a wooden floor and there was no problem. They also didn't tear it all the way down.
I think it was something inside the tub that was wrong, so I had to go out and buy me a new one. I should have pushed them again and had somebody else out and talk to somebody. At one point, I left a message for somebody to call and they never did. But with my most recent experience with them, my microwave went out and it was fine. The guy was extremely nice and they called, picked it up on the same day and in a couple of weeks I had it installed.

Several years ago when we refinanced our home, the mortgage company that we went with gave us some information on TotalProtect. We've renewed several times with them. I usually call in my claim and the reps make a note of the claim. Then they will get in touch with some local contractor, whether it's electrical or plumbing, to come out and take a look and see what the problem is. There's a deductible of $100, but it used to be a $75. And if they can repair it, they will let TotalProtect know.
We've had to replace the dishwasher, microwave and the refrigerator. TotalProtect will say that they'll give X number of dollars to replace this and give me the make and model of the equipment. If I don’t like that, then I'll go out and buy what I need, and they’ll just pay me what it was gonna be allowed on the others. The last two times that we had someone out, one was for the replacement of the dishwasher and the other for an electrical problem with the light switch. It was the same service people and they were very nice people, a husband and wife team. They're just about capable of doing anything electrical and did excellent work.
But TotalProtect's main problem is the ability to contact someone in this area to look at the problem. They're on the East Coast, we're out here in Montana and the service people are few and far in between. When the refrigerator was not working, it took them a while to get somebody out here. In the meantime, I've got to have a refrigerator so I went out and bought a refrigerator on my own. Nobody had taken a look at it, and so they said that they couldn’t pay the claim. But eventually, they told me that I can't do without a refrigerator. They couldn’t get someone out here to look at it, so they understood the situation. They ran it through some of their people and reimbursed me for the refrigerator. But overall, I would recommend TotalProtect.

I had to do another electrical claim several months ago because the people who came out did something to one plug and then another one went out on the same line. They had somebody come out from Fort Worth, Texas because there's nobody close in my area who works for TotalProtect. They found the problem and everything worked. The experience has been good and until I have another problem, I'm satisfied. I had my house built back in 2005 and we found out about TotalProtect online. We have a lot of appliances and rather than having to replace them any time they break down, its better to just be able to call somebody and have them come out and fix it for a small deductible. I give TotalProtect a call, tell them what's wrong, what the product is. Then they give me a claim number. They either call the contractor to come do the work or they set it up automatically for the contractor to call me, or they'll give me their number and tell me to call the contractor myself. So it really depends on who it is. And usually, the techs get to your home within 48 hours from whenever you call.
However the quality of work is spotty, it's hit or miss. I've had some people come out and do just kind of average work. It's not people coming out from TotalProtect doing the work; it's the subcontractors that they use. I've had somebody come out to fix my stove and he was okay. I've had people come out to fix my air conditioner, and that was pretty good.
TotalProtect has worked pretty well for me so far. The amount I paid in premiums over the years that I've had it, I probably could've just bought new appliances. But who knows if those would have broken down either. It's worth it. It's like any insurance though. It's like one of those things you hope you never have to use. But if you do, it's just there. It's only about $40 a month. I see it come out of my account every month. Then sometimes I'm like, "Why am I paying for this?" But then when something breaks down, I'm like, "That's why I'm paying for that."

My friend had a good experience with TotalProtect, so I decided to get a home warranty with them, too. What I like about it is that I spread my costs over monthly and over time, so if anything goes wrong and I have a big problem with any of my appliances, such as the dishwasher, the clothes washer and dryer, and the stove, and they'll send somebody down to fix it. There's a deductible of $125, aside from the $58 a month that I pay, but I'm not going to be out of pocket for the whole repair cost. I have expensive things in my home and everything is electronic now, and that's what I was concerned about. In fact, I just replaced my water heater. But I have that covered now, and that cost $1,800 to repair. So, it's like an insurance policy. To submit a claim, I just call up TotalProtect. So far, the technicians they have sent out have been good and everything seems to be working properly with them right now. So I'm satisfied and I would recommend them.

HMS provides low grade vendors that collect your deductible and do little to no work. HMS should guarantee money back within the first 30 days if displeased with services. I have been waiting for 3 - 4 weeks without a working washer machine and I still don't have a definitive answer for when it will be fixed. Additionally the repairman that they send was horrible. He showed up hours late both times. This left my wife stuck at home all day when she had things to do. The second time he brought the wrong replacement part. He said he would be back on the same day but he never did. He had to come back a third time.
For about a month everything worked just fine and then the second issue happened again. My wife called HMS to fix it and requested that someone else be sent. They told us that because this is part of the same issue we would have to use the same contractor. We were not happy about using the same person but because of the policy we went along with it. We warned them that the issue is inconsistent and they said that this was not an issue. The contractor came and could not replicate the issue and asked for the deductible which we told him we did not have to pay as this was part of the same claim. We have a video of the issue. When he tested he only tried clicking on buttons. He didn't actually run a diagnostic on the board. He told us that he would put in for a new motherboard as it was obvious from our description that that was the issue.
A week later HMS called to say that we had to pay as this was a new claim and that nothing will be installed because the repair man could not replicate it. We went back and forth trying to explain that this was the same issue. All of this was on the phone and every time we asked them to send us an email for our records explaining what we discussed. They never sent anything and we eventually ended up talking to the different supervisors who told us different thing, which conflicted with each other. This inconstancy with information every time we talked to them made it impossible to know how to deal with the issue. With such terrible customer service and horrible contractors I will never suggest to anyone to use HMS.

Submitting a claim to TotalProtect was simple and their reps were fine although I have an issue with their reliability. One time, I needed my refrigerator replaced and it's an emergency because I have medication. In the first process that I went through, they ordered me one and they said the process would take four days. I called them after 1 week went by but the shipper told me that they know nothing about it being ASAP and if they delivered it, it would have to come on a big truck and they needed a forklift brought in to unload it which would cost more money. And they also don't install.
The people that I talked to said that they can't do it locally because they want to order at wholesale and save money, and it has to be shipped to somebody to be installed which takes time. Then they have to wait for the installer to get a hold of it. While I'm waiting for it to come in, a big truck showed up at my house the other day and it had the refrigerator on it, which was the one they ordered from the first place that never got canceled. So, I had to deny that and I'm still waiting for the other one. However, I've been waiting for over four and half weeks now and I still haven't got it. But I'm still happy with them and I wanna give the most credit towards their customer service courtesy.

They were three hours late when they showed up, and they took two hours to estimate the job. It was on a Saturday, so they totally blew my day up of doing any errands because they were supposed to be here right after lunch and they didn’t show up until almost 4:00 in the afternoon. Then, when they left, they said they were going to put an estimate together and submit it to the company.
When I called Monday afternoon, because I haven’t heard anything, they had never submitted an estimate. So, the HMS turned around and sent the job to a different company. That company showed up on the day that they were supposed to be here for the appointment set up. They took care of it and did a wonderful job. The board was then sent to the wrong address and was lost. My major appliance has been OOC for 3 weeks and now, after many calls, they advised that they are taking another 10 days to see if they can find a board somewhere else even though the manufacture doesn't make it. In no way should you pay for a home warranty, have a major appliance fail and have to wait well over a month for relief. My guess is after they realize they can not get it that it will take another 10+ days to get a replacement. I have spoken to their call center about 8 times in the last week. Every call is like ground hog day and they end up sending me to a barely English speaking person at Sears where we start over and go no where. Then, I was for a new surprise and they sent another provider. Total Protect only paid a small portion of the claim which was contrary to their Service Agreement. Unless you want to get a law degree and fight them in court for all their lies and legal language. Keep in mind, I interviewed 3 of the best service warranty providers. They're friendly and they tell me exactly who I'm getting and their contact number. Then they'll tell me their business hours. Also they're prompt about calling and letting me know if it's reassigned to another service provider.
HMS diagnose the problem which they have to put in a PO and then wait until the specific parts to come in. Then I have to get the service provider again and schedule to get the item installed. That takes three or four days off of the installation. I was a week-and-a-half without hot water because of the delays and then the furnace took a couple of weeks. The service provider got backed up with other work and we got to the end of the list again. It would be nice if they could schedule out the service provider at the same time that they ordered the items.
All three of the contractors who came out were really good. They're knowledgeable and helpful, especially the furnace person. He explained how to read the little light that has all the warnings on it and it was very educational. He also told me how old the system was and how to clean it. Also, I did an online comparison about how much does this system costs versus one of my spendings with HMS and I saved at least $3000 on the furnace and probably $1000 on the water heater. When I got the furnace, I was really surprised that it was a Trane furnace. I was not expecting like a very high-quality furnace so while I did have to wait a little while, the wait was definitely worth it.

HMS Home Warranty's claims process was very easy and simple. I have submitted a claim online several times and the service contractors did good work. It's just that our issue with our refrigerator took way longer than what I thought it would take. It was difficult to identify what was wrong with the appliance and it took more than six weeks to fix it. I had to call the claims rep because of that but it was good every time. Overall, it was professional and quick.

We’ve had a really horrible experience with TotalProtect for the last couple of weeks. Our hot water heater had a small leak in the bottom, so we called in a claim and they gave us a plumber to contact. That plumber came out, took a look at it and said they needed to be replaced. So he got the information and they were putting me in a replacement. He said that it's going to take about two business days before they get it and most likely he'd be able to have it again and then install it on Wednesday. Then on Tuesday, our heat went out the second time in a couple of weeks. So we called and did a claim on that one and they gave us the same guy who was going to install the hot water heater.
The tech said he was going to come in Wednesday to look at the heater and he thought he knew what probably happened, it was the motor that he installed the last time. It might have blown out the electrical panel. So he'd be out in the morning and that's when he was coming out to change our water heater anyway. He then said that he couldn't come out to do the hot water heater because he had to install somebody else's furnace, but he would come out to look at the heat. So when he came here with another gentleman, he looked at the heater and got it fixed and running. He then said he would be back tomorrow which was Thursday, to install the hot water heater.
But he never called or came in on Thursday. I was out of town so my wife tried to contact him, but he didn't respond. So she continued to try on Friday. She had to call the home warranty company again. The tech must have gotten word somehow, so he contacted my wife and said that his back was killing him from foot and there's no way he's going to be able to come and put it in until Monday. So when I came home late Friday night. When I woke up on Saturday, my wife said “There's a lot of water in the basement. That hot water's really leaking now." The hole became even bigger. And then it wound up literally soaking all the carpet and the walls.
So I got on the phone to call TotalProtect and said, “We have another problem because this guy didn't come in and install this. Now I have water all over the place. So who is going to be responsible for fixing that mess now?" They said that they're not responsible for that stuff and that I need to talk to the vendor. So I called the guy, but he didn’t answer his phone. I also left a message saying that he has to clean up all the stuff now that it’s damaged because he didn’t come when he was supposed to come.
He called 5 minutes later and said his back was hurting and he couldn’t get in. He said he told my wife that he won't be here 'till Monday. I said my home’s a mess. He said if I have a problem with that, he’s not responsible. And that I can call my warranty company. I told him that they told me to call him. He then said “I’ll call them right now and I’ll be there Monday to install.”
I called TotalProtect back and explained the situation. They called me back and said the contractor can no longer install the water heater at all. He refused to come down and install it. They told me that I had an option that I could find somebody myself and then they would reimburse it. I asked if I opened another claim, how long was I going to wait. The rep said the guy needed to return the hot water that he picked up first and then they’ll install that one. It can’t be installed until he returned it. The rep also said that she can’t refund the money for the claim until I return the hot water heater either. And that could take up to 20 days.
I’ve already been without hot water for six days and I just needed to get my own thing done. I have seven different businesses, I have a plumber, and one of them doesn’t live too far from my home. So I called him up and explained my situation. I also explained how much money I was going to be getting from TotalProtect. Plumber came in, looked at it and it's all kinds of issues and the bottom line is, it wound up costing me $2400. Total Protect wanted the bill faxed to me, said they were going to look at the bill and they put me in reimburses for the expense in tank if that needed to be replaced then they’ll reimburse that. I said, "Okay. But I don't understand why you're not reimbursing for the cost of the hot water heater?"
He kept coming back and forth with me quoting how I agreed to this money. And that's why they're already going to pay that and they can get hot water heaters at cost 'cause they do it at bulk. Basically, he just argued with me about what his stand was. I deserve a whole day's wage just for dealing with this stuff. And it's so disappointing and I told the guy, "I know this isn't you.” He did a very good job except he didn't have the power to do anything else. Then he said, "Why don't you fax me or scan me an invoice and I'll take it to my manager and we'll see what we can do. So I emailed it to him, but nobody called me. We’ve sent the invoice to him the second time and he still didn’t reply to the email.
I called and left a message and told him that I haven’t heard anything from him. I called again, but didn't hear from him all day. So I'm still in that situation where I have no idea other than the fact that they cut a check for the same amount they said they were going to cut yesterday. So I just want to hear him tell me that it's now closed and that's all I’m getting. It's just absolutely horrible.

I renew my warranty with HMS every year and they'd sometimes send me that booklet with my numbers. I have it on a file folder if something happens. Then I would call a 1-800 number and get a customer service rep. They'd give me the claim number and look up the service entity that would be coming and contacting me. I normally would contact the service entity because I can arrange the timing with them at the same time.
The technicians that have been sent out were very polite and professional. They even ask if they should take their boots off when they come in the house. Also, they performed a very high quality of work. However, I had one incident during the Christmas season where the person was not in their right frame of mind and didn't follow through. Sears had to come in to complete the job. HMS, out of respect for what was going on, sent Sears out to do what needed to be done.
When the only refrigerator that I have was not working, they came in twice for it but they decided it was going to cost too much to repair so they gave me the value of the fridge which is close to $900 and I got to go and get another one and send a receipt. They're still waiting on me to present a receipt for our fridge since I've been traveling and have yet to buy a fridge. I've been an HMS Home Warranty client for about 18 years and I'd recommend them.

We bought a house a year ago and our realtor highly recommended that we get HMS Home Warranty. When I call the 1-800 number, I don't ever recall being on hold for very long. We're given a claim number and the local repair business. The claims process was very easy and the reps were very friendly and accommodating. And the local repair business was real good about getting back immediately and setting up a schedule to come out and fix what needs fixing.
I only have an issue with one of the techs who came out and it wasn't that they didn't fix the problem. When I inquired about how the preventative maintenance should be done, they didn't seem to be very interested in talking. Probably because they had more work to do or other calls. So I just let them go and made a little a note not to look into doing business with those folks anymore. But it's been pretty good all in all. We've been happy and very satisfied and that's why we renewed with HMS again this year.

I've had TotalProtect for about five years. They've always done me right except for one time I got upset with them on my air conditioning, but they made it good. I was out of air conditioning for two weeks right after I got out of the hospital with surgery. They came across and did what they say they'd do. The air conditioning guy did a fantastic job and I really liked him. The refrigeration guy was really good, too. In addition, their representatives are great and they're always nice. On the other hand, a guy from Sears came out, fixed the stove but he did a rotten job. But other than that, getting a home warranty was the best move I've ever made and I'm not going to change. I'd definitely recommend TotalProtect.

When we had a water heater go out and a dishwasher control panel wouldn't work, they were covered. The technicians that were sent out did their job efficiently and the HMS claims reps have always been friendly and courteous. I also had a plumbing issue that when we flush the toilet, it's a big bubble. The plumber that came went out to his truck and called some guy and the guy said more often than not, it's how they plumbed the house with the vent's tack. Without fixing it, he gave us an idea what I needed if I want to do it myself because it's not something that would be covered under the warranty.
So I've had good rapport with everybody that's come in. Their quality of work was good although I wish that the guy would've fixed what's wrong with the toilet. But everybody else has been real nice and pleasant. When I asked the gentleman that did the water heater about the toilet, he said it's a clog. But when I called the plumber, it wasn’t something he could have done. He said it's not a clog but something in the vent. Those were the only three issues we've had but overall, I'm very satisfied with HMS.

The realtor recommended getting a home warranty. He said it's been a godsend to a lot of people. The lady who owned the house before us had TotalProtect and when we bought the house, she gave me the information. We signed right up and later found out it had a good rep. I submit claims online and as far as I can tell, the process is full-proof. I go on the internet to log in, say what's wrong and then, they usually get back to me within 24 hours and within 48 hours, it's fixed. We haven't had anything like furnaces but we've had several appliances like washers, dryers, door openers and dish machine.
What really impressed me is they do not send out some handyman. They send out Sears or real companies to fix the stuff and it's amazing. They're professional and all of them have been extremely friendly and polite. The gentleman that came out a few weeks ago for the dish machine had fixed the machine years ago with the original owner and he remembered the house and the machine. It was so nice to have that continuity because you never know who's really coming and when you get somebody that's been here before and he's so friendly, it takes some of the fear out of doing this. You also hear horrible stories from Craigslist but TotalProtect eliminates all that problem. They send somebody and they guarantee it.
Also, their work exceeds expectations. They fix the problem and issues that they've noticed are gonna happen like one time, the technician noticed the clogged drain so he cleared that for me. When they do stuff like that for you, it's really nice. Then, I look at the bill and I'm saving hundreds of dollars each time one of these guys walk in the house. Everything is fixed right the first time. It's awesome and I'm very pleased. The reps may call to ask a question but they're very polite and courteous and it's a non-issue.
It's so pleasant to not have to worry about Angie's List if you're gonna get ripped off or if it is gonna get fixed. There may be some out-of-pocket, depending on the issue like when we had the water heater replaced, that was very upfront. But they explained everything and you can always say no. But, I'm a little bummed about the $100 service call. It used to be about $70 so, that keeps going up but so does everything else. All in all, TotalProtect is well worth the price and you're crazy not to do it, especially if your home is 10 or 15 years old.

Plus, working with the claims rep was pretty good. We talk to them to try to get somebody on the phone to schedule a repair to come out. The only negative experience is when, one time, Sears was hired, but they ended up switching who they're gonna be using and there was nothing scheduled. TotalProtect had kept calling to follow up and it didn't work well. But the technician who fixed the issue has been good and the quality of work seems to be pretty good.

We were given free of cost for the first year with HMS when we bought the house. We've had good service with them so we have continued their coverage for the last 14 years now. However, there are some difficulties when submitting a claim because when you don't get a human being, you have to take down whatever number they give you and then call and tell them that this is not the person you want because your problem has been always dealt with another company. Then, get that company's number, which takes two phone calls and a lot of time. There should be something on the menu of service that when you wish to speak to a human being, you should be connected.
But so far, it's been good with the technicians. We haven't had a bad one. We had one person whose number they gave us and he couldn't come for two weeks. So, I had to call and get another number. HMS should know if the contractor can come right away if it's an emergency, within a few days rather than after a few weeks. But the boiler company has been fabulous. And we use the same company for the washer, too, which was incidental that they sent the same name to me. They turned out to be very good, too, so I highly recommend them. I would recommend HMS and I did recommend them recently to somebody. We are satisfied.

My husband's no longer with me. He passed and I wanted to make sure that I was covered when incidents happened at the house that I couldn't take care of. So, I looked into acquiring a home warranty and got this from HMS. I usually submit claims on the phone. The technicians have been very cordial, polite and efficient. The work that they've performed has been good. The last claim that I submitted was an emergency claim because my water heater had broken and it was flooding my house. I called HMS, but they couldn't get anybody to me for over four hours or even another day. So, I finally convinced them to let me call an emergency company. They did and I was reimbursed.
However, it would be better if they'd have somebody here when I need them. I remember the time before the last that I called. They sent me a technician from Magnolia, Arkansas, which is 130 miles from where I am in Pine Bluff, and that technician couldn't get here on the scheduled date. It took three days for me to finally be told that the technician couldn't make it, and I had to call back. Finally, HMS sent somebody to me from here in town. So, I didn't understand why they didn't start with the one in town first.

We did what he said, but it didn't last. So, we have to wait.

Total Protect/ Cross Country did in fact contact me and offer a more acceptable solution to my claim settlement. After further review of my claim, they acknowledged that what was originally offered was not comparable and agreed to reimburse the difference between the first offer and more comparable unit.
Original Review: March 20, 2017
I would not recommend Total Protect or Cross Country Insurance at all. They have the absolute worst service. I have had my warranty for a few year, my washer failed. First the company they referred me to for the repair, made me pay the service call fee up front because they said they have issues with collecting from Total Protect and Cross Country. I got thru that after paying upfront for service call. Total Protect opted to replace rather than repair, BUT wanted to replace my 11 cycle and 9 specialty cycle black stainless Electrolux washer with white Ge washer that was not in anyway comparable. the pedestal would not be replaced, so they in essence offered a white Ge brand that would sit on the floor next to my pedestaled Electrolux! I was told a supervisor was too busy and would call after 24 hours. After speaking to a supervisor who said my washer was white according to her records and asked me to send pictures, which I did within 5 min. I was told she would send it back to the review/research team, and they would find a more comparable washer. I was contacted the next day with the exact same offer as the original one and told a comparable appliance was not available in my area. I will be ending service with this company as soon as possible, and I do not recommend anyone use this company.
Monica - thank you for taking our call, and allowing us the opportunity to make this right. As discussed we will compensate you with an additional refund reflecting the cost for a more comparable clothes washer, than originally provided. Thanks –Amanda

We've used the same company both times with Sears contracting to them and their work was fine. The first time was when the refrigerator messed up and they replaced it. The next time was the dishwasher that had not been used for several weeks and it needed degunking. It overflowed probably from gunk and dried something but it's fine now. They were fabulous and very communicative. One day, they were running behind so they called and we rescheduled, but it's fine. It makes sense because they never know what they were going to run into. HMS Home Warranty came with my house and we have them for six years now. Their service was fine so I didn’t feel a need to change. Submitting a claim to them is super easy and I like how they respond in email with the person’s phone number. I don’t have to wait for them to contact the person for the person to call me. However, the worst element that ever has to be repaired is air-conditioning because it’s the most complex thing in the house. I had an install done last year and 375 days later, it needed to be repaired again.
My issue is managing the date of expectation because if I open a claim and the vendor has to go back and get approval for anything, it is unclear to me what the approval timelines are. They’ll say they have 48 hours but they don’t really mean it because they only work 8-hour days. So, the 48 hours actually translates to six working days, which gets to at least eight lifetime days. The customer service agents do not know those standards at all nor do they know how to explain them. If I knew what the standard was and if I understand why it was that way, then I could manage my own expectations. Nevertheless, they're fine overall. They’re comparable on price and delivery, and their electronic portal is getting better.

We’ve had TotalProtect for a long time. I figured that getting a home warranty will pay for itself in the long run and it did when my washer broke down. However, the technicians ordered the part that was needed, put it in and the washer still wouldn't work. They looked around, found what they needed but it was a defective part. It started to work for about one load of wash and the second one, I had to wring it all out by hand again. They came back the third time with a new part to get it fixed. It was a real hassle that I was without a washer for about three weeks with all the running back and forth in getting the parts. I had to go to the laundromat, bag everything up and take it down, and then put it in the washers and stand there and wait on it, and bag it back up and cart it back home. It's also expensive that I was shelling out money to do it and it's time-consuming. But they finally got it.
Another situation I've had to use TotalProtect was something on the door was broken. The guy that came had the right part in his truck, so he went out, brought it in and we're good to go. Whenever I've called in to submit claims, they were able to get things going right away and usually, they provide a pretty fast service of getting a repairman out depending on how busy they are.

When I bought my house in 1999 the warranty came with it for a year and we renewed it. I just call the toll-free number and report my issue with the customer service rep. And then they typically give me a number to call, whether it'd be an electrician or whomever, depending on what the problem is. They give me a claim number and then I call and make the appointment. And then the service person comes out and I give them the claim number and pay my $100 deductible. Their service technicians were fine and the quality of their work was good. It doesn't always work that smoothly, though.
There have been times when it was incredibly difficult. There was a stove that was sent out, then it was the wrong size. I had to have them come back and get it. Came out, again, it was wrong. I had to call and call and call the customer service. When I would say, "Can I talk to your manager, there's a problem." They wouldn't call me back. It was horrendous. They would tell me things and they didn't follow through. It was very difficult to communicate. I would be talking to a different person every time. I was incredibly frustrated. But I'd already paid for my annual premium. If I didn't follow through, then I wouldn't have gotten what I needed.
But, this is before they switched over to this new customer service. The last time I submitted a claim it has been easy. They outsource the customer service now and it's a hundred times better than what it used to be. The last time, the woman said, "I'm going to make the call to the service people for you." I'm like, "Really?" And so she called them direct. It was like a breath of fresh air and they're friendly and caring, all the things you want a customer service rep to be. I never felt that way before. The service was nothing like that.

I just bought a house and my washer/dryer broke down. I called HMS and they got me a plumber right away. He showed up the next day as scheduled, and I paid him a deductible. He then walked out the door and I never heard from him again - he never sent in the required paperwork to HMS so that they could assess and process my claim. I called the plumber and HMS again and again - more than a dozen times over two weeks - to try to get the paperwork in. They did nothing to help me. Every time I talked to HMS they just said "we can't do anything until we get the paperwork from the plumber." From time to time they also offered to "escalate" my problem to the regional coordinator, or a contractor manager, or some other person, but nothing happened. Supervisors never returned my calls.
Finally the authorizations team agreed to look up my washer/dryer model and figured out that they'd have to replace it (the plumber never did send in the paperwork). That set off a whole different set of hassles. HMS refused to offer me comparable appliances - I had compact units and they would only give me a full-size replacement that wouldn't fit in the house. Which means that I was obliged to take the credit instead of the replacement. But then when I got the written confirmation, the amount of the credit for the each of the units was $100 less than they said it would be. So I had to embark on yet another set of phone calls to HMS.
It turns out that the $100 discrepancy was "a mistake in their system." They swear they weren't just deliberately rip me off! But of course I had to wait days for a supervisor to manually make the correction. And I never actually got a phone call from the customer service supervisor that I'd been requesting over and over again. Next time one of my appliances breaks I will absolutely pay for it out pocket rather than try to deal with HMS again. I guess that makes me a success story for their customer service department!
Updated on 05/15/2017: I had to call them back for a second appliance problem and had an equally disappointing result. My water heater is making a loud popping noise that my general contractor told me I needed to get checked out. I didn't think it was covered by my warranty, because the heater is still working and this sounded like a maintenance issue. So I called HMS, asked whether it was covered, and was informed that indeed it was. So they sent out a plumber, who looked at the heater, couldn't find a problem, and said it must be a problem with the boiler. So HMS sent out an HVAC guy, who of course couldn't find anything wrong and said that it must be a problem with the water heater.
When I called HMS to find out what happens next, they bounced me up to their case management department, who told me that my problem wasn't covered anyway. They also pointed out that their repair person had overcharged me, given that he hadn't actually conducted any repairs. End of my very helpful interaction with HMS. This pretty typical - spend money, go to a lot of trouble, and end up right back at square one (except poorer and more frustrated than when you started). To be fair, HMS has promised to go back and listen to the audio of my call to see whether I was told that the issue was covered when I originally called in to file the claim. But I think the odds of them actually doing that are zero.
Bronwyn – thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We appreciate you as a customer, and want to make every claim experience excellent, and in this instance we did not meet this goal. We left you a voicemail message with our contact information. Thanks - Heather

With TotalProtect, I haven't had any problems in getting things fixed. I call them and they were very friendly. Also, the technicians that they sent out did quality work. Over a month ago, my brand new dishwasher went out on me and TotalProtect replaced it. I paid them $75 and that was all it cost me. They do what they say and I'm really happy with them.

HMS came with the house when we bought it and we've had it for 15 or 20 years. To submit a claim, I go on to the internet, tell them what the issue is and then they assign a company to come out and look at my issue. Then, I pay my deductibles to the company when they arrive. I've also tried calling them and their reps are fine and they're very friendly. Also, it's always been pleasant with the technicians they've sent out. The quality of work is good and if it wasn't, I'd call back and complain. They've always been very helpful overall.

When I bought my place in 2010, it came with the free first year of HMS Home Warranty and so far, it has been a good service. I had a few problems, but that was with the contractor that was sent out here. When I called in for a claim on the furnace, the guys they sent out didn't know what they were doing. They got the $100 deductible then they came up with some excuse, left and we never heard from them. But the other contractor, Mallorick, was really professional and fixed the furnace within the day. That's why I requested for them to come out when the other contractor came up with an excuse of a bird was stuck in the flue. Mallorick went back and got it fixed. There was just something hung up there, but he got it unstuck and didn't have to take anything apart. So HMS is really good about getting everything straightened out. They were really nice and helpful, and I like the whole warranty service. I'd recommend them.

I trusted totalprotect, but they disappeared and sent me to deal directly with claim company and request estimates to repair a microwave that was supposed to be repaired under the warranty. After 3 months!
I did a claim on 3/13/17 in Consumer Affairs with no answer.
They told me they were to change my microwave, after several months of the same claim. The date of the delivery date they called the microwave was broken on the delivery and they need to order a new one. After that they disappear and never answer my calls. I had to cancel my plan and they never replace the microwave their provider broke:

She had my situation resolved in less than a few hours, Heather has saved me as a customer. She was very professional and followed up with me timely after receiving documentation that she requested, she even informed me of more coverage under my policy that my repair qualified for.

I wish there was a way to give 0 stars. Customer service is horrible every one gives you different information. Filed a claim for two toilets and a shower valve. filing the claim was easy but getting the claim paid or even acknowledge was the WORST! They sent out a plumber right away that demanded my deductible before he even looked at what needed to be done he accepted the job and said he would be able to fix it then he turned rude. He showed up when no one was home then called my cell phone and yelled about no one being there for him to complete the job when I arrived to let him in he jacked up the toilets more and left calling total protect back and giving them a crap story about not being able to fix the shower valve because they need to tear down a wall. Called total protect spoke to 3 reps that offered different information until I got frustrated and asked to speak to member service to cancel my policy. When I spoke to member services I was again given different information and was told that if I found someone to do the work they would pay out what they were going to pay the person that they sent that couldn't do the job, so I agreed. Called back a few days later after having the job complete and ONCE AGAIN received different information that member services misinformed me, AGAIN I asked for member services and was kept on hold for over 45 minutes. I would never recommended this rip off plan to not even my worst enemy.... WHAT A JOKE!

When I moved into my home 20 years ago, my furnace had gone out and I had to give up $10,000. So I did some research and found out about TotalProtect Home Warranty. They can service my appliances and I just pay X amount of dollars a month. I have submitted a claim for my washer and dryer, and some plumbing issues. I normally do it over the phone because I like talking to people. The process was very fast. I'm not on hold a very long time before I can get to a representative. The reps were very friendly and helpful. And they give me three references when I call them.
Every contractor that they sent out has been very professional and prompt. I only had an issue one time when my furnace had gone out during winter. They had to do something outside and replace the coil. But the guy wasn't reliable. He kept saying, "I'm on the job. I'm coming." And we were in here freezing. But otherwise, my 20 years with TotalProtect has been great. I would definitely recommend TotalProtect to friends and to all homeowners.

Our heat pump quit working right before Christmas 2016. We contacted our service guy and he indicated that it was a total loss so we contacted Total Protect Home warranty about the replacement of our heat pump since we had a contract with them. Ever since, we have gotten nothing but the run around from their service department and customer service. Call and wait on hold for 1/2 hour or more, calls get dropped so you have to start over.... We were without a heat pump for more than 6 weeks while they tried to find someone to come and service or replace our unit. The first company from Virginia, the state we live in, never called, never showed for appointments. The second company was from out of state and could not do the permitting and inspection because they were unlicensed in Virginia. After weeks of chasing this around and finally getting a quote from one of their out of state vendors, we determined to get this work done ourselves and there was an agreement that they would pay a cash settlement once we had paid for the service and submitted documentation. We submitted all of the documentation they told us we needed for our payment, service and replacement of the heat pump on February 19th. Contacted Total Protect today, March 12th, to find out where our reimbursement check was and they are requesting further documentation, even items that were included in the documents we submitted, more runaround. More stalling tactics every time we contact them..... further deception and delay in an already awful case of customer service and support......we are totally exasperated with this company and would recommend that you run away and take your home warranty needs to another company.....

My wife's cousins got TotalProtect and they researched it and said it was pretty good. I got the information from him and I looked it over. I talked to the people there and they said it was a good thing, so that's what I wanted and I went on. The first claim we had was when we had that sewer guy come out here and do the work. It was bad. The guy came up four times and still didn't get it unplugged. I told them if they ever hire that guy to come out to my house again, I would drop them. I also told them he was taking them for a left and right but nobody would listen.
They didn't say anything about sending somebody else so, I hired this other person/company to do it. This guy that we hired came out and did it in 45 minutes. He had everything cleared out and put a new clean out. Now, our garage door went haywire and the guy they sent this time was good and did perfectly. So, the only bad thing we had was with that first company they sent. After that, it's been good so far.

I had asked the seller of our house for a recommendation to a home warranty company and they've referred us to HMS. Submitting a claim with them has been excellent. I've done both over the phone and online submission but I prefer to do it online if I can as it's faster. But it only takes a couple of minutes to get to somebody when I call, and my interactions with their reps are usually very quick and very precise. They are good at what they do. I give them my number and tell them what the problem is. They would give me a phone number and the contractor to get a hold of, and tell me to give them a shout if I have any questions. Then they send me a confirmation email.
The technicians are also very good and are very qualified. We've had plumbing, electrical, and heating and cooling issues, and I've been very pleased with the technicians that AHS sends out. When it's July in Florida and the air conditioner stops and it's 98 degrees to 98% humidity, it's terrible. I call AHS and they get somebody who comes right out. AHS has been great and the warranty has paid for itself numerous times. I have recommended them to friends. And they, including both of my children, have purchased the warranties.

A friend told me how good TotalProtect was, how his water heater in his town home had went and how they came over and took care of his water heater. I told him it sounded like a good plan. Submitting claims to them have been really easy. I used to call but the one that I had on my water heater was the first time I ever went to the computer and did it. As soon as I put the claim in, they came back to me with a claim number and the company who would be doing the work. They were always on-time and found out what the problem was - either replace a fuse in my refrigerator or my air-conditioning unit. I've also had electrical problems with the washer and dryer.
I've only had a problem since this last time with the water heater with the company that was chosen to come here and work on the water heater. They said I had a burned out element and it took them about 10 days to come back and put the element in. They kept telling me they were coming and then didn't show up, or call me. Then they showed up and said they were here to put the element in without calling and telling me they were coming.
Nevertheless, the work has been great. When they finally put the element in eventually, I turned the water on and it was getting hot so I'm assuming that the element worked right. I recommended TotalProtect to many of my friends and I've had at least two sign up. They've been good to us that we haven't had any problems with our claims being take care of rapidly and on-time. The companies they work with and their customer service are good. Every time I would call up or we get in touch with them, they were very professional.

When I bought this house in December 2015, the homeowners offered the HMS Home Warranty. And right before it was up, we put the house on the market. So, with the house being a 26 year-old house, it was no-brainer to offer it to the potential new buyers. Of the two times I've used them, I've had no problems. However, this last time, I don't know where the miscommunication was, but I got a couple of phone calls after it was over, wanting to know if I was satisfied or if the work had been done. I didn't mind answering the phone call once, but I kept getting phone calls and it got a little irritating.
When I called both times, someone picked up the phone, started the claim and then gave me someone to contact, which I contacted. However, the last one was a bit tricky because I didn't know whether it was an electrical issue or a plumbing issue. So, having a 50-50 chance to call the correct tradesman, the first time I chose was wrong. I called the plumber and he came out here and I had to pay him the $100 deductible. And then an electrician came out, changed the circuit breaker and fixed the problem. They did waive me having to pay another deductible because it was all part of the same problem. But it took a bit of coaxing the supervisor to be convinced that I shouldn't have to pay two deductibles. The technicians have all been great. I haven't had any super huge issues where big things have to be replaced. So, hopefully I don't have to. But if I do, it'd be nice to get the same type of treatment and respect. But so far, it has been good.

TotalProtect Home Warranty is fairly easy to work with. I always call in my claims, and the worst part is getting someone on the phone. I did the last couple of claims through their automated machine and that went well. Typically the technician comes out within a couple of days, but it takes a while when they use the Sears service. If I had a problem with anybody, it's normally with the Sears people because they never have parts and they have to come back later. I've had that situation a couple of times over the years. I had a problem with one technician this month, but TotalProtect assigned it to another company and things were handled very promptly. 90% of the time the technicians are excellent. I'm happy with TotalProtect, and I constantly recommend them.

For about two years now, we've been using HMS Home Warranty. The last time we tried to do a claim, it was for our commode. The contracted company here in Nashville came out but the tech didn’t even try to see what the problem was. He didn’t have any customer service at all and he assumed that somebody was playing on the commode and broke it. We’re the only two in the house. I’m 60 and my husband is 57. Who would be playing on the commode at that age to break it?
Water keep coming through my other bathroom and that’s when we found out that the flush was broken underneath the commode. I had to go and get things done myself. I had another plumber come out and look. In the end, we had two plumbers out. One didn’t do anything and I had to pay 200 and some dollars for the other one. I sent HMS an invoice of what the cost was and they said they were going to reimburse me. But I haven’t gotten it yet.

I submitted an online claim when my furnace stopped working, and the process was very easy. I answered the questions, and they gave me a telephone number of who to call right away, which I did. It was a Friday night and they contacted me the next morning at around 8 o’clock and they were here by 10 o’clock.
The gentleman who came in was nice enough. It ended up it wasn’t my furnace. I needed batteries in my thermostat. I didn’t even know there were batteries in there. So I learned, and next time I’ll be changing them. I figured while he was at the house, maybe he could vacuum the furnace cover because he said it was dusty, but he wouldn’t do it. I thought that was strange. So I paid him his $100 and out the door he went. It was the most expensive three batteries I’ve ever spent in my life. But that had nothing to do with TotalProtect. I get to book every year and I know what's covered and what's not, so usually there are no surprises. For example, I just had a water heater replaced and the installation that was done when it was initially put in many years ago doesn't meet today's code so they had to do some modifications and I know that they don't pay for that. A home warranty was something I always wanted because when most homeowners purchase a home, they don't think about the breakdowns that happen during the process of paying for the home. A lot of times, those expenses are not accounted for. You can get so many problems in the home that just wears over, financially and mentally, and the home ends up vacant because you can't repair them because the money is not there. That's why I got a policy from TotalProtect and I liked their service.
Once you call TotalProtect's claims department to tell them what's going on, they give you a reference number, then they contact someone that is available within the area and get someone out. It's very simple and easy. It's better than going out yourself having to find someone. Moreover, the reps were very knowledgeable of their jobs and they show empathy for the problems that you're having. The contractors that they sent out were very good, fast and knowledgeable. TotalProtect has provided excellent service.

The service provider for the water heater is great however the warranty company has been horrible. It has been almost 2 weeks and we have no resolution and no hot water.
We have twin babies in our home and advised them of this when the water heater went out. We were told this was not an emergency but the turnaround time would be 3 days. Again we are at 10 days and they still haven't completed their process nor sent the required paperwork to order the water heater. I have spent over 8 hours on the phone with them as well as supervisors and the one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. The last supervisor Ty was rude and placed me on hold for about 10 minutes. I consistently re-up with HMS Home Warranty every year and I have two properties on it. It seems we get great service and it's been a good deal financially. Neither of the houses is brand new and so they do have the occasional requirement. It's nice having a single point of contact and I don't have to have primes and subs. I go to HMS and they fix whatever it is. There's a central number I call in and they contact me back with a referral to a local company who specializes in whatever the malfunction is and then I contact the company and give them the claim number I got from HMS. The contractor company comes out and makes the repair or gives an estimate, clears it with HMS if I say it's okay, and once they reconcile all that, they go ahead and conduct the work. If there are incidental or extraneous costs that aren't covered then I gotta pick up the difference, but it's usually de minimis.
I've never had a bad technician who comes out and they're always good. The last one I had was so outstanding. There's never a go-back with the work they perform and never had to do re-repair. I get that a lot when I had to deal with these things on my own as the techs don't show up or don't complete the repair or the estimate isn't what I get. But I get none of that with HMS. Oh and the problem was that we were having to light the stove with a lighter. It won't start. October to March... and it still won't start. I called numerous times to follow up. Finally, they said they'd send out a new stove. It arrived today with the installation crew who said they can't install it because it's a non standard steel gas pipe and they only can install with flexible hoses. I called Total Protect again. They said from a steel pipe to a hose is an upgrade... and that I need to pay for a plumber to come out. Five months trying to solve this problem. 5 crews came out here. I have a stove in a box on our kitchen floor. I'm still lighting my stove manually. Here are my issues: 1/ there is no follow up. If I hadn't called, no one would have closed out my case. 2/ Bait and switch. When you sign up, they say it's all included, parts, service and everything. HMS Home Warranty was a company that was recommended back in 2000, when I bought my home. My claim submissions were always very easy because I didn't have a lot of stuff to deal with. First of all, I'd always look in my booklet to see if the issue is covered. Then I would call and state whatever problem I had, and they would tell me if I could have it fixed. There was only one thing they told me wasn't covered, and it was a pipe that burst in the basement and froze, but they still sent a guy out. Anything else I've ever called them about, they've sent somebody and had the problem repaired or fixed. All their work is contracted.
I had a problem with my washer once. I called them and the tech from the first company they sent out told me it was mold. I'm not a washing machine tech, but where do I get mold from in a washing machine? I called them back and told them to send somebody else out. They did, and this other tech found out the problem. He said it was some oil in my bearing that was getting on my clothes, so HMS paid for a new washer. They gave me the total amount that I could purchase the washer for and I did.
Except for that one instance, all the contractors they've ever sent out to do any work were very nice and did their job. Most of what they've done was replacement, like my furnace, air conditioning system, and garbage disposal. I had a leak in my closet once, because I have copper piping and something had pinched the pipe, so there was a little leak. The tech repaired that part and I had to repair the wall after he opened it up, but the hole wasn't big. So far, I've had good service from them. If I have not, I wouldn't stay with them. I have also recommended them to other people.

We purchased a house about 2 months ago, and everything looked fine. Then one day I found the sump pump kept running even the water was low in the well. I just unplugged the sump pump and let the backup pump take over. It was great to know that my HMS plan covers sump pump. So I filed a claim to HMS. HMS sent a service man to my house and replaced the old sump pump with a new one. When he did so, I was not home and my wife did. Once I came back from work, and checked the new pump, I found the power of backup pump was not working, and the power light was not even on.
I called HMS and let them know the situation, and I was told that they were going to send the same service man to come to check. Unfortunately, that night we had a thunderstorm, and in the morning, my basement was flooding. The service man came here and told me that the reason was the new pump was not working because of the floating switch was not good, and that the new pump was ordered by HMS. Meanwhile, the backup pump was not working, too.
Now HMS does not want to cover the power of backup pump, and does not want to cover the damage caused by the flooding in the basement, too. They kept saying that the insurance does not cover those. I just want to tell HMS that you should fix the problem you caused. You provided a crap pump, and sent a crap serviceman to fail my working backup pump, and now you told me that you had nothing to do with all the those?

I don't really know where the problem's lying. If there's something uncovered, it needs to be discussed between the two of them before it comes to me. And when I called in to talk to the warranty people, they told me to call the plumbers. That should all be happening before the work is done, not like they should be coming to me telling me I owe $90 now, and they're already gone.
But I'm not completely unsatisfied with HMS. Their customer service team has been fine and everyone's been friendly. HMS was part of the sale when I bought the house and I've had it since closing in August. I've submitted a claim once for my water heater. It was my first time and I did it online. It was fairly easy and their website is user-friendly. It was the Monday to Christmas and they got somebody out here the next day. The technician knew the area and knew what he was doing. He was very quick to get in, assess the problem and get the new water heater. He was done within an hour of coming back with the part.

Bank of America referred me to TotalProtect years ago, and I’ve been with them for over 10 years. I submitted a claim with them recently when the furnace went out at 1 o’clock in the morning. There was no flame to it, and I couldn’t get it to respond so I called TotalProtect that morning to let them know it was out. And then at 9:30 that morning, the furnace kicked back on. I was talking to the D & D Mechanical. They were going to come out here, but they said there’d be a service call and probably I’d be obligated to that. As long as the furnace is working, there’s not much sense in coming out. So, the gal at D & D Mechanical said they’d hold the work order in place through this week and see how it goes. If the furnace is still working, they’d just close it out.
I’m very pleased with the way they responded to me and to the guys that they send out. D & D Mechanical and Smedley Plumbing have been out here. In all cases, whoever they’ve referred out had very quality workmanship and everything’s been done fine. I have no problems with it at all. All in all, I’m totally satisfied with TotalProtect and I would not hesitate to recommend. In fact, I tell people how to get a hold of TotalProtect and get some insurance there.

I have been using HMS Home Warranty since I moved in last December. Their website is easy to use and it's also easy to submit a claim online. I just had to use the phone when I had no heat and the plumber said he was busy all day. So I had to call for another one. But their reps were very helpful on the phone and the plumbers or whoever I used were very good too. Even when I use somebody out of the network, they send me the difference or the money back quickly.

When we bought this condo, we asked for a home warranty and the realtor offered HMS Home Warranty. We accepted it and so far, I've only submitted one claim. It was for my furnace that went out which happened in December. Since I don’t have an email access and I wanted immediate response, I filed it over the phone which was easier. The claims reps tried to answer my questions. However, they were a little vague on the next step. The first woman I talked to said that I should hear from them within four hours. But I didn’t hear from them in eight hours, so I called back.
I know that a lot of companies end up using customer service people from other countries. The second woman that I spoke with had no idea where Indiana was. It didn’t register that a furnace was an important deal and I needed to get it fixed. So, I ended up calling someone. They just had to call and get approved. I was determined to get a response and get some service so the rep put it on an emergency status and said that I could go ahead and contact somebody. Up until that time, they didn’t know that I made a contact. I finally got somebody out here and they took care of it and it was perfect. They did a great job and they did what they needed to do. They were very timely, courteous and followed up. I’m satisfied with them. There was something else wrong with it from what I originally thought it was. And they went ahead and authorized that all in the same claim. We got our reimbursement check back yesterday. Overall, it was a good experience.

The seller purchased HMS Home Warranty when we bought the house in July. Submitting claims has been very easy. At first, we did it on the phone, but we've been doing it online the last two times since it's a very simple procedure doing it on the computer. The service people that came have been very knowledgeable and fixed the problem. We've had some issues with our refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher and the air conditioning, and they've all been repaired very well. However, we're still having some issues with the refrigerator and freezer. They've been here a couple of times for that and it's functioning well right now, so we're monitoring it. Other than that, I've been very happy with the service and the follow-up. Also, I've recommended a couple of people that they look into this company.

TotalProtect sent me something through the mail and I was with American Home Shield at the time. It seemed like the rate was a little cheaper so I decided to try them out. I usually submit my claims on the phone which is an easy process. And the reps I spoke with and the techs who came out were very professional. One of the techs even had to go up in the attic during a repair. I'm pleased with their service.
However, when a service guy came to fix my air conditioning unit in winter time, I mentioned to him that the whole unit wasn't working as well when it was warm. He told me that he saw what the problem was and that he would order the parts. But when I spoke to the person in the office because I didn't hear anything else about it, the rep told me that she didn't see anything on the report about that. Then she was explaining that since it was a problem, even though it was the same system but it was winter time that they would have to do a separate order when it gets hot. However, I was kind of disappointed that the tech didn't pass on the information that he told me he was going to pass on. Except for that little incident, the service people that TotalProtect sent over have been quick and timely whenever I called in my order.

HMS replaced our old Rheem hot water heater with an American Hot Water Heater after it started to leak. The American brand hot water heater was noticeably different when it was installed, hot water was slow to flow, it was only 98 degrees at its hottest and it produced enough hot water for a 5-minute shower, a load of laundry, or washing dishes before having to wait for the heater to build up more hot water. HMS took our calls but never took any action. They promised a return phone call but never called back.
Now that the American Hot Water Heater they provided just over six months ago is not currently functioning at all. I am being told that since it is past six months, I have to go through the manufacturer warranty process to have it repaired or replaced. HMS told me the responsible thing would be for me to hire a repair company, have it diagnosed and then contact the manufacturer American Hot Water. That is why I continue to annual pay HMS Home Warranty fees for them to take care of these types of things, especially when they provide an inferior replacement Water heater from a company that has documented poor quality products and issues honoring their product warranties. HMS should be taking care of this issue, not forcing me to deal with the manufacturer.

The home warranty company had to send out a different company to fix my furnace because the initial company (Reeves) kept saying they couldn't find the part and kept miss informing the warranty company. The new company that was sent out fixed our furnace the same day they came out. When I spoke with a supervisor from the warranty company, she assured me that they were looking into the complaint that we had against Reeves and more so because they kept giving them the wrong information.
Original Review: Feb. 20, 2017
This complaint is in regard to the companies that TotalProtect sends out to fix whatever's broken. They sent Reeves air conditioning and heating out and it is going into week 3 and our furnace still hasnt been fixed. When we called them (Reeves), the lady is very unprofessional and has an attitude when questions are asked. The guy from Reeves came out to fix our furnace and was up there for 2.5 hours only to come down and say that the warranty company ordered the wrong part. Why it took 2.5 hours for him to figure that out is beyond me. Frustrated with the treatment and customer service, we go online to look up the company's reviews and they are horrible. So now my frustration is also with TotalProtect because it seems like they should do an evaluation of customer satisfaction with the companies they dispatch to fix claims. On Thursday (2/16/17) the lady from Reeves called and said that they were picking up "the right" part for our furnance and that the technician would be out to fix our furnace on Monday (2/20/17) between 1pm-5pm. Well it is now Monday and currently i am waiting for the technician to call or come, as I write this review...mind you, it is now 4:48pm and we have not seen or heard from anyone but as soon as we call (either the warranty company or Reeves) i bet that there is going to be some lame excuse as to why no one showed rather than taking responsibility for the lack of professionalism. Also, I want to add that when I called TotalProtect Thursday (2/16/17), i asked how do i put in a complaint against the warranty company and Reeves and the customer Rep said that a supervisor would call me back. No one has called, hence this review. It's funny how there is never an issue for either company to make sure payment is made on time but can't make sure to get the work done in a timely matter. This is going into week 3 of this claim. I have a 2 year old and thankfully the weather hasn't been too cold or too hot or we would be ** out of luck.

When I bought my house, the seller had a one year warranty from HMS and it was transferred to me. I've renewed the warranty every year and this is my eighth year. I stuck with HMS because the price is reasonable. Moreover, I get a quick turnaround when it comes to reporting a problem that I have to customer service. I don't like getting the runaround when trying to get something repaired.
Their claims reps are very informative. They would ask specific questions, take my information and sign the ticket while I'm on the phone. They always offer to try and reach out to the service provider to contact me. I had one vendor that I had to call repeatedly to schedule an appointment but still, all the other times that I've had claims, I've gotten a quick response. Also, there was a little confusion when I submitted a claim online. If I have more than one request, I didn't know if I could combine them into one ticket or I should make one ticket per request. Once I figured that part out, it was a smooth process.
I had two different problems. One was electrical and the other was for garbage disposal. Both of their guys came and provided great customer service. They assessed the problem and quickly did what they needed to do to repair. The electrical guy was extremely knowledgeable. I had some other problems and was thinking of submitting a claim. He told me that it was not going to be covered and offered some suggestions on alternative motors so I can solve my problem.
The plumber took the extra step of replacing a part which I had purchased with no additional charge. I was planning on doing it myself but he said that since he already had opened the toilet, he'd swap the part out for me. That was unusual but I really appreciated that. I always recommend HMS to my friends. I like their quickness and their communication process.

A year or two before we acquired a home warranty, I had moved in with my mother and she had a whole bunch of plumbing issues under the kitchen sink. Pipes had broken, and this cost us a lot of money. I'm on disability and she's a senior citizen, so it was very difficult for us and we figured the warranty was worth the money in paying for repairs in case that happened again. We signed up with TotalProtect and when the tech came out for the electrical work, it only cost us $85.
However, the only problem we had when we submitted the claim was with the payment and that was kind of a bummer because the tech was supposed to be coming out that day but then he told us that we couldn't pay the way that we intended. The paperwork said that we could pay the $85 fee with cash or credit card when the tech comes out. Our local town hall's Human Services Dept. was helping us with the payment and they were going to put it on the credit card. The lady at the Human Services Dept. gave me her cell phone number so that when he got here, she was going to pay with the company credit card from town hall. But when the electrician called me that morning, he said that he would only take a check or cash, and that he wouldn't take a credit card payment which is strange for a company. The claims representatives were also surprised that he wasn't taking a credit card payment.
So, it took us an extra two weeks for the tech to come out. We were partially without electricity for two weeks, having electricity in half the house and not having it in half, because we had to go through the town hall, and he had to call them and submit an invoice. The town hall had to keep records through their Human Services Dept. and they weren't just going to give us cash, and they needed his license ID number, so then they had to cut a check for us.
Finally, when the tech came out, he found the problem and the repair work was all done in 45 minutes. I told him about an outlet in the living room that I had seen burn. Otherwise, if I hadn't told him that, it probably would have been a lot much longer process because he said, "Oh, thanks for telling me," and that's exactly where the problem was. As soon as he opened that outlet, he found that the wires had fried and he fixed that within 10 minutes, then he was ready to go downstairs and replace fuse boxes. The lights came right back on. There was also a light in our kitchen that had been out for two years, that another electrician told us we had to have totally rewired, and after he did the electrical work, that light came on, too. I'm definitely going to call TotalProtect again if we have any other issues.

Their reps are very helpful and have explained things. When they say my claim is not covered, I'd check in the manual and that's what it says.
The technicians have been friendly. If they have to order a part, they tell me and it comes on the time that they had indicated it. They've come back and repaired it. Total Protect's copay has gone up and things are much more expensive these days. I wouldn’t have been with it as long as I have if I’m having problems with the service. When I went to my bank they had a thing over there talking about TotalProtect and I saw what it had covered if you had that type of program so I signed up for it. I had an electrical problem and the guy who came out was pleasant. I told him that the light switch on the wall wasn't working. But when he checked it out he said there was nothing wrong. Then he said he went around the room and behind my entertainment center is where the problem was. He told me he changed the wall socket over there and that I wouldn't have any more problems.
I had done my outdoor decorations for Christmas, waited to get dark so I could turn it on and see how it looked. So, the first night I turned them on and I was satisfied with what was done. Then the next night I went to turn on my Christmas tree light in the house and it wouldn't come on. I looked outside and nothing outside had come on too. I called the man and told him the problem. This was on a Saturday night when I called and he went to tell me, “We don’t work on weekends," and he said I would have to pay him the money for coming out after hours. He then said he would call me back Monday, but I didn’t hear anything from them until it was Wednesday. They called and wanted to set up an appointment but they would come out on Thursday. I told them, "Don’t even worry about it."
So then I just moved from one side of the room to the other and put the Christmas tree up. I ran one of those heavy cords behind my sofa. I did that and I went in the back way because I had that outlet to the back on my deck and I used that to hook my lights up outdoors. That went on until when I put it up again. In December I called and a nice man from Relay came out. He changed some outlets for me and fixed some places. Then everything went out upstairs so I called TotalProtect and they told me to call the man back because I had 180 days. So he came back and he went through the house and checked. Since then I haven’t had any more problems out of that. I would recommend TotalProtect.

HMS Home Warranty was recommended by the realtor when we bought a property. We just trusted that and we've been very happy with it. We have one claim. The water heater was leaking, I called and they immediately took care of it. No big hassle, they said, "We'll get an appointment... here's the person. We'll have them call you and set up the time." They approved whatever needed to happen and they talked to the people that came out. Their claims representatives were very knowledgeable. They knew what I needed to do, they're really amazing.
The people that installed the new water heater were magnificent and we're really pleased. All the young guys work for Joe Lay Company. I was amazed at their talent and ability to do some plumbing. They were young men, probably 20-something. They didn't waste a lot of time fixing it and they were very respectful of my questions. Just really a great experience. It was definitely a pleasant interaction. This experience makes me want to maintain the warranty. It would be nice to keep in case there is another problem. Overall they really did a fantastic job. You hear how insurance companies run into all kinds of trouble. People talk about that. I've never talked to anybody that had really such a good experience as I had, so I was wowed!

The technician that came out did a really good job, explained everything and was really friendly. However, the deductible used to be $85. When they came to solve the problem about my heat in December, the deductible was $100. I’ve never gotten information on why they added the extra dollars If they were going to raise the deductible, it seemed like they should have sent me a letter. Nevertheless, I would recommend them.

The people that I bought my house from passed HMS over to me and I've had it for at least 16 years. I stuck with them because it covers everything. I always call for my claims, then they give me a claim number, and give me a company's number. But HMS call them too and set up an appointment. And then, if they set up an appointment for me, they call me back immediately to tell me the details. The last time I submitted a claim, my sink was leaking. They came out and it took a couple of days to do the job. It wasn't a problem because I had a bucket under the sink, so it wouldn't drip anywhere. The repair guy was a very nice man, and he actually installed my water softener here a couple of years ago.
HMS saves me a lot of money. The furnace and heat pump cost is very expensive. It would range about $8,000, but they put all that in for me for $300. I had to pay them $100 and a different wiring cost for another 200 bucks, which was fine with me because I got a new furnace and heat pump. So, I am very happy with HMS.

TotalProtect was good. I called their telephone number and they gave me the name of the person to call to fix the furnace. It took a while for them to get out here, which I was concerned at because I care for my 88-year-old aunt. But I do have a fireplace and I do have an electric heater that I put in her room. The problem was that first, they said it was the master computer chip. Then they came and brought a new one and brought it back and my furnace still wouldn't start.
It was also confusing 'cause I called the office and I said they told me they would have the part in by Monday but no one's called me yet. The rep said, "No. According to my paperwork, your work order is completed." And I said it's not. So, she called technician back and she called me back. She said she couldn't read the guy's writing. So, they made me an appointment and they came out again. And that time, he was here around three hours working, trying to figure out why he couldn't get the furnace to start. But he kept working on it and he finally figured it out and it's worked fine since. The tech did a great job.

My realtor uses HMS Home Warranty the most and has the most success with. So, she told me to use them. Claim submission is an efficient process. It's simple to submit claims. Somebody contacts me right away and comes out. The technicians have all been very professional, efficient and did the job. I had one instance where the vendor was a little hard to get a hold of so HMS referred me to somebody else. The reps have been great. Being a single female, it's nice to deal with professional people. I would never know what to expect sometimes when it comes to home repairs or anything that traditionally a lot of men handle. Coming from that standpoint, my experience has been great and positive. Everyone was honest, did a good work, and I didn't feel odd having anyone in the house.

I signed a contract with Total Protect because of an endorsement I received from my credit union Pentagon Federal. I have had this contract approximately 2 years. The fist time I submitted a claim they were pleasant and responded promptly with solving the problem. However, I recently submitted another claim regarding the overflow drainage pan on my water heater. I know this because my homeowners insurance adjuster looked at the issue and determined that was the problem. So instead of filing a claim with my adjuster which would have been more than my deductible ($500) my adjuster suggested I contact Total Protect to do the necessary repairs. After submitting the referral a technician was dispatched and afterwards I received a phone call from a Total Protect representative who identified herself as Chelsea. She stated the call was being recorded and proceeded to tell me that I would have to pay $975.00 for permits and code compliance according to Section 4, para 5 of my contract indicating the hot water heater needed to be replaced. I asked her how much did it cost to replace the unit including labor,, she stated she was not allowed to disclose that information. I then explained to her I don't understand how the unit needed to be replaced when my homeowner insurance adjuster stated it only needed a minor repair. She became argumentative and I told her that I was not going to have the service done. She then stated that I could still have the service done and they would cover up to $675 in repairs if I chose to use a different company. Within, 15 minutes later she called back and stated Total Protect would not be able to do anything because the unit was installed incorrectly. Question, how did the unit go from needing to being replaced, to being not part serviceable because it was installed incorrectly? Totally confused I asked to speak with a supervisor. She transferred the call to a supervisor named "Tai", who basically said nothing but confirmed what Chelsea stated. Needless, to say I will not be using their service to resolve this issue as it stands. Hopefully, someone from Total Protect will respond to this complaint and a resolution will be met. I kinda got the feeling they wanted me to cancel my contract with them.

HMS Home Warranty was part of the package when I purchased a house in July. We've only had to submit claims three times, two of which the staff were able to help. It was a little confusing on how things worked at first. But they gave me the name of the service people that I needed to call, which involved Derheimer's in all cases because they were all plumbing issues. Derheimer's came out quickly and performed admirably. They're very personable, professional, and walked me through what my issues were and what they were going to do to fix them. The claim went quite smoothly. I was very pleased.
The third time, I had to make a couple of calls because whoever was on the phone with me at the time was very confused and kept having to put me on hold to get clarifications from a supervisor. There's a good chance that I'll be extending another year at the end of the year of the policy. I'm a single woman and I don't know how to do a lot of things. So, I have to rely on the service.

I've been with TotalProtect for years. I'm getting up in age and I can't do the things I used to do. The cost of repairs today and getting repairman are astronomical. So with a big house and a lot of appliances, it seemed reasonable that we get a home warranty. I'm satisfied with the service I've received. I've submitted claims several times over the years. Usually, I place a phone call, I get a quick connect and a reference to whatever it is I need, and within the first couple of hours everything is established as far as when things will be repaired or scheduled.
I have had some difficult repairs in the past, one with the freezer malfunctioning. TotalProtect sent a repair guy out, put a fix on it, and within 30 days, it didn't work. They sent another guy out and this happened four or five times and the fix would last only about a month. I told TotalProtect to not send the repair person to my house anymore. Several people came out and they didn't seem to have the wherewithal and a knowledge base to put a complete fix. It's annoying because it's a freezer and you've got food in there. So, they sent me someone else.
The fellow came out and before I could tell him what was done, he said he already knows and named the company. He said most of his repairs are repairing what the other contractor does. He fixed the freezer. It's been a couple of years now and it never happened again. If TotalProtect doesn't have a good repairman, I could wind up with a new refrigerator when it was a simple fix. It's to my benefit to a certain degree, but to TotalProtect, even with the amount of money I put into this all in all, it's still their loss.

I originally chose Total Protect because of the reviews. I should have listed to some of them about how they will do anything not to repair or replace what has failed. I had a recent new plan with them where it include my heat pump. Roughly 6 weeks later a notice the air coming out of my vents was no longer warm. Everything was in good working condition prior to signing up. When signing up, I asked when the inspection would take place. They told me it was not necessary as long as everything was in good working condition. I placed a claim with them and stated this plumbing, AC and heating company would be contacting me. They never did and I had to call this company. I will not mention this company's name. This ac/heating company shows up in an unmarked, no company named van. My first hint of a problem. The technician inspects my unit and stated I have a couple of leaks. Something to mention. He asked my what I thought the problem was when he showed up. If I was a professional AC/heating guy, I wouldn't have to hire anyone. Hint # 2. He came into my house and stated there should be no reason why this should not be approved by Total Protect. The next day I called Total Protect and they stated it was declined because of wear and tear and pictures showing rust and corrosion. I said that was really strange because this was a newer unit and I couldn't see any rust. I said I wanted to see the pictures and they said they didn't have them yet. Then the CSR stated they haven't received the pictures yet. Very strange! When I contacted the service company, the same technician was extremely rude and said he didn't have any pictures and basically hang up on me. I called Total Protect back and spoke to a supervisor. She kept on referring to something about how the link couldn't have happened in 10 days and this was caused by wear and tear. I didn't know a supervisor, wherever she was out, could determine when the leak occurred. Home warranty plans are meant to protect your property. You purchase plans for protection down the road. Everything has wear and tear and to tell someone it's not covered by wear and tear is a joke. I'm out approximately $268 for a broken heat pump and still not repaired. Yes, opt out of the plan and of course they charged me for that. You can hire this company if you like, but do you due diligence first.
Jim - It sounds like our coverage did not meet your expectations. Please know that we adhere to the warranty Agreement when determining covered and non-covered failures for your AC unit. While we understand that this experience does not match the type of service we aim to provide, we appreciate you taking the time the share your experience. Sincerely - John

You just call them up to submit a claim, explain what's going on, they give the claim number and you call and/or they help you contact the actual company that can do the work. And then, they come out and take care of it. Most of the contractors have been extremely professional and they have done what they needed to get the job the done. Everything has worked to what we had expected so it feels like we're getting our value's worth of security and at the same time, we're able to get things done.

I called HMS on 12/16/16 when my tenants notified me that the washer was not cycling appropriately. On 12/19/16 they sent a contractor, PAS, LLC, troubleshoot. The gentleman stated it was probably the timer or transmission but we notify the warranty company and get the part ordered; should take 7-10 business days. Realizing the timing and the holidays pending we expected longer and I set the expectations with my tenant. On 1/10, when neither my tenant or I had heard anything from the contractor I committed to calling HMS back for an update. I called on 1/11 and was informed that the contractor didn't even submit the diagnostic until 1/10. They approved the part that morning and committed to shipping. While I was out of town for work on 1/18, the contractor offered to come by in 2 days and I advised him that was unacceptable due the already unexplained wait.
They showed up on 1/19, installed the timer and told my tenant that it needed to charge for 30 mins then to call if the washer continued to not operate. It did not. As of today, 1/23, I had not heard from anyone and, mind you, my tenant has not been able to wash clothes since at least 12/16 so I call HMS back. The rep tells me that they approved an offer to replace the unit but could not tell me who offered this to me since I had just spoke to them 4 days prior. I accepted but was told that I need to contact GE Appliances to schedule delivery and install but the young lady could not provide me with GE's contact number. So I go to their website and pick 1 of 3 numbers listed. The GE rep tells me that warranty company calls in with model number, not the consumer. So I call HMS back.
The new rep tells me that now that I've accepted the offer HMS will place the order and it should take 4-5 consecutive days (I did ask about business vs consecutive days) for the replacement washer to arrive and be installed. Bottom line, HMS is poor at setting expectations, recognizing the inconvenience their or their contractor's incompetence and resolving, answering basic questions or managing these projects. I've made two claims in the 8 years I've owned this property and neither has been seamless or timely. My realtor questioned why we've kept them so long and this was before we had to make any claims. We told him that they haven't given us a reason to go elsewhere.
Today, after 2 calls into HMS today alone, I have no choice but to look at alternatives. I've spoken to their cancellation department and hope they've provide all that I need to know but my doubts are screaming. So I am setting funds to the side so I can cancel with this poor organization for both of my properties. It's worth it if they can't handle basic blocking and tackling.

But after six weeks it was a little excessive so I called the state attorney general's office to see if they could help get it resolved and an electrician came and took care of the problem. I paid him his fee and everything was fine. It was bizarre.
Then within two weeks, I got a letter saying that I had called and cancelled the policy and HMS gave me the refund on what was paid. I tried three or four times to get the service, to talk to them and all I got was a recording and no one ever called me back. The warranty by HMS was provided by the man I bought the house from and that's why I was so upset when it got cancelled which I didn't do.

I got a home warranty so if something gets broken, I don't have to worry about scrounging the fee and how I'm gonna get it repaired. When one goes out on retirement, sometimes they don't have the funds there. And being single, at least I have an insurance and it'll be less stress for me because all I have to do is pay the $100 deductible and TotalProtect will work from there as long as it's covered under their guidelines.
I knew of other home warranty providers, but I liked the TotalProtect sales rep. She explained the different policies that they had so I liked her customer service when she reached out to me. But I have had both good and bad scenarios with TotalProtect. The good scenario was when my water boiler and my heat went out. The salesperson who was on the other end tried to do their best to get somebody out here to assist me but unfortunately they had to come the next day.
What I don't like is the package that I have. There's something better out there that they were telling me. It's a little bit more money because to replace my water boiler, I had to give out the additional $100 for them coming out and about $600 something dollars to cover the upgrade. If I had known that they have another package out, I would have enrolled in that package where the only thing I would have been responsible for was just the $100. And this happened all around Christmas so I continued to pay because I needed my heat. But I'm satisfied with what was brought in to replace my unit. And the claims reps who I dealt with were very helpful and understanding. The technicians have also been excellent. I had no problem with them. They were eager to explain stuff that I wasn't aware of and gave me a lot of good pointers for me to look out for. I'm very satisfied. I have already recommended TotalProtect to folks and forwarded them the information for them to reach out to talk to someone from TotalProtect and get insured as well.

He knew what he was doing and didn't take him long to get right to what he needed to get done. He either had the part or it was something that he could do. It was during the cold season and we had no heat so it was a big turnaround for us. It was a whole lot better because the ball got dropped a couple of times previously, but this time it was fine. We didn't have to do a lot of back and forth. The heat went out once before during the same time and they had to order a part. Being cold and waiting on a part and using space heaters are not very pleasant things.
But though we have had some mishaps, I would recommend TotalProtect to most people because I haven't had any problems that they haven't been able to fix and take care of. Almost every home needs a home warranty as it comes in really handy. With quite a bit of money, repairs can become a large pocket all at one time.

My daughter-in-law and I did some research and TotalProtect was the most reliable and had the best statistics. My insurance agent recommended them as well so we chose them.
I've never had any problem at all with submitting a claim and even the last time when they have chosen somebody different, they've allowed me the privilege of having the previous person to come out the last time. That continuity of care really made a big difference for me. The claims rep has always been very courteous, prompt, always kind, and never made me feel like I had to wait or that I wasn't gonna get anywhere. TotalProtect is a company of quality, care, and gets the job done for a reasonable price. I appreciate all they do. The other thing that I really like about them is that I can make a monthly payment or I can pay it all at once.
