I like the service. We've had the coverage for five years and I like how HMS has covered any repairs we’ve needed. They’ve also done all the work in a timely manner. So we’re pretty content with that. My most recent claim was with our heater. It had given out on us and wasn’t powering on at all. We submitted the claim over the phone and then we got a phone call the next day. We started dealing with the contractor after that and they were great. When they came out, they looked at the heating unit and sent out all the information to HMS then we got the service we needed. What we had was replaced.

A few years ago, a neighbor said that TotalProtect worked for her. Everything we had was out of warranty so it just seemed like getting the home warranty was the thing to do. Everything goes fine when we file a claim and I usually do that online. I’ve only dealt with two different contractors and both of the men did a fine job. They answered my questions. But I hate that they keep raising the price of it. They also once sent us a person out to check something out and we had to pay the $125. Other than that, I’m satisfied so far.

There was an issue with the refrigerator and TotalProtect couldn’t quite get everything they needed. But finally, one person came in and said that the fridge was beyond repair. I told them that it's crazy. The refrigerator is only two years old. Then somebody came and they were able to provide a repair. After the repair, the fridge was noisy and it shouldn't be. But other than that, the contractor provided excellent service and dealing with their reps was very good.

It was a friend of ours that suggested HMS and our first experience wasn’t that well. Our AC went out and it took about a month for them to come in. The problem was just more of the company-- trying to get a hold of them and trying to figure out when they’d come in. It was more of a hassle than what it should’ve been. Our recent claim was for our furnace which was not working around Thanksgiving time. It would stop maybe for a day and come back on for two days, and then as time went on, that one day stretched out to maybe four or five days. We called in and tried to get it fixed. It took a couple of companies to get it done around February.

The problem was that the first company said they couldn’t figure out what’s wrong if it’s working when they get there. We have to call when it’s not working, but it was random. When they first came, it was working. They thought it was the thermostat. They went out and bought a new thermostat, put it in, but that wasn’t it. We called them back and when they came in, I went down with them. They opened up the panel, looked at it, blew on a tube, and thought that was it. A day or two later, it started happening again. I asked if HMS could send another company and that other company came in, put a diagnostic thing to tell them what’s wrong, replaced it, and it’s been working ever since. 30 minutes and the tech was done. In five minutes, he knew what was wrong with it and he had to get a motor, came back and put it in, it was done.

I’ve had a couple of claims. I have doubts. I don’t have the confidence in the service I have received so far. The company that HMS established for our area is competent. I had a bathroom issue. I’m in a condo and my neighbor on the floor below me had some damage to her bathroom ceiling. She thought it was coming from something that I was doing in my bathroom so I wanted to check it out and make sure that everything was working okay because I had just bought the condo. This was in January and I closed in January. I got the plumber to come out. He looked at my bathroom, opened up the overflowed drain, looked in there and did some stuff. He also tightened up some gaskets. And then, he went downstairs to our neighbor’s and he decided that the damage to her ceiling was something old and it was, “Don’t worry about it. That’s something from the previous owner.” I was told to not to worry about it.

As a result, a couple weeks ago when I used the bathtub, the water escaped and damaged my neighbor’s ceiling worse than before. So, we’re in a situation where now I’m liable for the damage to her unit, and what should’ve happened was it should have been investigated further and not just putting a band-aid on anything so everything’s cool.

I just talked to HMS if they were gonna charge again, but I don’t have any confidence in the plumber because the plumber is going to come out and say, “Oh, you know, what can we do? And this and that.” And I know that the plumber can’t open up my neighbor’s bathroom ceiling, but I would’ve appreciated a comprehensive opinion that would have let me consult with my homeowner’s insurance to say that I do had a liability with it -- for them to cover any damage to my neighbor’s ceiling. Now, there’s damage to it and we’re going through this again. My neighbor is elderly and she’s very frightened about having people in her house because of this health crisis that we’re going through. So, I wished that we had resolved it in January.

HMS opened ways for me to get another plumber to come out, but it’s the same company. I don’t have any options but to go and talk to another plumber because they are going to send me back to the same company. It’s very obvious that it’s mine. Because in January, my neighbor had a plumber come in and fixed her ceiling, and now, they would have to do it again. She's upset because it looks like they would have to open up her ceiling and it would’ve been more desirable to have it done in January.

Ideally, I would have gotten an accurate assessment of the problem. It may have happened some time ago, but still there was a reason why there was some leakage. And for me coming in as a new owner, I would’ve wanted them to assess it accurately and to fix it - to do whatever they could in my unit. And then, I would have been able to have her get my neighbor's plumber in and my homeowner’s insurance would’ve covered her damage and we could’ve just resolved it. I’m not happy with the situation at all.

I like everything about TotalProtect. When I had issues, all I paid was my deductible and they took care of everything. I call them when I have an issue and they put the claim in right away. When I asked the last guy that came out about my claim, he said that they already had all my information, that I've already been approved, and they just gotta order the part. And when the part came in, they came back out and installed everything. The work and stuff that they did would’ve cost me hundreds of dollars but TotalProtect was there to cover me.

Plus, all the techs that they send out are professional people, not handymen. When my AC went down, it was a professional person that came out from an AC company. When my refrigerator had a problem, they sent out professionals with a well-known name company and that was taken care of. And when I had an issue with my dryer, along with my washing machine, and they sent out a professional to take care of that. He also went up on top of the roof and cleaned out my vent where that lint goes at. And I got his card so I can call him back whenever I need something done again.

I've had four claims and three of them went really smoothly but with one, not so much. We've been with HMS since 2015, when we moved into our new house, so it’s been like five years now. It was the home warranty that the old homeowner paid for and we just stuck with the company ever since. Overall, it’s been a good experience. The claims process, for the most part, has always been quick and efficient, and I've had good luck with the actual technicians who have come to the house. I usually do it online and the website is pretty basic but it’s user-friendly enough to file a claim. That’s about all you can do on there. Then the quality of work done by the companies that HMS works with has been good.

If something breaks, a home warranty comes in handy. It also saved us a lot of money when we use it instead of going out and buying a new appliance. When the dishwasher had a problem, one person came out and told me that it needed something. He said that luckily I had the warranty plan thing with TotalProtect because if I didn't, it would've cost $500 to fix it. But then another person came out and looked at it. He said he didn't know why the first guy would tell me that and that it was a really easy fix. He said he could just order the parts then come back and fix it. So that was what he did and since the repair, the dishwasher's performance has been great. I've never been one to really use my dishwasher a lot but the reason why I made the claim was it was around the holidays and when I went to go use it, there was water everywhere.

We also had a claim for our refrigerator that died. It was exactly a week before my son's birthday party and I had to go out and buy one from Lowe's for $400. Then I had to go pick it up myself and wait until my husband got home to help me unload it. But everything worked out and a refrigerator would've cost us thousands of dollars if we didn't have the warranty.

I thank God that I have no complaints with TotalProtect ‘cause someone was telling me about them saying they're terrible, but they are courteous, nice, and they send somebody right away. They let you know right away that this is the name of the person who they will send. I would give them an A-plus. I’m already telling people to go with TotalProtect.

Dear Leonard- I appreciate your feedback and I’m sorry to hear that your claim experience was not what you expected. As with all warranties, coverage is detailed in the Agreement and there are specific terms within your policy. In this instance your warranty addressed the covered failing control board and temperature sensor. The Plastic Cover Plate on your unit is considered to be a structural component and is not eligible for coverage. Since your claim was partially denied, we have provided you a cash allowance in lieu of the covered portion of your claim. The cash allowance which was offered is based upon our cost to purchase the covered parts, not retail pricing. The service has been pretty good except for one little incident. One of the service people came out and did the work. Normally, I pay in cash. I gave my son some money to pay in cash and then the guy went back to the office and said, “He didn’t pay.” They sent me something in the mail saying we didn’t pay - that they didn’t get the money. But the guy didn’t give my son a receipt.

What Sears told us all the time was they had to have that $100 and they were supposed to give a receipt. They can’t do anything without me paying that money. We had to have my $100 deductible. We always had the money right then. That’s why I couldn’t understand why the guy didn’t have a receipt for it. The other person that came before who did my washing machine gave us a receipt. So, when I asked the guy myself why he didn’t give a receipt, he told my son he was going to mail it to him. I disputed. And then, whoever I was talking to, went on ahead and just threw it out because they cannot do anything until we paid that money. But other than that, I like that they find somebody real quick. You don't have to worry about trying to find this person and all this other crap.

The claim process is very, very easy. But I didn’t have very good experience with my last two claims. I had a plumbing problem, and I ended up paying the deductible and got nothing done. I ended up hiring another plumber to do the work. For my last claim, we had a dryer problem, and it took three trips to get it fixed. The contractor came in, looked at it and got the parts. They came back three weeks later and repaired it. But it died the same day they repaired it, and it took another two weeks to get back out here to repair it again. So I wasn’t happy with that.

There’s a wait period before you can get somebody in to get the issue looked at. So if they don’t repair it properly, then you end up waiting again and again, and the repair end up taking a month and a half. That’s too long. We were basically without a dryer for a month and a half. So that meant going to the laundromat. The window we had to wait was from noon to 6:00 in the evening. Four-hour windows are decent, but they might as well say all day if they’re gonna do it for that long.

TotalProtect's price was pretty much comparable with other companies, but it was simple to add my third unit for my house. It’s very difficult to reach someone on the phone or to ask to speak to a live person. The prompts to get to an actual person is very discouraging. I'm not that type of person that files claims electronically. I’d rather speak to an individual. And the way it’s set up, it is very hard to reach an actual person to talk to and ask a simple question. But once you do speak with someone and get the ball rolling, it’s pretty good. I’ve had good experiences with the contractors. I haven't had a problem with anyone that I've dealt with. I don’t have many claims but if I do, I have no problem with it. They work good. I just had my garage repaired. I was pleased with that. I'm satisfied with the security that TotalProtect brings. I will recommend it. I'm happy.

HMS has provided us with quality service because they allow me to request a certain vendor that they have. I’ve had them since 2004 and I’ve been quite pleased with the experience. I like that they give you a variety of options in terms of packages and things of that nature. They probably don’t want that out there, but I like being able to request who I want because if not, I’m gonna spend more money because I’ve had different fly-by-night people that they have and you have to keep calling back and getting different people. It’s easier if you know who’s good.

HMS is the devil we know. We’re used to them. These warranty companies are not that great and this one, I know how they operate. Submitting claims is usually okay. I will request certain vendors that I know are excellent and they allow me. I’ve only had a couple of times where they’ve given me flack over it. Another reason I keep them is because I know who their vendors are. And for heating and air issues or plumbing, there’s one particular vendor who is professional, on time, and they know our home. I’ve paid extra for additional services where when they do a claim for me, they may need to do something a little bit extra that the claim doesn’t cover, so I pay a little bit extra for that service as well. And I’m willing to do that. It's a kind of extra layer protection because our house is a little over 30 years old.

I don’t like some of the contractors though. I’ve had issues with some different plumbers and things. And in 2017, I had a really big issue. It ended up being a great thing that led me to a huge homeowner’s claim. It should’ve been covered, but the guy said, “No,” another person said, “Yes.” It was with Sears. I just ended up having to file a homeowner’s claim. I have a whole new updated kitchen. I had to purchase some things and do some things that I didn’t really want to. I had to put myself kind of in a hole, but it worked out. So if HMS didn’t allow me to request one of their vendors, then I would probably slip away after all the money I’ve spent over the years.

Back in 2009, it took a long time when our AC unit downstairs went out. They replaced that. And I was without AC from April 30th until the middle of June all because they kept going back-and-forth. It was like when you have a major catastrophe that’s covered in there, they do take a while to complete the claim. For large claims, it shouldn’t be such a long process. It was very clear-cut. And the vendor was excellent and knew how to work with the warranty company. It was the vendor that they partner with that really helped us the most with that.

When I bought a house years ago, I got TotalProtect. I've been protected for about seven years. Submitting a claim has been fine. Somebody always responds. And if I had any issues, they responded immediately. When my heat went out at Christmas, the contractor took a month to get the part and get the work done. We just had a guy come out and he was out here 12 hours after we called. So, the service depends on the person. I've already referred the company to some people. It’s worked for me.

But when I called about a toilet and a drip we have in the wall, I didn’t want the guy that HMS sent last time, so I asked for somebody else. They couldn’t find anyone so they told me took for somebody but it's a whole mess because I have to talk with the guy and tell him to call. It seems like it's very involved to do that. So, I'm disappointed. I haven’t even called and I haven’t looked for anybody. So, I still have the drip. I’m dissatisfied with HMS because I'm left in a pickle.

I read the little flyers my mortgage companies threw and when I looked into it, Total Protection had a higher rating than the company I had before. Sending in the claim is pretty much straightforward. I don't use online. I hate that. I call and speak to someone. I'm old school. I grew up in a town where I need to speak to somebody and I've never had a problem with them as of yet. I had one-on-one contact, listening to someone explain everything to me other than trying to read or understand something. The only one issue I had was when an electrician they send out was a little bit unorthodox. Other than that, the last few times I used them for my air conditioning, it was awesome.

I was giving information about reimbursement for damages made to my wall that they ended up denying. The contractor still collected my deductible after his lack of effort. I ended hiring my own plumber who found the issue and solved my problem in under an hour. HMS contractor lied and said it was pre-existing to avoid doing the work. This company must be under new management because this has got to be the absolute worst experience I received from them. Marathon services is a plumbing chop shop and a scam. I was assigned to them via my home warranty service (HMS), and they are terrible. Because they have to be the lowest bidder for a home warranty contract, their profit margin is low. They supplement this by tacking on ridiculous additional fees that have to be paid by the homeowner on top of the home warranty deductible. I had a water heater replaced in 2016 by a more reputable company with the home warranty company, and they didn't charge anything but the deductible. Marathon wanted an extra $320 to do the same thing to replace the water heater again this week. I will NEVER use Marathon for anything, and I cancelled my HMS Home Warranty to go with a different warranty provider. Told them to shove their replacement job and send me a check for a new water heater. I hired someone else to do it. AVOID MARATHON AND HMS HOME WARRANTY LIKE THE PLAGUE.

HMS was presented to me as an option during my home purchase this past August and with the rates and fees, that was something I was looking for to save me money. The first time, I filed a claim with my refrigerator that I had a hard time with. Someone came out to fix it but it was indeed requested for me to get a new one because the compressor would cost a little bit around the price of getting a new refrigerator. When the company submitted that information back to HMS, they indicated that they were gonna cut me the check for it. Months went by and I never received a check and never heard anything. I spoke to someone and they said it was denied for some reason but I complained about it ‘cause I was given misinformation and they were able to resolve my issue after my complaint.

Then I’ve had an issue with my garbage disposal and the toilet upstairs and the claim process went through smoothly with those two transactions. I also had an issue with my hot water heater one time and the guy came out. For some reason, it was working. It might have been like a circuit was tripped or something could have caused it. The guy didn't charge for the visit and he just kept it held just in case I had to call them back out there. Fortunately, I wasn’t penalized for that. So, everybody that HMS has been sending out to help me were pretty good, efficient and honest. After the first hiccup, I was upset with HMS, but they seemed to fix that issue and had been doing good on that part so far, so I’m satisfied at the moment.

The company contacted me and offered a repair credit in the amount of the repair, which I accepted.

    Original Review: March 5, 2020

The good: After our 15 yr old Kitchenaid fridge broke, we contacted HMS for our Weichert Protection Plan and were quickly given the name of an authorized repairman who was able to diagnose a broken compressor. He recommended requesting a service credit due to the age of the fridge and large cost of the repair. The bad: HMS didn't actually give us the choice of a credit vs. repair. This is despite the fact that the repairman noted in his report that we wanted a credit, and after we called HMS, told them we wanted a credit, and were told we would get called back about the request.

Instead, HMS went ahead and ordered the part without ever contacting us. The warranty contract says HMS can offer the option of a credit "at our discretion." But if they don't give the customer that option on a 15 yr old fridge that is bound to break again soon, I can't imagine they ever give this option. We called the service number and spoke with a representative who was rude and refused to put us through to a supervisor and instead transferred us to member services.

We paid our $100 deductible, we lost the value of the food in the refrigerator, and we are being told that the only option is to repair a 15 year old refrigerator at the end of its life. This experience makes me question how the home protection is worth it to renew, as we are stuck repairing our old appliances that will inevitably break again at additional cost to us.

There were little clauses in their brochure which is not put upfront and they denied everything but HMS has really followed through. In the course of almost 12 years, they’ve ended up replacing two of my heat pumps, both my furnaces, a dishwasher, repaired my microwave, and repaired my washer. The only part I don't like about them sometimes is it’s hard for them to find repair people and the amount of time it takes for them to approve the parts sometimes is quick, sometimes it’s not but other than those, I haven’t had any other issues.

But equally, I have some appliances that are now over 20 years old and may become defunct, in which case, they’re theoretically replaced under the warranty. And if they are not, there will be a legal fight. All the contractors have been excellent. Submitting a claim has been fairly good experience, except with my air conditioning system which has to be replaced. They replaced my outside unit which was okay, and then my inside unit has to be replaced. But because of local requirements, the inside unit had to be matched to the outside unit. So, for whatever reasons, they put in a new outside unit which was not covered by the warranty. I did not enjoy that.

I had gone online and I was looking for several companies and out of the three companies I was looking at, TotalProtect felt better for me. I had a claim where the gentleman came out and did the refrigerator and dryer. And reading the policies and the procedures, I know within six months if something else goes wrong, it's not another deductible. Luckily, I thought to call the company before paying it again because he was adamant and said, "No, this is different." I said, "No. It's the same dryer. What are you talking about?" Luckily, the representative at the company was very attentive. He called the gentleman while I was on the phone. He tried to do a three-way connect but the company hung up. When he came to fix it, it was no issues. I felt like the company was trying to get over.

I was very appreciative that TotalProtect was like, "No, this isn't how it's gonna go." I had another claim for a gas fireplace. It looked as if the gas line was not on in the basement which was weird because everything else was working. So, we did a claim. The tech came out, cut it on but then said because there was an old note, he had to cut it back off. He originally stated that he was not gonna charge me because he had to cut it off, but then, he did.

When I went to call back to the company, they were like, "Well, I'm sorry that he didn't leave it on but that's still a visit." I called TotalProtect, but they said it was nothing that they could do. So, I was a little upset about that one because that was like $125 for nothing. I could have told them that it worked. TotalProtect could've done something for me to get my 125 back.

The first week was easy ‘cause it was 38 high for that entire week so we had no problem leaving stuff in the cooler outside or the table outside. The second week was a little more of a challenge ‘cause the high got in the 50s during the day. Then for the toilet issue, it was miscommunication, and that was one of the reasons why that took so long as well. Other than that, it was perfectly fine. I felt pretty good ‘cause with the toilet issue, they gave us additional information for the future and things to look towards just in case. Then the guy who serviced the refrigerator said that if it goes out again, we should give him a call and he’d take care of it at no charge. Keep up the good work HMS.

We had HMS since we bought this house which was about seven or eight years ago and the Realtor recommended it. In the first year or two, it came in handy. We had a downstairs AC unit replaced. The last time I had a claim with the downstairs heating unit, it went fine. The guy came out and did some work on it. Before he left, he thought it was fixed. I called him and told him that it wasn’t. He figured it out and had me do a couple of things, like shut off the thermostat and shut it down, then start it back up and reset it. He did a really good job.

The previous claim was a disaster and that was the downstairs air conditioning system. I made the call to HMS and never heard from anybody for two days. They were supposed to let me know who to call or somebody was gonna call me. I waited a couple of days. I finally made contact with HMS again and they said that the people were supposed to call me but gave me the number to call them. I called the company and the guy said that they don’t do work with HMS anymore. It was a hot summertime and all time was wasted by finding that out.

When another guy finally came out, he was very ragtag. He looked at the system and said that he was gonna have to order a part and then he left. Apparently, within a couple hours, he talked to HMS about the problem and they told him a way that he could potentially fix it. He came back and said that he had an idea and so he fixed it and it lasted about 15 minutes. They were from Hot Springs Village which is about a 45-minute drive and they did a great job although it was five or six days after I made the call. It seems to be like it’s a whole lot of luck of the draw as to who gets recommended. If we have an issue, I would like to be given an opportunity to recommend at least maybe two or three local names of contractors to come out and fix it instead of just being dealt with one.

Do not, I repeat do NOT purchase a home warranty with this company. We have had multiple claims that took a minimum of one month to resolve. The first was our refrigerator in 2014. While they ordered parts, we were without a refrigerator for a month. Second one was more recent. Air conditioner went out in 2018 then again in 2019. Of course in the hottest part of the summer. Both took over a month and the situation was never resolved. Got a new compressor, but it didn’t solve the probable.

We finally had to buy a new one out of our own pocket. Now, we have been dealing with a cooktop that needed new starters. The technician first came out Dec 8, 2019. It is now March 1 and we still do not have a working cooktop. I have called almost daily, it has been escalated. The technician doesn’t believe the parts exist and the cooktop needs replaced, but HMS’s tactic is to delay and delay until you finally get fed up and replace it yourself. Save yourself some money, time, and headache and don’t purchase a warranty with them!!!

They seemed to know the issue right away and even though I've called them on one particular thing, they’ve taken a quick look and have been able to tell me if they think anything else is wrong. They’ve also left everything picked up and cleaned up when they've finished the job.

One of the burners on our stove was not working one time. I submitted a claim to HMS Home Warranty the contractor they sent was okay. It was determined that something needed to be cleaned up. Now, it works well. We also had a couple of other claims such as one for the faucet in our kitchen. That time, it was not flowing like it normally should. We called HMS and they had a plumber come out. That worked out well too. We're glad that we have HMS. If something breaks, it'd be covered under our warranty. It's a $100 deductible instead of paying 500 or 600.

When I purchased the house, the seller included HMS Home Warranty. Then I renewed it. My claims experience with them has been fairly good. However, they don't have contractors already lined up where I live. This last time, they gave me two different numbers and both of them were from Pittsburgh. I'm about an hour from Pittsburgh so the contractors turned the claim down. Eventually, HMS let me contact somebody local. I did and they called in like they were supposed to. I then paid them in full. HMS said that the reimbursement would take two to four weeks. I thought that it'd take at least four weeks, but I was surprised. I got it in two weeks so I was really happy. Moreover, I was reimbursed for the full amount except for the $125 deductible and the $25 disposal fee for the water tank and I understand that. Sometimes it takes a day or two until we find something, which is a little slow. But otherwise, I'm happy with HMS.

When I made a claim for my microwave, it took a couple of days for the first tech to come out. He was really great and I really liked him. I've been with HMS for three and a half years. I got it with my home when I bought my home. I call to submit claims and it is easy. I can’t do it online because they don’t have providers in the area, so I can’t use the whole online tool. The contractors usually come out that day or the next day. Sometimes, it can take 24 to 48 hours to be in contact with one, and it depends on when they can get down here. The contractors have been awesome but finding them can be complicated. I had a stove that didn’t work but they got a contractor out to look at it, and when they couldn’t get the parts because they weren’t made, the decision to give me a new one was really quick. Every issue I’ve had, they’ve gotten fixed.

TotalProtect's claim process is fabulous and easy. I did a claim and the guy that came out was a little on the iffy side, but he did what he was supposed to do. I also had another claim that I cancelled because we discovered that my daughter had put too many clothes in the washer, and when it went to spin out, it got wrapped around the shaft in the middle and that stopped it. So, my wife called me the next morning and told me she did a small load of whites and everything went fine. Then she did a load of colors, and it went fine.

I have had repeated delays to the repair of my furnace, leaving me without heat, and I receive conflicting information daily. On 16FEB2020 I placed a service claim to fix my natural gas furnace. The next day, 17FEB2020, my service technician came to assess the issue. It did not take long for him to identify an issue with the blower motor. He filed a report the same day with the warranty company, and I verified that they had received the request for parts from the technician. I was told they would be ordered and take 3-5 business days. On 25FEB2020, no parts had arrived. This is the 6th business day after his report, 5 business days if I assume they got to it 'the next day'.

When I called, the person I talked to said it looked like the parts had been ordered the previous week, and he would have to escalate this to the research department. I wanted to know a timeline as I am without heat, and my house contains an infant (11 months old) and a pregnant wife. I was told a manager would contact with me within 24 hours and I should keep my phone close by. No manager ever called me. I called again 26FEB2020, and spoke to a customer service rep. I was told that parts had been ordered the previous day (25FEB2020), and would take 3-5 business days to arrive. I told her that I was told *last week* that parts were ordered, given the same spiel, and that I would like some sort of confirmation. She could not provide one, but said she could have a manager call me back. No manager has called me, and it is in excess of 24 hours.

I spoke with my technician a short moment ago, who told me they received notice the parts came in, went to pick them up and they were the *WRONG PARTS*. They were not the parts the service company had identified. So now I'm assuming parts will need to be re-ordered and I will have to wait ANOTHER 3-5 business days. All of this while I am without heat, and the next three days are High: 42 Low:22, without accounting for wind chill. I sent an email at 0811EST on 2/26 to Cinch Customer Service, and I only received an automated email reply at 1029EST on 2/27. The company has repeatedly been deceptive about the status of my repair, and mislead me about the status. This is my 12th day without heat. I am starting to wonder if their tactic is to delay me to the point where I am unable to stand the dropping temperatures, and pay out of pocket to fix this issue.

After his last visit yesterday, he called me and stated that he would contact HMS to see if the dishwasher can be replaced. I told him that I don't think the dishwasher can be salvaged at all but HMS refused to replace the dishwasher. I find their refusal to replace my dishwasher to be dishonest in fulfilling their contractual obligations. I can't see the previous things that I've filed for. I called customer service after sending my claim again online and the reps were able to see that I already had a previous claim and that my subsequent claim was a duplicate. We bought HMS home warranty for our new home purchase. Our 1st claim was an electric ignite fireplace that would not start - denied as out of scope. More frustrating, the refrigerator water line stopped due to an insulation breakdown that caused sweating on the back panel, then rust and freezing that stopped the water flow. Claim submitted, claim denied - why? No coverage for issues due to rust. We appealed the claim with support from the technician who came to look at the issue. Claim again denied - this time they claimed they only cover “mechanical damage due to normal wear and tear”. We expressed that this was the issue and that insulation failure was a mechanical failure. HMS stated that “mechanical failures are where there are wires coming out”. We tried to clarify that ire’s are electrical which should also be covered. In any case HMS was dug in and not going to cover this claim, despite no legitimate reason to deny the claim. Our opinion is that HMS is a sham outfit that will fabricate any reason to deny a legitimate claim. Find another home warranty provider - avoid HMS a all cost.

Working with the service providers of HMS is a hit or miss but today was a good day. We got somebody right away that’s coming tomorrow. I called this morning to get a claim on my oven and they referred me to Rapid Repair Home Appliance. One of my previous claims was for the dishwasher. The contractor they provided us with wanted to bust up my floor but I can't do that so I had to go pay somebody outside of HMS to do it. If another company could do it, then the HMS contractor should have been able to do it too. That’s the only thing I don't like. I wasn’t satisfied.

I also had a claim for my washing machine. They had to come out like three or four times. I know they wanted to make sure that it couldn’t be repaired before they replaced it. With my oven, because this house is about 35 years old, I’m just interested to see what they're gonna say ‘cause I’ve been pricing it. It’s an oven and a microwave together on the wall. I’ve been looking at the prices, and I just wanna know when they come out ‘cause my oven is not working properly.

I’ve had a water heater replaced, I’ve had a garage door replaced, the washing machine, and the dishwasher. All of that went through. Actually, the garage door’s starting to act up now. But until it breaks, I’m not gonna call. HMS is priced a little high, but other than that, we’re gonna keep it. It’s definitely worth it. Most of the time I call when I file claims. And when I call, they're always friendly. I have and would recommend them. I couldn’t live without it because I have saved a lot of money by having HMS.

I’ve had TotalProtect for such a long time and I’ve recommended them to many of my family members. I had someone over here from TK Mechanical yesterday to install a water softener that broke down and his name was Frank. He installed it but he never tested it. So, when I went downstairs to program it and have it work, it sprang water all over the place. So, I called TK Mechanical to tell them that I need them over here quickly. I can't use my water softener because it's flooding my basement.

The rep from TK Mechanical told me that prior to his leaving, he would check the system to make sure it works properly. But Frank didn’t do that, nor did he turn the water on. I was wondering why there was no water in the house and it turned out that he never turned the main back on when he left. He might’ve been having a bad day because the people at TK Mechanical said that Frank is very reliable. But he lost that reputation with me.

Other than that, TotalProtect's service has been good and usually, the technicians that are sent are reliable. Getting a resolution for my claims has also been pretty rapid. But this time, it took six weeks to get a resolution. TK Mechanical kept saying that they couldn’t get the part but you can go to any place to get a water softener. So, I went online and found very similar water softeners. You can go to Home Depot, Lowe’s, or any other plumbing place to pick up something like that. I certainly wouldn’t recommend TK Mechanical for any work based on my one experience. They may be wonderful people but my experience has been bad with them.

Also, I would like to see a list of places in my area that works with TotalProtect. I live in Central Jersey and usually, they’d send somebody from South Jersey, which is 50 miles away. It’s kinda silly to wait for somebody to drive two hours to get here when I can get somebody to drive 30 minutes who lives in a town close to me and does the same type of work. So, each time I’ve made arrangements with TotalProtect, they give me a vendor and I ask them where the vendor is. Then I tell them where I live and what the surrounding towns are, and to give me somebody from those towns. And it usually works out okay. Still, it would be helpful if their customers had a list of the people that they deal with. That list changes rapidly but they could send emails out every other month or twice a year letting people know what people they have working for them, and what type of work they do, as well as their locations.

The only thing that I have noticed is that, when we were in our old house in Manassas that we sold, we've had half a dozen different folks over the years to come and try to fix the issue on our heat pump upstairs. I don't like HMS Home Warranty. I canceled but then I just renewed to have peace of mind, but they're horrible. They say they're gonna send somebody but they don't. And when they come, half of their vendors don't cover the products. For example, they found a way not to pay for our microwave. And there were also a couple of other things that they did not repair.

I've been a customer with HMS for five years and the first year was great. But after a year, something drastically changed with their whole process and the way they dealt with the vendors. If something does break down, they don't make it easy. When your microwave is broken, they give you the name and number of somebody who would handle the microwave. is supposed to reach out to you. They should be trying to reach out to you, but they make you reach out to the vendor. You call and you call, but these various vendors never call you back and they never reach out to you. Before you know it, a week or two passed. You can't be a week or two without using your microwave.

Then, once they come and figure out what the problem is, they have to order the parts, which also adds another week to the time frame. Then the vendor has to come out according to their availability. The whole thing is not a good system and that's not how it used to be. I'm very dissatisfied with HMS. There's nothing good about them. It's bogus and a waste of money.

Horrible Horrible Horrible experience. I had to pay deductible twice (though I was told by them they will refund me one payment), wait 9 months 11 service providers/companies to say the microwave cannot be fixed. Then HMS offered me to replace by $2100 microwave with a $700 one. I have a built Microwave and they offered me a countertop, that they will somehow install between my cabinets.

Their Customer reps are rude and are never consistent. One rep (not putting his name) told me, "all managers are sitting in a conference room, I can see them all from my seat", when I asked if I could talk to one. When I called back within a minute and asked the first telephone operator I need a manager she transferred me to a manager. None of the service providers they send were reliable, some of them just decided not to pick up phone calls. HMS still insisted that I get service reports from providers who were not picking up my or calls from HMS. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!

On the first year, my HMS home warranty plan was paid by the seller so it came free. On the second year, I renewed and the payments were low, so I continued. On the third year, I continued and my fridge broke down. It took 3 weeks for a resolution. Then something happened to the stove and that also took some time for resolution but it happened. I’m in my fourth year right now with HMS and my other appliances, like my AC and furnace, are included. I also own a couple of rental properties and it’s important to have some sort of a warranty plan in place so that if something breaks down, my tenant can call them and have somebody come.

The home warranty is like a protection plan and I’m continuing to sign up with the hope that this year I can ask them for price reduction and they’ll be able to accommodate. My monthly plan cost increased by a lot last year and I’m paying $50 a month now. I can get a similar one from my local appliance repair program from my electricity provider, and $33 a month is what they charge. From that perspective, the cost is extremely high but I continued and didn’t fuss about it. Also, if I’m working with DTE or Consumers Energy, or my local electricity and gas provider, and with their warranty plan for the appliances, then they are quick with the resolution. With HMS, it works but it’s a painful process. My tenant is very calm so she cooperates. Otherwise, if I had a difficult tenant, then I would be in a problem.

The major issue is the customer care typically acts like someone is sitting in Jamaica or somewhere, and answering the phone. It’s really hard to talk to a live person and I have to go through a lot of options. If I have to file a basic claim or a repair, and I have done that before, it was easy. But if the appliance is deemed for replacement, then to identify the next step and to talk to live agents is extremely impossible. There are also issues including the language/accent barrier where it’s hard to listen to them and to explain what’s going on. Then the line disconnects and I have to go through all of that. It takes about 40 minutes to reach to a person who can really help out with all of that. I wish it was more streamlined. Everything looks good on paper until the point where one needs to talk to an actual person and that’s bad.

Also, I had an issue with a refrigerator last year, and they said that the fridge was bad and there’s no other way but to have it replaced. For them, it was a three-week process because the repair company told me that they have to follow a process where they have to go back, do something, come back again in four days, do something, then come back again in a week, and check it again. In the end, they said that, “Okay, it will be replaced.” It was for a rental property for me and my tenant was without a functional refrigerator in the middle of the summer for 3 weeks. So, things like that are extremely painful. I’m paying for 600 a year and I would expect something better. Because it’s a warranty that if something happens, then they should go on that quick and be able to come up with a resolution quickly, but I did not see that happen.

I like that TotalProtect covers major appliances like the heating and air conditioner. That’s where I’ve gotten the most benefit. They do what they say they are gonna do, but it's not much that they're gonna do. I've had the warranty for 15 plus years and it's working out pretty fairly. But I paid for more than I’ve gotten out of there. Most of the things I call for are not covered anymore. I got an oven fixed but some of the major things that you expect to be under that contract are not up under there.

I had an air condition unit that was replaced. But I did not know that to have the follow-up service, I have to pay additional for the disposal of the different properties. I paid after the fact. It was okay although I really considered something else. But I’ve had TotalProtect for years. When an air conditioner unit hits you and they say it's 700 more, I included the policy to include that so the next time, it might not be that. For the air conditioning system, it was done well twice. But anything else I call for is just not their fix-it.

That is something I would like to see improved. You gotta have water insurance. When you call about the plumbing, it’s nothing that’s covered that ever broke. If you call about the electrical, it’s nothing that they can fix that’s under the contract. So, why do you have the warranty? It's great for the air conditioner but how often does your air conditioner tear up? That is unless you got junk to start with. In my case, it was 15 years before the air conditioner even had problems. It really would be better if the things that are actually tearing up are included in the features that we are paying for in the warranty. Also, TotalProtect's contractors are mediocre.

We’ve had the house for 2 years now and when we bought it, the sellers had the HMS home warranty with it. We renewed the warranty after the first year. The biggest and ugliest claim was with my range. It started on May 8th and I finally got things straightened out in December. It was partly due to the fact that there were 7 times that Sears came and they ordered parts but they ordered the wrong parts to come and fix the stove. Then once it got to 7 times, I told them, "Look—," and they finally said, “It’s not gonna be fixable.” So, we went through the process of getting a stove and it had been okay.

I also called on the furnace 2 or 3 times, and the guy is always gonna submit a suggestion to do this or that, and I’ve never gotten any feedback saying, “Hey, the repairman says that we need to replace this or that, you know. He indicates that it could and it's getting older," which it is. It’s a 19-year-old furnace. But then for the dryer, the contractor came out and took care of that within 2 visits. They came here, ordered parts, came back, and fixed it.

Another thing is that their phone tree is way all over the world. I call through and a few times I get all the recordings. I’ve never got crazy with anybody, but I always thought that maybe it could go the next level after. I said, “How many times are they gonna come and check the stove and order parts before we say, ‘Hey, enough is enough.’?” Still, I’m satisfied with them so far and I may renew it again when it comes due here in a month or two.

The home had HMS warranty for a year when we purchased it and then it was up to us to continue on. There were a few things in our home that are a little up in the year and they were gonna make it through another year or so. We decided that it would be within our benefit to continue on last year and everything worked out well. Then we renewed again and we had a dryer issue. So, that definitely saved us a couple hundred dollars there with getting a simple part fixed.

My only issue with HMS was when I was trying to put a claim for the dryer. It wouldn't process through on whatever device I was on. I kept getting an error message when I was trying to do it on my phone so I tried to switch and I had to go and do it on my laptop, which was fine since everything worked well. Also, I only worked with the gentleman for the dryer but everything was very efficient. He was very courteous, very on top of things with communication and with getting everything done that he needed to do. He was definitely very flexible as I have six-month-old twins at home. I wasn't able to walk around with him but I showed downstairs, and he asked me a question at one point then did what he needed to do.

Our house was probably about six or seven years old when I first moved in. I just thought a warranty would be good to have, because if something goes wrong, they would take care of it. And so far, they have. TotalProtect's price per month was the lowest out of the ones that I found. My experience has been fairly well overall. We’ve had numerous things done. They have taken care of everything that we have ever had a problem with. However, the interior of our microwave peeled off and they wouldn’t replace that. They said that it wasn’t mechanical part, which I disagreed with. That coating is an actual part. It has a part number. But I understood the microwave is 15 years old and everything. I was a little upset about that, but after I thought about it, I said, “Well, they’ve taken care of everything else, so I really can’t complain all that much.”

I also had an issue with some of their subcontractors that they hire out to do the work. For instance, one HVAC company was very mad that we were using the home warranty company and not using his service. He made comments like, “They’re hiring people to come out to fix your stuff, and then they hire me secondary to come out and fix it because the first people screwed up. Meanwhile, I got people at home not working.” He was very irate and we’ve dealt with him twice now. And both times, he gave me an attitude. I’ve told TotalProtect, “From now on, please don’t send them back here.” They took care of it.

The only other issue that I’ve ever had is the time it takes them to get certain parts in. Some things they would have right on their truck, other things, you have to wait a couple of days for them to come in, because TotalProtect has to order it and send it to them. There was one time we had a air conditioning problem and we were on a cruise. My mother and father-in-law were here, and it was 90 degrees out so it was 80 degrees in the house, and it took them four days to get the part in to fix it. That was a little bit of a hassle. But overall, for the $125 deductible, it’s well worth it to wait.

Techs were here four months ago and replaced the hot water heater. The guy AHS used was phenomenal. He was a great guy. He was in and out. Within two days, he had the thing done and it was good to go. We even got a $500 deductible when our roof got a leak. We had a contractor replace the roof, but TotalProtect paid the deductible, so that was nice.

The company I had was shutting down, so I was looking for another company. Everything that TotalProtect had to offer in comparison seemed like the better option to me. Submitting a claim is very simple. I typically submit my claims online. Within an hour, I’ll have an email with the information, the claim number, and a contract person’s information. They schedule the service, they come out, I pay my fee, and they take care of it. With the exception of one, the contractors have all been great. I had one that was really scammy. He didn’t do the repair properly. And when I started having issues, I contacted TotalProtect, and they quickly sent someone out and got it fixed. But other than that, I’ve always had great experiences.

My mother and my brother both have TotalProtect now because I told them to get it. I’ve used two other companies prior, and of the three, TotalProtect is number one. Their monthly fee for their service is reasonable. The trade call fee is reasonable. Some people might say it’s a little higher in comparison, but you don’t have all the extra out-of-pocket things with TotalProtect. When TotalProtect says they have you covered, they have you covered.

Everything has been working good with HMS Home Warranty. They answer our calls. Of all the things we’ve had done, two things were weird. One was the stove, where we told the repair people who were coming out exactly what was wrong. The door on the stove was hanging off and the handle was disconnected, and the door separated. When they got there and evaluated everything, they needed to replace two burners. Apparently, they don’t do doors. If they don’t do doors, why did they answer the call then? It was a waste of $100 for us. They never should have come out. And then, we had the furnace, the HVAC system upstairs replaced because it had problems. They put the drip pan under the HVAC. It was too short so it didn’t catch the drips right. And it came through a fixture in the ceiling. So, that company was questionable. The one I loved was a guy named Antoine. He did a phenomenal work.

I like that HMS do what they say they're gonna do. Their claims process is easy however, when the annual fee went up, we were not notified. I just noticed it in the charges and that took me by surprise and upset me a bit. We bought a house in South Carolina and moved here about a year and a half ago. It came with a home warranty and when it ran out, we got one with HMS because we like them. They were better than the people we had when we bought this house. So far, we’ve been only disappointed once. We’ve used HMS quite a few times because we also had a house in Lynchburg, Virginia that we put under HMS, and used them for a couple of things that happened there. It has always been a satisfying experience. I like what they stand for, their efficiency, and for the most part, I like the companies that they send out. They know their stuff. This is our third house with HMS Home Warranty and we’re very, very happy.

    Original Review: Feb. 14, 2020

I purchased a Sears Whole Home Warranty in October of 2019. My Heat Pump decided it no longer wanted to function in December. So I call Sears Home Warranty which is underwritten by Cross Country Home Services. I get a claim put in. They send a tech out, they put more freon in. Call it a day. Fast Forward to a week ago, unit shuts off again. Call Sears Home Warranty. Technician says he thinks its the TXV doesn't do a leak test or go into the attic to check out the indoor unit at all. He didn't give me an estimate of how much it would cost in writing, only that it would be about $500-$800 that isn't covered. So I go and I contact two independent companies at my own cost, to see what they think. Well they come over do leak tests and both determine it is the Indoor Coil and not the TXV.

I tried to contact the sears technician, I sent him texts and left voicemails to try to understand the discrepancy. I got no response. I called up Sears Home Warranty to see if they will get a second opinion, they say they need 48 hours. I then call back, and the guy says ok. So then he refers me to BELTWAY AIR COMFORT SERVICE INC. So I go and do some research on the company. The company had a Contractor A license that was REVOKED by DPOR in 2018, because the company was involved in some sort of license cheating scandal according to the DPOR complaint. That is NOT the type of service company I want coming into my home.

I am instead going to use another company on my own dime to repair my broken unit. The Sears Technician is incompetent, and the new company they want to send to my home had their license revoked. This is not the experience I expected with Sears Home Warranty/ Cross Country Home Services. I think Cross Country Home Services should reimburse me for the cost of my repair, given that their technicians are incompetent or have had their licenses revoked. They should also be refunding me the 2nd claim deductible since the same problem occurred within 180 days for the same thing.

I also have experience with another company and they would find every reason in the world not to honor the warranty. But with HMS it’s pretty cut-and-dried. This year, my heat pump went out and they replaced the outside unit. However, I don’t like that you deal with a machine an awful lot. They’re more cut-rate and it’s hard for them to find people that are local. They've had to get people to come out from North Carolina to do some electrical repairs for us. But the people they've sent out seemed to be very knowledgeable. I’m coming up for renewal and I’m going to do again for another year.

When we used HMS, everything seemed to go fairly smoothly. Submitting the claim was fairly simple online. We had a problem with our heat pump, and it quit working in the dead of winter. It took them maybe two days of the week to get it fixed. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the parts that day, but they immediately came back the next day. They were very good.

I've been with Cross Country for at least 10 years. Historically, their service is great. They're responsive. The vendors that they've dispatched to our home are effective and efficient in resolving matters. But I had an experience with them over the course of the last three weeks that was not positive. I responded to a survey back today regarding that very negative experience.

Evidently, the vendors that they would normally contract with no longer have a contract in my area. My claim was outsourced to a different warranty company that did have a contract with a vendor in the area. I wasn’t working directly with them but I was going through them then they were having to outreach to the other vendor to follow up for me or find out where we were in the process. I requested that they escalate it because it had to do with our refrigerator freezer in our home and it took three weeks to get the refrigerator running. We went three weeks without a major appliance in our home. I'm not very pleased.

Also, I did all the follow-up like me contacting the vendor or me contacting the warranty company. The second time that I contacted them, I requested that it be escalated and was told that it was. The fourth time that I contacted them, I was told that it had never been escalated. By that time, the vendor had already contacted me that the parts were in. I wanted to schedule the appointment for a repair but the vendor wouldn't schedule it until they had the parts.

When the parts came in, I had to find their next available appointment which was a full three weeks from the first time that they came out to inspect the appliance. That was odd to me because we've had things repaired. We've even had a refrigerator repaired before although not this particular one in question. The vendor came out the same day, inspected it, and fixed it the same day. But for this particular claim, the gentleman from the vendor came out on a Friday, inspected it, and said they were gonna have to order parts. I needed to unplug the refrigerator and let it completely thaw. He told me that unfortunately, it was a Friday. By the time he could get back to the office, it could be Saturday or Monday before they could enter my paperwork. In reality, it was actually the following Tuesday that the paperwork got entered and that's when I tried to start speeding things up with no luck.

What I'm used to with Cross Country is they dispatch somebody out, they address the issue, and they resolve the issue the same day. Very rarely have I had a situation where there was an issue like after the first year when we had an issue with the plumbing. They dispatched somebody out who ended up making the problem worse. They told me that they couldn't resolve the problem and that I would either need to contact the warranty company or their office. The tech left and I called their office back. They said they couldn't get somebody else out there to fix what needed to be fixed. It was after Christmas and I would have to wait five more days to get somebody out.

I called the warranty company back and they dispatched a new vendor within probably 24 hours and had the issue resolved within 15 minutes. They handled that one well because they were willing to dispatch a different vendor out. But with my refrigerator claim, it's a little bit different. My guess is the last time we had a refrigerator worked on under this warranty company, they used a Sears repair technician but Sears is no longer in our area. They closed. My guess is if there are still some Sears repair places within the country, their contracts are probably is still active. But in our area, with Sears pulling out, I'm sure that was part of the problem.

When I called in and asked for them to escalate the issue, it should have been escalated. They should have not told me that it was gonna be escalated. A note on the account to contact the customer for a follow-up to let me know that it had been escalated or where things were in the process would have been appreciated. The vendor was upset that I was calling them for follow-up because they weren't the friendliest.

The work was good but it was kind of a continual "Why do you keep calling me?" sort of thing. They would tell me they were waiting on the warranty company. When I would call the warranty company, they would tell me they were waiting on the vendor. I'm certain this is because they outsourced the request. Overall, the warranty coverage is good. As with anything with time, the out of pocket has gone up but it's still $100. And if you think about having to replace parts or have work done, you're still saving quite a bit of money with only paying $100.

I’ve been satisfied with TotalProtect's service and so I've had them for 20 years now. Other than last winter, my furnace went out this past fall and it took them about a month to fix it. Every time they turn around, they had to order a part and I had sit around in the cold for a whole month. That’s the only complaint I ever had. But one thing I don’t like about them is getting an okay to fix something. The idea of having somebody come out here 2 or 3 different times and the guy had a part in his car but he said he couldn’t use it as he still had to get an okay. And that took two weeks. Still, I’m satisfied with the customer service. Something happened to my oven and they took care of that right away.

Their monthly payment is cheaper and they cover more things than American Home Shield. The dishwasher hummed all the time and wouldn't go through the cycles and wash the dishes. It filled up with water and agitated it a little bit, but it would never pump out the water. It just got stuck in that one cycle. I turned the power off in the breaker box for that appliance and tried to get it fixed. The guy changed the hose, took the plate off and ran through the electronics. I thought it was working and it looked like it was gonna do fine, but it did it again. It got to a certain cycle and just stopped. The technician who came out was very kind, informative, and thorough. It was a very pleasant experience. I'm satisfied.

And then when I do the claim online, it kept kicking me out and telling me to call. When I call, it’s kinda hard to understand the reps. They just give me a number for the contractor and tell me to call them. The contractors have been very good though. They show up when they do. They return the phone calls. The website is relatively easy to use. They also give us some kind of idea when to expect the contractor or we usually heard quickly. We've been happy with the quality of the work performed by the contractors. A few times, we had to wait longer than ideal based on when they could get out or when they could get parts. That was frustrating. We've used Sears for a few things and they have been super frustrating to work with. I also get frustrated that I can't always find everything that's covered really quickly when renewing, which you need to reference when renewing. Overall, HMS is a good value.

The first technician TotalProtect sent out for our refrigerator messed it up. We ended up having to get a new one. The warranty company replaced it though, which was good. Also, one of the original technicians they sent out for my dryer was awful. I have a very weird brand of dryer. It was evident they had no clue how to work on it and messed it up worse. One time, TotalProtect tried to send one of them back out a second time. I remembered their name and said to send me someone else. And they did, so that worked out okay. Other than that, we’ve had good luck with the water heater people, the garbage disposal people, and the washer and dryer people.

We were a little disappointed when the deductible went up. When we started, it was only a $75 deductible and now, it’s $100. We’ve used them for several things and it was great. But recently, we found out that some things that we thought were covered were not. We recently had an issue with our sump pump, but it was not covered. To me, that seemed to be an appliance, but they don’t consider it that way. It’s been years since we've started with TotalProtect and they’ve really come in handy. We’ve been happy with TotalProtect. For some reason, they no longer can be on my mortgage, which was another kind of a bummer. We’re paying that bill separately now, but we plan on keeping it.

The most recent claim was for the water heater. It took some challenges to get it done, but we did. Several plumbers came out and the last plumber that came wanted to charge us $900 on top of getting the water heater replaced. I opted not to do that. I requested a buyout. So, I got the heater replaced myself and they did the cash-out. I wished that the trades that they sent out would be a little more responsive. It took a few plumbers to get out here in order to get this thing resolved. The same thing with my oven. That was an ongoing thing, but finally we did a cash-out with that, too. But the bottom line is we got the job done. We are satisfied with TotalProtect.

HMS Home Warranty came with my house and I had it for my safety net. I had a couple questions when I first started. To get to someone that was actually helpful on the phone was pretty difficult. They sent me to a foreign country and I gotta beat around the bush for about a half an hour, and then they sent me back to the States. Once I got there, the woman that I got on the phone was super informative, and she told me I could upgrade my plan for a small fee. I actually ended up doing it ‘cause she explained it. I didn’t think she was trying to sell me. They were extremely helpful and they cleared everything up for me.

Submitting a claim was super easy. I was having an issue with my furnace, and within minutes, they scheduled someone to come out later that week. It was a really good service. HMS Home Warranty came with the home and then I saw the benefits. I've been with them for two years now. When submitting a claim, it takes pretty long and the people that come aren’t knowledgeable. The one guy who came out when I initially had a toilet issue lied about a flood in the house. He said it was gonna cost a couple thousands of dollars and it ended up being a $5 fix for the pipe on the back of the toilet, and there was no flood damage. When I called initially, I think one of my first calls was about my dishwasher backing up. The guy came out and took my deductible -- a hundred and something dollars. He told me to pour apple cider vinegar in there and it should help out. He didn’t do any work. It just so happen that I had a personnel with the house that was able to fix the toilet.

Most recently, the dude that came out for my fridge, I had to wait for a week and a half, to get my fridge fixed. I had to throw out all my food. He came back with a light bulb and said that he thought that it was the light that was broken. Then he finally said that it was a part that he had to order and then he told me he couldn’t order the part, that the warranty had to order because they order so many that they get it cheaper. I told him to just fix and that I kept taking off from work for him to come and taking his phone call. It was taking way more. I had to call him and asked if he was coming yet, when he was gonna be here or if the part came. It was a barrier to something that I had to have 'cause at the end of the day, it was cheaper, but it has been horrible.

HMS is definitely good to have especially if something goes wrong. But each time I’ve had something go wrong, the people that are coming out are strictly trying to get the deductible. As far as their knowledge of what’s actually going on and me paying for stuff, they’re either trying to rip it off. HMS might even wanna look into this.

When I submit a claim to HMS, I do it on the phone. I tried and worked it online once but that wasn't working. So it's just easier for me to call. But I don't have any trouble when I set it up. My recent claim was for my washer which was not working correctly. It would finish cycles and it smelled a little warm, like electricity-wise. They contacted Sears to do this. I submitted on a Friday and they came on that day. It turned out that the timer was not working and that's what was replaced. It seems to be working better now. Sears was nice enough to give me what their price would've been, 'cause I don't think anybody else is done. It would've been about a $300 house visit with the parts. And so, it cost me $100, so that was good. My house is about 25 years old, and that's when things begin to break down, so the warranty has been useful for me.

On the phone, the service was awesome. The service people coming into my home were polite. Within 24 hours, everything was resolved. The very worst thing was that it took me three weeks to get my refrigerator. I had to be without a refrigerator for three weeks. But otherwise, I could do nothing but gush about how wonderful everything went. Submitting a claim was very easy. Everything about HMS was just what the Realtor told me it would be. Everybody could tweak, but all in all, I would be one of those old people in the commercial saying, "And they came in fast." They were the best.

I got in touch with the service provider and he got back in touch with me in a very timely manner. Then, he showed up when he said he was gonna show up. He had ordered the parts and they came in quickly, and he fixed it expeditiously. It all worked out very well. While I'd like it to be cheaper, the service has been okay every time I've called a provider that they have selected.

With HMS, I had to submit a claim for my furnace three times. The first time a guy came out, I gave him a $100 deposit. He said he fixed it but he didn't. The second time a guy came out but still the claim took the third trip around. The last contractor HMS sent out for my furnace were great. I had to wait on a part to come in. Once that came in, the techs picked it up and installed it. They did it in one day. My water heater stopped working too. The tech checked everything out and fixed that. Everything has been working since then.

In most cases, the process when submitting a claim was very easy and fast. There was one time where the vendor came and did the work but it wasn't good. When we called them again, they would not come back. I told HMS and then it was going in circles for a while. They kept on contacting that guy but he never came. Then, I had to pay another $100 out of my pocket for someone else to fix the plumbing issue. I would recommend that when somebody doesn't come back to fix what they fixed incorrectly the first time, HMS should drop them from their list as a vendor. Other than that, I didn't have any issues and overall, I’m happy with HMS. I bought my second house. It's a rental property and I have it insured with them.

When I purchased my home, it was suggested that we go ahead and get the home warranty just because it would be a good idea. So, we got it and we paid the extra $100 as well to get the updated package which saved us. We weren’t in this home for three months and the heat exchanger on the propane heater had rust holes all in it and the evaporator cooler on the AC side had holes in that. When I submitted a claim, everything went along very smoothly. Once all the information from the service provider was given to them, they processed it and took care of it good. I'm very happy and satisfied with the service. The contractors were very respectful and they did a good job. We live in Virginia, so I've had to use the heat and the AC and since they came out, everything is working fine. My experience with HMS has been very good and people should get it. It’s worth it.

The technician from JGF MECHANICAL SERVICES - MD, 240-586-1415, came out and saw that the washer was apparently working because one cycle started. The technician didn't use the available diagnostic mode on the washer to display diagnostic information. After I returned home I was able to troubleshoot our washer today, after a few minutes searching the web, I found how to enter diagnostic mode on our washer and immediately found Error Code E2 F3 indicating the inlet water temperature was incorrect.

After manually operating the washer I was able to turn on cold water in maintenance mode, but the hot water did not turn on. This indicates a problem with the water input valve ($90) or the Control Electronics ($366). I'll perform additional troubleshooting to determine which part it is. The technician should have been better trained on the maintenance modes available for Whirlpool equipment. I feel that my $100 deductible was wasted and I should be refunded the deductible because the technician was unable to accurately troubleshoot the problem with our washing machine.

The only person I had that can come out couldn't until 9:00 AM. I said that I had no working toilets and TotalProtect just kept calling and calling. Then they called back the 9:00 AM guy, who then called one of his guys.

The guy came out on New Year’s Day at 2 o’clock in the morning. We gave him a really great tip. It was fantastic. I couldn’t ask for a better company than TotalProtect. I've been with them since 2006 and feel they have been a little better than when I was in New Jersey. When I used them before, it was more for heating issues. TotalProtect's claim process is super easy. However, if I call customer service about an issue, I get a different person each time I reach out to somebody and I have to do the whole spiel as to why I'm calling all over again. They should have a certain person to reach out to or if I reach out to somebody, I should be able to directly contact that person again about the same issue. But for the most part, everybody has been very nice and helpful when I have called. I've had TotalProtect for about eight years and had an issue one time, but it got resolved eventually. One of their contacts did not show. But they finally got me in contact with a company. I was very happy with that company though. They came out in time, were very professional, and got me taken care of right away.

Calling in my claim was great and the customer service was great too. A-1, the last company they sent out, did a good job. But the one they sent out the first time sucked. That guy, when he came out, he did not want to do the job. One of my drains is in the front of the house and he did not want to snake that. He did not want to snake my toilet again when he came back. I was like, "I think the problem would be solved if you guys either pull the toilet up." He had to do that, but he didn't. And then, he came back a second time. I asked him if he could snake the toilet again, but he wouldn't. They were lazy. I then told HMS that I never wanted them to come back and asked if they could send me somebody out.

Also, when somebody is going to have to pay extra money, it needs to be made clear that that is what we are going to have to do. The people that I talk to in the customer service tells me I do not have to pay any money. But then when the company comes out, they tell me that I have to. I then tell them that I already paid 100$ deductible and that I was told that I don't have to spend another dime. It's like certain people are trying to get money out of you.

The experience with TotalProtect went pretty good this time. It wound up there was a broken wire on the furnace and the thermostat was bad. The contractor was okay. It was him and his son that came. The one thing he did do right off the bat was he inspected the furnace to make sure it was even safe to be operated before he did anything. I appreciate that because that way, you know that the furnace is in good operating order. He's not gonna do anything with it. Then he fixed the broken wire, but he stopped at that point, and I had to call back in two days to have him to come back out. He came back out, and this time he kindly let me talk to him a little bit as far as what I thought. He got looking at it and agreed with me then that that was probably the problem. He repaired it and it's worked fine ever since.

I wish there was somebody around closer to my area to do the work because these people are travelling quite a distance to come. Consequently, I might have to wait a little longer than some people to get service. The last two times prior to this, I was very unhappy. In fact, I was about ready to quit and go with somebody else. They couldn't get anybody to come out here, and they wanted me to do the calling and hire a contractor to come out here. Then they wanted me to have the contractor to abide by their rules or regulations. I didn't feel that that was my job as a customer.

    History:
Opened claim for leaking water heater
Total Protect assigned a plumber to the claim
they diagnosed the issue, and estimated the cost which included $425 that was not covered by the warranty

Service was performed - service techs did a great job on the install and the revised plumbing.

    Issue:
they had to move the washing machine to install the new water heater, expansion tank and plumbing. When they put back the washing machine they did not put the drain line back into the pipe - which I did not notice.
later that evening I put a load of wash in the washing machine and went to bed. I was awakened by a call from my security company that a water alarm was going off in my house. i found the bathroom and entryway flooded with at least 1/4" of water everywhere - it was actually beginning to soak into the carpet in my office. The washing machine had drained onto the floor.
It took a couple of hours to clean up that mess including pulling out the washer and dryer. water seeped under the moulding so now I am going to have to pull the moulding off to ensure that I don't have any mold issues. Also, there is a vinyl tile floor in the bathroom and there were places where water got under the tiles.
I paid out of pocket $550 ($125 deductible/$425 for new code reqt - expansion tank + piping mods). While this was an honest mistake by the plumber - it caused a lot of work for me.
TOTAL PROTECTS REMEDY FOR MY INCONVENIENCE AND EXTRA WORK - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! They reminded me that the deductible was in my contract and the non-covered costs were billed directly from the plumber.

This is how they treat a customer that has been with them for more than 15 years! I will be cancelling my service contract and I will relay this story to everyone in my network. Perhaps their "customer service" managers should re-read what it takes to retain a customer versus obtaining a new one.

The people that we purchased the house from had paid HMS Home Warranty for one year. The warranty expired after a year and I repurchased it again. And I've now had service for over a year. On January 1st, the furnace went out. We were in the middle of one of our patented polar vortexes in Wisconsin and we had no heat. It was a very frustrating situation because we were extremely cold. With the wind chill, we were in the negative 30s at that point, and I have kids. Luckily, we had a fireplace. But we didn't realize that they had no HVAC providers in our area at all to come and work on it. The only numbers they had were people that were over two hours away, and those people laughed at me on the phone and said they were not doing it.

I did some research and I found a guy in our local area who would be willing to accept third party payments. It took me almost two weeks, but we finally got everything resolved and I now have a furnace. It was basically working hand-in-hand with a supervisor after everything fell apart multiple times. But once everything got done, I was very happy with how everything went. Our dishwasher also went out not long ago and HMS Home Warranty had somebody out on it, had it up and repaired it within a week and a half. If they're willing to sell a warranty for an area, they need to make sure that they have plenty of service providers in that particular area. To spend however much in a year, and then find out that there are no service providers in the area, that's bogus.

I’ve had HMS for a couple of years now and Titan Heating & Air, the first HVAC system company that they sent out, was terrible. They did some shady things to my HVAC system. There was supposed to be two capacitors and when my system wasn’t working, they ran everything to one. So, whenever one part of the system would cut on, they would cut on the other part. My utility bills were $600 a month and I didn’t know why for a year, Eventually, somebody from Sears came out and looked at it. They told me that they couldn’t touch it because somebody else did the work wrong and they didn’t wanna be liable.

HMS made Titan come back out and undo what they did but then, they wouldn’t fix the leak in my refrigerant which was upsetting because every six months they would recharge the refrigerant. HMS sent somebody else out and they looked at it and told me that the system has been messed up for a while. I ended up having to get it replaced. That was a random $1,500 I wasn’t planning on paying because it was replaced. But I’d rather get it addressed than have to keep calling somebody out every six months for the same issue. HMS reimbursed me for my deductible. They were good to work with so, there are no complaints on my end.

We thought our heater broke. The contractor came out and said it was the thermostat. That worked for a few weeks. Within a week of that happening, our dishwasher broke. Our dishwasher a two-door one and kind of hard to find, but it got taken care of no problem. Then the heater started not working again. As it turned out, it was a heat vent so the contractor came back out and fixed it again. The second tech was much more thorough than the first. And because we’d already made the initial claim, they didn't charge us the $100 to come back out for the second one. HMS has paid off and I couldn't be happier with my experience.

Some people must have complained because the service is back at being good again. We were happy with the last time we did a claim. We had 3 guys come over to fix our washing machine. The 1st guy was young so he was really inexperienced. He ordered 2 parts but one part wasn’t necessary. The next guy wasn’t that experienced either. We asked for an experienced guy and when the final parts came, the 3rd guy was great. He was probably in his 50s and knew exactly what to do. He found the problem right away and put in the parts. He was probably done within less than two hours. The washing machine is now working perfectly. I even did three loads yesterday. Thank goodness ‘cause I didn’t have my machine for about 10 days.

We paid for three years of coverage upfront to lock in a lower annual rate, $200 deductible. Eight days ago our heat stopped working, as of now we are renovating so not staying there. It took three phone calls over five hours to have them authorize a local tech to come and assess the problem. The tech was given authorization to purchase the part. Of course, before the tech even looked at the heat pump, a $200 check had to be written. As of now, no one knows where the part is, the local tech will not return phone calls but the $200 check was cashed. No painters or other contractors will work until the heat is repaired. So the longer we are without heat, the longer the stop in renovations and the longer we pay a mortgage on a place we cannot even live in.

I asked if this was not considered an emergency, and I was told no. And if pipes burst due to low temps, I was also told they are not responsible. Not only will I never recommend this company, but I will go out of my way to tell people not even to consider a home warranty with them. I wish we could use our HVAC person, but since he is not on their authorized list he cannot do any of the work. Bottom line, we are out $1250 for three years of coverage, $200 deductible check that has been cashed and 8 days without heat. And they say this is not an emergency. Next call is to the PA Attorney General to lodge a complaint.

TotalProtect is okay. It used to be that you could call and get a representative, but now they have it online. Now, I tried online and some of the representatives that they got service were not very good. If you go out and look at them, they got bad reviews. So, I'm having to check now every time I get somebody before they come as to if I want them coming or not. This time I called for my heater and they sent someone out before the Christmas holidays. The little guy came in, looked at it, and said nothing was wrong even though something was wrong. So, this month I called again, and I did not want that guy coming back. They gave us someone else and that guy was wonderful. He came in and he immediately knew what was wrong. He got the part and fixed the heater.

As soon as I called everybody there took care of what they were supposed to take care of. But, our problem is still not fixed. Our lights are still flickering but they’re not going out and staying out. The tech they sent is still waiting for the electric company to come out and hang some kind of box on the outside which would tell when the fluctuations occurred and where they are occurring. They haven't shown up with that yet though. I've called twice to remind them. Still, Total Protect's service has been fine. Most of the contractors they've sent have been respectable people who come on time and clean up after themselves. For the most part, I'm very happy with all of them. Also, pretty much everything I've called about, HMS has covered. They're also timely about getting someone within the next day or two. The only item that I had an issue with was my stovetop. It was sparking and I had called the fire department. They disconnected it and took it out of the house. It was a big expense, but HMS said they won't cover it because it was removed. The process of putting a claim worked well too. The new company is a little bit different though, and I haven't had too much exposure. But the calling before the change was real top-end, quick and easy. The company is depending on me going online to do this. But I cannot look at both of my contracts online at one time. I have to log in two different log-ins to look at two different contracts. And it's easier always for me to talk to someone rather than type. And so, you're being forced to go online to do what I'm doing. It hits me the wrong way sometimes. I don't like it when companies do that. I would prefer an option.

The TotalProtect technicians I've had have been excellent. But I'm a little bit uneasy with those working with air conditioning in Alabama. I had a problem this summer with the AC which was leaking water. It was a stopped up pipe. The young man sent to us insinuated that TotalProtect wouldn't cover it and that they'd want pictures. I've never had that problem before so that concerned me. Also, Birmingham is a big city and the air conditioning people that provide service are from Tuscaloosa which is about an hour away. In the end, I went ahead and had my AC fixed separately. But for all the years that I had been a customer and for the $125, it certainly should've been covered. Then in January, I had a claim for my disposal that died and the contactor put me in a new one. They also unstopped drains for us and replaced my dryer several years ago.

I've been with TotalProtect for a long time when their copay was $75 and now, it's 125. I wish they'd put a stop on that though because I'm old and I live on a fixed income. That gives me a pause before I call and I wanna make sure that my claim is covered. The monthly charge has gone up too but I can deal with that better than I can with $125 copay. Still, I'm satisfied with TotalProtect.

Then I read that TotalProtect does and that they cover any other type of service whenever something breaks down, so I went with them. I have them for a while and submitting a claim now is very easy because I do it online. Then I get the immediate response from the email and I contact the service provider.

The one that I've had lately, Georgia Appliance Pros, has been great. I've been using them because it seemed like when one thing broke down, everything started breaking down. I just call one day and they're usually out within the next couple of days. They're friendly, quick to respond, and I haven't had any problems with them. And with TotalProtect, my experience has been exceptional and they have taken care of the needs with my appliances. I even told a couple of people about them and their service, and they are looking into also acquiring one of those plans.

I will be with HMS for 22 years this March and as a woman who lives alone, I feel comfortable having these people come into my house who I don’t know because I know that HMS has researched them and they’re keeping track of them. You can do your claims online with them but it’s easier to call. I recently had a claim for the faucet. It won’t turn on and it took HMS a day and a half to send someone out but it wasn’t their fault.

The contractor said that he would call me when he gets the report from HMS and then, the next day, he called and told me that he couldn’t do it that day because he was booked. The guy asked if I could wait. When he came, he told me that the claim wasn’t covered and he couldn’t fix it. So, I had to pay him the deductible which I didn’t have to because it was a recall. He was the same guy who came out to fix the same problem in December. I called HMS and I complained and they’re gonna help me out. So, I am content with the resolution of that issue although it was a bit frustrating. But normally, I don’t have an issue with anyone that HMS has sent out.

When the first reps from DMV Heating & Cooling came out here, they did the job but they didn’t install things correctly. It was causing my unit and my gas furnace to have more issues. I had a neighbor of mine come by in November and he mentioned that my pressure switch was bad but when DMV came out, they did not switch the pressure switch and it should’ve been switched back then in November. We had no heat for two months. We had to wait for a part that had to be ordered and it took close to a month. My four-year-old was the first one to get sick and then the rest of us started getting sick and it was because we didn’t have any heat in our two-level home. The portable heaters were not doing enough because it was just cold and this was in November and December time frame where the temperatures dropped really low.

DMV reassigned the claim because the tech was on vacation and they didn’t wanna come out here, so they wouldn’t pick up the phone. It took them two days to call me back. DMV is a big company but they are bad with communication. When I got Residential Systems, they were courteous and Mark was amazing. HMS should continue to do business with them. The technician that came out diagnosed the problem, figured out what it was, troubleshoot it, found the root cause and fixed it. Everything else was good with this recent claim and HMS really followed through. Rodemy, the supervisor, was amazing. I'm supposed to get a call back from her this morning because she missed me on Friday. So, I'm still waiting for her call. I had to pay Residential Systems $492 because of the work that DMV did improperly but I'm thrilled because I didn’t have to pay a deductible the second time.

This time around, there was constant communication and I received multiple call backs. The only thing that I dislike is that when you call in to HMS if you’re trying to do a claim over the phone, it gives you the runaround before you get to a representative. You have to speak into the virtual machine and it starts asking you all these questions. But then I realized I could do it online. Sometimes though, I like to explain so that it falls under the proper category. The drop down menus were what I was having trouble with and then I found out that my furnace is a gas furnace and not electric but it does give you the option now in the drop down menu.

I’ve had HMS here since 2015 and I have a townhouse in Virginia Beach, and I was curious as to why they canceled the policy at that townhouse. I used to have American Home Shield and then I switched over to HMS but they said that I would not be able to continue with the policy. I just got a letter with a random explanation. I ended up getting a new fridge and a new microwave because of it malfunctioning at my rental property and I have no coverage there. If HMS could investigate that, that would be nice. I was paying 51.99 for the rental property and I'm paying 46.99 for the property here, which is our primary residence. But I don’t have any coverage at the townhouse in Virginia Beach which I would love to have. If not, then everything else will have to go through my property manager and it’ll end up being a little bit more.

I’m Hispanic and we don’t believe in insurance at all. I never had insurance. One of my co-workers told me, “Why don’t you get one of those home-protect-plan things because they cover a lot of things.” And then, I was like, let me try it out, just in case. I looked it up on the internet, and I saw TotalProtect, and that was it. And then, sure enough, a couple of months later, my heater went out. They came and they fixed it, and ever since then, I was like, I’m just gonna keep it and it also covers a lot of things. To me, if something happens, I just call, they come and they fix it. It’s also good craftsmanship. The work is really good work. And then, if it acts up a week later, they’ll come and the work’s guaranteed. I know I don’t have to pay out of pocket. I like that.

The only thing I don’t like is the contractors. One time, I had a claim for my AC and it was in the summer, and the guy told me he was booked for the next three weeks. I got mad because I have a plan and I’m paying for the plan. So, they should come and service it ASAP. And then, I went through four contractors that I called back. I was like, “You’re telling me three weeks? I need this now.” But then their rep was nice and she helped me out. She found me a contractor that was gonna be in within a week. But it’s summertime, everyone’s AC is going out.

The two were easy, while we had little issues with the other one -- it took longer to get paid for the item, but they paid eventually. The personality of the claim reps was very professional, and the technicians did the job well. This warranty company, however, didn’t have the maintenance thing where someone will come out and take care of something or check it yearly, like in the summer and during the winter just before the season starts.

Filed a claim today due to refrigerator going out. They sent me an email and text, gave me a claim number and told me to call 1st Millennium Home Services LLP (888) 511-6155. This number is not in service. So not only do I not have a working refrigerator, I don't have a repair company to contact for my claim. No number to contact HMS directly, I have serious doubts anything will be done. I tried looking up 1st Millennium Home Services, cannot find it, only a healthcare company. Sounds like a scam to me. I doubt I could even get a refund for all the money I've paid to HMS, I could buy a brand new fridge no problem with all the money I've paid to them over 3+ years. Not happy at all.

Finally got to use our plan for our microwave that went out in November. I was never called to set up an appointment, I had to call and get an appointment. We have renters in our home. The repair man came and was told to our renters that the part would not come until 3 months later. I informed the company and was givenan option of $275 or replacing te microwave. We opted for the $275. We have yet seen a check from Total Protect Hone Warranty. I called 3 times and was told check was sent out. The first check I was told had a stop payment and that a second check would be issued. I did not recieve the second check. I was also told that the company changed it's name. Third call I made I requested to speak with a supervisor and was told I wasn't able too and was directed to accounting. I left a message and have not yet had a return call. Money was pulled out of our pockets to purchase a new microwave. I'm so tired of yge run around that I'm getting and will be talking with someone from Better Business Bureau.

We made a claim on the warranty after noticing water hammering in our pipes when running the washing machine. The warranty company sent a plumber from five hours away, who showed up with little to no equipment. He listened to the water hammering occurring, looked at the water shock absorbers behind the machine, and looked for the access in the wall and then looked at the main pipes in the garage outside. He advised warrant company to have a washing machine technician come out and look at the washing machine intake valve, which led to a delay and additional deductible fee. The washing machine was normal, the washing machine technician measured the house his water pressure is over 100 psi. We personally then dug over 3 inches of dirt off of the house’s water supply pipe leaving the water main in the yard by the street. There, we noted that there was no pressure regulator as there should be. And therefore we suspected the problem was actually due to high water pressure coming off of the water main to the entire house. We contacted the warranty company, noted that the original plumber was not particularly interested in addressing the problem nor brought the equipment to conduct a thorough evaluation (such as a water pressure gauge) or conducted a thorough evaluation on the day he came. He did not measure the pressure nor did it appear that he looked for the missing regulator in the yard. Therefore we requested a new plumber. Initially we were told by the company that they would find someone else. No one contacted us and we contacted the warranty company a week later. At that time they told us no there was no details in the notes about looking for another plumber and we had to stick with the original contractor for the job. We are now at an impasse, the job is not been completed, we are still told by the warranty company that we have to stick with this seem inept plumber. No new plumber has been assigned and the company is not considering assigning someone else to the job. We have asked for a refund on our policy since they will not provide a competent worker and they have refused. They also told us there would be a cancellation fee for the services.

I've had HMS Home Warranty for many years. I took it first ‘cause I had a really old house, and they came through for that. And then I moved to a condo and they’re here if I need them. And it’s nice to have, even though the price is going up. When I submit claims, I do it over the phone. I've gotten really good customer service. The people that were sent to look at my washing machine were wonderful. I think they were new in the area. They fixed it but it wasn’t really fixed, so they came back a couple of times. And now, it’s perfect. Also, they didn’t charge me more. They just said it was their fault. I would recommend them highly.

Those guys for the heater were on the ball. They were here the next day to fix my heater and they were so nice. They’ve been here before, I think. So, Totalprotect needs to hang on to them. But this other guy that they sent me at first to fix my washing machine was a shyster. Then they got Sears out which they came according to schedule and then TotalProtect opted for me to get a new washer, which was fine. Everything went well after the shyster was taken care of, and I was able to stop going to the washeteria. After I complained about the shyster guy, TotalProtect got on the ball then. So, right now, I’m content with TotalProtect. It’s better than it was when I had my garbage disposal that took six months to fix. With my garbage disposal, these people came out, looked at it and never came back. But eventually, it was taken care of. What they need to do is make sure that whoever they send out are reputable.

I got HMS when I bought the house and it’s been almost 5 years. I’ve only had to use them maybe 4 or 5 times but I wouldn’t go to anybody else. I get calls from the electric company or Ohio Edison or Columbia Gas and they’re always wanting me to do this but I said, “No. I have a home mortgage and they take care of everything.” I have never had any problems with anything.

I call and the claim is submitted ASAP. HMS would give us a name of the vendor that is coming to repair something and that vendor normally calls within 12 hours and tells us the date that they’re coming. If a part needs to be ordered, they elaborate when that part will be in. They’d call us again and tell us that they’re on their way. It’s been absolutely wonderful. For instance, the last vendor we got was Bay Area Heating, Cooling & Refrigeration and they called us within an hour after I actually called and submitted the claim. So, it's great because normally I can call a company to come out and they take forever to even return my call or to make an appointment. But these guys are absolutely wonderful and I would tell anybody to go through HMS.

It has been one thing after another with our home warranty. We have received no benefit from purchasing the warranty. Service providers don’t show up or answer phone calls. I can’t talk to anyone important enough at HMS to fix the issues I’m having. Customer service representatives do the same thing I do with no success. We have not had hot water in almost a month. We can’t flush our toilets when it rains. Did I mention I’m 7 months pregnant??? HMS has not helped a single bit in resolving the issues we’ve had under our warranty. It has been a complete waste of money.

Why have a warranty when the service providers offered by the warranty company are the worst in the state. I don’t understand?!?! And if someone from HMS (OTHER THAN A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE) would contact me, I would love to get this resolved before they are liable for preterm labor medical expenses from the lack of warranty coverage provided under our “policy”. This is terrible.

I would give no stars if that was an option because HMS is terrible. HMS was the warranty company provided when we purchased the home; the compressor in our heat unit died and we placed a claim. We paid the astronomical co-pay and the claim was covered. We have now been almost 2 weeks with no heat because HMS has not released the PO to the HVAC company to get the parts needed. HMS gives us a different story each time we call, and we call everyday. They are a scam company who prey on homeowners with promises of assistance that are empty. I will never renew with HMS and I will preach it to the masses to not purchase an HMS home warranty.

When I submit claims with TotalProtect, I do it either on the phone or online. For me, it's easy. But there are some issues with the way the system is logging things. When my husband did it, he called and messed up. He said dish machine but it logged in as the laundry. When he called the people to fix it, originally it was for a heating element. They came but then the next week, it crapped out so they charged us for the dish machine issue, which charged it twice. When we got in touch with TotalProtect, we were told that since my husband logged the wrong problem, they didn't determine it was the same issue. It wasn't the tech's fault though 'cause they wouldn't know unless they get the symptoms.

But I was really happy with the first set of people who answers the phone. I called them three times and we were passing information. All of those three times, I got a person even though it was 4:55 in the afternoon, so I was shocked. They were also on time and they came when they said they were gonna be. Also, when I was looking for a warranty provider, I compared some prices and picked TotalProtect 'cause the other companies didn't cover dual HVACs, which I have.

The heating and air conditioning and the electrical contractors from HMS that I've used are great. But some of the appliance-specific contractors are not so great. It might have to do with the size of the companies that are part of their vendor list. They're small mom-and-pops companies servicing appliances and they're stretched a little too thin. Their knowledge levels are not so hot but it's adequate. The last claim I had was for a refrigerator. The contractors were grumpy and they didn't like to do repeat service calls. But when it was done, the fridge was running and performing properly. Still, the value of the warranty is good although there have been some issues in the past. It's a good investment and my needs are eventually taken care of every time I've used it.

Our realtor looked up HMS and for the benefits that it had, it was the best one that he found. The claims process is relatively simple. The first time we called in, I spoke to one of the customer service agents and told her what the problem was. She filed the claim and the contractor came out. They did the job in a relatively short period of time. The only thing was that we had to wait a couple of days when we were waiting for parts. We had a hot water heater that broke so they came in and they replaced it. They put in all the accessories that went with it and it went really well. We also had our freezer that went out, but it wasn’t covered. HMS has different plans and you can add a freezer in their plan, but we didn’t have that initially so the freezer wasn’t covered.

Since HMS is the one sending the contractors out, I'm at their mercy. But if it doesn't work, I can call them back and tell them that I need someone else. So far, some contractors that they've sent out were good, depending on the trade, and some were worthless. The better trade that I've had come out was the plumbing, which I was satisfied with. And the worst trade was the stove repair.
