I am disappointed in the end result of my move. A very sentimental piece of furniture was damaged in the move and no one seemed to care. I had specifically pointed out the piece and put a sign on it to be handled with care. Which, unfortunately, did not happen. After numerous emails back and forth an agreed upon amount of reimbursement was established. That payment never came. This company is quite difficult to communicate with. Which would make me hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

We hired Bold Moving and Storage, a Richmond Virginia Company, to move our larger items from Dumfries to Williamsburg, Virginia. The process included moving out and moving in of our larger items, about 70 self-packed boxes, and storage for two weeks. Although the price seemed reasonable, following are our experiences.

    1) Delivery after closing was a moving target. It was delayed three days due to a “truck breakdown” that the delivery folks knew nothing about. 2) Items of ours were lost. Two items belonging to others were delivered to us, one damaged, one not damaged. Bold Moving made no effort after numerous emails to pick up the items between September 9 and our last effort on October 21. 3) Nine items were damaged including two antiques, brass lamps and exercise equipment. The claim process is 60c/Lb. Compensation is cents on the dollar, so little cost to Bold for damage or lost valuable items. Make sure one understands the claim policy on expensive light weight items before committing a deposit payment. Overall, I would never recommend Bold Moving and Storage.

RUN!!!! Raining? No problem. We'll load up your stuff, wrap it in a wet blanket and let mold and mildew grow the entire trip. Need a little more time? No problem, we'll store it for free for 30 days and then reload all the heavy boxes on top so they literally tumble off the truck (see pictures). Nice floors and walls? No problem. We'll get those scratched up nice and good for you. Turn in a claim? No problem. We'll tell you we'll process it within 30 days (but we won't) then we'll significantly undervalue the damage and offer you next to nothing. Damage done to your home? Not covered. PLEASE!!!! Summary of Issues
      1. Initial Contact & Quoting
      • Quoted $4,000 by rep “Joe” with almost no questions asked.
      • Received disturbing and unprofessional calls from Joe, including one where he seemed barely conscious.
      • Follow-up email from him begged me to help him “keep his job.”
      2. Revised Quote & Communication
      • When escalated, the owner brushed it off as “medical issues.”
      • New rep “Bill” increased my quote to $7,500, without apology for the previous behavior.
      3. Pickup Problems
      • Movers asked me where to park a semi in Brooklyn, threatening “long haul” fees if they had to park far.
      • Boxes packed with no organization, many items thrown together (e.g., shoes crushed under piles of clothes, mirrors stacked together with no padding).
      • Insurance was never explained — I later learned I was placed on the lowest “per pound” coverage by default.
      • Crew solicited tips in front of each other.
      4. Delivery Problems
      • Promised delivery date of August 1st turned out to be only a “window” — actual delivery was delayed.
      • Movers demanded an additional $700 transfer fee because they couldn’t bring the semi into the city.
      • Payment accepted only through Cash App / Venmo to an individual name, not the company.
      • Paid service for “unpacking and reassembly” was not honored — boxes were just dropped off.
      5. Damages
      • High-end leather shoes crushed and deformed.
      • Kitchen equipment (oven water tank) shattered.
      • Several mirrors and frames broken into glass dust.
      • Most boxes arrived filthy and damaged.

      Professionalism & Conduct
      • Management was dismissive, defensive, and at times outright hostile.
      • During a call, “Bill” said: “Respectively, you have no idea what you’re talking about,” and “your little $7,000 move would be $10K plus anywhere else.”

Conclusion: This was one of the most stressful, unprofessional experiences I have had with any service provider. From the initial contact to the final delivery, Bold Moving and Storage demonstrated incompetence, hidden fees, and alarming unprofessional behavior.

Recommendation: Strongly advise consumers to avoid this company.

I recently used Bold Moving and Storage to move from a 3rd floor walk up Condo in SW Florida to storage for over two months. They then moved me from storage to a home in Anderson SC. The moving team did a remarkable job at both ends of the move despite the challenge of moving all of my possessions down three flights of stairs in FL and then moving my possessions up a very steep driveway in SC. Not only did they wrap everything with great care, but they delivered everything without any damage.

Out of the fifty-two boxes and furniture only one baking dish was broken due to the way I packed it inside of another dish. I highly recommend BMS for your local, long-distance or storage needs. Not only did their estimate blow away their competition, there were no additional charges over the original estimate. Bill ** was honest from day one and a pleasure to do business with.

Now, I just have to wait for the furniture to get delivered to our new place. Hopefully the delivery team will be as great as this packing team was.

      Reviewed Feb. 11, 2025

This is going to be a bit different of a review - because I am going to detail all parts of my experience with Bold Moving, which started great and has ended in the most insulting and worst customer service experience I have ever experienced. Unlike some of the other reviews, which Bold has contested by making sharply worded claims and disputed facts, I will only comment on factual occurrences, which we have photographic and video evidence (posted with this review).

The review will be long, but if you are considering moving your family’s valuable belongings with this company, I strongly urge you to take a few minutes to read it – especially the section regarding their negligent packing of our most valuable and fragile items, and how they ultimately decided the amount that they should rectify the situation with compensation us for these damages.

In Bold Moving’s own “mission statement” they claim to be “built on the following customer promises:”

      1. Bold will provide superior Customer Service throughout the moving experience
      2. Bold will be transparent about price from beginning to end
      3. Items will be returned in the condition in which they were picked up
      4. Deliveries will run as quickly and smoothly as possible

      5. Integrity takes precedence over profit

      In our experience with Bold:

      1. Our customer service rep Tom provided excellent customer service for the pre-move period he was pursuing our business in October 2024. However, from the moment things started going very wrong on delivery day (Nov 5, 2024), Tom began repeatedly denying things that were clearly true, fabricating multiple things that are not remotely factual, insensitive and lacking empathy during a very traumatic experience, and failing to take any reasonable level of responsibility for the negligence of their packing crew.

      2. Bold was indeed transparent about the price they would charge. However, Tom has continued to make false claims that we had extra items that we had not previously disclosed that were moved (this is 100% untrue and he has refused to provide any evidence on multiple occasions when prompted).

      3. A significant number of very valuable and important items were, as documented herein, delivered to us either seriously damaged or completely destroyed, not in the “condition in which they were picked up.”

      4. Both the pickup day (14 hours) and the delivery day (9+ hours) were marathon days filled with problems, far from smooth or quick.

      5. Tom, on behalf of Bold Moving, has demonstrated zero willingness to acknowledge their wrongdoing, has questioned and disputed every provable and documented claim I have made, and has refused to take any responsibility on behalf of Bold beyond their normal claims process which I will detail below. Despite claiming they put integrity above profit, they have put retaining virtually every dollar they’ve collected from us despite all obvious indications that their packers were grossly negligent, over anything remotely considering integrity.

      PAGE 2
Two things should be mentioned immediately:

      1) I did elect the base insurance coverage that they offered of $.60/pound weight per item that is damaged. I do not dispute this. I made this decision based on Tom’s presale representation of their careful and “professional” packing process and the great efforts he went through to assure us of our item’s safety. I had the opportunity to elect a higher level of insurance, and I declined in large part due to those assurances from him, I made the decision that any damages were likely to be accidental or unpreventable, and not due to grossly negligent packing procedures by their employees.

      2) I have read multiple negative reviews of Bold Moving and have noticed a trend of the company responding with argumentative statements, making claims to counter the contents of these reviews. I am sure they will do the same here but remember that I have photographic and video evidence and saved communications. In fact, let me address some of their “common arguments” proactively, before they even make them. And keep in mind, I have all of the emails (and am happy to post them if they would like me to) documenting our conversations and videos/photos to prove my statements.

      a. “We picked up your items on the exact day you requested, drove them 900 miles and dropped them off on the exact day you requested without charging you an extra fee.” I originally requested pickup in the days leading up to our closing date of 11/1/24. On 10/14/24 I asked Tom if he would move the pickup date to anytime between 10/26-29 instead, and he agreed. My preference was 10/26 but I was open to any of the 4 days.

They informed me on 10/22 that they would be coming on 10/26. I told them we would not be in Florida until November 3 and asked if that was the day they were coming or if it would be after that. I didn’t ask for 11/3 or for a rush, I told him that’s the earliest we would be down there. So, picking up on 10/26 and dropping off on 11/5 was them accommodating a range of pickup dates and dropping off 10 days later. We were pleased with the dates, but it’s silly to act like that, or actually driving the items where they were supposed to go was something “above and beyond” the normal service that we paid them over $6,000 for.

      b. “We packed and transported additional items that you did not include on your items list and did so without charging additional fees.” This is one that is truly hard to believe that they keep telling me this. Before they gave me a final quote for the move, I provided them with probably the most detailed items list possible (see the two photos attached to this review) listing every single item that we wanted them to move, including measurements of the items where possible. It was an exhaustive list of our entire home and Tom acknowledged receipt and indicated that their estimate was based on those items. There is not ONE SINGLE ITEM that we asked them to move that was not on our original list.

Tom has claimed 30 or more “additional items” and refers me to look at the inventory list that they provided me. Well, feel free to take a look at the inventory list (I’ve uploaded 2 pictures of it) showing 88 items – except most of the items are not listed there (the majority of the entry are the different boxes they used). So, it is just a complete lie that we included additional items in the move – we did not and it's pretty clear that he has no basis for claiming this and no ability or desire to prove it.

      PAGE 3

      c. “We offered you a $400 discount on the full pack service.” This is untrue. Initially they indicated they would be charging us $1.25 per cubic foot (cf) for a full pack of our 918 cf move ($1147.50). We told him that we had packed ourselves about 30-50% of the volume of the move ourselves (nonfragile items like books, old clothes, children’s items for storage, etc.), which we in fact did.

I asked if he would charge us the full pack rate only on the cf they actually packed, and instead he gave us a 16% discount (to $1.05/cf, or $963.90) for the entire 918 cf to reflect the fact that we had already packed many items, because “many times items packed by the customer have to be repacked.” Not only did they not repack any items we had packed, but they also didn’t even repack a handful of items that we asked them to repack on the day. There was no $400 discount on the full pack service, it was a $183.60 discount, and it was because they didn’t have to do all of the work that they were originally going to be charging us for.

      d. If Bold Moving would like to make any additional untrue claims in response to this review, I will be ready with the receipts.

FACT: Pick-up day was an extremely long day (the crew were at our home for 13.5 hours, from 11 am to almost 1 am), and by all appearances at the time, the 3-person was taking extra care of our items. We were promised during our thorough walkthrough with the crew chief that everything would be carefully packed and protected, pointed out specific items (mostly artwork) that needed to be packed very carefully, we told them items that were NOT to be packed (a mattress) and items that we had packed but wanted them to repack (which they did not). We then stayed out of their way and let the professionals do their work.

One exception was when we noticed that while we had been told that our clothes that were on hangers would be hung in hanging wardrobe boxes, instead, the movers removed the hanging rods, tossed them on the floor (and left them there), and just threw clothes that had been hung to keep from wrinkling into a box as shown in the two uploaded photos. Upon unpacking, most of these items were newly wrinkled and unwearable without ironing/pressing, when they had been already ironed and pressed at the time of pickup.

FACT: Tom assured me in writing (email) prior to the move that every person involved in the move from pickup to drop-off was an employee of Bold Moving, and that they did not use outside non-employee contractors. On 11/5/24 when our items were delivered, there were two men, who arrived separately from each other. One driving the truck (Mark, an employee of Bold Moving), and another man who was NOT an employee of Bold Moving – he was a local Florida independent moving company owner, who provided me with his business card, told me to reach out to him if there were ever any issues or future needs, and stated on more than one occasion that he was not an employee of Bold Moving.

As recently as 2/10/25 Tom attempted to deny, on the phone, that they never used any nonemployee contractors. He told me, “We have people who we can’t even find work for.’ I don’t know anything about who their employees are, but I do know that the non-driver “Marcus” was absolutely not an employee of Bold Moving. Ultimately and ironically, “Marcus” was the most ethical and responsible person in the entire process, but this demonstrates that even to this day Tom would rather lie and deny an unmistakable fact than accept responsibility for anything being other than promised.

      PAGE 4

FACT: When the moving truck arrived at our home in Florida on the morning of 11/5/24, there was a commotion outside. Unlike the truck that picked up our items (a normal size box truck) the truck dropping off our items was a 50’ 18-wheel tractor trailer with a 4000 cf capacity. Tom mentioned to us before the move that our storage facility would need to be able to accommodate a tractor-trailer, but not once did he ask for any details of our home, our street, etc. We live on a cul-de-sac with a center island and this enormous 18-wheeler was unable to navigate the cul-de-sac without damaging our lawn, two neighbor’s lawns, and the center island. 3 pictures of the damage caused are uploaded with this review.

The commotion was our neighbor across the street screaming at the movers and threatening to call the police. This 4000 cf capacity truck was almost 2/3 empty, as our items only took up approximately 900cf. A photo of the truck at arrival is uploaded with the review. We were told by the driver immediately that Bold would “definitely take care of this” and that this “happened all the time.” He reported it, along with pictures, to his superiors. I also texted Tom the 3 pictures and he replied that “the owner is calling the driver now; we’ll get it resolved.” I asked him to confirm that they would repair or pay to repair the damage in writing, and he did not respond. As of 3+ months later, we still have NEVER heard another thing from Bold about this, no attempt was ever made to fix or correct this damage to our and our neighbor’s property.

FACT: Mark, the driver, had no idea that there was a second stop to be made at a storage facility, despite the fact we had made that clear to Tom and Tom had confirmed it with us. He then told me that on the truck there was no separation between items marked for storage and for the house as there should have been, and well over 50% of the boxes on the truck had no markings whatsoever as to whether they were for the house or the storage facility. As a result, for the ENTIRE unloading process, we then had to stand at the base of the truck while they opened each unmarked box to identify what it was and where it was to go. We had made it very clear to the packers in our original home what was to go to storage and what was to go to our house.

NOW FOR THE most alarming part of this – NEGLIGENCE IN PACKING.

PAGE 5: HOW DID THEY PACK OUR VALUABLE ARTWORK?

At our walkthrough on pickup/packing day, we showed the packing crew two different “batches” of framed and unframed art. They included multiple pieces of extremely rare and fine artwork, one-of-a-kind pieces that were painted and framed by the artist in Brazil, 50+ year old original pieces painted by my now-deceased grandfather, etc. We expressed to them directly how delicate and important this artwork was to us. They assured us repeatedly that they would take excellent care of our items and pack everything so that it would not be in danger.

Upon arrival, we were absolutely shocked to see that other than a handful of oversized pieces that could not fit in a box, virtually all of this valuable and delicate artwork in frames, canvases, etc. had been loosely placed into large wardrobe boxes, with no individual wrapping, no packing materials whatsoever, no protection, no bubble wrap, or any other protection at all – they were just placed into boxes, rubbing up against each other, frames banging against frames, nothing separating them, frames packed diagonally with corners or frames up against the glass from other frames – it was an absolute mess.

You can see the opening of the first box of art (with zero protection) and additional art-related photos and videos of damage and how they were packed in the uploaded pictures and videos. The two movers unpacking were incredulous that the artwork had been packed this way. In one of the videos, I asked Marcus if he had ever seen artwork packed like that before. His answer was “Not me personally, no.”

At this point, I contacted Tom by phone, very emotional (because my wife was crying over this) and he denied any responsibility, told me that the items were packed appropriately, told me that there was “no real damage” and that it “wouldn’t cost anything for us to fix.” No empathy, no acknowledgment, no effort to get to the bottom of how this happened. Just denials.

To this date, Tom denies that these items were packed inappropriately, despite common sense and his own hired contractor stating on camera (which he knew he was being recorded) that this was something he had never once seen before. I then texted Tom with photos of scuffed and chipped picture frames, as well as scratches on glass (all of which you can see on the video I uploaded), and asked him to put what he had said on the phone about artwork “being packed properly” in writing that Bold Moving’s policy is that packing valuable artwork in a box unprotected is normal procedure. I asked him this by text a second time. He completely ignored and failed to respond to any of these texts.

PAGE 6: HOW DID THEY PACK OUR VALUABLE CHINA/CRYSTAL/GLASSWARE?

When we arrived at the storage facility, we (along with the movers) opened some of the boxes to see what kind of shape they were in, and found multiple boxes with glass/crystal/china that was loosely packed into boxes, with little or no protection, largely unwrapped or wrapped with other glass in the same wrapping. Yes, many items were packed properly (specifically the kitchen glassware, which the crew chief packed himself while the other two were packing the dining room glassware and artwork) but a large number of items were negligently packed.

In one of the videos I uploaded with the review, I asked Marcus whether it is normal for glassware to be packed loose as our boxes were packed and he says, emphatically, “Never, never, not even remotely close., not even remotely close. That should’ve never been that way.” The packaging was extremely NEGLIGENT, with NO effort given to avoid damage to our property. It was so bad that Bold’s own employee and their hired nonemployee contractor continually asked me “Were the guys that packed this in a rush?”

We opened more boxes later, and saw multiple boxes of glassware were packed loosely, including the fine Waterford crystal glasses (which were wedding gifts), delicate china from 1940s from England that was passed down by our grandparents, and other items shown in the videos we have uploaded that were broken because they were just packed in a box without anything close to appropriate wrapping, bubble-wrap, or any other protection from the other delicate items. 8 fragile crystal glasses just laid next to each other unwrapped, loose glasses, etc.

Photos of how these glass items were packed, including photos of breakage in the boxes are seen in the uploads to this review. In all, at least 14 Waterford Crystal glasses (which cost $110 each to replace), multiple pieces of irreplaceable family heirloom china, and multiple other, less valuable glass items were destroyed.

After the traumatic unpacking day of 11/5/2025, we were sent a claim form in an email from Tom. We were instructed to provide details of all items, along with “inventory numbers” from the original inventory, which was a task that Tom knew was impossible because the inventory list did not itemize actual items but instead simply mentioned boxes. It’s impossible to know which inventory number corresponds to which box contains broken items, and Tom knows that. Ultimately, we provided the details with a very conservative estimate of the damages we incurred and stated emphatically that this was not damage due to accident or customer error, it was expressly due to negligence, and we expected Bold to disregard the “normal” claims process of 60 cents per pound in light of their negligence and the significant damages caused by their negligence.

Instead, we received the attached “claims evaluation” which weighed (inaccurately) the items that broke at a total of 27 pounds and offered us a grand total of $16.50 as compensation for $5,000+ of damages not including priceless sentimental items that were damaged and unrepairable to their original condition. Yes, I acknowledge that they are claiming and holding to their minimum obligations according to the insurance contract, and that is their right. However, it says a lot about a company who cultivates your trust in their professionalism, then handles your personal items this way, who says they value integrity over profit, for them to offer $16.50 as total compensation for this travesty.

We did contact our credit card company to dispute the portion of the transaction charged to a credit card (the 30% deposit of $1876.36 paid on 10/11/24) under the premise that the service we paid for (moving our items properly and carefully) not being provided as promised, however, Bold Moving responded by telling them “the goods were as described and received in good condition.” And the claim was denied – quite obviously the details and evidence in this review show this to be a farce.

On 2/9 we made a complaint to the BBB regarding our experience. This led to the most last (so far) insult from Tom and Bold Moving – a 38-minute phone call from Tom on 2/10/2025. Tom called with the expressed intent to try to “make things right” and asked me what I felt would be appropriate. I told him I already had provided them with that answer on the claim form. He responded that they could increase their offer from $16.50 to $100, maybe $150, and I told him that it was laughable and unacceptable.

He continued to ask me what I wanted from them, and I told him acknowledgment that they packed the items negligently (which he refused) and that I already told them what compensation I felt was reasonable. He told me that they were not going to go above $150, and I wasn’t about to get into a financial negotiation with someone so unwilling to take responsibility for his company’s negligence. This has never been about money – though an attempt to actually make things right from the start with an offer of reimbursement that reflects what they broke, not just their “minimum contractual liability’ would be an appropriate response.

My response to them has been about being treated fairly. It has been about getting them to acknowledge that they have dealt with us in poor faith, making promises they did not keep, making demonstrably false statements, denying responsibility for the way our items were packed by their employees, failing to follow through on pledged repairs (our landscaping). While Tom continues to say that he is trying to be helpful, every action he has taken on behalf of Bold Moving has been to deny, distract with falsehoods, delay by not responding to certain specific requests, and to tell us that our move was done as well as it could have been done despite all evidence to the contrary. Because it has become clear that they did not intend on treating us fairly, I told Tom during this phone call that I would be leaving reviews of my entire experience with them.

At this point, he actually told me that I was “threatening” him. I did not tell him “Pay me XX or I’ll leave bad reviews.” I told him I was leaving reviews to help others avoid having the same awful experience I did. This was the final insult in a long list of them – being told that leaving a truthful, honest, and factual review with incontrovertible evidence of the experience was somehow ME trying to “hurt” or “threaten” them when in fact he, and they, are the ones who have hurt themselves by acting negligently and then making it far worse by the way they responded to my concerns. While it is clear that by far not every customer of Bold Moving has had these problems, and they have many satisfied customers along with the unsatisfied ones – I have shared with you my experience and hope that I have helped you gain perspective on one person’s outcome of hiring Bold Moving and Storage.

I will only use BOLD moving forward! We have used different movers in the past that have left us unhappy, but the professionalism at BOLD has been unmatched. John made our move so easy, relaxing and stress free. He guided us through each and every step and made us feel confident about our move. The team of movers were very kind and helpful! They made sure the move was done efficiently and answered any questions we had, and were very careful with our valuables. I highly recommend BOLD and feel comfortable knowing we will have reliable movers in the future if needed!

      Updated review: July 12, 2024

***UPDATE*** On July 10, the owner (Bill) spoke with me about what was happening on their end and I appreciated the transparency and direct communication. He assured me that my items would be delivered by July 16 and that he would call by end of business July 12 to confirm. My items were delivered on July 11 by Mike and Bill, himself! Coordinating an inter-state move is stressful and trusting strangers with my belongings added to my stress a bit. However, Bold Moving and Storage made my move much easier and I would use them again.

      Original Review: July 10, 2024

I hired Bold Moving and Storage in August 2023 to move my belongings from Miami, FL to Virginia. I also purchased storage since I would not be in Virginia for a few months. However, I was not sure of my exact address or date of arrival. I packed my belongings myself and moved a few pieces of furniture and a TV. The movers who arrived in October were efficient and did a good job. I paid for storage on a monthly basis and called on June 18, 2024 to notify Bold Moving that I would no longer need storage and that I would be arriving in Virginia on July 8. I was told that was too far in advance to schedule delivery and that they would be in touch.

I arrived in Virginia on July 8 and they have not been in touch. I’ve called to schedule delivery, but they have not provided a delivery date or time. This is my first time using a local moving company and movers. I usually use moving containers and hire people (i.e., TaskRabbits) to move my belongings. I am trying to give this situation the benefit of the doubt, but I am not satisfied with the level of communication, transparency, or follow-through. I will update this review and ratings as things progress.

I usually don't write reviews unless the service/business is outstanding or very poor. Background: I contacted this business sometime Q4 of 2023 as I planned to move from SC to GA. I paid an initial deposit of $1.8k in order move forward with the booking, however I had some unexpected life changes after the deposit was paid (unexpected family health changes and the housing market wasn't favorable - I could not sell my SC home, interest rates were astronomically high). In essence, I decided that I'll no longer be moving.

I requested a refund of my deposit since I no longer needed this service. I was in contact with Jennifer ** who after a few calls/texts, assured me that a refund would be issued in a few weeks. After a few weeks passed Jennifer ** and the business stopped responding to my requests/texts/calls. This isn't a way to treat your clients or business network. I'd think twice before booking with them just because this type of conduct resembles unethical, money-hungry culture in the company. I'm currently working the details to file a small claims law suit against them & will update this review as the process unfolds. Stay tuned.
