What is AlterMe?

AlterMe is a health and wellness company that offers personalized fitness plans using DNA testing and biometric data. The process starts with the DNA test, which helps narrow down the approach to weight loss that will work best for you. It then uses a fitness tracker to deliver personalized recommendations based on your data.

How does AlterMe work?

The AlterMe program starts with the company’s DNA test kit. The test analyzes 60 genetic markers to assess 13 health and fitness traits. There’s no obligation with the test; you can choose to take the information and use it on your own, or you can subscribe to the full AlterMe program.

If you opt for the program, you’ll receive a fitness tracker ring. The information from the DNA test and ring is used to provide a number of personalized services as part of the plan, including nutrition recommendations and personalized workout and wellness sessions that adjust based on daily readiness levels. You can also use the app and your smartphone camera to log meals and track body composition.

AlterMe testing process

The process begins when you purchase and register your AlterMe DNA kit. The test itself is a saliva test; you swab the inside of your cheek for about a minute. Then you seal up the test kit and ship it via USPS.

Once received, AlterMe will analyze your sample, with results typically ready in five to seven business days. Results are delivered as a personalized report outlining how your body is likely to respond to different foods, exercise styles and rest patterns. The kit includes a 30-minute consultation with a fitness advisor to review the results and answer questions.

AlterMe plans and pricing

The AlterMe service consists of two parts: the DNA test and the wellness program.

  • DNA test kit: $99
  • AlterMe plan: $99 down and $66 per month
  • AlterMe Pro plan: $199 down and $112 per month

The DNA test kit includes the assessment and a one-on-one expert call to discuss your results.

The AlterMe plan includes the following features:

  • DNA test kit
  • Expert-led kickoff call
  • AlterMe fitness tracker
  • Personalized daily fitness plans
  • Sleep and exercise readiness insights
  • Cognitive reframing exercises
  • Real-time vitals checks
  • App-based body scans to track progress
  • Mindfulness and rest-focused sessions
  • AI-based nutrition coaching
  • Up-to-date workout library

AlterMe Pro includes all the above features, plus the AlterMe Screen. This is a smart fitness screen that tracks your movements during workouts to provide more detailed feedback. It also offers a larger display than a phone.

The DNA test kit is included in the cost of the AlterMe plans, but it can also be purchased separately.

Monthly plans are advertised as being for 36 months, but the company claims that you can cancel any time; you’re not locked into the subscription for 36 months.

I am a physician specializing in wellness and internal medicine. I have been recommending and using Alterme for over a year. I have logged over 700 sessions including cardio, strength, meditation and breathing exercises and going strong. The program attracted me initially by analyzing my genetic DNA driven health strengths and weaknesses (stress). This has given me insight and direction into my personalize program. The alterme biometric band and now the updated alterme ring gives health metrics into sleep, heart rate activity, heart rate variability and is core to my workouts and stress management. The alterme ring is attractive and is a conversation starter with my patients about their wellness challenges. I lead by example. However, it is the multiple fitness applications including progressive cardio, strength, meditation and breathing exercises that are core to the program.

The program is fun to use, easy to follow the exercises, the screen is awesome, easy setup, and there are constant user improvements. The recent addition of Pilates with Sorel and Meditation with Nikki add to the experience. Meagan's strength exercises are my go to workouts. I have recommended ALTERME to all my patients on GLP1 medication and all who are striving to achieve their optimum wellness. I can honestly say the ALTERME program has had the best overall impact on my personal health wellness journey. My patients who have started the program have thank me for the introduction into this platform. The ALTERME is the first to incorporate the advanced technology available with a fun fitness program that is geared to all levels of fitness. I highly recommend ALTERME.

I’ve been using the Alter Ring along with the AlterMe app, and overall my experience has been very positive. The ring is comfortable to wear, lightweight, and easy to forget about during the day. I like that it tracks a variety of health metrics without being bulky or distracting. The AlterMe app is very user-friendly and gives clear explanations of each health score. I’ve found the recommendations helpful, especially the personalized goals and tips. It has helped me understand my sleep, stress levels, and activity patterns in a more meaningful way.

There were a few small learning curves at the beginning, such as getting used to the syncing and exploring all the features, but after the first couple of days everything became straightforward. Customer support was responsive and the setup instructions were clear. Overall, the combination of the ring and the app has helped me stay more aware of my daily habits and motivated me to make healthier choices. I would recommend it to anyone who wants easy, continuous tracking without wearing a smartwatch.

I love my Alter mirror and the app. I struggled with using workout apps on my phone. I love waking up in the morning and met with the gentle lighting around the outside of the mirror. I don't like turning on the lights, so this soothes me. I also love that there is not a lot of chatting like the usual three person session. You watch a trainer explain and it's on a timer, so a 10 min or 20 min workout is truly that. I love that if you do the workouts requested for the week it waives the app fee; so I just pay the monthly payment for the mirror and it's totally worth it. No more trying to watch my little phone. If I'm lying down stretching I can watch the mirror and not move to see the change.

The DNA testing was insightful; it started me out and moved me at the right pace. Other programs I would be so sore I couldn't move forward. I feel it but it's at the right pace for me. I LOVE ALTER. I'm in perimenopause with anemia with a quick weight gain and inflammation. I had not worked out in 14 years. The pictures are a year apart. Please reach out if you want more information.

I love my alter system! The DNA was very insightful and gave me a good foundation to start the program. I started in February with the wristband I used it to sleep and track my workouts. Recently I purchased the ring. I wear the ring all day everyday. It is very accurate as I have a Garmin that does the same thing and they are in perfect sync. The workouts are tailored to you. When you wear your ring to sleep wake up log in the app and based on your sleep gives your workout that day. Also, with the mirror they have playlist to workout to that is preloaded with different genre’s. Awesome Songs! The workouts get casted from the phone to the screen. It’s honestly pretty cool. For the eating portion no longer do you need to log each thing you eat because you take a picture and it’s done for you!!! I would give the system 10 stars if I could. Thank you Alter!

Hi everyone. I got my AlterMe pro 3 days ago and honestly it is fascinating how it works. The ring is gorgeous I got mine in gold, very comfortable. Keep in mind the tester size is bulky and is less comfortable. Choose the size that seats snug but not super tight, the real deal is way more comfortable, you don’t want it to fall while you are running around or washing dishes. My favorite part of the morning now is to check how i slept, now it makes sense why i have been waking up tired, barely get deep sleep and the meditation before bed helps. The mirror is my favorite thing honestly, without it I would probably be less enthusiastic to work out. It’s less of a chore and more of a fun activity to me. I have been working out for a long time barely seeing results and honestly I am very excited to try something that is designed specifically for me

Amelia! I love that you’re noticing what’s been missing in your sleep and finally getting answers — that’s such a game-changer. And I totally agree, the real ring is so much better than the tester! It’s amazing to hear the Mirror turned workouts from a chore into something fun. You sound so ready for this next chapter, and we’re cheering you on every step. 🏃‍♀️

Buyer Beware! They advertise AlterMe to be HSA/FSA eligible. This was the main reasons I bought the ring. Unfortunately AlterMe has not been able to provide the necessary documentation to my FSA company so I can be reimbursed. I’ve reached out to my salesperson (Adam) and have not gotten a response. The initial cost for the ring was $99. The rest of cost is being financed at $125 a month for 12 months.

I purchased the dna kit at a discount. You do have to listen to a sales pitch. I knew this ahead of the game. I did decide to go ahead and purchase the whole kit, the ring, mirror. They were having a sale. I paid 99 down and 75 a month for 20 something months. Everything came quick. The ring was very bulky and I decided not for me. Then they offered to exchange it for a slim ring, This was much better. I have been using it ever since. I think I'm a month in. The ring does not register your sleep correctly. I try to relax around 830 and sleep at 9. I always get up at 4 for drink of water and go back to sleep. I never has me a sleep when I fall asleep and has me awake a 4. So then my daily score is low.

Since the ring is not accurate neither is there recommendations for the day. You also log your food. It is a pain because the information they have is never right and I have go in and change the macros. For something so expensive I expected better performance, I can even cancel or return. I do still with the program since I'm paying so much, so that's a plus.

I wish I had read the reviews before agreeing to this. The ring doesn’t work. It is has never been accurate in my step count - off by thousands of steps compared to two other step counting devices. The ring glows green most of the time - which is annoying to sleep with and will ruin a photo by reflecting green everywhere. And the app doesn’t work like it said it would. They keep sending emails saying that it is due to an outage with a third party. After reading the reviews, sounds like it’s been a pretty long outage. Don’t waste your money. Which, by the way, is a ton of money…

Initially, I thought that the ring was great. But since then it has not been working properly. Does not track my sleep as it always seems to be disconnected. I also bought it with my FSA card and was told that it would be FSA eligible and since then I have been unable to get a legitimate receipt to turn in to my FSA card. I have asked for a receipt several times with no response. The only time they ever responded was to sell me another ring when mine was lost. Typical company trying to capitalize on people’s insecurities. Not worth $1699.

I’ve taken a couple DNA tests before and they mostly focused on ancestry. I was curious what a health-focused report would look like. The DNA+ version was surprisingly insightful, especially the sections about micronutrients and metabolic patterns. It gave me context I never had before.
