What is AlterMe?

AlterMe is a health and wellness company that offers personalized fitness plans using DNA testing and biometric data. The process starts with the DNA test, which helps narrow down the approach to weight loss that will work best for you. It then uses a fitness tracker to deliver personalized recommendations based on your data.

How does AlterMe work?

The AlterMe program starts with the company’s DNA test kit. The test analyzes 60 genetic markers to assess 13 health and fitness traits. There’s no obligation with the test; you can choose to take the information and use it on your own, or you can subscribe to the full AlterMe program.

If you opt for the program, you’ll receive a fitness tracker ring. The information from the DNA test and ring is used to provide a number of personalized services as part of the plan, including nutrition recommendations and personalized workout and wellness sessions that adjust based on daily readiness levels. You can also use the app and your smartphone camera to log meals and track body composition.

AlterMe testing process

The process begins when you purchase and register your AlterMe DNA kit. The test itself is a saliva test; you swab the inside of your cheek for about a minute. Then you seal up the test kit and ship it via USPS.

Once received, AlterMe will analyze your sample, with results typically ready in five to seven business days. Results are delivered as a personalized report outlining how your body is likely to respond to different foods, exercise styles and rest patterns. The kit includes a 30-minute consultation with a fitness advisor to review the results and answer questions.

AlterMe plans and pricing

The AlterMe service consists of two parts: the DNA test and the wellness program.

  • DNA test kit: $99
  • AlterMe plan: $99 down and $66 per month
  • AlterMe Pro plan: $199 down and $112 per month

The DNA test kit includes the assessment and a one-on-one expert call to discuss your results.

The AlterMe plan includes the following features:

  • DNA test kit
  • Expert-led kickoff call
  • AlterMe fitness tracker
  • Personalized daily fitness plans
  • Sleep and exercise readiness insights
  • Cognitive reframing exercises
  • Real-time vitals checks
  • App-based body scans to track progress
  • Mindfulness and rest-focused sessions
  • AI-based nutrition coaching
  • Up-to-date workout library

AlterMe Pro includes all the above features, plus the AlterMe Screen. This is a smart fitness screen that tracks your movements during workouts to provide more detailed feedback. It also offers a larger display than a phone.

The DNA test kit is included in the cost of the AlterMe plans, but it can also be purchased separately.

Monthly plans are advertised as being for 36 months, but the company claims that you can cancel any time; you’re not locked into the subscription for 36 months.

I have had the best experience with them! I had surgery in March on my hand and my finger is still swollen and they are sending me a new ring free of charge!

I enjoy the Alterme ring and app. The app, along with the ring, tells me each morning what exercise routine is best for the day. I also log my meals and track my calories, protein, fat, and carbs. You can also use the app to track your steps.

I signed up for AlterMe 2 months ago after have trouble losing weight and feeling rested. So far it has been a great experience! The workouts provided in the app are easy to follow, customizable by time/type/level, and even change as you get stronger. The program makes it super easy to know what workout to do each day. I was also surprised to learn that my body performed better by giving it more time to rest than I realized. So that insight was helpful in my weight loss and strength journey. The customer service has been outstanding as well. Any question or issue I have had was quickly resolved. I also appreciate the DNA results that have been shared. Extremely interesting to understand what foods, exercise type, and recovery works for my body.

I’ve taken a couple DNA tests before and they mostly focused on ancestry. I was curious what a health-focused report would look like. The DNA+ version was surprisingly insightful, especially the sections about micronutrients and metabolic patterns. It gave me context I never had before.

The biggest surprise from my DNA report was learning that my metabolism responds better to higher protein intake than I realized. I increased protein in my meals and noticed I stayed fuller longer. Over six months I lost 18 pounds without feeling like I was dieting.

Scam-that sums up this company. I have reported them to government agency. They never followed through with scheduled calls with fitness advisor. They never sent me the results of my test (they were supposed to during the fitness advisor call). Now that have my DNA, and all I have is frustration and unanswered questions.

I wish I had researched this more, so that’s on me. I was hopeful that I would get some enlightening information about why I can’t lose weight. It was all very general and I was just average across the board. Except for bone density which I recently had checked. AlterMe said slightly above risk and my doctor said I “could be the poster child for women my age”! Then came the sales pitch and then the by the book pressure to which I could and did predict what would be said. At that point, I decided I had wasted enough of my money and wasn’t going to spend any more. So, basically, I learned nothing towards my weight loss journey.

I did my DNA test for 30.00. I am currently trying to cancel - and they are holding 799.99 for the DNA test for the "additional testing". Nowhere did it say that if I joined he App would I be charged another non refundable fee of 799.00. The original 30.00 price is misleading.

The first person I spoke with made this company seem fantastic, sounded like they check in on you and and that it was more than wearing an expensive, uncomfortable ring and doing exercises they suggested. A week in I realized this wasn't as expected and I hated wearing the bulky ring. I asked about canceling since they said I had 30 days to do so. And was met with well you still have to pay 800 bucks. For what? Some in-depth dna results I NEVER RECEIVED.

A week later I called and asked again to cancel. And I was still in the 30 day time frame. They refused to cancel it. And tell me I was on the hook for the 800. Again for results I never received. I never got the label to return their products. I have tried to google where to return it to. With no luck. Then their finance started calling me and emailing me, I told them I tried canceling this and the company wouldn't let me. So they said they'd reach out to the company to find out. I have yet to hear back from either company. And I still have their products in a box ready to ship back. I haven't used the ring in MONTHS, I deactivated my account on their app and deleted the app.

Buyer Beware! They advertise AlterMe to be HSA/FSA eligible. This was the main reasons I bought the ring. Unfortunately AlterMe has not been able to provide the necessary documentation to my FSA company so I can be reimbursed. I’ve reached out to my salesperson (Adam) and have not gotten a response. The initial cost for the ring was $99. The rest of cost is being financed at $125 a month for 12 months.
