The glass in our Martha Stewart Melrose table shattered like many others, apparently. However, I know exactly why it shattered. When we would move the table from one spot to another, we would drag it with the umbrella still attached. Well, after a number of years of this abuse on our part, one of the lower support brackets for the umbrella broke at the weld and caused the umbrella pole to wedge against the glass and it shattered. Just wondering if this could have happened to others? Since this was our fault, we went to Kmart, manned up, and bought a new table. Problem solved. We remove the umbrella when the table is not in use.

My Martha Stewart glass-top patio table just spontaneously exploded this week. I only learned tonight that this has happened to a lot of people. I just wanted to add my name to the numbers! Thank you. Luckily, no one was near it, but I am out the purchase price. I spent hard earned money on this table before I retired, thinking it would last a long, long time. Not!

I purchased Martha Stewart’s Palisades set with the lazy Susan in the center, outdoor furniture in May of this year for Memorial Day. Not even 60 days later, I looked out my patio door and discovered my patio table was shattered in millions of pieces. All I have left is the lazy Susan and the table frame where the glass used to be. No one can tell me how to replace my table and the season is not over. What can I do to get my table replaced? I feel I should be compensated in some way. As a result, I am stuck with brand new chairs and umbrella and no table. No one was physically injured.

My glass table top of Martha Stewart patio furniture just shattered into a million pieces; it literally exploded. Luckily, no one was at the table. I was many rooms away from the table when I heard a small explosion. I found the table top shattered and the glass is still crackling like popcorn. There is glass everywhere over my deck and I have small grandchildren that play out there every day in the summer which it is right now. I don't know when they will be able to go out there again and don't know long it is going to take to clean all this glass up; it is literally everywhere in the smallest, tiniest pieces. Needless to say that I spent over $300 on the whole set of table and chairs and I am going to be unable to even use any of it for the rest of the summer.

I purchased a Martha Stewart patio set, which I have had for a few years, from Kmart on July 25, 2009. My son, wife, and two children were at my home when they heard this loud crash. They went to the back doors on my patio, only to see the entire top of the table on the floor. The glass top had exploded, and the glass was so hot that it was bouncing up off the floor. There was no one outside or around the table at the time. It just shattered on its own.
I would like to know what I can do about this. Kmart will not give me any information on how to replace the table, and no one will tell me who the manufacturer is. I don't want a replacement for the glass, because I am not sure why it shattered and don't want to take the risk that another one won't do the same thing. I have five grandchildren, who are at my house on a regular basis, and I will not run the risk of this happening when they are outside. If one of my grandchildren or my children had been sitting at that table when it happened, I would hate to think what might have happened. I still have the glass that was cleaned up and would like someone to tell me if this has happened to others, who purchased Martha Stewart furniture.

This morning, 7/25/09 at about 9 a.m., the glass table top in our Martha Stewart table purchased at Kmart in the Washington Street Shopping Center in Las Vegas, basically blew up into a million pieces. We are lucky that our dog, Rat Terrier-18 lbs., or anyone else was not on the patio at the time. We purchased this set, table, five chairs, chaise and a couple of extra chair seats in Spring of 2005. We have always liked the set. I never thought a glass table top could explode like this. It is identical to photos on the web. The chair fabric is also very poor and rotting. It was a hot summer day in western Colorado. I was sitting inside my office reading a book, with the window open and the swamp cooler on. I heard an awful crashing noise outside, I saw my dog cowering, and looked over to see my rectangular glass Martha Stewart table completely shattered. The table was under a covered/wooden patio canopy. I thought something must have fallen to cause this. Not the case! It literally just crashed and it only had on it a plate of seashells and, of course, my daughter and her two friends painted flower pots from camp.
I immediately tried to clean up the shards of glass so my dog wouldn't step in it, but the glass was literally popping and was landing on my feet. I had my neighbor come over to listen and he agreed, saw and heard the glass popping. My patio is covered, so the table never really receives direct sunlight, it is filtered. I do live in the desert, so it was 100 degrees out.
I immediately took pictures and drove to K-mart to see if there had been some sort of recall on the table or if this had happened before. They denied anything. It wasn't until I got online that I found out the truth. I will be returning to K-mart with the article I found online. I know I will probably never be financially reimbursed for this, but maybe I can spare someone else the hardship and the danger.

I purchased a $400 Martha Stewart patio furniture set at Kmart in Holland, Michigan during May of 2008. For one year, this set met my basic needs, with the table exposed to the outdoors only until October when it was moved indoors for storage due to freezing temperatures. In early July of 2009, I returned home to find the table completely shattered for no reason whatsoever. No object came in contact with the table, winds were mild, and temperatures peaked at 75 degrees. There is no acceptable reason for this table to have shattered as it did. With shards of glass covering my deck, having fallen through the cracks in the boards to the rocks and grass below, and lots of young children's feet everywhere around, this event was highly distressing. Despite sweeping and vacuuming with a Shop Vac, reappearing glass shards continue to present themselves daily. The estimate from my glass company (Glass Enterprises, Holland MI) to replace this 38" x 64" piece of tempered glass is $240.

The cushions were put inside my house during the winter months and when we got them out for the summer, the material was coming apart. Yesterday, the table exploded for no reason. We were about to go on the deck for dinner. It shattered into a million pieces. I called Kmart who said this thing happens. I read the info in the box the furniture came in. I asked where does it say the tables explode on your website that I read before making a decision. I said it should be illegal to sell these tables if they explode and you're aware of it. He said he can't do anything because glass breaks and it's not covered.
He said there is a number I can call to report this and they'll give me a number to call to get a replacement top. I said, “At no charge?” He laughed and said, “No, you have to pay.” The number was 1-888-289-8616. The lady took my info and said she'd report it. I said, “What will you do for me? Many pieces embedded themselves into the wood and I had to pry them out and then try to vacuum them up. It was a terrible mess as our glass top was a large rectangle. As I went on the internet to find a replacement Martha Stewart glass table, I found information about other people's glass table tops shattering. There was a site listed to file a consumer complaint.

In June 2009, Chase sent me a notice on 4 cards with the 3.99% balance that the minimum payment was going from 2% to 5%. The total balance on these cards is about $50,000, meaning the minimum payment will go from about $1,000 to $2,500. Chase offered no opt outs, such as canceling the card to keep the current terms. I think that this practice of Chase is in violation of truth in lending laws, as they are changing the basic terms on low interest accounts and not on regular accounts in order to force customers to switch to higher interest rate accounts.

I am out of work at the time so I don’t think I am going to be able to afford to replace it. So, one of my biggest joys that keeps me going each day is gone. There is nothing like getting up each morning and going and sitting out on the patio with a cup of coffee.

I have lots of pictures I took and will share them with anyone. Needless to say, I have gotten a few glass cuts trying to clean this up. The table is now unusable at a cost of $650.00 for the whole patio set. The large room rug that the table was sitting on is now unusable due to not being able to get all the glass pieces out of it. I did email a complaint to the Kmart customer service. They also said that there was nothing they could do.
How can a company know that there is a problem or design flaw and do nothing about it? Obviously, there is a problem--table tops exploding for no reason and companies taking no responsibility for their defective products. I purchased my set thinking that I would have it for a number of years. Five years later, I have to replace it. I will never buy another item with Martha Stewart's name on it. I am only writing to add my name to the list of thousands who have had a similar problem with Martha Stewart patio table glass tops exploding into million is pieces for no apparent reason. I had a set from Kmart in Valley Steam on Long Island in NY. It was purchased in May. A few months later, it shattered for no apparent reason on a clear moderate temp day with no one in area. I looked out the window to find the tabletop in a zillion pieces on the patio. I called Kmart and got no assistance. I demanded a phone number for the manufacturer. I screamed cried and threatened when they told me there was nothing they could do. I persisted and the woman finally agreed to send me, free of charge, a replacement glass. It was shipped to my home directly at no charge. Needless to say, I was quite satisfied. However, two years later, the same thing happened. At that point, I threw the garbage out.
I will be interested to know if there will be a class action lawsuit. There are certainly enough complaints to warrant one. I am now in the process of trying to find a replacement top for my Better Homes and Gardens glass patio table purchased in Walmart in Cary, NC. I purchased this set in August 2008, and the same thing happened to this tabletop. I think there is more happening here than meets the eye. The cost to replace a glass patio tabletop is usually more than the cost to just buy another set. Most manufacturers don't sell replacement glass, nor do they sell the table without the chairs. Consumers are being ripped off at an astonishing pace with regard to outdoor furniture, and have little, if any recourse to the store where the item was purchased, or to the manufacturer of the item. It is just despicable that the consumer has no remedy for this nonsense. They just keep figuring we'll just go buy another rather than replace the glass, etc. Something should be done to protect the consumer from such underhanded practices.

It never occurred to us that it was a flaw in the product, we just assumed it was a fluke. We looked around for a dead bird that might have flown into it, a rock that might have been thrown, etc., but found no evidence of anything that would have caused this to happen. Nothing was blown over, so there was no evidence of a strong wind. We were quoted a price of $400 to replace the glass so we never did it. Tonight, I was looking up the set, trying to replace a missing part of the umbrella so that I could use it. I Googled Martha Stewart patio furniture/Kmart only to find several articles about spontaneously shattering glass on these tables! I can't believe it! I was shocked to find a million pieces of glass lying on the floor. The patio cushions were laying on top of the table so I knew nothing could have fallen on top of it. I paid $800 for the set.

I purchased the Martha Stewart bar patio set. The glass top shattered in one section and the entire set is useless now. Nothing caused the glass to shatter. It just happened. The entire bar top needs to be replaced. I need to buy another set, but not a Martha Stewart product. This is part of the Melrose Collection. I need a replacement bar / glass top or new bar needs to be replaced. The glass is everywhere on the patio and mixed in with the decorative rocks in the landscaping.

I purchased a Martha Stewart patio table and chairs several years back. The glass top shattered in Fall 2007. I did a Google search to see about finding a replacement table, but when I arrived at this site, I was surprised to find that I'm not alone. I came home to find the umbrella was sitting in the middle of an empty tabletop metal rim. I cleaned the glass except for what fell underneath the deck.

My glass tabletop on my Martha Stewart patio table shattered into a thousand little pieces. I bought the table at Kmart and contacted them and they said there was nothing they could do about it, the table is useless now. Is there any kind of class action suit against them?

My boyfriend and I were sitting at our Martha Stewart Melrose patio set on Easter Sunday and all of a sudden the glass exploded, literally exploded in trillions of pieces of glass shards all over us and my deck. Thank God, no one was seriously hurt but he did suffer three bloody cuts. The glass was all over our legs and clothing. It was a horrible, horrible mess, not to mention it took literally hours to clean up. We're afraid our kids, pets or ourselves could still get cut from the glass that is wedged in our deck. I have read numerous complaints about the exact same thing happening. I paid over $500 for this set. Now, I have six chairs and a table with no glass. I am very disappointed in the quality of this patio set. I will never buy anything with Martha Stewart's name on it ever again nor will any of my friends or family.

I bought a Martha Stewart patio dining set from Kmart. For no reason, the glass table top shattered. I found on the internet this has happened to hundreds of people and Kmart/Martha Stewart knew of the glass table top defect. Is there a class action suit in progress? This defective furniture is not only dangerous, what happened was inexcusable.

We purchased a Martha Stewart glass patio table and had it for several years. One afternoon, I went to slide the table over in order to move it and the glass exploded into a million tiny shards. It fell onto the deck (sticking into the soft cedar wood) and below the deck. At first, I thought that I did something to cause this, but everyone that I told said that it was impossible for the glass to explode like that just by moving the table around a bit. I was researching customer reviews of new patio bar sets when I came across this site. I was amazed to hear that I am not the only one this has happened to. I would hope that Martha Stewart and company would do right by her customers and offer some type of compensation. Consequences: glass imbedded into wood deck, loss of table, and minor cuts from glass clean up.

My Martha Stewart glass top octagonal patio table exploded into a million pieces on my deck yesterday. It was a cool day and the table is protected under a canopy. I searched the internet and discovered that this is a common problem. It took quite a while to clean up all the glass and there's still glass scattered in the grass in between the boards on the deck. What a mess! If I'd known this table was unsafe, I would not have had it around. Shame on Martha Stewart and Kmart for not recalling a known defective product; I could have been injured. This is a giant accident waiting to happen! I now have a table and chairs with no glass top. I'm not going to give them any more business.

I purchased a Martha Stewart patio table and complete set from Kmart in Branson, MO in May 2001. Yesterday, while my husband, 90-year-old mother and I sat visiting around the dining table, it exploded into a thousand pieces right in front of our eyes. We were covered with glass and were in shock at what had happened. Fortunately, no one was injured. The entire set is and has been in a controlled, closed in balcony with heat and air, so the temperature was not an issue. We are all senior citizens so the unit was not misused. I went online to see if there were any other reports and was shocked again to see the number of complaints! I want my story added to the list.

I was standing about 2 feet from the table with infant daughter in my arms when table just basically exploded. Thank God I had a cover on it to contain the glass. It is quite obvious Martha Stewart and Kmart are aware of this dangerous situation and putting people at risk for serious injury!

I purchased the entire Martha Stewart outdoor furniture set several years ago, swing, loveseat, chairs, coffee table, umbrellas and tables with lazy Susans. Two years after I purchased this set, the glass on the leaf design coffee table shattered into a hundred pieces. The following year, the glass on the round table shattered. I still have all of my receipts and photographs to prove the damage. The damage was not due to abuse by the owner. A defect in the product is obviously the cause. It is just unfortunate when you spend a lot of money on a product, take good care of it, and it is no longer usable due to a defect that apparently the manufacturer and distributor knew about.

I purchased two Martha Stewart outdoor furniture sets there within a 4-year period. Both glasstop tables shattered. I never put two and two together until I saw something on television last night about the exploding Martha Stewart tables. Then I went online and found this huge site about all the complaints with the tables. I am so angry because the first table that shattered spewed the glass onto my driveway and all over the hood of my SUV. It was all scratched. I had to pay to have the hood repainted because it was a leased Mercedes vehicle. I no longer have receipts or anything, but I just wanted to let my complaints be heard as well. Thank you.

I purchased Martha Stewart's Augusta set of six chairs, two tables and umbrella for $586.11 on 6/28/03. In the summer of 2006, my grandson went outside and discovered the table had shattered in millions of pieces. It took months to get all the pieces picked up. There should be some compensation for this gross negligence in manufacturing.

I purchased a Martha Stewart patio set with a glass top table from Kmart. It was purchased in the spring of 2005. It was assembled by Kmart for a fee. The set included the table, 6 chairs and an umbrella. We also purchased a matching bar with 4 stools. All of this was assembled by Kmart. We enjoyed our table for all of a year, when one morning I looked out on my deck only to find that the table had shattered into a million tiny pieces. Luckily, there were no major injuries, only small cuts from spending numerous hours cleaning it up. I now have a table frame with no glass, 6 chairs and the worry that the bar will also shatter without any warning. Please think twice before buying any Martha Stewart patio sets since neither she nor Kmart stand behind their products.

I just saw a story on the news about Martha Stewart and outdoor table tops that shattered. Ours did too, for no reason. It was neither too hot nor cold and no one was around - nothing fell on it. It just shattered all over (and below) our raised deck, putting our family and pets in danger. The glass was cleaned off the deck, but remains underneath as it is difficult to get to it completely. The glass still remains under the deck where people and pets travel many times in the summer, without shoes.

We purchased a glass table patio set from Kmart made by Martha Stewart. For no reason at all, the glass table top exploded into a million pieces. It sounded like a gun went off! There was glass everywhere! Thank goodness no one was sitting at the table when it exploded, especially our children. I had no idea why this happened but went out again to Kmart in search of a matching table for our six chairs. I bought another one at Kmart and after now reading these complaints and hearing a story on the news, I am concerned about the table exploding again! Consequences: a lot of time, energy, and money sunk into a poorly manufactured product which could potentially cause serious injuries.

It was a complete set and now seems like a complete rip off.

It appears that I am one of the many who purchased a Martha Stewart exploding outdoor table from Kmart (Victoria). Mine exploded in December of 2007 and I assumed it was a manufacturing flaw in the glass. I contacted Kmart and the only thing they said they could do for me was sell me a matching table for the set, which I reluctantly purchased (not realizing that this issue was prevalent among the line and assuming that Martha Stewart was a quality name. I had no reason to think this was anything except an isolated freak occurrence.
