I have a checking account full of money to send, a great credit score. I set up my account with all of the valid information MoneyGram requested. Upon trying wire money for the first time, I received a error code saying it "could not be completed at this time". I contacted customer support. All they could say is "we are sorry, but we cannot complete your transaction. You will need to find another company to wire money." When I asked them for an explanation they said, "For security reasons." They could not provide any other information. :( Man. I'm trying to get money to an orphanage in Kenya. The children are suffering with pneumonia. This is very frustrating in a very personal way.

I tried to send money to a friend in Spain this evening, and the cashier advised me it was rejected! She this has only had this happened once before. She gave me a receipt and paperwork and I left. When I got home I looked at the receipt, and it shows that I received the cash back, since I used a debit card! I assumed that since the transaction was voided, I wasn't charged. I checked my bank statement, and the charge was there, and no pending credit! I drove back to Wal-mart, asked to speak to a manager, and after 1 and a half hours, and talking to several different management personnel, I got my money back. They had to verify my story by observing the security footage.

This same individual flagged my account in the past, because she thought it was suspicious, preventing me from sending money, and spent most of her time questioning my motives and making assumptions. I believe she voided it on purpose to prevent the transaction, this has to be the worst experience in my entire life. The management staff were very apologetic, but I believe it is personnel like herself that makes judgment calls, and it is none of her concern. Now my family member does have enough money to fly home, and I cannot get it to them. Thank you so much MoneyGram by judging my motives, my family member cannot get home.

I sent money to my son in Lubbock Texas, it was a horrible experience. They have listed many locations there in Lubbock but none of them are actually working. He drove from place to place trying to find one active location. Finally he found one, got a money order, not cash and then he had to go to another location to cash it. On top of that he paid to cash the money order on top of the payment I made here in Dallas to send the money. Please do not use MoneyGram to send money.

I completed two transactions on MoneyGram this morning. I live in Mexico, but my bank accounts are in the US. I use Western Union regularly with no problems, but the fees are a bit more expensive. So, I thought I'd give Moneygram a try to save a few bucks. I sent the first transfer to my landlord for rent. It seemed to go through. I was charged and received a reference number. He received a confirmation email. A few minutes later I sent a transfer to myself. I had to upload a picture of my passport. No big deal. I did. The transaction was placed under review, then cleared. Again, money taken from my account. Then about 10 minutes later, I received two emails, saying both transfers were cancelled. I called to find out why. None of the agents were capable of telling me anything that wasn't in their script. The escalation manager was no better.

So, I'm here now with unpaid rent and $2000 pending in my checking account. My rent is late and the deposit on my new place wasn't made. I likely lost it. All MoneyGram can do is repeat the same things, none of which are helpful. How difficult would it be to not take money out of an account unless the transfer has cleared the fraud department? I've had a few Western Unions here and there cancel, but I am never charged FIRST. The staff is clueless, the system makes no sense, and the few dollars I would have saved, not worth it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING MONEYGRAM FOR ANY ONLINE TRANSFERS. And, after the nightmare of 3 managers, 10 transfers, and unhelpful Facebook message, coupled with the fact I have no money, I wouldn't use them again if someone paid me to.

I purchased a money order from this company and it didn't reach the intended person. When I called them to check on the status, they said it was cashed but wouldn't tell me when it was cashed or by whom. They said they could send a copy of the cashed money order within 60 days for $18.00 or I could pay $26.00 to have an expedited copy sent within 2 days. They said if it was stolen, I would have to file a police report to sue the person to who stole it to try to get the money back! Do not waste your time or money with MoneyGram - Just send cash and get it insured!!!

UNSATISFACTORY - I created an online account and tried to complete a transaction. The online account also asks for a copy of the front and back of your driver's license, if that isn't enough information. I was denied. I called the number and she said I could either go to Wal-Mart or answer additional security questions...like where I previously lived and in what state did I have my social security card issued. Very invasive but I did it. Lady representative said to retry and it would go through. Tried again, same info, denied again.

Called and the gentleman said I needed to contact my bank, and I know nothing was wrong on that end other than I tried twice to process, or I could go to Wal-Mart. So I tried another card...denied again. Not only did they have a copy of my DL but also CC information and SS information...very suspicious activity. Oh, and Wal-Mart has a good scam, deny the senders so you have to go into their shop. Why have an online service if you are going to deny people who have given more information online than they would in person. THIS IS A JOKE OR SCAM.

Imagine my surprise when my bank account showed they took out the money even though they denied the transaction. Now I have to apply for a refund. I tried to send $2600 to TN and it took me 8 hours of their drama ** questions (after they already took my money) to find out they would not release my money to the recipient for NO REASON!! It was a mechanic who had just finished work on my 18-wheeler and my truck driver was there with the mechanic needing to pay the man but because I had not personally ever seen the mechanic face to face Moneygram refused to pay him. They take your money give you a reference number like everything is perfectly done and then IT ALL GOES DOWNHILL from that moment! I forgot to check reviews BEFORE I used them... LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY! DON'T waste your time people. I somehow managed to get my money back but so many others have not been so lucky.

Opened an account to send money and everything went well except for the unusually lengthy Processing status time. Two hours later I tried to log in to check the transaction status and was denied a login due to some unspecified error. I called the number on the error page and was told that I needed to make the transaction in person but was given no reason why. To this day I still can't fathom why my account was rejected. My debit card was in good standing and there was more than enough money in my bank account to cover the transaction.

I am highly disappointed with MoneyGram. I was waiting on an important money transfer. The money was sent but every time I went to pick it up I was told to call a number. I called and all they would tell me is that the senders needed to call, which they did 3 times being each time assured that the funds were now available, but every time I went back the funds could not be released to me. Their customer service is at best unhelpful at worst rude. It pains me to write such review since I have been using MoneyGram for some time before that. Up to that point I never really had any problem that would lead me to call customer service. My present experience with their customer service line (located God knows where) has been enough to resolutely send me to Western Union and PayPal for all my future need.

Since our conversation was going nowhere I even ask them to speak to a supervisor to which they responded that this was not an issue that a supervisor could help me with. I asked for an actual number in the USA or even the corporate office number, and they flat out refused. I have never written a review on a company whatsoever. NEVER. When disappointed with a company I usually simply tell the people around me (family and friends) but that's it. I am so pissed and disappointed at this company that I have to write something. I do not recommend using MoneyGram. If you are disappointed with this company please pass the word.

So, I provided that information to my payee. They went to collect it and were unable to. Then I get an e-mail saying the funds were cancelled for some odd reason. No explanation. This e-mail was sent to me: "Your transaction has been cancelled and will no longer be processed. We will refund the account you used to pay for your transaction. Refunds to a bank account typically take 10 business days, but may take longer due to bank holidays, processing times, and local laws and regulations. Refunds to a credit or debit card typically take 3–10 business days. If you have questions or concerns about why your transaction was cancelled, please call us at 1-800-922-7146, or contact us online." - I called and wrote. No response as to why.

It has now been 16 days. The only e-mail I get back asking them why or why so long the wait to receive my funds is this: "Thank you for contacting MoneyGram. We appreciate the opportunity to address any questions or concerns you may have. Your funds will be credited to your original payment source. Please be informed that you will receive your funds in 12 business days, once your refund is processed by our settlements department. We look forward to assisting you in the future, and appreciate your interest in MoneyGram.” I've written them twice and only get this stupid copied response. Horrible customer service. I can send it to whoever I want to), are you going to transfer $ in the future (duhhh do you want business? What is this service for? I don't think I want to after this situation).

At the end I asked for my confirmation # he didn't want to provided "for security" reasons when I already answer all my personal info. He even asked me if he can help me with something else. I sent money to family online. It says it should be available in minutes. Fast forward about 30 minutes later and it's still showing it is processing. So, I call the number to speak to someone. They ask me to verify my information (of course repeating nothing back to make sure what they enter is correct) and then tell me that they could not verify my information so I would have to go into a MoneyGram place and send the money that way because it was denied. I ask to speak to someone else and he transfers me to some lady who tells me that MoneyGram security denied it but she can't even look at it to see anything else besides to know that I have to go into a MoneyGram center to send money.

Because now, due to the incorrect information the guy entered I was locked out of my account and couldn't send money online anymore. I was pretty upset and explained to the lady how I am epileptic and cannot drive so I needed to send it from home and she kept saying she is sorry but there is nothing they can do. They can't even get a hold of MoneyGram security. So they couldn't give me the information for them that I requested.

Anyway, after a screaming match with the lady (on my end.) She finally tells me that she can verify me if I answer all these questions. She asks them. I answer. Then she sends it to the MoneyGram security and what do you know... my account was unlocked and I could resend the money. After sending it the second time and it still processing for a while I reluctantly called back and talked to a woman this time who told me it would take up to 2 hours due to lots of people using MoneyGram. Thank you! That was all I needed to know! Now I am aware that it is not an issue with the site... just a typical wait. It's been an hour and a half since the second time I am trying to send so let's hope it actually does go through this time! I really do not want to have to call them again.

Most of us use a money transfer company because someone needs the money quickly. I was asked 10 or more questions about the recipient. Still the money could not be sent. This is the second time I have attempted to send money through MoneyGram. Same results. The transaction was made through a large local supermarket chain. He did call MoneyGram and they told him to split the money which he did. I went the second time to pick it up and I was told the same story again. I called Moneygram and they told to call the sender again, wtf. He changed to Western Union and I just received the money. And the customer service, omg I wished I could spit on them through the phone, total **. Don't try MoneyGram, is a stupid entity.

Was camping across multiple states and broke down in Ohio. Had my brother in law send us $1200 for repairs etc. Of my own money and was faced with 4hrs of back and forth phone calls with customer service including a supv. (Call center is in India... yes the country.) They kept saying they needed to speak with the sender and put a hold on the money. After the sender called them 2x for the same "questions or interrogations", followed by their, rude and "I can't tell you any information” as to why my money was being held... I was then told by the sender my brother in law the money was not being sent and he was to go pick it up at CVS where he sent it from. Upon his arrival, they gave him a $1199.93 (they kept $.07 for processing) money order which he could do nothing with as banks were closed.

Now we are stuck an additional night in the middle of nowhere having to problem solve what seemed to be plan C or even D at this point. When we returned home my husband went to the local CVS and told that the Ohio area is a high risk area for illegal drug trafficking. Really... So I am left stranded with an RV in the middle of nowhere requesting my own money be sent to me and you waste not only 4 hrs of my time, but my brother’s time at work, gas to and from CVS and Walmart where we went to pick up the wire in Ohio. Because of some assumption, by some foreigner in India telling me about what is happening in Ohio and upstate/Northern New York, USA.

This is unacceptable and you should be reported to every known BBB OR business review as unfavorable and poor. Per your website, electronic funds can be sent for more than double of what was sent both domestic and international, And to make it worst, I was transferred to a call center across the world to speak with someone I could not understand, was rude and clearly did not care about me and my troubles in the good 'Ole USA! PS, Walmart customer service was no better... shame on you too!

WARNING!!! MoneyGram will REFUSE to release your CASH if you do not reveal ALL OF YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION TO THEM. You will be blacklisted by MoneyGram for not telling them exactly how and why money is withdrawn from your bank! They also will ask what your relatives use your money for!!! I have sent money to Asia for 30 years and yesterday my cash was blocked by MoneyGram. I called them to asked why and a woman started asking me questions about where my money came from and who I was sending it to and what they were using it for. I said it was none her business. She said "the MoneyGram reserves the right to review all transactions..." So I thought I would cooperate with her. What could go wrong??? BIG MISTAKE.

First questions I expected were to prevent fraud, like who are you sending the money to and where do they live... Then she asked how I know this person, I said he was a family member and she asked when I saw him last. I said "why are you asking me this?" She asked "what is he using the money for... is it a loan or gift?" I said "this is none of your business, just release the cash to him." She then went down the list of all the names of people I sent cash to over the last 20 years and wanted to know where I got the money, who employs me, what my relatives do with the money I send them. First I said I was uncomfortable with giving her all that information but I GAVE HER MORE INFORMATION THAN I SHOULD.

She then asked dozens of more extremely personal questions of who, what, when and why about me and my relatives. I said "are you ** crazy... WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME THESE QUESTIONS?? WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE INFORMATION?? Is this a HOMELAND SECURITY ISSUE?" I was infuriated and could not stop yelling at her but she kept cool and said "Just a few more questions." I said okay "I want to see where this is going." She continued to ask me about my bank accounts, how I live, who I know, what my money was used for, how money was earned, who is on my bank accounts and how money is withdrawn...

I finally said stop asking me anymore questions. And asked if MONEYGRAM is going to release the funds or not... She said based in my not providing how money was withdrawn for my account MONEYGRAM REFUSES TO RELEASE MY CASH TO MY RELATIVE and I will be refunded the amount sent. Any company can refuse service and so can you refuse to use them.

Emailed twice and later told they may take up to 90 days to respond. Call centre issued credits have all been blocked at the agents terminal twice over now. I mostly use the MoneyGram online. 9/10 times I use the online service the transaction is denied and I end up having to call the customer service and jump through hoops to send the cash... small amounts to my little brother for a pizza or gas money... 40-100$ each time. My husband takes our car to work so the online option is extremely convenient... or should be. When making my latest transaction I was expecting the delay... expecting to have to call customer service etc. But when I did I was told that MoneyGram security has banned me from using the online service and to my inconvenience I must send money via a store.

I asked for an explanation and was told, "Sorry ma'am but we are not given any more information than that" To which I asked whom I might get in contact with to straighten out the issue. No one. There is no way to resolve this issue or find out why it exists. But "you can still pay us your hard earned money as a customer at our in store location." I just want to say that I have also used Western Union's online and NEVER had an issue. Just a bit more expensive to send through WU but starting to see... even in this industry you get what you pay for!

This month I was treated like a criminal and was interrogated for one hour as well getting disconnected. The questions they asked were understandable but when it got to the point they kept putting me on hold and continuing to dig and dig as well begin to give me advice on other ways to send money and why I wasn't using them. Also, asking me if there was a welfare system in India to help the people. It was embarrassing and frustrating, to say the least. She would not stop asking questions and she was going to need to repeat the process for each transaction.

Finally, I realized no matter how many answers I gave, the money would not be released. This was after over one hour on the phone and being disconnected. And this was the 3rd time I had to answer the questions. The person who I was speaking to may have disconnected on purpose in order to not have to complete the call and knew I would have to call back in for help. Now I need to wait 3-10 business days for a refund. They should have just declined the transactions, to begin with -- instead, the system coded them as "READY FOR PICKUP." They thanked me for being a MoneyGram customer - I wanted to tell them I was no longer a customer but it wasn't worth wasting anymore or my breath or time.

MoneyGram can decide to reject money transfers by surprise for no good reason. In such a case I complained by telephone to the staff of MoneyGram. They had absolutely no explanation to offer but only that they have to obey rules. Here is what they wrote in a concluding email (sounds like an automatic text): "MoneyGram, as a heavily regulated money service business company, has an obligation to obey many internal and international regulations. As a result, each transaction is subject to review. MoneyGram decided to return this transaction to the you. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused you."

In no way do they disclose what rules and what criteria apply. It is pure arbitrarity some sort of playing God. In the above case I had sent about 800 USD for a travel, so for us users considerable losses were incurred (because flights could not be booked, etc.) and massive efforts were necessary for getting organized in other ways. In any normal opinion this ought to be compensated, but MoneyGram rejects all responsibility. Like kids playing God. About three months later I sent some money (about 80 USD) to a friend in need, again through MoneyGram, and things went well. A month later I sent some (about 100 USD) to a friend of the previous person, and the transfer was again returned to me by surprise.

It is like some sort of roulette. I never had anything to do with money laundering or criminal connections, so MoneyGram's denials or suspicions can only come from sick fantasies. Since there is absolutely no clue as what the reason is for this bizarre behavior, MoneyGram forces its customers to never use MoneyGram anymore. Fortunately there are now many other transfer services. MoneyGram is a mediocre service anyway. Not much better than Western Union with its lousy exchange rates and high fees, but which is at least readily available, while MoneyGram agencies are very sparse.

I really do not want to provide my SPI data to a company for purposes of financial transaction if they are "uncomfortable" performing a business need or transaction. MoneyGram have, for years, disrespected our money laundering laws in the Republic of Ireland and the EU. Simply anyone could, up until last Friday, walk in and send any amount below 1000 euros under any name to anybody in the world including terrorists I would imagine (and let's not forget two of the three London Bridge attackers used Ireland as their base to avoid terrorist detection intelligence services). Now, since Monday, those of us who are their loyal customers have been asked by MoneyGram to, at last, comply with the basic requirements (show passport) after years of easy access. However, in an attempt to appear to be "doing something" many of us have been thrown to the dogs, and at huge inconvenience, our transactions canceled as Moneygram rapidly attempts to rack up a few statistics to look good to law enforcement. No explanations are given, just a "MoneyGram does not feel comfortable processing this transaction".

Then they hang up. If you phone back, ask for Arthur in the Indian call centre and Arthur, if pressed will advise you to send to another member of your receiver's family (Top class security there MoneyGram!!!). What a bunch of idiots. The EU needs to revoke their license to trade. We need proper protection against fraud, money laundering and terror funding, not this money mad haphazard sham MoneyGram is attempting to pull off to placate the authorities. So MoneyGgram... If a terrorist wanted to send or receive funds in Ireland and you "detected this" should they get onto Arthur in your call centre and ask if it's ok to send to another person's name? What a sham!

At this time you would file with the Minnesota BBB office. They will send you a case #. When I emailed MG I had my evidence, check # and fact it had been cashed and the date. I never expected to get my money back. I was stunned today to see it was refunded to my account. I will never use them again. The customer service being international does not care one bit about their customers... The last time I called them the girl did not put me on hold and I could hear them laughing. All I could do was hang up never to call them again. I think if enough people complain to the BBB there might be some action. I was told at one point that they had their main office in Dallas. Be sure you know where there main office is. I think they hide if at all possible. Good luck.

Wake up in the morning to find out they had cancelled the transaction. No reason given. At 3 pm, and after calling their 800 number 2 times and going to a MoneyGram at Walmart, I find out that my online account with them had been closed and I needed to make another account with them, no other explanation given... My $300? They still have it and now I have to wait 3-10 business days to have it back in my account. Goodbye MoneyGram. Never again.

That meant, making sure all bills etc getting paid. Therefore, if I didn't send money, my mum would end up homeless. Quite recently I tried to send money to her as usual using MoneyGram. I tried several times to log into my account and couldn't. However, this a message would pop up to call a number which I did. I waited for over 20 minutes before someone finally answered. I told the individual what had happened, he checked my details, then he said there is something else I just want to checked, I waited for about 5 minutes.

When he came back he tells me that I can no longer use MoneyGram online! I asked him why, he tells me the most stupid excuse I have ever heard... He says because he could not find my details. I said to him, "but I have an account and you had told me that everything was okay. What's going on?" He says I was not allowed to use their service online indefinitely! I was livid as you can imagine! They had closed my account without having the decency to tell me about. They had all my details. They could have phoned, or emailed me. They have the most pathetic customer care and I am glad I didn't send any money with that stupid company. As a matter of fact I am telling anyone I know, never to use MONEYGRAM. My mother sent me money using MoneyGram as I'm traveling this weekend. We have been using this service for the past year, and it has been sufficient to our needs. This time, however, new regulations were put days ago for any transaction over 800 GBP whereas the receiver has to upload an ID copy online - but only after going to the MoneyGram agent, which is quite inconvenient but bearable. I thought to myself that it must be just an extra precaution that shouldn't hinder my business with them. I tried uploading a copy of my passport, and waited two days for confirmation but there was nothing. After another try, I was sent a text message saying that they needed additional information and that I should call them. I did, only to be told to retry the submission.

After a full 3 hour phone call with customer service yesterday, the only solution they came up with was to ask the sender to refund and resend the money to make sure the details were entered correctly. I went along with this, got the transaction refunded and resent as per their instructions. I go again this morning to receive the money, but lo and behold, same thing happened again.

I called customer service, explained the situation and what has been done to attempt to fix it, only to be put on hold for 40 minutes straight and be told that there was nothing more they could do. I respectfully laid out the problem and asked to be put through to a supervisor, when I was told that no supervisor will be put through, was 'thanked' for my call, and was told to "go use another service". As I was replying, I was hung up on very rudely. Needless to say, I will never be using this service again and I recommend that decision to everyone considering to use MoneyGram now or in the future.

Once informed I called and after extensive wait times and all the information consistent they told me I has to go get a refund. I went and to get the money back was another hassle.

I went into the same store I wired from. I had to call and get transferred to some agents who barely could communicate well with lengthy wait times and then was issued a new tracking number pick up my money as refund. I was glad but the transaction could not be completed and had to re-verify. I got my money after a few hours and made the mistake to resend to another person, thinking the recipient was the issue. The new recipient told me the transaction is only good for a refund. I have to go now and deal will these people and hopefully get my money back. I was advised to call a number that he was supplied with, which I did. The gentleman on the line (Rey in Nicaragua) explained that they were trying to protect my interests and prevent me from losing my money. Here is where the fun started!!! Rey asked me for certain items of identification, which I supplied. Then he asked (1) what was the closest cross street to my address, (2) What was my relation to the recipient? (3) How old was the recipient? What was the money to be used for? (4) Why the odd amount? ($2800 - what odd about that?) (5) When was the last time I saw the recipient? (6) How did we communicate? (7) How often did we communicate?

There were several other inane questions before I was told that they could not approve the transaction. I requested to be transferred to a location where the agent spoke with less of an accent, preferably the USA. I was told that there was no one in the US to speak with, but I could be transferred to an agent in Poland. I have read some of the other reviews/complaints. They all sound fairly similar to my experience. You can bet that I will NEVER attempt another MoneyGram.

Don't know how the stealer was able to cash it but he/she did even with a non-common name written on it. Tried to get information from MoneyGram was a runaround. Between my sibling and I, we logged over 5 hours trying to get information from them. Walmart was helpful in getting information to my mother, but in the end it was MoneyGram issue. Trying to get refund from remaining MoneyGram, went through hurdles. Paid $18 and rushed fee according to MoneyGram. They told to call back 3-5 days. Ditto.

Customer service says they don't have any information but to have my mother call them for information. How is this different than me calling? I asked for customer rep supervisor, (Diego?) he got angry and says to call the same number back. I asked for a more direct line that my mother can call and she doesn't speak English, response is they will have translator. I asked how can they even verify that it's my mother standing next to me versus me calling in her behalf as I am supposed to be the receiver. Same response, call same number, they will get translator. If I can't even information on status only and your system doesn't showed anything, how will adding another hour of energy on this and having my mother calling make a difference? DO NOT SUPPORT MoneyGram by buying from them. This is a ripoff and runaround service. I'm willing to pay if I get any service out of it.

My husband transferred money to me via Moneygram at a Tennessee Walmart to be sent to me directly at a Walmart in Mason Ohio. Prior to the transaction, I spoke with a Walmart supervisor who assured me that there would be no issue receiving the dollar amount in question. My husband transferred the money, paid the MoneyGram transfer fee, and received a reference number. He was told by the Walmart employee that the money would be available to me within minutes.

When I walked into the Mason, Ohio Walmart with the reference number, name of sender, and all pertinent information requires, I was told by a Walmart representative that I would not be able to receive the money as Moneygram had placed a cap on the dollar amount that can be received at her store. After talking to her and two other managers at Walmart, it became quickly apparent to me that everyone has a different story and explanation as to why. According to her, she has seen this issue numerous times, and has tried to contact Moneygram for other customers with the exact same issue to no avail.

I then spoke to a manager who was apparently none the wiser that their store had a cap on funds that could be paid out. He tried to send me to a completely different company to retrieve the funds, but when I called that company along with CVS and every single company that provides a moneygram service within a 100 mile radius, I learned from every single place that Moneygram has placed a cap on the total amount one can receive. No one knows for certain what the cap is, however most agreed that it was less than $1000. When I contacted Moneygram, the manager there told me to have a nice day and hung up on me. Not to mention that he was an offshore representative with very poor English.

I called Moneygram back and spoke to another representative who apologized and said that she was sorry that the Walmart employee did not properly inform me that I would be unable to receive funds for the amount sent and that the employee should have asked us to send several moneygrams that were less than $1000 each so that there would be no issue with receiving the money. When my husband returned to the Walmart located in Tennessee to request a refund for the total amount paid including the Moneygram fee, Walmart refused to issue a refund for the total amount paid.

As of now, Walmart and Moneygram employees are blaming one another and washing their hands of the entire situation. Our money paid, which is thousands of dollars, is sitting somewhere in God knows where and everyone is refusing to provide a refund. We have incurred fees as a result of this huge mess and again, no one will take accountability and/or provide a solution. We will be contacting the police regarding this issue and reporting this scam to help others avoid this nightmare.

I've been a customer of MoneyGram for years with no problem, until today. Here's my story... I have been using MoneyGram to send money to a relative in the United States quite frequently. Never had an issue or problem. Then all of a sudden, I send a MoneyGram for $40 and no go. Was told the transaction was canceled and where issuing a refund. So I thought, maybe it was the card that I was using, since it was a new card. So I go to a MoneyGram location at a CVS. I figured, ok I'll just use cash to send.

So I picked up the little red phone and called it in. Had to go through and extensive verification process and proceed to counter. Gave the clerk my information I received on the phone. Paid the clerk and walked out of the location. I sent a text to the receiver, letting her know it was on the way. 10 minutes. I didn't even make it out of the parking lot when I got a call and was told that it wasn't ready. Waited a few minutes and tried again. Nothing. Called them up again, only to find out that they canceled that transaction. So now I'm pissed. When I asked the reason why. I was given a lame excuse about the transaction was reviewed and determined that they were not going to process it, nor did they give a legitimate reason as to why. I will never, ever use that damn service again and I will let my contacts on LinkedIn and Twitter to not use them EVER!!!

I have been a customer of Moneygram for about 12 months now and regularly send money using their service. I am a retired Financial Director and I have a rented apartment in Dominican Republic which I use for at least 6 months of the year as my vacation home. For the running costs of the apartment, I use Moneygram services both online and via an agent (normally via online services but at times should I be in the city and need to send money, I use a Moneygram agent).

As I have no family or relatives alive, I made a decision to support young Students with their university fees and needs and so do my effort to educate and uplift less fortunate people to give them a fair start to their lives. So I support 3 students in the Dominican Republic, and 2 in Colombia (I travel a lot and next to the Dominican Republic which is my favorite country, Colombia is my second choice). As a result, I regularly send small amounts of money monthly to these students to pay their university/college fees and other items they may need.

At the Beginning of May 2017, I had to send money to cover costs for my holiday apartment and a birthday gift for a very good friend in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on the same day. I used the Moneygram online services and received the Moneygram reference numbers which I forwarded to my recipients. They proceeded to the Moneygram paying agent and were informed that the reference numbers were "incomplete and not all the information had been received to make a payout".

I immediately contacted Moneygram online and lodged a fraud complaint thinking that the transactions had been hacked and misappropriated. I received a complaint reference number and after 3 days I received an email stating that the transactions had been cancelled and the money would be returned to me. The immediate question which came to my mind was "why - they received the funds so what the hell is going on" This email came from the Moneygram Service Center in Poland.

I called Moneygram in Europe and spoke to one of their service center clerks, who was very apologetic and told me to hold while she checked what had happened. After about 5 minutes she returned and sheepishly told me that Moneygram is a financial institution which must abide by financial and AML rules (Anti-Money Laundering) set for money transfers and that the company (Moneygram) did not want to do business with me. Well, I was shocked and replied "are you suggesting that I am a criminal or Money Launderer?" To which she replied "you are not the type of customer we want so you can never use our online service or our agents again. Goodbye."

After the call, I was basically frozen and sat in silence for 10 minutes. Not for one minute in my financial career (45 years) was my integrity ever questioned nor my correctness for abiding by the laws and rules ever doubted yet now some little employee of the Moneygram Security Audit Department (Resolutions Assurance Department as MG calls them) in Poland had within 5 minutes evaluated my integrity and law abidance qualities and decided that I was a Money Launderer/criminal and not the type of customer that Moneygram wants.

I WAS GUILTY and not given any chance of proving my innocence. One must ask oneself what happened to the legal principal that YOU ARE INNOCENT until proven guilty! Or is this the new norm that these Money Transfers companies are now establishing in the legal and business world. God help us if this norm is accepted in the criminal law faculty! Due to unforeseen costs the previous month April had more transfers than usual, but the amounts transferred were not Money Laundering amounts. In fact my average monthly amount transferred over the 12 months could never in 100 years suggest that I was "Money Laundering" but to the Resolution Assurance Delegate/Specialist, I was doing exactly this and therefore a criminal.

I must ask myself that if they were of this opinion and concerned about the increase in my April transfers would it not have been correct business procedure to send me an email asking for more information and reasons for this increase in my transfers. I would have willingly given them answer and reasons because I have nothing to hide and the transfers are made to the students I support, my friends who I know personally (birthday gifts etc.) and to the friend who oversees the expenses such as electricity, cable/internet and other maintenance costs associated with my rental apartment.

What I fear is that these delegates of these Resolution Assurance Departments are now assuming that they are bigger and stronger than the CIA/FBI agents and behaving as such, blindly applying the rules as set out in the Moneygram Latin America and Caribbean ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING COMPLIANCE GUIDELINES without investigating sufficiently and coming to a reasonable conclusion as to "GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY". At least with the CIA/FBI you are informed of your rights, why you are being arrested and given the opportunity to provide answers to the accusations. With Moneygram, you have zero chance of defending yourself against the unsupported suspicions of a Resolution Assurance Delegate.

Well, all I can add is "Thank you Moneygram Resolution Assurance Delegate " you have effectively ended the careers and future lives of 5 young University students in countries where life is not as easy and protected as your lives in Poland. So much for Moneygram's contribution to the globalization policy of uplifting and assisting less fortunate people in poorer countries. It is really time for these arrogant companies to be boycotted and made to answer for their stupid, insensitive decisions and disgusting customer service instead of hiding behind their AML rules and regulations.

The receiver was at a MoneyGram pick-up location to receive the funds with proper identification, the reference number, my information as the sender, the amount expected to be received, and the confirmation. The customer service rep behind the counter stated the funds weren't available for release, despite the receiver having all the required information they needed.

I immediately contacted customer service to see what the problem was. They stated the receiver would need to contact them for verification purposes in order to release the funds. I had to called MoneyGram several times because they provide me with two wrong phone numbers for the receiver to call. When contacted MoneyGram I was transfer to another service department, I told him I would like to cancel my transaction due to the hardship upon the receiver attempting to receive the funds. He stated I (the sender) could NOT cancel the transaction until the receiver answer some questions. I asked to speak with the supervisor and he replied he was him. So, I could not cancel a transaction I initiated.

From this point on, the receiver called 1-800-269 4556 and spoke with another person at MoneyGram who again, questioned him on his identification and then stated the funds are now available for release and pick-up. The receiver was at home when he contacted them, so how could they have truly identified him before releasing the funds, if that was the case they could have released the funds when he was at the store location and presented his ID to the cashier. The experience was horrible and I will never use this company again, their customer service is terrible.

Trying to send money online. Received email to call MoneyGram. Spokesperson started asking way too many personal question: birthdays of my whole family, why I am sending money, do I know the person to whom I am sending money, how did I meet them, what are they going to use the money for, what state did I get my SS. Finally hung up and called again. This time he started asking last 4 digits of SS and other questions. Put me on hold and never came back. Online transfer was declined. Went to Walmart, no personal questions and money sent (cheaper than online). Question if MoneyGram is doing this inquisition on purpose.

I sent money a couple times with no issue. Then I sent when my college attending son tried to get it they wouldn't. Even though I had reference number. It took me half hour and finally they released it. Tried again few days later. Wouldn't send and when I called they can't tell me why. Tried again couple days later. Got ref number, and again they wouldn't release it. I called. They asked me questions you'd think I was being interrogated BR, the CIA, like, "Where is money from?"

They cancelled transaction. Told me they'd refund. Of course 3 days later no refund. I call. I was transferred 6 TIMES. EACH TIME I had to start completely over. 3 hrs it took and finally told I could get it but had to go in person. Not to ask for refund bet to say I was a receiver. I don't mind the international call center but if you have one please understand what I'm saying so I don't have to spell every word. Never ever ever again. It is just too frustrating a company to attempt to talk to.

Last Saturday, I sent $2,000 to a friend. Actually, wanted to send more but maximum at MoneyGram is $2.000. It is $7.000 at Western Union. Wish I had known. When my friend went to pick it up he was told he could not have it. This is after he had numerous frustrating calls and long waits with MoneyGram. They said I should call to confirm the transaction is not fraudulent. My turn for long waits, disconnected three times and finally being told he can't have the money because there is too much fraud in that location.

I was transferred, after demanding it, to another department where I thought for a fleeting moment there was hope. I answered all the security questions correctly and then was told "too much fraud in that location" he can't have the money. It has been hours and he is still waiting there. Their ENTIRE SYSTEM WAS DOWN FOR HOURS. Customer service rep said come back in an hour, and then come back in an hour again. The CSRs speak very quickly and their English is hardly understandable. India, perhaps.

It is now Sunday - Now for the refund... MoneyGram assured me I could get my cash back plus the $40 fee and I decided to use Western Union (MUCH better company). I had to get cash because banks were closed on Sunday and I could not take out $2,000 from ATM. I went to the MoneyGram machine for the refund and got error messages. Again long waits of 7-10 min. on the phone. They would not do the refund because it was over $2000 because THEIR FEE put the total at $2,040.

I was about to give up on the fee because there was NO FLEXIBILITY by MoneyGram to process this transaction. I then found out that I could not get cash back and that eliminated the possibility of using Western Union that day. I would have gotten $500 cash, and $1500 money order and NO REFUND of fees. One rep suggested I go to 4 locations and get $500 from each. My friend was still waiting for the money in San Diego while I was in No CA. The weekend was wasted. NOTHING was accomplished.

I gave up and began the process on Monday - a wonderful store manager at CVS spent over an hour on the phone with MoneyGram only to be told come back tomorrow. I even said keep the $40 if that puts it over the limit. No doubt, tomorrow will produce the same frustrating result the last three days did. I feel sorry for the millions of people who have had to deal with MoneyGram. They still have my $2,040. LOTS OF FRUSTRATION, LOTS OF TIME LOST, LOTS OF INCONVENIENCE AND THE RESULT IS MONEYGRAM, STOLE $2,040 FROM ME.

I recently conducted an online money transfer through MoneyGram service in which the experience was deplorable to say the least. After completing my online transaction followed by multiple emails received from MoneyGram stating the funds were available for release to the receiver, the funds were not available for the receiver. I contacted 1-800-922-7146 for customer service, in which I identified myself after several questions asked. The receiver was at a MoneyGram pick-up location to receive the funds with proper identification, the reference number, my information as the sender, the amount expected to be received, and the email confirmation which clearly stated the funds were available for pick-up.The customer service rep behind the counter stated the funds weren't available for release, despite the receiver having all the required information they needed including the email confirmation & reference number.

I immediately contacted 1-800-922-7146 (MoneyGram) to see what the problem was. They stated the customer rep at the store pick-up location would need to contact their "designated phone line" for verification purposes. The customer rep at the store told the receiver they would need to contact MoneyGram in order to release the funds, so the receiver did that and they interrogated him and even asked for his social security number and his father's name. Mind you, this has nothing to do with verifying who the receiver was because the customer rep at the pick-up location would still need to identify who the receiver is in order to release the funds. So the receiver calling MoneyGram and getting interrogated was quite useless for identification purposes.

I then contacted 1-800-922-7146 (MoneyGram) and asked to speak with a supervisor because everyone else seemed incompetent in providing the necessary service and answers to their customer's concerns. The supervisor did not want to give me his first & last name but eventually gave me his first name and ID number. I told him I would like to cancel my transaction due to the hardship upon the receiver attempting to receive the funds which were available for release according to their emails and website confirmation. The supervisor stated I (the sender) could NOT cancel the transaction until the receiver answer some questions. "So let me get this straight, I (the sender) can not cancel a transaction I initiated?" The supervisor replied, "Yes that is correct."

So I replied, "What if the receiver was in a car accident or doesn't need the funds anymore, or that individual passed away and can no longer be available to conduct a pick-up of the funds?" The supervisor remained silent so his brain could perhaps process the questions I presented to him. The supervisor still stated the receiver would have to be present and the customer rep at the pick-up location would need to call their "designated line". So, as you can see he was also incompetent as well as the people who he may have trained. The level of customer service to the general public is at an all time low and people aren't taking their employment in these positions serious.

From this point on, the receiver called 1-800-922-7146 and spoke with another person at MoneyGram who again, questioned him on his identification and then stated the funds are now available for release and pick-up. The receiver was at home when he contacted them, meaning they wouldn't have known him from a person who may have stolen his identification, he was not at the store or in front of a customer rep at the pick-up location. So how could they have truly identified him before releasing the funds, if that was the case they could have released the funds when he was at the store location and presented his ID to the cashier. People, as you can see they don't even follow their own policy, nor have trained customer service employees with proper supervision.

I refuse to deal with MoneyGram services from this point on. A customer should not have to go through so many circles in order to conduct a transaction for "security" purposes. According to their policy all the receiver needs is proper ID, reference number, funds amount, and the sender's name. Another thing I noticed is that every time I called MoneyGram I spoke to numerous people of Middle Eastern decent based upon their voice. I'm not attempting to discriminate against them but this concerns me because it appears as if you are speaking with someone overseas who can't interpret what the hell you are saying to them.

Regardless, MoneyGram need to ensure their employees are receiving proper training and provide better service. What really bothered me the most is that a Sender could not have his/her transaction canceled upon their request. That's a form of deceit in itself that this company should address or at least make it clear on their website before people proceed in conducting any transactions. I intend to cancel my account with MoneyGram and I'm sure others will as well after reading multiple complaints about their services.

I sent MoneyGram a refund application for a $120.00 money order. While I was getting the application ready to mail, I was making copies of everything including a personal check for $18.00 which will cover the processing fee. I put it all in an envelope and went to the post office to mail it. When I came back home I noticed I left that $18.00 check on the copier and ran back to the post office to mail it to them in a separate envelope with all the information on it. I said: "I forgot this check on the copier. This is the payment for processing fee for my money order number **. Please send me a complete refund of my $120.00 and use this check for processing." When I got my refund, I got a check for $102.00 instead of $120.00 which meant they took the $18.00 from the total of my refund. Then I checked on my bank account and they also cashed my $18.00 check.

When I called them, they hanged up on me when I requested a supervisor. Then I called again, and it was the same agent but she acted as if she was somebody new on the phone. She did not want to get me a supervisor, and she said that they cashed my personal check of $18.00 because they decided to send me a copy of the refunded check and that cost $18.00. I told her I did not request a copy and that they should have just returned my personal check knowing that they already charged me. She said that was my fault for sending that payment and that after I cashed my refunded check, I cannot fight this. By the time they got my personal check, they have not even issued a refund, so the least they could have done was to return my personal check and not charge me twice the $18.00 processing fee.

I know we are not talking about millions here, but even if they took $1.00 or $1,000.00 the fact is that they are stealing our money. That is not right! MoneyGram, you are committing fraud by doing this to your customers, and even though I don't have the money to take you to court, someone else with the money and the time will. You can count on that! The reason I am writing this review is because on the MoneyGram website it says that if you make any payment, a reference number is generated. The receiver can only receive the money only if he/she provides the reference number at the MoneyGram pick up counter for cash pick. He/she also have to provide his/her Identification card. So, I made a payment in belief that my transaction will be safe. THIS IS ALL FALSE.

Apparently, you can just give the sender information, exact amount of the money transferred and you can get the reference number and pick up the money. There is nowhere on their website it says that you can do that. In fact and I quote from MoneyGram website - "The Reference number is assigned to a transaction when the money has been sent successfully. For cash pickup transactions, the receiver must have this number to pick up the money. If you sent the transaction, you can find this number in the Email address you may have received when you completed your transfer. If you are receiving the transaction, you will need to ask your sender for this number." This is total fraud and I HIGHLY DISCOURAGE ANYONE TO USE MONEYGRAM.

I have used your company to sent money to my parents in South Africa many times over the last few years, and have been very grateful for your service. I have recently become very concerned about a number of very odd interactions with your online website and your call center, which pose a very real security risk for your clients.

Let me explain. I send my parents money once a month, and not too long ago I started sending them money online, as it was far more convenient than going into a store. Yesterday I attempted to send money in the usual way and was locked out of my account online. I typed in the password EXACTLY. I did this THREE TIMES. I had the password written down, there is NO WAY it was being entered incorrectly. This was red flag number one.

I then tried to log in using the five digit temporary password that had been emailed me. It was rejected TWICE. Red flag number two. I was then locked out of my account. I then called the number that was emailed to me, in order to reopen my online account. The person who answered was VERY unclear. It was very difficult to understand anything he said. Surely this is VERY bad company policy? Why would you have someone man your customer care lines that cannot communicate clearly?? How illogical is that?

He then proceeded to ramble on incoherently about what, no one knows. I asked him to please come to the point so we could just get the problem solved (10 minutes into the call). He then asked me if I knew anything about and then he mentioned a few random street names? I answered a few times and then asked him how this could possibly help verify who I was? He then threw out some glib line of company policy, as if that would suddenly make all his idiotic questions make sense?

He then stated there was a problem with my SSN??? What? At that point I was really spooked. None of this made any sense, and I felt very unsafe as if I was being scammed. Red flag number THREE. I then asked to please speak to a supervisor or anyone who could explain the need for these highly irrelevant questions. He kept me on the line waiting for a time and then came back and said there was no supervisor. Really?? Red flag number FOUR.

Crazy stuff. Please review your call center as well as how you relate to your clients/customers. I would like to continue using your services but am very fearful that there are security breaches in your operation that perhaps you are not aware of. Or if this is truly necessary, perhaps employ call center operators that firstly speak coherent, and then have them better explain your procedures in order for your customers not to feel exploited and violated.

I went to the place that I purchased it then I was told they sell them but they don't refund nor exchange, and they suggest that I call MoneyGram, but I said to myself that does not make sense, as money order is considered cash, so I decided to go to my bank to cash out or deposit the money order, then my bank declines it as well. Now, I call MoneyGram. They asked me for the receipt order, which I gave them, and they confirm it was their product and it is valued for $200.00.

Now, the customer service rep started to interrogate me. He said for me to go to check cashing place and told them what I have explained they will acknowledge it. I said, "Why don't you accept to return me my fund directly." He said, "I am going to there let me finish explained." He said the next option is to send a claim card, but you will need to purchase it from a store. I said to myself what the hell is all this back and forth to receive my money back.

The only thing I could come up with is that Moneygram is a crook, and will steal your money and refuse to give you a refund even though you have explained yourself over and over. The form, the rep told me that I must purchase is also on their website, which I am sure why he wants me to go to a store to purchase, so I can return the money order. Now, I am stucked with $200.00 money order that I cannot use. It is so unfair. Why allow businesses from foreign countries to do business in our country, if they cannot be honest.

I provide a service to federal prisoners who are allowed to use TRUGRAM as a method of payment for my service, which is in conjunction with the company known as MoneyGram. An inmate, who generally has very little money, can pay $4.95 to have money transferred from his inmate trust account to people on the outside, and Moneygram will, apparently, happily accept that cash. But when the person on the outside tries to collect the money, Moneygram makes the person jump through hoops by answering personal and private information that is irrelevant to the transaction. When the inmate sends the money from the prison, an email is sent to the receiver listing the inmate's name, the receiver's name, the amount and their "reference number". So there is sufficient information that would keep anyone else from trying to collect the cash from that transaction.

But Moneygram seems to look for ways to deny the transaction, allowing them to hold onto the inmate's money for "up to 30 days", and then when they do finally refund the money to the inmate, they KEEP the $4.95 fee! They should not be entitled to their fee if they didn't perform the service! If I receive a personal email with the above information, I should be able to collect the money that the inmate sent to me without question, period. I have to provide a photo-ID, that should be sufficient for them in case there was any question as to whom the money was transferred. The Customer Service clerks at Walmart are a joke, too, but that's not the point of this complaint.

We went back to the Walmart store and requested they refund our money and the $30 "service fee".

The clerk called a number and after over 10 minutes of phone ringing she put us to talk on the phone with another person that sounded like she was in another country and continent... Pakistan, I believe. He asked all kinds of silly questions from us such as why we were sending the funds, who was the person we were sending the funds to, etc., etc. Finally, after 15 minutes of this nonsense, we got our money back and our so called "service fee" refunded... We will never again use MoneyGram and highly encourage anyone to avoid them.

I spent over an hour answering personal information in attempts to get a moneygram sent. Very personal info that is really none of their business. I went along with it for a while but it never ended and it was apparent to me they were phishing, data mining and I'm sure selling my info... It cost me 99.00 dollars and I never got the moneygram sent. I had to give up on it and then had to block them from accessing my credit card... There is something seriously wrong with Walmart and this moneygram BS... I went to FedEx, paid 23.00 and had my money sent overnight. Next day she had the money delivered to her house. These days you should never allow someone your DL number, last 4 digits of your ss # and then a long long list of your past residences and friends and family. That's just way too much info to be giving out about yourself...

I was shocked with my recent experience with MONEYGRAM. I am a working professional and saved up charity money to send to India. I had by mistake spelled the surname of the receiver wrong. This was a completely innocent mistake. I thought the matter was resolved, when I had it corrected and the charity would have received the donate of 300. The charity called me back to say the funds had been "blocked" and I was advised to called MoneyGram. I did call MoneyGram, and requested a refund, and was told "no funds will be refunded unless I sent personal information about myself and the receiver", and was interrogated, accused of fraud, the questions were very insulting, and incriminating beyond anything I had ever experienced in my life.

MoneyGram Agents were very insulting. They refused to accept that a mistake was made. They refused to listen to their own agent explain that I was the real sender and was entitled to the refund. I wrote 6 emails, and made over 5 hours of calls to MoneyGram spread out over 3 weeks. Unfortunately, I was left with no alternative but to supply sensitive information about me and the charity receiver and was told today by email that I will get my money back 5.3.17. I accept that MoneyGram have a duty to ensure that funds are sent and received by the correct people, but I feel humiliated and verbally raped, and held to ransom when requesting my money back.

Nobody in today's world and century deserves to go through such violation of civil rights/privacy by any company or person. Such unreasonable intrusion into my private affairs felt offensive, and insulting. Further MoneyGram tried to use my private information against me to create a false and incriminating situation which did not exist. I intend to write to their commissioner of complaints when MoneyGram finally discloses the correct information. My advice is DO NOT use MoneyGram. They are acting in a very unethical manner and have no regard for their customers.

They required me to call and answer a series of security questions that were increasingly invasive. They asked personal questions that no one should ask (or answer). When I complained about answering such personal questions they stated they would not release the money if I did not follow their procedures. The support was unable to help, suggesting only that I should use a different browser. I am using Chrome, which is 58% of the browser market. Next one is IE with 20%. So they have a bug somewhere and their technical support cannot diagnose the problem.

I could not find a delete account function. This is unacceptable really, but OK, I called them and they "removed" my account. I asked if all of my data is now deleted. They said yes. However, I still had a session open and could still go to a function where I see all of my credit cards. Thus, the data was not deleted. Also, I was told I could not create a new account with the email address I used before. When I asked why, they said it's because it's on the record. So how could it be on the record if they had deleted all of my data. There are certain rules of engagement when dealing with online users, especially if the service deals with sensitive information. WOW I NEVER would have imagined how many times this company has been SUED BY THE GOVERNMENT for ILLEGAL practices. Right up to JAN 2016 13 MILLION DOLLARS. Just Google it!!! UNBELIEVABLE, that this company is, still ALLOWED to do business in the USA!?! I wanted to purchase a phone from a lady. We agreed that it was too far to drive so she would overnight the phone me via Fedex and AFTER I received the phone I would THEN GIVE HER THE REF. NUMBER so she could go get the money. She was to send me the FedEx tracking info within a couple minutes of me doing the moneygram as she was at Fedex waiting.

I called MoneyGram on Jan 2, 2017 to confirm that UNTIL I GAVE HER the reference number that the money COULD NOT be picked up. They confirmed that was correct. I even ASKED them about A REFUND to ME if the transaction fell thru (and I did not receive my phone) to plan ahead and make sure I could get my money back from Money Gram. I also called Walmart PRIOR because that is where I was completing it and they also confirmed this and confirmed that the process of a refund was relatively simple if I needed to do that.

Long story short I realized within about 20 min of sending the MoneyGram that something wasn't right because I never heard from or could contact the person that I was buying the phone from. I called Walmart IMMEDIATELY as I was driving. They said that I had to be there in person I was back within about an hour to cancel it. They checked and it had already been cashed. I ask how is this possible they have NO INFORMATION. They were dumbfounded. Walmart call Moneygram. Then they put me on the phone with money gram. I told them that was IMPOSSIBLE since I never GAVE the recipient the ref number. They asked if the recipient had my name, address I had to have them ship my phone and the amount was obvious since it was their price.

Not to mention all of this is right on the MoneyGram that can be hacked if you know how (I was also informed that this may have been an inside deal since it happened so QUICKLY). They told me that if the recipient claims that they LOST the ref number and gives them my (SENDERS) name and amount that it was for MONEYGRAM takes it upon themselves to go ahead and release the ref number WITHOUT ANY CONTACT TO THE SENDER WHATSOEVER!! And that it was MY FAULT for giving them my info in the first place. I told them that all anyone needs is a name and general location and it takes a matter of seconds to go on the net and get ANYONE'S FULL ADDRESS they could have gotten it VERY easily even if I didn't give it out.

I am holding Moneygram FULLY responsible for my loss of the 400 due to their negligence, deception, unauthorized distribution of private information (You're telling me that if I have someone's name, address, account number that I can walk into their bank and say I'm here to pick up 400 for them and they would just say "OK? I DON'T THINK SO"). They should in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM NEVER be allowed to give out the sender's information. ESPECIALLY with the way scams are these days. Hence that is WHY there is a ref number that the SENDER has to provide to the RECIPIENT in order for them to get the money. If it is lost (THE RECIPIENT) should HAVE TO CONTACT the SENDER and the SENDER should be given it again. I was told that this was a SECURE way to do this and that the money COULD NOT be accessed WITHOUT the ref number.

If I would have EVER been informed in ANY WAY shape or form that this was not the case and that they leak UNAUTHORIZED information I NEVER would have even considered this. There is NOWHERE on the paperwork that I received that indicated ANYTHING different than what I was told or any reference to anything THAT MAY BE DIFFERENT than what I was told. It is ludicrous that a company thinks that they even have a legal right to do what they did. They are a very shady, irresponsible, deceptive company and need to be held accountable for their lack of security and fraudulent actions that cost me a lot of money time and hassle this happen. I feel that it isn't as much about the scam as THE FACT that Moneygram ALLOWED/ACTUALLY MADE this happen.

Also on a SNEAKY note as I'm sure you all have realized, they outsource their calls to a OVERSEAS CALL CENTER with people that are VERY hard to understand. Walmart and I both had to ask, them to repeat what THEY said NUMEROUS TIMES, because they are SO HARD to understand. I FIRMLY BELIEVE that they do this on purpose to avoid your ability to COMPLETELY understand what they say AND OR HOPE you get disgusted and just hang up on them which is what I was forced to do.

Yet she was denied with no explanation offered. When I called MoneyGram here, the agent started asking me questions like what was the relation between me and the receiver and what was my reason for sending the money. I was trying to understand what triggered this security check by MoneyGram so that next time I know what to expect but customer service didn't seem to understand my questions or be able to provide any specific answers. They just kept calling me "ma'am" and repeating it was for security reasons. And by the way, customer service is a third party not MoneyGram who just wasted my time. I was told that the receiving party could not access my money unless they had the reference number. THOUGHT my money would be safe then. I went through with the transaction. Got an email a bit later telling me my money had been received. Called customer service to let them know I hadn't given out my reference number. (The receiver "can't" receive money unless they provide the reference code.) I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD ACCESS MY MONEY WITHOUT THE REFERENCE CODE IF THEY HAD "RELATIVE" INFORMATION.

I talked to 3 supervisors, they kept blowing me off, and eventually was told that "people have their ways of finding out reference numbers". (Like really?) So since they had already picked up my money, MoneyGram wouldn't refund anything, and I was told by the head honcho that I won't see anything from MoneyGram, ever. Why does this matter? Because MoneyGram acts like it a secure transaction, but in reality, it's pretty dang easy to get taken advantage of through MoneyGram. Complete scam. Worthless company only out to scam people. Oh and have fun talking to all the "English speakers" on the phone. You literally aren't going anywhere with these people.

I went to the machine as normal only to be told I have the wrong details, so contacted my parents who contacted MoneyGram and ta da all sorted. Went the next day to be told again wrong details! Have now spoken with 4 different people whom I am finding very difficult to understand, saying there is nothing they can do and keep apologizing grrrrrrrrr! It's a fault at the sender's end apparently to which my parents (the senders) are told it's all been sorted. 1 week later and I still have no money to give my daughter. I do not recommend this service and will use my bank in future. Never mind the transaction fee.

My transactions are always denied until I call a toll free number in South America and reach someone I can barely understand who asks me all sorts of personal questions such as: Age, DOB, Address, e-mail, Phone number, are you married? How long have you been married? How did you meet your wife? Why are you sending her money? How long have you known her? etc...(most of which is none of their business!) then they decline my transfer. When I ask to speak to a supervisor or manager they laugh and say that there is none there for me to speak to. UNBELIEVABLE! Do yourselves a favor and just use TransferWise, it is much cheaper and your receiver will get a much better exchange rate on the other end. SCREW MONEYGRAM! Ripoff cheesy company at best!!

My instructions were simple enough: take $400 dollars for myself, spend $50 within the store, use two MoneyGrams totaling $50 then to send two money transfers each for $1,700 and send them to Larnaca, Larnaca In the country Cyprus. Well I had never heard of this place before in my life. I had looked up the bank, and it existed but I couldn't verified anything beyond that point. And they could only refund it for 3-10 business days! I had to travel all the way to the exchange and to my dismay it was cancelled!

My husband called their customer hotline and nobody can give us an explanation why!!! All they said was freaking SORRY!! And no reason!! He called again the hotline and he was passed on to different people!! How stupid is that?! First off! If they have any problem with sending the money, they shouldn't accept the transaction from the start and not deduct the money from our account and leave it for refund for frigging business days! That money was supposed to be for a payment scheduled today to the bank and now we have to suffer Moneygram's disastrous service!!! Very Very disappointing!! I have been a MoneyGram customer for quite a while. Have sent money as recently as August 12 '16. I signed in today to send money to the only person I ever send to. Made it to the process payment page, entered the amount and my card number. Got a message that they can not process my payment to call. So I called in and am told that I have been blocked and can no longer send online that I have to go into a location. I ask why and I am told that "it was a security business decision and they don't have to tell me anything." Now they did block me but still processed my card taking 1.00 stating that they do it to make sure the card is real, when this is the same card I used last time. Why are they allowed to take my money but I can not send any???

To every question I ask the response is "It's a security decision and they don't have to tell me why" and I can't even call the security department because they won't tell me anything either. This makes absolutely no sense to me at all. They can make decisions about me and don't have to tell me anything. What makes it worse is those damn security questions verifying who I am. They ask according to your drivers license, "How tall are you?" I read MY license and choose accordingly, just to be told I am wrong. Seriously WTF!!! Then I am told they have a different email address for me then what I gave. Telling me my email is not right and can not tell me what they have for security purposes.

I JUST received an email from them with my proof of transaction and another when the money was picked up. So please explain again how I am wrong??? They asked me if I know a specific person, I said, "Yes that's who's card I used to make the payment." I was told that the sender and the card info has to match, different info is not allowed. Which still doesn't make sense because that's how I always send and have never been told a thing. I think it should be MONEYGRAMS responsibility to stop the transaction if it doesn't match. That way it can be changed. They complain about it now but have had no problem collecting all those fees off of the card when I send money!!! I called customer service and told them to remove all of my information from their system that I would never do business with them again.

A BIG RIP OFF!!! Folks, I don't have time for this but thought I would share my experience to save you some trouble! I needed a couple of blank money orders from my bank. My bank happen to be out of money orders and suggest I go to Walmart across the street to purchase them. The teller also said "and it's only .70 cents each, compared to the bank's $4.00 each. Wow, that's awesome, right? Wait until I find out it was so (WRONG).

Anyway, I went across the street to Walmart and purchased 2 "MoneyGram" money orders. To make a long story short, I ended up not needing the money orders. So, I took both blank money orders, the stubs, and my id back to Walmart the next day to get my money back... Are you ready for this?? The cashier took the money orders and attempted to cash them for me. She ran the first one through their register system thing as if she was cashing a check. It got declined and printed a receipt with a reason code 2. The cashier then told me that it won't allow her to cash it, so I need to call "synergy customer service" (that's the check system company MoneyGram goes through).

Ok. So, I called synergy customer service, who then had the nerves to tell me that (Just because I purchased the money orders at the same location of cashing, doesn't guarantee they will cash it. WTH??!!) The cashier said synergy goes by risk factors and because I've never cashed a check through them makes me a high risk to cash the money order that I used cash to purchase. What kind of rule is that?? Yes, you can walk into Walmart, purchase some funky MoneyGram money orders, but you can't return them. And, they get to keep the money you paid to purchase the moneyOrder! Get the hell out of here!! You get rich while we get screwed! Never Again!

During my interrogation, I apparently gave the wrong email address and the trap door opened under me. They claimed I had used a different email a few years ago when I used the service for the only time ever -- and had even forgotten -- and so, for replacing a spam account with a newer email account, I was banished to the dark universe of the unacceptables.

I called back many times, each time hoping for a clear speaker of English, each time hoping for some reason. No. Each claimed that there WAS no grievance process in existence, that once decided, the decision itself goes into some dark mysterious place into which even he or she could not gaze. Ever. Again. So I tried to transfer some money to my girlfriend using the website. The transaction seemed to go through ok, but then was held up and I was asked to make a call to verify the transaction. This I did. I explained who I was sending the money to and that I knew them well and the person on the end of the phone released the money and I was emailed a collection number. No problem, this all seemed to be as expected.

However, my friend went to collect the money and was told there was a problem with MoneyGram's system. She went to a number of outlets and was eventually told that the number was wrong. So I called MoneyGram back up. This time they again went through the security checks saying that there is a high level of fraud occurring in the area I wanted to send to. Yet again I explained exactly as I had before. This time they decided that I was being scammed by my friend. Told me to look at a website called toogoodtobetrue.com (which doesn't exist by the way). I explained that I understood their concern about being scammed, but that I was prepared to take the risk. Really I have been around long enough to understand. However, they point blank refused to release the money.

The patronizing attitude of the CSR and the company is unbelievable. I am an adult and able to make my own decisions. Now 6 days later they have a hold on the money. They can't be bothered to release it and the bank won't return it as they say it hasn't been taken out of my account. Eventually in another few days the pending transaction should be removed and I will again have access to the money. But that will be 7 to 10 days without access to the funds.

I have tried emailing them a number of times to ask them to release it, but to no avail. The first time they replied with an email explaining that they aren't responsible for scams which I totally accept. It was my risk to take and they explained that I should only send money to someone I know personally, which is exactly what I was doing.

It is beyond my understanding, how they can stay in business. Refusing transactions based on some spurious reason and chewing up hours of their time on the phone is not good business. I have used Western Union before with absolutely no problem. Frankly, you can tell from the number of similar reviews on this site that they have a problem. If you have an alternative I wouldn't risk it. You might be lucky and the money go through, but it looks as if a good percentage fail for spurious reasons. At which stage you have lost access to your money and no transfer is made.

I gave the intended receiver the money transfer number, then this happened: Receiver went to a first MoneyGram location and they claimed the number was invalid. Receiver printed out the actual email with the transaction number as well as a list of locations. Receiver went to a second listed location which does not actually do MoneyGram and states they've been trying to get themselves removed from MoneyGram's list of locations for about 5 years with no success. Receiver went to a third location where it was impossible to pick up the money even after the agent called MoneyGram and spoke with them for about an hour (being on hold most of the time). Sender ended up having to call Moneygram over the phone to cancel the transaction since MoneyGram decided to lock his online profile for some unknown reason.

Bottom line: MoneyGram cannot be trusted to deliver money correctly. All that is supposed to be required to pick up money from a transfer service is the transaction number and an ID. In this case, even though the transaction was sent with no signs of issues and the receiver showed up at the location with the correct number and good identification, it was absolutely impossible for the money to be picked up. The transaction had to be cancelled and the overall experience was a total failure and major inconvenience for both the would-be receiver, who could not get the money he was counting on in a time of need, as well as for the sender, who could only get the transaction cancelled after dealing with the non-English-native phone reps and going through 20 questions.

I will make this short - do not use MoneyGram. If you send money through Walmart to Walmart, you will have no problem. If the amount you are sending is more than $900.00, you will be told that you must use MoneyGram. I would suggest you use Walmart to Walmart and break the amount into two or three separate transactions. Know that if you send an amount like $1,700.00, by MoneyGram, you will have to be interrogated by phone. Yes, prepare to answer multiple personal, stupid and inane questions. Listen closely, the interrogator will be very difficult to understand. You may be disconnected or transferred many times. You will be told that unless you answer the questions, the money will not be released to your receiver.

Complaining to MoneyGram will be a waste of time. I paid $34.00 for this inadequate service. Next time I send an amount of $1,700.00, I will make two separate transactions, (eg. 900.00 and 800.00). I will be charged about $20.00 and Walmart to Walmart will get it there in 10 minutes. Easy. By the way, Walmart should not contract with these slimeballs - it's shameful.

I called MoneyGram and was told that the money was paid to a recipient in a different city Asaba in a different state altogether earlier on that same day by a person with same ID etc and there is no way my recipient could have made it to that city and state in that short period of time! MoneyGram has refused to refund the money to the church nor to me. They have stolen from God! I think it is a well devised scam well within MoneyGram agents, MoneyGram and the general public need to be aware of this because if it happens to me and they get away with it, chances are, it will happen again!!! Senders beware!

I purchased 2 money orders. After I purchased the money orders I filled in the money orders with all my information. My money orders were placed in a drop box. After dropping them in a drop box I found out 2 days later that the box was broken in to & my envelope was stolen. I contact MoneyGram & was told that my money orders were being cash. I told MoneyGram my money orders were stolen out of a drop box & I have a police report. The response was I have to pay them to get copies of the money orders. I made them the money & they emailed me a copy of the money orders. On the back of the money orders there was not stamp or writing on where the money orders were cash. I call them back - the response I get from MoneyGram is I have go get my money from the place that cash the money orders.

3 weeks later I found out where the money orders were cashed but MoneyGram is still not helping me with getting my money back. Now MoneyGram telling me they are not responsible for my money even after MoneyGram still made for the money orders after I reported the money orders stolen. MoneyGram is a fraud & does not protect your money. I trying to find out how I can get my money back. My money orders was for the amount of one was for $1000 & the other for $466. I went to the bank where the money orders were cash & they was no help. Even though they cashed the stolen money order the back BBVA Compass Bank feels they are not responsible either. No one want to take responsibility & just give me my money back. I need help. This is fraud.

Used MoneyGram 10 times and the last transaction was canceled and supposedly refunded to my account up to 10 business days. Spoke to non-English speaking CSRs at least 10 times with transfers to another curry-eating CSR. These inept borderline autonomous fragmented pseudo-English speaking people are worthless to get any information and just mentioned that it was "elevated" to the lady. WTF? I had a bad picture of what was actually happening on the other line. Needless to say I have NOT received my funds from them and I have notified my financial institution to bring some strength into this BS.

I know that there are another funding sites that offer better services but since I never had issues before I assumed things would be transparent as usual. I was wrong, DEAD wrong. This company is run like a big bully with a low IQ. I gave up and hope that BOA will settle this with the chimps in the desert. Damn these people. If only my hand could travel to their receiver end.

Went in to send some money to a friend that needed some gas money to make it home and the cashier in Wal-Mart misunderstood and printed me up a MoneyGram money order. "Not a problem" I said "let's just cash it and send the money electronically." Swing and a miss, even though it had been purchased less than a minute earlier MoneyGram denied Wal-Mart's request to cash it. So the cashier hands me a receipt and the money order (which is now signed over to Wal-Mart) and tells me I will have to call the number at the bottom to get it sorted out.

I go out to the car and make the call and 30 minutes later after answering many questions repeatedly I am told they are closed and to please call back later. I call several other numbers listed on the web for them and get to talk to a real live person that tells me they can do nothing today and to try back tomorrow. So long story short I'm out the cash, the person I was sending it to is sleeping in their car and Wal-Mart has lost my business and MoneyGram will see that payment canceled by my bank in the morning. Worst part is they have my full name, social security number, bank info, and driver's license info.

I went to Walmart to send my grandson some money, which I do occasionally, the Walmart to Walmart Service. I was told that because of the larger amount ($1500) they would have to send it by MoneyGram. First time customer of MoneyGram and will never use them again. I sent the money, and my grandson could not pick it up and was told to tell me to call this 800 number he was given. And he was at another Walmart to pick up the money.

So I called the number, after giving them the trans # and my name and address, they said they could not help me and transferred me to another department. Went through the whole thing again. Then the questions started. Why am I sending him money, what is his name, and a few more questions. Then put me on hold because I was on a cell phone and said to not hang up, they were calling my house phone, they could not talk to me on my cell. Disconnected me, as soon as the put me on hold, and never called the house.

Called back, told them I was disconnected, and I had to start all over, talking to the first person and then the second. This one was rude! Put me on the defensive. Tried to ask, why all the personal questions. Would not give me an answer. Just said, "Do you want your money or not?". She said, "I will hang up on you and refund your money." Then I asked how would the money be refunded. She would not tell me. Instead said, "I will hang up on you now or are you going to answer my questions?".

Now some of the same questions as before plus a bunch more. Asking do I know this person, my response, "Yes he is my grandson." What street is closest to your street address, the only way they would know that is, they had to look up my address on a map. "How often do you talk to him, when was the last time you seen him face to face, how old is he, why does he not have the same last name, really? How well do I know him, why are you sending him money, what is it for", I said, "To buy a car", then she said, "Is he financing a car or buying a car in full?", I said buying it outright, is this the full amount of the car. The name of the person or business he is purchasing the car from, why does he not already have a car, my answer, "Was wife getting the only car in a divorce, are you sure about what you are doing?"

There were more questions than this, but I was boiling while trying to answer these questions. I felt violated!! I felt like I was forced to answer personal questions so he could get the money, he needed now. None of this is their business. I felt like I was the one being scammed by them, trying to get private information that is private to me!!! How do I know that they are not collecting this information to try to scam me. I think Walmart should drop MoneyGram! I do not think Sam Walton would want to be associated with a company with such a bad reputation. This is not what the image Walmart tries to portray.

I sent money to my wife which they refused to release. She was told I had to call them before the money can be picked up (I understand this, Security!). I called and I was redirected to a different department which I put on hold for about 45 mins after being disconnected like twice. After I finally got a hold of someone, I was asked all sort of personal questions and the customer agent was so rude. The personal questions had nothing to do with money sent. I was even asked how many kids I have. What has that got to do with the transaction? The only question I wasn't asked was how often we make love. I am really displeased with their service. My advise, use Western Union. They might be slightly more expensive but I think it's worth it. I sent the money via a Canada Post outlet. My advise is that Canada Post should dissociates with them before they drag their name in mud.

I registered for MoneyGram Internet account. Completed rigmarole to Direct Deposit USD into PH PhP in Bank of Philippine Islands account. My transfer immediately rejected. Reason: my US bank account was "not verified". Called MoneyGram CR. Transferred to 3 departments. Three CSRs spoke minimal English. After 35 minutes of nothing but continuous run around, last CSR told me to call Telecheck for answers to why my US bank account not verified. I called Telecheck. I spent 15 minutes immersed in Telecheck similar rigmarole. Second Telecheck CSR announced my US checking account updated and verified. Telecheck CSR told me to attempt to complete previously rejected MoneyGram transfer to PH. I processed another transaction with identical results: US bank account not verified.

I called MoneyGram different CSR who told me to again call Telecheck. This time I was never able to speak with Telecheck CSR. After 1 and 1/2 hours of absolute frustration and fruitless results I called MoneyGram. I told MoneyGram CSR to cancel my account. I emphatically would never attempt to transfer money through MoneyGram again.

After reading numerous customer complaints on Yelp website, it amazes me how that MoneyGram remains in business. MoneyGram certainly does not offer anything remotely resembling satisfactory money transfer services to its clients. I never encountered problems using Xoom.com money transfer services. Xoom fees are only slightly higher than are MoneyGram, and Western Union money transfer fees. Xoom money transfers are fast and reliable which is positively not the case with MoneyGram.

I've been using MoneyGram for a long time now. I'm completely unsatisfied with them. I send money to the same person every month in another country. Now I have to verify information and then being asked personal questions. Something is wrong here. Then I'm advised that my name has been flagged and MoneyGram won't give me a reason. Don't understand what's the problem here. I go on their website to track the transfer... No record found... It's been 3 days that I sent this money and now no record found. So as I discussed before called into customer care and I have to verify myself and I'm asked all these stupid questions. NO... Cancelled my transfer and never using them again.

I have been using the app for the android phone for over a year now, all of a sudden they started to flag my money transfers. Every time I made a transfer online I would have to call them to get it cleared. The other day I did a money transfer, I called up and they cleared it - gave me a reference number. When I woke up, my friend in the Philippines said that she went to pick up the money and they told her that it was canceled. I went to go online to check out what the problem was and I couldn't even get online. They blocked my account. I am an American citizen, I speak English. Half of the customer service people can barely speak English! They are telling me that I am a security risk. I will never use MoneyGram again.

After 2 years of being a customer their security dept decides that I am a security risk... Like some of the stories I read on here. My son served in the military 6.5 years. I'm an American citizen and they won't even give me an explanation why I can't send money online... Wow after being in this country for 43 years, having 2 American born children, according to their security dept I am some kind of risk? WOW... I thought in America you were innocent until proven guilty. By the way I send 250 dollars per month to Costa Rica. Yeah that would bankrupt the United States in about a trillion years.

MoneyGram has no respect for its customers, at all. I am a soldier in United States Army, I send to my father $150 every month just to help a little bit with some bills. Today I sent $2000 to a friend of my uncle who is getting married, my uncle gave me the money to do so, I have a proof for that. And they blocked it even though they say that there is a limit of around $3000 per month. Called them to find out why, but because of my accent they decided to close my account for good. I asked "why would you close my account", they said "because of your activity"!!!

I only send money to my father! I can not believe this so so racist person I talked to, he hates international people, even though I am a US citizen and serving in the army! (also I found out from reading other comment that there is a lot of US soldiers having the same problem. The thing that makes me wonder is that it's the first time I used my military ID before they closed my account. I don't know if they have something against military or just racism even though they make money out of people like us.)

Sent money to my girlfriend using MoneyGram like I always do and this time it was stolen from the pickup location by someone other than my girlfriend. Called MoneyGram and they were to resend the money to her. She goes to pick up and they tell her to have me go back to the store and refund the money and resend. I go back to the store to refund and they won't let me. We call again and they said it was already picked up and they wouldn't refund. They also said they didn't care that I lost my money because it was stolen because the money was pick up. I will be using Western Union for now on.

Money sent from Canada to Tanzania was given to someone without the proper identification and signature (fraud). MoneyGram says that since the money was already picked up (even though they gave it to someone without proper ID) they can do nothing about it and will not reimburse the funds. They should have some 'insurance' when there is fraud involved. I did get an apology. I will not recommend MoneyGram for people to use as it is not secure.
