For our 2022 income tax return, we used H&R Block software. I was concerned that their software was not calculating correctly, so I called them in early February to report my findings. The rep kind of brushed me off, and told me to just wait for the update to the software which was coming out on March 3rd, and everything would be fixed if it was broken. So I waited, and then e-filed my taxes on March 4th. The calculations did not change, but since they are suppose to be tax experts, I had to assume they know more than I do. A couple of weeks later, the IRS sent me a letter wanting more information since something did not look right to them. My return had me getting $500 back from the IRS. I immediately replied to the letter, and gave them the info they asked for. I have not received a response back yet, but since that time, H&R Block has had 2 more software updates.
The latest one was on March 30th...only 2 weeks before the tax filing deadline. When I updated my software, my filed return went from me getting a $500 refund to now owing the IRS $28,000! How is a company allowed to be in business when they change their product with constant updates that changes the results of your tax return in such a drastic manner? And it now says there will be another update on April 14th! How is that even legal? For all of those people that bought the H&R Block software and filed their taxes early, there could be many mistakes on their returns. This is totally unacceptable! The tax laws for the previous year are in place on January 1st, so there should be no updates allowed after January 31st. Buyers beware!!!

Hi, I had a terrible experience with H&R software that I purchased a few weeks back. I tried everything but it upload correct data, I tried both importing the data and manually entering it and eventually reached out to helpdesk, they told me they will escalate it to tier-2 and they will call me back in 5 business days and when I didn't get a call in 7 days I called back I was told that due to tax season that time frame has increased to 11 days, and I argued that yes it's tax season and that's why I want my problem to be resolved as well.
So the helpdesk said she can try for refund which I agreed to and so I inquired about the process and what she said was so unacceptable. She said to write a letter and include the address, name, photoid and my SSN along with purchase receipt and mail (not email) to some address, I said I am not comfortable sharing my SSN like that to which she said "I can't help you if you are not comfortable", and all in all I am stuck with a software that doesn't work and wasted time and money on that. I would like to get my refund but not at risk of identity theft.
Thanks,Anshul

While the software is pretty intuitive and easy to use, there are some notable downsides. First, the tax help is terrible. I used to use TurboTax and, at least until I stopped using it 6 yrs ago because it was getting too expensive, it had much better advice & support. Second, this is the second year in a row that I've run into weird technical issues. It's weird because I used it for 3 or 4 years in a row before that without any glitches. I'm not sure what they've done behind the scenes but clearly, their technical team is dropping the ball. I WILL NOT use H&R Block for this reason when I file my 2023 taxes.

H&R Block is dealing with some major server errors this tax year with their online tax prep services. I've used this service for 6 years. This year, it has been impossible to electronically submit my taxes. The process is lengthy with extreme server delays. After I submit my taxes, I get the same error message. I've tried to submit our taxes on several devices (computers & phones), and several internet connections. Each time, it's the same error. When we tried to download our files from the site and we get a notification that the file is "corrupted" and unable to be downloaded.
I've contacted several of their "agents" with no resolve. I was told that someone would contact me 7-10 business days from when they finally escalated my case. I'm on day 14, and having to go through the entire process of contacting "agent" after agent who is "escalating" my case. This evening I was finally told "We have had a few issues with updates due to the changes from the IRS but our team has been working diligently on resolving them." I asked if the issues would be resolved before the IRS filing deadline and received no response. I'm going to look into a different tax service. After reading other reviews on this site, I know I'm not the only person fighting these issues. It's so frustrating; especially, not knowing if these issues can and will be resolved.

Terrible experience with H&R Block. Spent considerable time troubleshooting bugs in the software (esp. issues with how they handle investments and foreign tax credits). Finally was able to file and Federal return was rejected immediately. I contacted support for help and was asked to contact IRS instead. Asked for a refund on the price I paid and was rejected. Disputed the charge through Amex and won. Won't do business with this group again.

I Have been using them for 9 years.. After 2020 my taxes were withheld when I called them to ask what was going on.. They got an attitude and refused to answer me. They had no problem taking their fees out of my state refund while my federal was being withheld.. Not to mention they don't give any discounts or incentives to long term clients. Being a single self employed mother I find it absolutely ridiculous that their fees jump around so much. Paying 553.00 to have them done in 2020, And last year 520.00. So this year I decided to go with a program of those of low income to see my refund.
They make a big deal to advertise maximizing your refund. When in reality they can give you the same amount you can get from free programs. This is not to mention the people working on your taxes are those who are retired or needing extra money. Needless to say I've gone through so many who have worked there, And most of them don't look like they have the mind to be doing taxes. They constantly ask others for help. Definitely not somebody that I would be paying so much money for with little professionalism. I make sure everything is organized and written all out. All They're doing is putting it in the computer. So my question is why are they charging so much when there's nothing special they're doing.

Hi, I first took an appointment at the store, she never got back to me, took all my documents and never responded back. I kept calling and texting her. She never got back to me. Then I went online and filed from H&R block website, then they forced me to buy $50 pro so they can sign on my taxed, now it has been so long, no updates on their website. I keep calling them just so they can transfer me to other department and then hang up. Please stay away from this tool.

H&R Block is a collection of nice tax accountants who have zero competence to write and maintain software. I e-filed my taxes in mid-February with downloaded H&R Block software after it repeatedly indicated there were no errors or problems with the return. From my end, the submission froze in IRS servers and has stayed that way for over three weeks. At the H&R end, the IRS informed them that their software created an error in my filing (a fake report of rental income, when none existed) and told them within five minutes of my submission that it had been rejected. Since that moment, my return has been listed as pending in their software and the software will not allow resubmission.
The worst part of this company is that they only pretend to offer customer support. At least half the time, the staff that answers the phone almost immediately hangs up on a customer (in fairness, the staff seem to have to create a new case number for each call and that step seems to trigger disconnection). The basic staff seems nice, but innocent of any technical expertise or basic support practices (like looking up the case record before having a caller repeat every detail with every call, all while denying this problem could exist when the record clearly indicates that it does).
The frontline staff must consult two different systems to respond to customers (one accessed with email, the other accessed by social security number), and some staff members seem unaware the second system exists. And most ridiculously, the technically competent staff can be accessed by the basic staff only by sending short text messages. In my last call, the staff member sent some 9 short messages over the course of an hour, with the technical staff reading only minor details of my case and giving nonsensical responses that frustrated the person trying to help me even more than they did me.
A firm with this structure and these systems is designed to fail. The front line staff answering the phone is unable to do anything other than spew lies fed them by the technical staff. Examples:
• a March 2nd update for federal forms would fix the problem – no it did not.• my case was escalated to the mysterious technical staff and they would respond directly to me in two days – never received any response at all
• actually, it would take the technical staff five days to respond, not two – again, no response ever received
• the IRS would automatically clear my tax return after three weeks and reject my return so I could fix the H&R Block created error – nothing of the sort occurred.
The one detail where the support staff was consistent and clear is that no refund would be provided for my purchase of the software. H&R Block takes zero responsibility for its product and is nothing but a monstrous waste of time and money. The only worse outcome here would have been for me to wait until early April to file my taxes with their software. As it is, I can purchase TurboTax and start over from scratch.

H&R Block Expat Tax Services is an online tax preparation service specifically for overseas residents who need help with their US tax filing. They has been giving me the runaround for the last 3 weeks. I asked my supposedly expert "tax consultant" 3 times, via the portal's Message Center, to give me a rough estimate of fees before starting the Streamlined Filing. I received no answer, and yet he repeatedly emails me with a system-generated message: "I'm so close to finishing your tax return, but I need a bit more information. Please sign into your account to see what else is needed. If you need help or have questions, feel free to reach out to me in the Message Center of your account." I am now in the process of engaging one of the many other professional online expat tax services to help me.

I have been a H&R block user for years and have had no issues. I have received the e-file rejection code FD-32-S1-F1040-080-02 while trying to submit my return, the fix was supposed to happen on the update of 2/2/23 and then on 2/17/23 and still no fix and now I am being told it will happen on 3/2/23. I have lost all confidence with H&R block that the fix will ever happen, I have spent over 8 hours on hold or talking to support to fix this issue to no avail. I have talked with a representative about the situation and I asked for a refund and was told to get it from Amazon, which I am unable to due to it being past the time for a refund because I have been waiting for a fix for the program.

I paid over $200 for the preparation of my 2022 taxes because the online software required me to add a “tax professional” in order to report a total of three losses on Section 1256 Contracts it did not allow me to enter on my own. Long story short, I prepared 98% of my return myself, paid, uploaded every tax document immediately for the tax pro’s review, and waited. And waited some more. After a week had elapsed and there was no progress, I sent a message to my assigned tax pro and she never responded. Another day went by, I sent another message urging her to please respond because she was holding up my filing and refund, and still no response. I placed a total of six calls to H&R Block, having to re-explain my situation each and every time, and after being promised multiple times to be reassigned a new tax pro I still hadn’t been.
I finally requested a refund and sat on hold while a very nasty representative said she needed to ensure that a refund was warranted. The moment I confirmed I’d been refunded and hung up that call, I immediately filed with Turbo Tax which let me enter all of my information myself and only charged me $130. I will never go back to H&R Block after using them for years. Because I was so dissatisfied with my experience, I decided to look up my “tax pro” on LinkedIn and she’s not even an accountant and has no accounting-related work experience or education. They charge over $200 for that? Shameful.

I have used H&R Block for the last 5-6 years and never had an issue. However this year after completing my taxes I filed using e-file. In less than a minute it came back rejected. The rejection letter indicated that the issue was with form 8962 (a calculation error). I inspected the form and found no issues with it. I then called H&R Block's help desk and the gentleman that took my call was just as confused as I was. He could give no explanation as to why it was rejected but advised me to e-file again. So I e-filed a second time and it was rejected within minutes.
I finally used TurboTax, and inspected each form to make sure they were correct. Form 8962 was exactly the same as H&R Block's. I e-filed the return from TurboTax and within 3 hours it was accepted by the IRS. I can only surmise that the file sent by the H&R Block software was somehow skewed. The only reason I am giving H&R Block 3 stars is because they gave me a refund for their product with no hassles.
Error 1 of 1Rejection Code: **
Form 8962 Calculation
Problem: If Form 8962, Line 1 Total Family Size has a non-zero value, then Line 5 must be equal to Line 3 divided by Line 4.
Solution: Review Form 8962 for any errors. If you find errors, correct them and try e-filing again. If you don't find any errors, you can use the HR
Block Tax Software to print and mail a paper return.

I usually file with Turbo Tax but this year some things have changed for me with refund advance and I really wanted the advance. I heard H&R Block offered it. I had to file in person or remotely to qualify for the advance. I understand why now. Anyway after 4 hours of waiting to get started, now comes the best part. It cost me 419 bucks to file. Normally I pay 39 bucks with Turbo. I thought well I need the advance so I did it. Lady did not explain that it goes by your credit score and bam! I was denied. I lost 419 and did not even get the advance. Never Never Never again will I ever file with these guys. I'm pissed. I had a w2 with nothing special. 419 is insane compared to 39 bucks. Ugh.

I have used H&R Block Premium Tax software for years. I filed late this year and was paying close attention due to the losses our business took and noted the amount of tax owed based on my taxable income was being calculated incorrectly (29K of taxable income and I owed less than $100). I contacted H&R Block and they provided an updated version of the software that did not fix the problem. No one seemed to know what to do. I have not seen any other complaints about this. Ended up filing a paper return to correct the issue. I would think H&R Block would have some avenue if a bug in their software is detected, someone could email them to let them know and respond. The phone people do not know how to handle this.

Afterwards they completing my taxes which if I'm still having the IRS and Colorado saying I still owe them money. My taxes aren't done. H&R basically ghosted me as I received additional tax payment request from Colorado and the IRS. Switched from TurboTax two years ago. This year decided to pay for the tax pro to make sure everything is correct. The pro who was slow to reply. I thought it was tax season maybe she was busy, but that was ok, filed with no problem. After a few months received a letter from FTB saying that I owe taxes. As far as I remembered I paid them through the portal. The portal has no info on transactions, etc. It just has a banner saying something like "Congratulations, your taxes have been filed!". First time I see a portal where you pay for stuff but cannot see your transactions.
Messaged tax pro and no reply after a few weeks. Called customer support and was told an appointment was set. Turned out it was not set. Called again and set another online appointment. On the day and time of the online appointment I log in for the video chat with the professional who wasn't there. I waited, nobody showed. Called the office myself on the phone, the professional was there and sounded like she had no idea about the appointment. Not able to answer my questions and I was told I just have to pay. Question is - why did I pay all that money for tax pro's "guarantee"? I always filed taxes myself and never had this issue. So much for their claim of 100% accuracy for taxes, especially with the pro.
To add on top of all that you can really feel that all the online services are an afterthought, every time you speak to somebody they sound so shocked when you say you filed online and not at one of their offices. Terrible experience, never going through the antiquated H&R Block again, back to TurboTax.

Then I received an email saying that the funds were disbursed as I instructed. They have not. Every time I call the 888 number for H&R Block, I'm given the run around. My local H&R Block office they are avoiding my calls. I should've received my tax refund 6 weeks ago, but I still don't have it. I've used H&R Block for many years without a problem, about 12 years, but this year, they act like they have no idea what they're doing. They are constantly lying to me, giving me the run around and being of no help at all so that I can get my refund already!!!! This is the LAST time that I use H&R Block!!!!
I agreed to pay an H&R Block professional to double check my taxes to make sure everything was correct. I made a mistake and she didn't catch that mistake. The IRS said that I filled out a form wrong and made adjustments. The IRS said my refund was $1500-$300=$1200 which I actually got. I called a day before the federal filing date to check the status, they said they were working on it and would call me soon. No call, deadline passed. So I drove 20 miles to the same office to inquire. Very poor response from the office manager, saying they still had a day to file the state tax on time, and that they had given my file to a different tax rep, but that she was at her doctor's at that moment because she has a serious illness.

Then when it looked done, I had no access to my complete tax filings for my records. I had copied pages when working with the CPA but those were prior to final. I suppose they make you chained to them forever now? Preposterous! They don’t explain, if taxes are due when you file, how that payment is to be made if you haven’t bought into their credit card system. I was appalled I didn’t send in money when they filed.. but my CPA told me what to do since she was still available to me. You go directly to the IRS site and pay.
None of this information is available to, you! Stay away.. there are far far better sites. ..and if you do find yourself there, get the CPA service.. just for a person to help you. This is important stuff and between the IRS and your money.. do it right. Just don’t do it with H R Block.

Probably not a review for everyone. I have over ten properties and cannot use h&r block as it cannot save and reopen my return once I get to a certain point adding data reloaded program and upgraded from deluxe to premium and put data in several times! Spent hours on hold and talked with various agents who are nice enough but unhelpful. The return will not reopen once a lot of data has been added, it seemed to be fine until an upgrade/update around the 10th of February.

Since I used for 2020, I logged back into H&R Block and input all my data, including uploading Schwab 1099 forms. I was shocked to see that on less income than last year, when my total tax bill was about 4,000, this year Block calculated it to be 41,400, including $39,000 in Alternative Minimum Tax. (My total income, including Social Security, is less than 80,000.) There was no way to see how this crazy calculation had been made without paying for the program, and then printing out the forms. Once I did this, I found the program had for some reason inserted the total of my long and short term Capital Loss carryovers on to the AMT worksheet, and came up with the crazy $39,000 in AMT. Took me another week, four phone calls, and literally hours of wasted time to get a refund. Writing this as I wait for a representative to speak to. Originally I filled out the 2021 1040SR IRS editable PDF form and used the 2021 IRS Tax Tables to find the tax on my taxable income. I then used H&R Block online program to verify my results and hopefully e-file my return. All the results via H&R Block supported my results except for the amount of tax on my taxable income. H&R Block was lower which made my refund higher. It was only $17 but I do not want any discrepancies in my IRS returns!! I then contacted a local H&R office and found out they offer a free “Look See” service. They reviewed my 1040SR 2021 IRS filled form and said it was correct. I asked them what was the tax on my taxable income and they confirmed what I obtained from the IRS 2021 tax tables.
So bottom line - there is a difference between the H&R office software and the H&R online software. It would be advisable for H&R to look into this ASAP. Anyone using their online software should verify their results based on the 2021 IRS tax tables available online from the IRS. Thanks and good luck. PS I did not use H&R Block but I appreciate their “Look See” service and the helpfulness of their office tax executive!!’

Most disrespectful, useless and frustrating tax services. I had TERRIBLE experiences with both in person and online resources. In person: I had an appointment for in one of their offices at 2 pm. I was there at 1:40 pm with my wife and kid. Customer service was terrible. After 20 minutes of waiting, a lady brought me a piece of paper asking me to write dow my FULL SSN. That was the most sketchiest thing I’ve ever seen. I asked her twice if she really want me to write down my SSN on a flying piece of paper? She said, "Yes. We just need to verify something." 2 pm, 2:15, 2:30 still waiting. I decided to leave because my baby was sleepy and he was crying and acting up.
Online: After the bad experience with the in person service, I decided to use the self online method. I did everything myself and when I wanted to finalize my return and send it out, they said before I can proceed, my taxes need to be reviewed by a tax pro and they automatically assigned me one. 3 days later, I checked my taxes status, it said a new tax pro has been assigned to my case with no additional explanation. I contacted the tax pro and she said she was working on my taxes.
Next day I checked, A NEW TAX PRO AGAIN. Then another one next day. Within 6 days, 5 different tax pros have been assigned to my account. It was a real frustrating situation. I then decided to call the customer service. After multiple tries, I was finally able to speak to a real person. As soon as she heard my voice she said “one moment Sir” and next thing I heard was another agent speaking to me in Spanish. I was like **!!! Needless to say I’m not even Spanish. I’m (naturalized) Black American with French as native language. I felt insulted because all she asked me was “what’s your name Sir?”, then I responded and she said instantly assumed I’m Spanish and transferred me a Spanish speaker. That is really offensive. This company is a total mess with no professionalism. I will NEVER use their service again and I will make sure to let everyone know about how terrible and trashy they are.

I've been using H&R Block tax software for 8 years. This is the first year I have not been able to file in a timely manner. The software keeps telling me I have an outdated worksheet. Note I said "worksheet," not "form." I've done the updates, and it's now Valentine's Day and I still can't file because of the worksheets. That said, I like the software. It's easy to use, though my taxes are pretty easy, even with a small side business. I can usually have everything entered in an hour. By then I'm ready to file...except for this year. I've been ready since January 21st, and it looks like I need to wait another week for the next update.

I switched to the H&R Block online software a few years ago and was loving it, but 2021 was a disaster. I completed my taxes but it kept insisting I owed thousands of dollars. It was counting a Roth IRA as income, but I couldn't find any way to change it. I finally just went to Taxact.com, paid more, and got it done correctly. The online site has gone too far at shielding you from forms so that I couldn't just check a box to check it. TaxAct did the same but asked me the right questions.
On top of that, I helped my friend to fill out his taxes a week later (they are simple) using H&R Block 2021 desktop software. We got his taxes done, but couldn't file because the program needed updating, which won't happen for another week. This was AFTER they charged his credit card, so unlike me, he was stuck. If you are a nonresident alien like me with F-1 visa, this company might be the worst one. Your federal refund will be maximized by applying deductions which are not eligible for nonresident aliens, and you might not be able to even notice these things, unless you compare tax documents prepared by other companies, line by line. If you have tax record issues, you would have some issues, when you apply for green card.
I used its online tax refund program, and I talked to one of tax professionals who reviewed my documents that I just wanted to follow tax laws of the U.S. and requested her to fix my tax documents prepared by H&R by removing deductions which are not eligible for a nonresident so that I can get appropriate tax refund. After that, I don’t know why, but my application was just cancelled without any notice from the professional or the company, but my payment was not cancelled. So I spend 4 more hours to cancel the payment. When I called the H&R customer service, I was just transferred a lot, and I should have repeated my personal information so they can identify me and explained my situation again and again. Their tech support in India tries to help on the chat, but it is woefully time-consuming and frustrating to try and fix an HR Block website problem with these folks.

On 2/16/2021, my account was charged $157.98 from H&R Block. This was an amount that I was quoted that I would be billed if I filed my 2020 taxes successfully through their company. The problem is that I did not end up filing taxes with their company and used another company to process my 2020 taxes. Despite this, I did not receive my money back and was wrongfully charged the $157.98 for services I did not end up using. It took a couple of months before I saw this charge, but when I did, I immediately contacted H&R Block on 5-9-2021. I was relieved after speaking with “Margareth I.” who apologized and assured me that I would be refunded within 3-10 business days. She provided me with case# 05479482 as a reference.
Once time had passed and I still had not received the refund, I was promised, I filed a complaint with the BBB on 5-17-2021 hoping this may speed up the process as it was getting close to the 10 day period I was quoted. I waited a couple of days and on 5-19-2021, I contacted H&R Block, yet again. This time was quite possibly the worst experience I have ever had, in my life, dealing with customer service. I spent almost FOUR HOURS being dropped, without warning, from one person, to the next, attempting to resolve this issue.
One agent, Julissa S., told me that my refund shows as processed, the case has been closed and to contact my bank. When I asked for any information that I could share with my bank, she repeated herself saying the refund had been issued. I again, asked for more information and was cold transferred back into the queue, AGAIN, but after she sent a quick sorry for the inconvenience message, rather than providing me with the information I kept requesting to give to my bank.
Eventually, I got someone named Brian who informed me that everything I had been told thus far was all false. He informed me that there was never even a case opened for my refund in the first place and it was not processed/sent to my bank because it was never initiated. He was the only helpful person I have found to date. Unfortunately, he was not able to file the refund request for me due to being in the sales department. The prior rep just dropped me to him, but I needed the product support team in order to get the request filed. He did provide me with some additional contact information (phone numbers) try to get assistance through, but I just couldn't do it any more. Mentally I just could not handle it. I am not only a single Mom, who runs a self employed business, I have bipolar disorder and anxiety, etc. and these situations are very difficult for me to handle at times.
I spent 4 hours that day getting now here, it took my entire evening and the worst part is it was for no reason because I wasn't even anywhere near where I thought I was in progress... Instead, I had not even began the process at all!! It is so discouraging considering all of the time I have invested in this and waiting for my refund that has not even been started, despite me expecting it to come in any day now. These are all things I should not have to be dealing with and going through in the first place because they should not ever have charged me for services they did not provide!
To date, almost 2 weeks now, they have yet to even acknowledge my BBB complaint, nor have I had any luck with them contacting me about my owed money. I did send an e-mail to them days ago and mailed out a letter today, to their corporate headquarters. Even though, I am not confident that this will change anything or that I will have my issue resolved by these various attempted methods. That is why I wanted to file a complaint with you as well because I would hope they would at least take this complaint serious, since the BBB they have not. I have been scammed, lied to and invalidly charged for services H&R Block did not fulfill and that I am owed and was promised to be refunded for, yet never received this and had a case # that was not even a case to begin with.
All of my communication I made sure to do through the live chat and saved all of the correspondence and will be happy to share, so you can see all of the lies I have been told and time/effort on my end to get this fixed, getting nowhere. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM, THEY STEAL MONEY AND DO NOT EVEN ACKOWLEDEGE YOU WHEN YOU REALZE IT!

She admitted that she had read my email and heard my voicemails and had not bothered to call back. She was patronizing me before putting me on hold, on the phone she would not let me finish my sentences. If I tried to say something she would talk over me saying the same information over and over (and that all these other customers are experiencing the same thing - even though I was never ever able to tell her what the website issue I had was). I did try to ask her to not interrupt me for a second so I could get my question out - but she took that as me needing to talk to her manager - now I have been on hold for over an hour (with spanish only information being repeated in my ear).
I was calling because I had filed my taxes in February, had some issues with the website, wanted to double check that my return was okay, or if I could get a refund for the $80 I paid to file the taxes through HR Block - as I have yet to receive a tax return, or an email, or any form of communication as to what happened to my return. I was told that they have 21 Business days to process - it's been about 45 (I filed 2/25/21, today is 4/12/21). I have been a loyal HR Block customer for the last 7 years, but I will be using a different tax service next year. This has been a really terrible experience. If you must hire people who are rude, please be sure that you are willing to lose customers.
I would have given HR Block a chance to make this right - even just by treating me respectfully, and hearing me out! No one I know uses HR Block, and no one else has had a single issue. Thank you, Krystal.

The tax professional, Mary **, told me that it was just like a debit card, and that I'd be able to transfer all of the money from the card into my bank account at my convenience. This is factually incorrect. Not only was the Emerald Card declined at multiple places where I tried to use it, the largest amount that can be transferred at any single time is $500. Eventually I got all the money off this card, then tore it up, happy that I would never use this card again.
Next year, I did my taxes with H&R Block again, but this time did them online (much cheaper) and had my routing and account numbers handy so that all of my money went directly to my bank account...where I can use it as freely as I would like. However, H&R Block sent me a new Emerald Card - despite not wanting or requesting one. When the latest round of stimulus payments were issued, these payments went to the Emerald Card. This transaction was never authorized. When I called H&R Block to find out why they deposited MY money onto THEIR card, I was hung up on three times, and then got into a screaming match with someone on the phone when I finally got to speak to a human.
The tax professional, Mary **, has failed to respond to 4 different messages from me indicating my dissatisfaction with the Emerald Card. This is not how you treat valued customers. I am on hold again with H&R Block - despite trying to get ahold of someone for more than an hour. This business model does not respect the customers, and when someone's money is moved without their authorization or consent, there are legal consequences.
I would strongly recommend that no one ever use the Emerald Card - and at this point - I would recommend never using H&R Block. No company that cares about its customers would make it such a labyrinthine endeavor to simply recover their own money. If nothing else, THEY NEED TO MAKE THE CARD MORE USER FRIENDLY and less embezzly through their controls that decide when and how someone can spend his/her own money.

Couldn't access my return to complete. Multiple glitches in their software. Finally was able to access my return by going into my applications on my PC from the Start search bar. If I went into my return from H&R Block return icon on my desktop, continually told me I had to download updates. This happened 5 times one day. When I was finally able to reach someone at their Helpdesk by phone, was told it was a problem with their software. Of course no online Chat available, even though they have an icon that shows "Chat." When the user clicks it, nothing loads - so no Chat.
Absolute worst experience I have ever had with software. Would have been far more economical for me to hire a CPA to do my simple taxes, given the hours I spent trying to submit my return and their numerous error messages to download updates, which the Helpdesk admitted was a software glitch. I would highly discourage anyone from getting their taxes done by them. H&R block was not upfront in anyway about tax prep fees, nor in the way they handle getting you your refund. When asked what the price would be when I made the appointment they told me $125 for a single income couple. It was only half way through the appointment when my wife noticed a few chart shoved under a computer base and read it, that we found out, if you are filing jointly with kids it's $169, then $45 for each child credit you claim, then another $45 to claim the earned income credit, then $39 to have them take the fees out of your return and you can't have it deposited into your account.
The tax preparer who did ours, had no idea about how any of the direct deposit stuff worked or how their emerald card program functioned. I would suggest saving yourself hundreds of dollars and just use turbo tax. Everything was going fine and the IRS supposedly, according to H&R Block, accepted my tax return. I heard nothing back from anyone. I then got a letter that there would be an adjustment to my income taxes because these documents were not sent, I thought nothing of it because said document was attached to my H&R Block documents.
Now, my tax status shows as non-filer and there seems to be no reason why. I contacted H&R Block because that is who the IRS told me to contact and the H&R Block has given me the run around on an answer. This is entirely too long of a story to completely detail, so I condensed it down. The first time I went into H&R Block The IRS ended up sending me letters and thankfully I had "purchased" their peace of mind protection, because I was told without that I'd have been on my own. Fast forward to this year. I went into the office to have my taxes prepared, I had a form from my student loans but they were put on hold because I started school again so I ended up only paying $10 in interest. I asked if I even needed to file that form and she shrugged and said "I don't know I'll just enter it and see what happens".
Through countless computer errors and many calls for help later on her part. I was done. We get to the payment portion and mind you I had one w2 and one student loan form. I was never informed of a price. when she asked me how I was going to be paying that day I saw my total was over $300. I was shocked. I asked here where that price came from and I was told that the form that said I paid $10 in interest on a student loan just cost me over $200. I didn't understand why that was and she couldn't give me an answer just kept pressing me for payment till finally I told her just take it out of my tax return.
I call corporate to ask why and to get some clarification. They forwarded me to a regional manager. It took days of chasing him down to even get him to call me back. Once he did finally call me, he told me to call him in a few days. So I waited and called that Friday, he wasn't available so I left a message. He calls me at 7pm, Calls me the wrong name and I correct him. He then tells me they will refund me the cost of the student loan form. Okay, cool. Then he proceeds to thank me for being a teacher. I am not a teacher. I correct him again. He hangs up on me. Now here we are 7 months later and I still can't get a refund or even clarification on what happened.
Their customer service is absolutely horrible as well. I asked to not be contacted by the store I went to because I was just completely over that place. THEY CALLED ME ANYWAY, and kept calling me until I answered the phone. Then told me they don't understand why I'm upset I got my taxes done didn't I? Just go see a real tax professional PLEASE. I had been using the H&R Block Deluxe Federal and State tax software for about 15 years and filed completely documented mail-in returns during all those years without ever having any problems or needing any help. Because I no longer benefit from itemizing my deductions, I decided to e-file my return for 2019, but filed the Federal return on 4/15 and decided to delay e-filing of my Virginia State return until 05/01. My initial Federal submission was rejected by the IRS because the 2018 (prior year) AGI did not match what the IRS had on file, even though the figure had presumably been imported from the identical H&R Block 2018 software on my PC.
When I attempted, subsequently, to file my VA State return, I had significant difficulty following the e-file menu and needed some help, only to find out that getting such help from a so-called "tax pro" would cost $39.95, more than the price of the software. I finally solved the problem on my own by trial and error. After selecting electronic withdrawal from my checking account as the payment method for VA State the tax due, I found, to my complete consternation and dismay, that to complete the State e-file process, H&R Block assessed me an e-file fee of $19.95. At this point, I had little choice but to proceed, even though the H&R Block Deluxe Federal & State software claims to provide free e-filing. That proved true for the Federal return only, for which I was provided an e-file verification code, but turned out to be a misrepresentation or omission of disclosure for the State tax return.
Based on these negative experiences with the e-file process using H&R Block software, I provided a lukewarm rating at the end of the process and asked for an explanation. I received an e-mail from a "no-reply" H&R Block address asking me to call in to discuss my complaints further. I had to look up a number to call on Google, but decided first to try chatting online with an agent because I anticipated long delays in having my phone call answered. After reaching a live agent, who gave her name as Michelle, on 04/13/2020, on the chat line, and as I was trying to work my way through my several complaints, this agent turned out to be haughty and dismissive. She failed to allow me even to complete my entries before jumping in and giving me an incomplete or irrelevant response because she had not read my queries in their entirety or in context.
When I then tried to complete my entry, her response on two occasions was a snotty "I just told you that." I ended the chat in total frustration and anger. This woman had no idea of the meaning of "customer service." I then decided to file a formal complaint and tried to do so by phone. I was repeatedly told that my call would be answered in anywhere from 4-6 minutes. After nearly one hour, the line went dead! I will switch to TurboTax next year!

I got through my somewhat complex tax filing this year on the H&R Block Tax file website. I was in a time crunch because I needed to file in order to avoid being loopholed out of my COVID stimulus money. The site works great importing data from other financial institutions. It does everything else quite well and most of it is self explanatory. I have a refund coming plus my EIC was calculated by their site. It's all straightforward until you get to the end. I found there is no free-file as advertised. I went ahead and ordered the cheapest option from their selection.
Normally I would have left such deception if COVID 19 didn't make things so uncertain. I'm not getting any refunds this year nor any in the foreseeable future because I owe a significant amount of tax from 2017. The government can garnish my Social Security Disability benefits. They never used to be able to do that but the law changed some years ago. My disability benefits will be offset by Treasury if I don't get them paid back soon. The H&R website would not let me just hit a send button and let me be done with it all. They had a whole bunch of convenience options to select which cost more money.
I wasn't allowed to just hit the send button and be done with them. After some difficulty I managed to get past all that hassle but then the site wouldn't accept my address for some reason. The same address I've had since the 1980s. It finally dawned on me that I had this problem last year and abandoned the site and copied all the amounts onto a paper form and mailed it in. But like I said earlier, I'm in a time crunch because I don't want to get loopholed out of my COVID stimulus check.

The program also ignores item 9b of form 8960 (investment expenses). Overlooking the item would result in a higher tax. I explained these issues to the support staff. After that everything is done online. Very simple, no stress and accurate. I think you save money if you go and visit an office. Both times I went it was slightly cheaper than online. I give them five stars.

They are direct and to the point, exactly what is needed to prepare taxes, they only ask for what is needed to complete all the forms. You are charged by the form and they complete both Federal and State taxes.

HandR Block took time to listen and executed in fine fashion. There was an item we were not aware of and they informed us it could come up next year. My wife and I have social security and my wife has a small tutoring job. So every penny on our taxes is very important. H and R explained each line item in detail. I had items that were not used because they were not used. Also the Block employee showed us how business miles could make a difference next year.. We had never used a tax company to do our taxes before this year but after researching Block, we were happy to use them.

Me and my husband have been working with H&R Block for 12 years. They are exceptional. Always knowledgeable, timely, and professional. I believe the fee is more than worth it. There is no price on peace of mind.

Used online free service. Fed & State forms done in about 30 min. Filing was free. Felt they did good double-check to make sure I got maximum refund, and had all the correct information. Offer to save information for next year just a few dollars. Refund in bank within 7 days. Help was available if I needed it. I've used this for past 8 years, no need to use anyone or anything else. Awesome!

I have been using H & R Block for over 20 years and have been pretty happy with the experience. The price, of course is where I rate them the lowest since most of the time my preparation entries stay pretty much the same and many of the forms have hardly any numbers but am apparently charged by the number of forms, since the price keeps going up for less than an hour's preparation time. The customer service, preparation times are great and filing is very fast, being mostly electronic. If you don't mind paying more and want to be pretty sure that you won't be audited, I would definitely recommend using them to prepare your taxes.

I’ve used this tax software in the past, but this year’s product was disappointing. I assume changes they made were due to tax law changes, but questions asked were sometimes difficult to understand what they were asking. Customer service was no help. I took over 50 minutes to get representative on chat and then they could not answer my questions. I was transferred to, and again placed on hold with the next level support whom never came on line.

Ease of use and quick. Simple for people who don't have a lot of deductions. Able to be used by anyone no matter how iffy you are with computers. I like how you can easily upload your w2 on the site and it transfers all your information.

They did not take into consideration my long-term capital gains losses. Which increased my taxes owed by over $1000.00, that is why I do not care for their service this year. If you have to use a tax preparation service I would choose someone different than H&R Block.

Started using H&R Block software about 5 years ago. Had been using a competitor but decided to change. Had a new learning curve with this software but it almost writes itself. I have my records totaled before starting so I just have to go to the correct form and enter the numbers. The program transfers my data from last years return for me and even prints out a comparison of the two years. Just choose the correct program when you buy. I have rentals out of state and I can even file out of state return also.

I had done the online taxes for 29.99. Well they said I was getting 25K back in taxes. I was like nice but it was a mistake on their end. Now my taxes have been delay for over two months now. I will never use their service again. I should have done them myself. I would have had my tax return already. Please stay clear of this company.

All in all a good experience. Some confusion of which office had my tax forms. After that got straightened out it was good. It seems like a long process with their complicated software. Some of the employees were not sure how to use it but they knew who to ask.

Very easy to get an appointment with their office, and quick return on the taxes. I have used them for the passed several years. They explain all the details and help me get all the deductions I am entitled to.

I've been using their service for 14 years and to be honest, they're usually pretty great. I had one tax expert for ten of the years and he was always phenomenal. After he retired, was a bit of a different story. I've been reassessed for two of the 4 years with different experts now. And getting them to help is actually really hard. My files are "in a vault", "someone will call you", etc, etc. No one calls, no one reviews the files. That part really sucks. The service is fast if by appointment but be prepared that they are always behind and book appts too close together. If you can keep one expert, they can be great. Otherwise it's a roll of the die.

They really make sure that you get everything you’re entitled to without causing an audit. They take an aggressive yet conservative approach. Teri ** at H&R Block is extremely knowledgeable. They offer “peace of mind” for a nominal fee and go to bat for you if IRS has any questions. Highly recommend.

Any changes in tax laws are questioned to assure for the fullest refund possible. It's assuring to know if any problems I can contact HRB for assistance with any questions I may have. Software is easy to use for someone who is not computer savvy! I will use to prepare my taxes next year as well!

I like how their pricing model was not deceptive and free filing really meant free filing. Higher levels like investments required purchasing but as a college student they provided a great service that got me all the deductions I needed. It was also very straightforward and easy to use.

My wife and I had been paying a CPA for the past 15 years or so but this year I did a study on the best tax software and decided on H&R Block Deluxe. My research paid off because for the first time using it I was amazed at how user friendly and accurate our return(s) came out. Both the Federal and State were almost the same as previous years but we saved on the driving to the CPA's office and his fees, which were rather high we thought. So, all in all we are very happy with H&R Deluxe and will be using it again next year.

I have been using HR Block online for many years, the price is getting higher this year which I paid $146 ($60 extra to be able to live chat to ask questions). Everything looked good, but when I was on the final step to submit to Federal, I got error message that transmitting was failed. And I can't print and view PDF file either. I talked with 5 representatives online, went through every step for 2 days, finally somebody told me it was IT issues, then I was being hold 1:20 minutes on the phone that finally reached out some high-level IT person that I was being told that their server had problem. That they were working on it. Told me to try it again later this afternoon or tomorrow to see if works. It was frustrating. I need to think about if I would keep using them for the future years. I really hope that it doesn't spend too much of my time to be filed it smoothly.

I like this product because, someone like me who is not that computer savvy, is comfortable using it. I like it because it is easier and cheaper to use than a tax preparer or CPA. I feel that it is accurately done and complete. It's easy to prepare and easy to import documents. I like that E-File is easy on this program.
