Recently ordered this online software to prepare my personal taxes. There was an option to create a joint filing for myself and my spouse. But once this option was chosen, you could not disable it without having to re-purchase it again for a separate filing. It's a scam to get the customer to repurchase the software again. Further, the software had a confusing, difficult interface to use. I had to go elsewhere to buy another tax software. I used TurboTax - far better, and easier to understand.

Worst service ever!! I will never do my taxes again with H&R Block. They are overpriced and can't even do taxes properly. They had me do my taxes and forgot to get me to sign the proper papers before I left 2 days later. I get an email stating that I must have been in a hurry to cash my cheque because I didn't sign the papers and I need to go back there. I wasn't exactly running out of there. Then to email me. I had to drive from Toronto back to Windsor where I did my taxes to sign the papers. Then after I sign them tell me I can't claim my medical expenses because they are dated for this year. Which they were not.
Then I have just recently found out that they messed up my taxes last year and caused me a penalty of 320 because they forgot to enter my savings bonds correctly. So because they had to adjust it revenue Canada charged me 350 for them to adjust my assessment in a penalty fee. I have used H&R Block for 9 years and I found they just get sloppier and sloppier and it's overpriced at that. Never again will I do taxes with them. There is plenty of tax companies who do cash back, don't charge as much and don't heard you in like cattle just to make a quick buck even though it's done wrong. I'm done with them!!

H&R Block messed up my 2015 tax returns so badly that now even my ex husband is getting audited bc of their careless errors. The tax preparers put the wrong social in the wrong box, so it seemed as if I was paying alimony, although it was the other way around. I had bought the Peace of Mind Warranty so thought they'd help with the penalties, interests, taxes, etc, BUT they refused to pay anything w/out a valid excuse as to why. These criminals will screw you over then leave you paying thousands for their mistakes, which they fully admitted to making. HORRIBLE!

I've always used H&R Block. This year they are holding 691.00 of my money saying I owe them from 8 years ago for a prepaid emerald card. I told them that they took it out of my refund that I got back that year! It's a prepaid card! I was on hold for an hour waiting for the man to get back on phone. Now he says I have to wait for them to call me back! I'm getting robbed and they're getting away with it. This is not fair. I will never use H&R Block ever again considering I've used them since 1998. What can be done? This is so wrong.

I had information for the preparation of an estate tax return sent to the H&R Block office in Pinehurst, NC by my estate attorney in June, 2016. I was moving from the area in a month, but left the estate return to be done by this office since my attorney who had all the estate information was near by. That was a very serious mistake. After I moved to another part of the state on July 1, 2016, I called numerous times to see when the return would be done. I kept being told it would be done "that week." I was also told that the return was not due until Spring, 2017. Finally, in January, 2017, I called my attorney about the problem I was having concerning the return and she found out that the return had been due in Sept. 2016. She informed the tax person at H&R Block of this. The return was still not being done.
Finally, in February, 2017, I talked to the manager of the office and she promised me that she would see that the return was done "that week." NOTHING. I started calling again and then finally got the e-mail address and started e-mailing. I kept being promised that the return would be done and if there were any penalties from the IRS, that the H&R Block office would pay them. The preparer told me that she was going to my attorney's office and picking up papers she needed and that was holding things up. When April came and still no return, I called my attorney to find out that the preparer HAD NOT been in contact nor visited my attorney's office. She had outright lied.
In mid-April, I finally contacted the headquarters for H&R Block to try and get some assistance. They opened a case, but just contacted the Pinehurst, NC office and were told that the office was going to do the return. H&R Block headquarters closed the file. I got a call from the Pinehurst office telling me they had done the return, and that I owed them over $500.00. I had told them previously that I thought I should not have to pay too much after what they had put me through. The owner also had said something about a discount. NO DISCOUNT and they had NO apologies and just told me that "that is what the computer says you owe."
I again contacted the headquarters of H&R Block and was called back today telling me that they couldn't do anything about it. They could say something to the owner about not treating me well, but that was all. I have never experienced such unprofessional conduct. They have put me through extreme stress and it has been a terrible experience. My family has used H&R Block for years and I did for this year's tax return. However, after this, I will never use them again.

There is nothing wrong with the H&R Block on-line interface, but I felt like I was held hostage. After spending two hours entering my information, I was told that I had to. But the premium service for access to a form that should have been a basic form. Then I had to buy a tax pro review - this was not optional. All in all, I had to spend $160 to submit my taxes. Never again!! It felt like a victim of pathetic up-selling. "Very" overpriced when compared to other on-line services! And I was a long-time H&R Block customer. Not anymore.

I filed my taxes on H&R Block website and it wouldn't let me go any further until I paid for the Deluxe package that includes a tax professional. I couldn't print out my information that I had entered and it forced me to file an extension which I didn't want to do... as Taxes weren't due for a few days. I received an email after I filed the extension from the H&R tax professional stating that they were reviewing my taxes and would get back to me. The next day I received another email stating they needed better copies of my forms so I resent the information. For the next several days I emailed and called the tax professional that was supposedly working on my taxes and never received any response.
Days later I'm still late on my taxes, have not filed my taxes and spent two hours in a local H&R facility only to get a phone number to call, to try to get reimbursed my cost for the deluxe package. They should be held responsible for not finishing my paperwork, not getting back to me and NOT filing my taxes! I've since made an appointment with a professional CPA that will help me. In the meantime my tax penalties for state and fed keep climbing because of their lack of professionalism and poor customer service! THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN!

This does nothing if the IRS does not think you are a risk. All this company does is fill out the form that you can fill out at the IRS. You are paying $30 for someone to fill out a form that you can do yourself. They claim to help you get a pin number from the IRS. They can't. Only the IRS determines this and they send you a letter in November or December. Tax Identity Shield is a sub-contractor and H&R Block cannot help you with your problem. You only have 7 days to get your money back.

I had my 2016 taxes prepared in the Shawnee Kansas H&R Block location in March 2016. We were almost finished and the tax adviser was ready to submit my return when I asked if I would be eligible for a deduction due to the high out of pocket cost of my health insurance. She hadn't even thought of that and then told me that I would. I also had other expenses that I had incurred that I was able to increase that figure. Since I thought to ask this question, I was able to increase my refund by over $1000. Also, I had a 1095 form but it was missing a health insurance payment for the month of March.
The tax adviser told me she would take my word for it that I had health insurance. She didn't ask me to double check my paperwork to make sure I wasn't missing another form and it didn't appear to matter. My taxes were filed and three weeks later I received a letter from the IRS that I did indeed need to account for the month of March 2016. It turns out when I logged into the healthcare.gov, I had two 1095 forms instead of just one. When I took this letter to my tax adviser along with both forms, I was told she didn't have time to work on it and I needed to find help at another office. I paid $441.50 for a service which should have included expertise and knowledge in preparing tax returns. I won't go back to H&R Block.

I had gone to H&R Block, which I have used continually. But now will never use them again. My experience at the location in Collierville, Tn was horrible. I feel like my taxes are incorrect. When I asked the tax person a question about my health ins. deductions along with medicines, as well as a couple of bills I need to include that I had paid, she quickly let me know..."oh that's not going to help you". Their fees are a rip off. In the past when I went to a location, the person always said "I have a coupon would you like to use it towards the fee", quite generous I might add. But going to them for the past 2 years, I have had my taxes prepared wrong. When you confront them about this they act as if you had shot them.
I now call H&R Block, H&R Rob-ya. The only time they find money is for IRS, not the client. I will never use them again. I would also like to say maybe us people that are not 100 years old, I mean it's a shame that the elderly have to work, but good grief, there comes a time when you have to say to yourself as a company is this a good step. I mean this lady couldn't figure out where to put my IRS information, and she asked a younger guy to help her. And he said..."I don't know".

If I knew that I would get charged $478.00 to file my taxes with H&R Block, I would have chosen a different route. I've been claiming a tax loss with a large federal and state returns, and feel like I have been taken an advantage of. I was filing taxes for a full time job for part of the year and for two self-employment venues for the rest of the year (Uber/Lyft + real estate). I was satisfied with the level of service by a senior accountant who worked with me. Yet, in my opinion, this does not justify the cost.

I paid H&R Block to look over my tax return before submitting to the IRS. The 8962 form was not filled in completely and the IRS held my return till this was corrected. I corrected this, not the tax professional that I was assigned to. After this was completed the IRS released a small amount of my return that H&R Block was sure to take their fees from and I was mailed a letter that I was being audited in the 8962. So, now I have to wait on the rest of my refund as I have to submit more paperwork to the IRS on the 8962. Why charge for the service of a tax professional to double check your refund if they do not see that their online system did not completely fill out a paper and me have to do the legwork! I emailed the tax professional all of the paperwork as requested to file the return and I still had to correct the form!

According to "support" the software will allow you to enter anything, no matter how unlikely or even impossible, without raising any flags. It will allow information that is self contradictory. Whatever gets entered is your fault. In this case it allowed dollars to be input associated with dependents when I listed the number of dependents as "zero". The state caught this error immediately. H&R Block didn't even pop an "are you sure?" window. According to the floor supervisor, once you submit your return, in other words once they have your money, they "can't" issue a refund. You cannot escalate above a floor supervisor.

I do my taxes every year, never happened anything like what happened this year to file my 2016 taxes in H&R Block, Eastchase, Fort Worth, TX, office # 42073. They charged $233 fee for filing Taxes. I said "that's too much. I never paid that much." (The person who work on my documents was Mary **.) I tried to discuss with them. They said, "you can talk to the manager when he comes." I asked the front desk person to wait him in the waiting area. She pointed at the door, and told me "out that door," and I waited out. Then she came out with smile, and said, "we know that you won't use H&R again. Here's the manager's phone number **." I contacted him to discuss the over charge, he said, "we are done with that." And I tried to talk to him about the front desk person, he said "I'm glad the way they respond you (he rebated it 2 times), we can't do anything for you." They screw up the customers.

I've used H&R Block for several years. I went in to do my taxes for 2016. It took 30 minutes tops, and that was because the rep made mistakes. The charge was just under $500.00. I don't have a problem paying for a service, but that was excessive charge. I had my letter of exemption from the affordable care act. They still were charging me because I had an exemption. My taxes were the simplest you can have. No deduction, or any complicated accounting. I will not be returning for any business, my 2017 taxes will be very complicated. I expect them to charge me a couple of thousand just to file. Not good business. I have been telling everyone I can.

I have been using H&R Block for years, and I usually get my refunds sent to me via check. However, this year I decided to use their Emerald Card, and that was a major mistake. First, they never gave me a copy of the full cardholder agreement. If they had done so, I would have opted to get my refund in a different manner. Secondly, after leaving their office, I went home and created an H&R Block account, so I could track the deposit of my refund into the Emerald Card. When I setup the account, and changed the PIN on my card, I downloaded the Cardholder Agreement and read it. That is when I had an issue. The fees for transactions are high if you do not use their two ATM providers, or use it in a POS transaction. To get my full amount of funds, it states in Section 5-C, last sentence that I can request a check or a one-time ACH transfer.
I called the phone number in the agreement to discuss this with them, and that is when it went from disappoint to rage. After calling them 3 times, I was transferred to a Supervisor, which was to take my call within 5 minutes, but the sum of wait time was almost 3 hours for three calls! I never got to speak with a Supervisor, and I finally gave up. All I wanted to know was why would it take 3 business days for an ACH transfer, and I still don't have their reason because I gave up waiting. Bottom line, the tier 1 folks I spoke with were decent, respectful, and patient, but the transfer to a Supervisor is a complete business process failure.
My recommendation is take your refunds using other means, but do not under any circumstances use their Emerald Card option. You will pay a $35 if you take this card to your bank, and get the cash out. Like I said, in the office, they don't fully disclose everything, so I was enraged to find out I was going to have to pay another FEE! They had already tapped me good with fees, and this was just too much to bear after all the fees I had to pay. Beware of the Emerald Card! There are many fees you will need to discover, but it is after you have walked out of the office!

I have truly never been as disgusted with a company as I am with H&R Block. I had to explain to the incompetent tax preparer what form to use to write-off my solar (she said she had never heard of someone being able to write-off their solar). This started my unfortunate 2nd year in a row with H&R Block. I always try to give folks a second chance therefore starting my downward spiral of BS and fees and charges all hidden behind the only 39.95 fee. Did anyone know that all those normal forms that we child care expenses things like that well they are all charged for. Anywhere from 25$-45$ for each click of their mouse that auto fills in the form with all your info from the last one. However you’re still charged for every form. Even the ones they don't know how properly submit and have to keep going back to.
The lady assisting me (I won't say doing my taxes considering I was the one doing all the work looking up the forms because she didn't know anything (no BS) about what to include other than the basic W2) had to keep asking other co-workers for assistance… and she was there for 4 years already… 4 years of tax prepping. Hmm how many people have money out there they don't know about cuz this lady did their taxes.
I had held off on completing my taxes until just today, however my tax lady had been in contact and told me to come in and complete them. I told her I would, but she never told me the fees go up after a certain day. Shocker more money… I finally went today. Completed them and after all is said and done it costs me 450$ to do my taxes. The original fee was about 160$ but all the forms that had to be individually charged was 185$ then there's the peace of mind charge which covers you for 3 years. I asked, “Well can the IRS come after you after the 3 years” and she said yes. I said, “Well why does it only cover 3 years” then she said, “If you ask they might cover you”. I said, “Why did you say might it's a yes or no”. And she switched the subject. She then went over the fees again.
This is the 2nd and last time I will ever use this joke of a tax preparation place. I don't believe they even have to have more than a few weeks of school. They charge way too much. Just one more company that takes advantage of good hardworking Americans. You can't get ahead with these people because they don't feel bad ripping people off with their mediocre service. If I'm gonna pay that amount I'm gonna go to an actual certified professional. They will be worth the money. H&R Block fees get bigger and bigger every year and the quality of service and their customer service gets worse and worse. Use them at your own risk. They will screw you too, and all while mocking you and talking about you while you’re not there. Yes this happened while I sat in the waiting area. They talked about another customer. Good luck to you. I will not be seeing H&R Block again. I wish I could shoot this review to every review site available.

Was attempting to prepare my taxes myself and ran into an issue trying to determine which form to file concerning real estate that I owned for 1.5 years. Could not figure out what form to use on the IRS website so made an appointment at a commercial tax preparer since there were only 8 days left before filing deadline. The preparer was pleasant but at the end I was asked whether I wanted a protection plan for additional fees (why would you need a protection plan, company and its preparers should stand by their work product without the additional fee gimmick). Then we got to the end and the fee for preparation was $300.
Had I known in advance I certainly would have gone to someone else (an independent, non-commercial firm like I usually do). Previously, I have paid various preparers between $75-125 which I find reasonable for preparation of my taxes that are not complex. When asked about how the fee was calculated, I was told it was because of the forms used. Not to mention, I received no refund from overpayment. Ridiculous waste of money.

This was an added charge they told me off right away in the system. My total bill was about $70 which is reasonable. I asked her flat out if there were any more charges after reading reviews here. The answer was no and she was truthful. She did a very good job checking things over and trying to find me additional credits (there weren't any). My only problem was with the IT department trying to help me upload documents on my phone. They speak a whole other language they claim is English. I went into H&R Block to file my taxes, I also had to file my previous years as well. I knew going in I would be having to pay a bit more as I was filing for 2 years' worth but never in a million yrs would I have thought I would have to pay $335 just for them to do my taxes. As it turns out I paid $167 for each year I only had 1 T4 and my RRSP to claim and 1 T4, RRSP and an EI T4 for 2016. This is absolutely outrageous to charge people that amount. I also learned there is a required amount you have to get for your refund to qualify for the cash back which meant I had to come up with the money right then and there. Why is there a minimum amount? I would get it if I was only getting $30 or something but I didn't quite make the $600 minimum you have to be getting back. I brought in my tax return. It was a fairly straightforward return except for a Social Security lump sum payment. She completed my return, we signed and paid and PURCHASED Piece of Mind. We left with Good news as we were told we would receive 2400$ back. We immediately purchased a ticket for my husband to see family. Thus, begins the nightmare! We were called about 8 hours later and told there was a small mistake on our tax return and could we bring in the return right away. We did so. They assured us they would get right back to us. I called a few hours later and given no information and told we would be contacted.
The next morning my husband went in at opening. We were told manager is out and someone was working on our taxes. My husband stated he has purchased an airline ticket based on our signing off on our refund. They appeared very nervous and said they would reimburse us for the airline ticket. This was the beginning of a month of no information, refusing to return phone calls and being conveniently out of the office! I was physically ill during this whole ordeal.
Finally, not receiving in information, I went to the IRS. They looked through my taxes and told me some of what they had tried to do. I took some information to H&R Block on a Monday (3 weeks after initial tax preparation). I was PROMISED a phone call by the end of the day or the next day... NOTHING for another week. Finally, another 8 days later we went in. The MISTAKE was NOT 2400$ back but we owe 9000$!!! To make matters worse, they are refusing to refund our original amount we paid them and the airline ticket. This needs to be resolved. I will go to court. At the VERY LEAST, I should be refunded 600$ for preparation fee and airline ticket. They continue to evade and not hold themselves accountable.

We had taxes done last year by H&R for the first time. I had screwed up and ended up having to file an amended return as well. This I knew would cost a bit more, but did not know it was going to total $350 for it. Yes, I am self-employed (by 2 companies only) so not too difficult? I supply a computer printout (4 pages) subtotaled in all categories for ease. And yes my wife's W-2 as well. But still an outrage amount!
So I went back this year thinking without the amended it would be fine and not as bad for the cost? I was really wrong! This year the cost was $444.00 for not much more than a simple return form. Did I ask why the increase and so much? I was told by the Manager that it was "not " based on any set fee schedule of what they do! And after all, I was using their best employee for taxes! Which I took up less than 1/2 hour of their time. He said that no matter what the services, self-employed forms start at $300. I thought he had said there are no set fees??? I have talked to many friends with their own business and they are paying $250-$300 for a much more involved service than I used. H&R are crooks that will keep taking more if you let them!

H&R Block prepared our Federal and State tax returns for 2015 in February 2016. They made an error by not bringing forward depreciation amounts from Form 4562. This error amounted to $1500.00 in a refund. They also left out the depreciation schedule from our tax return copy. We had to request the missing depreciation schedule and notified H&R Block of their error. They agreed to prepare an amended return but refused to refund $700.00 which we had paid for tax preparation. They claimed the error had to be discovered within the same year of preparation.
I explained the error couldn't have been found because they had left out the entire depreciation schedule. I inquired if the error was in their system then how many other people had suffered from this same mistake and if H&R Block was planning to do an audit to correct all their mistakes. All they would say was that the problem had been corrected. I just want to warn people that H&R Block does not prepare accurate returns and does not stand behind their guarantee.

My mother, who is 80, went to see a "senior tax analyst" at H&R Block for a simple return. Her income is from social security and she also has some small stocks and bonds. A financial person manages her bonds, which she did not take money from in 2016 and her stock makes about $38 per quarter. She is on a very tight budget - her living expenses exceed what she brings in. The analyst told her the finance guy was cheating her and that she was going to call the police to report him - the man is on the up and up and she had no grounds for making such a statement. During mom's visit the analyst and another person at H&R Block kept talking behind her back - The one employee saying to the analyst "I don't think you can do that." The analyst told the other employee that "it says I can". She treated my mother like she was an idiot. MY MOM WILL NOT BE GETTING A DIME BACK.
The analyst then proceeded to charge her $300 for the return. Last year (2015) the same H&R Block office charged her $100 for a joint return with my father. This year she filed a single return and also had a loss in income since my father has passed away. My mom almost broke down in tears. She does not have that kind of money. The woman even pulled the check right out of my mother's hand before she could finish filling it out. I think it's deplorable to charge seniors such outrageous fees, especially when they aren't getting anything back. I just had my return done and it cost me $150.00 for an itemized return - mortgage, college credit, stocks, donations, etc. My son's return was also included in that fee. How does H&R Block get away with charging so much, especially when they have no clue what they are doing. Employees are poorly trained and don't carry the skills necessary to guarantee the maximum refund due their clients. SHAME ON YOU!

My wife and I had our income taxes done in Knoxville, TN at H&R Block in 2015 for our 2014 income taxes. We bought the "Peace of Mind" item from them that they pay any interest or penalty for any mistakes that they make. Good thing we paid $40 for the "Peace of Mind" because we got a letter from the IRS saying we owed the the IRS around $700. We contacted H&R Block and they made good on the Peace of Mind, where they paid interest and penalties and we paid what we owed.
Today we just had our 2016 income taxes done at H&R Block. We took in all of our paperwork in with our deductions. We asked the tax preparer if she thought we could itemize. She said, "I don't know. We will take a look." When she was done with her computations she told us that we did not have enough deductions to itemize, but she still filled out a 1040 form which is the LONG FORM. I thought she would go ahead and fill out a 1040EZ short form but she used the long form to file and we took the standard deduction. The tax preparer asked if we wanted to buy the "Peace of Mind" program again for $40 and we said yes, because they had made a mistake on our 2014 taxes, and made good on it with the Peace of Mind when the IRS contacted us and told us we owed them more money.
The total bill was $314.00, minus the $40 for the "Peace of Mind" plan. So minus the $40 for that, our total for just the 1040 form was $274. I about crapped my pants when I heard that figure. I said, "I thought you said that we couldn't file the long form. Why are we being charged $274 when you could have filled out a 1040EZ form (the short form)?" She said, "Prices have increased since last year." We will not be going back to H&R Block again to do future taxes. $274 is way too much to pay for tax preparation when we couldn't itemize. She should have filled out a 1040EZ form for us and not charged us for the 1040 filing. I am going to call and file a complaint tomorrow but I doubt I will get anywhere. I will not be using them in the future. I am going to look for a CPA next year to do my income tax filing.

When I tried to E-File my federal return, H&R Block claims filing blocked due to incorrect PAYER's federal ID # for National Financial Services, the arm of Fidelity Investments that sends out its disbursements - by the millions. The number was NOT incorrect per the 1099-R and per Fidelity, and Fidelity says if it were wrong, millions of E-file attempts would also have failed. If the IRS, on its part, had the wrong number, the same millions or returns would have been rejected. Fidelity has heard of no such phenomenon taking place. That leaves HRB and its totally clueless "customer support," whose advise was, since their software didn't work to file electronically, that I should not file electronically - what I paid them to achieve.
And the software is clumsy slow and does not, in fact, allow preparation of the state return without paying $19.95 more. How so? E-filing of the state return calls for an added $19.95 fee. If you decide not to pay the extra to E-file state return, the software wipes out the state return so you have to do it from scratch outside the software. So HRB is incompetent and a pack of liars.

I believe the United States is not run by a dictator and if I choose to file by paper, I can and in the future, I will. I was not able to go to another company because of my student discount would show already used and H&R Block was the one it was claimed on. Since 2010 my husband and I pay $500 back for the first time home buyers program. H&R block charged us an extra $33. But no explanation of why! And charged $34 for bump up just for one paper. I have had to call the IRS because my taxes are being researched and only thing I can see is that when submitted the information of my husband and I was flipped!
H&R rep said probably glitch in system and I just have to wait on the IRS. He did ask me how I submitted taxes on 2/23/17 but was received by IRS on 2/22/17! I want my money back for the processing because they are not helping me at all to find out what is going on with my taxes. I am told that once submitted they have no control. IRS told me there was 4 other people in one day with similar issues. What do that have to do with me? I really wanted to get up and leave, but like a fool I stayed there. Now I purchase the peace of mind and was told if anything happen H&R Block will do all my paperwork and I won't have to worried about anything. Well lies. I have to pay $25.00 dollars to them just to release a form that the IRS need to have in 20 days. IRS send me a letter to get a form fill out and h&r block did fill it out and because I did not have a copy of my daughter insurance at the time my taxes were being prepared I have to pay $25.00, when I paid 39.95 for the peace of mind.
Next year I will not go to H&R Block never again. I see on here a lot of negative reviews about H and R Block and their advance and emerald card. I've been using h and r since the year 2000 so its been 16 years now. I will agree they are a little pricey however all the benefits I receive are worth it. I see everyone is having nothing but problems, since 2000 I have always qualified for the advance. For a matter of fact up until like 2008 I would go in file my taxes at say 5 pm and leave and by 530pm I'd have my whole return of say $7000-$8000 on my card that fast. Then there was a change where they couldn't do same day.
Anyway the other benefit is every November they would give me $1000 advance that I could use for Xmas that I've been getting since my 2nd year from 2001 all the way through this year 2016. Now this year anyone with dependents had to wait longer so not only did they give me my $1000 in November but also offered me another $1800.00 advance when I filed my taxes which went in my emerald card so fast it was on before I even got out of the office. So simply put I feel h and r block and the emerald card is 100% perfect and have never had an issue.
The only thing I can think that would cause people to be denied is any red flag that makes them feel you could have a problem with your taxes, maybe a possible student loan balance, child support or just maybe it was your first time. They use a very weird way of determining who they offer them to. Any possible chance of someone garnishing your taxes at all even if you're certain of they're not they will deny it and credit doesn't mean anything cause there were several years my credit was bad before it was good. And never once did I have to make one payment. They took their money when my return came in and that was that. As a matter of fact I can pull an advance in July if I want to. It doesn't matter cause they know every year I will get $8500 back so they always get paid. So I'm sorry for those that had issues but trust me when I say this - they wanna help everyone so if they denied you then you somewhere along the way had a red flag pop up.

So I can create an account, but for some reason H&R Block thinks the bulk of security recommendations online to use a password safe is wrong, and that you should instead use a small, simple password, that is not complex, easy to remember, and more importantly easy for bad hackers to break and steal things like your social security number. I have been a loyal user of H&R Block's online tax preparation service for some 15 years now. It always bothered me a bit that they would start out quoting one price for their service and then right at the end they hit you with an additional fee even higher than the starting one in order to file your state return. Still the service seemed worth the $75 I had paid at most up until this year. Well this year they were advertising $29.99 for H&R Block Plus and it clearly states 'State return is FREE'. Although I was a bit skeptical about this, I could not imagine that they would outright lie about it. So a good ways into the process they hit me with a $50 fee just because I have a 1099B to enter as if this made their software work any harder. But I figured that since the State return was free it only came to $5 more than before. So I go ahead and take the time to complete my Federal return, pay for it and file.
Then I move onto the State return and lo and behold I get hit with a fee for $39.95 to 'file' it. So just because they created it in their system before charging for it I guess they figured they didn't actually lie to their customers about it being FREE, it is just a fee to 'file' it. Well this is just a dishonest semantic game that is unethical as far as I'm concerned and I won't do further business with such an ethically challenged company.

H&R Block, Clinton, TN. (Tanner Lane) - I have been going to H&R Block for years and years and I have decided to never go back because they have went downhill badly. I had my taxes done this year, the woman that did them was very friendly and helpful, and I was seen almost immediately and was surprised by this because there were several people waiting to be seen. I paid my fee of $120.00 and went on my way. The problem began when I returned approximately a month later with some questions. There was one man in the lobby waiting to be seen and I stood at the desk waiting on someone to help me for a very long time. Finally, when the woman came up front from what looked like the breakroom area, she rolled her eyes making numerous faces like I was wasting her time. She then told me that she would write a letter to the IRS on my behalf and contact me when she gets it done so that I could send it in the mail to them.
I've been waiting on that call for quite some time and I'm not holding my breath. This is not the first time that I have talked with this woman about my tax situations. I had some questions that I asked her last year and received the same huffy attitude but just dismissed it then thinking she was having a bad day. Bottom line is: She may know how to do taxes and do them well but, the bottom line is, if you're going to be in customer service don't roll your eyes, huff/blow, and roll your eyes like you are better than the person that paid you $120.00 to have their taxes done.

Being that I had a lot going on this past year, I knew that tax season was going to be a bit difficult to figure out on my own. I had three different states that I was associated with, was a student for half the year, and now work in New York but live in New Jersey. Needless to say it was a daunting task. So, I sought out professional help and unfortunately landed on H&R Block.
To be honest the appointment itself was not all that terrible. I was annoyed at the fact that I had to help her figure out some things within the program she was inputting information to but overall I wasn't totally turned off. I'm usually pretty forgiving having worked with difficult populations and a wide array of people. However, when I was told about the price I nearly fell out of my chair. "So your total is $291 today, you know because of the extra state."
She said it so calmly and as if it was not big deal at all, just more than the amount I was to get back is all and for mediocre work AT BEST. That is when everything started to annoy me. I thought back on all the little mistakes she had made, the attitude I had received for a minute while she tried to compose herself, and later found missing information that might have impacted the amount of money. They swindled me and they did a damned good job of it. It was a job I could've easily done myself as she was using a program with the same software that I had previously used. I am angry with myself as well as this company for the egregious assault of my wallet and my intelligence.

I was told they would call me back but they didn't so I called again. Same thing call me back. Finally 3 days later they tell I have to wait the full 8 weeks before they can tell me anything. Well needless to say we are going on 9 weeks & all they can say is there's a glitch in the e-file system & there's 5 or 6 others this is happening to & they keep saying they are working on it & the site to check. The status still says no record!
I feel like I'm not getting the exact reasoning for this & when I ask when I would get my fees back since they messed something up they say they are working on it! I MEAN REALLY HOW LONG IS IT GONNA TAKE? THEY BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR LIKE 3 WEEKS NOW. Hello I think they need to give me some answers & get my fees $ back to me like yesterday! I have been a customer there for 16 years & this will definitely be my last! H&R Block you need to get your crap together & get me my money!!!

I've had my taxes prepared and filed by H&R Block for many years. I am elderly, and physically disabled. On March 13, 2017, the tax preparer at the 567 Golden Gate Avenue office in San Francisco suggested I use my debit card to pay for my taxes, even though I had pulled out a check from my wallet, and placed it on his desk. I informed the preparer that I wanted to pay the entire amount that same day, and had more than enough funds in my account. I told him H&R Block normally processes an electronic payment via my check; either that, or, they give me pre-addressed envelopes for the State Franchise Tax Board and the IRS for me to mail with my check later. Taxes are not due until April 18.
He acted confused by this information, and suggested I use a debit card. He did not disclose to me that my debit card could be run either as a debit or a credit card (he only mentioned debit), or, that my card would go through a third party payment processing company (payUSA tax), or, that the third party company levies fees on the card. It turned out these fees are $2.68 for a debit card, or 1.9 percent of the total amount owed the IRS for a credit card. He never discussed with me running my card as a credit card, and I never gave any permission for this whatsoever. Nor did I even realize that this was a possibility. He never discussed or showed me any paperwork about any fees associated with allowing H&R Block to use my debit card to submit my payment to the IRS. When he submitted my debit card, he submitted it as a credit card, not a debit card. This tacked a whopping $343.04 "convenience charge" onto my tax bill.
Without my authorization, the bill went from $17,325 to $17,668.04 in a matter of a few seconds. I was shocked and upset, and immediately demanded that this unauthorized "convenience fee" be blocked. He said it was too late. The IRS already had my $17,668.04. I then asked H&R Block to refund it. The area manager would not allow this. What followed was an exhausting, futile 5 and a half hours which I was forced to spend in the H&R Block offices attempting to get my bank to remove the charge by phone, attempting to get through to the IRS to block the charge, and attempting to get H&R Block to honor their infamous "Peace of Mind" agreement, and refund my money which was lost as a result of their error.
I even went to the bank in person with the H&R office manager late in the day to plead my case. At that point, feeling so confused, fatigued, and weak that I could not think straight, and the office manager had to do most of the talking for me. The tax preparer who submitted my debit card first acted shocked when he saw the huge surcharge. Minutes later, he admitted that he had heard that this same thing happened to a customer in the branch a year earlier. He said that person lost $500 plus, spent many weeks haggling to try to get the money refunded, but he didn't know if it ever was refunded?
My bank (Chase) is investigating whether or not to take this charge off my account. It has not yet agreed to permanently remove this overcharge. The state owes me a $700 plus refund on my state tax return this year. Unbelievably, after subjecting me to a day of hell in their office, with more hassles yet to come as I continue to deal with my bank over this, the H&R Block area manager demanded that I pay my tax preparation fee upfront, or they would not submit my completed state tax return, even though I had just been robbed of $343 due to H&R Block's action. They have still not submitted my state return. More frustrating talks with rude, unbelievably arrogant and condescending male H&R Block employees followed during the week, each one of these calls leaving me even more upset and shaken up.
I have asked the district manager of H&R Block to refund the undisclosed $343.04 surcharge which they owe me, and to do my taxes for free this year, given the torment I've been subjected to. He refuses to take responsibility, is trying to say H&R Block did not put me under stress that day, and is even trying to partly blame me for the bogus use of my debit card as a credit card which incurred these huge "convenience" fees. At one point, he told me he was from the "corporate" level of the company which is not true. I will now have to file a customer complaint with the real corporate H&R Block office in Kansas City to get this matter bumped up to the corporate level due to the lack of cooperation locally and regionally.
I have already spent precious hours of my personal time filing a Yelp review, Better Business Bureau complaint, and Federal Trade Commission complaint to try to get this resolved, and to hopefully help prevent other customers from unknowingly being hit with hidden, unauthorized charges which H&R Block won't refund. I have written proof of this interaction (receipt) which I am happy to show any investigatory agency. But, for obvious security reasons, I will not include it online since it involves my personal tax return.
I think this matter needs to be investigated as it was deceptive, and H&R Block has not acted with integrity to honor their highly publicized commitments to the public. It may be part of a wider problem, or even some type of sham or kickback scheme, or it may have been a simple mistake? I don't know. But, given H&R Block's inappropriate handling of my complaint thus far, and their history, I am highly suspicious. In 2009, the Ca. State Attorney General resolved a multimillion dollar lawsuit against H&R Block for unsavory business practices.

The people at the H&R Block store thought it was a big joke and talked and gossiped about incompetent the girl that did the taxes was. If the Taxes had been filed correctly nothing would be owed. I consulted an attorney and he said that there is nothing that we can do that even though they were wrong the IRS looks at it as it is our responsibility to know. On top of doing them wrong they charged $609. Even the lawyer I talked to said "WHAT!!! That outrageous". They offered to refund $100 since they were wrong. Do not go to them. They are immoral unethical and don't care.

We complained to the manager who was rude unresponsive to phone calls and just evil. H&R claims was worse! Before making my appointment I checked online to see what it would cost and at the high range it said $125. I went in with all my papers... including my deductions. She never even went through my paperwork to make sure my addition was correct; just took my number at face value. I was there for an hour longer than I was supposed to be because she kept getting interrupted by a co-worker as well as getting confused in what she was doing with my taxes. At the end of the service she saw the price and kept saying "Wow, that's high. Why is it so high? " They charged me $520 AFTER TAKING OFF $100!
I called to complain the next day... was sent into an investigation. I called back the next day after receiving an email saying it was settled; they apparently told the headquarters that they called and had me come in... LIE! So he sent me to the regional manager. He called me and told me that it was the correct amount and that it's competitively priced!!! What a joke! I have never NEVER paid more than $120!!! I'm absolutely disgusted!!! Hello. I just wanted to follow up on my status. I'm not asking for $10,000 or taking H&R Block to small claim court. What I want is the $5,000 from your Peace of Mind program. I don't feel I have been treated fairly by the H&R Block office. They did my taxes is 2014 and told me all was well. About a year later I decided that I would have them checked at a cost of $3000.00. The result was the taxes were not done correctly and instead of me owing money, the IRS owed me a considerable refund.
Once I had my new CPA team resubmit the taxes I received a refund from the state and now must pay for an audit from the IRS. H&R block returned the amount to do my refund, but did not give me the $5000 from the Peace of Mind that I paid for. I'm a disabled unemployed veteran and want to be treated fairly. My only recourse is to make sure anyone that uses this office knows what happened to me. I plan passing out a note to at least 20 cars a day until the tax season is over. I also plan on created a blog about my experience with H&R Block.

Had to fill out some more papers and mail them off to the right people. Also I had to file a police report. I also had to change the money to go to my bank account to a Green Dot card.
The next day I was looking over my tax papers and discovered my SS number was put in wrong. Went back to H&R Block to let them know what I had found. She went back in to my file and changed the SS number to the right number. My first Green Dot card was linked to the wrong SS number. Went back up to the H&R Block and let them know what was going on. I finally had to call the number on back of the card and explain again to the guy what was going on. Finally I got the money to go to the second card after taking time out of work to get it right. Now I have to wait 1 to 5 extra days to get my money. I will never go to H&R Block again. My 2015 return had to be mailed in, Pat said she would prepare everything, she even put it in the envelope sealed it and told me all I need to do is put a stamp on it and take it to the post office. That's exactly what I did. Two weeks later the letter came back to me. She put my copies (Clients Copies) in the envelope and did not have me sign the return. I had to sign it and send it back. I filed January 19th. I still have not received my 2015 state return, due to the incompetence of H&R Block's Tax Preparer.

I work in the Downtown core and went to the H&R on university and Wellington. I explained numerous times that I only had one hour as I had to get back to work and was told that it would not take longer. I was in there for 1.5 hours only after I decided to leave! The whole process should have been simple. I have only T4's as am still setting up home in Toronto so my financial history is pretty simple. Yet nothing was explained clearly and I was informed that even though I am not a resident of Canada I was being filed under 'resident status' why I am still not sure, as the woman who filed my return could not even properly explain it to me herself! She dragged everything out in the longest way possible and could not answer any of my questions clearly OR explain anything properly!
She left out details, kept having to check with her colleague that what she was doing was correct and seemed annoyed that I was not engaging in conversation with her! (I was working from my phone). Overall my experience was extremely dissatisfying and hugely unprofessional and I would highly recommend anyone who is considering using H&R Block to file your return to look elsewhere. Well long story short on the 24th they took my whole paycheck to pay the Advance instead of my tax return that I still haven't received yet. I also requested to not have automatic withdrawals for this reason to make payments on it but nonetheless they still took it without any warning. It took me 20 calls to get someone that spoke to where I could understand them and several times they sent me to a supervisor that never answered. She said the cost was minimal, I'd have the money quick and have plenty of time to complete my taxes and pay back. The money was available quick everything else was lies. Out of $900 advance I received $819 which cost me $23 a month in interest for four months until I realized what was happening. So out of the $900 advance 45+ dollars was kept in fees and an alleged first payment that she said would be paid on my behalf while I was out of the country.
Good thing I checked because it was never paid and the money just disappeared. I received 819 and this cost me an additional hundred dollars in interest in just four months!!! Not to mention the end of term was February 15 to which she never told me. In fact she implied there was no end as long as I made the minimum monthly payment the card would just keep on and on, and when the line was paid back the money would be available again and again every year. Deliberate misinformation or ignorance I don't know which one.
Needless to say I do not recommend this as any kind of financial help unless you are homeless and destitute!! The incompetency of the tax preparer in being well-versed in the product she was selling is astounding. When calling the Emerald card to try to resolve these issues I spent a total of two hours and 14 minutes being transferred to six different people, two different supervisors, a phone that rang 87 times before disconnecting me, before I finally got to a person who just wanted to explain the financial breakdown so I broke down and just paid the thing off to be done with it. The entire experience summed up in the word would be: deplorable.

I filed my taxes today at a branch in Red Deer Alberta. 107 4711 51 Ave. I have never been so appalled and outraged in my life. I worked at a adult store and in a office over this past year. When I was asked what the one company was I responded with the name of the adult store. The person doing my taxes proceeded to ask inappropriate questions on how things "fit" and that if he worked there he would demand pictures. This went on for some time and I was so uncomfortable I couldn't merit a response. At one point he insinuated through my other job that I get paid through sexual acts. On top of making me extremely uncomfortable I was informed that I owe money this year (which I know for a fact to be incorrect so I will be having them redone elsewhere but I did not realize one of my employers sent me a incorrect T4). At this point I was very upset so I was told I should go to my shop to "relax".
He also informed me that CRA demanded I do my taxes, which I was never informed of and that I had not filed for 2006. I did file my 2006 at a H&R. I do not appreciate inaccurate information. I feel violated and strongly believe this man should not be working in a public environment. I will never again do my taxes at a H&R block. I will also be informing my friends and family to not go to this branch and if anyone is reading this I highly suggest you do the same.

I had been using H&R block for years till I started using other tax preparation services online for free. I decided to take the hit this year for the advance from H&R after reading their website that it was going to use my return as the ability to loan money on the expected return with plenty of return I figured I would get the advance no problem. Nope. This is just a last effort of a fading company to rip off people for a high fee charge for something you can do for yourself online for free with the idea that you could get a advance if you need or want it. Of course after being denied I looked up H&R scam to find lots off people done the same way. Just so they know when your scam is obvious to all those you pull it on they won't be back. Don't go to H&R. They won't give you advance even if they would get it back guaranteed just so they can get you with one more high fee. Just a blockbuster/circuit city of tax preparation.

GOODBYE H&R Block - HELLO TURBOTAX FREE. Have been going to H&R Block for years, but I'm done. I tried the free online software to save the unnecessary $300.00 in tax pro fees, yet somehow every which way you turn in their software there are fees, delays and misinformation! I even use my emerald card as an account for bills, and wasn't offered the option to load my taxes to my EXISTING card. Spent half the day on chat with (ha!) tech support only to be hung up on once because the issue was over the techs head, but then the next one really tried and finally came up with, "Sorry we don't know why".
'Free' online filing is not really free, it was going to cost us nearly as much using the 'free' software, and I AM DOING ALL THE WORK! I was forced to add "Best of Both" because our situation requires a form they don't provide online. I've been trying to do our taxes since 02/17! I waited four days for the "best of both pro" to review my taxes, and when they (finally) did, they added ANOTHER fee. I bailed out and used TURBOTAX FREE. It took me an hour and a half, and I've submitted my taxes, done and filed even with the form H&R Block was going to charge for! And held up my filing for while I waited in H&R Block "Best of Both" PURGATORY! It is FREE with TURBOTAX.

I concluded that if I do end up getting penalized 600 dollars for not having insurance I going end up owing H&R Block money because it won't be enough left after that deduction.
Don't go to these people. I use to get charged most 70 dollars for 5 w2 forms. The only difference this year was I was penalize for using 401 money which I didn't ask to be pull out. 3 forms of w2 and that's it. And a 401k. I only made 16,000 dollars because I got injured at the job site and been put out of commission till I fully heal. I asked the guy if I was charged by the minute. 264 dollars can you believe. Here's the situation. My wife is employed fulltime, and a loyal Block user for 14 years. I am on disability. So, thus begins the mess. My wife got a call in mid January that H&R Block's automated system had set up an appointment for us without even them knowing it. Okay fine, she had her W2, so we went in, though I KNEW we didn't have the right form for me. We got everything started, and I asked about filing separate because I know I have old student loan issues. Last year they tried to hit my wife for them, so we filed an Injured Spouse form. So this year I wanted to try filing separate to protect her return. Yeah. The rep was insistent that if we did it that way I would have to pay (which is bull as my SSDI is nontaxable). Fine, rather than fight about it I gave in. I wish I hadn't.
Our rep insisted we file the Injured Spouse form again this year, but WITH the taxes. It wasn't till AFTER she finished working everything up that she springs on us that we suddenly have to pay our $318 filing fee in advance. Before they would even file! Thank God our landlords are easygoing because we had to put rent off to pay the stinking fee.
We were also strongly encouraged to do the advance, so we did. We were approved for $500. I wish now we had used that for rent but it went to the electric and other bills. Well, taxes were finally filed on the 2nd of February. My wife gets the EIC, so like everyone else we are trapped waiting till the 15th for a refund. Except it doesn't work that way. The Injured Spouse form delays the return even more. And do you think Block told us that it took longer if we filed it with the taxes rather than later? No they did not.
We were also told we should put our return on our Emerald card, all of it. Again, bad idea. At this point it is the end of the month. We only JUST found out our entire state refund, which we were depending on for RENT may be absorbed for that stupid advance. So now we are doubly screwed, hoping and praying they only take the advance out of federal, but I doubt it. I don't know what we are going to tell our landlords if they do take it from state. They love us and are really good about us being late, but if we miss a month, that could be a whole different story. So yeah, H&R Block has really effed us over big time here. And we have another possibly 2 MONTHS to wait for federal to come back. Thanks a whole lot **. You can bet I am going to try and convince my wife to do taxes elsewhere from now on!

The tax "professional" at H&R Block, 4541 Duke St., Alexandria, Virginia 22304 miscalculated my Federal tax refund to the tune of $5,000, the additional amount that I was due to be refunded. Incredible! The IRS discovered the error and notified me. Another incredulity. I specified queries and the above location assured me that they had someone who knew about foreign earned income. That was the primary reason that I elected to use this location and the specific employee. During my initial visit, she finally admitted that she had to do some research on the topic. Even though there was additional information that she needed that I promptly provided, I still had to wait for her to complete her research to wrap up my tax preparation. Of course, her inability to understand and apply tax law and regulation were the sole basis for her error. To add to the error, I was charged nearly $400.00 for the "service."

First time filing with H&R Block and it will be my last. I had filed here at one of the offices as I didn't understand why I wasn't receiving a big return. I should have realized from the time I stepped in the door there were going to be problems. The name they had down for my appointment was completely wrong (even after I had spelled it out for the rep over the phone). As I provided the tax preparer my info she herself even spelled my name wrong as well as provided the wrong bank information to where my return is to go to. I however did not catch this til later that night when I went over the information with my fiance. I called the tax preparer the next day to inform her that the direct deposit information was wrong. She told me that once the forms are sent there is nothing she can do. To call my bank which my bank stated that they can not do anything but that the refund would be rejected.
I was then recommended to call customer service to see if maybe they could help. So for 3 days now I have been told that since my refund has not been sent out I can fix the direct deposit that they would have to transfer me. I get transferred all to be told that I need to fill out a form that will change the direct deposit but need to get the form the IRS. So go to the IRS who tell me that I need to make an appointment. I call customer service who says, "Well let's see if we can just have your refund go on an Emerald Card.
Again get transferred to being told, "Oh you have to go to a H&R Block Store to get the card." 2 hrs into this ring around and still nothing fixed so I do this call the customer service line again to then be transferred another 6 times to this same department that says they can't help me. 4 hours later still nothing has been fixed. I'm still waiting for the District manager to call me, as well as a claim specialist because I am asking for a refund. I will never ever file my taxes through H&R Block nor will I ever recommend them!!!

Pros - Convenient location, online appointment scheduling, tax preparer was an on time, friendly, didn't feel rushed. Cons - Pricing is my only, but major complaint. I used to use a personal accountant. Due to unemployment and medical bills, I decided to go with H&R to try to save money. In reading their site, a basic tax prep would be around $200. I was charged close to $500! My accountant used to charge me $400 and he did both my personal AND business tax returns.
When I complained and asked why the preparer told me it was because I had to file a business form for a 3-day contract job I did. They paid me on a 1099 instead of a W2. H&R charged me a little over $100 for this one form alone. I argued saying that she literally had to type in 3 sets of figures into an online form. That is really all she did. I pushed, she relented and lowered it by about $65. This was still $100 the fee I was charged from my accountant.
I find it ridiculous that it costs so much more than hiring a private CPA. If I was aware of their charges ahead of time, I would have never used them. I did ask prior, but was told they can't determine that until they see my paperwork. Sorry, they've been doing this for decades, they know what it costs for a basic return. Companies such as these should be required to provide an itemized price list BEFORE any work is done. I'll never use them again.

I have been using H&R Block over the past 3 years from 2014 to 2017. I have never in all my life sat in an H&R Block for more than an hour. Never has that happened. Well, that all changed when on February 8th, 2017 I went there and was partnered with Mr. Thomas **. My GOD! He wouldn't stop talking and DO MY FRIGGIN TAXES! Now, I have nothing against people who support Trump, but don't talk about it when you're doing my taxes! In fact, you don't talk about TWO THINGS IN THIS WORLD: RELIGION AND POLITICS.
Now, I wholeheartedly understand that conversation is a must when we are sitting in front of each other for 45 minutes minimum. It'd get pretty awkward if we're just sitting in complete silence for that time. He, as a tax professional, has to strike up conversation with the taxpayer in order to make them feel comfortable. However, this reached the point of absurdity. He could not spell "graduate" and when he talked about a subject he just stopped filing my taxes and turned his torso away from the computer, taking his hands off of the keyboard. Whenever he did this, my taxes were not getting completed. It's not like I had three thousand W2's, a house, an itemized deduction list, a spouse, or any of that. I had two W2s (I just started another job at the tail end of 2016), my VA tax exemption letter, and my 1098-T. Four pieces of paper took two hours to complete!
What's even more bizarre is that Mr. ** attempted to trick me with that Emerald Card nonsense. Never have I used the Emerald Card for an advance or anything. I don't need it. Mr. ** had tried to click the "Accept" key on the Emerald Card. I had to clarify that I did not want that service. He then told me that by pressing "Accept", I would really be declining the offer.
I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything here, however, I am a pretty educated young man. It doesn't take a nuclear physicist to know that "Accept" means confirming, and "Decline" means rejecting. Mr. ** tried to pull one over on me, which is a shameful thing to do. I have no idea what he was trying to accomplish by trying to get me on that Emerald Card. Not to mention, H&R Block charges you for putting money in your own personal bank account, however, the price went UP from last year!! Why?! Did inflation really go up that much in a year? Ridiculous.
With the uncomfortable conversations, the employee who moved like molasses running uphill in January, thousands of hidden fees and charges, their goal to push this "Emerald Card" nonsense, and their lack of any profession ability, I will be using TurboTax next year, thank you very much. I can spend the $55 on TurboTax 2017 and have done with it. I can get my taxes done early and on my terms without hidden fees and slow employees who talk about uncomfortable subjects. It was $100 just to get my taxes done. I can slash that in half next year.

I was in default last year but still got my taxes thanks to my NetSpend card and liberty tax point being my refund was sent to the bank on the 8th and when they didn't deliver they got chewed out.
The messed up part is I have nothing to start my year off right. I was on probation period for a whole year at whole foods meaning I couldn't call off or be late. My refund was 1218.88 but I wanted an advance to pay a bill. When I got done paying H&R Block for the very unnecessary tax preparation, I only had 900 bucks. You need 1000 for the advance. I called the lady that did them, she said "Oh, don't worry. They are not taxable". I told her that they had always been added to my income since I had received SS. She said again, they are not taxable. So everything went fine and I got more refund than I had thought I would get.
Then in 2016 when I filed for 2015 she did the same thing. I thus got more that year. So then in June I get letter from IRS saying I owed $1400 in taxes. I went to two different H&R Block offices and they said I had to pay it. I told them it wasn't my fault and if she would have checked my return the first year she would have understood what I told her. But she put no effort into pulling it up and checking it. I have made numerous phone calls and ran to and from trying to get this solved. I paid $390.00 for $15 min. of work and lying. I am so fed up with H&R Block. I would not recommend them to anyone. I had had H&R Block do my taxes in the same office for 10 years. In 2010 I was hit by a find from Canada Revenue Agency for $6,300 I believe. The year before I had moved and my T4 slip was lost in the mail. I told the young man who did my taxes about it and he said there was no problem. Instead of a taxable income of almost #32,000 (I am retired) the only thing I could show them was a slip from my church where I do part-time work. That was for $7,000 or so. He finally came back to the desk and said he had bad news and good news. The bad news was that I wasn't getting anything back but the good news was that I didn't owe anything. I paid the filing fee of $90 and went home.
The next ensuing months was when I received word that I was being fined for not having declared my pension income. I had to take a line of credit out to pay the fine. I hand delivered at least one and perhaps 2 letters to the office and never heard anything back. It took about a year but I was able to recoup the money from the fine due to a medical exemption. My anger and upset is that I was never contacted by the company AT ALL and their papers/envelopes etc. have the promise that "...any fines levied against the filer will be paid if it is H&R Block's fault." Talk about false advertising. As I said, I got the money back but I think H&R Block needs to step up to their promises.

I've been using H&R Block for over 15 years now. The last few year I've noticed their prices have gone through the roof. Last year we went to a new office, after all was done, that's when they talked to us about how much their fee is, not before, but after everything was filed and sent. The tax prep was unprofessional and couldn't tell us a solid price. Only asked what we had paid last year and doubled it. We felt conned so this year.
Thinking we were in good hands we went back to our normal office. We told our normal tax preparer how we felt conned and robbed and ripped off. She was all smiles and sorries. She said nothing else... until again everything was filed and sent and THEN she spoke of her price... which was way more than last year and we already told the woman we felt conned and robbed, yet she said nothing until it was too late for us to say no...
We are a low income family and we got charged 600.00 to do our taxes which BTW I had everything added and itemized and rounded... Also she chose not to file a w2 we got for winning a scratch off, her, H&R Block knowingly didn't file something... Her excuse... that form would cost you $25.00 extra... and don't even get me started with the scam piece of mind... which because she didn't file the w2 we thought we should pay for that... Scammers. Get your billions back America... and give it to H&R Block:/

I have been going to H&R block for years. Last year I was told that I would be getting back around 7K as I overpay taxes. I received the deposit from CRA and lo and behold I now owe 6K back. It usually costs me around $385 a year for the person to fill in the blanks. I have a small business, therefore I give the person an excel spreadsheet with all the necessary info. It usually takes about 30 min. The issue is not the cost but the fact that I pay all this money only to be given false info as to what I am entitled to.
Apparently the person (who got fired by head office???) forgot to do the split income that I have been doing since it was first introduced. The person has all my past years data on file. H&R block apologizes and are willing to give me a free tax assessment. Really! Time to find a CPA who does this for a living and not just during tax time. Don`t believe the ads. They only guarantee interest if it isn't accurate or something.

I went into my local H&R Block to have my taxes prepared. The first question I was asked by the preparer was did anything excited happened to me last year. My answer was, "Yes, my son was born." As she goes on to prepare my taxes she comes to the end and quotes a small refund so I asked is this the amount with my son at it on there? Her response was, "I didn't know you wanted to claim your son." Surprised, I answer, "Yes I want to play my son." After a couple of questions she tells me I can't claim my son because he didn't live with me the whole year. I knew better but I let her talk me out of it knowing that she was wrong. I go home and call another office and they tell me I was right in the first place that I could claim my son so I called back and she tells me, "It's too late. It's already been sent in."
I was very upset could not believe she had done me that way. Then I get another call the next morning saying that if I would come down for 5 p.m. she would do an amendment. So I go down where do the amendment which should have never had to be done in the first place if she had done it right the first time and after charging me $90 for the first preparation she then tells me it's another $205 for the amendment which was her mistake in the first place! Please tell me why I have to pay for her mistake, not to mention I told her I wanted to file head of household and she took it upon herself to file me as single. I WILL NEVER EVER USE H&R BLOCK AGAIN!

I decided to take the tax refund advance through H&R Block to pay an insurance deductible. At the time it seemed like a good choice since we were coming up on Christmas. However, they were extremely misleading. We have been hit with hidden fees left and right. Even trying to pay it off prior to getting our return we cannot get a straight answer from the Servicing Dept. Also when on the phone the Servicing Department continued to transfer our call again and again. Finally I asked for the representative's name and ID number, and he gave me a three letter first name and refused to give me a caller ID number. When I asked to speak with a supervisor I was told none were available. I will personally never use an H&R services again.

Every year H&R Block has a new surprise fee buried in their system that you don't find until after you've paid their return preparation fee. This year the surprise was a third-party charge for using a credit card to pay your tax liability. You discover this only after you've paid for tax preparation, in anticipation of being able to file electronically. The result is that to avoid the fee, I chose to print my returns and mail a paper check to the IRS. So, the total value I got from H&R Block for $77 is the privilege of typing my return information into their website instead of a free-fillable form provided by the IRS. And this is not the first time -- so when will I learn? This year! No more H&R Block!

I just got off the phone with customer support and they confirmed that 3 weeks after the day I filed that my Colorado still has not been transmitted. I paid 442 dollars to get screwed over and lied to. What a waste of money. Tax pro, huh? I could have done the taxes myself more accurately. This is ridiculous.

First thing to think about is why was I asked to pay for "peace of mind" for an additional $40 so they'd stand behind their work? They sell a service, tax prep, and wouldn't you think that accuracy and doing it correctly would be something that is a given? So being asked to purchase this $40 peace of mind should have been a forewarning. Then I read online that most people who did purchase that, it didn't matter as H&R didn't stand behind anything because half the time the errors aren't found for a year or more later and H&R won't take responsibility anyway. So what's the point.
So backing up - I thought my taxes would be semi-easy to do as nothing had changed for years so giving them my 2014/2015 taxes should have made it pretty easy to compare and see what my old tax guy had done in the past. When I made my appointment, I asked if I could bring in a flash drive with the last two years' taxes and was told I could. I arrive for my appointment and I'm told due to security, no, I cannot give them a flash drive. Great. I had been completely misinformed. So I'm sitting there with nothing really to give them as far as my back taxes. She tells me no problem, just email them when I get home. So we go over the basics and the figures I brought in and I go home and email the back taxes. And I wait an entire day with no response.
Finally I follow up - she never got them. I try again. And again. And again. And each time I'm being told no matter how I try to send them, zipped or PDF or whatever, she isn't getting them. It's pretty obvious that once again security measures that they have don't allow anyone to email anything to them that is an attachment. And yet no one told me that. She never one time said sorry, I guess I can't get email attachments from you. I'm sure I wasn't the first person to ever try to email something to H&R. So she says bring back the flash drive, I'll put it in my personal laptop. Nice of her to offer that but again, why on earth could I not have used the H&R system? Or why was I told that I could? So back I go to the office to drop the flash drive. My frustration is mounting.
So then I get a notice that my taxes are done, they are attached. I open them and there is nothing more than a summary - you paid this, you owed this, you have this coming back. No actual forms, schedules, nothing. But yet I'm asked to approve the taxes - and by approve I'm sure that meant pay for them. I called and was told yes, I have to approve them in order to see them. What? How can I approve something I can't see? Am I supposed to be satisfied with this summary? How do I even know she got all the deductions right? So I tell her I don't get it - what am I approving?? And flat out say I'm not approving anything until I can see the forms. So again she is kind enough to apparently scan in the main forms, not the schedules, not the estimated quarterly taxes for 2017 but just the main forms and only for the federal taxes.
I'm again baffled - I still have state taxes, I still want to see my quarterly estimates and how they were arrived at. I'm not approving anything until I see a complete copy. Once again she scans in everything and emails them to me. FINALLY I get the entire set of documents. I once again have to ask, am I the only person out there that demanded to see the actual tax forms before approving or paying for them?
So I know nothing about taxes - if I did I'd do my own. My bill was going to be $500, $540 if I paid for the peace of mind. That's no small amount but I have no choice as I'm completely ignorant when it comes to taxes. But I'm looking over my forms and the first thing I see is that there is an obvious error for one of my incomes - a $10,000 error. Something that should have said $26,000 was posted as $16,000. So right there I was under-reporting my income by $10,000. Had I just signed off on the tax forms, that would have been caught eventually by the IRS and I'd have owed penalties and interest... and I guarantee you H&R wouldn't have stood behind me as they would have said I approved them, it's my fault.
And then I see yet another blunder - in my quarterly estimated payments for 2017. I had a small refund coming of $500 and I always choose to roll that over into my first quarter payment rather than get a refund. So looking at the estimated tax worksheet, I see that she transposed two numbers. In round numbers just for the sake of example - it should have said that I owed $2000 for first quarter taxes, less the $500 refund so my first quarter payment should be $1500. What it said was that $1500 was rolled over, I owed $500 for my first quarter taxes. And even in adding up the year total, it was blatant - you owe $8000 for the year, and your quarterly totals are $500, $2000, $2000 and $2000, totaling $6500. But I really do owe $8000. So on top of under-reporting $10,000 in income, had I blindly signed off on these taxes and believed what H&R told me, I would have underpaid my federal taxes by $1500 on top of everything else!
I immediately emailed my tax prep person and said that's it, my confidence level is gone, I'm going elsewhere. I was so grateful that I hadn't paid a dime as I'm sure getting my money back would have been impossible at this point since they'd have said I already had my forms. I said I'm going to a CPA as I need to feel some element of trust and obviously with errors like this, there is no trust left with H&R.
In all fairness - leaving out all the errors that would have been costly in the long run, H&R did come within $85 of the same adjusted gross income that my CPA got me. So the bottom line there is she knew what she was doing, but her attention to detail was beyond bad. My CPA has an office staff that automatically checks and double checks each and every return for errors, and you don't have to pay $40 more to get that guarantee. They stand behind their work. The cost at the CPA was exactly what H&R charged - $500, less the $40 extra peace of mind which came automatically with the CPA's product.
So why on earth would I ever return to H&R? They don't even double check their work! No one looks over the returns, they expect you to sign off and pay without ever seeing what you are approving. And the misinformation - saying I could use a flash drive, saying I could email my returns in - all completely false. And not one time did anyone apologize for these annoyances.
My tax prep lady did finally apologize that I had such a rough time with them but didn't take any responsibility for any of the hassle. So in my opinion, I have no idea why anyone would use these people. There was no cost savings using H&R. I ended up with a full-on CPA who actually does accurate work for the same price and the peace of mind was built in, and the hassles H&R put me through were just so unprofessional. Buyer beware - go to a real tax professional, not these fools.

Last year I made a payment to my Emerald Advance, they took it out twice, putting my bank account into the negative which resulted in a couple of weeks worth of overdraft fees. Had to wait for them to "investigate" the issue. That was a big mess that took weeks to clear up.
This year, the due date to pay off the Emerald Advance is before the IRS will allow refund to be released due to new law. After speaking to them this a.m., I find out I'll be charged an interest fee, since it will be after due date! The customer service is stellar, and now I know why. Now I have seen ads for them that state the cost is about $150 to $200 which I think is pretty outrageous, but for the effort that might have been involved (I thought) it might be worth it.
We were done and there was a few receipts needed to bring down my tax debt (I ended up owing $600) so she assured me she would keep my file safe until I returned a few days later. I glanced over at the screen because the invoice for the H&R Block service was there (we hadn't discussed how much they would charge) and it was $300! Just for filling out a form! I asked if that is what I owed and she gleefully told me that that amount did not include the "Peace of mind" garbage. Are you kidding me? I have done my taxes with TurboTax for years for about $30. This year I did them just to get a ballpark figure before I went in and it was the same! This year he went alone to file his taxes and came back with this card and confused about what he had done exactly because 30 minutes later he received a notice on his phone saying his "LOAN" was denied. He was confused because he was not aware he had applied for a loan. When I tried to talk to the H&R Block office about what this was and what was the recourse they refused to discuss this with me. I went in with my son to try and discuss this with them they were rude and denied 4 times it was a loan.
My son finally said you have lied and scammed me because the text on my phone says it is in fact a LOAN. They said they were feeling threatened by his anger and we needed to leave before they called the police and refused to do anything whatsoever to help him. They have destroyed a near 40 year relationship over trying to force this program on unsuspecting people. There are 5 returns that come out of my household. None of which any longer shall be handled by H&R Block. I am so disappointed in them. The way they are misrepresenting this program is unconscionable.
I hope this results in a class action lawsuit by those of us who have been scammed. Maybe fines or sanctions by the government will occur due to the heinous nature of what they are doing which makes consumers no longer feel safe trusting them to handle their accounts. I'm normally a regular user of TurboTax, but this year with things being super tight financially, I jumped at the idea of using H&R Block for a refund advance. I'm one of the many people affected by the new law which holds Federal returns with certain credits until after Feb 15th. I visited an H&R Block on Greenmount Ave in Baltimore first and was helped by a woman who couldn't understand or speak English clearly, so as nice as she was it didn't make for a positive experience. I eventually was so unnerved by her obvious misunderstanding of not only me, but the tax preparation software itself that I left feeling that it was best she not file my return.
On January 23rd I went to the H&R Block in Owings Mills and was greeted by a nice man named Joseph who after I explained my last experience to, assured me he would get everything straightened out and processed. We sat down, along with my boyfriend, who is a witness to all I was told that day, and began my return. All said and done I applied for my refund advance and was told because it was going on the Emerald Card that I had to have both my federal and state refunds put on there too, which I later found to be untrue. I was also assured that no fees or the refund advance would be deducted from my state taxes, only my federal when it came back from the IRS approx Feb 15-27th. That obviously wasn't true either because they took my MD State taxes as soon as they came in for repayment of those very things.
I was told to look forward to my $812 return from MD in about two weeks but why would I do that if I was notified that they could take it all because I applied for at least a $500 refund advance and my prep fees were already over $300?! That's because I wasn't notified! I was told and led to believe that this refund advance was an advance on my federal taxes and that my State WOULDN'T be touched. My so called refund "advance" of $500 came through on January 24th and my state was taken from me after being released only a few days later on the 27th! What the hell kind of advance is that?!
What made it worse was that when I returned to the branch (after calling the Emerald Card number and being left on hold to a never ending ringing after demanding a manager) all my concerns were validated when the manager agreed with all the things the tax preparer had said to me and said they were unaware that State taxes were being taken! Other people came over and told me how sorry they were this happened and it didn't make any sense. If your managers are ill informed as to how this refund advance crap works then that speaks to why everyone else is too!
They aren't making it clear that whichever of your refunds HITS THE ACCOUNT FIRST can be used to repay for services and advances which is a big problem seeing as how people are expecting an advance on their federal, not the state. I later seen the fine print where it says your state can be taken but I can assure you that was not what I was told and I think that is absolutely ridiculous. I would have never put myself through all of this for an advance of 3 days... this has made my life miserable and caused me an immense amount of stress because I'm out of work due to pregnancy complications and need every dime until I return to work February 13th.
I was offered a refund of $150 toward the tax prep fees by the district manager (to be mailed within 2 weeks!) when I went back to the branch but I still don't feel that's adequate. You guys recognize that you're misinforming people and admit that y'all weren't aware that the bank being used for the advances would be taking any state funds from the customer so why should that appease me? This is so wrong... there's no reason that I'm being acknowledged for changing how management speaks to their clients because even they realize they are guilty of delivering information incorrectly.

We had our taxes done in 2014 at H&R Block one year because they had a 'pay half price' deal going on. That was the biggest mistake of our lives!! We thought everything was great until this year, 2017!!! We received a letter telling us we owed over $1200 that included over $200 in penalties and interest for 2014. We were told that, in that year, there were some software issues that caused a lot of people to have issues with their taxes. She positively assured us that because it was due to software issues, their fault, that it would be taken care of. WRONG!!!!!
So, the letter has a deadline of Feb 12, 2017 on it. My husband called the number on the letter, from the state of Kansas, and tried to find out what he could. He didn't understand much, but we knew we had very little time to get to the bottom of it. I went the next day to see someone at the office on Antioch in Kansas City MO. I ended up having to leave it there since no one capable was in! I called the next day and the next day to find out what was going on. Finally after at least the 3rd day, I got an answer. The woman said she's seen the letter we got before, and she knew exactly what to do. By the time I went back to pick up our paperwork, it was faxed to the right people at the state of Kansas. I picked up our taxes and thought it was over. A few days later my husband got a call saying that the matter wasn't taken care of and that we still owed over $1200. She was very rude!
So, I called the office on Antioch again and told them what we were told. After they looked at it again, they determined that it was actually their mistake and that we did owe the tax. It was eventually escalated to someone named Jessica. She was an office manager at the Independence office. She told me they would pay the interest and penalties, but that it would take 2 weeks to get that check sent to us. She also said she would amend our taxes and we would get over $600 back. That would leave $200+ for us to pay. It all sounded ok until she never sent the amended return. Said it was sent out last week on Tuesday and we never got it. I don't think it was sent. I also found out today that she never put in for the claim on the penalty and interest. She outright lied about that!
So, I've been trying to call her every day for the last 5-6 weeks, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day, and she is either gone or with a client EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY! I have left message upon message, urgent or not, and she still won't return my calls. It wasn't even till I started asking for someone 'higher up' that she all of a sudden had time to call me back. I started asking for Roger, who is higher than her in the office. They wouldn't let me talk to him. Instead they went back to her. Customer service sucks!!!!
Then I finally called their corporate office and talked to someone there. They looked it up and found out that Jessica lied about putting in a claim for us. Nothing had been filed yet! She said she put it in last week and we would have it in 2 weeks! Liar! I told the woman that due to all the hassles and crap we've dealt with because of Jessica, she should have to pay the bill! So, after all this hassle and stress around this, we still aren't any closer to getting anything resolved and they royally screwed us over!! That's the truth! Jessica ** is THE most dishonest and non-caring person and no one should have to deal with her at this awful place they call a company! JACKSON HEWITT NEVER TREATED US THIS BAD!!

Today, February 2, 2017, I called H&R Block and was transferred to the product support department. The lady that answered said her name was, "Tatiana." I told her that I was having a problem logging in to H&R Block online service. I told her that for security purposes, the software asked for "account key" which I received, which contained eight alphabets and that the system only allowed me to type in seven alphabets.
She never answered or explained why that may have happened. She asked for the taxpayer's SSN. I told her I don't give that information out like that and asked if there was some other way to pull up the record. Instead of telling me some other way, she accused me of not cooperating with her. I said to her, "Please do not accuse me of not cooperating when I'm just trying to understand." I asked her again to help me and the next time she said something like I was not allowing her to help me. She also had poor listening skills. I had to repeat myself a few time when giving personal information.
Because of her nasty tone, I asked her to give me her name again, and to speak to someone else. Instead of her getting someone else for me, she transferred me to take the survey. Perhaps this was her way of getting back at me. After the survey, I called back and had to listen to all those recordings before reaching another person. But, this time I spoke with a guy named, "Charles." He was very nice and kind and he explained my problem. I thanked him and told him I would take the survey again and would give a very good rating.

Emerald Advance is a scam. I file my own taxes via TurboTax every year for free and this year I am in need of a tax advance desperately because they are delaying tax refunds this year. So I went to H&R Block to find out about the tax advance up to $1250, I met with a lady and she told me that I would have to file my taxes through them in order to even apply for the tax advance that I may not get approved for. So with my desperate situation I weighed my options and the cost for them to file my taxes was $387.00 dollars but I thought it would be worth the loss because of the tax advance. With that being said, I prayed that I would get the advance so I didn't waste my money and I was approved for a measly $500.00 that wasn't even enough to cover the expense I desperately needed to pay. To break it down... you are way overcharged for a "possibility" of an advance. I will never make that mistake again!

Upon preparation tasking in order to do business I checked my Emerald Card Balance and was surprised to become notified by some unidentified, foreign, broken English speaking representative individual of the notion that my Emerald Card "had been closed". How this action on my card occurred is a mystery. The rep only cared about expressing a want to open a new one for me ever after I informed twice that I am declining and will do my business at my known H&R block office, however the rep just could not seem to understand this information once I relayed it twice and then a third time before ending the phone call.
This unfortunate, surprising, shocking, ill-willed situation makes me really think about the notion that if something of this nature can occur accurately without my knowledge or approval of it at all, then what else could occur??? Perhaps one day I find one day any funds allocated to this card mysteriously disappeared and we're taken by this or another foreign, broken English speaking representative who has no understanding of the information I relay during a phone call to wherever I get transferred to upon placing a phone call to the phone number posted on the back of the card.
Perhaps the card has funds allocated to it but is declined for an amount during a routine transaction well within the fund's balance, and I place a phone call again but the reason for my call is not understood. Exactly what could I do. I have no idea at this time however I am currently working on an investigation along with other interested parties to get to the bottom of everything. It is a real shame that I have to allocate such time and resources on such a situation however I did nothing to create it but instead only found myself very, very, very surprised by it.

I usually file my taxes online using H&R Block software. I am self employed and my husband has a W-2. We have 3 children and our adjusted income is pretty low (under $35000). This year I decided to go in to the store and file so that we could take advantage of the refund advance. We have some unusual expenses this year and I wanted to get ahead of them. I could not find any information online about the "other underwriting criteria" required for approval of the advance. We asked about this inside and were told that they didn't have any info. We asked about fees and were told it would be about $400. The fees were $639 and we were denied the advance (1.5 hours after leaving). We'd spend almost 2 hours there before the fees came up. So I basically just paid an extra $575 for nothing. I strongly recommend NOT going into the store in the hopes of getting the refund advance. Save your time and money.

They say around 175.00. They have all or your information for as long as 2 weeks they say. Well I want to tell you the return is $475.00. Allowing, these snakes was a requirement to qualify for their Emerald card advancement or loan. My tax preparer was witty and nice as he slyly danced around my questions about this advancement and their fees. His vague and inability to elaborate on my questions were red flags. He informed me that my tax refund would be on my card, within a day or two and 80% of their clients receive a loan approval.
Your loan refund would depend on the amount of your tax refund. These people are disgusting frauds. After being hung up on by the Emerald card reps and numerous, unreturned calls from my tax preparer, I contacted the IRS who informed me that... They intentionally mislead you by saying your early advance will be denied if you have unpaid child support, government debt, judgments or liens against you. They also tell you your refund must be over the advance amount after fees. Then they say "Since you don't have any of these problems, would you like to do it and file with us." They never suggest a low credit score will disqualify you, and avoid the question with shady answers when you ask directly. So you think it's a lock and agree to the $388 fee they charge for a simple 20 minute filing. But an hour later you'll get an email saying you were denied. It's a huge misleading (even though legal) scam. Only those with pristine credit could qualify. I called them and even then they said they don't understand why I was denied. They only knew of legal judgments and they are not aware of how Emerald operates so they can't say. Yet thousands of unhappy customers have said the same as I.
So never again Block-heads. I will blast your misleading sales tactics to all who will listen. I'll go to Jackson Hewitt from now on or do them myself. You are rude to your customers for self gain. Every year I do my taxes through H&R Block. This year I decided to use the best of both. Well my tax professional did not do her job and change my address to the system as I asked her to. Three or four times she did not use the correct account and routing number for my refund so my refund was sent back to the bank from an old account that I had used before I was married. She did not update my information as she was told which I have emails to prove. So June 2nd it was sent back to the bank. For the last six months nobody knows where my refund is. I did a search for my refund through IRS and H&R Block. Finally two days before Christmas I received a check from H&R Block BofI Federal Bank so I think yeah I'm going to have a good Christmas. No. I go to cash my check and it says that the check is not valid.
The lady can't verify the verification ideas. No good. The checking account number is no good. So the first day I can start contacting people after Christmas which most places are closed. I end up speaking with at least 30 different people. Nobody wants to listen to my story or even help with my problem. They sent two of the offices to customer service. Sent me to work. Now the people wasn't even in the office they opened up. I don't know how many cases at least 10 cases on my situation for a supervisor to call me back and none of them ever do. So finally I get a supervisor to call me back on January 6th and tells me to go to the H&R Block office closest to me and fill out a client check replacement form and fax it to them and as soon as they get the facts the money will be on my card. She said I would have my money before the end of the weekend.
So here as it's Monday 3 days after I fax this form three times I finally get a supervisor to call me back and she tells me that they have to have the actual check in hand so I need to send it to them through the mail. So she proceeded to give me the address and it is a Kansas City address where I live at. So why couldn't I just go to wherever it is I'm sending it to and it's handed to them directly. I mean it took 6 months to get my check in my hand so I really don't want to let it go. She says "no man that has to come through the mail." So I went and paid $20 to send it to them Priority Mail. Let's see how long it takes for somebody to get it. All week and I tried to call and figure out if they got my fax and they kept telling me the systems are down or I would wait on hold for an hour and somebody would hang up on me so I still yet to have this problem resolved.
I still don't have my tax refund and the check that they sent me is $1,000 less than what my refund is supposed to be. Also I did the promotion to do it online best of both and they were supposed to give me a gift card. I'm supposed to have a $200 gift card from this year 2015 and I still haven't received it. I've called that department five times and told them that it is not on my my block account and it is not in my email. So I guess now I'm going to get off of here and call them again to see where my gift card is. I'm very dissatisfied with their service. They have been holding and drawing interest on my $5,000 and I think it is bull crap when I got my check in the mail. I went ahead and bought a few Christmas present. Thank you I got my check. I'm going to cash it no big deal. I'll pay my electric later.
Now I sit here and my electricity is off. I have taken 3 or 4 days off of work to deal with these people on the phone and at the office and try to get some kind of answer or some of my money at least. They do not care. They're very and compassion. If they do not listen they want you to explain your situation to every person that they transfer you to on the phone even though you automatically call and ask for a supervisor. So I don't know when I'm going to get my 2015 tax return. I've already did all of my stuff for my 2016 so let's see how long it takes for me to get that this year.

He said to pay it and keep my schedule appointment. So I did and was denied code 05 non-payment. The payment didn't post until Sunday Dec 11. And everyone number I called gave me the runaround and not one person try to fix the issue. All decisions are final. I have been loyal customer for 10 yrs and if I knew that the payment wouldn't post I would have change my appointment and avoided a denial. But now my daughter is out of Christmas because of this. I will never get my taxes done by them and all my ties with H&R Block will be canceled!

I have been a loyal customer with H&R Block for over 15 years and for the last few applied for the Emerald Advance without incident. NOT THE CASE this year. I applied a few weeks ago and at the end of this process in the office was informed my application was declined due to insufficient income!!! The day I filed I should have trusted my gut when I didn't feel comfortable with the tax rep (he shared, hang on in there with me. I normal don't do this and not totally comfortable). Nice guy but not the way to instill confidence in the customer! At the end of the visit and after I was declined, I received no documentation but an assurance that he would inquire and get back to me.
After a week and a half of no response I phoned to inquire thinking surely they had entered the wrong information and was informed there was no way for them to look at what was filed for information (WHAT???) and I was given a number to contact H&R Block customer service for hopeful resolution! All I received was an agent telling me she could see the "rejection code" but that she too could not investigate if accurate information was entered or not... are you serious???
I was also informed that I should have been given some documentation as to the reason for decline at the time of my application (I was given nothing) and today learned "We are sorry but once the application has been denied it cannot be re-processed!!!" Seriously??? Even if there is question as to if you entered the right information or not??? H&R Block is an expensive service and I've used them for years, however after today I will not set foot in the office ever again. Lesson learned.

I have used H & R Block in the past whereas, I sought what, I thought was a well known reliable tax company that, I could trust my taxes to. Instead, I ended up with the most unprofessional, irresponsible, network of people, I could ever believe could make it this long. I made 3 trips to fix the failure to file the health care form. The first individual who messed my taxes up would not take responsibility for the screw up so, I had to argue that have another one to file it right and they messed up. I then went to another office to have it fixed and this time, I ended up paying a tax penalty. I went to another office where, I sought for H & R Block to fix this and THEY HAD THE NERVE TO WANT ME TO PAY FOR WHAT THEY MESSED UP. I AM WARNING EVERYONE. DO NOT MESS WITH THESE PEOPLE.

Well here is my story. There are too many on here about negative so I will give the condensed version. H&R made an error on my taxes and put a number in the wrong column. The IRS caught this and sent me a letter saying I owed them money. I took this letter to the office and the manager is sorely under-trained. Nothing about "We will look into this", just a bunch of excuses. Thankfully I bought their Peace of Mind for said year but in reality why should I have? They made the error but oh that is right they don't stand by their product.
So 5 months later I am still arguing with H&R block and they have come full circle where their claims review committee has told me I have to "Prove H&R Block made the Error". Ok I will prove it. You did my taxes and the IRS didn't like it! Needless to say I will never use them again nor will I recommend them to anyone. One of the most expensive places in the country to get taxes done with some of the most uncaring individuals around.

Trying to get approved for that Emerald Advance is a waste of time and you will only be taking a hard inquiry on your credit for nothing.

I have applied and been approved for the H&R Block Emerald Advance for 9 years until this year, 2016. I was denied because even though I have earned and pay state & federal taxes on my unemployment compensation weekly checks, H&R Block bank said my U.C. Payments do not count as income, therefore I would not be able to pay back the Emerald advance of $350.00-$1000.00. Which is stupid because H&R Block for one charges $45.00 to obtain the advance, and two, the amount "loaned", given is deducted dollar for dollar out of the customers federal tax return in February/March, before the remainder is even in the hands of the taxpayer. The amount loaned through the Emerald Advance is not paid back like a traditional line of credit!!
I will no longer do any sort of business with H&R Block, due to the ignorant, illogical manner which they approve their Emerald Advance in November of each and every year. This needs a severe change. And you as well get charged a "highway robbery" amount, anyway of $250.00-$400.00 to file your taxes after Emerald Advance has been given. I am forever finished, disgusted, and will NEVER RETURN TO H&R BLOCK AS A CUSTOMER, and neither should you!!

Well... er... can you go back as far as... eh hem! 30 years? Approximately 30 years ago, I stepped into an H&R Block office. For a fee, the H&R Block rep arranged for me to get a rapid refund (back then, a couple weeks was RAPID!). Wow! Was I a happy camper! (1980-something). So much so that I happily camped out with the IRS (if memory serves me correctly) for 3 consecutive years at a rate of $444.00 a pop. You see, unbeknownst to me, the H&R Block rep really wasn't paying much attention to the accounting details. I had all the confidence in the world that this person was really an "on the money" professional. Turns out that the person's calculations were all "off the money."
No matter how much I tried to convince the IRS that it wasn't my fault, but that it was that of H&R Block, instead, they really didn't see it that way. So for 3 consecutive years (again, if I remember correctly) I was "docked" by the IRS $444.00 for somebody else's H&R Block-headed mistake. As far as "Uncle" was concerned, it was my tax return and my responsibility to be certain all was in order. (Arr yeah... Like was some accountant or something like that!) Well, I became one, quick! Self-motivation!
Well... I'll tell you... Since that time, if I had anything good to say about H&R Block, I guess it would be that they really inspired me to be my own accountant from thenceforth. No thanks to that horrible experience, I opted to do my own taxes ever since! Thanks H&R Block for NOTHING! Guess that's it... Except... I'm really not amazed that here they are 30 years later being no better than they were 30 years ago. No rating. An "F" would be just too good for them! Baaah!

Mine, was an error committed via Helen ** and now I owe the IRS and the State of California for her ERROR, and they originally stated that they would take care of it, paid $72.00 and told me not to worry.
Today, received a call from someone I had never dealt with stating they will not pay for the error they made. When questioned, they literally hung up on me! Having read the reviews and the problems encountered with H&R Block offices, I can only say if the parties used the H&R Block yearly software and file taxes themselves, they would not have the problems they encounter. Immediately after e-filing, your tax is checked by IRS and in same day, you receive an acceptance or error notice. If an error, you will be told what the error is, then correct it and resubmit. It couldn't be simpler. Your only cost will be the purchase of the software. I have used H&R Block software for years since it was TaxCut.

Myself and my husband have gotten our taxes done at H&R Block for many years with no problems at all. We went and saw Randy in 2013 for him to do our 2012 taxes. Everything seemed to be right. Fast forward to March 2016 when we received a letter from the IRS stating they did not include all our information in and we now owe money to the IRS. I save my taxes for 5 years so I still had all my tax information. I pull out the trusty little folder they give us and there is the form from our 401K. It showed the amount of taxes we owed.
So we did give it to him he just did not file it. So first my husband called and no answer. Then I called and set up a appointment to meet with Randy and in which he did say that he did make the mistake and he has to pass it on to his supervisor, but they will pay this because it was their error. He took my husband's # and took all of our information, the tax forms and the letter from the IRS. So we waited a couple of weeks with no call from anyone. We called again and they did not return our call. So finally I got a hold of someone in the corporate office and they said that they don't have a case set up and they are not showing any of that information was in their systems. I was furious. Here we have all our information with them and they don't have it??? So they said they can set me up with an appointment with someone in their main office here in Green Bay Wisconsin.
Thank goodness when I went in they did have the information just sitting there and no one was doing anything about it. During my appointment I spoke with Kelly ** and she said that because we did not purchase the peace of mind they can't cover the amount we owe for taxes, but they will take care of the interest and also they will pay for what we paid to get our taxes done. So we waited to get a new letter from the IRS so we could pay what was owed to them because at this point I felt that we had no choice. Well we did get a letter from the IRS in September 2016 stating that if we don't pay this they will garnish our wages. So my husband tried calling H&R Block and tried calling H&R Block and no one EVER got back to him. Then last week they did garnish his wages and we tried calling again and no one called us back.
We keep getting someone saying that they will calls us back and no one EVER calls us back. When you are in customer service you need to follow through with your promises. What a joke I have never done with a company who has messed up and not taken the initiative to fix their problems. When I did meet with Kelly I let her know that we did not want to pay for their services for the 2015 year so we did our taxes ourselves and she then tried to push a second look on us. Yeah right, they messed up. They failed to call us back and follow through with what they promised, all because we did not have the Peace of Mind. I am sorry but if I did my job wrong my company would have to take care of it because it is what professional businesses do. Now they lost a long time customer because they are unprofessional and can't do their jobs correctly.
One of the worst things about this is that when they did our 2012 income taxes even if this charge was on there we would have gotten a huge refund. But now because we made more money this year we didn't have as much coming back and so it hurt us a little bit more this year than it would have if they just did their jobs professionally. I will never go back and I will also tell everyone about the poor service and how they really operate. Wish I knew of a way to make the company responsible for their employees, and to follow through with what they promised.

I filed my 2014 taxes in March 2015 and presented documents from a lawsuit I won. I told the rep that my attorney said the award was non-taxable but the rep said she believed they were. I told the rep that I must defer to them as the subject matter experts and that I wanted them to research the tax laws and if the award was taxable, to include it in my tax return and if not to let me know. The decision was that it was non-taxable. In August 2016 I received a letter from the IRS stating I was penalized for not reporting the award on my taxes. I called the H&R Block office and spoke to a rep now available during the "off-season". I told them about the problem and sent them a copy of the documents which they then wrote a letter and forwarded everything to the IRS to dispute the claim.
I received another IRS letter restating that I owed the taxes. I spoke to the H&R Block rep in person and was told that upon further review a mistake was made and that the money awarded from the lawsuit was taxable. I was then told that because I did not purchase the $50 dollar "peace of mind warranty" H&R Block would not pay any of the costs incurred from the IRS. I then asked why I would pay a tax professional $50 dollars for them to know how to do their job when I am already paying almost $500 dollars for them to "do their job" and therefore, know how to do the job? I was then told the warranty was just that- a warranty to ensure if a mistake is made by H&R Block that all costs associated with the mistake are then paid.
I then rephrased the question and rhetorically asked, "So, you're telling me that I am asked each year to make a decision as to whether I want the warranty or do not want the warranty for peace of mind to pay H&R Block $50 dollars as insurance that the rep who does my taxes and is licensed by the state as a professional actually knows the job well enough to do my taxes? And if a mistake is made my $50 dollars (and those who pay it) help H&R Block offset the expense associated with the mistake?" I further explained that it is actually we the taxpayer who are paying the costs associated with any mistake made by any tax preparer employed by H&R Block and that the company actually does not incur any burden or cost for their mistakes.
So we have the option to pay or not to pay H&R Block $50 dollars so someone who goes through specialized training, is supposed to know the tax laws and the forms needed to comply with them, are licensed professionals, and are purported to be the "subject Matter Experts" can make a mistake due to a misinterpretation of the tax code or incompetence and little if anything happens to the person who prepared the taxes. I find this practice no different than if an attorney gave us the option to pay $50 dollars up-front so they would defend us if a decision they made cost us hundred or thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expense or incarceration. Any other "professional" charges you for their service and if they make a mistake they fix it at their expense and do not charge you extra to be covered against mistakes THEY make. I stopped using H&R Block almost 20 years ago and now I see why I left.

We have had our taxes done by H&R Block for several years. In March, when at an appointment for this year's taxes, we were notified that there was an error on our last year's taxes... to the tune of $10,000. H&R Block had knowledge of this mistake the November prior and never notified us!!! We had purchased the Peace of Mind and submitted a claim. The error was on the part of H&R Block and I had direct communication with the District manager, Michael **... who even gave me his cell phone number. We received $5500 from the Peace of Mind 8 weeks after submitting the claim.
Mr. ** explained that the State of New Jersey would be notifying me with penalties and interest on the tax error. He explained that I needed to pay the amount and then submit for reimbursement. I made an appointment at the same H&R Block to submit the invoice from the State. My consultant had no idea how to handle it. I was uncomfortable after she asked me to write our social security numbers on a piece of paper and leave them with her.
I have called Michael ** dozens of times and left messages. NO ONE RETURNS MY CALLS!!! Customer service should be number one in every company that deals with the public. I have called the corporate office... Well, I guess you know how that went, since I am now writing a review. I am hoping that someone from corporate reads this and gives Mr. Michael ** a kick in the butt to solve my problem!! Check your voice mail!!

Last year the IRS started garnishing my husband's checks. It has taken us over a year and lots of money to finally find out why. Apparently H&R Block didn't file our returns for 2 years. Actually it was an amended one from the year before and then that year. We were led to believe they did. And when we didn't receive our refund, I called several times and was told different excuses. Finally their last excuse was since we owed the state they took it. I believed that and let it go.
Now a year goes by after all that and we file with a different company. No problems. Then a couple months later they start garnishing my husband check. All we could find out on our own, was that it had to do with us not paying enough in... which made no sense because we have always gotten money back with the exception of those 2 years. As I said its been over a whole year of money being taken and the money we had to pay out to an attorney and an accountant. Only to find out it's all because of the year we went to h and R block they never filed for either year. All I am asking for is our 375 bucks back that we paid the girl who did it. I have also been given the runaround.
Our accountant refiled for us and our lawyer said "they are next. Keep your fingers crossed." He can get thru and at least get our money back. The worse part of all this... I even managed to find out the girls cell phone number and contacted her numerous times over the next 6 or 7 months of that year. And to think all she had to do was take 5 min. to look it up on her computer and she would have seen that she never filed them. But instead it was easier to lie to us for 5 min. with b.s. that I'm so embarrassed now that I actual fell for. Im not even asking for anything from them except the money I paid her.
The office staff is extremely rude. And when we called headquarters we were led to believe they would be calling us back and every time we called back we would have to start all over with it... even though we were also given case number. It's very sad to think that a company can get away with advertising. They right a wrong and yet has no intentions of it.

My taxes are very simple so I have always filed them using a simple online software that walks me through each step, providing guidance along the way. It costs me $9.99 each year to file both my Federal and State taxes and I have never, ever had any problems. When it was time to file my 2014 taxes, I decided it was best to get help from a professional firm because for the first time in my life, I had a 1099-k for income I had received from renting my apartment (AirBnB) in addition to my annual income (W-2). I gathered all of my documents and went to my local H&R Block to meet with what I thought was a competent tax professional.
He filed my Federal and State returns and then he gave me the piece of information regarding my 1099 that I had come to H&R block for. He asked me how many nights I rented out my apartment during 2014, and when I told him 12, he replied by notifying me that because I had rented it out for less than 15 days, I was not required to include the income I received on my return. Great news, I thought! I was unaware of this IRS rule and would have totally claimed the rental income on my return had I completed it myself. The $210 I had to pay H&R block was totally worth it, right? WRONG!
So fast forward to September, 2016 when I get a notice in the mail from the IRS claiming that I owe them taxes plus interest on the AirBnB income I didn't claim on my 2014 tax return. Clearly this is something H&R Block would take care of since they were the ones that made the error, not me. So yesterday, I take all of my 2014 tax documents and the IRS notification down to a local H&R block (not the office where I originally visited). The tax advisor and I chat about why I made the appointment and she proceeds to go through my tax forms looking for a Piece of Mind Service Plan. (The Service Plan wasn't there because my agent reassured me that it wasn't necessary because my income tax return was so simple and straightforward).
The tax advisor then apologizes but tells me that there is nothing she can do for me because I didn't purchase the Piece of Mind Plan. Unfortunately, I would have to pay the back taxes, along with interest that I owed to the IRS. I explained to her that the only reason I came to H&R Block in the first place was because I needed assistance with filing my rental income from 2014 and was now being told that I owed money on it when H&R Block assured me that I didn't. She threw her hands up in the air and told me there was nothing she could do to help me.
So basically, I paid H&R block $210 for a service that I always do on my own for $9.99. I was given false information, my taxes were filed incorrectly and now I'm being told that I owe the IRS additional taxes on the income H&R block told me not to include on my return. Makes perfect sense. I advise you to NEVER use their services.
