I have been using H&R Block software since the 1990’s. They have been very accurate, easy to use and through. On the one occasion when I was questioned by the IRS Block Customer Support was awesome. I stood my ground and with Block’s help provided the paperwork to make my case. I will continue to use H&R Block software.

It served the purpose and I was in and out. It answered all the necessary questions for the write offs and got my return relatively quick. All good. I would recommend it to another person. But if someone had complicated taxes, deductions, may not be the best route.

This experience occurred during the beginning of 2018 and the summer of 2018 for 2017 taxes. My state return for Arizona involved itemized deductions. When I added my deduction for the taxes I paid AZ last year, H&R Block's software added that amount to both the 1040 Schedule A (correct) and to the AZ 140's estimated tax payments (very incorrect). The instructions for the AZ 140 clearly state to not do this. Unfortunately, I did not catch this mistake before filing since I was under the false assumption that their software worked. When I was informed that I underpaid, I discovered that H&R Block Premium Online did not allow me to fix it through their software. This required me to file a 140X manually.

I called their support and was told to just fill out the 140X by hand. When I asked them if this means I get this covered, I was told that the guarantee did not apply since it was not an "arithmetic" error (a sly work-around in the guarantee) but an error from the software entering values into fields they did not belong in. This resulted in a $337 mistake that included late fees and interest for a total of $345.99. The timing was also very poor considering that my trips to the Tax Revenue building had to be taken during my usual work hours. It was also the middle of the summer in Phoenix, and I was on crutches with a freshly broken foot. In general, having to clean up a mess caused by H&R Block under these circumstances was especially frustrating.

When I called H&R Block again to challenge them on the guarantee, I was again told that my case did not apply. I asked how I could avoid this in the future since their online software was forcing errors. I was told to buy the offline software next year. In general: Their program had a significant bug. They did not guarantee their product. They admitted the online product was faulty but that it was my problem. They told me to just use the offline software to avoid the bug (which suggests that they were not concerned about the bug). Do not use in Arizona.

Filed my taxes with this software. They had a mistake in their software and issued an update AFTER I filed my taxes. It cost me money because I could have gotten a larger deduction. This company should tell users to NOT FILE taxes until just before April 15 in case there are updates. The issue involved as the software not allowing a deduction for "Qualified Business Income". After the update the deduction shows and refund goes up - but it's too late.

Hey my name is Tay and I am a full-time student with a part-time job and I have been using H&R Block since 2014. I just want to say I’m in my early 20s and I grew up on H&R Block. I have been filing my taxes every single year since turning 18. I have never used a tax preparer or any other service. H&R Block is the most convenient tax prep service Ever. H&R Block helps people like me; students who don’t have any time to make an appointment to go file taxes, students who are smart enough to do it themselves without help. I filed my tax return March 1, 2020 and today is March 4, 2020 and I already have received my state return back. I am 100% serious. This is not a joke, not a sham, nothing. I am not paid to say this. I really have been using H&R Block for the last 6 Years and have received my maximum refund and I am proud to say it. I love HRB. They need to start setting up tax returns on campus for real.

The tax preparation was a breeze initially, but my federal return got rejected because I needed a identity protection PIN (IP PIN). I got my IP PIN from the IRS website. I entered my IP PIN in H&R Block, but the software took me in a loop. Even before it attempted re-filing it, it kept taking me back to the same screen. I called customer care. First they said that you need to call IRS to confirm if the IP PIN is valid. This didn't make sense because we haven't even attempted re-filing it yet.

Then they said, just print and mail your returns (after I paid $124 to H&R Block). Then, after talking to the supervisor, who also tried to send me on a wild goose chase deliberately, I was able to get them to admit there is a problem in their software. Then they put me on hold for 50 minutes! I eventually figured out that by clicking on a small link on the side (not the main "Next" button), I can get out of the loop and eventually re-file my taxes. The taxes were accepted within 5 minutes of that.

Not sure who still has to file taxes but I just did mine with H&R Block. WORST MISTAKE EVER!! They are essentially robbing money from the hard working parents who really look forward to their refund and rely heavily on the great big help that the child tax credit is if you happen to fall into a certain tax bracket with a child under 17. When I got there I was sat down with a menu of what they can do for me and what it MIGHT cost (though they won't know for sure till the end of the horrific hour long process). They nickle and dime EVERY PENNY from their customers. Straight down to that child tax credit I mentioned. For every child you can get a credit for they want $45 if you choose to accept said credit. So for me.. 3 kids = $135 in extra fees for HR BLOCK to greedily suck up despite it being money that the NYS GOVERNMENT gives to families with children.

In what world does H&R Block think they are living in where this is ok? And for those who think a private tax accountant is too much money they charge a standard $200 fee for a basic return. After H&R BLOCK was finished with me they took me to the cleaners for a grand total of $400. What scam artists. Please consider looking elsewhere to file. Nobody should be charged a dime to receive a tax credit the government gives away for free. Especially when it's their job to get their customers the max refund possible!!

The Credit card stopped them and then informed me.

I did not use the card anywhere except H and R Block so it had to be them. The person who took my payment was Lisa the Clerk there. The Fraud started only hours after Lisa took my payment. I need to protect all my credit after this Lisa person took my payment. The funny thing is today when I went to complain Lisa who was suppose to be there was absent today. I find that strange that Lisa was missing the day after some person made their last attempt to steal my Credit. H and R block needs to investigate Lisa.

Interimly, I contacted HRB and was told heavy e-file submissions to the IRS was the problem. I then called the IRS directly to learn my return was rejected due to missing forms that were not transmitted by HRB. After further communication with HRB, they finally fessed up and informed me that some of their forms were not updated and the software had flaws that would be fixed with the 2/14/2020 update. Needless to say, I was so stressed out, I vowed never to trust this software again.

I have always used Turbo Tax, but this year my fiance bought me the premium edition of H&R Block for year 2019. Federal was accepted right away, but the State return for California kept getting rejected saying that my prior year's AGI did not match their records. I called H&R Block's customer service, waited on hold for an eternity, then was finally told that it was a problem with the Franchise Tax Board of California, and to try submitting my return again in a few days. After reading these comments, I suspect that the problem is with H&R Block, and NOT the Franchise Tax Board. I did not see anywhere in the software where they would be charging me additional money for my 1099 MISC, so I hope that doesn't happen. They have also charged me $19.95 for the two times I e-filed for my state through them, even though their site states I would not be charged until my return was accepted. What a SCAM.

I got completely thru my taxes, and to the point where they ask how I want to pay the $22.49 for preparation, and how I would like to receive my refund. I opted to have the prep cost come out of my refund. It never did ask me how I wanted to receive my refund. I kept looking and looking, on one screen it said that question hadn't been answered, yet on another, it said it had. In the end I found a little $ sign tucked away in the far right upper corner of the page - I clicked on that and it said my bill would be $22.49 for prep, and $34.95 for REFUND TRANSFER FEE. That being added after I never had the chance to tell them how I wanted to receive my refund. Quite the SCAM. I'd rather start over somewhere else than pay H&R, and will never return.

Then when you log back in it says chat session already open, but it cant be found anywhere. So you have to go back to the end of the line. I would not recommend this product to anyone because if you have a problem good luck getting an agent on the chat log enough before the session expires. How convenient.

I would give it zero stars if I could. I get social security, a state pension and have a state government 457 retirement account. The instructions ask to select the company managing the retirement savings account. If your company is not listed you are told to select "other". I selected "other" because my retirement plan (not my pension and not my social security). The next page asked for the name of that plan. The box into which this information was to be entered was dead. There were instructions in that box to enter the name of the institution. The letters were red and the box was dead.

I went back multiple times and tried to add the extra 1099-R and after careful reading could not find another way to enter the data. As a result my income is seriously understated. I tried to get the online or chat help and the cost for that is $40. It is nuts to have to pay for information about why the program doesn't seem to be working. After spending time carefully entering the rest of the information, I now have to start over with another program.

This year my simple claim I went in to do and did the 179$ costing refund plus loan price I had no deductions or anything hard. I was told that I would be able to get my loan for this amount never was I told they now are doing Axis bank credit checks bc if they had told me I never would have paid 179.00 dollars for something I could do free because I know I would be denied. Sneaky, very sneak beings.

They let me believe it was like any other year. I feel so ripped off bc they most likely knew I was denied when I asked about the high price and asked if there was anything that could prevent me getting and was told just if I met criteria it would be same day. They text me that I was denied five minutes after I walked out. This should be against the law. Nowhere on the site does it tell us they now do credit checks.

I have used the H&R Block on-line free tax prep for a few years. I think it is very easy to use and understand. Last year I had to file a 1099 MISC, so the "free" turned into $19.99. Irritated, but paid it. This year for my 2019 taxes, again, I needed to file a 1099 MISC. This year the cost is now $49.99! Turbo Tax is charging $40. I refused to pay that much since all I needed to file for was $19 for a General Motors retiree service. I went to IRS.gov, used one of their recommended sites and got my 1099 MISC filed for free!

Grant you, it wasn't as easily understood as H&R Block, but I wasn't going to hand them 50 bucks for something that easy, nor was it that involved to where it was going to change anything or change my refund. Maybe they should charge by a case by case of how involved it is. Normally I would give them 4 stars. If I could it would be a 2.5 now. For the simple 1040 without any "extras", it's great. If you don't want to pay the exploded extra charges, shop around or go to IRS.gov.

My wife and I have been filing for some years with the rural office here in Crockett Texas. We always paid for the better service just in case something came up. We recently received a notice from the IRS billing us for over $4,500 from our 2017 returns. We provided all the forms required for the return but Block overlooked one of the forms. We received a large refund that year and I asked them to double check the return to be sure. They told me it was fine. Upon receipt of the bill from IRS, I went back to Block (the franchise has different owners now) and they rechecked the entire return.

The new figures show we owed close to $6,000. However we were assured that our "Peace of Mind" insurance would fix things because it was obviously Block's error and not ours. Two weeks later we received a form letter from Block denying our claim. We talked to the office in town and we are told that Block is denying ALL Peace of Mind insurance claims from franchise locations. The only claims they are honoring are from corporate locations. If that is the way the program is set up then why were we allowed to purchase this "protection"? My wife and I are both on disability and have zero savings (due to medical bills) to cover this problem, and we certainly have no resources for an attorney.

Do never trust H&R Block. I trusted them for my tax refund and it was a complete disaster. Several months of paperwork for a completely wrong result. I, first of all, explained my situation and asked for a budget for their services, and they said between 80-95$, which I thought it was expensive but acceptable. After the service was done, they gave me my tax files and their invoice, which doubled the budget they gave me in the beginning, saying that they didn't expect some of the paperwork they had to do (although I exposed all about my situation at first and having almost daily emails for weeks, they couldn't have explained this increase of the price before..?)

The worst part is still to come: their work was finished (and I, of course, finally paid them) and, although I was expecting my refund to be negative (so that the CRA was owing me money), their conclusion was that I was owing almost 2.000$ to the CRA. I asked for some explanations about this because I didn't find any logic in that because of my situation. Two other people of H&R answered to the questions on my email, supporting the conclusions the 1st consultant gave me. After all, I accepted and faced the "debt".

After months, CRA reviewed my tax refund and turned out that it was completely wrong. Not only I was not owing them that big amount but they actually owed me more than 1000$ dollars. So.. what I got from H&R was: poor service, unprofessional results, unexpected invoice (different from the first budget without justifying), long months of worries for no reasons and useless answers to my concerns.

Take into account that I don't currently live in Canada and English is not my first language, so all this process has been really had to understand, to deal with and to go through. All of this for nothing, because they don't care and don't understand that you trust some professionals when you are lost but they give you more things to worry about instead. I hope this will help other people to avoid the mistake I made trusting H&R block.

I was told the best thing they can do for me is to reassign me a new tax pro to work on my tax. What a waste of time. I am not going to use H&R block again.

I've used their tax prep software for over a decade, and ALWAYS been impressed with the ease to complete it, search for forms, enter info, etc. Our life underwent several changes all at once, so it resulted in us filing VERY late for one prior year. Due to that lateness, electronic filing was not supported, and I TOTALLY understand how that would be the case. What I DON'T LIKE, was that once the software determined a paper return was necessary, it did not transfer our pin #'s to the FEDERAL paper copy automatically (it DID do it for the state return), nor alert us to do so. As a result, the IRS processed our return in an extended expected timeframe, & we will wait even LONGER for our paper refund check because the pins weren't on the federal return.

If there was ANY INDICATOR H&R Block utilized, I would have CERTAINLY wrote-in the PINS - I thoroughly checked my return for all the elements they recommended, but they do NOT include one to ensure a direct deposit can occur. This omission delays our refund for additional weeks. While I acknowledge this glitch, I WILL STILL use H&R Block tax software over ANY of their competitors!

When I attempted to do an amended return, again there was no provision to enter the amount. When H&R Block presented the amended return it turned out to be a request to get my entire tax payment refunded. Obviously, I did not send it to the IRS and now have to do an amended return on my own. The "HELP" was useless.

It took H & R a month to respond to my reassessment. They indicated they could not find my husband file. I had to write a threatening email for them to respond to my reassessment. Two months after my conversation with H & R Block, I phoned the CRA to inquire about my TAX. To my surprise, none of the documents were mailed to CRA. I had to do this myself. I will not recommend H & R Block to anyone. I have learned my mistake. I paid $ 500 to avoid the hassle and time, which was a waste of money because they did not do their job. The reviewer phoned on time, but stated that she only had 1/2 hour to give me. They are supposed to review your entire tax return and be prepared to answer specific questions that you give them ahead of time. I asked them to focus on the T777 (employment expenses), as well as to let me know at what level of income OAS would entirely be clawed back.

Re: the T777, the reviewer totally missed the fact that I had not entered my mileage rebate from my employer. This would have been a red flag for CRA. I told her about it. Re: my question about OAS, she did not know. The rest of my queries were technical issues that could have been answered by my Priority service, which I already paid $29.99 for. I had another question about my RRSP balance carried forward. She gave me only 1/2 answer. I phoned CRA and got a full answer, for free. In summary, if you have any kind of tax savvy, you will know more than the Expert Reviewer. So I decided to mail in my taxes but before filing taxes via paper I just wanted to give TurboTax a shot as today is last day for filing taxes. I just logged into TurboTax and filled all the details all over again, but TurboTax has good integration with my stockbroker and I didn't have to enter manually. It pulled everything correctly.

Also my Federal return was much higher in TurboTax and calculated my state Tax with Penalty (which I expected) correctly whereas H&R said I didn't owe a penalty. I submitted my Taxes via TurboTax, first time they were rejected but it showed what was wrong, whereas H&R didn't. I submitted second time after correcting and Hurray my taxes were accepted within an hour, whereas on H&R it took almost 3 hours for an update. Although TurboTax charged me $35.00 more the experience is much better.

Well...other than the fact that I had spent a couple of days learning the system and completing my forms on H&R Block, I called the customer service agent to remove an Ask the Pro ($39.99) from my cart, since apparently as a customer you are only allowed to put things into the cart and not out of the cart. Just to give you an idea of what my cart looked like.

I had the normal federal charge, two state charges, a Pro Tax Review charge, and an Ask the Pro charge. I asked customer service if a Pro Tax person is going to be reviewing my charge why do I need Ask the Pro? I asked her to remove the Ask a Tax Pro. She promptly deleted both tax pro services, which automatically deleted ALL of my information. Arghh...whatever. Took it as a sign to go back to my CPA. After all, my CPA charges $300 and H&R Block was already up to $249. My advice to others is to (1) be on the lookout for all of the hidden or added fees "necessary" to file your taxes, (2) don't add any service to your cart that is already included in another mandatory service, and (3) take anything more complex than a couple of W-2s and a 1095-B to an actual brick and mortar CPA.

I'm a dedicated H&R Block software user for several years but have on occasion had procedural questions about the software. For the most part, you can forget about getting any useful customer support from H&R Block. If you have a rather simple tax situation (salary, interest, dividends, simple deductions) the software for the most part seems to do an adequate job, but then so do most of the other known tax software programs on the market.

Today, I had two questions about the software: one involved a bizarre warning about an audit risk (none of whose criteria fit my return) and the other involved a seemingly erroneous transfer of information from the federal to the state return, which (in my insignificant opinion) would have resulted in an overpayment of state income tax. When I called their "customer support" number, I had a wait time of nearly an hour, but "Ciera" did eventually pick up.

However, she would not answer any of my questions until she got a bunch of personal information: name, address, etc. I told her that none of that was germane to my questions and asked for her manager, to which she answered that she would not transfer me to her manager until I first supplied all of my personal information. Moral of the story: H&RB is no better than other software for calculations, and appears to be awful for customer "support," so you're pretty much on your own. Keep your fingers crossed and be prepared to kiss away some money which you should be keeping.

We had used TurboTax for years, but switched preparation software for our 2018 return after several years of problems with e-filing and even printing returns (we were unable to print out copies last year, so had to manually complete a 1040 package using the information we could view online). Each year we receive several K-1s for partnership investments. Yesterday I sat down to enter the last one and discovered that the Premium software only provides 4 dropdown lines to enter detailed information from a K-1. The detailed reporting is required to properly categorize different income and deduction items for tax purposes. One line alone has a potential 31 subentries, yet the software only provides 4 lines for these entries. A similar problem exists with other lines.

My option? Not include all the information in the K-1, which now means that our return will not match information received by the IRS. And the tax calculations will not be correct. Probably not a good choice... H&R Block response? We only provide 4 lines because "most customers do not have more than 4 entries"??? Tell that to the IRS and maybe they will change THEIR form to match H&R Block’s. Question to H&R Block - have other customers raised the issue? Answer – yes. Proposed solution? None. Oh, wait. I was just told to print additional form pages and put into those extra lines the information that won't fit in the usual input structure.

Will my tax due be calculated from the forms (with added information) or the input screens? H&R Block doesn't know. I think I do - my "Federal Owe" number hasn't increased by even a penny after additional income was added. So, H&R Block, your workaround only gets numbers onto the paper, but doesn't include that new income in its tax calculation. If I use your suggested approach, I will both be underreporting and underpaying. My new option? Start all over again with TurboTax (which at least had enough lines to handle the input or they used to...) and get ready to write-out that hand copied return. Save your money...and your sanity. Don't use H&R Block software.

This should have been a simple return. The only reason I even have the premium edition is my small freelancing business. We don't itemize. After all of the questions were answered and figures were entered on the interview pages, the summary pages showed different and incorrect figures. After deleting and re-entering information numerous times in the self-employment interview, I called technical support. I was on hold for 90 minutes only to be told that the tech who finally answered would have to transfer me to a tech with a higher level of expertise.

After holding for another 50 minutes, I decided a chat might be more satisfactory. (Incidentally, there is no obvious way to get to "chat" from the information on the H&R Block Website. Fortunately, I thought to ask the first tech for instructions before hanging up. This involves setting up an account and going through several steps that you would never be able to figure out from the sketchy information on the Website.) In preparing for this chat, I went through all of the interview pages and made notes. I found that boxes were checked that should not have been and couldn't be unchecked. The accuracy review flagged "business name," even though the instructions said not to enter one. The business income summary showed no income even though I had correctly entered the 1099-misc information. The next time the summary showed a negative gross income in the amount of my expenses.

Another time it had doubled my income and another time showed only the amount from one 1099-misc. On another summary page, my unemployment tax would show up incorrectly one time, much more than it should have been the next, and then not at all. The self-employment summary page indicated my husband had a business, which he does not, but on the schedule C my 1099-misc information showed up under his name. The "accuracy review" continually flagged "issues" on Schedule C. All of which had already been addressed in the interview pages: name of business, "copy" box number, business code. I never did get speak/chat with technical support. I just kept going back to the interview pages and deleting and re-entering the same correct information.

I lost count of the number of times I had to do this. Finally, the accuracy review flagged no "issues" - until I went to the next step to "file" and there were 5 issues. These were blanks such as address and social security number that could easily be corrected on the 1040 form. Two positives: 1. The "take me to" icon at the top of the screen page was useful and easy to navigate. I used it many times to return to pages to re-enter information. 2. I had to wait more than 30 minutes to "chat" with tax professional Lawrence **, but he was extremely helpful once we got connected. Twice during the chat we were disconnected, (on my end) but I was relieved to find that when I logged back into chat, I was given the option of continuing the same conversation.

In summary: This is the fifth year I have used H&R Block tax prep software. There have been issues in the past, and while I felt the questions on this year's interview pages were more clear as to the information required, the technical issues were beyond frustrating. I spent way too much time on what should have been a simple, straightforward return and have serious doubts about using this software again.

I went to one in-person appointment to find out how much it would cost to file my taxes and was told a reasonable amount. When I came back for my appointment to file, I met with a different representative and asked to double-check my rates to ensure the cost and was told an amount that was DOUBLE what I was told initially! H&R Block is supposed to have upfront pricing, but apparently that does not mean it is accurate. Their rates are very high and I would recommend double-checking the cost they tell you during your consultation before filing or you may end up with a very large bill! Both the representatives I worked with were very kind, but I was extremely disappointed about the secrecy of the actual cost.

I will not be purchasing this software again. I had a question on how to enter some information in for my grandson's taxes and I tried to reach the 'advertised' 24-7 support with a tax expert via chat. After 2 phone calls, one hour, several attempts in the program itself, I gave up. Everyone I reached said that they were an HR Block program expert not a tax advisor and therefore, could not assist me with my tax question.

They advertise 24 7 tax support but make it nearly impossible to obtain that support. Other than this issue, I've used their software for several years now and was very satisfied. The thing I am not too keen on is how they advertise expert help is available to you when you purchase it making it seem like you are also purchasing free tax support when you buy their software.

I spent five hours on the phone, I was transferred to different individuals, none of them were able to help and they DID NOT CARE at all. One of the supervisors told me that similar happened with his tax returned, but he didn't inform his managers, coworkers or customers. The file generated by H&R Block 2018 filing is INADMISSIBLE. This is my 3rd year of using H&R Block software but I will not be purchasing again. They advertise and talk big about their support, but it is all bluster and show. Here are my complaints: 1) Their "chat with a tax pro" option is invisible, grayed out, having technical problems, or not available for months before April 15. If you are lucky enough to have the option functional, you will wait for 1-2 hours, even in February. 2) You will not chat with an accountant. It is a clerk or office assistant that they call a "tax pro." 3) You will not get an answer to your question. I recently asked where to enter a "K-1 excess deduction" since there was no option in the interview or on the worksheet under Misc/Other Deductions.

Also, Line 16 of Schedule A was grayed out so I wasn't able to input anything manually. The tech support (Riquan **. on 3/19/19 at around noon) said it wasn't a programming glitch but couldn't give me an answer on how to make the line editable or not grayed out. I wasted more than an hour. I then requested a supervisor and was connected to "DIY Tier 2" support (Lakiva **., 3/9/19, chat end time around 12:50 PM).

Again, no answer to my question. I was told to call their 1-800 number (I might get a person or Tier 3 support, she wasn't sure--I have the transcript) or go to my local H&R office (their default answer when they can't quickly determine a response). 4) The Business software is literally just a regurgitation of the IRS forms. There is virtually no explaining or breaking down of the language or concept. Where the "interview" exists, it is highly technical and repeated IRS language. Few help features. In most cases, you type directly into the IRS form itself. 5) There is no support or "tax pro" help. This isn't declared when buying the program; it's basically hidden away.

FOR YOUR SAKE PLEASE READ THIS if you are planning to use H&R Block online software. There are serious issues and H&R Block is doing nothing to inform consumers. I have used H&R Block online tax software for over 5 years with no issues. This year - very different experience. First, there was an entry field in the mortgage interest that did not allow proper entry of date. I verified that it was not my PC. I clicked on live chat and had explained my issue when the representative asked for a Block ID#.

I did not know how to find, nor did he tell me how to so I finally clicked on Block ID which signed me out and lost my work and live chat. After restarting my PC, I tried to sign back into H&R Block. When I signed back in, I could not get past the "go to last screen I completed". "Next" button nor "?" menu for live chat did not work. I spent hours on the phone getting routed to different individuals who could not offer much help or simply did not care to. One individual was at least honest and said that issues similar to mine have been reported since last week, but could not answer why H&R Block did not have the courtesy to notify people so they did not waste time entering data that they cannot then access to complete and file their returns.

Someone eventually generated a Tier 2 case # for me, but not sure how that really helped (I suspect it was only to pacify me and stop me from calling). The representatives said they could not have someone call me, nor let me know when the issues were fixed. They only told me to check back to see if it was fixed tomorrow. Great way to leave customers hanging. I cannot trust that this software will be operational or even work correctly to file my taxes (based on some other reviews I have read). So I will likely be starting anew with TurboTax tomorrow (again, based on reviews) or simply file the old fashioned way with a hardcopy print and submit.

I would have liked to explain to a manager all that has occurred, in the hopes that it would be addressed and other customers would not have to endure the same frustration that I did, but the representative said the only option to provide feedback was the survey. However, the survey cut me off when trying to explain the issue. I have never written a review, but felt obligated to warn others regarding my experience.

I went home very upset, did my research in less than 30 minutes and found out I was right. It took me over a week of arguing and excuses to finally get someone to listen to me and agree I need to file an amendment. They are supposed to have a 100% guarantee and that is not true. I was only able to get a $100 refund of my tax preparation fees. I had to make repeated calls to even finally get that. They did agree to file the amendment for free. Nice since it was THEIR error, not mine. The lack of knowledge of the tax laws is shocking. I strongly discourage anyone from using H&R Block software. First, it would not help me with the calculations required for Pub. 535 to determine if the healthcare expenses could be deducted against my income - it simply sent me to the IRS website! I managed to get past this one. But the one that really fired me up was when it said that I was not qualified for the Child Tax Credit because I already had a tax credit. This is only partially true; you can be eligible for a REFUNDABLE tax credit if eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit - which thankfully I am.

My income was below the threshold and I have three or more children which is a requirement. Ultimately, I am entitled to $1400 per child rather than the $2000 but this is a refundable tax credit. Nowhere in the software did it try to run me through the calculations to see if I was eligible for this credit. Had I not been aware of this change I would been out the $4200 credit! H&R Block should refund everyone who bought this lousy software!

The advisor spent less than 45 minutes, filed my forms electronically, and only THEN told me the cost: over $315!! Had I known that, I would have returned to the CPA! Afterwards, on the office's website, I saw a note that said "service prices are listed on a laminated sheet in the lobby." There was no such sheet, and I was offered no price list from either the receptionist or the advisor. I will NEVER return there again! This is a "get-you-in-the-door" scam. In getting ready to prepare my 2018 taxes as I do in a typical year, I pulled out my previous year’s taxes to review and was shocked to discover that the tax preparer had entered the incorrect number on the federal income tax withheld line. She entered that amount as $7686 when in reality the amount should have been $15,452!!! Her excuse for the error was that how Social Security Taxes were inputted instead of Federal tax withheld. The "tax professional" that helped us file seemed to have a lot of trouble entering our information and blamed the errors on the new system she was using. It appeared to be the same format you use when filing online (very simple).

Even with the trouble she was having it took us about 30 minutes to finish the whole process. We decided to E-file/direct deposit since this was the cheapest and fastest way to get our refund. We finished our paperwork and she asked how we wanted to pay, my mouth dropped when she told me the cost to prepare our taxes would be $415.00 (before the federal transfer fee) when the advertised fee was $59.99. It doesn’t end there, once I got home, I looked over our paperwork and she hadn’t added any of our itemized deductions. I now have to either go back and have my taxes fixed or sum it up to a very large loss. I wish I would have read the reviews before I went to H&R Block and filed them myself online like usual.

I've used H&R Block Deluxe for 10 years or more, and it is very easy to navigate to import prior year data, make new entries, recheck entries, verify entries for missing data, and electronically file tax return. Since I am a regular user, I am used to its format. I wanted to try a free TurboTax Deluxe online this year for comparison, and I was very disappointed, thinking that its features would be the same. However, I had some oil lease rental income this year, and when I entered the rent, a note popped up that said the Deluxe version didn't support this entry and I needed to upgrade to Premier version for $55. H&R Block's Deluxe version covered this entry with no problem. So, as you can imagine, I never proceeded further with TurboTax, and finished my return with my favorite H&R Block.

I also observed that the online TurboTax version was slow as compared to my computer run H&R Block program. I saw no way to navigate freely online, as it only proceeded in a step-by-step process. Perhaps there was a way to navigate easily, but I couldn't find it, and I stopped using the program after I found out that I would need to upgrade to a higher version of TurboTax. So, if you are considering purchasing a tax program, don't presume that all Deluxe versions include the same features. TurboTax costs much more than H&R Block, and this is also a major concern to me. I also saved money by downloading the email version from Walmart compared to the CD version. I think I shouldn't have to pay for a service that doesn't work. I attempted to e-file my taxes and the IRS rejected it several times over the EIC credit which required me to provide Form 8862. Despite several attempts at filing, I spoke to an H&R tax pro through online chat, and despite his advice my return still got rejected. I contacted customer service to have my product fees totaling $114.92 and she informed me that she would not be able to refund me the money. I asked her why should I pay for a service that didn't work? She informed me that she cannot refund me because I e-filed the first time. I will never use H&R Block again. My husband and I went to the Sanford H&R Block on 2/19/19. We usually do our taxes online but this year we had purchased a home. Trying to sort through the website and find the information required became a bit overwhelming. There were so many confusing questions so we wanted to make sure we were doing it right. Once we arrived, we were able to be seen promptly. We provided all our paperwork to the tax professional. She began with providing us costs upfront since they advertise everywhere “Know the price, before you start” and “no hidden fees”. We were told it would cost $99.00. We were sure to mention that we attempted to complete them online and that we just wanted to make sure we were doing it correctly.

Once the tax pro was about to finish imputing all the information into the system, they apologized because what we did at home was accurate. They felt we were wasting time and money having a tax pro complete for us. Since we agreed to the $99.00, we knew we had to finish. Once our visit was complete, we were provided a break down of our taxes for the year.

At that point, we were told there are extra fees since they had to complete extra forms. We were told these forms were not noticed on the price list prior to and our total is $189.00 and not $99.00. The service was average but we didn’t care about that. If a company as big as H&R Block hires people that do not know how to do their job, they should not advertise “no hidden fees”. They did not honor what was promised! Be very cautious of this as there are in fact hidden fees! We will not be using H&R Block in the future, nor recommending to anyone we know.

Then after I got to the part where you put in your W2 info I selected that and put in my wages, taxpayer ID, etc. Then at the very end it asked for a code? No explanation of what a code was? There was a help file and when I typed it in...it just came back with there are different types of codes...but again no explanation. I looked all over my W2 and there is no code number. So then after 10 minutes of frustration I thought I could leave it off and call someone. However, then found out there is no "save" function, which is ridiculous as I imagine many people might want to save the file if they needed to come back later to finish it. So I just exited it and lost the 20 minutes of all the info I wasted putting in my info online. No chat, email, or phone number to ask a question. Don't even bother with this.

Because of the stupid PATH Act that is totally screwing over people who get Earned income credit and Child Tax Credit by NOT even issuing tax refunds for these people until February 27th AT THE EARLIEST I really needed this RAL more than you know. I get all the way through the tax preparation and everything, pay over $400 in tax preparation fees and the fee they charge for the refund anticipation loan, to receive a text message and an hour and a half later telling me that Axos bank denied my refund anticipation loan, solely based on my credit.

This is a scam and it's so unbelievably unfair, because the people who need these RAL are poor or low income and almost all of them have children or are getting earned income credit, so knowing that they won't even be able to get their taxes until February 27th at the earliest makes the refund anticipation loan needed even more. And to have this stupid Bank denying People based solely on their credit because poor people and low-income people don't have the greatest credit to begin with no. It's just a scam. Back in 2015 an H&R rep (Devin from the Evanston, IL branch) helped us to prepare our taxes and made a big mistake that went unnoticed by him or the software. He included my wife's W2 as mine, based on which the tax forms calculated that I had a social security overpayment and was due a refund. This was not correct and, 1.5 years later we received the dreaded letter from the IRS that we needed to pay an additional $X in taxes plus additional late fees and interest.

A very helpful tax preparer (Ann ** from Wilmette, IL branch) at H&R block did help us to figure out what was rightfully owed to the IRS. Based on her assessment we still owed money but less than the $X the IRS felt was owed. She helped us to send the IRS a response letter with modified tax forms indicating the amount she felt was owed plus appropriate late fees and expected interest based on the date of the response and a check. At that time Anne successfully processed a Peace of Mind Claim to refund the interest and fees we paid.

Unfortunately, because we were paying less than the $X that the IRS thought we owed, it took considerable time, and additional back and forth letters, before the IRS accepted the final changes. In that process we accrued an addition $300 in late fees and interest. When we asked for a refund of the $300 under a new Peace of Mind Claim, the claim was denied with no reason for the denial. I asked the tax preparer if there was a stated policy that H&R would only pay penalties and interest one time, but received no response (moreover if this was a known policy then the accountant should have waited until final IRS notice to file the claim).

Overall, it is disgraceful that H&R finds it acceptable for us to have to pay over $300 out of pocket for a mistake that was completely their fault to start. As per a phone call we had at one point directly with the IRS, as I understand it, it is the responsibility of the tax preparer to pay fees and interest for their mistakes and if they do not then that is a reportable offense. In summary, I would NOT recommend people not use H&R Block; prior to 2015 I only used Turbotax and never had issues.
