I have the AA Advantage credit card with Citi, I got this card for airline purchases and to gain points with American Airlines. I had a flight cancellation while I was at the airport and when I tried to purchase new tickets (the whole reason I have this credit card) it was getting declined. I was told it’s because of the size of the purchase and they were trying to protect me from fraud but when I’m on the phone with them they could not verify my identity for whatever reason and told me I had to wait for a letter in the mail in order to verify my identity and continue to be able to use my card. I ended up having to use a different credit card to make my flight purchases. Do not use this company. Their fraud protection service is a joke and you will regret it!

I signed up for a promotional bonus of $500 to which 9 months later I still do not have. I called for the fourth time today in 5 months. The last person I spoke to was a supervisor who insured me I was compliant and should have received the bonus so he expedited it and I was suppose to have it in a couple weeks. 3 months later, still no bonus for opening a checking account. Today I close my account along with my credit card, I can not trust a bank that operates like this. And one more thing I had to call because my account kept disappearing from online and I had to call twice to troubleshoot to no avail. Never again.

If I could give negative stars I would. Moved to the country 7 weeks ago. Have a joint bank account with my husband. His account card works, mine does not. I am up to my 5th card. They keep telling me that there is no issue. When you call, you have to be verified - fair enough. First they ask your card number, then they ask for the last 4 digits of your card number - despite just giving them your full number (last 4 digits included), then they ask for your account number, then your name, then to list all signers on the card.
Each time you get transferred (which is a lot as no one can help) you have to go through the entire process again - despite being on the same call. I even had to do it twice to the same lady. When they can't solve your issue, you ask who can - they have no one. They are rude and incompetent. Avoid this bank like the plague. We have had too many issue to count. The banking system is archaic. Their staff are unable to think critically, lack empathy and common sense. Run.

I have been with Citi since 1998 (I will no longer be with Citi after this). I initiated a wire transfer (online) early Friday (I have wired funds in the past without issue). The wire appeared to go through. On Saturday, I received an email telling me my wire was on hold, and they needed to verify information. Spent a ton of time giving them information such as what the wire transfer was for, how I received my wire instructions (literally, who gave them to me and how), how many computers I use to check my account (the wire was going to Bank of America, to an American company in California). They did not even credibly verify my identity, but, given the probing questions, I confirmed it was Citibank. I finally get confirmation that the representative will contact the Fraud department and have the wire transfer finalized.
On Tuesday afternoon at 5:38 (Eastern), I get an email telling me they cancelled the wire. Almost two hours of phone calls later, where I could not get an answer as to what happened, I am finally told to initiate the wire again. So, I put another wire through online while I have the representative on the phone. The representative tells me she will assure it goes through. (In total, after long phone calls, I have been "assured" three times that the wire was being executed). I get an email this morning (Wednesday) that the wire is on hold and to call them again (and the number they send in the emails to call them is not actually the number you need to call, which you find out later as you are forced to call another number and verify all your information over again, and tell them the issue over again.).
So, called them again this morning where they asked the same questions, could not tell me why the past times I have answered have not been enough, why they were seeking these answers if all they were doing was purportedly confirming my identity (which were the first two questions of 20 they asked). (The entire time, I am online confirming it is Citibank because the whole thing is so bizarre that it HAS to be a scam? Alas, it is just Citibank.). I was finally told (again) they would push through the wire. So, I get to cross my fingers and hope that my bank deems my expenditures of my money up to whatever standards they require (I was never given any actual standard). And the entire time, I am risking losing out on a rate I locked. Banking should not a a full-contact sport.

Updated on 07/05/2023: I'd give this bank credit card a minus 5 if I could. After being told 3 times that a dispute that I had closed was reopened (3 times) without anything being done. I finally called the dispute department (after many requests for a phone #) and they told me that the online chat never did what they said. These chat people are offshore and DO NOT UNDERSTAND AMERICAN ENGLISH! Frustrated at best it took over 6 weeks to get my dispute settled in my favor since I never received what was purchased. I was so shocked that I locked my card and will probably close it down the road due to THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED FROM A CREDIT CARD COMPANY!
Original Review: Citibank has been useless regarding a refund on a purchase never received. They keep telling me the dispute was resubmitted on June 3rd yet 3 weeks later I have yet to received the refund!!!! Useless bank, useless customer care, useless chat!!!!

They did not honor the promotional deal after I opened online as instructed and then I found out this week that the country I will be in no longer has Citibank ATM’s so I end up having to pay the international fees using other banks. Any other citi checking account or debit card - It does not work either. 3. Alternate phone number- Why would anyone have 2-3 different phone numbers. 4. After all these failed, they send you some physical letters which never arrives in your mailbox.. I have been in lookout for that letter since long and I never received it.. This system is totally ** up.. Save your time and do not apply for this credit card.. I have other different credit cards and they have no such ** issues

Although Citi was still refusing to honor the promotional bonus during our last phone call, I am delighted to discover the promotional bonus appeared in my account this morning shortly after I reported to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) last week. I am happy this finally got resolved.

I met all requirements for getting a 450$ bonus for opening an accelerated savings account. I even called right after opening the account to ensure I am eligible for the promotion. However, after I met all the deposit requirement, Citibank will not honor the promotion, and refuse to give me exact reasoning for why I can not get the bonus. There is no direct way to talk with the people on the "back end" making those decisions for the dispute. In my view, it's a clear fraud and Citibank is purposefully deceiving its customers.

I recently had an experience with Citibank's customer service while trying to resolve a denial problem with my new credit card. Unfortunately, the level of service I received fell far below my expectations, leaving me feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. One of the major issues I encountered was the lack of effective assistance from the customer service representatives. It became apparent that they were located in another country and seemed unfamiliar with the necessary protocols to address and resolve the issues at hand. This made the process of resolving my problem unnecessarily complicated and time-consuming.
The verification process proved to be particularly problematic. Despite providing the requested information, I was unable to complete the verification through the text message system. Specifically, I had issues with verification via my AT&T phone number, which prevented me from accessing the benefits and functionalities of my credit card in a timely manner. This not only caused inconvenience but also hindered my ability to make timely payments. The most significant inconvenience in this entire ordeal was the delay in card activation. I was informed that I would have to wait for a physical letter to arrive, which would take approximately two weeks, before I could start using the card. This unnecessary delay further added to the frustration and hindered my ability to pay invoices promptly.
In light of my experiences, I believe it is important to approach Citibank credit card applications with caution. While I cannot speak to the experiences of every customer, my encounter with their customer service was far from satisfactory. The lack of efficient problem-solving, challenges with the verification process (specifically with AT&T), and the extensive delays in card activation underscore the need for improvement in their customer service operations. Considering the issues I faced, I would recommend exploring alternative options before applying for a Citibank credit card. It is crucial to choose a financial institution that prioritizes responsive and reliable customer service to ensure a smoother and more satisfactory experience.

I got my first business credit card through Citibank to help move money around. The time to use it came up while I was in the middle of moving and needed to squeeze extra cash out to get an investment to make some money that week and I had to pay down a $500 to complete the $1000 purchase and come to find out the hard way that Citibank transfers take 7-10 business days. I ended up going into debt with the money being taken out of my account, payroll hitting that week and unable to complete the investment so no money was made either.
I decided to give them another chance with a Debit account and I set it up online and put $1000 in the account they flagged me for suspicious activity but still took the money and nobody on the phone was able to pull up my account with my social or anything. I had to borrow money to pay rent and still trying to get that $1000 back. This establishment needs to be closed and social media needs to cancel this shady bank.

I recently received the enclosed IRS From 1099-C Cancellation of Debt for account number for calendar year 2022. This account was closed in 2019. Therefore, there could be no cancellation of debt in 2022. Furthermore, when the account was closed, the outstanding balance on the Checking Plus was 0. Therefore, there was never a cancellation of debt at any time. Please issue a corrected Form 1099-C and notify the IRS that the amount of debt discharged is 0 so that a Citibank error does not result in paying income tax on non-existent income.

I opened an online CitiBank Savings account to take advantage of attractive interest rates. After opening the account, I made two deposits on separate days, one for $1,000 and another for $10,000 for a total of $11,000. The life of the account literally only had those two transactions. After the 2nd deposit I was unable to access my account and was directed to their fraud department. During the correspondence I was informed the account was closed and not given any specific reason for the closure and it may take up to 60 days for my funds to be returned.
After further investigation I found that Citi is widely known for this type of predatory behavior among customers. During my research I found a number (210-357-4032) for the Citi executive response team. I talked with them, they were civil and polite, and I was able get a bit more information. They indicated the account can be closed without cause and they executed that right, but again, deflecting any real reason why the account was closed. They also indicated the funds may or may not be returned based on an internal investigation of which I have no idea what that investigation revolves around?
My concerns with all this are:
• I really don’t know if I’ll get my funds back.• The secrecy of these transactions seems incredibly predatory given that Citi is given an interest free loan for 60 days from x-number of customers (including myself).
• If the account closure is based on a concern that revolves around fraud and is indeed for my protection, there has been no outreach from Citi to rectify the issue.
• There is no due process regarding the Citi internal investigation which involves the affected party, in this case myself. My sense this is an actionable legal item if pressed?• With the state of the banking industry incredibly surprised, any bank would act in this fashion considering I was depositing funds into the account.
To me this represents a clear breach of the Expedited Funds Availability Act (EFAA) and would encourage third party intervention as part of the remediation. I have no concerns in regard to closing an account, my concern is opening an account and then holding customer funds for 60 days without due process or minimally a remediation attempt to satisfy the customer within EFAA timeframe.

For starters they promised me for months that they would give me back my deposit for my secured card. Last week employee even took my bank account and routing info to deposit my deposit via direct deposit. Yet why did they take my personal info last week? Seems a bit odd. Stealing customer's info and giving false information! If I was you I’d steer clear of this please! Go to a credit union!

Citibank is offering promotional checking accounts. I unfortunately signed up for one. I had clicked on the link that was provided on the promotional page and signed up for the checking account that way. I then called immediately after to verify that I was signed up for the Promotional Checking account and was told yes. I then deposited money into the new account and waited. A few weeks ago I called to find out if my account was earning interest and was told no because it was a promotional account.
Now, I am past the time in which the bonus should have been deposited so I called Citibank to find out when the bonus would be deposited into my account and....after being on the phone for almost an hour and with the representative going back and forth between me and the supervisor (I was put on hold at least eight times because I was not allowed to speak directly to the supervisor), I was told that I was not signed up for the promotional checking account and that I will NOT be getting a bonus. So....I went through all of this for absolutely NOTHING!! I am not sure why, when I clicked on the link on the promotional page and why when TWO different people told me I was signed up for the promotional account, why I am now being told I was not signed up for the promotional account and that they are not going to pay the promotion bonus. Needless to say, I closed out my account which they said could take up to two weeks to get.

I opened a Citi Savings account. I deposited 2 checks. Both cleared and showed as such in the statement balances. Then I received a notice accusing me of fraud (intention to deceive). I called the Fraud phone number and multiple times spoke with people with heavy East Indian accents that I could not understand. They never identified themselves. They could not tell me what I was accused of - said it was in the fraud process. They kept asking me for the phone # of the person who wrote the (missing) check. This seems suspiciously odd, nor am I giving out anyone's private information.
A month later Citi sent me the money from just one of the checks that was deposited, closed the account and zeroed it. I have sent multiple emails to their complaint dept, made multiple phone calls that are rejected because the acct is closed. No courtesy of a reply nor answer. I have copies of the front and back of the check for the amount that they are still holding. There is no way of contacting anyone. I have copies of all correspondence that I have sent.

I have been struggling with Citibank credit card since they questioned a payment to a landscaper three days ago. This kind of thing happened many times in the past and was simply cleared up with one phone call. This time, after more than usual effort including multiple calls and elevation to a supervisor, they restored my account and allowed the charge. Yesterday, they refused a charge to the same vendor. Despite escalating up several layers of management, I was told I have to wait until I receive a letter with a code, probably taking 7-10 days. This means all my recurring charges, e.g. internet and insurance, will be refused for 7-10 days. When I looked online to see why this was happening after over twenty uncomplicated years with this credit card, I found the Citibank credit card business was sold to Axis Bank in India in March 2023. On December 1, 2022 I called Citibank to inquire about a Flex Loan. The agent explained to me how the loan worked, and I said it sounded good. She then continued to tell me more about how the loan worked, and at that point I said I was not interested. It seems that the agent approved the loan before our call was finished and when I said I was not interested. I now had a Flex Loan that I had not approved. I called December 2, 2022 to ask how to rescind this loan, since I had not approved it. I was told it could not be rescinded, but if I repaid the loan it would go away. On December 5, 2022 I repaid the loan in full, but it did not go away. I have spent three months calling and filing dispute letters, trying to explain that I had not approved the loan and that I had repaid it in full. No one would listen or try to resolve the matter.
I finally filed a complaint with the BBB on March 14, 2023. I received a call from a man in Sioux Falls, SD in the Executive Response Unit who said Citibank had been contacted by the BBB regarding my complaint about the Flex Loan. This was the first time I was able to speak with someone in the United States. He wanted to resolve my complaint right away. This was the first time anyone took any interest in my complaint. It took me three months, numerous phone calls, a dispute letter and finally the BBB to resolve this matter.
It is now resolved, but I am left with a very negative opinion of Citibank and how they do business. I was burdened with loan that I did not approve. I was told that on my phone call inquiring about the loan, my saying it sounded good triggered the agent to approve the loan before our conversation was finished and when I ultimately said I did not want it. Is this how Citibank operates? It is a most dishonest business practice and I will be closing all my Citibank accounts.

Worse yet, the agent didn't tell me I would be charged a monthly fee thereafter...
Their website is even more terrible than their customer service. Just because the site looks a little less dated with some modern icons doesn't make it any easier to use! Nowadays they don't even offer chat or email contact which is a huge drawback in this digital world. I have many friends with accents and understand them, but people at Citibank centers are nearly impossible to understand. They need to speak slowly enough so we can figure out what they're asking. Later I had 4 garbled messages to call Citi Fraud Prevention but the number given was impossible to understand or did not work. Citibank is not serving its banking customers well.

I know that Citibank has gotten some negative comment but personally, I couldn't be happier with the features, ease of use and terms they provide. I have a checking, savings and a Citi Double Cash credit card and after one simple phone call to their customer service over a year ago, they all operate flawlessly together. And, no, I'm not someone with a heavy financial portfolio. I've been down to zero dollars plenty of times in my checking account. But depositing any check, from any number of banks that my customers use has been 100% successful and the funds are available within seconds no matter what. Now THAT can't be said for any other bank. Personally, I find Citibank to be perfect for my needs and am really glad I decided to give them a try after Credit Union mishaps and ridiculous inconsistencies at other other major banks.

The customer service couldn't be any worse. They know nothing and can help you with nothing. If you do not have access to a branch you are screwed. They hold money and customer service can't do a thing to release it. I wanted to send multiple Zelle transfers. They held the money and wanted me to wait 14 business days for it to resolve itself. I sent several wires to a title company for a home purchase and out of the blue they hold one of the wires. Customer service can't do a thing to help. They have limits on wire amounts unless you walk into a branch but they don't have branches hardly anywhere. They are worthless, really and truly. They have no inside information or authority. You will learn nothing new when you call customer service. I could be a customer service rep for them with zero training. I should have closed my accounts long before this review so shame on me for sticking it out with such a terrible company.

I opened a checking account. I transferred monies from my other accounts to fund the account. Once the funds cleared, I paid numerous bills. The next morning at 8:00 a.m., my account was marked for closure. My funds are non-accessible. I cannot see my account information, transactions, where my money is, how much. My bills were not paid due to reversal, so I incurred reversal fees, late fees, and interest.
When you call customer service, they are often in India and cannot explain a single reason why the account was closed. Only that I will receive a letter detailing the reasons for closure and the remaining funds will be mailed separately by check... which I cannot verify the amount due to being locked out of my information on the account. You have to call their "executive response" team located in the USA and ask to speak with your account's analyst to get any information at all. This person was not available to talk and I have not received a call back from her. Just an awful daunting experience that we as consumers are helpless to react to. I don't recommend Citibank credit card. I purchased a defective engine part shipped to Texas on my Citibank credit card from the California based ADV Cylinder Heads' (Seller) website. Eight days after receiving the defective item, I returned it to the Seller for a refund, however, the Seller failed to credit my Citibank credit card. In less than 30 days after making the purchase, I contacted Citibank customer service to file a dispute and I timely submitted a written dispute to Citibank Sioux Falls office as instructed on the reverse side of my credit card statement.
However, rather than reverse the Seller's charge of nearly $380 and credit my credit card for the returned defective item, Citibank instituted collection measures against me including late fees, and repeated collection phone calls. Citibank also reported my account as delinquent to credit bureaus causing damage to my excellent credit rating causing my other credit card interest rates and my automobile insurance rates to increase.
Citibank failed to acknowledge my dispute even though I followed all dispute procedures and contacted them multiple times in addition to repeated requests made to them during their debt collection calls. Finally, eight months later with the help of the FTC consumer protection division, the Citibank Office of the President stepped in and issued the long overdue credit to my account. I filed a dispute for fraud on my account and then Citibank turned me “ the account holder” into the fraudster. Citi bank locked me out of my accounts after filing a dispute… stating I couldn’t provide the correct answer for a security word. I have never set up a security word or question and have never been asked for one until this time… understandable due to a report of fraud. I immediately went to a branch to confirm my identity and verify account information on November 19, 2022. I received my new bank card 11/22/22, activated it and again went to the branch after attempting to access online banking which I was not able to do.
Left the bank with access to online banking and later attempted to make a purchase which was unsuccessful. I called customer service whom laughed in my face, made sarcastic statements, and hung up in my face after waiting over 2hours for help. During this entire time I had access to at least view my account… after they hung up in my face I no longer was able to see my balance or use online banking. The representatives were attempting to verify my accounts with a phone number that I numerously stated to them was no longer in service. I had updated my current phone number when I visited the bank that day on 11/22/22.
The rep named Levenkee stated to me to update my phone number with “public records” which I have never heard and actually is really absurd … because how. Stating the service they use cannot verify my phone number and to call back to speak with someone else. I requested a supervisor who, when answered, went by the name Mark and hung up on me. After the call I no longer had access to my account online but the representatives only attempted to verify my accounts information via telephone number and a security question/word… which Later was given a hint for and answered successfully. When I gave them my mother's maiden name, they told me that answer was wrong… on their w.
There were several other ways such as ssn, email, recent transactions, etc. If someone calls in with my phone number that is no longer mine… they can access my account information. On their web page it states that I can contact them if the answer to the question has been forgotten “although I never set this up” and I did not get that help. They passed me around and blocked my access
On November 23 I went into the branch 3 different times and was not allowed access to my account, even in person after providing My Identification. I had To Reach out to the executive response team who did help get the account access restored on my 3rd visit that day. On November 29th a transaction was declined for a little under $500 to pay a bill online. I was out of town and when I called customer service once again they told me that they could not help me and that I needed to call back with a verified number. The number listed on my account is my own, and was updated at the branch. It's not at all my fault that whatever service Citibank is using can't send me a text.
Here I am out of town without access to my funds. This bank plays with people's livelihood. The reps told me again to wait to receive a letter with a reference number, while in the meantime unable to use my account. I went to a branch once I made it home, asked to withdraw my money and was denied. Once again IN PERSON. The process is absolutely ridiculous. After all of the information used to obtain an account, Citibank decides that the only means to verify an individual's identity is by a phone number, which can change often. None of this would have been that much of a huge deal if I were able to go into a branch and verify myself, withdraw from my account, while awaiting a notice. However that was also made difficult, as I was denied access to my account in person multiple times. SAVE YOURSELF, You cannot report fraudulent activity if it should ever occur. You will certainly be treated like the person committing the fraud.

The same wire has gone through half a dozen times since the accounts were set up.
First this should never have happened on an inter-bank wire. Second, a bank the size of Citi should have reviewed and released within a week not two months and counting. With over 30 hours of holding, being hung up on and attempting to communicate with agents with an extremely poor command of the English language, I've not spoken to anyone who seems to really give a damn. Don’t trust Citibank. Doesn’t matter how good of a history you have with this company. Good credit limit, great payment history with this company doesn’t matter. My whole family had COVID, I had two neck surgeries, a back surgery, physical therapy, several epidurals and all the diagnostic procedures necessary. Yes I depleted my savings and had a few medical bills go to collections which I have paid. And yet Citi did a review and dropped my line of credit over $9,000, even though I had great payment history with them, dropping my credit score and making it harder to recover. Why? Because this company can care less about their customers. I’m going to cancel both my cc and savings account and I advise you to take your money elsewhere. Btw I called after the credit reduction and was told they couldn’t fix this and referred me to a 866 number to resolve, yeah that was Equifax. See, your history with them means zip.

Carrollton Texas, checking account. I opened an acct 2 weeks ago and within a week Citi closed my account terminating my relationship with them for no valid reason. My new acct was opened and I only had access to my online acct which I was able to set up direct deposit and Zelle. Within 2 days from activating my online access I paid my rent using my bank acct number because I did not have my debit card. That is the only transaction besides the Zele transaction I made to acct to pay my rent via bank acct and the next day I get an email that my acct is being closed due to me violating my terms per client manual.
So my rent didn’t go through because they froze my acct and they almost caused me to get evicted from my home. I had no extra $2000 laying around and I had to borrow to get my rent paid while they are holding my money and advising me I have to wait 60 days for my money. It is unfair and they don’t care about their customers. I called every day and they gave me run around and even hung up on me multiple times and I was very professional but I’m tired of them treating me like I don't matter. It is upsetting that a bank can hold your money without giving you a valid reason. It’s day 9 and still have gotten nowhere with Citibank. There is no local bank in my state so my hands are tied. I don't have such a card from Citi nor do I want one. Called 3 different customer service numbers (India) no help. They insist I be mailed a debit card (5-7 days) to access my online account. I wish to do a wire transfer of funds TODAY. Shockingly there is no human mechanism at Citibank to accomplish. I must wait for the debit card to arrive, register it online and then maybe I will again have online access where I am sure I will encounter more issues to transfer my $. I am going to close the entire account.
Do not deal with Citi in any fashion. They have no branches in most states, mine (Alabama) included. Chat and telephone customer service are worthless (after waiting 30 minutes on hold). I found that the folks on the call were not listening and more or less working through a state-diagram. A case was ultimately opened, and I was promised to receive in mail the outcome. This did not happen. Another call was made, another 2-hours wasted. The escalation path takes you to another powerless representative.
In the end, Citibank claims that I had another account open at the time of promo. When we dug into this, it was an account from five years ago, which I requested be closed, however Citibank did not close the account but instead put it in a hold status with $0.22. There is not log-in or feedback for this, and TMK the account has been closed all these years. As the promo stipulates no active C.B. accounts in the previous 180-day period, I'm left having obtained near $0 interest over the past nine months on 50K and also no promo. Insult to injury is the 7-8 hours on the phone over the previous 4 months. I will never again make this mistake with this company. sent new card
Original Review: Sept. 21, 2022
On September 16th 2022 I lost my Costco CitiBank Credit Card in Riverside, Ca. I IMMEDIATELY called city bank and informed them of my situation. I DID NOT want anyone to make unauthorized purchases on my card. (I was PROTECTING citi bank.) I spoke to a customer rep. who in turn handed me over to another woman. I was grilled for over 30 minutes by her in order to make sure that I was the card holder. (Overkill) I informed her that I needed to have a replacement card the next day as I had prepaid my three days at two hotels plus gas expenses. (PREPAID $ 525.00.) She assured me that I would receive my new card at my daughter's address.
Saturday came and went and I called Sunday morning only to be told that they would mail me a new card Monday or Tuesday. By this time I had spoken to at least 5 customer service reps. Everyone told me how SORRY they were. It is now Tuesday night the 20th and no credit card. On Monday the 19th I was informed by a supervisor that he would IMMEDIATELY send me a check for the prepaid balance and I would receive my new card by Wednesday. The customer rep that I just spoke to this evening the 20th just informed me that my refund request needed to be reviewed first and that would take 7-10 business days. 7-10 business days to return money that DOES NOT belong to them. I have never ever had such a terrible experience in my life. I WOULD NEVER do business with Citi Bank. I protected them and they refused to be there for me. I cannot believe all the LIES that they told me.

The fraud department said they never got it. I signed it again weeks later only to find out they closed my claim due to incomplete processing. I went to the bank again and signed the affidavit again. This time the bank employee stayed on the phone and emailed the affidavit only to find out they had to start my claim all over again. Updated on 09/17/2022: I had reviewed Citibank once before on Consumer Affairs and I gave them a very poor rating. I have since amended my original opinion. I had two merchants put unauthorized charges through on my debit card. I called Citibank the same day. I spoke to their Disputes Department. On the first dispute, they sent me paperwork in the mail and asked that I provide more details and then send it back to them by a certain date. This took about a week, first my reception of the Citibank paperwork and then my sending it back by the requested date. I noticed that a bank credit in the amount of $100 had shown up on my bank account yesterday.
For the second unauthorized charge, they blocked my debit card and issued a new one. They sent it Federal Express and I had it the very next day. They also informed me that I would receive paperwork in the mail from the Dispute Department in a few days and that I should fill it out giving more details and send it back by the requested date. I also have the option to email the information to them, using the email address provided in the paperwork. I have no doubt they will get my other $100.00 back. The customer service people were sympathetic to what had happened to me and were eager to help me resolve the issues.
Original Review: If I could give this bank 0 stars, I would. I received an email from a merchant informing me that they intended to take automatic debits from my Citibank account of $100 starting September 3. This was on Monday, August 29. These debits were NOT authorized by me. I tried calling the company for two days and when I would dial the number, it would disconnect. My attorney, who will begin handling my financial affairs September 5 recommended that I call Citibank and put a permanent stop payment on the merchant. So five days before the first debit was scheduled to be taken, I called Citibank customer service and put a stop payment on the $100 debit from this particular merchant. I received an email confirmation from Citibank the next day and they had spelled the name of the merchant incorrectly, but I thought it was a typo and didn't concern myself.
On September 3, I logged into my Citibank account and $100 had be debited by this merchant. Furious, I called Citibank and was patient, explaining that they had let it go through and asking why. I could barely understand the customer service representative and the phone connection was garbled and very poor since it was overseas. He told me he could not guarantee that they could reverse the charge, but a provisional credit would be put in my account. He also recommended that I get a new debit card with a different number as this merchant had used the debit card information I had used when I made one payment to them in August, but then informed them my attorney would be handling all future payments starting in September. The merchant knew, but set up automatic debits anyway. I told him to block my current card and issue a new one.
I thought the problem was at least partially solved, as the merchant couldn't debit my account $100 anymore. I received an email from Citibank the next day informing me that my new debit card was being Fed Exed to my old address, even though I had informed Citibank of my new address and cellphone number when I moved nearly 3 weeks ago. They still had the old address and had not updated it. I called Citibank and explained that they had not updated my address and cellphone number and the representative insisted that to change it and send another debit card Fed Ex to my current address, he would have to send me a one-time passcode to my old cellphone number.
I patiently explained that I no longer had that number so he couldn't text me a one time code to that number. He told me to go online, log in and change my address and phone number in my profile, then call back, they would send a code to the new number and then another debit card would be sent out to the correct address. When I attempted to log in, the message I got was that Citibank had to send a one-time passcode to my old cellphone number to make sure it was me logging in. I called Citibank back, spent a frustrating hour trying to get this resolved and finally lost my temper, asking to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor picked up, but then the call disconnected, either he hung up on me or the poor phone connection disconnected the call. I called back and finally got a customer service representative who knew what she was doing.
She listened without interruption as I explained what had happened, asked me three questions to verify my identity, changed my address and phone number and told me a new debit card would be issued and as a courtesy, sent expedited shipping to the new address, but probably wouldn't go out until Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday. It has been my experience with Citibank that most of the customer service people haven't got a clue as to what they are doing or simply don't care. I have called and someone will pick up and say that they are updating their systems and to call back in two hours, hanging up immediately, not giving me a chance to respond. I have had ONE good experience with their customer service people, that being the woman who changed everything for me without insisting she had to text a code to my old cellphone number.
Take my advice - find another bank. Citibank doesn't care about their customers. I am going to close my account as soon as the pending charges on my account either clear or drop off. I will go to the branch to close it, and the nearest branch is very far away, but I don't trust Citibank enough to let my new bank link the accounts so they can transfer the funds from Citibank to my new bank, especially after the numerous one star reviews of Citibank I have read on here.

The ABSOLUTE worst is an understatement. I opened a citigold acct online and before I got card or banking info, my acct was hacked and thousands were withdrawn over the period of several days. For some reason Citibank allowed this and didn't see this as a red flag. I have filed a police report and noticed the credit bureau, FTC etc. I have spent hours on end with Citibank via in person and phone (most phone reps are foreign and seem to be be working from home as phone call sounds are typically muffled and inferior quality combined with fact agents barely speak English). Agents will hang up on you or put you on hold for hours on end to only refer you to branch or have no answer. Branch is just as useless and refers you back to 1800#.
Yesterday after being hung up on when inquired to speak to a manager I had it and went back into my local branch. Manager there (Melisis 'Mel' **) was rude and condescending. She told me they would not be investigating the fraud, nor would I be receiving a response, a reason or my funds and if I didn't like it sue them. Of course she wouldn't give me her business card or corporate info either. Basically just told in so many words, "You're out thousands so what not our problem and go ** yourself."
I am now proceeding with filing complaints to any and everyone to warn of this bank's shady illegal dealings. Imo they should not be allowed to bank as they are blatantly in violation of the law. Today I have husband who had a separate Citibank citigold acct close his out as well. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the headache and bank elsewhere as if you are in need of any assistance or fraud victim then you are your own and left without money stolen from you.

Because I have a Costco credit card through Citi Bank, Citi Bank sends me offers in the mail for checking accounts, claiming special rewards. It sounds very nice, except for the fine print. Nowhere does it say how much I might actually get. It only says up to a certain amount. Which actually means, Citi Bank guarantees to not pay more than this amount. So how much could I hypothetically earn? Who knows! Citi doesn’t divulge that information. After reading reviews on this very website, and more on others, there is no way I would put any of my money in Citi Bank. There are countless complaints of Citi freezing accounts, not paying supposed rewards, and more.
What I can say for certain is, Citi Bank’s call-center is in some strange foreign country, where I cannot understand what they say. Where my own money is concerned, everything must be crystal clear. Failure to communicate is not an option. So I will continue banking at Ally, where I can understand what they say and they can understand me. I’ve been banking there for years, and never had any trouble communicating with them. Apparently, their call-centers are in the United States and in Canada. That works for me. Useless call center. No one speaks English so impossible to communicate and they do not provide any service anyway. As for other business services that were requested and you are told someone will call you back from so and so department and no CALL BACK! My wife went through a very similar situation as the many of the customer’s who’ve written reviews. We tried to make a payment via Zelle to an individual for a purchase and the payment wouldn’t go through and then she was locked out of her account. She spent the last two days trying to get her account unlocked and she keeps getting transferred from one person to the next. Each one is less helpful than the last and it’s extremely difficult trying to communicate with them. They say they can’t verify her phone number, even though it’s the same phone number she’s had and they’ve had in file for 20 years. She’s responded to their texts and email and is calling from the phone on file and they continue to say they can’t verify her and won’t unlock her account.
They asked her who the beneficiary is on the account and what relation we had to the payee. Neither seems relevant. She’s spoken to over a dozen people and the account is still locked and our payment hasn’t been processed. We appreciate the security, but this has been ridiculous and unprofessional to say the least. We are changing banks as soon as we can.

Now I deposit the check in Chase Bank account and they have it hold for literally a week and a half all because Citibank couldn’t clear it, then I call their check verification line and they’ve been down for a whole week. Customer representative don’t make it any better because as I also saw someone state they don’t even have the knowledge of their own company because according to a couple of them there was no such thing as a check verification line, but when I spoke to someone else they provided me with the number. Overall just a little unprofessional to me regardless of anything and they like to argue with you that’s for sure lol.

Citibank itself is worst I have encountered, Citi declined my purchase attempt and locked my credit card on my first attempt to use it. And the nightmare just started. I called in 2 days asking them why my card is locked, the response I received is "they can't tell me anything because they can't verify me"; "they can't use my phone number to verify me and they also can't tell me why my phone number is invalid". They have to send me a letter via mail that takes ages to arrive because their policy doesn't allow any other ways of verification. Per the account supervisor "anyone who's close to me can get my address, email, birthday and SSN!" WOW. When I asked for an expedited overnight mail, I was told they can't do that either.
SO in summary, they declined my charge, didn't even send me any fraud alert, refused to verify me using a 21st century mean, and forced me to have a card that's locked for over a week for no reason. Entire policy is designed to ruin your day and week, and account supervisor is rude. I had other banks overnighted me new credit card because I broke it and Citi can't even overnight me that said letter which was due to their own ridiculous policy. Citi's fraud prevention policy itself is the biggest fraud I have seen.

So I opened a Best Buy account within the past 9 months. I use it and pay it off, so on and so forth. I have always made my payments on time, I have excellent credit, and have never had any issues with my two other cards that I have at other banks. When I called to inquire about my closed account that I discovered, I was told that it was closed because I had a returned payment. I knew exactly what he was talking about and tried to explain myself. What happened was that I made a payment to zero out my balance. The screen was loading and didn't go through so I refreshed it and made the payment again until I got to the confirmation page. This caused the payment to go through twice, when I noticed it reflect on my checking account days later I quickly called and got it straightened out.
Since I took that action it was considered suspicious activity and reason to close my account, to affect my credit score with no intention of reaching out and letting me know what happened and what they decided. I am beyond frustrated with this company and the reason behind it. I will never advise for someone to do any business with this bank ever again. This has decreased my overall credit limit, put a closed account on my record, will definitely lower my credit score, force me to lower it even more if I decide to get another card, and wasted hours of my time. All of this is because of a double charge that I wanted corrected. What a joke of a company.

Citibank offers balance dependent bonus each quarter for new savings. The steps for getting bonus are shown on the first three pages of the offer. You are required to enroll the offer, open a new savings account, fund the account within 20 days of account opening, and keep the balance for 60 consecutive days. In the past, the required “60 days” were counted from the day when your deposit is made. However, from 3rd quarter 2021, CitiBank changed the way for counting the required “60 days”. The new way is to count the “60 days” from the first day after the 20th day you opened the account. It means if you fund the account right after the new savings account is opened, you need to keep the balance for 81 days, instead of 60 days, to get the bonus.
For this change, what CitiBank did is to remain the first three pages unchanged, which look exactly the same as before. Big size and bold letters are used. The change is only made on another page, using small size letters. When you read the steps for getting bonus on the first three pages, you don’t see any change at all. It shows you only need to keep the balance for 60 days to get the bonus. Neither “a star” nor “a number” is added on the upright corner of “60 days”. Otherwise, it can lead the customers to the details about the change for counting days.
I was a loyal Citi Priority customer for more than 10 years, over trusted CitiBank, and lost vigilance. I didn’t think CitiBank would do such things. I enrolled 3rd quarter bonus offer last year. Since I get used to making deposit right after the account is opened, although the balance maintained on the new savings account for more than 60 days, no bonus is gotten. In addition, I lost the interest for two months. CitiBank’s interest rate is much lower than the rate of online savings. I am wondering if CitiBank was intended to do such a way to make a change, so that funds can be collected, but no bonus is needed to pay.

Please run away from this bank as fast as you can!! It is a deplorable financial institution that operates on the premise of defrauding consumers out of money to fill their own pockets. I was a customer for 16 years until the breakdown of this now ill-reputed bank. Also, against the law, they should not withhold funds from anyone being paid through the US Treasury. The latest and greatest disaster with this bank is that they sent me a check earlier this month from my closed account in the amount of $1221.87. Later I discover that this check is no good as I try to cash it and do a mobile deposit.
I called about this and was on the phone for hours, got transferred, and hung up on. Not to mention the amount of lies each representative tells; each one is different. I was told I need to mail the check back to them in order to deposit it, or use and ATM. There is no Citi ATM in my area that I wouldn't use anyway for this. There is no Citibank for thousands of miles from me. Why are they mailing me a check so I can mail it back for deposit?
This is ** backwards and a tactic to hold on to peopIe's money until they think consumers give up and let them have the money. I was also told that I wouldn't be able to do a mobile deposit for 90 days. So, a long story short, they are still holding my money and doing with a different scheme. I try to do a dispute about this and of course they would not initiate one. I told the representatives I would file a police report on this bank for fraudulent activity. I told them I want them to cancel this check and provide me the funds in my recently opened account. People are fed up with this bank and all of their messiness. I don't have enough words to express how low and disgusting this is. They all need to go to jail if you ask me. This is going to come back to haunt them, and I hope sooner than later!!

*Sorry for the long post*. I've never had such a hard time paying off a COLLECTION debt! I've been trying to pay off my debt since January but there is always something. In January when I called they said that the account was under "fraud investigation"- never explained! They said call back in 3- 5 days. I waited over a week to call back-nothing was resolved. I called again in February- the account was still under investigation!
To this point I'm feeling frustrated. I called this week to pay (months later) and it was finally cleared and I was able to "pay" the debt, well that's what I thought. I gave them my information - the information didn't go through-they said I had to call my bank to get it "approved" and to call tomorrow. I called my bank -which they found it was weird (so did I) and I found out that they were putting the wrong expiration date- when I clearly gave it to them correctly. I called today to resolve the issue and now the account it "under review"!!! Seriously. Now I have to wait until March 31 to try to pay the account. It shouldn't be this hard!!! On top of that- call center representative are kinda rude! Can't wait to pay it off so I don't have to deal with Citi Bank! It shouldn't be that difficult to pay off debt- don't you want your money!

I started a new Citi Priority savings and checking account online. My intention was to transfer $80k+ from my previous bank to Citi to get better returns. Was in a fix between Citi and Discover. Went with Citi, linked my old bank account for ACH transfers. Initially transferred $100, then $50k after 4 days. These were added as Deposits, not available yet. After a week - account is blocked, called Fraud Department multiple times - got a different answer each time. After 2 days Fraud Dept says account is posted for closure and they will not tell why. I was like what could go wrong?? I was just putting in my money - did not take a dime.
Well, my deposits are reversed since account is blocked and guess what - the automatic system detects that I spent $50k - showing me a negative $50k balance and gives me overdraft fee and a link to add funds to my blocked/closed account. Called a customer service agent - she says that she sees no fines on my account. I was panicking about losing my $50k. All this for trying to be a new customer. In case you are wondering, I have absolutely no blemishes on my records. No idea why they would close my account. After a week, I opened a Discover bank account and their customer service felt like heaven and very welcomed. Just don't do business with Citi and save yourself!

The coin was not only counterfeit, but also bent. I complained to both Paypal and Citibank.
Paypal asked me to provide to them proof of the coin being returned, as well as a copy of the postal receipt. They said they would reimburse me up to $100 for my cost to return the coin. I did so. They initially said I was refunded the $594.09 for the coin and $67.30 for the return postage. Then they informed me that since I complained to Citi, my complaint would be addressed by them. I asked what I should do. They said to cancel my complaint with Citi. I did so. I waited a few days and called them. They told me that since Citi had never informed them about any cancellation, Paypal was prohibited from addressing my complaint. I again called Citi. Citi told me that someone would contact Paypal. Citibank lied.
I waited another week and called Paypal. They said I should make another complaint with Citi. I did so. Initially Citi provided a refund of $594.09. I was told that my refund is listed as a permanent refund. Once again I was lied to by Citi. Permanent is supposed to be forever, not two weeks. Two weeks later, I received an email stating that since I canceled my complaint there is no longer any refund. I once again called Paypal. They told me that since this issue began they have never had any contact from Citi, and my issues are with Citi.
I use a credit card for protection and convenience. This experience has not been convenient, and Citi has refused to protect me from fraud and counterfeiting. I am a victim of fraud and counterfeiting. Hopefully my complaints and reviews will ensure that other consumers will choose a bank and credit card that will actually represent their client's interests, and not assist in fraud and theft.

I contacted them the day I received the email it was closed and they said, "Sorry, too bad, you’ll have to reapply." I had a different credit card hacked into this past year so I had to put a freeze on all three credit bureaus. As a result of having to reapply for the Citibank card, I had to go through the trouble of unfreezing the bureaus. After that, I spent the rest of the day on the phone with Citibank reapplying.
The next day I had to call them and they put me through 3 different departments waiting on hold as I had done the entire day before. In the end, they refused my application to reapply. I have over an 800 credit score consistently. They would not give me a reason and said a letter was in the mail. So for no reason that makes any sense, I was stripped of the 30-year longevity of credit, the 28k credit line and a hard inquiry had to be done. My due date is the 4th, so I was paying 8X the minimum in the month before, and they assessed me a late fee. This must have changed for 2022, because I have paid the month before EVERY month for years without any issue. When I argued this, the woman on the phone just kept repeating "you can't do that." If I have to pay each month's payment during that month and before the due date, that means I have a 4 day window to pay my bill every month. I told her this was a ridiculous policy. I insisted she remove the late fee (BECAUSE I WASN'T LATE), and I paid the balance in full. I told her I would NEVER use Citibank again, and I would be making this experience public knowledge. My wife and I applied for a credit card and were approved for a $1600 dollar limit. We came up short on my last paycheck because I was sick and my job has no sick pay. So in order to finish our Christmas shopping and get groceries to last us until my next pay day we went to use it. With tax our purchases came to around $440, well under our already approved line of credit clearly. It declined at the register, so we called customer service to try and clear it up. After waiting OVER AN HOUR my wife finally talks to a representative who says it was flagged as potential fraud and that they would send us a letter, but otherwise there’s nothing they could do to help us. Despite the fact again, we had not put ANYTHING on this card! So she comes to the car crying to tell my daughter and I that ALL the products we had picked out we couldn’t get until we received a letter from Citi Bank. I was absolutely incensed.
So we called back and after another 45 minutes of waiting we talk to another representative, and I demanded they come up with a better answer this time. So after waiting 20 more minutes we speak to a supervisor who says we can either wait for that letter, or provide them account information for another card or bank account to verify our already existing account and credit line with Citi Bank. That’s doesn’t seem above board to me, they’ve already issued a card and run a background check, why do you want access or info to anything other than that credit line.
We asked if there was anything we could do to verify our identity and fix their incorrect fraud claim. They said they could either send that ** letter I mentioned before, or we had to give them information about other bank accounts or credit lines. So I have a $1600 line of credit I can’t use at all and a weeks worth of groceries and Christmas gifts that some poor employee had to put back because they can’t reverse their own mistake. I had to borrow money from my parents and drive back to the store and shop all over again.
I have not been late or missed a payment on anything in 6 years and my credit was good enough to issue the card, so I fail to understand why they couldn’t simply unflag the transaction and let us buy our stuff. Now after all the embarrassment and time lost dealing with this, not only will I never ever ever use this card for anything, I plan to tell everyone I know until the end of my days to avoid this bank and any credit or service offered by them. The whole point was to help us get out of a jam. Thanks to Citi Bank my wife and my Christmas spirit is pretty much gone. We’ll be fine and we’ll still pay all our bills on time, as we ALWAYS do. But hell will freeze over before Citi Bank ever sees one red cent of my income.
We will be canceling the card as it is essentially useless. Why have a line of credit if you can’t use it? Why have a customer service department if they can’t fix anything? Why do they want access to my bank accounts or cards with other banks or creditors to verify anything? That is exactly what a scammer would say so even if it’s above board, it’s the dumbest policy in the history of credit card companies as far as I’m concerned. This company may be “reputable” according to credit karma, but they should be ashamed of their customer service policies.

Deposited checks business and personal, from the same customers (working with the same people for over 4 years), and Citibank decided to take 6 days to cleared them. It's a business account, I need that money to keep going. Why??? They said that they released a % on a schedule, but you can't used it, even though it shows as available, again??? I prefer to work with a more consistent bank, your check will cleared after 3 business days, at least you know.
