Worst bank I've seen in my life. They closed my account because I deposited a check under my friend’s name, my friend and I signed it. They closed the account and froze all my money for more than two months without a reason, or an error occurred in the cheque. Why did the rest of the money freeze and I lost a lot of buying a house because of this reason.

I attend college outside of the United States of America, and was advised by several people and institutions here in the USA that Citibank was the best card for large international purchases. Instead, it has been unmanageable chaos for the last six months. For the first two years, and most of the third, I was able to pay my monthly tuition easily and with no issues. Suddenly the payment stopped going through, and I had to spend over an hour on the phone getting the last three payments through every month, and now Citibank is refusing to let me use my card to pay, stating that it is the College that is having difficulty, even though they (Citibank) fully admit that they (Citibank) are the ones who cannot process it.

I have spent over three hours on the phone with customer service, the head of the fraud department, and now another nondescript supervisor, who have all stated that the problem is on their end, has then been fixed and/or bypassed, and have waited as I try and use my credit card, and it has been declined, again (and again, and so on), and so they have decided that it simply cannot be on their end, despite the system on their end being the one to decline the charge and not allow it to go through. They then turned around, after another 35 minutes being on hold, and said that it actually was the fraud department who were still blocking any charges from going through. They then backtracked, and admitted they had no idea what was going on, and then started patronizing and saying that they didn't really know what had happened but they were going to start to figure it out, this is after two hours that turned into three.

It seems as though Citibank has very little interest in making their credit card system actually user friendly for their own employees, let alone for actual customers. This has the unfortunate side affect of not allowing ANYONE to use the system in the way that Citibank advertises it, namely to make purchases, small or large, with ease, no matter how, where, or when one is doing so.

Being on the phone for over three hours, and then being told that they just cannot do anything, so it MUST be the other institution, despite there being no indication of that fact, is, in my opinion, an unacceptable way to run a company that works with the public. I did in fact use my debit card from another banking institution, and it worked perfectly, so this was entirely Citibank's own issue. I would highly advise to use any other credit card company, as Citibank cares very little about resolving issues, even repeating ones, and even less for the customers they supposedly cater toward.

This bank is the worst bank there is. I opened my account 2 days ago. I'm a ** hard-working business owner. I opened a personal account and soon as I deposited the account they closed my account. I deposited $1500 in cash in the account. I was going to deposit 3000, thank God I did not. They stole my money, closed my account and the customer service center is horrible and can't explain to me what's going on or why this happened, no notice, no nothing, no warning, no reason, just stole my money. The next day I had a appointment to open a business account with them, I will not be giving them my business at all. If you're a minority, stay far away from this bank far away. They will take your money, close your account without reason and fight on giving your money, stay away. This bank is ran by thieves...

Insufficient Verification in place for customers with no US phone number. I have a checking joint account which has been dormant and for which the bank charges $30/month. I decided to transfer the balance and close the account. Since the first attempt I made multiple calls, spent over 10 hrs, was hanged-up on, and was told that I cannot be verified as I do not have an American phone number. I am a Canadian citizen with a Canadian mobile number that all Citibank employees with an exception of one employee from the Fraud Dept. could not reach me. I was told 3 times that the transfer is OK to go through only to get an email that it is on hold and I need to call the bank for verification. So, I called again only to hear that they cannot verify me with my Canadian phone number. I was also told that my September bank charges will be waved but when I logged in, the wire transfer appeared on hold and the account had a negative $30 charge.

What is frustrating about this ordeal is the inconsistency process I have been put through. One employee was able to reach me by calling for verification and one was able to use my email for providing a code I had to read back. I have to say that the staff I spoke to was nice; however, based on the outcome I feel that they do not know the process or are poor on problem solving to resolve issues such as mine. I have hard time believing that in current times Citibank is not serving its customers with international phone numbers who left the country and are at the bank's mercy for verification. Even living by US border with WA State I cannot go to the bank as they do not have any branches there. Based on my experience, I highly suggest not to do business with Citibank as it is not reliable/consistent with customer service information and your interest is not their priority.

In June 2023 I opened an online savings account by depositing a check to me from a 3rd party. After processing the check Citibank determined it to be fraudulent and blocked my account. I spoke to the issuer of the check who informed me the check cleared the bank. Citibank is now holding the funds until they speak to the issuer of the check. I have gotten the runaround from Citi and even though they have the funds they will not release them until they speak to the company that issued the check. It has been 3 months. The amount of the check is $815.00. I will not ever recommend them to anyone for any online account. Their fraud department is the worst. They are not even offering me an explanation why they are holding and not releasing the funds.

I opened a personal check with Citibank. I never received my new checkbooks. At some point later on someone wrote a check for $550.00 or so. I contacted them by phone. They told me they needed to open up a new checking account and close the other that was compromised. Months later one deposited a check into that old account that Citibank never closed as they told me. Now they put a block on all of my accounts and told me they will be closing my accounts in 60 days. Ms. ** from the fraud department on Aug. 25, 2023, told me I needed to go to the branch where I opened up my first account. Please be careful doing business with Citibank. My experience with them has been horrible.

I have been banking with Citibank for ten (10) years. It has become one of the worst banks ever, poor services, Philippines customer services with crying babies in the back, poor banking services. I finally quit banking with them as they not only charge for banking but the services are so bad that there is no value for money. In Massachusetts they closed all branches from one day to another but even their customer services does not know this and they refer you to go into their branches. Worst bank.

Got this card for my wife to get her some credit started in her name. They only gave her $500 limit, but I figured you have to start somewhere, and it would be raised later on as she used the card. I pay it off as soon as she uses it to make the credit available asap so she can keep using it. CitiBank take the money out of my account within a day or two but takes weeks to apply the funds back to her account. It shows paid but it also shows her credit limit depleted even though they have taken the funds out of our bank. Don't bother calling customer service because the calls go outside the US to reps that speak broken English and are as useless as customer service can be. NOT WORTH DOING BUSINESS WITH.

I called Citi to cancel my husband's ATM card after he passed and they said they could only block the whole account, not the ATM card specifically. Since it is a joint account and I still needed to receive paychecks in his name, the account is exposed to fraud risk and knowing Citi, they will probably try to contact him on his dead cell number if a fraud instance does come up. I hope someone at Citibank's risk department sees this review so future widows don't have to deal with this.

I was offered a promotion to open a checking account, meet the requirements of making multiple deposits and use my ATM card for $1000 of purchases to get 60,000 rewards miles. The deal said after meeting these requirements, WITHIN 30 DAYS I would have these miles credited to my account. I accomplished all these requirements, which Citibank agrees, to not be told that the wait period is 90 days! That was not the deal I was offered! I made travel plans based on having these miles, which will now not be available to me. I have escalated to the bank and they just keep making up new rules without honoring the email promotion I received.

My wife and I opened a savings and checking account. The next day CitiBank closed all accounts and are holding our funds for at least 30-60 days. What a nice scam! All’s we did was transfer funds from another account. We have talked to numerous departments and went down to the local branch. They simply quote their policies. I ask what policy we broke they can’t provide that information. Although by law they must provide that information. We asked for documentation on their policies that we broke. Again they wouldn’t provide that information which is also required by law. I hope the government will start an investigation on what is clearly fraudulent. In the meantime until the CitiBank returns our funds we cannot provide even basic needs for our children. Just a reprehensible organization and I hope this review will keep others from experiencing the same situation.

I was told it’s because of the size of the purchase and they were trying to protect me from fraud but when I’m on the phone with them they could not verify my identity for whatever reason and told me I had to wait for a letter in the mail in order to verify my identity and continue to be able to use my card. The last person I spoke to was a supervisor who insured me I was compliant and should have received the bonus so he expedited it and I was suppose to have it in a couple weeks. 3 months later, still no bonus for opening a checking account. Today I close my account along with my credit card, I can not trust a bank that operates like this. And one more thing I had to call because my account kept disappearing from online and I had to call twice to troubleshoot to no avail. Never again.

If I could give negative stars I would. Moved to the country 7 weeks ago. Have a joint bank account with my husband. His account card works, mine does not. I am up to my 5th card. They keep telling me that there is no issue. When you call, you have to be verified - fair enough. First they ask your card number, then they ask for the last 4 digits of your card number - despite just giving them your full number (last 4 digits included), then they ask for your account number, then your name, then to list all signers on the card.

Each time you get transferred (which is a lot as no one can help) you have to go through the entire process again - despite being on the same call. I even had to do it twice to the same lady. When they can't solve your issue, you ask who can - they have no one. They are rude and incompetent. Avoid this bank like the plague. We have had too many issue to count. The banking system is archaic. Their staff are unable to think critically, lack empathy and common sense. Run.

I have been with Citi since 1998 (I will no longer be with Citi after this). I initiated a wire transfer (online) early Friday (I have wired funds in the past without issue). The wire appeared to go through. On Saturday, I received an email telling me my wire was on hold, and they needed to verify information. Spent a ton of time giving them information such as what the wire transfer was for, how I received my wire instructions (literally, who gave them to me and how), how many computers I use to check my account (the wire was going to Bank of America, to an American company in California). They did not even credibly verify my identity, but, given the probing questions, I confirmed it was Citibank. I finally get confirmation that the representative will contact the Fraud department and have the wire transfer finalized.

On Tuesday afternoon at 5:38 (Eastern), I get an email telling me they cancelled the wire. Almost two hours of phone calls later, where I could not get an answer as to what happened, I am finally told to initiate the wire again. So, I put another wire through online while I have the representative on the phone. The representative tells me she will assure it goes through. (In total, after long phone calls, I have been "assured" three times that the wire was being executed). I get an email this morning (Wednesday) that the wire is on hold and to call them again (and the number they send in the emails to call them is not actually the number you need to call, which you find out later as you are forced to call another number and verify all your information over again, and tell them the issue over again.).

So, called them again this morning where they asked the same questions, could not tell me why the past times I have answered have not been enough, why they were seeking these answers if all they were doing was purportedly confirming my identity (which were the first two questions of 20 they asked). (The entire time, I am online confirming it is Citibank because the whole thing is so bizarre that it HAS to be a scam? Alas, it is just Citibank.). I was finally told (again) they would push through the wire. So, I get to cross my fingers and hope that my bank deems my expenditures of my money up to whatever standards they require (I was never given any actual standard). And the entire time, I am risking losing out on a rate I locked. Banking should not a a full-contact sport.

Updated on 07/05/2023: I'd give this bank credit card a minus 5 if I could. After being told 3 times that a dispute that I had closed was reopened (3 times) without anything being done. I finally called the dispute department (after many requests for a phone #) and they told me that the online chat never did what they said. These chat people are offshore and DO NOT UNDERSTAND AMERICAN ENGLISH! Frustrated at best it took over 6 weeks to get my dispute settled in my favor since I never received what was purchased. I was so shocked that I locked my card and will probably close it down the road due to THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED FROM A CREDIT CARD COMPANY!

Original Review: Citibank has been useless regarding a refund on a purchase never received. They keep telling me the dispute was resubmitted on June 3rd yet 3 weeks later I have yet to received the refund!!!! Useless bank, useless customer care, useless chat!!!!

Although Citi was still refusing to honor the promotional bonus during our last phone call, I am delighted to discover the promotional bonus appeared in my account this morning shortly after I reported to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) last week. I am happy this finally got resolved.

Original Review: May 26, 2023

I met all requirements for getting a 450$ bonus for opening an accelerated savings account. I even called right after opening the account to ensure I am eligible for the promotion. However, after I met all the deposit requirement, Citibank will not honor the promotion, and refuse to give me exact reasoning for why I can not get the bonus. There is no direct way to talk with the people on the "back end" making those decisions for the dispute. In my view, it's a clear fraud and Citibank is purposefully deceiving its customers.
