What is APMEX?
APMEX is an Oklahoma City-based precious metals company that serves both domestic and international customers. It provides government-issued coins and bars, as well as jewelry, collectibles and investment-grade bullion items from more than 90 different mints and refineries around the world.
After you complete your second order through APMEX, you are eligible for the no-cost APMEX Club, which comes with benefits like early access to flash sales and an anniversary gift, depending on your membership tier. You will move up to different membership levels – unlocking more perks – the more orders you place, or if you hit a certain spending threshold.
APMEX also offers a seller’s program that’s open to everyone — not just past customers. It buys a wide range of bullion, numismatics, rare coins and currency, as long as it can authenticate the item. Shipping costs are deducted from your total, but for most sales, you will receive payment the business day after it arrives. APMEX requires its purchases to be at least $1,000, and it does not do not purchase raw ungraded pennies, jewelry items and unrefined precious metals, such as dust or nuggets.
How does APMEX work?
Prices are listed on APMEX’s website, with a live price ticker on the top of the page so you can know if you are purchasing at a good price. Customers can choose to check out after logging in to an account or as a guest. While there is no minimum or maximum purchase amount, APMEX does suggest contacting its sales department for orders larger than $500,000.
Opening an account with APMEX is free and can help you place trades faster and check your shipping status. You can enable APMEX’s AutoInvest program to set how often you invest in your favorite gold or silver products. While you can set which products you buy and how often, you cannot specify the dollar amount, so you will be charged whatever the asking price is during your scheduled buy.
MintDirect is a coin-grading service offered by APMEX. It ensures your coins stay in pristine condition in mint-sealed tubes. You will receive uncirculated, untouched pieces without any handling or searching.

APMEX has the HIGHEST MARK UP on gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Compared with every other seller APMEX is the MOST EXPENSIVE for gold, silver, platinum and palladium. The customer service is ok.... They really are trying their best. I know this because I've had to reach out to them often with issues related to billing errors. But most importantly, APMEX is the MOST EXPENSIVE sellers of precious metals.
Apmex has delivered products as specified, on time, great tracking communication. However, the portfolio tool is deceptive in regard to “current value”. Portfolio tool shows acquisition cost and current value but current value is apmex’s retail selling price, not what your actual value is. Apmex won’t pay retail or even give spot value for your product that you have to sell.
It’s relatively understandable that your product is valued at spot price; but why would anyone pay you retail price? AKA apmexs’ false impression your stuff is worth retail value. Portfolio tool does have a disclaimer in clear but small view to set the record straight. That’s how they get away with it. Since Apmexs’ current value of product is false once it’s in your hands… it really shouldn’t show it at all. It’s misleading regardless of the disclaimer.

I have used Apmex on several occasions with no issues. I did see one review where the coin was being shipped to the wrong address. That happened to me as I failed to update my address after a move. It was being shipped standard USPS, I called Apmex the next day to explain and they were really good about it. They put some kind of trace on it and got it shipped back to Apmex, it was then shipped out with the new address and all was good. Just delayed.
I go with a few major bullion retailers and Apmex is one of those. I always get my order in a prompt manner. The packaging of any bullion company is going to factor into the experience, and usually a vital aspect of security so that it doesn't get stolen or something. The sales section of the website is always helpful and they have an awesome selection.
This is was one of my yearly purchases from Apmex for silver and gold coins. They always have a great selection with many coins only they have access to. The box is usually a little big. So make sure your tracking your package and home at time of delivery or you suffer the chance the mailman just leaves your package next to the mailbox for any dirt bag to steal. Those are the times we live in now, not Apmex fault. All coins I've received from Apmex have been BU and well packed, just as advertised.
I ordered a couple of coins to add to a set I’m working to complete. I got an email stating that the company has not delivered the coin. I like the fact that they follow up on my delivery. I will continue using this company.

Updated to 3 stars because they did at least provide the refund properly. Still only 3 instead of 5 because they removed any future purchases I make from their insurance, despite me being the victim. It will never sit right with me to punish the victim of a crime. I understand why from a business perspective I would no longer be eligible for it, but I also disagree with it as it was completely out of my control.
I have been a customer with APMEX since 2011 with no issues until this last month. Ordered some gold from them that was stolen in transit. Filed a police report and everything they asked me to do. They did say they would refund my money (still waiting for the refund as of this post) even though I sent them repeated emails that I wanted the product instead of the money. Despite my protest, they also told me that any future products I should order from them will not be covered under insurance. WHAT? It's not my fault the product was stolen, so why the heck am I being penalized? So now if I wanted to make any future orders from them, it's not covered under insurance, despite them (to my knowledge) not having caught the person that stole it. That doesn't make me feel very comfortable ordering from them again.
What if it was an inside job? How am I to know that they didn't have someone in their facility steal it so they can make an insurance claim? I can't. They claim they will be having someone investigate, but I don't suppose I'll ever see the results of that investigation. The only other possibility is that was stolen by someone while in transit with the UPS, and again, I will probably never know.
It is my opinion that they are not a company to be trusted if they are going to punish their consumers for mistakes the consumer did not make. Also, I did try posting a review on their website only to find out that their reviews are filtered. I doubt they would let anything through that paints an ounce of dissatisfaction. Get your metals elsewhere.
I've had the pleasure of utilizing APMEX for multiple transactions, and their service has been consistently outstanding. The gold bars they offer are truly exquisite, displaying unparalleled craftsmanship. APMEX has earned my highest recommendation for their exceptional service and breathtaking products.
Delivered a day earlier than expected. Have dealt with them twice and very happy both times. Will be placing more orders. Love the packaging and the quality of the products. Everything delivered to me was as represented on the website.
Placed order and received the order within a few days. APMEX doesn't have e-check as a payment option, so I had to use Paypal. Other than that, it was a nice experience. I would like to see the payment options expanded like some of their competitors.
