I have been receiving French lessons for 3 months with Mr. Paul **. He pushes me but compliments when I am correct. After so many years out of school I was hesitant to start French again. I am so happy I decided to try Varsity Tutors. Studying French is like the Fountain of Youth. I look forward to the sessions and enjoy studying at night. The company management genuinely cares about their client's experience. After reading about my rough journey with Varsity, the company management team issued me a refund of my remaining hours. They have been very courteous, understanding, and accommodating.

Even 1 star is a high rating for this company. They originally sold me a high hour package telling me it was cheaper at the time of purchase. They reassured me that I'd be able to get a refund for my unused hours AT ANY time and still benefit from the discounted rate. I chose to give the program a try to help me prepare for an upcoming exam. The number of days before my exam were limited and I needed someone to help me structure my remaining time and quickly answer questions that came up on my practice exams.
The first tutor I was set up with wouldn't answer any of my questions from practice questions and wasted time on topics I felt confident in. When I tried to set up an appointment with a second tutor, I was completely ignored. The third tutor was only available at a time that conflicted with my schedule. I postponed cancelling the plan because of the time constraint studying for the upcoming exam. Just recently, I requested for a refund for my unused hours and was denied because I was "outside the 30 day window" from the time I signed up.... They never told me there was a 30 day window; had I known, I would've prioritized cancelling the service.

My daughter is taking math tutor classes with Ms Latoria since Jan'20 and it has been great. She is at Grade 8 and has more confidence in solving the problems now. The 1.5 hr per session classes are good time to do practice questions from the school materials. Ms Latoria also helps to solve some of the state wide math competition questions as well as showing the applicable practical short cuts. She has been also preparing my daughter for SAT. I highly recommend Ms Latoria for advancing your child's success in math.

We spent over $800 for 12 hours of private tutoring for ACT science and math. My daughter's score dropped in those areas. I am sure the company means well, but it is a huge risk. I felt like we threw away our money. I would recommend that your student study and strengthen their skills in the areas where they are stronger. Thankfully, my daughter made up those points in English and Reading. I would advise you not to waste your money.

In addition, I am very happy with the resources that he provided to help me for the test, which again, targeted specific weaknesses. He was very patient with me and helped me to understand how to think in regards to the test. I had already utilized another tutoring company and failed the MtEL before finding Kelly and Varsity Tutors. I was desperate to find a way to learn this material and pass this test without totally losing my mind. Kelly listened to all of the feedback about my prior experience and what I felt was and wasn’t effective. She worked with me to come up with a plan to get me through the test. Even though it took me two more tries to pass, the second I was only 1 point off which was a tremendous improvement already so we knew we were on the right track. Following that we revisited areas of weakness and adjusted our plans as needed so I was able to pass on the third try. I do not know how I would have passed this test without her and would absolutely recommend her to anyone.

Varsity Tutors provided a tutor to teach my 9-year old son Mandarin. We agreed on a one hour trial session, and I paid $71.00. Upon completion of the online session, the tutor informed me that she preferred teaching college students and she only teaches conversation Mandarin. Both Varsity and the tutor knew beforehand that my son is nine years old, and the sessions are intended to help him with with a school subject not conversational Mandarin. It has been almost a week since I alerted the Varsity team and no one has contacted me. I requested a replacement tutor, and if they can find one to reimburse the $71 I paid for the first session. Avoid Varsity Tutors like the plague. They are aggressive to make a sale. But once you have paid, good luck - zero customer service.

I ordered a number of in home tutoring classes for my twins, both in elementary school at the time. The tutor came and did well in delivering the classes. So I ordered 50 hours of tutoring at the cost of $3100.00. We then got a different tutor. She taught 4 classes in August of 2019, but then said she needed to take a few weeks off so she could focus on her master's degree. By mid-September I had not heard from her so I notified the company and was told she had quit. They would then provide a new tutor. That never happened.
I let some time go by hoping that the company would be able to provide a new tutor, which they did, but the tutor could not meet our schedule. Our schedule was any one or two days from Monday to Thursday after 4:30 PM until 9 PM. I asked for a new tutor. Did not get one. Gave the company more time then requested a refund. The company said that I needed to request a refund within 30 days of our agreement. They did not deliver, and now they won't refund. A big mistake on my part signing with Varsity Tutors.

We contacted Varsity Tutors to get assistance with preparing our 8th grade son for the High School Placement Test. Varsity recommended twelve sessions. But we were in a time-crunch and only had time to do six sessions - at two hours each. We have used tutors before but always in-person. Varsity recommended virtual sessions as they could more easily place us with the right resource for the HSPT. We were a bit unsure as to the effectiveness of online sessions.
Varsity placed us with Natasha. She had deep experience in HSPT preparation. And it turned out to be a great experience. She was able to quickly identify areas of weakness and address them. Probably the most significant and important aspect was her style and ability to connect with our 14 year old son. She had a very positive-feedback style, even and especially, when correcting a wrong answer. She left helpful notes after each session. Sessions are available online to re-watch. And as a parent, I even learned a few tips and tricks in how to better interact with my kids around school/homework.
The final session before the exam she provided specific, targeted test-taking strategies (i.e. our son always got the correct answer on a certain type of question – if he reviewed it twice). It was a very tailored experience. We’re still awaiting the results but definitely feel like we did “all that could be done” to prepare for the exam. We were very pleased with with Natasha and would specifically request her again in the future.

I would strongly recommend Varsity Tutors to anyone interested in seeking help with the GRE. Prior to taking the prep course I was extremely unprepared for the GRE. Now, after taking the course, I can honestly say that I am well prepared for the exam and feel confident in my ability to perform well. One of my favorite things about Varsity Tutors is that they truly care about each and every one of their students, and it shows from the second you decide to enroll. I received a call where I was asked about my preferred learning style and personality type so that my instructor would know more about me and how to best help me learn.
When it came time for the actual class, my instructor made it feel personal despite the fact that we were across the country from one another. He would always ask us questions about where we were from and what our future goals were. I loved the fact that we were able to form relationships even though none of us were in the same state.
My instructor's name was Stephen **. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of a tutor for the GRE. He is very kind, respectful, and fun. One of my favorite things about him is that he is simply good at teaching. He is very intelligent explains concepts very clearly and thoroughly. He always welcomes questions and finds new ways to explain certain things if students doesn't understand. If I were to take more classes, I would absolutely request to have Stephen ** again. Overall, my experience with Varsity Tutors was great. I got more out of my class than I ever thought I would and I feel prepared to do well on the GRE.

We were not sure whether online tutoring was the right thing to do, as a lot of teaching in school is done on video and this can be very counterproductive, depending on the subject. We signed up for tutoring, we had one session that made my daughter uncomfortable (nothing bad) because her grades we all A's we decided we would just cancel but learned that after 30 days (which is not enough time to use the 800 we spent in tutoring) there is no refund. So now we are out $800. I am sure it was in the fine print that I overlooked but I don't think that is a ethical way to do business. We received no goods or services and are just out. Computer programming/Javascript. As a Varsity Tutors client, I'd like to express my gratitude for the services I was able to receive during last 10 months. First of all, VT did a great job finding the right match for my needs based on a feedback I provided. I started having zero experience with writing code and my initial expectations were low, but my tutor, Kaighen, quickly opened my eyes on the world of possibilities that comes with programming. Working with Kaighen was fun. He explained the concepts well. He had a good understanding of when to step in to assist and when it was time to push me to find solutions on my own. He listened to my feedback and did great helping me implement my ideas when writing the code. No matter what challenge or obstacle I encountered he always found a solution/workaround to deliver the desired final result, making sure I understood it at the same time.
Additionally, Kaighen was very reliable and very responsive in his communication which meant scheduling sessions and coming up with plans of action was a breeze. The results I achieved by working with VT and Kaighen far surpassed my initial expectations. What was supposed to be a childish game project in my mind, grew into a professional grade, realistic Air Traffic Control Radar Simulation (my passion). It was a great journey transitioning from having no coding experience to now being able to write and to modify the code according to my future needs. I would highly recommend tutor Kaighen to anyone looking to accomplish a specific programming related goal or a life-long dream. Thank you Kaighen and Varsity Tutors for helping me realize one of mine.

Here is an update to my original review of Varsity Tutors. I have to hand it to them for handling my initial review with the utmost professionalism. Upon reading my review, the customer service representative reached out to me and spoke openly and honestly regarding the company and how they were focused on ensuring a good experience with their clients. So much so, that this representative researched my concerns and found evidence supporting my case. However, even before that, this individual was willing to issue a refund of unused hours to resolve this dispute.
To me, the way this person handled herself/himself with respect to this situation is an example of how customer service is to be modeled. Because of this, I am giving them a 4-star review and applaud this individual for representing Varsity Tutors with such integrity and professionalism.

Beware of Upselling from Varsity Tutors. When searching for a tutoring service, VT came highly recommended online, so I decided to give them a shot. Although my tutor was well versed in my subject and delivered great tutoring and flexibility, the cost ended up being double what it should have cost due to the original salesperson selling me more hours than I needed and then would not refund the additional hours. The amount of the difference was about $650.
The salesperson I spoke with in my initial experience this past year (Oct 2019) verbally told me any unused tutoring hours were refundable. The fine print in "black and white" (as they pointed out later from customer service/sales) stated additional hours were only refundable if requested within 30 days of the contract date. As this was the first time, I had ventured to use a tutoring service, I accepted the advice of my sales representative and purchased a larger block of hours than I actually needed, as I was unsure how many hours I would need to finish my 16-week course. I only ended up using about half the hours purchased.
After multiple emails with no response, I finally discussed over the phone with another sales representative that simply stated, “the contract plainly states in black and white the 30-day refund limit”. The only thing VT was willing to concede, is that the tutoring hours would not expire, allowing me to use them anytime in the future (usually they have a 12 month expiration date... Beware of this as well, as I am sure that is in ‘black and white’ also and not something they tell you upfront unless you read the contract). After many times stating I would likely never use a tutor again in my studies, he then suggested I gift the hours to someone I knew or something of that sort, which would still leave me out $650. Lesson Learned I suppose.
Final thoughts, I would look elsewhere before doing business with a company that upsells you in your initial phone consultation when the option to purchase more hours down the road at no additional charge is available. A company like this reminds me of a used car dealer trying to make a fast buck, as they know customers are likely not going to finish the service within the 30-day refund window and/or know the desired outcome of the tutoring service in that short amount of time. With any service, only buy what you know you will need and IF you decide to use Varsity Tutors, know upfront what you're getting into, as in my experience they do not verbally tell you everything upfront.
Hi G, Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience with Varsity Tutors’ platform, and we are glad we had the opportunity to talk with you further about your experience. We are happy that we were able to reach a mutually acceptable, amicable resolution, and we look forward to the opportunity to work with you in the future.

I was trying to get Samoan lessons. I was emailing Richard ** with the Madison, WI section. He assured me in August that he had Samoan tutors. I wasn't ready to buy then, but in November I reached out again. After getting their Black Friday sale info, I explicitly asked Richard if they still had Samoan tutors. He said yes and that they could even match me based on my schedule, personality, etc. After my husband purchased a set of lessons from Richard, I was matched with a tutor who didn't know Samoan. He and I both contacted Varsity Tutors to tell them their mistake. The tutor wasn't sure why they paired us together. After they took him off as my tutor, they said they searched again - and again matched me with the same tutor who didn't know Samoan.
After that failure, I called them again and was told they would search again. After over a week of this, I was told they didn't have any Samoan tutors, that they sent out a mass request of their tutors to see if anyone had any knowledge of Samoan and no one did. I was lied to from the start, that they had tutors in Samoan available and during the tutor search phase when I was assured they had tutors they were reaching out to.
My husband was told before the purchase he could give the lessons as a gift, then in the purchasing process told that they needed to associate an email of the student with the account. So I got the lessons emailed to me far before Christmas and he was unable to make it a gift at all. He was asked a few questions about my schedule and learning style, but my husband told Richard to talk with me before assigning a tutor to make sure he got things right. Richard said he would contact me. Then I got an email saying I had lessons and less than a day later I was matched with the tutor who didn't know Samoan. Richard has not contacted me since my husband talked to him. I was fully refunded the money but wasted my time researching tutors, asking questions, and calling Varsity Tutors to sort things out. They have great reviews, but I'm seeing more reviews now of others being told whatever needed to make the sale.
Farah, Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience with Varsity Tutors’ platform, and we are glad we had the opportunity to talk with you further about your experience. Our sincere apologies that we were unable to assist you in your search for a tutor to help with the Samoan language. Because of your experience, we have provided a refund to you. He was also helpful with the verbal sections and questions, always talking me through my answers, having me explain why I picked an answer, and challenging me. I highly recommend Varsity Tutors and Daniel specifically if anyone needs help improving their GRE score or with any other standardized test.

We are very pleased with Varsity Tutors. It has only been a couple of months but so far, so good. My daughter really likes her tutor, Shelby **. She is very patient and makes my daughter feel comfortable. We were a bit unsure about using a tutor via a webcam, but it has turned out to be a good thing—very convenient. My daughter is slowly regaining some confidence in her schoolwork. When she does homework with her tutor, she behaves and tries more. When she does homework with us, she gets easily frustrated. We continue to work with our daughter, as the sessions are only twice per week. I believe it really helps to have various adults explain tricky math concepts. Bottom line—we highly recommend Varsity Tutors.

When I first saw what Varsity Tutor had to offer I was ecstatic that I was going to get one on one time with someone knowledgeable in A&P. I was completely LOST in the subject. I had four sessions with my amazing tutor. She was driven to help me learn and understand the subject. I passed the course because of her help and I'll forever be grateful. Once I started applications for graduate school I realized I needed a "new pair of eyes" to look over my application essays.
I had left over hours from Varsity Tutors and decided to use them towards getting help with my application essays for graduate school. The tutor I met with was yet again amazing. Her and I have worked together 5 separate times, and counting. I send her my paper the night before and during our session we go over her edits and agree on a final say. He and I would discuss where he thinks it is going wrong but didn't know how to correct it. Half way thru the 2nd time taking the class, with only one exam left, I went ahead and signed him up for Varsity Tutors.
Jake was so blessed to have Charles as his tutor and together they pinpointed Jake's issues. The convenience of face to face over the computer with realtime white board interaction was the perfect way for my son to learn. I hired Varsity Tutors to assist my granddaughter in her SAT preparation. There were problems with the first tutor (communication). I mention this because as soon as it happened, I reached out to Varsity Tutors and they resolved the issue within 24 hours. A second tutor was assigned and reached out to me immediately to touch base on what my expectations and goals for my granddaughter were. He then called her to find out where she felt she needed the most help and to discuss any scheduling issues. The tutor built a program to meet her needs based on this information...He began with strengthening math concepts and understanding, following it with slide presentations and self problem solving to assess where she needed the most assistance.
The sessions are two hour intervals, which is not overwhelming for most teens. As her SAT date approaches he has changed his program into more problem solving than concept, overall SAT performance and is giving necessary test-based information to keep everything balanced and on track. This is the first time I have reached out for tutoring and I am very satisfied with her progress up to this point. She is gaining a skill set that was weak, and understanding conceptual ideas and problem solving which was not her strength. Although expensive, I believe the investment in her future is well worth the expense and I highly recommend this program.

We, then, moved to in home sessions and that worked much better for my son. We loved Catherine and my son's score went up 4 points. Catherine offered great pointers and suggestions on how to answer the questions and look at the questions differently to get the answer. My son responded well to her teaching style and did much better with the face to face contact. I also loved that he was given homework and that was reviewed at the next session.
I have another son who worked with Jessica a couple of years ago. We started with the face to face sessions right off the bat -- we knew face to face would be they way for him to succeed. When I called Varsity Tutors on a Sunday, I just wanted to leave a message, but I got a person who talked to me. They sounded very professional, informed and interesting, which created a good impression. Then, they provided good information. I liked the fact that they come to the house, which makes one less thing for me to drive my son to. I also like that they match their tutors, not just to the academic needs of the child, but also to the type of the child. That really impressed me. We're very happy with our interactions with Varsity's tutors. We've had experience with two people and both of them had been excellent, highly qualified and have great skills in relating to children and getting them engaged.
We had a tutor who is a very experienced 10th-grade teacher. My child was not really interested because he didn’t think he needed the tutoring, but she found a great way to connect with him and get his attention. It worked really well and he was looking forward to the lessons and we saw the benefits right away. Unfortunately, she broke her foot, so for the second package we got, Varsity Tutors paired us with another tutor. It was awesome and an excellent fit. He's younger and a new teacher, but my son absolutely loves him and would do anything he asked. It was a really positive experience.
We started during the school year the first time, then we decided to use the second six sessions during the summer because our school years get a little crazy. He's gonna start an advanced class in language arts and that’s not his strength because he's a math kid. He's a straight A student, but I've noticed some deficits that showed on the test and in attitude. We didn’t have very good teachers in that subject, so Varsity Tutors helped to catch him up. Both tutors, on my request, walked with him on comprehension and they were very complimentary. He is now more confident in his ability to express himself in writing and verbally. We're taking a little break because of the summer but we still have a few sessions to finish, and we're looking forward to it. Varsity Tutors is good and I've recommended them to a bunch of people.

I tried to work with Varsity Tutors to get a tutor in advanced math. They assured me that they'd have good people. I then purchased a block of hours to use. In my first tutoring session, it turned out after maybe ten minutes that the tutor knew less about the subject than I did, and so we gave up on the session. I have no idea why he thought he'd be able to tutor me in a subject that he knew nothing about. My other tutor seemed more promising, but never followed up with me to schedule a time for a lesson.
After this experience, I tried to get a refund for my unused hours, and they refused, keeping my $600. It's possible that if I waste more time on the phone with them they'll eventually give me the refund I want. Also they insist on doing everything over the phone, which is quite inconvenient, at least for me. Terrible experience; I strongly recommend against using them, at least for subjects outside their core competencies.

He is able to explain any questions that she has or if she doesn’t understand something so that she does understand. She has even raised her Algebra 2 grade a lot since she started the tutoring before the end of school. So, that helped a lot. I couldn’t find anybody in the high school to help her with math and Matt was a godsend, so I was so happy that I signed her up early. She hasn’t taken a practice test yet, but the one-on-one is going to help her because she can ask him to explain in a different way if she doesn’t understand. I’m trying to get her to take a practice test tomorrow, because we have four tutor sessions left. I highly recommend Varsity Tutors. It’s totally worth the money.

My son was tutored weekly through Varsity Tutors specifically in math. He is a very good math student but for some reason had not scored as high as he would have liked on the math section of the SAT. He sat at our dining room table weekly for 5 weeks with Marissa ** who tutored remotely each session for 2 hours. His follow up score for the SAT in math went up 100 points!! So did his confidence. His score now places him in a different competitive bracket for the colleges that he'll be applying to. We were both very pleased with these results and will highly recommend Marissa and Varsity Tutors!

Varsity Tutors was much better than the tutoring company I used before. My daughters were both really happy with the tutoring relationship in general and felt like the tutor cared about them and their progress. The tutor was encouraging. Being able to simplify things and sort of go step by step on a one-on-one basis was helpful. I definitely saw a confidence increase in both of my daughters. We still need to do some more work, but that’s on them and not on the tutors.

My learning experience through Varsity Tutors was very beneficial. I needed the extra help. I needed the one-on-one attention. Varsity Tutors was one of the first ones I found online, and I saw the reviews and heard good things about them. I liked the person that I worked with to get me started, Ashley. She became my account manager. But all the people before Ashley were very nice and gave me good information.
I had two tutors for one subject and one helped me more than the other. The first tutor, I got very anxious with and felt annoyed towards the end of our sessions. So, I stopped using him towards the middle, and then started using a different tutor. I was using two tutors all along. And my second tutor was amazing. I would use him again in a heartbeat if I had to, which I didn't have to take the exam again. But I would use him again. I was most impressed with the way he presented himself and he was straightforward with me. He was very willing to help me in any material or any subject that I needed help with.

We've been using Varsity Tutors on and off for about a year. My son had two tutors, both of which because no local tutor was available. They were both prompt in email communication with me in setting up and introducing what we wanted. After that, they primarily communicated directly with my son. They helped mostly in decreasing his frustration. He’s an advanced learner so with Varsity Tutors, it is going above what he would normally learn in school. The combination of knowing that it’s okay to get help and just having somebody to talk through things is an important thing. He needs to talk to learn. I recommended Varsity Tutors to several people - just having that one point person when you have questions that you don’t need to feel self-conscious about.

My tutor was very responsive and professional. I feel much more prepared for my MCAT than I did prior to Varsity Tutoring.

I went online and I found different places, but then I found Varsity Tutors and I called them to see what they have to offer me. When I called, I spoke to Jen. She was the one that gave all the information. I shared with her about my son and his disability. He had an autoimmune disease, and it attacked his brain. He was paralyzed for a year. And then he was having seizures for two years and memory problems. He's still recovering from the NMDA. But when I talked to Jen and shared my needs, she thought she was able to send me somebody. I went ahead and see if he works.
We signed up for the first 50 hours. We used two tutors which was math and language arts. The first tutor for math didn't work out for us because she was always either calling out because she didn't have vehicle or her job or something happened, or she was late. So, I called Jen again. I told her the tutor wasn't working for me, and she changed it right away for me. She sent another tutor for math, which turned out very good. My son was almost able to have a friendship with the tutor and able to ask her questions because he is really, really shy. And if he don't know you, then he's not gonna ask you because he thinks he is not supposed to ask a lot of questions. So, he got really comfortable with her. But when we talked to her, she's not gonna be able to tutor this year because she applied for college and she was gonna move out of state. So, we said goodbye to her at the end of the year.
We finished the tutor with 100 hours for the whole year and it really helped a lot. My son is still behind in language arts because it's a lot of comprehension and reading. But with the tutor, he was able to pass it, which was really good. The tutor would come and help him. And he was able to talk to her and deal with her very good. It worked out for us. I really liked the program, and the tutors were always on time.
We are trying to get a tutor for next year, but I have been sick for the past six months. Right now, I'm in natural clinic here where you have to get and pay everything out of pocket. It's getting a little bit expensive for me. So, I spoke to Jen, and I asked her to give me a call by the beginning or middle of July to see if they have something. She always calls me when Varsity Tutors has a special rate for the hours.

I will only say that this has been total waste of our time and money with catastrophic consequences for our son. Until junior year of high school he always had A’s and B’s in his math class and was in honors math. Junior year of precalculus brought some difficulty so we decided to hire some help for him from 2nd semester and ended up with Varsity Tutors, because they had solid reviews. We spent almost $2000 on his tutoring with Varsity Tutors and he had 16 90 minutes lessons. Final product- F on his Final exam- in other words FAILED! After 16 sessions with their experienced tutor, my son FAILED! I will NEVER again spend another dime on this joke of a tutoring!

I found Varsity Tutors online when I was researching different companies. I like that I have my own personal tutor. I'm studying for the MCAT. I have a really good tutor, Laura, and I’m still really close with her. I still tutor with her so it’s been nice. She would always text me and help me schedule. She has been really lenient. When I don’t have time, she’s cool. The only thing I would like to change is we had a ton of connection problems. The camera wouldn’t work well, I would kind of hear her then break up, our screen wouldn’t work well or the passages wouldn’t download. But other than that, everything was amazing. The key to success is having a tutor that you actually enjoy and one you can learn with. I’m not afraid to ask questions when I see something wrong. I want to see my tutor and talk with her. It makes it easier and it’s not a hassle for me. Varsity Tutors has helped me a ton so far. It’s money well spent.

We had a really good experience with Varsity Tutors. It was everything we had hoped for probably and more. My daughter did some tutoring in August, kinda slacked off a little bit in September, October ‘cause she has a sports season, picked it up a little bit in November, and then took the ACT and SAT one week apart in early December. And she did very well. She took the PSAT in October and became a merit scholar. We did better than ever expected.
Varsity Tutors gave her some confidence which was great. With Varsity Tutors, there are people out there that can answer questions and help you do better. She has encouraged 4 friends that then signed up for Varsity Tutors and had done well with it. And people are very pleased by it. Their younger siblings are using it. There are always some technical hiccups no matter what, but for the most part, Varsity Tutors' platform worked pretty well. It’s also nice that you can buy a varied number of hours. You don’t have to buy a certain amount. I like that it’s flexible and transferable to other things.

My son is a very visual learner and he might need multiple ways to learn something especially in math which is his weakness. He is excellent.
Overall, my son's learning experience at Varsity Tutors has been very easygoing. He was being tutored for the ACT and it has helped him in his schoolwork. He has used information and skills from there to help him improve his grades in school as well. When my son started his ACT adventure, he started out a 23 composite ACT. When he took a class, he went to a 26. After working with Varsity, he went to a 30. That's a pretty big jump and I'm really impressed. I'd definitely recommend Varsity Tutors. Spent over $1000 total for son prior to ACT test. The tutor, Negeen, told me I needed 2x as many sessions as I had agreed to with the sales rep for him to be successful, so I bought more. The first session we were offered was in the middle of the night from 11 PM to 1 AM, which is not appropriate for a student on a school night. Another time, although my son and I had both been sent emails confirming a 5 to 7 PM time, Negeen did not show up, then called at 6 PM demanding to start a session and go until 8 PM, which would have interfered with another commitment.
Another time, my son texted a half an hour in advance to let her know that he needed to cancel a session, and they worked out a time to reschedule, but she never sent a confirmation for that time. The last straw was when they had actually begun a tutoring session, and 30 minutes into his technology quit working. He emailed her and then they spoke on the phone. He asked if he could run upstairs and log on to a different computer in our household to complete the session. With an hour and a half left of the allotted time, she refused to continue and offered him a session on a Saturday night instead.
When I texted and asked her why she refused to continue the session, she told me my message was inappropriate and wished us well. Although she seemed knowledgeable about the subject, I feel that she did not seem to appreciate the fact that we were paying her for a service and seemed to think her time was more valuable than ours. I called and was offered a new tutor, but with only 3 weeks until the ACT, I fear that starting over will be difficult. I have four children, and we have used tutors before from different companies with much easier, less expensive and more positive experiences.

I’m from a military family and I had some gaps in my education ‘cause we changed schools so often. My tutor from Varsity Tutors helped me. We brushed up on stuff, and I learned some stuff that I did have gaps in. We had a little trouble using their internal platform though. But we worked it out how to get it done. I’m much more self-confident with my math now. And they’ve helped me quite a bit. I couldn’t be happier. I sure had a good experience.

Both tutors for English and for Chemistry from Varsity Tutors helped my daughter tremendously, She plans in using them until she graduates from high school. My daughter does most of the interaction but I control it. They text me and everything is recorded, but if she needs tutoring at the last minute, they have great communication. They work with her with everything. On chemistry, I told my daughter that she’s on her own because I have no clue what that’s about. She said we needed Gil because she had a test to get into. Gil has made this so awesome. Now, my daughter is getting ready for her finals. She will get her study sheet today where they prepare them.
She goes to an all-girls Catholic school and it’s a very hard school. She’s so calm about it and I’m so glad. I told her that I was so glad she has Gil. It’s amazing. It’s the same with her English tutor. She has a session today and I asked her how it has been working and she said the tutor has been helping. I was glad to hear that because I know she was struggling. She was a B-plus. She is in her Honors English class and now, it’s at 95%. It wouldn’t be possible without their help. So, I’m very grateful. I am very proud but I’m not gonna sit here and take credit. The credit is in the tutors because without the tutors’ help, I don’t know what we would do.
We are very happy with Varsity Tutors and I told a friend that she needs to get into it. These tutors know what they are doing and everything is fresh in their minds. If you look at their profile, you will see what they specialize in and everything is documented. You will get all the notes of the whole session so, there’s nothing to worry about. I recommended them to several friends. One of my friends already took advantage of it. If they don’t, then that’s on them.
My daughter is a straight A student and without the help of the tutors, especially Gil, she wouldn’t be one. She has a solid A on her chemistry and she’s confident now. She’s gonna be taking AP Bio next year and Gil is a tutor for that. So, we’re good. Varsity Tutor hires amazing people and they are doing a great job. The experience with them has been life-changing for my child. She doesn’t have that additional stress on her that she used to have and as a parent, you don’t want your child to go through the pressure. As it is, their studies are very hard and Varsity Tutors has helped out.

I've used Varsity Tutors since my son was a snot nosed 4/5th grader and on. Most recently they helped him get through the final years of High School. Their tutors were very keen on the subjects he needed. But aside from just the school material, Varsity Tutors trained him in organization, effective note taking for easier study sessions and as a result of those factors, his confidence soared. Varsity Tutors isn't only gonna tutor your child. They cover a full student approach of educating, supporting, polishing and preparing for what's next. I love these guys and gals.

With Varsity Tutors, there is an availability of tutors in our area. We've had two tutors. The first one responded when necessary regarding appointments or scheduling changes. And then during the actual sessions, she was like any other instructor. We've been much happier with the second tutor that we've had. He is extremely responsive. Not only does he interact in terms of scheduling and minor changes to curriculum, but he also provides me with feedback regularly on how my son is progressing, which I think is vital. He's amazing. My son's grade was a 25%, and he's up to an 85% now.
Varsity Tutors is a little on the pricey side. My son's tuition is very expensive already. He's in the college prep school. Initially, I was feeling like we weren't seeing the results that we had expected. However, we have seen such a drastic improvement with the second tutor. And because of the level of interaction that we have and his flexibility, if my son has a test coming up, he does not think twice to rearrange his schedule so that he can fit my son in earlier to make sure that they have a session right before the test. And they cover what's going to happen on the test. He doesn't think twice to deviate from the curriculum a little to make sure that he's adjusting to my son's little co-curriculum. So, that's one thing that has been huge. And in that case, the price is probably worth it.
Varsity Tutors actually recommended that we switch tutors because I was ready to pull back and try some other different options. The person that is like my account manager took about 30 minutes to talk to me about my son, individually as a young man, his interests, what he likes to do, and what he reads. They weren't academic questions. Some of them were, but for the most part they were more just about who my son was as a person. And he personally paired him off with this other tutor. And that's phenomenal. Also, they gave us some hours back because we weren't super happy. And so, I can't say enough. They have done everything to make this an amazing experience.
The company has been responsive overall. My account manager has been amazing. He doesn't think twice to call me just to ask how's everything going when my son had a mid-term, which was sort of gonna be a clincher on where this grade was gonna go. He emailed me the day before, and asked me to wish him good luck because he knew that that next day my son's mid-term was coming. They're so interested in seeing his success. My son is excited about learning Latin again. Earlier in the semester, he was just disappointed and sort of really dreading going to class everyday and dreading the tutoring session. And he's excited about it again.

I had a wonderful 2-month tutoring experience with Marcela. We were nicely matched because of her interest in art and my being an artist in my retirement years. I had a minimal level of Spanish at the beginning with a lot of hesitation to even try speaking Spanish. Marcela offered me so many resources and suggestions that helped me with grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking. She truly is gifted at this work. I found myself spending hours preparing for our sessions, quite happily, I should add. We accomplished about 85% of our time together before I went to Peru and Colombia on a trip. I felt so much braver speaking Spanish thanks to our tutoring time. She focused on specific questions and interests related to my trip, as well as other topics I brought up. It was intense, often exhausting (especially at the beginning), and very worthwhile.

I’m in a PhD program and I had some private tutors from school who I was not so happy with. They weren’t knowledgeable enough so I googled and I found Varsity Tutors. They were the first one I contacted and I have been using them since July or August of last year. I have one tutor so far. Her name is Deborah and I have nothing but great things to say about her. She’s knowledgeable and she has a PhD herself. She takes time to explain to me some of the basic things that I’ve been missing. When it’s not tutoring sessions and I send an email, I get a response immediately which is very much different from my professors. Also, if she doesn’t know something because my field is very specialized, she admits it and we work things out together. She helped me to go through my written prelim which I passed in October and I would’ve not been able to do it without her.
Three weeks ago, I passed my oral prelim which makes me a PhD candidate now. There would have been no way I would’ve been able to do that again without her assistance. I am in the process of finishing my proposal now and I’m working with Deborah very closely on this. I will be using her help in any of the steps, before the prelims, for writing the proposal and even when it comes to my dissertation and defending it. I’m very happy with the program and I’ve signed up for a whole bunch of more hours. I also have some of my cohorts who are going through the same stresses that I am going through to get ready. So, I’ve already given my recommendations to friends and some of the other students that asked me.

Varsity Tutors found us a different tutor and we’ve loved that tutor, and we’ve had that same tutor. Varsity Tutors employ really good tutors and I like that they have different types of tutors because every kid isn’t gonna learn the same. And so, my child has had an excellent experience. Her tutor is friendly. When my daughter veers off and wants to talk about something off-topic, he is able to bring her back to what they are talking about or what they are studying. Varsity Tutors is very proactive to checking with parents to see if their experience is positive and if they wanna tweak or have any concerns or any changes they wanna make. It’s helpful so that if the parent has something and maybe reluctant to let the company know, they have a constant opportunity to tweak or fix anything that needs to be addressed.

We set up another online session while we waited for an in person tutor. The online learning platform is total junk. Video and audio were choppy. We were disconnected from the tutor several times. Tech support Was unable to stabilize the app which behaved differently as we tried several different computers. Our poor son spent two hours distracted by technical difficulties and learned nothing but patience. Strike three. Maybe they should try better developed conferencing systems and focus on the student instead of making a profit. Apps like Skype, Webex, Facebook, WhatsApp, FaceTime or Zoom seem to work well enough for billions of people. Or maybe find tutors that show up.

There was a program that he and my son were working on for computer science last semester and he continued to look at it after him being done with the session. So I just feel as though he’s really on top of things and his way of explaining things is great. My son was doing very well in computer science anyway, but really wanted somebody to just reinforce things. And this guy’s way of teaching is very good.
Varsity Tutors is very good in following up. We had sort of a low, that we didn’t need a tutor for a while. They’re not overly aggressive, but they’re attentive. We had actually purchased a huge block of hours and didn’t need them. They were ready to expire, and then my son wanted to hone in on a couple computer science programs. So, they had let me pay for, sort of, another smaller block, and then gave me access to that other block of hours that would’ve normally expired. They’re very accommodating. I know they’re running a business, but they try to keep everything in line.

I started with Varsity Tutors about a year ago when my older son was struggling in reading, writing and just being able to express what he wanted to write on paper. I tried a couple other tutoring services, but it wasn’t quite as focused as I needed it to be and it wasn’t as individualized. I gave Varsity Tutors a try. The tutor that we got really got to know my child, understood how to drum out and have him think about ideas. And his grade in that class went from a B- to a B+ within a couple months. I continued the tutoring for him over the summer, and I started having my younger son do it in the summer too. Not because they needed it, but just to maintain and keep them in practice. My older son has actually not been doing much tutoring over the last two months. He hasn’t needed it and he is getting an A in English. And I think it has a lot to do with the skills that she taught him a year ago.
What I’ve done is instead of my older son doing the regular tutoring, I’m having my younger one do more regular tutoring. He’s in 6th grade, and he needs some additional help on conjunctions and grammar. She’s working with him so that he has more time working on those things and what he would be able to do in class or homework. But I also have the flexibility of saying, “My younger one doesn’t need much this week, instead help out the older one using this time slot. I want you to review his essay and work with him on formulating ideas.” And it’s been working really well.
I like that it’s one-on-one and it really focuses on the needs of the child. They really tried to understand what the child needs. It’s really a private tutor but the fact that it’s online, and there’s also the option of instant tutoring, is fabulous. Because if it was a real person in my house, I’d have to be there or if it’s a real person, I might have to take my kids somewhere. The kids also love the whole online interaction because they do so much on laptop computers and phones that it really aligns with how they do things today.
The staff at Varsity reaches out to me from time to time asking how things are going or if I need anything else. They’re good at reminding me when I’m running low on hours because that’s something I don’t always have time to check. If I also notice that one of my boys or the other one needs slightly different help depending on what’s going in their English class or if they need help with certain things about reading or even if it’s reviewing a draft of something they’ve written and offering them some suggestions, I just need to send a quick email. And they totally understand, they incorporate it right away into the next session or if they can, they’ll accommodate with a special session. So to me, the flexibility in what they’re covering and how I schedule and when I schedule, that is tremendous. I just had a really great experience with Varsity Tutors. They’re very responsive, they’re working with me, they’re working with the kids as individuals, and that to me speaks volumes.

Varsity Tutors has pretty high reviews and it was simple and easy for me to use. They were all really good about helping me get the service that I needed, as well as helping me out on price. It was a pretty good experience overall. I felt like they were really trying to help me. They gave me this overall better view of how statistics all work together. I got the big picture which helped a lot with most of my stuff. They brought me up from a D to a B, so it was very successful. I was just extremely satisfied. And if I need a tutor again, I’m gonna use Varsity.

I wanted to get some help quickly. I read through the website and Varsity Tutors looked like a very reasonable service, so I gave it a try. Their staff was efficient at getting us signed up and they were on the aggressive side to get us hooked in. The first tutor had a very strong accent and his English was hard for my children to understand. He also stepped above their limits, made them feel inferior, and I don't think being a good tutor means making your student feel bad. And then he said that his camera wasn't working and that was weird because my children were supposed to see their tutor. So, it was pretty bad.
The next one we had was a former elementary school teacher named Brittany and she was terrific. She couldn't have been better and she was able to pinpoint what my children needed help with. She was also able specifically help them with certain problems in evaluating the way their questions were phrased. Overall, Varsity's cost was fairly expensive, but it suited our needs just fine.
Rose, thank you for speaking with us regarding your experience with Varsity Tutors. While we are disappointed the first tutor was not the right fit, we are so glad your children got support with their second tutor, Brittany. This is the reason we stand behind our Tutor Guarantee. Please don't hesitate to contact us if we can assist your family with additional support in the future.

Varsity Tutors was the first tutoring option we had for my child who's eight years old. I chose them because I could do several different subjects without having to pay a separate amount. The other place I was looking for would only do one subject for the amount of money. My daughter has ADHD and she’s a bit anxious as well. She was having problems with reading and catching up because she didn’t have the proper medication when she started in school, so she fell behind. We got the tutor for that and her reading has become great. She comes home with other school work too and the tutor, Elizabeth, helps her with that but also helps her stay on task. She’s wonderful and so much more patient than I am, even as a mother. She redirects her and gives her proper breaks. Everything’s perfect. My daughter definitely got the confidence that she didn’t have before. I am happy with Varsity.

I was traveling a lot and I liked the online platform Varsity Tutors had. It was for test prep and everybody there was very communicative. The tutor that we worked with was extremely positive and approached feedback from a positive way. I would recommend them.
