The tutor our kids had was top-drawer and our interactions have been completely professional and extremely helpful. She is so smart, reliable, and works great with both of my children. It's been a very positive experience because we were not sure if the kids were learning in the school so it was extremely stressful. I didn't know how to ask the questions that I needed to ask. I was daunted and it was a really dark moment. Varsity Tutors, however, was like, "We're going to figure this out." They've been great and they were always available with any sort of issue that we had but didn't demand feedback all the time. I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Varsity Tutors had people local to where I lived and sent me someone that I was really happy with. My daughter has had two different tutors. Originally, I hired a precalculus tutor. They were very understanding of the kind of tutor that I wanted and sent me exactly that type of person. He's incredibly conscientious, kind and super smart. He also has a very nice demeanor. Moreover, he calls if you wait 10 seconds. For a very short time, I also had a tutor for world history before the AP exams last year. My daughter was really worried about it, but she got a five out of five on the exam. I had a good experience with both tutors.

The math tutor we had last year came back this week and he'll come back again after this. My daughter was really sick, so he is helping me get her back up to speed on some stuff. In addition, I just recently signed up for SAT prep. That starts tonight with a new tutor. As much as she does not want to deal with schoolwork, once school is out, it really calms her down when she's preparing for a test. She struggled in the middle of the semester last spring, but she ended up with an A- and got a perfect score until her final exam. If they sent a tutor that is not right for you, then you don't need to hesitate to call and ask for someone different. They would try to accommodate you. Working with them has been productive.

The company recommended I transfer the tutor hours to someone else. This is not fair. Just want a refund. As a military member I feel misled.

Veronica, we attempted to reach you several times in recent months but were unable to connect with you personally. We understand how frustrating it can be for students when a tutor doesn't meet expectations. Our tutor guarantee ensures that your initial session was credited back to your account and a new tutor was found that we hoped would meet your needs. My son's tutor helped him with his executive function skills and ability to multitask. They did weekly sessions for 90 minutes a week for a total of eight sessions. It didn't focus so much on homework itself, but on studying and how to prepare for school. My son had a good interaction with his tutor and he was very reactive to the tutoring. Varsity Tutors provides a tailored tutoring experience based on the needs of the individual. Overall, it was a very good experience and I'd recommend them.

Varsity Tutors really cares about their brand. After I complained about my tutor on this website, they reviewed my session and promised to give some amount back to me since the tutor finished the session halfway earlier than the arranged time. I want to thank to the management team for helping me on this issue. It is very nice of them, but I think the problem should be solved by choosing the qualified tutors. Maybe it is something hard in this sector, too.

Tutors are really seem like fraud guys, I think the workers should be much more careful whom they are allowing to teach on this website. The guy I took a course said me that he will send the answers directly for my HW after the session. His name is "Reda **", but he did not. I spent about $150 just futile, so sad. :((( Hate fraud people and things, but they are happy with that. :(

I was in a crisis mode as my son was finishing his senior year and didn't have a lot of time. And Varsity Tutors was responsive. The tutor mainly helped in developing the outline for my son's final English papers, and he also helped proofread them. Each time my son would have a little bit of homework to do from a session, the tutor would help him with the proofing after he wrote them. It wasn't necessarily mastering, but it was helping him develop better writing. Everything was done online. I scheduled the classes for him and he logged in and held the sessions. My son was happy with his experience overall.

My boys really like having the online tutorials available anytime and they’re enjoying it. Varsity Tutors' pricing is in line with other tutorials. It’s all fairly expensive but it serves the convenience of having it 24 hours in your house. You’re allowed to take them anywhere. Jake, my son, is getting ready to start tomorrow. My other son has been doing it with different tutors and he’s enjoying it. Varsity Tutors is definitely helping them. We had AP Computer Science and Chemistry and it’s tough to find a good tutor for the upper-end subjects. They’ve been very helpful and they contact me when my hours are running low. When I only have 5 hours left of tutoring time, if they have a promotion going on, they let me know if I want to sign up for more hours and I can do so now at a discounted rate. I have recommended Varsity Tutors.

Varsity Tutors is a good company to use if you need help. They can come to the house, which is really helpful, or work on the computer or they can meet you somewhere if you have a laptop. They also send people out with master’s level. The lady who came to my house was working on her master’s degree so I felt she was very well-educated. She walked me through some things and reminded me about correct grammar that I have forgotten because I'm an older person. I kind of slide in the slang like hasn't, wasn't, and isn't, which are not correct grammar for academic papers. Varsity Tutors is definitely worth the money and they got me over a hump. My tutor gave me the confidence to do something on my own. I used Varsity Tutors until I felt like I didn't need them anymore, but I'm definitely going to call them back.

He was very knowledgeable in English and in Math and everything that we needed. He’s an older gentleman, very pleasant and a very good tutor. We've been doing about two months tutoring already and my son’s ready for the test. My children have developed a good relationship with their tutors from Varsity Tutors and things seem to be going well. They were very receptive to me providing ideas of what I'd like them to cover and work with, like helping with some school review work versus working on stuff that the kids need to catch up on. We were moving country then and we needed to fill the gap caused by the move so we looked at Varsity Tutors. My daughter still needs that additional support because she missed a good portion of her third grade here. Meanwhile, my son has made a significant progress and he's almost closed that gap. It's definitely worth it. The learning platform has worked for our kids and for our lifestyle. We also enjoy the flexibility they offer. It helps that we can go away for the weekend and don't necessarily have to cancel the sessions if we have a connection.

When I was researching tutors, Varsity Tutors didn’t have any in my area, but as soon as I walked off the site they called within five minutes and found a tutor online for me. It was convenient that they just called and were professional. We started on time every day, sometimes it was a few minutes late because I know that they had other appointments before me. I answered all the questions I had and went through all the lectures. The regional person for my area always contacted me when I first signed up and then throughout the entire tutoring process just to make sure that everything was going well and my tutor was a good fit. I had Chemistry and we went over all of my PowerPoints. He also brought in stuff from other classes that he’s been seeing, like practice worksheets and problems, and he gave me a test to work on.

However, my teacher wasn’t very good at explaining concepts and going through reactions. He helped me step by step and then just made sure that I have the main idea of what was actually going on, and why we were doing what we were doing, so that really helped in that area. Also, for college students, sometimes they’re on a budget and the service is kind of expensive, but it is a one-on-one tutoring whenever you’re available.

It's been a great experience with Varsity Tutors. The professionalism, the knowledge of the tutors that I've dealt with, the overall experience in terms of usability, accessibility, and the whole online platform have been fantastic. I've already recommended them to a couple of my friends -- one is preparing for law school and another is getting a masters and doing the same thing as me so it's been a fantastic experience. After the first time my tutor and I met, we exchanged phone numbers. That way, we can just text back and forth of, "Hey, let's push back the class," or if I had a quick question and needed to do a phone call or an email. So, my tutor was fantastic.

Varsity Tutors pairs you with tutors that are excelling in the areas you need help in and tutors that also have like interests that they learn in the same manner that you do. So, that's definitely a big plus. If I ever need to go back to school for something, I'd totally use them as a tool for me to be able to use and study and regain some knowledge.

I did some research and Varsity Tutors had really good reviews. Their tutors were really knowledgeable and they take the time to pair the right tutor with the student. That's something that I didn't see with their competitors. Varsity Tutors wanted to talk to you. They ask what your goals were and what your learning struggles were.

I was studying for the GRE and I needed help. My tutor was great. He was very kind and I really enjoyed working with him. He is very patient, explained things to me easily and broke things down for me so that I could understand it. If I wasn't getting it, he would be able to explain it to me in a different way so that I could understand it. Plus, he wouldn't let me give up on myself. Sometimes I would say that I just don't get something. He'd tell me encouragingly that I'm almost there and just have to get through one more step.

I was studying for the GRE on my own prior to contacting Varsity Tutors. I was having such a hard time with the Math portion and my practice test scores were super low. After working with them, my test scores came up significantly. I would not have been that successful on that test if I had not gotten a tutor for it. Plus, I feel like I wouldn't have gotten into grad school if I didn't do as well as I did. I definitely attribute a lot of my success to my tutor.

I'd recommend giving them a call if you are struggling and need help or if you're looking to improve on something. They'll work with you. They have great payment plans and options. You don't have to get a whole ton of hours if you don't need them. Plus, you can add on hours if you underestimated the amount you needed. It's a really great investment for your future.

I went to Penn State where there are places that I can go to that gives reviews for the course that I’m in, and it was okay. And then, I met with a private tutor that was just around the local area. Both options didn’t give me much help so I tried Varsity Tutors. I was worried about the whole online thing because I thought it wouldn’t be any good, but it was easy. I was doing Physics and I could draw all the equations on the board and have somebody talk about the problems. I could also upload my sample exams so we could see the same problems. The tutor was good at describing the problems. He described it in six different ways so eventually I got it. He was also easy to deal with since I had his cell phone number.

Varsity Tutors worked out really well for me. I always tell the people here, when I’m recommending Varsity, not to get turned off by the online thing. I’d tell them to jump on it and it’s like the tutor’s in the room with you which is not bad. I took Physics and Math and I personally vouch for that, and any of the other subjects would be just as good.

I have two kids that use Varsity Tutors. Last year, we had Lucas for my oldest son. He connected very well with him and my son really started improving towards the end. We had to cancel though because of finances. It’s an expensive service but my son absolutely loved it. He was a kid that’s been failing in Math since second grade and just when I had to cancel, he started to turn it around.

Somebody offered us a scholarship this year so he has a new tutor, Sarah, since Lucas couldn’t do it anymore. Though he liked her too, it was different with her because of his male bond with Lucas. But my son definitely still likes going, and there are times he wants to talk to Sarah about problems. Now that he's in high school, things are harder. Knowing that he needs more help, I have decided to focus the scholarship on him.

My daughter had missed a lot of school because she has been in the hospital. She became diabetic and was just completely lost. Varsity Tutors also found a tutor for her, Shiloh, and she was a special education teacher. She was able to work with her and brought her back to where she needed to be. Now she's doing fine and this year, she hasn't had any problems.

In all these, I appreciate Varsity Tutors. Their staff is very good and very easy to work with. The best thing about them is when I had to cancel, they didn’t give me any problems with it. I always tell people that. Overall, Varsity Tutors is a great investment depending on what your needs are. I would definitely encourage friends to do it. We were just so blessed to get the scholarship. If I ever had extra money, I would put somebody else on scholarship because my kids have grown so much, not just academically but personally, because each tutor from Varsity has been able to reach them in a different way.

My son goes to boarding school in St. Louis so I needed someone who could tutor him there and also when he was home in California. I liked the flexibility that Varsity Tutors had to offer. We were doing ACT prep and my son worked with them from August to May of last year and the experience was great. I enjoyed that there was a tutor right there near his school in St. Louis who was able to come out and really meet with him. My son had a very limited schedule and so the tutor was able to meet with him during his time, which was great. And then when my son came back home, there was someone who met him here as well, so it worked out great.

My son thought both tutors were very good, too. The tutor he had in St. Louis was stronger with Reading and Science and then the one out here more so with Math, and it was a great balance. We’re really thrilled with Varsity Tutors. I looked online and the research that I was able to do led me to their company. I found that with them, we could use the hours in any way my son needs and there’s a lot of flexibility so there wasn’t a lot of risk going into trying their service. The other testimonials also convinced me to sign up with them.

We had two kinds of basic needs, one was for English where my son really needed to learn and be able to create new skill sets. He had some challenges with essay writing so I went into detail about being able to explain what we were looking for and they matched us with the perfect tutor for my son. He worked last year with Ken, his tutor, and this year, my son is getting the best English grades he’s ever gotten. So that worked well. We also needed Varsity Tutors to get the best out of my son in Calculus, a subject he loves. We wanted to improve his knowledge of calculus for college prep and he's had two great tutors that have been doing a great job over the last year and this year in that regard.

My son is a really smart kid, kind of STEM-focused so it’s all about motivation and even though these were two very different subjects and two very different tutors, both were able to meet him and get him motivated. Ken had a much tougher job because English was my son’s least favorite subject. But he did a fabulous job so when my son started to need some more help in AP calculus this semester, he asked me to call Varsity Tutors again. It was good all the way around and we haven’t had a bad experience at all in any regard so we kept us using them.

We also used another tutoring program but there’s teaching someone when you’re beside them and there’s teaching the student to not need you and be able to go on. That’s the difference in our experience with Varsity Tutors and they would be a value to others as well. And from a results perspective, my son got a 34 on his ACT which we are really pleased with. That is a good score in large part because of the investment we made with Varsity Tutors. He also got accepted to his number one college choice.

My GRE tutor was very helpful. She was a very sweet person and easy to get along with. My interactions with her were incredibly positive and my learning experience was great. I only had about six days to study and I had to pump up my score by about 15 points, and I did it. It's expensive so if someone could afford it, I'd definitely recommend Varsity Tutors. It definitely helped in my situation because I'm 37 and with two kids so I didn't have time to really relearn geometry.

I'm a doctoral student at the University of Phoenix and I needed someone that could come to my home to tutor me for Statistics. I did a search and when I called Varsity Tutors, they had the options that suited me. Even when I had another one just to get me started on the part of my dissertation, the tutors that I had knew how to meet me where and what part I was and they never ever made me feel like I should’ve done this or I didn’t know that. They were very encouraging and very patient. I was also looking for a research assistant or someone that could do the research part with the articles for me. That service wasn’t offered but they had a young man who graduated from Stanford in English and had his doctorate so he was able to work with me for a short period of time helping to organize my thoughts better for my dissertation. He read it over because I was working on my proposal.

Varsity Tutors provided excellent service from the receptionist to the tutors. I had a great and wonderful experience with them. I even got an A on my Statistics class. But I suggest they expand or offer as an add-on in the future, a doctoral area for students who are looking for guidance. The area would have someone who is knowledgeable of APA style and you could give them the topic and they would be able to supply you with the articles that's related to your topic, because that helps a great deal with the literature review section of the dissertation. Other than that, I would tell a friend that Varsity Tutors is one of the best options that I’ve found because they offer what you need. Also, technology wise, they're very up-to-date and the tools that I used were user friendly.

My daughter is in college and was taking summer courses. The availability of tutoring in the campus that summer was limited so I went online and tried to find a tutor for her who will be available for the two classes she was taking. Varsity Tutors was then readily available. My daughter did everything online and did live tutoring sessions with the tutor. But more than anything, she independently did her homework and sent it to him for correction and then they get together. The tutor was there to explain what she did wrong. However, there were some issues with Skype whenever they do video tutoring so they ended up sending stuff back and forth. But my daughter prefers live tutoring if she had to meet on a regular basis. Nevertheless, she ended up getting an A and B, which was good.

After a couple of days of posting this review, someone from Varsity Tutors' office called to resolve the issue. The person who called me was definitely listening to what I had to say, and I felt like she was actually trying to help me resolve this issue. She was able to talk with her team and make a full refund for the hours that I did not use, which was exactly what I was asking for. I appreciate the staff that helped me to get this resolved, which was done in a timely fashion!

    Original Review: Nov. 21, 2017

I am a college student who needed help with only one single subject: Set theory, which is advanced math class. The person who initially sold me the hours to me was very reassuring that they had flexible payment plans and refund policy. They were the only two reasons I decided to give online tutoring a shot. I paid my payments in two separate payments. After making the first payment, I met with a tutor who was not qualified to teach my subject (not to mention that she first contacted me via phone call around 10 pm). The tutor referred to her husband as main source of her knowledge, which was very unprofessional. Also, we spent nearly 20 minutes of 90-minute session simply talking about how technology sucks in online tutoring.

Although I was not pleased with the tutor, I did not leave a bad review because she was trying to help and not everyone is perfect. Then, I had to a get a new debit card and Varsity Tutors called me every day, asking for me to make the payment. I wasn't happy with their service, but I wanted to keep them as my safety net in case I couldn't' find any in-person tutor. So, I made the mistake of making my second half of my payment. Later, I found a great tutor that is qualified and way cheaper than Varsity Tutors. However, because it took me roughly 15 days more to found the right tutor for me, they won't make any refund for my unused 7.5 hours, which is about $400. Had I known that I could not get my money back, I wouldn't have made the second payment.

It is obvious that I simply didn't know, and they are holding their "unbreakable" policy (which had to be signed in order for me to meet my "expert tutor") against me to not make the refund. The person I spoke to regarding this issue told me that if I were only a day late, she could have worked with me, but since I'm more than a day late, she cannot. If you are willing to work for a student, you should afford more than a day. I feel like as customer I wasn't heard nor helped. I understand that policies exist, so I asked if I could only get half of it refunded, and the answer I got was "Sorry, there is NO way we can break the policy." But making a refund after a day late is also breaking the policy. Varsity Tutors is working with and for students. They need to know who their customers are. They can't take advantage of that and just shove policies into our faces.

I looked up an internet ad for New York Tutoring which surprisingly took me to the "Virtual Tutoring" website (not a New York-based company, I presume, but don't know). The nice sales rep who answered the phone informed me that the "Virtual Tutoring" service is the largest in the country and actually also offers in-person tutors in any city. We discussed the possibility of having a tutor come to my home vs our using a virtual tutor who might be located anywhere else in the country. He told me that I would pay the SAME RATE for a Virtual vs an In-Home tutor. I asked why that would be and was told that "travel costs" were absorbed by the company, but that New York rates were higher because all pricing was "MARKET-BASED".

This doesn't make sense to me -- if I'm not using someone who lives in New York, why should I pay more than someone in another area? So I asked about the variation in price for New York vs other markets for virtual tutoring, but the nice sales rep wouldn't answer me and told me I was being aggressive and that Virtual Tutoring would have to hang up. As they did. Not sure if I need a math teacher to understand why comparative pricing is not offered to the consumer. Is it possible the Sales Rep was just ignorant and got scared? Why would pricing for a Virtual Service be Market Based? I think I need an econ tutor now.

Updated on 12/06/2017: Regarding my low rating of Varsity Tutors: (here is a report on the problem I originally identified). Varsity Tutoring (VT) did have a very pleasant company representative call me back, and apologized for two of their agents hanging up on me. She offered me a company credit, which I have not, to my knowledge, received. She appeared to sympathize with my complaints, listed below, and promised to bring them up to management, she also provided me with information on what she believed was the maximum difference in prices per hour across the country, but did not provide any written materials to back that up.

After discussion with her, we seemed to agree that the company might be maintaining an annoying policy of making prices available only after you give your zip code on a false premise... And providing more information to potential customers and sales agents would make the company much more attractive to potential customers. The secrecy seems counter-productive.

Consumer Affairs contacted me to ask if my complaints had been resolved. They have not because, at least to my knowledge Varsity Tutors continues to: a) charge their customers a higher rate for an online service with identical costs, which is an unfair and distasteful practice, b) insult their customers by not making their pricing information transparent and easily available and understandable, c) put strain on their sales agents/telephone operators by not providing them with answers on comparison pricing which leads them to become rude when asked for comparative pricing information. Thus making for an extremely unpleasant customer experience. And that brings my review up to date.

I needed something quickly for my daughter so I went with them. I gave them a credit card number to pay for one set of sessions and the tutor came to the house. At first, I wasn't sure because he wasn't exactly who I thought would work well for her, but he was great and very professional, and he ended up being a good fit. She responded well to him and his style of teaching, like using sticky notes to label everything in our house. This was very helpful and the learning experience was very positive. It increased her grade and made Spanish fun for what it was worth, so I was quite happy. After that was done, we were pretty much at the end of the semester, so I did not extend. Varsity Tutors was really wonderful for my daughter and I would highly recommend them.

I was referred to Varsity Tutors by a girlfriend who saw results so she asked me to try them about a year ago, and I did. Varsity Tutors was a lot better than the other tutoring option that I used before and I’m very pleased with the difference. We’ve had two different tutors. We tried the online tutor, which was excellent but my son chose to have a tutor that was in front of him, like a physical person, and so currently, we have that and she’s great. She interacts with his teachers at school so she knows where he’s at and she knows what he needs to work on. She fills me in on his progress at the end of every tutoring session and she knows what works and what doesn’t work with him. She knows him as well as us.

My son loves to go to the tutor and he’s getting more confident in his learning. The other day, he did really well on his spelling test and the first words out of his mouth were, “I can’t wait to tell my tutor.” He’s happy and he’s interested in learning, so that makes me happy too. I would highly recommend friends to Varsity Tutors. I would tell them about my experience and that they should call and ask what Varsity Tutors has to offer and see if they can help them out as much as Varsity Tutors has helped me out. Varsity Tutors is amazing and they seemed to help my child. Everything seems to be working great the way it should be and I will continue to stay with Varsity Tutors.

A couple of major issues are: I repeatedly requested an AP Biology Tutor at specific times that works for us. The tutor kept scheduling sessions while my son is in school; and claims Saturday is not available. My requests for new tutor were ignored. The instant tutor session for AP Calculus to help solve a homework problem also failed. The tutor was not able to solve the problem. My son talked more than him. Sounds like my son was leading the tutor to work on the problem. And Varsity Tutors refused to refund with reason as my request was too late; but finding a tutor consumed most of the time.

On my first interaction with them, we were matched with a tutor and it wasn't a good match. My initial reaction was that they didn't pay attention to what I was asking. But I spoke to a representative for our area and Varsity was very open and heard what I was saying. They matched my daughter Sarah with Lory from Colorado. The two hit it off and from then on, it was smooth sailing. Lory certainly helped Sarah move along and gave her some good approaches in her essays. She has gotten into Tufts University, the college of her choice and which is a selective school.

Varsity Tutors is definitely worth the time and the money. I found Varsity Tutors to be very receptive to what we were looking for and once they knew, the next match was perfect. I only wish my boys could have used the rest of the hours that we had left because from a price point, their time would have been a better situation for us. We were so disappointed with Varsity Tutors for ACT tutoring. Varsity Tutor do not have a process in place to check to make sure the student is learning the material. My daughter was taking the review test online before her sessions and was getting better scores but instead of learning and understanding the material, she was remembering the questions. It was not until she took an actual ACT and did not improve her score that we realized this. It was a waste of time and a lot of money. The local office managers tried to help by replacing the tutor but the second tutor did not work out either, she kept cancelling and rescheduling at the last minute.

And also informed me that this is an 'Elite' service catering only to the 'elitest' of families!!! But they think you will pay them $$ per hour for more of the crap. Also you cannot even try it out for 30 mins - you must directly pay and await a tutor they select who will change multiple times during your tenure unless you pay a huge amount upfront (like $7000 approx).

When I pay that much money, I expect choices, good customer treatment and guarantees of the value that the service will bring. I would not even think of calling back because the lady I spoke to on the phone obviously had no customer handling skills and should never have been working in a call center if she was Deputy Director of anything. I paid for a package of SAT tutoring hours for my daughter. She began with one tutor who was pretty useless, so asked to change to another one. The other tutor was a bit more knowledgeable but very unreliable, constantly changed and cancelled appointment dates - to the point where it was simply not possible to use the hours that we had paid for.

The company then contacted us 3 days before she was scheduled to take the SAT, to say that her current tutor was no longer available but they could assign a new one. I contacted them explaining that was no longer possible with such little time remaining before the SAT, and asked them to refund the money paid for hours that we were unable to use because of the tutor's flakiness. The person I spoke to, named Andrea, flat-out refused, saying that the contractual terms stipulate no refunds of unused hours. They of course had never shown me these terms, because the entire sign-up transaction was conducted over the phone. I asked to speak to a manager, and Andrea promised that the manager would call me back the next day - that was more than a week ago, I have heard nothing from them.

That is quite a good scam they have going, taking customers' money and then hiring tutors who they know won't be available. That way they earn pure profit, without needing to pay anyone for services rendered. I will be contacting the Attorney General's Office about this as well, hopefully they will investigate and shut down this sleazebag operation.

I find this request an absolute breach of privacy and an untenable one in this age of identity theft. I spent over 2 hours jumping through the required hoops to qualify as a tutor and then I reached this complete impasse as I refuse to relinquish that information which requires compromising one's identity by submitting confidential information online. I think this is egregious and I think the company should be called out for this requirement as part of their application process.

There must be another way that the company can proceed to verify information about their applicants without said applicant jeopardizing his/her identity. This needs to be addressed. I brought this to the attention of several operators who worked for the company and all I was told is 'perhaps this is not a good fit.' That is absolutely absurd. I am a super qualified tutor and am a perfect fit to tutor students in mathematics. I think their requirement borders on an illegality.

I purchased a tutoring package for my daughter. I knew that there were no monetary refunds for unused hours but I did verify the package was both transferable and with no expiration date. Four months ago toward the end of the school year, I had 3 hours left. I tried to get a math teacher but they could not find one! I then was pointed to their online tutor where one contact equaled one session even if you needed help for just 15 minutes... That was out of the question (my kids use tutor.com for that). Now, it's been 4 months since they could not find a one-on-one math tutor, and I get a phone call advising my hours have expired!

I signed my son up for tutoring to prepare for the ACT. The tutor he was assigned to would only be online half of the time. He rearranged his work schedule to be available for tutoring. He would get online and wait. She would not be there half of the time. His ACT score did not improve. I didn't really expect it to based on the inconsistency of tutoring. Now they are refusing to refund my money for the unused portion of hours. I understand that I should be held responsible for the amount of time he used (even though there was no improvement on his scores), but to be forced to pay for unused hours is wrong. After reading through these reviews I see my son was not the only one who had a tutor to be a no show. I should have done better research. I would avoid this company at all costs.

I found another tutor and requested my money back. They say I signed a contract that I could only get my money back after one hour was used. The salesman and the website state there is a money back guarantee. In my book that is fraud, no service for payment and no money back guarantee. Steer clear.

The sales rep complete misrepresented the service. Not only is the subject not available on their drop-down instant help page (90% of my reason for signing up), but the tutor is not an expert in my area. Also when I went to find customer service number to talk to someone about my concerns, the site was down. I was on the site earlier in the day and there was no warning the site would be down.

In addition when I talked to someone he kept insisting my needs were being met. When I repeatedly explained that the reason I signed up was for immediate (online) help, he dismissed this completely. I had to ultimately get a tutor through Wyzant. It's been less than 24 hours that I gave them my money and they refuse to reimburse me without going through at least one tutor and their refund policy. Also they don't offer a trial period which is nuts. Stay away. Use Wyzant if you can.

I was desperate to find an algebra tutor after I couldn't find any local tutors in my area. I asked Varsity if they had private face to face tutoring and they didn't. They offered online tutoring, which isn't for me and I just felt like I need a private face to face tutor. They made it seem like they are gods. Very good at convincing and persuading me that they are amazing. I didn't learn a thing, my first tutoring session was awful. Then my tutor canceled the second time. So they offered me instant tutoring and it was HORRIBLE! There was foreigners trying to teach me with accents. I couldn't understand what they were saying. Another one was rude.

One of my tutors got mad at me whenever I used my calculator even though my class strongly advises us to use a calculator and kept yelling at me whenever he saw me using a calculator, despite the fact that I have dyscalculia, that made me feel even more insecure about math and I canceled that session because I couldn't stop crying that entire day. I complained to customer service. They are provokingly nice however they do not answer your questions. And I've complained about the insensitivity of that tutor and they don't seem to care that their tutors are rude and not that educated. I've gotten a couple answers wrong on my homework because of them and I even had to correct them now and then.

After my horrible experience with Varsity Tutors, I've been asking them for a refund for about a week now. They hung up on me once when I mentioned a refund and then they said my account manager will call me back on that day to discuss refund and it's been a week later and no call. Which is hilarious because when I was interested in their tutoring they were so quick and eager to talk to me but when I asked for a refund they are no help and not as friendly. I honestly think they are procrastinating so 60 days can pass by and then it'll be my responsibility. I will be contacting my credit card company and possibly my local attorney and filling out a consumer complaint form. I am truly disappointed of the results of my experience with Varsity. It was only one session that made me realize this whole thing was a red flag, I wanted a refund right after my first session but of course they don't care as long as they have your money because you have to pay in full.

    Original Review: April 27, 2017

I needed a tutor for my 4th grader. I figured this would be easy enough and booked 30 hours with Varsity Tutors. They are eager to have you pay upfront. After a couple of weeks, I was placed with a tutor for 4th-grade basic reading and writing. She canceled our first session and arrived late or canceled the next few. I should have known at that moment. She was a decent tutor but unreliable. She even brought her child along for tutoring which I let go because my son seemed to bond with her. Cancellation after cancellation later I called Varsity Tutors and after a three-week wait was assigned another tutor who had little to no elementary experience. He completed a total of two sessions and "bailed" (as my son says.) The truth is, we live out of the metro area and nobody is willing to do the commute! We stated on day one that we were not interested in the online platform.

I called Varsity Tutors, at that point I had had enough of calling and waiting for them to sort this out. We wanted tutoring services, the service that we had paid in full for in January. We were not looking for AP Physics but a very basic service for a 4th grader. Four weeks later I am still waiting for tutor number three. We have since hired someone local and reliable. I spoke to a director today who told me because I was outside of my 60-day window I could not get any of the money back. Even though we have only completed 13 hours since January and that they wanted me to give them another try. I am not sure how a company fails to fulfill their end of the contract and will call me out on mine. Tutoring services are NOT being provided. Meanwhile, school ends in three week! I would not suggest this company to anybody. I have wasted time and energy and have been left totally frustrated with this experience.

Varsity Tutors are responsive to your needs.  They address any concerns you have and provide appropriate solutions.  Initially, I was not satisfied with my daughter's tutor, however after I addressed it with the company, I received a call back from Amanda, one of their Directors, who immediately provided a solution that went above and beyond expectations.  I highly recommend them.

    Original Review: Feb. 25, 2017

Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed! They essentially place your child's academic future in the hands of a College STUDENT who is not equipped with the experience and perceptiveness to identify your child's area of improvement, nor are they responsible. Here's what happened - judge for yourself... My daughter's ACT score remained the exact same as her "cold test" score. The "tutor" initially met with my daughter in person and then said he had to go back to college, which was out-of-state. As a result, he switched from in-person to online video chat sessions. He also was tutoring a total of 6 students in addition to attending college full time. Due to HIS scheduling conflicts, my daughter's sessions were far apart. I assumed (which I will NEVER do again) that Varsity Tutors would keep their promise to me, which was they manage the Tutors closely.

If they did in fact manage this specific tutor, they would have IMMEDIATELY seen the red flags. The reason I say "Immediately" is because when I called them to complain, they pulled up my daughter's file and told me they could see exactly why my daughter's score did not improve - "It's impossible for a student to retain all of the information when the sessions are scheduled so far apart". Hmmm, well who scheduled them this far apart?? Their tutor did! Not my daughter. And, of course, I assumed this was the process, as I have never used a tutor before - this was our first time. I honestly feel they should have refunded my money (almost $1,000) or assigned free sessions to work with another tutor, but neither was offered. Basically, there was no remediation. My daughter was so disappointed and it ended up impacting academically of course.

It's been 2 weeks and we're still not connected with a tutor. They offered online tutoring which we did not want, so I called and asked for a manager. I was told I would hear back from someone that day, however it's been 2 days and I haven't heard from anyone. I'm guessing because we have some free hours left that we paid for, that we're at the bottom of the list. Each time we call, we get someone else who gives us the runaround. We are incredibly frustrated and disappointed, and at this point we have requested that our money be refunded. I would not recommend using them to anyone!

Scheduling for tutoring sessions was flexible - depending on my work schedule. During the sessions we discussed material, practiced essay writing and practiced questions in quantitative and verbal sections. The exercise for each day was determine by my knowledge level for a specific topic and what we both decided will be most useful for my learning process. At the end of each session, the tutor gave me assignments to work on before the following session. We discussed the assignments at the beginning of the sessions before we started on new material.

The tutoring help me to understand lots of study material that I would not have on my own. The first few sessions went according to the schedule we set, then the tutor didn't show up for a session. Varsity Tutors quickly switched me to a new tutor and we started all over again. Once again sessions would be set up and then cancelled or moved for the convenience of the tutor. Several sessions were changed at the last minute or cancelled. The full amount hours of tutoring service contracted were not used because of the cancellations and rescheduling.

When I asked for a refund for the hours not used, I was told no by Varsity Tutors. They stated that we have gone beyond our 60 days from the time of purchase and no longer qualified for a refund. The only reason we didn't use all of the hours was because of cancelled sessions and switching tutors in the middle of the scheduled sessions. I believe the instructors use Varsity Tutors as a convenient way to make money on the side and when it's inconvenient for them, they cancel or reschedule, without regard for the student's best interest and needs. The only thing they are very good at is a "phone apology" for the sorry service. They get a lot of practice in this area.

When I called, the person on the phone was really good at buttering me up and convincing me that I'd be all caught up in class. They made it seem like they were gods. Obviously, desperate me fell for it. Do NOT fall for it. If you look at "Testimonials and Reviews," you'll see ONLY positive, good reviews. It seemed to good to be true, and I'd google other reviews on them to no success. Varsity Tutors has managed to FILTER reviews on them, only letting positive reviews influence you. There's no room for someone to review them, including me. Imagine how many bad things have been screened for. Reviews are biased, so you don't see the full side.

Now, on my experience with Varsity Tutors: My tutor was ok. I was excited at first, because my tutor's bio stated a degree related to the subject I was studying as well as coming from a very prestigious, TOP university. Unfortunately, the level of depth my subject required was WAY too much. I don't blame my tutor, but I blame Varsity Tutors for acting like they had the help I needed. They didn't even ask to see the material I was studying to confirm whether or not they could help. It seems like they assumed I was stupid and believed that covering the basics was enough to guarantee me success. They honestly said, "yeah we'll catch you right up." The people that run Varsity Tutors had the NERVE to guarantee my academic success when that's completely in control of their overworked, under compensated tutors.

There were times when I had to correct my tutor or many other moments when they didn't know the answer. It got to the point that I didn't feel the tutor was greatly knowledgeable enough to help me, so I wanted to quit the program. Again, nothing on my tutor. The fact that I asked friends from top universities such as an IVY LEAGUE who couldn't help me already says enough about the material I was dealing with. When I called to get a refund, NO ONE picked up the first time. Hmm, funny that they picked up when I wanted to sign up and pay for the program. I left a message and told them to call me back. Waited a few days and they didn't call me back. Ok, maybe they were busy. I called back a second time from a DIFFERENT phone, and they did pick up. They claimed that they'd call me back within that same day.

As SOON as I hung up, I never got a call back. It took some credit card company intervention to get a hold of them. Let's be honest. They were probably avoiding my call every possible chance to avoid giving me back my refund, so that when the 60 days were over, it'd be my fault for not getting a hold of them. I'd say having to wait a few days to call is maybe tolerable, but not getting a call back in over a week? Unacceptable. Please be careful and lord I pray you read these reviews before getting with their program. The testimonials are from rich parents that have the money to splurge on basic tutoring for kids that probably didn't have the discipline to learn the basics on their own. The amount of time a tutor wastes with you is an insult for someone that's capable of self learning but just needed PROFESSIONAL/KNOWLEDGEABLE/QUALIFIED help.

Do notice that most testimonials are from 12th grade and under, and the majority are for standardized tests such as SATs or APs. In my case, I was learning abstract material that went above and beyond my basic class, and my tutor, having a degree in that material, should have been able to help me. But as I found out, there's no guarantee. I guess my target audience for this review is for people that never needed tutoring and considered giving in because they were desperate. Remember, if you initially could learn stuff on your own, it's possible the material is now just extremely difficult, and a tutor is not going to make you smarter or bridge the gap. A tutor is for those that absolutely can't do it on their own. So know your strengths and know what you actually need. And for everyone's sake, do NOT let this trash company scam you.

I feel I have to write something to raise the company's attention for the quality of their tutor service! I spent a big money, purchased hours from Varsity Tutors to help my kids' preparing for standard tests, PSAT, SAT and AP exams. They don't need seat in generic prep classes for everything but will need to target their weak spots. I expected this one-to-one tutoring be more efficient and effective to help them achieve the goal.

However, we couldn't achieve this with Varsity Tutors. They can't provide a qualified tutor for test prep! My kids had to educate those tutors they sent in to us on SAT tests and AP exams! My daughter has graduated from high school without benefit from Varsity Tutors' service at all. She feel lucky to not have to deal with those tutors anymore. My son, now after several tryouts, refuses to use any more tutors from Varsity Tutors. He thinks they "Waste his time instead of help him"! I do see myself. They come in first time unprepared and start, have my kids tell them what will be tested and which format of test will be used and how they can help? I had to hire another private tutor out of Varsity Tutors to help my son on his PSAT prep. My son was so impressed by that private tutor.

Varsity Tutors now is a big headache to me! They refuse to refund us remaining balance. I paid over $3000 and they charged us to tryout their tutors. We still have most of the hours. So can you tell me what I need to do to get out of this without loss my remaining money. We have been charged by those unproductive tryouts! It seems totally wrong way for Varsity Tutors' conduct business like this! BTW, the Varsity Tutors' administrative ladies are very nice and polite although they have not found a right tutor for my kids.

I had a contract with Varsity Tutors for my daughter (SAT). She had taken the exam twice before with no improvement and Varsity Tutors assured me that she would improve her score at least 100 points. She worked diligently with the tutor, but when she retook the test, she had the same score as before. When I confronted Varsity Tutors about their "100% money back guarantee" they told me that all they could offer my daughter was more tutoring. This was impossible as she cannot take another Sat and get into college in time. I was extremely disappointed with their false advertising of a money back guarantee. This was a terrible experience for my daughter and I feel swindled.
