Sylvan is hurting my pocket but my son was struggling. The teacher that he had wasn’t right there. My husband and I were frustrated and we didn't know what to do at home. We were all sitting there, crying because we didn't know how to break the apples for him to understand multiplication and division. So, I started doing research and we came across Sylvan. I went there when I was young so I called them. My son shuts down when he doesn’t understand. He doesn't wanna talk about it. But right now, he’s happy. He goes four days a week and on a Friday, he wanna go. He says the teachers at Sylvan are great. They explain to him everything and he understands them the way they're teaching him. He likes it. So that makes me happy.
Sylvan is helping him a lot. My son has been doing this for the past three months and it’s going great. He’s teaching me division because I’ve forgotten and he learned all his multiplications. It's worth it seeing my son do his homework without asking for help and just doing it. I hope he uses Sylvan in the long run. We paid for 200 and something sessions, so he's gonna be going there for a few months. We started with Math because he was struggling with multiplication and wasn't getting it. But he mastered that and he is now in division. Sylvan is trying to get him up to grade level when he starts fifth grade, and they're gonna work on that. Later on, they’re gonna help him out with Literature. He's good with Reading, but more on Spelling and putting his punctuations in the proper place where they're supposed to be. He will be doing both.
Sylvan is expensive but it’s worth it. My daughter is going on seventh grade and she’s always been an A student. She's never asked us for help. She's gotten on by herself, which is great, because if I had to put both children in Sylvan, I would need four jobs. Everything has been very smooth. The boat’s been rolling and the website is great too. I recommend Sylvan. This has been lifesaving. My home is calmer now when we come home from work. My children both do their homework and do not ask us. My son’s grades have gone up and most likely his confidence level too.

Sylvan has been great. They've been very responsive in helping our daughter. She's doing Reading and she's doing better. I just feel like it's very expensive. It's $60 an hour and we have to do it two hours a week minimum. So, it adds up really quickly.

My son likes Sylvan. He enjoys it, and he understands stuff. Getting him in was easy because it was some type of program that was done through his school, and all I had to do was register him. I didn't have to make any payments. I do tap in their website every now and then just to check on the status of his learning. The only thing is I don't know how to read the bar graph that they have set up. I had to ask them what it means because it's in different colors and numbers. I confused with that. Other than that, Sylvan stays in contact with you.

My daughter takes tutoring from Sylvan. She's been going twice a week since February, but we took the summer off. And she'll go back in August. She's in first grade and she's done very well. She's made a lot of improvement and she loves her tutor. She's also gone up 47% in reading. Sylvan follows up at the end of each tutoring session, on what they covered and how she was doing. They reassess her every so often to see if they need to redirect their focus. We've had a very positive experience in all aspects. I would recommend them for anyone's kids.

Sylvan's a busy place. There's a lot going on ‘cause they have a lot of people. But my daughter was very happy. She went in for 2 months for the SAT prep. It was hard because they were touching on subjects that she didn't know or hadn't seen. The first part of it seemed a review. The second, the middle and the end parts became a lot harder as she had to sit down, learn and practice. We had our PSAT practice test with her school. Then they did an actual SAT practice test with her. They were able to pin down what areas she was struggling with. Her program was based on the areas that she missed. She did well on her test. She went from a 950 to an 1,100. Sylvan did their job. The price is high. It's $85 an hour. But it's definitely worth the money. You'll see results. I did a different tutoring service, and it was pricier and not as good. Sylvan's customer service is excellent as well. The proctor is nice and very understanding.

I went to Sylvan when I was a kid and now my daughter goes there for Reading. She's gained confidence and more willing to read at home. She was able to build some of the previous skills that she was missing so that she could move along with her reading level. Sylvan has worked for my child. She's enjoyed it and is excited to go and do it. If others have a child that's struggling, then Sylvan would be worth trying.

My son just finished kindergarten, and we noticed that he was behind. We have two other kids who are older than him and a son who is younger than him. We've never had a situation where our kids are academically showing signs of being behind, so we were initially trying to get him caught up with his peers. We went with Sylvan and it was an easy process with them. The people that we're working with there in Abilene are super friendly. My husband and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. They've explained everything to us. We have Zoom calls periodically to talk about our son's progress, and it makes us feel they're invested. We've also talked about having my son's school RDI person on the calls too once school starts back again because we're seeing some differences from what the school is seeing to what Sylvan’s seeing. That way, we can all be on the same page to help him.
We have to drive 45 minutes to get there. This last week, my son was not wanting to go but the biggest reason was we had to go later in the day and he had to stop watching TV. It messed up what he had in mind of what he wanted to do. But overall, every time he leaves, he's smiling. He's happy and excited. He shows us the prizes he got or how many points he earned that day for rewards later. It's been a positive experience for him. We've talked about Sylvan very positively with the people who have asked us about them. It is expensive, but with good tutoring, you're gonna have to pay for it. It's worth the price.

My daughter was in speech and occupational therapy, and they were doing a lot of literacy type stuff with her. She was in that for six years. It's been great with Sylvan and I would recommend them. The people are very friendly. They do the tutoring on iPad. They have games or they read a paragraph and answer questions. If your child is struggling with Reading and Math, Sylvan is the place to go. My youngest can be a little temperamental at times but they seem to enjoy it.

Enrolling with Sylvan was good experience and I would recommend them. They're very helpful and kind. My daughter did English and Reading and went through different seasons, one summer, and when she was in kindergarten. I like their portal login. I usually get a link in the messages when I confirm her tutoring session and it's nice to have that online access, too. If she gets so many tokens or tickets, she can pick a price. I'm hoping she will keep growing more of an interest and a desire to improving her reading. A few of my friends utilize Sylvan and some doctor's kids as well attended. They're all happy.

Sylvan Learning has been a great resource for my son in helping him learn and develop. They have been more than accommodating as far as helping him develop educationally. Everyone has been more than happy to help. They got a great personality. And you can tell that they're all interested to see the children develop. Awesome experience. I targeted Reading and Writing being that my son's grades were subpar in those areas. Based off my son's NWEA scores he recently received, they have improved. There's a correlation between when he was going to Sylvan and when he got his scores back versus the previous year.

We've only been doing Sylvan for about a month and a half and my only concern is that I don't know what my child is learning. We have a progress report but I need more information. She’s doing Reading and I can’t see a difference. It's pre-kindergarten to kindergarten, so it's letters and it’s hard to gauge.

My 8 year old daughter was struggling in 2nd grade due to grief and sicknesses. Once I put her in Sylvan during the 2nd semester at school her understanding grew and her grades began to climb. For the 1st time in the whole school year she finally made the AB honor roll and she received the BUG award (Bring Up Grade). I'm so thankful for Sylvan for a job well done.

Sylvan Learning has been awesome. Everyone's great when I go there, and my daughter loves the lady that helps her. She was bored yesterday and said, "I wish I had Sylvan today." She wants to go there when it's not even scheduled. It's good that she loves it. There was another little girl in her class that I'm friends with her mom, and I mentioned to do Sylvan instead of summer school. It is a little expensive though. This summer, I cut down to one day a week because of that, plus I have to pay for summer care.

If your child is struggling in any area and you are looking for a difference, sign up with Sylvan Learning Centers. It is not cheap, but it is worth every dime. It is much better, more hands-on, smaller setting. So, my son was able to focus better. Also, the tutors do wonderfully. Some of them are older, so they take a little time. All of them are in education in some kind of way. They're hands-on and helpful. They help rein it in for my son. He has mastered a ton of skills since he has been there. He enjoys it. We do every Wednesday and Saturday. When children get home from school, they just wanna veg out. But once my son came from Sylvan, I could tell he learned something. He would be more plugged in and more engaged when he would come home. I could tell that he was stimulated when he was there.
When we first started there, they were going through some management changes. So, the communication was a sketchy at first. But once Doctor Ira took over, it has been consistent. I'm talking about the reminder apps going out when they're supposed to, him greeting us when we're there. If it was not him greeting us, it would be Miss Leslie. It's personable. I appreciate it.

My son was struggling a little bit in school and I got him registered because I used Sylvan in Columbia before as well. But he did very good. The teachers there were wonderful. I just moved and the only thing that I didn't wanna move and leave was Sylvan, which sounds crazy. I wish they had one here in Huntsville, Madison. With Sylvan, my son was able to meet with the teachers. Whereas with Kumon, they give the kids these booklets and you just have to sit with them at home and make sure they do them. It's very repetitious and not effective. It was probably a big waste of $250 a month. I paid Sylvan more but you got the one-on-one with the teachers.
The tutor worked on Reading and Math with my son. His score was a little bit low in Reading. So he was barely in the area level where he would pass. But by the time he took the test, after about two and a half months, his scores drastically increased, which was amazing. And he passed the state assessment with flying colors. My son’s experience was great with Sylvan and he wasn't hesitant. Some kids don't wanna be there. But he liked going. They give the kids little prizes or awards as they reach milestones so the kids want to keep coming back. A friend of mine’s son went for about a year and a half and he's been on the honor roll ever since. He's now a junior in high school. So, I would recommend Sylvan.

I would recommend Sylvan. My child was tutored in Math and ELA and it was a very positive experience. His self-confidence has improved and it was what got him turned around. James, my son, is my wife's nephew. We had a kinship guardian on him when he was four years old and he is now 12. Almost five years ago, my wife passed away, and James wanted to stay with me, and I had to fight his mother and all my in-laws. So he was put through the wringer. We had to adopt him and it was such a long process. He was worn down mentally at the end of all this. So Sylvan was almost like a wake-up call. The director of the location that I'm dealing with knew the ins and outs of the educational process from dealing with the different districts and she was very helpful in getting me to decipher what my district was about to do to me, which is extremely unfair. The DCP&P would be involved and I did not wanna go that route at all.

Everybody there at Sylvan Learning Centers was very nice. When we met the center director, I had confidence in her because of the way she handled herself and spoke about their programs. The tutor gave him a lot of confidence in being able to do Math. We were coming from a not awesome school situation. And we found ourselves being home schooled suddenly. So as a transition from school to home school, filling in the gaps that we had and figuring out what we needed to do. I'm also a teacher, and having that data collection and knowing that you're on the right track is helpful. I've had a couple of other families that have gone and had just progress monitoring type stuff that it's very helpful for home school moms for that. It was a very positive experience.
I've already spoken very highly of Sylvan Learning to my home school group. It was not cheap, but it was a good value for the money and cheaper than private school. We just took a couple of months off for the summer. We would go back and do progress monitoring again in August and make sure that we're getting what my son needs.

As soon as I sent the email out with my information, a lady from Sylvan Learning Centers called. I sent the email less than an hour when she called. She was thorough. She asked me a lot of important information, especially about the personality Melody has. That was a big thing. Because she tried to see how my daughter has learned. It was very detailed. I love the fact that it was a lot of information. It was very thorough and helpful. I was at my wit's end. The lady was very good with enrollment. I felt like it was about Melody with the whole enrollment. It was focused on her, especially with her knowing her personality.
My daughter loves Sylvan. The first time, she was scared. But now, she gets very excited. She's more eager. Sylvan helps with their confidence, too. She would come out not tired or drained. She's eager to tell us what they did that day or what they said and her points that she got. She hates it if she has to miss it. Her reading and comprehension, and memory were the things that Sylvan is focusing on with her. The paperwork that she has for them to do, especially specific to what's going on with her after they did the STAR testing and the analysis to find out what she needs. They go through that list that they gave us. And they give her the practice on more reading for her. Also, they communicate with the teachers to make sure that she was on the same page too. It's a lot of over-communicating, which is a good thing. It takes away that worry of the parent. It’s very focused, organized and detailed and makes sure that the child gets every single thing that they need.

We got a voucher through the state and we did Varsity Tutors. It wasn’t very well explained to us what we could utilize with the services or with that voucher. Varsity Tutors had us doing one hour a week for my son and it was virtual whereas Sylvan is in-person and interactive. Plus, there were up to four hours a week or 24 hours in each session that we could use. They were flexible around our work and school schedules.
My son has a good time when he goes to Sylvan. So it's a completely different learning experience for him. He is working on his reading skills but they have more options available. He likes the one-on-one or the smaller group sessions and that there are some male tutors, which is helpful for little boys. Sylvan’s tutoring is very high quality. We've already seen major progress in our son's reading level over the course of just a few short weeks and it's different than other tutoring where the kids enjoy going. You could see the tangible results.

Sylvan strives to help the children. Initially, the tutor focused on Reading, English and Math but in high school, we utilized the homework where they helped my child with whatever he needed to work on and we built a strategy on what to work with. There were some options for college students to come to the high school and tutoring on certain days. So we split up everything that my child needed between the high school and Sylvan. He was getting four days but he was doing two days a week at Sylvan. He doesn't like going because it's extra work but it encourages him. He has an IEP so he strives to be on the same plane as the other children. It gives him more confidence knowing that he’s keeping up with his classmates. Timewise, he would rather do other things with that hour. But he sees the final outcome as being a positive.

My son loves Sylvan. He's engaged. When he leaves there, he's always excited about what he learned and what he earned. He feels like he's doing better in class. It gives him more confidence. He picks up books and reads them now without me having to ask him. The tutor and my son focus on Math but they also do Reading, Writing and Comprehension. My son sits at a table with a couple of other children and they work on different projects. They take speed tests. Yesterday, they were doing a comprehension test to see where he's at with what Sylvan is teaching him. In the short period of time he's been there, he went from a second-grade comprehension to grade level and now, they're working on getting him up to fifth grade. And he's only in the fourth grade. It was easy enrolling in Sylvan but it is expensive. It’s out of reach for a lot of people and I wouldn't have been able to afford it. My father is paying for it.

We started out for an hour. Now that it's summer, we had the option of doing two hours and my child was like, "Yeah, I wanna do it." He did not kick and scream about it. He enjoys going. He's primarily on reading and writing, but we're gonna be adding math to the mix too. It's great. If you can afford it, it's a really good option. When I called customer service, somehow the phone got ported to another location, but they still helped me and knew who I was talking about. So far, our experience with Sylvan has been fantastic. Our child absolutely loves going and it's been very encouraging as far as her progress and learning to read and her general skills with attacking tasks at school. Where we are right now, the big focus has been reading structure and phonics and the basics, to get her a little bit on grade level and above. She talks about how much fun she had and what she learned and then about her points. They have a point system. My child is very incentivized by prizes. She's winning all of it. Anything that creates a structure for her to feel like she's winning or getting ahead, she likes it. They're great, super responsive, on top of it and very accommodating.

Sylvan is near us. My son is doing English because his level got below his average. Before, it was high but he's not practicing as well. The first assessment was bad. But the second assessment, they told me he's at his third level, and he may be at the mid now of the third level. Mainly, he's improving. He is a good learner. The problem is he doesn't focus all the time. So, he always needs someone to push him and to make him work. Whenever he's not willing to work, he gets bad grades. My son is loving the teacher. They are always giving their feedback and they are helpful. I'm happy with them. I feel that they are good. My son is able to work with them, and they are nice.
He loves Sylvan but he's feeling as if it's a punishment that we are sending him to the tutorial. He doesn't want to go. So, I'm telling him how the more he works harder, he will get less sessions. At first, they said he needs 150 session. And when they redid the assessment at the time he wanted to work, he got only 50 sessions. Until now, he's still has 38. Last week, they said they still have 46 sessions. Overall, this thing gave him a big push. It was something positive for him. I'm so happy with Sylvan. Sylvan designed a program to figure out where my son's level of understanding was with algebra. It looks like they've taken him back to the very, very beginning. This is our second month and they're still at pre-algebra. So, it's not going along very fast. But he said it's something to do with the way that this program is set up. My son needs to do a couple of things and then they test him. If you don't do well on that test, then it bumps you back. So it keeps bumping back and bumping back. But there's a second way to do it, and that is what they started last week. So I'm hoping that it maybe goes along a little quicker. But I have nothing against the tutor. It's just the way the program is designed.
Josh from Sylvan has been pretty good about asking what we wanna do, like being flexible with the time. I told them that my son has to have homework. He has to be doing algebra every day. So they send him a little homework papers. Whatever little homework papers or whatever he does, they keep all that stuff. But I'm a homeschool mom and I need something for my grade book. I like Sylvan Learning Centers. I reached out to them. They did an assessment. They told me where my son was. He was behind. He has been going there every Saturday, because we live so far from the closest center, for eight weeks now. My son loves it. He likes that it would be on his own pace but he would still get his work done. That's a big thing for kids. The classroom setting is harder. My son would rather do tutoring Monday through Friday than to be in a classroom. He admires it a lot. I have seen improvement, especially with the speed of my son’s his reading. And Sylvan will do a reevaluation to see where he's at in July. That's exciting too. I appreciate the staff that are there. They work with me. Even with my payments, they've been patient with me.
However, they have a new staff in the Henderson location where I go. She's still learning, but it's slow. I like the communication with Holly at that place because when I made my payment, she would send me an invoice and let me know it was paid for. But with this new lady, I would have to wait a week or two, and she still doesn't know. She's confused. There’s a lot of going on when it comes to getting my invoices and my payments.
The past four weeks have been bad. She's in this field, so I don't know why it's so hard for her. It’s like she prolongs it. And, “Oh, I don't know.” Or she'll try to keep talking. "Just print it out. Give it to me." You wanna talk and talk, and don't even know what you're talking about or you're confused. We're having a conversation, you can understand me and I can understand you. It's not like—“Just let me figure it out, and I'll get back to you.” I don't want that. It's too much for me. "Get to the point. I made a payment. Can I get my invoice?" And that would be it. Other than that, I'm amazed with Sylvan. I respect the company.

The governor is helping people to get tutored for free and when I chose Sylvan versus the other companies that contract with the State of Arizona, they don't offer it online or at home. They offered it in person in school, which makes it easy as far as convenience. If you're going in person, there's always a tutor there. Also, their tutors have a bachelor's degree at the very minimum and they have a license in teaching. They are very friendly and the one we go to is very homely. It's very unthreatening and class is very well decorated.
They focus on ELA with my twins who are in the second grade and our daughter, based on their test, is scoring at the third-grade level and our son is testing at fifth grade. But it's hard to measure the progress. Sylvan is doing their own program the whole time so it doesn't benefit the children directly with their homework or with what they are doing in class and it's hard to know the results. Giving a half-hour for doing their own program and the other half letting the children, if they have homework, to work on them and working on their own current curriculum may be helpful.

When I made the decision to go to Sylvan to seek outside assistance for my son, they have been extremely helpful as far as breaking down my son's IEP in a more understandable way versus the school. They have really pointed out a lot of gaps as to where the school has failed him and the school's lack of ability to accommodate my son has been a little disturbing. Sylvan has helped bridge those gaps and I wish we have taken that road sooner. Things would have been much better long-term for my son. Unfortunately, he's a junior in high school, so we're playing severe catch-up. But Sylvan's been a huge help in his academic confidence, making him a little bit more of a better student, and making him able to understand the work and where he was missing some crucial learning gaps.
My son goes to Sylvan twice a week and they email me and all of his teachers at the beginning of every week. So the communication on their end is fantastic as far as communicating what they need me to do as regards what my son worked on that day and what he still needs to work on. I wish the communication in return from the school was better but that is what it is.

My son has only been on Sylvan's program for a couple of months. They did an assessment and they are working on him with lessons, taking him back to where his competency level is and working from there forward, and he is improving little by little. Overall, he is doing better. He's a reluctant learner. But he has started saying that going to reading tutor is not so bad, which is a good thing for him. He has improved on his spelling tests and his reading comprehension test at school. Sylvan is definitely worth the expense and the effort if someone is having reading problems because they have a good program. And it's effective. Iit is pricey. But to learn to read, it's worth it. The teachers and the administrator at Sylvan are really kind and very personable. They make my son feel like he's the cool kid coming into class. So it's a very welcoming atmosphere.

We're doing Reading and Writing with Sylvan and we’ve seen significant improvement. We've only been with them for two months now and my child seems to be very engaged. Normally, with extracurricular activities, he usually protests or pouts or has difficulty going. He never protests with Sylvan. He's always in a good mood and runs in. Sylvan has a store where you earn points. It's all gamified. On the first day, when he did the assessment, he picked out the toy he wanted and he's been eagerly working towards it and counting his points every single day. That helps keep him motivated. It's fun for him and he's happy with it.
When I started looking for a tutor, I was just looking for some enrichment. Natalie did an amazing job explaining the process and the hours, what would be required to see movement and also prepare my child for September, which is the whole point we're doing it. There was a little bit of a sticker shock in the sense that the commitment was more than we were anticipating. The price is competitive. We just wanted to get our son something for the summer and then, you sit down and talk about only coming once a week for an hour isn't that much time and the expectation shouldn't be that high for what you can accomplish in eight to seven weeks over the summer. We've already been here for eight weeks and I completely understand that.
Breaking down how many hours are necessary was a learning curve for us. I wasn't expecting it. But I recommend Sylvan. We're very happy with the outcome and the process. It's a very well-run operation and easy to get to. It’s easy as well to communicate with them. They've been very flexible in terms of scheduling. I have nothing but a glowing recommendation.

Sylvan has its ducks in a row a little better. They seem to know what they're doing a little more and they're not just guessing day to day. They have a plan. My son is doing math with them. They tell me that he has mastered five skills. He's only in third grade, so I'm hoping that this school year, he'll be a little more caught up with his peers. I didn't expect the world to be completely changed over the course of two months, but he is enjoying going to Sylvan. He comes home with a more positive attitude about math, which is very important.
He earns little rewards, little pieces of candy or little tokens of some sort while he's there. He's very proud of himself when he earns something. So, I know that's a good thing. They give him little pieces of paper that explain what he's done every time he goes. And then he gets a behavior score, 0 to 5, so I know whether he has listened and followed directions while he's there as well. He's very proud to show me that each time.
Going with Sylvan is very expensive, but it is worth it for me. We're getting certified teachers and they have a plan in place. I'm very satisfied. The customer service reps are very polite. They've been very accommodating and very understanding. I've not had to cancel anything, but we've had to be late a couple of times due to traffic, and they've been very understanding and accommodating. They've made my son feel very welcome, and I appreciate that. I would love to have him in more subjects. I understand their requirements of two hours a week for one subject is to help the kiddos learn a little bit better, and more comprehensively, but they are in school too, so that requirement seems a little heavy for me.

We've been doing the tutorial with Sylvan since March and she seems more confident with her reading. Before, she would just look at the word and try to start a conversation about something else and not read the word at all. So, now, she at least tries. And her teacher has noticed a difference as well in her willingness to read in class. She’s getting the help that she needs so she can be a stronger reader. I can tell the difference in her. Sylvan gives us updates but I don't know what's going on inside of the center. I'm more of a visual person, so I would like to see what they do in the session and how the students are learning. When I get her home, she reads some words and it seems like it's going smoother. But I was curious to know what they were talking about and how it was being taught to her. We tested okay for math so Gail, the head honcho over there, created a plan to where we're gonna work on reading and writing. When he's made progress with that, we'll go over to math and we'll incorporate math within our plan too. Also, I can communicate with the staff at the Sylvan in Tacoma and they are very responsive, in a timely manner too, which is awesome. Sylvan is doing wonders and I love it. It was very easy to sign up with them. We did a pretest for my son and after that, we knew exactly where he stood. Then all we had to do was sign paperwork. They gave me a lot of background about Sylvan, how long they were open, how many people they helped, and how they came out on top. Then they gave me a price range of what I could afford and what I couldn't. And they really helped me out with it.
When we first went, my son's reading reading was at a 2.2 average. Throughout this year, he was recommended to staying back in the third grade if he didn't pass his last two tests. And this past week, he passed all four of his tests. His reading went up to a 3.7 with Sylvan. He goes to Sylvan right after school at 5 o'clock. He's a little tired, but he loves it due to the fact that at the end, they give them reward points. If you get so many reward points, you can cash out on them. He even said that he can tell his reading has improved a lot, which definitely shows.
Sylvan is family-owned and they're fair to talk to. To keep up with my son's progress, we do a little login on a website and and view exactly what they went over in a day. And if he had to take a little pretest, I'm able to go in there and view exactly what the score was. Even though I asked my son what they did that day and he'd tell me, I'd still check the following day to make sure that that was exactly what they were learning.
The website gives me all the information that I'm looking for and I don't have to go in and check in with the tutor exactly to make sure he's on the right track. They leave messages if need be and if they want him to work on anything extra, I'm able to just go in and read what's what. It's a one-on-one type of learning with Sylvan which is what my son needs and if he still needs to stay with them, I'm willing to keep him in.

He's not as frustrated with it because he knows he has the extra help on Saturdays. They were also supposed to help get him on age level with as far as his math skills go all together, but he's still a little bit behind there, but fundamentally, certain things that used to be like, “Wait a minute. I don't know how to do this” has gotten better.
My son likes going to Sylvan. He did ask me if he could only work on the stuff that pertains to school right now, and I told him, “No, it's for this and for you to get better on previous math skills." The whole reason that I wanted him to do it is so that he won't have this struggle like he did at the beginning of the year in Algebra. As far as Sylvan, I’d recommend it, I like their analysis where they can see where he is. I really like how when he did his assessment and they were seeing how he did and could tell how he did. So, I'm curious about that.

My son has been pretty disenfranchised with school since he was young. We were told that there was no learning disability, it was just a lack of interest. He'd fallen behind in his academics, so we had him in speech, reading and other courses at school. We even held him back a year when he was younger. When we got a progress report from the school, they said that some of his other stuff was higher but he was reading at an early third grade level. That got me to look at Sylvan and we bought 50 hours to start out with.
He's only done 30 hours so far and his confidence, reading ability, and understanding, has improved. They went back to the beginning and are teaching him everything from scratch. And he seems to be absorbing it like a sponge now. He's already progressed up into fourth grade by their assessment. They're assessing often, seeing where the week has been, and they've been giving us reports and updates. So that's more than what we got from the school district in seven years. It was so much better for him than that small class environment. At Sylvan, there's never more than three people at a table and they asked the right questions. Also, he learns better by men, so they put him with male tutors.
I speak to the administrators at Sylvan plus we do a lot of emails and texts. But the times that we speak in person, they've been great, upfront, and accommodating. Also, even if you're not asking for information they're pumping it out to you so you know what's going on. So that's amazing. Other than that, we're a low budget family and the cost was hard on us. They did explain to me that most of their staff is either retired or active teachers, and most of them were middle age.
When I took a tour of the place, I was like, "Yeah, this is the place for me." It's just that with the younger crowd of tutoring, they tend to be more focused on their lives and not really the focus of the younger children's lives. My child is doing Reading and it's been going well. They go over several different areas. And when I meet with them to talk about her assessment, they lay out the areas that they focus on like vocabulary and comprehension. Then they go into detail about what specifically they do for each one.
I can start to see some improvement with my child in how she's reading and building up her confidence level. Her enthusiasm towards learning has not changed. She doesn't like doing tutoring, but they enjoy her because she's very cooperative. She does everything they ask. So, they have no issues out of her. I just wish the pricing was a little bit cheaper, but I like that they offer sales. I was able to jump on the sale at the right time and take advantage of that. That's a very good plus for someone who's very conscientious of budget.

We live in Ohio and Ohio offered an ACE scholarship. It's for afterschool programs and enrichment after COVID to get children tutoring, music lessons -- things they had missed while they were doing online school. Sylvan was one of the providers and we chose to use our scholarship for that. My child has done about 25 hours of tutoring and he's mastered 20 lessons. He's doing great and he likes the learning experience. He looks forward to it every week and he has a tutor that he really likes. He does it online so he can sit up in his room and he doesn't complain about it. When our scholarship runs out, we plan on continuing the program and paying for it ourselves because it is a good and valuable program.

We were really apprehensive about Sylvan but a friend of mine had a large credit and they allowed her to transfer it to me. I was able to afford to have my 8th grader evaluated. He was reading like a kindergarten level or below, which I knew and I was telling the school, but the school was like, "Oh, he's fine. Just keep pushing him forward." Sylvan was very honest and they were very delicate about the way they delivered the information.
I brought him for three hours once a week for a year and they caught him all the way up and some. Now, he's in 9th grade and he still scores in the 11th grade range for reading. I like those results. It was very expensive but I'll pay that all day because I just don't have that teaching aspect in me. They fill in the holes. They figured out what exactly is making him not be able to read and as soon as they were able to get that part caught up, it clicked and he was reading and doing great. Also, it really helped his self esteem. I have another son in it right now too, my 2nd grade, and he loves it. He gets more points and prizes.
One suggestion, in order to make themselves available to lower income people, is they need to look into selling. Sometimes they'll do a reduced rate, like $5 less an hour if you buy a package, and they need to put together some smaller packages maybe for $1,200. Asking people for $4,000 right up front is a lot and a lot of people just can't do that. Also, they should check into accepting insurance. A lot of insurance companies would pay for it or reimburse the parents.

I've been with Sylvan Learning for a long time now. We've seen three different directors when Tori first got tested. When she first got tested, she was doing the first and second grade level with reading and math. The first year, it was like sketchy towards me because I really didn't understand the grasp of all I'm paying this money. Then it was so hard for me to keep up with the rescheduling. So, I missed a lot of days. I backed off with them then, but then, we came back. Tori has been back for a year and a half now. Working with Miss Carol and Miss Courtney has been absolutely amazing. They adore Tori. Tori has confidence now. Sometimes, she still shuts down but as far as having the confidence that she has with doing work on some things by herself, it's amazing to see. I love the way that they try to make her be more independent with doing her work. So all around, I pay a lot of money every month but my money is well spent.
I texted Miss Courtney the other day and I let her know, "Hey, Tori got in the car. She said, ‘Mom, they had to slow me down. I was moving so fast. I was just zipping through everything.’” So, that makes me feel wonderful to see where my money is going every month and to see her blossom. Me and Miss Courtney are almost like best friends. I communicate with her when Tori doesn't feel good and let her know. She keeps me up on everything. We have monthly meetings. If she was involved in the IEP team meeting, she's very involved. I hope she doesn't go anywhere. The turnover rate is high with Sylvan Learning. I hope she sticks around because she is awesome. Tori gets a prize box. Sylvan lets the kids go in the prize box for their birthday. They get prizes for certain things after they get enough points. Sylvan is wonderful. I pay for the lessons at Sylvan Learning Centers. They're lovely people that genuinely care about the kids. They are very hands-on, concerned about the kids, work with their individual needs. My granddaughter goes there and she makes nice progress. Her parents are thrilled with her progress. Sylvan has a structured program, but they went outside of it for her. And I'm sure for any of the other kids that had lapses and gaps in learning during the pandemic when everything was shut down.
What Syluvan did for my granddaugter was incredible. She left in the middle of kindergarten, went back and they threw her in the middle of second grade, which is where she would have been if she had been in school. But she was not anywhere near being a second grader in terms of Reading or Math. She was a kindergartener, maybe a mid-first grader. And Sylvan, in the few months that she has been there, took her up to grade level. She's in fourth grade now, going into fifth grade next year.
She was failing everything in school. They dumbed down the requirements because the kids were so far behind, that she is now getting 80s and better in Math and Science and are still struggling in English for whatever reason. But we're not being too fussy about that because she's doing well and they're working on it. They've made a lot of progress with her. They've taught her now Phonics, which she didn't know. She can do just about anything. And Sylvan has been the reason behind it.
Sylvan's encouragement is hysterical. They went in one day and had donuts for the kids for, "Here, we're gonna sit down, but you're gonna have donuts when we're done." Everybody was happy and had donuts. Kid was thrilled. And in terms of price, I found them to be reasonable. They have one teacher for two or three children. And it's good. It's a small group environment. They charge $49 an hour, which you cannot get a tutor for that anywhere in this country. That was phenomenal. We are very pleased with Sylvan's program.

I've seen growth in my child since starting with Sylvan. He now reads, which he didn't do with either of the other two programs he did. He is a little bit more careful about what he's doing and he's getting better at using correct spelling. The learning environment is good. They had to make accommodations once he had some testing done and found he had an auditory processing disorder. They were able to make those accommodations, putting him in a separate room versus the large room that had multiple people. Because he does not filter out background noises. So he needed a more quiet environment for learning.
Sometimes, the ability to have one-on-one help isn't there because they have a lot of people that are coming through, which seems to still work with the kids. But sometimes, there are areas that need a little more one-on-one, which would be good versus three, four, or even five kids with a teacher or a tutor. I am very pleased with Sylvan. Whenever I've called to schedule an appointment, even if 90% of the time, it’s last minute, they've always 90% of the time were able to fit me in. I've had a wonderful experience with them. I'm very happy we did it. The math tutor, John, has been an excellent fit for my daughter. Sylvan's reputation precedes them. If my daughter was not happy there, I would have pulled her. She's been going there since ninth grade. She's worked with the same tutor since then, and it has been a great experience. She's a senior now. She's always been an avid learner, but Sylvan has helped transition her in her math subjects. I would highly recommend Sylvan.

I like Sylvan. I used to take my kid to Kumon, but I didn't like the way they teach there. Sylvan is one-to-one. This way, the kids will learn more quicker than giving homework, and not enforcing. If they don't know how to do the homework, they cannot do the homework. I don't like that kind of learning pattern. I like the Sylvan system because they sit down with the kids. I see that as advantage for my kids. One of my children takes math and reading. The second one just started and she's only writing for now because her reading level is very good. Their tutors help them. I like them. The only thing is Sylvan is a little bit expensive comparing to other schools. Other than that, the teaching system is very helpful.

It's really convenient that Sylvan Learning is a close and well-recommended service that I was able to go with. At first, I was there for my SAT prep and they helped knowing my timing for it, being able to read through the passages properly and being able to understand problems in the math section. Then I had some extra hours, so I went to homework help and they helped me with my calculus. For calculus, they helped me to understand all the tricks and tips to getting the correct answers and all the trigonometry behind it. It was mostly college level classes and they were able to help me tremendously.

I love Sylvan Learning and my daughter loves it too. They've improved her significantly. She's a different kid, even with her behavior. She has ADHD, and she's calmer. Before Sylvan, in regular public school, she wasn't interested in learning. But with Sylvan, she's ready. They're amazing people. They always keep me updated. We communicate through their reminder app. They always call me or we have meetings about her progress and how she's doing, or if she's misbehaving. If anybody's kid is having difficulties in any area with their education, Sylvan Learning is the way to go. The cost is reasonable and it's money back guarantee. By me being on a fixed income, I can afford it.

We looked at a couple different tutoring options and they were all pretty reputable but it seemed that it was a little bit easier with Sylvan because they do online too. My daughter has been enrolled for almost three years now and she's almost caught up to her grade. They've come a long way with her and she's come a long way with them. She does a lot more and focuses a lot more in school and my son who's starting out in school does too. Sylvan is a good way to catch your kids up in school. Their financing services are not as good, though, because they use a third party.

We've been extraordinarily happy with Sylvan. My daughter was feeling less confident about mathematics so I've been having Sylvan work more with that with her. My son is struggling with physical writing and also organizing and composing his thoughts so I've had them working with him with reading. They have done a wonderful job working with him. I wish they did more physical writing with him but their program doesn't focus as much on that. But over time, we've built stronger relationships. We feel almost a devotion to Sylvan now. They've become a part of our growing up landscape. The kids rely on their social connections there as much as their learning support. Their confidence has been bolstered by the small group learning setting, specialized focus, and also the incentives that they offer.
Sylvan is very helpful at motivating my kids and feeling like school is a priority and fun too. They never balk at going. In fact, they enjoy going to sessions. They earn points when they excel in something or complete something or they've done extra work. They get excited about earning these points. They're motivated to do outside extra work that supports their general foundational knowledge. They think about all the things they wanna get when they get there. They're learning and incentivized to learn more because of the outcome that they get.
I'm very pleased that Sylvan has been flexible with us when we've had to arrange breaks because of vacations. The communication is very reasonable. I have a warm feeling of being supported. We were gonna stop Sylvan because of financial issues but our children asked us to not stop Sylvan. My daughter said she feels stronger and she can ask questions that she can't ask in school. My son feels connected to the people there. He's got some issues with communication and there’s a lot of negative feedback at school sometimes. Sylvan gives him a more positive feedback. They're able to help him calm down and to focus and complete things. That also helps him to be grounded in his knowledge base and confidence.
I'm grateful that I have this resource because my time is very limited. It's super helpful to have folks who are trained to teach my kids in a way that they can receive the information in a very efficient manner. It covers gaps that have been missed from the COVID era. Having them scanning for things that have been missed so that they still have a good foundation is nice.

We use Sylvan for Math for two children and they’ve brought their grades up from C to B. We appreciate them. They are a little pricier than just a tutor outside but it's okay. My great-nieces love Sylvan and their teacher helping them through problem-solving and making them feel important and listened to. One of them said that her teacher told her in school that he would explain and she should listen. We have a definite problem, which is the reason I put them in Sylvan.
There are not enough options though at that particular Sylvan. There is only a Tuesday and a Thursday for Math and it’s not open on Fridays. Both girls are very sports-oriented and schools don’t do games on Wednesday due to Church and Sylvan is not meeting their schedules. Our school system has practice every day. But we could get them into the later classes if Sylvan had been available on Monday or Friday. Right now, it falls outside of my great-niece's schedule, which she will change. Her sports will change so maybe she can go back and continue. One of them still needs five hours to catch up on what she missed. She's in college classes and advanced classes. Sylvan said she missed some very valuable core lessons so that put her behind in Geometry. But we just can't make it up.

We've used Sylvan for my grandson for quite a few years now and we've had a good experience. He only goes once a week now but he was going at one point for three days a week for a couple of hours a night. The only thing that I'm seeing that would be a little bit negative is the change in employees. But I've got businesses and I know what it's like because it's everywhere right now. It seems like nobody wants to work. But other than that, we've been happy with Sylvan. It's been good for him and I would recommend it.
Sylvan focused on English and Math in the past but right now, he's not focused on either one of those. He does not have the time to try to get ahead. He likes Lynn, the one that he works with right now in Tiffin, Ohio. They seem to mesh well. He’s at the level he should be. But we haven't done a lot of testing here recently because he's going to a public school and just getting help on homework. It's been an adjustment and a different school too. He's in a church school. He was homeschooled for two years so it’s been a difficult thing. He's in eighth grade and the older they get, the harder it is for them to teach themselves. When we were trying to get him caught back up as far as when he got behind, you could see continuous progress so he was more up to grade level. He was down quite a bit and I had that feeling he was. He was telling me he was struggling. But for an eighth grader, he is tuned in to everything.
My grandson goes from 5:00 to 7:00 at night to Sylvan and by the time I get him back home anywhere between 7:30 and a quarter till 8:00, that's getting late and sometimes, he still has homework to finish when he gets home. That's been a little bit of a complaint with his dad. My grandson works a little slower and sometimes he's gotta wait for the teacher because there's another student in there. When he was doing Math and trying to catch up, I saw a lot of good and it was more worth it. But we cut back to one day. I can’t take him that many days. It's just too much. It's been a discussion. It's not terrible drive time but if they have a lot of homework, he should be just sitting there and working on it.
I usually pick him up at 4 o'clock from his house because I take him to get something to eat before he goes. And then I make sure he's there by 5:00. So, there's an hour. And by the time I get him home, it's another 45 minutes. But he likes Sylvan and he would like to go. So, I just bite the bullet and do it. But I didn't buy any more tutoring. I've got a lot of money in what I have done though and when this runs out, I'll have to probably see what happens next, when he starts in the fall.
We go to a satellite office in Tiffin, which is small, and they’ve had changes recently. I had dealt with a couple of women who were in there consistently since he was going and they both left at the same time. But customer service-wise, I haven’t had trouble. For the most part, it's been very good dealing with people. It's not perfect but we're not in a perfect world these days.
My grandson had a few tutors who weren't up to snuff but it's going good again. So, for the most part, he's had ones that he was happy with. He's had a few that just did not help him. They didn't have the knowledge. I probably should have called and said something, but it was during that time when things had just changed and I was trying to wait it out and see if it would even out and get better. I shouldn't probably do that, but I did, not with the price you pay for it. If you get in on that fall or winter, Sylvan has a sale. It's much better if you buy a package and get that discount. But if you just come in and buy it at any time, it's pricey.

Recently, we got reconnected with Sylvan for the benefit of my daughter. She's in 5th grade. Presently, we're using it for math, but we have used it for reading. Sylvan is providing a resource to students who have been affected by the shutdown from COVID. So, it's a Herculean effort because these students were taken out of a productive learning environment at a time when their learning and momentum towards their own academic growth was stunted by the shutdown. So, I see growth and development, and Sylvan is doing a terrific job. Sylvan's charge is large, but the supplemental support they're providing students is wonderful. It's necessary.
I'm very upset that the state decided to do the shutdown. It's something that made us try to rethink whether or not we want our kids in public education, which is sad because my husband and I are both products of public education, but they have gravely let our children down.
