I initially signed up with Classmates.com to help organize a class reunion. I paid a reduced fee for a one-year membership. At no time was I informed that I would be automatically renewed without my knowledge or permission. I received no renewal information or notification. This fee was charged to my Visa on July 14th, 2014. The only reason I realized I had been charged is because I was checking the status of a refund from another company. I am not happy and I gather from reading other emails other people have experienced the same problem. I was told initially that I would have to renew if I wanted to when the membership was up. I didn't and I wouldn't because I do not need the service anymore.

I joined this site around 2002 when it was something else entirely. In those days, it was very interesting and it was easy to get information about schools and classmates. Over the years, it has changed into something else entirely. I mostly got e-mails claiming that somebody had remembered me and I was being urged to buy copies of my high school yearbooks. I never upgraded my membership so I didn't have problems with my credit card or having my membership renewed without my knowledge like I've read that other people have had.
The things I did notice was how the photos I posted no longer had captions or other people's comments like they did before and the picture that was now being used was obtained from my Facebook page. My graduation portrait that I had posted was gone. The last straw for me came when I started seeing pictures being posted from my Facebook that were not intended to be public. I had set them so they could be viewed only by people who are friends with me. I canceled my membership.

Today I found a charge for $39 on my account from Classmates.com. When I contacted them, they said I was automatically re-subscribed each year unless I told them differently. As everyone else seems to say in these complaints, they are sneakily, if not fraudulently taking money from people on the premise that people will not bother to read the fine print online. Stay away from Classmates.com. I will never do business with them again.

Ok, so I called my bank on June 30, 2014 expecting a deposit of a certain amount...lo and behold...the amount was incorrect..short by $45....hmmm. So, I called the bank and asked what the heck is this... They proceeded to tell me I had a $15 taken by Classmates and as I had insufficient funds when they took it... It cost me another $30! Needless to say, I blew by top...went immediately to the bank and filed fraud charges... Good luck to me.
Upon speaking with my bank...as nothing had been refunded...I called Classmates..... Actually, I called twice... I had found out not only did they take the $15 in June...but they had taken in March of 2014 as well... By this time I was seeing red. Like I told the representative David... "How is it that you are charging $15 every 3 months... Isn't it that for only a year subscription (which I did not, did not sign up for...signed up for a trial period of 3 months...or so I thought)?" He proceeds to tell me that the year is $19... I said, "Now David...why would I agree to $15 every 3 months when the cost is $19 per year... Does this make any sense to you?" I asked if... "as you say, David...where was the fine print... How small was it...and was it in Sanskrit?" I am more than angry and want to know why there isn't a lawsuit?

I have found Classmates.com to be less than honest. Sometime back I briefly joined for a flat fee, and unbeknownst to me I was placed on automatic renewal. I went in and cancelled and the automatic renewal and thought nothing more of it. I looked at my credit card bill and I was being charged $15.00 every three months for a site I have not accessed in many months. I called Customer Service and a chirpy customer service lady said "Oh, we show you have been a member since 2010" which is when I ever so briefly joined. Classmates.com agreed to cancel my membership (hopefully for real this time), but I have to wonder how many others are placed on "automatic renewal" and not cancelled when asked.

If anyone is an attorney on this forum, please respond to my issue if you have expertise in this area. I noticed on my Yahoo page, Classmates.com purports to help you find your yearbook from high school. I attempted to do this just to see what I would find. Well, they do have access to my yearbook and everything in it supposedly. Can they legally display this book if it actually belongs and was published by my high school? I would love to know if anyone has any ideas regarding this. I feel this belongs to my school and they have to get permission to publish or display this book. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

I have noticed over the past couple of years that when I get an email from Classmates.com, it is from people who were not in my class or the best I can tell ever in my high school. There were only 200 or so members in my graduating class and I know them all by name. I keep getting alleged profile views from "classmates" who I have never heard of. Seems odd as my profile has nothing of interest to non-class members. So why do these people keep visiting my profile and I keep getting emails to join to reveal who they are. Because of previous lawsuits, Classmates.com reveals the first one on the list, but not others trying to entice you pay them money to see the other people (I was a paid member at one time).
It would make sense for Classmates to pay people to create fake profiles and then visit unknown people's profiles. Gives them more shots at contacting the Classmates.com user and getting them to pay to see who is visiting. I was curious if other people are experiencing this and if so maybe a remedy could be sought.

Subscribed last year for ONE year so I could help set up HS reunion. Made sure at the time it was only for one year, then this year they hit my card with another charge for another year. I went back into my account and had to request my password be reset, that took a few tries, and they had placed it in the renew. I changed it again and made sure my credit card info was removed. The odd thing about the password problem is there shouldn't have been a problem. I reset it to exactly the same one I had. I personally think they caused that problem to stop me from fixing the account.
I contacted them by email on the 12th, 13th, and today (even twitted) and they are refusing to return my money stating I was sent an email 30 days ago regarding the renewal. I was not emailed unless they used an email that is different from their normal one... I have had companies do that before and the email goes straight to junk mail. I contacted my bank and they can do nothing about it in pending status but told me to have charges reversed as fraud as soon as it comes out of pending. The more complaints banks get the better because CM will start hitting the "bad list" and their charges will be questioned by banks and credit cards.

I've also tried repeatedly for years to remove the AUTO renewal to the membership on my account. I only wanted the account for the years we had high school reunions. I was told it had been done and would find my account debited yet again... I finally, just this year, found where the auto renewal could be turned off under my account online, which I had to go thru the reset to even get into. And then was VERY RUDELY told it was non-refundable even though I found it and nicely requested a refund within days of the charge.... No way to treat customers and no way to do business! The BBB gives them an A+ (well almost everybody gets an A+ rating) as long as they pay the BBB their dues. I comp[lied with all requests concerning the 'billing preferences' which, by the way is bogus and veiled at best. I wrote to request a refund but was advised that I am chained to this albatross for yet another year, because I agreed to it in the initial transaction. I had a similar experience with Classmates. My credit card was charged for their services although I had opted out of the renewal. I called the company number listed on my credit card billing two days after I was charged and was told there were no refunds. I disputed the charge with the credit card company and after two months, the credit card company said the charge was legal and refused to issue a credit. After some complaining to Citicard, they issued me a refund and ate the charges. I immediately cancelled my account and sent Citi my credit cards cut in half. They lost a customer. Two or three times a week, although I'm not subscribed to Classmates and will never be again, I get an E-mail saying someone is looking for me, visited my profile or notices of other activities. Classmates is a rip off and supported by credit card companies that allow them to scam you.

Long ago I had put some of my information into the website - not subscribing to anything, just provided my name and high school plus year graduated. A few months ago I started receiving messages from Classmates trying to entice me to join for a trial period - I received messages like "Someone described you as 'pretty', click here to find out who". Of course that led back to: You must sign up for 3 months to gain full access. Meanwhile I was getting other messages stating "Fourteen people looked at your profile, click here to find out who they are." - again leading back to joining for 3 months.
I cannot speak for others but in my situation it was all smoke and mirrors. Within 3-5 minutes of signing up for the 3-month NON-auto renewal package I learned there was no one out there describing me as anything and to my knowledge 14 people were not looking for me. In fact, when I entered my high school friends' names in I found none of them had stored any information on this conniving website. And so, within the first few minutes I began looking for a phone number to contact Classmates, to let them know I wished to cancel. No phone number was easily found.
I then went thru the customer service site stating I wished to cancel right away as their site was of no use to me. I received no response. Being a person who does not like to leave unfinished business hanging I searched and researched finally coming up with phone number. I called the number, listened to a man's voice recording and then left my message asking to have a return phone call confirming the message was received and stating I did not want their services. My call was never returned - Meanwhile (that first day) I contacted my credit card company alerting them to the charge pending that I wished to dispute. I was assured there was no reason to worry and this would be taken care of but nothing could be done yet because the charge had not gone thru. I was told to call if I was billed.
I received my bill and yes the charge was on it. I immediately called opened a dispute. And then in an effort to once again try and do the right thing, I emailed Classmates again (by now it was email number 3 or 4), let them know I was indeed filing a dispute claim and informed them I did not want their services. That email went ignored. I sent yet another not too long ago and this one came back informing me I had the ability to change the settings on the account myself and that I WAS signed up for AUTO RENEWAL - which I had made certain I was not when I initially gave my info. I went into the account and basically removed any and everything it would allow me to do. I sent them another email letting them know I had corrected the settings and that I NEVER authorized auto renew - again reminding them that I had attempted to cancel on the very first day, within 3-5 minutes after giving my credit card number.
I again told them I did not appreciate the fake notifications and the baiting they were using to lure in new customers - I knew no one on the site and respectfully asked that my email be escalated to a supervisor if a regular CSR could not take care of things. That was a day or so ago - this morning I received yet another "canned" response from CLASSMATES stating I had agreed to some terms, etc. I did write them back one more time this morning explaining yet again - and openly stating I did not appreciate the baiting and false information being generated sending people such as myself that 14 people had been looking for me etc. It was all false information. When I pulled up my profile that very first dreadful day I saw no one saying nice things about me or viewing my profile, etc. My letter states I believe they are committing fraud and unfair business practices. I again reminded them I was disputing the amount charged - all of it. I cannot believe I fell for this one...

Classmates.com - needs a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST THEM for their bad faith procedural methods. It must be owned by a bunch of liberals because they have zero ethics in doing business with clients. That always happens because liberals can't make money the right way. This is according to my experience. They kept charging me after I requested cancellation TWICE because of some ridiculous hurdles - when they could have just looked on their records and got the information they needed. I could not provide it because I was defrauded but they didn't care, they would be damned if they were going to give me a refund for the 6 months they overcharged me when they should not have because they say I "agreed" to these ridiculous policies when I signed on.
I am sorry but I should be able to put a request for CANCELLATION and REFUND in WRITING and have it honored. ALL business I have EVER conducted has been IN WRITING to save and cover my **. They told me that in order to cancel I had to CALL them. They told me this 3 months AFTER I sent in my written notice of cancellation which they did not honor. They said I needed to give them the credit card number I used in order to cancel but I didn't know which one it was because I have been DEFRAUDED and had my cards REPLACED 2x over the past year or so. So I didn't remember which card I used and it was not showing it on the account page (it was starred ** out).
What a shame you cannot conduct business in writing and expect it to be acknowledged and handled properly according to good faith values. CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT is definitely called for here because it appears I am not the only one who has had bad experiences with the way they conduct business!

I sent in disputes with my bank to stop the currently pending charge, a request to block them (CHKCARDCLASSMATES), and of course to Classmates - class action.. Yes, sounds good.

Classmates.com: I just happened to look at my credit card statement yesterday and noticed that you have renewed my subscription on May 31, 2013. I was not aware that you were automatically renewing it, and that you have been charging me $39.00 per year for the last 10 years for this account. I want it STOPPED; I want my credit card reimbursed for this latest charge. Your practice is a sham, and basically, you are stealing money from people. I was never given notice that the charge was automatic. Any other account that uses one of my credit cards has to call me to update the expiration date; your company does it without checking with the customer, which we both know is how you just keep charging without asking first. Your methods of doing business are deceitful.

We called (and wrote a letter) and they promised to refund the charge and cancel the recurring authorization. Guess what? They started again on the 3rd month and never issued a refund or credit! As of yesterday, this process has happened again for the 5th time. No charge for 2 months after calling/writing and then it started over again and I never received any refund/credit/apology letter. When I called and asked to return this money, they chuckled and said that that would be impossible because I had authorized them to take my money. They sent me a statement in bold letters indicating that I had read this agreement and agreed to pay. When I looked at the Terms of Service, this statement was close to the bottom of a huge document in very small print. Kind of reminds me of the IRS tax code manual. I am soliciting PayPal to let their customers know when they have had Revolving Pay attached to their account. As soon as my Visa invoice came in, I tried to cancel, but they advised that my automatic renewal button was activated (which is the default setting). I have since changed it to non-automatic, but that won't kick in until 2014. So, they've got me for $39 and I can't see how I can get the money back. And then, you get to see the email. You reply and offer your personal email address to an old friend, and when they reply to your personal email address - within minutes - Classmates.com deletes the email that was received to your personal email address. To add insult to injury, there is no way to contact this organization to make a complaint or to unsubscribe or to cancel your membership when you are unsatisfied with their services.
I am a lawyer & I do not accept this type of consumer fraud - but I am left in the dark (so far, but trust me, I will find a way to change that) - most people will just be left with their accounts being continually sucked dry by Classmates.com.
Short of cancelling credit cards or debit cards - people have no recourse - there is no phone number, no cancellation option, nothing to get out of their money grab and, on top of it, they delete personal emails that were delivered via people who have connected on their site and voluntarily exchanged personal email addresses! I searched my Evernote and found my membership information from 2011. I searched my emails and found I had used Classmates.com for a short time but gave up, because I found it confusing and not worth the time. I also have the Welcome email from Classmates.com that said nothing about automatic renewals in two years! The odd thing is the credit card I used back in 2011 was stolen when someone stole my wallet in May 2012. How in the world did Classmates.com get my new credit card?! I went to their website and my new card was listed under my account.
What in the world? How did they get that? I have emailed Classmates.com and they responded saying I had requested automatic renewal and they would not give me a refund. This was a false statement. I did no such thing. I never do that. I am going to fight this $59 unauthorized charge through my bank. Stay away from Classmates.com! I also asked them to cancel my membership. (Of course, I followed their instructions to turn off automatic renewal which I never turned on and I removed my two credit cards from their database; one was the original card. Since stolen, the other was my new card. How did they get that!?) They didn't cancel my membership. I asked but they didn't cancel it. It's the worst. I'm surprised there has not been a class action lawsuit. I signed up for a 3-month trial membership for $15 in January. Unfortunately I used a credit card I rarely checked in detail and in reviewing my year-end statement, I found they have been automatically renewing it every 3 months for the past year. I have now paid $60 for the "trial" (I do not subscribe to anything that automatically renews for that very reason). I contacted Customer Service and they absolutely refused to do anything, mostly sending auto generated form letters in response. Finally, a "Level II" CSR did admit that they could not provide me with documentation for what I supposedly agreed to, but stuck to their no refund policy.
I even offered to let them convert the $60 I have currently paid to their advertised $59 2-year membership (if I have to take a loss, why not, as I admit I should look at my statements more often so I am at least somewhat responsible for not seeking a remedy at the first "renewal"). Again, it was no. This is, at best, the worst customer service I have ever experienced. At best, and more probably, it's fraud.

Classmates.com kept asking me to update to Gold subscription in order to view who's looking for me. Beginning November 2009, I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to cancel subscription. Website is useless. It sends you in circles or to broken/nonexistent links. Telephone numbers either wrong, have recording saying only open such and such hours (never when I'm calling) or most frequent message is "Due to call volumes, there's a delay in answering" blah blah blah.
Classmates.com has billed me for yearly subscription in both 2010 and 2011. I was lucky enough to have my MasterCard company dispute charges in my favor as unauthorized. I continue to receive all manner of emails from Classmates.com leading me to believe they still have not cancelled my account. Several weeks ago, I filed a complaint with BBB in WA State (Classmate.com lists their headquarters in WA) asking to cancel account and have all personal info about me (schools attended, etc) removed from their website and scrub/destroy my billing info. I asked for written confirmation signed by a human at Classmates.com that they scrubbed all my info, not some computer-generated claptrap. I am waiting for an intelligent response. Thus far, all I've gotten via BBB is Classmates.com saying they can find no record of my name, email, billing, etc. even though I received email from Classmates.com as recently as December 1, 2012.
I strongly suggest everyone with similar complaints to seek redress via BBB. I also found the following info on the web: United Online Inc. Needless to say, I will not be doing any online business with these entities. Website: www.UNTD.com (website is interesting reading), address: 21301 Burbank Blvd., Woodland Hills CA 91367, main phone: 818-287-3000. Only individual with a name, email and phone number I could find is PR Contract Scott **, VP Corporate Communications, 1-818-287-3388, email: pr@untd.com.
On the main site, www.UNTD.com, top right side is a box Contact. Click on Contact Form and it appears you can send them an email direct. I have not tried calling or emailing so I cannot vouch for what is accurate or working but it's a place to start. My personal opinion based on my miserable/unsuccessful dealings is Classmates/MemoryLane is nothing but a scam, data mining names, addresses, email addresses, age, high school, credit card info/bank account info and who knows what else. I will not click on any of their websites, even to try to cancel subscription as I believe any online contact triggers them to say I was using their services. If this division of United Online Inc. has these terrible business practices, there's no good reason to not be suspicious of their other holding. Make your own conclusions. They claim that they have "state of the art" equipment. **, I could scan it on my portable and print it better than that - if I wanted to scan a used book. Most people would only want a membership in Classmates.com or Memory Lane (or whatever they call themselves) once every 5 or 10 years, i.e., when they have a reunion. I am so angry I could scream. Classmates/Memory Lane just charged my checking account $39 for a membership I cancelled over 2 years ago and will not refund the fee. It's fraudulent and it's theft and most importantly, I will not have gas to get to work next week because of it. From the looks of all of the negative comments with the same complaint online, I am one of many many people who have the same exact complaint. I guess that means they are getting away with it and have been for some time. Makes me think I should become an online thief and commit "legal" fraud, then, I could stay home, online, and wouldn't need any gas. That's what happened and its consequences, unlike the owners of Classmates who don't have to worry about having enough gas to get to work. Thanks for letting me vent. I sure wish someone would tell them this is not okay. Damn, I am fuming hot!

I have since wanted to cancel because it is about to expire and I do not want anymore to do with this unscrupulous company. I have tried to the best of my ability to contact this company, to no avail. I am 82 years old and I consider this elder abuse to the 9th degree. I don't have the time to play their game regarding cancellation. I have searched my Visa bills and cannot find a record of this, although I had to get a new card around X'mas but I subscribed approx. in April. I am very concerned about this and know they were in a barrel of trouble in the past. Please help. I do not remember any password, etc. Years ago, I had Classmates, so I don't know what to do. Thank you for listening to this plight. P.S. I only had 2 or 3 real friends in high school anyway and none are going to the July reunion.

The charge is $15, so I didn't make a big deal out of it until I received the third charge and this time I knew for a fact that I have double checked that I did what I was supposed to do the last time I was charged. This time I called and the person that helped me (Peggy) was rude and claimed that they had no record of me canceling my account. This company is the biggest rip off of all time. Just because the charge is so small, I have to wonder how many people do what I did and just accept the charge and cancel once again. Then, they are in to the billing by $45 or more before they finally call and ask for help!

I just checked my bank account and found a charge of $39 from Memory Lane, aka Classmates.com. Fortunately, there was a phone number (206-301-5900) provided by my bank and I called to cancel. Initially, I was told I could cancel next year, when my membership was up in 6/2013. I wasn't too happy and said I wanted it cancelled now, I don't use the service and I want the charge of $39 reversed. Again, I was told no. I asked to speak to a supervisor, was put on hold for a minute or two when the rep came back on the line, told me that no supervisor was available and she would make a one-time exception and cancel my membership but it would be prorated.
Bottom line, I will receive a credit of about $38 on my bank statement within 30 days. I did get a confirmation number and believe me, I will be watching for the credit. I am so sick of these hidden automatic yearly charges for things that are supposed to be "free" to sign up. Guess I'll have to do a much better job reading 3-page "contracts" for anything that is supposed to be free.

On June 17, 2012, I checked my bank account and found an unauthorized charge from Memory Lane (aka Classmates). My account was charged $39. Now, I've been unemployed for almost 3 years. I was just approved for permanent disability with payment starting in mid-July. Needless to say, my checking and savings has long since dried up. It's only by the grace of God and my wonderful children that I am staying afloat. This $39 caused an overdraft fee of $35. Yep, I was out $74 from this fraudulent company. Not to mention the anger and frustration. ML/Classmates does not provide CS phone contact numbers, but did provide a customer service email. Of course, they never respond.
Upon reporting and filing a fraud claim with my bank, the bank rep found a phone number for Memory Lane. When the CSR tried to contact them, it turned out to be a bad number. Did I hear scam! I'm pretty sure this happened after I received a typical email from Classmates (not Memory Lane) that new high school classmates had signed up. I very rarely go to this site since becoming a "free" member when it first came out back in the 90s. Being curious, I clicked on the link to check out the new members and it takes you to their new site. At first, it looks like the same old Classmates. Very deceiving. Pages are in tabs and when you click on a link on the classmates tab, it takes you over to the Memory Lane tab. Well, I left the website without looking around. Then, I find this charge which they put through the same day I visited the site and I'm thinking, "How did they get my debit card info!"
I can tell you, I will never use my card information online ever again. It's getting too easy for hackers, thieves and frauds. Oh and I don't think you can really cancel your membership. All you can do is send a cancel my membership email to their invisible customer care team (I really don't think they have one). I will never visit this site again! Ever!

I called my credit card company, and they arranged a three-way call with a representative of Classmates-Memory Lane. The rep acknowledged that I had not been a subscriber since 2005, had no record of the charge, said she could not help, and hung up on me and my credit card company. Classmates.com has been siphoning $15.00 every 3 months from my account without my knowledge and or consent for the past 6 or so years. I had canceled my subscription to the tune of nearly $300.00 or so. They offered me back $60.00 of my hard earned money that they scammed me out of.
