This company appears to have become a national rip-off. I too was a recent victim of their automatic $39.00 renewal and was unable to get any satisfaction whatsoever.

I enrolled in a basic membership for $9.99 for a year and specifically checked to not auto renew. I got charged $39 today for a gold membership that I did not sign up for. I guess I was auto upgraded and that comes with auto renewal. I cannot get a live person, on eternal hold due to large call volume, I wonder why! I emailed customer service and go the standard response. I emailed back wanting refund as I did not authorize it and also called my bank and canceled my debit card due to fraud. I was not a budgeted amount and they almost overdrew my account. Now I have to wait 5 days for a new debit card.

You can add me to the growing list of Classmates.com victims. On October 26th, 2009, I signed up for a gold membership for $9.95. I saw that it auto renewed in the fine print (very fine print), and immediately changed the automatic renewal to manual. Then I deleted my credit card information on file. The Visa debit card that I used is tied to my PNC checking account. It expired on 5/30/10. Yesterday, I got slammed for $39.00 on my new debit card that expires on 5/30/13. I never gave Classmates my new expiration date. The 16-digit card number remained the same, only the expiration date changed. Classmates changed my renewal settings from manual back to automatic, then somehow billed to the new card without even knowing what the new expiration was. How did they manage that?
I've been unable to find any contact phone numbers on their website to call them directly to request a refund. I am not happy. So, now I have to find time to take out of my schedule to go down to the bank to set the wheels in motion. I could file the dispute online, but then I would have to wait for the forms in the mail, then mail it back, which would add at least 7-14 days to the turn-around time. So, now I am contacting PNC Bank to dispute the charge. I have to wait for the $39 to post since it's still in a pending phase. PNC said I would also have to cancel my current debit card, and have a new one issued to me. So, I will be without a card for 5-7 business days. I can't believe this is legal. I've found thousands of complaints at Consumer Affairs and other sites detailing exactly the same thing I am current dealing with.

I found out that I was billed $39.00 for an annual subscription, which I never agreed to. On September 22, 2009, I paid $9.95 for a limited time access to Classmates.com. I never agreed to a $39 charge for an annual subscription, nor did I ever find those terms explained on their web site.
I believe that Classmates.com illegally charged me $39.00 on my credit card and would like to recover that amount from them. I am on fixed income and budget my money carefully. I believe I was scammed and want action taken to recover my loss.

I was deleted from CM because I disagreed with Doug *** of Lakeview, MI, High School class of 1974 from Lakeview, MI. I merely responded on a post from him and he flew off the handle and left 10+ messages on my bulletin board. I responded back and yes, used a few foul words but nothing like the brutal abuse he put me through. I reported him to CM member services and I am the on that got deleted.
According to member services, someone made a 'threat' to Doug using my membership. I have no idea who made this comment. I am upset because he bullied me and publicly abused me and he is allowed to stay. That is not fair. I have complained over and over and CM service is not helping me. They seemed one-sided, Doug's side. This is really not fair I got deleted and he did not.

I would like to cancel my membership and receive a refund for the charge of $59 billed to my Capital One credit card on 9/27/10. This renewal membership was done automatically with no notice to me, and it was automatically renewed for two years. I spoke to your representative by phone today and was told that the renewal membership fee is non-refundable. I was also told because I signed up for a two year membership in 2008, that this renewal is for two years. In addition to the above, the credit card you had on file for me in 2008 would have expired in January 2010. Evidently, you or someone else updated my expiration date on that credit card without my knowledge.
I seldom use the classmates.com web site and had no idea I was set up for automatic renewal. Again, I asked that you cancel my membership and refund the fee. I just received my credit card bill today, which was my first notice of the charge that was made. I do not feel I should have to pay for a service for the next two years that I wish to cancel and will not use. They basically responded that fees are non-refundable and advised to go online and change my renewal section to "MANUAL" for the future. (2012 renewal?).

When I noticed a $39.00 charge taken out of my account by direct withdrawal. I noticed it was Classmates.com. I sent them an e-mail stating that I only signed up for the one year program and that I did check the box to not renew automatically.
I got a e-mail response that stated I was a gold member and that it was automatically renewed. I specifically remember checking the box because I do not like automatic withdrawals because it is not an account I always have funds in. I returned the e-mail and stated what I just told use and got a second one stating that I was a gold member and my subscription is through 2011 now, so I should just basically use their service until then because no refunds are given.
This is bull. I do not want the service I may have gotten on the sight a handful of times and nothing had changed so I really never used it the only reason I did the 1 year was because my 30 year reunion was coming up and everyone decided to use Facebook instead so it was of no use to me to have.
If anyone knows what I can do to justify them stealing my money, please let me know. I am already in a class action suit against them that I received a few months ago for the last time I used them when my class reunion was coming up then.

I called and spoke with Susan. Susan was decidedly unsympathetic to my concerns. I told her I had only signed up for a 3-month trial. I was charged another $15 which I did not authorize. I asked her to remove the charge. She refused. I told her I would contact everyone in the company until this got credited back to my account. She avoided my concerns, did not listen to what I had to say, or comment on it. It was like talking to a dead fish. She only promised that my billing was now changed to "manual" from "automatic."
Unsatisfied with this interaction and lack of empathy, I called back and got Chris **. He said he was an analyst with the company and that he would redirect me to Laurie, the team lead. I asked Laurie if she was aware of all of the complaints on the consumeraffairs.com website. She defiantly protected her position and company by saying that all of the folks on this site know better and that no charge to anyone is an unauthorized charge. She insisted that the company is upfront about the charges at the time of purchase by the account holder. I beg to differ.
Ladies and Gentleman, then why all of the posts in the month of October 2010 alone? Does this strike you as odd? I asked her then how did I get signed up for something that I did not authorize. She asked me to try to sign up again for this service and said I would see the automatic billing in the fine print this time. No thank you, Laurie! Don't you think that if many folks have the same problem, it is a problem of a lack of disclosure by the company at the time of signing up?This was a complete nightmare, but Laurie promised I would get a credit on my account immediately. We'll see. Run from this company fast! ! I also called Erik in investor relations and his voice mail now states the following, "If this call is related to an issue with Classmates.com, please hang up and dial ###. This was a surprise withdrawal I was not expecting nor was an e-mail sent to inform me that the amount was being taken from my checking account. I asked for a supervisor and was not given one. So much for customer service! How does one get a refund from these jokers?

Then they prey on our human curiosity, sending emails claiming that others have been trying to get in touch with you. But, to find out who, you must pay for Gold Membership. They make it attractive, by only charging a nominal fee, something like $9.95. Now, a year later, I just noticed an unauthorized charge on my credit card for $39.95 for an additional year.
Yes, everyone's supposed to read the fine print, but who does, and has it come to the point that we have to suspect a scam such as this with every transaction? Further, I'm almost positive that I changed from automatic renewal to manual renewal when I first signed-up. Decades ago, I remember hearing about a push for "Truth in advertising". Things have gotten much worse! I feel very cheated. I had nearly $40 taken from me, when I never would have agreed to paying that much. Classmates is a terrible website, and few people actually use it to keep in touch.

A year ago, I "joined" "Military Friends.com" as I had been in the Air Force back in 55/56. It was a one year free trial. Well, after the loss of my son, and four heart attacks later, I never gave Military a second thought, except going to the VA for my medical. Then, yesterday evening I was checking my back account and there was this $39 charge from Classmates.com.
After researching Classmates, I found that Military was connected to Classmates.com. Since my bank has 24-hour phone help line, and I'm a poor, defenseless old woman. I explained the situation to the Customer Service representative. He told me to call today to talk to some one that would have the perfect solution and not to worry. Back at the ranch (so to speak), I started searching and found your great website and then this morning, sent email to Erick **, Vice President Investor Relations, but his recording gave me 205-301-5700 for Classmates. No one there as they don't work on Saturday and Sunday and no option to leave any message.
Also tried to email Classmates.com but email came back as no longer "valid". Talked to my bank this morning and because Classmates was using my debit card, and the new and unexpected charge of $39 was in "pending" and wouldn't be dealt with until Monday. My bank booted the $39 charge out and returned the money to my account (at no cost to me) and have changed my debit card number so that on Monday, when Classmates sees they were kicked out and they try to collect again, they'll find out the card number they tried to use no longer exists.
End game/Checkmate! The email address: ** is invalid and has returned to my email account along with Classmates.com. Direct line to United (Classmates boss) is 1-818-287-3350 but all you get is the message to call Classmates - gives you their number and then phone hangs up on their end. Not a bad day for an old broad after all. If you have a Regions bank in your area, I suggest you switch banks and go with them. They'll throw themselves under a bus for their clients. Good luck to all of you 'cause I know how you fee.

They do not tell you upfront that this service will be automatically renewed for the higher rate of $39.95 each year. There is no visible contact number on their site causing me to resort to email. The automatic email response did not cancel my subscription as directed but instead sent convoluted instructions on how to uncheck the automatic renewal. When I called Classmates to complain, the CSR said that their system did not allow refunds (what business system would ever not have that?) and eventually she offered me an 'exchange' to give me back the $59.99 and then charge me the special that's going on now of $30. So I said, "Isn't that a refund?" to which she reiterated, "No, it's an exchange." And then I said, "Sure, give me that but I'm still calling your supervisor tomorrow." Then she replied, "Well then I'm not giving you the exchange."
So it was tit for tat. That night, I got on the Better Business Bureau website to complain. I told them my situation and cited not only this website to show that mine was not an isolated incident but also a site telling about a settlement over misleading emails that classmates sent out (http://***). I then called back the next day, Oct.14, and asked right off to speak to a supervisor and the CSR went into my file first and said the supervisor was busy and would call back. I explained what the other CSR did the previous day. I then took a page out of Joe of Fortville, IN and Patricia of New Fairfield, CT 's books stating I would take this to small claims and I had found the numbers of higher ups and would call them. She said she'd have the supervisor call me. I said I'd wait. She said, "We don't have a hold feature." (Once again, what type of business doesn't allow holding or transferring of calls.) Finally, since I had to go to work, I asked when they open, 8am PST. So I asked that the supervisor call at that time.
Two things happened when I came home from work. The supervisor had call me at 1pm their time stating I would get the full refund with no more charges authorized. Then I checked my emails an hour later to find that the BBB had reviewed my case and forwarded it to Classmates. So ultimately, I don't know which method actually got the results but I finally got the refund, just have to wait for it to show up on my credit card.

At the end of last week, after my bank took it in the shorts for an unauthorized charge, I wrote Classmates again and requested they remove my account and information from their database/server. I explained that I was not asking for a refund as my bank had already 'eaten' the charge. I received a reply from a Michelle. It was a 'bot' type response stating about the terms I'd agreed to for auto renewal, blah, blah, blah. But please explore all Classmates has to offer and enjoy your Gold membership!
I wrote Michelle back and said, "I don't think you've read my email." I told her again that I was not asking for a refund that we'd been over that and we should move on now to what I am requesting, which was to have my account/information deleted from their database. At this point, I asked her if she was a 'bot'. So, the next day I get a message from one Sylvester who says they've 'taken an exception in my case' and have deleted my account and refunded me in the amount of $37.19. I have yet to see it show up in my bank account but I suspect it will.
Just be persistent, and being somewhat cheeky doesn't hurt. In my first reply to Michelle, I mentioned the guy with the blog who had to post unacceptable photographs to get his account deleted and asked her, "Is this what it's all come to?"
Now, being a good doobie, I will pay my bank back the $39 they ate in the process, leaving me in the hole to them for $1.81. Aside from the aggravation and headache, I won!

For the month of Aug., I did not receive any contact at all from them. I guess they wanted to lay low so I would forget about them till they attacked. This past Monday, 9/13/10, I received a notice that I was "automatically renewed", as per the agreement I made w/ them, for $39.00. This was taken out of my debit account, without my permission. They tried to bill me on 09/05 not once, not twice, but three. Count them three times in a 10-minute span. Since my debit card is the prepay type, the funds were not there. Each time they tried to bill me, I was charged a $3 decline fee from the debit card company for $9 total. I guess they thought money would magically appear on the second and third tries. This happened again on 09/16, another three times in a 10-minute span for another $9.
I finally got through and spoke with Tracy. I said I did not authorize the charge, did not want the membership and wanted a refund of the full amount. She told me there wasn't anything she could do because my account was on automatic. I told her it wasn't when I signed up, I made it manual so I would not be charged and they had changed it to automatic. I then asked to speak to her supervisor. She then told me she would put the charge back to the $9.95 for another year and refund the difference. After talking to this fencepost for another 5 minutes, I reluctantly agreed. Something was better than nothing. Then I asked for an $18 refund in fees I was charged by my card company each time they tried to re-bill and were declined. She said they were not responsible for the fees charged by my CCC.
Again, I asked to speak to her supervisor. She put me on hold and came back within 3 minutes and said the $39 would be refunded within 15 minutes. I asked again about the $18 and again, she said they were not responsible for the fees. I said they were responsible. Though I had given him no info, he knew my name. He told me he would cancel my membership but could not refund the fraudulent charge. I have never logged on to this site but the charge was against a charge card that was opened this May.
Personally, I have only been scammed out of about $50, so far. I expect to be charged again. I would cancel my credit card but that doesn't seem to work. I only subscribed because it was $9.95 for a year which has proved to be a big waste of time and I never would have given permission to renew automatically! Who in their right mind would ever do that?

Last year, I was charged $39.00 for renewal. When I complained, they said to change renewal to manual, which I did, immediately. They charged again this year and when I complained, they proceeded with "change to manual" renewal, which I had done the previous year! This is a blatant and fraudulent business practice!

I changed my credit card info for automatic renewal and the old card was charged anyway. I did not receive a notice, but my ex-husband (owner of the card) notified me. I asked that they credit his card and charge mine, they would not. So I cancelled the membership, but I can't remove the profile myself.
The loss of money is trivial. The embarrassment and dealing with my ex-husband is not. If the data is not secure and it seems from other complaints it's not then what's the purpose? The company cannot institute global policies that damage their customers.

I got hit for a $39 non-authorized membership charge on 9/3. I went up to their site, logged into my account and was horrified to find that all my privacy and payment settings had been changed from the last time I was up there! They changed everything back to maximum privacy for personal info, and back to "manual" for renewal from "automatic-credit card deduction" where it was!
Looks like someone up there has hit the "reset" toggle on everyone's account from all the complaints! I called during their normal hours, and got a recording saying I was not calling during their normal hours! What? I am going to dispute this!

They get you in for $9.98 and then hit your account for $39.00 every year after. You can't cancel your membership when you want to; they make you keep it for another year while keeping your money. I see they are doing this over and over. I don't feel that anyone should be required to keep a membership they don't want. I asked in writing to cancel and refund my money. They refused and are charging for another year.

On Sept 7th, 2010, I noticed a $39.00 charge on my bank account from classmates.com. I purchased the classmates.com last for $9.95 on a trial basis for 1 year. I never asked to purchase it for another year. Tried to call classmates but you get a phone message telling you to use the website. After exploring the contents of the website, I see that they automatically charge your account for another year and it's not refundable. This was done without my consent and it is a shame that this classmates.com is so dishonest. I hope that one day legal action will close this website down.

Classmates.com auto-drafted a fee of $39.00 out of my account without my authorization. When I contacted them, they said that my account had an auto-draft authorization on it, but I was never made aware of the option and it was a default setting not a selected setting. When contacting Classmates.com, I was denied a request by me to get a reimbursement of the $39 fee. My checking account was debited the $39 and almost caused an overdraft.

I did not want to continue with them. However they have my money and say I can't have it back. This is because they say I told them to take out next time auto. This is a sucker deal, get $9.95 and hope you don't say anything and hit it again next year for $39.00.
I know I told them this but they have the control or better yet my money. This is why people get fed up with everyone and it’s just a few like them that make it bad for all. It’s just $39.00 dollars but if you hear on the phone they have over 40 million, give me a break, just wonder how many thousands get screw by them and just roll over and do nothing. The physical damage is simple. They play on people that are usually just trying to get along in life. For $39.00 I realize you won't help me, but please take note and see the pattern. I saw a pending charge on my checking account for $39.00 from Classmates.com. I did not authorize this charge - I have no idea how they got my checking account information. I called Classmates and spoke to Rebecca (after being on hold 15 minutes). She refused to credit my account and said this charge is an annual renewable charge of which I was not aware.
I then called my bank and they refused to delete the pending charge and said after it posts to call them back. They did not sound hopeful. I thought if they removed it while it was pending, it would take care of the problem. I am on a fixed income and cannot afford the $39.00 charge. I advised Rebecca to cancel my membership immediately and advised her I was contacting you and the Attorney General of Oregon. Is there any way I can get this charge removed and have them destroy my banking information they seem to have?

Approximately one year ago, I subscribed to Classmates and paid the fee via debit card. Today I noticed a pending charge to debit card of $39.00. I did not authorize this transaction. I took the last $60.00 to my name and deposited it in my checking account. Checking online to see if the amount had been posted to account, I noticed the available balance was $21.00, not $60.00! This was due to a pending charge of $39.00 from Classmates.com. If I would have known that was on there, I would not have made the deposit. I have spoken to the bank. Unfortunately, they are unable to do anything at this time. The man at the bank gave me a phone number to call (Classmates), but it is a recorded message. I am also unable to locate an address. If you could suggest a way to rectify this matter, please contact me. Thank you.

Classmates attempted to charge my credit card for $39 for an unauthorized renewal. Fortunately, my Visa card fraud department denied the charges but permanently froze my card number and it is irrevocable. I must now wait 10-14 business days for a new card and then notify all vendors I deal with on a regular basis of the new number. Add to that the inconvenience of being without a valid card for purchases of anything on line or at local stores. It is a terrible inconvenience for me as a primary caregiver for a neighbor. These people must be stopped and victims reimbursed for the hassles imposed on them.
