I was charged a yearly membership fee automatically on June 28, 2018 which I did not know I had approved of, anyway the day I was charged, I wrote to them immediately and received this reply, "Hi Jamie, Thanks for your message. We're sorry to hear that you wish to cancel. To discontinue your paid membership after the current term, follow the steps below: At the top right of any page, click the gear icon and select Account. Select Account & Billing and enter your password. Click Turn off automatic renewal. Click Yes to confirm your decision. By changing your renewal option to Manual, your account will not be charged again. You'll continue to receive paid benefits until your expiration date."
I responded, "Hello Peggy. Since I was just charged today can that not be reversed?" And I got this message back: "Hi Jamie, Thanks for your reply. I’ve confirmed your membership is no longer in automatic renewal and you will not be charged again. Your paid status will expire on 9/28/2018." This was in no way helpful and I contacted within 20 minutes of being charged. This is unacceptable.

I wish I read the reviews here before I found that awful site. I wanted to get my dad a copy of his high school yearbook. I ordered it through Amazon from Classmates. After reading and seeing the AWFUL quality, I was able to cancel my Amazon order. Here’s the kicker... I couldn’t find my grandma’s yearbook on amazon but I did find it one the classmates' site. My grandma passed away 6 years ago and I would have loved to have a copy of the yearbook! I placed my order and the site said that my card couldn’t be accepted. So I tried again. Same message. So I switched cards and used my credit card. Same message. Then all of a sudden I get a text message from my bank that my debit card was compromised.
I called my bank and they said the $59 dollar charge had been placed 4 times in a matter of seconds from Classmates. I entered my info once, then a second time when I was told it was rejected. Luckily my bank blocked the charges. I wasn’t so lucky with my credit card. I paid for the $59 1965 yearbook FOUR times with both cards and unfortunately the charges went through on my card. I will call to dispute ASAP. I feel extremely ripped off and upset that this company is even allowed to sell products. I have NEVER dealt with such a shady site and I’m seriously disgusted.

I thought I would find a certain classmate on this site that I have been looking for years. I had no success in finding her. It was my understanding that I would receive a notice when this subscription was up for renewal, but I did not receive it and had forgotten all about it. They dinged me for another 2 years at $72. It is a LOUSY site. I called customer service and the lady was very cold and very rude. If you give these people your credit card number, YOU WILL BE SORRY. I will leave it up to my credit card company now. BTW, if I could give them a NEGATIVE five stars, I certainly would. It hurts to even give them a one star.

When you try this service for the first time, they don't make it clear that they will auto-renew the subscription for TWO YEARS at the end of the first year. They claim to notify you in advance before renewing the subscription, but they send so much useless spam all the time that you won't recognize it as a renewal notice. Then they hit you with the charge for two full years in advance, using the old payment information from the prior year; and even if you protest that you never use the service, and even if you try to cancel THE SAME DAY the renewal period starts, they refuse to refund the advance subscription charge. This company is a bunch of professional CHEATERS who skate just inside the limits of legality.

number, totally different number and new security code. My original card was compromised and we had it replaced in 2017 because some charges showed up that were not ours.
I sent a e-mail to Classmates and they sent me a reply to go on their site and cancel subscription and they will let me use the site till the $72 subscription runs out. That is not acceptable since I received no notice of renewal (like what legitimate companies do). They make legitimate companies look bad, even magazines send you renewal forms. I will await a reply from them until I take further action. I do not know how they got my new credit card number. Do not give Classmates your credit card.

Classmates took an old account and switches it without my approval to auto renewal. I only found out by them sending a payment to PayPal they were requesting $ 48, which in return posted this online to me. I went and disputed with my PayPal account which I have not heard anything from. I also contacted Classmates and they say basically tough crap, they claim in the fine print that this is explained and cannot refund me anything. I switched my account to manual renewal again and deleted everything off their website. Credit card was going to dispute it, but found they charged me $24 last year I did not catch back then. Let's all contact the US States Attorneys and file a class action suit against them. In 2006 Time Inc. did this also. US states attorneys made them refund 4.1 million dollars of unfair renewals. I for one Am Filing a claim to the NY states attorney. Don't let them get away with this.

Buyer beware: Ordered a reprint of my 1981 yearbook. I wish I had read the complaints listed on ConsumerAffairs before I ordered. The reprint quality was so terrible. It looks like all they did was copy the original book with a cheap copy. I complained to them and asked for a refund. Of course they would give me one.

Very deceiving the way they explain the information on their website. They would not accept returns and I am stuck with the wrong yearbook. I see where they are under investigation for these same actions. The quality of the materials are of poor quality. They need to be prosecuted.

Apparently this has happened many times before.

I joined Classmates.com 2 years ago. I connected with 3 people, but now, with Facebook, it's an unnecessary membership. I did order a reprint of my HS yearbook, but it is very poor quality. My main problem is that I didn't realize that I was enrolled in an automatic renewal plan, so now, 2 years later, I am charged $72. They will not refund it, because it was supposedly in the membership agreement. They also said they sent an email reminder, but since I get daily junk mail from them, it got deleted or lost-- I never saw it. Just know what you're signing up for.

You will be continually billed every year or two without pre-notification. I was auto billed through PayPal yesterday. If it weren't for PayPal notifying me, I would never have known about the billing. Classmates, of course, sent out no notice. I went on Classmates and changed the AUTO BILLING to manual. I don't remember EVER choosing AUTO BILLING. I actually went on my PayPal account and deleted as many of the accounts and cards as it would allow me. When this is over I will definitely close my PayPal account so Classmates can't do it to me again next year. I never got anything out of the original membership. No past classmates contacted me and the whole thing is a sham. WASTE of your time and money to begin with.

I received a notice from Paypal that Classmates had charged $59.00 to my account on 12/26/2017. I was never contacted regarding a renewal and definitely not for $59.00. What a rip-off! I contacted classmates in writing and was told on the accounts page everything is stated and that by participating you automatically agree and that they had sent me a notice 30 days prior (never received). Pretty much saying there is nothing I could not and they were not reversing the charge. However, they went on to say that after this charge I would be a free member with no more charges. Yeah right... until the company is sold again or they make up new rules.

I belonged to Classmates.com with a paid membership for 2 years only around 2009 or 2010. More than a year after I canceled my paid membership, I saw that they had renewed my subscription via my Discover Card every January for the last few years, this falling after I had canceled my paid membership, sent them an email about this, then apparently forgot about the situation. A year later, I again noticed a renewal on my Discover bill. I contacted Discover, and they said they can only do something if I document calling Classmates and give them the date and name of the person I talked to asking for resolution of this matter. Then, they said, it would be a wait until the following January to see if this fraud continued before Discover could act against them. I called Classmates.com. They had been sold to another company. The new company did not have me as a paid member and denied billing me or receiving money from me.
So apparently it was the previous owner of Classmates who continued billing even though they were gone. Well, I wasn't going to wait for it to happen again a year later, and I really did not believe at this point that Discover had my best interest at heart. I felt unsupported by Discover. So I regretfully (it was my favorite credit card) called and canceled, fully explaining why their policy was my reason to cancel. I paid off the card balance in the following months, the account closed, and I have not heard from Classmates again, nor have they found a way to charge me in perpetuity. Don't even START with Classmates.com at any level -- paid or not. It's all a dead end and may cost you for nothing.

It all began when I received an email from PayPal that I was being charged 48.00 dollars by Classmates.com to which I immediately disputed. After also putting by bank on notice of the unauthorized transaction, I was informed that Classmates was saying that I signed on 9/21/2016 for a 12 month Classmates+ membership with registration ID: ** for an amount of 24.00 dollars that also renews automatically for an additional amount of 48.00 dollars, and is nonrefundable. I believe if I saw this on an invoice, I would have walked away. I believe anyone would.
I never had a paid membership with the Classmates website. Checking back to my 2016 Chase card statements I discovered that PayPal did charge me 24.00 dollars on behalf of Classmates. However, I was not aware of it at the time, and it must have gotten past my scrutiny undetected. If I had known, I would have disputed it immediately. How this could have occurred, is a mystery, for I certainly would not have made the purchase, and then never use it. I had received many emails from Classmates over the years pestering me to visit their website because some of my high school classmates wanted to connect with me. I may also have visited the website a few times out of curiosity, or to try and stop those pesky emails, but otherwise I had no interest in their services.
I believe all visitors to the Classmates website become free memberships upon online, and information is collected and stored in their database for future use. Therefore, I assume I was also in their database. I understand there are about 60 million free members, who visited the website, but only less than 5 percent are paid members. To my knowledge, I did not register or create a paid account with Classmates. In fact, this is the first time I have ever seen the Classmates member database. I certainly would not have registered my own name incorrectly; without the middle initial, and using a small "g," in the last name. Except for visits as a free member mentioned above, I had no known business transactions with Classmates.
The ID now being used for the renewal charges was created on 9/24/2008 ID: **; over 9 years ago. I have no reason to believe it was more than a free membership account one receives when first visiting their website, because a paid membership requires a registration, billing information, and is secured by a password account, and there is no such information shown in this database, or in my own records. I believe that Classmates used this ID old account data, and the information they acquired from free membership, to charge my PayPal account, and without my agreement and authorization.
I did not seek a paid membership subscription renewal with Classmates, or knowingly authorize Classmates to charge my PayPal account 48.00 dollars for a subscription renewal, automatic or otherwise. The implication that it was stated somewhere on the invoice, rings of deception, and scam. In addition, that I did not knowingly authorize or select the use of the automatic renewal program to charge my PayPal account for use with Classmates, means it was not likely to have been a key feature of the sale. I did not receive a receipt for an order to purchase a subscription, or a renewal of a subscription. I did not receive an email notification of the impending renewal charges, the increase in the charges, or the date such renewal would be effective. Therefore, it also follows that I did not agree to accept the terms of agreement as set forth for a paid member, and I conclude that the transaction was indeed unauthorized.
In my opinion, Classmates has not provided sufficient information to support their contesting of the claim. They did not provide the necessary copies of the receipts or invoices, copies of the email notifications that were sent, proof that I signed in with a password on a login window, or even an acceptance of the terms and provisions that would typically accompany and support such a purchase. No evidence means no proof. No proof that I authorized the renewal. The remainder of Classmates supporting documents are vague and insignificant. They contain various undated, incomplete, and obscure information; including hypothetical examples, that are mostly illegible, that I was unable to read or decipher, and that were nonspecific to my situation.
Further, I believe that Classmates was duly notified, within a reasonable amount of time, and a refund should have been honored. When my emails went out that the renewal charges, and the paid membership subscription renewal was not authorized, or wanted, and demand for the subscription be cancelled, and immediately refunded; I sensed a bit of concern. The reconsideration which followed included offering me a 60 percent reduction of the 48.00 dollar charges for the same 12 month renewal.
However, I refused. I do not want to continue business with Classmates. It is my opinion that a refund would be a fairer and simpler resolution for all concerned, and would incur minimal or no loss to Classmates. However, Classmates did not care that I was not satisfied with the product, did not want the product, and have no use for the product; all they seemed concerned with, was the money, that is, until they thought they might lose it all.
Does it make good business sense to force someone to pay for something that they do not want; whether it was the result of a mistake, a technical oversight or error, a change of plans, or that they no longer need it? The automatic renewal program should not be used as an entrapment, or a device to force someone to buy something they do not want. Instead, I'm sure it was intended as a convenience, to ensure ease of continuity and processing for both for the customer and the merchant; not as a means to lock in a sale, or hold a customer hostage until you get what you want. I hope we still favor good business ethics, over just making a good sale, and that this sort of aggressive salesmanship is deemed unlawful and discontinued.

My first awareness that my subscription to "Classmates" had been "renewed" was a notification that l had "authorized" payment for same via PayPal. This apparently falls under some small-print nonsense of which l was not aware. The subscription is automatically renewed, charged for first, and the unfortunate subscriber notified second. I emailed Classmates immediately upon receipt of their renewal notification, stating l was NOT interested in renewal, but was charged anyway.
In order to NOT renew requires the hapless subscriber to log in to Classmates, go to the account page and notify THEM. There was no reminder notice of pending subscription expiration, no option to renew or not renew, no updating of account status or the like. This is an unscrupulous site, sleazy and unsavory. Whether they are "legal" or not, they are ripping off their clients with an absence of information provided on a business-like and good-faith basis. This site should be investigated. Apparently Better Business Bureau is well aware of Classmates and has received countless other complaints.I will lodge one myself with BBB within the next 48 hours.

First... I never sign up for automatic renewals... Never. I was notified that my PayPal account had been charged three days ago with an automatic renewal for Classmates. I did not want to renew because I get messages from a person that I don't know now and have never known. I wanted to stop my subscription because of this but Classmates charged me anyway. I call them and the person told me there was nothing she could do except remove me from the subscription. Even though the payment was only 3 days old, she could not refund any of my money. Therefore, I paid three months price for a three days' subscription which I didn't order in the first place. Beware of this kind of scam. Be very careful. Now I must open another PayPal account to keep them from using my existing account again.

I found an unauthorized charge for 1 year by Classmates.com. I did not have auto-renewal turned on nor did I even have a credit card for them to charge. Somehow, they obtained a number for a Debit Card that I have never used online and submitted that. I am going to take this to the max that I can, reporting them to State and Federal authorities. When I told them about the unauthorized charge they offered to give me a discounted membership saying that is all they can do. They are ignoring the fact that what they did is the same thing Wells Fargo recently did and it is FRAUD. I recommend that nobody ever renew with Classmates and if you're not signed up with them that you never sign up.

Beware. Classmates.com renewed my subscription without authority from me through my Paypal account on July 25, 2017. After speaking with a Paypal representative, she told me that Paypal authorized Classmates to go INTO my checkbook (which was attached to my Paypal account ) and they withdraw $59.00 from my account, unbeknown to me. I contacted Classmates and they said that I had automatic renewal. This was a lie, as I checked my account on Classmates and it said "manual". Stay away from Classmates and check on Paypal.
I see FRAUD HERE. Consequently, Classmates is doing NOTHING about refunding my $59.00. However, I have canceled my PayPal account, went to my bank and have canceled my checking account attached to Paypal, and canceled my Paypal credit card. I have written to classmates and I will be canceling my subscription with them when this so called "automatic renewal is up and want all my information deleted on the site at that time. My first subscription to Classmates was back in 2001. Back then they did not have automatic renewals and they would ask you to renew when your year expired. I only paid for a subscription three times, the last one being in 2006 or 2007. After it expired I had no interest in renewing it as I no longer had a need for their site. I went about my life for about five years. Then a strange charge appeared on my credit card in 2012. It was from Memory Lane. I had no idea what that was so I looked it up on the Internet and learned that was the new name, at that time, of Classmates. They'd been purchased by Memory Lane and were even using that name for a while. I had never resubscribed, so I knew this charge was in error.
I found their agreement contract on their site and read that all "subscription renewals" were "non-refundable." I also saw that they had changed over to automatic renewals sometime after I'd completed my last subscription, five years before. I immediately contacted the credit card they charged and explained what they did. I had never authorized "automatic renews" with my previous subscription, five years before, and they had not been Memory Lane (with their new rules) back then, either.
When they changed over to Memory Lane they automatically renewed old subscriptions and were refusing to credit people their money back even though the renewals were unauthorized by the customers. My credit card promptly disputed it on my behalf and issued me a new card. I won the case! Now I see they are no longer calling themselves Memory Lane but Classmates again. They are shady and clever. I recommend no one have anything to do with them. What a scam they have going.

And my credit card was charged $48.00 for an entire year subscription. When I called to have my credit card credited I was told that I did not read the disclaimer stating that I was responsible for the cancellation or renewal was automatic. Again, I did not knowingly resubscribe in May 2017. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and my credit card. Just what Gold Membership.
Now I visit this site every so often and have been able to send and receive emails, everything inclusive. I have shown them emails from 2006 and 2007, both of which state "Been a gold star member since July 2000." Now I keep getting messages back from, the customer care team saying my membership expired. They have already emptied my email incoming, and I have some of the sent emails left. I sent them the email where it states that I am a Lifetime Gold Member.
This is the first time I have been back to this site, only to be told my membership has expired, I beg to differ, I was sending and receiving emails in 2006 nothing was said about fees. First they said they didn't have a record of me, as soon as I send them the email stating that I was a lifetime gold member (apparently still alive) then they said that they do see that I am a lifetime gold member, yet now I expired 10/31/2001. I hadn't signed in to the account for at least 3 years. My husband notified me today, that $39.00 was charged to our credit card and set up as a recurring monthly charge. I told him that I did not sign up for any of the paid services through Classmates. I got on their website and went to Account Information and it showed that there were no credit cards on record associated with my account. I went ahead and terminated my account with them and I think I will cancel my credit card as well. I don't know how they got my credit card information but I sure didn't authorize an organization I haven't even used for over three years to take money from my card.

First, THANKS for all of your reviews as I was going to renew a really old account today but these reviews stopped me. Was going to attempt setting up a reunion-type get together. After failing to find a few people on social media sites I thought maybe Classmates.com would be helpful. Despite having IT experience I was unable to figure out how to browse schools easily & realized you cannot add schools to search without adding yourself to the school. I don't get the clumsy layout.
Living in a huge city some students went to more than 1 high school & a group of 10 friends could potentially be in 10 different schools. So sounds like Classmates end game is for users to pay to put their own data in their database. How can you check multiple schools? The site is cumbersome & difficult to use. I mean who would use Classmates exclusively anyway - so why would a user pay to search when you can find a lot more info on google or Facebook? They would do much better if you could search easily & then get a paid account to actually contact them or view extra albums. But searching for just a name should be easier.

I returned the two erroneously order yearbooks to Classmates.com. A Classmates representative called and indicated that the yearbooks were printed upon demand and Classmates.com has a no return policy. I explained my wife's special circumstances; i.e., Parkinson's Disease and much to my surprise the Classmates.com representative (David employee number **) told me that Classmates would not accept my wife's erroneously ordered yearbooks, Parkinson's Disease notwithstanding. I asked David for his supervisor's name (Joanne) who I was told does not take customer complaints.
Any company that treats its customer with this level of arrogance and disregard should most certainly fail. The fact that David refused to even consider asking his supervisor for special relief in my wife's case tells more about this company than all of the advertising in the world. I called my bank, we cancelled the card and had a new one issued. Then again in May 2016 I was charged again with my NEW credit card number. Same thing. Classmates.com refused to cancel the membership I never signed up for and refused to refund my money. My bank once again cancelled my new card, reissued another new card and credited me back.
Now today, I was charge AGAIN. And again Classmates.com refused to cancel the membership and refund me. 1) I never signed up for this service. I explained over and over to them that I didn't do this. I had logged into the account in over a year because I thought I had successfully cancelled the account the previous year. They do not send renewal reminders, even though they claim they do. Fortunately, I only signed up for a free account to view my HS yearbook to see if I wanted to order a hard copy, and I did not and will not give this company any credit card or banking information. My expectation was that the process was for this company to purchase surplus yearbooks from the publishers, and distribute and/or copy those pristine volumes. Instead, as others have noted, I found that they have somehow obtained and copied the yearbook of a member of my high school graduating class, complete with signings and personal notes from friends. That would be bad enough, but in this case the yearbook they copied belonged to a friend of mine who died as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident returning to college from Christmas vacation her freshman year. I have no idea whether or not they came by that yearbook legitimately, and unfortunately, I don't have any legal foundation to pursue that question.
What I really cannot believe is that Classmates.com thinks it is good marketing to sell a product that would make most buyers so uncomfortable. After paying $100 for a yearbook reprint, I was surprised that the book that arrived was not my yearbook. It was instead the book for the June 1959 class and not the February 1959 class. Even though they have a "sales are final" policy on their yearbook reprints, I feel this is a special case for which they should refund the cost and accept the book's return. I told them that schools in Alameda, CA, including Encinal High, were inundated with children from WWII workers and service members in the 40s and 50s, and so had half-year classes so we had high and low classes all the way into high school - Low Seniors and High Seniors. Thus there were two graduating classes, one in February (with their own yearbook) and in June (with their own yearbook).
The half year classes were ended in 1957 or 1958, but the students still graduated in February. I should have caught it when I ordered my yearbook and they didn't specify February or June. I realize they had no idea, thinking June only. I think they should be magnanimous and refund the payment - or reprint the February book and send it to me.

I ordered my yearbook, which was described as scans of someone's actual yearbook, which is fine, given that I graduated almost 50 years ago. It arrived beautifully bound and looking very nice on the outside but when I opened it, the printing was so faint that I couldn't read most people's names or the narratives on some of the pages. 4 months ago I had purchased 3 month trial of Classmates.com. I found the lack of quality terrible. I stopped using it. Then I saw the $15 taken from my Paypal account. Called Paypal and explained I hadn't requested nor authorized any more time with Classmates. The woman reversed the charges. I called Classmates.com on a working day and a gentleman (Marcus) had stated they will not refund the $15. He did state that he went and turned off the automatic purchase and deleted my account (at my request because I am truly disgusted at their practice and deceitfulness). Marcus had told me that people are basically too lazy or just won't read the terms and that's the way it is. No refunds.
Well, Paypal has an excellent reputation and I am counting on them to stick with me on this. The lesson I learned from this and reading others experiences with classmate.com is: Call classmates at 425-917-5000, hit #1 and be prepared to be told it's the buyers fault. What really went on was the introductory fee sign up the default "terms of service" required an automatic charge in 3 months with NO advance notice. Even when you put to manual the system puts to automatic anyways though Classmates will never tell you that.
All of what I have read on here about Classmates is true. This is a standard practice for them. Imo, it is deceptive and sneaky and have found a way to make it appear that people knew they had automatic payments for as long as it takes for a person to figure out what really went on. Classmates makes a lot of money by taking what they can before long channels and measures have been taken to cancel this. I find it to be an unfair practice trade. My recourse is to document dates, times, emails and statements made to Paypal (who have been very courteous and helpful) and the chat I had w/ Classmates rep: Marcus. If it continues then contacting the official consumer affairs commissioner, the BBB and our CT attorney general will be next. Please send the word out to others about what your experience has been. It may save your friends a lot of grief, time & money!!! Had I known, I would of never gotten involved in this mess!!

I tried to change the password and it said it didn't have enough information to verify my identity. I'm thinking, wouldn't they send an automated email to reactivate the account?
So I tried the help topics page. It sent me an automated message basically saying I needed to reregister. Okaaaayyy... well, I did. With an email address I've never used on Classmates.com. All I want to do is reset my password so I can get my updates and put in current photos, and they treat me like it's someone else's profile.
And they don't even send the standard email verification letter! I don't get this. It's also worth mentioning that my school doesn't come up on the register line anymore. I don't know what they did to get my new debit card number but they did and my bank verified it. THEY CHARGED ME AGAIN.
Notice also there is no customer service number - very hard to find - I can't believe they haven't been hit with a lawsuit. My advise is do not do business with this company. Little benefits, very annoying badgering to spend more and they do not ever end your membership even if you take your debit card out of your account with them. When you sign up it automatically defaults to auto billing and you are given a choice to turn it off - don't trust this, it never turned off.

Updated on 07/21/2015: They actually did refund the money, all but three dollars. The problem is I'm hearing from them again and I am afraid I'm going to go through this again next year. I want it over with. I cancelled my account and I unsubscribed but that doesn't seem to help. I signed up for a 3 month paid membership with Classmates twice, once in 2010 and again in 2012. Both times I changed the billing to manual immediately afterwards, only wanted a short term commitment, and was not billed again... Until yesterday. I received an email from PayPal stating I had authorized a $15 USD payment to Classmates.com for a 3 month renewal. Renewal?! I haven't had a paid account for the last 3 years, and haven't logged onto it in over 2 years.
I immediately checked my account settings. I had paid directly with 2 different credit cards for those transactions, which were still listed as linked to my account (both are no longer valid). I had never linked or used my PayPal account with Classmates.com. PayPal uses a 3rd credit card, which had also never been used with that account. The auto-renewal option had been changed back to auto renewal. No idea how they got accessed my PayPal info, or how that setting was changed again.
So I immediately contacted both chat and email support for Classmates.com. Both replies were simply directions on how to change my settings to manual (again?!), and stated that all payments are non-refundable. Pointing out that I hadn't had a paid membership for the last 3 years didn't convince them that this was a bogus charge.
So I changed the setting back to manual, deleted both of the previous credit cards from the account, and closed my account. Then I contacted PayPal to dispute the payment. If there is a law suit against them, I'd be happy to add my name to the list of ripped off customers. I'm now living on a disability pension. This $15 charge will cause a direct debited bill to bounce, costing me a lot more in the long run. I'm still in shock that this kind of thing can happen. In my opinion, this is outright theft and fraud.

I called membership services, and fortunately had kept records of their instructions to me regarding cancellations, which I had done.
I asked them, with same name, address, and everything, why they had not notified me of a double account and just kept billing. I see others have posted about this problem. I signed up for the introductory fee and did not realize that the default "terms of service" required an automatic charge in 3 months with NO advance notice. "Buyer Beware" does apply and we all are responsible for clicking that "agree" button but seriously, don't insult my intelligence after this happens, I feel very "taken" by this process.
I have contacted them numerous times. I can even access the account page from their link to get to the correct place to cancel my service before the 3 month deadline so it is impossible to do what they require to keep from being "automatically" charged another $15.00. To me, they are utilizing a very fine line between good business practice and just poor choices of "you should have paid closer attention." So, this isn't the first time there has been problems. In 2011 there were also issues with Classmates and their policies. They settled even though they denied no wrongdoing???
Do the math, at 15.00 per automatic renewal for every 1000 people there will be $15,000.00 that will not be refunded due to a poor policy. So it is pretty much we lose and they say that it is our own fault. The States Attorney General will be hearing from me and a complaint will be filed. I gave them plenty of opportunity to rectify the problem. Everyone should also follow suit.

I have read many of the Complaints about Classmates.com on this site and wanted to share my experience so hopefully it helps someone else out in the future. I haven't used Classmates in a few years because it never lived up to what I expected and to get any of the good features you had to have a Paid Membership account.
My Story: I was looking at my online bank statement today, 11/3/2014, and realized I had a $59 claim from Classmates, Inc. Now I have always had a FREE membership account with Classmates.com, but I didn't remember ever having a Paid Membership. So I got real curious and started searching all over Classmates.com for some way to contact them to address this matter and unfortunately I could never find any contact info. While I was there I decided to read up on their Terms of Services and how to Stop Automatic Renewal. So I followed their steps (Clicked gear icon top right corner, Accounts, Password and Captcha, Accounts Information) exactly and there was no option to Cancel the Auto Renewals so I knew it was still listed as a FREE membership account. I was even more curious about that $59 now. So I searched Google for any Contact Info/Phone number and finally found it.
Classmates.comPhone Number: 206-301-5700 (Dial 1 for Membership/Billing)
Called the number and waited about 15 minutes before connecting with a gentleman named Tory. Told him what I was experiencing and he looked up my account. Come to find out not only did I have a FREE Membership account with them with my Gmail email account, but I also had a PAID Membership account through my very old Yahoo email account. So without knowing or catching this issue before now I have been charged $59 every year for 8 years (haven't used Yahoo account for about that long). Definitely wasn't pleased to hear that. Tory told me he couldn't do anything about any past billings (previous years). I expected that, but then he shocked me. My last billing of $59 was on October 9th, 2014 and he said he could credit me back what was left on the current membership balance which was $56 and change. So now I will be waiting on that credit to show back up on my credit card in the next few days. I am hoping it shows up as promised. He also went ahead and stopped all future billings and shutdown that account for me.
I have definitely lost good bit of money from this over the years, but this one is on me for never catching it in past bank statements and for never checking back on my Yahoo account for any outstanding/reoccurring billings. He also said that there is no way that they can Merge accounts so there was no way of letting me know about the billing(s) through my current Gmail account. If I hadn't caught it now this could have gone on for many more years. Online electronic payments are easy and common these days, but sometimes they can come back and bite you in the butt. I will learn from this experience.

I had a membership with Classmates.com years ago, so I still get newsletters inviting me back. I finally took them up on the offer after seeing that a few people were reviewing my profile. I clicked on the Upgrade link and purchased the 2-year term at a reduced rate of $29.90 US. What I came to find out later was that my name appeared twice and I was confused about that. When I received my confirmation email, I saw they had created a new account for me instead of upgrading my current one. I then wondered how anyone would be reviewing a profile that had not been created yet and it made me nervous. Once I realized their link had created a duplicate account I immediately filled out an online form to the Billing department saying I wanted a refund to put towards my original account.
The only reply I received was a form describing how to cancel a membership, which meant it would only cancel after the 2 years had passed. On an account that I don't need? I replied to the email stating they had duplicated my account in error and got no response. The next day I again made a complaint only to get the same auto-responder that said I could reply to if I had further issues. I quickly replied they had made an error and wanted a refund, and I was taking the issue to Mastercard. The response I got then was they stopped further billing after 8/25/2016 and reminded me of the Terms of Service that I had agreed to by submitting payment. I was livid, and replied with a demand for a refund stating a new account was not part of the deal. That was an hour ago and I just started searching the internet to see if others had been scammed by them, too. Then I found Consumer Affairs. The only number in the receipt is the new account # **.

I noticed on my Yahoo page, Classmates.com purports to help you find your yearbook from high school. I attempted to do this just to see what I would find. Well, they do have access to my yearbook and everything in it supposedly. Can they legally display this book if it actually belongs and was published by my high school? I would love to know if anyone has any ideas regarding this. I feel this belongs to my school and they have to get permission to publish or display this book. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

I have noticed over the past couple of years that when I get an email from Classmates.com, it is from people who were not in my class or the best I can tell ever in my high school. There were only 200 or so members in my graduating class and I know them all by name. I keep getting alleged profile views from "classmates" who I have never heard of. Seems odd as my profile has nothing of interest to non-class members. So why do these people keep visiting my profile and I keep getting emails to join to reveal who they are. Because of previous lawsuits, Classmates.com reveals the first one on the list, but not others trying to entice you pay them money to see the other people (I was a paid member at one time).
It would make sense for Classmates to pay people to create fake profiles and then visit unknown people's profiles. Gives them more shots at contacting the Classmates.com user and getting them to pay to see who is visiting. I was curious if other people are experiencing this and if so maybe a remedy could be sought.

Subscribed last year for ONE year so I could help set up HS reunion. Made sure at the time it was only for one year, then this year they hit my card with another charge for another year. I went back into my account and had to request my password be reset, that took a few tries, and they had placed it in the renew. I changed it again and made sure my credit card info was removed. The odd thing about the password problem is there shouldn't have been a problem. I reset it to exactly the same one I had. I personally think they caused that problem to stop me from fixing the account.
I contacted them by email on the 12th, 13th, and today (even twitted) and they are refusing to return my money stating I was sent an email 30 days ago regarding the renewal. I was not emailed unless they used an email that is different from their normal one... I have had companies do that before and the email goes straight to junk mail. I contacted my bank and they can do nothing about it in pending status but told me to have charges reversed as fraud as soon as it comes out of pending. The more complaints banks get the better because CM will start hitting the "bad list" and their charges will be questioned by banks and credit cards.

I disputed the charge with the credit card company and after two months, the credit card company said the charge was legal and refused to issue a credit. Long ago I had put some of my information into the website - not subscribing to anything, just provided my name and high school plus year graduated. A few months ago I started receiving messages from Classmates trying to entice me to join for a trial period - I received messages like "Someone described you as 'pretty', click here to find out who". Of course that led back to: You must sign up for 3 months to gain full access. Meanwhile I was getting other messages stating "Fourteen people looked at your profile, click here to find out who they are." - again leading back to joining for 3 months.
I cannot speak for others but in my situation it was all smoke and mirrors. Within 3-5 minutes of signing up for the 3-month NON-auto renewal package I learned there was no one out there describing me as anything and to my knowledge 14 people were not looking for me. In fact, when I entered my high school friends' names in I found none of them had stored any information on this conniving website. And so, within the first few minutes I began looking for a phone number to contact Classmates, to let them know I wished to cancel. No phone number was easily found.
I then went thru the customer service site stating I wished to cancel right away as their site was of no use to me. I received no response. Being a person who does not like to leave unfinished business hanging I searched and researched finally coming up with phone number. I called the number, listened to a man's voice recording and then left my message asking to have a return phone call confirming the message was received and stating I did not want their services. My call was never returned - Meanwhile (that first day) I contacted my credit card company alerting them to the charge pending that I wished to dispute. I was assured there was no reason to worry and this would be taken care of but nothing could be done yet because the charge had not gone thru. I was told to call if I was billed.
I received my bill and yes the charge was on it. I immediately called opened a dispute. And then in an effort to once again try and do the right thing, I emailed Classmates again (by now it was email number 3 or 4), let them know I was indeed filing a dispute claim and informed them I did not want their services. That email went ignored. I sent yet another not too long ago and this one came back informing me I had the ability to change the settings on the account myself and that I WAS signed up for AUTO RENEWAL - which I had made certain I was not when I initially gave my info. I went into the account and basically removed any and everything it would allow me to do. I sent them another email letting them know I had corrected the settings and that I NEVER authorized auto renew - again reminding them that I had attempted to cancel on the very first day, within 3-5 minutes after giving my credit card number.
I again told them I did not appreciate the fake notifications and the baiting they were using to lure in new customers - I knew no one on the site and respectfully asked that my email be escalated to a supervisor if a regular CSR could not take care of things. That was a day or so ago - this morning I received yet another "canned" response from CLASSMATES stating I had agreed to some terms, etc. I did write them back one more time this morning explaining yet again - and openly stating I did not appreciate the baiting and false information being generated sending people such as myself that 14 people had been looking for me etc. It was all false information. When I pulled up my profile that very first dreadful day I saw no one saying nice things about me or viewing my profile, etc. My letter states I believe they are committing fraud and unfair business practices. I again reminded them I was disputing the amount charged - all of it. I cannot believe I fell for this one...

This is according to my experience. They kept charging me after I requested cancellation TWICE because of some ridiculous hurdles - when they could have just looked on their records and got the information they needed. I could not provide it because I was defrauded but they didn't care, they would be damned if they were going to give me a refund for the 6 months they overcharged me when they should not have because they say I "agreed" to these ridiculous policies when I signed on.
I am sorry but I should be able to put a request for CANCELLATION and REFUND in WRITING and have it honored. ALL business I have EVER conducted has been IN WRITING to save and cover my **. They told me that in order to cancel I had to CALL them. They told me this 3 months AFTER I sent in my written notice of cancellation which they did not honor. They said I needed to give them the credit card number I used in order to cancel but I didn't know which one it was because I have been DEFRAUDED and had my cards REPLACED 2x over the past year or so. So I didn't remember which card I used and it was not showing it on the account page (it was starred ** out).

They have already had 1 class action suit for another fraud. It looks like they will get another one. There is no phone number for them to call and no number on the website of the parent company. If a class action is filed, I will certainly join.

Just like everyone else, I just got a charge from these guys. I called them and it's too late to reverse it even though it literally just went through. I am stuck with the charge and supposedly it will not happen again. $39 down the drain. This is simply wrong. This should not be automatic unless you opt in. This will be a class action suit for sure. These guys are simply wrong.

Like everyone else on this thread, I have been invoiced $39 for something I did not expect. The company is pointing to the terms and conditions of the membership agreement that I was supposed to read when I originally clicked on the "Submit Payment" button last year when I took their promo offer (which I did in order to read an email from a long lost classmate). As soon as my Visa invoice came in, I tried to cancel, but they advised that my automatic renewal button was activated (which is the default setting). I have since changed it to non-automatic, but that won't kick in until 2014. So, they've got me for $39 and I can't see how I can get the money back. I don't want to waste more time than $39 is worth to get it back. Very frustrating. Here's to hoping that a class action lawsuit is on the way.

They send you email alerts that someone has sent you an email, trying to reconnect with you. But then you cannot see that email unless you sign up and give your credit card and pay. And then, you get to see the email. You reply and offer your personal email address to an old friend, and when they reply to your personal email address - within minutes - Classmates.com deletes the email that was received to your personal email address. To add insult to injury, there is no way to contact this organization to make a complaint or to unsubscribe or to cancel your membership when you are unsatisfied with their services.
I am a lawyer & I do not accept this type of consumer fraud - but I am left in the dark (so far, but trust me, I will find a way to change that) - most people will just be left with their accounts being continually sucked dry by Classmates.com.
Short of cancelling credit cards or debit cards - people have no recourse - there is no phone number, no cancellation option, nothing to get out of their money grab and, on top of it, they delete personal emails that were delivered via people who have connected on their site and voluntarily exchanged personal email addresses! This is untenable, and totally deserving of a class action and more than that - a fraud investigation by the U.S. authorities. Please contact me as I can document and testify.

Just like the 2,056 people before me, I had $39 taken from my checking account yesterday from Classmates/Memory Lane. I tried to call them to no avail so I called my bank (USAA) and talked to their fraud division. I had to cancel my debit card and get a new one FedEx-ed to me. After seeing all the complaints lodged against these morons, it's amazing they are getting away with this. If it wasn't such a worthless website, I might not be as angry as I am. But it's annoying to get all their emails. It's impossible to move around the site. I'm furious.

It is impossible to get through to these people. I followed email instructions to turn off auto pay. I did not put auto pay. I never do that. They tell you to turn it off but some reviews say that does not do any good. I deleted my credit card. That should help. This is one big scam. This needs a class action lawsuit.

I went on Classmates Memory Lane last year for a trial period of 3 months. It was our 40th year out of high school. When there was no class reunion, I did not renew. Checking my bank statements, they (Memory Lane) took out $15.00 without my knowledge. I am in the process of contacting my bank to stop payment and putting a blocker on any more transactions. I contacted them only to find they are closed and to contact them through the internet. When I did that, it stated my account was closed. What the heck is going on? This is one screwed up company! It's high time they receive another lawsuit!

I chose manual renew when I signed up and notated that for my records. However, they renewed me automatically anyway. I attempted to call them numerous times but was on hold at least 15 minutes each time before I hung up. I then tried to contact them through their website on several consecutive days. All the links to anything that had to do with contacting them regarding billing directed me to a page, "Oops, we can't find the page you're looking for. Try one of the following:" There are 6 suggestions listed, but after trying all 6, I found myself back at the error page each time.
Tonight, I finally got through after 20 minutes. I explained how I had chosen manual renew and was told that that isn't an option, and there is a no refund policy. After speaking to the employee (to no avail) and asking to speak to a supervisor (there were none available to speak with me), it was evident that I would get nowhere. How I wish I had taken a screenshot of the page where I was given the option of choosing auto or manual payment (live and learn). I can't help but believe that something a bit shady is going on with this company and their billing practices. When you have issues like I had when trying to contact them, it's hard not to feel that they aren't on the up and up.

I joined Classmates.com in January 2011. I paid for a two-year membership at $30. On January 7th, 2013, I saw a $59 charge. I didn't even remember who or what was Classmates.com. I searched my Evernote and found my membership information from 2011. I searched my emails and found I had used Classmates.com for a short time but gave up, because I found it confusing and not worth the time. I also have the Welcome email from Classmates.com that said nothing about automatic renewals in two years! The odd thing is the credit card I used back in 2011 was stolen when someone stole my wallet in May 2012. How in the world did Classmates.com get my new credit card?! I went to their website and my new card was listed under my account.
What in the world? How did they get that? I have emailed Classmates.com and they responded saying I had requested automatic renewal and they would not give me a refund. This was a false statement. I did no such thing. I never do that. I am going to fight this $59 unauthorized charge through my bank. Stay away from Classmates.com! I also asked them to cancel my membership. (Of course, I followed their instructions to turn off automatic renewal which I never turned on and I removed my two credit cards from their database; one was the original card. Since stolen, the other was my new card. How did they get that!?) They didn't cancel my membership. I asked but they didn't cancel it. They said I could stay on as a free member with reduced access privileges. Memory Lane refuses to refund my money and they refuse to cancel membership (both paid and free). Shysters!

It's the worst. I'm surprised there has not been a class action lawsuit. I signed up for a 3-month trial membership for $15 in January. Unfortunately I used a credit card I rarely checked in detail and in reviewing my year-end statement, I found they have been automatically renewing it every 3 months for the past year. I have now paid $60 for the "trial" (I do not subscribe to anything that automatically renews for that very reason). I contacted Customer Service and they absolutely refused to do anything, mostly sending auto generated form letters in response. Finally, a "Level II" CSR did admit that they could not provide me with documentation for what I supposedly agreed to, but stuck to their no refund policy.
I even offered to let them convert the $60 I have currently paid to their advertised $59 2-year membership (if I have to take a loss, why not, as I admit I should look at my statements more often so I am at least somewhat responsible for not seeking a remedy at the first "renewal"). Again, it was no. This is, at best, the worst customer service I have ever experienced. At best, and more probably, it's fraud.

I joined only for 3-month trial in January 2006. I should have known better. I didn't really use for more than a few weeks as I couldn't find helpful info or any classmates. I have received untold numbers of emails stating something like "Someone looking for you" or "So and so left you message," etc., but could never find said message. Classmates.com kept asking me to update to Gold subscription in order to view who's looking for me. Beginning November 2009, I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to cancel subscription. Website is useless. It sends you in circles or to broken/nonexistent links. Telephone numbers either wrong, have recording saying only open such and such hours (never when I'm calling) or most frequent message is "Due to call volumes, there's a delay in answering" blah blah blah.
Classmates.com has billed me for yearly subscription in both 2010 and 2011. I was lucky enough to have my MasterCard company dispute charges in my favor as unauthorized. I continue to receive all manner of emails from Classmates.com leading me to believe they still have not cancelled my account. Several weeks ago, I filed a complaint with BBB in WA State (Classmate.com lists their headquarters in WA) asking to cancel account and have all personal info about me (schools attended, etc) removed from their website and scrub/destroy my billing info. I asked for written confirmation signed by a human at Classmates.com that they scrubbed all my info, not some computer-generated claptrap. I am waiting for an intelligent response. Thus far, all I've gotten via BBB is Classmates.com saying they can find no record of my name, email, billing, etc. even though I received email from Classmates.com as recently as December 1, 2012.
I strongly suggest everyone with similar complaints to seek redress via BBB. I also found the following info on the web: United Online Inc. (Nasdaq: UNTD) owns, among other things FTD, Interflora, Classmates/MemoryLane.com, MyPoints, Net Zero Wireless, Juno, MySite and StayFriends.com. Needless to say, I will not be doing any online business with these entities. Website: www.UNTD.com (website is interesting reading), address: 21301 Burbank Blvd., Woodland Hills CA 91367, main phone: 818-287-3000. According to FinanceYahoo.com, Chairman, President and CEO Mark R. Goldston, who as of Dec 31, 2011, earned $3.6M; President of MemoryLane Inc: Harold A. Zeitz, made $762K as of Dec 31, 2011. Only individual with a name, email and phone number I could find is PR Contract Scott **, VP Corporate Communications, 1-818-287-3388, email: pr@untd.com.
On the main site, www.UNTD.com, top right side is a box Contact. Click on Contact Form and it appears you can send them an email direct. I have not tried calling or emailing so I cannot vouch for what is accurate or working but it's a place to start. My personal opinion based on my miserable/unsuccessful dealings is Classmates/MemoryLane is nothing but a scam, data mining names, addresses, email addresses, age, high school, credit card info/bank account info and who knows what else. I will not click on any of their websites, even to try to cancel subscription as I believe any online contact triggers them to say I was using their services. If this division of United Online Inc. has these terrible business practices, there's no good reason to not be suspicious of their other holding. Make your own conclusions. I wish all of you good luck resolving your similar billing issues. If I'm successful via the Better Business Bureau route, I will post the outcome.

Non-refundable - They have misleading language "yearbook reprint" leading you to believe they are printing a reprint of an original yearbook. Instead, it is a crap xerox of a used one with scrawling of the previous owner, then printed with a green hue to it. They claim that they have "state of the art" equipment. **, I could scan it on my portable and print it better than that - if I wanted to scan a used book. They copied the cover of the yearbook and printed it in a small area on the front and back of a black hardback cover. Looking at a previous owner's personal letters and doodles on photos could have been removed if they had good equipment. This is just stupid and I am stuck paying $90 because it is non-refundable. $90 down the drain.
The language that it is non-refundable is greyed out at the bottom of a long scroll, so if you don't see it, too bad. Do not order any of their "reprints." Try talking to the supervisors and workers - they are taught how to be nasty. Realize, Classmates went out of business and is now owned by Memory Lane so they don't care if they suck or not. They are next to close, I guess.

Classmates.com renewed our membership without our notice! We were only interested in the site for our upcoming reunions in 2009 and 2010, but this crooked site charged us two years extra! We are now working with our credit union to get our money back. In addition to the $80.00 they owe us, we also needed to cancel and order a new debit card for me so they also owe us for a $7.00 card renewal fee. That's $87.00 those rotten cheats have scammed us for. Spread the word to your friends. I let my Facebook friends know today and asked them to check their bank accounts.

Just like all the other members of classmates.com (Memory Lane) who have been trying to cancel our memberships, I was not alerted that my membership was going to expire and that the fee would automatically be taken out again, etc. There is a solution to this problem. Your bank will let you file a non-payment to Classmates.com (Memory) for a minimal fee. My bank is charging me $30.00 to file the paperwork and now, when the auto-pay comes through the system, I have my paperwork stating I filed a non-payment to Classmates.com-Memory. One word of advice: make sure the paperwork includes both names, Classmates.com and Memory because they will try to take out the fee by using both names if not successful using one name. These people are scam artists. I have decided to file a complaint with the FBI.

The automatic renewal option is very deceptive and difficult to find when you register. Yes, it's there but it's not clear, obvious or honest. They clearly make their money doing automatic renewals, which is a scam in my opinion. Most people would only want a membership in Classmates.com or Memory Lane (or whatever they call themselves) once every 5 or 10 years, i.e., when they have a reunion. The honest and reputable thing to do would simply be to warn people that their renewal time is coming up, and ask if you'd like to renew your membership. And as many have said, their customer service is dismal. You've been warned!

Back when this was just Classmates.com, someone decided to use my email address to back their own classmates profile. I got all their comments emailed to me, etc. I emailed Classmates and told them what happened, and asked them to remove the fraud account. I didn't want my email associated with the type of person that this profile indicated this person was. Nothing. I emailed again, still nothing. I called, and was told that since it wasn't my account, there was nothing I could do. Fine, so I posted a comment to her profile asking how she liked stealing other people's emails and I detailed just how many I got and how annoying it was. I hope all the people at her reunion had fun with that.
Recently, I tried to log in to my Classmates to look up someone, and it wanted me to change my email. And it wasn't Classmates, it was Memory Lane. I tried to change it, and it said that the email was not allowed. I tried to email Customer Service and got an error. I'm not sure there is a Customer Service. I did an internet search, and there are no customer service emails out there. My email address did not have any weird characters in it, nothing weird. I wonder what they are hiding, but then again, I'm not that curious. There was some class action suit a while ago, wasn't there? I'm guessing that's why I'm blocked now.
