I enrolled over a year ago for a one-year contract at $9.95, I believe. Today, I checked my credit card statement and found out they had charged me $39.00 for "automatic renewal." I am 100 percent sure that I never chose that option especially for that much money. I have disputed it with my credit card company but don't have much faith in getting a refund because Classmates claim that I wanted the auto renewal. What a rip off and what a ** website. I don't see how they stay in business except that they do things like this.

My credit card was charged to auto-renew my Classmates.com "gold" membership that was under $10. However, it is now called an "all-access pass" and is approximately $40/year. I was not informed of the changes or the charge in advance, a courtesy that most legitimate companies extend prior to processing an auto renewal. In corresponding about my discontent, I was told about all the great features of Memory Lane and their inability to refund my renewal fee. I chose not to participate in the class action suit against Classmates.com, which would have allowed me to be reimbursed for my gold plan fees. I can see that they are not extending the same loyalty to me. So, I plan to pursue action against the company to the fullest extent of the law.

Around June 8th, I sent an email through their automated email system on their web page re:

"Over two months ago, I sent you an email through your Member Support Email Contact page to inform you that you had charged my credit card for a yearly fee and that you were also charging my debit card for a monthly fee. I received an auto response that you had received my email. Please be advised that since you have not contacted me regarding the overcharging you have committed I have cancelled my debit card to keep you from charging it every month. I will no longer be using your service, I have filed a complaint with the BBB and will tell everyone I know of the shady way you treat your customers. "

I received an auto reply back that they had received the email and would get back to me. I then cancelled my debit card and had a new one issued to prevent them from charging it. I received no further replies.

Now they have charged another "yearly" fee of $39 to my credit card this month! I did finally receive an email from Nathan (**) with a phone number to call which I will call tomorrow.

I contacted the number on my statement and advised of this and they did say they would reimburse my account excluding the few days of membership I had. They also mentioned they had set up my account for automatic renewal every year, I did not authorize this.

So all of you are aware, Cassmates.com/Memory Lane is also in some kind of partnership with Experian Protect My ID and giving them our confidential credit card numbers as well as our private password; as a result Experian has also charged my account (without authorization) for a monthly membership fee of $12.95. Experiean is extremely difficult to work with in reversing these charges and I had to finally file a formal complaint with my credit card company. I joined Classmates.com in June, 2010. When I received a $9.95 promo membership, it has turned out to be a site I virtually never used (for starters, a lot of the information is outdated, and they couldn't even spell my school name correctly, Northeast). So I never thought about June 2011 coming up and being automatically debited $39.00 for a renewal. I emailed the company immediately and almost begged them to cancel and refund the money. I have lost my condo to foreclosure, am on food stamps and have even had my home TV, internet & phone turned off because I can't pay.

It was a total fluke I even had the $39 in my account to pay when Classmates.com took the money. The response was that I gave the okay for automatic renewal when I originally signed up and all I can do is stop it in the future (which I have now done). I don't recall an email reminder being sent by classmates.com, because I would have stopped the renewal right then. I am just so overwhelmed by my financial situation that giving up $39 unwillingly is depressing, aggravating and makes me feel I have really been taken advantage of.

Yesterday, in my third email to them, I pointed out exactly what was wrong with their customer service. I said that I would make sure to not recommend this site to all my contacts and that I was going to contact their CEO (thanks, Mike, for your information!). I also mentioned that there was a lot of online chatter about their terrible customer service and renewal scam.

I did call the CEO and left a message. I got a return phone message this morning, and then an email saying that they were going to make an exception in my case and refund my renewal fee and take my name off the site. They said that they were looking at making changes to their policies. Do not give up if you want a refund, I think that's what they count on. She said that I "agreed" to it when I signed up. I asked to speak to a manager and was told that managers do not accept incoming calls.

I then told her that I want a manager to call me and she reluctantly took my number. I was not happy with her or her attitude and explanations so I called back and spoke to "Jalon." I asked him why I was not notified prior to them going in to my account and helping themselves to $39.00 to at least give me a chance to make sure the funds were available and to be forewarned of the charge.

He gave me the same rote answer that "Kevin" gave me--that I apparently agreed to it over a year ago. I told him I want completely out and he told me that if he removes my profile, I will no longer gain access to Classmates at all and my $39.00 is forfeited.

I signed up for a one month trial with "Classmates" last two years ago. The pop up on my computer stated they would give me information on people I went to school with years ago. I never used the information and forgot about it until today, when I noticed my credit card was charged $39.00 for a renewal fee. I called in to cancel my subscription and asked for a refund. I was told they would cancel the renewal next year but did not or would not give refunds. I'm out the $39.00 they just charged me. However, I will contact my credit card company along with the State Attorney General's office and file a complaint.

My husband signed up for a free trial on Classmates.com. Our credit card was auto-charged when the free trial had expired. As stated by others, he did not auto-renew, but in essence he did. There is an option when signing up for premium service or for the trial for auto-renewing that must be unchecked in order for you not to be charged. We have since found that most pay sites have the auto-renew option checked by default. A little reading before submitting payment goes a long way. So, those that say they did not sign up for auto-renewal, well, you actually did. Classmates.com is actually in the right on this one. Good Luck everyone!

When asked to cancel and refund my card, they replied that membership would be cancelled Oct 2011 and I would be put on manual renewal, and free trial and continue to get notifications. It says they have a non-refund policy. I think a person should be notified that it is time for renewal so a choice can be made. Things happen in a year and this would certainly eliminate all the complaints and unfair charges to members, or at least make it clear that you have selected auto-renewal and that it non refunded. I have read some of people's complaints. I have a couple of suggestions. Before you give your money away to any site, check the options of how to cancel your billing. I checked Classmates and do not know when they started with the following option but I called them, and you have to go into your billing information and cancel automatic billing.

I am sure that it is most likely in their fine print somewhere about the fact that they do it, but who ever really reads that junk. They know it and do it because they have very few ethics or morals, obviously. When you sign up for anything, newspaper, magazine or whatever,t hey at least clearly state your options for renewal. I cannot stress strongly enough, before you ever sign up for anything on the internet, check out the method of cancellation. If they list a phone number, call it for verification.I f the phone is automated, never an option to reach a person, or the only method of contact is e-mail, don't do it!

Despite the cancellation of subsequent charges after promotional offer, Classmates.com would incur increased client relationships by changing the business model to notification prior to charging. Since the service is frivolous, consumers tend to put on the back burner thereby omitting cancelling automatic renewals. Consumers are upset with this practice despite agreeing to said practices.

Currently unemployed, a charge of $39.95 for a service that is not of high priority is viewed as a waste of money. Attempting to convey this concept to Classmates.com and submitting a complaint to our credit card carrier, had no affect. Time spent in order to argue our case, including filing this complaint, surpasses the value of the Classmates.com services. I sent an email on 11/4/10 (the same day) and demanded my membership be cancelled and my money be refunded. They refused. They claimed I agreed to automatic renewal. I did not. I called them and the guy I spoke to again said they do not do refunds and that I could cancel in 2012. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and the FBI’s Internet Fraud division. I have put a stop payment on this account and am disputing the charge with my bank. This company should be prosecuted for theft. I lost $59.00 and have spent several hours trying to get justice and filing complaints with the authorities.

I just contacted my credit card company and they will not apply the charge to my card until they dispute the amount automatically charged by Classmates. I was told that there were several disputes regarding Classmates, and that most received their money back! I suggest others to get in touch with your credit card company. Good luck!

On October 30 2010, I was automatically charged $39 for an annual renewal on my credit card without any authorization from me. I had renewed previously for a one year term only. I am unable to contact same. Okay, just made contact. Like the others, they tell me because I did not cancel. They also tell me this info was written on the second paragraph below the annual promotion info. I am responsible for this debt. I signed up for a one year promotion only. They offered me a promotion annual rate now for $9.99 and told me that that is the best that they can do. Unfortunately, it is already deducted from my credit card, $39. I was told that I would receive a $20 credit to my card. We shall see. I am one very frustrated (normally) pleasant senior! Frustrated. I never used it!

I noticed today I was charged for the membership again. I called spoke to Trisia and told me it automatically goes to automatic renewal (not rue). She said I could get a refund but would be charged $9.95 for a year's gold membership. I thought it was better than nothing.

Contacted my bank and filing a refund for all the charges and would have to wait for the next few days on this. Although after I hung up with Trisia, I was charged instantly for the $9.95 membership. I had deleted all the account on my profile and made sure it was on manual renewal but then again Trisia said it would be on manual renewal. This is a scam and I will be spending time on the internet to let people know what is going on.

Classmates offered to reduce the membership to the $9.95 I originally paid. When the credit card company declined the lesser charge because the original charge put me over the limit, they refunded the $39. Try going through your credit card company's dispute charge procedure. Please post this as it may help others.

Classmates.com automatically renewed my membership and charged my credit card $39 without my prior knowledge or authorization. When I established my account/membership, I set my profile to "manual" renewal, however, I did provide my credit card number for the initial membership - this is the credit card number they used for the automatic renewal.

After the charge appeared on my credit card statement, I requested that my account be closed/cancelled and that a refund for the unauthorized charge of $39 be issued and they have refused. They are indicating that when I joined, I agreed to automatic renewals unless I specified manual renewals (which I did). They have also indicated that they have now changed my account to manual renewals so this will not happen in the future.

I fail to understand why that was necessary when the account was already set up for that feature. In addition, they advised me that my "Gold membership will expire and revert to 'free' status on Oct 15, 2011. After your membership reverts to free status, you'll still be listed on Classmates and receive email notifications about your account activity."

This makes no sense whatsoever. I have contacted the BBB, my credit card company and the Attorney General's office in my home state. I am asking your assistance with resolving this issue and in order to warn other potential victims of this scam.
