Classmates.com is very decieving in it's practices regarding subscription renewal. When I recieved confirmation of their subscription a year ago they did not provide any information on how it would be renewed or for how much. I did not get any notification regarding that I was going to be renewed for this service until I notice the charges on my credit card. I immediately contacted Classmates.com and requested that this service be removed and for my credit card to be credited back. They said that my account was set to Auto Pay and that my money cannot refunded back. I believe I had set this feature to not Auto Pay but it was over a year ago and I cannot be 100% sure since they do not provide a confirmation email. I have not used their service since it was renewed nor I will be using it in the future. All I wish is for them to credit my credit card for a service that I rarely used and will no longer be using.

If Classmates.com has pre-filled the option, they should be REQUIRED to send out reminders. I have been trying to cancel my membership but they won't honor my request. When I attempted to cancel my membership, all I got was a white screen after selecting membership information until it was too late according to them). Classmates.com has charged my credit card account $39 without my approval. I want to end my association with Classmates.com but they say they are keeping my money. They have no phone number and you cannot speak with a person. They are scammers, claiming that old Classmates are trying to contact me, but the Classmates were not. How can a company that takes advantage of people (especially the elderly and disabled) like this be allowed to continue to operate?

Like others, on Dec. 23rd 2008, I got charged an automatic renewal for gold membership without consent. I was a gold member in 2006 to scope out info on my 10 year reunion. They kept my credit card information, even after it had expired and charged me $39.00 for a renewal last month. I've been working with my bank to get the charge back. All they need is me to call Classmates and prove they refuse a refund, and my bank will refund the money for me. What a scam! I had to cancel my credit card and send for a new one.

I was charged $39 on 23 Dec. 08. After looking back at my records, I saw that I had joined Classmates.com on 23 Dec 07 for $9.95. I wrote to complain about this charge without my permission and was informed that, "While purchasing your Gold membership, you were provided with information just above the Submit Payment? button explaining that all memberships are enrolled in our automatic renewal program." I did not recall any information about automatic renewal and had difficulty finding the information about that and how to prevent the charge in the future. What was NOT addressed about my complaint was the fact the charge quadrupled. I also feel that automatic renewals should provide the consumer with some reminder. We sign up a YEAR before we are charged again. I do not recall agreeing to the renewal and am VERY unhappy. I am still talking with them and will be talking with my credit card company at my earliest opportunity.

I had a Gold Membership with Classmates.com which was scheduled to automatically renew on Dec 1, 2008. Two weeks prior to that time, I went to the web site with the intent to set my account to NOT renew. When on that web page, it was clearly stated that I could renew (12 months) for $9.95. I decided to let it renew. When I received my Visa statement, I saw Classmates.com had charged me $39.00 for the renewal. I've already attempted to clear the matter with their Member Service dept with no success. They simply told me that this charge is non-refundable and I agreed to automatic renewal. This is not the amount I agreed to when I renewed membership. I have copies of my Email correspondence with them.

I have a regular (free) Classmates.com account. Last week, for the first time ever, I got email stating that someone had signed my guestbook. But the name of the person was glossed over in the email. They claimed that if I paid for a Gold subscription ($19.99) I could view my guestbook. Like a sucker, I did it. The name in my guestbook was of someone I'd never heard of. I sent that person email to find out who they were and never heard back. Two days later I got another signee. I'd never heard of this woman either but noticed that she was from my old high school (although she graduated 6 years before I was even born!) and that she had similar interests to me. I wrote to her to ask who she was and if she'd signed my guestbook. She wrote back immediately to say that she did not and that she'd never heard of me either.

This is obviously a huge scam, where Classmates.com just fudges almost-random names into your guestbook in order to get you to pay their fee (and in the further hope that you won't cancel the automatic renewal to your credit card). I'm betting the poor slob whose name they fudged into my guestbook will have to pay to see the email I sent him, asking if he really signed my guestbook. Multiply this self-perpetuating scheme by 40 million suckers and you can see how they make their money!

I immediately emailed Classmates.com and told them that I was not renewing at this time. I changed my membership renewal to manual and deleted my credit card information. (You wouldn't even know where this information is located because they have it so well hidden. I still haven't been able to find anything with my original activation date.) I just discoverd that I too was charged a $59 annual automatic renewal charge for classmates.com on 12/26/08 on my single major credit card. I did the $15 3-month free trial for classmates.com once over 3 years ago in the summer of 2005 and opted out of the automatic annual renewal policy immediately after signing up and then never renewed again or even heard from them classmates.com regarding billing until yesterday's credit card statement. I checked all my old credit card statements, which thankfully Bank of America has stored on their website back to October 2006, and have no record of any further charges by classmates.com or evidence of me still being a member. Thus, why are old, inactive customers now being charged with an automatic renewal fee! I contacted classmates.com via the e-mail (Reba at membercare@mc.classmates.com) and here is one pertinent portion of their response The automatic renewal program and no refund policy are also explained in the Classmates Terms of Service, which you agreed to when you clicked the Submit Payment button to finish your membership payment. However, let me reiterate, I am not a classmates.com member anymore, which is even clearly documented in my credit card states going back 2.5 years. Classmates.com must not be doing well financially if they have to resort to these scams now to survive. Hopefully, classmates.com files for bankruptcy shortly since their business practices have completely gotten unscrupulous!!!

No one was trying to get in touch with me by the way. Just recently I read about how they would charge your card $39.00 with the automatic renewal. I was not happy to hear that 1.)They would charge my card with prior approval and 2.)They would increase the yearly rate by 4 times. I immediately went out and changed my account and took off the automatic renewal and guess what they did...They charged my card that day for another years membership. I have contacted them multiple times to no avail. I have well documented proof that I notified them before the renewal and they charged me anyway. Now they are sending me email telling me that they are sorry but it's to my benefit that they charged me and that they are making the site more fun for me.

This company had lured me in with a trial membership. By searching their website, I further discovered that there was no way to contact them by phone or mail and I therefore e-mailed then. After spending some time at their website, I was able to figure out how to go in and remove my credit card information from their system . I received an automatically generated response from them explaining that when I signed up for the initial trial period, I agreed to the automatic billing at the end of the trial period. However, as with other reputable companies, Classmates never sent me anything in writing and never notified my that my trial period was about to expire. I requested that my credit card charges be reversed, which they are refusing to do. I cannot believe that a company can be allowed to charge me in advance for a year's worth of service that I have no intention of using. They are luring people in and then stealing their money.

I guess I'm not the only one who has been 'defrauded' by these people! I keep close tabs on my bank account. When I saw the 'automatic' payment was pending on my account, I immediately got in touch with classmates.com, cancelled my membership and asked for a return of the $39.00 they had charged to my account, telling them it would cause an overdraft. They refused to return my money and said that I had authorized them to automatically charge my account. I NEVER authorize anyone to automatically charge my account for something such as this. They obviously have their information written up so that it's deceiving. I would never have gotten involved if it was a case of one year later having an automatic charge!! I have never heard of an 'honest' business refusing to return your money. I now have a year's subscription to something I will not use. (This is prepayment for their services). I am very disappointed in their 'tactics' and wonder if other members are aware of their practices. If there is a 'Class Action Suit' against them, at some point, I certainly will join it. I guess the only thing we can do, in the mean time, is let our relatives and friends know that this is not a company, organization or whatever, that you want to do business with. And, I'm furious with myself for being so stupid as to let myself be defrauded in this way.

How or where do I find out an address for this company? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, what can I do as a concerned consumer, to help prevent other people from being defrauded? My bank did advise that as I matter of course I should always google a company to see if there are consumer complaints about them. Even if there was an automatic renewal that was a year ago..... they should of sent some kind of heads up to let us know that we were going to be billed again. I disputed the charge with my credit card company and they took off the charges, they may reinstate them after they find out what classmates policey's are,but I will keep on disputing the charge until its resolved. They say they do this as a convience to their customers. But I truly think its an inconvience. I've included their phone number and address just in case others need to call and complain about their decpective practices. If I cant resolve this with them and or my credit card compny my next step is to file a class action against them.

I looked at the time of the charge and I was asleep at the time so I called them up and asked them about the charge and they said that it came from classmates.com. I was like shocked and wondered how in the world could this happen.

Hitting the 'Send' link caused a popup to appear saying they were holding the 'free email' until i paid for a Gold membership. The administrators are deceitful and seem to use trickery to get money, under false pretenses. I'm relieved that i never did give them any credit card number, unlike so many other people who i see have been ripped off. I had notified them that day that I wanted my account canceled and money refunded. Instead I got an email giving me directions on how to turn off auto-renewal. My account was not credited the full amount, instead, upon disputing the charge by telephone with their customer service rep., they would only reduce the charge by 1/2, and credit me $29.50 for the 2 year membership. I emailed Classmates and said I did not want this and to cancel. They pretty much told me too bad. I guess when you sign up they automatically sign you up for auto renewal at the end of your term. You have to go in and change this after the sign up process, if you don't they keep charging you. They give no notice at the end of your term that a new charge is coming. The only reason I know is because I looked at my credit card statement. I wonder how many people don't do this and keep getting charged once a year.

I have been a member since 2000 and I do not recall ever having trouble in the past, I was never automatically renewed when I joined before. Bottom line, why would a legit company make it so difficult to reach someone live? I hope someone trys to investigate this further, because it would be a great tool to get reunions together, but it's not worth getting your credit card intercepted knowing that you can not reach anybody live ever. Who runs this company?

I signed up for 3 months only and they have charged by credit account for another 3 months. I tried to contact them and was put on hold for over 15 min. I will try to contact my credit card to have the unauthorize charge removed.

Unauthorized charge to my credit card

They tool money out of my account that I did not authorize them to do. I was trying a FREE trial on classmates and they charged me for the full service. I never authorized them to take money out of my account. I have tried to contact them about this, but they refuse to respond.

They overdrew my account costing me $35.00 in overdraft fees plus the $39.00 that they took out for what was suppose to be a FREE trial.

I have an unauthorized CC charge for $39 from classmates online. As a result, I will go on to google and click on their sponsored ad 25 times a day for the next 30 days...this will cost them way more than the $39 they are trying to bilk me out of.
