I will never give them a good referance and I have notified all my friends and family. I solved my problem I canceled my checking account.Let's see how they like that.

Entered what I thought was a trial membership, one time fee, but after many months my wife told me they have been renewing my membership every three months. She thought I knew about it and didn't say anything, but after the trial period was up their emails stopped and I thought that was it, over and done. No, that's not the case. Now I can't get them to give me my password so I can access my supposed account, which I think I never started in the first place. I probably never set up a password in the first place. They have no legitamate way to contact them other than their web page in member services and there is no way to keep a record of it. There must be something illegal in this situation.

I was charged an automatic renewal fee of #39.00 after one year which I wasn't expecting. Now I can't even log in to cancel the way they say I need to. The phone number my credit card company gave me to contact classmates is always busy. This is unfair business practices that they won't help me log into their web site to cancel yet I'm sure they will continue to charge my account. The only way I feel I can stop them is by canceling my credit card. This company clearly doesn't care about it's customers the way they do business. Classmates just wants our money by using deceptive business practices. If they were a legit business they would credit my account $39.00 for my not wanting to continue using their web site. This company needs to be stopped right now.

A $39.00 renewal fee was charged to my Discover Card account on 1/30/09 and they state I agreed to this renewal. I most certainly did not, but they say the $39.00 is non-refundable. Like everyone else, I had cancelled my gold membership after September, 2008. They charged me again in December, 2008 & I called to get completely removed from the site. I explained that my membership had been cancelled & that my account even indicated that I was a free member. They refused to refund my $15.00 fee. I didn't want to cancel my debit card, so I let it go. In March, 2009, another $15.00 debit appeared on my bank account. I've tried and tried to get the money refunded and my so-called membership cancelled. I was informed that my membership had never been cancelled (it was!) and that no money would be refunded. I, again, told them to remove me from their site, e-mails, etc. and was told that, if my request was granted, I would be forfeiting any right to pursue a refund for the charges already applied to my bank account. I said that I would not forfeit my right to pursue a refund and was told that, because of my refusal, my membership could not be deleted. How in the world can these people get away with this? I see on yoru site that many, many people have and/or are experiencing the same frustration that I'm dealing with. PLEASE, tell me what I can do about this. I'd love to sue classmates and shut them down, but, frankly, I can't afford to hire an attorney. Is there anything that can be done to recoup the money they've taken without my permission and despite my past complaints and request for cancellation?

I tried everything! AND I mistakenly put my professional name (no one i went to elementary school would even know who that is!) and the incorrect graduation year, a long time ago! I tried over and over to correct it but no luck. It has been there for years now with this incorrect info. and NO WAY TO CORRECT IT!! and NO WAY TO CONTACT THEM and NO WAY TO CALL THEM .Now I am reading all these complaints about people being hit up for money. I had no idea I was even being charged all these years so I have to check into that. I THOUGHT the minimal service I signed up for was FREE! I NEVER opted for GOLD membership or anything else. They keep hitting me up for that but I dont do it. I cant even get to my so called messages they say I have, so I just ignore them now, since I have never been able to contact them no matter how many times I tried to cancel the whole thing so they will just leave me alone. . Now I find out I might be getting hit for payments to boot! HOW are they still in business with all these complaints??And Does ANYONE know how to get in touch with them?? I thought that after the $15.00 payment (3 months), that was it, until I noticed that classmates.com was trying to pull $15.00 out of my bank account again on March 1st, 2009. I tried calling immediately, but there was no telephone number listed on the website and could only send an email. Subsequently, I received a return email the next day, which contained directions on how to change your account from automatic renewal to manual renewal. The problem is, I never knew that the subscription was set to renew itself, never ever received advance notice, nor was I aware when I first signed up... I tried contacting customer service again today, in which I received their online chat. They told me that I would not be able to receive a refund, even though I tried canceling on the same day of the renewal. They told me that I needed to advise them before the renewal date! The same day would not work for them. What a rip-off! I will never ever want to even look at this site ever again, let alone sign up again. To all those interested in classmates.com, becareful, they are a bunch of scammers! The same thing happened to me on Reunion.com and they honored my refund and it was a lot more than $15.00! Here is a follow up to my complaint of 2/22/09 regarding Classmates.com withdrawing money from my bank account without my permission. I finally got thru to a representative who nicely argued with me stating that I chose automatic renewal when I signed up (which was not the case). I told her that I signed up for three months for only $15! In the past I had joined for a three month period with no problem and no automatic renewal. She said that in the fine print is states that my account will automatically renew and I said there was no such statement when I signed up in 8/08. I asked to speak with a supervisor who was very rude and hung up on me after I expressed that I felt that Classmates was deceitful in that they are charging customers credit/debit cards illegally. She said their clients are very satisfied and I said that has nothing to do with the fact that they are renewing memberships without customers permission and the fact that they withdrew money when they were not authorized to do so. She then proceeded to tell me that it was my oversight and that I should have called when the first charge took place (three months after). I said I didn't know to call, because I had only signed up for three months and did not think that Classmates would be automatically charging my account. In fact, I rarely signed on. It was yesterday morning when I found out that my card was being charged. I did inform the supervisor that I have already contacted my bank and she said she could not help me. When I said that there are several complaints just like mine, proving I am not the only one with this complaint, she said she's read all the complaints and that the customers failed to read the fine print. I said that Classmates must have changed their policy and fine print without notifying their customers, because there was no such fine print when I signed up for a one time membership fee for $15. That's when she said she was going to hang up on me, and she did just that. I was not nasty and I did not raise my voice, but she became very defensive and rude and that was it! I said I didn't know to call, because I had only signed up for three months and didn't think that Classmates would be automatically charging my account. I am keeping my membership active (not on automatic renewal) until this is resolved. If it is deleted, it was without my consent .

On 8/4/08, I joined Classmates.com for a three month period for $15. That is all I opted for. I have joined in the past, but there was never a renewal, just a one time charge. This morning, there was an e-mail suggesting that someone signed my yearbook, so I signed on to see if I was able to view the classmate even though I haven't been an active member. However, when I signed on, I found that my membership was current and active. I haven't signed on in so long, that I just figured since I only joined for a three month period, I was not active. I did not choose automatic renewal and just like in the past, I signed up for a one time charge of $15. In fact, I never knew there was an automatic renewal feature, but I am very good about monitoring credit card/debit charges and know for a fact that I only signed up for three months at $15. I checked my membership settings to see that I have been charged twice since 8/08 without my permission or knowledge. There is no number to call posted on their site, but they give you an e-mail option. When I clicked on e-mail for help, I get Oops! We can't find the page you're looking for. How convenient. I looked up complaints against Classmates on Consumers Affairs and found that this has happened several times and is ongoing (the same story as mine). I called my bank, but I can only dispute the last charge, as they will only go back 60 days. However, I did not know I was being charged for this, so I find it unfair that I cannot get my money back for the other months I was charged for without my knowledge. I was able to get a number for Classmates through my bank. When you call it, their recording states that if you are calling about a credit card or debit charge, it's because you have chosen automatic renewal. Since this is part of their actual greeting/recording, it's obvious that it's an ongoing issue with regards to customers being charged without their knowledge. This is not acceptable. How can so many people have the same complaint if Classmates is on the up and up? Even if it's $15 they've withdrawn, it's still your money and they don't have the right to take what's not theirs to take unless they have permission.

I hope if enough people write in and complain about Classmates charging customers without their knowledge, action will be taken against them. I guess the next step for me is the BBB. There was no notification or email stating any charges were taken out or would be or that they've changed their system and you will now be automatically renewed even though you've chosen to manually pay. Once I get this squared away, I will remove my profile. I don't trust Classmates.com. I am glad I singed on today to find that they have been illegally charging my debit card. This is bad business and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a class action case is forthcoming.

I signed up for classmates.com gold account to use as a source for a class reunion. The event took place in October 2008. Today, February 12, 2009 I received my credit card bill and saw a membership fee of $39.00. I telephoned classmates.com to ask them to cancel my membership which they said they would but the $39.00 annual fee is non-refundable (it is for the upcoming year, not for services rendered). I asked to speak with a supervisor as I thought this was an unethical business practice. Joanne enforced the non refundable fee policy and said she would cancel my membership. When I expressed how unethical I thought this was she said she could change my type of membership for the year for $9.95 and reverse the $39.00. I told her that my need for the membership was no longer needed as the event was over. She still stood by the non refundable policy. I had no choice but to at least recover a portion of my $39.00 and have the $9.95 charge. I feel this is a very unfair business practice. They quoted a term in the agreement that states something about if you agree to auto renewal that cancellations are subject to a non refundable fee. Granted I agreed to the terms not realizing I would not be able to easily cancel my membership and not be refunded the fee for services I would not be using. I feel this warrants attention to protect consumers from such a practice.

They indicate on their website that you can try out their trial enrollment for $15. From reading these many complaints, I see that I am not the only one that understood that to be a one-time payment; no, they intend that to be $15 per month for three months, and you have to really run fast to stop it from going beyond that ($45). I have no doubt whatsoever that this is intended to mislead, and it is clear from reading these many complaints that plenty of people are being charged $15 per month for at least three months even if they manage to stop it at the three month end. Their website is deliberately misleading, I have no doubt about that, even just based on how many people got the idea that the $15 charge would be ALL they would be charged, whereas their carefully crafted writing made it appear to be a one-time $15 to try it out. If misleading the public in order to bleed money out of them is not illegal, welcome to the monkey house. SURELY what they are doing is illegal, and with this many people being scammed, even if it's only for $45 each (or who knows, maybe they go on stripping folks' credit cards after that), we should file a legal complaint.

I have not been able to login into my account for over a month. I have emailed member services and dealt with at least 6 different people. Each time I have explained that the emails they send with the links to reset the password never arrive. Each time they send me the same directions. I keep telling them that it is not working and ask if we can try something else. I have asked for a phone number and of course never receive one. They have been kind enough to give me a free month of service, but that is totally useless since I can't login.

I have tried a number of times to have classmates stop their $15 per quarter charges to my account, yet they keep doing it. They said I was enrolled in auto renewal, yet the web page said manual renewal. I received an email from them as follows:

Hello Michael, Thank you for your reply. I apologize if this matter has caused you any frustration. Unfortunately, our records do not reflect a previous cancellation associated with your membership. On your renewal date, which was Jan 24, 2009, your Gold membership renewed for another term because you were still enrolled in the automatic renewal program at that time. Please be assured that your membership is no longer enrolled in the automatic renewal program and you will not be charged again. Your Gold membership will expire and revert to FREE status on Apr 24, 2009. We make efforts to ensure our members understand the terms of the membership they are purchasing by providing information about the automatic renewal program directly on the credit card payment page, right above the Submit Payment? button. On the same page, it states that payment for a Gold membership is non-refundable. The automatic renewal program and no refund policy are also explained in the Classmates Terms of Service, which you agreed to when you clicked the Submit Payment button to finish your membership payment We hope you'll take some time to explore and enjoy Classmates.com and get the most out of your Gold member benefits. We're constantly updating the site to make it more valuable to you and more fun to use. Thank you for being a part of the Classmates community! If you have any further questions or concerns, please reply directly to this email and we will be happy to assist you. Sincerely, Classmates.com Michelle

This is a follow-up to my story posted on 1/21/09. It took several emails, but I finally got Classmates.com to refund the $39.00 they wrongfully charged me. The first guy said the charge was nonrefundable. I wrote back and said that was an unacceptable answer and that I would not pay. I also said I was disputing the charge with my credit card company. This led to a reply from yet another representative from the company who said that if I wanted they would refund the $39.00 and then charge me $19.50, the special promotion price of a new Gold Membership. Unbelievable! I told them again this was NOT acceptable, that I would continue the dispute with my credit card, that I was immediately filing complaints with the appropriate agencies, and that I wanted the name and address of the highest ranking officer in the company to whom I could write a letter of complaint. Well, a third guy wrote back and said that they would make a one time exception to the no-refund rule and reverse the charge to my credit card. As soon as I saw the refund on my credit card account I immediately went to the Classmates.com website and completely removed my registration, as they call it, from their website. Now, I know they can never charge me again because I no longer exist on their website! I encourage all of you to continue to write and complain until you get your money back!!!

December 2007, after using Classmates free service for several years, they convinced me to sign up for the Gold Membership. I did. There was a small charge, which was charged to my Mastercard.

December 28, 2008 I found I had been charged $39 on my Mastercard by Classmates! I investigated, and through other victims of their deceptive billing practice, I found that in the Terms Of Agreement, on page 7, in the fine print, written in excessive legalese, was a comment that membership billing would be automatic. I realized then that I had been duped out of $39. I was never forewarned about this fact. There are no postings or other information that warns members about this unfair billing practice. I quickly filed a Dispute with Mastercard, which produced no results. I also attempted to cancel my membership. I have had three email exchanges with someone named Monica in the Membership Services department, but all she sends me are canned email messages, and she has repeatedly brushed aside my request to totally cancel my membership and remove all my personal information from their data base, including my credit card number. I informed them that I am willing to forfeit the $39, but I want to be removed from their system. They will not do it. In fact, Monica has not responded to my last email in which I said I was going to file a formal complaint with the WA Attorney General's Office. This morning I did file a formal complaint with the Washington Attorney General's Office. Right now, I just want the membership canceled and my data removed from their servers. They can keep the $39. I was a fool for not reading the 7 pages of fine print in the Terms Of Agreement. Classmates' methods, however, are deceptive and unfair. There is no means of contacting them directly. They have built a solid shield to guard against phone calls and personal contact at their office.

Classmates doesn't only tell you someone is 'looking' for you, they actually post false partial commentary, the whole of what you can read once you subscribe to their service.

Two weeks ago, I saw a partial comment under a picture of mine, and I actually wanted to look up someone else, so I thought, what the hell, and signed up for the $15 deal. I clicked the button on $15, I am sure of that now, but as the page was being sent, it suddenly said the $39.00 amount. I immediately closed the entire page down, trying to avoid completion of the charge. The site does not give the user manual control over the choices, which is shady in itself. I then signed back on to see if it went through or not. For awhile, it appeared it didn't, and I was relieved. Then, after about half an hour, I suddenly showed up as 'Gold'. While on the site, I also noticed that there was no longer a comment under the picture. I checked ALL the pictures, NO COMMENT under ANY of them. It was a fake disappearing comment aimed at using fraud to get me to re-up to Gold status. I am so pissed! I did not use the site again, and attempted to contact their customer care. That page would not load. It would not load for three days. I finally found a page that would, and explained that the button was perhaps hit in error, but regardless I just wanted the $15 service. They never responded. No response to the phone numbers I found on line either. I made sure I did not sign on again so they could make no claims that I used their service, thus having cause for keeping my payment. I then called my bank, and filed a complaint to put a stop on my debit card. I just got a letter from Wells Fargo saying they credited my account for that amount, and that the matter is resolved. One reason they did that I believe is because I attempted action and was ignored by Classmates. Apparently when the bank investigates, they do the same thing so see if they can reach anyone. Guess not.

When you try to make changes through the internet it keeps saying the 'link' in not valid. 99% of companies will return your money when you tell them you did not want to renew. Wow, well at least I know I'm not alone. I too was scammed by Classmates.com automatic membership renewal not once but twice. When it happened in January 2008, I changed the status of my membership so that my account could not be automatically renewed--however, January 2009 rolls around, and somehow my account is back on the automatic renewal option. I know I didn't change it.

I couldn't find a customer service phone number anywhere on their site. I sent an email, and just got an automatic response (telling me how to change my account from automatic to manual--yeah, I already did that last year...). I did find their customer service number from another complaint website (It's 1-425-917-5000 in case you need it, too). The two women I spoke with would not budge on their no refunds policy. Definitely deceptive and unethical business practices going on here. I will be contacting my credit card company to dispute the charges. I hope with the advent of free social networking sites, that Classmates dies off--it certainly doesn't derserve to still be in business.

Classmates.com automatically charged me for a three-month renewal about 2 years ago. I was pretty certain I never changed from manual renewal to automatic renewal, so I disputed the charge. Well finally I gave in thinking that maybe I did have it on automatic renewal so I paid the bill, but then ENSURED that my renewal status was reset to Manual. That's where the status should have stayed forever. But on January 11th, 2009, I was charged for Gold Membership and when I actually accessed my account just a few days ago it showed my renewal status as Automatic. I DID NOT CHANGE IT TO AUTOMATIC. I hardly ever access the website in the first place. I have exchanged numerous emails with Classmates.com and they are basically ignoring the issue and telling me that these memberships are non-refundable and that I should basically enjoy the features on the website. Well, this is UNACCEPTABLE to me. They did this to me once before and I was duped by them at that time, but not this time. I KNOW I DID NOT AT ANY TIME CHANGE my renewal status to automatic and thus, I should never have been charged. I believe this is a deceitful practice on part of Classmates.com and I REFUSE to pay this time. I am convinced they do this to numerous people - they change their renewal status to automatic and then charge them and then claim it was the members' faults for having it on automatic renewal even though those members NEVER DID HAVE IT ON AUTOMATIC RENEWAL. I have asked my credit card company to start an investigation and I am writing to any other agency to which a complaint can be filed. I want to immediately close my Classmates.com account, but don't want to touch it at this point until this matter is resolved.
