Classmates.com deducted $39.00 from my checking account stating I was a gold member. I have tried in vain to contact the company to request a refund of my money. The email complaint was not answered and there’s recording only at the phone number. The phone number is not available at their site and if not for your website and the comments by others scammed by Classmates.com, I would not have even known how to contact the company. I tried filing a complaint at BBB.org, but their site is having technical difficulties. I will now try to file a complaint with my bank. I just lost my job on 7/30/09 and of the last $70 I had in my account, Classmates.com got $40 of it.

Classmates.com has me on their site on the internet with erroneous information, saying I graduated a high school in 1972 and listing some of my classmates. None of this is true, not the high school nor the classmates. If my name is typed on the internet, this info comes up on me. They should not be allowed to use my name, which they have it as my former and current last name. They should not be able to take my name, lie about me, and post it on the worldwide internet. I have never been a member of this site.

Somehow, I wound up with a duplicate membership. I was trying to change my email address, so I emailed Classmates and Reba replied that my duplicate membership had been canceled. I replied back to Reba that I wanted to keep my gold membership that I had paid for. I just needed it transferred to my new existing email account. She needed the last 4-digits on the credit card I used to pay for the membership. I sent it to her. It has been 48 hours and my account is still blocked. They will not even let me open a new account. I am very disappointed in the way this situation has been handled and I think if I pay for a membership, I should be able to use it.

I have been a member for almost three years. All of a sudden, I can't log in with the same email and password that I had been using. It keeps me going back and forth without any help, which is very frustrating. I just want to cancel the whole thing. Also, I seem to be getting some charges on my card which were never authorized. I hope it's not them giving out my card number or they will hear from me.

I am the wife of the above-named and have taken over the financial records of my husband who is ill. I want to cancel the membership of Classmates.com. It is impossible to make contact with this company. My husband does not remember that he signed up for this and does not remember a username/password. On the same credit card bill is a charge for Privacymatters123.com of which he knows nothing; however, I have been able to cancel. Something is "fishy" as far as I am concerned. I hope you can help with an address or telephone number for Classmates that is consumer-friendly. The telephone number on the credit card for Classmates is of no help. The charge on the credit card for Classmates is $39.00. I have no idea for what period of time. The charge for Privacymatters123.com is $19.95 per month and has been cancelled as of today, 7/29/09.

I was counting on their email links to access my account for so long that I don't remember my original password. I used the sign-in form several times using my sign-in correct email address many times. The form states that they will send me my info but that did not happen. I tried to use their live chat but it states that I posted an email return address with errors. That was not the case. The said email address is the same one I'm corresponding with you now. I have been a member since November or early December of 2008 in good standing and without any notice from them otherwise. I have no way to access what I am paying for and I want to make sure that they don't try to rejoin me without my permission.
I paid for a gold membership for close to $40 and should be active for three more months. If I can't access then they owe me 10 bucks. I have also spent about three hours so far. My rate as a producer is $50 per hour which is cheap. I, as a sole proprietor of an entertainment company by the name of ** Music Production Studios, have personal contacts on Classmates.com which help my personal exposure as an artist who owns a production company. The biggest loss I have however is not being able to get in touch with people I've known for as long 40 years. How do you put a price on that?

As many have described, I am a gold member of classmates.com. I cannot access my account. Just as others have described, they tell you the password is wrong, fill in the info and we will email it to you. Then they tell you, "This is not enough information, sign up again." When you do, they cannot accept it because you are already a member. Fill in your info, can't remember or it does not recognize your password, give us your e-mail, we will send it - on and on, ridiculous. I also had the problem with the call center trying to figure out what privacy matters were. No one answered the phone, just a big scam.

While opening an email from Classmates and without any action on my part and with no indication that there was another company involved, Classmates subscribed me up with a company called "Privacy Matters 1-2-3" for $19.95 per month. When I got my credit card bill, I saw the charge, called the phone number and questioned it. They had all my information, name, address, and CC number. I asked to cancel and got an agreement with a promise of an email cancellation acknowledgment, which was never yet received. I also disputed the charge with the CC company. When I called again today, they confirmed that it was canceled and I asked how they got the information and they said Classmates. Check you bill for a similar charge.

I received unauthorized bank charges from this company for services I did not sign up for. They do not have phone service agents and instead you get to "chat" online with an agent. She was not interested in my dispute of charges. They said that the automatic bank charge would be removed in the future for my "account". "Chat" was terminated, period. My bank has the charge in dispute and said that they would dispute future charges from this company. This is stealing, pure and simple. They have my card number and charged what they wanted to charge for services I did not sign up for. There is no way to contact them in person or talk with managers, etc. They will continue to charge the $39 to my account, even if I change card numbers, for services I did not authorize.

I signed up for a one year "gold membership" account. My credit card was charged for an automatic renewal fee at the end of the membership year. I did not authorize this but Classmates.com says that it was part of the TOS I agreed to when I accepted the membership. I contacted Classmates.com by e-mail to request a refund and even offered to settle for a pro-rated refund (would have been 2 or three weeks into the second year membership). But they would not agree to refund any portion of the second year and cancel the gold membership. They only described a procedure to turn off the "automatic renewal" attribute in my account information so that the automatic renewal would not trigger again one year from now.
They are clearly not conducting business in good faith and I don't believe that their automatic renewal gimmick is communicated at membership sign-up time as they claim that it is. I still have the-emails they sent me when I initiated the gold membership and there is nothing stated about the automatic renewal gimmick. Consequences: the membership fee was $39.00. I have filed dispute paperwork with my credit card company.

If you signed up a long time ago and don't remember your user name or password, they will not send it to you or allow you to sign up again. Our class reunion is through them and there is no way to sign up and pay without this company, as that is how they organized it this time. They send you in a complete circle over and over again even if you do say re-sign up. You cannot re-sign up or get information sent to your e-mail if you do not remember your original information from sign up. If you remembered it, you wouldn't need the information. It is very frustrating! I do need to be on the site.

Nothing was good at all on the site, and I never contacted any of my old classmates. Never anywhere did it say they would charge automatically to renew. Sure enough, without any warning, my card is billed again; and no one was responding to my emails. And there's no number to call! This is horrible. On July 8, 2009, Classmates.com charged $39 on my debit card, stating that I had "renewed" a membership that I did not agree to. They said that I had checked a button within my account for automatic renewal, and that was not the case. When I went on their site to cancel and try to contact member services, they stated that there was a button that you can click to contact member services; but there was no button. At first, I had created a "free" account on Classmates.com. Twice, I was interested in paying the 3-month membership fee in order to try and get in touch with an old friend listed. I know for a fact that both times, the issue has arisen with the most recent time that I selected "manual" payment method. So, the membership would only be for that 3-month time frame. However, after viewing my checking account, I see I am still being charged for the 3 months. I never authorized this additional 3 months!
I know for a fact I had put my account on "manual"; yet, they automatically continued to deduct the monthly $15! I have contacted them, and frustratingly enough, they say that I must pay for the 3 months (I did not authorize). And then, upon that completion, they will remove me from the "gold" membership status and I will remain on their site as a "free" member.
1) I never authorized the 3-month continuation in that their system changed my "manual" to "automatic" payment option. But, it is my words against theirs (whoever "they" are). And 2) I have sent them e-mails regarding my complaint, and I have asked for my self to be removed from this crazy site, only to be told I couldn't receive a refund and I would not be removed from this site.
I am so ticked that these people are getting away with this! I trusted this site for years, and for this to happen really disappoints me! They have taken advantage of me and my account information. I want nothing to do with this site ever again. Help! How can I deal with something like this on the internet where there are no "real" people to talk to? How can they get away with practicing business like this?

I am teetering on the brink of a financial disaster. I am behind on all of my bills, including my mortgage payment. I could lose my house. I face the good possibility of losing my phone service, my internet service, and my electric utility service and the cancellation of my auto and homeowner's insurances. In January 2009, I took steps to consolidate all my bills, discontinue unneeded services such as refuse service (I now take my garbage to the public landfill), cancelled my cell phone service, and stopped giving contributions to my local church. I do not buy gifts for friends or relatives. I make birthday cards to give out. My husband is receiving $250 a month Social Security and I lost my job in October 2007 and am not employed. My husband and I recently started receiving food stamps. And so, I was shocked to see a $39 charge on my credit card which had a zero balance on it prior to the charge from Classmates.com.
I tried so hard to not use credit cards to pay for my cost of living expenses, i.e., mortgage payment, insurance, utilities and telephone. And now, a $39 renewal fee from Classmates.com! This is definitely an unneeded item! I have communicated with Classmates.com via email with Nita at Classmates Member Care Department (membercare@mc.classmates.com). I asked Classmates.com to reverse the charge and cancel my membership immediately. I complained that they sent me no notices of the renewal and they charged my credit card without my knowing it. Nita replied in a form letter that they "provided information about automatic renewal, right above the 'submit payment' button to finish, membership payment." Did I remember reading this a year ago? No. I definitely did not set up an automatic renewal for membership.
The only reason I was interested in Classmates.com was that my 40th high school reunion was coming up for the class of 1969 and I thought it would be a good way to find out if there were plans for a reunion gathering. As it turns out, I did receive word from others from my graduating class but I said I could not attend the reunion. I cannot afford the $20 for pizza one night and $36 for the barbeque the next day. I told Nita I was in dire financial straits and cannot afford this charge. She sent back an email stating more policy, disregarding my financial difficulties. What upsets me most is that they gave me no notice this was coming. If I had known, I would have cancelled membership with Classmates.com. This $39 charge from Classmates.com is a hardship for me and I believe they take unfair advantage of consumers by not giving notice of a pending charge.
If this credit card bill is not paid I will be reported to the credit bureau which will cause a finance charge increase on this credit card as well as all other credit cards I have. This will also be a derogatory report on my credit report and have an adverse affect on my credit rating. I will be turned over to a collection agency and suffer all the consequences that follow from this.

I was also duped by Classmates.com automatic renewal program. I kept a copy of the receipt they sent me two years ago and it mentions nothing about the automatic renewal program, their non-refundable membership fee, or their terms of service. After getting the runaround from Classmates.com, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The next day, Classmates issued a refund for the full amount to my credit card.
Although I was issued a refund, Classmates didn't offer a resolution to the underlying problem, which is ensuring consumers aren't duped into signing up for a non-refundable automatic renewal upon registration. Instead of acknowledging that they could improve their registration and notification process, they put the blame on me. I responded through the BBB complaint system that I wasn't 100% satisfied with Classmates' response and that it was poor business to blame the consumer instead of fixing the problem. I recommended the following, but I'm sure none will be implemented:
1. Disclose the automatic renewal program and that the membership renewal is non-refundable in their Member Welcome e-mail; 2. Send a reminder notifying members that their membership will be automatically renewed unless they opt out of the program (An e-mail I received from Classmates Customer Care states that Classmates doesn't send a reminder because many members prefer to reduce the paperwork and email that they must deal with on a regular basis. I'm sure all members would like to receive a notice telling them their credit card is about to be billed especially when two years have passed since their initial registration). 3. Provide members with copies of the web pages in question when requested. I requested copies and the Classmates Customer Care representative told they weren't available. This wouldn't be necessary if items 1 and 2 are implemented.

My credit card showed 2 charges for $19.95 each and will keep trying to charge my credit card $19.95 a month. Classmates.com won't cancel my membership and return my fee. They will only let me cancel the automatic payment. I have filed a Better Business Bureau complaint against Classmates.com in Washington State.

I am using MySpace now, it cost nothing and it reaches the people with better communication as does Yahoo Messenger, but I do not see why the Classmates keeps charging when I have paid.
I talked to the bank and asked them to stop allowing the payment to go through, but they said to call Classmates, 1-206-301-5900. Then they say, "we can't talk to you as you are not the person on the account". But I am the person on the account as it is my bank account, they don't care! Then you go online and try to cancel, but the account won't come up. I have made 5 long distance phone calls to them. They tell me that they don't have an 800 number. I am sure that they don't because they didn't want to pay for all the millions of unhappy people calling them to complain. They have very unfair business practices and no morals whatsoever.
Everyone is very apologetic, but that gets you nowhere. They gave me 2 different fax numbers and you guessed it, no answer on either of them. Of course not, they want to make it as difficult as possible so they can keep stealing your money. $15 once a month is not a lot of money, however, if they do this to 100 people every month, they are stealing $1500 every month and I would bet the number of unhappy customers is well over 100. Then online, I see there is a class action lawsuit against them. I can certainly understand why this is, I think I may get it on that! In a country where we already have so many problems, why does our so-called joy have to turn into one and one that we actually have to pay for? Can the owner of this company actually justify ripping off the American people like this? Not only do I want my money back, I think this company should be put out of business as they offer nothing to the people who think they might actually get something that they pay for.
In closing, I beg everyone to only sign up for this service if you can afford to lose a lot of money, get very frustrated when trying to cancel and have nothing else important to do except waste a lot of time trying to deal with people who are only stealing from you and not caring about anything else.

I wasn't able to get information about my missing password. I wasn't able to find a phone number. I was being "technically" challenged to the point where I believe there is some type of scam going on that makes it very difficult to opt out of this program. I contacted Chase to have them stop payments. They looked into it, but were not able to help. They said I needed to contact the provider directly. I once again received a charge on my account today. I once again wasted time trying to find out how to get into the system and cancel my account.
I called a number I found. I heard a message saying they were busy (high call volume) and then it automatically disconnected me. I finally was able to find another phone number and called that. After waiting some time, I got through to a person who told me the reason I wasn't able to get into the system was because I had another account. I told her I wasn't able to find out any information about that account in order to cancel. The system was not recognizing my name. She told me it was because I had deleted the account from the system. I told her that was most likely in an attempt to cancel this subscription several months ago. She told me that she was not able to give me a refund and she wasn't taking "no" for an answer. I finally told her I wanted to speak to a supervisor since she was not able to help me. I explained that I didn't feel this company was very customer service oriented to say the least.
I told her I felt that they were extremely "user-unfriendly" in the way their system is set up and it almost seems as though the system is set up to make sure that people are not able to cancel or close their accounts. How do we know that the people who set up their system are scrupulous? How do we know that they aren't just turning the other way and allowing IT folks to make sure it's difficult to get info out of the system? There had been a time a year or so ago where I tried to get into the system and noticed they had done a complete redo of the website. I started having difficulty at that time with getting logged in to the system, which is another reason I wanted out and off. The product certainly sucks and if anyone actually gives money to this company, they should expect nothing back in return but a big waste of their time. They may as well go throw money down the drain.

They refuse to acknowledge your complaints and try to intimidate you.
My debit card statement listed 206-301-5900 as their number, but you can't reach a live person there. I had to dig around in the internet to find a number to speak to a real person. To add, I got to speak to someone who was very condescending and tried to pick a fight with me over the phone. He ended up hanging up on me and refused to refund my money. After checking for several months, I realized very few of my classmates were on the website. There was only one legitimate person who contacted me but all other supposed contacts were people I had never heard of. They were definitely not my classmates and were probably fictitious. We had a small class of 207 so I know every name from our class. Only one was online.
I have not used the website for months and basically thought it was a waste of time and money. When I received my May 2009 credit card statement, there was a charge for $59 for membership renewal to Classmates. I tried to call the number on the credit card statement but the only way to reach anyone at Classmates was to email. I contacted my credit card company and disputed the $59 bill. They took it off pending return to Classmates. According to all the emails I have received from Classmates, they say they will put the $59 back through as I had not cancelled prior to the May renewal date. When I emailed them, there is no ability to negotiate and they insist they are going to make my account a free account but they say they cannot reverse the fee, period! I just filed this complaint with BBB. I signed up for a free Gold membership trial with Classmates.com in June of 2007. I ended up trying the service for a year. Under my profile, I did not allow them to renew my membership. In 2008, my membership was renewed anyway. I called them to correct the problem and was told that my profile did not reflect me changing the non-renewing option. Meaning, I had been charged for another year of Gold membership.
Because one year had passed, and in my mind, I could have made a mistake, I did not complain much. However, I requested that they exclude me from the automatic renewal from their side so that there aren't any misunderstandings on my end in the future. I verified that my membership was not set up for automatic renewal.
Yesterday, June 8, I was charged for a renewal once again for a Gold membership fee. I called them today, June 9th, and explained that I have gone through this before. The setting for automatic renewal was changed and they should not have charged me. The receptionist on the phone gave me the same explanation as I was given before, saying that I am now removed from automatic membership renewal the next time it comes up, but it would take effect next year, June 8, 2010!
Meanwhile, they are charging me another year of Gold membership fees. They're telling me that they have a non-refundable policy! So I am stuck once again paying for something I will not use. I do not intend to use their service! I don't know how else to tell them and stop them from charging me! After doing more research this time, I realize that this is a very common thing that they do!
Not even one full day had gone by and they want to charge for something that I don't elect to use the whole year. This is definitely not good business and I have no idea how and why they have received such a high rating from BBB. Again, they should have not charged me for the service. They had no right to do so! And it just seems that not one can really stop them, so they keep doing it!

I found the number to Classmates.com and talked to some girl and I told her that when I unsubscribed, I thought it would take care of all of that but it didn't.
She told me that when I unsubscribed that only went towards the email. I said fine, but I have a charge on my bill from yesterday and I want it to be refunded. I am not using this thing anyway. She told me that they don't do that, but I wouldn't get a bill again. I told her that all of their stuff is misleading and that it doesn't show about the automatic billing and that I would have to go through so much crap just to get the billing to stop. Then she told me yes, it states on the billing page and I told her that when I read all of that stuff, it never stated anything about auto billing so I hung up on her. Yet, when I called the "Disputes" department at BofA, they told me that this charge could not be disputed through them and that I must call Classmates.com and settle the dispute with them.
Incidentally, the phone number for Classmates.com on the statement is bogus and disconnects. I just googled Classmates.com and reviewed their website. Guess what? They own many other ".com" database websites. For example, if you sign up and pay to research data on someone (property, marital status, criminal, etc.), your name, address & cc info is being transferred to Classmates.com.
I can't get a refund on my $39.00 and BofA tells me they assume zero responsibility to reverse the charges... nor will they guarantee that any future charges will be refused. Instead, BofA will re-open a dead account to honor any .com charges that are presented to them. Moral of the story: Better to declare bankruptcy and never use a cc again. I wish I had years ago. Instead, I did the honorable thing and paid off my $75,000 debt with never a late pmt. It wasn't worth it.

However, I did catch it this year when a $39.95 charge hit my Mastercard. I immediately contacted Classmates.com via email and also filed a dispute with my credit card company. I recommend that anyone dealing with this issue with Classmates.com or any merchant that fraudulently charges your card, dispute the charge with your credit card company. My understanding is merchants get hit with penalty fees for these charge reversals.
After I emailed Classmates.com, they responded with an email telling me there was no way to get a refund, my account had been changed to not auto renew in the future and they could offer me a special promotion of 50% off at $19.50. When I said no, I wanted a full refund, I then got another email offering me an annual renewal for $9.95 or keeping the renewal I had already been charged for. I emailed back and said no, I wanted a full refund. I have not heard back from them. That pesky auto-renewal! I noticed the charge on my statement, posted 4/10. I sent an email to Classmates, receiving the usual, "Our policy is no refunds," and "Gosh, when you enrolled, you agreed to automatic renewal," spiel. Umm ... no. In CT, we have regulations related to unfair trade practices, and one requirement is that any seller must refund cash or credit within 7 days of purchase upon request. An additional concern was that the credit card they used had expired since I had enrolled - and their customer service email explained that they utilize a service to update expiration dates and credit card numbers to avoid interruption of service?
Reviewing the Better Business Bureau report, I see that Classmates.com has an A+ rating? However, it looks like the bulk of complaints relate to auto-renewal issues and that most customers settle with Classmates for a partial refund which means that Classmates still makes a lot of money from this runaround game of theirs. Seriously, burying auto-renewal in the fine print at the end of a really long service agreement is not meaningful consent. I don't buy this, "Gosh, you should have read the agreement more carefully" explanation, as the company is fully aware and counts on the fact that most consumers miss this information. This is their business practice, not an unfortunate misunderstanding.

I want to do this without having to cancel my Discover card.

I joined several years ago and did not renew. Over the years, they sent me additions from my high school, none of whom I recognized until a week ago. I rejoined Classmates for 3 months to get in contact with fellow graduate. They upped the 3 months registration to 3 years and then said to get full info would have to upgrade to Gold. I went along with this dishonesty and then they would not transmit an email I wrote on their form for it contained info on contacting me, which is why I joined. They have a coin man's scam in not allowing contact between individuals on the pretext they are insuring safety. They intrigue you with a name that in this case I knew well, but then don't allow any contact. They claim they send their own email to the individual classmates but I have received nothing and expect my fellow classmate received nothing. Their actions are despicable, offering the possibility of re-meeting a classmate I have lost contact with but then, tantalizingly, preventing any contact, no address, phone number or email.

I paid $19.95 for a gold membership for 90 days. The second time I tried to log in (a day later), it said I was not a gold member and denied access! Instead of three months, I only had less than an hour of access! (I would like my money refunded!) I have since changed debit card numbers to prevent further access to my account. The help links at Classmates.com were not functional.

I was on Classmates.com and a friend forwarded me something from Ohio last January and, ever since, I have not been able to get into my account. I have requested since January for them to send me my password and I got no response. I can't even get in to join again. They say I have an account. Well, I'd like to use it! I paid for it!

I joined Classmates.com, gold membership, for $15. I was charged an additional $19.95 for something called Privacy Matters 123 and another $19.95 for something called PMIdentity.com. I never knowingly agreed to these extra charges. I don't ever know what they are for. This is fraud. I want my money back!

They charged me an automatic renewal (approximately $40.00), and there seems to be no way to contact them via email or phone. I do not recall signing up for this and want it to stop. I would like to join the class action lawsuit.
