I relied on a popular PC magazine's report that McAfee is good protection. Don't rely on them. I downloaded McAfee Total Protection in November, 2017. Ever since it was installed their program turns on immediately after booting my computer up. I've read and read the McAfee forum and the moderator only gave false information. He guessed it was this and guessed it was that. Frankly, I believe he was not an American by the way he constructed his sentences. I haven't found any fix anywhere. It highjacks your computer the minute it boots. I won't ever download any of McAfee products in the future.

My computer came with McAfee software pre-installed. When the subscription ran out I tried switching over to Windows Defender and I couldn't because it claimed another software package was installed. I thought I fixed the problem, but I guess McAfee never really left my system, because even after I've uninstalled it Windows Defender can't turn on live time protections because there's another program blocking it. When I go to the Action Center and view installed virus protection apps it shows the Status of McAfee as Not Protected and the status of Windows Defender as Off. When I click on McAfee the Take Action button becomes enabled allowing me to sign up for a subscription to pay to be protected on a computer that I already paid good money for. When I click on Windows Defender it remains disabled.

I've uninstalled Mcafee software completely and Windows Defender is able to be opened, but Live Time protection is still blocked. I've gone to services and Windows Defender was already automatically running by this point. Finally I tried a System Restore in desperation and I'm back with the Mcafee software blocking windows defender and trying to scare me into paying them a subscription. I blame not only Mcafee, but the producers of laptops that have Mcafee pre-installed. This is a totally horrible racket. I know that Windows Defender would work just fine because I have it on other computers. In this case Asus is also to blame. I'm sure they're getting a cut of the profits from the victims of digital extortion who pay the subscription fee. From now on I'm checking to see if any so called "anti-virus" software is pre-installed to leech money from me after I've already paid for the laptop.

For that reason I will not use them anymore and now when I have a new PC I have their alerts every 2 seconds trying to scam me in buying their product. McAfee software for antivirus support is very good. I have had some issues with the firewall but was taken care of very quickly. The new addition to the software is TrueKey. I thought since Intel owns both products they would be very good, BUT TrueKey has many issues. Many times it doesn't fill in the login nor password to locations that you set up. This should be automatic but it is NOT. They also have many issues with fields that require security answers. They automatically fill them in with either the login name or password. I worked with Tier II at Intel to resolve some of these issues but they do not seem to get fixed. The original version had no limits to how many accounts you set up. Now they give you 15 and if you need more and you will for an additional $20. They offer unlimited amount, so beware.

They told me my subscription had expired and that our computers were at risk. But I could not stop them from extending it free for awhile until I would decide to renew. I didn't want it but could not get it off my computer so I never felt secure and I installed different antivirus software. Then 16 months later, I got a bill for an automatic renewal... so for those months, we were paying for service for 2 computers. So we got no service from McAfee, and in essence, they cancelled a service that we had already paid for, and when we found this out after receiving service from another company, we were not offered a refund.

In my opinion, they stole from us. I finally had to uninstall the entire program. Obviously if I had not been getting all those messages about it, I would have kept on using it but there seemed to be no explanation or apology or attempt to find the reason for the problem. Took too long to find that McAfee Antivirus by freaking default installs Yahoo search into Firefox! This is called abusive manglement by despicable programmers. To fix this problem requires removing Mcafee. DO IT! Any company that forces you to use third party crap without your expressed approval is WORTHLESS. To avoid having to use a virus checker requires that you surf sanely. This means never clicking on anything in your email, never install anything you aren't sure of its source. THESE ARE NEVERS! It is exactly like the rules to safe sex.

Do yourself a favor, install a decent firewall. Don't believe that Microsoft is wondrous, they have always had ulterior motives (see Outlook, ponder Edge). I suggest installing ZoneAlarm. Found it when it first arrived on the scene, have used it sans antivirus for over twenty years. NEVER BEEN INFECTED!!! I also suggest you install and use as your primary browser, Opera. (http://www.opera.com/).

The Internet was once highly useful, you can return to useful provided you follow these rules. Lastly, contact your congress representatives to tell them you want email source verification. This would end spam, most cracks, and improve surfing speeds. The only people that would scream murder are the service providers ('cause it requires CPU cycles) and the filth that wants to own you.

Their excuse was that 60 days had elapsed since they charged my account even though they debited my account one month before the amount was due. I emailed them as soon as I realised what happened and only a few days past the 60 day limit. Yes technically it is my fault for not reading all the fine print, however I find it is very deceitful to automatically charge my credit card without specific correspondence and my specific acknowledgment to that effect.

I find it also disappointing that they would not refund the remaining 300 days of subscription. They claim that I received an email prior to being charged the annual amount but I could not find anything in my Inbox or in my Junk Email folder. Be aware of these sleazy tricks, I will never again purchase anything from McAfee because of their lack of tolerance and customer support in this regard.

I talk to a tech for about 2hrs and he let me know what is wrong with my computer and that it is slow and I need a tech to check it out about every 2 -3 month. That way they can clean it and it will run faster. They wanted to charge me 179.99 for one year and they can clean it monthly. I told them I do not have the money for that and I knew a tech in my town and she would clean it for 30.00. So they said they would clean it for 50.00 and I did not need Mcafee antivirus because I had defender. So I ask "Why did I pay for Mcafee last year when I didn't need it and now you charge me again for this year."

He said he would help me get the refund back of 23.99 and I would pay him 27.00 and the refund to clean the computer. I told him 4 times why would I pay my 23.99 and 27.00 to clean the computer when I can have it done for 30.00. I finally just type out that I want a phone # for Mcafee and I will refund it myself. That is what I did and I turned on my defender. He said that I need a tech to turn it on.

Apparently my McAfee subscription expired 150 days ago, which I'm reminded about constantly when I start up my PC, during work or just watching a film. I could live with that - I'm not that keen on being blackmailed into buying a product I don't want to use. Today, however, things went south. All of a sudden the Adobe flash player crashed non-stop, the screen would freeze or worse, shut down in the middle of a file, I was working on. (Losing all that I had been working on just now). So I gave in and paid the 30 US dollars - which in reality turned out to be 36 dollars - and now things are cool. For the moment. Now, I'm not an expert, don't know anything about apps, devices and so on, but I have this ugly suspicion that the problems I endured today was caused by McAfee. A device that came along with the purchase of the PC. End of story. I won't be surprised if it turns out that McAfee has charged me with the double of the amount I paid for renewal. So be it.

This is some sort of scam. When trying to use the keycode to renew from a purchased renewal card from OfficeMax, the website on the card will not take you to a download screen, as it says that it will. You are forced to on-line chat with techs or call. All will ask how old the computer is (Mine is exactly one yr old & had McAfee loaded at time of computer purchase.). Then, they want to "take over your computer" in order to help. No matter what McAfee site that you click in, wants this. When you call the numbers listed, same thing. When you enter your phone number, get all sorts of hangup calls from suspicious numbers that don't work. No matter where I turn, I am boxed in. Probably, to upsell me or sell my info. So, since McAfee won't allow me to renew without this scam-type hassle, I will get virus protection from another company. McAfee is not worth the headache.

Neither outstanding or useless BUT the main problem with this system is how difficult it is to get rid of the software or the company after you no longer need it or want it. I'd cancelled my 'auto-renewal' and eventually managed to delete the software from my system, a year later a debit comes out of my account. I ring up the US helpline (no complaints dept supposedly). Go on the website and turn off the auto-renewal. A year later, same again. Then, this year, again another £50 for a service I didn't want, need or in fact ask for. I complain to my bank as every time I check my McAfee account details, I'm NOT down for auto-renewal. I'd changed card details twice during this time, still manages to update whatever insidious payment method they have and take the money. £150 out of pocket AND NO USE OF SERVICE.

It is also extremely difficult to actually remove the software entirely from your system. Be very careful even with a free trial. While a friendly customer service, refused to refund full amount, even with evidence of no use of service. Up to 3 days for a call back from a non-complaints dept. Ten months later, I was billed for the following year which I had not pre-approved. In addition, I tried to negotiate a better renewal fee with them to keep renewal simple. I was cheated by McAfee in the name of thanksgiving rebate. I ended up in paying 59$ during this offer purchased at Frys.com. The fancy statement was they will sell the product for 59$ and will refund it later. They instructed us to send the proof of the purchase, duly filled rebate form etc. to a address. I properly followed the procedure and no update until April 2016. I believed McAfee was genuine and they won't trash their customers. When I started to track, the customer care updated me that the proof of purchase was missing from my original package. I believed they will keep up their promise and shared the receipt once again.

After a couple of months when I started to follow up they asked the receipt for one more time. Sent again, the response was as follows: "Dear **, Tracking Number: **. Thank you for contacting the McAfee Rebate Center. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Unfortunately this promotion is closed already and we cannot place any further modifications, we could not honor this rebate. We look forward for you participating in our future promotions. Thank you for contacting the McAfee Rebate Center. Your satisfaction is our priority! Have a great day. Angel **, Rebates Customer Service." Friends, please don't get trapped by such fancy advertisements and suffer like me later. These are all product selling techniques. They just randomly select few folks and honor their rebates but not to everyone. I know one other friend of mine who is also sailing on the same boat.

I had problems this weekend where McAfee Total Protection stopped Real Time Scanning my laptop. Every time I turned Scanning on, it turned itself off again. The McAfee help desk in India helped me solve this problem which was caused by the Microsoft update, KB3161561, released on 14 June 2016. However, in trying to diagnose the problem, we tried to re-install McAfee but it did not make any difference. Part of the clean-up process tried using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR) and McAfee Pre-Installer. MCPR worked OK but McAfee Pre-Installer deleted all the files on my desktop, my outlook personal folders, all my photographs and all my word and excel documents.

Yes, I'm using capitals because I am furious. Only after using McAfee Pre-Installer did I find reports of this program causing these types of problems. I HAVE NOW LOST YEARS OF DATA BECAUSE OF A BAD PIECE OF MCAFEE SOFTWARE THAT IS STILL RECOMMENDED ON THE MCAFEE WEBSITE. This is disgraceful and McAfee should remove it now before anyone else suffers as I have.

McAfee software scans came up empty. Called for support and was told that some unwanted programs were on my computer. If I wanted their help it would cost me another $179.00, on top of the $89.00 I just spent. One of the reasons I bought it was because it stated it protected me from unwanted software, adware, malware, and viruses. I spent hours on the phone and chatting with people I could not understand because their English was so bad. McAfee can go pound salt. Live Safe is totally ineffective and McAfee does not do as they claim in the ads. Junk!

I purchased McAfee Internet Security on 5-10-16 and tried to get it running. They had my account from a previous year, and every time I tried to log in to McAfee I got a message that my account was expired! I tried their phone support 2 times, and I could not understand the tech (he was from the Philippines), and he did not help me. I then tried their Chat system, but again, after almost an hour there was no solution. Finally I sent an email explaining everything.

Finally I received a telephone call from someone who said he was from McAfee, asking for my credit card and telling me that he was going to take over my computer for 25-30 minutes to fix the problem. I told him that I did not like giving my credit card info and have someone work on my computer for 30 minutes. I asked that they solve the problem in their offices and let me know when they did, but they refused. I then asked that they send me an email with instructions that I can follow myself, and he refused. When I told them that I would just cancel my purchase and use another security system the tech said "ok" and hung up.

I will not use McAfee again when they cannot solve a problem without going through such shenanigans! And I suggest that anyone who needs support from McAfee will be sorely disappointed. They should use English speaking technicians and make solving a problem easy for their customers, rather than handling problems as they did with me.

I can't begin to express in words how annoyed I am with this product. I purchased a 1000+ PC today and should have wondered why the salesman was so eager to sell me the McAfee LIVESAFE. I should have reviewed it first or asked someone who knew about computers what the product was like. 1st of all the installation process is beyond a joke. I had to contact their customers services to rectify it. I was put through to the Philippines and after constantly having to correct or repeat what I was saying, or asking her what she was saying I lost it and asked for a call centre in the UK. I was transferred to INDIA, which is apparently the UK call centre!!!

Yet again I had issues with constantly repeating myself and correcting the person on the phone but having no choice but to continue. I eventually get it installed via remote onto my desktop, only to find the program is now causing WINDOWS 10 to not accept updates onto my computer. The APP is on my phone less than 3 hours and its locked out! Took me an hour to get it unlocked. How do you access a pin via email when your phone is locked and that's how you access your emails!!!

Enough was enough so I contacted the refunds dept to get a refund. I shall try at extract blood from a stone tomorrow. I shall have better luck. This firm and this product somehow passed US and EU trading regulations (someone was clearly paid off) which is a mystery as now that I am looking at the reviews I wish I had never purchased the product in the first place.

My advice to anyone is stay well away from this company and this product. They use cheap labour in foreign countries with no call centre assistance in either the US, UK or Europe... probably their biggest market. Good luck to anyone attempting to get their money back. I rarely do reviews but this firm takes the biscuit. I shall go back to AVG, and LOOKOUT SECURITY for mobile. Way better even with just the free version.

McAfee DOES catch the worst issues however I'm still stuck on some sort of open internet. McAfee described on the Heartbleed app I can not find the setting as they say something is turned off and found no repair. Doing Google Search also with having to reset the phone and looking data you may need at a later time. ALSO I have a suspicion my phone service has been illegally paired with other phones. McAfee - a complete nightmare from start to finish and beyond. First - for any kind of support you connect to India. While I applaud these folks for speaking more than one language - something I cannot do sadly - their accents are thick, and they speak quickly. I found them very hard to understand. And I really want to speak to someone in America. I live and use my computer in America. I am always offended when I am connected to India. Aside from that, I bought the McAfee system, installed it and it promptly broke my computer. Windows icon would not open. Internet icon would not open. Internet froze.

They insisted it was my computer, but I had been working all morning without a single glitch. It is a new computer and it works great. It was the product, not my computer. I spent hours with them trying to fix it. Then I had to spend more hours on the phone trying to get a refund for the product price (the McAfee software was removed from my computer). Then more hours with a paid technician to resolve the tech issues. Then a refund for that because they could not fix it. I spent hours & hours & my computer and a friend finally fixed it. The computer is finally running again but permanently changed, not for the better. I NEVER devote time to reviews, but this was so bad I really had to write a review. McAfee never again.

Although I liked that it automatically scans all devices or flash drives connected on my computer, it still wasn't able to delete or warn me about the desktop.ini virus that came through one of the flash drives accessed on my computer. I now have some nuisance plaguing my directories.

Also, I love McAfee's safe site advisor. It was able to warn me about harmful sites especially those shared on Facebook. In sum, although I liked McAfee, I did not try to purchase it when the trial period expired. After reading reviews here for those who experienced purchasing it, I do not wish to go through the same trouble they've gone through especially that I'm not in the US where help support could be more difficult to seek.

In the email correspondence, he recommended that I call the customer service to get a full refund issued.

I called and had a completely terrible experience. I understood that the 60 day time frame had passed, but I did not feel like that I was properly notified about the auto-renewal since the email should have generated a kickback and the credit card on file was also expired. They did not seem to care and would offer any other comments outside the generic "60 day time frame." Pop-up says, "Contact Microsoft" and gives 1800 number. I researched number and it's a scam. I couldn't get rid of the pop-up, it kept reappearing and totally locked up my computer. I did a manual McAfee scan and McAfee said it was clean and secure. I called McAfee and they wanted $119.00 to provide Tech support. I said, "Then what does this total protection package that was $44.99 that I have cover?" McAfee said, "It only covers virus protection." I said, "Then what do you call what I have?" They said "it's not a virus it is a pop-up scam and your Total Protection package won't cover it.| I said, "Then why do you call it Total Protection? You are as bad as the scammers that put this virus on my computer" and hung up.

I never signed up with them, no purchases made, but they won't quit with the pop-ups, so every time I turn on my computer there they are. They don't take no for an answer do they? This makes me ever more determined to stay away from them, and after reading these reviews why is consumer affairs doing anything?

A "free" trial was offered for "virus protection." However when I saw that protection was not fully guaranteed I suspected that these McAfee people could be scam artists. Today I cannot get to use my laptop because they are forcing me to pay monies via credit card in order for me to use my computer. This company needs to be removed permanently off this planet for their unlawful activities. They are preying on hundred of thousands of individuals who are not technological savvy enough to get rid of their illegally created viruses that are created to con the poor and not so poor throughout the world. After so many hundred of thousands of complaints, these vermin still can't seem to go away.

When looking at the multiple, multiple complaints about McAfee/Intel, I have found myself unknowingly signing up for an 'automatic renewal'. Am I accountable for unknowingly not clicking the box to uncheck. Sure. But this practice by these companies is highly deceiving. Concerning, when I went to create an account with the BBB (Consumer Affairs), it is doing the same thing as these companies - It already has X'd the boxes: Subscribe to our Newsletters: The Daily Consumer - daily newsletter, Consumer News and Alerts - weekly newsletter. I am hopeful that the BBB will be a model for these other deceiving companies and to remove these filled in X boxes ASAP.

Further, I would like to know what is being done with McAfee/Intel. How come they have not ended this practice? PS, McAfee refunded only 1 year; I'm seeking more years: "As you requested, a refund in the amount of 85.81(USD), for your purchase of McAfee SecurityCenter has been processed. The confirmation number for the refund is **. Be aware, it may take 5 business days for the credit card or other electronic reimbursement to be completed. Please allow up to 3 weeks for refunds by check. Thank you."

Today I received a charge in the amount of $95.61 on my debit card to renew my McAfee Antivirus subscription. I had no prior warning. I contacted the company and my call was answered by a male of which I could not understand his name due to a very thick Indian accent. He indicated oh yes indeed I was charged for my automatic renewal. WHAT?!! I never signed up for an automatic renewal to which his response was "this is common complaint." I indicated I wanted this cancelled immediately and the charge be credited back to my card. Upon this request I was offered the renewal for under $30.00, "due to a special promotion." That infuriates me.

Basically they overcharge you with the hopes of no complaint. But then if you do complain they will provide the service cheaper, not only for the computer but all of your devices! Hellooooo McAfee/Intel Security... that is called BAD BUSINESS. Why would I continue with a company that initially tried to rip me off? I will no longer be utilizing McAfee or any other product tied to Intel Security. It is so sad what our society has become. Love/want of the dollar has become priority for most companies. Offer the least service for the most dollar - in the spirit of making the most profit and no concern of who is taken advantage of in the process. So utterly disgraceful.
