I purchased a vehicle in March and 1 month after I started having brake problems come to find out it was an oil leak. I need someone to contact me immediately. I’ve left messages and messages I’ve been told that the wait for my vehicle to be seen was months out. How is it possible to have your vehicle services in the condition!!! Spoke to the manager and explained the problem and she guided me to take my vehicle to the BMW since I had my brakes done there when it wasn’t my brake. It is a motor problem!!! I need assistance immediately!!!! Monica **. Horrible horrible customer service at the 13100 Gulf Freeway Houston, TX 77034. Waited over 50 min on the phone for assistance!

Decided to trade my car with CarMax and it has been the worse experience I've ever had purchasing a vehicle. Not to mention I still don't have the vehicle. This after spending the entire day doing everything that was asked of me. Only to find out so many errors were made on CarMax behalf.

If I could give this review zero stars I would. I purchased a 2012 Ford Focus with 50,000 miles on it last October. Nine months and 10 thousand miles later my check engine light comes on and my car starts accelerating on its own and skipping gears. The screen on the dash shows, "Transmission Malfunction Service needed." WHAT?
I contacted a transmission specialist and they notified me that year of Ford cars have a part that has been advised to be replaced. To only find out from several Ford dealerships and transmission mechanics that this particular part has been on backorder for the past four years. When I purchased this vehicle the salesperson Robert sure **'d his way through the sale sugar coating the entire process. CarMax already knew that they were selling me a faulty vehicle. My car is almost non-drivable now. I have been given a quote by a transmission specialist if the part that is required to make the repair ever becomes available at $4000.00+ for parts and labor. There is no reason that I have to pay for this repair when I haven't even owned this vehicle for a year yet. I am getting ready to return the contract and the vehicle back to CarMax Modesto and tell them where to put this defective vehicle.

Updated on 10/9/2023: This is an update to a previous review. When I returned a car to CARMAX on Monday 9/18/23, (because it wouldn’t start 36 hours after I bought it) I was told to expect a full refund in “7-10 business days”. It has now been 21 days and I’m still waiting. Worst car buying experience ever.
Updated on 09/20/2023: This is addition to a review posted on Monday 9/18. Just before leaving the Lynwood, WA CARMAX location Monday afternoon (9/18), I was told the cashier's check I had presented during the purchase “would be returned to the lender”. On Tuesday 9/19, I was informed by my bank that CARMAX had in fact deposited the check. Why would they deposit the check knowing I didn’t want the car?
Original Review: Last week I made a reservation to test drive a 2021 Toyota Highlander on Saturday 9/16/23 at 11:30 at CARMAX of Lynwood, WA. We arrived a little early and were directed to go look at the car before our assigned sales rep would be ready. Everything went smoothly until the sales rep went to bring the car up front for our test drive. She was gone for a while and then returned and told us she had to jump start the car because, “the battery was dead, someone had left a light on”. This told me no one had prepped the car before our arrival for a test drive that day. Why did we bother to make a reservation?
I also asked if the car just needed a new battery and was promptly told this wasn’t the case. Also, there were three maintenance messages still present on the touch screen of the car. They all dated from June 6th, 2023. When I asked about these messages no one was able to tell me what, if anything, had been replaced nor what the problem had been. It seems there are no mechanics on duty at CARMAX on the weekends.
The test drive went very well, we continued with the purchase and eventually drove the vehicle home. 36 hours later on Monday morning (9/18) when we tried to start the car it wouldn’t start. I called their service number and was automatically transferred to a towing service. 2 hours later a tow truck arrived at our house and towed the vehicle back to the dealership. I called a customer service number and was told someone would meet me at the dealership between 3:30 and 4:00 pm that afternoon. I arrived at the dealership about 30 minutes early and was greeted by a sales manager who claimed to know nothing about the car. I had spoken with this gentleman directly the day we purchased the car. I told him what had happened and that I would like to receive a full refund. I was then asked to have a seat in the waiting area.
After about 45 minutes I was handed a form to sign stating the amount to be refunded. I had placed a $6K cash deposit the day we bought the car. I was told I would receive a check for that amount within 7 to 10 business days and the cashier's check for the balance would be returned to my lender. When I asked if they could just write me a check for the deposit I was told, “We’re not set up for that”. At no time was any offer made to fix the car, replace the battery or consider another car of equal value.

I bought this car because it went through a 125 point inspection but after one month, the brake rotors were warped and bad. It is obvious they were patched as an inspection would have revealed this problem with the brakes, yet they patched it (resurfaced the brakes) in violation of DOT specifications. A month after I bought it the brakes were warped and shaking the steering wheel. The text number, which the sales associate THEODORE had been talking to me since I bought the car, went radio-silent as soon as I mentioned a problem. When I got home I called a different dealer only to find out I was within warranty on May 24th when I complained about the brakes, but not later when I complained again.
This place is a SCAM and sells substandard vehicles in need of repair that have been polished to make it look like it's ok until the 90 day warranty is over. I was scammed, subterfuged and redirected until it was too late, now they answer the phone and say, "Sorry we cannot help past 90 days." Complete sham, I am paying several grand to an atty to get me out of this deal so I lose 5k instead of 27k. Worthless service, worthless sales honesty and most of all, worthless vehicle they misrepresented. DO NOT BELIEVE THESE PEOPLE, take the 24 hour test drive and take it to a competent mechanic. Carmax will sell you a piece of junk and tell you it's a gem.

I financed the purchase of my car thru CarMax. I agreed to allow my credit to be run once. I qualified for financing but they tried to transfer my account to another lender and ran my credit over and over, hurting my credit score in the process. On another occasion I paid for a truck in full and drove it 25 days before returning it for a full refund. After transferring ownership back to Carmax, they failed to send it into the DMV for more than a year. I received bills and notices of delinquent title with penalties. I told Carmax who said it would be taken care of immediately but I received more DMV warnings and threats that the FTB could garnish wages for delinquent fees a year after I returned the truck. I was told they were short staffed and would need to get back to me. Very bad service.

This company should be out of business! I have never in my entire life had such a debacle and stress from trying to buy a vehicle. Ran my credit, approved for a truck, then they sold the truck out from under me and said that I have to get a different vehicle! Called several days and continued to get the runaround about what happened, they ran my credit again dropping my score and raising my approval % to 12.7 instead of prev 11% int. rate. and the down payment went from $1,000 to $5,650 on a $2000 more expensive deal! WTF, I will never deal with these people again and am writing every place online to forewarn others to NOT Buy here, we ended up getting a much better vehicle elsewhere and service elsewhere was 1 million times better than Carmax! They will ruin your credit and manipulate you to SELL you. That's it, otherwise they could care less about your business.

Buena Park CarMax. I reserved a car to purchase. I needed to obtain documents to bring with me asking with proof of insurance for the car I was buying. I had home into CarMax 4 or 5 times to let them know I was still buying the car and was obtaining the required documents. I was already approved for the car with $5000 down which included $3000 from a trade in. When I went to get the car they said my stea appraisal expired and they needed to appraise it again. This time they told me it had frame damage and it leaked which was a lie. I asked to be shown where the damage was or the leak and waiting for someone to show me. Nobody came and they locked the doors on me, they closed. Since the appraisal was half they had to rerun my credit for new terms. They didn't and when I called them to continue forward with the car they had taken it off reserve for me and reserved it for someone else.
I was ready to buy this car and had everything that required including I bought insurance for the car and they say bring proof of insurance. When I spoke to the manager Myra I got nowhere but hey blaming me for their mistake. They wouldn't reimburse me for the insurance I bought or she never even apologized for their mistake, instead she blamed me for lack of communication when I had been in there 5 times for the car. It was their fault they but my appraisal in half on a lie and didn't rerun u financing.
Now I'm out the cost of getting the car insured and a hit on my credit report for a car they gave to someone else plus 2 weeks of my time getting all the paperwork together. The sales manager Myra was unprofessional had an attitude with me, and blamed me for their error. I'm not the only one screwed out of buying insurance for a car and then selling to someone else. That's ok about the car, it had a tick in the engine when I started it and the sales guy Rick played it off as a cold start up. Really? I will be talking to corporate about this and getting my insurance refund. I will update my post with how that goes. Carmax Corporate # 18005191511.

So I absolutely loved my new Mitsubishi Outlander and my sales agent. It wasn’t until a week or 2 later that all hell broke loose. It started with a flat tire, then it lead to thieves tampering with my vehicle to the car running out of gas and possibly needing a jump. The RoadSide assistance agents were so worried about who should pay for what that they missed the bigger picture here.
After leaving me stranded all day (14 hours and counting…) The agent is now leaving me outside tonight in the middle of nowhere. They did not want to offer me a rental or loaner car even though it’s listed in my brand new extended warranty contract. They did not want to bring me gas from a Carmax repair facility without me paying for their mistake. (Mind you, I initially called for a flat tire. Not gas.) Ran out of gas as I waited 13 hours for service. And now the agents are leaving me outside in an unsafe neighborhood. No Uber home, no replacement vehicle (like they stressed at the time of sales), no food. Just left outside in extreme temperatures. My stuff along with the vehicle has been tampered with. I am exhausted, dehydrated and starving. I am also taking this car back so fast…. Lol Their loss. Worst experience ever.

Carmax is a complete scam - DO NOT buy your car through them. They offered me a 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage for $18,988.00 but when it came time to sign the paperwork the price changed to $35,000.00. I was told by 3 different sales people that my 18% finance fee would be $3500.00 but the paperwork said the 18% totaled to an $ 11,000.00 additional charge. How could 3 different sales people give me the wrong information. The worst part is I paid $400 to get the car insured, went through a headache to get this car registered with my apartments just to end up with nothing. Spoke to a manager named Neil, I asked for the guy's last name and he refused to provide it. Cold hearted and cruel behavior. This company is a straight up scam. A ploy to lure customers and let them think they are the best price in town. Shop around before going to CarMax.

I had a vehicle shipped from CARMAX in Ashville, NC. I paid to have it shipped on 8/4/23, the ETA was 8/7 to 8/13. It was supposed to be ready to test drive by 8/13 but did not ship until 8/8 and it was not ready to test drive until 8/18. The reason I was given was because it did not pass a quality check in which case 2 tires had to be bought and the license bracket was supposed to be put on the front bumper (the bracket was not put as I was told). After test driving I decided to purchase the vehicle (pending cleaning and taking care of some cosmetic things). I was told by the salesperson that the vehicle would be ready by Wednesday 8/23 but I informed her that I could not come back until Friday.
Now remember the salesperson told me the vehicle would be ready by Wednesday he 23rd and she even sent me a text that evening to let me know the vehicle was ready. I show up 8/28, Friday evening and the vehicle was not ready like the salesperson told me. It was not cleaned, the bracket was not put on and some of the cosmetic stuff was not done as the salesperson promised. So I'm waiting for 2 hours for a vehicle that was supposedly ready 2 days prior. Some scratches had to buffed out because it was not done, it had to be cleaned and the bracket had to be put on. All of these things were supposed to be done 2 days prior and the vehicle was put in for express pickup (which didn't mean anything). I got there for a 5pm appointment and I did not get the keys until 7:30. After all of that the low coolant level came on right after I left the lot. It was just one thing after another and I told Tina, the salesperson handling my purchase that I was never coming back to CARMAX Virginia Beach.

So far my experience with CarMax in Fairfield has not been good. I paid to have a car transferred from another state and received an email saying it had arrived. That's when the communication from CarMax broke down. I have called at least once a day to try to get an ETA on when I can test drive the vehicle. I am a serious buyer and ready to write the check. Unfortunately, this seems to be a very difficult question for anyone at this location to answer. I don't understand why they can't estimate the time it will take them to do whatever it is they have to do and let me know. They do not initiate contact with me and I wait on hold for long periods of time when I call. I understand this is a nation-wide business and they may not really care about the customer experience, but is it not good.
Update: Apparently CarMax doesn't care if you buy a car from them or not. When I called today to try to set a time to test drive (still trying! I was serious about this car but never expected to have to work so hard to buy it), the woman put me on hold for 15 minutes. While I was on hold I was looking at other cars from other dealers and I found one that I really liked. While I was STILL ON HOLD I sent a message to the dealer to see if the car was still there and they responded -- wait for it -- by asking me if I'd like to come in and do a test drive.
Just like a reputable successful car dealership should do (are you listening CarMax?). I test-drove the car and then wrote a check and bought it. I will not be doing business with CarMax and don't recommend that you do business with them either. When you experience how a real dealership works you see how poorly this place is run. How do they plan to stay in business if they can't get it together to sell a car to someone who really wants to buy that car!!! This woman (I wish I knew her name) singlehandedly cost CarMax a sale by being inept and poorly trained. And, apparently, no one cares. Oh well.

Carmax Garland Location: Goal was to purchase/ finance a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. Spent time with Emily, she approved my husband and acted annoyed most of the time she helped us. She said we needed to bring physical copy of SSC in and to pdf her copies of proof of income, etc. I asked her repeatedly if she could take copies of our docs while we were there, she said we needed to go home and do it ourselves (despite being told prior to bring/ provide docs at our appt). Next day we were calling to get the vehicle insured so we could complete the paperwork and were informed by 4 different insurance companies that Hyundai and Kia were uninsurable due to a very recent recall regarding their key mechanism and high risk of theft.
We called Emily and she said "Oh, I thought yall knew!?". My question is how are you all selling these cars having this knowledge and not being transparent with customers who are interested these cars? Instead, you waste client (and your own) time, because OBVIOUSLY you will never get the sale if I can't insure the car, bc to finance the requirement to leave with the vehicle is you must be full coverage insured...
Spoke to the Manager and all this lame could say was "we can't sour a customer against those brands, that is not what we do here". Mmyah okay so you would rather lose a customer for carmax and lose a sale for your salespeople that be transparent or caring and give customers knowledge they will need to know. So better in your eyes that Carmax look dumb than for a client to go with a car they cab actually buy? Get outta here! The dumb sales girl was like "do you still want me to hold the car for you?" No!!! I can't even buy it dummy, why would you ask that? So, will never buy from carmax again. Not worth the trouble.

#CARMAX bait and switch. Beware! #KMX. We decided to sell our company car since we hardly use it any longer. Had my operations manager get some quotes and decided to go local to the Carmax in Wayne. She conveyed all the information to them over the phone, including that the car was wrapped, and that it was a company vehicle. They Told her all the documents that we had to bring in which I did. Upon my arrival for my appointment I was surprised that they made me go to the bank and get a notarized letter that I was the owner of the company even though it was addressed in advance. Not a big deal.
I went and left the car there. At that point they had plugged everything into the computer, and I was told when I came back with the letter I would have to sign some forms and I would be out of there in 10 minutes. To my surprise the person helping me came back to the desk and I saw the quote was $8000 when I was quoted $12,400. Well, you can imagine my surprise. BTW we received two other quotes that were comparable.

So, this literally was going to start off as a amazing review, BUT! That has changed! I was referred by a few friends to deal with Carmax, they have great warranties, the prices are great, ya ya ya. I was in the market to purchase my 2nd Range Rover. I currently had/have a sport, and wanted to try out the Velar. Better on gas, smaller, cute, you know! I found a burgundy 2018 Velar S. Was nicely loaded, sexy, rode amazing...good price (not great), around 24k miles...about $51k. Cool...so I drove in from Charleston one day, drove the car...enjoyed it. Completed the application process online, downpayment, etc etc, drove back to Columbia to take delivery!
After all the paperwork was completed, I was escorted to the car where they had a huge Yellow Bow on it! Talk about make me feel good. Shortly after I found a few issues with the truck; warped leather dashboard, both headlights had cracks in them, 1 cracked taillight, missing cover for the trunk part of the truck, one key was broken, and I questioned the delay for the backup camera.
A large black guy came out after I showed the young lady who did my finance paperwork the complaints I had about the car..."Oh, Mr **, just bring it back in and we will take care of all those things! NP!!" "Sir, I am in the process of moving to San Francisco CA, and I want to ensure that I will NOT have an issue with this once I arrive? Can I not get the work done before I leave? No, I'm pulling out in 3 days, which is the main reason I'm purchasing a newer truck." "Don't worry about it Mr. **! Just have them contact us and we will approve it!"
I contacted the Carmax in Pleasanton, CA, escalated it to one of the managers...he would have to contact the Carmax in Columbia, NO PROBLEM! Now all of a sudden no one knows anything about anything! NOTHING! After going around in a few circles...there is NOTHING THEY CAN DO! Yes, it was my responsibility to get this in writing, but I also just assumed that they would have also written it down, or at least recalled it! And would have done the repairs.
This review is written a year later because, I just got an anniversary email for my truck! LOL...which now only have 12k miles more than when I purchased it, just got my first oil change...and those things that needed repaired...still need repaired! My hopes are, are that someone from Carmax will read this, hold this location accountable, and represent Carmax for what it stands for. When that happens, I'll add to this review, and tell everyone they made it right. But as for now!! GET EVERYTHING IN INK WHEN IT COMES TO CARMAX!!

Set up everything online with a rep was approved for Carmax financing, gave me a down payment amount. Sent me the breakdown summary. Took both of my jobs info. I had to pay 100.00 dollars to have the car shipped to the king of Prussia location. It was sitting for a while week. Sent in all my paperwork. Like I said, the rep lady Z sent me a breakdown summary of what I would have to put down and how much my payment would be a month. Sent me another email for me to upload to the insurance file trying to have me get insurance which was 412.00 down. Before I even seen the car in person. So I waited till the day I was at Carmax before to see if everything would be finalized before I spent 412.00 on insurance.
Thank goodness I didn’t get it and upload it because. I get all the way there and they talking about they can’t use both of my incomes, only one. So they run my credit again with only 1 of my jobs. All of a sudden my down payment is doubled miraculously so instead of 1396.00 down, When I had both jobs on the app now they want 3000 down, after they just put in my 1 job. Like they seen both of my pay stubs from both jobs and they thought they would be slick and try to get as much money out of me as possible. Don’t go to Carmax. Don’t ever get insurance on a car. Before you go there as they ask you, upload all this paperwork, proof of income and insurance. I got it cleaned and detailed myself. Week later I took it back 'cause the shifting. Got a 2020 Kona. Well it’s already been in the shop for repairs 3 times. It stalls while driving, stalled in intersection. Brakes and rotors had to be changed as well. Shakes bad while trying to pick up speed to merge onto highway. Took it to CarMax. It’s just got 34,000 miles so they said they won’t fix it. Take it to Hyundai dealership. When I bought it that was never told to me but anyway I took it. Got it back still doing the same. It’s in the shop 3 weeks now as I’m writing this. Hyundai dealership said no loaners. They stopped doing that. It was a lie, when I took it to be dropped off the guy said, "We don’t have loaners at this time." So I told him what the woman who made my appointment told me.
Anyway Carmax said they check every car and they have 36 or 38 stalls to do work. What the heck does that matter 'cause clearly they’re selling pieces of junk. My payment is 790 a month so now if it comes back still not fixed now what? It’s past the 30 days to return but still within the 90 days. I need an attorney for this one I think or just return the car and take a bit to my credit. Any attorneys who can help make them do right please call me. Janice **- Thanks

This has been one of the worst experiences of our lives. We hit a deer and totalled our car. Went to Carmax and were sold a Ford escape with a bad transmission. We immediately returned the car and were sold a Buick encore. The first week I noticed the car lagging and stuttering when accelerating as well as there was boiling hot water shooting into the passenger side floor board and burning my legs. We immediately notified the repair center and were told to bring it in. They claimed that there was no lag however they did replace the fan motor for the ac. Lo and behold still lagging. The pedal all the way to the floor and barely getting to 20mph in a solid 60 sec. We were told by a repair center manager by the name of Dallas that even though they couldn't identify what I was talking about to bring it back in regardless of when it got worse.
Fast forward 3 months, we now have a check engine light on and it is gasping and stuttering. We notify the repair center the same day the light came on. We also went straight to AutoZone to have the code read. It is a leak in the EVAP line. That means we are going through gas so quick it's costing hundreds of dollars. Back to the repair center where we are told they have to keep the car to diagnose the issue but will not provide a loaner car. This visit to the repair center is now number 4 and still no properly working vehicle.
We have children, I am disabled and have numerous doctor appointments, the owner works everyday 25 min away. We need a car. We were told it would be handled because we notified quickly. We were told by corporate that there are only notes from the initial visit but nothing on the numerous times they drove our car or the second time we brought it in for the stuttering. They didn't do the work. The dismissal of this company and the lack of accountability and compassion is astonishing. If you value any part of your sanity stay away from this company entirely. It isn't worth the absolute devastation they put their customers through. They lie, gaslight, deny, disregard safety. After this being the second car sold to us with engine problems I can positively say CarMax has zero regard for the safety of not only their customers but anyone else around any car they have sold being driven now.

My husband and I purchased a vehicle from CarMax of Renton in April 2023. We were given reports on the history of the vehicle--none of which mention any accidents or recalls. When I get up to date paperwork from CarMax regarding our sales agreement, an accident and recall appear. (3 months after purchase) I call the store and speak to a sales manager. He pulls up the history report from when we were there in April. He says there is no report of an accident. Yeah. That's what I thought too. I tell him to look at current AutoCheck reports. Oooh, there is an accident reported. He says he'll ask around and get back to me. He doesn't, though. I call back. I talk to a different sales manager. He tells me that accidents aren't always reported right away (on Carfax or AutoCheck). ??? Is that so??? This accident was reported 3 years ago.
I call different dealerships to get their knowledge of AutoCheck and reporting. No delays that they've seen. The most CarMax will offer us is an appraisal. We don't want an appraisal. We purchased it 101 days prior to this discovery. 1200 miles were put on the car. We want to void the sale. But CarMax argues that an accident wouldn't impact the value of the car. The information they gave us is what they had. Too bad for us. ??? Is that so??? We all know an accident DOES impact the sale of a car. Had I known this car had an accident in its history, I would never had bought it. How does an accident that happened 3 years ago not get onto a history report UNTIL the title goes to a different owner? Beware. Lying, shady, fraudulent business.

The only good thing about CarMax is the 30-day return policy. The first car I bought, the battery died after two weeks. Since it was under warranty, I wanted CarMax to take care of it. While I was waiting for it to be fixed, I found another car I liked. I paid to have it transferred and after it arrived, I found out it didn’t have all the options the listing said and the brakes squeaked/squealed. I think the 125 point inspection must involve standing in front of the car and counting to 125. Also, the first car I purchased— when it was put back up on the website the AutoCheck report listed minor accident damage from 2 years ago. That didn’t come up when I bought it. Save yourself a lot of grief, DON’T BUY FROM CARMAX!

Very good experience. 30 days return policy was the key for me to have a peace of mind. No price haggling also helped making the experience better, knowing that you are getting the same fixed price as anyone else. They were also nice to take care of some minor scratches and re-did the window tinting on the used car I purchased. I think most of their used cars also comes with new tires and quality check. Overall a very good experience.

They do NOT do any sort of good checking out of cars. You could get a lemon 50-50 chance. AND whoa to those who try to get money back, or exchange, or even get decent, reliable customer service! it doesn't exist. We had to deal with Lauren in the corp office. Yes even the corp office is a full on joke. Lauren arranged LOL for us to get a loaner car. My husband who bought the car was out of state on business. So he kenneled our 2 dogs up at our second home, bought a last minute flight $$$$, rented a car, picked me up and we went to get this loaner car. OH oh not there. The pick up location had no paperwork, and oh oh Lauren was out for the weekend. The day SHE set up this loaner!
She screwed us ten times at minimum! Incompetence, and then her people defended her??? They sold us a lemon whose engine froze (not from lack of oil) in the middle of a TX heat advisory, 7 miles from nearest water, in the middle of nowhere, they took almost 1 month to return our money when they screwed up so many times,. costing us well over $1,000 and we decided no more carmax. So we had to threaten litigation for monies lost to get our money back. Even then. Omg nobody knows what they are doing. They sent our car to Kia for a new motor per warranty? Even tho I knew the 10yr 100,000 mile warranty is good for original owner, since they sell used cars? I was not that!
Duh! How do they not know this.? Caused a weeks delay, then the loaner car **, the run around for another week until I took over. My husband is much too kind. I am not! Screw me once and we are done. CARMAX screwed us 20 + times. Dont do it! I am serious. Look at the reviews. Even here they have a 1,7 rating out of 5? Why would you even consider carmax! Why? LOL.

This company is a total joke! I ordered a $50k car that was listed with several options and features. Once the car arrived, my family realized many of the clearly advertised features were not present. We went back to the location to explain this car didn’t have several of the clearly website advertised options, and was told not to worry “we will make it right”. So, I won’t go into the extremities “I can if needed”, but they quickly helped us find a replacement that ‘hopefully’ was as described. Finally the replacement arrives, and now they cannot give it to us because they ‘lost/don’t have’ the title and they cannot transfer the replacement ‘slightly less expensive’ vehicle. Now we are told to wait ‘an undefined amount of time’ while they search for the ‘lost title’.
So they sold me a $50k Lexus with many advertised options not present in the vehicle, the front window was chip from the inside dangerously so, and the windows were tinted on top of the factory tint so dark that you couldn’t see ‘even during the day’. New car comes, lost title; call center, transferred, told they needed 72 hours to ‘clean the car’ to finally find out they didn’t have a title to sell THEIR CAR, and now I’m just waiting and waiting. 1:07 ‘hour and 7 minutes on hold’. Was told "We will work on it" without any clear definition of time available ‘we are working on it’. Keep in mind that this car was paid for in cash! No financing, just straight $47,*** whatever money. WHAT A JOKE!!!

Carmax (Irvine) provided us with a car that cannot be legally registered in California. On December 1st, 2022, we bought a Jeep Wrangler for $35,722. The dealership assured us that the permanent plates would be sent in the following weeks. However, after waiting for five weeks, we contacted them to inquire about the status. The representative promised to check and call us back, but we received no response. Two weeks later, we called again and were informed that the car had been registered in another state, requiring a VIN verification. We took the vehicle back to Carmax for the verification, and they mentioned it would take a few weeks to receive the plates and registration.
Fast forward four months, and we hadn't heard anything from Carmax. Unfortunately, two of our staff members were pulled over and faced the threat of impoundment due to the vehicle's invalid dealer plates. We reached out to the CHP, who confirmed that the dealer plates were no longer valid, rendering the vehicle legally undrivable. Despite making multiple calls to Carmax, the representative finally advised us to return the car because it could not be registered. This resulted in us spending five hours at a CarMax dealership (Ontario) for the return. Selling us a vehicle with these issues was an unacceptable action from Carmax.

Cars I choose in the store parking lots aren’t available they he said. All the sudden the ford expedition, the tahoe prices jumped. I had 36k to spend. Now the expedition and the tahoes are 37,999 & 38,999. They just want e to spend more out of my pocket. I refuse and I left their 4 DMV CARMAX, That 999 and state tax and warranty totaling $4000.00 so if you see a car in Carmax for $20,999 don’t think it’s $20,000. It’s actually 21,000. Now don’t think it just $21,000. Now add state tax $1400.00. That’s is now $22,400.
Now don’t think is done. You would think a 22,000 36 months payment can have 100000 miles or 36 months warranty. You know you can buy new car for $20,000 but carmax Tricked you. They have warranty for 90 Days or 4000 miles or you buy $3500 warranty for 3 years. Now the total car price is $26,000. Very dishonest and tricky. If you have 20k go to the other dealership you want. To buy ford go to ford dealership. You want to buy toyota go to toyota dealership. I just gave the money back to the bank. I am going to save my money and just buy me used car from Facebook marketplace for $4,000. I’m glad I did buy one from carmax. They were going behind the money I borrowed from my back. I suggest being very careful when purchasing a car from Carmax. My business purchased a Ford F150 with relatively low miles. A service code (serious issue) popped up within a few days and I took it in to Carmax under their warranty (after waiting weeks for an appointment), but they found nothing wrong. Then we got the code again and took it in again (after waiting many more weeks) and they told us they replaced some parts. This happened a couple more times. Then we got the code again and Carmax couldn't get us in for a number of weeks, so we ended up at another mechanic who we paid to make the repair rather than deal with the Carmax warranty.
Our mechanic thought that Carmax hadn't actually made the repair they said they did and they hadn't even done an oil change (filter was absolutely black). The truck was out of commission for about half of the last year trying to get this taken care of...a huge issue for our company as we had to rent vehicles. We are looking for a Toyota Prius c. There are four trim levels of the Prius c. Carmax has a car in Georgia that they claim is a Prius c three. We live in Massachusetts, so the car needed to be shipped - for around 600.00. Carmax has a good warranty period, but you cannot retrieve your shipping costs, once the car is shipped to your area. That's all reasonable.
Before agreeing to having the car shipped, we called their sales department to ask questions about the car. A Prius c three should have a navigation system. It's a standard feature. We were told that this car does not have a navigation system - but it's still a trim level 3. How could that be? The sales manager said that the previous owner failed to have the navigation system installed. This just doesn't make sense, because it was supposed to be a standard feature on a Prius c three. I suspect that the car is really a Prius c one, but it cannot be a three. This matters, because the average price of a three is higher than that of a one or two.

I purchased a flawless (looking) one owner Lexus GX460 from a Carmax in the Dallas area. Before purchasing, I ran a VIN check for this vehicle on the Lexus owner's site and found it had been meticulously maintained at the same Lexus dealer since original purchase with no issues of concern listed in the maintenance records, so I felt pretty good about moving ahead with the purchase. I realized there could still be issues with the vehicle since it had just over 100k miles. A few days after purchase, and after a heavy rainstorm, I noticed a musty smell and found the driver and front passenger carpets were wet and mildewed under the floor mats. I crawled under the vehicle to inspect the floor pans then looked up at the rear of the engine and saw evidence of a coolant leak where the pink coolant had dried and crusted all over the transmission housing, but it was also wet from fresh coolant. These were two leaks that had been going on for some time.
I removed the large plastic shroud at the front of the engine bay and found the coolant reservoir and power steering reservoir both empty. It was obvious Carmax had not checked these fluid levels prior to putting the vehicle on the lot or even after I had purchased it. So much for their touted “extensive” 125 point inspection. I immediately returned the vehicle to Carmax explaining the critical nature of these issues, and they very quickly accepted the returned vehicle no questions asked and refunded my money within 30 minutes. I was suspicious, so less than a week later I went online to see the same vehicle for sale at the same price at the same Carmax location. I know that specific coolant leak is typically from a valley plate seal which is a very time-consuming and expensive repair, so I very seriously doubt they fixed it. (Many GX owners know the pain of this specific leak.)
I feel bad for the next buyer of this vehicle who will probably discover these issues down the road when it’s possibly too late and they’re stranded on some Texas back road after the engine has overheated and the temps are 100+. A professional post-purchase inspection would have found these issues within 10 minutes, but I doubt Carmax even knew about these obvious issues or cared enough to not to sell it if they did know. After many Carmax purchases over 25 years, I’ve made my last Carmax transaction. Carmax only looks at the vehicle like most customers on the lot would look at it: “it drives ok, interior looks great, body looks great”. I may have been born at night, but not last night—I know used car sales have always been like this. The issue here is that Carmax advertises their extensive inspection protocols to provide some peace of mind to the rightfully doubting customer, but I believe the thorough inspections to be deceptive.

I drove over an hour to the Springfield, MO lot and when we had just gotten started, they told me they were having trouble matching me to a financing company. I had a trade in and cash for a down payment and they kept telling me I needed more. After explaining for the 10th time I didn't have more than what I was offering and I was threatening to walk out, they "conveniently" found me a financing company.
About 3 months into driving my car and made 2 payments, I received a letter in the mail from CarMax saying I needed to find additional financing since the financing I had gotten had decided to deny me due to "poor credit" or return my car. When I called customer service to find out what was going on they acted like they had NO CLUE as to what was going on. Nothing was in my notes, nothing was on my account for lack of financing. In fact, my lien holder was listed on my account as full financing for my car.
Another 3 months go by, I've made more payments, and I get another letter in the mail threatening to repossess my car. This time stating for lack of registration. I called and explained the situation of my divorce. My ex-husband was not paying his property taxes on his vehicles that were in both of our names and I had to come up with $2,000 for property taxes before I could complete the registration. They reassured me that they understood and they would make a note on my account.
Another 6 months go by, my car had been registered for several months, payments made, I put my tax return towards my car payments to get ahead, and a tow truck is taking off with my car. I call my lien holder to ask what was going on, they said my car was paid off. Carmax had bought my car back from them! I call carmax, I am on hold for at least an hour, customer service doesn't have answers. They say they would transfer me to the financing department. They don't know anything. Transfer me to the Springfield, MO lot. They don't know anything. I get back in touch with customer service and they finally transfer me to the business office in Virginia. They tell me they have been trying to reach me by mail for months. LIES!
They tell me they repossessed my car bc my lien holder was not on my title. I email them a picture of my title AND registration proving my lien holder was on them both. They change their story! The mileage had not been submitted correctly when I registered my car months ago. A mistake, apparently, the DMV had made, but I had to suffer the consequences for it! They won't give me my money back and the car I traded in over a year ago is gone. Carmax expects me to get an entirely new auto loan for my car and pay sales tax. Again! None of this was my fault, carmax sold me a vehicle with a bad title and expects me to buy it back so that I can go through the trouble of "fixing" the title. I have hired a lawyer and I want my tax return back that I spent paying ahead on my payments. DO NOT PURCHASE A VEHICLE THROUGH CARMAX. THEY WILL ILLEGALLY SELL YOU A VEHICLE THEN BUY IT BACK TO COVER THEIR OWN SKIN.

The vehicles they tried to sell me were horrible and the customer service is always dry, rude and unpleasant. I always come prepared with all my paperwork, IDs, insurance, etc., but it never seems to matter.
Today, my wife and I went to CarMax in Duarte, CA and was offered $2,000 less than their original quote and was told my car had problems that simply doesn't exist. The staff that assisted me was dull, inexperienced and scripted like robots including the manager in the business department who was very rude when asked specific questions. Funny thing is we paid for the car having that package when we bought it in June 2022. I left Carmax that day without trading because I knew what they were doing.
My wife loved the Mercedes and yes, it was actually priced well even though almost everything they have is priced too high so we went back the following day and did the deal because the Mercedes was the car she wanted. I told them I knew they would price our Lexus at $37-38000 and sure enough it is now listed at $38,998. For any dealer to make an $8,000 profit on a vehicle is unreal. In addition I had a BMW X3 transferred in a few weeks ago and the history showed it had 2 minor accidents in 2 years (it was a 2021). Before it arrived it didn't seem right so I ran a CARFAX and found it had 4 accidents and 2 were not minor. Needless to say I walked away from that one but they did end up selling it to someone else who didn't do their homework like I did.
Carmax in the past was easy to deal with and conducted business in a proper manner but after these experiences I have no faith in them and will never deal with them again. I have sent friends to them in the past and some have purchased cars from them. Never again will I deal with them or refer them to anyone. If you are thinking of dealing with Carmax do your homework going in or chances are you may regret it later. They are no longer the company they once were.

I've purchased and traded in 4 or 5 cars at CarMax and my last experience was the worst, and definitely the last. They may be the # 1 auto trade in place, but their customer service is down at the bottom. The car I ended up purchasing is filthy, they never properly detailed it, and it has warnings from the Navigation system they never cleared. It's been over a month and I still don't have my refund for my CarMax. They had a good thing but it is now gone. They suck and you will read this, go anyway, and regret it. Promise.

I never thought I would buy a car online, but when I totaled my car just before Christmas, injured my shoulder and couldn't drive for one of the two weeks my insurance provided a rental car, found myself in the middle of a full scale blizzard and no dealerships within 60 miles of me had any inventory in the two cars I was interested in, I searched Carmax and found the exact same car I had totaled with a few modifications (better color, cloth seats - which I prefer for dogs) and it looked brand new, I was hooked.
The $250 shipping charge was a hiccup that almost kept me from getting the car of my dreams. It's well worth it to have the HUGE inventory to search. The pictures, car history and 30 day guarantee convinced me it was worth it to give it a shot. I will never buy a used car any other way again. I cannot speak for other online dealerships, but my experience in Fort Wayne was amazing. They could not have been nicer or more accomadating. I LOVE my car. To get the same car that I had with less miles, a prettier color and NO dog hair (yet!!!) was worth the extra money I had to put with my settlement. I look forward to driving this car for a long time. I recommend Carmax without a smidge of hesitation.

They sold me a lemon--it's been to the auction 3xs and it's 2yrs old! Look closely at the alignment of the vehicle BEFORE leaving. Check the number of owners and how many times it has been to auction on your paperwork. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Absolutely horrible experience from the 1hr hold time and kids in the background when you call Customer Relations to no availability in repair shops (within your 30 days) to a Sales "Manager" who gives you all the reasons why YOU don't want to return the vehicle (only trying to wait out the 30 days). It started with an 8hr bus ride to pick the vehicle up and "oh it's just cold" when it sounded like a semi-truck at start-up. Wind blowing directly on me from a replaced door and burning smells on the drive home. I was terrified I wouldn't make it. Finally, I get a good look at it and the front is unaligned and two windows are after- market.
Clearly, this vehicle has been in accident. It spent days in the "body" shop, and I've been missing all the shifts from my 2nd job. And guess what--Yep, I still hear and feel wind and even Stevie Wonder can see the door is NOT aligned. So WHY, oh WHY CarMax would you return the car to me like this? Next, I schedule an appointment for service. No problem I'll wait 3 days. The same day I get a call from CarMax saying go to the other location they have openings. That's odd because I called there already and they don't have openings until next year. Get to the advised location only to be told "they should not have scheduled you without calling us first, you're the 2nd person they did that to today". I call Customer Relations from the parking lot. I sit there 4hrs while they "work on a remedy". Only to come back and say, "This may not be resolved today. You can't have a rental unless we diagnose the car first (odd, didn't have that problem last week)."
I politely drove to the original location and guess what? I received a rental with no diagnosis (full of animal hair-but I appreciate them vacuuming it when I pointed it out) and a referral to Nissan. Now, why couldn't they have offered that option in the first place? I guess the same reason several managers at various locations said "you don't have to drive all the way back to Minnesota to return it, we do this all the time. If you lived in FL would they expect you do that?" Apparently not for ME since the "Manager" I just spoke with who offered no apology for 30 days paying for a car that I couldn't drive says basically screw you spend 6hrs driving it back because we have that local power. I bet they're counting on me being over my mileage. How, it's been in the shop most of the time!

Carmax is selling warranties under false pretenses. My friend purchase a Ford Fusion from Carmax with MaxCare. Six months into his loan the car shut down. MaxCare repaired thousands of dollars worth of damages. That was back in June 2020. Now we are in 2022 and as to date CarMax Warranty AKA Fidelity has repair $9,000 worth of damage, and that not due to any accidents of any kind, come to find out that the extended warranty that was purchase up to 125,000 miles has a Cap and will not repair any damages that is more than the car is worth.
How can Carmax salesmen sell a warranty to people under false pretense. IF YOU HAVE MAXCARE LOOKING INTO YOUR WARRANTY, I'M SURE YOU THOUGHT YOU BOUGHT A WARRANTY THAT WILL COVER YOU FOR THE LIFE OF YOUR LOAN OR BY MILEAGE, IT'S A LIFE AND A SCAM. LOOK INTO MAXCARE WARRANTY FOR YOURSELF.

I took it back and they tried to tell me my 90 days were up already and I had to pay but I called right on the 90 day. They said an extra day had to be counted because of how many days there were in that month. If I bought it on the 26th 90 days would hit the 26th mark which when I called in was 90 days later right on the 26th mark. I felt like because I’m a woman they sold me this lemon. My car made a clicking sound when I first started it. I thought it was normal but several people told me it’s not supposed to make this noise. They supposedly had fixed the leak but two weeks after I got it back it began to leak again. The service department told me to take it to a Chevy dealer.
I called Chevy dealer. Chevy dealer said, "Don’t let CarMax fool you into paying a deductible for something they never fixed correctly in the first place." Once again I’m a woman. I’ve had many cars and it was always a easy process but after dealing with the CarMax In Nashville Tennessee it makes me just want to buy my future cars with cash only and just pay for the whole car out of pocket. Well on last Saturday Dec 10, 2022 I was approved to get a car from carmax. I was approved by having to have a co signer. OK cool so… Myself and my co signer had to submit documents which we done. After submitting all my documents then I got an email everything we submit was cool so Boom! I get another email stating we need to submit more documents. I submit those documents then get another email stating we completed everything. The process was just repeating itself.
Meanwhile the car I wanted was in Georgia so I had to pay a transfer fee of $100 to get the car to Nashville. I done so after the agent told me I was approved and a finance company had approved me with a down payment of $2200. So a couple days went by. I’m like, "Why is it taking so long?" I called and asked the agent. The agent stated to me, "Oh they might just want a bank statement and another utility bill." I’m like, "What? I just sent all the required documents. I’m tired of this process. Why do I have to keep sending all these documents?" So that call got disconnected. I called back. I told the agent everything that was going on. She’s like, "I don’t understand either why you have to submit a bank statement just disregard that message" the agent say to me. So now I’m confused. She telling me one thing when the email is showing me what I should submit.
That whole day I talked to agents from carmax. Each agent gave me a different answer. Nobody was on the same page so I get a text stating the car is ready for me to pick up but then later I get a call from a carmax agent stating carmax won’t be able to get me a car after all the documents I provided and had the car shipped to Nashville. Yeah I was pissed. Then the next day I went somewhere else to search for a car the guy told me CARMAX! RAN MY CREDIT 10 TIMES AND THAT MADE MY CREDIT SCORE JUMP REALLY LOW. This was some ** so now I have to get my credit back up because of carmax. I wouldn’t tell anyone to go there 'cause they tell you you’re approved, make you do all this paperwork then have you ship a car to you. For you not to get the car is **. Willing to get this but when I arrived at their showroom and talked to one of their customer representatives, the whole game changed in less than minute. My APR increased and down payment was incredibly high. And they don give a ** to online rates. And their customer service was so bad. It was in Dulles, VA. They didn't bother me to help get the car. They were like, "We really don't give a damn about customer, if you need car get it as under our term right away."
I was willing to pay more down payment but the sale person/associate weren't really help me get through. I decided to not spent my time and money on that crap. My story is long, just don't buy a used car to be cheap. Go get a new one -
2. Insurance is higher on used car!
I first bought a car in 2006 a pt cruiser, they convinced me to buy an extended warranty, I did and boy that saved me. That car was a lemon buy. I drove rentals through out my ENTIRE loan. I ended losing the car. Waste of money. CARMAX inglewood. I then bought a 2008 BMW 328i, still had a manufacturer warranty and that saved me from the oil leak problems. CARMAX Buena Park referred me to any BMW since I didn't purchase an extended warranty and said I would be covered with BMW due to a manufacturer warranty issue. Car accident got rid of this one. Insurance paid it off.
In 2012 I purchased a Mercedes SUV at the CARMAX Torrance, worst of all it was on a friday night. NEVER BUY ON A FRIDAY NIGHT. Their dumb guarantee ran thru the weekend and I was NO LONGER ABLE TO RETURN IT. Let me tell you what happened. THAT CAR TURNED OFF INTERMITTENT, WOULD NOT COME ON AT TIMES AND A TIRE WENT FLAT -_-. Had to buy a new tire to drive it 18 miles to the dealer to have it returned, after going back and forth with the manager we were told they could buy our car back and the car had depriciated, lost my $9,000 down payment. YEP, my entire downpayment down the drain. Because of the pt cruiser experience, I sold the car back to them. This experience hurt me to the core and I was so young, early 20s. Me vieron cara de menza. I wish someone told me I could have sued them, but I was stupid.
After this experience, I went to Cerritos Mazda, bought a brand new SUV FOR A WAY CHEAPER MONTHLY. NO DOWN! Paid that car off and now I own a 2nd new suv. JUST RUN. Here is my review from 2012 yelp carmax torrance. I put $9000 down payment on the car to be left with about $19000 after financing. Maxcare expires at 3 years or 100,000 miles and my car was at 59,000 miles point of sale. We took the car on a test drive and there was no problem. The ride home was hectic, we heard a swoosh noise and since it was a weekend, the service department was closed. We waited till we set an available appointment during the week to bring it in.
Aside from the swoosh, car would pull to the right; an alignment problem. The A.C lights kept flashing and no cold air would release. A tire went flat during the first 3 days and ended going to just tires and purchased a brand new tire for $200. Also during the weekend the car had check brake light, check right light, check left light, and brakes made a small noise. We took a photo and SENT IT TO OUR SALES REP. We made an appointment to see the service department only for them not to duplicate some problems onsite. WE drove 16 miles from home to waste time and gas.
Any how as Kirsten the consultant stated, "You guys bought a great car, you just have minor cosmetic imperfections, the noise is obviously coming from the tires, and that's normal, and the rest is just cosmetic imperfections that can be fixed." So the car was with them for a about a week and a half. They ordered the part from mercedes, the tech had to install the part ended up breaking the frame so they had to order the broken part, at this point I wanted to return the car but we were past our 5 day RETURN POLICY. When the car was ready, we took the car back home, another 16 miles, and the swoosh now was still there.
Brought the car back, There was an obvious alignment problem that was blamed on tires, ended up replacing all tires, and said they would place silent tires so the noise would minimize. They said the car needed new brake pads in the back, not in the front, because the front ones were brand new. At this point I am questioning their inspection and technician's work. After the tires were replaced we were told that the alignment WAS off (after Kirsten the consultant insisted there was no alignment problem) and that they would take care of it.
After it was "fixed" the car was brought home only to find a new problem, A KICK, the car started kicking as you started braking. We took it upon ourselves to contact mercedes and find out the 2006 ml350 series had a known defect with the camshocks and transmission yada yada yada... only to find out that I'm almost 30 days into this car. We brought the car back in and asked for another consultant for help, but right before this happened an hour prior to this we felt we were done with this car.
We decided to get the car appraised, and the car had lost value. 2,500 to be exact. We were going to get 22500.00 and we were going to lose out on the 9000 down payment. VERY DISAPPOINTING IN THIS BAD ECONOMY. We then explained our feelings about the car and were told that we were past the the 5 day return policy and could not return the car. We explained what mercedes explained to us, and left the car there for the weekend for an available tech to look at the car on monday. As that week came by, A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WAS DUPLICATED, along with that problem there were other little minor repairs needed.
AT THIS POINT we have wasted time, mileage and gas. We have not been able to enjoy the car at all, not even a complete week. I am very disappointed at this whole situation. The most annoying part was when the first consultant would state we saved you this much money by you purchasing your max care... UM HELLO, WHY IS CARMAX SELLING CARS WITH PROBLEMS??? Their answer to the inspection standard is every used car has its defects, it's not a brand new car. I have bought a brand new 2005 honda civic and at its 100,000 miles it has I'VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM!

Let me tell you this was the worst car buying experience I’ve ever had to deal with in my life. My father, as well as my sister, had purchased a car from CarMax and they had no problem. Well let me tell you going to Carmax is the same as going to a regular dealership. They will either try to finance you or they will reach out to other banks to assist you. My situation was different. CARMAX did not want to finance me through their corporation, but they found another loan company so I paid for shipping which is nonrefundable from the car to come from one location to the state that I was living in. They told me once the car got here, they will call me to come take a test drive and do paperwork.
Well that did not happen, instead they shipped the car to the dealership. That was not close to me which I had requested and they never notified me and they submitted my information to other banks that I didn’t ask for a prequalification loan. So they sent me letters in the mail. Now I’m still checking and the car has been transferred to two other dealerships further away from me. I never got a call or anything except a letter in the mail stating that CARMAX auto finance did not approve my request. The other financing company who was going to approve me and review my terms and conditions did not contact me. As for CARMAX took the initiative to ship the car somewhere else for another customer. Also, I did not get my refund back because they don’t give out refunds for a car that you pay for shipping which can range from $99-$1499 but they already told me I was approved.

So today call my wife and tell her the new battery I bought was too small and shorted out several fuses and that I would have to pay 1026 dollars before they could fix it. Mind you I have a extended warranty and Volkswagen warranty and they are trying to blame me for blown fuses so as to not have to fix my car. I'm very dissatisfied with CarMax at this point. The only highlight of this review is that I bought an extended service plan with MaxCare. Now, I bought the car back in December 2021, and in mid-January 2022 the car started making a squealing noise and a burning oil smell inside the car. The transmission was not operating correctly. So, I took the car back to CarMax and I had to leave the car there for a week. They did give me a loaner vehicle which was uncomfortable to drive. So, I left the car in front of my house and used my wife's car. Just imagine you buy an SUV and after the first month, the SUV started squealing loudly waking up your next-door neighbors. That is an embarrassing moment on its own. Then to have to wait one week just to find out they didn't fix the issue with the squealing.
The next morning, I recorded the squealing noise again and sent the video to CarMax to Albert. I think Albert was the head of the repair shop at that time. I waited a day for him to respond. He never responded and when I called down there, they tried to give me the run around by stating Albert was busy with other customers and requested that I call back at a later time. Well a long story short, I didn't actually speak to him until three days after the video was sent. I ask him did he receive the video and view it. His response was, "Yes I did and could I bring the car back in." He stated that it wasn't making that noise when it was here. I stated to him, it was making that noise upon me picking the car up the first time after the car was supposedly being repaired. The only reason I did not bring it back in on that day was because I was due back at work. Long story short, it was the main belt that had went bad, so they replaced it.
Mind you this started happening after the first 30 days after purchase. The transmission remains to be an issue and now the burning oil smell is back as of October 2022. My advice to others is, take the car to a repair shop within the first 30 days and pay them to look over the vehicle of interest. That way you get a second opinion about your car and what you decide based on what your mechanic say. Take it from there because you still have time to return the vehicle to carmax within 30 days (I think mileage matters too. Ask the carmax salesperson to show you in writing the guidelines for returning the vehicle). I wish I would have went to the mechanic. Don't make the same mistake.

Being nearly 70 years of age it should come as no surprise that I've purchased more than a dozen cars for personal use over nearly 5 decades providing me with significant prior buying experiences. This one is the worst. I've never purchased thru Carmax previously but friends with a couple who have purchased thru Carmax twice in Atlanta, Georgia and recommended the company. So I thought I give them a chance. After browsing the online site and doing online research and driving a rental car of the same make and model I decided to take the plunge and give them a call. The car we desired is a Cadillac XT5 and Carmax has one on its lot in Ft. Lauderdale.
Carmax's online information regarding the car met our criteria. Little did I know at the time this information was a lie and the company and its employees knew it was a lie. Speaking with a lady identified as Cindi, a asked several questions regarding its condition. She informed had not incurrme that a Carmax employee would personally inspect the car for interior stains, damage and smoke or pet order. Also they would inspect the exterior for any damage and then report back to me with their findings.
An hour later I received a return call stating that an employee at the Carmax dealership in Ft. Lauderdale had personally inspected the car after my call and found no interior damage, no smells inside and no external damage. I authorized shipment to Jacksonville Florida and paid $99. I was told the car would be reinspected once it arrived and then I would receive a call to come to the dealership. I received a text from Carmax in Jacksonville that the car had been inspected post its transport and car had not been damaged in transit.
Three days later I arrived at the dealership to inspect the car. As I approached the car, from 15 feet away I immediately notice numerous spots on the car's black hood. Initially, thinking they were water spots. Looking closer, it turned out there were a dozen or spots on the hood as if someone had take a fist full of grave and standing above threw the gravel on the hood. Large chips of paint missing. The Carmax rep who walked with me up to the car, stated "We shouldn't be trying to sell this car." I refused acceptance of the car. No supervisor or manager approached me to apologize for the misrepresentation.
So to recap I was lied to about the car's condition by no less than five Carmax employees at two locations as well as their public online listing. They did not refund the $99 I paid to have the car transported. My first-hand experience with Carmax proved to me that the company is in an organized and management approved manner systematically lying to customers regarding the condition of their cars. You be the judge but for me and my family we are done with Carmax.

Purchased a car the beginning of August. Against my better judgement I agreed to use their "deal" where you sign up for their financing and then find your own and switch to that. I called my bank up gave them what information they needed and they took care of the rest. Over two months later I start receiving calls from the finance department saying my payment is late. I find out that the agreement they made with my bank required them to change the title and send it to my bank before they would send the check.
It took over 72 days for them to perform this title work and now they're placing a negative remark on my credit for refusing to pay on their finance agreement which was invalidated when they signed the agreement with my bank. Now I will have to go through the process to dispute the remark and potentially continue having to deal with their finance department for a car that is not even being financed by them. Do not use CarMax period. A company that is willing to do this to a customer is not one that deserves business.

After we went through the painstaking process of filling out a credit application in order to move forward with the process, we then paid a deposit to secure the car and have it transferred to our local store. We waited patiently for a whole week for the car to arrive, but never heard a word, no call, no email, nothing. I called to inquire, got a "uh-oh" then placed on hold, then was disconnected TWICE. No one tried to call me back, even though they had my name and number pulled up. They wanted to pass the buck and let someone else deal with my issue. Finally, on my third call, and after begging not to be placed on hold, I was informed that "I" had cancelled this order. I DID NOT CANCEL THIS ORDER.
As it turned out, the order had been cancelled the very next day, and I've been missing out on good deals for a whole week, all the while CARMAX is holding on to my money, and probably with ZERO intent of ever reaching out to me. Oh, and by the way, THEY confirmed that THEY cancelled the order. Now someone else has already taken the car that we had made a deal and put ink to paper. What a DISGUSTING car sales practice. They won't change, because they don't have to, but I hope someone else can read this and save their hard earned money and time. Buy from someone else, not a business that will cancel your order to flip the car for a higher price behind your back. It was easy to figure out, as the car is still listed online at another location for a higher price than I had agreed to. Confirmed this by a VIN search. DISPICABLE.

CarMax refuses to refund my $250 Reserve vehicle payment. First part of August 2022, I paid a $250 prepayment fee to reserve a car and have it transferred from Wichita to Memphis for purchase. The Rep repeatedly stated that my $250 deposit would 'Reserve' and transport the vehicle. I was emailed an online link and I completed paperwork, including all my contact info, home landline phone, cellphone, email, etc. Via email, I was provided confirmation of my successful completion which stated vehicle would be ready for my inspection by Sept. 1. I received multiple emails referencing delivery, financing, trade-in, etc. However, I never received any communication via email, voicemail, caller ID'd phone calls, or ID'd texts stating vehicle had arrived and available for pickup.
During the final week of Aug., I repeatedly phoned Carmax and was told multiple stories, including, vehicle was still in transit, it had been sold, it had arrived and was being prepped, etc. Finally on Aug 31 it was determined vehicle had already been sold to another buyer. I called the local Memphis Carmax office (area 901) and was told I was speaking to rep in Memphis. I later discovered all phone numbers go to a national switchboard and you could be talking to be anyone in the world. Through my multiple calls during the month, I discovered you cannot reach anyone in the local office. I repeatedly requested local contact information, valid local phone numbers, manager names, anything... But representatives would never provide any of this information. Via phone, there is no way to speak with anyone at the local branch.
I left countless messages to have someone call me back through the course of the month, never received a single call back. No one ever made any effort to resolve my issues with my reserved vehicle, explain why my reserved vehicle was sold before the tentative arrival date or to offer a refund of my credit card charge. I work in a sound restricted TV studio that must remain quiet. I get 50 spam and robo calls a day. Phone must remain on silent and I cannot answer immediately. I cannot return calls unless caller leaves voicemail and/or message or at least is identified thru caller ID.
Over the course of the month, no voicemails were ever left by CarMax on my cellphone or home landline phone. No messages were ever left on home phone which I check thoroughly, or on cellphone voicemail. All calls and texts made from CarMax are made from an unidentified caller or identified as spam. With the vast quantity of unidentified spam and robocalls and text I receive I cannot possibly spend hours returning and I did invite calls messages texts, automated recordings Etc.
I have an 800+ credit score and have done business with CarMax multiple times over the last 30 years. I refuse to be cheated, ignored, and treated like an annoyance. Carmax's new business model has ruined all purpose and advantage of doing any business with them. Their deception, misinformation, and run-arounds are obviously intentional and they have done nothing but given me untruths and made no effort to contact me to discuss or refund my charges.

08/26/22: Paid $199 to have a 2014 Porsche Cayman S (WP0AB2A89EK190214) transferred from Kansas City, Kansas, to Birmingham, Alabama. Listing did not mention or picture any significant damage to the front end--although I did locate an additional damage record using CarFax that CarMax's history documents did not mention. Waited over a week for the car to arrive then drove two hours to Birmingham to see/purchase the vehicle. When I arrived I instantly noticed front end damage and nearly peeling paint on the front bumper in addition to a smashed fog light/grille. Once again, CarMax's post-delivery "quality check" made no mention of this nor the salesperson I spoke with numerous times before traveling to pick the car up.
I asked if I could take it to a shop for repair and they said it would have to be repaired "in house." No thank you. And makes me wonder how many repairs are done like that to their cars that don't get reported to CarFax or Autocheck... I don't know if this sort of thing is indicative of CarMax as a whole, but I can tell you my experience was awful and I cannot recommend dealing with this company. They did refund the transfer fee--which I appreciated--but I should have been made aware of this issue prior to traveling over to see the car. Especially for a $50,000 vehicle I was purchasing. Completely unprofessional and a complete shame that this happened. Going to try another retailer moving forward.
08/27/22 Update: Salesperson, Steven Puckett, called to discuss the matter. He said he didn't answer me last night while I was dealing with the issue with another salesperson because he "maintains a work life balance" and was "not going to lie, went out" drinking. He said the proper procedure is to take a test drive and then have them repair any minor issues or damage observed. I'm sorry, but repainting an entire bumper and replacing a smashed light/grille is not minor. Especially if it affects the value of the car, which this does. Do NOT go to CarMax. I have NEVER been treated so poorly by a business before.

I will never purchase a vehicle through CarMax again. I bought a Chrysler 300 from the Spokane location. Right away there were problems with the seat belt alarm not turning off and the horn not working, which shows me they didn't do the 125 point inspection they claim to offer. Issues were fixed at the dealership. Drove the vehicle home. After a week a terrible grinding noise started. I called the office and said I wanted to ship another Chrysler up from Utah to replace the one I purchased. My predicament was that I work at sea and was leaving in two weeks. The dealership assured me I could have my wife do the vehicle exchange as long as she has Power of Attorney (which she does) and pay $300 to have the vehicle shipped to Spokane. Paid the fee and waited a couple days.
I called the dealership after they processed the payment just to confirm again that my wife would be able to do the exchange. The dealership then told me they were wrong to have told me she could pick it up and I didn't have any other options. They did cancel and refund the shipping cost. At this point I told them I would just bring the vehicle back for a full refund and wish I had. After discussing our options and our lack of another vehicle we decided to schedule an appointment with our local Chrysler dealership for repairs that are supposedly under a dealer warranty, plus we paid for the MaxCare protection plan. I called the Service department at the Spokane Carmax and was told as long as they are an ASE certified garage all the mechanic would have to do is call with the repairs and total and they would pay for it no problems.
My wife took the car in yesterday (it's been sitting in my driveway for almost two weeks because the grinding is so bad she's scared to drive it), the mechanic looked it over and came up with a relatively short list of things to fix on it, including a completely deteriorated heat shield that is causing the grinding issue, plus some electrical issues and a replacement of the broken skid plate. Now Carmax is trying to say the dealership is trying to upsell them and they don't want to cover the costs for repairs. It's completely ridiculous.
I literally had to make a satellite call from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to the Spokane service department only to be told they are having a hard time deciding what the can pay for. I explained to them I just paid over twenty thousand dollars and they need to make a good faith effort to honor the warranty. I should not have to pay one damn dime out of my pocket but it looks like I'll likely have to pay for the repairs. Car has been sitting in the garage two days now awaiting some type of approval from the service department manager at Carmax. Meanwhile my wife is stuck at home with no vehicle. Absolutely ridiculous for a company to treat someone this way. I normally avoid writing reviews, however if one person reads this and can avoid the headaches and disappointment I suppose it's worth it. Cheers!

Finally, ** from the Business Center spoke with me (I was told he was the head Manager there). ** blatantly said they would not remove the Dealer’s Inventory Tax and that every dealership charges this Tx. He didn’t seem to care how I felt and said they wouldn’t remove it. I was disappointed that he could not escalate this to have it removed. Customers who decide to purchase from CarMax need to be aware of this tactic to charge the Customer Non-Mandatory fees like this. I have bought many cars over the years with CarMax and written good reviews, however due to a business model change, I will probably never do business with them again. I decided to upgrade my suv and got a good offer from CarMax. Based on the offer, I found another suv but had to pay the transfer fee from a neighboring state. This used to roll over into the car purchase but now is a convenience charge. I offered to go pick up the car but was advised that it would be less hassle to have it shipped due to registration logistics. The very next day I received an email stating it had shipped but there were no more updates for several days. It actually looked like it was sitting at my local store but I’m not sure where it was because the sales guy was vague when I asked him and it appeared he had no better idea about where it was than I did.
After a week my appraisal was about to expire and I reached out again only to be told it was in post shipping inspection. So I called the “local number” only to end up speaking to apparently yet another remote employer/manager who told me the issue was the title was missing. He set up an appointment to take my car in for a reappraisal and to at least look at the car I had never seen. We drove the 45 minutes to the dealership only to be told that they can’t do a reappraisal until after the 7 days and that we could not see the car for “safety reasons.” The next employer then gave the reason the car was not ready as it needing state inspection and that it was not the title issue we had been given 1 hour before by a manager.
We were then told we were basically dumb for relying on information from “call center employees” that we were forced to speak to when you call the local number. Which is probably the main reason my yearly car purchase will change to another vendor. What company reroutes local calls to a call center that apparently cannot explain process at its dealerships. We were actually told that the call center employees are unaware of store policies.
I’m still debating canceling the purchase but I’m waiting to see if I feel differently about this experience. As of now, I have no faith in CarMax and if it’s this hard to buy a car, what will happen if I have an issue with it? I left my water bottle at the store and the call center had to find someone at the actual dealership to get my water bottle. If you are going to do business with them, I strongly recommend only doing it in person and find a car actually on the lot. My past purchases have not been this much of a hassle. My next purchase will not be from CarMax unless something changes.

They have been told to only allow customers that are going from Carmax check to only open account and not cash the check. One way or another one institution or the other. Bottom line they're going to try to pinch your hard earn money no matter what, and that's to add insult to injury because the majority of vehicles that they are selling are close to 100,000 miles which means that at some point during the first year, year and a half you're most likely gonna have to start investing in fixing manufacturing flaws.
Also the price you see online it's nowhere near what it really it's going to cost. A car I wanted was 19k and filling in with information they ask to see if you qualify or pre-qualify. It brought it up to 22k, once we got to the dealership it turned out that Carmax wasn't the one to finance but another finance company which was giving me a whopping 28% interest rate and jumped the car value to 40k and the vehicle was defective having acceleration problems, and what sounded like catalyst issues. A Big Big Deceit, the service it's outstanding, smiles everywhere, fast service and great sales people. Some can sell ketchup to someone wearing white gloves. There was a need for some cosmetic repairs and some safety items including a malfunctioning seat belt, worn tires that were not street legal, and malfunctioning blind spot indicators. They're happy to sell you a car and tell you there is a 90-day warranty. I spent a month trying to get hold of a service supervisor for the repairs. I called and no one in their service dept. would answer the phone. I tried to leave a VM and a message said a message could not be left since the mailbox was full. This went on for 1 month. I asked for a service supervisor to call me... never happened. I stopped at their location 5 times to speak to someone.
Their service dept. is a ** show. I went to NTB. They told me the oil was dirty and hadn't been changed in at least 4k miles. I then went to MB and they told me 3 of the tires are so worn they are not street legal. I finally realized that Carmax did not care and were not going to stand by their so called 90-day warranty and I repaired everything at my expense for $4k because my family's safety comes first. After spending at least an hour on the phone with financing and sales, at 11:15AM on 6/15/22 (+24hrs later) I was informed that another customer was in store and purchased the vehicle at the same time as I was going through the process of reserving it.
This made no sense as the store where the vehicle was located didn't open until 10AM. The reasoning for this excuse was that a reservation email doesn't mean the reservation is confirmed, it only means that you requested a reservation, which may not be processed for several hours after the request is made. Long story short, this is an unacceptable customer experience and is misleading to allow customers to seemingly complete a reservation online only to have it mean nothing if Carmax cannot confirm any details for several hours.

I rated this company very low for the simple fact that during my car buying experience with this location 6375 S Semoran Blvd Orlando FL 32822 with the salesman, **, the Manager ** when I picked up my vehicle on 05/21/2022 was with the Retail Service Contract that no one cared enough to explain to me and go over every detail of that contract with me prior to my purchase and pickup.
Now all I am being told is about the 7 day return or the 30 day, well that is not my issue here nor is it something I want to do, my problem here, and everyone that I've tried to get a better understanding of why do they feel that I should be fraudulently made to pay for a used vehicle twice the price cost of that said vehicle, which after 72 months I will have paid over $36,000 for a car that only cost $17,548.99 at the start all because of low credit score, that does not matter, how can you legally charge double for a car that can be paid off in 4 years, versus 6 at the price the car is not even worth. I know people that I have not paid that kind of a price, and even with low credit score for a brand new vehicle and to date, everyone that I speak with is glossing over the real fact of my concern and just keep telling me to bring the car back.
I need my vehicle to get to work, grocery shopping, pharmacy to name a few, my question and concern is how can you as a company that claims to care about the customer, make the car shopping experience less stressful when that is further from the truth. Being that I have dealt with CarMax years ago and brought a vehicle that I do not ever recall being treated in this manner, what I feel is that CarMax and the financing company American Credit Acceptance blindsided me and sold a car, just to make commission by any means necessary, without care, to the customer who lives on a budget of which I made that clear at the start legally do this, this APR is 26.66%. It is ludicrous to do something like this, nothing to mention, unprofessional, unethical, and unfair trade business practices. Credit Acceptance makes money by charging dealers large fees for providing financing for cars.
The problem is, these dealers would have to advertise the price of the car at much higher prices than their competitors are doing online, so they do not advertise the price that they would actually charge. Instead, what usually happens is that a buyer's finds a car they like online, with a good price, and they arrive at the dealership. After their credit run, the finance manager usually either (1) explains that due to financing through Credit Acceptance, there are large bank fees that have to be passed on to the customer, and that will cause the price to increase; or (2) the finance manager does not tell the buyer of the price increases, and just puts the increased price on the sales and finance paperwork without telling the buyer. And all of this is how I feel and although I purchase this time, I do not feel that I will ever deal with CarMax and its shady practices again.
I am reaching out to the Attorney General office and the Consumer Financing site also to voice my concerns. What would make this situation different from me is to re-do the contract to reveal and therefore make it where I am paying for a vehicle once, not twice. Between the increased finance charging and the terms of 72 months and what they are charging me is not right and I want some answers. I have already read, made myself heard when talking to others about this company business practices. When I contacted ACA on 05/27/2022 Tameka ** is the representative that I spoke with after I was not getting any where with CarMax was that ACA did not place that High APR of 26.66%, CarMax did and it seems that every one is simply passing the buck and not yet explaining my concerns here, how would you feel if this was you.
I am a 1 person household, living on a budget of which I clearly explain at the start but that fell on deaf ears, all the salesman cared about was making that commission and sale, bump the fact that this is overwhelming for the customer, whom they claim to care about. Most car buyers who finance their used car with CAC have a low credit score and a lower income. Because of this, dealerships, salesmen and finance managers often prey on these buyers. These buyers are often taken advantage of by being told what car they can purchase, what price they must pay, the interest rate they must pay, and are often forced to purchase a warranty. Because these buyers have fewer options of where and what to buy, they are victimized by predatory dealers who know how to take advantage.
Dealers CANNOT increase an advertised price to pass along Credit Acceptance bank fees or finance charges that are often thousands of dollars to customers, which cause the price and financing costs to increase significantly, sometimes by over $100/month. It appears and I've did my research about this that American Credit Acceptance charges the dealership a large bank fee, the dealer was passing the bank fee or finance charge onto the buyer. Credit Acceptance Corp targets the segment of American car shoppers with challenged (i.e. sub-prime) credit. The challenge is this:
(1) the number 1 goal of a car dealer is to sell a car(2) the number 2 goal of a car dealer is to sell the car at the highest possible margin
Many buyers trust that the friendly finance manager will be honest and put down the price that was advertised or that was already discussed. However, that is rarely the case. Considering the interests of the car dealer and how most car shoppers get their loans, no wonder Americans are overpaying on their interest rates, right? More so, I feel that and I alleged that American Credit Acceptance made unfair and deceptive auto loans, including placing the blame of all this with CarMax dealership. I am personally taking a close look at this industry and we will not allow companies to profit by violating our laws and exploiting consumers.”
Also, borrowers were subject to hidden finance charges because of which the company’s loans exceeded the usury rate involving this high APR 26.66% and want me as a consumer to just accept the fact that my credit score is low, yes I know this, and it can happen to anybody, we all go thru certain things, but that still does not give you the right to sneak it in on me and make me feel that this reason justifies the fact that you are scamming unsuspecting hard working consumers like myself and it just some how goes away, well guess what, that is not going to happen with me until I get and see some changes with this contract, this deal is shady at best.
This deal is indeed nothing short than deceptive lending practices and because the customer needs a vehicle, they are taken advantage of. I will like for someone to come clean, be professional about this and make sure to explain how is charging double for a vehicle in price, a used one at that, just because of a challenging credit score, place yourself into my shoes. This experience has been a nightmare to say the least and I will not ever deal with CarMax again and I wish for everyone to know how I was treated and I see clearly thru what happen to me for I am no dummy about this.

Please consider twice when choosing to do business with this company and this location specifically. I will not document my experience in details as it was one of the worse customer experiences I have ever had in my 62 trips around the sun. If I could give negative stars I would. Situation: Selling my car to them via online quote. I setup an appointment (arrived early), had all the documentation and nearly 6 hours later and I swear 10 different people, I finally was walking out the door! Staff: All seemed friendly but no one and I mean NO ONE took ownership of my visit, leads me to the process....
Process: On a 1-10 scale of bad to good -1000. I was handed off multiple times and each time I had to go seek out someone to get an update. Too many hands touched the process and the communication to me was, well, non existent. When I tried to track down the "last person" who I talked to, they were either nowhere to be found or left for the day.
When I thought it was on the last person, we were reviewing/singing the last documents and behold, they were paying me 10K more than they should have (they had the pay off amount wrong). After being the 5 hours I almost just ignored it and was going to take the money.....but, being an honest person, I could not do that - so back to the drawing board, and I was delayed again. Now, one would think they would have "thanked me" for catching THEIR 10K mistake, but no one person said thanks, in fact the last person I was with, when I stated I was not falsifying anything/fraud and could have walked out the door, she said and I quote "that would not have been your fraud, it would have been ours"...what???
So I decided to reach out to the corp office to let them know and well, the local office must be following the corporate "example"....They replied, did not even thank me for the 10K catch.... This was the best they came back with.... "I promise you that I will share your experience with our senior leadership teams so that we can make sure we take this feedback into account and provide it to the right teams to make sure that this does not become our norm."
I waited a MONTH to see if "senior leadership" would reach out, you guessed it, crickets, so I let them know (after a month) I was going to let the world/social media know and warn anyone I can to NEVER do business with this company, unless you want to waste hours of your time needlessly and get very frustrated, even when you "follow them" in their ridiculous "process".

I graciously need some advice. In August 2021 I bought a car from Carmax Germantown. We have absolutely love the car and I was going to give it to my daughter. I paid half down and financed the other half. The only problem is that a month after I bought the car I expected to get the new license plate that I had purchased. When I called, they said they couldn't get the license plate because I had transferred the car from another dealership up north and for some reason, the papers were not signed off on correctly and they didn't know when they would be.
I was sent another drive out tag and every month I heard the same thing. Now, we still have a drive out tag on the car and I am still hearing the same story that they are still trying to figure out why I can't get the car registered. I have talked to numerous managers including the store manager to no avail. My dad was in the car business for 40 years and he said this should not have happened. Unfortunately, my dad is in a nursing home in Nashville so he can't really help me. Does anybody have any advice on what I should do? I'm am not familiar with how to handle this problem. We really want to keep the car because my daughter loves it and ultimately it will be her car. However, I'm uncomfortable with paying on a car every month that I'm not sure I will get to keep. My next stop is to an attorney.

I didn't believe the offer and almost changed my mind thinking that there would be a bait and switch once I got there. Or at minimum, try and sell me one of their cars. In about an hour I was out of there with a check in my hand in the amount of the promised quote. They didn't try to sell me a car or offer less, once I arrived.

Within two months the car care was returned three times with electrical and mechanical problems. I asked to return the vehicle back within the 90 days guarantee, however, every time I was assured it will be taken care of and will ensure a proper repair, of course, no rental car while the car was back at its position.
The fourth time we were approaching the 90days, the brake system lockup completely, and could not move the car. Multiple tow trucks attempted to pick up the car from my house without any success. On the 7th attempt, two trucks DRAGGED it into his truck by force. Asked to return the vehicle, and the answer was it passed 90 days. The car stayed in the shop for three weeks and was repaired with a full guarantee that it was checked and up to the standards. Two weeks after a check engine light comes up, contacted CARMAX again and their answer was we have to contact the manufacturer.
I gave up and asked CARMAX to buy it back and they offered $18,000, a loss of $8000 within a few months. Finally, I managed to sell the car to AutoNation for $20,000. I asked CARMAX to return the extended warranty and they offered the amount of less than $600. No customer care, no liability, very clever on taking your money. It is a highway robbery at best. Be careful and do not trust them. This is the absolute truth and felt obligated to share and possibly prevent another victim to fall into the CARMAX trap.

The tech would not touch it after discovering the oil was filthy and there was an oil leak that had been there for a long while the plastic cover thing was saturated. We drove straight to CarMax and they told us they could schedule a diagnostic but all parts and labor would have to be paid by us even if we bought the car this way. I purchased a 2018 BMW X1 in July of 2021. In April of 2022 my brake light came on, so I took my vehicle to a trusted local European mechanic to replace the brakes. Upon their inspection, they found the pads were actually brand new, but had been installed incorrectly the last time they had been changed. I went back to the SLC Carmax to inquire about work performed prior to my purchase, and they informed me that they had done x,y and z.. One of those being the brakes had been replaced. I explained to them that their mechanic had installed them incorrectly, provided the paperwork from my personal mechanic and requested I be reimbursed for the labor I was charged, since it was a mistake made by Carmax. Two weeks later I received a call from Carmax stating they would not reimburse me b/c it was passed the 90 day warranty. This was an error made on their part, their employee made this mistake and I had to pay for their incompetence.
I am extremely disappointed this company doesn’t stand behind their work, own up to their mistakes and honor the customer. The blame was put back on myself, saying they didn’t know what I had done to the car since I purchased it in July, but please tell me in what world does someone go out of their way to have brand new brakes taken off, then put on incorrectly, and then have a mechanic correct it, just to try and create issues for themself and Carmax. Ludicrous. I trusted that the vehicle I was taking possession of at the time of purchase was in good condition, and trusted Carmax to know what they were doing enough that I didn’t have to seek a 2nd opinion on said work within 90 days of purchase.
After this experience I would never do business with them again, nor would I ever recommend them as a reputable dealership to anyone I know. However, if you choose to, please have your vehicle inspected by a 2nd or even 3rd party within 90 days of purchase to double/triple check their work b/c obviously they too believe their own mechanics shouldn’t be trusted.

The manager then has the sales associate ask me to give them copies of my cancelled payroll checks. I provided check stubs but they wanted me to ask my employer to give me cancelled checks to give to them. After I went back and checked why they needed all this additional information, I found that they had my annual salary at $750. At that point I understood why the lender asked for additional information.
However, no one has reached out and even said sorry about the mistake. I went to Carvana and they verified all my information and I'm done. I then was approved for financing. Upon finding a vehicle I wanted to buy, I paid the $899 shipping charge to get it to me. It was then that they wanted me to fill out the form and upload pics fo my trade-in. It came back with a $18,000 offer. So once they got my non-refundable $899 payment to ship that vehicle, suddenly they pulled a bait and switch in the middle of this transaction. I immediately sent a text to stop the shipment and to cancel the deal.
The person kept refusing to cancel the shipment by various tactics to stall around saying they will contact their supervisor, failure to respond to my texts or calls, and simply stalling. They knew that once that truck shipped, I would be stuck with either making the trade and suffer the new low ball offer for my trade in, or be out the $899 for shipping their truck up here. I spent the entire day frantic and doing everything I could to get them to stop that truck from shipping. Finally I called to the Carmax that was shipping it and stopped it myself. The department blows hot air. I was attempting to transfer title to another state as a new resident and part of that required Carmax finance to notarize a loan servicing out of state form (Missouri). I called them to find out where to send the form and I sent it via snail mail. After several attempts to contact them during next 3 weeks they said they had not received it and that sometimes the mail room gets backed up. This was their excuse for 3 attempts and then I started questioning their perseverance and lack of motivation to solve this issue. I then paid a one time fax fee to fax the document hoping that this avenue would provide a mechanism for them to respond quickly. I followed up yesterday on this after having faxed it the day before and they told me they had not received it and that it would take 1 to 2 days to get it into the system and to call back.
This lack of accountability and follow thru merits zero rating in my opinion and they haven't resolved this at all nor do they have a way to email the form to them and one department customer service not knowing what the other department (title department) is a black hole. There needs to be care taken to resolve rather than the blame game. The joke is that I completed the survey twice on the phone call only to have the same customer service rep call me and she said, "Is there anything else I can do for you?" I was told initially that I could purchase their warranty after purchase but now that there is an issue, now I can not get it. I am stuck with a possible repo on my credit because I can not get to work because I do not have a vehicle to drive to even pay the note, but the cost is around 6 grand. I contacted the service department and all I got was, "See what your lender can do to facilitate the return of the vehicle." No I want you to fix it, because where am I going to get the payment for a down payment on another vehicle.
I have been told nothing but lies and getting the run around and unreturned calls. I do not wish to speak with customer service, I kept asking for the president or someone. BEWARE! Experian auto/accident report is not accurate when given with the sale of the car. I bought a Mercedes E400 coupe from the Roseville branch. At the time of the sale, I was given an accident report from Experian that showed 0 accidents. A couple of months after buying this car, I didn't feel right about it, so I pulled up a CarFax report. Sure enough, there was a moderate accident to this car. The front, left and rear had been damaged. I brought this to the attention of Rob ** one of the salesmen there to forward to his manager. I didn't get much of an answer, except "I sent it to my manager." I didn't hear anything, so I called them and spoke with Zach a manager here, asking what he can do to take care if this, since I bought it, not knowing it was in an accident. He said to come down and he would take care of it.
I advised him I moved to Southern California. I told him to contact the CarMax in Palm Desert and he said he would send them an email about this. After spending three hours with them, I was told that Zach told him to handle it the way they want. They didn't resolve the issues, instead the salesmen James tried to hold his laughter when I expressed how upset I was. This dealership should have taken the car back and try to make it better. Instead Zach was pompous and did not help and I should have been told weeks ago that there is nothing I can do. I purchased a 2019 Toyota Sequoia a few weeks back. The engagement with the sales representative was positive overall. However, there were a few issues that were rather frustrating. Issue #1 - the advertisement for the vehicle indicated that it came with new tires. The OEM tires are Michelin LTX A/S (original equipment). Yes, the spare tire on the vehicle was indeed new (had never been used). The two tires on the rear of the vehicle were the Michelin's but had approximately 50% tread left. The two front tires were indeed replaced, but not with the original equipment. Instead they were Fortune Tormenta H/T tires (very low quality). Driving at 65 MPH causes a vibration in the steering wheel.
It was such a long process at the Carmax Norcross GA location that I drove home instead of trying to deal with it for another however many hours it would have taken me. I took the vehicle to a local tire shop for balancing the front. After approximately 15 mins on the front tires, they were put back on the vehicle. There is still a slight shake in the steering wheel at approx. 65+ MPH. All the tires on the vehicle should have been changed (apart from the unused spare) for the same type. We have a mis-match tire set, with poor tires on the front. Honestly, quite poor IMO.
Issue #2 - A few weeks after purchase, our bank calls us to tell us that we've missed a payment on our 'van'. We advised that the vehicle was traded in to Carmax and payment should have been made. We contacted Carmax... They informed us they had "just sent the payment" and it should be there shortly. Why do we need to deal with this sort of nonsense? Carmax was indeed paid on time. Payoff on the 'van' should have occurred in short order. The bank indicated that there was an interest charge, which we declined to pay as we didn't own it anymore. Goodness.
By the way, there have been three transactions in our family in the past two months with Carmax and payment of payoff from Carmax to the bank has been late on two of the transactions. To avoid customer SAT issues, Carmax needs to improve their customer service greatly. They also need to not install poor quality tires on vehicles to save a dollar. They need to honor their advertisements and put all new tires on their vehicles. It's a shame to have to write this review, however, it needs to be done rather unfortunately - Andy

My Fiance and I went into the Dulles location to purchase what was listed and advertised as a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Long Range priced at 43K. We opted to Finance through CarMax and purchased the vehicle on March 18th. Because we live about an hour away from the Dulles location and the vehicle was given to us with a 47% battery life, we decided to stop at a supercharger station on the way home. Much to our surprise, we found that the Tesla we purchased was not long range at all and had a max charge of 180 miles. The following day, we returned to the Dulles location and spoke with the manager Si. Our expectation was to receive a comparable long range model and it was our feeling that CarMax should honor the price we paid considering this was not at any fault of our own. Not only was the vehicle listed online as long range, it is also what appeared on the vehicles sticker (see images provided).
During the process, it was evident that Si was aware that he and his staff were in a precarious situation and assured us that some people were going to be "dealt with." After what felt like hours of lip service and beating around the bush, we were essentially told by Si that the only compensation they could provide, is waiving the shipping and transfer fees of another Tesla model. This provided us with little to no solace as $250 was not worth the time or the cash deposit we put down on the vehicle. We were informed that we would be responsible for any cost difference incurred outside of the shipping and transfer fees. As previously stated, our financing was through CarMax so at this point we were stuck. We reached out to corporate several times but were unable to come to any solution. As such, we opted to move forward with another Tesla Model 3 Long Range priced at 50K located in California.
We adjusted our financing accordingly and purchased the vehicle the morning of March 23rd. We were informed that delivery was scheduled on April 6th. Just a moment ago, we received word from the California location that another customer reserved the car that mind you, WE ALREADY PAID FOR! We were informed that should the customer opt to purchase tomorrow, we'll have to find another car. Additionally, we were told that the owner of the CarMax location reserved the right to deny our financing and had the ability to prioritize local sales. Even after agreeing to purchase another model at an additional 7K over what we originally budgeted for, we are STILL without a vehicle. We have reached our wits end with the absolute recklessness of CarMax and their higher ups. We will never conduct business with this company again.

Terrible customer service. I found my dream car on the web and paid for the transition to Houston from the other city. I waited 2 weeks for the car to arrive and one more week to get ready to drive. I got my appointment to buy it. When I went there, they said they already sold it to another customer. I PAID FOR IT EVEN IT WAS NOT READY FOR SALE IN ADVANCE. They made me wait 3 weeks and sold it. They even did not bother to ask me. They did not let me know that they sold the car before I go there. They want me go to the dealer so I can buy another one. I am extremely upset. They don't care about the customer they only care about the money they will earn. Not recommended at all. They don't deserve any trust! Period.

My fiancé and I have looked at cars, different ones to see which fit best for our little family as we have a infant now! We thought we found the one, everything was reviewed, we got text messages saying that everything was approved and “good to go.” Until we go THE DAY OF and spend 3 HOURS! Just so they can read over everything over and over to tell us that we need more of a down payment. THIS IS YOUR JOB!!! You let us go a whole week thinking this car was ours and just like that you told us no?? You should be ashamed of yourself.

We purchased a used Buick Regal from Carmax a few months ago and it’s now obvious that it has mechanical issues. The vehicle would not start not once, twice but three times within a 2-3 week period. I was able to get it started after a few minutes the first two times but the third time it had to be jumped and towed. The vehicle sat at one repair shop for about 1 week with no diagnosis. I then requested that the vehicle be taken back to Carmax and 1 week later still no diagnosis because the vehicle is not “duplicating” the issue. While Carmax appears to understand my disappointment and frustration, selling a vehicle with this type of mechanical issue is unacceptable! My hope is that Carmax does the right thing and takes the vehicle back or allows for a trade at the very least.

CarMax auto in kennesaw is terrible. I have been dealing with title transfer since December. I can’t register my vehicle in new state without! I have sent them everything they need and talked with multiple people on at least 8 calls to them. They have rejected my request 4 times after multiple faxes, calls, and I even spoke with 3 people who tried to help but have no control of how the title dept processes their requests. I am at my wits end with them!! Absolutely horrible service and they just give you the runaround about when your info will go through.
I have had the Idaho dmv call me 4 times saying I can’t register my truck until they approve the title transfer. These people at CarMax have no idea what they are doing! I’m sitting here with my thumb in my butt waiting and waiting. I’ve done my part multiple times. Do not deal with CarMax especially Kennesaw, Ga. Which is their main branch where all of their business operations are handled. They have no comprehension of customer service. The only reason I gave one star is because of the nice representatives who tried to help. Title sucks at CarMax. That dept needs a complete overhaul! They should all be fired. I never complain like this but I have had it! 3 1/2 months! I need someone who can help me. My registration is due!

I went back to talk to a sales manager and she said they would add after-market heated seats and that someone would call me to schedule it. They didn't offer a reimbursement for the missing option and I haven't heard back from them about scheduling. I wasn't happy about adding an aftermarket product. Anyway, the salesman that I purchased the Jeep from was great. However, the sales manager was a terrible. I will not buy another vehicle from them.

Trade in a vehicle for a 2017 GMC Yukon. 1. Notice a very strange smell when I turn on the AC or Heat - can't figure out what it is. 2. After 28 days of driving vehicle notice the RPMs hang out around 3k a lot and it seems to suddenly have difficulty shifting gears. This was on a short drive. I got nervous and parked it until my husband got home. 3. Drove it again and the check engine light came on. 4. Took it to mechanic who said the check engine light was for "Torque Converter Stuck Shut". He said the transmission had been flushed and it seems they tried to do a short term fix of the vehicle before the transmission gave out completely. 5. Started googling this issue and it seems that this is a common issue for this vehicle and the transmission has "a design flaw" that is not covered by GMC's warranty based on a recent court case. GMC says it's not a service issue. It is a design issue.
6. I get in touch with CarMax as it has been less than 30 days and I am within the 1,500 for their return policy. *This is the one redeeming quality for CarMax. 7. I get a run around and they try and stall the return because the vehicle needs a tow back to dealership (almost 2 hours away). I finally explain that they can either tow this vehicle or I can drive it to them and absolutely ruin the transmission and possibly blow the engine in the process but either way it goes back on their lot within the next 12 hours. How would they like to handle it. They finally get a tow truck out but I have to follow the tow truck back to be there to sign the vehicle back over. Frustrating and inconvenient, but it is what it is. 8. I wait around in the dealership for a long time while they sort it out. Eventually they bring me documents to sign and a check to reimburse me for my trade in.
9. The trade in had an error on title (which we had corrected as the previous owner had signed all their paperwork and had it notarized and FEDEX the docs back from the FL Keys (this is for my trade in - to be clear). They issued the reimbursement check for the GMC I purchased to both me and the other person on title (AGAIN IN ERROR AND NO ONE KNEW ABOUT THIS UNTIL I TRADED THE CAR IN AND HAD IT CORRECTED). They said because the title of the trade in was in both names when I traded the vehicle in they had to issue the check that way. My bank said they could not cash check unless the other person was present (who lives over 1k miles away). They would also not give my trade in back.
In summary - I am glad that I am not stuck with a Yukon with a bad transmission. However, I am furious that I currently have NO Vehicle and a reimbursement check for my previous vehicle that I cannot do anything with. They seemed very smug about the whole situation and kept quoting their "policies" no matter how irrational they were. The lack of common sense or willingness to try to come up with solutions or assist the customer with a frustrating situation is counterproductive to the 30 day return policy that is supposed to highlight their stand apart service. Not to mention that I also feel guilt that some other sucker is going to end up with that Yukon. Either way I am done with CarMax.

I sold my car last February 1, 2022; process was really slow. Agent had been going back and forth in their business office and after 3 hours, he came back with my check. The 3 hour wait time was not the issue but the time they did send the check for to payoff my remaining loan on my bank!!! After almost 2 weeks of waiting, I casually checked on my bank if they did receive the check from CARMAX in Canoga Park and as expected they did not. So I called Canoga Park and asked them what's wrong and they just read their script and told me to wait for exactly 15 days. So I did; after 15 days I did follow it up with them and guess what - they did not send the check to my bank.
Now, it has been a month and they haven't send the check to my bank. I already paid the monthly for February and I guess I will still be paying for March. What bothers me is that if they do finally send the check to my bank, the money that I paid will not be included on the said check! To be fair with CARMAX, my friend did sell her car at the Burbank location and she did not have any issues with them. I guess the people at the Canoga Park location do need to learn from the people at Burbank on how to do business properly...

They said that they wanted to get it ready and ensure everything was in great shape. When I finally saw the car, it was in poor shape and I was told that significant additional repair work would be required. Meanwhile, I am driving around in a rental car after my previous car was destroyed in an accident. Obviously, I was furious. After about a week, CarMax agreed to refund my $2000 in shipping costs as they understood that the car was not as advertised in the listing, which priced the car at $63k. I purchased a 2012 Honda Crosstour from Carmax. It was a beautiful car and its engine was a superstar. At about 92,000 miles the engine light came on. I am a shade tree mechanic so I put my diagnostic tool on it and it gave me an error code. I researched the codes and what the steps were to fix them. I called Carmax service and the wait time was three weeks out. The error code fixes were easy enough, so I replaced the oil sensors rear and front, spark plugs, coils, MAFS. The engine light still came on. So I did some more research. It seems there was a Class Action Lawsuit regarding this engine. There was an extended warranty that was part of that settlement. It expired in 2020. However the lawsuit nor the extended warranty were not made available to those that did not file paperwork for the CAL.
I advised Carmax of the CAL and the ring issue disclosed by Honda Corporate in trying to remedy the issue. It has been about 8 weeks three visits to Carmax and the issue persists. When it came to a rental an extension to the 10 day limit was given. Then on the last visit they gave me a loaner. The loaner was a Dodge SUV which turned out to have a severe vibration in the front end. I told Carmax about the issue and was told they did not have another loaner. I had to cancel a lengthy trip due to not having a vehicle that worked. In addition to them throwing up their hands due to an unavailable loaner, their communication flows like concrete! To add insult to injury Carmax would not warranty the parts I installed because they were not HONDA stuff. I am so disgusted! I thought I had a 300,000 mile car. If you have a VTEC engine make sure you have an extended warranty!!!!

Tell me why I should pay in my case over $3000 more than the car is worth?? Their reasoning- cost to buy and fix up to resell. If a car is in need of so much work to list the cost well over What it it’s worth then maybe Carmax needs to buy better cars that do not need so much work. Miles did not change the listing price either. You can have two different years of the same car one with low miles and one with high miles and still be listed the same price $17998.

Then a few months later my car decides not to start up every time I drove so we can cut it off it would get stuck so I continuously paid For tow tucks. So then he told me to send it to one of their repair places And I did. They fix it within a day. I had to pay for a battery Because of my extended care warranty does not pay for that. Then 2 months later the car shut down while I am driving on the highway. That to me is an safety issue. So I call another tow truck to get me out of that dangerous place. So I call to get help with a rental because that is in my warranty and they tell me that I can pay for a rental and as soon as they can figure things they would reimburse me. So then I went to the dealership and they reimburse me for the last tow.
Then they give me a car to test drive but before they give me the car they tell me this car has 3 recalls but only 1 can be fixed. So before I traded my car for a new one I went home and did my research and the recall was a big danger zone. How could they try to sell that. So I went and told them I didn’t want that car due to it being dangerous. So then I had to Uber back home 27 miles away cause I don’t have a way home now. Every sales person informed me that "they sell so many cars." After visiting Carmax several times, I saw a car online and contacted the Gastonia location which is an hour away. After arranging a test drive for several vehicles, I arrived in Gastonia at 6:20 pm. I checked in and was told to go look at the trucks and a sales representative would be out momentarily. He stated they would call or text me if they didn't see me. It was freezing outside, but I stayed outside for an hour and no salesperson came out or called.
I had been prepared to spend about $50,000 for a truck. However, since it was a Monday, and there were plenty of salespersons on duty, and very few customers, and I had waited outside, I determined that I would not purchase a vehicle from this location. They didn't even call me when I left. They didn't want to provide me with the experience that I needed to make a purchase. Beware of Carmax!!!! It’s nothing but a Bait and Switch Scam!!! I went online to try and see how much I could get from my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Limited Sterling Edition, Original Owner, Dealer Serviced Only, All Service Records Available, Very Well Kept, Only 41,000 miles, No Damage, Never in an Accident, Running Like New. Manufacturer Front, Rear and Trunk All Weather Mats, Dealer Installed Trailer Hitch, Manufacturer‘s Extended Warranty for 8 Years of 125,000 Miles. The vehicle is a gem and only reason for selling was lack of usage. I no longer have a need for it, having another vehicle and being retired. It would have been the perfect vehicle for someone looking to keep it and drive it and make use of the Extended Warranty.
I decided to check out Carmax, Carvana and posting it on FB Market Place and on Craigslist. Well, after going to Carmax online and filling out all the details, they came back with an instant offer of $34,000, and asked that I bring the vehicle to their location in Bradenton, FL Which was the closest to where I live. I made an appointment and went there expecting that they would try to bring the price down a few hundred, maybe even $1000 dollars, which I thought would be the normal way of conducting these transactions.
Upon arrival I was greeted by a nice young man, with a tag with the number 2021, which was indicative of him being a fairly recent hire. He said he would have to take about 35 photos of the car and send them to a National Center, which is where the online offers are made from. He was very polite and even said to me “I can tell that you baby this car”. He was right, and could not find any fault with the car, after thoroughly going through everything.
I had no problem with that and waited patiently for about a half hour, until I decided to approach him and asked what was the hold up; I had already received an offer and he verified the condition of the car, so I expected this to be a fairly simple transaction. I even suggested that I could leave and wait for his call to return, since it looked like they were busy with a lot of people waiting to get their online offers confirmed, while others waited to purchase a vehicle from their lot. He told me it would only be an additional 5 minutes.
A few minutes later, and without finding a single issue wrong with the car, he came back and had me and my wife sit down on a computer and showed me the number that the “National Center” had quoted my vehicle was worth. That number was $ 28,890. Now that to me was a total insult and seemed like a scam, the classical “Bait and Switch Scam”. Without saying much I just told him that I would be posting a nice review detailing how their scam works. He couldn’t say anything but smiled and looked genuinely embarrassed.
I can’t understand how these people waste other people’s time by pulling such a stunt. They could have just been upfront and honest online and not made me waste my time for a ridiculous $5000 low ball difference without any faults with the vehicle. I understand that unfortunately with the current economic situation, many people may need to sell their vehicle for whatever they can get, but this is clearly taking advantage of people and a total disregard for other people’s time.
As luck would have it, on the same day I got in contact with G. Bond from the Crown Automotive Group in St. Petersburg. He was honest, and did not waste my time, which is the only thing I was hoping for; he explained to me what the vehicle was really worth for the purpose of reselling it and made an honest offer of $32,000. I thought about it for several days and I accepted the offer; he came to my house, inspected the car, had me sign some paperwork and handed me a check. The offer did not change and I felt that he did not waste my time. Big difference in how to operate a business, honesty still exists.
The moral of the story is: Don’t be fooled by people who give you an unrealistic offer and then try to lowball you by many thousands when they meet you, feeling they can take advantage of the fact that you made the trip to them and are somewhat invested in the deal, while hoping that you need that money bad. It is businesses like Carmax that operate without scruples that give other businesses in the industry a bad name. Shame on you Carmax, and thank you Crown Auto Group. J. **

The chosen warranty is 60 months or 100,000 miles which a cancellation cause when one of these conditions occurs first. I was reviewing my paperwork today and notice the agreement expires when the odometer hits 100,000 miles. I thought this was a mistake because I purchased 60 months or 100,000 miles of coverage. I was under the impression that my agreement would expire in 60 months or when the odometer reads 145,000 miles (original miles plus 100,000). I was today today that the agreement would expire once the odometer reads 100,000, so I don't get 100,000 miles of coverage, but 55,000.
This was not clearly explain or publicized when I was reviewing the literature, perhaps it was in the small print. I noticed Carmax failed to include all the service agreement details in my package. I am highly disappointed that I was deceived into believing a false narrative. Carmax should have said I was purchasing 55,000 service plan. Then again, they would get challenged on the price. Seven days ago, I paid to transfer a 2019 BMW 540i from Bakersfield to the Palm Desert Carmax dealership, based on the specifications, features and packages listed on their website. If the test drive went well, I was going forward with the deal as the price was fair and within the KBB range I was willing to pay. Upon the test drive, I realized the vehicle did not contain a key package, which was the Premium Package at a retail cost of $1,950. It was listed in the specs, but did not contain the features typically included with this package.
After speaking with Bill, the Manager, he explained to me that the packages listed on the CarMax websites do not necessarily match those packages offered by the original manufacturer, even though the package names listed in the CarMax website matched identically to the manufacturer package names. It is the buyer’s responsibility to look at the list of features, one by one, to determine if it contains everything you are looking for, as opposed to relying upon the package name itself to encompass all of the items this type of package would normally include. Apparently, CarMax packages and manufacturer packages could differ.
In the end, I passed on the vehicle because the lack of this Premium package reduced the value of the vehicle by approximately $2,000. Bill was not able to reduce the cost of the vehicle, comp a MaxCare plan or raise the offer on my trade-in, due to corporate guidelines. Because of these guidelines, they lost a sale that day and I wasted 2/3 of a day of my time.
However, on a positive note, the staff, including Bill, were very polite and tried their best to remedy the situation, under the circumstances. They do not seem to have the typical used car salesman mentality and Bill did reimburse my transfer fee of $199, along with filling my tank with gas. He also offered to comp my transfer fee up to $1,000, if I located a different CarMax vehicle nationwide.
So, hopefully CarMax corporate reads this post and considers changing their policies to provide more flexibility to their local dealerships and managers to make adjustments to car prices, extended service plans and trade-in amounts, when justified and warranted. A local manager should have this discretion. This was my first experience with CarMax and in the end was not a satisfying experience. I have not decided if I will continue to search other vehicles in the CarMax network or go back to BMW dealerships. For those considering CarMax for your next purchase, be sure the specs list all of the features you are wanting and not just trust the package names listed to contain everything you would expect.

Worst customer service experience of my life. I sold my my car to them over a month ago, and due to some paperwork, payment was delayed. I was assuming a week and patiently waited for several. But now, a month and a half later, I still have not been paid and no one seems to be able to help. They never even reached out to give me an update! This location NEVER answers the phone. I've called 8+ times in the last 2 weeks alone and have been left waiting for hours to eventually reach a human that also cannot contact the location either. I'm CC'd on multiple emails that get me nowhere. At this point, they've essentially stolen my car. I've been without a car in a new state for 45 days having to borrow, uber or bus because they refuse to answer my call and resolve the matter. I hoping that they will finally follow up with me if I start writing reviews...fingers crossed. Go with Carvana instead.

Carmax was amazing. I shopped for a car that weekend. I found one they were able to ship to a dealer near me. I was alerted that Tuesday that it was ready and I went to the dealer. I got to inspect the car, and then signed the papers. Whole process took about three hours because there was a line of people trying to checkout. Super easy and painless though.

Everything I was told turned out to not be true. The site said no car transfer fee, wrong, there was. The customer service staff said I could have it delivered to my driveway, wrong, I had to have my wife drive me to their dealership an hour away. They said once there, the Curbside service would be fast and not require me to come into the dealership, wrong, I had to spend 2 hours in the dealership. They said my car would be delivered in one week, wrong, it took 2 weeks. The original financing that I agreed to suddenly changed a week later with no explanation as to why.
The only reason I stayed with Carmax was because my wife loved the car and because I assumed the experience would be no better at their competitors. It was not until I sent an email to the CEO (CEO@carmax.com for those interested) that I got anyone to try and help figure out why my experience was so bad. They refunded the $200 transfer fee thinking that would shut me up...way too little, way too late. Bottom line, I strongly suggest going any other route but Carmax.

Do not buy the CarMax extended warranties. They are weasels and will "fine print" you out of covering the repairs they claim to cover. Four years ago, I purchased my third vehicle from CarMax, an Audi Q5, along with a MaxCare warranty. On July 24th of this year, my wife and son got stuck on the side of Afton Mounting going to Harrisonburg, VA because the engine of the Audi Q5 blew up. Luckily, despite being stuck on the shoulder of a mountain road, neither she nor our son was hurt. After spending the weekend picking up my family, I had the car towed to the nearest dealer to be repaired. I assumed that this was the end of our harrowing experience. However, I had not started dealing with MaxCare, yet.
The dealer called MaxCare the following week with the repair information and was told MaxCare denied the claim. When I purchased my car from CarMax, the sales associate told me that “people love the MaxCare warranty.” Well, I certainly don’t. Dealing with MaxCare has been nothing short of a catastrophic failure, exactly the kind of failure that our car experienced, and exactly the kind of failure I expect a warranty to cover. My claim was denied twice by MaxCare. On top of the fact that CarMax sold a car that blew up after only being driven 45,000 miles, I spent three weeks trying to get the car repaired. This is completely unacceptable. I bought the MaxCare warranty for “peace of mind” not for “added stress and aggravation.”
The Audi clearly experienced an engine failure that should be covered by the “comprehensive” warranty. The car had been serviced by Audi of Richmond and Delta V Auto and was up to date on all scheduled maintenance. I understand that the repairs will be expensive. But if CarMax doesn’t want to cover repairs for an Audi, then either 1) don’t sell the vehicle or 2) don’t sell insurance. Weaseling out of your responsibility is a horrible way to treat your loyal customers. Don't waste your money on the worthless MaxCare warranty.

I will get right to the point. Carmax sold me a car that ended up with a failed clutch, missing parts, dirty engine oil, and fouled-up spark plugs. The state of this vehicle was the polar opposite of what Carmax promotes as their core values which are stated as: "Do the right thing, Put people first, etc." Carmax, knowing that I was driving 800 miles back to my home state, basically the sent me on my way in a car that was in no way roadworthy for such a trek, I considered myself lucky I made it back. A 2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premiere. I was going to trade in my low miles 2016 Jeep Compass. I was provided a pretty decent offer so the next stage would be to wait for a rep to call me to start this process. A day later a rep called me and we started. There were tons of questions, pre-qualifiers, etc. I decided I would pay cash for my vehicle and so I immediately paid for the transfer of the Vehicle from PA to Albany, NY which was gonna run me $200 non-refundable dollars. So that done, I waited and waited.
My trade in offer expired at this point. So after getting tired of waiting I called to find out what the deal is with my vehicle. The rep gasses me up telling me the car was delivered (why didn't anyone call me) and it's being put through inspection. In the meantime to expedite everything I needed to re-submit my pictures of my vehicle and fill out forms again for my trade in offer. I did it that night. Again more waiting, my trade in offer expires yet again (this is the third time). Finally, again I get on the customer service chat to find out what the deal is and to tell them that at this point I'm so over it. I think I don't want the car. Well the rep tells me it's my lucky day. The car is ready. It was a quarter to five. If I hadn't called, no one was going to call or send me an email to tell me that this car was ready. At this point I'm over it. I have to ask myself why would I dish out in cash $18k to purchase a car from a company that can't even provide the most basic customer service?
If your staff can't take the time to give a customer who paid cash for this transfer, the courtesy of giving updates and walking you through the process, imagine what would happen after I give my money and something goes wrong with the vehicle. I can't trust you to give me good service after I gave you $200 and now I'm expected to give $18k? No. I decided to take the loss on the $200. I wasn't going to travel 3 hours to Albany and then realize they're pulling a fast one on me. Needless to say I was very surprised and disappointed because other reviews were pretty favorable. They got 3 stars on yelp. Anyway, beware. If you can avoid the transfer fee, do that in case you decide you don't want to deal with crappy customer service.

In February of 2021 I purchased a Hyundai Equus Ultimate from the Sacramento location. I paid 300+ to have it shipped in from Henderson, NV. Once it arrived took possession of the vehicle and that was that. After a couple of weeks of ownership there were some things that were not adding up. The vehicle 40K miles on it but the wear and tear was not consistent with the miles on the vehicle. Dashboard coming apart, clouded headlights and buckled front wheel liners which was consistent with a front end minor collision, I did not feel comfortable keeping that car long term and exercised the 30 day return policy. For a car that cost $70,000 new and only a couple of years old things did not add up. I paid $24,000+/- cash and needed the car to be trouble free
I returned the car and saw that the Henderson, nv location had another new arrival Hyundai Equus Ultimate which was two years older but only had 34,000 miles and was in much better condition.Carmax demanded that I pay $300+ to have the new vehicle shipped into California. I made it very clear that I was not paying another $360 to have another car shipped in and I guess that we would not be doing business. Their loss. I went home and not more than a couple hours later I received a call from management asking what can be done to do a deal. I made it clear that I was not paying shipping again and that if they would pay to have the car shipped I would take a look at it once it arrived at the dealership. They agreed to ship the vehicle
Once the 2nd vehicle arrived I did the same process. I went look at the car, test drove it, loved it, and purchased it. After the 30 days this is where the headaches ramped up specifically with Carmax and the lack of customer care. After 30 days I had a list of issues that needed to be addressed. I called to make an appointment to bring my vehicle and was advised by the service advisor Albert to bring my vehicle in and have the issues addressed. I had made an extensive explanation of the issues with instructions on how to duplicate the issues.
After having the car for a week Albert had informed me that one of the issues was addressed however they had sent the car over to the Hyundai dealership and could not find anything else wrong with the vehicle or the issues that I had documented. I asked Albert if he looked at the notes that I had provided and he had no response. When I went to the dealership Albert had told me that the dealership said that there were no software updates for the vehicle or for the GPS navigation system, which after hearing this I realized that Albert had no idea or understanding of what the issues were and did not properly convey the issues to the dealership. When I went to Carmax Albert assured me that the issue would be fixed in spite of him not understanding the issue.
He advised that I take the vehicle and make an appointment to bring the vehicle back once he could get an appointment date with Hyundai to bring the vehicle in. I followed up and Albert told me to bring the vehicle in on a Friday so that he could make sure that it was at the Hyundai Dealership for a Monday morning appointment.
As instructed I brought the vehicle in on a Friday so that it could be taken to the dealership by Monday Morning. However when I had driven to CarMax on Wednesday of the following week to get some answers since the phones were not being answered I noticed that the car was still sitting in the back 40 of the customer car lot, Between two large trucks. When I expressed my concern about a black car with black leather interior sitting in the lot, with windows rolled up on a 100 degree plus day between two trucks, Albert, or Carmax had no care in the world about my concerns. Albert told me that they were short staffed so as a result they did not have anyone who could take the car to Carmax and that he was not sure of when it would go over to Hyundai. The car remained in the customer car lot for another week or two. After two weeks the car was caked with dust and dirt.
After the car finally went to the Hyundai Dealership the service manager had called me to find out specifically what the issue was with the car since Albert was not able to explain the issue due to his lack of understanding. The Hyundai Service manager took thorough notes and was able to convey the issue to the service tech.
In the beginning for the 1st month and a half every time I wanted to know what was going on with the car I would have to call Carmax and wait at a minimum for 45 minutes on hold, leave a message or sometimes get disconnected. Customer service is not a forte of Carmax for sure. After about 5 weeks I was contacted and told that Sacramento Hyundai had found an issue with the head unit which was causing the problem that had been reported and that a new head unit would need to be ordered and that once the unit was received which was expected to take a couple of weeks that the would give me a call once the work was completed.
After I had called CarMax for an update I was told that the head unit had been replaced successfully and that the issue was resolved however after replacing the head unit that Sacramento Hyundai had discovered another NEW issue. The rear backup camera had stopped working. The three other surround cameras worked but the rear camera would no longer function. I was told told that additional time would be needed to troubleshoot why the backup camera was no longer working
Two more weeks go by and I finally receive a call from Carmax and they stated that Sacramento Hyundai figured out why the rear camera was no longer working and that the car’s camera control module was bad and needed to be replaced. I was also told that in spite of the camera working before the car was brought in, there was a discussion on who was going to cover the cost of the part and labor. I was told at that time that Carmax would provide a status when there were new developments.
Another week goes by and I receive a call that the camera control module would be ordered and that Sacramento Hyundai would not be picking up the cost of the parts/labor. After another week the part had come in and the work had been done and I received a call that I could pick the car up. To sum up here is my takeaways from my experience with Carmax and it to state up front my experience was a extremely experience:
CarMax had my car for 90 days to the day. That is way too long and un-called-for It was only after CarMax had my car for two weeks that I said that I would need a loaner car. Albert never divulged that they had loaner cars available and it was only after he had told another customer that they could have a loaner car. There was no reason that I should have to make the suggestion and Albert should had made it known that I could have a loaner car.
Carmax is required to call the customer and provide updates on a regular or daily basis. This did not happen to me. Every time I needed an update I would have to call Carmax, navigate the phone menu and wait on hold for 45 minutes only to get little or no update at all. If you expect Carmax to call you with updates get over that notion because it will not happen.
If you expect Carmax to take care of your car while it is in their possession don’t get your hopes up. Regardless of what make or model of car you have it will be treated the same as the cheapest car in their service or inventory lot. If your car is in service for more than a day THEY WILL park your car in the customer lot (back 40) windows rolled up on a 100 degree day, Your car will bake and get car dents just like any car at Home Depot or Walmart.
My $70,000 car went in with no dents or imperfections and once I received it back it had two dings on opposite sides of the car. The dings were quite obvious so-much-so that Carmax tried to touch the scratches up with a paint that didn’t even match the car’s color. When I pointed this out to Jake in Service his attitude was one of I “don’t care attitude”. It was also clear that the car just backed in the sun as there was spotting on the black leather dashboard where the dash had dried in several spots. Expect scratches and dings when you take your car into Carmax. Also expect your key fob to have numerous scratches and gouges in it after your visit to CarMax. That is just what Carmax does
I had called corporate Carmax headquarters to express my concerns with Carmax having my vehicle in their service department for over 3 months. Don’t waste your time as all corporate will do is take notes and then forward the concerns to the local CarMax will go nowhere. I never got a call from the Sacramento Carmax and don’t even think about leaving a message for the service, general, or any other manager at Carmax. They absolutely will not return a call to you. And if you walk into Carmax to speak to a manager they will always make up an excuse such as the manager is not in, they're on vacation, they are sick, etc.
Customer service is non existent at Sacramento Carmax so set your expectations low at the onset at least you will be less disappointed. Sacramento CarMax has a huge customer service issue. Their employees like Albert, Jake, department managers need to be replaced or restrained because they just don’t care. Other service advisors such as Candyce were great. Although I did not receive a call on a regular basis from Candyce when she did call she relayed information in an understandable and comprehensive manner.
The only two good things that I will say about the Sacramento CarMax which is not specific to that location is: The 30 day car return option is a great policy. The 90 day warranty is a great policy. If it was not for the above two benefits I would not ever consider CarMax again there are just better options available. I certainly will not be recommending CarMax to anyone in the future.

I bought a vehicle through Carmax and they offered the MaxCare warranty (managed by Assurant) which at first sounded like a good deal.... Until I actually needed to use it! I drove my vehicle with my family in it cross country and the transmission started to malfunction, making the vehicle inoperable. I had the vehicle towed to a repair facility and obtained a rental. Maxcare covered the rental for 7 days, then began charging me on the 8th day and hit me with a bill. The rental period is outlined in their contract, fair enough. BUT, Maxcare has been giving the repair facility the runaround for 2 months (60) days now and is requiring every single maintenance record (oil changes, scheduled maintenance, etc, etc, etc) in order for them to even OPEN A CLAIM!
My family has been without this vehicle now for 60 days because Maxcare wants proof of every single oil change as well as all other maintenance performed. Additionally, and probably most importantly, the customer service is very hit and miss. The reps are working from home understandably but some should not (should not be hired to work remotely or should be required to be in an office), because Maxcare is not properly training their employees to work remotely. This is a terrible service and I cannot in good faith recommend it to another human being with a family.

I terminated my MaxCare contract as I am selling the car leaving USA back to Europe. I learned that it takes at least 2 weeks to receive the check, and probably more. Logically, I would be in Europe by then. It seems that Carmax wants you to pay for a car and MaxCare immediately, but they keep your money forever.

My experience with them has been horrible. I was told they cover the clutch by the salesman, they do not. They consider is a wearable item that is expected to go bad even though the pamphlet says, "transmission" on the front page of coverages. They don't cover fluids, bolts, belts, bearings, or the diagnosis fees of the shop that they require before covering the issue. I had to put a thousand dollars on the line in order for the technician to disassemble the transmission before CarMax would say whether or not they would do anything. They they decided to only cover half the labor and some of the parts. I still spent over $1,100 in labor and diagnosis fees to get my car repaired.
That $3,500 warranty I purchased is worthless and I will never buy a car from CarMax ever again. Oh, and they didn't have any available repair appointments for 2 months at CarMax itself even though they touted their amazing repair shop during the sales process, I was told to go to another little shop in another city that honored their warranty. That shop openly admitted that CarMax's warranties are horrible and they always have issues getting them to cover repairs. They even gave me the manager's name for the location I bought my car at and encouraged me to call in and complain about it. Very disappointed.

I cannot say enough times DON'T expect a lick of help, concern, or customer service from CARMAX if your vehicle purchase goes sour ... say for instance, if you happen to buy a car for $15,000 and put $9000 down, then in 2 years you spend MORE than that on repairs and it's still NOT running, don't expect assistance or answers from CARMAX. They will assure you if you bring the lemon car in for an appraisal, they will help you into another vehicle -- but then the appraisal on this $15,000 car you've owned for two years, will come back -- they will even meet you in the parking lot so the customers inside cant hear you scream -- when they cheerfully tell you the vehicle appraisal is ... $2000. Wow that's incredible depreciation for a car you paid $15,000 and spent $17,000 in repairs.
They will finally tenderly let you know -- or a lawyer will -- that you buy every used car "as is". If it's a lemon it's a lemon. If you got ** on this fabulous deal you made with them, even if you purchased the $5000 MAXCARE policy, you're on your own buddy. By the way even though you didn't reach 10 years or 100,000 miles, MAXCARE will stop covering their share of the repairs, because the vehicle YOU BOUGHT FROM CARMAX, has exceeded the maximum payout ... didn't even know that was part of the "deal", did ya. And when CARMAX yanks this review as soon as they see it, I will post another one and another one and another one, under a different account if I have to ... on EVERY social media I can find -- setting up emails is easy easy. I can do this TILL I DIE. The car I bought has died already and I'm still making payments...for real.

I filled out an online application. I was approved for a specific car make and model and in addition an appointment was set up to trade in my vehicle with an appointment being made. I arrive at Carmax. They have no record of my deal. I showed them the email. The approval email that they sent to my work email address and also the printed out emails for the trade-in of my vehicle. They still could not find any record of my deal even with the email verification that I printed out for them but this is why I was approved for a Land Rover for certain purchase price. But when I get there all of the sudden the vehicle is not available but they do have other land rovers that were twice as much money as the original vehicle which I was approved for. CONSUMERS STAY AWAY FROM THIS TYPE OF DECEPTION. YOUR WALLET WILL THANK YOU.

This was the first time purchasing a 2nd hand car that wasn't through an authorized dealership. What drew me to these sorts of online dealerships because their catalog is completely online, so I was able to sort out what I was interested in without the hassle of dealing with a used car salesman at a physical location. In addition, most of the online car dealerships have pretty good value propositions, like 30-day return, 90-day warranty, etc.
I did my extensive research between CarMax, Carvana, and Vroom, and although they all offer pretty much the same policies, I chose CarMax because they had more physical dealerships where you can ship the car you like to test drive before you buy the car. The cost of the car transfer is not redeemable upon purchase, but to me, that was a fair price to pay to make sure the car is without "surprises."
The car took about a week to arrive (SF to LA), and I was able to do a 24-hour test drive. This is another great value proposition most other dealerships don't have that I found useful. I was able to take it to the freeway and back to my home to see how it fits in my garage. I went back after 3 hours and bought the car. After a week my car started making noises whenever I backed up. I took it back to CarMax (the one near mine has a service center) and they fixed it in a day. Also, they provide free Lyft rides, which is convenient so you don't need to wait at the shop. Since the repair was within the 90 day warranty period, they replaced the brakes free of charge. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied and will return if I ever look for another 2nd hand car. Below are some unrelated notes you may find useful:
- CarMax has an optional 5 year warranty plan.- Only vroom cold called once you registered an account with them. All of them will call you if you did a pre-qualification with them.
- CarMax was started by Circuit City, in '93 I believe (experience).
- When you request the 24-hour test drive, sales will push you to buy and use the return policy instead. Resist if you are not sure since opening a financing account will affect your credit score.
- Check your tire PSI (mine had 40 psi in the front right and 30 in the others), motor oil, replace air filters after you buy your 2nd hand car.
