Mother has had for 2 years, has been ill and hospitalized and now in nursing home. Life Alert would not cancel unless we had proof. Our family has been through a nightmare with her illness and to have to deal with their heartless demands was simply unacceptable. Do not use this service. They just want senior citizens’ money. They have no heart!
In many incidences, family members try to cancel this life saving service just to save a few dollars while not understanding the danger they are putting their elderly loved one in. Therefore, Life Alert has provisions in our contract as safety measures for our customers.
However, we do understand that living arrangements do change for our customers; that is why we are more than accommodating to cancel the contract when a faxed notice from the nursing facility is received. Yesterday, we received the notice and we are currently in the process of cancelling this account.
We are sorry you feel this step is not necessary but we hope family members can understand that Life Alert takes saving lives very seriously and this contractual provision is a safety measure for our customers. Moreover, these terms are verbally explained at the time of signing up as well as being repeated in the contract.
We are sorry that your mother is ill, but we do hope that you can see we too have her best interest (and health) at heart. We hope the best for you and your family.

My mother is almost 96 years old. An ambulance has been called many times to our home. We live two blocks away from the hospital and never has it taken more than two minutes from the time I call 911 for the ambulance to be in our driveway. On 4/2/12, we used Life Alert for the first time. My mother's heart rate was 36. The reason as to why it took Life Alert so long to contact the paramedics, I do not know. I do know that after Life Alert was contacted, they in turn called the landline phone before they called the ambulance which also took up more time. I requested a timeline from the ambulance driver. The timeline verifies they were at our home within two minutes from the time Life Alert contacted them.
A home health nurse was at our home at the time of the incident. She verifies at least 20 minutes passed from the time Life Alert was called and the ambulance arrived. Also, I was told by the sales rep that if there were no response when the Life Alert button was pushed, an ambulance would automatically be called in case the patient had a stroke. That was very comforting, but after speaking to John ** with Life Alert, he informed me that was false information. Thirdly, there is a 911 phone that is included in the packet, which we discovered does not work in the town which we live in, so it is worthless.
Life Alert understands the fear that an adult child experiences when their parent is in need of emergency help, that is why our emergency managers are trained on how to work with family emotions as well as the person who is in need of help. But unfortunately, a person’s perspective can become skewed due to panic and worry - as in this situation.
Since this complaint was posted, Life Alert has been in contact with the customers as well as performing a thorough investigation of the event with the local authorities and the result is as follows:
The emergency log that is automatically generated through the computer system coincides with the timeline from the police and emergency crew on scene, which indicates that once the Life Alert pendant was pressed and our emergency dispatcher was in contact with the victim, the police and EMTs arrived within 8-9 and not 20 minutes as stated. Although we understand that in a highly emotional situation minutes can seem like a very long time, in this case, the information in the complaint is severely inaccurate.
Moreover, when the emergency pendant is pressed we call the home to verify if there is an emergency so that EMTs are NOT sent out needlessly having the customer incur an ambulance cost. This procedure is explained when purchasing the Life Alert service and it was also explained to by our employee, John ***.
Lastly, the 911 phone works anywhere in the United States where GSM cellular phones operate, and needs to be tested by the customer to determine its working ability in the customer’s cellular area. In this case, we have cancelled the 911 phone for this customer and have financially adjusted her account accordingly.

When my mother passed out and fell, she pushed her Life Alert bracelet when she came too. The person she talked to asked her if she needed help and sent help immediately. She also talked to her until help arrived. She was both helpful and comforting to my mother.

My mother suffered a massive stroke. She managed to press her Life Alert button and within minutes the EMTs were there. Life Alert notified everyone on her call list so we got there at the same time as the ambulance. Life Alert then called us back to make sure we knew which hospital they were taking her too. She is having a slow recovery, but Life Alert saved her life. Thank you.

I am 94, had recently undergone back surgery, and then had a fall in my kitchen, hitting my head on the left. Life Alerts answer to my call on my alert button was immediate, help arrived by EMT and you alerted all three of my out of town family members to my condition. I am a new subscriber and am very pleased with your response. It gives me security when alone.

I live by myself and each time I had to call I was alone. I have fallen, a total of three times. Each time the Life Alert people arrived promptly and helped me back to my lift chair. They checked me for any injury and asked if I needed to go to the hospital, I didnt. I feel so safe knowing that you are only a phone call away.

I left a pot on my stove and forgot about it and went out to water the plants. When I got near the garage I heard this beep and opened the door and the room was full of grey smoke. Life Alert had been notified and the lady was on the line saying fire trucks are on the way, get out of the house. Everyone was so nice. They cleared the smoke with fans. Thank you.
