Life Alert was founded in 1987, making it one of the first personal emergency response companies in the United States. The company’s systems have a base hub and a help button that can be worn around the neck on a pendant or wristband. Life Alert advertises that its pendants have a 10-year battery life and don't require charging. Monitoring centers are UL-certified and have the Five Diamond designation from The Monitoring Association.

    I contacted Life Alert after my mother suffered a stroke for additional information. What followed has been 4 weeks of daily, 3-5 calls/day and night, home and work sales calls. When I advised Life Alert I had gone with another company, they asked which one, for which I obliged Life Alert with the information and the extremely rude response was, "Well, THAT was a mistake" and I was hung up on. Considering the at risk population Life Alert claims to "serve" this was a very disturbing experience. I am just thankful it was me and not my mother trying to make and receive these calls. HORRIBLE SALES TACTICS.

We are grateful that this person filed a complaint so that we are aware of the situation, and we have taken disciplinary action against the representative.

    Life Alert believes it is important to remain professional and caring always because many times people who have gone with a competitor tend to sign up with Life Alert later down the road due to our outstanding service; top of the line equipment; and our owned and operated, large, emergency dispatch center – advantages that our competitors do not have.

    So having a potential customer be turned off by us due to a rude representative means that we not only lost her business now but in the future as well.

    Again, Life Alert is truly sorry any inconveniences or unpleasantness that this person may have experienced.

    I receive several calls per day from Life Alert on my business cell phone because an elderly neighbor asked for assistance with her Life Alert and I called for help using my cell phone. After numerous requests to have this automatic call center solicitations from ** to stop calling, it has not and I am feeling the calls are harassing.

    These calls are not made by Life Alert; they are telemarketing scammers trying to mislead and defraud consumers by using our trademarked name.

    Life Alert does not employ telemarketers or perform cold calls.

    To learn more, simply type "Medical Alert scam" on your internet browser and many news articles will appear reporting on the scam.

    We cannot tell you how to stop more calls from coming, since they are not coming from Life Alert; however, we recommend filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 1-877-382-4357 against any scam number(s) that you capture on your caller ID.     I take care of my Aunt, my mother’s sister, while her son is in Afghanistan. I am not a saint or any kind of special person. But I have to leave the house for business and spent over a month trying to talk my Aunt into getting Life Alert system, that I would feel safer and endure less stress when away. Many times she has complained of the phone calls from minute lapses in power that triggered a response where I have received calls also. While she was annoyed, I was reassured she was ok. However, recently however, we experienced an overvoltage that went thru half the house somehow and just left the other side dead. The fire alarm in her room went off and woke her up along with the fact her oxygen maker quit. I heard her yelling and then could smell the burnt electrical smell from her surge protector which kept her oxygen equipment intact. It fried the Life Alert and I received a call our power was out, and let them know we took a hit.

    We lost the refrigerator, microwave, phone system, tv and all light bulbs on that side of the house. It was after five when a friend with a working meter came by and found 220 on half the panel. Called the power company and they came out and did a temporary repair and finished the next day. I called Life Alert and was told they would send me "parts" and talk me through the process once they arrived. I was amazed at how a guy could be at our house in hours for a sale, but when the system is down, the first response is a do it yourself kit to see if that works. I spent too much time convincing her to have this installed to be treated like 5 or 6 days without service is acceptable under any circumstances. Was given a number to Mark ** at 1-800 338-9090 ex **.

    I wish you all would try this number, as I have since 3:30 Pacific Time and have been sent to voicemail. I am at the point that I no longer wish to have service with this company, but the pushy salesman type people you get to talk to think the concept is funny and the online search reveals they feel they have you in stranglehold type contract that extends past your death. I do not recommend their product and will one way or another end this relationship.

    Life Alert takes their job of saving lives very seriously. Per the complainant, his aunt’s home experiences many power outages. Although we continue to receive signals from our equipment we still perform a safety check call because she is on oxygen. This is why the complainant's aunt was receiving the calls from us as we needed to ensure everything is ok.

    The complaint mistakes our equipment technician as a sales rep. We do not perform door to door sales. When someone needs our service, they call us and order over the phone. After a sale is made, we send a technician out right away to install our top of the line equipment because we want the customer to be protected as soon as possible.

    The complainant states that we provided a “do it yourself” fix-it type of method when the home experienced a power outage and everything went down. Again, he is mistaken. Our equipment is very sturdy and cutting edge, and we do not charge our customers a monthly equipment fee. When the home experienced a major power failure, we were still receiving a signal, in other words, our equipment did not show it was dead at our end. So we followed troubleshooting procedures which involve first replacing the batteries and a fuse, which fixes the problem 90% of the time. If that does not work, then we overnight new equipment, at no cost to the customer. In this case, the first step procedure did not work, so we offered to overnight new equipment as well as give two weeks credit to the account, which the complainant refused. We have been in contact with the complaint during this whole process and have tried to accommodate him the best that we can.

    Unfortunately, we feel this grievance is more about the complainant trying to find a way to cancel the service his aunt never wanted, and less about Life Alert not doing their job.

    I got Life Alert for my mother. She has now had 24/7 live-in care by a licensed aide through an approved home care services agency and has a doctor who visits her at home because she can no longer leave her house. I no longer need Life Alert. The company instructed me to have her doctor state, on the doctor's prescription pad, that my mom has around the clock home care and no longer needs Life Alert. The doctor faxed the prescription TWICE to the correct fax number and received confirmation that the fax was transmitted. Life Alert continues to insist that they have not gotten the fax and refuses to discontinue billing my mom.

    If I had known how impossible it is to cancel the Life Alert service, I would NEVER have gotten it installed. I am appalled at the rude and inconsiderate treatment my mom is receiving from Life Alert. I'm going to report them to the Better Business Bureau, AARP and every other organization that should be aware of their terrible business practices. Also, when I first called to find out how to cancel the service, I was told by the rep that our system hadn't been operational since April. I made the call in October! Wouldn't you think they'd have notified her that she wasn't protected? Positively outrageous!!!!!! Beware of getting involved with Life Alert. Bad business.

    Life Alert was notified by the complainant on October 24th – a little over a week ago – about her mother’s 24 hour nursing care. We instructed her to fax in the doctor’s note and we would call her back as soon as we received it. Unfortunately, we did not receive the fax so when the complainant called us back on October 31st, we told her we would also accept an email with the doctor’s note attached as a courtesy; that was four days ago and we still have not received the email either. However, to be accommodating, we had a few people search again through all the logs, faxes and emails we’ve received and still there are none belonging to the complainant.

    The issue about our service not being operational is a misunderstanding. All of Life Alert’s cutting edge equipment consistently communicates with our dispatch center. If our service stops working for any reason, such as a power failure at the residence, we automatically get an electronic notification which is logged in our customer’s files. This was the case in October, not April. Our equipment lost power; we called and spoke with the complainant about it and she said she would look into it. Our equipment was and has been working all of this time.
