Life Alert was founded in 1987, making it one of the first personal emergency response companies in the United States. The company’s systems have a base hub and a help button that can be worn around the neck on a pendant or wristband. Life Alert advertises that its pendants have a 10-year battery life and don't require charging. Monitoring centers are UL-certified and have the Five Diamond designation from The Monitoring Association.

    BEWARE of the 3 year contract that Life Alert has for its elderly customers. My dad signed up with Life Alert and he now must be placed into a nursing home. I called Life Alert to cancel the monthly fee and were told that even though he was going into a nursing home, he was obligated to pay the remainder of the contract - over $800!!! Apparently the only way to get out of the remainder of the contract is to DIE!! Literally. I could document that he was no longer living at home alone, but that didn't make a difference to them. My Dad could have used the money they charged for the remainder of the contract. BEWARE!

    Unfortunately, this complaint is grossly inaccurate.

    Our cancel clause is clearly stated in the initial phone consultation and in our written agreement stating that if the patient goes into a nursing facility or requires 24hr nursing care, our agreement will be cancelled.

    When the customer and his family called to cancel their service, they said that the customer was going into a retirement facility – which is NOT a nursing home. Moreover, the retirement home he is going to promotes independent living apartments. This is vastly different than a nursing home where a patience is under 24-hour care and is never left alone. Accidents still occur in retirement homes that can be fatal to a person if help does not come quickly. That is why Life Alert works perfectly for the retirement community lifestyle, and Life Alert customers who move to retirement communities take this life-saving service with them.

    Another grossly inaccurate statement in this complaint is the money that is owed. The complainant failed to mention that we financially worked with the family and gave them a greatly reduced Agreement buyout that resulted in LESS THAN HALF the amount stated.

    My mother called the retention department and tried to cancel her service because she cannot afford it. She asked her options and was told by Marilyn and Dave that if she did not pay that Life Alert would come after her children. When I contacted them they denied saying that and refused to help further.

    All of our calls are recorded for quality assurance. We listened to the calls between the complainant and her mother into Life Alert. At NO time did Life Alert ever say we would come after her children, and when the complainant called us to discuss it, we also made it clear that we never said that.

    The complainant’s mother called to cancel her service and told us that her children had gotten her another service so she didn’t want Life Alert anymore. When reminded that she had an agreement, the woman became hostile, accusing us of lying and cheating her. When she yelled that she couldn’t afford it anymore, our reps tried to assist by suggesting that maybe her children can help with the payments since they were buying her another service. The woman responded by saying she was going to contact her attorney.

    She called back the following day declaring she never signed the agreement. She did and we have sent her another copy of it. We also advised about the cancellation policy and what paperwork would be needed. So the accusation that we refused to help is not true either. The woman’s response was to yell that we were not helping her and she had no further interest in what we had to say, and hung up.

    The complainant called to complain about what her mother told her we supposedly said, and when we explained that we had audio evidence proving we never said that, she didn’t believe us and went on to file this false complaint anyway.

    The truth of the matter is that the complaint’s mother got a different medical service that her children are paying for, by her own admission, and she wanted to neglect her agreement with us. We helped her with advising on how they can cancel the agreement. Moreover, every one of the Life Alert reps that helped this family have been friendly, informative, and patient. We have received the paperwork needed to cancel this account and are in the process of canceling it.

    My father has an emergent need for a medical alert system. In doing my research, I contacted this company. I made it known that I immediately wanted to make a purchase, but would not do so unless I had a few questions answered. They WOULD NOT take my questions or put me through to an agent unless I gave them my full name, phone #, and address. I explained that that information was unnecessary unless I was able to get detailed information (Ex: Does the company assist on the go, or in home only, etc.). 1st and 2nd calls I was placed on a 25 sec hold each time. This was my 9th research call. They were the absolute worse.
