My mom passed January 16, 2015. My mom and dad had to move out of their house in December. I cancelled Life Alert in December also. I'm still dealing with a 911 box Life Alert claims my parents have. They Never received it and I don't want to pay the $95. I have spoken to 4 different people from Life Alert. The first 3 people I spoke to said "Don't worry it's taken care of." 3 different people over a 3 month time frame. I received a bill in my mothers and fathers name today. Life Alert knows my mother died. Do I need a bill in her name for something she never received? I spoke to a supervisor today and she could not help me at all, although she did suggest that I have a good day in a very condescending voice.
We are truly sorry for loss of this complainant’s mother. Life Alert understands the strain and emotional stress family members go through when having to deal with the end of life of a parent, and many times misunderstandings can take place.
All of our calls are recorded for quality assurance. After investigating this complaint thoroughly, we have concluded that the 911 Phone was sent to the parents when the account was first opened a while ago. Sometimes, the elderly misplace or unintentionally throw away our smaller pieces of equipment, such as a pendant or a small phone device, which is most likely the case here.
In regards to the conversations the complainant had with our reps, the recordings do not have our customer service reps telling the complainant, "Don't worry it's taken care of."
Moreover, the call the complainant had with the supervisor indicates that the complainant was very adamant in believing what her elderly mother told her about never receiving the phone, although we have paperwork and an equipment serial number that indicate otherwise. The supervisor tried to assist the complainant the best that she could, but it was not to the satisfaction of the complainant.
The invoice has the complainant’s parents name simply because they are the ones still on the account. This is standard procedure with all companies.
Being the industry leader in personal protection and having worked with many families during stressful times with parents, we truly do sympathize with adult children and the emotional confusion that can take place during a time like this.
So, as act of understanding and compassion for what the complainant is going through with the passing of her mother and the health issues of her father, we will waive the missing equipment fee for the 911 Phone.

My Aunt's account needs to be cancelled because she now lives in Assisted Living and has their "call pendant" now. After numerous phone calls, I am still unable to schedule a pickup for the Life Alert equipment in her home. Her home is 2 hours away and I have limited time to go there for this pickup. I have given the Assisted Living the information to fax but Life Alert has not yet received it and has been very uncooperative. My Mother's Lifeline was so much easier to work with when we needed to cancel her account. I DO NOT recommend Life Alert.
All calls into Life Alert are recorded. After investigating this matter it is discover that when the complainant called to let us know her aunt was moving into an assisted living we asked for that facility to fax us a confirmation per our service agreement. When the complainant called a second time she wanted UPS to pick up the equipment although we had not received the fax from the assisted living and the account had not been closed yet. She said the assisted living facility was having a fax problem and it should be arriving soon. We explained we couldn’t schedule UPS until the account was cancelled but since she lived far away from her aunt, she could take the equipment with her and UPS could pick it up at her home at her convenience. To date, we still have not received the fax to confirm cancellation.

For many months Life Alert has been calling my home telephone asking me to buy their product. I have told them numerous times that I am not interested and to please remove me from their phone list. I have also told them numerous times that I am registered with the National Do Not Call List. I have filed complaints against them with the FCC for making threats of killing me and to killing my family. They call me as many as 20 times per week. If I try to return their calls using their numbers all I ever get are recordings that the numbers are disconnected or no longer in service.

What might be the worst customer service/sales call(s) experience in history... **, an evil excuse for a human being harassed my elderly mother who suffers from Alzheimer's for several weeks. Pressed her into a ridiculous contract and when my mother refused to sign it, the real harassment began. I finally spoke to her thinking maybe dear ole Mom might be exaggerating her fear and the stress she experienced from trying to beg this woman into letting her return the Life Alert System and to please stop bullying her.
Well, the first thing ** did was "tell" me I needed to give her 10 minutes to "explain" what she needed me to do in order to properly care for my mother. I was like... "Excuse me?" I told her mom just wanted to be left alone and I needed an address to send the unit back. She flat out refused to give me any of that information and then told me that if I didn't sign the contract for Mom, that I didn't care about her health and well-being... Wow, my mom lives with my wife and I for the sole purpose of taking care of her for the rest of her life. I hung up on her. So she called back on the house phone and spoke to my wife. Well, then things just got ugly. I finally went around ** and got things worked out and cancelled the account and returned the equipment. But, I did try to follow up with ** Sales Manager, Mr. ** in Tampa, FL. I had to leave a message the first time and he informed the operator that he was in a meeting and about to wrap it up and would call me right back.
A couple of hours later... I try again. He told the operator to tell me he was busy with something else and he'd call me when it was more convenient for him. Umm... OK? No, not OK at all. These people seem to be completely staffed by high pressure crooks that feed on the elderly and swindle them out of insanely high fees, while instilling fear in their customers as a sales technique. I don't normally waste my time writing bad reviews. But, hopefully this will save at least one fortunate person from falling into the nightmare that is Life Alert. BTW, ** phone number is 800-662-9802. Maybe you can get him to take a call. Beware of these crooks and run as far away as possible!!!
We understand that the complainant is trying to protect his mother and we applaud that; however, many of his claims are skewed by frustration and are incorrect.
Life Alert does not cold call or telemarket. So when someone needs our service, they call us; which was the case with the complainant’s mother. Many seniors call us because they want added security and protection even though they live with family. We also have many stories of elderly loved ones falling in the middle of the night – calling out for help – but their family never hears them. We hope the complainant can understand that just because his mother lives with him doesn’t mean she is fully protected.
At no time was our sales rep made aware or told that the complainant’s mother had Alzheimer’s, nor was there any evidence of this in their phone conversations. Instead the rep and mother established a friendship, one where the complainant’s mother would periodically call the rep just to talk, and the rep would put aside her work to spend a few minutes on the phone so the complainant’s mother could chit-chat.
The terms of the agreement were made clear to the complainant’s mother verbally by the rep and by two other people in different departments before the equipment was shipped out. Moreover, the agreement was sent to the complainant with the terms in large bold font at the top to ensure an easy read. We hope the complainant can understand that such an agreement is a price guarantee and is meant to protect his mother. It makes Life Alert fiducially responsible to get his mother help in an emergency – unlike other companies that do not have a contract and can raise prices, sell the subscriber’s account to someone else, and can escape any legal ramifications if they are not able to get help to the person.
We are sorry that the complainant was not able to talk with the sales manager at the time when he called, but we do have phone records verifying that calls were placed back to him from our Tampa office.
Lastly, we have spoken with the representative to find out why she called the complainant’s mother several times after the cancellation. She explained that she was bewildered as to why the woman would suddenly cancel when they have spent so much time together, going over the agreement, answering all of her questions, and the system was already set-up in her home. We have since retrained this rep on our cancellation protocol.
Life Alert is and has been the industry leader in personal protection for over 26 years due to our unbeatable service record, privacy clause, and service agreement that protects our customers. When the complainant called corporate to cancel the service, it was cancelled immediately.

We ordered a Life Alert System for my mother after being repeatedly marketed to relentlessly by their sales people. When I spoke with them, they never mentioned a three year contract that I can recall. My mother does not remember signing a three year contract either. My mother moved into a senior retirement facility with home health care and a 24/7 emergency alert system. Because she does not wear a pendant around her neck, she is still required to keep the Life Alert system due to a three year contact. Also, her phone company is a cable provider, and the Life Alert system does not work with it the phone system. Even if we wanted to keep it, it doesn't work! Just to get out of the contract, they are charging her $200.
On this Consumer Affairs website, it says that Life Alert has no contract. That is not true! I told Life Alert about what I read, and they said they have always had a three year contract. Please, when you are looking for an emergency calling system, call around and do your research. I would go with another company who has better customer service and doesn't take advantage of senior citizens. They were so rude when I talked to them and they gave my mother the runaround on three different occasions. I would never recommend Life Alert.
Life Alert does not cold call or telemarket. When someone needs our product they call us, which is the case with this complaint. All of our representatives know our life saving agreement very well and advise potential customers thoroughly on the terms of the agreement.
However, if there are any misunderstandings between the customer and our representatives in the initial first phone call, Life Alert provides a three-tiered, fail-safe, procedure that protects the customer from buyer’s remorse or not being fully informed of our agreement terms. The agreement is reviewed with the customers two more times by other individuals in different departments (not sales). The last person to call the customer to verify all the details of the agreement is a man who has been with the company since the beginning. He knows the agreement very well and knows how to clearly explain it so that there are no misunderstandings.
Then the customer is given time to review the agreement before signing it and mailing it back to us. The customer IS NOT CHARGED until the signed agreement is received. More importantly, the terms of the agreement are stated boldly in large font at the beginning of the agreement so that our elderly customers can see it and understand it clearly. The claim that the complainant and her mother were not informed of the agreement terms is absolutely not true, since it was signed.
The signed agreement explains that Life Alert will cancel the agreement if the user (in this case complainant’s mother) “enters into a skilled nursing facility or has 24 hour in-home professional care…” The complainant’s mother moved into a retirement facility, which is not a nursing home. A retirement facility does not guarantee immediate help in an emergency like a nursing home, 24-hr care, or Life Alert can.
As for the phone cable provider, Life Alert offers a wireless solution for those who do not have a traditional landline.
