Life Alert was founded in 1987, making it one of the first personal emergency response companies in the United States. The company’s systems have a base hub and a help button that can be worn around the neck on a pendant or wristband. Life Alert advertises that its pendants have a 10-year battery life and don't require charging.     My 88 year old mother recently purchased Life Alert service. A serviceman came to her apartment, installed the equipment and asked her to sign some papers. He told her she was just signing for the equipment. Unbeknownst to her it turns out she was signing a 3 year contract. Had she known this she never would have signed up for the service. She tried calling Life Alert and they were completely disinterested in helping. She believes she was taken advantage of and is extremely dissatisfied and upset. After doing some research it seems her story is not at all uncommon.

    Even on the BBB website there are many similar complaints. How they still have an A+ rating makes me suspect of the BBB. If you read the fine print in the contract, which no elderly person could possibly read, you are basically given up your right to take them to court. Instead you have to file for arbitration and the only place you can file is California! It seems pretty clear Life Alert's actual business model is preying on the elderly. They must have little confidence in their ability to keep customers without tying them in long term deals. My suggestion is stay as far away as possible from Life Alert. They are an abomination and there are much better options available and less expensive to boot.

    We are sorry for any inconveniences that our customer and her son feels she has may have experienced. We see that this customer had a signed Service Agreement with us from 2013 through 2017. She then decided to go to another company that was cheaper, only to came back to Life Alert because she was not happy with the service and the way she was being treated there.

    Two months ago she became a new account again and was reminded twice of our Service Agreement before the equipment was sent to her. When the serviceman arrived to install the equipment, he handed her the Service Agreement for her to review, which has the cost and terms in big bold letters at the top of the agreement.

    Life Alert is the industry leader in personal protection and that is why we have a lot of repeat customers. Life Alert saves a life every 11 minutes and we have almost 40,000 lifesaving testimonials from grateful customer’s and their family members. We hope that this customer never needs to use our service, but if she ever does her son will know that his mother is protected by the best medical alert system, Life Alert.

    In 2017 I had right knee replacement and left knee replacement in 2018. The incident happened when I attempted to lift the watering can which was full and too heavy and I lost my balance, falling backwards.     I subscribed to the Life Alert service for my elderly parent who lived alone, and I specifically asked what would happen to the service if hospitalization was necessary. The agent lied and said that we could cancel the service without penalty if that happened. As it turned out, my parent had to be hospitalized for two months, but when I called to cancel Life Alert, I was it could only be canceled if my parent could not go back home again. When this requirement was met (since an Assisted Living arrangement was the only solution the doctors felt would be safe for my parent), Life Alert then imposed a NEW requirement for cancellation - a letter from the Assisted Living Facility - a very strategic tactic to prolong the contract and the charging of monthly $70 fee since, of course, this would all take some time to procure!

    I then obtained and sent the letter, but then I was told that I had to also "arrange" for the pick-up of the equipment before they could fully cancel the service. **Note that the phone agents had NEVER ADVISED me before of this important step which seems to now have been the first one necessary for cancellation. This is again because LIfe Alert's primary goal is not to provide emergency response service to the elderly, but rather to prolong the contract and the monthly charges as LONG AS POSSIBLE.

    Finally, the equipment was picked up and service eventually canceled four months after the hospitalization, but not before Life Alert had SWINDLED a poor, ailing old woman out of an additional $279.60 in fees for services it had never provided. Life Alert's carefully delayed conveying of important information for cancellation was strategically designed to defraud. Evila, Jonathan, and Jose are all liars, and the Life Alert company they work for is an UNETHICAL AND FRAUDULENT one to be avoided at all costs. DO NOT do business with Life Alert.

    Life Alert sympathizes with Rick of Los Angeles, as we understand the challenges and confusion that comes when an elderly loved one is being hospitalized and/or having to move into assisted living. When our customer was first admitted into a hospital, Rick did not know how long she would going to be there so we stopped the billing for one month until he had a better idea of what was going on with his mother.

    Life Alert also understands that circumstances change with our customers, that is why we have a cancellation clause that states if our customer has to go into a nursing home or receives 24/7 professional care, we will immediately cancel the account without any penalties – we only need a note faxed or emailed to us from the facility stating our customer is now their patient – thus releasing Life Alert of our obligation to the patient. This is standard procedure in our industry, and is not a NEW requirement as it is noted clearly in our agreement which Rick had signed.

    Unfortunately, the delay in cancellation was not at Life Alert’s end. As soon as we received the information needed, we immediately cancelled the account and paid to have our equipment sent back to us.

    Your representative Kevin ** hung up on me, & told me not to call back when I told him his conversations were scripted. On EACH of 3 calls he repeated... "Calls are routed through an outside company, and if I wanted I could order a George Foreman grill from them while placing the emergency call." He repeated things they do that others don't. I continued to tell him I took good notes on my 1st call, and didn't need him to repeat it again. He insisted he wasn't a salesman because he didn't get paid more if I purchased & took offense when I called him one. He may represent the company, but not in a friendly manner. He put down the other devices, while trying to push Life Alert. I get that, but he was rude. I asked about the brochure that I called about on the 1st call (still didn't get it). On the 1st & 3rd call he told me that it had nothing of interest, just a few pictures and things as seen online.

    It was as though they didn't want to pay the postage to send it with the way he tried to talk me out of wanting to see it before making a decision. When he ended the call he said, "you're not listening to me, so don't ever call again," & he hung up!! I was listening, but told him I was dealing with a death in the family within the call, and was getting frustrated with his repeated conversations. He hung up when I said it was scripted.

However, on December 24 2017, my aunt randomly got a phone call from Life Alert asking her, “Do you have an emergency?” Life Alert got a translator on the phone and asked her again in Arabic (her native language), “Do you have an emergency?” and my aunt immediately said, “No, I’m perfectly fine. I’m not sure why you are calling. Thank you. All is fine.” My aunt had never pressed the Life Alert button to begin with.

    About an hour later, Life Alert sent someone who came to her apartment and KICKED DOWN her door! My aunt was peacefully sleeping in her bedroom on Christmas Eve when Life Alert broke into her house and practically scared her half to death. Furthermore, Life Alert’s emergency responder broke my aunt’s apartment door and the apartment management company is charging my aunt $500 in broken door damages. My aunt was completely terrified and immediately unplugged the Life Alert system and has not used it since that day. My aunt is simply asking to cancel the service because she no longer uses it.

    When I called Life Alert to ask them to cancel the service, Life Alert refused, claiming “You are contractually obligated to stay with our service for three years and pay the $49.95 monthly fee all the way through September 2020.” Not only is my aunt completely terrified of Life Alert because they broke into her home after she specifically told them that “everything was fine,” but now she is being charged $500 because of Life Alert’s damages to her door and they want to charge her $49.95 monthly for the three years (49.95 X 36 months = $1,798.20!!!) for a system that she definitely will never use. Life Alert is refusing to cancel the contract and furthermore is refusing to pay for the $500 of damages after kicking/breaking down my aunt’s door.

    Furthermore, if your elderly loved ones do not speak English, do not trust Life Alert’s translators because they did not understand when my aunt said “everything is fine” and they still came to her apartment and broke down her door. Please be careful of signing up with a company that does not respect the elderly and is blindly robbing elderly of their dignity and rights.

    All of our calls are recorded for quality assurance. We performed a thorough investigation which resulted in the following:

    We received an emergency signal from our customer. We called the customer to ask if she had an emergency, she repeated the word “emergency” and then hung up. Per our legal commitment to our customer, we contacted emergency services and relayed the information verbatim adding that there was a language barrier and that we were not sure whether there was an actual emergency or not. We proceeded to call the responsible contact person for this account but there was no answer. We left a voice mail explaining exactly what happened. Had that person called the family member and verified her wellness, and then contacted us back, we could have attempted to cancel the dispatch.

    Life Alert responded appropriately and timely to an emergency signal. We have no control or authority over the local emergency response departments in our customers’ counties. When a customer joins the Life Alert family we make every effort to work with them regarding gaining access to the home, such as giving a lockbox combination to the authorities so they can gain access. Although we do have a variety of dispatchers who speak various languages, we do not guarantee they will be available to speak to the customer and we do not have translators on staff; the complainant is mistaken in many of his accusations towards Life Alert.

    I purchased the system for my mom, recently recovering from multiple strokes. System set-up, installation everything went great, system up and running. As it turns out my mom also became eligible for Medicare Services approximately 3 months into the contract. Medicare provides their own system and monitoring. This is not an option for Medicare. You have to use their system. She now gets 7 days a week visit and assistance with 24/7 monitoring. I called and spoke with retention that my mom's situation has changed and no longer need the service understanding I'm out the $198 for the equipment and install. As it turns out I'm also obligated for another approximate $2,895.

    My perception when sold to me was if her circumstances change I could cancel. Circumstances defined is in a nursing home. Retention Dept wasn't rude but certainly not flexible at all. Read through many other reviews and I'm sure Life Alerts responses are justified in some cases but very very defensive overall. Not sure what to do here; have attorney reviewing contract which I'm sure is locked solid so I'll be out $3k. Not happy at all and certainly will not recommend unless they work something out that is fair. Lesson learned, folks have an out or choose someone else because "life" does happen with no flexibility. Life Alert - when you respond let me know how much to send for closure to this colossal mistake I made. Thanks much.
