Do not buy any products from this company. The bracelets don't work! This company has so many problems that there aren't enough characters available in this post to list them all. If you want piece of mind do not buy anything from this company!

1.) Their customer service stinks - I called three times to ask to have the paid invoice sent to me so I could get it reimbursed. The CSR said they would do it on a specific day and not follow through. I had to call them 3 times to have them e-mail it to me.

2.) The system doesn't work consistently - I visited my parents and tested both bracelets - the first bracelet worked but it took 5 minutes before someone came on the voice box asking if someone needed help. That is far too long. I tested the second bracelet (it lit up when I hit the button) and no one came on the voice box. I checked it twice - no reply! I then called the customer support line in a panic and got a response from someone that kept fading in and out - it was as if someone on the other line was in the Philippines. They couldn't fix the problem. Now I was FURIOUS! I called the customer service number and asked for the phone number to ** (CEO) and the CSR said that they didn't have his number and that no she didn't have a phone number for the HQ in California.

It is a poorly run company with a terrible product and terrible support - don't trust your parents to Alert-!

My Dad had been experiencing shortness of breath when walking short distances along with dizziness. When I took him home just the short distance from the car to his apartment he experienced this. Taking his blood pressure it was 178/76. Pressed the button and asked for EMS. His pulse rate was in the 30's!! Your personnel on the monitor was very polite, helpful and everyone on the list received a phone call. (I do need to update my cell number). My father was admitted to the hospital and a pacemaker was implanted. He is now home and "feeling great." He did not realized how badly he was feeling until he was 'better.' So glad we have you and the quick response time you provided. With his pulse rate in the hospital of 28, this being told to us the lowest they have had, who knows what would have happen, and I fear the worst. Thank you so much for your services.

    Updated review: Dec. 31, 2014

Two days after filing my complaint, I finally was given confirmation that Alert One would clear the erroneous charges off my account. I accept their apology. I still feel they need to correct their customer service issues and their renewal tactics. No one should have to file a formal complaint or report a company to the Better Business Bureau to get their attention. Unfortunately, I could never recommend this company due to these issues, even though we had no issues with the monitoring system itself.

    Original Review: Dec. 28, 2014

I bought the system for my 85 year old mother who lives alone in February 2013. My sister decided to get her a different system from another company in September 2013. I assumed, if I did not renew in February 2014 that would be the end of the agreement with Alert One. I was wrong. They contacted me in March 2014 and said I owed money. I told them of my plans of not renewing. They told me if I returned the equipment I would not be billed. They were going to email me a postage paid label for return. It took over two weeks and two more phone calls and emails from me to receive the label. I sent it back the very day I received the label.

Alert One admits they received their equipment in April 2014. I did not hear from them at all, until December of 2014 when they said I owed for a whole year and claimed I was being billed all along. Then they wanted $70 to close the account, which I refused for the simple fact I was originally told I would owe nothing if I returned the equipment. Why am I being billed for them taking so long to get me the label? Now they are threatening me and my mother with collection for over $300 for a whole year of service. They claim their agreement allows this. Their monitoring system worked great and I have no complaints in that department. Just their horrible customer service in billing. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. They have been a nightmare.

We ordered the service for my parents, because my parents lived alone. Dad was in bad health, but of sharp mind. Mom's healthy but has Alzheimer's back in 2013. Within a couple months, my Dad died. I contacted Alert1 to cancel, almost immediately, and was told it was prepaid, with nothing refundable. My Mother was unable to use it because she first went to my brothers house where they didn't have a landline, then to an assisted living facility. We sent in a copy of his death certificate. No mention was made of sending the equipment in.

A year passes. My Mom gets a bill for $300 on her credit card! I call. Was told they have the right to auto renew, plus had to have the equipment back, but they couldn't send me the address to send it in until they got a power of attorney for my Mom. I sent it in immediately. I got the address, went to a mailing company, and sent the equipment back the following day. I sent numerous emails from which I got no response, asking if it had been received. No answers. No return calls. The credit card company continues to bill my Mom.

I finally got the rep I'd originally spoke with, Lydia **, and who I'd sent all the emails to. She claimed not to have gotten any other later emails, even though I still had copies showing where I'd been sending emails to her, asking for a response, for months. She confirmed I had the correct email address. She said they had to have had the equipment back within 30 days of automatic renewal to cancel. Even though the initial call about the problem was within the time frame, the package with the equipment arrived 8 days past the 30 days. MERRY CHRISTMAS ALERT1. I'm going to pay the bill for my Mom. But I don't know how you sleep at night.

I would like to let everyone know how disappointed I am with this company. On 11/26 I had problem with my door and tried to remove the lock box which was provided by this company. The combination that I thought was correct would not unlock box. Called the only number I could get an answer at which happened to be the dispatch center. I explained my problem and asked what the number was that they had for paramedics. They quickly informed me I would have to call customer service. I tried to call but they were closed and not until 11/28 at which time my husband had to remove the doorknob to take lock box off. 11/28 I called customer service to cancel service because the combination number they provided was one number off which means had there been an emergency, paramedics would not have been able to get in.

I told them if they gave me 3 months free service I would stay with them. I was told someone would get back to me. After 3 phone call someone finally got back to me and said because I get billed quarterly they could not receive 3 free months, I would have to be billed yearly for them to provide any free months. I just wanted to let anyone else that has a lock box to be sure it works because this company doesn't really care after being a customer for 14 months. Buyer beware.

I purchased this unit for my 89 year old MIL who lived alone. A couple of months later, a couple moved in but there are still times when she is alone for a few hours. Since she wears her alert religiously, we keep the alert active. She has fallen once during the night and she screamed and the dog barked. She did not push her alarm but her caregivers were able to assist her and get paramedic assistance. The Alert1 system has gone off three times in the past 2 months during the night. Although it is extremely loud, the caregiver did not hear it go off. We question whether it really did since it is so loud. We were told that it must have gotten set off by accidentally laying on it. That brings me to last night. I got a call at 1:11a.m. I instructed the caller to disregard the call because she has a live-in care-giver and she would be aware if she fell. I gave the care-giver's name and #. I received a call 3 minutes later that they couldn't reach the caregiver. I said "Do not dispatch emergency services. I will reach the caregiver." I sent a text to caregiver but felt that there was no need to pursue the situation. I received another call from Alert1 checking. I told them to disregard call and I would follow up.

I called caregiver and while I was on the phone, she checked and sure enough MIL was sound asleep on her back. And while I was on the phone with her, the paramedics came as Alert1 had disregarded my instructions and dispatched the emergency call. We are not sure if we should cancel the service and install a baby monitor for caregiver or leave the system just in case she actually falls and remembers how to push the button. Whether it is a false alarm or a real alarm, Alert1 needs to take instructions from the person designated to give instructions.

Most importantly my mother was satisfied with the service you provided to her. We, her daughters, were frightened, but glad to have received direct notification of her emergency. Although the emergency medical team had the wrong address, which delayed them getting to my mother, everything else went well. I am happy to report that my mother is doing great. Thank you.

Company does not send any sort of notice or renewal fee. They claim they just don't. Common courtesy demands that when you are expecting to automatically charge a person's credit card... that you inform them of such charges in advance... especially since we've paid for a years worth of service in advance!!!! Plus they will not cancel service (after charging us automatically $311.40 with no notice that they were going to do this!), without the return of equipment!!! So states Lydia at the Waynes Port, PA call center.

My sister, brother & I chose Alert1 over many other services. We've had this service for awhile & had to use it a couple of times over the past year or so. The service seemed to be responsive & caring at the time it was needed. Until now, the billing was fine & paid on time. Our mother had to go to a nursing facility in February due to a fall. The physicians told us her recovery may be 4-6 weeks. I called Alert1 & explained our 4-6 week situation & asked for service to be suspended. At the time of the call, I was told that a $12.58 credit would be applied, but I thought it would go toward the $83 quarterly bill. There was NO mention of any hold fees, I promise you! I was told that we only had to push the red button if we wanted service reactivated.

Fast forward, our mother is still in a facility. I assumed service was still suspended until I received an $83 quarterly bill in today's mail. When I called, I was surprised to be told that there was a $15 hold fee each month! Our mother was in a nursing home... $15 per month while the unit sat collecting dust...really? I assume this is the monthly rental fee for the use of their equipment whether it's active or not. When Sarah returned my call after 8pm tonight, I was told that I was all wrong. I take very specific notes & made no notations about a $15 monthly hold fee. I can't wait to return the equipment & terminate this service!!! Hopefully our mother will return home. When that happens, it won't be Alert1! Oh well... now I know. Beware!!!

I live in North Carolina and was visiting my best friend (78 years young) in Oklahoma. He had experienced a few incidents where I thought a medical alert system would be appropriate for him but he had always been reluctant to wear any type of necklace. After talking to him in great length, he agreed that he should have a system. I immediately began researching online since I decided that I would purchase it for him and make the annual bill his annual Christmas present. After reviewing numerous companies, I soon learned that no company had everything I wanted, but Alert1 offered more features that I wanted than any other. The purchase was made.

I have called Alert1 on a few occasions over these past two years and they have always been very helpful, advising me as to whether my friend was continuing to test the system each month. After continuous lecturing, he continued to refuse to wear his necklace. Most recently, he experienced a bad fall in his kitchen and was unable to reach the alert system, passed out and remained on the floor for nearly 24 hours until his maid arrived and summoned assistance. After recovering from the hospital, he assured me that he would wear his necklace religiously and has today. I immediately contacted Alert1 and inquired as to whether "fall detection" was ever going to be a part of their alert system. I was thrilled to find out that it just became available for only $3.00 extra per month and ordered it on the spot. The necklace is being sent to my friend as we speak. Can't say enough great things about this company. So many features including range extenders, lock boxes, and now, automatic fall detection. Always available to answer any questions you may have and always cheerful and polite. Thanks for all the great service. Look forward to a long relationship.

This issue has finally been resolved as of 5/5/14. Without Amber, the Customer Service Manager, interjecting herself in a process that was clearly upside down, I doubt I ever would have gotten it resolved without a lot more effort on my part.

I will say that the service my Mom received was excellent in care and responsiveness and I always felt better that someone was always available to her as she lived alone until this recent incident.

With that said, Alert1 was easy to do business with as they took my money very easily and on time each year, but very difficult to end doing business with as it was a lot harder for them to give back.

    Original Review: April 25, 2014

First let me state I never do customer reviews but given my frustration level at trying to get this resolved in a timely manner, I need to try and get assistance from someone. Very difficult with a full time job and then have to hassle with getting a refund and making sure my Mom is being taken care of properly. Unfortunately, my Mother's health has degenerated to point that she is unable to care for herself any more. As a result, she asked me to cancel the Alert1 service I had been providing for her since 2009.

I contacted Customer Service for instructions on 4/4/14. I got out the original contract I had signed with Alert1 dated 10/06/2009. The annual fee paid during the duration of service was $355.52 or a monthly rate of $29.63, not what was stated to me in my email to Customer Service. Secondly, the contract clearly states in the Contract Termination clause that upon cancellation, I would receive a full refund for unused months remaining on the annual contract. I notified Alert1 on 4/4/14 and Alert1 was in receipt of the undamaged equipment on 4/8/14. With this information, I am due a refund for 6 months of unused service times the monthly rate of the contract of $29.63 equaling $177.78 per the expressed terms of my contract.

To date in spite of several emails and phone calls to Alert1, I have been unsuccessful in getting this appropriately resolved with Alert1 and I am respectfully requesting that the terms of my contract be honored and a full/prorated refund be issued to my credit card today for the full amount due me as stated in the preceding paragraph. I sincerely hope we can appropriately resolve this today and without further action on my part and I truly appreciate all assistance that someone can provide. Thank you.

The next month they billed her again for the service. I called the 800# and was told that it was not cancelled. They said at that point they would cancel the service and that they would send me a UPS sticker to ship it back to the company, which I did. Then I received another bill for the next month. I called again and was told that they had to receive the equipment before they stopped the billing cycle. Bottom line, MY Mom was billed two extra months due to their failure to explain cancellation procedures. This company is a RIP-OFF!!!!!

I had Alert1 for my elderly mother who lived alone, although down the street from me. Although I was nearby, I couldn't be with her every minute and Alert1 filled in the gaps and gave me peace of mind. In December, as I returned home from Christmas shopping, both my phone and cell phone started ringing. It was Alert1 telling me my mother had pressed the button and paramedics were en route. Because of this phone call, I was able to meet the paramedics at her home, follow to the hospital, and most importantly of all, be at her side when she died a few hours later. I cannot even express what that means to me and to my entire family. I urge anyone who cares for an elderly loved one to subscribe to this service right away. It saves lives, yes, but it also does so much more.

I tried both Alert 1 and First Alert for my 89 year old mom. Originally ordered Alert 1 and decided to switch because there was no immediate Spanish capability when the rep called replying to a distress signal. My aunt has First Alert, and I guess because it's located in S. California, the reps speak Spanish more readily. But when I got the First Alert contract, I saw that the 3-year agreement would be more difficult to get out of than what the sales rep said. I had several conversations with the First Alert people, including one of the managers, and I never felt like I was being treated like a customer (except with the over-promising sales rep).

So back to Alert 1. Two months after activating, my mom had a stroke. She was semi-conscious when we arrived at the house, and she was wearing the bracelet alert, but I guess she did not have the ability, mentally or physically, to press the button. Five weeks later, we were compelled to place her in an ALF. I called Alert 1 and they asked to return the equipment, and they were considerate enough to refund part of the yearly membership fee.

Here's my advice to caretakers looking at a home monitoring system: most systems do the same thing, but I suggest also getting an outside lock box for the key; don't commit to any contract, there's no need to and you may regret it later on; and pay it month to month, the future is unknown, no matter how healthy our folks look at the moment. I had a better customer experience with Alert 1 than with First Alert, and I recommend them.

Dear Mr. Boue, thank you for writing such a kind and accurate review of our services. We recognize that requiring a three-year agreement is financially better for the companies that do require it. But we have resisted this industry trend because it is clearly worse for our Members, who need flexibility and choice. As our CEO sometimes reminds us, "We are not going to heaven by forcing dollars out of senior citizens' pockets." She lives alone and has no pets in a doorman supervised building in New York City. Surveillance tape shows no entry to her apartment while she was not home. The EMS was notified and since there was no answer at her door, they broke the door down causing over $5,000 in damages. Her insurance company covered most of the losses, but she was still responsible for the $500 deductible. I asked Alert1 to simply cover the $500 deductible and refund the year we paid in advance of $311.40 as this device was clearly defective.

They told me that the contract we signed does not cover "forced entry." I believe forced entry should mean after the device was actually triggered by an individual in need of help and not "forced entry" due to a defective device. Customer service and management refused us compensation and asked if we would like to re-read the contract we signed. How can they sell devices that can be randomly activated??

Excellent customer service rep helped setting up the account and then communicated with the user in another state to make sure her needs and concerns are met. Alert1 provides the relief to the family of the user that she'll be well taken care of in case of an emergency. The price of this service and requirements exceed those of perhaps a bigger named (and advertised) company in the industry that locks you into an unnecessary and more expensive minimum timed service/contract for a service the user may not like and use. But that unknown isn't known until after you are a locked into a contract. Alert1 doesn't have that silly requirement and restriction that tells me Alert1 genuinely is more concerned about the user's well being than the big money company who apparently has a higher priority in making money. Thanks to Alert1 for providing excellent service and assistance to our family members who was badly in need of such care.

Alert1 notified me that he had called and that he was unhurt, just unable to get up. I told them to hold the call for an ambulance until I arrived, which they did. All told, Dad waited for the ambulance about 20 minutes, but when I notified Alert1 that I was there, it was only 5 minutes until they arrived. The ambulance EMTs were great and took Dad to the hospital; en route they took his blood sugar and found they were extremely low. They supplied him with some stabilizing sugar. All in all, our experience with Alert1 was far and away better than the service and compassion we received in the ER.

I was looking for an alert system for my husband when I'm out of the house and Alert1 seemed to be the best that would fit our needs. It was easy to set up over the phone and I paid for the whole year to get the discount. I received the equipment very quickly and the set up was easy. When I tested it out the first time, the person was very helpful and let my husband go to the farthest part of the house and test how loud he had to talk in order to be heard (he has a very soft voice). So, I feel very secure with Alert1 in our home.

Six weeks ago, my 84-year-old mother who lives alone fell. We didn't have a system at that time and were fortunate that she and I were talking on the phone when she fell. It was a Saturday and I live a few houses away. So I knew what had happened and was able to respond quickly. While my mother was in the hospital and an in-patient physical rehabilitation facility, I happened to visit with an older friend who has fell quite a few times this year. She uses and recommended Alert1 because she feels safe with this system. She can get help if needed and it allows her and her husband to keep their individual independence with activities outside of the home.

I am so glad that she recommended this company and this system. After comparing several companies, I called Alert1. The system arrived within a day or two, without extra shipping fees, and before my mother's discharge. The monthly fee is less than the other companies which I compared and the equipment seems to be a higher quality. My mother calls them her "help buttons". When we have tested the system several times (which Alert1 recommends to help people become comfortable using a system in their home), the response time has been excellent. About three weeks ago, we were able to bring my mother back to the house where she has lived since she was age 17. Her Alert1 system is helping us to keep her in her home without the worry of another fall, especially when I'm at work or chauffeuring my son to activities. It has been a real asset to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our family.

When my friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I again reached out to Alert1 for peace of mind. Unfortunately, I had to send it back in the first 30 days, due to my friend’s inability to be left alone soon after her diagnoses. I work at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. The monthly fee is reasonable and it’s easy for seniors to be able to afford having one in their home. After many years of gentle persuasion, I finally convinced my mother to order an emergency pendant from Alert 1. The ordering experience was painless, and the device was less expensive than some of the others we considered. The Alert 1 representative was very helpful in explaining the different plans. I ordered my mom’s pendant on a Tuesday and it arrived two days later. We immediately installed the device. It was easy to set up, and Alert 1 was available by phone to answer our questions and to help us set up the device. They also went through a testing procedure with us to be sure it was working properly.

Less than two days later, my mother had a minor heart attack and a blood clot in her arm. She was unable to get to the phone but she was able to activate her Alert 1 pendant. Everything worked as promised. Emergency responders arrived almost immediately and were able to grant themselves access to her home by retrieving a key we’d placed in an Alert 1 lockbox on the back door. Subsequently, Alert 1 called the contact individuals they had on file in case of an emergency, one of them being me. My mother was taken to the hospital where the blood clot was successfully removed from her arm during an emergency surgery, and she is currently recovering.

Had it not been for the Alert 1 pendant, she would certainly have died, because the heart attack and blood clot had rendered her helpless. I can’t say enough good things about Alert 1 and the service they provide. I have already recommended it to friends and family, because I know it works. It worked for my mom, and it saved her life. I started the plan in April and my mother passed away, unexpectedly in July. I was told that I had missed my three months' trial where I could cancel and that I would not be reimbursed at all, not even a prorated amount. Why is it that Alert1 thinks it's okay to add salt to a wound by telling you that regardless that you can use it for your deceased relative anymore, you must still pay. If I cancel my car insurance, my registration, etc., early I am refunded a prorated rate so why do they think it's okay to not return a prorated amount to a client. This company does not care about their clients because if they did, they would not hold anyone hostage to a ridiculous policy. This is absolutely disgusting!

    Updated review: Oct. 31, 2012

On Oct 2, 2012 I wrote a very unhappy review about Alert 1, at the time I was very unhappy with the company and felt that we had been misled and treated unfair. In June of this year my mother-in-law purchased Alert 1 and 30 days to the date she was killed in a car accident when an ambulance hit her. I felt that Alert 1 should have refunded her (us) money since she had paid for the year. Due to their cancellation policy, whomever I talked to say that they could not do that. I was very upset and again felt that was wrong.

Since then I have had several phone calls from Corporate and they have read my letter, they decided because of the unfortunate circumstance to refund us the full amount of what my mother-in-law paid. I feel that they did the right thing and that if I had talked to the right people who knew what had happened, this matter would have been taken care of from the beginning. I'm very happy with Alert 1 and how the company handled our problem. I hope that this will help someone looking at reviews and go with this company. Sometimes it just takes a little while longer to get to the right persons for things to happen and I'm very happy with what happened and the outcome. Thanks Again Alert 1 for all you did.

    Original Review: Oct. 2, 2012

My brother-in-law talked my mother-in-law in getting Alert1 because she was 88 and lived alone. She signed up and paid for the year on June 6, 2012 and she got killed in a car accident one month to the date she signed up. We contacted them that evening and told them what happened and asked them to turn it off because there was no one in the house that would be needing it and we would be returning it for a refund. We were told how to send it back and that we would also receive a shipping code to send it back. We packed up everything that came with it and sent it back and even paid the shipping. Well, a couple of weeks later, we received a letter saying that they would not be able to refund the money because she didn’t cancel within the 30 days given by the company to do so.

What?! How did we know that she was going to be killed in a car accident on the 30th day? How do you not refund the money that she paid a whole year and she died on July 6, 2012, which is one month from when she got it? I can't believe that they would do that. Again, how do you plan someone’s death so that you cancel within 30 days? That is really one of the dumbest things I have heard and I really can’t believe they said that to us. I feel they have cheated us and people need to know this. I would not get this for my mother in fear that when she does die, they will not refund any money that she paid. How unfair is this? I feel that something needs to change with their policy. If she wouldn’t have gotten killed, she would still be using it, but she can’t. So they should refund us the year that she paid minus the 30 days she had it. I would think twice of using this company!

Our experience with Alert1 has been similar to the other positive reviews here. Two years ago, on the advice of her doctor, we decided to look into an emergency alert system for my elderly mom. After some research, Alert1 sounded the best so we went with them and just want to report that it was the right decision. From the start, Alert1 was easy to work with. The equipment came immediately, instructions were clear and the set-up pretty straightforward. On those occasions when we'd speak with Alert1 employees, they were all friendly, helpful and professional. We weren't good about testing the system regularly but they would call with gentle reminders.

Last month, we had to cancel service. The quarterly fee was debited before we returned the equipment. When I spoke with their billing department, the rep said that since the equipment had been received, the charge would be reversed and sure enough, it was taken care of. That is the way to do good business! I can't tell you how many companies I've had to call again and again to get them to take care of something right. With Alert1, there was never any of that frustration. Overall, we were very pleased with their service and would use them again if needed.

I am very satisfied with Alert 1. Being almost 91 years old and living alone, it is nice to know there is help at the push of a button. I also like that they alert me once a month if I forget to check in to make sure all is okay. Your employers are very courteous and pleasant. Thank you.

We have been using Alert1 for my 95-year-old father who is residing at home with the help of caregivers and Alert1. The system has worked very well for him and his family who are not always available during the day. The responders have been very competent and cordial whenever we call to ask a question or change phone numbers. In addition, when the alarm has sounded, the staff calls the home within 30 seconds. This has been wonderful. Thank you, Alert1, for being part of my father's care team.

My wife and I have been customers for the past year and take great comfort in having your monitoring system. I work full time and my wife, who has a disability and experiences vertigo, is home alone in an 1800 sq. ft. home. Before leaving for work, I always check to see that she is wearing the signalling device around her neck. We take great comfort in this protection and your swift response when we test the signal monthly from various locations in the house. We are so satisfied. I keep your brochures on my work desk for visitors.

I ordered this for my mother who is elderly. She occasionally presses the button by accident. The operators are prompt in responding when the button is pushed and they are very courteous. They don't make her feel guilty about accidentally pressing the button. My mother trusts them to be there when she needs them.
