Ambit energy and free gas in California. I receive a check each month regarding gas bills. I also have referred to many others who also get their gas for free by making referrals to others. They also have a travel rewards, free travel for paying my bill. I was never offered that from my other utility company. I love the savings and the company.

I've been a customer & consultant for Ambit for 1 1/2 years. It's the CUSTOMERS' RESPONSIBILITY to renew terms to receive lowest rate available. This could be done numerous times throughout the term period. Through their personal website. No hidden costs. No cancellation fees! I've referred numerous people and receive FREE energy on my supply side of my bill every month! Last month $190+ credit. Most reviews I've read here are due to the CUSTOMER not renewing their terms. That will happen with any 3rd party provider. Only difference here is Ambit allows you to do it through your OWN website with no early termination fees and no cancellation fees.

I have been a loyal Ambit Energy customer going on 3 years now. I am thrilled to say I'm paying the lowest rate available, earning travel rewards with every kilowatt burned. Last year alone, I received $1,200 in checks for earning free energy through their referral program. I couldn't be more happy! I love Ambit Energy!

I live in Southern California, where it is not deregulated as of yet. My parents however live in northern California and have been receiving free natural gas for the past 9 months simply because they shared the opportunity with a couple friends and family members who were interested in paying less for their energy bill. Best part is that it is free to switch! Definitely recommend switching to Ambit to anybody. If they don't like the savings/rewards or are unsatisfied for any reason then they can switch back to their incumbent provider without any cancellation fees.

I have been an Ambit Energy customer for around 6 years. I started saving money on the first bill! The savings got incredible once I benefited from the customer referral program that is a free benefit to all customers. Once I had referred 15 customers that also wanted to save (there is no time limit to accomplish this goal), I began to receive a credit on my bill equal to the average of my referred customers' usage. This happened in September of 2013. Since then my bills have ranged between $8-40. This is for a 2500 square foot home on the hot South Texas US/Mexico border. The customer service is amazing! I've been so satisfied and am happy to recommend Ambit Energy to anyone and everyone I know.

AMBIT is an outstanding company. They save us several hundred dollars a year on our gas bill alone. Their customer service agents are always friendly and willing to help. We will always use this company and can't wait until solar gets here. One day electric will deregulate and we will be saving even more.

Same as previous reviewers’, bills keep getting higher and higher. Finally figured that the Ambit is charging almost 3x Nicor's rate. Nicor advised that our bill for Jan. should have been $210 (saving their email) and Ambit charged us $536. I called and said the letter was sent, I didn't extent - I NEVER GOT THE LETTER. It's a scam. Tried to negotiate with them lowering the rate, giving me some credit, and they are unwilling to work with you. Finally told them, just cancel the service... they said it will take at least 2 billing cycles. Well, I called Nicor and they said their service will starts on the same day! No longer dealing with Ambit, but I am going to write to BBB asking for a refund in difference for that one month in the amount of over $300. I could go through all the bills since the spike in rate... but I'll be happy to get $300 back.

This may save one money over a years time as they guarantee the lowest rate plus 2% savings. BUT....... MOST people are clueless to know they have to renew their plan every year or else they will be spending more. The going therm rate is 0.40 right now. WE WERE PAYING 0.9289 so, each month was way over the going rate!!!! And our electric as well so over the last THREE YEARS, we potentially paid $3,000 MORE than we COULD have paid with another company. Extra melt ticked off as Ambit NEVER CALLED US to inform us of this high price, so.... they just sit back and collect on this Outrageous and no integrity!!! AND VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. They will do NOTHING in terms of any reimbursement nor do they care about the bad press they may get.

I do not recall receiving a letter telling me that we had to renew our agreement or our rates would go up, paying the month to month rate. As it turned out we paid over $700 more for gas and electric with Ambit than National Grid would have charged us. Shame on Ambit for setting people up to scam their friends! Nice people I know are selling this raw deal to people they know and love. Ambit takes advantage of people's trust and busy schedules and rips them off to the max. Stay away from this company!

I noticed that my energy bill doubled last month ($600 - February 2015) so I checked the Ambit website and saw that my old plan expired and they placed me on their highest rate plan. I called to fix the issue and to update my account information since I was recently divorced. After waiting on hold for a long time I finally spoke to a rep who advised that my ex-wife would have to call them to cancel the plan. My ex-wife, fortunately was willing to cooperate but she had to wait on hold for an hour before speaking with someone only to be told that she would have to fill out a form that they would mail to her. Wishing to expedite the process she requested a form be faxed to her. After three business days it still has not been faxed. I'll never do business with them again.

The facts/my opinion below: My bill was approx. $800.00 more than PSE&G would have been, for two months in a row. That's approx. $1,600.00!!!! They charged me OVER what PSE&G would have charged for only 2 months. When I called Ambit they said that it was because my rate was variable and that's the rate they now charged me and that they would not adjust anything. I was out of luck!!! Gas prices dropped this year but not at AMBIT!!! DO NOT USE THEM!!!

For the past two months ambit has over doubled my bill. My gas bill alone last month was over $600. When I called last month they told me that they sent me 3 letters stating that I needed to re enroll into a program to be at the lowest rate possible. I never received one of these letters and I know this for a fact because my husband used to be an ambit consultant and received monthly checks from ambit. When I re enrolled last month I was told it would go into effect 24-48 hours. Once again my bill is over double because it takes a few billing cycles is what I was told today and the last rep gave me false information. I wish there was a way to get my money back.

I was urged by a friend to use Ambit as my energy supplier, and so far, three years in, I am pretty happy. I started on a variable rate, but when I noticed the variable increasing I switched to a fixed for 12 months. Once the 12 months were up, Ambit emailed me in plenty of time to renew onto another 12 month product. I am not saving a ton of money, but I am saving about $20 a month on a $180 monthly bill. I have accumulated numerous travel points, and feel very good about the service I am being provided. If someone is not paying attention to their rate on anything that is variable, (credit card, car payment, etc...) it is not the fault of the company but the consumer.

I have experienced the same problem as everyone else. They get you hooked with the cheap rates and then after you think you have a good deal, raise them to almost 3 times the regular market rate without notifying you. I was so disgusted when this happened that I called to cancel. I didn't even ask why the rate jumped but I can tell you that after reading everyone else's experience, I didn't get a letter either. The rep asked me if I wanted to renew my contract and I said "Hell no...why would I want to do that!!!" Lesson Learned. If anyone approaches you to join Ambit, stay away and say NO!!!

This company's rebate programs are definitely a scam. Despite calling several times asking where my rebate was and being told to wait month after month, I finally cancelled today. Then, I was that the paperwork for my rebate was never processed and in order for me to collect, I would have to wait another 7 weeks. Keep in mind that my account was opened 9/13, renewed 9/14, and it’s 3/15... and my rebate was never processed??? Stay away from these people. When you do call customer service, minimum wait time is 20+ minutes. They always state that call volumes are high no matter what time of day you call. All reps who answer the phone are foreign, hard to understand, and are not nice....So, to recap, if you are being sold on the premise that you will save money on energy with these people, you will not.

I have had a great experience with Ambit Energy and so have my family and friends - all saving money. It seems all the complaints have been that people's rates went up when they didn't renew their guaranteed savings and they never received a notice. Not all "junk" mail is junk. All it takes to renew is 3 minutes by phone or email. Ambit has over 1 million satisfied customers - seems a shame that a small percentage that overlooked their renewal have blown this out of proportion. I say get Ambit's savings (and renew each year) and keep saving. Pretty simple.

Yes, we're talking of how you learn about the business and the value plan. Their person (consultant) wants to show you this company's outlook too. It's Ambit's and consultant's duty to provide exceptional experience for their customers. Customers that review the information and choose to be on a value plan are helping the consultant in forming their own business. Customers have a website to review, renew, and cancel this energy supplier. Not one person seem to mention that joining this energy supplier you have had registered and logged in your own customer site. Let alone review it from time to time and anytime.
Yes, you get a letter a month out before your anniversary to renew plan. You receive a rebate check for the difference of your incumbent's yearly cost. You can enroll that rebate check to the next annual of sign up. What I see most is why people are forgetting why they signed up. They're helping that person (consultant) in building trust with you as a customer.
Staying on the savings plan is a 12 month plan. Take a look at your customer website, or register your customer number, firstly and foremost. You as a customer, can refer people's that you know to value of the energy program right on the (your) customer website. Earn energy credits and they could do the same. Establish a relationship with your new energy provider and learn ways to save. Not only an energy supplier but your incumbent (delivery) for ways to save. And that information is always available as well. If you feel the annual sign up is a nuisance you're entitled. Just make sure you review your information for 3 seconds of assurance.

They are the worst company to deal with. As with other consumers, they purportedly sent a letter of rate increases/contract expiration. I never received this paperwork. They said they sent it to all customers 2 YEARS AGO!!! The only reason any of this caught my attention was when I reviewed my December 2014 statement for payment in January that I flipped out at a bill for over $630 where my bills usually run well below half that amount for a typical winter month here in upstate New York.
I called, complained and called and complained again to no satisfaction and they were not willing to help me in any way. I cancelled them as my ESCO immediately. Told it would take one or more billing cycles for them to be removed. The January statement/bill was excessive as well. Then I just received the February statement and I flipped out again with charges over $530. These are just the supply charges which are running almost triple to those of just electric delivery.
To sum it all up, for 12/2014, 01/2015 and 02/2015 (3 months) my electric delivery with NYSEG was $253.18 and my electric supply with AMBIT was $1291.49!!! This is a crime and price gouging at its highest form. I will be filing an extensive complaint with NYS Public Service Commission because this company cannot and should not be allowed to get away with this by preying on innocent consumers. I can only hope someone has the knowledge and wherewithal to file a class action suit. I know I will be one of the first to line up! Please, somebody help us, the simple consumers who need energy supplied without being taken advantage of and preyed upon.

This company will take advantage of you whenever they can. It is based on a bit of a Ponzi scheme as they give rebates to people who recommend other people and have a nesting system. In any event, when the contract ended and without warning they jacked the rate up to over 70% higher than PSEG charges. They did that without basis. I called customer service. They have no one who can help and only people who can repeat a script. When I asked for the basis for the arbitrary increase, they could send me nothing, there was no one who could talk to me to explain, and there was no web site that could confirm a rational basis. Clearly over 70% higher than they usually charge and that much more than the "monopoly" PSEG charges has no basis in the claim to be "going to market rate". This company will take advantage of and abuse customers whenever they can.

Nope, so I called and verified everything and they told me it would be expedite and within 24 hr. Good, I thought since I have a 4-month old, 3.7 and 9-year old home with me it'd be faster. Wrong again! So I was left without electric for 3 whole days. I called many times but was not informed they do not work weekends. I understand it's a retail. But when I called oncor the following Monday my order form was never processed through Until that morning. And they informed me if Ambit sent your form on Friday I would have had power soon after disconnection! I'm very upset knowing $400 worth of groceries spoiled due to this. I realized in Feb. 2015 that our electric bill had been going up by $100 and double what we normally pay in the winter months, and we will have to pay $509 for the next bill due March 20, 2015. I called Ambit Energy thinking there was an error in billing and they said they had sent a letter last spring stating we needed to notify them if we wanted to continue the guaranteed savings plan. This is a scam because we joined Ambit to save money and get the best deal. I told them I never got the letter and didn't know I had renew annually. I agree they should have sent a certified letter because we have never had to re-sign up with our local supplier. We have been paying double the rate of 16 cents per kwh. It took me a while to realize this because we have had an unusually cold winter this year but we do have a new heat pump that's only 1 1/2 years old. We were getting ready to call the furnace company. Initially, I told Ambit we would sign up for another year and they said if we cancel any time before the one year is up, we would have to pay the difference in savings. They were vague about when the new rate would take effect. Ambit Energy has been cancelled.

I became an Ambit customer 3 years ago to help out a family member. I was told that I would have to renew the guaranteed savings plan after a year (it was also in the terms of service, I just checked). I received a letter from the company reminding me to renew. I made 1 simple phone call to renew the savings plan. My cousin asked that I take a look at this website and write my review. I am very happy with Ambit energy and saved more than the guarantee! The complaints I read seem to be from people who, received the letter and ignored it and were then placed on a higher variable plan. Who's responsible for that? And for those who say they didn't get a letter...? I've gotten one every year for 3 years. If you're considering this company as your supplier I say 'go for it' and be responsible enough to renew after 12 months!

I've been with Ambit for 2 years and have found the service to be excellent!!! I have the NJ Guaranteed Savings Plan. With this plan I'm guaranteed to be less than PSE&G over a 12 month span. Last fall PSE&G announced they were going to give their customers a 28 cent rate cut from November thru January. A day after the announcement, I was informed that Ambit would also drop their rate 28 cents. As promised my bills reflected a rate of .17 cents per therm... very cool!!!!
Recently, PSE&G announced they were extending their low rate for February and March. Ambit again matched the savings. In addition to great gas rates, I also took advantage of Ambit's Free Energy Program. By referring 15 customers my electric bill went from $207 last month to $86.78. I did the referral work once and I continue to receive a free supply of electric every month. Another customer benefit... we receive rewards points for every KW and Therm used. In another month we will accumulate enough points for Ambit to cover our accommodations for 5 days/4 nights in the Bahamas. Can't wait to thaw out after a really cold winter. Ambit is an awesome company that delivers on what they promise.

Well needless to say I realized I was getting ripped off when I had an electric bill two months in a row over 500 dollars. Who can justify that high of a cost for electric. My recommendation is to steer clear of this company because you will overpay for your home energy by thousands of dollars.

Our experience with Ambit was totally different. We had them for gas and they saved us a ton of money. I signed up for guaranteed savings plan. They changed my plan without written notice. Now they charge me triple the amount I used to pay. Current gas rate for 1 therm is 35 cents and Ambit is charging me $1.06. Ambit energy states that a renewal letter was mailed to my address, but I didnt receive anything. Obviously they are counting on consumers not taking action with the letter sent (or not sent)! I have never heard of a contract renewing automatically with different terms and not the terms originally accepted! I checked all my bills for the past year and I calculated that they overcharged me by $500. That would be probably one word against the other, if not the fact that I am not the only unsatisfied customer of Ambit Company. Online forums are full of people who feel they were tricked.
I cancelled the service, but the problem is they claim it can take 1-2 billing cycles to get switched while they keep stealing more money from me. They have been unwilling to correct the situation. The customer service is one of the worst I have ever dealt with. I was trying to get hold of them for two days, left my number for the automatic callback system, and when I finally reached a human being he was literally making fun of me. I could not understand why my National Grid bill was so high...$800.00 for one month. I called and they told me that my carrier was Ambit. I had signed up in 2011. I had forgotten this since the bill shows no changes. They informed me that Ambit was charging me 14.1 per kilowatt while National Grid would have only charged me 6.7 per kilowatt, amounting in $307.00 more on my bill. I called Ambit about this and they told me that because I did not fill out a paper renewing me on the savings plan, that they automatically put me on to the variable rate plan. Now what person in their right mind would want to pay more when signing up for a plan that is supposed to save you money? I asked them if they could take off the charge and they said no. They could not renew me or cancel me without the renewal paper...does that make no sense to anyone but me??
I am a single mother and a teacher. I cannot afford this bill. I had to go onto the budget plan and have it spread out over 10 months adding $81.00 to my monthly bill and I will now probably get another high bill for next month. There were no follow up phone calls to see why I did not respond, just put me in the position so they could charge me whatever they wanted.
I called the NYS PSC to see if there was anything that could be done so they can't do this to people in the future. Was on Ambit's term plan. Apparently they eliminated it in March 2014. Instead of automatically placing me into their new replacement plan (the PA Guaranteed Savings Plan) as one would expect, they placed me into an "alternate" plan with rates that were 80% higher than the normal utility (PECO). They say they did this because they sent me paperwork where I had to ELECT to be in the cheaper replacement plan that I didn't return. #1, I never received any such paperwork. #2, why would I have to elect to be placed into the replacement plan when THEY are the ones who terminated their prior plan? #3, how is it possibly reasonable or legal that their "default" plan for not electing the replacement plan would be a plan with 80% higher rates?
#4, why would I be placed in ANY plan of theirs if they didn't receive my election - if they require an affirmative election and don't have one, then the LAW should require them to revert me back to the incumbent provider (PECO)!! WE ALL KNOW THE ANSWER: It is very clear they engineered this for the sole purpose of ripping people off thousands of dollars until they happened to notice. In my case, they've stolen $1,200 from me vs. what I would have been charged by PECO. This is why there are 2 class action lawsuits against them (NJ & NY). I am in the process of finding out if I can join those or if PA residents who have been ripped off must start one in PA. If anyone knows, please let me know.

I have used Ambit for over 2 years and I have a consistent budget plan bill for 3 years. I never noticed any significant change once I used Ambit. Since everything was so consistent I set up auto bill pay - which makes me nervous and I quit paying attention to the amount going out. I got a "nasty note" from National Grid about my budget amount going up, over $100.
After looking into a few bills this is what I've come up with so far: My November 2014 bill was $637, same time last year was $376. My December 2014 bill is $823 vs. the same time last year at $470. That's over $600 and I've only looked at 2 months. I called National Grid (forgetting that Ambit was my supplier) and they told me the rates for today, Feb. 12, 2015. Electric at Ambit was nearly 3xs more (.17 vs .065/ kwh), gas was over double (.93 vs .41/ therms). Called Ambit and after nearly 30 minutes on hold was told "Sorry but we sent you a letter several months ago that your contract had expired and you didn't call to renew so you are now paying market rates."
Am I really suppose to believe that they are charging market rates - 2.5 times more than "National Greed"? Ambit said there was nothing they could do and that I cannot switch back to National Grid for another month. So I have to allow them to extort me for another month? And I haven't received January's bill yet - which is always the highest. I predict it will be over $900.

I had Ambit Northeast LLC as electricity supplier for a few years. Currently, they stopped offering fixed 12-month plans, so I switched to a different supplier. Apparently, after receiving the cancellation notification, Ambit spiked my rate to over twice as much per kWh for the last month I was with them. In other words, my price for electricity more than doubled overnight. They claim I was not enrolled into any plan with them anymore so my account was on month-to-month variable rate, which apparently they were free to set at any number (market value they call it). The rate is not a published rate anywhere. I find it very nasty, and for that reason alone I would not ever use them as supplier again. They evidently have no customer appreciation.

I have been doing bill comparisons for the last year. I live in a townhouse. My bill vs. my neighbors, apples to apples. Ambit vs. Nyseg: approximate yearly savings of about 14% with Ambit. With Ambit you don't pay the highlighted charges on the Nyseg bill and Ambit has had a cheaper rate every month. They guarantee 2% annual savings, but it's clearly much more. I will post the most recent bill comparison and the monthly rate comparison. As long as you renew your guaranteed savings plan every year, you should be very happy with Ambit!! Unfortunately, some consultants don't take the time to educate their customers on the renewal. They're usually the ones who quit after a month. If anyone wants the rest of the year bill comparisons, I would be happy to email them to you!!

I have been an Ambit customer since January of 2013. Here in California, there is only an option for natural gas. At first, I was saving 14 percent on my natural gas bill. Recently, I am still saving over 2 percent. Ambit says they'll never charge their customers additional fees, and I believe that because I have been a customer for over two years without being charged a penny over what I should already be charged from my local service provider. I don't know what the cases are over in the east coast, but I decided to see what the common denominator of this webpage is that represents such horrible service from Ambit. I noticed how many advertisements link to websites of energy providers, who obviously endorse this page. I'm not a rocket scientist, but do with that what you will.

I called Ambit and was told the same story as I have read above - that they sent a letter to renew the plan. They CLAIM they mailed me a notice but I never saw it. They directed me to my Ambit account online (which I never go to because I always use my distributor's account) where there was a message notifying me of the expiration. After the expiration date they started charging me over $1.00 a therm which is more than 2X the current market rate.
I didn't notice it until I saw my January bill which was $428, DOUBLE what my January bill was last year. I told them I wanted to go back to the Guaranteed Savings Plan immediately, but I will have to wait for at least another billing cycle or two. SO I will be getting raped by them for at least another month, maybe two. As soon as I am done attempting to get a refund I will cancel for sure. I will never trust another outside supplier again. Whether someone tries to con you into convincing your friends and relatives to switch to Ambit OR tries to con you into savings on gas and electric... you will be sorry if you switch. This is FACT. ESCO's are non-regulated. Meaning they give you this great rate for x amount of months, then without notice, switch you to a DISGUSTINGLY HIGH non regulated rate where you will lose all the money you have saved and more. Don't do it. Stick with NYSEG, CON-ED, etc. They will always give you the lowest rate possible. THEY ARE REGULATED so you do not have to monitor them every month to see if you were suddenly switched to a non regulated scam per KWH rate like AMBIT.

I diligently respond but family members ditch the mail as "junk mail" and were reverted to "variable".
Did their bill increase? Yes.. Was it Ambit's fault? NO... Did we NOT just have one of the coldest winters last year? Are all of the "providers" of utilities trying to recoup from "OUR" usage? YES! In my area National Grid "froze their rates" but ADDED on an extra FEE to RECOUP... So were their fees really lowered? NO! At first I was skeptical. I Googled "Ambit" and there was a lot of conflicting information. I did find out that they had an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (the highest rating), they have been in business for 8 years now, JD Power and Associates ranked them #1 in customer satisfaction for New York in 2013, and that they were a direct selling/direct sales company (similar to Tupperware, Advocare, Avon, Arbonne, Thirty-One, Isagenix, etc.- which is why some refer to it as a "Pyramid Scheme" when in reality, is multi-level marketing), and the Direct Selling News ranked them #12 worldwide (Amway, Avon, Herbalife, Vorwerk, Mary Kay, Natura, Nu Skin, Tupperware, Belcorp, Oriflame, and Primerica were ahead of them form the 2013 list).
It was free to switch over at the recommendation of a family member. The first year I saved only $8.63, not much, but every little bit helps. The only "catch" if you will, is that you have to sign-up for the savings plan again each year (part of the rules of New York State imposed to prevent companies from forming contracts that lock you in). I did as requested (I received a letter and several emails telling me that my year was up and all I had to do was log on to my account or call Ambit Energy to renew my savings plan).
The following year, the savings went from 1.47% to 2% and I saved $11.67! I have had no issues with any power outages and NYSEG is still my provider and I do not get an extra electric bill. The only difference is the name on my supplier portion of my NYSEG bill, went from NYSEG to Ambit (on Page 5). Same old bill from NYSEG, only a little bit cheaper! Thank you!!! I was happy with the service for 2+ years now and so I referred several friends and family members to switch (all for free) and now I receive an energy credit each month on my NYSEG bill that ranges from about $35.00 - $55.00! I'm now saving about $1,200.00 per year between the energy credits on my National Fuel natural gas bill and NYSEG electric bill. ALL FOR FREE!

I switched my home and business (I own a swimming pool company) over to Ambit. I also paid the over $400 fee to become a consultant.
After paying this is when the real information about what being a consultant meant. It was nothing more than a pyramid scheme where you make more money the more people you can convince to become consultants. I attended a couple training seminars where they blatantly admitted that being vague and misleading to potential new consultants was their approach. I immediately recognized it for what it was and dropped out. Now over a year later my electric bill for my home and business were over $700 each. Ambit promises to save you money, but you will never see the savings unless you harass them after a year of service, and demand you see a cost analysis of what you saved as opposed to what your local gas supplier charges. After many hours on the phone and waiting 6 months for my analysis, they refunded me $7 for my 1st year savings plus the $30 overcharge, as my utility company was cheaper. If I hadn't harassed them, I would never have seen a penny back.
Here's the best part of their scam. If you don't call them each year to renew your contract, they automatically put you in a variable rate program which increases their charges 400% higher than your local company, that's right 400%. By the time I figured it out, instead of saving money, they ripped me off for $500. The best part is when you call the company to discuss anything, they keep apologizing but do nothing about it. You can't call the billing dept, direct or get any supervisor on the phone unless they call you back. Even better is nobody in the company has an extension, and if you ask them to identify who you are speaking with, they will only give first names, including the supervisors. A true professional scamming ripoff company. I live in NY, they are based in Texas. Would love to be a part of a class action suit against these thieves. Stay away from them unless you want to be rip offed too.

The first review I just read written by Scott from Baltimore, MD is my exact story. I signed up with a "friend" who said I would save money and receive a check at the end of the year for all my "savings." Turns out the check you receive is the difference between what you would be paying your regular electric company and what Ambit charged you. Yes, they are returning your money to you. I also later found out that my "friend" does not get an electric bill because she has signed up enough customers and additional rep. This is a pyramid company so anyone you sign up as a representative, you get a portion of whatever they take in. Also, I never received a renewal letter, then was switched into a different category at a high rate. Not until I called to discontinue their service did I find this out. I called Con Edison to complain about the rate and they told me I was paying Ambit a high rate than I would be paying Con Edison. The whole thing is a scam. Better Business Bureau has them on record with several complaints. I really don't know how they are getting away with it. Clever attorneys are on their payroll, no doubt.

Today I called up Con Edison and said I'm paying 16.50 cents per kWh, they informed me that their rate is 8.4 cents per kWh!! Such rip-offs to just charge double the amount! They need a lawsuit brought against them.

I had a friend approach me to sign up with Ambit to save money on my electric bill. Since he was a friend, I did. He made all of the assurances that I would see substantial savings on my monthly bills. I signed in June of 2013. I have an automatic payment plan whereby my bank debits my checking account every month. Since I was dealing with a "friend", I ASSUMED that everything would be fine. However, in October of this year, I received my second $400+ debit to cover my payment. When I inquired as to why it was so high, I was advised that because I failed to sign a "renewal" letter in May of this year, that my account was moved to the "default" rate.
I did a comparison of what Bandit, oops, I mean Ambit had been charging me, and found that I paid over $700 more than my prior provider (Baltimore Gas & Electric) would have charged me! I was furious! I am retired & getting by on a fixed income. Those thieves at Ambit claimed that they sent me a notice, but I never received anything from those liars! No letter, no email, no text or phone call! They just moved me into the highest rate out there! Are there any attorneys out there who can bring a class action suit against them?

In September 2014 I realized that my electric bill was far more than what I thought I should be paying (based on actual usage). I call Ambit to discuss this issue. They told me that I was on the budget plan and that I was being charge according to budget and not usage. I immediately asked to be charged based on usage. Also, I discovered that I had over $500 in billing credit. It is now December and Ambit has not made the changes requested. I have called them numerous times regarding this matter and I'm told that the change is in process and that it would take at least 3 billing cycles. To this date it has not been changed.

We signed up for Ambit Energy through a friend over 2 years ago. My friend became a consultant for Ambit and sold me on the 'guaranteed savings' that I would see on my utility bills. After year 2, I was baffled at how high our utility bills were and the winter season wasn't even upon us. We compared our utility bills to others and it clearly showed we were paying 3x more per kwh for our electricity than anyone else. We called Ambit immediately and their response was, "We sent you a renewal packet at the beginning of the year for you to sign up again for the 'Guaranteed Savings Plan' and you never responded." WHAT?! So our plan was promotional? We had to renew? Where was that ever stated? Who wouldn't want a guaranteed savings plan? That was why we signed up for Ambit - for guaranteed savings. I don't remember there being an expiration date. So we immediately cancelled Ambit and went back to our local supplier. There are no renewals or promotional periods to deal with and our rates will most likely be cheaper than Ambit's anyways. We paid thousands more than we should have on our utility bills in 2014. Ambit is a scam!!

My bill just came again and electricity is 20% more than National Grid and the gas is 3 TIMES (!!!) the National Grid rate. Stay away, it is a pyramid scheme and a rip off. My electric bills have skyrocketed this year. When I contacted Ambit, I was told they had sent a renew notice for their guarantee savings plan. They said it was sent last year. I don't recall seeing the notice. I would estimate I overpaid, thanks to Ambit, many hundreds if not thousands of dollars this year over the going rate because they, as far as I can tell, didn't properly notify me of the changes they were making to my account, in direct violation of New York consumer laws. You would think they have some ethics, but apparently not. I expect they will soon be bankrupt and suing them won't be an option. Horrible customer service. Horrible.

I live alone and work full time and am gone most of the time. After finally switching to a lower rate with a different company I receive a huge bill with the disconnect fee and the remainder of the average billing balance. All well and good. At this point I was livid that I had to continue with this POS of a company.
Solution: Call your electric or gas company. Tell them that you would like to cancel that account immediately and to open a new account with a different account number using only their service. This shuts down the Ambit energy account the following day!

I have been an Ambit customer for over five years. Never really noticed an issue until May of this year when all my rates doubled for every month. Of particular interest was a $400.00 bill for Electricity in Aug. Funny thing is we were out of town the entire month with no AC or anything turned on. I started checking and comparing the last five years. I realized that the last six months my bill has doubled. I had enough today and finally got through to someone to disconnect. They inquired as to whether I wanted to get on the "guaranteed rate" - didn't know anything about that and apparently have been paying a market rate. Lived in the same house. Never got a piece of mail from them except one refund check a few years back for a couple dollars.
I contacted NYSEG and learned they have been overcharging me. Looking back it makes sense. I canceled and was told it would take one to two bill cycles. Every month, my Ambit rate was lower than the incumbent's rate (PPL). When it was time to renew, I received 4-5 letters over a few months prior to my renewal date to remind me to renew. Each letter specified that if I did not contact them, the account would be "defaulted" to the variable rate. It also stated in the letter that it may take 1-2 billing cycles for the renewal to take effect. When I did renew, I signed up for the guaranteed savings plan. I can say with 100% certainty that since being on this plan, my Ambit rate had NEVER been higher than the incumbent's.
The people on here that are complaining about their rates soaring were obviously not paying attention to their mail and/or had a consultant that just didn't care. And for that, I feel sorry for them all. As far as the free energy Ambit offers, my mom- who has been a customer as long as I have been - has been receiving the credit for over a year and it totally negates her generation and transition charges (the ones from Ambit) so all she has to pay is the distribution charge to PPL.

I received a $384 bill, current month's bill, plus average billing overage, all due once, with no prior notification. I called the customer care center & held for over 30 minutes waiting on someone to answer. After finally getting to talk with a live person, I made payment arrangements to pay $100 on 10-22 which I did & it shows online as being paid on 10-22. Next agreement was to pay balance of $284.12 in two weeks, or 11-4.
On 10-29 I received a disconnect notice & phone calls threatening to disconnect my service. I've been a customer since August 2011 & have paid faithfully each month & do not appreciate being treated as a deadbeat. I should also add, I sent a letter to my sales person/Ambit account manager requesting assistance, no response received. In fact I have not heard from her in over 2 years at least.
When I set up average billing, it was not explained that the full amount of overage was expected to be paid in full at the end of 12 months. Why wasn't an additional $20 or $30 added to each bill to catch up, instead? There was no phone call or letter to advise me of upcoming payment, no prior notification that balance was to be paid in full. I've had other bad experiences with them, one oversight on payment since 2011 & they wanted payment within 24 hours or threatened to disconnect my service.
One time, they sent me a bill for $200 plus current month's billing, for early termination fee, because I had not called in to renew my service. It took over an hour to get it straightened out. Not only that, but they quote one rate/kwh on your service plan, but bill at a higher rate throughout the entire year. When I asked about this, I was given some garbled answer that didn’t make any sense. Bottom line, I was charged a lot more per/kwh than quoted. This is the last straw in dealing with Ambit energy. The only time you hear from them is when they want to beat you up about a bill. As soon as my contract expires, I'm disconnecting with Ambit & will go with another provider. Once again like everyone else we were scammed by them as well. It all started out with them charging us an insane amount more because we did not "renew" our contract. Yet we received nothing in the mail or by email even explaining it was time for renewal. I don't see how it is even legal for a company to do that. Second problem came when we were moving apartments because I am nine months pregnant and needed a bigger place. We called to transfer our service and they said we couldn't until we paid our current bill and another deposit because they CANCELLED our service without our consent. How in the world can you just cancel someone's contract with you after no letter, call, email, or any notification whatsoever?!
So of course we refuse to pay them another deposit when we did not cancel it ourselves in the first place, but the person on the phone convinces us he can get a better deal for us. So, we reluctantly agree. Then he goes to say he will put a work order in for that day to get it turned on our new apartment by the next day. Come moving day the next day and there is no electricity. Keep in mind we live in Texas where it's still very hot in October and my baby is due any day. So we call to see what the hold up is and they tell us the man put the work order in for five days later than the date he stated to us!! And on top of that there is apparently a 2-5 business day time frame that he never once explained to us. He promised it would be on that day.
They told us because he wrote it in his notes that it counts as him telling us. Uh excuse me?! No! Basically we keep getting transferred and everyone tells us there's nothing they can do, and that my pregnant self basically has to live a week in the Texas heat with no air conditioning. That does not fly with me and I refused to go into labor because of their incompetence. So after calling and calling and raising hell, and even getting hung up on, we FINALLY get someone out after threatening a lawsuit. However, a few months ago I felt that my monthly bills were getting higher for no particular reason, especially with oil prices going down. I put together a spreadsheet comparing my Ambit supply bills with what my local utility would have charged me for the same period (they publish their rates on their website so consumers can compare).
So far in 2014 I have paid almost $300 more with Ambit! Apparently, around the same time as the accident, Ambit sent a letter to our home to sign on to renew to continue to receive a 2% yearly savings. I never got a letter, so I never responded. I was completely devastated and overwhelmed and just trying to keep up. After receiving my National Grid bill, last month, I phoned them and asked why my bill was so high.
Their answer: "because you have ambit energy as your supplier and this month you paid double what you would have paid if you were with National Grid." Um, WHAT?! I then went to the National Grid website to get a cost comparison for the past year. As it turns out, I paid almost 800.00 MORE (799.07 to be exact) with Ambit than I would have if I did not have their service. One month in particular, I paid 130.00 more than I would have if I did not have Ambit. And, here I am, scratching my head because I am unaware as to what Ambit is, unaware that I was a customer so I called them and explained to them my situation. I told them that this household is minus an entire income and this is not something I can afford. They were not at all understanding, or sympathetic, they were unwilling to compromise with me and they tell me they are unable to compensate me, but they can sign me on for another year if I would like. Seriously?
So, I ask them, how much did you save this household total for the first year? Answer: 47 dollars. I am flabbergasted. I said, "no thank you, I do not want to give another cent to a company that I think is scamming me, and they tell me that it may take 2 billing cycles until termination can be made." Oh, and I'm told there is a termination fee. When I first signed up 9 months ago I had a great rate, which was indeed 3% less than my current provider. My rate at that time was .057673 a KWH. Five months later my rate jumped to .102896. Next month it jumped to .132499, this month it went to.132500. That is more than double in just 7 months.
Forget the rebate (even if I really do get one). I cannot afford my electric bill. It would have been $400.00 with my old provider, instead it's now $817.13. And I have no idea what my bill next month will be. If it keeps tracking like this -- it will be over $1000.00 with no end in sight. I also found out they are not regulated. So you really have no recourse, that is why they can do this. I asked them to match my current providers rate -- they said they couldn't do it. Well of course they can -- they just won't. Once I saw the increase I saw that Ambit was charging 3 times what my utility company would charge. I requested to have the service cancelled and was told it takes 3 months to cancel a service I never requested to be signed up for. Like most of Ambit's customers, I signed up expecting lower rates. Over the first year, I probably saved about 30 dollars a month. All of a sudden, my rate went from 8 cents KWH to 15 1/2 cents KWH. My bill went from 350 dollars to over 800 dollars/month. I was livid. I called Ambit, and they said my 12-month plan with them was up and I was now on their variable rate. I asked them why I wasn't warned about this disaster coming my way a few months earlier, and they said they sent three letters warning me. We open all our mail and never received a letter. I asked them how I could get off this rate, and learned I would have to continue for two months before adjustments could be made.
This is the heart of the scam: When I asked them how the 15.5 cent rate was calculated, the supervisor danced around the answer, saying that it is the market rate combined with other factors (This is a lie, because the market rate in our area is about 9.5 cents). I asked what the other factors are, and she wouldn't answer me, but after further probing it seems that the "other factors" are a recapture rate that calculates how much they saved you over the course of the last 12 months. In other words, whatever the savings you get over the contract period, is rolled back into higher rates. I could kick myself for not researching this company before I signed up. I will have to pay over 800 dollars for the next two billing period before I can go to a different power company. Stay away from Ambit.

Ambit is plain and simple a scam. My story is similar to many others! I signed with them to save money but it was just the opposite! I saw a tiny saving the first few months, TINY. The cost I paid the last few months with them was crazy. I checked the going rate for competitors and Ambit was double. My bill was more than double what I normally pay. (Like $685.00) Ambit had many excuses but couldn't give me a real reason why they were double compared to competitors? Maybe an estimate, maybe I used more energy. I work all day and shut everything off that wasn't really needed, still the bills went up. Here is your warning, if it sounds to good to be true it is too good to be true!! Unless you have money to throw away, stay away from Ambit!

Had a 12 month fixed rate contract and on the 5th month they changed the rate up by 40%. It took me 2 bills to catch the unexplained increase. I called and they said they made a mistake and would fix. The rate went back to the original rate the next month, however no credit was issued for the 2 months of overcharge. I called and they said they would take care of. Next month still no credit. I sent certified letter to their customer service department, got a call back to tell me that they couldn't tell me when or if I was ever going to see my credit. I wrote a 2nd letter and sent and still no credit. They have had my money now for 90 days and I still do not know if or when I will ever see my credit for this overcharge. I initially signed a contract awhile back with Ambit and had a very low rate... like another customer that complained on this site. I was used to a $330+ electric bill because of the size of my home. However all of a sudden within a month it doubled, almost quadrupled. There were no changes in our usage. It is only two of us and we rarely turn on upstairs unless we have guests or go there to entertain and play pool. That is not that often. In a nutshell, I went from a $330+ bill to a $600+ bill to a $780+ bill. I was livid and didn't understand what happened.
There were no issues in my home and no issues with my A/C... So I called them and also looked at my usage and my rate... and my rate increased to like 16.6 from like 9 or 10 per Kilowatt (or whatever that is). I asked them why this change and of course they said the contract was up for that time frame and they switched me from fixed to a variable rate. I asked why I was not contacted and they said I was. I was sent a letter (that I can tell you I never received because I open my bills from them and review it). I asked them to send me the letter and tell me when it was sent but they could not tell me anything (of course not because they were lying). I asked them if they really believed that I would have been ok with my bill increasing by that much without responding to keeping it at a fixed... They couldn't answer because they knew I was right.
I was so upset and asked that it be updated. I was able to take it back down but had to be with them for another 2 yrs after that (ridiculous)... but they are still making me pay for these extremely high bills that had from them. They even said we will have Oncor to come out and check to make sure it is correct though (I knew they were lying, it is my word against theirs and Oncor... I was in a no-win situation and I know it). The only thing I did get was a payment plan through August which does not help much because I have to pay a deferred amount monthly of the old bill as well as the full amount of my new bill...
SO it is still ridiculous. I have gotten it down from over $1100 to about $500... But believe this... as soon as my time is up with them... I am getting out of this pathetic company... AMBIT IS A SCAM for sure and I know now without question because I read these reviews here and they did the same thing to all of us pretty much! They need to be EXPOSED, SUED and SHUT DOWN!!!

I became a consultant before knowing all of the consequences I'm now paying $$$ for. In order to make this business work you have to have 15 households switch to Ambit to get your "free" power and even after that you have to pay your area electric company for their services such as meter readings, power outages and so on. My bill was estimated at 200.00 per month from my area electric company and Ambit was maybe three dollars less than what I paid before so, that brought my electric bill to a grand total of $600.00+ because I couldn't get all of the skeptical people I know to switch over to Ambit so I could get my "free" power. Now that I've switched back my last bill is over $1000.00 to start getting back to my budget billing which averages somewhere around $398.00 per month. Also the people you get to switch over will go through the same thing... Thanks Ambit.

Ambit's supply charges for electric went from $71.81 to $190.39 almost tripled, their gas supply charge went from $31.56 to $126.53 quadrupled. I live in a house that is primarily all electric and I have two teenage girls, so my electricity usage is very high. A friend came to me after signing up for Ambit and asked me to sit in on a "How to become a Consultant for Ambit" as she had already become a Consultant. I did not sign up for Ambit Energy that day or sign on to become a Consultant. I feel that if a company and a product is a reputable one, you don't have to give away hotel nights and vouchers to people to get them to sign on. The product and company should speak for itself!
Until last month, I was locked in with NYSEG Solutions for a two year fixed rate of .0589 per kwh. I advised my friend what a great rate I had, but for 2 months after this meeting, she would message me frequently and advise that if I signed up, in my first two months, I would see a 7% savings per month and 2% per month after. She also sent me text msgs of other people's bills with rates lower than my fixed rate with NYSEG Solutions. I finally gave in and made the switch.
Upon my first Ambit bill, my rate was .0971 per kwh. Almost double what I was paying with NYSEG Solutions. I called Ambit and asked them why in the world I was paying such a high rate and where was my 7% savings? I was advised that I was misinformed, that the savings would be seen upon a year of usage. I advised that wasn't what I was advised and I was told by Ambit, "Our agents are Independent Sales Agents, sorry." So basically what they were saying is, we do not employ the people out selling our product and if they don't know what they are talking about when they rope you in, not our problem.
Do Not EVER turn your service over to Ambit. I am going to complain and complain on this until something is done to this horrible company. I hope if you have been bitten by Ambit, you will do the same!

Just like everyone else I was scammed by Ambit. I was promised a cheaper rate with a "guarantee" to be at least 2% cheaper than National Grid. No one told me that I need to tell Ambit ''every year" that I want to renew and stay with this guarantee. Perhaps, they thought, one year I would choose to pay more money for gas. I need to tell them every year I want to pay less. Of course, I never actually knew that I needed to call and tell them this. Neither did I ever get any renewal letter and/or cancellation notice as they claim they sent me. Sure enough, my account was silently switched to a variable rate plan with no guarantee and much higher pricing. I only found out about this when I called this year to complain about the extremely high billing.
Apparently, somewhere in the fine print they actually did "tell" me that I need to keep renewing the guarantee plan every year. Isn't there a law against putting such essential terms in the fine print? It puzzles me how this can possible be legal, notwithstanding the fine print! Why in the world would I want to go with a more expensive plan vs a guarantee plan? ? What do they need me to call them for? Is there a monthly fee for the plan? Is there some restriction that I need to agree to? Both plans are identical in all other respects except for the guarantee!!! Clearly, this fine print clause is set up for scamming purposes. Obviously, Ambit is relying on the many victims who don't know to call and get silently pushed off the guarantee.
If there is no legitimate business purpose for me to "call" then there is no other way around calling this practice a scam. I complained to the Public Service Commission (still under review). Ambit replied with their boilerplate type response that they notified me to renew and I didn't. Then Ambit said they called me to discuss my higher pricing and I signed up for the guarantee plan. First, I never received any renewal and/or cancellation letter. Second, I called Ambit to complain. They never called me. Third, I "signed up" for the plan as part of my request to backdate the guarantee, which they refused. Where is the consumer protection?? How can such a large company get away with this obviously improper practice?

A lot of customers are complaining of being hit with delivery charges. It seems that customers do not understand how energy deregulation works. Ambit is one of CTAs that can supply energy (gas only in CA) and the local utility company (which is PG&E in Northern CA) is delivering the energy to the customers so customers HAVE to pay delivery charges to the local utility company, NOT TO AMBIT. YOU ARE NOT PAYING DOUBLE. For PG&E customers in CA, PG&E bills has both delivery and gas charges. When the customers chose Ambit as the gas supplier, PG&E will give customers procurement credit. Compare the procurement credits with Ambit's charge, customers can see if they are saving with Ambit or paying more. So customers only pay Ambit for the gas portion.
I have seen savings in my PGE bills for most of the months, not every month, but Ambit's saving in CA is guaranteed for 12 months. So far for CA customers that haven't been with Ambit for over 12 months, none of them over paid in the 12 months period. As in areas that guaranteed savings (2% or 3% in electricity and/or gas in writing) are provided in NY, NJ, IL, MD, DC, it does not matter what the price is, at the end of the 12 months, you either save or Ambit will send you a check: "Our 3% Savings Guarantee plans guarantee an annual savings of 3% compared to what the incumbent utility would have charged for the same period. Either you'll save with Ambit, or we'll mail you a check." Of course, the best is still to refer 15 customers and get FREE energy like many of us do. No price can be better than FREE.

First let me say that I am not a consultant with Ambit, I'm just a customer. I signed up with Ambit in 2012 and have been with them since that time. My decision to choose Ambit was based on a web search for the best overall electric rates. Ambit was the best, based on total bill, not just price per kwh. After my first year contract was over I, again, did a web search for the best rates. Ambit was still the best overall so I signed up for another year.
My father in law is with TXU. We recently compared our energy bills. He had used just under 900 kwh for the month and I had used just over 1400 kwh. My bill was $12 higher than his for almost 500 more kwh. Most of the difference in rate was the amount TXU was claiming as Centerpoint Charges. (For those not from the Houston area, Centerpoint is the owner of the electric infrastructure.) My Centerpoint charge was less than 10% of what my energy charges were. His was close to 40%.
Just for complete disclosure, my April 2014 bill with Ambit was for 1,419 kWh and totaled $159.90 including all taxes and charges.
I use their automatic payment system so I never have to worry about late charges, disconnect fees or many of the other problems that some other reviewers are saying are issues with Ambit. From what I am reading, most of the problems people are complaining about are self inflicted. They either didn't do their homework before choosing Ambit or they aren't paying their bills on time. NEVER make a change without doing your due diligence. Realize what you are getting into, what the rules are, and what it takes to get out if you aren't satisfied. If people would only do that, many of these complaints would never happen.

I can't even heat my home!!! I think we should all get together and fight this. They should not be able to get away with this!!!

Last year we bought our first home, which require complete remodel and a lot of work, so every dollar counts in our budget. Our real estate agent wanted us to 'save on energy' so she sign us up with Ambit. It's been a year, and we finally notice that we are not saving anything; in fact we are losing money every month!!! From June to February, we were paying 10-15% more than every other resident of Northfield, IL... Then in March, Ambit's rate jumped to 40% more. Unfortunately after I cancelled their service, they still get 45 days for their final meter reading, which means I'm going to lose another at least $100. Just to compare current ComEd rate $0.0525, MC Square Energy $0.04977(which I would be using without switching to Ambit), and Ambit rate $0.909- exactly 40% more, that equals $82.32 more just for the last month than it should be:( ... Please check your bills, and make sure that your rate is actually lower than it would be if you were with ComEd or with the provider that your village has a contract with!!!!!

I was recruited to Ambit by my nephew who I wanted to help out with his new venture. I am in my 2nd year with them and up to now it's been quiet and harmless. They say I saved $48 last year but it took 4 months to get paperwork to show that and then its only $ 4 a month of my avg bill of $800 a month... Big deal. So this past month of Feb, I was billed at .39 cents kWh (total bill of $1998) the current rate for coned is about .14-16 cents so that almost triple. When I called, they said that they had to pay the higher rate and that coned couldn't do that by law until May and my contract with them states that I will be adjusted only at my year end. Meanwhile, I am paying a $1000 extra month.
When I tried to cancel it would take 15-45 days and I would lose the adjustment that only applies to current customers at my year end. So I need to wait another 6 months to hope they adjust all my bills and get my guaranteed 1% savings. If they have to adjust for $1000 a month for me alone, who says they will even be able to pay me back my possible $4000?? Meanwhile I can't cancel. I have to make sure I cancel on my annual date in October than wait a few months until they process my account.. RIDICULOUS!! So they can charge what they want now, hold my money for probably 9 months? For the possible savings of $50 a year??? Awful.

Waited on hold for 1 hr 35 mins to get thru to Ambit. My husband had got sucked into a contract thru a friend & we'd received a letter that our plan was finally expiring. My call was to tell them we would be returning to our previous energy supplier, but they insisted I couldn't, since it's in his name. I explained to them that his work prevents him from being able to call especially when the hold time is over an hour! Asked for a supervisor...10 more minutes on hold! When she came on she told me the same thing, that even though I had the letter in front of me and all of the billing info, account#, I could do nothing. Once again, I explained my husband's work situation. Finally, she said I could have him mail a letter or a fax. I told her that we would be sending a fax on Monday. Then I ask for the date that the contract would be cancelled, since it expires 4/14/14..."oh," she said, "that could take up to 2 billing cycles." Which, of course, will be at a much higher variable rate!
I have wasted an entire afternoon with no resolution. All I wanted to do was cancel. This is a multi-level marketing venture that I would advise anyone to stay away from. 1. Ambit document states the service term is 1 year ending January 31, 2015. However, their billing started with my Dec. 16, 2013 billing. Given that fact, the year should end Nov. 15, 2014!!! Do the math for yourself!
2. None of the following is based on meter readings: the billing for Dec. 2013 by Ambit was $25.44; my billing at Jan. 16, 2014 by Ambit was $36.83; my billing at Feb. 16, 2014 by Ambit was $46.74; my last billing at Mar. 16, 2014 by Ambit was $61.85.
3. During this time my NYSEG billing remained at $44.00 per month for each of the months in question re: Ambit. Further, given that my property has an entry gate which remained closed, there were no meter reading.

Don't choose Ambit Energy or your electric bill may soar like a rocket! One of their representatives signed us up for their service after she asked us if we wanted to save $50/mo. on electric. Since July 2012 the bills were just okay. Sometimes BGE was cheaper and sometimes Ambit Energy was cheaper, the difference was negligible at a rate around $0.0953/kWh. Then suddenly in January 2014 Ambit Energy started to increase our rates as was reflected in the shocking bills which they sent to us in Jan: $0.1000/kWh, Feb: $0.1185/kWh, and Mar: $0.18575/kWh.
All the while BGE's fair market rate remained the same at around $0.09662/kWh. We called Ambit Energy and they said we were on a variable plan. That's not what the rep told us and that's not the basis of our agreement. We agreed to save $50/mo. on electric. Instead we have a bill today which is more than double what we would have paid to BGE. To make things worse we have to stay connected to Ambit Energy's skyrocket rates until they disconnect us next month and they won't do anything about it. We filed a county complaint, maybe justice will be served.

I went to the end of the year when it came time to renew and again, the rate was higher. That point, I chose to switch. However, it takes 2 MONTHS to switch providers. During that time until I COULD switch, Ambit increased the rate from 8 cents a kwh to 13 cents a kwh, and I could do NOTHING about it. So I decided to give it a try, "I didn't sign any contracts" only received a call to verify my information. My first bill on my gas comes in and it was a little higher than normal so I called the gas company. This is when I found out that the rate charged was higher than the gas company so I called the Ambit Service right away. Then a few weeks later I got a bill for gas for 1,033.28 then were charging more than 3x the amount than the gas company. I called the gas company again they told me that it was all Ambit that I only owe South Jersey gas 287.49. Ambit was charging me 2.75 per Therm used. This company is by far a scam! The worst company ever and I hope they get what they deserve. I'm scared I will lose my service because I don't have the money to pay. Jan 2014, it went above the utility rate to 0.1/kwh. In Feb 2014, it skyrocketed to 0.185/kwh. Figuring it was a mistake, we called and they said tough, that is the variable rate.
I compared others in our area and here are the rates on March 15, 2014: BG&E 0.0962, Constellation 0.0895, Spark 0.089, North American 0.0929, ConEdison 0.0898, Direct Energy 0.0969, oasis 0.101, Commerce 0.1059. I have overpaid them in excess of $700.00 for gas this heating season!! On the electric Ambit charged me $18.9 per KWH whereby PSEG would have charged $11.4 KWH which in my case has cost me over $100 more than PSEG for the past 3 months.
Be prepared for a 30min + hold time if you call their customer service. It appears they are understaffed as this has been happening throughout the relationship with them. After finally speaking with them, I'm told that due to my variable rate plan and the cooler than normal winter is why there is such a difference. While I can understand there will be somewhat a difference, certainly not a 65% difference. Anyone who tells that Ambit guarantees to beat your incumbent provider is uninformed. I used to be a consultant with them and I used to tell people the same thing as that's how I knew it to be. I would encourage anyone using them to check your bills carefully... It went through the steps and finally asked if I would like to pay with the credit card they had on file. I didn't know I had that, but happily said yes. They gave me the last 4 numbers of the card which I had to pull out of my purse b/c I didn't even know them. They say thank you and give me a confirmation code that it has been paid and they appreciate me using Ambit.
Several days later, I get a call by my manager that our service has been cut off. I was, and still am furious. Said if I wanted it turned back on I would have to pay $117 in charges - the $55 plus all the other fees for being late. Of course I paid it so we could have electricity.
I called today to run through that automated system just to see if they still said they had my CC number, and sure enough they asked if I'd like to use the number on file. I think it is a scam to NOT run your CC, but your electricity off, then make huge amounts off the late fees. I talked to them today and they are "looking into it."
