I reserved a car from Thrifty through Expedia to be picked up at the Tampa Airport. There were 3 people in front of me at the rental counter and it took almost an hour to get to the counter. They told me to go to a designated parking spot and there was no car there. I left the wife and luggage in the garage and returned up the stairs back to the counter. The agent, who was very nice, apologized and gave me a different car through Hertz. Problem is the Hertz car was in the opposite direction as where I left the wife and luggage.

Got the car, had to figure out how to drive over to the wife and over 2 hours, we finally started our vacation. Two weeks later, I received a letter from thriftyrentalfine.com addressing unpaid tolls while we had the car. We incurred 3 tolls at .54 cent each and they are charging an admin fee of $9.99 per toll. There was no discussion at the rental counter as to how they handle toll fees or their charge associated. Obviously this is a business plan or they wouldn't have sent the letter and set up a website at thriftyrentalfine.com. The employees at the rental counter and at the return drop off were very nice and pleasant and I don't blame them at all. They should be upfront about all potential charges and fees and not overcharge and surprise the rental customers.

I reserved a car through Priceline for Thrifty on Saint Barnabas Rd. Maryland. When I arrived at 10 am via Uber I was told that they didn't have any cars available so and that I could wait for them to pick one up from another location. I waited an hour and when I get to the counter to go forward with renting I am told I have to come back at 3 because I used a debit card to reserve the vehicle and they require a 24 hour wait. I come back at 3 via uber again and they tell me that they still don't have any cars. The front desk clerk tells me to call priceline letting them know so I can get a refund. I call priceline and they tell me that I have to email them and wait for a response in 10 days because they don't usually give refunds. This was just an overall horrible and stressful experience and I'm possibly out of my $160 because Thrifty didn't have any cars available for rental which is not my fault!

Had a confirmed reservation on 03/05/21. Thrifty didn't have any cars available, stranded me in Jacksonville, FL. Had to Uber to Brunswick, spent over $260 in ubers back and forth. Thrifty refuses to reimburse for the Ubers, they gave me a crap $100 voucher for a future rental. Like I am going to rent with this crap company again. Their customer support is awful. You can't call them, can't email them. I hope this company rots in heck.

If you rent a vehicle from Thrifty and pick up the vehicle on Sunday understand they are closed. Sign on the counter says to use the Dollar rental counter next door. Family Trip to Utah. We rented from Thrifty on Sunday 2/14. Picked up the vehicle at the airport. Tire pressure warning, losing air fast and the tire blew only 4 miles from the airport. Family in vehicle on the shoulder of the highway. We called roadside assistance. 45 minutes on hold and never spoke to anyone. Tried calling Thrifty and the 4 options available on the call to reach someone was a dead end. My wife and I both tried any number we could find. Took Uber back to the airport to rent another vehicle.

Went to the same Dollar rental counter and told the manager what happened and he had an attitude. I explained what happened and where the vehicle was (with pictures). I said I would like to get a new rental and was told they can't provide another vehicle until the other vehicle was recovered? The manager dialed roadside and was on hold (shocker). This is now 2 hours after we rented the first vehicle and a rough start to our vacation. Manager said nothing and we stood at the counter with our luggage and no vehicle. Manager had zero interest in helping. I told him that I am done with them and will never rent and started to walk away and realized I had the key to the vehicle. I turned around and said, "Here are your keys" and tossed underhand over the plexiglass and the manager made no attempt to catch and the key fab bounced off his right arm.

I tried calling 3 times while on vacation to speak to a manager and gave up. Returned home to find out the Thrifty contract was not closed out and charging additional days. Two hours on the phone yesterday to find out that the manager did nothing about the vehicle, the vehicle was impounded and towed away and I was told I had to pay for that too. To top it off the manager made a note in the system that I threw the keys and hit him in the face. I am glad another family that was waiting saw the entire thing and gave me his business card if I needed a witness to what just happened. Thrifty phone number for Executive Service 1-888-225-6610. I rented a vehicle from Thrifty Car Rental in Memphis TN in October. When I arrived to the rental place I was asked do I want damage waiver and I said no because it does not make any sense to pay double of the rental by doing this. By the way I have never taking these services because my insurance is covering the rentals. Well, they put those on my bill without my permission and, I made a mistake by signing the agreement without reading it through. Will not do that again!

By the way they added also other premium services there too! I try calling them, making dispute to my credit car company, which ended up giving my disputed amount back to me but Thrifty put a same amount to the collection so that was no good. Will be writing a complaint about this company also to BBB. Funny thing about this is that Thrifty sent me a letter saying that I have been "removed" from their account from using their services again.... YEAH, just can't wait to use them again....

I rented from the Phoenix airport location Jan. 31st to Feb 1st. I had a reservation and stood in line for 1.5 hours to obtain my vehicle. The rates were extremely cheap and I thought it was worth the line. Boy was I wrong!
#1 The customer service rep wasn't as friendly once I declined coverage.
#2 The car was filthy inside. We found a Starbucks bag and other trash under the seat
#3 When we returned the vehicle they were so overwhelmed no one could check us out. They were telling people to leave the keys in the car.
#4 I returned the tank at 3/4 and knew that I would be paying for gas but was shocked when I looked at my final emailed receipt to find that I was charged a full tank of gas! Additionally, they recorded my mileage at 1,102 miles driven. We drove less than 200 miles!

#5 When I called customer service to complain, I was told "we apologize for the inconvenience but unless you have proof of the mileage and gas we can not reimburse you".

My suggestion is that you hire honest workers that record and charge customers properly. There would be no need for a specific customer service line for "fuel charges". Absolutely ridiculous. If you rent from them take a picture of your mileage and tank. I WILL NEVER RENT FROM THRIFTY OR DOLLAR OR ANY COMPANY AFFILIATED WITH THEM AGAIN!

Terrible company. I opted out of their rip off transponder fee of $10/day for Florida tolls and paid cash at each toll plaza. Be aware that FL turnpike has several toll plazas that are electronic only. Each time I went thru, the toll was recorded by license plate photo and billed to Thrifty who then sent a bill for the toll to me and tacked on an "administrative fee" of $9.99 for each toll. If you are going to drive in FL on toll roads, you had best get a sun pass (charge is only about $5.00 for the transponder). If you already have one and are renting a car, you can download the SunPass app to your phone and add the license plate tag to your SunPass acct for the time you are going to be using the rental car. I will never use Thrifty ever again.

Went to NY via EWR to bury my sister. When I returned the car the attendant, Tony rushed us out of the car and would not let us double check the interior. Walked from the car to the terminal which was no more than 100 feet. Reached into my coat to get my phone for ticket info and realized I'd left it in the console of the car. Returned immediately, no more than 4 or 5 minutes and the car was gone. Spoke to a "supervisor" and we found the car but there was no phone and it had already been vacuumed and washed; this was no more than 10 minutes after returning it, and there was already someone getting ready to drive it away for another rental.

My son tracked the phone and it was clearly in the area where we were. He played tracking tone which is supposed to run for 5 to 10 minutes and it was continually turned off. The tracker then showed the phone clearly moving away from us. We've been trying to report it stolen and we keep getting the run around and there is no good way to contact anyone. We expect to be compensated for the OBVIOUSLY stolen phone and we are getting nowhere. I will never rent from them again.

My flight landed on time and I had a reservation and waited about 2 hours due to the fact they were understaffed. When I finally received my car it was not even cleaned. As we are in COVID, this was extremely concerning on my end. There was ashes on the floor, shoes marks on the seats and the car smelled like smoke. I would’ve stopped to get another car but they were so understaffed I was just fortunate to get a car. When I returned the car I was charged $400 and cleaning fees. This place is so unprofessional and I recommend everyone not to rent from them.

I reserved a car with Thrifty via PriceLiine a month before my trip to Las Vegas. I paid $379.42 and owe $100 and some change at the moment of pick up in Vegas. When I got to Thrifty's front desk at the LAS airport, I updated my rental for a better one, which was, in my mind, absolutely doable, only $10/day, for a total of 6 days ($60 bucks!). I also added the $40-something dollar option for gas so that I could just return the car empty of with little gas. This add up to another $250 AT MOST!.

I ended up paying $476.60 in addition to the already paid, a month back to PriceLine, $379.42. I was told that the $476.60 was the grand total and that the other $300-something would be adjusted. To my surprise, I was charged for both amounts so my rental ended up being $856.02 for a Chevrolet Malibu!!! $140+/day??? This is absurd. This is an absolute scam. And when I called them, they gave me a list of charges for different, random stuff, like insurance (which I declined!!), and state taxes (over $100??), among others. I strongly advice people to stay away from this company. Not worth the money, not worth your time.

I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental at Reagan Airport in Wash D.C. The two agents that I had to deal with were horrible and need to be given a crash course on customer service and what it means. I paid in advance for my wife to get a car in full, so all she would have to do was to pick up the car and go. She had to come up with all sorts of ID other than just the norm, which is a driver's license. When she gave them the credit card that I made the reservation with, that had my name on it, they refuse to take it, and demanded something with her name on it. All she had was a debit card, which the agent stated they would have to charge a $250 deposited on it. Why if the rental was paid for in advance? Which mind you was cheaper than the deposit they requested.

When my wife tried to explain, they wouldn't give her the time of day. Three times my wife had to wait on line to get back to the counter. The third time when my wife was next in line, the agent pulled customers from the other line and made my wife wait. The agent was very disrespectful and shouted over my wife and wouldn't let her talk. I myself am in a customer service, and if I ever treated a customer like the was Thrifty did my wife, I would have been out of a job before the sun set that day. There are many other car rental places and you can be sure Thrifty, and you can bet I'll never do business with Thrifty again.

I would never recommend this company. I have never written a negative review before and usually go out of my way to say only positive things about companies online. However, I do not want my experience to be anyone else's. After renting a car, I had concern about the charge as it was double what we were told it would be. We were told that it was just a hold on the card but would not be the full amount charged. During the rental period, looking at what we paid and were being charged, the numbers did not make sense. We attempted to reach out to Thrifty during our trip but were unsuccessful through phone calls as well as on social media.

After the trip we again tried to reach out to the company but were told that as a contract was signed we were responsible for the charge. We disputed the charge with our credit card company. Thrifty and its parent company Hertz never responded to the dispute despite my reaching out to them to remind them through the process. Normally if the company does not respond within the time limit the charge is forfeit. Before the allotted time, Thrifty sent the fee owed to collections. I feel harassed. However, to avoid any hits to my credit I did pay the fee. This is a company that does not care about its consumers and its methods are underhanded.

I got in the car and it smelled of smoke and trash so when I got to my destination I contacted Thrifty to let them know. Return the rental 5 days later everything went fine. Two days later when I got my receipt through an email they overcharged me $400 trying to say that I smoked in the vehicle and I don't even smoke cigarettes. When I told them the day I picked it up that it smelled of smoke and garbage so I called them to dispute the charge and told them. I called them to let them know about the smell in the vehicle. They said that I should have a number. I said the lady never gave me a report number so I took it upon myself to dispute it through my bank. We'll see how that goes.

I rent it from Thrifty about a month ago for about 4 weeks. With a rentals everything went great. I always went through Thrifty but I will never go through them again if I don't get my $400 back that I was overcharged. I think it would be only fair if someone walked through that car for damages before we left the parking lot. That's the way it should go. That way both the rental party and the company can do it together. That way to make sure there's no problems with the car. To get charged $400 for damages I didn't do I feel that that is wrong. Terrible experience. Booked through Expedia for daughter and boyfriend. Thrifty took advantage of them and charged card for $951.00 when booked for $296.12. Thrifty added full coverage insurance even though driver has full coverage and additional insurance purchased through Expedia. I was on speakerphone with Thrifty agent and daughter and boyfriend-told Thrifty to remove all insurance charges as they were unnecessary due to driver having full coverage and extra coverage purchased through Expedia. Agent said she removed. When I hung up agent then added on liability insurance-which was still unneeded as driver has full coverage and extra through Expedia.

Agent told daughter and boyfriend they could cancel insurance when returning car so not to worry about it. Agent did not document driver’s insurance. I called and was not able to speak to a manager until about 6 hours later because the agents kept hanging up on me. I explained to the manager, Joe, the situation. He said only way to remove would be for them to make an 8 hour round trip drive to break the contract. He also said no reason to contact his manager, Chan, because he and his agents made sure to document account “up and down” and that they can cancel the insurance on return, however no money back because it is a daily charge.

Joe also went back and forth over discussing “personal” details of contract since I wasn’t a signer but in the end gave me all details except the name of the agent that added the unnecessary/overcharged insurance. If you need to rent a car-be advised of opportunity they will take to overcharge and add unnecessary hidden fees without telling you-BEWARE when using Thrifty rental car, the Portland, PDX location is the one we used, as well as booking through Expedia as they have no control and no way of forcing Thrifty to abide by reservation booked through them. Shame on Thrifty for taking advantage of first time car renters.

Why, logically would anyone need to purchase insurance through Thrifty if they already had full coverage and paid extra for the Expedia coverage??? Not to mention all the other random charges that took it from $296.12 to $951.00. Steer clear of Thrifty car rental. Their direct phone # to desk at Portland airport location is 503-254-6565 option **-not that it will do any good. Worst customer service. Hope it was worth the extra $169.95 you charged-it won’t happen again-lesson learned. I won’t use you again and will make sure anyone and everyone knows of my experience. I’ll even chip in for a more expensive car rental company to make sure no one else gets taken advantage of.

In section "O" paragraph 2 Thrifty offers the "pass-plate all inclusive service" which is available in a "few cities". So what happens if you can't pay the toll before you travel the road and you aren't in the "few cities"? Thrifty will pay the tolls for you plus a hefty service fee. In my case I incurred $6.00 in tolls and $29.97 in administrative charges (admin fee is 5 times the amount of the tolls). I don't know how other rental companies handle this situation, but this seems excessive. I'm sure this will happen to more people as humans are taken out of toll booths for health or economic reasons.

St.Louis/Lambert location. The workers are rude. I sat for thirty minutes. And watch how they rent to friends and family members. One of the worker's smell like Alcohol and **. And he was a porter. Walk right in with a family member. He told his Co-worker, She didn't ask for nothing. I watched them slide money to one another. Then she told him don't worry with hands signal. I was floored. I had reservations not knowing I needed a deposit for two hundred. So the clerk had already swipe my credit card which was two hundred for the rental. I wasn't able to switch money around to my other card. So I cancel and went to budget. Got to budget rental. They tell me I have no funds available. I called Thrifty to see if they charged my credit card. And yes they did and I was livid. How am I getting charged for a car that I'm not driving.

I called that location. The same lady who I saw being So unprofessional answered and said, "Yes we charged you but we will release in 24hrs." In such a nasty way. And said, "Just call your bank." My weekend was destroyed. My family was here to see my sick mom!!! And I couldn't pick them up. From the train station. 24hrs had turn into a 5 days for my cash to be released. And that's because I called to speak to the manager. And explain the problem. She asked what time it was. I was there 8/21/20 4:30, I was On hold for 10 minutes. So that let me know something is very strange. With these people. She got back and said it will credit by 8/26/20. And must I say again I NEVER drove off with a rental but my card was charged. I think they need to test they workers for drugs. And hire more professional and diverse people. Period. Don't never go here please. Save yourself the trouble.

I did pay from my packet, causing delays and could be cause an accident when they stop me at the toll booth. I pay this with a Voucher for 2 days, that I already have for $200.00. at the same time they hold on my credit card $286.00. When I was ready to return the car, was a heavy traffic due to an accident at the highway that cause me delay, I proceed to call more than 5 times while I'm driving with no answer, when they finally pick up the phone a gentleman very nice, polite which I explained to him about the delay. He informed me that it is a period time about delay that I do not have to worry about. I did told him that I be there in 20 min. Which I did arrive on time.

At the time of returning the car I believe the same gentleman who I spoke over the phone he was taking care of me at the location. He Inform me that I was delay, at that will cost me another additional $180.00. They will take it from my credit card that they hold from the beginning $286.00. I explained the same thing about delay, that I did call so many times and they explained to me that, do not worry it is a period time to return the car that will cover. He gave me an offer to keep the car for 1 day, but still have to pay $180.00, which I do not accept. Plus when I explained regarding the malfunction of the GPS I present my receipt, he gave me 25 in coupons, I did pay$ 64 for the GPS, (in coupons 25?). This was my first time renting from Thrifty. I dont think this is fair charge me for another day and the car have no scratches or any type of incident. Plus I did call on time and the GPS never work. It is ridiculous and unfair.

Thrifty is the worst car rental company I have experienced and I advise everyone to not use them for their renting needs. My flight got in early so when I picked up the car early they charged me over double what the original base price was because "base price can change base on time". Sorry my flight got in early... Good to know Thrifty doesn't honor prices. The lady at the counter told me to take it up with customer service, which should essentially be nonexistent. They take forever to answer the phone and give you attitude on top of it. :) I paid over $500 for a two day rental thanks to thrifty. Finally got in touch after a month or two and they are doing nothing about the mishap here.

I called Thrifty and as usual it was customer service, out of the country I think Philippines. The first person that I talked to, she was no help, then she transferred me to The Bahamas where I talked to a “supervisor”. No proof just said they had to do extra cleaning. 1.5 hours later, I was on hold and discussions, no help no pictures or proof. Basically, you're screwed with no solutions. I guess I will dispute my credit card, hopefully that works. I have rented many cars from various companies with no issue until now. Terrible service at the counter as well. I am presenting a review about enrollment in their Blue Chip program. I tried on numerous occasions to enroll in their Blue Chip program, with no luck. I finally became frustrated with the whole enrollment procedure. I called the Blue Chip program and was informed that it was unable to sign me up for the program because I was using a debit card as my card of choice. I then was informed that the sign up program is behind the times, and was unable to accept my debit card. It is unfortunate that Thrifty is behind the times in accepting my debit card to enroll in their Blue Chips program.

To make this even more unpalatable is that they are always willing to accept my debit card for payment of my rentals. So the indications are that my debit card is good enough to pay for my rentals, but yet not good enough to allow me to be a member of their Blue Chips program. I have since moved on, along with all of my businesses, to another organization that is current with the ability to sign up with a reward programs. To make even more unpalatable is that Hertz, the parent company of Thrifty, is accepting my debit card and I am enrolled in their rewards program. Thrifty, get your act together. They will change rates and they do not tell you. I rented a Car for 24 days. Was quoted $398. Right before I was to return the car. I called to ask about changing the return location from ONT airport to LAX airport. They quoted me over the phone (cause you can't make changes online) a $10 rental destination change, so new total was $410. If the price was much more than original quote I would not have changed the rental drop off location. After I return the car I get a automated email for my final bill its $600. I called Thrifty, and they refused to even help. They said in our contract they have a right to change rates if returning to different location. That is fine, but how would I know the rate unless I called, and asked. Thus I did and they quoted me $410. At the time I asked the agent does this include all taxes and fees and they agent on the phone said yes. When talking to Customer Service they said they can't do anything after the car is returned.

They refused to listen to the recorded phone call when I called to request the change. I was quite taken aback that they were so non-customer focused. Customer service said they can see I called in to make a change, and apologized that the phone agent didn't quote me the correct amount, but there was nothing they could do. There is something that they can do, do the right thing!

They are completely unflexible during this national emergency. They would not adjust the transportation fees, or remove any of the days that I did not rent the car. I went from renting 41 days down to 20. The only thing they adjusted were the number of days for insurance. One of their offices said they were waiving transportation fees. They did not. They said they could adjust the contract type but that it would be more expensive since my daily rate would go up. This was a very expensive lesson for me. I recently rented with Thrifty. At the rental counter, I was told about a $10.99 a day toll tag charge ($43.96 total for 4 days). I declined as I knew the Tolls I would going through would be less than $10 total and would just pay them when the bill came. I was not however told that I should or could use my own toll tag otherwise I would be assessed outrageous fees. I was not told Thrifty would charge $15 for each toll booth I went through if I did not pay their set fee of $10.99.

Two weeks after the rental ended I received a bill for $125.99! The total toll charges were only $5.99. That means $120 in fees were assessed. So I did some research online and apparently this is a huge deceptive practice Thrifty does. I found many others with similar complaints. Thrifty was even sued but the state of Florida for scamming people by charging these excessive fee rates. You see, these so call "fees" for processing is 100% profit. I called my local toll Authority NTTA and they told me that they did not even charge any fees to Thrifty for the tolls. So in my case the $120 is pure profit they make to pay a $5.99 toll fee that was paid automatically and electronically by Thrifty. No human putting in hours for this transaction. Beware, they are ripping people off and it is illegal now at least in Florida. I hope all states sue them!

Trip October 2019. Up for 24 hours traveling solo from Nj to Kona Hi and arrived @Thrifty rental counter exhausted with a 2 hour drive ahead of me. The white male representative behind the counter looked up my reservation and said that how I rented the car online, “qualified” me to upgrade to a Jeep Wrangler for a “FEW” more dollars “per day“ and a Jeep will give me unlimited access to everything and I’ll avoid paying for expensive guided tours and will save money.

On vacation and owning a different Jeep, I agreed to upgrade and chose to return it empty of fuel. I originally reserved through Expedia and was paid in full prior to this. The bill was described to me as this is the upgrade charge, this is the fuel charge and this is the Refundable CC hold making my total and sign here then go outside and wait for it to arrive. It arrived 20 minutes later with no instruction or inspection. I went inside to ask to be shown how to operate the T-Top removal and the same rep @ the counter told me to look it up on YouTube! To not endure a damage charge, I had a lesser experience with keeping the roof intact for the whole trip.

Now home I received my CC bill for the total bill meaning I’m now charged double by including the rental fee I had paid in full already to Expedia. For formality I called Expedia and they can’t help. I call Thrifty and 4 times the CSR just repeated that “you signed the contract”. The csr did not want to get me a manager and I waited on hold for 20 minutes for a man claiming to be a manager and he simply repeated “you signed the contract” 3 times. Finally on my 4th attempt with asking now if I need to dispute this charge with my CC, the manager admitted fault by offering a $30.00 credit towards my $313.00 duplicate charge. I told him that is not appropriate and I will dispute this charge with my CC. I file the dispute and received a credit, they didn’t receive my paperwork and re-billed the amount, I saw this and called and now faxed the 8 pages and was credited once again.

Now I’m receiving bills from Thrifty for my disputed $313.00 charge and the CC said to disregard the bills for now. Now on Coronavirus lockdown I received a call from Viking Client Service, collecting on behalf of Hertz Corp the $313.00 disputed charge. I explained my situation and got his phone # and email to send him any updates. So I call my CC whom says I was credited the dispute charge and that they received NO RESPONSE from Thrifty and the dispute was considered in favor of myself and the CC and was closed. I sent an update email to Viking Client Service with all of this information and asked for the contact information for the president of Hertz Corp if what I have provided is not enough to recognize the error and reconsider the collection and with a thank you for bringing this to my attention. So far no response in 2 days from Viking. Today still dealing with this March 26, 2020.

My credit card company, Capital One, was able to get through to Thrifty via the number they have on file. The woman explained they were cash-less 'electronic tolls' that drivers cannot pay, and it's in the agreement that I will be charged for unpaid tolls. Pay the extra $50 or so and go with another company!!!!

I went to Seattle for the Christmas holiday. I rented through Thrifty as I have done many times before. This time, I stayed in Seattle and used one of the toll tunnels to travel to the ferry and back, there is a sign at the tunnel indicating that you will be billed via mail 3.00, awesome no problem. Get home, couple weeks later, receive a bill in the mail 120.00. Um WHAT? For going through the tunnel a total of 7 times? What happened is that Thrifty declined to inform me at the time of rental and I am sure did to many other clients that if you use a toll you will be charged an additional 15.00 fee each time you do so above the 3.00 toll cost IF you do not sign up for their "toll pass" which allows unlimited use of tolls each day. Thanks Thrifty for NOT disclosing that information to me and multiple other people. Awesome Job. You just lost a customer!

I rented a Dodge Challenger for 6 days from Thrifty Car Rental, I found the deal through hotwire. When I first arrived at Orlando MCO airport we had to walk back and forth from the front desk to the kiosk about 3 times due to the lack of help. After I decided to upgrade to the Challenger for the week the total came out to $196.42. This was from 12/18/19 to 12/24/19. I used my Chase Freedom card, so I declined the insurance protection from Thrifty. The first day I got the car I later noticed some Disney hotel brochures and a bottle of dip spit on the back floor but other than that the car was fairly clean. So far everything is going well and I really enjoyed driving this car.

Upon return, I dropped the car off and the thrifty employee sat in the driver seat then entered information into his tablet. After that he said, “You're good to go.” This is when a problem occurred, a day later I was checking my credit card and noticed a charge of $596.42 from Thrifty car rental. The first thing I did was checked my email to see if they notified me of these charges but there was nothing. I had no missed calls or any other messages notifying me for a reason. I knew there were no damages to the car. From here I called customer service, they told me that there was a $400 charge for smoking in the vehicle. For whoever is reading this I do not smoke and I am actually a vary health conscious person. I told customer service that I do not smoke and I did not have anyone in my car that smokes. The only thing they told me to do was open an official dispute with corporate.

But also, the only way to contact corporate is through email (customerrelations@hertz.com) and it can take up to 5 to 7 business days. After I sent the email, I decided to drive up to the location I rented the car from to see if I could talk to someone face to face. The manager gave me a pamphlet with a different customer service number to call. He stated that there was nothing he could do because it’s a completely different department. I asked if we both could walk to the car to identify any signs of smoking but the car was actually already rented out. After more customer service phone calls and speaking with the manager I finally decided to go home and wait for a response from corporate.

On January 2, 2020 corporate notified me that they would credit me back the $400. This is the email they sent me ("Thank you for contacting us. I appreciate the opportunity to review your concerns. As a one time gesture of concern, a credit in the amount of $400.00 is being processed to the account billed. This represents the disputed charge for smoking. The adjustment is being made at this time, but may not appear on the next monthly statement due to billing cut-off dates. Thank you again for contacting us.")

In all, for future car rentals I will confirm that there is no problem with the person I dropped the vehicle off with and if another issue occurs I will wait for a reply from corporate. I wasted a lot of my time trying to talk with the manager and customer service. As far as not being notified for the smoking charge, I am not sure if it’s in the fine print that they don’t have to notify customers but it came across as shady business ethics. If you ever decide to rent from Thrifty be aware of unauthorized charges, there’s plenty of bad reviews online.

We are camping in Myrtle Beach this week and decided to rent a car for four days. The online website quoted us $117.00 for an economy car, which included the car and all the associated fees. We booked the car, and received notification that we could pay by debit or credit card when we picked it up. My husband jogged four miles to the airport, and upon arrival, was told:

    1. They were all out of cars.
    2. He would be charged and extra $15.00 per day because he used a debit card instead of a credit card.

    3. The bill would be $191.00 because of all the taxes and fees.

WHAT THE HECK? So he came back to the campground driving a huge red pick-up truck, which ended up costing us nearly $50.00 per day--certainly NOT the $19.00 per day we agreed to pay. We needed the vehicle and feel that this was a true flim-flam. I did contact Thrifty (to be fair), and was told that the Myrtle Beach branch is privately owned, so I would need to contact those individuals. I've already lost too much time and money already, so I'm moving on and will NEVER use Thrifty again. Ever.

We were on our way to return the car the day after Christmas. It was snowing and the roads were a bit slick. As we're backing out of the driveway, a car came sliding down the hill and crashed into the driverside bumper. I called Thrifty to file a claim and send a tow. They said ETA was 90 mins. Upon waiting for the tow, we got hit again thus damaging the bumper even more. I filed another complaint. I then get a call from Triple A saying roads are closed, no pickup. That's totally fine.

These are instances that are beyond anyone's control. It's what happened the next 4 days that is infuriating (today is the 4th day. I am currently on hold with thrifty as I type this). I have called thrifty every day since the incident and have spoken to approximately 9 different people. Tows were ordered then cancelled without notifying us. Each time that I'd call thrifty to check status, I was told that the tows were cancelled. I ended up calling Triple A myself. They were more helpful and surprised that I was calling and not thrifty.

Long story short, car got towed 3 days later and it took about 5 phone calls to now find out where it was towed to. Turns out it went to Ontario, Ca instead of LAX (I'm still trying to find out why that happened). My other concern is, are they going to charge us for these last 4 days?? Guess what?? I HAVE NO ** CLUE! because thrifty said that my case is still opened and financials can't be reviewed till 24hrs later after notifications get sent to both thrifty locations!!!! Every time I demanded to speak to a manager I always got talked down from it. That's my fault for not being more of a **. I am BESIDE myself!! Had a red eye flight so the guy in the counter ask me about the gas if I will pay prepaid or not. I opted not to pay prepaid. Upon getting the car. The gas gauge was 1/2 gas full. I did not verify the gas gauge in the contract. I was thinking that the mark was correct. Everything went smoothly. Usually, I dont check the bill. But this time I just verified with my card how much the final Thrifty charge. It was almost 20 more than the one that was quoted.

Called their customer service. They told me because the car was not returned with full tank. I told them that the tank was 1/2 when I rented it and even returned with 3/4 tank full. They said that it was full when I rented it. The good thing that I took a photo of the gas gauge in the rental lot. What a tricky thing that they do. Imagine thousands of car renters daily that they charge extra for gas that they themselves just mark it full instead of 1/2 gas? Very tricky business model.

No other rental had any line. I won't blame the two women working, but to have that much demand and no supply of workers to help, I can see why some people got out of line and went to a competitor. Getting through the line took an hour and fifteen minutes. In line, there was another renter who came back who didn't have the right license plate number with it and they had to readjust.

For me, I got my car and noticed "low tire pressure." Being so early in the morning (at this point it was 1:45 am), I pressed on to the hotel. The next morning I noticed the rear left tire was basically completely flat. I got a dysfunctional car. I called customer service and their solution was to get someone to change the tire and then me to drive back to the airport. All solutions required me to go back to the airport, a massive inconvenience given I work all day and had to get ready for a wedding the next day. I recently rented a car while in the US on business from the DIA location. I was the only one checking in at the time so had a nice chat with the guy, going through the motions of the car rental procedure. He asked if I wanted an upgrade on my car to which I replied no thanks. He asked if I wanted to be covered for the additional insurance to which I firmly said NO thanks as my travel insurance covered it. "Oh but that is a hassle to go through if something happens" he said. I replied that I work in travel and that I work with my insurance company very closely and are happy with the additional coverage they give me so no thank you to the additional coverage. We then went on to talk about the toll road in Denver. As we were getting the paper work ready we chatted about my long flight from Australia. I was asked to sign and off I went.

Fast forward and I come home to a charge on my credit card for the additional insurance. WHAT? I firmly declined that at check and actually recall the conversation. So I tried emailing Thrifty on 3 different emails to look into the charges. ALL emails did not go through - permanent error message. So I filled in an online feedback. No reply. I touched base with their media center. No reply. So I went on Facebook and their community page and reached out to them that way. The replies I have received are a "Too bad you signed the agreement. You pay" type reply. "We can't go off a conversation" type reply. So I dove a little further into their community page and imagine my surprise the amount of other people this has happened to. Firmly decline additional coverage - still get charged anyway. We are all in the same boat.

It is unethical. Unprofessional and is basically stealing money. NEVER AGAIN will I recommend this company (I work in travel industry so believe me this is going to be wide spread) nor will I ever consider them or Dollar and Hertz as they are all in the same company and most likely rip off their customers too. Used Thrifty's online customer feedback site to lodge a complaint, and upon submitting it was promised that Thrifty would contact me -- which, of course, never happened. I disputed the charge with Chase (I used their Mileage Explorer card to rent the vehicle), and today, two months later, I received a letter saying that Chase had sided with me in the matter. This is gratifying, of course -- and I will never rent from Thrifty again, and urge everyone reading this to avoid Thrifty at all costs.

I am another victim of Thrifty Car Rental's practice of overcharging however they can. I was scheduled to testify for the FBI in London, KY. They flew me in to Knoxville, TN where I had a car reserved with Thrifty. I paid the reservation price of $104.57 on 8/27 at pick up and was to return the car to the same location on 8/29. I ended up having to testify another day, so the FBI rescheduled my flight out of Lexington, KY on 8/30. On the morning of 8/29, I called the Thrifty office in Knoxville and explained the situation. The female that I spoke to said that it would be no problem, that the additional charge would be $43.57, that there was not a Thrifty at the Lexington airport, so return it to Hertz. This is what I did.

When I got home, I found that on 9/1 they had charged another $35 for a late fee, which they ultimately credited back to me. On 9/1 they placed another charge for $43.84. I called the office and was told that they did not know what it was for and I would need to speak with the manager...who would be out until the following Tuesday. I called the following Tuesday and was told he still was not available and that they would look into it. On 9/4 they charged an additional $261.68! I called again and this time the female promised that she would look into it and call me back. She did actually call me back and stated that she had no idea what the charges were, but that they would be removed from my credit card within 48 hours...but they were not.

On 9/12 they charged another $54.26 and all of the other charges were still there. I called again and was told I could speak to the owner because he was in that day...but he was in the garage. He would call me back. He never did. I went through this for 2 more days, gave up and disputed the charges on my credit card. Today the bank called to inform me that in fine print on the Thrifty Contract it states that you will be charged $1.75/mile if you drop it off at another location. This is NOT what I was told when I called to make the change! If I had been, I would have asked the FBI to change my flight back to Knoxville.

Even if I agreed with this (which I don't), that charge would be $301 for a grand total of $449.14...which is ridiculous for a 3 day rental. Instead, I am being charged over $600! This is the second time that Thrifty has screwed me on charges, but I promise it will be the last. And I will tell everyone that I know...and anyone that will listen what a RIP-OFF company this is. NEVER AGAIN!

We used Auto Europe to rent (thru Thrifty) an Intermediate SUV including unlimited miles, liability insurance, collision damage coverage and theft protection. Upon picking up the car on 12 Sep, we inquired about an upgrade to an automatic and was told (by the manager Mr. Mark **) that there were no automatic, intermediate SUVs available, but for a “small charge” we could get an Audi A6 that was automatic.

We were then told that the new car would be a total of $420 EUR plus tax or $585.39 USD, which came out to an extra $217.50 USD from the original rental. I remarked that the difference of $217.50 would be ok, assuming that Dollar would subtract the $367.89 USD we had already paid to Auto Europe when the final bill was due. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that upon our return, we were going to be charged the full $585.39 USD! That would make the final bill a whopping $953.28, or roughly 260% of our original bill after tax…hardly a “small charge.”

To make matters worse, the first Audi they gave us was unacceptable and had a broken drivers seat. The second car they gave us, which we took, ended up having numerous issues. Approximately halfway through the trip, we got a low air caution on the tires. The next day, we got a warning that there was a fault with the brakes. The worst problem was when it started raining towards the end of the trip, we found out that the windshield wipers were barely usable and made driving in the rain extremely difficult and downright unsafe at night in the rain (in a country that gets rain almost daily).

At best, this was perhaps a misunderstanding, but I don’t think so. We were intentionally led to believe that it would only be a “small upgrade” after I mentioned numerous times that we only wanted to get the automatic if it wouldn’t cost very much. I have no problem driving a manual and actually wanted the intermediate SUV in order to be up higher off the ground to see better. I showed the manager my paperwork from AutoEurope with the $367.89 rate and we talked about the difference being not too bad. In the end, had the manager been forthright with us, there is absolutely no way we would have considered an upgrade that cost more than TWICE the original bill! Shame on you Thrifty for not making this right and for stealing from me...

When I received my receipt I had a fuel charge of over $140! Not to mention they said I drove 436 miles when I had only driven the car less than 120 miles. The first time I called they said they could reduce the amount by half and I refused. I called back a second time and was hung up on and the third time I called they said they would only charge me $39. The only reason I agreed to pay is because I didn’t want to waste any more of my time. Lesson learned! I will never rent from Thrifty, Dollar or Hertz. This is a shady, unethical business. They said there was nothing they can do because I didn’t call right away, which I did. They said the fees were listed in the rental agreement and that I should have taken the time to read it. With the 20 people behind me waiting to get their rental, I asked if that is how they run their business with no regard to customer service and that perhaps that should be a policy for the sales agent to mention tolls when you're in an unfamiliar area. I reserved a car for my wife and daughter online thinking Thrifty would be a reputable outfit. Couldn't be more wrong, at least not at the Ontario, CA airport location but probably representative of the corporate culture. The first car they were given was dangerously defective and was automatically engaging the emergency braking in traffic. Took it back the next day and were given a replacement car; luckily they weren't injured in an accident as a result of the car Thrifty issued. They weren't given a vehicle condition form to fill out for the second car but my daughter was smart enough to take pictures of a repainted area of the car.

When they turned it in tonight (8/12), they were told they would have to file out a form taking responsibility for the damage and that Thrifty would never have given out a car with that type of damage. All lies and incompetence. My wife refused to sign of course and so the thug checking the car in called his manager who said they were going to file a claim against us. Good thing we have evidence of their deceit (Proposed Litigation Headline: "Teenage girl outsmarts corrupt Thrifty cartel in Ontario!") but I hope this review can help you avoid their scam by going with a different rental car agency. I recently booked car rental from Thrifty at PHL airport. I'm sharing my pathetic experience with them I had - 1. First of all their shuttle service is very poor, we had to wait about 30 minutes before a shuttle came to pick up us at the airport. 2. When we reached to rental office to pick up the car, they didn't honor my pre-booking price offered from AAA. I had to argue with them and show the proof from AAA, then only they applied AAA discount and honored the AAA price finally. This took them around 45 minutes and almost ruined my 1.5 hours in just picking up the car.

    3. They asked me for child car seat as it was mentioned in my booking details through AAA, however they didn't communicate me that I have to pay extra for that. I took the car seat assuming it's already included in the rental. They asked me sign the paper, which I did without paying much attention to it as they already delayed too much.

    4. After enjoying my trip, I returned the car and till this point I had no issues other than some initial hassles during the pick up. They told me that they will email me the final billing details over email. 5. Later I received my details on email, I was shocked to find that they charged about $98 extra for the car seat rental. Charging $98 for a car seat rental that hardly costs $40 is completely non-sense and inhuman. I was shocked to see as it was never communicated to me. I called their customer service but they too didn't listen to me.

    6. 3 Weeks later I received another bill at my home for tolls, I paid all tolls my self as cash. However there seems 3 tolls during my trip which don't have any cash facility and send the toll charge over email. The toll cost was about $4.50, however Thrifty send me bills for $49, which is completely non-sense. I'm so furious to see all these hidden charges, they are just looting the customers later once you're trapped in just by looking at the cheaper rates to save few bucks. However we end up paying more than other rental services. I'll never ever book Thrifty Car Rental again in my life. Thanks. Jitendra

Car pickup was relatively easy, but had to wait 15 minutes to get physically checked out *after* I got in the car. The problem was post rental, and it revealed the worst part of their customer service approach. I dropped the car off, realized 30 minutes later I left an item in the back seat. I am local to the location. Sparing the depressing details of my - literally - three hours total on the phone with people who didn't know policy or even cared (and many not -answered/returned calls), three weeks later not only is there no resolution.

There is no compensation despite the fact that I made at least a dozen attempts to contact them at the airport, and over the phone at both the airport and their headquarters. It was as clear as it could possibly be that the item was stolen right after drop-off: it was a bright green item 30 inches long, and simply could not be missed and left for the next customer. The phone calls were incredibly frustrating and only one person out of at least seven (from what I remember) took any corporate responsibility. Rental companies are not generally known for customer service, one of the biggest ironies in business. They seem to have all competed to become the lowest common denominator: if they all act like this, then it doesn't matter which company you rent from. However, this is truly a new low and will prevent me from renting again from Shifty, and I'll be sure to pass along this story whenever I have the chance.

I never write bad reviews (or any reviews really) but I feel compelled to in this case. Do not use Thrifty. The location in Philadelphia isn't at the airport and it can take a long time to get there. I waited in line for over an hour to get a different car than the model I reserved. They pushed extra insurance on me even though I had paid for insurance when I make the booking (I probably should have said no but I wasn't 100% sure and was in a hurry). Very shady business practice and in the end it wasn't even cheaper than using a better rental car company.

Worst of all, I was given an unsafe car with a major steering issue. At speeds above 50 it would drift significantly to the right or left after I had stopped turning the wheel. I didn't have time to take it back, as I was driving to a friend's rehearsal dinner very far from the nearest Thrifty location and I assumed (rightfully going by some of these other reviews) that they wouldn't be helpful anyway so I just had to deal with it for a few days.

When I returned the car at a different location I told them about it (risking that they would think I did it and charge me for repairs) because I didn't want the next person to get into an accident, and they seemed completely unconcerned. I've owned and driven quite a few clunkers over the years but I've never felt so unsafe in a car before. I know that ** happens, but the fact that the Thrifty staff shrugged me off gave me the impression that they weren't going to fix the car before giving it to another customer and was the final nail in the coffin. I will never use Thrifty again and I recommend you don't either. They don't care about safety and with the extra fees they try to charge you it isn't even cheaper in the end.

Absolutely do NOT rent from this company regardless of price; it is NOT worth it! This company is out to scam its customers. I recently rented a vehicle from them through Hotwire. When I picked up the car, the agent asked my colleague and I if we wanted damage protection. I specifically told him no, I don't need it, my credit card already covers me so it's worthless to me. He acknowledged this, told me he would just need my card for the rental deposit, so we signed off and drove away.

Surely enough, three days later my account gets a massive charge from Thrifty (for more than the price of the entire rental). When I returned the vehicle I spoke to the same rep, who apologized for the mistake and said he needed to call the manager to resolve it. The manager was supposed to be there in five minutes tops. We waited half an hour, constantly following up with the employee, and no manager ever came. We had to leave to catch our flights, left a number with the rep, and were assured that we would receive a call back immediately.

Not surprising, no phone call ever came. So the next day I waited on hold for an hour, only to talk to the generic customer service line. This new rep offered me half the price back as "good faith," which I rejected because it makes no sense for me to sacrifice close to $100 for an employee's clear and admitted mistake. So I asked for the number to call the Houston rental store directly and the rep simply read back to me the generic number that I already called. After questioning him, he told me that their individual stores don't have numbers.... so essentially they make it impossible to contact the people who screw up rentals and then try to scam their customers out of their money. Now, my only option is to email another generic customer service source, hoping they will actually review the situation. But honestly, I expect no response.

If you rent through this company BEWARE. A $20/day rental will almost certainly become a $40/day rental, if not more. This kind of sketchy business practice does not come from employees, this is a company policy to steal from customers. I have never experienced such a horrible and appalling situation with a rental car, and my experience is not unique. There were several other customers with complaints at the location in Houston, and after all of this happened I went and read other reviews online, this kind of situation is prevalent within the organization and it is a systemic, repeated abuser of its customers. Again, do NOT rent from this company unless you want to lose a lot of money and time. I can't imagine a worse rental car company out there, so simply choose someone else.

I had a reservation for a rental car through Thrifty at 23:30 on 6/21/2019 at Chicago- Midway airport. My flight was delayed due to weather and the desk closed at midnight. I was assured multiple times by the customer service department that for delays due to weather that an agent would remain onsite to complete our rental reservation. The flight finally got into Chicago-Midway a little before 3am on 6/22/2019. There was no one at the car rental desk. I contacted the customer service department again and let them know that no one was there and they said there should be but I assured them there was no one. I was placed on hold while they contacted corporate to leave a message for them. The representative returned to the phone and told me that corporate will give me a call and we would have to wait until the desk opened at 6 am to get our rental.

I asked for a supervisor and was told that no one was available. My destination was not close to the airport and I had to take an Uber to my destination so I could rest because I was not waiting at the airport for 3 hours because a Thrifty agent did not abide by their own policy to wait on a customer who is delayed due to weather. I called the customer service department a little after noon on 6/22/2019 to cancel my reservation and receive a refund and was advised that it was too late. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told, again, that no one was available to assist but that I could log a complaint ticket with Thrifty. I have logged my complaint ticket and it should be resolved within 20 days... Lastly, it is 6/27/2019 and I still haven't heard from corporate. I will not rent through Thrifty again. Thank you.

I recently traveled to Orlando and rented a car through Thrifty via a third party online search. Once I arrived in Orlando I went to the car rental desk and charged an additional $200 for a deposit even though I had paid the cost of the rental in full through the third party website. I was then instructed to the parking garage to pick up the car, when I went to the rental agent booth the agent told me keys were in the car, just pick one. No one came out and did a pre-inspection of the vehicle, but not damage visible. I then proceeded to the checkout gate, the agent there barely acknowledged me and was on her phone having a personal conversation the entire time.

Turn in day, I arrive at the rental return and an inspector comes over. He spent a mere 30 seconds in the car to check mileage, fuel level and scan the bar code. I was handed a receipt which did not note any damage or addition charges. I get home to Texas and I check my bank account to see if they put my deposit back into my account and to my surprise I see a charge for $300. I call customer service and ask what it was all about. She said that there was damage to the car, and I asked her what damage. The inspector gave me a receipt which didn't indicate any charges or damage. I asked to speak to a manager and this was a task as I got the run around, finally I get a manager.

The manager says someone smoked in the car, I said nobody smoked in the car and I have more than 15 people that can confirm not no smoking, no eating, no drinking took place in the car. Call back again, we have proof, pictures, my response, send me the pictures. No pictures sent. I ask for corporate headquarters number, hold, I have to look it up, agent gives me a number that doesn't work. Call customer service back, phone system down. Call back again, customer service closed. At this point I am interviewing attorneys to fight this company because they are doing dirty business. Don't rent from this company under any circumstances.

My experience with Thrifty with respect to the car/pickup/drop off was good. But post billing is the worst to track down. Every time you call customer service you get "the system is down" when you choose post rentals department. But they are readily available when you need to rent a new one out. Remember to check all charges they include on the bill. I had a charge of $50 for fuel purchase option. "What is Fuel Purchase Option and how does it work? For convenience, you may purchase a full tank, or half tank of fuel at the time of rental, at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations. This method eliminates the need for you to refill the tank before returning." This was never ever discussed with me during the purchase. The agent told me I had to return the car full tank otherwise they would charge me a whole $5 extra for every gallon missing. So what was the $50 charge then? I am going to make sure I get my money back on this.

I booked my Boston airport rental in advance through Hotwire. When I arrived to pick up the car, the price they told me was so much higher than what Hotwire quoted. When I asked why, the clerk told me it was because they were including a fee of $18/rental day for the toll pass (the rental itself was only $20/day), which did not include the cost of the tolls. Appalled, I immediately turned it down; Payless car rental at the same airport has a fee of only 2.95/day + cost of tolls, and only activated on the days you used the tolls.

I just figured we would pay cash for the tolls. The clerk NEVER explained that in MA there are no options for cash payments (at least on I-90) and that there would be a $15 fee PER TOLL tagged onto the bill if I declined. Driving back and forth from Boston to Worcester on I-90 there are about 4 tolls each way, which are not clearly identified, so I didn't even know! I later learned that MA just bills by plate, with no violations for not having a transponder. I assumed that Thrifty would just bill the cost of the tolls -- not so at all. They sent a $108 bill, which was the cost of the tolls plus $90 in "administrative fees."

It seems that Thrifty's policy is one of dishonesty -- provide as little information to the customer in advance, knowing that most people will not read the very fine print on the bottom of the contract, and that people renting cars probably don't live in the area and don't know it well enough to know that cash options are not available. The customer service (or anti-customer service, to be more accurate) reps were so incredibly unhelpful and refused to provide any kind of refund. I will NEVER, under any circumstances, rent from this company again. Some people believe that all car rental companies do this but that isn't true at all. If you ever need a cheap rental from the Boston airport, try Payless instead. The company also has its problems but at the very least they don't scam renters out of money for tolls.

BEWARE: If you take a Thrifty vehicle on the highway south from the Denver airport (i.e. towards Colorado Springs) it is an automated toll road with NO BOOTHS. The system photographs the license plate and sends a bill to Thrifty. Thrifty then forwards you the toll bill WITH A $15 ADMINISTRATIVE FEE for each toll. In my case, this resulted in $45 of fees on top of the approx $12 in tolls.

This is a total scam. I called the "Violations and Tolls" service center and was able to get the charge reduced from $53 to about $26. Nonetheless, no one at the desk warns you about this or give you an option for how to proactively pay your tolls. Worst rental experience I have ever had. I booked through Hotwire and was charged $220 along with an additional $72 for insurance. When arriving at the airport, nobody was there to tell us where to pick up the car, as the kiosk was empty. Once we figured out where the shuttle was and how to get to the rental place, we waited there for about 45 minutes as there were not many people working. Overall, the car was fine and it was convenient to have on the vacation. When we returned I noticed I was charged an additional $190 by Thrifty for "insurance" which we had already booked through Hotwire. (Because everyone needs double insurance on their cars RIGHT!!)

When I called to dispute this claim, I waited on hold for 30 minutes and as I was trying to gather the information for the call, the person on the phone informed me SHE WOULD ONLY HOLD FOR TWO MINUTES WHEN I JUST WAITED ON HOLD FOR OVER A HALF HOUR. She then suggested that I read next time and there was nothing she could do to help me besides give me 50% off the insurance (which was $65) even though I already had insured the car before they signed us up for this extra insurance. She was extremely rude and lacking customer service and I'll honestly be surprised if she even refunded me the money.

Then I find out that we were also charged $15 for the shuttle we HAD to take from the airport to the rental place. We were never informed that there was a shuttle, or that nobody would be there to tell us how and where to pick up our rental car. So after wandering around the airport for a half an hour with my 90 year old grandmother we found their "complimentary shuttle" that apparently charges you $15 to take. So I thought I was getting a deal on this car for the week for $220 and ended up paying almost $500. Would absolutely not recommend.

That price was too good to be true as I couldn't get that kinda deal on any other rental services website - but here is the catch. Upon arrival the representative mentioned that I need to drop it off on Monday before 1:00 pm to avoid any additional charges - I thought that was ridiculous to mention that at the very last minute as he had left me with no option at all. I chose to pick up the vehicle and deal with it later.

So on Monday I returned the vehicle around 5ish and tried informing the Thrifty Customer service rep about the extra charges which I shouldn't be paying as I returned the vehicle on time. They went on coming up with BS excuses saying that "The drop off location is closed and there is no way we can verify that you dropped it off on time." Anyway nothing much they could have done hence I requested them to speak to a supervisor, I was told they will call me whenever they are available - it's been lil over a week and I am still waiting for the call. Anyway I ended up being charged $237 as opposed to $166 which most companies had listed their SUVs or even lesser. Learnt it the hard way, will never ever deal with them - First and Last. Glen

We decided to go with Thrifty because it was slightly cheaper than the other rental places. They quoted us at $350 after putting $96 down. We got off the plane with all of the kids exhausted and ready to get to our room and relax so we rushed to the Thrifty in the airport to pick up our van. The guy takes and looks up our reservation and after he adds the ridiculous amount of money for added fees that he would only explain as mandatory insurance tells us our total is almost $1,200.

We argue that the email and site both said $350, he said that was just for the van and not all the taxes, fees and 2 child seats, which weren't even counted as a fee on the original price quote. I don't mind paying for the car seats if I HAD BEEN INFORMED. I do however see this as a bit much. The quote of $350 is an $850 difference than what we were charged. This was a vacation to Disney for our kids and our budget was slammed by this and I felt the rest of the vacation was impacted by it. Not to mention the rental van would say the battery was low every single morning and would stall out on initial start and then run fine on the next start (I tried to call the store to inform them of this and was hung up on two different occasions).

Never again will I rent from them. I feel they should refund anything they charged over the original quote, it won't happen but it should. I also feel like they should fix the math skills of whatever person or program gives the quotes 'cause this was not a little price difference. To top it all off we got a bill today from them saying we didn't pay a $1.35 toll and they are charging us $12.00 for that.... Didn't they get enough out of us, are they even sure it was us? This is a copy of the complaint I sent to Thrifty regarding their lack of caring and customer service. I prepaid for a rental 4/17-4/24 I went to pick up said car. My Mastercard would not read on your credit card reader. The lady says the machine is finicky. I was told unless I had another card I could not have my rental as they do not have chip readers and cannot enter the card number. This is BS. I had no other card. I prepaid the rental and now being told AT THE AIRPORT I can't have a rental. I went three steps down and got a rental at Enterprise. No problem. The people at your counter are rude and uneducated in your company's standard operating procedures. No one would help or take that extra step to keep my business. No worries. I will never rent from Thrifty again. Enterprise is more than happy to take my good money. Get with the times and get a freaking machine that reads chips.

Rented a car on 3/19/19 for a four day trip to Lake Tahoe. Of course, they didn't have the category car I reserved, but "For $25 a day extra" we can put you in a Jeep Patriot. Did the same thing to the two people in front of me - not me. When I made that clear, they suddenly found one available. But that was the BEST part of my dealings with them. The car was stolen from Hotel Valet the next morning. Reno police policy is that Thrifty, the car's owner, had to file the report but Thrifty ABSOLUTELY refused! Talking to numerous people throughout the day. Of course, no offer to replace the car so I could get to Lake Tahoe. Only the comment "We'll continue to charge you for the car until you turn it in." The hotel had video of the theft, the police were aware of the situation, but Thrifty attempted to cash in.

Sure enough, they tried. I locked my card, and within two weeks, they were attempting to put through charges totaling over $3700! Finally, they hired an outside recovery/repo agency man, who actually had a brain. I provided him with the documentation showing I'd reported it stolen, in writing, to Thrifty. A week later, he'd found the car (not sure where, but I'll bet it had been sitting in the police impound lot!). Then, Thrift sent me a "final bill" for $980 - the original rental plus three "extra" weeks, late turn-in charges, etc. Can't put it on my insurance since Thrifty never reported it stolen. Then they convinced my Credit Card company, Capital One, to put through the $980 charge, since they'd run a $500 reserve on initial rental. Now, I have to dispute the charge, too!

DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY, ITS SISTER COMPANY DOLLAR, OR HERTZ, THEIR CORPORATE OWNER!!! Much better to pay a dollar or two a day more, and deal with a company that doesn't behave both incompetently and criminally (they did make a false report to the repo guy, who was ready to use that info to file a warrant against me).

We had booked a flight and car rental bundle with Expedia. When we went to pick up the vehicle in San Antonio, TX the woman behind the counter pushed us hard to upgrade. Since we were visiting my wife's brother who is bed-ridden we said there was no reason to upgrade since the vehicle would sit most of the time. They said ok, told us where we could pick up our car and when we got there we had a choice of 3 vehicles (out of many). When I asked if the 4th vehicle in that line was available I was told that vehicle would be an upgrade.

We chose one of the 3 that were offered. We dropped the car off after 5 days and they handed us a receipt as we headed for our flight. Didn't have time to deal with it then but later realized they charged another $104 on top of my booking. Spent an hour and a half on the phone with Expedia who was talking to Thrifty and they refuse to budge. Bait and switch is what this is and I would warn anyone to stay away from Thrifty.

We arrived at Dayton airport to pick up our hire car as we have done twice a year for the last ten years only to be told that because my husband's name wasn’t printed in full on his credit card (that’s how our cards are in the UK) then we couldn’t have the car that we had paid £700 for in the UK three months previous. My husband had his passport, driving license, other documents all with full ID on but she said No. We couldn’t believe it, we’ve never had trouble before and what did she expect us to do, Dayton is a good hour from our property and a two hundred dollar taxi fare which we would have paid but we need a car when visiting the USA.

So, we went to another hire car counter, DOLLAR, they were happy to hire to us for another twelve hundred dollars which we gladly paid. Otherwise we were stranded. Thrifty wouldn’t even allow an American family member meeting us to hire using his credit card as she said they were full. When we asked could he rent our car that we couldn’t have, she said, "No we are full." If I could give minus stars I would, an absolute joke and we will not be hiring from THRIFTY again. Now back to England to see if I can reclaim my money back!

They give unlimited miles and then restrict the areas that you're allowed to go.

The car was inspected on my return, inside and out and given an ok. A full 24 hours after I returned the car, I received a message that I would be charged an additional $300 cleaning fee for smoking, animal hair, spills and stains. I had the car for 2 days and none of the above is true. My two day rental came to $586. Delay your trip, ask you mil for a ride, go anywhere to rent a car other than Thrifty. My wife and I went to FL in February, we did our booking through Hotwire to get the best price on a rental car. The price quoted for a 7 day rental was around $200 which was a great deal, or so we thought. The Thrifty attendant at the airport was not tremendously friendly or easy to understand. We were asked if we wanted to prepay for gas which is something I never do. However given that my drop off time was at 3 30 am I didn't feel like dealing with filling the tank that early in the morning. As we were pulling out of the garage my wife was reviewing the printed contract and she wasn't seeing anything about us prepaying for gas. As a result I asked the Thrifty attendant in the garage if it showed that we prepaid for gas. He quickly looked and confirmed for me that it did.

Upon receiving our credit card statement we see an additional charge for $160. I called to find out the reason and I was informed that it was a fee for not refilling the car. I explained the situation and all they reply there is, "Nothing we can do." I have a number of issues here: I am more than willing to admit that I needed to take a closer look at the contract while in the airport main building. However when I noticed and double checked I was assured that it was on there. I am more than willing to pay the rate at which I thought I had agreed to initially or even the current one as I am partially at fault. This is not something they were willing to do.

Next even if I were to pay the $10 a gallon charge the car we rented was a Chevy Cruze, which has a 13.5 gallon tank. The charge should not exceed $140, why am I being charged $160. The company offered me a $25 discount and at this point I have not taken. I am currently disputing the charge. I am still hopeful that they will work with me to make this right. I will update when this is fully resolved.

Thrifty car rental Ben Gurion Airport -Someone missed big time!!! Or were you avoiding yourself of renting a car!!! I did my booking with Thrifty Israel through Expedia and got my confirmation. I was asking for Economic Automatic car and did a double check that the rental office is in the Terminal. When I have approached the rental counter I was referred to a shuttle bus and after a short waiting I was taking by the shuttle to Thrifty office. At the office I met a friendly staff and I was the only customer! Unfortunately it took 5 minutes to find my booking and then I was told that according the booking record I have booked myself a manual car. When I insisted to have an automatic car they had to make a new reservation. 5 more minutes of waiting (I was advised for the future come to book myself a car directly from the company website and not via Expedia -mistakes happened!)

I had to do CDW insurance (it is mandatory in Israel and I had no problem with it), however I was asking to use the insurance that I had with my American Express card as well. Then I was asked to present letter of coverage from Amex. Since I had no letter I was advised to call Amex and to set it. The staff were friendly and very cooperative and it seems to me that they are trying to make new friends (with me and my wife )- guys come on, I was looking to rent a car in minimum time after 12 hours of flight and I had no interest of making new friends.

I called American Express Canada and after 25 minutes I have got the letter of coverage in my mailbox. 5 more minutes to go and I have got the keys and was instructed to go to the parking lot location into a specific marked spot. Unfortunately the vehicle wasn’t there and and I had to go back into the main office. One of the staff who joined me managed to track the vehicle in a different spot. About 50 minutes after approaching the counter I have find my self hitting the road. When I have returned the car I parked my car in a front of Thrifty’s office

2 minutes later a guy came out of the office and asked me to park the car in the back side. Same problem happened with 3 more drivers - guys - you should have a clear signs at your location. Upon receiving my final bill through my email I have found out that I was charged 3 times more than the original quote that I have got from Expedia. Bottom line I have no intention continue spending my time with the company in order to have back 100 dollars plus minus. I am strongly recommend to stay away of the company in any cost. P.S. At some point I was looking for a candid camera because I was sure that I am a Prank victim. Thank you Thrifty- I don’t think that I will allow myself the pleasure of doing business with you at the future.

Yesterday, I returned a thrifty car in the Miami Airport location, and involuntarily kept the keys in my pocket (I was in a rush since there was a police event in the highway to the airport, and I was running late to take my plane). When I realized about the keys I was in the plane flying to my home country Argentina. Immediately when I arrived I saw the $250 charge for the keys! I am willing to return the keys vis-a-vis a credit of this charge.

My argument is based on the fact that the agent that received the car DID NOT ask about the keys, and moreover he said that everything was ok to go! It did not help that the keys are for a car which engine is turned on with a button, so is not so natural to keep the keys in the car. I called Customer Service without answer. I will decline the charge and get legal advice about, what I consider a planned way to charge your clients more! It is absolutely ridiculous that the agent receiving the car did not have as standard procedure the duty of asking for the keys, and even more, confirming that "you are all set" as he told me. She was extremely rude and aggressive and told me there was nothing she could possibly do to have the price of the contract extension lowered. I am now paying an additional 42% of my overall cost (for 4 days) in order to keep the car for 14 extra hours! The service at Thrifty was inconsiderate, and extremely ignorant, and left me feeling unsettled and distressed. We had a detestable rental experience in December in Orlando. The commercial agent has practiced very aggressive commercial methods which I call forced selling. Upon our return in France we noticed an additional and unexpected 500$ outcharge!!!! While we never asked for an upgrade it looks like the sales agent forced us to upgrade the car as they did have the category we booked available which should result in a free upgrade anyway. Thrifty claims that as we've sign (we've actually been nearly forced to sign!!! Some that was electronic so not easy to read) we are supposed to have agreed Tc&Cs!! They act as pirates!

After a 10 hours flight with our two kids and a 6 hour jet lag you can imagine how fresh we were so the way your agent proceeded it's a complete abuse. We genuinely booked a Jeep Liberty and when we arrived at the desk he immediately proposed a Chevrolet Tahoe which we refused as we did want to pay additional fees. He then proceeded with the paperwork and pushed a screen for my husband to sign electronically, printed the paperwork and put in an envelop promptly directing us to the car park to take our car.

We're French and while we can speak & understand English/American (we both work in foreign language) the clerk agent was speaking very very fast even when asked to repeat, he just didn't made any effort to be clear and was quite aggressive. Secondly, as said we genuinely booked a Jeep Liberty and were given a Chevrolet Equinox. I really see no upgrade in this, this is same car category and when we pick up the car in the underground parking there were only Chevrolet cars: Tahoe, Equinox and a sedan model. That's it. So in a nutshell we've been abused by aggressive and unfair sales methods. Our car category was not available and we've been charged something we never requested. RUN AWAY, do not book any car with this company.

The worse experience ever with HOTWIRE.COM/THRIFTY Car Rental. Both of these place are the worse place to go to because they don't care if you were trying to get an extended contract and/or try to upgrade your vehicle. I was trying to be a loyal customer with Hotwire.com/Thrifty Car Rental to extend my rental with them. All they did was give me the runaround for several hours when I got to the SEATAC airport.

I called the night before with Hotwire.com to see if they can help me with the upgrade from a Compact Car to a 4X4 SUV. The agent on the phone Hotwire.com stated that they can get the deal comparable with Expedia.com; what I was quoted before buying with Expedia.com so I didn't go with Expedia.com and agent told me just to waited till morning to see if they have an SUV available and that the agent would input the quote that I was given from Expedia.com on my Thrifty Car Rental reservation so that Thrifty Car Rental will see it in the morning when I got to the SEATAC airport.

When I got to SEATAC airport to see if they have 4X4 SUV available before paying for the Upgrade and Extend of my vehicle rental contract, Thrifty Car Rental told me if I upgrade from the Compact Car to a 4X4 SUV, I would have to pay over $100 per day plus all the fee. I was shock that the agent from Thrifty Car Rental didn't read the quote that was input to my account from Hotwire.com that they were going to give me the price of Expedia.com price. Thrifty Car Rental told me now to call Hotwire.com to see what they can do for me. Now this is when both HOTWIRE.COM/THRIFTY Car Rental started to give me the runaround.

Long story short I explain everything from Hotwire.com agent the night before, Thrifty Car Rental at SEATAC airport, back to Hotwire.com on the phone; that they were no notes stating I was going to get an upgrade that was comparable with Expedia.com price that was supposed to be input to my account and that both HOTWIRE.COM/THRIFTY Car Rental would not be able to HONOR the quote that was given to me from the start. So thankfully I was able to talk to Expedia.com and Fox Car Rental to be able to get a better rate and cancel my reservation with Hotwire.com/Thrifty Car Rental SEATAC airport.

When I returned the compact car with Thrifty Car Rental I read the EARLY RETURN FEE, of $25 will be applied so I was ok with that. Then Thrifty Car Rental said that I would have to call Hotwire.com to get my refund I was supposed to get back because I returned the car less time of my contract and only used it for about 3-4 day of my contract. Hotwire.com stated that unfortunately they can't do anything about it and they all Contract are final with no consideration at all. That is why I would NEVER go through Hotwire.com and Thrifty Car Rental ever again and will make sure to let everyone know that both of these place will give you the runaround and best to just pay a bit more for less headache.

BEWARE: If I could give this company no stars I would. This company likes to take advantage of people and take their money. I was so excited to rent a car for the very first time and go to Spokane for a friend's wedding. Now it will haunt me for the rest of my life. First of all, nobody walked around the car with me to check for damages and it was very dark at night in the lot. I checked the whole vehicle the best I could and everything looked fine to me. My parents have gotten car rentals before and an employee would always go around the car and note damages with my parents and usually there were noticeably things wrong with the car. This one looked like there was no damage so I had nothing to take note of.

I barely drove the car in the week I was there for the wedding. I just drove the car to get breakfast or dinner and see a bit of Spokane. I believe it was 150 miles in total for the week I was there. Upon returning the car, the inspection lady was very pushy. Before I even got out of the vehicle she was very forceful in her tone and was trying to talk to me. I still had to gather my luggage and she was pushing paperwork at me and telling me to sign things. I asked her if I could please have a minute to gather my belongings out of the car. She was very rude and inspected the HELL out of the car. I have seen my parents rent cars before and have never experienced any of this.

She was looking and every nook and cranny to purposely find something. And she did. She told me she found a "dent" which I couldn't even see in the daylight. I had to ask her to point it out to me because I literally couldn't even see it. I tried talking to the lady about it and demanded a manager which she would not allow. She forced me to write a statement and sign it which I should have never signed looking back on it. In my statement I said how I felt I was being taken advantage of. The company ended up filing a claim against me for at least 900 dollars for damages that I did not even do to the car. The company sent at least 20 pictures to me in which you could see nothing and zero damage.

I don't make very much money so I had to go with this company as it was much cheaper than any other option and what was supposed to be a trip to celebrate good friends has turned my life into a nightmare. So much for trying to save money. I will never rent a car again because of this experience and want people to know that this company likes to purposely gouge people of their money and take advantage of them. I feel like we need to come together as a community and expose this company for who they are. If anybody is interested in starting a lawsuit against this company please contact me!

The keychain had a note that a 250.00 smoking fee would be charged if you smoked in the vehicle so there was no way we were going to smoke in it. We offered to go vacuum car out because it had sand in it and they refused. We got the manager and he was very unprofessional. He told us that he would give us a hundred dollars off the charge and the normal charge was 400.00, even though the contract stated a 250.00 charge. There was absolutely no negotiating with him. You could have literally picked the ash up with your fingers. They just wanted to prove gouge us with the ridiculous charges.

I pre-booked & paid for a rental car online with Hotwire.com for a total of $434.59 (which included: $265.59 - 8 day rental, $179.00 - taxes and fees less $10 discount). When I picked the car up at the Thrifty Car Rental - Sky Harbor Airport, Phoenix, AZ location, I verbally declined the Loss Damage Waiver coverage with the Thrifty desk agent and then was asked to sign the screen for what I assumed was notice of declining the coverage.

However, my credit card was then charged for the declined Loss Damage Waiver along with other miscellaneous fees for taxes (again) & a concession fee recovery all of which was above & beyond what Hotwire already charged me for taxes & miscellaneous fees. The total of the EXTRA fees I was charged for including the Loss Damage Waiver which I declined verbally was $341.38 ($255.92 Loss Damage Waiver, $33.38 - Concession Fee Recovery, $52.08 - tax) which is outrageous given that those fees almost total the full amount of the actual rental itself.

Ultimately, I am seeking a refund of no less than $255.92 for the Loss Damage Waiver which I declined but was scammed into signing for under the pretense that I was signing to decline said coverage AND a refund of the $33.38 Concession Fee Recovery & $52.08 tax unless someone can explain to me what these fees are for given that I already paid $179.00 in taxes & fees to Hotwire for this rental. I am attempting to work with Thrifty to get a refund but to date they are not being cooperative in this matter. I have also filed a complaint with the BBB regarding this matter after reading several complaints of the same scam/rip-off by Thrifty Car Rental.

I am very disappointed with my Car Trawler/Thrifty experience. I thought I was saving money on my rental, but it turns out that I wasn't and actually paid more once the taxes were added on at the end. My Orlando Thrifty rental was fine. I got to choose my minivan for a two-week rental. No problem there. Returning the vehicle was fine also. I was surprised when I got home and saw my email from Thrifty adding on another $111. for taxes. This should have been disclosed to me at the counter or through Car Trawler.

When we approached the counter, the representative told me there is no insurance on this car and we need to book additional insurance. As a business travel I've had many of those experiences before. I told the guy, we don't need extra insurance. He said, but there is no insurance at all. I called the travel agent immediately and the lady confirmed, that we have basic insurance. So, the representative at the counter just wanted to screw us. We forced not to buy any more insurance and we got our car.

After returning the car we got an invoice of $464.30 instead of the $270.05 on the confirmation email of the travel agent. We are in the procedure to file a complaint about the behavior of your staff at Munich Airport and we will post this also in all Social Media. We will not accept that people who are traveling to Germany got screwed by the employees of Thrifty.

In short: you pay for what you get, and at Thrifty you're paying for a terrible experience, and customer service is abysmal. Long story: I've tried Thrifty at BWI twice now and both experiences were horrible and both ended with me going with a different service. First experience, made reservation online, we get there ready to pick up the cars (rented 2 cars online). They charge us extra fees (late pickup fee, 600 hold on credit and insist on adding their insurance because we booked "luxury SUV's). This would sort of make sense but they don't even have luxury SUV's (we reserved full size SUV online) nor did they at the time have ANY SUV's available. They told us to take Chrysler 200's instead and because we prepaid they would not give us a refund for the different rate for a sedan vs a SUV that we reserved.

Second experience was today 1/7/19, I had forgotten about my first terrible experience and made the horrible mistake of making another reservation with Thrifty online again. I use my credit card but I made a reservation for my girlfriend because my credit card provides renters insurance. We get there, the very unhelpful and rude rep tells us reservation name and credit card name must match, ok no problem. "Can you change either the form of payment or the driver's name to match my GF?" Also had a CC ready. "No I can't make any changes, you have to call customer service to make any changes."

We call customer service, they tell us to call a different number (after waiting for 30 mins to get to someone). We call the number (another 20 mins to get to someone). Person says she can't make changes but can cancel the previous reservation and create a new one with me as the driver and still use my payment, she says she has to speak to the front desk in order to complete the transaction. During this time there's another customer who arrived and first thing out his mouth was "I have a complaint."

So we have to wait another 30 minutes on hold while the front desk lady resolves the problem the other customer has and for the record she sent him away to call the same customer service number and he is livid and pissed. Finally it's our turn, we give her the phone, she talks to customer service. No problem. "Send the new confirmation number and we'll be good to go." I asked several times, "Can you give me a confirmation number now?" "No everything has to be sent via email." Another 15 mins goes by until we get the email. We give the email to the front desk lady, she says it's the same confirmation number as before, so the customer rep on the phone didn't make the changes and just sent out the exact same information in a new email.

At this point 2.5 hours have passed and no solution in sight. I'm livid. I walk up to Enterprise, "How much for a rental?" They give me the rates which in total was about $20 more which was fine. I'm helped by almost all 5 staff members at Enterprise, extremely professional. They even waive the additional driver fee which is what Thrifty wasted 2.5hrs of my life for.

I call back Thrifty customer service to get a refund for my money since they never provided me a car and still haven't resolved my issue. They tell me "not being satisfied with their customer service wasn't good enough reason to get a refund." So then I have to get my credit card company involved, I called Bank of America - in 10 minutes they refund my money. STAY AWAY FROM THRIFTY.

This company seems to lack proper training for its employees to handle all possible situations. When we had an issue arise, assistance was not forthcoming. Attempts at getting help locally was almost nonexistent. The call centers at the 1-800 numbers can’t provide assistance. We parked in front of a closed business where ‘tow’ signs were visible, but decided to park there to eat at the restaurant next door. The parking lot was adjoining, and full, and others were parked where we decided to. We made the mistake of assuming it would be OK when that other business wasn’t open. No phone call made for tow, no citation issued, but All Valley Impound apparently takes the initiative to tow where they have contracts. It was a fight to reclaim our personal belongings from the vehicle. This, according to local law enforcement is illegal, rental or not.

Thrifty Car Rental offered very little assistance. Stating it could take up to 10 days to get the car back through their Impound Department. No urgency for them, as they just pass the costs down to the customer. Issuing a replacement vehicle, at no charge, is policy, but staff on hand was not knowledgeable on how to do this. Uber has to be used for transportation until they ‘rented’ another car to us. Proof of ownership has to be provided for release of vehicle from Impound lot. Thrifty still claiming this could take time. No solid explanation for this. In the meantime, the clock keeps ticking & bill getting higher. This matter will be pursued legally.

We arrived in Baltimore at eleven pm and took the shuttle to the car rental. Every rental agency had lines except for Dollar and Thrifty so we went to Thrifty. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!!! First the clerk didn't speak hardly any English and couldn't converse with us regarding the rental agreement or the exaggerated charges. Convenience fee for What??? Anyway we got through the agreement and at no time did he attempt to tell us about the toll pass in the car. When we went to get the car the attendant was making out in a car with a man? We had to physically go to the car and get her to be told that we could pick out any car in the row and exit, as the keys were in the car. So we picked one and it had the toll pass. At no time did anyone tell us it would cost us an arm and a leg to use this convenience. You have to read the fine print to learn that it is not part of the sum being billed.

This very deceitful and it actually baits the driver into using it as all the wording leads you to believe it is part of the deal, nothing at all says it is additional except for a very small sentence deep down in the contract. All I can say is to beware of this company. It is a deceitful company that has to use trickery to make more money. I have rented many a car from other competitors and never had a communication problem or hidden fees as I experienced with Thrifty Car Rental!

My husband and I made the unfortunate mistake of reserving a car at the Thrifty in St. Louis, MO in August 2018. Upon arrival to Thrifty, the agent checking us in was completely unprofessional. As I was giving her basic information to pull up my rental, she stopped and decided to "refuse" to rent to us. Apparently, she did not like the way I gave her information. Mind you, I said nothing outside what was necessary to answer her questions. Perhaps she was expecting a song and dance with every response. All we needed was to get our car and leave.

At one point during check in, she asked if I would be adding insurance at which point I said no, to which she replied "are you adding insurance?" about 2-3 more times, each time with a worse attitude. My understanding was whether I was adding Thrifty insurance which I was not. I was planning on using our own insurance. Yet, she kept repeating that statement over and over again, instead of asking if I would be using my own insurance. Clearly, she lacked training in customer service or she was trying to force me to add their insurance instead of using my own.

After she "refused" to rent to us, which I am surprised that an agent could do much less without any basis, the agent next to her decided to help us. We were helped by the other agent and were out in less than 10 minutes. The only reason I didn't leave was because my husband and I, both lawyers, were on a business trip and were in a hurry to leave since we had to drive 2 hours from St. Louis. When we walked outside to get the car, the people behind us in line approached us and expressed confusion as to why that agent had "refused" our rental. We will not be renting with Thrifty again.

Worst rent a car center I have ever been to. We waited about 45 minutes for our "mid-sized SUV" then the lady sitting down handing out keys tells us if we want to wait for the "SUV" we would need to wait 30 more minutes. At the point I was exhausted and I just wanted to get out of there. We told her it's fine so we got a "standard car". I was concerned because we had prepaid for the gas since it was "cheaper" with them (Wrong. We found much cheaper gas within the 5 miles). We went back inside and told the front desk lady that we want to remove the charge for the prepaid gas since it was a different size car. She told us there was nothing she could do but the lady at the gate could help us. It took 15 more minutes for us to get the car, the weird thing was that people that got there after us were getting their cars before us (SUV, trucks & jeeps). The lady at the gate was really nice and made us laugh (she is a keeper).

Returning the car was a bit scary. We pulled up and waited for about 10 minutes but there wasn't anyone around (mind you it was about 8 pm and it was just us girls, two of us). I finally told her, "Let's park it here and go ask the front desk." Suddenly a guy ran up out of nowhere, I asked if it was fine where the car was and he said yes. He checked it out and everything was okay. We went to the front desk and asked when the shuttle was coming, he told us to wait and he should be coming. It took 15 minutes for him to show up (the driver was very nice and helpful). Honestly I came home and told my family members that I did not have a good experience. The sad part it was my first time renting a car from Thrifty and we do a lot of traveling so Never again!

Just thought folks should know about the bad and good things that I experienced picking up my rental care yesterday at Tampa airport. I booked my rental on Priceline and had a great rate of $108/week for a mini van. Went to pick up the car around 3:15 December 4. I gave the agent a print out of my reservation information with the total price on it. The agent seemed efficient and friendly, and I felt like I got through in quick time. (No hassle about refueling, insurance, etc. as I always decline these.) He handed me my contract and I happened to glance at the price - it was MORE THAN DOUBLE the price I had on my reservation. I pointed this out to him and he said he COULDN'T change it, only the people at the pick up station in the garage could. I questioned him on this because it seemed ridiculous and he told me that if I didn't like the rate on the contract I could just cancel the whole thing.

OK - Part 2. Went to the garage to pick up the car. Handed them my contract and reservation and they were a bit surprised at the difference. 1) Because the agent hadn't verified the rate between the reservation information and the contract, and 2) because he certainly could have fixed it. Come to find out, 1) agent was on commission, customer service in the garage were not. Interesting. 2) I was told that if I had not caught the "error" and had taken the car and left the garage, I would have "accepted" the new rate and there would have been no way to change it. Now I am thinking the agent altered the rate hoping I would not catch it so he would get a better commission, seeing as how the customer service folks couldn't figure out he got the rate SO very wrong. (Final cost of the rental went from about $330 to over $760.)

It took the wonderful customer service people about 10 minutes to change my rate to the correct one. So, you have one employee who should be fired for what he did, changing the rate and refusing to fix it, and two employees who should be commended for they were kind and patient in fixing his mistake. I really dread to think how many people just walk out and get in the car without looking at the contract, as this guy lines his pockets.

When we got there they tried to charge me 345 more dollars because I’m 24 for a underage fee and said they couldn’t put my brother as the main driver because it was already done in advance. Sooo all together this would have been 916.00 for a 2 week car rental. No way. The guy also asked for my flight ticket coming back and I asked what flight ticket. He said oh yeah to use our service you need a flight ticket. So I asked well why wasn’t this asked for when I was paying for my flight online. I could’ve found another rental company. He had no words and didn’t let me get the car that I PAID for.

I contacted Economy Bookings who I booked the flight through and they said I didn’t have all the proper documentation but none of this was asked for when I was booking my flight so this means no refund and I’m out of 500 something dollars. When Thrifty delivered the car, they charged immediately the rent and on top of that a security deposit of $750,00. According them this was just a blockade which would be released on the day that I return the car. Although it showed in my account that the money was taken out of my account. So, when I returned the car I expected that the blockade would be released the same day.

Now 7 days after the return and my money is still not released. I never had this experience before and I will never give my credit card to Thrifty again. I do not understand that other customers of Thrifty did not complain. BAC Costa Rica and her Credomatic department just try to make some more interest during this period of time. My advice to all of you is: Give Thrifty an envelope with cash security deposit and insist that they give you this envelope back when you return the car. Pura Vida.

We paid for the rent by American debit card. One of the benefits of American debit card is car rental insurance. The conditions of this insurance are much better than conditions, which Thrifty gives. Thus, by accepting Thrifty insurance we have received the worse conditions for a big price instead of better condition free. Is it sane? We both my wife and me told clearly to the cashier that we have insurance and do not need additional one, and he answered Yes. However, they do not trust us and believe him, despite of our two voices against his one. We are always liars and he is angel of truthfulness. I don't normally post reviews, but after the experience I had with Thrifty Car Rental last week, I feel compelled to warn everyone I know about them. Please do not rent a car from them if you can help it. Just pay the extra $30-40 it will cost for a rental somewhere else for the peace of mind that you won't need to deal with this company if you encounter any issues. They have zero customer service and zero integrity when it comes to doing the right thing ethically. In August we reserved a car online and paid for the rental in full ahead of time. I even signed up for their rewards program with the intention of using them again on a normal basis.

Last week we flew into our destination airport and went to the rental counter to get our car. We flew one way to our destination to pick up a new car we bought and were going to drive it back, so only had a one way flight into the airport. The customer service person (a term I use very loosely) at the rental counter asked us for our departing flight information and our credit card. We told them we were not flying out and presented our Debit/Visa card we paid for the rental with.

The agent advised us that we could not rent a car from them because we needed a major credit card. We travel frequently and rent cars from another rental company frequently and have never heard of such a thing. We don't normally use or carry credit cards and always use our Visa debit card for everything, and have never had any issues using it before.

The agent informed us this was a local policy of that airport. This was the first and only time we were told of this "policy". We had no warnings or advisement during the online rental process when we paid for the rental in full ahead of time. This woman did not care and told us she was refusing service to us. We tried telling her she was stranding us there. She just smiled and told us to "have a good day".

We tried to contact their customer service number thinking the girl at the rental counter was just a bad apple and they would do the right thing and just give us a refund since we paid in full ahead of time, we complied with our end of the agreement and was ready willing and able to fulfill our end of the rental. We figured that when they took into account that they refused to serve us based on a local, unwritten airport policy that we were never advised about before showing up, they would do the ethical thing of refunding our money. That was not the case.

We called the regular number you would use to make a reservation and you get right through to someone. But they tell you to call another number for refunds when you explain your situation. It took us almost a week to finally get ahold of someone at that number. After explaining to that person what happened, they advised us we would not get a refund because we violated terms of service within their 35 pages of fine print legal speak. They also advised my wife they were more than happy to keep our $125, even if it meant severing a relationship with us that would prove to earn them much more than that in the future. So, apparently this is their company motto and not just the one bad apple we thought we had at the rental counter. Please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere, it will save you time, money and frustration.

First off I have been renting for 15 years from different companies because of my business. It's basically always the same thing... I show up and have a reservation and they ask me if I want to upgrade or get any additional insurance and I decline and we move on with our lives. But not at this place.

The salesperson was so incredibly pushy and wouldn't take no for an answer. He kept pushing and insisting that I should upgrade for $100 to a diesel because it would save so much money, and that the insurance I had wasn't good enough and he wouldn't let me take the car unless I got their insurance, and I had to add my wife as a driver if we were gonna use her card. And he said I should prepay for the gas and return it almost empty because that would be cheaper.

I got so fed up that I finally just said give me whatever so I can get on with my trip. Needless to say I didn't save more than $20 by upgrading to a diesel, my wife never once drove it as I knew she wouldn't, it cost me more money to bring it back without filling it up than if I had just filled it up, and they ran $2500 on the credit card instead of just putting a hold on it. I called and emailed several times to let them set it right and reprimand the salesperson. But Hertz said I signed for it so basically tough luck. DO NOT EVER RENT FROM THRIFTY OR HERTZ.
