I rented a car including GPS at Thrifty's Moline, IL airport station. Upon arrival, I was informed that they had no GPS to give to me. I accepted that, but the price stayed the same. When I returned the car they insisted on me returning the GPS. It took a while, but then they agreed that all was ok. A few hours later they charged me 250 USD to my credit card and claim that I smoked in the car. In all my life I never touched a cigarette and the only one inside the car was me at all times. Complaining to their customer service, the company immediately reduced the charge by 50% while still insisting that I smoked in the car. The whole thing seems to be an easy way to rip off their customers.

The team at Thrifty at Kansas City International Airport is world class. My reservation is always ready when I arrive and the counter folks are the nicest people in the business. I travel extensively and Thrifty is by far my "go to" rental car provider.

My husband and I reserved a car in the airport in Puerto Rico. When we got there they told us they did not have any cars left and referred us to Hertz, who was more expensive. But the biggest complaint is that immediately after they told us that they did not have a car for us the 4 customers behind us that happened to be ** got a car. I did approached the clerk in the front desk (Jolian) to ask her how they had cars for them and not us and she was very nasty and rude.
After that I contacted the manager Jesus ** and it's been over a month and I am yet waiting to hear from him. I also contacted the customer relations when I got back to the mainland and after a few weeks their answer to my complaint was completely unrelated to the original complaint. I am in the midst of taking further action but meanwhile, be aware, they treat people depending on the color of their skin. A reservation means nothing to them. They do not care if you do not have a car once you get to a foreign land. DO NOT trust them with your rental reservation.

My husband and I recently rented a car from Thrifty from the Denver International Airport. Noticed a sign at check-in that said all CO tolls are automatically assessed via license plate number. We asked the desk agent how this works with a rental car and she advised that CO tolls don't take cash, but not to worry, all Thrifty vehicles have a toll pass and they simply pass the toll fee through to us. She didn't tell us anything about the $15 PER TOLL administration fee Thrifty would charge us on top of the toll fees. We received a bill from Thrifty for cost of the tolls $21.80 plus 5 administration fees totaling $75! Absolutely outrageous! When I called after receiving their notice their third party "rental fine" collection company advised that the admin fee was described in the fine print of the rental agreement and if we wanted to avoid it we should have contacted the Colorado Express Toll and driven there directly to purchase an Express Toll pass.

I prepaid a rental using a debit card. I arrived to pick up rental. The kiosk stated I needed to have a credit card. I stated because they took out money I assumed they would process it by holding 350 or 15% of my rental in my bank account. They showed me local rules although it should have been stated upon taking money off my account in the first place. The kiosk could not refund me. I called customer service, had communication issues several times. The last one from the (312) 843-5786. He stated they would not refund me due to not following the procedure and bringing a credit card. I stated because my debit card was accepted and that in the print on the website did not include California as one of those states. He said he did not care. And they had to hold the car. I am missing out on my mother's 60th bday due to this greedy company.

We would be lost without her, so thank you again for your services Pamela! You are the best! We highly recommend renting a car there!!! 10 Stars!??

So I recently rented a car through Thrifty, and went through Trivago or one of those sites to get the best deal. Like you'd expect, they give you a price per day and an estimated cost of the rental, which is a lot more than the per day charge, which is expected because of taxes, etc. I booked the car with my credit card, and got a confirmation from Thrifty. I picked up my rental at Thrifty, returned it to Thrifty, and got a bill from Thrifty which was in line with the price estimate from when I booked. I get the credit card bill, and lo and behold, I didn't rent a car from Thrifty after all. I apparently rented from CarTrawler, and Thrifty essentially charged me the same amount of the quoted rental for gas and taxes.
Now I've got a bill from CarTrawler and a bill from Thrifty, making my rental double the cost I expected. I was on the phone for 20 minutes with Thrifty, but "read the fine print" was pretty much the answer they gave. My wife just had a near identical experience with Dollar. AVOID DOLLAR, THRIFTY OR ANY OF THE RENTAL COMPANIES THAT DEAL THIS WAY.

Upon arrival I was not told they did not carry a jeep, given another car I had to figure out the controls. Error message of "maintenance needed" which they claimed "was normal" on dashboard. After an additional error message ("maintenance tire" appeared over the steering wheel I requested a fix of the problem. Told I had to sign form stating if they found damage to the tire, I would be responsible. I refused to sign and the rental car was taken back. The inconvenience was really intolerable as I was in town to celebrate my 50th high school reunion and spent most of my time worrying about this rental car.

This is the second time that I have rented with Thrifty. This time we were in Los Angeles, I have to give them props. I stood in line for only about two minutes before I was at the counter picking up the car. The only issue I had was once we returned the car and waiting on the bus to take us to the terminal. Two buses pulled up to take a large group of us to the terminal, but only one driver would allow us to board the bus. The other rude driver would not allow anyone on his bus, or provide an explanation. He then watched as we all crammed into the other bus before he left with his empty bus. This guy is sorry and should not be dealing with your customers.

Arrived at Phoenix Sky Harbour after an 11 hour flight. I had a confirmation email showing the deposit I had paid and the amount outstanding. I was told that this information was irrelevant and there was a further amount to pay, a very large amount. I was traveling alone and felt I was being completely taken advantage of, at one point there were 3 men all telling me different things, I was tired and upset. I booked the car through the Thrifty website but according to the desk they do not allow direct bookings and they are all through an agent and that is the reason for the discrepancy? I did not get the car I had requested. I feel they were totally dishonest. I would not recommend them. I would never use them again. Dreadful service.

No matter how much you search online you will never find me giving a review like this about any place. This people lied to us and swindled us out of $183. The woman claimed it was just a "security deposit". She pointed out how the receipt said it was an "estimated" cost which would only be incurred if we damaged the vehicle. I pushed back and told her we don't need it, she was nasty and disgusting back to me. Turns out that this was was not a "security deposit". It was some ** insurance. We told her multiple times we don't need insurance since our credit card covers car rentals. She tried to sell it to us but I guess she just went ahead and lied about it. Of course, their customer support team didn't give a single crap. She didn't apologize or try to remedy the situation. What a bunch of nasty people. As someone who runs customer support organizations I was absolutely blown away.

When my mother died, my husband and I wanted to make sure that my young adult, niece and nephew would be able to attend their grandmother's funeral in North Carolina - so we decided we would drive from Rhode Island to make sure that happened. I made a reservation with Thrifty - asking to pick the car up at 9 pm. We requested a car large enough for 4 and was told a midsize would be suitable.
The only car available when we arrived was completely unacceptable. Cramped, uncomfortable and small. When I asked about making other arrangements with Thrifty. I was told that because there was the one car still available in my category, there was nothing they could do. They pointed out that it was late and all the other cars had been taken. I pointed out that I had reserved for that hour AND there were 5 other car rental companies at the next counters and if there was nothing Thrifty could do, I would simply have to void our contract and rent from another company. They said there was nothing they WOULD do. This was after asking the women at the counter to call a manager.
I walked 10 steps to the Budget counter and got a car that was exactly what I had asked for from Thrifty - for the same price. Thrifty, you had other cars available and yet you made an awful situation worse. Thank goodness there are other companies that do what you do, far more efficiently and much better. I was at a loss - both literally and figuratively that evening - and facing a 9 hour drive. The inefficiency of those "helping" me could not have been worse.

WORST RENTAL CAR COMPANY EVER. Do not rent from them. While vacationing in Florida, I encountered unmanned toll booths where you toss change into a receptacle and I didn't happen to have any change. Too bad. Dollar loves this, though, because they'll try to charge your credit card hundreds of dollars after they pay about $3.00 in tolls. THEN, you don't discover this until your credit card refuses to pay these exorbitant fees. And it isn't until you go to rent another car about a year later that you learn you've been put on a 'Do Not Rent' list. Indefinitely. Don't rent from Dollar or Thrifty. In other words, don't use Hertz. Each rental car company is not an individual company. They are owned by Hertz. The best rental car experience I've had has consistently been Enterprise. They are also the only company that lets spouses both drive without charging a dumb, greedy fee for it.

Also one of the toll road only $0.60 they still charge $9.99 processing fee. During rental processing they did not mention anything like this or offer to rent transponder. Any of you still want to use this company I wish you good luck.

Horrible experience. Do not pre-pay for a car through Thrifty Car Rental. If you do not have a credit card and are using your debit card you could be denied a car. Why couldn’t they have let me know that before I travelled a thousand miles? I was stranded without transportation. Told me I had to go through CarTrawler to get my money back. Now they won’t give me all of my money back. It’s a rip-off.

Do not rent from Thrifty, Dollar or Hertz. They are all the same company and all terrible customer service policies designed to extract extra money from you and add on ridiculously high charges. I inadvertently forgot to refuel as I was in a hurry. This is not so unusual but when I asked the return person to allow me to go get duke they directed me to the manager. They will not allow you to leave once you arrive at the garage. They charge 9.99 per gallon for this oversight and you may be trapped with this if you are in a rush. All of their fuel policies are designed to add value for them and take more of your money for little to nothing in return.
They also want to charge me $80 when I extended my rental. I called to extremes this and avoid a charge and this charge was not on the ticket I was given but hidden away on a page I did not sign and these are charges for which I had not agreed to pay. Another attempt to take money from paying clients and abuse them to raise income for the greedy corporate overlords.
Then I went to talk to the manager. Truly incompetent guy so I started recording him on my phone. Not sure if they have a policy on this but the guy refused to say anything once he knew he was being recorded, not even the name of his manager. He has a smug and arrogant smile on his face but refuses to do his job and service his customer. They want to charge me $723 for a two-week rental. Adding over $200 in unauthorized charges. I called corporate customer service and they don't seem to care much either. Not sure if this will get resolved but beware of companies with such low ratings. There is a reason.

Reserved and prepaid online (to save money) at IAD. Counter personnel were friendly enough but wouldn't use the debit card I had paid with. Went through rental procedure adding insurance, which I knew would add some additional cost. Was given a quote 4 times higher than prepaid amount. Changed options and was given a new lower quote and guarantee that was all I would pay. Service was good and friendly at pickup and return and car was fine. Get to looking at paperwork and don't see credit for prepay and ended up paying well over 3 times initial online price. Contacted customer service about an overcharge and got 'sorry for any misunderstanding but we have the papers with your signature and no adjustment will be made'. Obviously I'll never rent from them again and I'll inform the many people I know that rent cars to steer clear of them.

When I called I was transferred to numerous rude representatives who were not helpful one bit and after an hour and 35 minutes I finally was able to talk to a supervisor who was not helpful at all and told me they would only reduce the fee to $45 and when charged it was actually $47.97. I went online to Thrifty.com to look at available cars for rent to take my family on vacation. I saw a nice van and it had a pay now option or pay later. If you paid now it was 100 or so dollars cheaper so I got my debit card out and paid the 652 it asked for and it showed that I would have to pay 182 at the time of pick up. So the day comes for pick up and I go in to rent my car and they tell me I cannot pick it up because I do not have a credit card and they recently changed their policy on accepting debit cards only if you have a flight scheduled.
I asked for my money back that I paid them and they gave me an 800 number. I called the 800 number and they said they could not return my money unless I could prove I had a flight scheduled. I asked to change the name to someone else who had a credit card and they said because I paid they could not change the name. Worst service ever, worst company ever, I don't care how much cheaper they are. I will never do business with these thieves again.

We rented a car with Thrifty. The car was dirty, but OK, but customer service was absolutely horrible. When we first got the car, we had to argue with an employee for an hour and a half, they kept begging us to spend more money. They also told us we could switch primary drivers when the driver we wanted arrived, which will be important later. Later on, we had another relative join us on our trip, and we wanted to make them primary driver. We went back to the rental, and tried making them primary driver instead of who we had who was not best suited for driving. They said it was against their policies, that they could only add him as second driver for more money. The person we worked with the day before said that we could replace the primary driver, the next day they said they could not.
The lady apologized because the person we worked with was still in training, and the correct policy says the primary driver cannot be replaced, a second driver can be added on the same car for double the money. She did not accommodate for us because of the original mistake like good customer service would do, she was greedy and just wanted more money for her business. She did not care about customers. She apologized but did not offer to replace the driver because of the misunderstanding or at least give us a discount, she argued with us until we were forced to add another driver for more money.
The person paying was furious, as now they had to pay double the money after they had been told they did not have to pay a fee to swap drivers. Not only that, but we have worked with Thrifty before, and they have let us switch primary drivers free of charge, breaking no policies. This Thrifty basically lied to us about policies and did not accommodate for THEIR OWN mistake, forcing us to pay double. When a company makes a mistake, they should be honest and accommodate for the customer. Thrifty did not care, and they basically lied to us and made excuses to squeeze all the money out of their pockets for THEIR mistake. Honestly, I don’t know what the truth was about their policy, but we still should not have paid that much money. We even threatened to get another car with another company, and she said the other companies were the same way. I don’t know who to trust. Either way, We will not be working with Thrifty again.

Rented the car from Rentalcars.com with complete insurance from their partner Rentalcover.com: "You have full protection. You will be offered other insurance at the rental desk. Don't pay twice!" But this did not help at all. To get the car I had to take their unrequired insurances (without this I would have lost the originally paid sum and was obliged to have a car). Together with fees etc. I was charged on top of the original rating of 320 $ another 350$! Instead of the SUV rented I got a 2-wheel-drive car for a rental car an old one. At least it worked. Upon returning the car I was asked to pay 390$ instead of the original 350$ ("we have forgotten something"). Thrifty in the DomRep: "You won't like it." After holidays I questioned Rentalcars.com. After an initial mail they closed their answer with "We are sorry to not be able to dispute any further this matter." Experience with Rentalcars.com: not a good one, neither.

Went to ORD to pick up Thrift rental car. Wait in line took 45 minutes, wait for the car to be driven up was 30 minutes. One lady told me I was lucky, she was there 2 hours as Thrifty double rented her car. Car itself was good with no problems. Declined PlatePass Tolling option thinking there would not be the PlatePass transponder in my car as the lady at the counter told me I could pay the tolls myself. I paid my tolls online and via coin all except 2 which PlatePass picked up for a total of $2.80 and $1.90 only because the PlatePass I thought was not there picked them up and prevented me from paying online.
Thrifty charged me $32.92 for these tolls. When I called the customer service agent to complain she was indifferent and so kindly offered me an option to pay $15.00 for each toll plus the toll. $32.92 would become $15 + $15+ $2.80 + $1.90 or $34.70. I asked her to just poke me in the eyes to make me feel better. Such great customer service. We were driving from Dubuque, Iowa on our way to Chicago O’Hare Airport when the engine started to have problems. We were approximately 109 miles away from Chicago. I called Thrifty’s customer service number and explained that an engine light was on and the car was overheating. It was suggested that I pull over and wait until the engine cools which we readily complied. I opened the hood of the car to check if there was any antifreeze which there wasn’t. Thrifty’s customer service stated that I should find a place that sold antifreeze and they would reimburse me. We were in a rural area near Stockton, IL where there are no gas stations or stores nearby which made purchasing antifreeze impossible. We drove a little further in pursuit of antifreeze when the engine stopped running completely. We pulled off on an exit and contacted Thrifty’s customer service to alert them that the car the engine had failed and we were stranded.
Our biggest concern was that we were going to miss our flight back to New York. When I inquired to Thrifty’s customer service people “what would happen if we missed our flight?” The response was beguiling and disappointing. I asked Thrifty’s customer service numerous times who would be responsible for paying the $200.00 per person ($400) fee for changing our flight if we missed our scheduled departure and each time Thrifty’s customer service claimed they were NOT responsible for this and we would have to go to the Thrifty at the Chicago O’Hare Airport for any resolution. Therefore, it was clear that Thrifty Car Rental was unwilling to assist us despite being rented a faulty vehicle that broke down in the middle of nowhere.
Thrifty customer service claimed they were going to send a tow truck to pick up the car and find an alternative for us to get to Chicago O’Hare Airport. Thrifty customer service decided to contact a Lyft car service for the ride to Chicago O’Hare Airport. We received a text message from Lyft that a car was ordered and patiently waited. However, it occurred to me that Lyft would not be able fulfill the order because of the logistics. I once again contacted Thrifty’s customer service to explain the dilemma. Thrifty customer service explained that I would just have to wait but, they would call Lyft and a local taxi service to procure a driver that would be willing to take myself and my son to Chicago O’Hare Airport or approximately 109 miles from our location.
I suggested that there was an Enterprise Rental Car company about 12 miles away and we could rent a car from them and Thrifty Car Rental could reimburse me however, Thrifty customer service nixed that idea and claimed that I would be personally responsible to the payment of a rental car from Enterprise despite the fact it was Thrifty’s car that broke down.
At this point, we were concerned that Thrifty would jeopardize us from missing our flight and I contacted Thrifty customer service yet again to find out the status of the Lyft or a taxi driver and they stated that they were unable to procure a ride for us from Lyft or a taxi to Chicago O’Hare Airport and claimed that the tow truck driver from Alber Towing & Recovery (tow ticket #134305) would be willing to drive us to the airport. Considering that Thrifty was unwilling to allow us to rent another car or unable to provide a ride, we had no other choice but to ride all the way to Chicago O’Hare Airport in a tow truck with no air conditioning or seatbelts. Frankly, I could care less if the truck didn’t have air conditioning but, not having a seatbelt for my 17 year old son is another matter. Not only is against the law, not to wear a seatbelt in the state of Illinois, it’s dangerous.
After loading into the tow truck we drive approximately an hour and twenty minutes to Chicago O’Hare Airport and thankfully arrive safely and made it on time for our flight. However, if we did not decide to take the tow truck option and put ourselves in danger by doing so, we would most likely have waited in perpetuity, missed our flight, forced to pay additional fees for changing our flight and forced to pay for the rental of another automobile and possible a hotel. All of which, Thrifty Rental Car was unwilling to assist or compensate in any way. After arriving home safely, I contacted Thrifty Rental Car because they authorized another charge on my credit card because they claimed the car was not turned in.
In sum, Thrifty’s customer service was lackluster and hapless at best. They were unwilling to answer simple questions such as “who would be responsible for the additional fees for changing our flight times due to their automobile breaking down?” We had no choice but to ride 109 miles in a tow truck as Thrifty Car Rental was unable to provide a viable alternative solution such as rent another car from Enterprise Rental Car. (Only because they would not pay.) However, Thrifty Car Rental was willing to place myself and my son in danger by riding in a tow truck without a seatbelt. (We alerted Thrifty of the aforementioned.) In the end, Thrifty Rental Car took no responsibility and was little to no help. I would be remiss to say that their customer service was one of the worst rental car experiences ever. In the future I will do my best to avoid Thrifty Rental Car and their parent company Hertz.

They even acknowledged that they are the only company that does not accept other insurance policies.
We had a similar experience with Dollar (which I believe is tied to Thrifty) in Las Vegas a few years ago. We decided to not go ahead with the rental in Frankfurt and went to Budget instead. The whole experience has left a sour taste in my mouth, in my opinion, Thrifty/Dollar are not transparent with their pricing and feel that their entire goal is to squeeze as much money out of their customers as they can. Needless to say, I will never rent through these companies again and will not recommend them to anyone.

Where do I start? I paid 118.00 UPFRONT for car and taxes. Then when I picked up the rental I agreed to the prepay fuel charge (fine no issue there) but I did not agree to any extra rental insurance as we were going to barely be driving it. The guy behind the counter rushed us through and confirmed NO RENTAL insurance. GUESS WHAT!?!! YEP we were charged an extra $90 for rental insurance we did not agree to. Yes we signed the little screen in front of the counter to confirm NO RENTAL insurance but because it was only a signature line, we did not know we were signing for insurance.
The agent put it on without our knowledge and when I called the customer service they will not do anything about it. BEWARE and go elsewhere. I have never had issues with any other rental company. For what I paid for a midsize, I paid less for a Mustang convertible elsewhere. HORRIBLE customer service! OVERCHARGED! It also took me three calls to just get an email of my bill. They never even gave me one when I returned the car as they said they would. It was at an airport in Houston.

I returned my rental to FLL airport. The fuel gauge says full. They tell me the tank is not full and charge me $15.48 for what they later declared to be 7/8ths of a gallon. I told her it was unfair but I wasn’t upset with her personally, to which she declared “I don’t care. I do “this” every day, day in, day out.” That comment drove me to the manager in the booth. When I explained what occurred, one employee (obviously a new one) said “your tank is full.” However, when he walked back to “check”, the woman who checked me in told him to tell me it’s not full. In fact, he came back and said “she told me to tell you that your tank is not full.” Huh? He disavowed his own employer.
The supervisor knew the tank was full (I took a photo of the gauge and they were none too pleased). He raised his eyebrows when he saw my photo (admission). He then snidely told me after I asked for a waiver, “we give you the tank full, you return it full” (deflection). And finally, when he thought I had walked away, he laughed at me (derision). I walked back to let him know I heard and saw him laughing at me, and he lied and said he was smiling (denial).
To all of you out there, but especially to my fellow women, don’t give these people a penny of your hard-earned money. They need to learn that women hate being mocked and laughed at. Frankly, the cost of the charge is minuscule in the scheme of things, but I wasn’t letting it go and I told them, "I am posting my experience with you online and on social media." So, I took the charge just so I could write a bad review telling you to stay away from these people. This is post #2, and I am just warming up. Bye Thrifty. Bye.

When we arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica, the car cost us $545.64 ($120 of that was for a wifi stick that did not work so well to get GPS navigation)! They refused to honor our reservation price and also made us pay an overpriced cost for car insurance even though we were already covered by our credit card as well as our insurance company back home. We were completely stuck with the car. I voiced my complaints on Thrifty's customer service/complaint email when we returned to the US, but they told me they had no jurisdiction over Thrifty in Costa Rica - even though they publish the prices on their website. I was told we could pick up the car at the airport, however this was the first red flag. We were shuttled to a Thrifty pickup. The price of the daily rental had changed radically from $16.99 per day to 29.99 per day and this did not include insurance. I did not need most of the insurance as I am covered by my credit card. I was told this did not apply and the insurance brought the cost of the car to $50 plus per day. I was asked for a $3,000 deposit to be put on my credit card, I refused and the deposit was reduced to $300. This took one and a half hours to negotiate. Awful experience, I would never rent from them again, complete bait and switch.

DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY!!! I went to Atlanta this past weekend and had already purchased a rental car through Holiday Cars which took me to Thrifty Car Rental for my vehicle. I had to pay full price up front through Holiday Cars. Go to the desk at the Thrifty cars to pick up my car. Was told to I needed to have a card on file for Thrifty for any possible incidentals that may occur. Then I was asked as a government employee discount I was eligible for an upgrade to a high rated car at no charge and at a lower fee. So now 5 days later after having a hold on my card, this morning I check to see if the hold is off and lo and behold Thrifty has charged me another full price car rental for my upgraded car plus my original price (through Holiday Cars). After talking with customer service and them telling me I signed a contract for the car that they can charge me the price for the upgraded car as well and they did!!!
After going through the contract with billing. I was told I signed up for roadside service along with loss and damage. Which I denied all extra charges cause my insurance will cover any damage but the attendant charged me anyways extra add-ons. Told the counter attendant I needed no extra that the "free complimentary" upgrade was good enough. So get the vehicle and heading out of the rental car center and realize the car has 21 miles til empty on fuel. Call back to Thrifty customer care, was told they were sorry and I could take the car back the same level but may be charged the $9.99 a gal for fuel. My account was suppose to be noted for low fuel and never was. Luckily I was not charged for fuel. But the car was on empty which is pathetic!!!
So in the end I paid full price ($221 for 2 days) from Holiday Cars, and Thrifty charged me $25 less than original full price they were going to charge (original $168, now $143). Total for a 2 day car rental $364. Knowing I had already rented the car Thrifty went ahead and charged me anyways. Avoid Thrifty!!! And to top it off. My credit union has called now saying Atlanta is hot spot for cars theft and fraud. Well Thrifty was the only place I used my debit card, everywhere else was on credit card. And now have suspicious activity on my debit card trying to be used in foreign countries and other places in the US I was not at. Watch your cards and do not use Thrifty!!!

After booking the car in August 2017 for a pick up date of April 1, 2018 we had went to the South Beach location only to find out it had moved. After finally locating the new location, the location was closed and we were unable to obtain our car. We contacted Thrifty on a 30 minute international call, where they also were unaware that the South Beach location was not open and we were told that we could get a car from the airport. This was a 30-40 $ taxi fare in order to pick up a car when I asked if they were going to assist with this cost the answer was no. After discussing our options with Thrifty‘s I agreed to pick up a car on the following day at the Miami location.
Thrifty‘s customer service gave me three options for the car rental of cars available at that location and said that the Jeep Grand Cherokee we wanted would be there. The next morning we walked to the South Beach location to pick up your vehicle and waited 20 minutes until a customer service representative was available. Once we sat down to pick up the car which is supposed to be at this location, the customer service lady informed us that our car is going to be Kia. After explaining that we talk to corporate customer service and the Grand Cherokee was supposed to be at this location, she stated that they have not had a Grand Cherokee in four years.
Trying to explain that we’ve talked to corporate office regarding this vehicle she kept stating that it was a equal vehicle and that is all we could rent. We continued to discuss this when she got mad at us and told my wife to shut up or she wouldn’t rent us a car. My wife in shock that this customer service lady told her to shut up in front of a whole office full of potential customers did stop talking. We continued with the rental process and were told to go outside for 10 minutes while they got the car ready for us. After 10 minutes we went back in to get the car for the lady informed as she no longer had any cars available for us and to leave. Again trying to contact Thrifty corporate office after this, it became a series of holds and transfers with no resolution. At this point I just hung up and decided to rent from different rental car company.

The website said the car we rented can fit 2 large luggage and 2 small luggage in the boot. That was very misleading. We could only fit 1 large and 1 small luggage. We had to queue about 30-40 minutes to get the car keys at the desk at Sydney Kingsford Airport and when it was finally our turn, the desk staff was quite rude. The cars' A/C wasn't working well. Unfortunately the weather was quite hot while we were there. So we were sweating away in the car. We called them on 28 April 2018 and the staff said they will send an email to somewhere and call us back. We didn't get any call back so we called them again the next day and again they said they will send another email.
I don't understand how an email in an inbox can help us in that situation. So we asked if it was possible to get a replacement car and they said we will have to check directly with the airport where we got the car and gave us the number for that. We tried calling that number with no response. So basically, they pretty much ignored the fact that their cars' A/C was faulty and did nothing to try and replace the car we had. We had a lousy experience with Thrifty and we will never hire from them again. They may be the cheapest but they will do absolutely nothing if you have any issues with your hired car.

When I returned my rental vehicle at Orlando MCO Airport on Friday, March 30th, 2018 I was extremely disgusted with the customer service. After returning the SUV rental to Terminal B (approx 5 PM), I walked to the departure terminal. Before I got to the terminal I realized I had left my Computer bag in the car. I quickly returned to the rental kiosk, which was no more than 15 minutes after I returned the vehicle. I explained to the lady assistant the situation. I told her I had left my Computer Bag in the vehicle and I was in desperate need to get it back because besides my computer, it contained a few hundred dollars cash, my wife's medication which she has to take twice a day for a serious medical problem and our passports. I explained without the passports we could not get on our flight back to Canada.
She wrote down a website and said, "When you get to a computer go online and fill in the info and if the bag shows up it will be returned." The kiosk attendant did not speak good English but I tried to explain that I needed my passports to get on the flight. She absolutely had no desire to help. If she worked for me I would have her for about 2 minutes or for the length of time it took me to write out her termination slip. Fortunately a young gentleman working with Thrifty came in the Kiosk and I explained my situation to him. I believe he was already finished his shift. He said, "I will try and find it for you." He was gone approx 15 minutes and he came back with my bag. His first name was Josh. I did not get his last name. But I would like to give him a special thanks. He certainly would be the type of person you would want working for you.
In addition to this my son came in for 8 days and I put him on as a second driver. I had the car rented for 25 days. When we went back after 8 days to take the second driver off they said, "No you have to pay the second driver rate until the car is returned." We finally worked out an agreement after talking to the supervisor. When I did return the car at the end of the rental period I wanted to pay the remainder of what I owed and they said, "No you must wait and we will send it by email." I am just waiting to see if they try and scam me for more than I owe.

My family and I recently went on a vacation to Oahu, Hawaii. Prior to our vacation I had booked online with Thrifty Car Rentals, Full-Size Sport Utility Vehicle (unlimited mileage) - pick up February 20, 2018 12:00 pm and drop off March 1, 2018 12:00 pm at the Honolulu International Airport. This reservation also included 1 child seat, 1 booster seat and 1 GPS system. The reservation confirmation statement showed it would be $589.77 USD upon pick up (including all taxes and fees). Upon pick up Thrifty advised us that our total amount due was now $2841 USD. This is not the amount that was provided to us on the reservation and frankly I am not sure who would be willing to pay this OUTSTANDING amount they were asking for.
I first contacted the booking number on our reservation email but no one was able to provide me with an explanation as to why these amounts were so different. We next decided to speak with the manager at Thrifty in the Honolulu airport. He agreed that this amount was rather high but he too could not provide a detailed explanation as to why. After speak with the manager for quite some time he provided us with a new price of $800 USD, before taxes or insurance and we would need to have a Air Miles card to receive this price (which we do not have). You can imagine our frustration. So we decided that it might be best to go with another company within the same airport since Thrifty would not honor the original price.
Unfortunately, after checking all other car rental companies in the airport it was determined that there were no other vehicles available for us to rent. Now here myself and my husband are stranded at the Honolulu Airport with our son who is only 1 years old along with our brother and sister-in-law and their 2 children (whom we were to share the rental vehicle with). The rental property we had booked was over an hour away from the Airport so we knew taking a taxi would not be an option. Our only option was to take the public transportation bus to the other side of the island which took about 2.5 hours, which included multiple transfers and stops (if it were not for the friendly locals I am sure we would have ended up lost). Now I am sure you can imagine how much fun that was with a toddler and 2 other children. Luckily we were able to book another vehicle through a different company a few days later and enjoy the remainder of our vacation.

It is unclear from the notice if the 'administration fees' were charged by Thrifty or the State of Florida, but in either case, the fees are excessive and border on fraud. No warnings were issued on the tollway, just that toll fees would be billed. Given the large number of people visiting the Orlando area, this should be a warning to all visitors.

I travel a lot and normally use another car rental company, which I will never stray from again. I took my son to San Antonio Texas for a mini vacation. When I arrived at Thrifty to pick up my "luxury" vehicle, it was not what I was told it would be. Size of a vehicle is very important to me due to my son's height. They instantly tried charging me more for a full size SUV. That was the start of the nightmare. I did not want the upgrade and so had no choice but to settle for a 4 door sedan. I only drove 18 miles the entire time, 9 to the hotel and 9 miles back. The car was parked at the hotel the rest of the time.
When I returned the vehicle at the airport, the Thrifty representative accused me of smoking in the car, which I do not smoke, and insisted that I did. It was busy that day at the airport and I was not going to be held up for my flight home. After 5 minutes of me debating whether I smoke or not to this young cocky individual with a smug look on his face, I got a little loud and asked him if he was purposely trying to upcharge me with these false accusations. His colleague came over and got into the car and told me that everything was fine so I then signed off. The original representative that was dealing with me actually glared at me the whole time. I have never had a more horrible rental experience. If you are deciding between rental companies, don't even give Thrifty Car Rental a second glance. I made my reservation online; the website stated that the price of my reservation included all taxes and fees. When I arrived at the car pick-up location, the customer service representative informed me that they didn't have the car that I requested. We had to wait for thirty minutes while he made some calls and eventually arranged for us to have a different size vehicle. I had to negotiate with him to ensure that I wouldn't be charged for this change. Then, when I was finalizing my reservation at the check-out counter, I was asked to sign a receipt for an amount that was three times the amount of what my reservation stated. When I asked about this, the customer service representative pointed to some very fine print on a document that said Thrifty charges each driver $30-$40/day for insurance.
This was despite the collision damage insurance I'd purchased online when making my reservation. He also told me that there were some fees for adding an extra driver. Nonetheless, the math simply didn't add up. My reservation was initially for $264. The bill they wanted me to pay was $667. This included a massive tax/fee that was unspecified. I complained, and another customer service representative cut the mysterious insurance charge in half, so that we ended up paying $348 for the rental. Still, I ended up paying $100 more than I expected. When I returned the vehicle four days later, the customer rep there handed me a bill for $148, apparently for "extra mileage." We asked to see the photos of the car's odometer ratings and discovered that they had forged the mileage on the receipt to include a larger amount.
When I told the customer rep that I refused to pay anything as this was deliberate deception, she made a few calls and then tersely said that there was nothing she could do and that their office would be billing me in the States via mail. In addition to all of this, my credit card company called me with a fraud alert for my account. Apparently Thrifty Car Rental had placed multiple charges on my card: one for $1500, another for $500, and another for $667. Today, two new charges appeared for $87 and $115. Thrifty never informed me of these charges and they are entirely unauthorized. I have reported fraud to my credit card company accordingly. I will never be renting from Thrifty Car Rental in the future. This experience was full of deception, hidden fees, and the worst customer service from the beginning. I am appalled that this company is still in existence.

We were charged $65 additional for the second driver which was not mentioned. I have never been charged for a second driver. When we complained, we were told we should have read the contract. We had already waited in line for 30 minutes before being helped at the counter. Will never, never rent from Thrifty again. With all the complaints about this company I cannot believe they are still in business.

We rented a van in LA. Bought the express package only to be charged on two separate issues for using the express lanes on the freeway. When we called Thrifty we were told that it did not cover those highways on which we received the tickets. We only traveled within the LA area and were never told that certain highways were not covered. Two months later we received another notice for a parking violation! We have no idea what that is all about and feel Thrifty uses these fines to increase their profits. We have no proof and cannot remember where exactly we parked two months ago that would have caused this violation. Never will we use this company again.

Thrifty Car Rental is pushing their daily toll pass as a convenience pass in the city but they failed to tell me about “administrative fees” if I didn’t purchase the daily pass. I questioned the agent about the daily pass cost since I was only driving thru and passing 2 tolls and I found it to be extremely expensive vs. just paying for tolls. I wasn’t told about “administrative fees” even though I wanted to confirm if there was any additional fees when using the pass in the vehicle.
I received notice of $32.97 due for tolls. I was told that since I didn’t buy the daily pass they are charging administrative fees on top of the $9.00 in toll fees. I sent them a check for $9.00 but they are still trying to collect on full amount. Thrifty is trying fraudulently to sell their daily pass without disclosing additional fee information to consumer at the counter. I will file complaints with BBB, IL state consumer affairs office and dispute charge with my CC company. I will never use Thrifty or its affiliates again due to their fraudulent business practices.

I was charged a ton of money for a transponder I declined all because when I entered the vehicle I did not make sure it was turned off. I also was charged for the tolls I drove thru and paid cash for because it was unknowingly turned on. Whoever gets in a rental and checks to see if transponder is turned off??!! Not me! Ever! I usually make sure there’s no damage to the rental, make sure there’s a full tank of gas and I leave. They’re gonna put in a request to pay for ONLY half of my bill!! That seems unethical and just unfair. I know I’m not the only person this has happened to! I will forever be loyal to Enterprise rental! They truly are the best and know how to deliver great customer service and they always make sure I’m happy!

This is a bait and switch tactic and Thrifty Car Rental company can't be trusted. I then called their main number 800-847-4389 and they knew nothing of the promotion nor do they deal with discounts I was told. They gave me another number 312-843-5786 and they took 10 minutes to research discount offer and said it was only for some locations. We have been renting cars for more than 30 years. Since we have our own insurance we have never purchased the extra insurance. We reserved the car through AAA and on the reservation, it clearly states we do not want the insurance. Without letting us know, they charged us for the insurance. We have called Thrifty several times to get the charge taken off, but they will only give us a small portion back. The cost of the insurance was $142.45. I was told they would give me $49.89 back and then gave me another number where I could call to see if I could get a full refund. When I called the number provided, I was transferred back to the original number.
At this point, I was told I had already agreed to the $49.89 so no further refund would be given. I believe it is illegal to add this extra charge without informing the renter. It's a scam! I agree that my husband should have looked at the receipt and should have noticed the extra charge, but he never thought that they would add an extra unwanted charge to the bill. We would like a full refund of the insurance charge which was never authorized.

I actually posted this on my FB account which is something I would not normally do, however, I am making an exception with Thrifty Car Rental! Keep in mind, my husband, Frank, has been a Blue Chip member for 10-15 years and we have never had an issue. Frank and I were in San Diego this past June and rented a car. Upon return, the person who checked us in, said that there was a chip in the windshield. Normally, we look a car over for dents, scratches, etc. before we check out and have an agent make a note. However, this small of a defect would be hard to catch! It's not much bigger than the head of a pin, if that!
We sent pics to Thrifty and explained that we had not caused this damage and assumed it would be taken care of, especially since we are long time customers with an excellent track record. Their response was we signed a paper accepting responsibility. We were in a hurry, trying to catch a flight, so didn't take the time to read what we were signing, unfortunately. We will not pay for damage, because the last agent checking in this car missed this spec of damage. Terrible customer service.

I would rather walk than rent from this company, ever again. I don't care if you gave me a car and title for free, I would never go back. We fly 1,000 miles away from home to do a shopping trip and watch the Rocket take-off, we were going to have the car for a total of 7.5 hours. We land in Orlando and get to the ticket counter, the guy asked for the driver's license and credit card, the usual spill, well then I am told that my rental could not be fulfilled because my credit card name does not match my driver's license. It's a business card you **. DUH!
But it doesn't end there, after me being told I can't rent a car, I walk, because I'm not going to sit there and be embarrassed because my card "can't be taken", word of advice. If someone has on a $3,000 backpack and $800 belt and $1200 shoes, you give them the ** car without questions, those are the customers you are supposed to satisfy, not make sure they never return. THE BEST PART, I get to Louis Vuitton in the Meliana "whatever it's spelled" mall here in Florida, to find out my card has been declined, so I therefore call my credit card company to find out that Thrifty has put a $300 hold on my credit card when I DON'T EVEN HAVE A RENTAL, so that caused my card to get frozen, but thankfully I unfroze it immediately.
So Thrifty, tell me why I was charged over $300 for a car that I have never drove, or even had the keys to. Also, I wouldn't recommend your customer service reps hanging up on me again, because I have her name and employee number, and there is a handwritten letter being dropped off in the mailbox in the morning, absolutely a disgrace of a company, and I thought nothing could get worse than McDonald's or Taco Bell, well here it is.

I rented a car in Barbados in August during Carifesta 2017. They charged me for a 1/4 tank of gas at pick-up and told me to return the car empty. It is a dirty, dishonest rip off trick. The tank should have been full or 1/4 tank (in this case) to be returned as was received at no additional cost. It is dishonesty because Thrifty is capitalizing on my concern/fear of a stalled car therefore, to avoid that I would always bring it up to the safe level at Thrifty's advantage.
Furthermore, with Thrifty's 1/4 tank policy is therein implied that I must keep driving aimlessly in an attempt to utilize all of the petrol which I had already paid for. That by itself is so wrong and unfair. Thrifty is making me pay for petrol that I may not need or use, in effect stealing money from my pocket in a very covert, sneaky way.
The trick is even more sugar coated because the total estimated price for the rental is lower than their competitors, but when you go to pick up the car the cost for the 1/4 tank is included. Typical bait and switch. Never rent from Thrifty again. I returned to Barbados 4 weeks later and rented from Hertz, they are excellent and their cars are of better quality.

I tried to explain that I don't like large vehicles and didn't reserve one. You have to go back in to the rental desk to return but nobody looks the car over.
The car was horrible. It was a Hyundai Accent. It was cleaned and sprayed with some scent to mask the smoke smell in the car. The grill on the front was hanging off (had to call that in so I did not get blamed). The car sits very low and scrapes on pretty much everything. The brakes squeal. The best part was when I went to turn on the A/C. I tried everything and I could not get cool area. It was just hot air blowing out at me. I was doing sales calls in a suit and sweating profusely. I had chocolates as giveaways that melted. It was ridiculous to say the least.
When I returned the car, I was not given any compassion regarding the situation. I could not find where to return the car as there is no signs and not direction on what to do. I finally called the desk. I was hung up on the first time and then finally got someone. I explained the whole situation and they put me on hold. Another person picked up and said, “Are you waiting for luggage?” I said no and that I spend 10-12 min explaining to the previous person. At this point, I just want to return the car and get out of there. I am then told that I need to trudge all my bags into the desk as they have no one out in the garage to return the vehicles to. I don't even get so much as a “I am sorry for the problems you experienced”. On January 28th 2017 I arrived at the Thrifty Car Rental at Las Vegas McCarran Int`l Airport. During the process the agent asked what insurance I wanted and I clearly stated that I was declining all insurance. I do this in all rental car situations since my VISA card covers the CWR and my Canada Liability Insurance is good both in Canada and the United States. He argued that my liability insurance was not good in the United States. I presented my liability certificate and in his presence called my insurance company to get clarification. It was made clear that the liability coverage was valid in the United States and was referred to a website for a complete write-up. I again insisted that I did not want any insurance on the rental vehicle.
I was then instructed to sign a digital pad, which I assumed was just to show I was accepting the vehicle. I was never told what I was signing for on the digital pad. This pad showed no amount or other information. No documents or contracts were reviewed with me prior to me signing this screen. At the end of the transaction the agent handed over a closed booklet and pointed to where I would pick-up the car.
On my return on 25 February 2017 the vehicle was checked over and I was handed a receipt stating that I owed $653.81 US for liability insurance. I was shocked at this charge for insurance which I had declined. I disagreed with the attendant and was directed to the Thrifty counter at the Airport There I spoke to an attendant who then proceeded to have me meet with the Manager. I met with Damion Williams, the Manager and I explained what had transpired on the day that I rented the car. After some discussion he attempted to reverse the charge on my credit card. However, he stated he was limited to a credit of $200.00 US. He provided the toll-Free number for Thrifty Corporate offices. In addition he supposedly noted his actions on my file on the computer so that Corporate would have all info on file when I called.
I called Corporate on Monday morning 27 February, talked to Anika. She saw what was on the file from the Manager at Las Vegas, and after a few minutes stated that my card would be credited within 3-5 days. This call was recorded. By 7 March 2017 nothing had transpired on my RBC account so I again called Thrifty Corporate and again spoke to Anika. She stated that the file was being reviewed by her Supervisor and the request would be resolved within 24-48 hours. I requested to be advised within that time frame through a call from her or the supervisor. She stated that would happen. This call was also recorded
When nothing was heard from Thrifty I contacted my bank and filed a dispute. After several inter actions with my bank I was advised that they had received the money back from Thrifty's bank. This should have been a clear indication to Thrifty that there was an issue with the charge if their own bank would not support them. Now Thrifty is billing me directly for the charges. I have no intent on paying anything to Thrifty and if they continue to harass me with future bills I will attempt to take some legal action against them.
It appears to me that this company is using the digital signature system to scam customers into paying for additional products that they never agreed to, or at least the counter agents have figured out that this system makes it easy to steal money from customers. By signing a digital pad that does not show an amount or what it is that you are signing for mounts to fraud or at minimum a lack of honesty and integrity on the part of the company and their employees. After this occurred I checked with the Better Business Bureau in the United States and there are numerous complaints to them on this specific topic. It appears that theyare doing this nationwide. Allowing Thrifty to get away with conducting business in this manner needs to be investigated and stopped.

Upon returning and three months later, we were charged on our credit card for $2700 [without our approval] of additional charges for mileage for taking the vehicle outside the accepted range during our 12-day trip; they billed a per mile rate and not the contractual rate. After reviewing the details we found that sure enough, the contract language was changed sometime since the last rental to exclude travelling to TX from the airport in northeast Tennessee where we picked it up. Next, we made a written explanation and appeal directly to Thrifty and even mentioned that their counter employee during pick up that we were going to Texas and he said 'have a nice trip'. Terrible experience. Reserved a car with my husband as driver. When we went to pick up the car I wanted to pay for it with my credit card. The clerk advised me it's policy that the name on the card has to be the primary driver on the account. We go through all the steps to complete transaction, the sales points to up sell, he was very short and rude and seemed annoyed with us not wanting each of the extra options - key fob, pay for gas thru them, insurance, roadside assistance. I have full coverage insurance, as well as the VISA I was paying with provides rental insurance coverage, which is specifically why I used this card, and we already have roadside assistance coverage. I gave my insurance, my credit card, my license and signed for the transaction.
Once I was handed the contract it was still in my husband's name, so I questioned this and asked him why did this say my husband's name when I am the primary driver? He said he could not change the name on the reservation, but I am the primary driver in the account and I am the only one to drive the car. I trusted this information. The next day a shuttle driver hit my rental car while stopped at a stop sign. The next day I went back into Lihue Thrifty to report the accident. I was informed my husband was the only one listed as a driver on the car. I asked to speak to a Manager Mike ** and explained the situation to him. He verified the name on my credit card matched the card used to pay for the car and said, in fact, he could have changed the name and should have, but he probably didn't know how to do it because he was new.
Mike ** acknowledged it was a mistake and fixed the contract to be in my name, added my husband as an additional driver for free and even gave us $100 credit. He said he made a note in the account that I was the primary driver and I went on my way. The problem that I didn't realize at the time when the Manager fixed the contract, he created a new one that started on that day I came to report not for the 2 days prior, he just closed those out. I begin dealing with claims who initially start calling asking for my husband and I explain to them I am the primary driver. This is a mistake. They make the notes in the account I am authorized to drive, but say they cannot change contract and deal with that with customer service at Thrifty/Hertz/Dollar. So now claims is reporting this to the person's insurance who hit me and I am waiting to see what happens. Hopefully there will be no problem.
If there is I will go thru my insurance company because I have full coverage with a $500 deductible that I know Visa will cover so again no problem. I notify Visa of a potential claim, in case, the other person's insurance does not take care of this and they need all the paperwork including the initial contract. They inform me the name on the card and contract need to match on the date of the accident. Since the manager closed it, but and left it incorrect in my husband's name I do not have this to provide them. I begin contacting Thrifty/Hertz 800-334-1705 to explain that a mistake was made by a worker we rented our car from and that he did not give us the correct contract and also advised us invalid information that I need corrected to provide Visa, asking them to fix this or give me written letter stating I am the primary driver.
The first Manager I spoke to Terry #** assured me the contract was in my name and I asked him for a copy of it and he emailed me a receipt still in my husband's name, but with my name as the city on the address. I call back again and speak to Michael #**. He was just down right terrible customer service. I explained the situation. He says nope. They can't help me. I told him if a contract is in my husband's name, yet I give my card, license, and sign all the forms wouldn't that be an invalid contract then? He went on to accuse me of fraud by signing what the guy gave me when I rented the car, even though, I was told by the employee I needed to sign it. I still have yet to obtain the corrected contract. ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.

Cartrawler has been unwilling to refund the money and each contact with them results in someone telling me the person I need to speak with has left for the day. Hertz (the Thrifty parent company) says I need to deal with Cartrawler because I made the reservation with them and not Thrifty, even though it was made on Thrifty.com. Thrifty and Hertz also will not recognize the reservation because the confirmation number is international (Cartrawler is offshore) and not a U.S. confirmation number.

I had arranged car rental through a broker and prepaid for all the services that I required. When I collected the vehicle at no point were any additional insurances or fees discussed, and I was handed a document headed "incomplete RR" with estimated fees of $268.44. When I asked the clerk what these were for I was told not to worry, and that there were no additional fees to pay.
When I got back to the UK a charge had been made to my credit card of this amount and when I questioned this I was told that the insurances had been fully explained to me and that I was not entitled to any refund. I have been lied to and ripped off by Thrifty, and to cap it all when I collected the car it had not been washed and still contained the previous owners trash in the glove box and behind the Sun visor. I will never use Thrifty again, and recommend that all readers avoid these cowboys.

NO STARS... EXTRA EXTRA FEES, NEVER USE THIS COMPANY!!! Reserved a car at Thrifty at DFW Airport, Rental quoted at $65 for 3 days. Just a bit cheaper than other Companies. At time of Rental I was informed that it was REQUIRED to BUY THRIFTY INSURANCE and the cheapest was $20 a day added to my rental fee.... THEN TOLL CHARGES were $14 a day and if I didn't buy that toll package it was going to be $15 toll violation fee plus the toll everytime a toll was charged.... That alone was over $100 additional fee... I said that was outrageous over $165 for a 3 day rental... I didn't rent from them.
The agent said I could call Thrifty to get a refund... Multiple phone calls later and an email complaint it's like trying to pull teeth to get the booking reservation of $28 back from Thrifty... It's nearly impossible... So they still get money for false advertising because they say that the required insurance charge is in their Rental conditions... PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.... NEVER RENT FROM THEM!!! Finally went to Enterprise and was out the door with an upgrade, no additional required fees for $72... BOOM LOVE ENTERPRISE... Toll charges were only $4.99 a day (if you used the toll road) plus whatever toll charges you had. That charge is much more reasonable.

In April I flew into Seattle for a two day trip. Thrifty seemed unusually busy, not enough staff. When I finally reached the counter with my reservation, I was pounded for additional coverage to DOUBLE the cost of the rental. I declined the coverage. The rental experience was fine enough on return. Nevertheless, I sure blew it on anticipating TOLL FEES in town. I had exactly one, (it's the principle though) and this week received a notice of an "ADMINISTRATIVE FEE", being charges. Oh, of course I am legally responsible indicated the document. They also noted I have "10 days to pay" but I just received the bill! (Three days to go!). Logging into the Rental FINE site, I attempted to pay online, but the site links do not work. What an operation! Beware of the Toll areas and these hidden charges folks!

Third when you call them to find out why they're rude and nasty. Fourth the car I rented kept losing air in the tire. As previous reviews have stated, do yourself a favor and don't rent from Thrifty. They may seem like a deal, but they have a lot of hidden charges they don't tell you about until the charges show up on your credit card. They claim they tell you about it in the large print out materials you receive, but they should tell you what to watch for at the counter. Make sure you tell them you do not want them to auto-fill the vehicle when your return it. If you don't tell them you DO NOT want the auto-fill it will show up on your agreement as an added charge. You're not saving anything! Also watch for toll roads. A month later you will be charged a $15 administrative fee for every $1.32 cent toll charge. I don't understand why companies are deceptive, but the old adage you get what you pay for is so true. Beware!

Absolutely disgusted with Thrifty in the US. Rented a car from them in May and was offered a Sunpass for tolls. This was offered for $50 for seven days. We rented the car for 11 days. Our Sat Nav was set up to avoid Tolls so didn't need the SunPass. However when we visited Tampa, due to a RTA we were re-directed down a road with a Toll. When we returned the Car we advised the clerk of this issue. They checked on the system and told us that it was okay and that no Toll charge had been issued on the car, we did offer to pay. Totally unavoidable and not in our control.
We have just had a letter from Thrifty telling us that that Toll charged us $0.53c but there was a $15 admin fee. This has already been deducted from our card. This is theft and for a $0.53c charge is totally unacceptable and we will never rent from Thrifty again and suggest people check documentation. Other companies charge a much less admin fee. We don't agree with the charge at all but we were happy to pay the fee not the admin charge. Disgusting.

I rented a Jeep Compass from Thrifty from 6/29 - 7/2. At least that is what I requested. When I arrived in Tampa Florida I was told as a convenience to not have me wait I would be upgraded to a Chevy Malibu. This was not an upgrade given I wanted a small SVU off the ground and I saw the Jeep Compass in the lot. Secondly, I was told that it would save me money to prepurchase gas and I could bring the tank back empty. I returned the tank full though the person who checked me in said it was halfway between three-fourths and full. When I tried to get the money back for the gas (that I didn't use) the representative told me the cost for one-eighth a tank of gas would come to approximately $32.00. I had prepaid $29.37.
Do not rent from this company. You will reserve one car class/group and in the disguise of an upgrade that will give you another car. Also, do not buy the repurchase. The gas was cheaper in Tampa that the rep lead me to believe. If you have to rent a car, do yourself a favor and go with a more reputable company. They will not try to nickel and dime you with fees and have a better selection of vehicles. I will never rent from Thrifty (or Dollar because they are the same company) EVER again.

But, then I just got a charge of thirty dollars on my debit card without warning and I have no idea why. Are they going to keep my card forever and keep charging me for stuff I don't know about? It wouldn't surprise me. It seems like that is how the world makes money so I'm not surprised, but I wish I knew why I was getting charged. They had my reservation for the correct amount that I had reserved the car for. They requested two credit card imprints, one for the rental fee and one for a $1700 damage deposit. They stated that they did not process the damage deposit unless there was a problem. However, they processed both charges within days of my rental, even though the rental agreement says I won't be charged until I return the car. Thrifty Car Rental now says that they have no access to the rental charges in Morocco, that it is a contract company to Thrifty and basically that it is my problem. He then asked us where we came from and said, "the Arkansas insurance does not cover rental cars." We said we are from Arkansas but we are with an insurance company not in Arkansas. Now looking back, this guy was totally lying as the coverage of an insurance should have nothing to do with the state of residence. Anyway, we just clearly declined any additional insurance and then this guy process with the paperwork.
We then went to pick up area to pick up the car and was asked to sign on an small iPad at the exit. Trusting the guy has not put any charge and assuming everything being taken care of, I just went ahead signed on the iPad without reading the specific items (Who would when you are sitting at the car at the exit?). We returned the car in about a week without any issue but when we came back home, we found a charge of $26.88 per day for insurance, totaling up to $161.28.
I called their CS and was transferred to a lady in the billing office. She said Thrifty will not refund because we signed the contract. I argued that we declined and were only deceived to sign. She was silent for a few seconds but still refuse to refund. I asked to speak a supervisor or manager but she said there is no supervisor or manager and she is the only person in power.
I should have come here to review numerous complaints on the same issue and then I would absolutely turn to some other car rentals. Two employees attempted to charge me for an extra day of rental, saying that I brought the car back an hour late. We took out the car at 1 pm and brought it back just before 1 pm on the drop-off date. Additionally, it was not explained to me when I picked up the car that they would be putting a $246 hold on my credit card. I am now waiting for the funds to be released. I received a bill with the correct charges, then 10 minutes or so later, I received an updated bill with a fuel charge. I did not keep the receipt from the gas station because everything was in order and I did fill the car up at a gas station within 10 miles from the return location. I called customer service and they would not help me remove the charge, I even spoke with a manager (Mark) and he would not help me either. I called back and got another representative who would remove half of the charge.
The return process for cars is flawed! If there is a discrepancy it should be noted and made aware by the attendant immediately upon return, not after the fact nor when the customer has already left the site location and more problematic the state the vehicle was returned. Even if I did keep the receipt, I would still be upset with the fact that I have to forward the receipt to remove such a charge.
I am an extremely upset customer and because of this incident I will never use 'Thrifty' ever again! I make for certain to always follow car rental rules and am a very responsible individual who most certainly understands return the car with the amount of gas it was taken from upon receipt. I will be posting a bad review for Thrifty Car Rental on as many websites as I possibly can. I booked a flight and car rental through Spirit back in February 2017. My car rental ended up being $170 and some change. Once arriving to Denver's Thrifty, there was a man there that did not know what he was doing, took an hour and a half to finally (with another attendant) get my little Ford Fiesta, THE SMALLEST CAR THERE. Other than the deposit, the attendant said there would only be a fee for $55.77 which was for tolls. I told him "that's fine" (Which brings my total to about $225 for a couple day rental). Upon returning the car, there was zero system, you just dropped the car off, they checked everything out and said "you're good to go." NO COPY OF PAPERWORK OR WHAT OTHER FEES THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE FROM YOU.
A day after I returned the car, I was charged the said amount of $55.77, and didn't think anything of it because that was accurate. However, the following day I was charged an EXTRA $226.33 (now my total rental for THE SMALLEST CAR ON THE LOT adds up to approx. $450). I was never told I would be charged this amount on top of the already paid $225, or I would have gotten a car from somewhere else. I filed a claim with my bank, which they said they could not give me the unauthorized charge of $226 back because Thrifty said it was billed correctly. Again, I have yet to receive paperwork or an email. There are apparently Airport fees of $39, State Fees of $60, toll fees of $50, and some "other" fees for $39 that they DO NOT tell you about. This company is taking your money, they are all SCAM ARTISTS. They trick you and do not tell you any of what you NEED to hear, just what they WANT you to hear in order to rent a car from them.

I say I already paid for the car and don't want any extra charges and he assures me this is just the deposit in case of lost keys or smoking damage. Ok, I sign it, drive to my destination.
I looked at the paper that he tucked away in a booklet when I got home and it says "accepted fuel option", "accepted insurance option" so I call and they tell me there is nothing they can do over the phone, I have to talk to a manager. Well, my flight back was at 3 in the morning and when I dropped the car off, there was NO ONE there. No one to take the car, or talk with. And two days later I'm charged with the $150.00, mind you I filled the tank to FULL when I returned it, and still was charged for an optional fuel option of $40.00 when I already filled it up. And of course they are sold out of bigger cars so could not offer me anything else as a replacement.
After complaining to them for ages, they say they have a 7 seater vehicle, not at the airport but another location that we could rent but it would be an additional $214. And as they don't see it as their fault, we had to pay. They said that the description we got from Thrifty is incorrect. So we were driven by them to where we were staying, we had to wait in for the car to arrive, but yes we had transport during the vacation. She never offered us the toll coverage nor told us about any administrative fees. Today, we just received a bill from them demanding $9.00 in tolls and $90 for administrative fees. I am going to call them to dispute this, but this was an obvious way to try to make money from us because she was upset that we didn't buy the LDW coverage. Will never rent from Thrifty again. Avoid Thrifty and Dollar at all cost!

I spoke with a customer service representative on a Thursday afternoon inquiring about renting a car at the Sanford Airport in Florida and returning it to the Clearwater Airport in Clearwater, Florida. I specifically asked if the car rental agency was located in the terminals. I was told that they were located off site but they provided a shuttle service from the airports to the rental agencies and from the agencies to the airport. I again specifically stated that I needed to be at the Clearwater Airport at 6:30 am and was told that would not be a problem. So I prepaid for a vehicle. About 15 minutes later, my husband was looking at the Clearwater Airport site and it stated that the Thrifty agency did not open until 7 am so how were we going to get to the airport?
Good question. I called Thrifty 800 number and they stated that yes the agency did not open until 7 am. I said I spoke with someone about 15 minutes ago and they stated that I would be able to get at 6:30 am. If you aren't open how is that going to happen. The rep stated that there must have been an error. I said well then I need to cancel my reservation. The rep then told me that she could not help me since I prepaid and that I would need to call another telephone number that started with 363. I called that number and was on hold for 40 minutes before I hung up. I called the 800 number again, explained my situation and was told to a different number that started with 312. Again, I call the 312 number and explained my situation.
The rep told me that since I did not cancel within 48 hours I would be refunded everything except $55. I asked how could I cancel within 48 hours when I just reserved the about 40 minutes ago? She said that is their policy. I asked to have the $55 refunded as I did not feel that this was an error on my part and she stated that that's the policy, a fee is charged. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told that Jenny wasn't available. I know $55 isn't a lot of money to Thrifty but it is to a stroke victim who is on a limited income. Will not EVER rent from Thrifty and will tell anyone who wants to rent a car about this issue. Very poor customer service in my opinion.

I recently booked a flight and car rental for my daughter and her fiance who are both in the USAF. The rental cost me $350 for 4 days. When they went to pick up the car, they were charged an additional $300 due to the fact that the driver was 24- not 25. So obviously you can protect their lives, just not rent a car!!! On top of it all- they received a $125 charge on their credit card. $35 was for one toll they had to go thru. The rest was additional "admin" charges. Customer Service was NO HELP. I asked to speak to someone in a higher position- she told me that she was the highest that it goes.

After 9 calls to Thrifty Car I will have to wait up to 20 business days and then could be denied a refund of the $309.01 that they took from my account at the time of booking.

A friend and I rented a car to drive from Miami to Orlando and while the car was comfortable and came without issues the charges for our 6 hour rental were another story completely. While at the counter the agent had no problem encouraging us to get insurance we didn't need but failed to mention to us that the Orlando airport is remote and has no gas stations nearby and we should be sure to stop at the first available one along the way or there will be a charge of $9.99 USD to fill the tank, had we been made aware of this we would have surely taken the option of prepaying at pickup, but again none of this was discussed.
Upon returning the car at Orlando airport the agent closed the bill and charged us over $120 to put back 3/4 of a tank of gas. When we attempted to speak with the agent about the gas cost he told us we would have to go into the airport and speak with the people at the desk. We checked into our flight and proceeded downstairs to the Thrifty desk to sort out the bill and we were told that the agent that took the car in closed the bill and we would now have to deal directly with the agents in Miami.
Upon arrival back in Montreal and a phone call to Thrifty the best they could do for us was to cut the bill down to $60 US which is still a ridiculous amount of money to be charging to fill a Jeep Cherokee in Florida which would have been $35 at the most, even less as there was a quarter of a tank in it when we dropped it off. I feel like I was hijacked by these people without the gun. Beware when renting cars that the rental companies charge you more than four times the cost of gasoline at the pump if you return it without filling it or prepaying the cost of the fill up at the time of pickup. I wish I had known this before I rented, would have saved me a lot of money and headaches trying to sort it out.

Checked into the Orlando airport, we had pre-booked our vehicle through RBC Avion. We asked about the prepaid toll option, inquiring if it was just charged as you use it? She laughed and said "No, it's $11 a day." I then asked her if it was worth it as we were travelling up the Gulf Highway and she told me there were tolls on ALL highways. Left the airport, drive through TWO tolls on the way out of Orlando and never saw another one for TEN DAYS, until we returned to Orlando. And I mean, we traveled. Crystal River, Destin, Atlantic Beach, St. Augustine.
Called the toll-free and they told us to take it up with the agent at the desk. When we told her what I wrote here, she said, "But did you go through a toll?" I told her that we had been mislead about tolls on every highway. She then said that there are some tolls that you might not see, like a board across a highway. I knew then there was no arguing with her, you can't fix stupid. She offered to refund our money but then each till we did go through would be considered a ticket and could possibly impede us from driving again in Florida. Never again, Thrifty.

I reserved online and picked up my car from the LAX location. I bought the extra insurance and the prepaid gas. When I dropped the car off, I was charged $17/day for the insurance instead of the $11/day I was told it would cost; I also was charged an extra $10 for pre-paid gas (BTW I returned it with half a tank, so they really made extra on me). When I phoned to resolve this, I was told the prices the agent gave me were estimates; I explained that he did not say they were estimates; in fact quite the opposite. I was put on hold and disconnected 3 times. After spending an hour trying to resolve the extra costs, I gave up. I suspect that Thrifty counts on people not checking their receipts and that they regularly inflate prices.

First time rented a car with Thrifty for 3 days from Orlando airport (Thrifty rental record # **), and returned to the same place. It took *** 2 hours and 15 minutes wait time *** in the line on 04/07/17 1:00 AM in the Thrifty airport car rental front-desk, before I get my turn. After waiting patiently for so long asked if I can get a free upgrade if any vehicles available. The front-desk person first hesitates, and then says yes upgrading me from sedan to midsize apologizing for the long wait time... So far so good.
I declined Loss damage and roadside assistance when the front-desk person asked for them during checkout.. But still some charges show up in the authorize screen for me to sign before checking out. I inform her that I have paid for this rental already online through my airline, and expecting to pay only the taxes and the gas. And when I ask her what those charges are about? She responds saying something to this effect *** DEPOSIT TOWARDS THE RENTAL *** and tells me that "NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT... AND THOSE CHARGES WILL BE BLOCKED IN YOUR CREDIT CARD BUT WILL NOT BE CHARGED." I believe her words and "E-SIGN THE CONTRACT" and walking away with the paperwork and the car...
When I return the car, the service personnel who records the mileage hands me with $241 bill which included several coverages which I did not authorize. When I asked him about it. He says "DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT... THAT AMOUNT WILL NOT BE CHARGED... IT SHOWS UP AS SOME KIND OF DEPOSIT." I walk away peacefully to board my flight only to notice 2 days later that my card was charged for $142 additional towards ***$112 - TOWARDS Loss damage and roadside assistance*** WHICH I DENIED DURING CHECKOUT, and "$30 TOWARDS upgrade" which was told I am not charged for.
When I call the customer service about this, I get routed to 3 different number and after waiting on the call for 20 minutes, I was told that I have **SIGNED UP A CONTRACT FOR THE Loss damage and roadside assistance AS PER MY RENTAL AGREEMENT.** WHAT A SCAM... I cannot forget that fat lady's face who lied to me while checkout from Orlando airport terminal B ON 04/07/17 3:12am LOCAL TIME. If your company is telling you to do this kind of scam, rather go find a new job elsewhere. This is sick... Never experienced before...
By the way - I would blame it on me booking a Thrifty or a Dollar brand when I had several other reliable choices which I had used in the past. I used to work in the rental car business so I knew to ask if it was a one time fee or per day. We declined. Didn't ask for our confirmation number and proceeded to show us a contract for just under $200. I reserved it for a total price of $120. Only after I questioned it, did she fix it, and very reluctantly. Picked out our car and took pictures of minor damages since there was no one in the lot to check it over with us. Small crack in windshield and minor marks and scratches in 2 areas.
We had to be at the airport at 4:30 am when it was time to return the car and decided to call customer service to make sure someone would be there at that time, as well as the shuttle would be running. Was assured 2 times from 2 different agents that they are open 24 hours. Got to the rental at 4:00, and building was completely black, no one around not even in the lot. Drove to enterprise and they told us to go to the Dollar counter since they are the same company. Maybe one of the customer service reps should have mentioned that. I was lost, a reserve is a hold regardless off the time and this wasn't specified on the website. So the employee told me to fill out to become a rewards member, that way he could get into the reservation and let me rent early and it charges you $1 for that.
Then he proceeded to tell me, "Oh I understand you have a credit card however, it's a MasterCard so we have to treat it as a debit card and do a $250 hold." I told him I didn't recall reading that on the site. He turned the computer all the way around so I could see this all the way at the bottom of the screen, very tiny then the rest of the writing. He apologized and I said that was fine. I by no means am going to max out my card for a rental when I needed to do other purchases.
He told me to contact customer service because I prepaid. I just came back from a week-long trip and discovered that Thrifty charged me an additional $170 for insurance - after I declined insurance coverage! I carry extra insurance for rental cars (it's only $5/month), and always decline coverage. When I called Thrifty to object to the charge, they said that it was a valid charge as far as they are concerned. The customer service agent said it is my responsibility to review the contract and declined to take action.
As it happens, the rental agent at the counter was unable to print the contract. After several tries, she went to a different station and returned with the contract folded and in an envelope. She asked me to sign on an electronic screen, and I did so assuming that she had done her job correctly. When I asked for a receipt upon returning the car, I was told that I would have to get in the very long line at the rental counter to receive a receipt. Rather than miss my flight, I decided to forego waiting for a receipt. I discovered the incorrect charge only when I checked my credit card company website. The unauthorized charge, the absurdity of making a customer wait in a long line for a receipt, and the refusal to acknowledge their error mean that I'm out $170, and they have lost a customer. I strongly recommend that others use another rental company.

We agreed to the second driver charge and the pre-paid toll fee since the agent insisted the only way to exit the airport was thru a toll and that our final destination would require tolls. We also had a lengthy discussion about insurance, we DECLINED the insurance. I did not look over the paperwork since I assumed the agent would be honest and correctly charge us for what was discussed. Upon returning the car we told the check-in agent we only went thru one toll, she kindly removed the toll upgrade fee ($36).

At Thrifty Car Rental, Ft Lauderdale Airport we were told that toll charges could be up to $100 for our week visit to Florida and it was recommended by Thrifty that we purchase the PlatePass for $50 since many Florida Toll Roads DO NOT accept cash or credit cards. We felt stuck. Then quick thinking reminded us to call our friend who just moved to Florida to see if we should purchase the PlatePass for $50. She said absolutely not. But to buy a SunPass mini at the drugstore for $5.00 and load it with $10 (or whatever amount we thought we would need - we had no idea how much to load and to be safe (since there was a fee if we ran short) we loaded with $30.) It was easy as we had internet service at our hotel. We opened an account with SunPass and at the end of the trip we used $5 in toll fees and the balance was refunded by Sunpass to our credit card very promptly... Just remember to take the Sunpass mini off the windshield when you return the car.
So, my recommendation is not to purchase the PlatePass. It is an upcharge that is not needed. The Thrifty people were insistent that we needed it and we did not. It is unfair to not be given options and not to be told about the purchase of the SunPass at the drugstore. We could be given the option and let us decide... Maybe we would choose the PlatePass if we did not have time to stop and purchase the SunPass at the drugstore or didn't want the hassle/short on time. Just an fyi, we toured mainly around Ft Lauderdale, Miami, and up to Delray Beach... Could be different story if you travel more extensively.

She seemed confused and finally said something to the effect of "Oh, we haven't heard anything about them, they must not be doing that right now." Of course I did not believe her, and on the entire trip to Key West I very carefully only went through toll booths at the "Cash" lanes. Apparently there are a couple of places in Florida where you don't have this choice because I got 3 charges of $1.32 each on my car. No big deal, right? Wrong! I just got an invoice from Thrifty for not only the $3.96 for the tolls but an "Administrative Fee" of $15.00 per fee, for a total of $45 in fees on top of the tolls!
Trip Advisor has a very good article on these tolls in Florida. Turns out most other rental companies do NOT require you to opt in. Coverage is automatic. Even if I HAD opted in, it would have cost me $9.00 per day for the entire rental, even though I only had these tolls on ONE day. Several other companies charge as little as $3.95 per day, and ONLY on those days where you actually incur a toll charge. In my opinion, this is an outrageous action by Thrifty. They should enroll a person automatically, and a more reasonable charge for this service is indicated. Never will rent from them again.

After an average to moderate wait I gave the agent my drivers license and credit card and picked up the rental paperwork. I was told to go up to the garage and pick up a car from the full size lane.
I picked up a Buick model, loaded my luggage and drove to the gate. At the gate the attendant again asked for my drivers license and credit card. She mumbled something about how I wanted the basic correct? After a long wait the agent began writing something on my windshield with soap. She said she couldn't rent me that car. I asked why and she said it was due for an oil change. I had to back up (now there was a line behind me) and pick up another car.
The only car left was a Chevy Cruze with almost 40,000 miles on it. I transferred all my belongings to the Cruze while hoping I forgot nothing in the dark. I checked out with the second car. At no point was I told any charges would be added to my prepaid rental. I returned the car at around 11:00 AM on Friday, February 24 at IAH. At first there was no one around to check in the car. Finally a lady with the portable unit showed up. She printed a receipt and I said this was a prepaid rental. Again she said nothing about any additional charge.
After arriving home I checked the receipt in detail and discovered that I had been charged any additional amount of over $168 for LDW. I never was told during the entire rental process that this was being added. I later called the Thrifty Customer Service line and the agent said that I had signed for it and I had to pay it. Eventually she said she could refund 50% of the cost. I said that was not a satisfactory offer. I left a complaint on the Thrifty web page and all they said was that since the LDW was on the contract I am stuck with it. They said they are sending me a $50 gift certificate towards a future rental. I will never use it.
I suspect that Thrifty employees are given incentives to sell high profit margin items like insurance. I always decline the insurance because I am covered through my own insurance and through additional coverage on my business VISA card. I think this amounts to a deceptive business practice that preys on hurried travelers rushing to get to their motel or catch a flight.
Updated on 3/19/2017 - I wanted to followup on my experience with Thrifty Car Rental. After contacting Thrifty via their web complaint for I received an answer that they would not refund my payment for extra insurance but that I would receive a gift certificate good for $50 towards a future rental. My certificate arrived this week. The first thing I noticed was that it had an expiration date of June 30, 2017. So I have only 3-1/2 months to use it. It sounds like they are betting that I won't use the certificate. They would be correct. I considered it to be an insult.

The monkeys working at the Thrifty Car Rental in Aruba are nothing short of complete idiots (Tatiana, Lisette, and some other guy)! These thieves are the most incompetent, unfriendly, dishonest people I have ever run across in my world travels. NEVER RENT FROM THEM! They have no concept of customer satisfaction or manners. They're rude and don't care that they're working in a paradise, where people want to go there to get away from life's stressful moments. Also, these idiots don't seem to realize that tourism is their #1 source of income for their economy. They cheat you out of gas money and credit card transactions and don't care what you have to say about that.
I filled up my full size van with the same amount of gas that was present when I took the van and was told that I had under-filled. I told them that this is the exact spot where I saw the needle when I took it and they did not change their minds. After asking to see pictures of when the van was taken on the first day, they showed me and the before/after needle on the gas gauge was identical. Yet, they still charged me for gas nonetheless. In the process of me discussing this issue with them, I had heard THREE different people arguing with the Thrifty Car rental employees that they specifically requested that their credit card not be charged because they were paying for their rental through cash. Yet, they were still charged and refused to reverse the charges. DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY!!

I rented a car on 2/16 from Thrifty LAX and the attendant told me I was OBLIGED by the State of California to get SLI or LIS (Supplemental Liability Insurance) coverage, which doubled the price of my rental. I was hesitant, as I had already read that no coverage was mandatory in CA and not only that, my credit card covered all my car insurance, but he INSISTED, saying he was not allowed to rent me the car without that coverage. Tired from a 14hr flight, I unwillingly paid up and drove off. A few days later, speaking to a friend who's an attorney, he told me SLI is NOT mandatory in CA and that they should have never forced me to pay for it, let alone lie to my face in order to get more money. I rented a car at the Miami airport in early February 2017. The estimated fee was about $70 for a 36 hour period. The agent offered me add-ons at the desk, including a toll fee. I had no idea if I needed this, but the agent led me to believe that if I didn't choose it, I would have to go through some complicated process to pay tolls and that tolls would be everywhere. So, I wound up paying $20.00 for a couple of dollars in tolls. Much worse is the fuel charge. I understood that if I brought the car back with a less than full tank I would have to pay a fuel charge. This did not concern me because most companies charge to fill up the tank more or less at market price. The Thrifty/Dollar agent failed to point out that I would be charged $10.00 per gallon! With gas in Miami about $2.50 per gallon this is just a complete rip-off. I would never again rent from a company again exploits its customers like Thrifty/Dollar does!

Rented a compact car from San Francisco Airport. Filled out paperwork and was sent out to get keys on another level. Once they gave them to me he just pointed in the direction of the car. After leaving we noticed a small chip in the windshield. As it's been raining for weeks in California, using the wipers accentuated the crack bigger. After dropping off the car and the attendant too busy to get to us we left the car. Within an hour an additional charge of $200 plus taxes was levied on my card. Spent countless calls trying to reconcile this issue. Nothing but excuses and promises of returned calls, with no reply. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE GUYS EVER. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

My Canadian travel agent booked a "Toyota Corolla or similar" car for us for a week beginning 17.01.29. At the service counter, around 10 am, we were handed over an invoice with 3 times more cost than quoted. The reason, the woman said, was that my auto insurance does not have enough coverage, and that we need to purchase their insurance. Then at the parking lot, we saw not a single Toyota Corolla but many Korean Hyundai. That made me wonder if they have any Corolla at all in the first place. After picking up the car and met with my friend who had been renting car frequently in L.V., I was told that I really did not need the insurance from Thrifty. And also I should not purchase the pre-paid full tank of gas because they charged more than a full tank than if filled by myself.
The next day I went back to Thrifty to reverse the policy. The staff applied high pressure on us, saying things like "don't listen to your friends", "there is always a first time for accident to happen" etc. Anyway, because we had used the car for one day already, and had to pay the insurance for that one day, they handed us a bill that would made our change of policy totally meaningless. So go there with a very strong will unless money is not a problem. But if we were not on a budget, we would go to Hertz. We will never rent anything from Thrifty in future, as I prefer to deal with good and honest people.

I picked up my car on a very wet dark day at Sea-Tac at approximately 2:55 PM on Jan 26, 2017. I had proceeded to the pickup point on the third lower level of the parking garage. The lighting at that level was very poor when I inspected my car before driving away and it appeared to be O.K. I drove the car 115 miles to a home and later to another home, then returned to first home, then finally to the airport for the car return prior to my leaving on my flight to Phoenix, AZ on Jan 29, 2017 at 9:17 AM.
I was informed at my car return that there was slight damage to the lower right corner of the bumper (this type of damage could only come from a street curb, and the only curb that I was near was only about 2 inches high at my son's home). A slight rock chip to the very upper edge of the windshield was also discovered. These damages had to have been there when I inspected the car, but due to the poor lighting conditions I did not see them. I would have had to have a flashlight to see them. Please correct this kind of a situation. I suggest that you inform this Sea-Tac location to provide inspection flashlights to their customers at the car pickup, so all concerned may "be sure" that there is no damage to the car. I don't remember ever renting a car from Thrifty before, but this experience may have been a learning experience. Don't rent from Thrifty?

I rented a vehicle with Thrifty for my business associate from Ecuador (who was not familiar with norms of customer service from a car rental company in the US) because it was the most economic option available. Upon receiving the vehicle, he was handed the keys to a smaller vehicle than I had reserved and told "Go get your car over in that corner." The car was still wet from being washed, and NO ONE FROM THRIFTY CHECKED OVER THE CAR FOR SCRATCHES AND DENTS in his presence. He wasn't asked to sign anything. He left the Miami airport and later had to pull over to use his water bottle to wash the windshield b/c there was NO WINDSHIELD FLUID.
I called to complain about the size of the car, the poor service and lack of windshield fluid only to get transferred from one operator to the next between Dollar and Thrifty, and NO ONE COULD REPORT MY COMPLAINTS NOR DID THEY OFFER AN APOLOGY. The only positive thing about this experience is that the renter went to another Thrifty branch where he switched the rental for a car that represented the reserved size and had windshield fluid.
It gets worse... the renter returned the vehicle to MIA and saw that there was a very long line of angry customers who were in a hurry. So, when it was his turn, he was rushed out of the car and DIDN'T HAVE THE CHANCE TO REVIEW THE CAR FOR ITEMS LEFT BEHIND. He had a lot of luggage, and unfortunately, he didn't realize until he was already at the check-in counter that he had left behind a laptop computer on top of the trunk cover. He went back to Thrifty less than 45 min later to recover the laptop. The car had already been washed and the computer was gone. The manager said that the only thing he could do was file a report online and wait until the lost and found opened 3 days later after the weekend. The on-duty manager WOULD NOT take action to speak with Thrifty employees in the car wash or vehicle return to inquire about the missing laptop.
I just spoke with the person in charge of the Lost and Found. She said that she did not find anything and told me the following: maybe the renter left the computer at the hotel, maybe another customer who was returning his vehicle took the computer from my friend's car, maybe the next customer who is renting the car took the computer, I could call the police to file a report, I could submit a report online to the lost and found (even though I told her several times I had already done this). She was NOT WILLING to investigate with the employees who washed the car or handled the return to see if any of them saw the computer. Apparently, the police can do this three days later?!? This resulted in a loss of over $900. I was never once even offered an apology for the horrible service during the various phone calls (other than I'm sorry I can't do anything for you). IN CONCLUSION, DON'T EVER RENT FROM THRIFTY, not even if it's free!!!

I immediately went back to the rental agency to switch out vehicles. The operator closed out and reopened a new agreement instead of just modifying the existing agreement. I've used Thrifty/Dollar for many years with absolutely no problems and have always enjoyed the experience (5 stars for reasonable rental fees and customer service). However, my latest visit was not as enjoyable as I had hoped. I visit my mom every year for the holidays in MA (I'm from IL) and, as is the case in many states, the toll roads have become all electronic. If you are familiar with Boston Logan airport at all, you'll know that the only (and easiest) way to head due west (to Springfield) is to take the MA turnpike.
By Thanksgiving of 2016 the MA pike had become completely electronic - no more ability to pay cash. The total toll is reasonable for the 2 hour trip - $8. However, Thrifty adds an admin fee of $15 on top of the toll (in this day and age of electronic processing what exactly does that $15 cover?). While that charge in and of itself is not so bad (though still somewhat unreasonable) they actually charge it for EACH toll - I hit several toll "cameras" on my way from Logan to Springfield even though I never got off the pike. Each toll is separate and triggers a separate $15 admin fee (the counter clerk never mentioned this, but corporate told me it is "embedded" in the contract somewhere).
Bottom line - Thrifty is asking me to pay $105 in admin fees for total tolls of $15.70. VERY UNREASONABLE. I called to complain and after getting shuffled from customer service rep to customer service rep (8 times) the last one said there is nothing she could do about it and that I should sue them. Normally I am asked if I want the extra insurance coverages but this agent simply presented me a sheet of paper and asked if I wanted their high-end coverage, medium coverage, or basic coverage. Because I am covered for any of the extra insurance changes via my personal car insurance, I made the assumption that their basic coverage was what I needed to choose and accepted that. There was no explanation that this included a $28 per day surcharge for Loss Damage Waiver and premium roadside assistance at $8 per day, effectively doubling my daily rental fee.
While it is my fault for not reading the printout that was produced at the end, this is the first time renting that I have not specifically been given the opportunity to decline all of the insurance offerings. Usually when that happens I receive the hard sell to accept the insurance surcharges. I contacted Thrifty customer service through email and they replied that since I had signed the agreement with the charges they won't refund the $110. The car itself was fine, but based on other complaints here, it seems that adding extra charges is a common scamming practice of theirs. In the end it definitely wasn't a thrifty rental. #NeverAgainThrifty

I prepaid for a compact car a few months before my trip thinking I was getting a military discount. Once at the airport the lines for rental cars were very long, so when I got to the counter things seemed rushed. I was told no compacts were available, and I was upgraded to a mid-size car. (Not realizing I was charged $15.00 more per day.) I was also charged with full insurance even though I mentioned I'm covered. ($28.49 more per day.) We tried to leave with the 1st car and the attendant said it needed an oil change and made us take it back. We took a 2nd car and got out of the garage and onto the highway before the RPM went in the red so I took it back. (While returning this car we saw another couple returning the 1st car.)
When we got the 3rd car everything seemed fine. When I came back 2 days later to return it I saw my bill was $247.00 more than I first paid for. I asked how can I get this corrected and was told I had to dispute now or it won't be disputed. Well this is where they have you over a barrel. I had an hour before my flight but then line to fix this was too long. When I got home I called and they were very understanding and offered a full $25.00 back. That's it. I feel it's a real bait and switch and will never use THRIFTY again.

Booked on Expedia. It said I booked compact or larger. (They pick.) Price was reasonable so I went for it. Got to Thrifty Rental and they were going to give us such a small vehicle can't even fit us in. When I booked it said compact or larger but of course he would only give us the smallest one possible! He said we could upgrade which we had to even though it was still a small car. It costed $27 more a day (which he did not make clear) as our total was then looking at $312 additional for 10 days! I interpreted him as we just had to pay the difference between what we paid before and now. NOPE! He was not clear at all!!! PLUS he added an additional driver and I lamented to him how awesome this company is for giving an additional free driver for free!!! He didn't say anything. Just charged us and I even said to him how nice a company and that I would come to them for that added benefit! NOPE!!!
Later I called Thrifty and they said "No we charge and if you booked you are the only allowed driver!" I'm so ashamed at this company. I don't think they deserve any business whatsoever! I called and asked to talk to someone higher up and they said there is no one! So our trip ended up being way above budget! The guy also asked if we have AAA and we said "No." He said he would add it to bring down price which he didn't!!! Lie!

I reserved and prepaid an SUV to be picked up late at night on November 6, 2016, at the New Orleans airport. I had to walk about a half mile to get to the rental car building. I presented my reservation, my driver's license and my debit card with Visa logo, and indicated that the vehicle had already been paid for. I understood there would be an additional hold on my bank card and that a credit check would be performed. I explained that I do not use credit cards so no doubt my score would be very low. My PREPAID vehicle was declined on the basis of the credit check. I was stranded in the middle of the night with no rental car. Luckily, I walked two counters down and rented a car from Enterprise in about 10 minutes. After dealing with the medical situation that I was in town for, I called, as I had been instructed to do by the Thrifty counter agent, to acquire a refund of my prepaid amount, which was 132 and change dollars.
After being run around and around and around by these clowns, I finally got the right person. I was told there was NO refund. Period. I prepaid. I did not rent the car because they would not allow me to, and I would get no refund. I asked for a supervisor. In a bored and increasingly rude voice I was informed that a supervisor would tell me the same thing and there was no supervisor available and no, I could not have a supervisor call me back nor could I hold until one was available. I was finally told I could be sent an email to beg them to refund the charge and while it probably would not be refunded I was welcome to knock myself out trying. The words "beg" and "knock myself out" were THEIR words, not mine.
I am returning from my trip, today, November 10. I will call my bank and report a fraudulent charge because that is surely what this is, pure and simple. I will also look into filing a small claims action because it is wrong to take people's money, then NOT provide the product or service and keep the money. How ABSURD! Maybe I will even try to get on one of those judge shows--I would LOVE to warn everyone in this country about this TOTAL SCAM!!

On October 28, 2016, around 9:00 a.m. Thrifty confirmation #**. Upon returning my rental car at the Orlando Airport, I forgot to take the key fob out of my pocket! When I got inside the airport, I realized that I forgot to leave the key. So, I went back out to the Thrifty office in the parking garage and gave my key fob to an employee, who took my name and car type. Then they charged me $250.00 for a lost key fob. I contacted Customer Service and explained what happened, and got no help. They said they would look into it! Now, I have not heard back from them and my credit card was charged an additional $250.00. I contacted my credit card company and will dispute this payment. I am thinking about contacting my attorney. Please advise. Thank you.

I rented a mid-size SUV from Boston Logan Airport for a week and my name was the only one listed as the driver. During the course of the week, I developed pneumonia. It would have been a hardship to return the car all the way to the airport then take public transportation back to my home 45 minutes away. I called Thrifty to ask if I could have a friend return the car instead. What ensued in the next two hours over the telephone was beyond what I could have imagined from a Customer Service Center.
I was informed by the first agent I spoke with that this since I did not have an additional driver listed, I had to personally return the car. I explained how sick I was (which of course was already obvious from my voice) but the agent politely explained that having someone else return the vehicle was not possible because I never paid for an additional driver. I said that I would pay the additional driver cost for the entire week now if it saved me from driving the vehicle to the airport. He put me on hold several times while he was checking with a supervisor. He comes back on the line and says "that's not possible" and states Thrifty's policies over and over. No leniency. NONE! I asked to speak to a supervisor.
After waiting on hold for at least 20 minutes, a friendly supervisor comes on the line and just reiterates what the previous agent said. When I could not accept his lack of flexibility in the extremely rigid policy, he said he would transfer me to another department. I explained my predicament AGAIN to the rep with my strained voice and she said shell contact a Thrifty supervisor @ Boston Logan Airport. He gave me the same rhetoric of Thrifty's policies but offered two options: 1) have the car towed at my expense to the airport or 2) extend the rental and return it when I felt better.
In the end, Thrifty forced a physically ill person to drive a rental car 45 minutes to the airport and then take public transportation back home just so Thrifty's rules could be followed precisely!!! Then, NO ONE ASKED FOR IDENTIFICATION OR PAPERWORK!!! ANYBODY COULD HAVE DROPPED OFF THE VEHICLE!!! I was shocked at the lack of compassion for my illness and stringency to rules over human health! Absolutely flabbergasted!!! Drive away from renting from Thrifty and tell everyone you know to do the same!!!

I went online on October 12, 2016 to book a car with Thrifty. I put in the dates from October 15, 2016 2:30 pm to October 20, 2016 2:30 pm. When I booked the car it show two fees. One was a prepay to save the rental cost at the said amount. My deposit was $141.95 for a weekly rental rate. My charges for the week would be approx. $246.75 which included taxes and charges of $104.80. When I printed my reservation it stated $243.45 per week, $105.20 mandatory charges bringing the total to $248.65. 2nd time a different amount appeared. Only a few dollars different but still ok. Upon arrival at the airport I had to walk from the terminal to the rental building with a knee brace on after I had been wheelchair escorted from gate to gate my entire flight due to medical problems which caused me more pain.
Upon arriving at the counter was asked if I was Thrifty or Dollar rental because they were side by side. The person asked me if I had my rental confirmation voucher which I presented to her and she asked for ID. I am on the phone dealing with a death which is why I was there, having a two hour drive ahead of me and in a lot of pain needing to take medication. She asked me if I wanted insurance and I replied "what is your standard", which is not saying yes and next thing I knew she was having me sign and handed me my paperwork with a cost of $404.49. I quickly glanced thing the additional amount was a deposit. I was renting a compact car which on one paperwork said Nissan Versa and another Chevrolet Spark (or similar).
Needless to say I did not have much of a choice when I went to get the car because only two cars were left in economy both being a Sonic 5D. I chose the cleanest of the two and proceeded to leave to face over a two hour drive. Upon return the attendant finally came to the car and gave me a printout. I then proceeded to leave the building for the terminal and again two golf carts were sitting empty and no driver in sight and I was left once again to walk to the terminal with my injury. I was taken to my gate in a wheelchair since I am not suppose to walk long distances. Finally after arriving home and getting my mind settled and being in so much pain I am in bed now, having to use a walker. I am sure a lot of it was attributed from having to walk from one building to another.
When I started going thru my rental paperwork is when I started seeing all of the differences. My return time had been changed from 2:30 to 2:20, insurance for $199.43 and premium road service for $63.92 and additional rental time for $10.16. My rental had gone from roughly $325.65 which included rental insurance of $77.00 for the week which Thrifty had quoted me on the phone if I wanted to get it to $469.45 and no where was my $141.95 included. I have been given the run around for a week now. Everything from phony names (wrote down the name stated at beginning of call and when asked the name later in the conversation was given something different).
Being told they as a favor could not refund the insurance charges which I had not said I wanted but as a favor could refund partial in 24-48 hours, not, to you have to talk to a different area about the deposit which also told me they would get back to me in 24-48 hours and if I did not hear anything to call them back. I was given two different numbers which when called turned out to be in Ireland so now I have a long distance charge for that. Today I am being told no complaint filed and no there is a 7-10 day delay in everything and in the meantime my credit card show charges of $611.40.
I used Thrifty in the past several times and did not have a problem but will not use them again nor recommend them to anyone. After reading all of the complaints from customers all complaining of the same issues I think they need to be investigated and a class action lawsuit filed against them. Look at all of the money customers have been overcharged. I am a totally dissatisfied customer and pray someone will do something about all the complaints. I am not giving ratings on any of the areas because one star is too much. Thank you.

The worst rental car company we have ever used. We filled the tank on our 2017 Kia Sedona the night prior to leaving (have gas receipts to verify) but Thrifty/Dollar wants to charge us $49.99 for using 5 gallons of gas to simply travel the 24.1 mile drive to the Orlando airport at $9.99 per gallon. One gallon maybe but 5 in a vehicle that gets 25 highway mpg. Also never once mentioned a "convenience fee" of $54 for picking it up at the airport... Seriously. Never a mention at drop off, during a quote. Their check in attendant looked the car over and told us to our face there would be no further charges. Complete scam. Steer clear and don't believe a thing they say. If the rates are cheaper, they make up for it in unscrupulous ways. Never again will we rent from Thrifty/Dollar.

I had prepaid voucher from Rentalcars.com UK. So I told the Thrifty staff member in Orlando airport specifically that I DID NOT want any extras. When signing agreement, I trusted Thrifty that what I was signing was free of extras. Returning to UK I discover they had charged me over £100 for premium roadside insurance. I have been renting cars in the States since the 1980's and this is the first time I have been deliberately ripped off. Never again will I use Thrifty and I believe they should be accountable by law for fraud.

I was also a victim of extra charges. I rented a car with points through my credit card. When I booked it I refused insurance and when we picked it up my husband refused the insurance. They asked my husband to sign the paperwork and gave him the keys. He assumed he was just signing what he had already purchased. We later got charged $300 ($28 a day for 11 days) for insurance. Apparently the paper he signed included extra insurance. When we called to inquire we were told we should have read the contract. We NEVER purchase insurance for rental car. We also feel ripped off, give those unacceptable sales tactics. I won't ever rent from Thrifty again.

I booked my airline tickets and a car rental through OneTravel. Upon arriving in Oklahoma city car rental center, I presented my car booking at the Thrifty counter. The girl at the counter said she can't rent us the already booked car because my card had debit on it. My card is a debit/credit. Now Thrifty's policy is that they can take a debit card pertaining they take a credit check. So basically I was left without having a car and a $281 rental fee turned out to cost me $776 from another car rental agency. This was not right. I felt all along that she DIDN'T want me to have the car. I suspect that they work for commission because the other agency charged $95 for a counter fee. I wrote to OneTravel to see if they stand behind their car rental agreement. Never responded back. I felt really scammed. I will NEVER AGAIN book with either.
