They did not have the car I reserved and paid for. Was told it would take five minutes. After 30 minutes and no communication from anyone I asked for the Manager and interestingly enough the car showed up a few minutes later. Clerk in booth where I picked up the car was about as friendly as a North Korean dictator! I was never given the opportunity to decline the collision damage waiver and instead was sold some meaningless extra coverage that I thought was in place of the collision damage waiver. They really want to sell you all kind of extra stuff but other than that their communication was very cold and dismissive. Never again will Dollar be my choice.

I booked a car online for an 11 am pick up from Jacksonville, FL airport - my flight arrived early and when I went to the Dollar / Thrifty rental desk at 10:15 they informed me that if I wanted a car before 11 am which is what I booked the car for then I would need to upgrade and the fee would be an additional $14.00 per day for a mid size car or an additional $20.00 per day for a full size car. They informed me that my car was not available until 11 am and the only way to get one 45 minutes early was to upgrade. The customer service representative was very nasty and rude during this time. I declined the upgrade and chose to wait the 45 minutes - while waiting I walked through the garage where the cars were kept - there were plenty of economy size cars sitting in the parking spots and no other customers picking these vehicles up.

Once I returned to the counter to pay for my car, which they would not let me do when I was at the counter early - the customer service representative that I had dealt with earlier walked away from the counter and refused to serve me so I had to wait for the person in front of me to complete their transaction. Once I went to pick the car up, sure enough it was one of the cars I had seen when I walked through the garage while waiting. The car was full of dents, dings and scratches, along with damaged interior fabric. When I went to the kiosk to ask for someone to come over and make note of the damage I was handing a form with an image of a car and told to mark the damage myself and to turn the report in when I returned the vehicle. Again very rude customer service and very unprofessional. I will never rent from this company again!!!

Unhappy/upset went to Dollar Rent A Car where we were greeted with smile. Ask, "how can we help you" by Briana. She had a smile and helped us get a van in a matter of seconds... apologized for our inconvenience [other company]. Very happy with my customer service.

I was to take a moment to relay to you the terrible experience we had at the O’Hare airport Dollar Rent A Car counter. We used Rentalcars.com to book our trip (we will never do this again), and we were not surprised by a few additional charges, however, our quote from Rentalcars.com was 124.00 and our total at the counter was $396. This is a huge difference. We were told a part of this charge was because we were late picking the car up and our rate had been changed to a weekend rate because of this. So we had the car for a smaller amount of time, still spanning a weekend, and yet we were charged more.

In addition to that, it was a Thursday evening (we had expected to pick up the car Thursday afternoon). The clerk went over to ask her manager if there was anything she could do and the manager gave us a disgusted look and then waved the clerk away. We also paid daily for a child seat and addition driver which we had put on our reservation with Rentalcars.com and were told was reflected in our original quote. Once we finally agreed to pay, because we had no choice, we got on the road. We were given no instruction about the I-pass and it was left open. We drove through three tolls, trying to pay cash, but the bars kept lifting for us and we couldn't figure out why, once we figured it out we had already racked up $45 in charges. I tried to call the counter at O’Hare to ask about it and got no answer.

All in all, the car was great, the original price was great, but unfortunately, the customer service and undisclosed prices will prevent us from ever using Dollar Rent A Car again. In addition, I plan to leave many reviews urging other people not to use Dollar either. We were not the only customers in the office who were frustrated, there was a mother and a few children in tears next to us trying to figure out why they were being charged so much as well. In addition to all of this, when we walked in the clerks were all talking to each other while helping customers, using curse words in front of children, and taking breaks to go make coffee.

I have rented cars all around the world including many cities in the USA but this was the most unpleasant. By the time I reached Dollar at Boston I had been on the go for around 13 hours and my internal clock was set at 03:30 hours so I was tired and not ready for the terrible customer service they provided. The staff were all rude and surly treating any question I asked dismissively like dealing with a petulant child. They informed me that the tolls were now electronic and that I needed an E-ZPass at $10 a day ($160 total).

When I told them I didn't want one as I didn't expect to use toll roads I was given no other option and told basically no pass no car. He then tried to sell me a number of extras I.e. upgrade, insurance, breakdown etc and when I refused all these he almost threw the electronic signature device they use at me and demanded I sign, but when I asked him to confirm there were no extras and requested clear information for what I was signing for he got really annoyed. He was unable to explain why I had been charged $14.66 (concession fee recovery) and a further tax of $9.17, I still have no idea what this is. As it turns out I did use the E-ZPass, to go through the Sumner Tunnel and then for two days on the i90 totaling at maximum $42 so they basically scammed me out of $118.

Never again will I use Dollar. They are shysters. However the real villains here to me are the state governments, that give car hire companies the opportunity to rob their customers yet another way. I have since found out that according to Dollars T&C's I did not have to accept the E-ZPass (best inform your staff). However they will charge your credit card, the maximum toll plus $15 admin fee for every toll you use. Thanks guys what great customer service.

Reserved vehicle through Orbitz. $116.71 for the rental period ($34.96 for fees& taxes) and $40.00 total for insurance. Picked up car from Dollar/Hertz in Lawton Oklahoma airport. I could not download my reservation and they wouldn't provide a copy. After driving the vehicle to my destination, I reviewed the rental cost and saw they had charged me over $51.00 per day for insurance or over a $100.00 per day for the car rental rate ($336 for 3 days)! I tried contacting them at all numbers available and even called the 800 number for customer billing complaints. The customer service people were less than helpful and said I needed to return to the airport to resolve this issue.

I feel the Dollar/Hertz company used bait and switch tactics on the fees quoted and the actual fees charged. I will stick with Enterprise car rental and never use a third party to reserve my vehicle! I haven't yet resolved this with the car company at this time, but I will fight this issue once I return to the airport and or through my credit card company rights! What a crock to pull this on customers! I will pass this on to all the people I encounter so that it doesn't happen to anyone else. Millions of dollars spent on advertisement to gain customers and they pull this stunt! Absolutely despicable!

He told me he couldn't change it but the person outside could. That person said that it would get fixed when I returned the car. I only had the choice of one car. I returned the car on Tuesday before they were open so there was no one to talk to. I got charged a penalty fee for returning early. They did fix it for me but I still paid a higher amount renting for less days than was quoted to me. I will not rent from Dollar Rent A Car again.

I declined the Easy Pass option on my rental car for my biennial college pickup and drop off for my youngest as I prefer to pay cash. There are two tolls for my trip. One is $1 and one is $15. I drove up through a cash/Easy Pass toll lane for each toll and paid the required amount in cash. Weeks later, I received a bill from Dollar Rent A Car for about $69 dollars. When I called and told them that I had declined the Easy Pass option as I pay in cash, The customer service representative said transponder in the car had been turned on and that the "car" automatically records a toll fee when the "car" passes through.

I again explained that I had paid cash at the tolls, CS rep said the transponder must have been turned on. I explained that I didn't turn it on and in fact don't even know where it's located in the car nor how to turn it on. CS rep repeated that it must have been on as fees were automatically recorded. Therefore, it seems, since either a previous Dollar customer or a Dollar representative had previously turned on the transponder, I'm stuck to double pay both tolls (My cash outlay of $16 for the two tolls plus Dollar's charge of $69 for an Easy Pass purchase.)

AS A COURTESY the representative said that they would give me a one time only $15 refund. I am now personally out $70 due a service agent not checking to be sure transponders in a rental car are turned off after each rental. I have used Dollar for rentals over a 15 year period. Now looks like I'll have to begin renting from a nearby Hertz.

Do yourself a favor and choose another company for your car rental needs. The people at Dollar do not care enough to provide quality customer service particularly at the SEA-TAC Airport location, and be very careful about making a reservation online.

I had an online reservation with Dollar car company at Orlando International Airport. I was quoted a price of $69 for 4 days. Was pretty happy with that. When I got to the airport to pick car up I was ask for my credit card and driver's license. Was never told my final price would be $220 until I saw it on the contract. Nevertheless I just went along with it because it was late at night and tired and didn't want worry too much about it.

I got the car Sunday night at 11:40 pm. Was due to return it at 8 am Thursday morning. I called Wednesday night try to get the car for one more day. I was told that would cost me $220 more to keep it. I asked about being charged for 4 days but didn't have the privilege of keeping the car for 4 full days which would mean 11:40 pm Thursday night. They said they couldn't do anything for me because I had initially stated a return of 8:00 am Thursday morning. What made matters worse is I was told I have 29 mins and 59 seconds after 8 am to return the car to avoid late penalties so I paid for a day but only had use just to take it back to them at the airport to avoid late penalties. They are crooks. I learned my lesson. Do they think I would consider doing business with them anymore or recommending them to anyone? Never ever. They are the worst of all.

What a shock it was to receive a bill for $59.99 for using a PlatePass - which ran up $4.00 in tolls. We thought we were supposed to use the PlatePass for our tolls! We thought it was convenient and went with the price of the car. Who in their right mind would knowingly choose to pay $11.99 a day for this service? They claim I declined to have this service. Isn't it easy for them to claim this - as how can you prove it? There is something wrong with a system that allows this type of thing to happen. THIS IS A SCAM AND BUYER BEWARE! No wonder there was no one in the Dollar Rent A Car line. They all knew better! Shame on you rental car companies who are not forthcoming in charges!

I rented a car from Dollar Rental company at Century Boulevard near Los Angeles Airport on Sunday 9/10/17 by 4 pm. I made the reservation via Priceline website and my reservation stated on their website that I am reserved to have Nissan Altima or similar which is considered as a full size sedan in the rental company.

Upon my arrival at their office to pick up the car, the representative told me that I reserved a compact car not full size car, with his statements I suspected some false and deceitful information given to their customers. I even told the representative that my reservation showed that I am renting a full size vehicle for $138 per week (Sun-Sat). The representative later told me he will upgrade me to the full size car for free base on the same internet rate that I chose. He also told me that the insurance for the full size car is $17 per day, even after I told him that I do not need insurance since my credit card covers insurance for any rental car that I am using.

At this point, I asked the representative another question, "What if I decide to return the car few days before the due date, will they reduce my charge?" He answered YES because they will only charge me for the days I used their car and my total bill will reduce from $243 to the number of days I used the car. I used their car for three days and decided to return it because I was not satisfied with the car, I was billed $383.00 on my credit card after 3 days. I returned their car and when I asked why such a fraudulent charge on my card if I only used the car for three days, they told me that it is because the car was returned earlier therefore the rate I was billed before $243 is not going to apply.

I explained to the representative that their representative gave me a false information and they should return my money to my credit card. Please people should stay away from Dollar/Thrifty Rental car because they are deceitful and fraudulent and they are only after how to milk people's money on their credit card once you drive their car off their lot.

When asked if I could pay the toll company directly I was told NO. This is how they punish unsuspecting drivers who are not familiar with an area such as Dallas, TX that has tolls everywhere. I would have gladly paid my $2 toll but to add on an extra $30 is wrong. I will never rent from them again!!!

Not very sensitive to the situation. Wasn't my fault, was a major disaster that happened. Also would charge me 800 to drop off a closer location. The first man I spoke with hung up on me when I told him that he wasn't being very helpful in a time of emergency. I think this is a poor way to run a business. Although I have no complaint about Dollar vehicle my dealing with their employees has convinced me that their policy is to fraudulently sign you up for additional services you do not need or want and then provide no recourse of fixing the problem, while lying and prevaricating in the process. I have made a third party reservation via for their vehicle for 8 days to take my family on vacation from Las Vegas to San Francisco via Death Valley and Yosemite National Park. My estimated rate was about $200 and I expected to pay about $300 with an addition of all the taxes and service charges. I ended up paying $670 and this is how it had happened.

While being processed in Las Vegas by a very polite employee I was asked what seemed to be an innocent question: Do you want a basic or comprehensive insurance? Since no other option was presented to me and assuming that basic means just liability insurance I have verbally selected the basic one. Then I was asked to sign an empty electronic form and was handed over a package which I, being a trusting individual, didn't even review at the spot. Several hours later I have opened the package and was astonished to realize that I apparently agreed to pay for $26.88 per day of Loss damage waiver which I didn't want and $8.99 per day of Premium Road Service which I didn't need since I have this service from other providers.

Since it was already too late I have called them the next morning. They told me that I was to go to one of their corporate offices to resolve the dispute. When I had complained that I had different vacation plans they told me that I would be able to resolve my dispute when returning a car in San Francisco. However my attempt to do so in both San Francisco car return facility and by calling their customer service later on were rebuffed with the statements that since I have signed the contract I have no recourse. They refused to provide me with any compensation and practically didn't care of what I thought about their obviously fraudulent conduct. Bottom line is never to trust any Dollar Rent a Car employee. I do not know what their official claim is but they are not there to help you. Rather their goal is to rely on your trust to defraud you from as much money as possible. I will never deal with them again and will not recommend anybody to do so.

I rented a vehicle with Dollar for a family vacation. All started good. At check in for Dollar the guy was friendly until he kept trying to get me to upgrade to a bigger car, I repeatedly said no. We finally got our car. Perfect size, clean, a few scuffs and dents, but a good size car. We went about our vacation perfectly fine. No problems, complied with all rules of the road and paid all toll charges upfront. Anyhow when returning the car at the end of our vacation the lady representing Dollar scanned the car with a handheld device and said everything is fine, no outstanding fees or fines and she moved on. Now 3 weeks later I receive a letter in the post from ATS with a notice of a fine and of course the profitable admin fee for a $1 toll I apparently didn't pay, which I did. They told me If I don't respond they will automatically charge me, considering I received the letter on the day they charged me.

What made me contact them to detest this is the fact the tolls were paid and that they have not provided me with photographic evidence of the vehicle passing the tolls without paying. They must have some kind of evidence to support their case. So I look forward to hear from them to find out what rubbish they try to pile me off with. Also why did the rental lady tell me there was no fines, bunch of scam liars. I will never use Dollar again and will definitely not recommend them.

Dollar Car Rental San Antonio Airport Location and Customer Serv - In June I started training for a new job. I had been out of work 3 months so my income was limited. I rented a car from Dollar. Prepaid for the car on what I later found out was Carhire although I was on Dollar site. My CC was billed 127.18, when I arrived at the counter I informed the agent I had prepaid for the car. She asked for my car. Processed the whole thing and then said my card was declined. I asked how can it be declined if I already paid for it. She said I needed to have an additional 350.00 over the rental available on my card to rent the car and since I didn't have that amount on my card I had to use my debit card to hold the car. I was charged 256.73 for that rental on 06/04-06/11.

That following week I had to run to San Antonio so I called the 800 customer service number and no one knew could locate that policy stated. The agent may have misunderstood. Someone would get back to me. I returned to the same location on 06/11 and this time I was told the same story regarding the 350.00. I was charged a whopping 418.05 on my debit card and 107.03 by Carhire for a 6 day rental of a compact car. I was quoted a 247.05 which is still too much. When I called to complain I was offered 75 back. The third rental cost me 06/25-06/30 279.29. Each time I requested a compact car as it was the cheapest and the rental was from Sunday-Friday with car returned no later than 3 or 4pm. I'm filling a complaint every I can so no one is over charged like this again. They owe me almost 800.00. I have receipts for all of my transactions.

I will say one positive thing about one of their other locations in McAllen Texas. I rented from that site the first week of August. I requested a compact car. Explained I didn't want additional coverage again. I requested a compact car from Sunday to Friday and my total was only 191.08. What a difference in prices right. If anyone can help me I would truly appreciate it, as the wife of a disabled veteran I need every penny I earn.

You will save tons of money. You also don't have to buy coverage. Collision coverage on your policy will cover an accident, but if you use a credit card some will pay your deductible except for admin, loss of use and depreciation. Your insurance company will more than likely not pay those charges. Do your research.

I pre-reserved online and they clearly outlined my price. Upon arrival, they told me they had "no more vehicles of that type," and that they could upgrade me for somewhere around $30 more/day. Frustrated but not overly upset, I agreed. Turns out, that "upgrade" included over $150 in additional fees that were never made known to me, a ridiculous surcharge fee, and ADDITIONAL fee for being under $25 (despite that fee already being added once in my reservation), a license fee, and an additional fee for "parking the car across the street" where they specifically told me to - They didn't mention they share it with another company and expect me to pay for that too.

Not to mention the lady talked faster than an auctioneer and dragged on forever. I was quite confident I had made out everything she said. Point being, these people will rob you. To my observation and my in person experience with the characters and roles that are being played with this Dollar Rental Cars scam; located at 201 N Collins Street Arlington Texas. The process of this particular SCAM that was practiced on me came in stages starting with ** & ** (tries to give you much higher prices to see if you are slipping) and I happen to catch it every single multiple time they tried it with me. Then ** starts the false accusing of wanting to drive those unsuitable cars for free; and I hadn't missed a payment. Then I went to make a payment one of these afternoons during this process and the mental mind brainwashing technique starts. Then they try to convince you that you missed a payment knowing that they are bold faced liars. They are very bold with this technique and when they see that I wasn't falling for it they will drop the subject for a few days and then come at you again.

They get bolder by telling you that you agreed to something like as was said to me (quote unquote) ** said to me "Oh you don't remember telling me that I could take a hundred dollars off your deposit" then called me and asked me if she could charge my card and I told her "NO for what I don't owe you and when my payment is due I will bring a money order" which I did; quote- and I told her "Now you know we have never had that conversation ever. You are lying..." She leaves the office and then ** takes up the SCAM. At this point I knew that this was a real problem. I also observed the level of comfort that these actors had in this vicious SCAM so common sense tells me that this is something that they do on a regular basis.

So after those criminals kept on with their foolish brainwashing tactics I was really wanting out of this rental car scam and I was already sure that I would have difficulty getting any of my deposit back or any of the multiple times I was aware of overpayment. ** clearly stated that it would go back into my account but he was just lying. ** was never intending on refunding my deposit. Then the grand finale which came I had a flat and their roadside service said it would be at least an hour before they could get out to put the spare tire on the vehicle which had been wrecked, the bumper fell off. It had multiple problems of scrapping so I had requested another car for several days and never got it 'till 4 weeks later after the flat.

So on Saturday I returned the Kia but before I went up to Dollar Rental Car I called, talked with ** and asked him how much do I need to make the money order for, he said "Oh don't worry about that." He just wanted me to come up there. He had something to show me and when I arrived he had a calendar with the payments I had given him by money order and what they had collected from my checking account which turned out that I DID NOT owe Dollar Rental Car nothing but for the days that I was about to extend. I had every one of my receipts and current bank statements. At this point I had been knowing that I wouldn't ever do any sort of business with this company again.

However I was still in need of a car. I went ahead and switched cars to a Focus. In the time I drove off the lot the car started making all kinds of sounds and noises, wobbling from the right front tire. The car jerked as if it were a cartoon; I immediately called the Dollar Rental Car and of course they did not answer at about 1:50 p.m. They close at 2:00 p.m. So by the time I made it through the traffic they were clearly gone. But for the record I had agreed to place $119.19 in the night drop since he would not accept cash which I had dropped most all the payments in that night dropped. One day they triggered the alarm off claiming that they didn't get the money order but finally called me back to say they found it. Another tactic another oppressing delay. So the Focus never got any better. I was too afraid to get on the freeway in that Focus. It was not safe. Then the lights would flash.

The car wouldn't start from time to time so at that point I realized that these heathen criminals knew that Focus was too unsafe to drive although they let me drive off in it. They new the car would never make it back up there to drop the payment off before 7:30 a.m. on the following Monday morning. I am under the impression that they programmed the car and they clearly stated they could shut those cars down from the office. Correction ** stated they could shut the car down from office. The service from this company is a disgrace and I was honored to let them know what a sickening disgrace they are to try and SCAM people out of extra money. The worst thing is they have persuaded themselves that they are in the right; totally deceptive abusive weak mind controlling technique compulsive liars and their greed is totally controlling them. This has been such a sad experience.

My heart goes out to those who has experienced this type of abuse and was led to believe such fabrications from this company. There is more... Etc. I am also looking to form some type of sting. They need to be stopped before they cause disasters in our cities. This is intolerable and this type of behavior makes our cities more unsafe to live. They literally could do this to the wrong person. Law enforcement need to step up to the plate!!! RATINGS -100% The original queen of Generation X has spoken.

I had all the necessary docs too. Now Cartrawler won't refund the money, and doesn't respond to email either. Dollar and Cartrawler are crooks. I warn anybody not to pre-pay with them.

I want to report a serious complaint. On the 10th of July we arrived at Miami Airport. We were thrilled for the vacation we waited for years. I saved about 3 years to be able to afford this vacation, and when I saw you were offering a car for that price I was very excited. We arrived and were asked to go to the third floor of the Miami airport to go and get our car. I was glad to see the Dollar stand whom I rented and paid a car from back in January!! After waiting for a while I had a dark haired man at the counter. I gave him all the forms I had, and he said with a raised voice, “JUST GIVE ME THE FORMS I ASK FOR, THIS IS NO JUNK YARD.” I laughed, because I thought he was telling a joke but he was not. He filled out every paper, and then he asked me for my credit card. “THIS ONE IS DECLINED” he shouted, “GIVE ANOTHER ONE.” I told him I don't have another one. “THEN I CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR YOU” HE TOLD.

I told him that there was nothing wrong with the card. I proved him by pulling money from an ATM counter standing next to him. He shouted, “NOT MY PROBLEM, I AM NO BANK.” The other people that were around told us that we didn't have to accept this behaviour of that man. I asked him if he could call the Visa Company or at least give me the phone number to call. He told me, “I am not the yellow pages, go away. You are not in Belgium, you are in America.” He shouted, “I'm Moroccan and I have to obey USA rules, you are racist,” he said. He assumed all Belgians are racists and could not help me out. I finally went on an internet site and called Visa.

They told me NOTHING was wrong with my card and asked the DOLLAR employee on the phone but he refused. I did not get my car and had to go to another company to rent a car. This cost me 2150 dollars!!! to rent a car with Sixt, with the Visa card that was "declined" at Dollar Rent A Car. 2150 dollars I need to spend on my vacation. If I can't be helped I will contact Visa again as they asked me. I was left at Miami airport with 3 crying children, a wife that was nearly crying, an employee who shouted like I was going to kill him and no car I paid for. I'm here in Florida till 30th of July with a 2150 dollars less budget because I had to rent another car. Please advise what to do.

So before going to Florida and renting a car I did the research and realized I'd need to purchase a Sunpass sticker at a local Walgreens and register my payment info online with the details of the rental vehicle so I wouldn't be charged a 15.00 administrative fee for each toll. The Sunpass is billed as a transponder that works with all Florida tolls. In the Orlando vicinity, there's another toll company called E-pass. Sunpass is supposed to work in an E-Pass toll. But if the car is already registered by the rental car company as a pay by plate E-pass car, then that supersedes Sunpass. And guess what - Dollar registers all their cars as pay by plate E-pass. Therefore even if you have a Sunpass transponder it doesn't matter. They're going to charge you the toll plus 15.00. I thought I had planned the tolls carefully; but you can't always anticipate a well-organized scam.

I was quite surprised when I received my 16.00 bill. When I called E-pass, a very friendly customer service agent simply laughed and confirmed the scam. E-pass is essentially colluding with Dollar in their hoodwinking of customers. The E-pass agent explained that if I go to Florida again, I have to ask the Dollar agent to take the car off pay by plate before installing my own Sunpass sticker. Lesson learned - never rent from Dollar again! Oh - and they didn't have the vehicle I reserved either and had no remorse in shoving a family of four into a compact car. Nice company - may all its corporate suits be scammed similarly one day - karma!

I assume I must of signed off on the extra driver fee without seeing the charges. Dollar is one of those that charges extra for 2nd driver and I had always used Budget before who do not charge extra. Dollar advertises low fees and then gets you when you rent from them. Anyway I am out $350 total for charges I did not expect nor told about at the counter. Totally unethical company!

Picture this, I was in Yellowstone National Park at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone (Artists Point) a beautiful location on a family vacation which had been in planning for over 2 years. A man in the parking lot says to me, "Hey buddy your tire is going flat." He was correct. I open the trunk of the rental car and guess what? No spare tire! I immediately call Dollar Roadside Assistance who tell me to try the inflatable cigarette lighter driven pump provided with the car. I do but the tire is punctured and I tell Dollar Roadside Assistance this fact. They make a call or two and then call me back and say, well Mr. ** we cannot get a tow company to come into Yellowstone National Park so you are on your own. Can you believe it? I call 911 and the Park Service sends a tow truck to the location. Thank God, I had service to this location in YNP.

The driver of the tow truck looks the tire over and tells me that the tire is not patchable due to the extended mileage and excessive tread wear on the tire. So, I must be towed to West Yellowstone, MT to purchase a new tire. It is now 9 p.m., myself and family are exhausted, so I take the tow. The tow from the YNP to West Yellowstone costs $337.50. At this point, the car still has the same flat tire and cannot be driven.

The next morning, I begin to work with Dollar Customer Service who simply acts as a liaison between myself and the branch manager of the Bozeman, MT rental location. They are no help and are uncooperative. I call four different garages in the small town of West Yellowstone and none of the garages have a tire in stock to fit the odd ball tire on the rental car. It is interesting to note that the car has two different brands of tires on it, none of which have good tread.

At this point, I have a rental car with a flat tire which has no spare and cannot be patched due to tread wear which is so severe that it cannot be patched and then run safely (note: this is not due to location of the puncture but the low level of tread on the tire). Now, I must have the car towed from West Yellowstone to Bozeman, MT to exchange the car. I contact a tow company and make all the arrangements myself because Dollar simply washed their hands of the situation. Tow number two costs another $425.00 bringing the total tow charges to $762.50.

I get the car back to Bozeman for exchange which is handled very poorly. First, the girl at the counter asks me if I filled the tank back up on the car or I will need to pay and starts to bill me for the punctured tire. The manager does step in and waives the gas fill fee and tire replacement fee and credits me $168.75 of the first tow fee.

The story only gets better from here. I go to the lot to pick up my next rental car and open the trunk... you guessed it... no spare tire. I return to the pickup counter where I am treated like dirt and refuse the car. Finally, the manager walks with me to the lot and we open the trunks of cars until we find a car with a spare. I then depart for West Yellowstone to pick up my family who has been stuck at the hotel as I find new transportation.

I am out of pocket $593.75 for towing charges for the two tows all because the rental car did not have a spare... a fact that was never disclosed to me. On top of that the tire on the car could not be patched due to the excessive tread wear and the safety concerns associated with the tire. Two different mechanics looked at the tire and informed me of this. The rental car had such odd tires that a tire could not be purchased because a special order would need placed.

Almost two weeks later and Dollar has not responded to my open complaint case after many calls. They tell me that complaints are worked in the order they come in so just get in line and wait. This says enough about the issues with Dollar. They will rent unreliable vehicles with safety concerns and when they have problems they will do very little to help. They make you feel as if you are the problem and are uncooperative to help at best. The saddest thing is that my family lost 15% of our vacation time as I worked 2 days on an issue that could have been resolved quickly if only the rental car had a spare tire.

Take my counsel, NEVER RENT FROM DOLLAR RENT A CAR, they are not a good company. I can only hope that my experience is a abnormality but from my wait time for resolution, I would say DOLLAR HAS MANY ISSUES. I can only hope that consumers walk away from renting from this company and that they eventually are eliminated from the market.

Rented a car from Dollar for one week in July, I provided a credit card for authorising various charges including toll charges. The man at the desk asked, produced a map and asked me where I would be travelling - he said that $71.98 would cover all toll charges. Shortly after returning I received 4 toll violation notices totalling more than $100 and an admin fee notice from Dollar for the tolls for $60. After emailing Dollar and getting nowhere I phoned them and the nice lady has reduced the admin fee to $30 - so I am only getting ripped off to the tune of $30 - I wonder how many of these they charge a week, it's got to be easier than renting cars out.

As I didn't find out about this until I am in the UK, I am stuck with the costs - you can't deal with these people over the phone - they have your credit card details and they are going to use them. This has not only put me off Dollar but driving in the USA and possibly ever visiting the USA again, they really are a bunch of cowboys!!

My bill ballooned from $968.99 for an initial 1 month rental, to a TOTAL CHARGES $1621.63 USD because I returned the vehicle about 3 days early. This is totally unacceptable. I was expecting my bill to decrease and be pro rated, as I am accustomed to in other countries. This is the 1st time I have ever seen this practice by any rental car company. I don't have this extra amount to pay for a shortened time of using your car. I had an emergency, but still, this is gouging at the very least, and beyond that also. This is unfair business practice to the public, who is unaware that these unusual liabilities even exist. These extra charges were not revealed to me by your agent, even when asked to inform me what the adjusted rate would be.

The agent couldn't and didn't advise me, but instead, wanted to pass the buck to someone else, when I had her as my representative for information dealing with my rental agreement. And though I signed your contract, this is a misdeed on your part to me, the consumer, to increase my bill in this manner. Please adjust it, prorated for the unused days of the vehicle. I absolutely refuse to pay more than what I signed for. Please escalate this matter to your CEO office as this matter needs to be resolve, and the public needs to be warned of the stunts you are capable of doing. Thanks. Be warned that this company in the US is trying to rip off the public. I have rented with other companies before and never had a situation where my bill increase because I returned my car early. This needs to be legally pursued to stop this kind of assault! Beware of Dollar rental car- also under Avis Rental.

Our family van unexpectedly broke down just as we pulled into Norfolk, VA heading to VA Beach for vacation. The work was extensive & therefore needed a rental car to get home - (a 4 1/2 hour drive back to PA). We only needed the rental car for 24 hours & notified of its return to another Dollar Rental location closer to home. Bad News: There are only a few Dollar Rental locations within 2 hours from our home in PA limiting our ability to easily return the vehicle. Only 1 Dollar Rental location (BWI Airport) within 2 hours from our home accepted & allowed the return to an alternate location without monetary penalization.

The return transaction needed to be completed before 11 am to avoid having to pay for both Saturday & Sunday since they (& everyone else I called) closed for the weekend at 12 Noon. It was almost another 3 hours round trip on the road to BWI to make the return. It would be nice if more places existed to assist those who need rentals for such circumstances & then increase their hours of operation. This would assist people who need weekend rentals & those who don't & shouldn't be charged for extended unnecessary & costly rental fees. How is that fair?

Don't choose to rent the "mystery" choice that costs a little extra but guarantees a vehicle with equal or greater space because the Rental location can only provide vehicles they have in stock. I fell for the "mystery" car choice, paid extra & was given a compact car for 4 (even though they advertise it fits 5 comfortably- NOT), that I could have rented for $20 less. When I questioned the agent at the counter, she said she couldn't delete & redo my original transaction & made no apologies. She said to pull up my email confirmation & read the fine print. Hmmm...

On the flip side: my Great News: Dollar Rental allows returns to alternate locations (read the fine print) without monetary penalizations. It was by far the cheapest choice (by hundreds of dollars). There wasn't a line & it was a quick transaction at the counter to claim our reservation. I took a chance with a company that had the least amount of stars & the worst reviews & I guess at the end of the day, it was the best choice for us because it was the cheapest. I hope this review helps others make better car rental company decisions. Best of luck!

Second incident: I actually returned the car a day early and they were going to charge me to bring it back "not within the specified contract time." With several people in line behind me I loudly exclaimed I would keep the car another day rather than pay the early return fee and magically the agent waived the fee again.

Third incident: While in Colorado I drove on toll roads that had no toll booth so you had no choice but to incur the fees billing to you by mail. I booked a 4-day rental for Dollar Rental Car from DCA Airport in Washington, DC. I live in the area but needed the car for a weekend getaway trip as I don't own a car. Dollar had the cheapest rates so I figured, why not just go with what's cheapest, they're all the same anyway right? I'd never rented a car before so I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I don't have a credit card so I paid for the booking online, well in advance of my reservation dates, with my debit card, using the pay-now rate, which was a lot cheaper than the pay-at-the-gate rate. It was only $131 for 4 days, so I will grant them that their rates are quite low.

When I got to the airport this past weekend, it turns out that, as of 2017, if you book a rental car from an airport location in the US, with a debit card, you need to also present at the desk your return flight information and 2 forms of ID (aka drivers license and passport). I had neither of these things since I hadn't flown into this airport and I was not anticipating needing my passport for a domestic road trip. Still, I assumed I could just transfer the charge to my girlfriend's credit card (who was traveling with me) and get my debit card refunded. Wrong. The gate agent informed me that I was not able to do that because the pay-now option which I had used to book was non-refundable. And, because I didn't have the necessary paperwork for a debit-card purchase, we would have to re-book at a considerable cost increase. This is unbelievable to me.

The gate agent showed me that, buried in Section 6 of the Terms & Conditions fine print, is indeed a section that states that debit cards essentially cannot be used for roadtrippers like me trying to pick up a rental car from the nearest airport to their house. But I think this information needs to be flashed in big bright letters all over their booking website once you select an airport pickup and start to enter a debit card as your payment. It should show up before you pay, not buried in the fine print of the receipt you get after you've already paid. But of course it doesn't. Because that would mean Dollar doesn't get to charge you twice for being dumb enough to think that booking a rental car would work the same as buying just about anything else in the world online.

Everyone at Dollar Rent-a-Car I've spoken to about this seemed to almost get pleasure out of the fact that they get to keep my $130 even though I didn't get to use their rental car. The gate agent told us he could not authorize any sort of refund but that I could call their customer support and try. The representative I spoke with on the phone referred my case to a case manager who, he informed me, would take up to 20 business days and then issue a decision via email, leaving me (presumably) with no one to contact if I want to appeal. Never once did I get even an apology for their website being so cleverly designed to trick someone into paying money for a service they would never actually be able to use.

So, a warning to anyone who is thinking of using Dollar to pickup a rental car from an airport: don't use a debit card. And really, just don't use them at all. We ultimately walked over and went with Payless and they were at least marginally better since they accept debit cards without needing any collateral. I will update this post if I do receive a refund but I'm not holding my breath.

Rented a full size car from Dollar from Jul 15 to Jul 20. I made the reservation online. I'm assuming the rental was managed through a consolidator. Be that as it may, you can see from my initial request that I did NOT want to add any additional insurance, i.e. Collision Damage insurance. When I picked up the car, I was very specific about fuel recharge penalties as well as the fact that I absolutely did not want ANY additional insurance as my credit card and personal automobile insurance will cover damages and this was confirmed by the card carrier and insurance carrier. Again, regardless, it was my choice as to whether or not accept any additional insurance. The rental agent coerced me very STRONGLY into accepting the FPO charge because "gas prices in California were higher than what Dollar charged" and told me to bring the car back as "empty as possible."

Having flown for 6 hours on little sleep I was unaware that I would not be refunded for any unused gas left on the tank. This is clearly a very deceptive practice on the part of the Dollar agent and it this fact should have been explained to me. Additionally, I was adamant about the additional insurance and the rental agent assured me that I could waive any additional insurance. Yes he charged me $85 for LDW. Isn't CDW that same thing??? and if I originally submitted the online request to NOT PURCHASE collision damage insurance, why was I charged? I had to leave immediately for a wedding in Santa Barbara and when I arrived I called Dollar to complain about this error but was told that since the contact was already active, I would have to wait until I return the car. Again, your rental agent was very deceptive in the charges that were applied.

I showed him a copy of the online agreement: Summary of Charges (Rental car prices are in USD) Weekly Rate (1 x 215.85): $215.85, Subtotal: $215.85, Taxes and Fees: $72.17, Amount Due at Counter: $288.02. and asked how did the charge of $288 now go to nearly $450? He double talked me and in my state and need to get to my destination, I was in no condition to argue or look for another agency.

Again I am going to repeat that the agent was very deceptive and did not explain any details now expose the fact that I was being charged an additional $85 for LDW after I explicitly told him countless times I DO NO ELECT ANY ADDITIONAL INSURANCE. I will likely never rent from your company again. I've always had positive experiences in the past with Dollar and have always told others that Dollar is the place to select a rental car from, but after this experience, I can honestly say that I would greatly hesitate suggesting anyone to rent a car from Dollar.

When we went to pick up the car in Orlando, there was a huge line and only a couple of agents, so we had to wait an inordinate amount of time with two young kids. By the time we got to the agent we were ready to just get the car and go. Unfortunately, our agent could not speak English very well so we struggled just to understand what she was trying to offer us. We rejected the fuel fill-up and agreed to do it ourselves. We also told her we did not want the optional damage coverage. When my husband was handed the contract, he assume he was just accepting the car and that was the end of it. But oh no, the agent had indicated we DID want the damage coverage which turned out to be over $175 for the week.

Did we read the contract? NO, but when I tell someone I don't want something I assume they will not give it to me. To make things worse, when I got my credit card bill, Dollar had also charged over $40 for fuel even though we returned the car with a full tank! So far, they accept no responsibility for handing us a contract we didn't want, and are only refunding part of the fuel charge. Absolutely ridiculous that their agents can hand you anything and bear no responsibility. Will never rent from Dollar/Hertz again and am advising everyone I know not to either. It was a horrible and scary location, we had the driver take us back to the airport and rented from Enterprise and they were wonderful.

A terrible experience. I had a rental confirmation for both price and size. Denver, Colorado. Dollar attempted to charge 3 times the amount and said the type of car reserved was not available. After being laughed at by the desk employee, I stated that we wanted both the price and model that we were quoted. The car offered would not have taken us into the mountains. The entire desk process was inexcusable. The type of car offered was not even on the lot for pickup. Very dishonest way of doing business.

While on a trip to Chicago, everything went well while picking up our rental at the Chicago-O'hare Airport. The Midsize SUV was clean and well equipped and the staff were helpful and pleasant that day. No complaints at all. The problems arose when trying to return the car. My family arrived 2 hours before the flight, as directed (which was 4:30 am) It started to rain... and I mean RAIN - like a monsoon, it was dark and visibility was extremely limited. Lighting outside was very poor as well. Still, I can live with this, rain is expected in Chicago, and it's dark outside the facility... but it's okay.

I went inside to ask where to take the car to return it. Was told to drive around back and a girl would be back there. I walked around the building 3 times, with no awning or coverage at all (which also wasn't that big a deal... it's all good) but did not see a soul anywhere around. There was a little building that had light on, as if it was a little shack they sat in to accept returns... but no person was there. I went back in only to be told, "She's out there. Look in the car back there." Mind you it is a rental car company, there are cars everywhere. I again walked around the building - still raining like CRAZY. After another 2 trips around this little business I see a compact car sitting near the shack that should house a car - return person I assume (with limited lighting around back of the building and absolutely no lights on inside of the car - it's not even running. The ignition is OFF!).

Anyway, as I walk up to the car, still with a monsoon coming down and I am WET TO THE BONE I see someone in the driver's seat of a car. I walk closer to the car, still not sure if it is an employee. I motion for her to roll down the window and she won't. She looks at me like I am crazy and says something thru the door that I can't hear. I yell for her to open the door. I end up standing right on top of the car door and am about to knock on the window when she barely cracks open the door and I ask where to return the car. She yells back for me to drive the car up in the front of her car and just leave the keys in it and she shuts her door. Never does she leave that dry little compact car.

Needless to say, I was livid, freezing cold with water dripping off my nose. I was quite a sight to behold. To say the flight home was uncomfortable with wet jeans, t-shirt (that got completely soaked thru), a heavy, completely wet from top to bottom denim jacket is an understatement. I wouldn't recommend this company ever, at least not at Chicago-O'hare.

I'll keep this as short as possible, but basically we booked a trip to Vegas through Orbitz that included a car rental in our package through Dollar Rent A Car. The woman who assisted us scammed us into buying insurance by saying it was the basic package and presenting it as their lowest option when it was obvious that I didn't want the insurance at all, as my Amex covers it. She then proceeded to tell us that having them fill it with gas when we returned it would cost "almost exactly the same" as filling it ourselves, so I approved that. It turns out that it is $9.99 per gallon to have them fill it! When we returned the car and I got a receipt saying I was being charged $190 for my rental, we took it back to the counter and spoke with the manager. This man proceeded to just recite policy over and over, saying there was no proof of what the original service agent said to us, and that the details were given to us on the original contract we signed.

Like a fool, I did sign their electronic pad without checking the folded up packet of paperwork they handed me, assuming they weren't completely scamming their customers. In addition, he just kept offering me a $100 voucher that I could use with their company in the future (good for a year), which I declined because I would rather eat shards of glass than use this pathetic company again. I immediately called Amex to dispute the charges on the card, which I am hoping they will help me with since I have never disputed a single thing in almost 20 years of having the card. Stay away from these complete scam artists, there is a reason their online reviews are so terrible!

I am extremely upset with Dollar Rental. I love Orbitz and have never had a problem in the past and booked through them. I would strongly suggest that no one uses Dollar Rental for your rental car business reservation. I ended up paying the same amount for the car rental twice because they lie and are untruthful and a scam. I cannot afford 500 dollars for a rental car.

They acted like we didn't pay the reservation and I had my prepaid reservation agreement from Orbitz with me. And had my husband sign the receipt and said it would go on the card then we would get reimbursed when the rental came back. What they had him sign without telling him was the insurance waiver which we told him we didn't need. Insurance which happens to be almost the same charge as the rental car. It is absolutely ridiculous. They took advantage of a family of 5 with 3 little boys. If I would have saw these other reviews before going on my trip to Houston I would have went with someone else for my car rental since the experiences are identical. Dollar Rental does not deserve a rating of 1 either.

Once I heard that, my blood started to boil! I've rented several cars before, and had never experienced a SURPRISE deposit with credit check.

I asked if I could cancel the reservation, and walk over to another dealer. To cancel, I had to go through Expedia, and wait several days for a refund. I needed the car, so I had to agree to the credit check. Before the CSR swiped my debit card, she mumbled something I couldn't quite understand, when I asked her to repeat herself, she spoke up and said "you agree to the additional insurance coverage." NO I DIDN'T!!! Just as I stated in my ORIGINAL BOOKING!! This car rental company is a joke. It's worth paying more to go with another company. Horrible experience.

They asked me for the license of the person who accompanied me, even if he was not going to drive, and when I got back my bill went up from 130 dollars, to 318 dollars and explain to them that had already been paid. Went to the lot out the back to get the vehicle found out keys were locked in the vehicle, waited another 15- 20 mins for someone to get into the vehicle.

What a great way to start our trip. Enjoyed the next 14 days. Dropped of the vehicle, all going to plan. Flew back to Australia and when we landed I checked my credit card statement and the hold Dollar put on my card was fully refunded. Checked it 2 days later and $196 USD was withdrawn from my account. We explained where we were going and we were assured we could pay these in cash. We then found that the bridges into NY were all being changed as epass only - surely Dollar should have known this and advised to take out the epass extra. Instead we had to find out ourselves that cash payment was not possible. Despite trying to pay the 8.5$ charge we were told by the agent it was not possible but we would have to wait and pay a fine and extra toll fees. How is this fair? We have rented many cars over the years from a variety of rental car agencies. This was the first time with Dollar. Prepaid online, show up at the counter and surprise - they added on a liability insurance of $240.00 plus facility charges, concession charge and three other random amounts totalling an additional $170.00. Guy at counter told me the liability insurance was mandatory in Massachusetts even though I told him we have that coverage already. An hour later after haggling, a kind lady who brought our car to us managed to get that removed from our bill - I hope. Still have to check my credit card statement. Next, guy at the counter told us we should buy the EZ pass toll package for $120.00 because he said the tolls do not take cash and the toll to drive in and out of the Boston airport alone is $15.00 each way.

Never being to Boston before, we took him at his word, paid the $120.00 for the machine, having had visions of massive toll charges all over Massachusetts. After traveling around Massachusetts for the past two weeks, we certainly found out the guy lied. You can pay cash and the tolls are very small. Had we not got that EZ pass, it would only have cost us about $8.50 for tolls. What a ripoff. I will never rent through Dollar again. I only gave them one star because of the helpful lady in the car rental garage.

She also said the car must be filled within 10 miles of the airport and I would have to show them a receipt for the gas on return. Never heard that rule before. When I went to the lot to pick up the car after getting my bags she was there also. I showed her my contract and she pointed and said cars are there. I ask which one? She said any full size. Picked the car, only no keys in sight. I walked back and insisted that she should talk to me as if I was human and show me were the keys are. She came out of her booth and again pointed to the cars and said, "They must be somewhere in the car"; shook my head, walked away and found the keys in one of the many compartments within the car.

When I returned the car days later her incompetence came back to haunt me. It seems the contract she gave me was incomplete; in fact it said that in big bold letters on the front of the contract. With this they allowed me to drive off with the car which was registered under an incomplete contract. They need to get it together and show the customers that they appreciate the business!

Beware of Dollar's "Loss dmg wvr" (loss damage waiver) product. This is Dollar's loss damage insurance that they offer to insure the rented car against accidents or damage. Cost, depending on car, is around $29 a day. At the counter we were asked if we wanted "loss damage waiver". We said "yes" thinking that waiver meant do not accept the product. We also told them that we did not want their insurance for loss. The name of their product is very misleading. In my opinion they deliberately put the name waiver in the product name to make customers believe they are turning down the product. I believe they should rename the product "loss dmg ins" (loss damage insurance) to avoid the confusion.

When we contacted the company about this issue, we were asked if we had read the charge ticket, implying that it was our job to make sure that employees of the company did not charge us for something we did not want (essentially saying that they do not care that their employees deliberately charge customers for things they do not want as long as the customers don't catch the charge). Being individuals who take it for granted that the employees of Dollar would not deliberately do something like sell us something we did not want, we did not thoroughly check the ticket. In this case a big mistake on our part. The customer service person we talked to said that she would reimburse us about 1/2 the cost of the charge. The full amount would have been the proper amount for us in this case, but we accepted the amount. If you add airline frequent flier miles number in your reservation to accrue miles for your car rental, you will see extra charge when you return the vehicle. They don't mention that when you pick up the vehicle.

Record the conversation with an agent to avoid any additional charges at the end to cover yourself. During my rental, car had 2 flat tires, none of them had nails or anything. The tires were not maintained properly and had air leak from prior flat repair. They declined to replace the car. In many years of renting cars we had never experienced this before. Then when we said we'd only have one driver so we could avoid the surcharge, the staff (or perhaps the computer) kept making errors in attempting to return the price to the originally specified price. In addition, we had to go through the overall car inspection (necessary so we wouldn't be charged for any pre-existing dents) at the exit gate (rather than when we were initially selecting the car as we have done at every car rental we've ever done in the past) where there was a long line of impatiently waiting folks with their cars. Altogether a thoroughly disagreeable experience. I'm sure we won't be renting from Dollar again any time in the foreseeable future.

We get to the booth outside, and there were at least 8 people/families waiting. Turns out they were out of compact cars. After waiting for 30 minutes, they finally just started putting us in whatever they had, so I ended up in a truck. They immediately put a $250.00 deposit on my card on the day I picked up the car. I dropped the car off two days later and the deposit was $545.00!! In addition, I asked when the $102.26 would be taken out, she said the charges were actually $155.42. She said I had a $51.00 roadside assistance charge.

I NEVER asked for that and it is not on my receipt or contract. So, she said they could offer me a "courtesy" half-off from the $51.00 charge. Turns out their idea of "half off" is $14.32. They can't even do math correctly! AND NOW... that $545.00 could be stuck on my account for up to 7 days. No explanation was given for the higher deposit amount. Horrible company to work with. The ONLY reason they did not get one star is because the poor lot guy trying to get people in cars was very apologetic and nice. Surely there should be a class action suit brought against this company. It is evident by the other 1,400 complaints that they add charges without consent or knowledge of the client, and then refuse to make the adjustment. They are not even apologetic.

I am writing this review to remind everyone to take the time to ask about the charges covered under the agreement to insure the car rental. When I booked my car rental on Travelocity, the cost for the 4 day trip was $186.70. After the final costs were totalled it was $365.74, the only thing I added was insurance. They added Loss Damage Waiver $68.00, LIS $61.52, PAI, PEC $27.96, PREM RD SVC $35.96. The only charge I approved was insurance. The estimate was $341.74.

He admitted that the reservation process is not clear for the Dallas area, there are two airport close but huge difference in fees and taxes. So for Dallas/Fort Worth those fees raised the cost to $254. Almost a $100 more. After turning in my vehicle I received WITH NO NOTICE!!! An additional fee of $300 to my credit card. I called dollar and was told it was a cleaning fee for smoking in the car. I explained the agent that I don't smoke and was nowhere near anyone whom did. She explained she was sorry for the extra charge and would credit my account $300 in 7 to 14 days. Total rip off!!!

You may have noticed Dollar is offering "Prepay" for a lesser rate. I know what you're thinking... I thought the same thing: "Sounds good to me! About time they started offering cheaper prepaid rates like all the other car rental agencies." Unfortunately, there is no fine print to read with Dollar's Prepay option. And that is a bad thing because when you click on that prepay link, unbeknownst to you, you'll be rerouted to another website that says it's Dollar at the top left. You'll also see words like, "No foreign fees, etc." Now, I'm thinking... Why does it say that if I'm renting a car in the United States? And why does some of this verbiage seem a little different... But NOWHERE, at least where I could see it, does it tell you that you're going anywhere but another page on the Dollar site.

So I went on my merry way with the transaction. I paid with my usual form of payment and received my confirmation number - Which oddly started with the letters US, rather than the usual H. Hmm, that's a bit odd. THEN you see on the payment confirmation that you've been dealing with some company registered in Dublin, Ireland! It doesn't give the company's name, so you're assuming it's Dollar, but you know, it's Dollar in Dublin, Ireland.

They did ask for my Loyalty number, which I entered, and I did get another conf number beginning with H. Okay, seems alright. I went back to the original Dollar site to look up my rental because I was feeling just a tad uneasy. And guess what? That H conf number doesn't work on the Dollar site OR on the prepay site. So I entered the number that begins with US and it warps me back over to that site in Dublin, Ireland again, because that's how you have to deal with any issues regarding your prepaid rental. Weird, but all the info's there, so I just leave it alone. I'm probably worrying for nothing...

Wanna know what I eventually found out about all that Dublin, Ireland stuff? It all began when I arrived at the Express member counter (I am a member). Right off the bat... Something's not right. My name's not on the board, so there's no car waiting for me to jump in and go. I have to go stand in line and I have appointments, which is distressing. Then I get to the window and the guy goes, "Ohhhh, yeah, you used that prepay thing. You don't get viewed as an Express member with that and you won't get any points for it, either." Okay, that sucks, but the guy was super nice and so was the lady walking around helping to find a car. And the rest of the process was pretty much the same as always. So, one lesson learned.

THEN, I get home from my trip and take a look at my bank account. Guess what? There is a foreign transaction fee charged to me for a transaction originating from DUBLIN, IRELAND. And the final price of my car rental was higher than the price would have been had I not prepaid. What the...? I called Dollar's dismal customer service line, getting the usual run around, being transferred to goodness-knows-where in the world, disconnected twice, finally reaching a woman I could understand and who was actually not rude at all. She could only offer me her apologies and told me the reason my rate was higher is because this company in Dublin, Ireland is a THIRD PARTY, not Dollar.

This unknown third party company CHARGES a fee for using their services and there was nothing Dollar could do about any of those fees because the third party have their own policies. Dollar can't even offer you any customer service for those prepaid rentals - You have to go through this unknown third party way over in Dublin, Ireland. I asked why in the world would they use them when no other car rental agency has a totally messed up process such as this and she said, "Well, any prepaid charges cannot be collected on the actual Dollar site - That's the only way we do it." :O Really? So basically someone in another country, with whom Dollar has no financial or customer responsibility and leaves you no way to challenge their charges, is being allowed to take your credit card information and charge you fees for their services - ALL without your beforehand knowledge. This is absurd and rather frightening.

Many of you know that if you have tried to book an online rental on Dollar's site recently, it is not working correctly - For many weeks now I've had to call in for every rental and go through that hassle of booking over the phone. The website doesn't work right, except for this prepay link, which has absolutely no problem with whisking you away to some far off country without your knowledge and allowing them to take your credit information and supply you with third party customer service.

I'm just fed up with Dollar. They give you filthy and damaged cars, broken windshields, and most of the employees couldn't care less. The attitude is pretty much, "You want a car? Then take it or leave it." And this is not just at one or two facilities. This is pretty much universal. Their customer service and quality began to decline a few years ago and have just fallen into the basement - If these continue to worsen, soon they'll reach the inner core of the earth. And I'll be posting this everywhere else I can think of.

I rented a midsize SUV from the LAX location of Dollar. After flight delays, we arrived at 11pm. At first the lady at the counter could not find our reservation because the name was input in their system wrong. Once she found it, she asked if I wanted insurance, which I declined. She asked me to sign the paperwork, which showed our total (it was prepaid through a third party), which I did. I should have read over the paperwork closely because she had signed me up for the insurance that I previously declined. The insurance she gave me without my knowledge was more than the daily rental fee! Our bill ended up being over double what we paid initially!

Next, the lady told me to "go outside and see if there is a midsize SUV, if not you can just take one of the cars." I made it very clear the reason I signed up for an SUV was for the extra space (we had a car seat, stroller, and a lot of stuff) but she assured me the car would be equally large. It was late, dark, and there were no staff in the parking lot to assist you so we found what appeared to be a midsize SUV (it was parked in the car area so I don't even know if it was considered a midsize SUV). Once we got the car seat strapped in, we noticed a sticker on the driver side window that said the registration was not up to date. So we unloaded the car seat - still no staff around to help us or answer questions - and found a car (which was not the same size as an SUV by the way). The car was fine, no complaints with the vehicle itself.

When we returned home from our trip, I noticed the insurance charge and then an additional administrative fee. When I called about why I was being charged more than double what I agreed to for the car, not even the SUV I requested, they let me know that I should have read my contract and should not have signed if I didn't want insurance. I guess it was silly of me to assume that I would not be charged for something I declined! Further, the administrative fee was for going on an HOV lane, which apparently had a dual role as a toll road! Had I been notified that I would be charged for this I would have never driven on it!

As if the admin fee isn't enough, I still have to pay the toll fees for driving on an HOV lane because the administrative fee doesn't cover it! I am extremely disappointed with the service and the many extra fees charged by Dollar. I will never use this company ever again. And I will be sure to let all my friends and family know to never use them.

They asked me if I wanted to add something (like insurance or GPS), I just said no and they didn't "force me" to take it. She took me to the car, asked me if the car was okay and I was on my way. The car was clean and in optimum conditions. When I got there to return the car it didn't even take me 5 minutes. And there were no hidden fees, I paid exactly what they said I would pay when I reserved it. I don't know why they have sooo many bad reviews.

To start off, I gave just one star because they require something in that field. I would give them 0 stars otherwise. Let's start with check in at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Rep at counter did not speak good English. She did not go through paperwork, and she rushed through what little information she did go through. After her, we went to get in our rental. There they tried to put us in a SMALLER SUV than we wanted. We needed a vehicle the size of the Nissan Armada we had requested. They tried to put us in a Nissan Pathfinder, smaller, no leg room in backseat. While expressing my displeasure, I was accused of being angry, when in fact I was very calm but firm on what I thought they needed to do. They ended up getting us in a GMC Yukon for the same price.

After being gone for a week, we returned the car before the required time before our flight (90 minutes according to lady at check in). After looking at the receipt, it showed $600 MORE than what our reservation had showed. I was told that I would have go BACK TO CHECK IN to talk about the bill. There, I found no manager, just counter person. He pointed out that they charged an extra day since we came back after 8 am. AND charged me for insurance. 1) I was NOT told we needed to be back by 8 am, 2) I HAD told the first lady I did not want insurance since I have my own. In the long run, they did take off for the "extra day" but not the insurance, and they did get us in a large enough vehicle. The overall experience was a D-. When this charge hits my credit card, I will protest the charge through them as well. I will walk before I use this company again.

We rented a vehicle one month before our vacation (NY to West Palm Beach). We received a confirmation both the day we rented the vehicle and two days before departure (keep in mind the email stated it only required the credit card, drivers license and the email confirmation); in addition our credit card was charged for all but $25 for the rental. Upon arrival we were informed that the credit check for the person reserving the vehicle excluded them from renting (we were never told about a credit check in the initial reservation or 48 hr confirmation) and when asked if we could transfer to another driver we were told to contact customer service.

Now here is where the fun begins, we call and spoke with a person outside of the US (Mina **) and she prolonged the conversation explaining she had to cancel the reservation entirely and charge a cancellation fee of $55 (keep in mind they took $80 from our account). When I asked to speak with a supervisor she told me he/she would only repeat what she (Mina) is telling me. I then made yet another request to speak with the supervisor and she said he/she is on another call. I then said I was willing to hold and she insisted that he/she will call us back. This went on for several mins and she then states our "refund" would be null and void because the rental time was nearing its pick up deadline.

At this point we decided not to "lose" another penny to these scam artists. We reluctantly gave in and said to cancel the reservation at which time this person informs us time had run out and Dollar would not be refunding anything nor would we be able to get a vehicle. Needless to say we are disputing this with our bank but we don't want this to happen to another unsuspecting soul.

I think the agent purposely pointed to the accept line to have me accept even though I had verbally declined coverage. When contacting the company they said you signed the contract accepting the coverage. Nothing they could do. Counter people get paid commissions on these add-ups, so be aware what you verbally agree to might not be what you get billed for. Initially, I made the reservation online and I paid a part of the booking and when I arrived in the airport and completed the transaction, the Dollar representative asked me if I wanted personal damage insurance which will be $53 in total, if I wanted to pre-pay the petrol for which he did not tell the price, and if I wanted to pre-pay for tolls for which he told me it would be $11/day, even though I told him I am only going from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, where later I found out there are no tolls so he could have let me know that I do not need to pre-pay for tolls. After that, he printed a small receipt and asked me to sign it and charged my card. He did not tell me the amount of money I was charged on my card and I could not see on the receipt because I did not have my glasses with me.

A few days later when I wanted to see where I need to drop off the car, I checked the papers with the drop-off address and I saw the total amount of $730 he charged me, beside the amount of money I paid online. I consider the way that the representative handled everything and the lack of information from his part was very poor. I was not informed properly and I consider it very unfair that he did not tell me all the details, all the charges to my account and did not ask me if I agreed to be charged that amount. I asked them to refund all the extra charges that includes LDW, LIS, PAI, PEC, PREM RD SVC, and emergency sickness protection, for which I did not agree. They refused of course, because I signed the receipt and apparently I used the extra services already. I have done some research and I have noticed that they don't care about their customers. They have only one off customers.

Every business in this world is looking to have happy customers to come back and bring more customers with them. The feedback is essential in Services but not for them. Do not rent cars from this company, do not even consider them as an option. I can't believe that the USA authorities don't take any actions against this scamming company. They are hundreds of people complaining on the internet about their procedures. Somebody must do something. I rented a car on April 25, 2017 through April 27, 2017 at Minneapolis airport in Minnesota for a business trip with my dad. I used my American Express credit card in advance to book it in order to get points. Upon arriving, I was asked to produce the card and my driver's license, which I did, although I started to worry because I am 23, and figured I would not be able to drive the car being younger than 25. Ready to cancel the order and start over with my dad's card, the representative looked at my ID, asked how old I was, and explained it was completely fine that I drive the car. As long as I am the only one to do so.

Upon arriving back to drop the car off, the parking garage was a mess. Lines of cars were waiting to get into the garage and eventually, an employee ushered me into a different rental company's corral. Getting out of the car in the garage full of yelling of employees trying to usher the cars around, I was told that the representative at Dollar Rental was very "busy" at the counter and that we could receive the receipt in an email. Of course I said okay because we had a flight to catch. Weeks later, upon receiving my credit card statement, I saw the Dollar Rental Car charge of $183, but also a different charge from "CarTrawler," for $126. Having no idea what this charge could possibly be, especially from a different company, I called to find out.

Apparently, because I was driving under the age of 25, I was charged 126 extra dollars. No one told me I was to be charged. When I hear that it is okay to drive the vehicle as long as I am the one driving, I don't expect to be slapped with a charge when my dad was more than ready to start over using his card. How can a company like this get away with hidden charges and not tell the customer at all? I would never have agreed to drive if I knew I would be charged that much. This is fraud to me. I believe I have the right to know what is going on behind the scenes. I thought it was strange the entire trip, but it shouldn't be up to me to look into it. I should be told of any extra charges to my card before the transaction is complete. This is a very unfair way to trick and get money out of customers trying to rent a car. I cannot believe the company is allowed to operate like this.

I rented a car from Dollar when on a trip to Tampa, Florida in March 2017. After arriving late at night, the person at the desk took a long time to check us in due to numerous requests to add on cost, such as additional insurance and pre-paying for gas, etc, which we turned down. It was emphasized we would have to pay triple the amount for gas if we did not fill up before returning the car. By the time we finally got our car, it was past 10 pm. We were tired and driving in an area we were unfamiliar. After driving for some time I noticed the gas tank was EMPTY!! There was little to no gas in the car. We had to find an open gas station, no easy task, then fill up the tank. We contacted Dollar to complain and took a picture of the empty tank. We told them we were NOT returning a car with gas in it, since we did not start with any gas.

Then as we continued to drive, I noticed a low tire pressure light that was on. We arrived at our hotel and did not drive the car for a few days. The next time we went to the car, there was a flat tire. I called Dollar to complain, sure it was because there was a low tire light. They proceeded to tell me I would have to pay $80 for someone to come out and additional fees to fix the tire. So we took care of it ourself, which was quite inconvenient. It took us up to two hours of our vacation to get someone to change the tire to a spare, then we drove the car to the Sarasota Airport to exchange cars.

On our way back to the Tampa airport we stopped in St. Petersburg for lunch and used a meter. When we got to the car, there was a parking ticket on the car. We contacted the police dept of St. Petersburg to dispute the ticket, since there was still time on the meter, but could only leave a message. Since we were in a hurry to catch our flight, we decided to just pay the ticket. Then two months later, I get a letter from Dollar charging me a $30 "Administrative Fee" for "Processing the parking violation". What a joke. What a ripoff. Never again.

These car rental companies are protecting their merchandise, go figure, but do not punish us all by making up bogus requirements & stipulations that the company cannot confirm being true. I was told by the FOM Brenda who works at the counter pick inside the Orlando, MCO airport that their website states it. I combed the entire site & could not find the said requirements. When I asked can she show me exactly where it's stated she couldn't find the information. Instead I was left to deal with a very rude associate named Aida. I can understand if I was in the wrong but I wasn't.

This new rule started in Jan-Feb. per their FOM Brenda. I never received a rental because I would've had to pay an additional $500 in order to keep my reservation. I was never contacted by either of the companies, Cartrawler & Dollar Rental in regards to this issue. Instead I was told I will receive an email giving instructions on "opening a case" in order to receive my money back. It is exactly 24 days later & I haven't received not even a courtesy call. I never leave negative comments but I am in disbelief I had such a terrible experience with a company I trusted & recommended so often to many of peers. If we have to look forward to these type of experiences I will never recommend Dollar Thrifty ever again. My booking reference number was **.

I had a really negative experience with Dollar a couple of years ago when they charged my credit card for someone else's rental, and it took a few months to clear up with no apology from Dollar. Why I rented from them again is beyond me, expect they offered a 20% discount. The service at Denver airport was horrific. Long lines, disgruntled employees, kiosks which did not work, etc. I reserved a 4 wheel drive SUV and had a confirmation number. However, they did not have that car to offer me. I had to downgrade to another vehicle with AWD, but was told I couldn't be compensated for the difference because I prepaid. I was starting vacation and just wanted to get away from their rental location so off I went. I am frequently in Denver and know about the toll roads.

When I rent with Alamo the tolls are charged to me at cost, no big deal. Dollar mentioned nothing so I ran on an assumption that they operated the same way. Bad assumption! I was charged a $15 administrative fee for each toll pass. My total fee for the actual tolls was only $21, with an administrative fee from Dollar of $90. My fees cost more than my rental. I'm done with Dollar. I hope this is helpful to others. Stay away from Dollar. I've never had a problem with Alamo or Enterprise.

Along with never indicating I could've paid a fee to avoid any toll charges. Now they want me to pay $60.00. Well needless to say I will never recommend Dollar to anyone and I will never use Dollar Rent A Car. Almost identical to the complaint from NY, we were in DFW in March 2017 and had the same experience. However, I have a witness when I asked the service desk rep at Dollar to show us freeway routes that did not have toll roads. We saw no toll booths, no signage that said a toll started or stopped and had no idea that we were even on a toll road. I guess the rep misunderstood my request... or he intentionally gave us toll routes because of the spiff he gets for generating more revenue. The rental for 2 days was $47; the tolls were $14.40. The "admin fee" was $90. Rent from Dollar if you want... but don't be surprised when the bill they send comes in the mail for twice of what you paid. Apparently this scam is not limited to Texas.

We have rented from them twice now, and both times had horrible experiences. The first time the women I encountered at pick-up was rude, and very nasty with me because I would not purchase their extra insurance. The insurance cost more per day than I was paying to rent the car. After I told her I did not want the insurance, she proceeded to put the agreement in with everything else I had to sign and have me sign it anyway.

Thinking that maybe this was just one employee we tried them again. Same tactic only this time my husband did not catch it in time. After repeatedly verbally declining the add-on insurance to the person at the counter they included it in his paperwork and had him sign it. (Yes he should have read the papers better, but after traveling for 14 hours and discussing his wishes with the person at the counter he thought it was settled.) At drop off he found that this DOUBLED the cost of the car. Bottom line, they will lie, sneak, and bully to get your money.

Please don't ever rent from Dollar/Thrifty, it will ruin your trip or vacation. I reserved an SUV online, in San Antonio to drive to South Padre for a weeks vacation. So the vehicle was prepaid. Upon arriving, we could not fit our luggage in the car (4 people, 6 bags) they didn't have anything larger available. So they suggested renting a smaller vehicle to get us to our condo that we could drop off in South Padre the next day. We did this, however the taxes and fees were over $125 and we were not told about the drop off fee which was another $125. We could have rented the vehicle for the full week and returned it to San Antonio for a total of $145.

Going back to the SUV, we added another driver, however when I received my credit card statement, they had actually added 2 extra drivers, my husband was down as a driver twice and our friend traveling with us. I was charged $389 along with the prepaid amount of $282. None of the fees were discussed, they told us not to worry about it because we were already prepaid.

I called customer service and asked to speak with management, they refused. I told them of my situation and they continued repeating, "You should have read your contract, you should have read your contract, you should have read your contract!!!" I guess what she was really saying was, "Too bad, you lose, don't believe everything we tell you!!" Because she replied, that she wasn't there and doesn't know what the representative told us, so she can't help us, we should have read our contract, and she was laughing!!! I will never, ever, ever use them again. I sent an email complaining and never got a response. So beware, this company survives by cheating and lying to their customers.

She booked a car for pick-up at the airport with "Dollar Rent A Car." When we picked the car up initially nothing was said about a no smoking policy. We are both accustomed to "smoking or non smoking?" courtesies as in the hotel business. At any rate, having not read the rental agreement interlinear jargon and not having the company inform us, we were charged $300. More than the rental price itself.

The moral of the story, in my mind is, don't rely on this company to extend any such courtesies or give you any heads up other than a tiny little no smoking decal tucked away at the top of the windshield behind the Sun visor. I believe that a corporation can actually operate without deceitful practice and even more so with giving such courtesies to someone they hope to bring return business. All three kiosk are broken at the same time? Really... Anyway, a lady name Autumn waited on me. She had zero personality. She was short, curt and rude. She did not even thank me for my business. The amount of "fees" that was added was unnecessary and uncalled for. The lady at the counter had minimal knowledge of anything that was going on, including what I had paid prior to, and just saw the additional 300+ I was paying then. I will never use Dollar again. Especially since I went through using my AAA, or so I thought, not that the lady at the counter had any idea. The fees should not be MORE than the rental. I am extremely disappointed, and angry over the overcharging for a rental... and the car wasn't even clean. It had lollipop sticks in the door handle, and wrappers in the doors. I rented a car from Dollar rentals online and because I chose to pay now my contract was bought by rentalcars.com without my knowledge. We arrived to pick up the car to find out that I had to have a driver’s license from Europe in order to rent the car. Since we are from Canada we didn't have that. They offered no help at the desk to help me out by calling the RENTALCARS.COM to see what happened so we ended up paying $715.32 Canadian since it was spring break in Fort Lauderdale instead of the $324.32 that I had paid 2 months earlier when I booked it through Dollar (Rentalcars.com). Once I returned home I called Dollar and spoke with a woman named April that seem to be willing to help me but she told me that I had to deal with Rentalcars.com first and get my original refund from them.

So I called them and ended up speaking to a manager named Rory and wasn't much help as far as how I ended up renting a car as if I was from London, except to say that when I asked for a quote the website didn't recognize my IP Address so it defaulted to a London email address and that is the reason he gave me for why I ended up paying the lower amount which was no fault of my own. But strangely enough they have a line in their agreement somewhere that states if this happens it isn't their fault either. After a few emails back and forth with him I rec'd my $324.32 refund last week.

Today I tried to call April back as she said once I had the first mess cleaned up. She thought that Dollar Rental would help me with some reduction of the cost I was forced to pay due to Spring Break going on when we arrived March 18/17 and there wasn't much left to rent so they had us trapped. So I feel that they overcharged us knowing we needed a car. I spoke with Freddie on the customer service desk and he was rude and so not helpful like April had been 2 weeks ago and told me that DOLLAR doesn't make adjustments to any charges and that I was free to complain all I wanted but I would not be getting any refund. I would NEVER RENT FROM DOLLAR RENTAL CARS AGAIN UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET RIPPED OFF!!!

I would like to share my sentiments and also some comments that I hope will reach the people running Dollar. I am a small travel blogger and I blog about all my travel around other countries and this was my first try using Dollar Rental. I've been a regular ENTERPRISE user but wanted to give DOLLAR a try this time around. What a big mistake it turned out to be...

My itinerary for this trip was Boston and NYC, both cities were my starting and ending points, and being new to the city, Logan Airport was my first point of contact. Upon arriving at the Dollar Rental Booth I quickly gave them my reservation name and number and they were able to find it with no problem. Now I'm used to sales people upselling stuff and I am usually open to add on things if it was worthwhile. But what I found disgusting is the way that your agent lied so that I take the add ons she was pushing. I do not know if that was how you trained them to upsell but she said and I quote "If you don't take the unlimited toll package you'd be paying $15 management fee PER toll you pass" (which was about 5 according to her and which I later found out to be both untrue).

Plus, I was also bullied into buying the insurance that DOLLAR provides. Even though I already stated that my credit card already has me covered, she made it seem like I had no choice but to get DOLLAR insurance (which essentially doubled my bill). Now I run a small business myself and I couldn't imagine myself lying to my customer just to get a sale. Shame on you!

My last comment was now about the car itself. On my way to NYC I stopped by a beautiful place called Madison Beach but on my first day there my rental wouldn't start. I tried and tried but nothing was working. No lights... No horn... To top it all off I had a lunch meeting I was going to be late to. After almost 2 hours, I finally was able to get a local mechanic to help me out. He drove down and looked at it, spent 5 to 10 minutes diagnosing the problem and finally got it to start. He said it was a faulty/loose battery connection. He charged me $350 for that visit and I want that reimbursed.

I did call it in to your customer service which said that they have taken a note of it and I'd have to discuss it with the manager when I drop the car off in NYC. But lo and behold, when I did drop it off, the receptionist rudely said that there is no manager around and she couldn't do anything. "Call customer service to complain" she said. So I'm very disappointed and up in arms about my whole experience with Dollar. But I do hope someone listens to this and hopefully acts upon it.

Dollar rental is a bottom feeder rental company who takes advantage of customers who put real trust into employees. I should not have to take two hours out of my day to read a contract. I have gotten rental cars before ALL from Enterprise and have never ever had to read the "fine" print. The employees tell you everything and they have always been exact and to the penny. I was charged in excess of over $200 above what I was told by Steve at the airport and a company who supports this type of fraudulent behavior will never gain my trust again.

I was told I was required to purchase the insurance even though I told them I didn't need it because I have full coverage under my insurance company. This was a lie. I was told I would not have to pay for an upgrade. I was charged $50 a day for an upgrade. Another lie. I was told I would be paying for only three days after I gave the agent my exact dates and time of usage. I even repeated it. I was charged for four days. Lie number 3. Went to speak with manager and was blamed for the lies of the company employee. All she would say is that I should have read my contract. I have an active case filed against them by the BBB. My husband and I recently took a trip to Florida to watch our college daughter play softball. We booked our complete trip using our credit card miles. Our flight (which were amazing), our room for 5 days at a 5 star hotel (which was also amazing) and our Rent A Car. Once we landed in Orlando, we picked up our luggage, and headed down to get our car. Once we got to where we needed to be, we waited for an hour for our turn (only 1 person working). Once we got to the window, I showed the person my Trip ID number and was very friendly about what we would need and not. The thing is the car was booked under my name (but husband is listed on the account), so she stated that we needed to add him as the main driver. She also said that we needed to take insurance out (which we already had).

Then she asked about the fuel, we said it can just be filled up and charged to us (person said no more than 10.00 usually) because we had to leave so early in the morning. We did fill it up the night before so we were expecting a little bit of a charge, but we got a charge of 39.59 for fuel. I have the same vehicle at home and I can fill it up when it is almost empty and it wouldn't cost me that much. We didn't get a navigation system because we both had smart phones. Once we got through all of this, she stated that they needed a credit card to have on hand for the fuel and also if there were any other damages - and that I needed to sign and initial by these areas. Being new to this (TRUST ME WE LEARN A VERY VALUABLE LESSON) we did what was asked.

We then proceed out to the car area, like a herd of cattle, had no idea what car we were to take, and nobody was friendly enough to even answer a question. To me in a city that large if you're that unhappy with your job, find another one that don't include working with people daily, many of them couldn't speak or even understand ENGLISH. How sad is this, we live in AMERICA. Anyway once we got home, I got our credit card statement and we had been charged 201.20 for the following 13.69/ day for insurance, 67.00 to add my husband as a driver,39.59 for fuel, 8.60 taxes and 17.56 misc fees, but couldn't get any kind of receipt. I couldn't understand this, since we had been charged 182.41 or 18,241 miles for the initial rental. Thinking a doubled up mistake had taken place, I found out that, that wasn't the case. This charge was on top of everything else.

When I called our credit card company, they did a conference call with DOLLAR RENTAL and all the lady could say was, "you signed the contract" and "CAN YOU HEAR ME". I could hear her, just was in total disbelief that a company could actually do this to people. After all of this, I have now read the reviews and am really dumb to not have done this before. I am usually pretty careful, but couldn't believe the amount of people who have had so many of the same issues. In my words DO NOT USE DOLLAR RENT A CAR - they lie, cheat people but most of all they take people for all they can get and that is truly sad. I wouldn't have even given them 1 STAR but it is required, maybe that one star is just for being there in person, I don't know. ABSOLUTELY THE WORST CAR RENTAL PLACE I HAVE EVER USED!!!

If went through a toll freeway 2 x in a Dollar rental car, 1 x out of the airport and 1 x back. The fee was .81 cents each for a total of $1.62. Dollar did not notify me that I had incurred this charge. They contract out to ATF, a company that bills and sends invoices out to rental car holders. Dollar states in the rental agreement that you can purchase an $87.00 unlimited toll rd pass. So, because I did NOT buy the pass they CHARGED $30.00 to process my $1.62 fees. That's just a little over 2000% markup.

I called NTTA (North Texas Toll...) and DFW Parking General and they showed NO toll charge present or past on my rental car license plate or my Oregon driver's license. At the very least, Dollar should notify the customer that a minimal toll fee has occurred and give the customer the right to pay before they "pay" on my behalf at such a ridiculous markup they claim as just processing. Not a nice business practice. Does Texas have no governing? Also, they charge $9.99 a GALLON if you bring the car back not totally full! I knew that ahead and made sure I stopped at the gas station by the airport.

It would be 0 stars if I could. I booked a rental through Expedia; when I went to pick up the car they confirmed my reservation, but then everything went wrong. The guy at the counter kept asking me to sign off on things like, adding a Sun Pass (EZ), adding a second driver, adding more insurance, adding additional days, and a few other things I didn't understand. My original booking covered unlimited time for 3 days, 2 drivers, unlimited Sun Pass (EZ) usage for 3 days, and the largest insurance package.

I kept telling the guy I already booked this car with everything I needed and he lied over and over telling me I'm just signing off on that in person since I booked online. When I dropped off the car they charged my credit card for 150% more than my original booking costs. A $200 car rental booked online ended up being $500. I am working with my credit card company to remove the additional charges so we'll see how this plays out. I will never use Dollar Rent A Car ever again! Terrible.

They added all these other things I didn't need since I had AAA. They are billing my credit card for $1820. Next time I will read every word of every form no matter how long it takes.

WTH is a $25 "Early return fee" that is more expensive than the quote for the whole weekend? Reserved car for Friday 7 am returning Sunday. Prepaid $65 (including taxes/fees) for the rental (thru SW airlines site). Returned on Saturday at 11 am and the bill was $81 which included a $25 "ERF". Why not charge the lesser of the two?

Every time (not just Dollar RAC) I book a special rate, there's misleading upselling that somehow the rep is going to save me money by offering me an upgrade at a discount, which ALWAYS turns out to be 200-300% more than the current reservation. This is clearly a "Bait-and-switch" marketing tactic meant to take advantage of unsuspecting travelers. How can you save money by paying for an upgrade at full retail price when you originally reserved a vehicle at a special rate? My original reservation for the week was $350 and rep actually told me I could save money by upgrading to a full sized vehicle for $700 for the week! WTH? AT KCI (aka MCI) there's no obvious signage nor instructions given at checkout as to where to drop-off your keys after hours as there are in other airports. Lighting is poor, so MAKE THE SIGNS BIGGER.

My husband and I chose Dollar as a bundle deal through Orbitz when planning our trip to Texas. We pre-purchased our rental car and paid for insurance in advance as well. When we arrived to pick up our car, the very unfriendly representative argued with us that it wasn't pre-paid which I had the receipt for and then said we would also have to purchase insurance which was also listed on our receipt. When the very unhelpful agent finally completed our paperwork we were sent to the parking ramp and greeted by the same unfriendliness and told to pick a car. We looked at many cars, all of which were damaged in many ways.

We finally selected what was pretty much our only choice, asked the attendant to come and look at the car and showed her the damage (broken hub) on the front and back corner panel. She then proceeded to say "That's fine. No big deal." We went through the check out line and told the attendant about the damage. She walked around and looked at it and said very loudly, "This car can't go out!!!" We then had to go back, unload all of our luggage and find another car.

Needless to say, never ever again would we use Dollar Rental! Anyone considering using them, don't! I'm sure anyone reading this has never rented from them before and that is why you are reading the reviews. I'm pretty sure they don't have repeat customers, we all had to learn the hard way. I normally read reviews but in this case didn't, big mistake. I have seen nothing but poor reviews. HORRIBLE COMPANY!

Big rip off, charging $42.00 for a refill on a mid-sized car that had 1/2 a tank, charged me insurance when I didn't need it as I already have insurance. Then instead of my bill being the balance of what the original agreement was $115, my card is charged $371.00. I never received a copy of my charges. I was never given a receipt of any kind. On 2/20/2017, I received an invoice from Dollar for $18.70, which was for a $3.70 electronic toll (they have no pay as you go tolls) and a $15.00 admin fee from Dollar.

I tried calling ExpressToll (the company that operates the Colorado Toll System), I was told I should have read the entire rental agreement and therefore it was my fault. In addition she told me, "now you learned a lesson!!" It is worth noting that Dollar can charge the $15 fee up to 6 times in a single rental, if the tolls warrant. The reality is they get you no matter what, because they offer a transponder that will pay the tolls for $3.95 per day plus the cost of the tolls. Of course, my agent failed to mention this to me. I would not recommend Dollar Rental.

When I questioned the charge I got several excuses like the system was down or the person I would need to talk to was unavailable. This went on for 5 days, each time being on hold from anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes.

Finally today I talked to someone and they said that was the rate for an extra day and the taxes?! That did not even include the optional insurance as I declined that part. I can not imagine how much they would have charged for that. They were very rude and said there was nothing they could do, that was the rate. No apology at all. It has become my personal mission to make sure that every human being able to rent a car never uses Dollar Rent A Car. For the past three years I have been stationed in Spain, yes I am in the US Military and I love it. I hadn't been home in three years so imagine how excited I was when my orders were going to allow me to travel home for the holidays before I went to several schools in route to my next command. I did some research and asked around. Several folks onboard my ship recommended Dollar because they were cheap and offered a military discount. So I got onto Orbitz and looked it up, sure enough Dollar was gonna run me 800 bucks for a month long. I thought that's pretty good considering I couldn't apply a military discount right there. So I went ahead and reserved it a couple weeks pass and I leave Spain. You would not believe the trouble I had when I arrived in Atlanta at the Dollar counter.

I asked the young lady at the counter if they did indeed offer a military discount. I was told that they did, but she couldn't apply it to an online reservation. A reservation mind you that I made to ensure a car was available when I arrived. So I suggested canceling the reservation I made as I was there and obviously so was the car. However, apparently, she couldn't do that. So I decided whatever I'm here, they have a car, what's 100 bucks off the total anyway. So the process begins... to get worse.

She asks what type of coverage I would like on the car. I politely inform the young lady that I have USAA and they cover my rentals. She tells me that I must get insurance coverage of some sort. I again tell the woman that I have USAA and they cover my rentals, even prove that I have USAA, and again tell her I do not require insurance. I'm told that if I do not pick a coverage option I will not be allowed to rent the vehicle. So I go with the "cheapest" liability coverage of some 30 dollars a day. When everything is said and done the rental that was going to cost me 800 ended up costing me nearly 2000 dollars.

When I arrived at my friend's house, as I wasn't yet going to go surprise my parents with my arrival since they didn't know I was in Georgia, I read the agreement that I signed. Lo and behold to my surprise in the agreement by the company it states I am not required to get ANY coverage and by denying their coverage I am accountable for anything that happens. If I have insurance they will work with that company and if the company deems me at fault or refuses to cover it I am held accountable for damages. So the company itself doesn't even require me to get their insurance. Well 31 days come and go I have a wonderful time with family and friends that I haven't seen in 3 years. I return the car and upon getting to my next location I call the company. They are closed when I call so I decide to email.

I still have not received a response from the email I doubt I ever will. When I finally did get ahold of a representative on the phone and I explained at length the issues I had I was, not politely but not rudely either, informed that it was my fault. Since I did not ask for a manager at the counter or call the company at the counter they could not and would not help me. I had the car for far too many days, insurance ended up costing nearly 900 dollars by the way, and they could not do anything about it.

I stressed to the woman I spoke with that the company essentially baited and switched my by advertising a rental for 800 dollars for 30 days on Orbitz then charged me nearly 2 grand. That's when she informed me that they are not responsible for upholding the price set or advertised by a third party. I believe that's about when I stopped being cordial and told the woman again, at length, sternly how this company is backhanded, in it for the money and nothing more, and I will be making it my mission to personally see that everyone knows Dollar and their Parent company Thrifty do not care about the people to include the military.

To quell my building rage she said that she will meet me half way and refund half the cost of the insurance but can not do more than that as I had the vehicle for too long. The vehicle that was returned in better shape than I got it by the way. Because the tires were not aligned, the wipers were so corroded that they did nothing to the windshield except leave streaks, a headlight and taillight was blown out, all of which I took care of.

I guess it wasn't all bad... I got 450 bucks back from the 2 grand that I spent on this rental when it was advertised to cost me only 800. Oh and because I was caught in traffic coming back to Atlanta and thus an hour late on turning it in I was charged for an extra day. Regardless of the fact I returned the car on the day it was to be returned, just you know an hour late. So if you love throwing your money away, or you have plenty to burn, by all means go with Dollar.

I rented a car from Logan Airport on Saturday evening on February 11th. And was very disappointed with the service that I received At Logan Airport. My wife booked it on Priceline and it was supposed to be $10.00 per day for the rental for a three day period and was supposed to amount to $68.00 total for the rental. When the women at the counter added everything up the $68.00 rental went up $213.00. During the process the women asked me if I wanted insurance coverage on the car and I told her no. I never get the insurance coverage on rental cars because my credit card covers me for insurance on rental cars. I did agree to pay for the cost of the easy pass even though I thought it was highway robbery. They charged $11.99 a day for the easy pass. I have been to other cities where they charge $4.00 per day for easy pass. $11.99 a day to use the easy pass twice is highway robbery.

When it came time to check out, the women just said I just need to push the accept button and then sign. She never went over the charges with me and I didn't insist because I was in a hurry. On Sunday night I just happened to look at the paperwork I received and was shocked to see that there was an $28.49 charge per day for insurance coverage that I never asked for. The insurance the women tacked on was more than double the price of the economy car I rented.

I was pretty upset when I found this out and decided that I no longer wanted to keep the car. I felt like she intentionally tried to cheat me and I felt this was a terrible way to conduct business. I doubt that I will ever rent from Dollar Car Rental again. I asked her why it was so high and she just told me, "Oh, the fees just add up." She told me that part of the reason why it was so high was because there was a deposit put on my credit card that would come off when I returned the car. I was in a rush and didn't thoroughly scan the papers handed to me. This was far and away the worst experience I have ever had renting a car and I will not be renting from Dollar again.

I rented twice from Dollar in January - first time I have ever used their service. Understand that I am in a rental car around 150 days a year. I prepaid the rentals for both New Orleans airport and Memphis airport... nice daily rates, decent cars--impressive. At the airports I was careful to make sure I had my gasoline receipts--have seen other's reports that you must show your receipt. I was NOT asked to show that receipt at either location and was NOT charged for gasoline as I filled it myself. So far so good...

At January month end I was filling out my expense report and comparing it to each line on my company credit card statement. I saw both Dollar charges, which matched the receipts I received at the airports but noticed two charges on my card that I disputed - both listed as "CARHIRE" and in the description "DOLLAR THRIFT IRL". I did a little research and found that Carhire was apparently based out of Dublin, Ireland and appears to be a travel service, similar to an Expedia or Orbitz. I immediately contacted my credit card company and disputed the charges (which did NOT match up to any dates I had traveled or rented a car).

A couple days later I received a cordial email from a company called "CARTRAWLER" asking me why I was disputing my charges. One again, another overseas company from somewhere in Europe. Both emails I received from Cartrawler referenced My Dollar rentals. I called Dollar and learned that Carhire/Cartrawler do the billing for prepaid rentals for Dollar. I closed the dispute and paid the bills for the two prepaids billed through Carhire/Cartrawler. My point is this--why do I as the consumer have to mess around with Carhire/Cartrawler and get two sets of bills. I rented from Dollar, not Carhire/Cartrawler. You too would have disputed these bills as they look bogus.

Also, the combined totals of the bill received at car return and the Carhire/Cartrawler bills combined make the Dollar rental not so competitive. The bill at car return is ONLY for the airport fees and any extras--it will not include your prepaid charges. Pucker up if you prepay Dollar rentals as they are NOT what they appear to be. Also, the combined bills for Memphis do not match up - are close but still do not match up. Again, cars were nice, fairly clean and people I dealt with were nice enough. I will NOT be renting from Dollar again based on the two experiences with a company in Ireland being involved in my billing and two sets of bills. Just not comfortable with the experience. There are too many other choices and they don't invoice funky like this.

I have never had such rude service as I encountered at the Charlotte Douglas airport. From the moment I spoke to the customer service agent, I was met with resistance and an attitude. When I explained I was renting a car because I had been in an accident and my insurance company told me to request the insurance rate, I was immediately told "we don't do that here, you need to go downtown." I then explained I needed to rent a car anyway since I had been dropped off at the airport. I was told "I can't make a reservation for you."

I told her I had made a reservation that morning, but didn't realize it was for the next day I was told "you have to change that yourself. New policy. All you have to do is go to Dollar.com." Being a frequent renter, I already know there is no way to look up a reservation without the confirmation # so I ask to borrow a pen. She refuses, tells me to give her my phone which has the confirmation # on it and she cuts and pastes the confirmation. I attempted to modify the reservation and got an error message at the end indicating the system encountered a problem and to try again later.

Again I requested a pen and again she refused asking "why do you need a pen?" I told her I needed to call the 800 #, she asked for my phone, handed it back to me since the screen had gone to sleep and barked "call it back up." Instead of giving me a pen, she writes the confirmation # down and hands it to me. I call the 800 # only to be told the reservation had been successfully modified. I hand the confirmation # to the agent and she finally enters it into her computer. She prints out the receipt and tells me to sign and initial. Kind of hard to do without a pen so I again request one which was met with an exasperated huff.

I go to where the cars are located and there are none available in the class I have rented. At this point, I have had enough and decide to call my insurance agent to see what my options are. While on hold, a Dollar employee asks me if I need help. I explain there are no cars in the class of service I just rented and she mumbles something. I have to ask 3 times what she said, explaining "I'm sorry, I can't hear you" and she points to a car and says "you can have that one."

Again, the same attitude as the agent. It is at this point that despite being a Dollar Express member I decide I am not rewarding this extremely poor service with my business. I go to the Alamo counter and get the customer service every person who is paying for a service deserves. Kind of sad that these Dollar employees are potentially the 1st people a visitor to the Charlotte area encounters. Definitely not the southern hospitality one expects. Quite frankly, the experience didn't even meet minimum standards of respect.

40 minutes late costs $737.94 EXTRA?? PLEASE BEWARE - As if it isn't stressful enough getting to an airport late, try returning your rental car 40 mins late and getting a bill for $962.93 instead of the estimated $224.99! (My Credit Union blocked my card due to this expense which prevented me from purchasing a new airline ticket because I missed my first flight - Thank you Dollar Rent A Car!) My original estimate for a Mid-sized car for 4 days at $19.40 per day=$77.60+ additional charges* $147.39 = TOTAL ESTIMATED CHARGE $224.99.

I returned the car 40 minutes late and my daily rate goes from $19.40 to $156.82 (a day) AND they tacked on $26.66 late fee? Nowhere in this 7 page policy can I find any statement about returning a car 10-20-30-40 minutes late unless "Late returns may be subject to extra hour and/or day charges" is Dollar's ambiguous attempt at a warning. An 80% increase in daily rate is ridiculous. Try adding up the taxes alone on that.

Needless to say I called "Customer Service" immediately and the woman on the phone apparently agreed that the new rate charge was wrong and she was going to credit me the difference. Nice, except I could not get her to understand that I wanted to be credited for the additional taxes I was charged ($188.26). She had no clue what I was talking about. I tried to explain how the taxes were taken on a total sum and she said that the taxes had nothing to do with the rental charge. I asked to speak with the manager and she said she was qualified to handle the billing. I asked again to speak with a manager and she told me there was no one to speak with, she "was qualified to do the billing" and that she was going to credit back the daily rental fee overage. I asked her to remove the $26.66 1 hour late fee and she told me "you were late. I can do nothing about that"... I could go on.

I just wonder how many folks get overcharged "scammed" like this? I was running late, they knew it, they upcharged (an additional $737.94) knowing I might not have time to go back to their rental counter and argue the cause. I took a day off from worrying about it and tried the customer service line again today. This time the Rep reviewed the bill and adjusted it to reflect my original estimate. She even deducted the "late fee". But at no time did I get an apology. Dollar Rent A Car will not be getting my business nor my endorsement. Just the opposite. I hope someone reading this learns something beneficial. I hope one person can gain wisdom from my very stress filled situation. Shame on you Dollar!

I returned rental car with full tank as I had refueled at the airport minutes before I dropped it off at 530 am in Sacramento. No one was there to receive it so I followed instructions. Usually I get a receipt emailed to me but I hadn't received one yet. So I called today to get my receipt and noticed a fuel charge for $17.73 on the receipt. I called customer service, they answered quickly and said as a courtesy they would remove the charge. The customer service rep was courteous and said it may take up to 18 days to refund. This was handled but the fuel charge should not have been added. Had I not looked at my receipt they would have had added a fraudulent amount to my credit card. The removal of the charge should not have been called a courtesy as the charge was erroneous. It was at the least a mistake and if not fraud.

Horrible experience!!! We rented a car November 2-9 in from Orlando. When we got the rental, had to wait about an hour to get the car. The man at the counter was rude and could barely be understood when he spoke. He was upset I didn't take the insurance provided by them as I had my own insurance. Finally got paperwork and was directed "through those doors and to the right". Went to another booth and was told "Your car is the last one on the left and the keys are already in there". There was no walk around or any paperwork provided for me to notate any issues with the car, not that I could have, as it was very dark in the garage. Returned the car early after noon on November 9 and was told "All good, hope you had a good trip!" The only thing the check in person did was turn on the car to make sure it had a full tank of gas.

Fast forward 20, yes 20 days and I am getting phone calls from the Claims office regarding a rental we had. They also called my mother in law, mind you she was not listed as any contact on our list, so not sure how they got her info. The call was about some damage that happened when the car was in my possession. I can assure you no damage happened when I had the car. I was also told I refused to give my insurance information, I promptly corrected them and stated I was never asked for the information. I requested all paperwork regarding the incident be emailed me. I was told email was not possible, it had to go through USPS...OK fine, send me the paperwork. Paperwork was received and the damage noted on the incident report does not match the damage recorded on the estimate or the pictures provided. Cost to repair the damage is $469.

Oh and let me not forget to mention there was an incident report with my signature on it... Only it's not my signature, not even close, so now we have forgery added into this. This company is horrible!!! I thought I could save a few dollars by renting from them, biggest mistake!!! Next time I will pay more for better quality service.

As no check arrived, I called the company and I was promised to receive the check in 45 days (due in January 19). It's January 23 now, no check arrived, and I feel I'm not getting my money back. I may have lost my 200 dollars, but at least I can share my terrible experience with this company, so others won't lose their money. Dollar will never see my money again. I'll make sure my travel agent know about this, so other customers don't get ripped off by this terrible services company. I can't forget to mention, it was a prepaid rental.

I rented a vehicle in December of 2016 from Dollar Rent A Car, a Hertz company. I was traveling across several New England states. This vehicle had the worst windshield wipers I have ever seen. Driving in some unfamiliar bigger cities and through the mountains in Pennsylvania during snow, this cause some major issues for me. Upon my return I was given a $50 refund. No apology, mostly an attitude. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the company gave me back another $25. That was apparently all my life was valued at with them. I normally rent from Avis/Budget and have always had the best service. Dollar had a chance to make an impression, but I felt at least 50% of my rental fee should be refunded. They refused to do more than they did and simply refused to deal with me any longer. I would not recommend ever using Hertz or any of their affiliated companies.

Booked a car through Expedia as part of a vacation package. At the car rental counter (which incidentally took us 1/2 hour to get to because there were only 3 out of 10-12 agents available), we were asked if there would be any additional drivers (other than my husband whose name was on the rental agreement). We kinda hummed and hawed and said, "Yeah sure, why not. It wouldn't hurt to have me as an additional driver. You never know what might happen." The agent processed the rental and we signed the agreement. We declined all insurance and were planning on filling up the car before turning it back in so that there should've been no extra charges for this rental on our credit card. To our surprise, there was a charge of $65ish on our next credit card statement for Dollar Rent A Car.

I called to inquire and was told it was for the additional driver. I said that we were absolutely not told about an extra charge for this service and in fact, would've declined the service had we been told (it wasn't necessary for me to drive and in fact, I never did). The agent said it was stated on the agreement we signed and there is nothing they can do about it. I told her that if we were to read through all the terms and conditions of the agreement at the rental counter, we would be there for hours (and I slightly doubt anyone else does either). I reiterated that we should not be charged as the agent did not tell us about the extra charge... especially as he sat there watching us banter back and forth about whether or not we should take it!

I told her that we would not accept this charge so she filled in a dispute report on our behalf (supposedly). It's been several days and we've not heard anything back. It's very unnerving as I have a feeling that nothing will get done on their end and we don't want to pay interest charges on our credit card, so we will mostly likely pay it. But I do plan on following up for as long as it takes.

Dealing with Dollar in Dubai is a mortifying, 2 cent experience, even allowing for differences generated by local business practices. This is, indeed, a woeful organization to judge from my experience. It might perhaps be different if you have ordered a high end vehicle or you are asking them to do something *extremely* simple however the car I signed up for (on a long-term lease) in the first instance was not delivered - I had to chase Dollar seemingly endlessly by phone to get the right make and model. Some months later I had to remind the company to bill me, then I had to query the billing - this was another long, long process which still isn't fully resolved. When I had a mechanical problem it took weeks to sort out and, once again, I had to pursue Dollar with multiple reminders and prompts.

Get ready for them not to know your telephone number, your address or any of your other relevant details, even though they should plainly have all of these things on record from the contract you have signed. Prepare yourself to wait in pointlessly for hours as long-standing appointments with Dollar U.A.E. go unfulfilled. In my experience no one will ever actually turn up until you become extremely demonstrative. Polite enquiry by phone or email will get you precisely nowhere in fact. Ultimately, it might be better to hire a camel.

I am (still) having a very bad experience in tracking an item that I left in the car. I left a garage opener in the car (where the ashtray area normally is). I had called the rental car immediately after I returned the car and returned home (I am 100% sure that the item was in the car). I filled an online lost & found form, received an automatic reply, and then called several numbers, until I finally spoke to a person (703-519-8703). She advised me to fill the lost & found, which I had already done. 1-2 hours after I had filled the online form, I received a second email notifying that they have not found the item (which was very strange, as I know that I left the opener at the ashtray area).

I spoke with the representative on the phone, and she gave me very confusing response: that (1) no way that I could have received that second email, since she is the one who sends these emails, that (2) this takes about 24 hours to investigate, and (3) when I mentioned that I was confused, too, and that I have this e-mail, I gave her the details of the item lost, and she said she'll "look into it." 4+ days later, I have no news from Dollar, nor from this representative. I have no idea what happened to my garage opener (which would be a major pain to get it if I lose), and no resolution.

Today 1/9/17 I called the main customer number/lost & found in the website (703-549-1438), and the one number where I could speak with a person last week (703-519-8703). This time, none of the numbers worked. They prompt to transfer me to a department (e.g. rental counter), and nothing happens/nobody responds, either this past week (called 9 times), or this week (called 5 times). Overall, terrible customer service/follow-up. Even reaching someone is a major hassle.

Adding to the long list of complaints related to Dollar's policy of charging a $15.00 administrative fees per toll amount they pay on behalf of their clients, I can add my own negative experience to the list, as an unsuspecting car renter... This particular experience took place at the Orlando airport, which is signficant in that as soon as you drive away from the rental area, you are essentially on an expressway. Having been to Florida many times before, I have always been cautious about ensuring I had money to pay at the tolls, and this trip was no different. We used the toll roads sparingly but always used the "cash" booths to pay our share. So needless to say I was a little shocked when I received a bill from Dollar Rental, advising me that I owed them $50.50 for 3 unpaid toll charges that totaled $5.50.

In researching the unpaid tolls, and Central Florida's Expressway website, I suspect we may have traversed through the land of their fairly new "All-Electronic Tolling" initiative, which essentially means you are incurring charges without a visible indication. Certainly, I did not go through any of the E-Pass booths. Of course, contacting the Expressway authorities was a waste of my time, as they naturally suggested I deal with the rental company. And the rental car company of course is protected, since all weary travellers signing for a rental car have nothing else to do but read every chapter and verse of their accordion rental agreement "book", which essentially is there to protect the company and justify their ludicrous policies.

For me, that was just 1 more reason to never use Dollar rent a car again. The first reason came upon arrival at the initial counter visit, where the courteous agent tried to upsell me on pretty well everything that he could... When I thought he was done, he asked whether anyone else would be driving. Although not planned, I asked whether my wife would also be permitted to drive, and he said no problem, just needed her license details, etc., which were provided. It was only after receiving my accordion contract agreement, and reviewing it prior to going to select our vehicle, that I noted he had charged me an additional ~$96 for including my wife as a driver. This little bonus was NEVER mentioned to me during our conversation.

After discussing briefly with my wife that there was no real benefit to having her as a driver, I then rejoined the line, and by the time I was served, was told the 20 minute "change period" had expired, which set off a whole new, complicated process to delete this added charge from our contract. Too bad these events tarnish the memories and reputation of Florida, but in my opinion, they certainly do.

I rented a car in Las Vegas and told the guy of the front desk to add the "Pay per plate toll", describing my route to him (Las Vegas, down to Los Angeles and then up to San Francisco). He charged me with 90 dollars for that. My surprise came a month later, when back in my home I received a 15 dollars fine for passing through a toll in Los Angeles, plus a 15 dollars bill that "Dollar Rent A Car" charged me with for that communication via regular mail. I have been complaining for that charges since I received that letter, and the only reply I get from them is that "some tolls are not included". As I told them, I was not informed about that at the time of the rental. Besides, I told the guy to include ALL THE TOLLS.

If someone could please help me with this I would be very happy, as I am Spanish and I do not know how to solve this. They have threatened me all the time, telling me that if I do not pay, I will be included in some kind of blacklist and will not be able to rent a car ever again in the US. I told them that I would be happy to pay that fine if they give me back the money I paid for the tolls, but I do not find it fair to charge me for the tolls AND the fine, as I hope you may understand. I know that 30 dollars is nothing compared to this woman's charges, but my 30 dollars, plus everyone's others dollars, mean a lot of money. Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

First I filled up less than 1 mile away the cost was $6?? I only drove 100 miles! I was told I brought it back with a half a tank of gas. I begged with the people to think about it. A Kia Rio would not burn a half a tank of gas going a hundred miles. However I was charged $5.99 a gallon 14.5 gallons of gas. The Kia gas tank only holds 11.4 gallon! The Kia gets 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. That is average of app. 31 mpg. I am blown away that the 4 people I have talked to could not do the math to figure out this is felonious charges. There is no way to prove we did not unless we go on Steve Wilkos and get a lie detector test which I'd be willing to do. When I arrive at Montgomery I got to the counter and before I can even say a word, their "customer service rep" tells me..."we have no rental cars available." I said to him, "Sir, I have a reservation." To which he replied (direct quote here). "You didn't hear me the first time, I said we have no reservations." I then ask him what I am to do and he tells me (quote here) "You will have to figure it out."

There were about 1-15 of us in this situation and we were told to call one of 3 taxi cab companies. James Taxi Service, Paul's taxi and Yellow cab. All of us called and were told due to the weather and the day, taxi service was limited. I was told it would be about an hour. After an hour of waiting, in that time (3 taxis total showed up). I called all of them back and was told it would be at least another 45 minutes. After waiting another 45 minutes only one other taxi showed up (there was a line). It was now 10 PM and I had to be up at 0530 for work the next day.

I went back to the "customer service counter" and the guy working there told me..."just see if you can pay someone to give you a ride who is getting off the next plane." Left with no other choice and after having waited for now 2 hrs, I did exactly that. I had to pay a stranger $80 FOR a ride. The next day I lodged a complaint with Dollar and was told even though I had a reservation with a confirmation number, that did not mean I had a reservation. I filed the complaint and gave a full account of my issues. Long story short, they told me and others, we needed a receipt.

Why in the hell would I make something up when the whole issue was a result of them not honoring the reservation I had... I told them I wasn't looking for even money to be compensated but would take the equivalent of what I paid in rental car fees/services. I called corporate and had about the same "customer service" with Sharita as I had before... horrible!

I travel A LOT with my job and this was by far THE WORST rental experience I have ever had. Had they taken care of me and made this right, I would have chalked it up to just a one off but the manner in which this was handle and their lack of caring or willingness to make it right has lost this customer for life! Total joke of a company who obviously does not care about their customers!

Rented a vehicle from them in Texas. Was told that we didn't need a pass for toll roads, if we avoided them. Every road is not clearly marked so you have no idea whether it is a toll road. Thought we only went through 2 tolls. Weeks later I received a bill for two tolls. Each one occurred a $15 charge for toll of less than two dollars. I'm ok with that. The following week I get another bill for 3 more tolls. Go to the web site to look at the vehicle supposedly going through tolls and the web site is under repair. Hmm. I know that this may not all be their fault, but they should let the customer know how the tolls work for that area. There are no toll booths to pay at, and before you can get off you are already on them.

The pick-up store was closed on 11/25 Thanksgiving and we didn't get any notification before that. We called Dollar at San Francisco Airport (SFO) and the agent told us we could pick-up the vehicle at SFO with same price. It took us the whole morning to finally get the car and we had to delay our scheduled trip. When we returned the vehicle at LAX, we found the agent made a horrible mistake: he changed our return location from LAX to SFO! We had to pay additional $400 due to daily rental rate increase from $86.52 to $179.88. We've already talked with the Dollar manager at LAX (around 2 pm 11/27) and he told us the only solution was to let the SFO branch to change the daily rental rate.

We then called the manager on duty at SFO (around 2:30 pm). She is the worst person I talked with. She gave me a feeling that your company is reluctant to solve this problem. This case is your fault because no one told us the local Dollar was closed on Thanksgiving. No compensation for our wasted time and money. Now you charged us $400 more for your mistake. This is ridiculous! Hope you can help us solve this problem. Thank you so much!

First of all, I have been a Dollar Express member for years and have always had excellent services at the Orlando Airport until October 17. My reservation was for a full size car and I was able to take my pick from several. I chose a Ford Fusion. From the airport, I drove directly to my hotel to check in. When I tried to lock the car door with the remote, it didn't work so I manually locked the doors. When I returned to the car, the remote would not open the doors and I could not locate a lock in which to use the key. It turns out the key fob was not programmed as the panic alert did not work either. I call Dollar thinking they would send someone to exchange key fobs but they sent a lock service never telling me I would be charged.

The lock is well hidden on the new Fusions and unless you're familiar with the Fusion it is almost impossible to locate. When I received my bill at the end of my rental I was charged approximately $80 for the lock service and called Dollar to complain. Their response was, "sorry but they're not responsible". That is the end of my relationship with Dollar. I will NEVER rent from them again.

I am very unhappy with my experience with Dollar car rental. I went online to make my reservation from start date 11/14/2016 until 11/20/2016. My bill and total would only be $171.06. My total, when I go to Puerto Rico the girl at the counter tells me that my total for the car rental would be $334.00. I questioned as to why and she told me that that I was being charged $1.95 a day for trpp, $10.95 a day for sli, $19.21 for transp rec fee, $1.16 city tax, $12.21 for state tax, $1.39 a day vehicle battery rec, $3.89 a day vehicle excise charge, $4.95 a day and keep in mind these are charges per day and subtotal came to other charges $217.62. Grand total of $334.00.

The only reason that I did not put up a fight at the time was that I was tired from the trip wanted to go see my family which I had not seen in 5 years, but I did mentioned to the girl at the counter I have my reservation and the total that I have for those days is $171.06. She said it does not matter that the charges that she was imposing are the correct ones. It's unfair and I think that if the prices are going to differ from what you reserved online that they should advise you. I will never deal with this company again. They just lost a customer. I would like to get advice on what to do. If there is a case, I am not trying to create a problem just want to be treated right. Money does not grow on trees for me to throw money away like that. I have the receipts and the reservation for the $171.06!!!

I booked this through Rentalcars.com for early August. The hotel informed them that we would be an hour late. On arrival found it had been sub-contracted to Dvocek Car Hire. There was no car and we had to go to the Airport to pick one up. So wasting over two hours of our holiday. Car was fine. We damaged a wheel and the tire. It was about four weeks until this showed on my credit card statement. I have an excess insurance with Car Hire Excess and the claim handled by OSG Group. The latter has been excellent in this showing patience but obviously wanted to see the invoice. I tried to get an invoice but no success so I asked Rentalcars.com to obtain one. I also asked it to find out why I had to go to the Airport. I never have received an answer to the latter.

I passed these enquiries to Rentalcars.com and only received the invoice on November 12th. Then it contained a charge for out of hours. I have decided to give it all up now as it takes too much of my time. A cheque was received from OSG two days after I sent the invoice. Obviously I would not recommend Rentalcars.com as they appear unable to control the companies they use, nor Dollar or Dvocek Car Hire. I highly recommend Car Hire Excess with OSG handling the claims.

Ended up paying for it with the insurance we had to buy. So 1st they could not find our prepaid Expedia rental on the computer so we paid 189.00 prepaid car rental and 260.00 when we arrived in Houston, Texas for insurance and toll charges. When we arrived at the rental counter the young man tried everything in his power to get us to accept a more expensive vehicle, (for more money than the additional rental). We repeatedly told him NO, and asked for the car we had already paid for. Finally he agreed and had me give him a credit card and sign the waiver. Imagine my chagrin when I returned home to find a $502 bill charged to my credit card, from Dollar.

When I called to complain they said I had agreed to an upgrade and by signing the credit card slip I became responsible for the $502, (even though I repeatedly told him NO), and that even if he did lie to me or deceived me, I was still responsible and had to pay. They told me that upselling (after hooking you with low-ball pricing on the internet) is a common practice in the car rental field and they can't control what their ticket agents tell the clients. We disputed the charge with the credit card but finally they won the dispute and apparently we have nothing to do but paying those fees. If you don't want to have trouble when renting a car, NEVER use Dollar Rent A Car. Their customer service is terrible and they will try to charge you as much as they can. It's not worth it.

Keep in mind this is a small to mid-size airport, after waiting 30 minutes in designated pick up point with no shuttle service I called again. The representative answered again put me on hold for 10 minutes came back to phone and then told me they had no vehicles available and could not help me.

I then had to scramble to the other car rental companies at the airport to try and rent another vehicle which took another hour and a half and cost me 3 times the amount of money I had planned on spending. The whole experience was bad enough but in addition to all that, this caused me to be late for the funeral I was driving to that was 3 hours away which was the whole reason I was for the trip anyways. Honeymoon road trip planned, 15 days roundtrip starting at Las Vegas. We found an online good price at dollar rental car (an expected 300 dollar at the end, including everything) and thought it was worth to try. Before writing anything else, I have to say that at the end everything ended well and we paid a fair price. But it all started as hell:

When we were at the counter we are told that we don't have any insurance at all, although we have a basic collision insurance purchased. The employee at the counter keeps saying that this is nothing. "What insurance do I have right now?" - I asked. "Nothing" - he says. So, evidently we ask him to add a basic insurance. Also, we need a second driver, and we agree with paying whatever that is for it is a 15 days trip and we will share the wheel. We have to sign into the screen as if it was the end of the process to get the "simulation" of the contract, because there is no way for him to explain what are we going to get/pay until we sign down.

We see an expected bill of 1.600 (thousand four hundred) dollars. We beg for one hour. We get a 1.300 dollars expected bill after the employee deducted some nonprimary lines. He says "all you see here is insurance, and you need that". He also says that we should call customer service to cancel the basic insurance policy we had purchased, because "you don't want it". We feel devastated. We go down to pick up the car and we find out that we have a higher class than the one requested. We go back to the counter to ask if we could get a lower class, and if that would led to a lower insurance price. The employee says that it is a complimentary upgrade because there are no spare cars of the class we booked. We feel that everything's wrong, and keep begging to find a better solution.

The employee says "come at the end of your tour, I'll see what can I do with the second driver". In my hometown that is against the law: a company has to offer a fixed price for the service beforehand. Yet, in that moment it seemed like he was really being kind and that we were going to have a (small) deduction at the end. We leave the place in the rented car but with a very bad feeling anyway, we were expecting a 300 dollar total bill, and now it was about to be a 1.300 minimum.

Two days later we took one break in our honeymoon to read carefully the contract we have signed. We find out that 40% of the bill is something called "loss damage waiver" which is stated not to be an insurance. It's some sort of responsibility transfer, but nothing that would not have been already covered by an insurance policy. In case of a catastrophe, I don't mind paying myself to Dollar something that the insurance company will pay me back later. Also, it has a monetary limit (not explained to us), so low that it is just a nonsense. So we decided that we don't need it. Another heavy charge is something called Supplemental Liability Insurance, which happens to be an extent of the minimum limits offered by the ordinary car insurance. I don't need any extension, for I don't have an extension of the minimum limits on my own car back home, and I don't plan to run over a bus stop. We don't need that thing either.

Another thing is an "insured and underinsured motorist protection", something that under my knowledge is also covered at some point by the ordinary insurance policy. So we don't need it. Emergency sickness protection. Well, just no thank you, we don't need it. Also, when we were at the counter we were given an example of "a few thousand dollars", and now we read that this ESP has a limit of one thousand dollars. On top of that, I checked inside the car documents, and I find a current valid insurance paper. The car itself has a basic insurance already, it seems. Very basic, but something.

We call the customer service and after half an hour bouncing from one department to another we are able to have a conversation with someone saying that it is no problem to stop the coverages any day in the middle of the tour, so we will not pay anything else since that moment. We say OK, we don't want anything right now, just the basic insurance we have already purchased in the beginning (the one we were told that was worth nothing). Then he says that we cannot do anything over the phone... we have to go a Dollar office and redo the paperwork. Very kindly he informs us that the closest office is 500 miles away.

Next day we decide to do a detour in our trip, and we go to that office. After those hours driving we get there, and then we are told that there is no way they can help us. They can do nothing but writing down in the system that we were there and the car was alright. One hour later, after insisting, we call customer service again. Another half hour bouncing from one department to another. Finally we arrive to someone (different than yesterday) but says that she cannot do anything. We are a thousand miles away from Las Vegas and no way we can go back in the middle of our honeymoon. We are told that once we are to Las Vegas they will not charge since that day that we are doing this request, but we get no paper, no document, and so far we only have one contracted signed agreeing with 15 days of useless and super expensive insurance (and semi-insurance!).

We leave the place really annoyed, and for the next days we keep feeling that we have no power. At the end of our 15 day trip we go to the original Dollar office in Las Vegas, we go straight to the manager, we explain to him what has happened and then we have to have a discussion with him for 20 minutes because he did not agree with our point of view. He kept saying that we had the contract since the very first minute and we could have read it. Which is true. But we are far tired, we don't want to discuss about the lies, the semi-explanations, and the detour, and the bad feeling we have had during our honeymoon. We insist, and finally, we get a clean contract, just as the one planned when we did the online booking, so the manager deducted the entire "insurance" charges since day 1.

It could be said that this was a happy ending. But I would rather prefer to pay a certain amount in the beginning for a fair service and to not care about useless stuff while having a unique time in my life ahead. I don't care if at the end we would have got the entire rental for free. No one will give us back the hours and headaches we have been through. Avoid Dollar.

My husband called customer service that evening and although they were very nice, they told us we had to call the dealership the next day. He called Sunday the 2nd and was told that the matter would be settled when we returned the car on the 7th. We returned to Dollar on Friday October 7th and tried to get a refund. Cody (a new service rep and quite helpful) apologized to me for telling me we had a all-wheel drive after we went out and checked that it was not so. I tried to get the upgrade refunded on our credit card but Travis (Supv) would only give us $75 of the $174.87 and that was negotiating up from a ridiculous $25. I have never encountered a gridlock of this magnitude. I thought that I had left plenty of time to get fuel along the way, return the car, and catch my flight. As it turned out, I just barely made it through TSA in time to catch my flight. I know that I returned the car low on fuel, and expected to pay the $29.95 fuel recovery charge that was my understanding of what would be charged in these circumstances. I felt that it was roughly twice what I would have had to pay for fuel if time would have allowed, but OK I was bringing it back low on fuel. My complaint is that the $29.95 fuel charge wound up actually costing me $103.18!!!

When I called for an explanation of these charges, the response was "We charge $9.95 per gallon of fuel in these cases!" They say that they used 10.8 gallons to fill my car. I feel that these charges are excessive, unfair, and indefensible! I don't even know how they can even be legal. If the lady isn't happy with her job, working with the public is the last place she needs to be. She was rude from the moment we stepped up to her. When we declined the insurance she more or less threaten us that even if a bug hit the windshield we would be responsible. We showed her our insurance card telling her we have coverage and she said our insurance was not acceptable in California. We told her we would fill up upon our return and she again snapped at us it had to be within two miles of the return lot and we must have our receipt. We have no problem with that it was the way she said it.

Then when we picked out our car and stopped to give the paper work and do a walk around looking for dings and scratches. We asked the next lady to do a walk around with us. She rudely informed us that was not her job to baby sit us as we did our walk around. Rude, rude, rude, is all I can say. The care was clean so we won't say anything about that. When we get out to make our selection in the slots we were given we had a choice of a Kia Kia Kia. Same small car just different color. Had a problem with that. The gentleman that greeted us upon our return was super great so won't take anything away from him. Will we rent from Dollar Rental again. Probably just not in Ontario California.

I reserved a car in October for a rental in November. I was concerned about how it would work using a debit card to rent a car, so I called the reservation number and made a reservation after talking to the reservationist... She did tell me a credit check would be ran, but did not tell me that it is their policy that you hold at least a 750 credit score... I specifically told her I would be traveling to Texas from Florida with 2 four year olds and did not want to get there and be stranded. She said they would never let that happen. Well, I get there and they run my credit, and tell me I did not rate high enough to rent a car from them. Nowhere in the contract does it say you need perfect credit to rent from them. By this time all other car places were low on cars and what they did have they were expensive. Never again will I ever rent or recommend Dollar.

I also called a supervisor as I was there waiting two hours for somebody to come get me (with 2 four year olds), to let them know they need to tell people using a debit card that they need perfect credit. She hung up on me, and I was being nice due to not wanting to upset the kids. Please. Don't believe a word these people say, or they will leave you stuck too...

I just received a bill 3 weeks after my Dollar car rental in Florida. For going though the new Cashless Toll booths, Dollar charges you an EXTRA $15 per booth. This is my bill: Toll Charge $1.32, Dollar Admin Fee $15.00. Toll Charge $.79, Dollar Admin Fee $15.00. This goes on and on to run up a total Toll charge of $10.82 and ADMINISTRATIVE FEES $90.00. It looks like there are lawsuits being filed against Dollar and other car rental companies. I have been renting cars for 30 years. I have never seen anything like this. Just educate me BEFORE and then if I agree to the admin fee... fine. The $90 charge is ok. Don't bill me after and state... oh well... it was in the contract. I cannot believe a $.79 Toll fee costs Dollar $15 to bill out and pay. This is a scam and I will never rent from Dollar again.

I have rented from this company 2 times, both times I had problems. The first time in summer 2016, it took me almost an hour to get the insurance taken off before actually getting the car and leaving the building. The 2nd time was returning car on 10/24/2016. I topped the gas off across the street of the airport. I drove the car to the airport and returned it. The next day, I seen a $43 charge on my card. When I called them, they said they had to put a little over 3 gallons of gas in the car. I stated I filled it up across the street. He continued to say it wasn't full... Even if they had to put an eyedropper of gas in the car. $43 for 3 gallons... Unbelievable. Will not use this service again.

I had a booking with Dollar Rent A Car with as I thought all insurances paid. At SF airport told I needed more insurance as if I had an accident and my car was off the road. I would still have to pay for the car with no replacement for all the time it takes to carry out repairs! I said no to this and then they started on tolls $160 for 2 weeks tolls and they outright lied saying the Golden Gate Bridge was now $11 dollars a trip and got their colleagues to confirm this and they are LIARS!

I have been coming to the USA for many years but over the last couple of years had one rip off after another from car rental companies. The last one with Budget adding fake insurances I never asked for and Amex siding with them even though it is a scam. When is some going to be done about this scamming as it has become an epidemic and will only get worse if nothing is done. Shame on you all the officials in SF who turn a blind eye to these legalized crooks! Is there a good rental car company out there and what happened to competition. Car rental companies as Budget, Hertz and Avis is the same company as are Dollar and Thrifty?

Cheaters. I reserved a standard car and paid it from Priceline.com for three days in San Francisco. But when I got there, they just give me a compact car. So I will never do business with this company anymore.

I'm a coach who was traveling with 16 athletes and two other coaches from Texas to Milwaukee Wisconsin and back this past weekend. My assistant coach reserved 3 minivans for our trip. Upon arriving they informed us that each coach had to use their own credit cards (instead of just one) if we didn't want to get charged $13.99/day for each additional driver because all reservations were made by my assistant coach. That is ridiculous. We're with a university and HAVE to use our university card. One of the three coaches doesn't have a university card so in order to avoid the additional charge of $28 for him (for a 2-day rental), he used his personal card ONLY because they assured us we could still just charge ONE credit card upon returning the vehicles. Well a few days later we return the vehicles during normal business hours and there is NO ONE there to help us. In order to make our flight we had to turn the keys into the after hours box.

We tried to call on Monday and of course they've already charged all three cards. On the phone the representative mentioned how we should've created a corporate account, but turns out this still would NOT have solved any issues as we would all still have been charged as additional drivers. STICKING WITH ENTERPRISE FROM HERE ON OUT!!!
