This morning I was checking out car rentals, and saw a good price of 979.40 Australian dollars for a 19 day rental of an SUV from Vancouver airport. So I decided to book and just as I was about to confirm my credit card details, I noticed that the amount was the same, but the currency had changed to Euros. On today's exchange rate, that is a 44% price hike. Pretty sneaky. How many other have been caught by this little scam?

Reading countless reviews has prompted me to post a review here. I was also duped by the Dollar sales rep even though I clearly said I didn't need any extras as I had already paid for the car using my credit card. This didn't stop him and I thought I was signing just to confirm this. It wasn't until I checked my credit card that I saw they had charged me an additional $60. I called them, and emailed them and they used the excuse that I had signed the contract. No matter how often I emailed they did not want to discuss my case any further. I was not going to let them get away with it so contacted my credit card company with all the evidence. IT WORKED! I was credited this amount. It may have taken me longer than expected but I did it. Despicable. I will make sure to be careful when hiring a car in future.

I made it totally 100% clear we didn't want any insurance or extras. For three days rental, I got charged 74.95 extra which I didn't notice. They prey on foreigners knowing they are unsure of the system and have arrived on long flights. As I didn't notice this the first time (seen after viewing credit card) I used them again 5 days later. This time I was sharper. They put on pressure sales techniques to get me to pay for services. Even scribbling on the sheet that I would be ** if I break down. Horrendous service... Never again.

My booking process was easy. Getting the keys and the vehicle were also easy. "Sir, would you like to add insurance." No thank you, my Amex card covers rentals and I also have my own thru State Farm. "Ok sir, just sign at the X on the screen". Prints contract, folds up contract and places it in a folder to give to me. 8 days later, my c.c. statement shows a charge of $177 for insurance.
I call Dollar and politely explain the conversation I had at the desk and I would like a refund. I'm told "We like our customers to read the contract at the desk." Also," you signed it." Told them I trusted what was agreed upon is what was in the contract. If they want customers to read it, then put it in front of them and go over it with them. Instead they fold it up and hand it to you in a folder. Have the customer check the box of any extras they wanted to add. "Our customers complained about how long it takes when they have to do it themselves". Are you kidding me! Told her that I know commission is earned on "extras" that are sold. That is shameful to pull that on customers. She said they could refund 50% of the charges and that was the best they could do. I am still in disbelief that a company would do this to their customers, and not even try to make the situation right. Lesson learned... never again Dollar... never again.

I felt I was scammed by their counter representative when the person inserted these additional charges. My husband made the initial reservation but was unable to get the car because his credit card won't go through because it was an out of state transaction. The total cost of my husband's reservation was $260 without the additional charges of insurance, roadside assistance and additional driver. This reservation was transferred to me instead due to the problem with my husband's credit cards. I signed the contract confident that I was getting the same price as my husband's reservation without reviewing the contract. Well, this contract/reservation, as it turned out ballooned, to over $500 because of the additional charges that were tucked in without my knowledge.
My advice to customers: before you sign, review the charges. These counter representatives will take advantage of you at your critical moment of confusion, tiredness and business. I will never, ever transact business with this company in the future. I also gave warnings to all my friends, relatives and the company I work for of this unprofessional practices.

Unfortunately, this is the second bad review I have given Dollar, running on East 22nd Street in NYC. I've just spent 1/2 an hour discussing with three different people so forgive this brief review: Rented and EZ Pass with car for $21/day. First toll I went through was a cashless toll, i.e., no humans to take your money or gate that rises when you go through it with EZ Pass. Second one I tried to get through, the gate did not go up, police took EZ saying that Dollar had not paid.
When I returned the car, Dollar refunded me the $21 charge, but the other day, I got a notice for the first toll PLUS a $15 admin fee. But because they refunded me and because the first toll was cashless, I am forced to pay this admin fee. If I had them recharge me for the EZ now, they would remove the admin fee - problem is that I paid all the other tolls after the police took my EZ Pass. Crazy circular logic with no customer service logic to it. Bottom line, if they're cheap, rent from them, but if it's a close call with another rental agency, choose the other one. One PS to this - the first customer service rep I spoke to sighed when I explained and felt I should not be charged. Sadly, not the last woman I spoke to. Drive safely, but not with Dollar if you can avoid it!

After declining all the additional insurance and electronically signing the contract the agent put the paperwork in the envelope and said you're all done just go pick your car from either row 5 or 6. We put the paperwork in the glovebox and used the car for 4 days and returned it. The return area is very dark so when the return agent said, "You're all done," and put the paperwork back in the envelope you couldn't read it and left. It wasn't until I got home and saw what was done. I called Dollar and they said that I signed and agreed and there was nothing they would do.

The actual rental process went fine. We picked our car up from the airport, guy at the counter was nice, and we returned our car after our trip - no worries. Fast forward to three months later, and I notice my credit card is over the limit. I check my account to find out why, because I haven't used that card since the trip. They've been charging my credit card every month for the past three months! I've disputed the charges, but I may end up having to cancel my card just to get them to stop. I have no explanation as to why. My husband is the process of trying to get to the bottom of it, but when searching for a car rental, take heed. There are this many negative reviews about this company for a reason.

The car rental itself was fine. They are cheap. They have to make a profit some other way. With me they chose to add insurance to my rental that I declined. I should have noticed, but I had just landed after 14 hr travel and it was 4 am in the timezone I came from. I think it's outrageous that representatives have the nerve to check yes on products where you told them no. That you *have* to check they actually do as you tell them. And get backed by their company about it also. I would call it fraudulent. Since it's a shared counter, this behavior will also affect any rentals at Thrifty Car Rental.

This past weekend my husband and I rented a car when we landed in New Orleans. The rate I reserved the car for when I booked through Southwest was $107 for four days. When I went to turn the car in they wanted me to pay almost $500! They claimed I turned in the car a day late (it was an hour late), and that bumped up the cost from $31 a day to $48 a day for the car. The hour late rental charge should've been $18 an hour, but they claimed otherwise. They also charged $7 a day for an "extra passenger", and there were countless other charges on the final bill that were not disclosed at the time I made the reservation.
When I tried to pay at the end of the rental period they were not able to correctly run my card. After 15 minutes of trying one card, I gave them another one to run and it worked. This morning I logged into my bank account and found that I was charged twice. I was able to get my rental down to $358 which is still more than double the quoted price. The staff I worked with when dropping off the car was rude and completely incompetent. I will never rent from this company again!

My husband and I booked a car through Dollar for our honeymoon. The clerk at the desk was short but polite to the ** customer in front of us, and we thought nothing of it as we just wanted to get our car and go. When she heard my husband's accent and his brown skin she immediately treated us differently. She was rude and talked to us like we were children. Repeatedly she pushed add ons that we did not want. We repeatedly said we did not want them. Instead of hearing us, she proceeded to explain, like we were mentally challenged that we needed an upgrade and additional insurance. We again, said we were not interested and we just wanted to get what we reserved. She still did not listen to us.
At this point, I asked why she was being so rude. She snapped, told us to wait in the corner like naughty children and got on the phone with her manager saying she had rude customers she could not handle (mind you, we never raised our voices, we never said a rude thing to her). At this point, we took our business to a different agency and got a car from them. The clerk there treated us completely differently - basically treated us like human beings. As we were leaving, the Dollar clerk started raving about how she gets so many positive reviews from her customers and that we were the problem even though all we did was ask for the service we reserved and we asked why we were being treated in such a rude fashion. It is unacceptable and it is racist. No person should be treated in such a manner. We will never use Dollar again.

Do not use this company for your car hire. I hired from Las Vegas and when I went to pick the car up was advised to take out all sorts of 'extras'. I declined and the guy behind the desk was not happy at all. I was warned that the hard sell would take place by Rentals.com and to just refuse what they were trying to sell. When I returned the car to Las Vegas after doing approx 2000 miles driving up to Yellowstone over a 10 day period, there was some mud spatter on the sills just behind the wheels. On my last day I travelled through some snow and mud had been kicked up by the tyres. When I pulled into the car hire return area of the airport I was told I'd be billed to get the mud off the car. I asked how much they were going to charge. They hit me with a bill of $100.
I told them I'd take the car back out and run it through a car wash. They refused to allow me to clean it myself. I'd also taken the car back about 6 hours early. Two guys then became a bit heavy handed when I went into the trunk and pulled out a cloth to clean the car. They were having none of it. I'm going to seek legal advice on this issue and I have photos that I took of the car when it was dropped off. I even asked for the 'Dollar henchmen (and that's exactly how they acted)' to call the police to see if they could help sort this out. They refused. I had a fantastic 3 week holiday in the US. Got married in Yellowstone, but the holiday was spoilt by this crooked company. DO NOT HIRE FROM THEM! I'm from the UK and our car hire companies just don't carry out their business like this.

I rented a car in Vancouver, B.C., from Dollar. The return of that car is the worst customer-service experience I've ever had. I picked the car up on a dark basement of a parking garage downtown. Upon return the next day at the airport, the Dollar inspector did a thorough damage-search, found a small chip in the lower left-hand corner of the windshield (about the size of my little fingernail) and also found a very-small dot (about the size of a pencil lead) in the windshield on the driver's side and up toward the top of the windshield.
The inspector wrote those two items up as damage I caused and said I'd have to pay to fill those in. I said those two items did not happen when I drove the car. The inspector said "I didn't note those defects when picking up the car." I said I'd never be able to see those in that dark facility -- and wouldn't have viewed those small items as significant in any event. I assured the inspector that those items did not happen on my watch. Later, I received a $25 extra-charge in the mail. That's about the right cost for filling those items in. So I paid it.
Now, I'm getting collection letters for $397 to replace the window. I've explained the situation to the collection agency and said there is no way they needed to replace the window for those two defects. But they won't let it go. This is a fraudulent attempt to collect money. Here's guessing such fraudulent activity is standard procedure for them. I'll never use Dollar again. The Collection Agency is D & A Collection Corporation dba D&A Group Services of Mississauga, ON: their "D&A file no." for my account is **.

I rented a car at Baltimore Airport on Sept 05 and returned on Sept.15. At the counter I was offered the Tool Transponder like the E-Z pass and I accepted but failed in asking for its cost. I was surprised when I received a bill for $ 127.96 on my credit card for TOLL FEES so I start calling and e-mailing every given phone and address asking for a detail of those charges. I just got a Turn Around and no direct answers until I threat them with putting a Stop Payment in my Amex Card if I don't receive a satisfactory reply...
On Sept 23rd on my last call, finally I got the phone for customer service, where they inform me about their Exorbitant Charge of $15 and change per day just for the transponder. I just used to cross twice the Bay bridge, which should I had paid Cash, would have cost me only $8.00. This is a fraudulent business practice, if I have ever seen it. They hide behind this fee on the "contract" in tiny print towards the end and of course you have to sign the touch pad and agree to the wording of the contract before they let you actually look at it. Clearly they encourage (require) their counter people not to mention their outrageous fees. And clearly they don't want anyone noticing that they are going to be charging this, by making sure no one reads the contract until after it has been signed. WHAT A RIP-OFF. I'LL never again use DOLLAR Rent a Car in my life.

I purchased a pre-paid rental as it appeared to be the way to get the best rate. My reservation was ready when I arrived at the airport and I was asked if I wanted insurance on the vehicle. The rate that was quoted verbally seemed reasonable and I went with it. When I returned the vehicle, the bill that I was asked to pay was equivalent to the cost I had agreed to pay for the full 3-day rental. I told the attendant that there must be a mistake. He told me that Dollar does not do pre-paid rentals and that my bill was due. Later my credit card was billed for the pre-paid rental and for the amount I was charged on site at the end of my rental. After challenging the charges with American Express, Dollar came back with documentation stating that the pre-paid charge of $164 was for my rental (compact car) and that the $162 charge was for the insurance. It was very deceptive and I will never use them again.

A while ago I reserved a car at Dollar in advance. To be picked up at Jacksonville International Airport (Florida) on the 22nd of July. A reservation charge of €591,54 was paid with my credit card on the 22nd of May 2016. That's OK, just how things work. However, once I arrived at the Dollar desk at Jacksonville Airport, the same credit card was declined by the Dollar staff (despite it having plenty of fund). The reason being that the name on the credit card only showed the initials instead of the complete first name. They said they could not use that card. Ridiculous, because nobody in the Netherlands has a credit card with the complete first name on the card. I had other credit cards with me, but all only had initials, so no car from Dollar.
Since I desperately needed a car (how can you travel in the Deep South without a car?), I had no other option but to go to another car rental (Hertz), which did accept my card without any problem and they did a great job by offering me a nice car at the same price Dollar initially had offered (which was quite attractive). But what about the already paid €591,54? Well, I had to make a phone-call by myself (why not the Dollar staff in Jacksonville?) and subsequently, I had to do a lot of paperwork. Finally, after 20 days, I got only €531,54 back due to an administration fee of €50! Administration fee?! They refused my credit card because of their terrible administration process and now I have to pay for that? Dollar is a terrible car rental company. Never, never, never I will choose Dollar again. And what about Hertz in Jacksonville? They did a great job on the 22nd of July. Great and very friendly staff, trying to find the best solution for the problems made by Dollar.

Then and only then was paperwork produced which was not shown to me and slipped into a folder and hidden from me. It was only on my return to the airport that I found I had been charged an extra $50 for insurances that I had not agreed too. I have complained and the response has been, "You agreed to it and we have your signature." This is the most deceptive and deceiving actions I have received from a so called customer focusing organisation. Don't use them and check what you're being charged. On July 15, 2016, I rented a vehicle online in the amount of $182.80, however, the vehicle I rented was no longer in stock. We were a lesser vehicle but that was not going to work because I was traveling to Atlanta with four other business associates. My husband sometimes had to help me in translating Spanish into English. The bottom line is that we had paid $182.80 via internet and it was going cost me another $271.32. I was not treated in a professional manner by your staff. Secondly, she could not understand my English. She should have assisted your customer that spoke Spanish.
I could not pay that amount because I have not have that amount on the credit card. I went to National Rental and I was treated in a very professional manner unlike your staff that was not willing to work with a customer, me. I found the vehicle needed to travel with National for $20 more that paid online ($205). The customer service was very professional and they worked with the customer, me. I would never recommend your company Dollar Rent A Car to any of my business associates or my customers. In fact, I will tell all my business associates, my customers, family and friends never to rent from your company. Remember that bad news travels fast which is bad for marketing. I cancelled via online and I have yet to receive the reimbursement to my credit card. The account was ** in the amount of $271.32.

I checked online that I don't need (Navigation system and roadside assistance since I have my own from all-state insurance which I can use on any car). I wanted the car at 5.30am and they were late by 20 mins. Calling their customer care was so unhelpful. All the lady said was that I should have read all the fine print when receiving the keys. My husband discovered he left his driving license at home. We explained this to the gentleman we spoke to around 6pm on Sunday and informed him we could obtain an eligibility certificate from the DVLA on Monday 8th August. He spoke with his manager who requested that he be sent an email. Your customer service agent allowed the car to be put in my name. He discussed the toll charges which we agreed to and he then spoke to us about the refueling charges. He claimed that it was the cheapest option and the cost was $38.85. I gave him my credit card for the deposit and signed for that. He went over the bill and highlighted all the costs. We asked if there was a charge for adding spouse and was told no. We went to choose a car and were very disappointed that there was 4 to choose from and not ONE was American!!
We returned Monday 8th August and spoke with a lady and explained the situation. We had gotten the proof of license via the website. She and the manager informed us that an email was not correct and they required a fax from the DVLA. We were vexed by this as we had been told the wrong information. We spoke with the DVLA and they faxed the certificate a few times but hadn't been received when we left. My husband was put on the car agreement, she retook my card for the deposit and requested I sign to agree he could drive the car. We gave her the email in case there was an issue with the eligibility certificate and she held our numbers on file.
Whilst we were discussing with family the refueling costs I looked at the information she put in the folded envelope only to discover that the bill was for just over $500. There was a charge for AOO $260. After Googling it we discovered it was an additional driver costs. The female agent at NO stage told us there was a fee, as we would have just left it. The other confusing issue is that on the second bill the refuel was $25.75. How can you have different prices considering your own literature states what you put on the bill is what we will be charged! So why was one for over $38 and the second for $25?
Another complaint to be made is whilst driving on the last full day the low tire pressure light illuminated and gave us a fright. We took it to the garage and discovered that the front driver tire pressure was only 21 and the rear driver side was 26 and not the recommended 31-32. There was no way that the tire should have ever gotten that low so quickly and it make us wonder how well they are maintained.
We returned the car and spoke with a man at the desk and informed him of the above issues. He spoke with his manager who came up with the following - Option one- reduce $260 costs to £130. Option 2 - make a full statement at the desk and they will look at the CCTV which records sound and Dollar would review this and let us know in due course. Well considering we had a flight to catch we only had one option as we didn't have time to make a full statement. I was not happy about this at all. I emailed them with a complaint. They replied snarkily and refunded us $13 as a goodwill gesture. My parents-in-law had a bill of over $600 with "extra" charges. DO NOT USE. If You DO make sure you know EXACTLY what your bill will be BEFORE you sign.

Dollar Car Rental/Hire are ripping off customers whose flights are either cancelled or more than 30 mins delayed. DO NOT USE DOLLAR HIRE CARS. I booked a car for my brother-in-law in Pisa Italy in July 2016 as I had a credit card. We also booked it a day early so I could show my credit card for them to hire the car as I was also travelling to PISA and collecting another hire car. Their flight was the next day after the day I booked the car hire as I didn't exactly know when I booked it, what exact day they were going to arrive, and as I was going to join them to collect it to use my credit card for the booking it made sense at the time.
Their easyJet flight was cancelled and no other EJ flights were coming out for another 3 days so they got a refund for their flight and booked a different flight to come out but to Bologna instead not PISA. As soon as we knew about the cancellation he informed Dollar who were the car hire people through Auto Europe. They said to him "Tough. Even if your flight was 30 mins late you would forfeit your rental". He said as we were in PISA we would pick up the car instead. They refused this as it was booked in my brother-in-law's name not mine. We have lost £500 nearly over this and it's utterly disgraceful. Because Dollar are not part of the European Car Rental Conciliation Service I have absolutely no comeback.
I called AMEX as I paid using my Amex card but Amex advised me that their Terms and Conditions allow them to wriggle out of it because they actually reject refunds in July and August and there was nothing they could do even though they did their best to help me. How is that caveat in their terms allowed under consumer protection law?! easyJet are refusing compensatory refunds under force majeure since the flights had to be cancelled due to air traffic control at PISA. So the consumer is stuffed through terrible consumer protection which is seemingly allowed for big rip off companies like Dollar.
NEVER USE DOLLAR CAR HIRE if you care about money, only ever use a member of the European Car Rental Conciliation Service. Check the terms and conditions on refunds BEFORE you make the booking as if your flight is delayed you could forfeit your entire costs! There needs to be an international car hire ombudsman or any company in the EU offering car hire services should have to join a body and adhere to EU consumer protection rules.

When I arrived off the plane there were no cars, and the wait was 3 hours. Having a 6 hour drive ahead of me, I went to Budget where I had to pay $580.00. Dollar will not reimburse me even though they broke contract. After contacting BBB, Dollar lied and said I declined the car then returned but there was no cars left. Well I never returned once I had left. They had a lot of customers going to budget. Dollar gave all our cars away, to people or they over booked. But do not rent from them, they are bad business.

I have spent almost $3k with Dollar for my rentals. I call Dollar, and clerk says, "Well maybe you rented the wrong kind of vehicle." Where does it state that only some types of vehicles qualify for rewards? I logged in online and requested Dollar contact me and give me my due points. Don't rent from Dollar Rent a Car. We rented a car online with Dollar. When we got to the airport in Atlanta Georgia, we were worn out. My wife had just gone through an operation and 30 x-ray treatments for cancer and was sitting on a electric cart. A gentleman named STEVEN and I use the term GENTLEMAN (he was not) asked to help us took our rental number and brought up the agreement. He asked about the insurance which I told him we had complete coverage with our own insurance. He then informed us that we needed the damage waiver which would be $35.00 a day and said IT WAS A LAW IN GEORGIA that we had to have that insurance. I told him I could not afford that much and that that would double the cost of the rental. STEVEN said there was a lower waiver amount of $28.00 a day. I am 700 miles from home with no car now and a wife that is hurting, so I signed, and we left.
The next day I called Dollar and other rental car places and found out that the waiver was not needed. When I called Dollar about the waiver I was told to see the agent when we returned the car. When we returned the car, the waiver was on the contract and I asked the lady in the return area to tell me where the manager was, she said he was not there at that time and that I should not pay it when I got the bill. When the bill came in through the credit card company I was told I signed for it and that it was binding. Those people (STEVEN) LIED to me, they have my last DOLLAR.

Dollar Rent A Car uses the classic bait and switch technique for ripping off their clients. The offer a price online if you pre-pay then they say you will pay a remaining balance when you get to the counter. When you get to the counter they tack on extra charges that you can't determine and have you sign an electronic device under duress that says you agree to pay these fees. When you write the company to get an explanation or complain about the charges they will not take the charges off. In our case we came into the Dollar Rent A Car late at night, there was an hour wait before they got to us serviced. They first tried to sell us a bigger car which we refused, then they charged us $150 more than my printed out contract said we should pay.
When we asked why we were paying more, they offered no explanation. They showed annoyance with us and just said we had to pay it. We had already been arguing with the guy for 30 min, and felt we were holding up the line even more. We finally signed the little two inch electronic box where they later said we agreed to pay Optional Coverage which we still cannot get an explanation of what they are. We felt there was no choice for us. It was either sign the paperwork or go to another car rental place. It was already very late so we just signed the paperwork so we could go on. Everyone seemed to have been going through the same experience and left exasperated. Wish I could have read the review before we rented the car.

About a week after returning the car to the St. Anne, MO Dollar-Rent-A-Car franchise in March 2016, I received notification that there was damage to the vehicle that I rented. The cost of repair exceeded $1500. The images that they sent showed damage to the undercarriage that only could have occurred while the vehicle was moving. I was not in an accident over my 2-3 day rental and did not even drive over any significant potholes. My assessment is that this is a clear case of fraud. The counter person was pushing the extra insurance. Though my current insurance and credit card will cover the cost of repair, I still feel like a victim and believe that we need to continue to document the potentially illegal practices from this franchise.

I rented the car online and it was pre-paid. When I arrived at the St Petersburg Airport Dollar Car Rental they tried to convince me that I should pay a $150 toll fee pass for the 2 wks I was staying there. I said I had a gps, was staying local and set the GPS to no toll roads. Also, I know, that the toll roads are marked and at most there is a pay plaza. Otherwise, for $5 I could buy a toll pass and load up funds on the internet site if I decided I needed one. They argued with me and said that because I refused to pay the $150 they were taking $250 out of my credit card as a deposit until I returned. It turns out that Dollar Rental car is the ONLY car rental agency that does this. This is bad practice. The car rental already came with insurance AND I have personal insurance in addition. They cashed in on the $250 and returned it back at their leisure. This should be investigated. Rent from another company if you can, as I sure will not rent from them again.

Worst rental car experience ever. We waited more than 30 minutes at LAX for the pick-up van (in the interval, at least two and sometimes three of every other company's vans came by), and then another 40 in line at the office, even though we had a reservation. The staff was rude, both when we picked the car up and when we dropped it off - not just one employee, but several.
And while we paid for a "navigation system," what they delivered was an android cell phone. If I had realized it before we finished the checkout and got to the car, I would have turned it down - and just relied on my iPhone. In the end, I had to use my iPhone for most navigating anyway: the screen on the unit Dollar rented me was too dark to see in daylight, the screensaver cut in every five minutes, requiring me to touch it (not terribly safe, in traffic), and the battery died after a couple of hours (even though it was plugged in to the car's cigarette lighter) and wouldn't recharge sufficient to run the damn thing. Complete waste of money. I complained about this when we returned the car, but was told (rather rudely) that I would have to take it up with corporate headquarters.

At NO POINT was this daily charge spelled out to me... All I got was a digital pad to sign on that I was accepting a damage loss waiver. WATCH THESE SNAKES!!! Summer in Anchorage, car rentals are slim. I reserved two weeks prior, almost none available. Was quoted over $1400 for 11 days!!!! I needed a car, so I reserved one. Flight delayed until 2AM arrival. At counter I told the agent I did not need additional insurance since I am covered with my personal cars coverage. The agent busied themselves with the paperwork, then slid the papers to sign and again review.
The rental agent reviewed the contract mentioning the "basic " and a road service number etc... Since I had made it clear I didn't want additional insurance when they ran the choices by us again and he mentioned basic, I assumed that this was their term for renter supplied insurance, which is what I made clear from the start as what I wanted.
2AM, dead tired, I CLEARLY STATED I DID NOT WISH TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL INSURANCE, but they video tape the entire transaction. To make matters worse, the car was inspected with the agent in the lot. After we accepted he locked up and left, we loaded the car, and when we started it we then noticed the low air warning light was on on the dash. NOBODY THERE, tires looked ok, drove 2.5 hours to our destination, 2 days later, FLAT TIRE!!
Called the number they highlighted on the envelope should any troubles arise, I did, and wasted all day trying to get the tire fixed. The driver found the screw that was broke off and plugged the tire. While reviewing the paperwork I noticed the tagged on insurance, called, was directed to simply bring the charge to the manager's attention to have the charge removed. Well I did.The Manager Brendon ** said he could not do anything until he reviewed the tape. I knew right then that after traveling a few time zones away that this was not going to go well.
Here is the reply: "I have reviewed the footage of your rental on 07/22/2016. Our rental agent asked if you wanted the complete, standard, or basic protection. After looking at the provided protection plan display on the counter, you replied, 'Just basic.' As noted on the display, the basic protection is comprised of the roadside/trip saver, and the loss damage waiver. The rental agent then mentioned at two other points of the rental process that your vehicle was fully covered with the loss-damage waiver, and provided you with a card and number for the roadside assistance. Due to this information, I would not be able to remove the coverage from the contract. I do however understand that information can be misconstrued, especially late at night and after long flights, so I went ahead and applied a 10% discount to the time and mileage for a total of $130.70 off your rental."
SO, they needed to review the tape, they TOTALLY IGNORED that I clearly stated on more than one occasion that I did not want to purchase additional insurance, but since this unethical agent then tricked me into saying basic in the review that obligated me to the purchase. Totally ignored my clearly stated wishes to not buy, hangs me on a "Gotch" trick question to a term that means nothing to anyone other than an employee, This is clearly a scam!
It gets better. I appealed to the corporate offices, and they stated that since this is an "Independent location" there is nothing they can do!!!! Folks to be charged over $1800 for a damn rollerskate that was not in roadworthy condition at the time of pick up, and then refusing to consider the actual conversation that happened at the time is way beyond an honest mistake. Avoid DOLLAR Rental cars, they are a bunch of snakes!

The billing process was horrible and I was overcharged by $100 compared to what I was quoted online and the estimated charge on the original bill I received at the counter when first picking up the vehicle. I then received another estimated charge when leaving the gate after picking up the vehicle, and then yet another bill with a different amount when I returned the vehicle. I had declined all insurance because I have Geico which covers me for everything. And there were no damages to the car and we returned it with a full tank of gas.
The people at the counter were unwilling to help us and did not reduce the charges. They told us that the extra charges were because there were two drivers listed on the car. However, the man who first checked us in assured us that we would NOT be charged for a second driver. Obviously that was not the case because now they told us that in fact we WERE charged for two drivers. Dollar Rent A Car is a scam. My husband had to travel to Tampa and I booked the flight and car on Expedia.com to make things easier for him so he could get to where he was going quickly. Everything was PREPAID, including the extra insurance for $10/day. The car was not just booked online, it was paid for in advance (i.e. credit card charged).
At the Dollar car rental desk he showed his license, insurance card and they asked for a credit card even though it was prepaid. He obliged, but he didn't travel with the same credit card that was used for the online payment. In fact, we carefully read all the paperwork before and after submitting the payment for the car and this was not requested online or in the subsequent confirmation information that was sent via email. However, they insisted that the same credit card was needed or they would not give him a car.
He was told that they would let him have a car with a brand new reservation using the credit card he had in his possession, but he would incur the full rental fee again. That would have been fine if they would have agreed to issue a refund of the money that we already paid, but they said that Dollar does not provide refunds for prepaid reservations as long as a car was available for him to take, so no refund for the initial payment would be issued.
The agents and even manager at the Tampa airport location were completely inflexible and not even willing to try and be fair. But then, they already had our money and I suppose they didn't feel the need to help a customer, even though we followed all the instructions that we were sent when they took our money online.
In the end, I called Expedia flaming mad and (after almost 2 hours on the phone) Expedia agreed to refund us for the car rental and the extra insurance we purchased. Hopefully, Expedia will be able to get reimbursement from Dollar. In the meantime, my husband went over to Enterprise and explained what happened. Not only did they match the price, but they were pleasant and helpful. Needless to say, we will never ever rent from Dollar or their parent company again.

I rented a Ford Fiesta from Dollar Rent A Car at its facility at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. The purpose of the rental was to drive with my daughter to several cities (Chicago, South Bend, St. Louis) so she could do college tours. The period of the rental was from July 6 to July 10. I duly returned the car on the morning of July 10 to Dollar's facility at O'Hare. A Dollar employee checked the car in on his hand-held machine and gave me a receipt (unfortunately I did not keep the receipt). My daughter and I then caught our plane, flying from O'Hare to Baltimore BWI Airport on the morning of July 10 (we live in suburban Maryland). I thought this was the end of my uneventful experience with Dollar. I was wrong.
The week of July 18, when I was on vacation in Duck, North Carolina, I got a couple of voicemail messages on my cell phone from Dollar's Vehicle Control Department in Oklahoma City. The callers alleged that I had not returned the Fiesta I had rented. I returned one of these calls and informed an employee in the Vehicle Control Department that I had returned the vehicle at Dollar's facility at Chicago O'Hare. The employee said she would call the facility at Chicago O'Hare, tell them I had returned the car, direct them to look for it on their lot, and close the transaction. I received a couple of more messages from the Vehicle Control Department, but did not return them, because I had already informed them that I had returned the vehicle.
Last night, July 26, I received a letter, dated July 17, from the Vehicle Control Department which, among other things: demanded that I return the Ford Fiesta immediately to the Dollar facility at Chicago O'Hare, informed me that failure to return the vehicle as instructed may result in the vehicle being reported stolen; and threatened legal action to recover the vehicle. This led me to begin thinking how I could prove that I had returned the vehicle, despite the absence of a receipt.
I had used my American Express card to rent the vehicle, so I called American Express to see if Dollar had charged my account on July 10 when I returned the vehicle. The very helpful person at American Express informed me that there had been no charges from Dollar on July 10, but that Dollar had charged my account on July 21 in the amount of $1,865.75. The amount you see is correct: one thousand, eight hundred and sixty-five dollars, and twenty-five cents more than fifty cents. This morning (July 27) I called Dollar's Customer Service Department to dispute this charge. The Customer Service employee informed me that their records showed I had "returned" the Ford Fiesta to Dollar's facility at Chicago O'Hare on July 21 instead of July 10; hence the astronomical charge. This, of course, is physically impossible because on July 21 I was on vacation in Duck, North Carolina and was nowhere near Chicago O'Hare.
I have now sent Dollar's Customer Service Department: my flight itinerary showing that I flew out of Chicago O'Hare on the morning of July 10 (instead of driving around the Midwest for eleven days in a Ford Fiesta), a hotel reservation showing that I stayed at an airport hotel at Chicago O'Hare the night of July 9 and checked out the morning of July 10 and a Dollar reservation showing that I was quoted a car rental total of $198.44, not $1,865.75.
I am waiting to receive my American Express credit card bill for the period from July 10 through July 21, which will show a charge by the airport hotel on the morning of July 10, the bag charge I paid the airline on the morning of July 10, the airport parking charge I paid at the airport parking lot at Baltimore BWI on the afternoon of July 10, and my whereabouts on particular days from July 10 through July 21. I am also waiting now for a response from Dollar with respect to the information I've already sent them. Perhaps their theory will be that on the morning of July 10 I ditched the Ford Fiesta in a secluded area near Chicago O'Hare, flew back to Baltimore, drove my own car down to North Carolina for vacation, and then made my way from vacation in North Carolina to Chicago O'Hare by plane or car just so I could return the Fiesta on July 21.
I can pinpoint three specific acts of gross incompetence, systemic breakdown, or worse on the part of Dollar and its employees: Dollar failed to correctly check me in and record my delivery of the Ford Fiesta on July 10; Dollar left the vehicle sitting on its parking lot for eleven days without anyone bothering to figure out where the vehicle had come from and why it was sitting there; and when the vehicle was finally "discovered" on July 21, a Dollar employee came up with the bright idea of recording that I had "returned" the vehicle on July 21, instead of simply returning the vehicle to inventory and closing out my rental transaction as of the real return date of July 10. One wonders how a company operated this way can keep up with its competitors. Dollar management, are you reading this?

My family went to Orlando on vacation and used Dollar Rent A Car like we often have. The line was long and each guest seemed to be taking a long time to get processed but we were excited and willing to wait. Even though we had a reservation for a car, the person helping us was very insistent that we should add the toll option to the car which includes a maximum of $10 in tolls per day for $50 extra. We normally don't like to add charges just for convenience but the guy told us that 1) there were tolls everywhere and they weren't well marked and 2) many didn't have attendants to take cash and 3) if we didn't prepay, the fines would be $100. He noticed that I was surprised and said, "I know! It's highway robbery!" He said the tolls were everywhere and even as close as Disney World. Best of all, he told us to look for a SunPass lane and drive through when the light was red (it's a laser). He said it's the opposite of what you'd think.
None of this made sense, but we were driving across the state to St. Petersburg, so we decided to be safe and get the toll option. We had a bad feeling that we'd paid $50 for no good reason. Sure enough, we drove from the airport to our hotel and used $1 to ride the clearly marked toll road with cash booths. Then we went 2 hours southwest to Sarasota (only one toll of $1.25 with cash booths).
All in, we spent about $5 for tolls on the trip. What a waste of money. The $50 is about the difference in price between Dollar and other car rental companies. Looking back, I wonder if the hard sell approach was the reason it took so long to process each person in line. Highway robbery is right - but it's from Dollar not the state of Florida.

We rented a car from Dollar at their Tampa Florida Airport in July of 2016. We knew we wouldn’t be using the car a great deal so we rented a compact and we paid a bit more because of the airport location. On the way to our hotel, an hour from the airport, the air conditioning stopped working in the car, a bit warm in July in Tampa! When we got to the hotel I called Dollar with a simple request, could they drop off a replacement car at the hotel as I really didn’t want to take another two plus hours out of my vacation to drive back and forth to the airport for something that was not my fault. The original customer service representative, Ashley, was the only bright spot in this terrible company.
She attempted to help me and put me through to Caleb at Roadside Assistance. Caleb was completely inept and basically told me that the only answer was to drive the car back to the airport for an exchange. I work in the automotive repair business and told him that the car could be unsafe to drive as there was a slight odor coming from the engine compartment when the air conditioning cut out. Caleb smugly told me that he knew, by phone, that the car was safe to drive. What a complete idiot! I asked to speak to his supervisor and he refused to connect me. I asked to speak to someone at the airport location and he refused to put me through and would not give me the phone number to that location. Needless to say I was LIVID!
I told him he was incompetent and hung and called back to customer service and fortunately was connected back to Ashley. Ashley attempted to reach the airport location on my behalf and after an hour of trying she called me back to tell me that they refused to take her call, a fellow employee. This company SUCKS from top to bottom and I felt sorry for Ashley, who was genuinely trying to take care of customer. She deserves to work for a better company than this despicable excuse for a customer service company. She took the extra effort and called up a location near our hotel where they had some rental cars and asked the manager, Kenny, if he would swap out our car which he agreed to do if we could drive there, which we did. Contacted toll administration and paid the toll they had on file over the phone. Then received an invoice from Dollar Rental for 12 other tolls between $.50-$1.99 adding up to $15. However, Dollar added a $15 administrative fee to each toll bringing the total to $120 which they are charging to my credit card now on file. I attempted to the toll administration again directly but the tolls were no longer on record as Dollar paid the $15 and is charging me $120. I have placed calls to Dollar each time moving up a supervisory level and have contacted the Attorney General to lodge a complaint.

I recently used Orbitz for personal travel, my confirmation number was: **. I was billed $208.16 by Orbitz for a rental car in Kona, HI. When I got to the Dollar Rent A Car at the airport, they told me that what I booked was for $208.16 PER DAY and tried to charge me over $1000 in addition to the $208.16. The Orbitz customer service rep on the phone said that Dollar told them I wasn't happy with the car I selected on Orbitz and chose to upgrade, which is 100% not true. I booked any available car. When I tried to book the car that I rented, any 5 seat car, I was told that it was $208.16 PER DAY, for a total of over $1000. I told them that I couldn't do that and they told me the cheapest car that I could get would be an additional $575.00, so that's what I paid.
The worker at Dollar told me that the $208.16 that I paid on Orbitz was a deposit and would come off of my card, which it hasn't. Dollar tells Orbitz that I agreed to the terms, so now it's out of Orbitz's hands. I've gotten nowhere with Dollar. If I didn't pay the $575, the agent wasn't going to rent a car to me, so I would've been stuck in Kona without a car at 9 PM at night with my family waiting outside. They refuse to give me a refund or credit.

Reserved a full-size car online; I had arrived on-time and had to wait almost 10 min while another customer was being helped. Dollar only had one person to assist a line of 3. When the lady finished with customer I approached the counter. She was on a 2-way radio and told me, "I'll be back..." I waited another 10 minutes for her to return to the counter!! Really!! Upon her return she tells me, "Sorry, but I had to correct a problem with the last person." Ok, after going through the rental details I'm told these horror stories about wrecks, rentals being hit by other cars, etc. I had declined the insurance and agreed to fill the gas tank before I return it. She says, "If you do that you MUST provide a receipt proving you got gas within 10-miles of this location." I said, "Are you serious???" She said, "Yes, because of some other renter stating that he drove 50 miles after filling up to return the vehicle."
First of all I'm NOT that person, Secondly, how in world is the person checking the car in going to know what filling stations are within 10-miles??? I proceeded to get the vehicle (limit choices). Several of the cars had a cigarette smoke odor, others had a sweaty smell... Unbelievable!! I had chosen a Ford Fusion. Again I had to wait about 10 more minutes to get checked out. The car's barcode was scanned and the clerk tells me, "I can't let you drive this car!" "Why!?" I said. She said, "It's scheduled for maintenance." OMG, really... more of MY time wasted.
Now, I have to park the Ford, get out, walk back another 300 feet to select another vehicle. Overall I spent almost an hour trying to rent a car as with other competitors it would have taken only about 15 min. Rent, get my car & go. Upon returning the vehicle, I was expecting to show my gas receipt. I was never asked... all I was told was, "Have a nice evening..." So frustrating!! 2nd time I've rented from Dollar thinking the overall process would be better... NOT!! You won't be getting my business again.

Good day. I have a huge concern. I might be a victim of attempted fraud OR it might just be a clerical / system error. Either way, I'm deeply concerned. It's 3am & I was awakened by an email from Dollar Car Rental. It was a bill charges amounting to $560. I NEVER rented a car from Dollar Car Rental before in my current or previous lives!! However, I did have a reservation made for July 6th 2016, but this was never fulfilled. I was told repeatedly prior to the 6th, that reservation would automatically be canceled if not fulfilled. I did not provide a card to be placed on file. The bill charges I received in my email states my full name but incorrect address. It also used my previous reservation #. The bill claims that the vehicle was returned at 1:30am today, this morning. I have not been in the USA for 8 days now, so obviously this isn't me.
I really don't know who is at fault but 2 questions are for sure critical. 1) Why would a bill be emailed to someone business was never done with? 2) if this was clerical error, how did they manage to get my name correct, my previous reservation # correct and obviously my email correct? Maybe I'm overreacting, maybe I'm just tired. Being paranoid, I checked all my cards and they seem to be unmolested. I would really like to believe that this is all simple errors... Maybe I'm a victim of something else. I will do my best to follow up my review. Either way, Dollar Rental Car at the Fort Lauderdale Airport is a 24/7 operation & I'm pretty sure it's 24/7 elsewhere too, so I'm beyond confused why their customer care line is only M-F... That to me, in this day & age, is a red flag. I won't be able to sleep in peace, nor will I enjoy my weekend because this nonsense won't be resolved before 48 hrs have passed...

A recent trip to Tampa to care for aging parents led to such a abhorrent experience with this company. I was renting from June 22 to July 12. First they only had a Nissan Versa available and this was not a intermediate size car that I had a reservation for. I could not believe the disparity of companies regarding the classification of vehicles. Although the Customer Service Rep at the counter was nice, she said she really didn't have other cars available but could upgrade me and locate a car elsewhere. She did find a car and I didn't mind waiting but how is a Versa an intermediate car?
The next debacle was the one time usage of a toll road heading from Tampa to Brooksville. I advised the Rep that I had to get to Brooksville where my Dad was hospitalized. She said I would need to 'rent' the toll pass. The week before when I rented from Budget, there was no 'rental' fee for using a toll pass. You simply were charged for what tolls you used. I was astounded when told it would cost $157.47 for the entire rental periods PLUS the cost of tolls for them to activate the toll pass. That is highway robbery to charge EACH customer $10.49 per day to 'activate' a toll pass on the car. I needed to get to Brooksville in a hurry and was advised the toll road was very quick.
What they neglected to tell me is that THERE WERE CASH LANES TO PAY if you did not have a Sun Pass. How was I supposed to know this? What a rip off to use the expressway ONCE on June 22 and I paid $157.47 plus the tolls. Does this sound right? The third time is a charm. Now the tire pressure light goes on while driving on the million dollar toll road to get to the hospital.
The next day I call the road assistance and told them the pressure light was on and there were no valve covers on all four tires. Granted, my mistake as I did not fully inspect the car. The Rep advised I go buy some valve covers (stems or whatever you call them) and put air in the tire. I asked if there was a Dollar office closer to me but there wasn't. I purchased the covers and put air in the tire and over the next 2 days the one tire continued to lose pressure. I was advised no cars were available locally and I would have to drive back to Tampa for another car. How can I do this safely with a tire issue? I am also caring for an 83 year old ill father and cannot risk a breakdown in the vehicle. Not to mention I am a Diabetic and it's 98 degrees out and do not want to break down.
I was continuously told to call back to see if Hertz, a parent company could provide another vehicle to me. NO ONE could bring me a car because I was NOT broken down. Then I am told to visit a local Firestone since they have a corporate account with Dollar. Firestone called Customer Service/Roadside Assistance and advised there were nail punctures and the tire was not repairable. They did not have the exact tire but had a comparable tire. Dollar agreed but said I HAD TO PAY FOR THE TIRE. Since I did not get insurance through Dollar, I had to pay for a new tire. The Hyundai they rented me was new.
Wouldn't they have road hazard on the tires? Who said the nail was not in the tire at the airport? Why was this my fault when I was asking for another car for days. This car was not safe. So which issue do we deal with first? The disparity of car sizes and prices? The fraud on the Sun Pass or whatever the toll pass is called? Or the fact I paid $161 for a new tire and a bill of $660.80 for a piece of crap rental? As a Government employee I will certainly share my story and make sure no one rents from this company. The Customer Service e-mail box is a joke.

We were never able to reconcile the charges and just gave up.
Then a week later I got a notice from Dollar Rental stating that I had unpaid toll tickets from Pennsylvania and New Jersey when I never even left the city that I rented the car in. My granddaughter was in the hospital and I was at her bedside. When I tried to resolve the issue I was transferred multiple times with no resolution. I just read Sally of Arvada's review, mine is the same with one difference. I was never told about tolls and options when I picked up my car on 5/31/2016 at the San Antonio Airport. Sitting in front of me now is a bill for $2.20 in tolls plus 4 Administrative Charges of $15.00 each. Very nicely the letter does state that you will only be charged a maximum of 7 Administrative Fees! I have no doubt that this is spelled out in the fine print of the Rental Agreement, but anyway I look at this, it is really bad service and a very good way to not get repeat customers.
Yesterday I attempted to call Customer Service and was told by the agent that they were closed but would open at 8 AM today. I call today and am told that they are not open on weekends, only M-F. I asked both agents about the Toll issue, and both said that I should have been informed. It will be interesting to see what I hear from Customer Service on Monday. Most annoying is that I had no idea I would hit any toll roads, nor was it apparent that I could not pay at a toll booth. Regardless, $60.00 in "Administrative Fees" is ludicrous for a process that should be automated.

When I picked up the car at the airport, the grand total came to $685.78. I was told that the estimate I received was just that - an estimate. The Dollar employee said they would not know all the local taxes and airport fees until you actually pick up the car. My response back was that his company should do a better job of monitoring and adjusting the internet estimates accordingly. If they knew enough what taxes to apply at the time I paid for the car, they should know what they are when they are making a quote. I rent cars from this location a few times a year, and most times I use Enterprise and this situation has NEVER happened with them.
To top everything, they actually charged my credit card for $789.00. I will hold my breath in anticipation that they will actually reduce that amount to the overinflated $685.79 once I drop off the car. Once you are there to pick up your car, Dollar knows there is no choice but to pay the inflated charge ($187.82 in my case). I've learned my lesson! I used CarTrawler to make the reservation and they have great reviews. (By the way... Dollar, Hertz & Thrifty are all the same company.) My husband & I had to make a trip to Wisconsin from Oregon to visit his dying brother and his very sick mother. It was a necessary trip that we could not easily afford in the first place. I searched the internet and found a special promotional deal through DOLLAR Rent A Car and I thought the $183 was a great deal for 10 days for a Toyota Corolla or similar.
When we get to the pickup counter at the airport they acted like they couldn't find the car that was reserved for us. The lady says, "I'm just going to upgrade you to a Camry. That's okay with you, right?" She kind of winks like, "Wow! What a deal!" I had already read the 5 pages of rental agreement in the days before leaving home so when she hands me the paperwork it's just kind of rushed and she says, "You need to sign showing that you accept the terms of the rental and that this is the vehicle you're receiving... This shows you're refusing the insurance because you have your own. This is a Vehicle Condition Report and we advise that you do a quick inspection and make any notations here before you leave. And you're good to go."
Great, sounds reasonable. Well, I didn't take the time to read all the terms all over again. But I assumed it was a FREE upgrade since we didn't ask for it, she didn't offer it, she just said she was going to upgrade it for us and brought the keys over. After the trip was over I'm looking at my credit card statement and see an additional $300 charged. When I called to ask what the charge was for, the customer service lady said it was for the upgrade. I said, "I did not ask for an upgrade." She said well you signed the contract agreeing to the terms including extra charges that apply to an upgrade." REALLY!!! Do you really think I cared if I got a Camry or a Corolla? I honestly don't know the difference.
They're all a big scam and you need to beware of their appearance of being helpful and courteous. They take advantage of travelers' desperation, exhaustion, their mental and emotional distraction. I'm surprised the government allows them to work right out of the airport. I would have thought they are in the business of serving people and that they would be reputable. GUESS AGAIN!

I wished I had found this site and read the reviews first. I rented the car initially through Hotwire. I chose Dollar because they said that they took debit or credit cards. There was nothing about holding additional funds if you use a debit card. I am not into credit cards. Hotwire charged for the rental which was what I expected to pay. When we arrived in Dallas, the gal of course tried to sell us everything possible. We chose the cheapest insurance, $7.99 a day because I wasn't sure what my company covered. It was a ridiculous charge if you wanted to add an additional driver which of course costs them nothing, so we didn't do that. They were very vague about the tolls, and since I had lived in Texas at one time, I was fairly certain we could just pay the tolls as we went. The device they wanted to lease us was like $12.50 a day, and I knew the tolls would not cost that much.
If we didn't do that, another option was they would charge us $15 and bill us the tolls charged. It was all very confusing. She told me that my total bill would be a certain amount, and with the additional insurance, that came out about what it should be. I asked if the amount I had paid Hotwire would be deducted from that amount and she said yes. (The receipt that she gave me had the total amount, with a charge for some initials at so much per day which came out to be about the cost of the Hotwire amount.) They also deducted from my debit card several hundred dollars as a "deposit" because I was using a debit card. They also checked my credit rating, again, none of which was in the ad on Hotwire.
When we returned the car, we just happened to go in and ask about the tolls because it was very confusing and there were no places to pay the tolls. At that time, she said they would bill us and it would be $15 plus the amounts of the tolls, which would still have been cheaper than the device. The way she said was a little weird, talking about every time they took a picture of the plates. So, I asked, she didn't offer, if the $15 was a one time charge or every single time. She said it was $15 plus the toll EVERY time they took a picture of the plates. So you could be paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars in fees for what, isn't have been nothing more than $25 worth of tolls. I flipped. She said that I could go ahead and buy the device, which as much as we were on tolls, was now ridiculous amount but far cheaper than the charges for the tolls.
TEXAS NEEDS TO FIGURE THIS OUT. Dollar is profiteering off of them and penalizing visitors to their state. Texas is not getting any of that $15 a snap. When we got home, I was charged the entire several hundreds of dollars, and the cost of the rental through Hotwire had not been deducted. When I called Dollar, that big amount per day was not for the car after all, it was for their most expensive insurance, which we did not take. So they charged me for the most expensive insurance, which took care of all kinds of things including what the $7.99 a day we did take, AND they charged me for the cheapest insurance as well, which again would have been covered in the expensive one.
The whole experience was shady, unclear, things should have been in the ad that was not. Customer service was rude and unwilling to help at all. So what I ordered from Hotwire for $167, wound up being almost $500, plus the additional almost $300 they took out as a debit card deposit. They did return that after I turned in the car, but still the difference in expectation and reality was ridiculous. So if you are headed anywhere where there are tolls, BEWARE. I did report them to the Texas Attorney General, but I would stay far away from Dollar. This, the toll thing sounds like a great class action suit where the only winners are the attorneys.

When I declined them all she said: "You will be driving an uninsured vehicle". I replied that I had my own car insurance so she asked with which company. When I told her, she replied that Dollar had no agreement with that insurance company. I insisted in declining additional cover and she said: "Fine. If you damage the car we will take all the money directly from your credit card."
She tried to sell me a one week pass for the toll highway. She asked where I was going and when I said Ocala she immediately said that I would need it and that she had just driven there and there were toll station that did not accept credit card or cash. I refused to buy it for $ 10/day and she said that instead of $ 80 for 8 days she would give it to me for $52.00. I still refused. I then asked someone else if for Ocala there were toll station and was told that there were none, which ended up being the truth.
Pointless to say that none of the information she gave me was correct. It was a clear attempt to persuade a customer to buy unnecessary services. Indicative of an unchecked dishonesty that will damage the image of the company. I will report it to the Dollar head quarters and to Better Business Bureau. Not sure there will be any consequence but at least I'll do my part. And no more Dollar car rental.

My reservation was for a compact car at the Oakland, California airport for a 11:30 AM time. When I arrived at the Dollar counter at 11:30 AM, the woman there told me there were no compact cars available at that time and that I would have to wait 45 minutes for one to become available. There was, however, a mid-sized car available immediately. I could not wait 45 minutes and so I took the mid-sized car at a higher price. I think a 45 minute wait is unacceptable and called Dollar to ask for a refund for the difference. They refused. This is the second time in a year that Dollar has not had a car ready for me.

Recently when I rented a car from Dollar Rent a Car, I told the attendant that I wanted to use my debit card rather than a credit card. He said this was fine, but he would need to see ID. I asked at that point what I needed to do if I needed the car for longer than a week. He said I just call the number and let them now. They will take the payment over the phone, and there will be no more deposit fees. I was misrepresented. I provided the ID and rented the car. When I returned the car, I found out I was being debited out of my account another $529 because I used the Visa debit. I WAS NOT TOLD THIS WHEN SIGNING THE CONTRACT. I am a single mom and I live on a tight budget. If I would have known this was the policy, I would have gone elsewhere.
I will NEVER use Dollar services again. I DO NOT THINK IT IS PROFESSIONAL TO NOT DISCLOSE WHAT THE CUSTOMER SHOULD KNOW IN MAKING THE DECISION TO USE YOUR COMPANY. I ONLY found out about this Visa thing and going beyond the original week would be over $500. I paid over $200 when I renewed the first over the phone. That was in addition to what I paid when I rented the car. Your business practices are unfair; say one thing at the beginning, then surprise you at the return. I AM NOT AMUSED. I assumed when I paid the $200 payment for renewal of the contract, then that would bring my account up to date at that point. WRONG... SURPRISE!!!

I am a Regional Director for a very well known Life Insurance Company and had some business to take care of in GA. Being that my company allows us a per diem account when renting cars, it is in our best interest to use our per diem rather than a personal credit card. I reserved my car for 6/16/2016 with a pickup time of 2pm. When getting to the counter I was told by the customer service rep (in a very rude, condescending tone) "I hope you know we do a credit check & it's not a soft pull & it will affect your credit score, so if you ain't got good credit, you won't be getting one of our cars!" My reaction was simply "Okay?" At this point the woman tries to upsell me their expensive but not needed insurance. I decline the coverage & she proceeds to overcharge me anyways which declined the transaction because my company didn't authorize that amount.
I then was told that I couldn't rent the car and would need to come back in 24 hrs because they can't run my card again in a 24hr period. 27 hours later 6/17/2016 I return, only to be confronted by a man named Franklin who completely berated & screamed at me at a very loud tone in order for the 50+ people behind me in line could hear all because I asked if he was running my card as a credit or a debit as I wanted it to be credit & not debit. It turns out that my card was declined a second time for security measures due to my banking institution protecting me against fraud however, I have never in my life been so publicly humiliated & felt so degraded before I encountered Franklin at Jax International Dollar Rental Car!
I walked out in tears, without a car & missed another day of work because of my bank protecting me, the card holder but I most certainly did not deserve to be spoken to in that way! When I contacted the corporate customer service, they truly could've cared less about the manner in which their customer service reps handled their business practices & considering Franklin told me he has worked there for over 20yrs, I don't think they care! I would be fired immediately if I ever spoke to anyone in that tone much less manner!!! I wonder if this is why their cars are so cheap?

The check in was very confusing. I was asked which car I wanted and then was told it was $10 more, not $10 a day more. He kept asking me if I wanted this and wanted that, etc. The check in person told me to not fill up the car when I returned it because their gas was cheaper and all I said was ok, trying to get done with the check in. Found out later I was charged for the gas already, which when he reviewed my bill with he didn't bother to tell me. My bill was a lot more than I was told and called to figure out why and was told I agreed to everything. When we turned in the car the employee came and told us he was going to take $45 off our bill and he could do that because he was the manager. He just wanted us to complete the survey. He wrote his first name on the bill again saying he was going to take $45 off the bill. When I did the survey, I got a 10% off my next car rental. I emailed customer service but have never received a response for any of it.
This isn't the first time I rented a car. I've always used Alamo before but had gone through the website Auto Slash, which I wont use again either. I know I should have been a better consumer and paid more attention to what I was getting charged, but I've never had to pay more than what I was quoted renting other cars. We are at the mercy of the employees and we expect them to be at least a little bit truthful. I used Dollar Rent A Car in San Francisco - which was another charge because I was told there are toll bridges everywhere and we had to pay upfront or there would be a huge charge at the end. I never did see us cross a toll bridge anywhere but sure am glad I paid up front. Dollar - you lost a couple of customers for good.

I received a ticket for illegal parking which was an emergency for $65.-. I returned the car at 3pm and the office where I rented it from was closed which I was not told. So I had to find another location to return it. It was totally inconvenient and that's why I ended up getting a ticket. I paid the 65.- to the Motor Vehicle Dept. in 30 days which is required. A few weeks later I get a bill from Dollar Rent A Car of $65.- and $42.- for administrative fees. I could not believe my eyes. I emailed them immediately and explained that I had paid. Answer, MVD did not get the payment on time and I have to pay the fee because Dollar had paid the $65.-. I had to retrieve my 65.- back from the MVD. After emailing them again I found out that they had not paid the MVD. All of a sudden I only owed them the administrative fee of $42. What a rip off! I guess I have to pay and will never use their service again.

Rented a vehicle in Orlando to go to Disney/Universal. On 3/27/16 Sunday drove to/our Villa, Monday morning 3/28/16 the vehicle wouldn't start. Called Dollar and we were told that someone would call me back. We had to be at Disney by 9:00 am, for the type of package we purchased. No one called from Dollar. Tuesday 3/29/16 I called Dollar. Again and again I was redirected to someone else. Not wanting to take a chance and break down on the highway or roadway so we left the car in the driveway. Dollar Rent A Car never reached out to me at any time during the entire rental period.
On Friday 4/1/16 when we were suppose to catch our return flight the car wouldn't start again. Finally it started and when we arrived at the airport check-in area I informed the Dollar employee that there's a problem with the car she said "You have to take it up with the main office," then when she went to start the car it wouldn't start. Dollar still charged me $370 and the only thing they would do for me is give me a $25 coupon towards my next rental. That's a joke!

Picked up precooked rental care. The usual hard sell, especially the Sunglass - exorbitant charge. The map supplied had all the non-toll routes away from the airport we were. Complete my obscured. Managed to get to the I95 without getting on the. toll roads. After about 70 miles going North to Orlando went over a bridge with usual expansion gaps. Next thing couldn't steer properly and grinding noise from front. Came off the I95 to find the splash panel and wheel arch guard had come free and we're caught underneath the car. We could easily have been badly injured or even killed. Managed to pull it all out and towed it in the trunk to be able to drive on. We had the expense of staying at a hotel as could not get any response from the Dollar emergency service number. The next day eventually managed to get through to Dollar. We were given the choice of driving the damaged car back to Miami or to Orlando to exchange.
We went to Orlando airport, incurring toll charges. No apology for supplying a dangerous vehicle. Incurred further toll charges leaving the airport. Put in four formal complaints on the Dollar website; all completely ignored. Then, to add insult to injury, on the return to the UK, received a demand for toll fees of $11.65 plus $104.00 administrative fees. No reference to the fact the toll charges were incurred in exchanging the dangerous vehicle and still no acknowledgement of the supply of the dangerous vehicle. I explained how toll charges came about. Not interested - just threatened with legal process for recovery.
Then found out Dollar had taken the fees plus admin charge from my credit card. But still got demands for payment. I complained to the booking agent, Autoscope, who made a formal complaint to Dollar but all we got was an apology and the refund of the charges - but Dollar's charges collection agency is still sending threatening demands for payment of the charges. Worst car rental experience ever.

Warning: What you read about Dollar Rental could be true. The JAX Airport one gives a bad name to other franchises that are doing their best in customer service. Unfortunately, for us trust is a biggie and they broke it. Sometimes you read a review and think that some people just had a bad day. Nope. What you read is very possibly true. We reserved on-line over 6 months ago and got a great price. Walked to the counter to get the car and right out of the gate they tell me that because I reserved it I have to drive the car. The object of our reservation was for my husband to drive but no they tell me it is in the contract that whomever reserves the car on-line has to be the driver no changes (so why the edit on-line then). I have the contract in hand and it says nothing of the sort. The counter staff does not care. So an extra charge for that because I can't drive in big cities.
Then the person at the counter tells us that Orlando is charging around $4.18 a gal so we fall for the "have them fill it up clause". Guess what, gas at the highest in Orlando was $2.39 a gal. Our son-in-law went through them too. Told no smoking but his rental car is filled with burn holes and smells of smoke plus they gave him a key with an old battery so 2 days later his car won't start. We would have changed everything if we could have but the bewitching hour of closing comes at midnight at JAX Airport and we got there just before.
So when you read this make sure you understand that in our opinion Dollar has become liars, con artists, and extortionists. They have no ethics when it comes to customer service and the reservations on-line mean absolutely nothing as we have found they will come up with something to add to your reserved amount so it is double or more to rent a car with them. BEWARE! Not that it will do any good but we are writing to Florida's Attorney General because this is not right in business practices.

I booked my rental online for a low rate. My reservation was for 3 days. I ended up keeping the car an additional day. I called in to make the arrangements which was fine but when I dropped my car off the following day, my charges seemed a bit off. I informed the person helping me. He asked for my rental agreement but I didn't have it on me (I mistakenly left it where I was staying). Once I was able to obtain it, I compared the rates and realized that I was charged DOUBLE the rate of my reservation!
I called in to straighten it out and the representative was very helpful. He didn't give me any problems. But I am very upset that this even happened. They charged me $200 dollars over what they should have, then told me that I would receive the money in 7-10 business days!!! That is too long to wait for money you should never have taken in the first place and it disrupts vacation plans! Why couldn't the drop off rep read the same information that the representatives on the phone could? Why didn't their systems match up? It makes me wonder how many people they have done this way. For this reason and several others, I will not use Dollar again!

I traveled to San Francisco last month. I had a confirmation with me for a rental car. When I arrived at the booth for Dollar Rent A Car I presented my confirmation with a quoted price of $121.00 for a two day rental. She started the process and when completed told me the car was ready. She asked for credit card. I asked for the total as I gave her my card. "That will be $689.00" she informed me. I asked her to look at confirmation and she basically laughed and said they could not honor the price because it was too low. Obviously I was not pleased. I asked for the manager and be confirmed they are not obligated to honor confirmations. After about ten minutes of trying to reason with him about this five fold increase it was obvious they were not going to help me out in any way.
I finally gave up and moved to National Car Rental. They could have taken advantage of me being a weekend with no reservation, but they treated me fairly with a similar car I had reserved with Dollar and with taxes in came to $226.00. I have since contacted the head office of Dollar and the best they could do was to say they were sorry but could do nothing about it. I will never trust Dollar rental again. She then told us about inadequate insurance offered by Economy. Agent just kept adding fees. I fully understand upselling, however, if your company is not going to honor these second booking companies why do business with them? We were told by Economy two drivers would be acceptable for a 15 day rental!!! Dollar wanted to charge an additional $13.00 a day fee to add second driver 35 years old with CDL. There are reasons Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis are in the top ratings for rental cars. By the time we got the car from Dollar we could have flown cheaper. Economy had already charged credit card for original booking and I would have lost the money if we had pursued a different avenue with a reputable rental agency.

Rented a car in LA In May 2016. The Expedia estimate on my reservation was 228.15$, for the cheapest car. At the Dollar counter, I refused all attempts by counter lady to upgrade or pay more for any options, other than the Fuel option (44.14) so total became 289.27 with taxes. When we went to get our car in the Dollar lot, the "lot lady" gestured to our car, a small Chevy. As we were loading the car, the smiling, friendly lady said, "Hey, you have 2 options of cars - there is a Nissan Sentra you could take, it has a little more room." NO MENTION THAT THIS WAS AN UPGRADE.
When I opened my credit card statement today, there was a 3070.76$ charge - for an upgrade!!! Seriously, 2781$ increase to drive a nissan sentra, same duration of time - I never ever would've paid for an upgrade 2700$. The lot lady never ever said UPGRADE, we thought she was being nice (our 2 bags of luggage fit just fine in our original rental car!)
It gets better, too. When I called Dollar to contest the charge, the bait and switch by the lot lady, the best they would do is reducing it to 1954.76$ and that is with a rude "corporate" customer service lady, who said they did not have managers (when asked to speak to one). Oh, and the Credit Card Auth amount, on Dollar's rental paperwork said 330$ - yet I was charged 3070.76$ on mine. Horrible customer service. I am contesting charge with my credit card, wish me well.

Upon returning our car to the lot, we were greeted by an employee that told us we were in the wrong area to park. But that is only the beginning. I rented a car with Dollar car rental from the Cleveland Hopkins airport. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at this location all because of this specific rental company. I went on 5/26, 16 to get my car and the guy behind the front desk was rude. And he needs to stop telling his customers that an economy car is a smart car, because that is not true. I wouldn't call a Mazda 2 4 door hatchback a smart car by any means. When I went to where the cars were stored no one was there to help me. When I finally found someone I was told to go to the wrong section and ended up selecting the wrong car which I had to return. Thankfully, 2 men from the adjoining rental company were kind enough to offer me assistance after walking around 15 minutes and not seeing a single person from Dollar. It's pitiful that someone from another rental company had to assist me because Dollar wouldn't.
There were only 2 economy cars available and the one was FILTHY. It smelled of cigarettes and had cigarette ash in the front passenger seat. I feel horrible for the person that was stuck with that car. I would have demanded an upgrade with how dirty the car was. The car I got was basic, a Mazda 2 4 door hatchback. Not a smart car like I was told while checking in, ha. I was fine with it, no real complaints. It was very clean and it got me to my destination. It had lots of scratches, but I wasn't bothered by that. When returning the car, I was at least helped by a Dollar employee who wasn't very friendly. But at least it was a Dollar employee. I will NEVER rent a car from this company again. Their customer service is beyond horrible. I would rather pay the extra money and rent from a neighboring rental company like I've done in the past and receive good service. Dollar rental will never get my business again.

I recently rented a car from Dollar for a trip from Fort Lauderdale to the Keys. The CSR asked me if I wanted a toll tag for the week for an additional charge of $50. I mentioned that I had rented other cars in Florida and this has never been an issue, but he insisted that I would be fined by the state if I did not get the toll tag.
At this point I just decided to use Google maps to drive around the tolls. My daughter, Valerie **, rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at Milwaukee, Mitchell Field for our group of 4 on 5/12/16. I was a passenger, passenger's dissatisfaction is often overlooked. Within 15 minutes of leaving the airport, the car, a 2016 Ford Fusion, just died in the middle of traffic. Two of us passengers were able to push the car around the corner to a safer spot but then it wouldn't brake, either. When we finally got it parked, she called Dollar. They had the audacity to suggest when they send a wrecker out, we should all ride along and wait while it was being repaired. Of course, we had better things to do so asked that an alternate car be sent out for us, and Dollar could deal with the Fusion.
We were only 15 minutes away from the rental company, shouldn't have been a big deal. The rep said she'd call us back in 15 minutes with a decision on that. After about 20 minutes, my daughter called again, went thru the whole scenario again, and was told they couldn't just give us another car off the lot, but a wrecker would be out in about 90 minutes with a car. We sat and waited on a corner in an unfamiliar town with no food, drink, or bathroom facilities in the cold for nearly 2 hours before a wrecker showed up... without a car. The driver said he didn't know he was supposed to bring one but could go back and get one - another 45 minutes.
He came back finally with a car and we were off. All told we spent 4 hours in the cold and missed a long anticipated family function. While dealing with this company, we were told by the rep and her manager that they didn't know if they could compensate us in any way but would "put a note on our paperwork" and it would be dealt with when we returned the car. When we returned the car, apparently there was no "note" and the Dollar rep had to call the manager of the garage to verify the problem. Of course, that manager was not available.
Dear dollar rental: when a customer has a problem with your car, it is your problem. Good customer service would dictate that you see the customer in taken care of promptly and sent off happily in a functioning car immediately. You cannot ask them to ride in a wrecker, wait for your car to be fixed, trust that that same car will actually be fixed, wait in the cold for 4 hours while you dink around with your "protocol," then not compensate them in any way. I DID send Dollar an email in their contact us links, but of course, that was never answered either.

If the Confirmed Reservation is for a certain amount why should the consumer believe otherwise? Then it is obviously the mistake of the company when they get busted over doubling it... Apparently the Savannah airport desk is privately owned and operated so no help coming from the national office. Hoped that Hotwire would intercede on our behalf and stand by their reserved price but they won't. Will NEVER use either company again.

I booked my rental using a search site such as Priceline. Usually, Enterprise and Hertz are my picks and they've always worked extremely well with no hassles. This time, during my trip to Omaha, Dollar was the preferred option by said search site, so I booked the reservation. My total -- displayed by both the search site and the Dollar site itself -- was only supposed to be $188.88 with estimated fees. Because I confirmed this twice on the internet, I did not bother to confirm this at the desk and no explanation of fees were given. I just picked up my keys and continued my trip. The next day, I checked my account only to realize that I had been charged 340.00 dollars and the agreement that had been stuffed into a pouch was riddled with outrageous fees. Worst yet, the vehicle was not even in good condition. This will not stand. Avoid. At. All. Costs.

I feel very ripped off. Rented a car to drive from Ft Lauderdale to key west. By the time they were done it cost me three times what I had paid for with a package from spirit air. They told me I had to purchase insurance which I did not need. Told me it was a very confusing drive and I should have gps which when I started driving did not work and they wouldn't take it off the bill. Said there was no manager to talk to. It ended up costing more money than it would have been to fly into key west on a connecting flight. I have rented a car from enterprise before and never had a problem... There is a circular phone loop for which there is no escape - unless you want to buy something. Even with my most frustrating company disputes/complaints (Dell/AT&T) I can at least get through to a person. They may be in India, but there is at least someone to answer the phone. I've rented cars for a round trip from Tallahassee to Kissimmee and back (Florida) several times in the last year or so to visit my mom in a nursing home. Previously, I've used Avis and Hertz and I would drive through tolls in the "SunPass lane" and when the tolls came in, charge it to my credit card and send me receipts in the mail (excellent service). Last weekend my truck's check engine light came on so I rented a car from Dollar and just received a bill for $8.90 in toll and a $60.00 Administrative Fee! I will pay it because I should have paid more attention to my rental agreement, but I will never knowingly rent from Dollar/Thrifty or any partner of theirs ever again and do anything I can to dissuade others. Florida is phasing out toll booths and must be a "gold mine" for Dollar/Thrifty. As I said - never again! PS: the car did not have cruise control, either.

Today, I got a call from Susan ** at the claims center saying I owed for the damage no matter what. That's not fair, right, nor does it make any real business sense for you. When I called Dollar the representative informed me that if I had said something when I dropped the car off, they could have removed it, but now it is too late. She would not allow me to speak to a supervisor. I have never agreed to insurance when I rent a car and would not have this time either. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the original agreement and the one they sent me does show the amount. My credit card was not charged until I dropped the car off. Rest assured I will be reviewing those contracts a lot more closely and we will not be renting from them in the future.

I made a trip down to Southern Arizona in early April 2016. I flew into Phoenix where I had rented a car online. During the conversation with the clerk I told him I only wanted the deal that was offered to me on the website. He said "ok but there would be a damage deposit." I said ok and was on my way. Downstairs I met a clerk who said "pick any of these cars" and left me standing there. I picked a car and drove over to the exit. The lady there took my paperwork and said goodbye. Nobody inspected the car or said anything to me except the lady at the exit who told me the GPS installed in the car was included. The car was delightful. Had a good trip and returned it on time and in good condition. A man took my paperwork, grunted and handed me a piece of paper and said my bill would be sent to me by email.
I ran off to catch my plane after stuffing the paperwork in my bag. I arrived home and discovered they had charged me an extra $250.00 US. I attempted several times to phone them to discuss the matter but never got to speak to anyone. I sent an email in and 4 days later I got an email from an employee saying the bill was correct and they were satisfied. I wrote back in an attempt to discuss the matter but all I ever got was a survey from them asking how I liked their service. You can guess my answer. I discussed the situation with my credit card company (Amazon). They immediately tried to reach out to Dollar with no success. They have since credited me back $342.00 CA.

We recently hired a car from Dollar in Texas, Dallas Fort Worth airport. On arriving at the desk I was asked do I need a Sat Nav and I said no (Dollar wanted to charge me 13.95 dollars for the privilege per day) which with the hire duration was the price of a new one here in the UK so thankfully I took one with me from the UK. They then asked me if I wanted additional insurance which I had already declined online (additional towing and windshield insurance at 5.90 dollars per day) and as the insurance provided was more than adequate I again declined. They then asked me at the desk on returning the vehicle to pay for a full tank of fuel which again I declined because this was going to be some 33.37 dollars, then they told me they had the cheapest fuel around so I purchased it. This was a lot more than what it actually costs to fill up yourself I should have known.
They then told me that I had to take out toll charges costing 75.48 dollars and it was mandatory, no options which I had to buy even though I wasn't staying in Texas, I was traveling to Oklahoma City. I purchased the toll charge fee because I had no option or that's what they told me. After arriving in my hotel in OK City I decided to google the toll charge and to my surprise it was an option. I feel totally ripped off, coned and I immediately sent Dollar customer complaints an email with no answers or explanations from them to date. 75.48 dollars for toll charges. Clearly Dollar is using this to scam its customers of money. It's very clear that Dollar uses false information and lies to gain extra money off its customers and don't reply to their complaints. Dollar might have gained a little money off me in the short term but I definitely won't be using them again and they won't gain any more money off me in the long term.
They prey on people not knowing and being straight off a long haul flight so I hope anyone reading this will stay clear or at least be clued up before arriving. Total extra charges after tax was 119.35 dollars on top of the hire price of the car which was 178 dollars for 8 days hire. Dollar should print all charges upfront and make it clear to customers what they are getting charged for. Clearly the front desk employees must be on commission or something as part of their job to push you to buy something. I also paid for a mid range vehicle advertised as a Dodge Avenger or similar. What I got was a compact Chevy Cruze. Again let down and they had the cheek to ask me to pay for an upgrade so never again.

When I arrived my reservation return date was changed from 4/26 to 5/2??? The man helping me was great but I stood in line for another 30 minutes while he tried to return the drop off date to the 26th and keep my rate the same as the original reservation.
After my 4 kids and I waited another 30 minutes (now 65 minutes for a car) he reported that he had it correct and the rate was very similar to my original reservation. Great... I signed and left. I should have calculated the daily rate in my head, checked all dates but I didn't, I looked at the total and signed. Upon return the total had jumped up $140. The woman at the counter told me I should have returned the car on 4/22 not the 26th! More errors made. To boot, the car stunk to high heaven of cig smoke... Terrible in the heat with my 4 kids!

I booked a rental car as a package through Spirit Airlines (broke college student ftw) and was told in the email that all taxes were paid. Got to the counter at my destination and was told it would be an additional $120 for (more?) taxes. Got out my card to pay & the woman working the counter says "Oooh, so if you're using a MasterCard, it'll be $350." Whaaat??? Uh, can't really handle that - otherwise I'd be going with a more reputable company - Enterprise, etc.
Ok, so now stranded at the airport with no way to pay for this jacked up deposit (which I get is more the credit card companies' fault than Dollar's, but if I'd known about this in advance I could have made arrangements with a prepaid card - but nope! Surprise!). My friend fortunately offers to put the charge on her visa from the next town over. So I stand in the hour long line... again. And nope! Card has to be present. Doesn't matter if the card owner is on the phone & willing to authorize. Ugh.
Back in the end of the line. Same friend from before is fortunately able to drive to a branch of the bank, put money in my account, and now I can use a visa from an older bank account (I was visiting for Xmas). The time constraint was amazing on this as I was traveling on a Saturday. The bank was closing & so the friend had to rush & barely made it. Meanwhile, the agents look overworked, frustrated, and desensitized from constantly screwing up people's travels all day everyday.
So it seriously took me like 3 hours from arriving to the desk to get my car. And the thing is, I'm not even mad about the charge - I was renting the car for a week so that actually was reasonable. It's the fact that I didn't know about it until I was in this position where I would either be stranded or have to pay using a form of payment that wasn't available to me. It seems like a grossly predatory practice considering their charges are 'so reasonable' when you pay months in advance - of course it's going to be a service that attracts people on a budget. I guess if they were upfront about it they'd have zero customers though - always sure sign of a crook.

We even talked about the fuel options and I indicated my choice would be the "I fill it up" option. But got charged the $40 pre-pay anyway. When I filled the tank mid-rental it only cost $25 to fill up. So, Math... We never discussed insurance, and I never saw anything about insurance on the little display pad. When I called Customer Service after the fact, their response was [paraphrased] "It's not our fault you did not read your contract." You know, the one we stuff in an envelope. We rented two cars via their Vancouver, BA facility and on our advance booking we did not select additional insurance and it was also not part of the total costs on our vouchers - which were paid in advance except taxes and airport taxes. Upon pick-up we were once again asked about extra insurance and once again we declined. Rental sheets are signed and all good, except when we come home after the holiday and suddenly see that significant amounts are drawn by Dollar Rent A Car on our credit cards.
When complaining about the billing, we are told that we have accepted the additional insurance already upon booking and should appear from our total costs (which it didn't) and after that is cleared then the explanation is changed to us having accepted the additional insurance at the rental facility, and they refer to a bill they have apparently had tucked away behind the car data sheets but yet have to give us a copy of after they drew the money on our credit cards! The copy we hold certainly does not have any circle around the optional insurance and we did not suspect this to be the final invoice anyway since we had just picked up the car! So make sure to really double-check ALL documents they give you on pick-up. For us it seems like a scam to force the additional insurance on to unsuspecting renters. We will definitely not use this company again and certainly do not recommend others to do so either.

These guys are unreal! I booked a car rental through Kayak that went through a pass through rental company called Euro Cars out of Portland Maine. I paid $111.65 CDN for a two day rental with the option for a GPS at $13.95 US per day. When I arrived they said they had to upgrade my car to get a GPS. That was $20 US which was fine. Then came all the other "charges". First there was the toll pass. I said I was going to Tarrytown New York and was told I need a pass. That was $42 for a toll pass costing $16. I did not need the pass but being out of town, I was an easy mark. Then there was the Concession Fee Recovery [whatever that was - never explained] that was $32.35. When all the other stuff was piled on the total rental was $244 US!
Now comes the clincher. The $111.65 CDN I paid to reserve was not recognized in the contract [I assumed it was] and when I got my credit card bill, I was charged that as well. In short, I was double charged. Euro Car wanted no responsibility as that was a pass through charge and Dollar gave me phone number after phone number to follow up. First the rental agency did not have my contract record. They said it was with Corporate. I phoned Corporate but they said I had to phone "Customer Care" [LOL]!! But, they were not open. I tried the website but it was under construction and gave me, yet another, a phone number.
I have spent hours trying to sort this out but just get the runaround. On top of this the customer service is deplorable. The service person that gave me the car acted like she was in a hypnotic state. When I tried to return the car, the address on the contract was wrong. Apparently, they moved but have not updated their information. I spent an hour in New York rush hour trying to get back to the agency [using unneeded mileage and missing out on gas rebate. Nice touch!]. I was lucky to catch my flight. Talking to others, they had problems returning their car to the right location. They said they would probably miss their flight.
The bottom line: a 36 hour car rental to go from La Guardia, New York to Tarrytown, New York [30 miles each way] cost $330US!!! I will tell every person I know, and those I don't know, to avoid these guys like the plague. I have rented cars from all sorts of agencies but nothing come even close to this experience. The only thing that is not included would be additional insurance like LDW. That would be an additional charge of $26.98 a day. However, they don't tell that if you do purchase additional insurance then your base rate goes up! Your taxable rate goes up for additional insurance and other things you add on like fuel charge. If you have them fill up for you as they promise it's cheaper to do so. That raises your tax! No one explained anything to me like that. There is so many hidden fees it's impossible to get anything close to the actual price. I repeat anything close! It cost $700 to rent a Nissan Versa for a week!!

I mistakenly rented a van for Easter break from Dollar. Everything went fine until the day I turned the van back in and they charged me for fees that I declined at the desk the day of check in. The woman who took the keys back said I'll have to call when I return home. Well that was no help... customer service is not a service. It's really mean people who just disconnect your call and don't answer emails.
Now today they are trying to charge me 48.00 for a 1.00 missed toll. This place makes me sick. Absolutely sick. Now I had to pay 28.00 a day for the van so that's 196.00, plus taxes, THEN they charged me 371.00 for insurance - I declined. Now 48.00 for a SunPass toll. I can't believe I was scammed. I'm usually on top of reviews and fine print. I feel like someone just literally robbed me... oh wait... they did. That's over 500.00 me and my children are out of now.

I was very clear with the agent when I verbally declined insurance, and he agreed. "PAI, PEC" was added to the contract anyway. I didn't notice until I reviewed the receipt and called Dollar Rental Car to ask what "PAI, PEC" was. That's when I learned it was insurance, which I had verbally declined. They refused to adjust the bill.

I used their website to rent a car two days ahead for a full-size sedan. I received a voucher saying this was confirmed. I go to the rental place 1/2 hr early. There were no other customers. The Dollar woman tells me I have to wait 1/2 hr and strolls off to chat to other Dollar staff. After 1/2 hr, she strolls back in. She looks at the voucher, takes my credit card and proof of insurance (after she tries to sell me insurance). Her attempts to sell me other extra stuff fails. She then says that there were no cars of the type I had rented and that if I wanted a car that day, I would have to upgrade to premium cars at my cost. Other car rental businesses just give you a car, since it's their error. Not Dollar. After I refused, she said she could not help me.
She also STATED THAT A VOUCHER IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF A CAR BUT A BOOKING THAT CAN BE DENIED. This is regardless of the email Dollar sent that stated: "We are happy to confirm your booking was successful." And that in their fine print, they state that a booking guarantees a car of the class booked. Then get this: she says in an extremely disinterested way that if I wanted to cancel, I would have to contact customer service myself. They are only a car distribution office. But the head office is closed on the weekends! So I left. I filed an internet complaint with Dollar and asked for a full refund.
Three days later, I get an email from cartrawler.com. Apparently, Dollar outsources online bookings with this company. Cartrawler.com asked me send proof of the booking and proof that money had been taken out of my credit card (they have no proof?) and after that, that I would hear from them in 20 days about the outcome. Have not heard from them. In the meantime, I have filed a complaint with my bank and they have taken the case up. Never again with Dollar. Do not use Dollar. They are not a reputable company. And if you still choose to use them, do not let them pressure you into purchasing the extras.

Reserved an SUV from Dollar rental at LAX. First of all the line at the counter to get the car was very very long, about 20 people in line at 11 pm. Then, the clerk told us they didn't have the car we rented and said they would give us an upgraded car for same money, we said fine. Then she said we had to purchase the refill gas through them because it was cheaper and if we didn't do this we would have to refill the car within 10 miles of the car rental office and at much higher price. We refused this offer, the clerk got mad and would not take no for an answer and continue to harass us about buying the gas through them. Then she tried to force us to buy their insurance even though our insurance covers the car and we refused. Again she became very argumentative and continued to push her insurance pitch and would not even listen to us saying we didn't need it and would not buy it.
She finally listened and gave us the total amount on the rental, which was double the amount we had negotiated online with Dollar rental. When we asked why it was double, she said because the computer didn't let her rent the upgraded car for the same money to which we said we didn't ask for anyway. Finally we told her we didn't want anything and we would go someplace else. Miraculously she said they had our original medium size SUV outside. It turns out not only did they have our SUV but they had a whole row of medium size SUVs. The clerks at Dollar rental are thieves! They cannot be trusted at all! We will never rent from Dollar rental!

I'm usually rent from Hertz, Alamo or Enterprise but I decided to give Dollar a try. I opted for a mid-size, as always, and when I got to the counter in Phoenix, they said that what I signed up for was a 'mystery car.' They said my mystery car was a compact car. I'm thinking, 'this is a joke, I don't want a compact car.' So, we had to upgrade and pay an extra 15.00/day to get the midsize car that I thought I was getting in the first place. They also told us that for both of us to drive the car, we would have to pay an additional 6.00/day.
I have never heard of having to pay for an extra driver. Most places just ask for the license of the second driver and then you're done. Apparently, according the to gentleman at the counter, I'm not the only person to complain about the 'bait and switch' tactics they use to lure you in to begin with. It cost us an additional 100.00 to upgrade to a midsize, which we thought we were getting in the first place.
I decided to call their Customer Service department today and they weren't much help either. In fact the gal that I spoke to was rude and just wanted to argue. I asked her to please transfer me to a manager and she told me she couldn't transfer me. So here's the scoop, folks. Do not rent from Dollar as they will find a way to charge you for something that you have no control over. It's the worst car rental agency I've ever experienced, and I've rented many cars over the years. I will stick with Alamo, Hertz or Enterprise for sure in the future.

I rented a car for two weeks from Thrifty Car Rental in Cape Town, South Africa. I paid the bill when I picked up the car, and returned it full of fuel. First I waited in line for over an hour, because Dollar/Thrifty had far too few staff to handle the number of customers who were arriving to pick up cars. When I finally reached the desk, I was given a car that had no license plates or registration, and then had to wait an extra half an hour to get a different (legal) vehicle.
After returning my rental car, my credit card was charged an additional fee of $8. I did not receive any invoice or explanation. After I complained, I heard nothing for two and a half months. Eventually, I was told that the surcharge was for fuel. This is nonsense, since I filled the car with fuel at the airport immediately prior to returning. I drove no more than a few hundred meters after filling the car. This type of unexplained and unjustified surcharge is fraudulent and abusive towards customers. Dollar/Thrifty is taking advantage of its customers by making small surcharges that most customers will either not notice or will not take the time to dispute.
I also had a bad experience with Dollar last fall, when I rented a vehicle in San Francisco, CA. I received a parking ticket, which I paid promptly. However, Dollar claimed that I had not paid the ticket, and so charged me a $30 administrative fee. What's more, for some reason, they charged the fee TWICE. When I complained, and provided proof that I had in fact paid the parking ticket on time, they refunded only one of the two $30 fees. I then had to complain again. It took another month for them to acknowledge their error and refund the second fee.
I'm sure that Dollar/Thrifty gets away with cheating a lot of customers because many customers don't jump through all their hoops in order to get the refunds that are rightfully due. Many people probably don't carefully inspect their credit card bills, or can't take the time to complain multiple times until things are set right. If you rent from Dollar/Thrifty, make sure to check your credit card bill afterwards. Be prepared to spent a bunch of time hassling the customer service people.

I reserved a van for 5 days (Sun-Fri) and informed the clerk that I only needed the car from Sunday thru Thursday after all. The total cost was estimated at $188. He informed me that I would only see a reduced cost of a couple of dollars which would be decreased upon return. He told me to select any van in lot, had to wait in line for over 1/2 hour only to be told that I picked the wrong one so I had to pick another one. I picked another one, waited in line and again was told I couldn't have the one I picked. Did this 3 times until I asked them to pick me one... Which by the way was not as nice as the other ones.
When I brought van back on Thursday, the guy quickly gave me a receipt which I later learned was for $632... a $444 increase from estimate! I had a plane to catch so didn't realize this until later. When I called customer service, the lady explained that because it was brought back a day early, they charged me the daily rate of ~$127 per day and there was nothing I could do about it. I asked to speak with supervisor or manager and she said she was from corporate and there was nothing I could do about it and no one above her to talk to.
I see nothing on the contract regarding extra cost for early return and find it curious that contract lists daily cost of late return of only $19.99! I'm so frustrated and according to the other reviews, I'm not the only one. How can this company continue to rip off their customers? I wish I would've had time to research this company beforehand but instead trusted the recommendation from Hotwire.com. Is there anything I can do to recover over $400?

Dollar Rent A Car appears to be the cheapest option when comparing prices but are quite masterful at getting your money without your awareness until the final bill is handed to you. Do not worry about holding up the line to make sure you thoroughly read the contract. An extra driver will nearly double your cost (they will not mention that), and don't fall for any extras like insurance or especially the tank of gas that's locked in at a "special" rate. They will tell you that the gas prices are projected to go up while you have the car. The deal on the gas is you need to return the car as empty as possible (which is very hard to do) and they charge you for a full tank of gas at your "special" locked in rate that is more than you would pay at any gas station.

I asked "Florence" at the front desk if there is a manager and she said no.
When she got done helping someone it was my turn and she held up her hand, told me in a loud voice for everyone to hear: "MAM! I AM NOT READY!" I was so taken aback! Mind you, I have been waiting for an hour and a half. So I waited again and she started answering the phones! There was a long line and she's answering phones?? Is that more important than the people in front of her who made reservations days in advance? I got so frustrated. So I waited, she also was arguing with me and another customer. The other customer actually told me "Good Luck" in getting to Clearwater in time.
Evidently, she also has been waiting frustrated. The next avail agent Avi said "Next!" I gave him my DL and CC and he looked at me like he was going to bite my head off! He said "What's going on?" I said to just please process the transaction for I have a very important appointment in Clearwater at 3 pm and it's already 2:45! He just looked at me and shook his head, then he screamed at Florence on the other end of the counter and asked "Florence, did you help this person?" Florence said "No for she was coming up the counter and I'm not ready! I never helped her!" What a negative comment! These 2 were having a loud conversation on the opposite sides of the counter and I was in the middle right there and a long line of people were just looking in awe at these 2. They made a scene! I was so embarrassed I wanted to walk out and go to Enterprise. They had no line and there were 5 agents.
Avi started arguing with me, telling me that I was screaming at him. I was not screaming, He was actually screaming at me! I asked who his superior was, he said "She is!" Pointing at Florence! Wait! I just got done asking her (Florence) if there was a manager and she said no so she lied right to my face! I tried to be patient but these 2 just added fuel to the fire. Roya, saw the whole thing and she graciously told me that she'll help me after she gets done with her customer. What a difference! It was night and day!
Roya diffused a situation that was about to get ugly. She was always smiling, empathetic to my needs and very professional. She should train these two in regards to Customer Service! She should be the manager or a supervisor. She was very professional in high stress situations and apologized! The two never apologized. They just have a big chip on their shoulder and gave me a cocky attitude. Never experienced such TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! They should not be working in this industry especially Avi. He's a hothead! KUDOS TO ROYA! She was able to turn a negative situation into a positive!

We have often found Dollar to be less expensive than more reputable car rental agencies such as Enterprise, Avis and Hertz so have made the mistake of selecting them every so often over the years and each time we completed our rental, we remembered why we said we'd never rent from Dollar again. We have our own auto insurance and have no need to purchase additional coverage, nor are we EVER pressured or tricked into doing so with other car rental agencies but EVERY time we've rented with Dollar, they've managed to charge us additional insurance fees - it's ridiculous.
I am embarrassed that they have fooled me so many times. I travel often and unfortunately, it seems I am overly trusting and do not check the fine print with every vendor I purchase from. I don't have trouble with hotels, taxis, airlines, REPUTABLE rental car agencies, but Dollar gets me every time. Shame on you Dollar for such deceptive tactics. I have to agree with the complaints I've heard on this site, and want to caution people renting out of the Tampa airport NOT to use the "SunCoast" highway while driving a Dollar Rental Car. The reason, is because there are two toll sections that do not have a booth where you can pay in cash. You have to drive under and be photographed. The state claims they will send you a bill for the toll ($1.06 for each) but in this case Dollar RAC gets the bill and they tack on an additional $15.00 per toll charge for "administrative fees". I was charged $60.00 on top of $4.24 in tolls.
I was (I hope you agree) understandably upset about this, and called customer service at the "collection agency" that handles these additional fees. They offered to settle down to a more manageable fee, but they were not inclined to waive the fee entirely which they should have done. They claimed that I did not read the full agreement that outlined this possibility. Sure, it was there in the "fine print" and my options were to pay this charge or buy a transponder for $52 for the week. At the time, I wasn't even aware that there would be a situation where I would not be able to pay cash for a toll. This possibility was not mentioned by the agent either.
As other complaints here have mentioned, the lines you wait in are long (it took me 45 minutes before I even got to the agent), and I didn't want to hold up the line behind me even more by reading a three or four page document before asking questions about the various tolls on Florida roads. I'm sorry but this is a disgraceful scam and the Hertz (parent) company should be ashamed of themselves for running it. Charging $60 for $4.24 worth of tolls. The state of Florida shouldn't be too proud of itself for allowing this either!
I'm also in agreement on the "gas" scams too. The best bet is to buy the "full tank" and bring it back as close to empty as you can. But of course you never will bring it back completely empty so they certainly make out there but for me, that's a story for a different day. I told the people in "customer service" what I thought of their business practices, and they quoted me the "you signed the agreement" line so buyer beware. They are out to steal your money as legally as they can. Ethically? Well, that is another matter.

WARNING: Long post! Just a word of advice to anyone looking to rent a vehicle: NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER rent from Dollar Rent A Car. EVER. Run as far away as you can to anyone else but them. We turned in our rental car from Budget Car Rental that we drove in from WA after we shipped our Prius and then picked up our rental for the month from Dollar Car Rentals. We reserved it via internet and it was a great deal. Less than $800 for the month. When we got to the counter, the worker then said that it was going to be $2000! PLUS an extra $30 a day for an additional driver. He then proceeded to tell us that he had added their insurance to it because our insurance provider, USAA, wouldn't cover rental cars.
There was a line forming so my husband just took it and then waited until the other customers were helped. My husband then called USAA to discuss our auto insurance and guess what? We're covered for a long-term rental car. My husband then goes back to the worker and tells him what USAA told us and he's clearly annoyed, giving my husband dirty looks while he's cancelling our original and re-doing our reservation. Our total bill is less than $800 as originally stated when we did our online reservation. The worker then says to my husband, "Do you want a 2016 vehicle? I can get you a really good deal on it!" Uhh, what? No, thanks.
We get to the car and it's a Chevy Impala. The keys say it's a 2016 but it's clearly not. The age of the car is not the issue. The issue, or rather issues, are that the car is dirty! Like, a layer of dust on the dashboard, trash in the back seat, cup holders, and console, the steering wheel is sticky, and when we turned on the air conditioner, some crumbs fell out and an odor quickly filled the car. After driving with the windows down and letting the air conditioner run, the odor finally abated. We're now stuck with this car for a month and if we didn't need a vehicle for appointments before we do this big military move to another country, I'd return it and be without a vehicle for the month. As it is, we will be driving it as little as possible. Maybe that's their gimmick: lure in the customers with low, cost-effective prices then nickel and dime them at the counter and if we can't charge them an arm and a leg in the end, give them dirty cars to drive.

I rented a car at Dollar Rent a Car in Abu Dhabi Airport in January. I paid 2 days and stayed 1 day and 3 hours. So far, it is ok. However, I didn't know I would have the worst experience in my life about renting a car. I am 64 years old, travel at least 6 times a year overseas and I rent a car in most places for the last 40 years. I had never a problem in any rental car company.
In Abu Dhabi they act as a gang and when I say it they said they would report my complaints to the authorities because I was using abusive language. ABUSIVE WAS THE WAY THEY STOLE MY MONEY. When I got a car, the guy tried to be fast and I said "let's try to check everything", and he replied "the car is ok, there is nothing on it." I took a general look at the car and I didn't see anything.
I am always careful with rented cars. When I came back to the Abu Dhabi Airport to return the car, there were a Dollar employee at the parking lot. I talked to him I was returning the car. On a not polite way his response was "You have to go inside." WHY? He was there besides the car. Later, I knew he said he was a "supervisor". Thus, I realized that a "supervisor" is a "very important position" to check the cars.
So, I went to the Dollar counter. The same guy took the keys and asked somebody to go over the car to check it. I said, "I would follow him", and the "supervisor" said it was not necessary. It took few minutes and he came back saying there was a scratch under the rear bumper. I replied it should be there before I got the car because I didn't touch the car anywhere, and when I got the car I realized the car was very low, so I raised my attention about it. He said I had to notice the Police to have it covered by insurance. I never heard about it (notify the Police about a scratch???). To tell the truth it was a 5 cm scratch under the rear bump on a black car. To view this was necessary to go down well.
Clearly, this was a setup to make more money for a car lease (extra money). I said I wouldn't sign the paper because I didn't agree with that. The "supervisor" said it was just a rule and they would send the car for inspection and for sure nothing would happens." I signed it against my will because I was in a foreign country and I had to go to get my plane.
Well, they CHARGED ME US$ 120 for a 5 cm scratch that I DIDN'T, where nobody could see it unless you bow, and if one used polishing paste the scratch disappear. But they did not have this intention but earn extra money. I felt very upset about it mainly because they use a name like Dollar. If it was not an international company and did not rent from them. When I got in touch with Dollar Rent A Car they answered me they could do nothing because Abu Dhabi office was private owned. Why they give the name for people who doesn't honour the brand?
I will never rent a car from Dollar anymore, in any place. I have told all my family to do the same and and I am telling the same to all my friends. After this, I checked on Internet about Dollar and they have thousands claims against them. They are not a serious company. IT IS A SHAME. They think because they are a company they can do what they want.

I rented a car at the Orlando airport. I was asked if I wanted the insurance and declined it. When I reviewed the contract it was on it. When I questioned the sales person about it, he told me it would be credited off when the car is returned. That was a lie. When I brought it to their attention they wanted nothing to do with resolving it. I did get help from Lisa on the 800 number and she credited back half the charge but I am still out $73. I get the impression this happens often with this group. I will never give them my business again.

Terrible Customer Service experience!!! I had a 7 pm reservation and went to pick up car, only to find out they closed at 7 pm sharp. Even though they knew they had a booking, they did not wait or call. So I found a closed business when I arrived at 7:05 pm. Called the posted number on the door which was the airport location and was told to drive all the way out there and they would transfer my reservation. Upon arrival, I discover that their taxes and fees are different at the airport location, and I was charged $80 more than what I should have paid at the Broadway location.
Sue, the manager at the Broadway location, only offered me 2 solutions to this problem the following day: either waste more of my time to go down to her location AGAIN so she could change the reservation, or offer a 20% discount, which still left me paying $40 over what I should have paid. This company does not value customer service and clearly only cares about their convenience and bottom line. I will never use this company again since they obviously do not value my time or patronage.

Too bad I did not read comments available before renting "Jeep Grand Cherokee or equivalent" at competitive prices. Las Vegas airport rental greeted me with an hour long line up of tired and nervous customers watching socialising employees. The car we got was Dodge Journey which is essentially car without ability to go uphill, have no acceleration, and actually slows down first when pressed on gas and had to change the gear... We described our driving - to see national parks around, but was not warned about car ability. Our later complaint was dismissed explaining that as long as length of vehicles are the same, performance, safety, etc... does not matter.
When we return this thing, we were charged extra $100 for trivial cleaning. We call two agent, first was rude outright, so we called again and second was polite, but apparently if company has to do anything to prepare vehicle to next customer - we must pay. His argument was, if he (personally) give car to me he would expect return it clean. I hope that Thrifty employees invite restaurant staff back home for dinner, because it polite thing to do, and pay for washing dishes separately.

I recently had the misfortune of renting a car from your company at Tallahassee Airport. It went downhill from there. You might note my reservation says "compact car or larger". According to "YOUR" website a COMPACT CAR is a "FORD FOCUS OR SIMILAR". It clearly does not state "A FORD FOCUS OR SMALLER". Again, from "Your" website. Size does matter. Just ask Donald Trump and Marco Rubio. Just to update you on car sizes I have conveniently printed them out for your viewing pleasure.
Oh, I forgot, the rude and ignorant entity (I didn't want to stereotype) you had working the counter at the airport told me the "Spark" was the "Manager's Special". And he didn't write the website. Lucky me huh. I had to inform my friends that they were special too and would have to drive their own car because they were neither Dwarf's, Leprechaun's or Muppet's (excluding Big Bird of course) and would not be able to fit in the back seat of the "Manager's Special".
It was kind of unique though. The "Manager's Special" had all the power of a motorized Chukka Boot, enough room in the trunk for a bag of charcoal and 2 gallons of water and I had to find Jesus and say 3 "Hail Mary's" before I tried to pass someone doing 33 MPH in a 55 zone while they were driving a white Buick and wearing a hat. I have been driving since 1963 and I have to admit it was the first car I was ever in where the speedometer and the Tach moved with the tilt wheel. What technology, don't you think. It shifted a few more times than an 18 wheeler would have, and the highest elevation in Florida is 388 ft.
I would like to advocate 1 option it didn't have. A "Hans" device would come in quite handy in this piece of crap. It would serve to save you a get together with a chiropractor after you apply the brakes with more than a shoelace so as to not dislocate your neck. I tried calling your customer service line about 4:45 PM. I spoke to another one of your fine employees who said, "Could you hold for a minute please." I was put on hold and at 5:00 PM was hung up on. I called back and got a recording that you close at 5:00, call back tomorrow. If I had run my company like you run yours, I would not be in Florida renting a car, I would be on welfare.
I had reserved a "COMPACT CAR" (see above) car 3 days in advance for 3:00 PM. My plans had changed and I called the day before and asked to pick it up at noon instead. I was told "Yes, Tuesday is our slow day and there will probably be one available." I showed up at noon and there was no one working the counter. 3 workstations but no humans. The rude and ignorant entity I mentioned earlier finally showed up and was informed told I would be lucky to get a car by 4:00 or 5:00. I returned at 3:00 read him the facts of life and received the "Managers Special" borrowed from Hertz, you still didn't have any.
I think it would behoove me to point out that about 5 people showed up in line behind me after their flight arrived to pick up their rentals (Hopefully not the Managers Special) and he said to me "Uh Oh, there are gonna be some upset people". Seems to be a habit with you people don't it. I was told this car was new and had no damage. After a 400 yd walk to this piece of crap and a 400 yd walk back and a wait in line I had to inform them of the large crack and dent on the right front bumper.
Returning the car was a joy also. Another 400 yd walk (other companies have people waiting in the parking lot for you) to deal with the same rude and ignorant entity. I was asked for the mileage which I didn't know. He told me to go get it. I informed him that the rental agreement was for unlimited mileage, I was a 100% disabled combat veteran (if you want proof of that I will be happy to send it) and could not make the walk again, "could you do it." His answer was "I ain't Doing that". At that point I decided "Discretion is the better part of valor" and walked away. As far as ever renting from you again, In the words of your rude and ignorant entity... "I ain't Doing that."

Very disappointed. The return time of the contract didn't match with the receipt (difference of 20 min). We were an hour late returning the car and we were not only charged for the extra hour (that would have been fair), but for LDW (optional service, we never accepted), plus LIS (without requesting). These automatic charges are not explained in the contract nor in the website, making it very misleading for customers. We ended paying $129.11 when the original price was 74. I will take further action to inform the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Office about this negligence.

This is going to be short and sweet. I rented with Dollar last October 2015 and was in an accident that was not my fault. I declined their insurance because my own insurance would take care of any accidents I was in. Well, unfortunately I was in an accident that totaled the car and I was lucky to walk away. I reported it to my insurance and was told that they would take care of it. Well it took 4 months to finish up because Dollar was not giving my insurer the information they needed to close out the claim. They keep asking and they would get the runaround or wouldn't get it.
Finally my insurer paid it based on pictures taken by Dollar. My insurance wanted their estimate of the damage but Dollar did not have an adjuster look at it. They just decided it was a total. My adjuster said they were the most difficult rental agency he had ever dealt with. I would never rent with them again. They were very rude to me on the phone when I called about an additional 75 dollar amt that they added to my deductible which I have to pay. I have no problem paying the deductible but I hate having to pay a 75 dollar administration fee. Give me a break. Rent with them if you want but be aware if you don't take their insurance and use your own in case of an accident don't expect quick results. They kept sending me letters saying I owed them this much (both regular and certified) and this was when my insurance was trying to get the information to close the claim. Horrible company.

I booked a reservation with Dollar in Ft Myers, FL. When I got to the counter I informed them that I would probably only need the car for a few days, but maybe a week. The customer service representative told me that it wasn't a big deal to return it early and I would only be charged for the days I use the car. I was quoted a rate of around $37 per day. I ended up returning the car after three days and was charged $75 per day of usage. Why was the rate hiked up by over twice the original rate? The reason according to customer service: "you were quoted a weekly rate and the rate is subject to change upon returning your car early." After about ten minutes on the phone with customer service and a circular argument with them they failed to acknowledge that the information I was provided at the counter was misleading.
They told me it was my fault for not reading my contract after renting the car. They would not refund me the difference in cost or admit that I was mistreated because they have no way of verifying my claim. Incidentally, if I had read the rental agreement after renting the car it would not have informed me that my rate would be jacked up to $75 because this information was not there. It does mention a rental increase but does not specify what that increase is. Suppose that this increase could have even been more. The customer service rep would not give me the phone number of anyone else to talk to or allow me to file a complaint with their company. She also fed me my favorite customer service line over and over again "I do apologize sir but...".

However, Dollar did not recognize payment of $405.35 and charged me an additional $525 plus $298.70 of taxes and fees. I rented a vehicle from them on 2-8-16. I walked in and asked if they had any rentals left. They said yes. I was quoted a rate of 389.50 for 8 days for a Toyota Camry. By the way this is a franchise location. They asked me where I was going and I said to Fenton, which is the next town over in Missouri. I asked if it had unlimited miles and they said yes.
I left the next morning and was making my way to Phoenix when I called in and asked them what a one stop fee would cost me. They said they don't do that. They also said, "Oh, you're in Phoenix. You're not allowed to take the car outside the bordering states of Missouri." I read the contract and it does say that. However they never disclosed that to me at all. It's almost as if they're trying to catch you. They now tell me my contract is void and they are going to call the police. I have never been treated so poorly in my life. I eventually talk to the owner and he says he's gonna charge me 15 cents a mile. Which came out to an extra 479 dollars. They are sneaky and not forthright. They are a franchise and can go what they want because I called corporate.

Upon returning my car at the Miami International airport location I accidentally left my cell phone in the middle console between the 2 front seats. I took my luggage and went up to the main airport lobby when I realized I was missing my phone. Within 10 minutes, I was back to where I had left the car and found that it had already been taken away. So I went to the Manager and asked them if I could get back in the car and fetch my phone.
After letting me stand there for a while, he went and got the car, and I saw that it had already been washed. I looked and the phone was gone. I asked him to call it, and it went directly to voicemail - which tells me someone had turned it off. I asked him to see who took care of the car, and he said "I have 10 washers back there. You just need to go to the dollar.com website and make a complaint". That's all I would get from him seeing that I had to run and catch my flight. There was obviously no compassion or effort from him to let me know they would do anything to get that phone back to me. Their site says if not claimed within 30 days it goes to "charity", which tells me that there is a supply of lost items available for the staff. I doubt a $700 mint condition cell phone will be given out to the Salvation Army.
Attempts to contact their customer service have me on hold now for over 35 minutes. On a speakerphone they finally answered. The lady gave me the number to a local number which is only manned by a voicemail service. They do not contact local offices and advised that I made a police report, which is my next action momentarily.

We flew from Michigan to Orlando on Feb. 6, 2016. We had our vehicle, a mini van reserved from Dollar. AFTER the reservations were made I looked up Dollar's reviews and I became very concerned about how our rental would go. I was apprehensive when we arrived at their counter and sure enough there were already six people in front of us in line. When we got to the counter the person helping us was very courteous and was not one bit pushy. She asked if we wanted insurance and I told here our auto coverage already covered for us but we would like their 'loss of vehicle use or gap' insurance. That was fine and she asked if we wanted the SunPass it would be an extra $50 for the week. We had already decided if it was a reasonable price we would get it just so we would not have to worry about any toll booths, so we got that and we're glad we did!
Some toll booths had lines at them and you would have had to pull out of traffic to pay then get back on. So it was worth it to us just to keep on going in the SunPass lanes! Next we were sent to a conveniently located parking garage and told we could pick any of the Dollar mini vans. There was an attendant out there that pointed us to the row of mini vans. The mini vans ALL looked nice and were ALL different makes so we just picked a color and make we liked and went to it. The van was very clean so we loaded up and left. When we finally got out of the hubbub of Orlando, we started checking out the van and it had 3,000 miles on it and was a 2016! It blended right in with all the other vehicle at Dollar and I would guess they were all quite new vehicles. We enjoyed the use of the van and had an excellent experience with Dollar car rental!

On January 22, 2016, I rented a car with Dollar at Houston Int'l Airport. The rates were super low so I ended up ungraded the car. They asked if I wanted to prepay tolls for the toll roads. There was a sign that said, “You have the option to pay when you return the car.” Since I wasn't familiar with Houston I opted not to prepay, thinking I could pay upon return if I needed to. My flight home a couple days later cancelled so I called to request an extra day on the car. I got a recording that said if I was extending my rental for less than 24 hours to call was needed. Ok fine. So I returned the car at the airport. There was no option there to pay for the tolls on the cashless toll roads that I racked up. The guy quickly handed me a receipt and walked off. I didn't look at the receipt until I got home and noticed they charged me $312.64 for what should have been $142.09 bill, including the extra for returning late.
They had doubled my rate. After a very lengthy phone call where I explained exactly what they could charge per my rental agreement which I still had, they agreed to refund me the $170.55 overcharge. As of today (Feb. 19) I still haven't received a refund. However, I did receive a letter yesterday saying I now owe them $119.50, $14.50 for the tolls I ran up (which I am happy to pay) and $105 in administrative fees!!! The notice said they will charge the card I used for the rental. I read through the fine print on the rental agreement and, sure enough, it says they will do this. I travel frequently and rent cars when I do. I have NEVER had such a horrible experience with a rental car company as this. I always read reviews for hotels and restaurants but never for car rentals. At the time of taking over the car staff at the counter never briefed me that this tag was not activated nor the tag was locked to avoid customers being misled. If I was told by staff or the tag was locked, I would have been mindful to pay all my toll payments at every gate when I was passing through.
On or about January 2016 after returning to my country Australia I received an invoice for US $129.00. (6 Toll amounts totalling $39.90 + Admin fee of $90.00, adding $30.00 for each toll charge). Isn't this ridiculous and what a rip off. I was shocked to learn such admin fees imposed on to toll charges of $39.90. I can understand if I was billed a reasonable admin fee but not this. I received the second invoice again few days later adding one more toll charge, now it has increased to $63.90. ($63.90 + Admin fee $135.00 - $30.00 = $168.90).
Now my total payment due has risen to $168.90. My credit card was debited on the 22/1/2016 for US $129.90 and totalling AUS $192.13. BEWARE of the Puerto Vallarta Dollar Rental Car location. DISHONEST STAFF. They will charge you for damage that was not yours by not accurately capturing the dings/damage that preexisted on the vehicle prior to your rent (even if you explicitly note the issue(s) with their staff prior to driving away). In my case, the markup sheet they gave me upon drive away did indicate a small pencil tip sized issue to note the dings on the driver side door (which I went out of my way to call out to their staff when I did my careful walk through of the car before accepting). When I returned the car a week later, the staff indicated the markup sheet only notes one ding, not 2 (yet both were there before I ever saw the car and it was their staff who decided how to capture that notation on the markup sheet to make note of the damage!).
My issue is not money as I have insurance and the amount they charged me is nominal. But there is something very shady going on. Covering staff damage to vehicles by pinning it on renters? Whatever. Don't waste your money or time dealing with this shady location. PICK ANOTHER COMPANY. You can get better rates elsewhere and at least ensure you have an honest contract/exchange.
