I guess Dollar/Hertz's bankruptcy troubles are making them desperate for money because they are quickly becoming the company known for tacking on wrongful and fraudulent fees. I picked up my on September 18th at the Portland airport in Maine, which was deserted. The car they gave me REEKED of smoke. But there was no one at the pick-up place to complain to. I left with the intention of reporting it the next day. (Learned my lesson there. Dollar will give you a disgusting car and then blame YOU for it!) Well, you can't get through to anyone by phone at Dollar. The customer service center was closed all weekend. Then they don't answer the phone during the week. They automated service actually put me on hold for an hour (during my vacation) and then disconnected the line! I had no recourse to report the damage. (Dollar eventually blamed me for "not filing a report.")

After a thoroughly unpleasant 10 days in a car that made my clothes and hair stink of smoke, I went to return it the car on September 27th at their Park Plaza location in Boston intending to complain. Wouldn't you know, there was no one at the drop-off location for me to report it to. It was another deserted parking garage. There were no vacuum cleaners to clean it myself, nothing.

Then I get my bill and they charged me $400 for "damage." It took me 2 hours (not kidding) to get through by phone to a customer service rep and find out what exactly I was being charged for. Smoke, they said. I explained that I do not smoke. I did not smoke in the car and the car was delivered to me that way. That I tried to report it, but could not due to non-existent customer service. He said there was nothing he could do. I asked to speak to his manager. Another 45 minutes on hold. That guy said there was nothing he could do and suggested I write to Hertz customer relations.

I emailed with 5 different customer service agents, each one even less effectual and more terrible than the last. They truly do not care. In their mind, the customer is always wrong. In the last exchange they sent me a photo of the damage. There was some sand on the gearshift. Unbelievable. I wrote back, So now it's sand, not smoke? Make up your mind. Also, do you not have a vacuum cleaner? $400 for sand?? Their story kept changing. Smoke. Sand. “You didn't file a report.” Basically anything to shift blame. Clearly, they are understaffed, both at their pickup and drop-off locations and at their customer service centers. But instead of being accountable and owning their mistakes, they blame the customer and tack on wrongful fees to boot. Why are they allowed to get away with this? It's fraud. Do not rent with Dollar or Hertz. What kind of company doesn't take the word of its customers? Oh, one that's in bankruptcy. Good luck with that!

This is my complaint regarding the policy about credit cards. I am a Dollar Express rewards member for many years and have not had any issues with Dollar, Thrifty or Hertz. My complaint is 1st I had to wait in the long ** line at the Hertz counter, 2nd, the agent asked for my ID and credit card, which I gave to her, she didn't ask me for my confirmation number or what company, She said she could not take my credit card because it did not have a chip. I was flabbergasted, What? She said that they have the policy that they only take credit cards or debit cards with chips! They have only machines with the chip reader only! No swipe!

Instructions from the General manager! So I was told I could go to another car rental business, they take cards without chips which was Alamo. Dollar could not accept my credit card because it does not have a chip! and I was not able to use my credit card at the Atlanta International Airport location that I use all the time at Dollar, Thrifty and Hertz, which I had used 2 weeks prior to that at the DCA location and in July at the Atlanta location. Really disappointing!

I rented a vehicle from SLC to Las Vegas through Dollar Car Rental. At the time, I spoke to the counter attendant and they said whether I dropped at Las Vegas or Phoenix, both options were the same price ($603) since it was out of state. I decided to go to Phoenix so I called and spoke to Alex (ID **) who gave me a new quote - $326 extra - so I asked to speak to a manager. He assured me that a manager would call back in 24 hours - they did not. I again called and was given the same story - no call back.

When I returned it in Phoenix, I told the attendant who again reassured me that it would not be an extra charge. When I got my final bill - I had an extra $678 charge. I reached out to executive customer service multiple times and they said my calls never took place despite phone records and said that they can reprice a contract whenever they want.

I rented a car from Dollar Rent a Car at the beginning of the year as I was planning a trip to Florida to see my elderly mother. Then the pandemic hit. Because of the virus, I had to cancel my plane reservations and rental car as I am just getting over cancer and at a higher risk. I contacted Dollar rent a car and they told me that they would give me my money back. What they did not tell me was that they were going to keep $50 of my money. I tried to reason with them and explain to them that I was going to be visiting my elderly mother at a later date after things were safe in the world but they did not want to hear it. They just told me that they were going to keep my $50 and that was that. I think that sucks.

Rented a Dollar rent car through Expedia at DFW airport. From the moment of check-in it was problematic. Because it was less than 24 hrs since the original rental and not a corp. account they made us purchase their insurance. We are a company, we have our own insurance. We did as they asked to get our employee on the road. He turned the rent car in the same day at the Houston Hobby airport, making sure to fill the car with fuel. Dollar charged us $95.29 for fuel that was not needed. Stayed on hold with that location twice and was rudely hung up on when trying to explain the issue. Went to DFW location to try to resolve the issue and was told to "call ** Houston! What do I look like? Customer Service?" Wow! Watch your receipts for bogus charges. You won't get it back easily.

I was charged $219.07 plus $55 for insurance. While waiting for her to get confirmation, I checked my email and my account. I got the confirmation and the receipt. After standing and waiting she tells me I owe $389. Um what?! She said they never received the payment. I showed the confirmation and the receipt. She's obtuse. I was so pissed that I immediately called my credit union and filed a claim. That woman had the nerve to question my making the reservation, even as she stood there reading it. Long story short, they claim they didn't receive the payment and expect me to pay an additional $169. That is a no. I contacted my credit union and will be getting my money back. Booked a car through CarRentals.com and picked up at the Dollar Rental Car counter at Orlando International Airport Feb 28th 2020. My issue is "Not" with Carrentals.com. It is with Dollar. I agreed to adding on the "Fuel Option" to my agreement and only that. I Did not agree to adding anything else. I signed the estimate and went on my way to enjoy my vacation. It wasnt until I actually received my credit card statement that I saw I was charged from both CarRentals.com and Dollar Rent a Car. Looked at my estimate and final agreement from Dollar and then noticed they had on there that they said I had "agreed" to LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) $271.92. $33.99 per day. If I was actually asked, I most definitely would deny this option. But they charged me for it.

First call to Dollar, I was on hold for 35 mins before a rep came on. Talked for a bit and she put me on hold again a few times and then the call just ended. Almost an hour of my time spent on the phone for nothing. Next day, called again. Spoke to another rep and then a supervisor. I was told "I am sorry, but you signed the estimate and you have returned the car and it is now a "closed" contract. We can not give you a refund. Next time You should read everything and ask questions."

Read several reviews on here on this exact situation that happened to others . So it sounds like a fairly common practice for them. So they know what they are doing and are doing this intentionally to get more $$ out of people. Apparently they are getting away with it. Never again. Please do not go to Dollar Rent A Car. They will try to fleece you, if they can get away with it!

I reserved a Dollar Rent A Car online in early January 2020 for a trip to Jacksonville, Florida. Our February 7, 2020 flight from BWI to JAX was delayed by 1 hour and 45 minutes due to the weather. Upon arrival, I went to the Dollar Rental counter and provided my information along with my automobile insurance card to the clerk. She processed the transaction and said that she "took care" of the auto insurance. I signed off on the invoice unfortunately. The clerk advised that we would receive a refund of $200 when we returned the car. The $200 credit referred to an additional $200 added to the bill and not to the insurance amount. I disputed the charge but was denied since I signed estimate. I didn't need the auto insurance through Dollar and believe this is a scam. The clerk made no effort to process my request but instead charged the additional amount that Dollar Rental provides. A very disappointing and costly experience. I will not rent with this company again.

Rented a car in Boston on 2/17/20 - returned 3/2/2020, paid by credit card. Two week later received a letter from Dollar Processing Services telling me that they had paid tolls attributed to my rental use and tacked on $40 worth of 'administration fees' that were due in 12 days and that they would charge to my credit card if I didn't otherwise pay them. Nothing was addressed or advised at the rental counter about tolls, and we have never had this problem with any other rental companies at Logan.

When I tried calling Dollar Processing Services to complain about the charge I was told that they had nothing to do with it and I would have to speak with Dollar directly. I called Dollar, was cut off several times in the process, and eventually was able to connect with an agent. He told me I should talk with Dollar Processing Services. When I told him I had and they told me to talk with him, he put me on hold and I was cut off. Calling back, I was cut off again. On the third try I spoke with an agent and ask to talk with a supervisor. I was cut off again. Calling back, I was told that no supervisors were available but one would call me back within 24 hours. After not being called back for 24 hours I called again, spoke to an agent and was put on hold for about 5 minutes until a supervisor came on the line and told me that they had no visibility in 'their' system of the tolls and administrative fees could not be waived.

We rented a car for pickup at Stuttgart airport in Germany. The price looked right. Two problems. One, the receptionist told us that no one that had held a driving license for less than a year could rent a car - per Hertz (parent company) policy. I am 61 years old and have been driving for over 40 years - but I moved to Nevada from California in mid 2019 and so have held a Nevada driver's license for less than a year. Fortunately I had a photo of my old California license on my phone and that was deemed to be evidence enough - although I would have been stuck if I did not happen to have the photo available.

The bigger issue was that we were told that - per Hertz company policy - we could not rent the car without also signing up for all the related insurance coverages. That had the effect of more than doubling our rental expense. Nowhere prior to our rental had I been informed or notified of this requirement - nor have I seen it with any other car rental company. It all seemed a bit scammy to me. I won't be renting from Dollar or Hertz again.

I used Dollar Car rental for the first time. I gave them the benefit of the doubt despite some of the BAD reviews. I received an amazing quote for SUV at the location at phoenix sky harbor airport. The check in process was pretty smooth. They sent me out to the parking lot to a Nissan Pathfinder. Not a bad vehicle. The front and back bumper were heavily beat up and dented. I told the guy at the gate and he said we know they get damaged from people taking luggage in and out. Okay, its only rental no biggy, I moved on.

Fast forward to the return date. I arrive at the airport at 330 am. The gentleman walks around the car checks and says you are good to go. I asked about a receipt he said he would email me. 3 days went by no receipt. I check my credit card statement and I was billed almost double the amount. I call the car rental place. You cannot talk to anybody at the location. I believe it was a call center in another country. I call the guy said he will send me a receipt right away and open a ticket for someone to call me from corporate. I said cant I talk to someone now. He said NO. He has to email corporate and they will contact me.

This time I receive the receipt via email. I was appalled went I saw the receipt. I returned the car on a Monday at 330 AM. It showed I returned the car on WED 11:47 am. Which was impossible as I was already back home. They charged me a late fee each day and double the daily rate of what my special rate was. I called back furious. Told the guy I see what happened. He explained he noted it in the email to corporate.

3 days went by and nobody contacted me, so I called my credit card company to dispute the overcharges. They went ahead and refunded me the difference. Then I started getting collection notices that dollar rental sent me to collections. I called back and then they said they escalated to corporate, then I receive an email from some guy who has a title of team lead who tells me nothing they can do as I reported them to my credit card. I responded it makes no sense. They said, "If you retract your dispute from the credit card company we will be able to assist. Otherwise there is nothing further we can do."

So then I call the better business bureau to get involved. They were able to contact someone at corporate and forward me their response. Dollar rental said: we are sorry to hear this happened, we ceased all collections of your debt with us. We have contacted the location and will develop a plan go forward. The better business bureau asked me I was satisfied. I said no, they never acknowledged they made a mistake and ignored all of my communications. They should refund me the whole amount of the car rental to make this right. They went back to them with my response. I was informed by better business bureau they have lost contact with them and unfortunately must close out the case. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE DO NOT RENT AT ANY COSTS.

Rented on Priceline for reasonable fee. Added driver and insurance for the day we needed the car. Car had a flat, but the Premium roadside assistance was a joke. Ended up having to fill tire and back track to get a new car at an airport. They gave us one from Hertz because Dollar did not have a facility at this airport. THEY WOULD NOT BRING US A NEW CAR OR FIX THE ONE WE HAD. WE WERE RIGHT OFF THE HIGHWAY!! Ended up taking a couple hours to get a new car which made us a couple hours late returning the car. Well afterwards we received a bill charging our company for an entire additional day of

    1) Additional operator
    2) Added insurance
    3) Premium roadside Service
    4) A Concession fee was added
    5) A Customer facility fee added

    6) A Energy surcharge fee was added

Dollar Rental was completely aware of the car problem and reason for late return. We disputed the charges but were denied. An absolute pathetic means of getting additional money out of customers. We have not used Dollar in the past and clearly will never use them again. Hope this helps save other travelers money. Side note, we never get the added insurance or roadside assistance but due to possible weather conditions decided to be safe. Will never do that again either. Back to National Rental Car

In September of 2019, I reserved a rental car with Dollar Rent A Car for my family's use while on vacation in Los Cabos, Mexico over the Christmas Holidays. The total for the one-week rental was estimated at $202.29 on the reservation I made through Priceline. When we arrived in Los Cabos on Monday, December 23, 2019, the Dollar Rent A Car counter attendants told us there were no vehicles available, and while they acknowledged our reservation, they said they could do nothing about it, nor did they really seem to care. We asked what they expected us to do next, and they simply shrugged and went back to their social conversations.

After calling Priceline and Dollar's customer service lines for a half hour without any help, but a lot of waiting on hold, we started approaching other rental car companies at the same counter. They all claimed that they were short on cars and the cost would be about $600-$800 to get a car for the week. There was no shopping to be done, because as we went from one rental agency to the next at the same counter, they all colluded to extort a high price from the foreign tourists. Finally, after haggling with Thrifty Car Rental (which I knew to be a sister company to Dollar, both of which are owned by Hertz, and may be a source to solve the problem), refusing all forms of insurance that I could (which involved getting my insurance agent in the U.S. on the phone and putting down a credit card deposit of $4,000), we ended up getting a beat-up sedan for $464.79.

Then on our second to last day of vacation, the car would not start due to a dead battery and we had to forego our day of activities to spend time on the telephone trying to persuade Thrifty to send out a replacement car or to replace the battery in the car we had. The valets at the hotel stated that all of the rental car companies in the area put secondhand parts into the rental cars and dead batteries are a common occurrence for Dollar and Thrifty. We lost an entire day of our vacation!

When we returned the car, the attendants were very well aware of what had happened from start to finish, and when I asked for a day's worth of credit on the final bill, they smiled at me and said "sorry." The entire experience with Dollar and Thrifty was a complete rip-off. Initially, we thought the lack of an available car was just our bad luck, but then we overheard other customers from Canada and the U.S. being deceived in exactly the same manner as we had been. They were also told that they had to pay for "special Mexican car insurance" which typically ran $600-$800, or they would have to put down incredibly large deposits as we were required to do to avoid the charges.

When Americans deal with American companies abroad, they expect the same level of respect and customer service that they would get in the U.S. Those are typically the reasons that we try to use U.S. vendors when we travel abroad. Not so with Dollar and Thrifty. Both fell incredibly far short of that, and in effect, colluded to steal from us the additional cost of the car, and to try to steal from us the costs of the "special Mexican car insurance." Mind you that the $4,000 we had to pay on our credit card was not just a hold on our credit card, but an actual payment that we had to hope to have returned when we returned the car. The entire transaction put a cloud over our entire vacation.

Dollar and Thrifty are both low grade rental car companies that I would never recommend to anyone to use. Personally, my family members will never rent from either one ever again, in the U.S. or abroad. At this point, now three months after all of this took place, I am still arguing with Priceline, Dollar and Thrifty to get any sort of credit back for all that occurred with respect to this car rental. None of the three have responded with any sort of consideration for even a credit against a future rental from them. It really shows how low grade they are as companies.

I used a discount site to book my car rental and thought I was getting a reasonable deal. I really don't like how they quoted a certain car and added OR SIMILAR to the rental information. I felt that the car I received, while in the mid-sized car class, was NOT in the same QUALITY classification. I only needed the car for a minimal time, so I was going to be OK with the car they assigned. It turned out to be the least of my concerns.

The real problem came when the counter agent asked if I wanted to purchase their insurance. Having gone through this before before I politely said NO. The agent then countered EVERY NO THANK YOU with another reason why I needed their insurance. He even went as far as asking me what my personal car insurance deductible was....NONE OF HIS BUSINESS...THAT'S WHAT! While I know it's their job to inform customers and try to sell their extras, I felt that if I didn't FINALLY AGREE, I wasn't going to get out of the airport and get to my destination. It was extreme pressure to purchase and I don't appreciate this business tactic.

Then when I needed to extend my rental, ALL OF ONE HOUR, I had to purchase insurance for another day. INSURANCE THAT I DIDN'T WANT IN THE FIRST PLACE. It's not even just the insurance. There was this fee and that fee that added up to a ridiculous amount of money. I brought my own Toll booth transponder, so I didn't need to rent theirs or pay their outrageous fees for not having one AND filled up the car with gas before returning, but the final cost of this car rental was absolutely ridiculous.

I've only rented a car twice before...from other car rental businesses, I should add, so maybe this is my inexperience, but the other times I haven't walked way feeling that I was taken to the cleaners just for a 3 day car rental. I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND DOLLAR CAR RENTAL TO ANYONE! I plan on making their headquarters know my experience, so hopefully no one else has this experience.

Got my rental from Orlando FL airport terminal. Explained did not need insurance because did reservation online and purchased 3rd party insurance online already. Even showed the representative the email that was sent to me. The representative then told me to put my card in the machine and agree to charges as there was also a 200 deposit to get car. So on top of the 200 deposit Dollar also charged $15.88 charge per day for “LIS”. Just found out that the “LIS” stands for the insurance on my receipt.

I was charged even when I told the representative I did not want or needed the insurance. Called customer service and even spoke to a manager and all they said is that I “agreed” to it so it cannot be refunded. SO BE WARNED, EVEN IF YOU LET REP KNOW DON’T NEED THE “LIS” THEY WILL STILL CHARGE...DON’T RENT HERE. They are bunch of crooks. Oh btw they are a subsidiary of Hertz. Shame on you for your business practices.

The young lady said I would get 100% of my money back. As it turned out they refunded all but 50.00. When I called and ask where the other 50 was, they stated that I was going to get a 50 gift cert from their parent company Hertz.. Also when I went to the local office of Dollar they had a notice on the counter stating that you have to leave a 200.00 deposit when I pick up the car. This was never disclosed when I paid. They might be the cheaper of car rental companies but BUYER BEWARE OF THE HIDDEN/UNDISCLOSED COST. I still have the 50 dollar cert. for which expires in June that I will never use.

For the most part, Dollar it is pretty good with their service except for yesterday 2/19/2020 I flew in from Dallas at Lawton, Ft Sill Airport in Oklahoma. I had already paid in full online for my rental and when I get there, my vehicle was rented out to someone else. I ask the lady at the desk why she rented out my car so gave the excuse that I stated I was going to be there by 10am when I specifically stated my time of arrival and I even provided my flight Itinerary stating my flight was due in by 5:45pm.

Needless to say, I almost got left stranded at the airport due to her poor decision making, lucky for me I was able to get the last vehicle standing by Hertz at a much cheaper price than Dollar. Regardless when I arrive at the airport, if I paid in full for a rental, then my vehicle should remain available until I arrive. Next time I will call every hour on the hour 12 hours before arriving or until they get sick of me calling just to drive my point across. I had to make sure my money was reimbursed too.

We reserved a vehicle online for $49 to be ready at 10:30 for pick up and the reservation was confirmed by Dollar Rent A Car. My sister-in-law and I paid for transportation to their location on 16th Street from the Miami Ship Port only to be told they did not have our car available for at least 4 hours. The manager gave us three options:

    1. Wait at least 4 hours for a car to be returned.
    2. Rent an SUV at $95, almost twice the price we were quoted. (The manager refused to allow us to have any other car at the $49 price they agreed to online).

    3. He told us we could try another rental place 2 blocks away.

Mind you, we paid to get to his place of business and our ride left us there, we had several pieces of luggage with us, and we are both over 60 years of age. There was no offer to help us with this situation, even when I called their customer service department. I would not recommend this company to anyone. If I could, I would have given Dollar zero stars. BEWARE! By the way, apparently, Dollar is now owned by THRIFTY, so I would be wary of them, too.

When I picked the car I was told to return it full of gas, and to make sure I fill up from a gas station within 10 miles from the airport and bring a receipt as proof of filling up! I agreed as I always bring any rental car full. However, on my way to Tampa from Sarasota to return the car after my holiday there was no gas station within 10 miles on I 275 without going miles out of my way to the airport. I returned to the airport with gas tank half full thinking it's not a big deal to pay for half tank of gas. I was charged $85 for half a tank on Chevy Malibu. I almost filled the tank for $23.50 a few days before. When I expressed my disappointment they said they charge $10 for gallon of gas that you pay $2.35 in a gas station, plus tax! Please do not rent from this company or Thrifty. I've rented from every company between the lower and higher Fox, E-Z, Hertz, Enterprise, etc. And have never experienced the joke of a service company named "Dollar\Thrifty". Reserved a SUV online through this company because it was one of the better prices by a small margin ($195 for SUV 4 days). I'm used to being thorough with my traveling experiences, so after booking I called the company (Dollar) because the confirmation gave me a car group acronym and not the words SUV. I was told on the phone that they looked up my reservation, and found that the car group code was indeed for the SUV. They gave me a number to call back if I had any trouble.

A few weeks later when I go to pick up the vehicle, I check in and was told that my reservation was for a smaller vehicle. After talking with them more I find the vehicle I actually reserved online was not even available. I called the number that they have given me, and the manager across the room answered, and simply said looks like the reservation on their end changed. And offered me an upgraded vehicle for $1330 extra! Or I could just take a pick up truck which I elected to do for a discount of $350.. They didnt take me to the car, and just showed me where it was by pointing and adding keys are in the car.

I walked up to a car covered in soot and grime. The inside still had trash from the last person that used it. I decided to just deal with it because I was already running behind. I go to the check out station, and the guy working asked for the miles, any visible damage, and asked about the fuel. I gave him all the information and added that the vehicle was a little under a full tank. I was told to make sure it's about full when I return...

Finished the trip, and was running late for the airport, decided to play it safe and return the car with 1/3 of a tank. (Should have taken a photos) I ended up paying $195 in fuel charges. They had me pay for a full tank plus some. After telling them that it was not a full tank when I started, they responded by saying there is no record of the vehicle being less than full. The person I was working with seemed almost like they were getting a kick out of my concerns for the crazy charges that I had been issued. I have doubts that they even looked at the vehicle before renting it out in the first place. Needless to say this is a company that I will always advise against doing business. The only reason I can think of them deserving 1 star is because the shuttle drivers were good. A good lesson is dont always go with the cheapest option, make sure you read reviews, and never give Dollar/Thrifty any of your money.

The car I received must have been on the way out of the fleet. It had out of balance tires, lots of road noise and had been run hard for the 40k miles (which is high anyway for a rental). Upon return the agent indicated she was sorry for the condition of the rental (Toyota Camary). Two things, I will be hesitant to rent from Dollar in the future and will avoid Toyota as a potential future purchase. TL;DR This place lies to you, charges you extra, then tries to blame you. Look at the reviews on Yelp, they are scamming lots of people. Reporting them to the FTC. Last year, over an hour wait to get a car. This year's wait (12/23) was short, but they don't have the car type we reserved, which I know happens and that was ok. But the service desk then lies and says they'll give us a different car type for no additional charge or we could sit and wait for the original car type we booked. The service agent then starts talking quiet and says she could even save us money by us taking this other car type. I thought, it's Christmas they want to get rid of specific car types that people aren't renting and I was fine taking anything as there were just two of us.

We verified with the employee by showing her our original charge via email ~$530 and she said "Yep, you will save around $200." She pointed out a total cc authorization on our new receipt of ~$360 and said that would be our end price paid and we would get a refund because we had prepaid more than that. When we returned the car, they wanted to charge us $167 beyond our original charge for the "upgrade" we took. We went back to the service desk and was told to see the manager, Rosaria (or a name similar to this) at the office in the garage. Went to the garage and asked for Rosaria the manager and a male employee said "You can deal with me." Asked again for a manager and he repeated "You can deal with me." Never gave us his name or said he was a manager. When we discussed our issue with this male employee he very rudely said it was our fault and we "should of checked our bill" or " should of verified this rate with multiple employees."

When I told him that was BS he said "lots of customers do this." I told him I was following up with this and asked for his name and he refused to give us his name or a business card. He said he could "knock the extra charge in half" then at the end of the conversation said he was only authorized to take off $75 of the $167. I guess we fell for a typical 'bait and switch'. Shady employees at a shady company. Don't give them your business. If you have no choice, make sure to verify everything on your receipt with multiple employees as the "manager" suggested/s I'll update this if I get a response. If this isn't resolved, reporting them to the FTC and disputing the charges on my credit card as this is a total scam being ran at this location. Look at the reviews on Yelp, they are scamming people left and right by lying to them or adding charges to their receipt without telling them.

UPDATE: Their customer service said because I signed a contract they will do nothing. They lied, mislead me, and misrepresented the contract to steal money. Submitting a report to the FTC and I suggest you do the same if they scam you.

I would not recommend Dollar. I've used them for the last 2-3 years because they are typically the cheapest option and as long as nothing goes wrong they're good. BUT my last car rental I had to modify because my rental dates changed and EVERYTHING went wrong. I pre-paid and with the price change of the modified rental they owed me a reimbursement.

Bad experience #1: Called customer service to see how/when I would be reimbursed. They couldn't answer my question so they transferred me. I discovered that Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty are all part of the same company because I got transferred to Hertz. They told me "Your confirmation number is from a 3rd party, we can't help". I got transferred 4 times back and forth between Hertz and Dollar before the call stopped for no reason.

Bad experience #2: Even though I was told on the phone (eventually I called back and got an answer) that I would be reimbursed in 1-2 weeks, I wasn't. So I emailed. I emailed the dollar.com customer service email from their contact info and received an email back from someone with a Hertz email address and a thrifty signature saying they couldn't help me because I booked through someone else. (I know! that's why I emailed Dollar, not you *facepalm*.) Bad experience #3: I finally got the thrifty-hertz email to realize they couldn't actually help and they said they would refund about $130 when I had overpaid about $600.

Bad experience #4: I finally disputed the charge through my credit card because it had taken over a month and they had only conceded to refund about $250. (#chasebank is awesome). Then I received a bill in the mail from Hertz. Ironically, it's not for the $600-$130 or $600-$250, which would at least be consistent with their previous communication. They sent me a bill for $600-$360. No explanation where that number came from and very inconsistent with the emails. *Still haven't resolved this last issue: my rental was in October and it's now January. Dollar may be cheap, but it'll cost you in the long run. Save yourself stress, money, and time by using someone else. And while your at it, avoid Hertz and Thrifty too. *credit where credit is due, their in person staff tend to be very nice. But, the in person people can't help with these things.

My Husband and I went on vacation last week to Texas. We decided to rent a car for the first time for both of us and it turned out to be a terrible experience. We started out by making the reservation on December 18, 2019 and we were flying into Houston, Texas on December 19th. We picked out the car and made notes that we didn’t want the insurance or car side assistant services.

We flew in and took the shuttle to the rental car facility. I went to the bathroom to freshen up and when I got back my husband was in a panic. The lady at the desk TOLD (did not ask or explain) that my husband NEEDED insurance and the car side assistant services with the deposit which was totaled at $557 INCLUDING the $300 I already put down the night before. The lady helping us to our car demanded us to get in our car, leave and deal with the pricing later.

When we got to our family members house, we called. We got transferred to 4 different people. The very first one told us we would be able to cancel our insurance and it wouldn’t be a big deal, yet we kept getting transferred with no one actually helping us. The last person we talked to told us we needed to call the actual airport office. So, we did. It rang and rang someone answered than hung up on us. We dealt with this issue for over 2 hours. We couldn’t go back to the airport right then. We called the next morning in which the lady we talked to rudely told us we need to talk to corporate and that’s the number we called then she told us we would have to go back in. We drove over 50 miles BACK to the airport because no one on the phone could help us. When we arrived, we still had to pay for 2 days of insurance. Which was over $100.

Not only did you ruin TWO days of our trip by wasting our time on the phone, making us drive back to the airport, but we still ended up paying for something we shouldn’t have in the first place. We specifically told you on our reservation we didn’t want or need insurance. Not one person was able to help us on the phone, no one picked up at the office and we didn’t get one apology or even a damn coupon to even remotely look responsible for not helping your customers. You took advantage of us and to me that is just terrible customer service, and unprofessionalism.

We specifically told the agent at the desk that we did NOT want the additional insurance added on the car, but she added it anyway. They only have a signature screen to sign when you sign for the car, so we did not see that she added insurance when we signed. We only found out after we returned the car and saw our bank account got charged an extra $200 for the insurance. We called customer service to complain and were told "sorry, you signed for it." We will not rent from Dollar Rent A Car again!

Watch out for the hidden charges! I rent a car from LAX through rentalcar.com. I prepaid before I pick up the car. On the day I got there, they told me they were out the car I wanted to rent. So they tried to downgrade my rental car. But I have a lot of luggage so they can't do that. At the counter, they ask me if I want to buy insurance. I told them no because I already buy whatever I need online. At the counter they asked me to sign for picking up the car. After I came back from my vacation, I just found out they have charged me for roadside service which I didn't ask for. Trying to contact them, they just reply 1 email saying there's nothing wrong on the bill. After that, they never reply my email again. Very bad experience! Definitely will sharing my experience with people from my country.

Beware of these scammers and liars! I reserved my car trough Hotwire website and when we arrived to pick it up at the Dollar car rental counter we were asked if we would like insurance to which we said "no, we have one" then we were asked to sign on electronic pad "for picking up the car" which we did. The receipt was folded and put in the envelope and handed to us. I guess they were happy they did their dirty business and scammed another customer since there was no dollar amount on the electronic pad that we signed and we were told we are signing for picking up the car.

Preying on the tourists is what they do because since we declined insurance it never crossed our minds that they will add it anyway and made you sign for it without your knowledge. Forget about seeing your money ever again because they will argue that you purchased insurance and signed for it. Awful company that figured out how to scam people and nothing you can do about it.

When I booked my reservation online the price provided was $105.55 however upon returning my car in a drop off line where no person could be found, I received an email letting me know my final bill was $267.16. The major difference was that the per day rate quoted online when I placed my reservation was $20.71 but when I received my final bill the per day rate was listed at $82.29. Not a soul around I could speak with to resolve my problem so I am currently waiting on a return email. Not the type of customer service you want. I would have ranked 0 stars if I could have.

The process of renting through Dollar Rental Car was very confusing for a first time car renter. At check out, the cost of the rental was different than the estimate I was given when I reserved the car by over $100. I asked about this and they told me that they had added a bunch of insurance services. It wasn't clear that these were optional until I pressed harder in questioning. They also didn't go over any other policies (including the policy of how much it would cost to not return the car with a full tank). So, when I returned the car with half a tank of gas left in it, they overcharged me for 3/4th of a tank. When I called to report this and get the added amount refunded, they said that they couldn't verify that this was the case because I had not taken a picture that could prove this.

I was able to get a one-time $30 refund after speaking for a while with the customer service agent, but the overall experience was incredibly frustrating. It seemed like their system was purposefully unclear and designed to result in overcharges that the consumer would have to pay. It was very complicated for a person who hasn't rented cars very often, which shouldn't be the case.

They give you only two choices. 1) You can rent ez pass tag for $16 or they will pay ez pass for you and charge you $15 admin fee. So in other words. If you are driving through the tall of $5 (example) you will pay either 5+16 or 5+15. They do not give you an option to just simply legally pay for the toll. Period.

Big mistake, when being processed for my ID and credit card, I didn't opt for extra insurance for an additional driver or the prepaid toll plan and have three other people to prove it. Yet when I returned the car they charged me a total of $1200 for the compact car that I drove a handful of times.

I phoned to clarify and they said they charged $14 for not filling the fuel tank upon return, I informed them I had in fact filled it upon return and the other $400 charge is for additional insurance I apparently purchased... I explained that I didn't not opt for the additional insurance and that their Rep had scammed me, but they are refusing to comply, so I have paid $1200 for a compact car that was scratched all over and the brakes grinded metal on metal. 1. On my bill they charged me for gas when I left the car on full at drop off. When I dropped the car off the lady told me to leave the receipt in the vehicle, so I did. Thank goodness I took a picture of it before leaving because I was still charged for gas.
    2. Also, they charged me over $12 a day for a toll pass. When I talked to the gentleman when I rented the car, he told me it was a $10 charge, not that I would be charged every day and for more. Might as well have paid the tolls directly.

    3. This same gentleman asked if I needed any coverage. I told him no because USAA covers me. Without my knowledge, he put a $96 Damage Waiver fee on my agreement. Because I told him no, I had no idea he still put it on there. That is not ok.

This company is a scam. Don’t rent here. When I talked with someone on the phone (Shay), she basically told me there was nothing she could do and that I was screwed. She was of no help. I will be disputing charges on my credit card now.

WORST EXPERIENCE WITH A CAR RENTAL COMPANY.

    1. A Dollar rental car reservation was accidentally cancelled and I got on the phone immediately. I waited several minutes. The agent on the phone said the reservation cannot be reinstated. She insisted that in order to reinstate the reservation after it was mistakenly cancelled that it had to be less than an hour. It was only 18 minutes since the cancellation.

    2. I received an email from Dollar that the reservation was (erroneously) cancelled with the TIME it occurred in the email. I told the agent I have proof and I can forward the email to her. She didn't care about the email and kept saying the time it occurred was in her time zone. I explained that Eastern time zone is not the same as Central time zone. I got crickets.

    2. Now the supervisor wouldn't address what the previous agent said about the "within an hour" change. I asked if making the change to reinstate the reservation within the hour is acceptable. I got crickets.

    3. Then the supervisor said that the reservation was reinstated and everything is the same as it was originally booked.

    4. I happen to look up the reservation on dollar.com and the PRICE OF THE RENTAL WAS INCREASED BY ABOUT $50!!!!

    5. I call reservations and the agent was hardly audible due to a rather heavy accent and I finally said I will not use their corrupt company again. To tell me that the reservation was reinstated and everything was the same was a lie. They INCREASED the price and was hoping to get away with it by not telling me.

I booked my travel plans well in advance. I knew I needed an SUV because I had a companion that uses a wheelchair. I found the shuttle to Dollar car rental a disappointing experience from the start. We got to the shuttle and the lift doesn't work. The response was he doesn't walk at all. My reply, "No." "Oh well we don't get a lot of need for a lift." "Well you do at this moment." So they leave us there and say they will send another shuttle. 20 minutes later a new shuttle pulls up. Fast forward to the rental desk. We go through the agreement and, "Ok I have insurance no. I'll bring it back full of gas. No smoking. No problem." "We don't have your Escape." "Oh we rented that a little while ago." They talked a customer into an upcharge.

Meanwhile I have to transport a wheelchair and I know it fits well into that vehicle. Perfect reason why I reserved that SUV. They looked on the lot oh there is a minivan for an upcharge. Nope. Not paying any extra. Now it's getting late. I have an hour and 40 minute drive to my destination. "Oh I have an Equinox I'll give you for no extra charge." Well I certainly hope not.

Fast forward to the next day change oil message pops up and it stutters on acceleration. Ok drop off there is some cat fur transferred from my suitcase. My daughter has beautiful long hair cats. I showed the attendant. Apologised for the hair. She said, "Don't worry about it. No problem." Then I get a charge for $150.00 for cleaning. Never again I'll prepared to transport a disabled person not having what was expressly requested and charging exorbitant amount for a little stray cat hair transfer. Do yourself a favor and spend a little bit more and have a better experience somewhere else. Pass Dollar car rental by.

My daughter rented a car. She had not opt out of plate pass all inclusive daily fee, therefore, she got charge $23.00 for 2 $1.00 tolls. Had she opt out, if she was told, then she could have paid the $1.00 per toll, but in the event that the transponder was open, she would still get charged and would have had to prove it via receipt. This is just a warning for everyone renting and paying tolls - opt out, make sure transponder is closed and save your receipt. Very sad to take advantage of inexperience.

They say I went through 3 different tolls without paying. I went through multiple tolls and paid every time. This is just a company's way of overcharging you. Never EVER should anyone rent from here.

I did a lot of research on car rentals in Europe because I know that it is recommended to use Credit Card Insurance since the one provided by the car companies more than doubles the cost of the rental. I went to Dollar Rentals Website and found that they said that you should check with your Credit Card company to see if they will allow it (https://www.dollar.com/AboutUs/GeneralPolicies.aspx#LossDamageWaiver). I called Dollar Rental and told them I was going to Europe and wanted to rent and use my credit card for insurance.

They told me that as long as my Credit Card company covered all the countries and I had a letter from Chase I would be good to go. I called Chase and they provided a letter for me. When I showed this to agent in Munich I was told that they would not take it and that there was a secret list of accepted Credit Cards that would work. My brother in law used Sixt and they accepted Chase Sapphire. I would highly recommend using them for that reason. I get the feeling Dollar Rental/Hertz is just milking its customers for a ton of extra cash. This should really be made illegal.

Their billing dept said they didn't have my reservation # on file and told me to call back 866-424-2226. They made me called other dept back and forth 3 times with no resolution, so I gave up calling them. How can one department in the same company said they found my reservation and the other department said otherwise? Got to say, I'm pretty frustrated because it was a pre-paid transaction and they already took money from my bank account and all I owed them was the tax to be paid when I pick the car. I don't know what to do or who else to call, I just hope that the car is there when I arrive to Minneapolis on July 3rd.

I arrived at Daytona airport to pick up my car rental and I was delayed due to them not having the car insurance I purchased, then overcharged me when they clearly told me over the phone they would not charge additional for returning the rental at a separate location in MCO Orlando airport. To top it off they have false toll charges at roads I didn't even drive on. I disputed the charges and they didn't even investigate instead asking me for proof of receipts that I was somewhere else at the time. Really, that is ludicrous for a company to ask such a request from a consumer? Why didn't they just check with the highway patrol and get the proof of video?

I usually rent our vehicles from Dollar when we go on vacation and this was the worse service I have ever encountered! Firstly when we went downstairs to collect our car (which was suppose to be a Santa Fe) it was not ready. This was fine as we were aware that they were very busy earlier in the day. There were 5 people waiting to get their vehicles as well. It was only when the attendant stood you in the lot and shouted to the group of us and yelled "YOU!" Now there are 5 people all standing in the same area waiting on a vehicle and he continues to point in our direction yelling "YOU! YOU!" Now picture 5 people all looking at each other all pointing at themselves going "Me?"

At this point myself and the guy next to me walk forward and the attendant shouts at me "YOU!" The attendant then carries me to a fully loaded car and I say to him, "That's not mine. I rented a standard SUV," he starts shouting at me so I look at him and tell him not to be rude. He then looks at my paperwork again and shows me an SUV and proceeds to tell me "you don't be so rude to me next time." At this point, my husband says to him, "What did you say, give me your name," the attendant covers his badge and says NO!

All we managed to see was the name Juan on his tag. My husband and the other customer who is also upset by the entire situation now because we have all been subjected to the attendant's rude behavior ask for the manager. 'The manager' suddenly pops out of a car (to be honest we aren't sure that he is the manager) because he did nothing except agree with the attendant. My husband then put the luggage in the vehicle and we drove off with no resolution after traveling for so long. I opted to write a review instead!!

05/22/2019 - My family vacation to Dallas. Everything went great until we got to the Dollar Car Rental at our destination DFW with our Manager's Special car rental reservation. We got to Dollar Car Rental booth at DFW around 3:30pm. 4 people in line with one employee. That's fine. We were in no rush. As we were standing in line we started hearing confrontational conversation with the lady rep with 2 other customers who was in line with us. They were older elderly people.

Anyways after 15-20 min wait still one employee, got to the booth. I gave here my Confirmation Number first and last name. Then she started by saying what kind of car I wanted. Well obviously my 2 kids were standing around me so I said I was hoping to get a small SUV or a 4 door car. Computer typing ... She was like sure then gave me a quote of $580 which I've made a reservation for a Manager's Special of $$358.23. I was like "OK can I get a 4 door at least with the manager special." She looked at me and said, "Sure but the car doesn't have a trunk." Lol.

I was like, "What do you mean doesn't have a trunk." She straight up told me the manager special today, is the car without a trunk and won't fit my family. I was like then, "What is a manager special or anything special about it when you are giving me the worst rental car?" Lol. I thought she was joking around but then realized real fast that she wasn't and remember why all the other customers were are all pissed.

Anyways I politely ask, "Can we please get at least a 4 door car that can fix my family." She was like nope and handed me the $580 dollar quote and said, "You can go elsewhere to get a better deal and come back if you can't," and said to me if I can't find anything out there I can just come back without waiting in line again. Oh yeah she was like just don't go to Hertz or Thrifty cause it's the same company. SERIOUSLY!

WTF... ISN'T A SPECIAL NOT JUST A SPECIAL ... IT'S A "MANAGER'S SPECIAL." All you can do was give my family the worst smallest rental car a car without a trunk WTF. Anyways long story short we was able to book with ALAMO car rental for a little over $400. I’m everyone got the Manager's Special and got up there and was given the same ** and rip them off especially older elderly people and just don’t want to deal with it so they got them. I will never never ever rent a car to Dollar car rental.

When I called customer service, their reply: they can't give me back my money because I signed for it. I thought I was a fool, but after reading reviews after reviews from many different sites, I had no chance. Their victims are female, male, young and old - they have no decency. This is not just a one time mistake - this is standard practice with this business and they have got away with it.

I also filed a complaint with the FTC (1-877-382-4357). When I asked them how Dollar can keep doing this, their reply is that not many people are filing a complaint. So I went to Dollar Facebook page and I shared the info to similar victims, to report it to the FTC and their Atty General, and Dollar deleted my post. This is how they get away, by silencing us. They will continue to say that this is not a standard practice but it is. This is not just a simple "mistake", when you read reviews after reviews of the same situation -this is how they operate and make money. Please read other reviews and be the judge yourself.

After 2 days I went to return a car and called that people that I will be 15-20 min late than the return time. They said that if I will be late more than 29 min they will charge. I agreed and reached after the 20 min of the return time which is of course within their timeframe.

There was a huge line to return the car and it took me 25 min to return the car. Being their mistake they charged me 3 days car rental charge saying I have returned it late and more than 29 min. Even though it was their mistake both the time they and spoiled my trip. When I am asking for refund they are explaining me policy about them and giving excuses. I will never ever rent again from this company and never ever recommend anyone to take a car from here. Either they should refund it or they should have not charged it. But no they dont care. This is not the way they are dealing with their customers. My friends has and me rented a car hundreds time. Never had this horrible experience. My experience with Dollar at the San Diego airport has left me feeling lied to and swindled. I should have known better, but this was my first trip to California so I was on unfamiliar ground. And I was pretty wiped out. Anyway, I arrived at Dollar after 16 hours of travel time. At their counter, out of 14 workstations 3 were open. Had to stand in line for about 1hr 15min. Having booked an pre-paid through Auto Europe, I expected my voucher to be honoured, possibly with a few extra fees. The counter people added fees which almost doubled what I pre-paid through Auto Europe. They were very argumentative and aggressive, insisting that I was required to pay mandatory insurance. They wore me down and I paid. Later, I actually read their contract (slightly over 9,000 words printed on a single 8 1/2 x 14 sheet, all caps). This confirmed that what I had purchased was neither insurance nor mandatory.

I tried getting through to their customer service line to no avail. I decided to let it go, just enjoy my trip. Then came the toll thing, prompting me to write this review. During the trip I went through two automated toll booths. I promptly created an account and attempted to pay my tolls online. I was prevented from paying because it was a fleet car. Again, I attempt to contact Dollar by phone, but when I picked the "toll" option, their IVR cut me off. Fast forward a month, and I receive an invoice. $7.28 tolls and $30.00 administrative fee. Oh, and the due date of the payment was the same day as the postmark!

I tried three times to provide feedback to Dollar through their website, but when I hit send it says there is a problem and they can't post. I actually laughed out loud - it was like having a complaint box mounted over a shredder. I have to say that the car was good, clean and as advertised. But they managed to almost double what I had pre-paid, and have blocked all channels of communication. Dollar, you obviously don't want to hear from me so I promise you never will. If you have to deal with this company, do your homework and don't believe anything they tell you. And don't go through automated toll booths - you will get hit with huge surcharges, and in California the scenic routes are well worth the extra time.

I just had a horrible experience with Dollar Rent A Car. I choose them because Dave Ramsey recommends them on the show. I love Dave Ramsey and the baby steps, I'm on step 3 and so excited to be out of debt and in a position where I can help my family when chaos hits. My uncle is going through surgery and my dad (his brother) wanted to go down to California and see him so I offered to pay for his rental car. I'm a big Dave Ramsey fan and I have no credit cards. So since I listen to the show, and I know he endorses Dollar, I just automatically went to Dollar to pay for my dad's rental.

I thought it would be wise to prepay for the car to make sure everything would go smoothly. I made a dollar rewards account and paid for the car online directly through the dollar.com website. I set up my dad as the primary driver, since he was gonna do all the driving. Then on Friday, I met my dad at the airport and we went in to get the car. When they asked for a card in his name, he gave them his debit. The card didn't work. I'm not sure why, but he didn't have another card on him. So I asked if we could adjust the reservation and add me as the primary driver. The lady at the counter said since I booked through a third party, I couldn't change the reservation. This confused me, because I booked directly through dollar.com. So I asked what my options were. She said if I had a credit card, I could book a new reservation.

UMMMM, I came to Dollar because of the Dave Ramsey referral and I have no credit cards. Plus it's advertised everywhere that they do worry free debit cards. So I told her I have no credit cards and asked if we could cancel the reservation. She said she couldn't cancel because I prepaid and gave me a number to call. So I called the number and no one answered. I asked again if there was anything we could do? She said we could book a new reservation in my name but would have to wait 24 hrs before we could pick up the car if we were using a debit card. My Uncle is waiting down in California. It was super important to get the car that night - which is why I prepaid and showed up on time with everything we needed. So that couldn't work.

Basically she couldn't help in anyway and couldn't seem to give me any information about how I could cancel or get help from anyone. It was so frustrating to be in the middle of a family crisis and just wanting to help my dad go see his brother, only to face this situation where they had my prepaid money but no ability to help us get a car. I have plenty of money and if they could have just added me as a driver or had some sort of friendly customer support to help me get this together it would have been a completely different situation. So my hands were tied, I clearly couldn't get a car from Dollar - even though I had already paid for it.

The crazy thing is, Enterprise Rental Car overheard and waved me over. They were super nice to me and allowed me to book a car with my debit card and have it the next morning. They even sent me a text and offered to drive me back to my house. It was like night and day, their customer service was so great. My dad got his car is he's heading down now to visit my uncle.

I'm now battling with Dollar to try to get my money back. Turns out they use a company called cartrawler.com to book prepaid cars. So far they have told me I cannot have a refund even though they couldn't give me a car. Their customer service has been super rude to me over the phone. I tweeted to Dollar and that has been the best experience so far, they are at least trying and being nice and friendly but everyone else I have dealt with at Dollar has been super rude to me. I'm not expecting a refund at this point and I learned a big lesson about rental cars. I did some searching and they have so many complaints against them, I wish I had searched before I paid $$. I hope they can do some updates to their website and revamp their customer service so others don't have to go through what I'm going through. This was super disappointing. I'm so thankful for Enterprise, for helping to save the day!

I said fine, I called back the customer service line and they told me my total will be $500 because four days is considered 1 week. They eventually charged my card of all expenses $614. They claimed the car was empty, it was on 3 quarters of a tank full, I was charged $114 for that. If my rate is $37 or $38 a day why charge me $300+ for additional hours. Stay away.

I am a disabled veteran so I don't make a ton of money. When mother died suddenly I had to fly home for her wake. I made a rental car reservation and prepaid online, for later that day. I received an email from Dollar confirming the receipt of payment and my bank reflected the same thing payment made to Dollar Rental Car. Only on the confirmation email did the reservation information say a 24 hour hold on the car could be applied. When I landed a few hours later went to the Dollar counter. The clerk informed me that I would not be able to rent the car until 0200 am and they closed at one. I asked for a refund to rent from a another place and they refused saying I needed to call a website I had not ever been to because they we are paid not Dollar.

I bought a bus ticket and was late to the wake but did make it with 10 min to spare. The past three weeks I have been lied to, hung up on, transferred to dial tone, had to provide a bank statement proving the mi came out. They will give me only 2 numbers to call and who belongs to what number is different each time I have to call back now 23 and counting. I have been told by both Dollar and this phantom website Cartraller.com more than once they will not return the funds to me at all.

Finally after two weeks of 2 hours a day arguing and fighting to have the rental car charge from a car I never rented back, I get one of the liars to admit that it it actually Dollar who routes all prepaid on line rentals to Cartraller. They do this so they can steal your money. Cartraller has no contact info on their site anywhere and any email they send has no contact number, will even delete after 24 hours so you have to save them somewhere else. It is clearly the same company running both. That allows them to not rent to races they don't like and blame another then steal money, charge bogus fees, all sorts of illegal behavior.

Ironically the reason I refuse to use a credit card renting a car is Hertz robbed me before so badly I have never used them since and never will. Guess who owns Thrifty and Dollar. Hertz. How one company can own two competitors with different names. All three have the policies of theft. It robs the people of choice and the market of self regulation.

Almost a whole month has passed and they still have not paid back my payment for a service they them refused to provide me. They have no documentation supporting any claims they have made, they lie constantly, and will hang up on a caller in an instant, they have shell companies hiding money so readily they don't know who pays for what. Hertz rental is the worst company I have ever done business with. They are deplorable. Here it is 0200. I can't sleep through my hunger pains. I already gave my future in service of the country. In my time of morning my only relative Hertz was there with a fresh lemon for my wounds. Even paying me back now would make little difference to me, I work as much as I can out every penny counts. I never thought the day would come that corporations have no laws and answer to no one while we pay all the taxes for their benefit.

I have never felt so openly disregarded. By my government, by my country, by this company by far the most. I'm just a poor veteran with no voice, no advocate, no attorney, living hand to mouth at 45. I am an easy target so this continues until Dollar, Hertz, Thrifty or whoever they are get tired of my pain and I can just sit and suffer. What a fool I have been. This is what I bled for? I go over there thinking I'm securing our freedom and come home to have the same guy I have been getting shot at and by denying me a rental car I paid for in what was my home.

When I left, paying for something meant you had purchased the product. Now it means I may or may not get anything for it. I can again be denied because of my race judged by my enemy a decade ago. Now a license to steal with no recourse by me available, because I was told we were all Americans and it was our duty. In the eyes of Hertz that's just a hustle so they can do their part to sell you out when you come home because they stole your rights while you bled for them.

Dollar Rental Car charges a $15 dollar administrative fee for every toll that you go through...meaning every increment of highway that go through that has tolls adds a $15 charge on top of the actual toll. The Dollar Rental Car near the RDU airport did a terrible job of even mentioning this fee despite having a major toll thoroughfare that leads to the airport. It is appalling that they would not warn customers about such a ridiculous fee.

I booked my Dollar rental car on Booking.com. I paid $134 at the time that I booked and was told that when I picked that car up I would only pay the taxes so the total I paid would be around $200. I never agreed to any additional charges at the time of picking up the car so they told me the total would be $208, which seemed right based on the original quote. Later I discovered that a Loss Waiver charge was applied without my consent or knowledge and the $208 I was quoted was on top of the $134 I had already paid. The fee was added to my bill without my knowledge by their employee.

The employee told me when I picked up the car that I would only be charged for the taxes since I had already paid the other part of the bill through Booking.com. I even called Dollar the day I picked up my car asking about the charges and the Dollar phone rep said that I would be reimbursed the amount showing on the receipt when I dropped the car off and that was just a holding fee like a deposit in case something happened to the car. The Dollar employee at the Charlotte airport obviously tried to trick me into signing for the loss damage waiver without my knowledge and therefore this was a fraudulent act by the company. Beware of this scam if you ever aren’t from Dollar.

In the middle of our 7 day road trip after traveling on a dirt road the low pressure light came on. We stopped and filled the tire with air and within 10 minutes the low pressure light came back on. We decided to find a motel so we could be safe and call for assistance. When I called the person assisting me gave me two options, one was for one of us to ride with the tow truck driver for two hours to pick up the car and drive it back (as they had no driver to bring us one) or we could wait until morning and call them back and they would arrange to have a car dropped off to us. As it was after six by now and we had been driving all day we decided to wait until the morning.

When I called in the morning nothing had been set up like I was told the day before and they had to get a manager's approval to drop off a car. After an hour and half and three phone calls still no approval. We then decided to take the two hour drive as we could both go. At this time no one could answer whether we could be reimbursed for the room. Once we got to the Raleigh/Durham airport the counter person told us we had to wait to the end of our trip to make any adjustments. We then asked to speak to the manager who offered us a free upgrade stating the other would have to wait to the end of our trip. When we got to the new car it was the same make, model and color of the car we just turned in so back in to see the manager and another car.

By this time we had wasted the night before and half the day and were two hours out of our way. At the end of our trip the Dollar at the Myrtle Beach Airport is independently owned and had no staff on so we were checked out by Budget and again they could not give us answers on any adjustments. Was told to call corporate. So the next morning I called corporate and the only offering for the aggravation was to take the $108 off the bill for the second driver. Not the best day of our road trip as we had to cancel the plans we had made and we lost a day.

We said that we would like to get our specialty car and hit the road asap, and he tells us we will be getting a compact class car (most basic option, 150$ less than the specialty segment). We ask why and he goes, "Specialty option means you get a free upgrade if the compact is unavailable and if the next level is not you get one more upgrade and so on." So I said, "Specialty basically means compact then?" He reluctantly says yes admitting the false advertisement (the icon for the specialty was a question mark). Anyways we keep calm and agree to it.

He says we will have to pay for insurance which is more than the car's rental price. I say we take full responsibility and the guy FREAKS OUT! He literally said we will most likely to be involved in an accident in Florida and we are making a mistake. I say, "It's fine, IT'S MY LIFE, MY MONEY" but he was just so unhappy that he couldn't get us to buy the insurance. We take a paper and go down to get the car, no one at the front desk in the garage. We wait for 10 mins and a lady says, "Yeah. Just go down this row and get the car." I was stunned when she took 10 seconds to explain what we have to do and turned back to where ever she came from. We were a group of 9 friends traveling to Key West via Miami International Airport and decided to rent a 12-passenger vehicle to take the scenic drive down. Dollar Rental was the only rental company to have a 12-passenger vehicle available at this time. So, we went ahead and booked. We waited 45 mins before we could get the vehicle, only after checking in several times with the representative who assured us they were “getting the vehicle ready” and offered us bottles of water while we waited.

Upon receiving the van, it smelled of strong disinfectant (not household, but could have been insecticide in hindsight). We aired it out but thought nothing more of it and went on our journey. 25 mins into our ride my friend felt something crawling on her arm, brushed it off, but didn’t see what it was. We stopped shortly after for food and once we turned on the van light, much to our horror, there were numerous small bugs scampering all over our belongings, the seats, and on the floor. The bugs were roaches!!! We were SO GROSSED out!! We immediately vacated the van of all our belongings and attempted to get a hold of a representative at Dollar Rental for assistance but there was no answer on any of the numbers on the pamphlet. Even the 24 hr emergency roadside assistance DID NOT answer. Are you kidding me?!

We were beyond angry, absolutely disgusted, and quite frankly stranded in a parking lot in an unknown neighborhood in Miami. Eventually, after waiting nearly 35 mins on hold we spoke to a representative who advised us that our best options were to return the vehicle to the airport so that we would not incur “vehicle neglect” charges, or wait close to ~2 hrs for a replacement vehicle. Having absolutely no trust in Dollar Rental at this point and being almost 2 hours off schedule, we decided to purchase roach spray and garbage bags at the local CVS. We bagged all of our belongings, sprayed the van’s interior before getting back into it and drove to the airport to speak with someone in person.

When we arrived at rental center, we demanded to speak to a manager or someone who had the capability of giving us all of our money back for this despicable rental experience! The manager told us that we couldn’t get 100% our money back as we had driven off the lot already and would now be charged 1 day's worth of fees, tolls, and gas. We had left the lot 2 hrs and much of this time being stranded due to this roach infestation. We had video evidence of the roaches in the van and showed it to her. She looked unfazed by it, almost like she knew the van had roaches and rented it anyway! She apologized, and said she would be doing the same thing we are doing right now to get our money back, but was still unable to give us all of our money back.

We insisted on speaking with someone higher, and threatened to call the corporate office because this was absolutely ridiculous!! One way or the other we were going to get 100% of our money back. A few minutes later she came back to us and now said she would give us ALL of the money back. Thankfully we did, and left to get another rental from different company. Dollar Rental will NOT get any of our business in the future. Their lack of concern, especially their lack of responsiveness on the 24 hr emergency roadside assistance phone line (or any of their phone numbers) showed us they are COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE and UNTRUSTWORTHY!! I hope this review would steer you clear of this company if you have any expectations of getting dependable service and a decent vehicle. STAY FAR AWAY!!

I was calling to inquire about under 25 rentals for my daughter. Online, it showed nothing down, no deposit but it also didn’t show me the age differential for a 22 year old, which is why I called customer service.

While talking about charges etc, with the representative, I asked the rep why a deposit was needed on the phone, as she had stated, but not online. She rudely snapped “did I ask for a credit card number”. I did call her sarcasm out. She seemed very unhappy with her position in every answer she gave, before and after me stating her sarcasm was heard loud and clear. I did ask several questions about deposits and amounts, etc, as they looked different than what I saw online, which I assumed was my right as a customer. She was extremely snappy and rude the entire time, even somewhat loud as my daughter was sitting beside me and could hear her with the phone to my ear.

I tried to call back but was left on hold x 10 min and decided to hang up. LOST a potential long term customer. I have used another service for about 10 YEARS and have rented upward of 75 + times. The only reason I attempted to use you was my in-laws used Dollar in Vegas last month, for the first time. They probably won’t use again, as the service was also quite lacking in customer appreciation but wanted to try to give my daughter a ‘cheaper’ route, hoping for the best. Cheaper is not better, obviously, and you get what you pay for. So, we will pay for good service and quality autos. Good luck keeping Dollar rentals alive with the horrible reports you will receive.

It appears that rentarcars.com made an error with our reservation, in that we ordered a mid-size vehicle, and it booked us a compact. I was very careful to book a midsize, in that last year we did this same trip and my wife was furious at me for booking a compact. I checked and double checked before making the reservation. We went out to the car anyway and it was clear that we would not be able to fit in the car that had been given to us.

I went back to the desk, and they said that we could upgrade from a compact to a mid-size for double the price because the rates on rentalcars.com were no longer available. At this point I asked to just have our reservation cancelled and said that we’d find a car somewhere else. I went to a different rental car counter to inquire about the availability of cars, and as I walked up, the phone range. I quickly realized that it was the sales rep from the Dollar counter, calling this other rental car company to tell them not to rent to us. I asked and confirmed that it was indeed that same women, calling other rental counters and essentially “blacklisting” us.

I’m not an unreasonable person. I never swore. I was definitely frustrated with this error, but I never treated her or her co-worker with disrespect. I said, in a calm voice, that “I think this is terrible, and no wonder there’s no customers in line here”. I think it is highly inappropriate that she would take the time to call other counters to try and prevent us from getting a rental car. Ultimately we took an Uber to our destination. I will never use Dollar rental car again.

My son was designated driver & they had me sign as driver also & was charged more without any explanation & my card was used since I bought the package. Then, I called and they said that they were sorry but I sign and nothing could be done. They seem to scam people.

I rented a car in Chicago recently at the O'Hare location. Besides having to wait in line (only about 3 people in front of us) for over 45 minutes, the woman who "helped" us was very rude and unhelpful. We asked her for the street address for returning the car and it was as if we had asked for a million dollars. She actually slammed her hand down on the counter and sighed heavily. This was not the worst of it, however.

Having lived in Chicago previously, I was familiar with the toll system. We declined the offer to have an I-Pass (automatic toll debiting system) hooked up to our credit card, knowing we would have to have change available if we encountered any tolls. Imagine our shock and outrage when after having gone through 2 tolls (where we got a green light before we paid, which was confusing to us, but we paid our cash anyway), one for $1.90 and one for $1.70, we noticed the metal box in the window that was slid open. When I closed it I saw in tiny writing on it, something like "be sure to close this if you have not opted to activate the I-Pass account on this rental car". We were NEVER TOLD to close this before we went through any tolls. We didn't even notice the small box for nearly 24 hours into our rental! It felt like this was done purposefully in order to be able to fine us for using something we hadn't "opted for".

Upon returning the car, I asked how I sort this out and was given a website to visit. I called the number of the website (the Illinois Tollway) and was told I needed to contact the rental company because the toll had been paid (twice in fact). I called the Dollar customer service number and encountered a worse woman than at the rental counter. As I tried to explain my predicament she actually interrupted and YELLED at me so loudly a person sitting 15 feet away heard her! She just kept yelling that I needed to contact the Illinois Tollway (whom I had already called).

I called back to Dollar's customer service and got a very helpful gentleman who said that I needed to go to Platepass.com. It was wonderful that he was so kind, but he didn't help my basic concern. I didn't want to be charged for tolls I had paid with cash, especially since I was never informed to CLOSE THE I-PASS UNIT or I would be penalized!!!! Today, I just received a bill for $36 for a total of $3.60 in tolls THAT I HAVE ALREADY PAID!!! I am frustrated and infuriated that this is apparently how Dollar works. I have contacted their customer service about this, but I'm not holding out hope that they will help me in any way. Needless to say, I will never rent from them again.
