I paid for fuel beforehand and was assured they would pay me back if I brought the tank full. I brought the tank full, they saw it, and they didn't pay back the fuel! Apparently I have to send a receipt of the gas station and the invoice to Hertz to be reimbursed, something no one told me about! In other rentals they have reimbursed me the moment they saw I had the tank full. What a scam! Still waiting to hear back from Hertz.

I rented a car from Phoenix Airport a few weeks ago - we had to change our flight to an earlier time. I reached out to change our reservation to ADD an additional day - and was told there would be a $50 fine for changing the reservation. Now I understand a fine for cancelling but for adding more days? I was told that they had to cancel the reservation to modify hence the fine. An absolutely absurd and very short-sighted policy. They can keep their $50 and I rented a car from another company. And I will post this negative experience every opportunity I get.

Avoid Dollar Rental at all costs. Paid ahead for car rental. After picking up the car at the airport, and rechecking later in the day, I found they added fees for unrequested extra insurance, extra unrequested road service, fees for some license check item(?), that they charged my card and double my payment. I tried to resolve over the phone and was told they would remove the unauthorized charges on car return. When I returned the car, they said, NOPE. Can’t help you. You have to call Customer Service. No resolve, no regard, horrible service, and almost impossible to even reach customer service. One star is too much.

Rented a car from Dollar at Salt Lake City Utah. They said it was manager's choice. Not concerned because there was only 2 of us. When we got there they said they had a 15 seat van for us. We told them we did not need that large. Well you have to pay 30.00 more if want anything else. We said will take the van then! Then they asked if we belonged to Costco and if we did they would only charge us a one time fee of 15.00 so we agreed. Went to turn car in and they charged us $30.00 extra per day. Refused everything we told them and they said they couldn’t do anything but pay it. We paid an additional $190.00 besides our original bill. Totally dishonest. Never rent from Dollar!!

One star is being way to generous. From reading other reviews about Dollar (which is associated with Hertz), my bad experience with this company was not unique. I reserved a car from Dollar through my credit card travel service, which ended up being detrimental in the long run because Dollar could not resolve any of the issues until after I returned the car. We flew into Phoenix and stood in a very long line at their car rental center for 2 hours, and felt like we were being held hostage because we had prepaid and had no other choice. At the time I did not know Hertz and Dollar were related, now I wonder why they didn't send some of us to the Hertz counter when the line was snaking out the door at the Dollar counter, there was NO line at the Hertz counter.
Once we got to the counter, there was no "sorry for your wait" or any type of conversation for that matter, almost like talking to a robot, but we got the paperwork we needed and we were sent down to the garage, WHERE THERE WERE NO CARS, ZERO CARS! Not one word about this situation at the counter upstairs, or during the additional hour wait in the garage. We waited in another line and witnessed multiple people being almost forced to take cars that were obviously not what they had reserved, a mother and son given a pick up truck, a couple given a huge SUV, a family with several pieces of luggage given a convertible with practically no trunk and trying to shove their luggage and themselves into it. Not a single employee offered any explanations, even when asked. After an hour, we experienced the same thing as had those ahead of us, what appeared to be a teenager pointed to a car and said "go to that one."
We too almost couldn't fit our luggage and ourselves into the vehicle. At that point we had no recourse, we were going to be late for a family event in Tucson and I certainly wasn't going back to stand in line another 3 hours to straighten it out. After leaving the garage, I noticed I had been charged 3 times what I should have owed, besides the prepaid amount. I was on the phone every day of my vacation battling with this company, my credit card company also called Dollar on my behalf and were told the extra charges were because I had received an upgrade. I finally drove to the Tucson airport to try and get things straightened out, the Dollar manager was much nicer, gave us a different vehicle, and agreed the charges I incurred were wrong, the car we had was the opposite of an upgrade.
Unfortunately his hands were tied and could not help with the money issues. The incorrect charges were eventually resolved, after more phone calls and more than a week after I returned from my trip, but I am more upset by the poor customer service treatment during the chaos at the Phoenix airport and inability to get questions answered truthfully. When I called after my trip to voice my complaints to someone who cared, I was once again disappointed by the robotic, or standard answer of "I'm very sorry for the inconvenience" I received. THEY DO NOT CARE. They wanted to give me a $70 voucher towards my next rental with them, I declined. I will never use them again and would recommend anyone reading these reviews to not do business with Dollar Car Rental either.

I rented a car from Dollar Rental in Orlando. The customer rep told me I needed to pay extra for a toll pass that made the vehicle exempt from all toll fees. He was telling this to each customer in line. I told the rep the area I would be travelling in Florida, assuming he was familiar with the state he would know if I would be travelling thru various toll locations. He assured me I would be & that paying $69.95 would be the least expensive way to go. Turned out the highways I travelled only had a few tolls. The total cost of them might have amounted to $15. Seems to me they are taking advantage of customers that don’t know the area by adding unnecessary extras to your contract. Difficult to develop trust with this company.

1 star is too much to rate this company. I had my parents coming from Brazil to visit me in Orlando with a pre-paid voucher with everything that they need. My Dad is 65yo and doesn't speak English and even though Brazil is a VERY IMPORTANT "customer" in Orlando-FL, DOLLAR didn't have anyone on duty to help him during the process so he called me.
I was VERY SPECIFIC with the attendant that NO EXTRA SERVICE or UPGRADE was needed and now after the rental period on the receipt we have a $357.99 extra charge for additional coverage and road assistance that was pushed to him on that day. I've tried to call customer service and had the UNPLEASANT service from SHAWNA saying that he should've read the contract. A contract that he can't read. DON'T RENT a CAR FROM DOLLAR/THRIFTY in Orlando, the employees are scammers and will act in BAD FAITH taking advantage of you and your family, especially if they're older and do not speak English and will just answer back that you should've read the contract even if they can't.

I reserved and purchased my car rental through Priceline and I paid for the car before I traveled. When I arrived in Orlando, I waited in line for almost 90 minutes to get the paperwork to get my vehicle. Went to the garage to retrieve the luxury vehicle I had reserved and the car was not available. They gave me a pickup truck and said I would need to come back in a couple of days and exchange it for the vehicle I had reserved. They ended up double billing me for fees and gas for two vehicles. I called Dollar rental and after being put on hold for 30 minutes they disconnected the call. Priceline was no help either, I would avoid both these businesses. I'm out $242.

Dollar looks to take advantage of and exploit disabled people. We came to the rental counter at MCO airport in Orlando Florida with my wife in a wheel chair. The Dollar employee said the car we had reserved would not have enough room for the wheelchair as well as our luggage so he offered us a free upgrade to a larger vehicle. He went to his supervisor and got the approval for the free upgrade. He even wrote the approval and the supervisor's name on the rental agreement envelope holding the rental agreement documents. We were promised no additional cost for the upgrade to fit my wife's wheelchair. Our credit card was then charged over $1200.
We have been working for a month to get this error on their part corrected. We have been given nothing but the run around and now we are told they cannot verify the conversation about the free upgrade. They are calling us liars even though we have sent them copies of the signed agreement with the free upgrade detailed. It appears to me that Dollar saw an opportunity to take advantage of a disabled customer and they did so. I would never suggest to anyone to rent from Dollar or their parent company Hertz.

NO, NEVER AGAIN! I have rented from Dollar before without a problem, but this current horrible experience wiped out all previous good experiences. I WILL NEVER GIVE THEM MY BUSINESS AGAIN. Similar to United Airlines, being a loyal customer gets you nothing, they don't return the loyalty. Turns out, when you book through Booking.com (Rentalcars.com) or other third-party booking companies, they wash their hands of any problems and turn you over to the booking company...only after wasting hours and days of your time (if you can finally get ahold of anyone, which is extremely difficult and frustrating) collecting details again and again via different agents who don't really care.
They act like they want to help, but it is just lip service, there is nobody home who cares, it's abundantly obvious. They know right up front from your rental record #/booking # that you booked through a third party, but they still waste your time and don't tell you you're on your own until after extensive runaround trying to wear you out.
In this case, the car they provided (the only one available, the counter agent told me) was a tin can, poor ergonomics and very uncomfortable and I'd be driving it some distance every day for a week. Before even getting in the car, I knew the model was low quality, and asked the agent for anything else, but was refused unless I wanted to pay more than the high price I was already paying for a compact; instead he kept telling me it was brand new, as if a brand new tin can was better than a tin can with miles on it.
After driving the car a couple times the first day, I decided to try to exchange it. Rather than waste the time of going back to the airport and waiting in line only to potentially be told again that there were no other compact cars, I called the number the counter agent had given me to reach them directly. I called numerous times over two days but no one ever answered. I gave up and kept driving the tin can.
When I returned the car, I quickly told the different counter agent what happened. As at pick-up, there was only one agent handling everything. She was helping other customers and profusely apologized and told me she'd give me a partial credit if I could wait in line with the other customers picking up cars. I couldn't wait as I had a flight to catch. She told me Dollar management would honor what she told me and give me a credit. She wrote her name on my contract so I could quote her.
So, that's where the real nightmare began, trying to get Dollar customer service to do their job. I spent days trying to reach them, via Dollar experience survey, Booking.com feedback, calling the number the second counter agent gave me, providing feedback and requesting a call on the Dollar website. Days passed before hearing anything. No one called me back after requesting a call back from their phone system and I hung up after an hour wait another time when I wasn't given the callback option.
What finally got their attention was posting on their FB page and sending a DM. Multiple people responded over the course of a day asking for the same details over and over (clearly not reading the thread) and not doing anything. Eventually, I got an email response to my contact request on their website and a FB message that said they do not give credits and would issue a $50 certificate for use on a future rental. Of course, their rates for tin cans are exorbitant so they can afford to offer a future discount (maybe you won't use it if they're lucky - scamming 101 - and, a future discount is better for the bottom line than losing current revenue), and they want to keep you as a customer, so they hook you into future business, same tactic as United uses.
I refused and told them I'd rather never do business with them again, tell friends and family about my experience, and give my business to a reputable company that cares about its customers and their satisfactory experiences. They refused to honor what their counter agent offered to do in person and had assured me their customer service personnel would do later. They also said they spoke to someone at the airport location and whoever they spoke to (they wouldn't tell me the name) repeated the same ** the pick-up agent had told me and not what the drop-off agent had told me, so clearly they didn't go to the source of the promise to me. You can NOT trust Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz (all Hertz owned) and you can do MUCH better at other companies. If you're hesitant, read the other reviews here and on the Dollar FB page! Next up, filing a BBB complaint.

As a (previously) loyal Dollar Express customer for nearly 20 years, I had been used to receiving better treatment. It started in December when I made the reservation (at prices about double what we're used to here), I wanted to use some of my points to offset the cost. After a long wait I got an ESL representative who after a long time found that the codes he needed to enter were going to change after Jan 1, and he couldn't do it. He told me to call after Jan 1 so I marked my calendar and followed through. Again after a sizeable wait and getting a novice, poor English-speaker, I was told 500 points were redeemed to lower my total by approximately $95.
At John Wayne Airport, THERE IS NO LONGER A DOLLAR EXPRESS service here. To top it off, you must wait in a line with Hertz and Thrifty renters in the carbon monoxide-filled garage with no seating available. On a Friday at 1:42 we entered the line. We started speaking to one of the only two agents available (out of only 3 stations) at 2:56!!!
As you may have guessed my rental amount did not reflect the use of rewards points. The agent could do NOTHING about it at the counter, and I was told to call the 800# to get help. I called before returning the vehicle, always waiting through the voice prompts, and was told there was nothing he could do until the vehicle was returned and paid for. You sensing a theme of non-responsibility?
Today, I called the Dollar "business office", got another non-English speaker and was told that as long as the rewards points were not correctly applied in the beginning, there was NOTHING they could do. I asked "isn't there some way to credit my credit card for the difference without using points?", he again repeated there was NOTHING they could do. You can rest assured that this long-time loyal customer will be using a different company from here on out.

Buyer beware! Be very, very aware! The sales people at Dollar Rent A Car will LIE to you to get you to pay much more than you should be paying. (And if you make your rental via AAA, they are no help in getting things resolved. I spent time and effort putting my information together, only to have them tell me that there wasn’t anything that they could do to help.) I hope my story helps someone in the future with any car rental company.
First, check with your insurance AND your credit card benefits to see if you will be covered and be able to decline the overpriced Loss Damage Waiver. Second, either bring your E-ZPass or other device and add the car rental plate to your account if you will be going through a lot of tolls or just stop and pay cash and keep your receipts. Otherwise, they will talk you into getting their plan at $10.99 per day, for each day that you rented the car, not the number of times you go through the tolls. (I had my car for 6 days and only went through tolls 2 of those days.) And if you opt not to have this, they will tell you scary stories about hundreds of dollars in charges and fines that you will be charged later.
I called the Turnpike Authority, and they told me that they don't charge fines, they just charge the license plate. If you don’t pay your tolls yourself, they will charge you a $9.99 administrative fee per toll, up to a maximum of 9 administrative fees, per your agreement with them. So, do yourself a favor and really do some research on the add-ons and know what to expect before you get to the counter. And make sure you can see your charges before you sign!

HNL Airport Dollar car rental fails to disclose that a rental car reservation does not lock in a rental car for the requested pick-up time. The manager's special where low-rate economy class cars are advertised without informing customers the car availability is on a first come first serve basis. The current reservation process issues a car rental confirmation for cars they do not have or do not track resulting in 1-2 hours of waiting. This wait time is in addition to the 1-1/2 hour wait at the rental desk where a staff of two assist customers that numbers in the 20-30s in line. A tactic of short staffing the front desk to slow down the line at the rental car pick up. It's like a bait and switch tactic to offer low rental rates with a confirmation number for the selected pick-up time then informing the customer there is no cars available and to wait for one. Dollar has an inadequate system, poor leadership and predatory practices.

I've had a bad experience with Dollar, but believed it was a local feature. It is not. At Baltimore BWI airport, I booked a rental car with Dollar in advance and had to pick up the car at 9pm in the evening. When I came to the desk it turned out that all cars are sold out! And the rep offered me a choice of a) waiting for availability and b) going to hell. Isn't that nice, especially when the night is coming over? Waiting wasn't looking like a compelling option given the long line of people waiting at the counter. The customer is the very last thing they care about in this company. The situation was the same in Thrifty and in fact it was one guy running both of them at that time. Lost big money and time, never see them again.

In July we reserved a mini van for our vacation on the Big Island in December. Showed up to pick up our van, and noticed about 30 people sitting outside Dollar, and not looking happy. Went inside, waited in a long line and when I got to the clerk I was told 'we have no cars'. They had ZERO cars - and they never bothered to contact customers. After asking for a manager, etc - I told the clerk to call all rental companies in the area and find me a van. The unwilling clerk finally obliged. We were able to get a vehicle with Avis but it cost an additional $1,000. Dollar knew they had no cars, knew they could not provide cars to incoming passengers and chose to do nothing about it. Very screwed up. Hopefully Chapter 11 will lead to this company going out of business! Just very crappy of them.

I called Discover Cars.com (for over 2 hours) and they told me that they could not help and basically I was on my own. They said that I could book another car (even tho I already paid for a car) and I could file a claim and hope for the best. They told me they have no other cars and no other solution, however on their website, cars are available to be rented. "We cannot help you." I also called Dollar Car Rental and they basically have no customer service, all they can do is assist in new bookings. "You have to call the location sir. We cannot call them." So I call the location (Dollar Fort Lauderdale Airport) and they do not answer the phone, ever. It's been hours I am trying to reach them.
Meanwhile, I am in a foreign country with my wife and child. Awful experience overall. This is completely unacceptable: To be a car rental company and to not honour and have a car ready. We were taken advantage of (me and my wife) by an employee at “Dollar Rent A Car”. She sold us insurance products that we didn’t know we are buying. Sneaky way. She used Jargons that we don’t understand and took our money without even knowing. We rented a car on Expedia and the car was with Dollar rent a car. It was promoted at $27 a day and We paid for the collision coverage (insurance) so the total with everything was about $107. Then we took our flight from DFW to Charlotte (CLT) and went to the counter. She didn’t get the reservation number and started asking which car we want so we told her whatever is on the reservation.
She started asking about insurance coverage and we told her we already bought it and paid for - Expedia room about $78 from my wife’s card and told us we will pay about $27 at the rental car desk. So when the employee took our card we thought that’s what she will charge - she started explaining the coverage of insurance and we thought she is explaining what we already bought - she then asked me to sign in the credit card machine so I signed (didn’t see any policy or options on their just a blank signature space like we usually do on credit card processing machines).
Then they charged my card about $152 in addition to the $78 they charged my wife’s card - $230 for a 1 day rental for a basic car - I did agree to buy gas at $2.91 per gallon and I did mention we will use less than a gallon since we will only drive from airport to hotel and back (30 minute drive). The employee confirmed it will be only $2.91.
I need my money back - I paid Expedia $78 and was told will only pay $28 additional or so. I need my $125 back - I need justice. Our had been taken and our credit card dispute department said if you paid in person we won’t be able to dispute against the company. All the things that were on the floor in the back seat were soaked and 2 purses on the floor in the front seat were soaked. I called the 1-800 number for the company and it ended up being someone in the U.S. He took my info, gave me a Case # then proceeded to tell me there was nothing they could do, they had no way of getting another car to me. He said if I could get by with the car I would receive a credit on the final bill on my credit card.
2 months later and about 15 phone calls to them trying to get a credit, I have received a $100 voucher for the next time I rent a car from them. The Dollar Rent A Car at SFO (San Francisco) will charge you a $15 administrative fee for each toll you go through (up to $90), but the customer service person failed to mention this aspect, although they said to drive on through the toll roads without stopping and that the bill will come in the mail. For two tolls, I ended up paying $44 ($30 over the $14 toll fees). This is a exorbitant hidden fee, which should generate them a lot of money.
I initially booked a compact SUV (a Buick Encore), which wasn’t available. The line was way too long, so the customer service person said either it’s better to rent a Nissan Versa (which is a subcompact car and not a compact SUV, like the Nissan Rogue) or upgrade to a Toyota Camry, which cost about another $250. Since they had me in a tough situation with the long wait, I ended up paying much more for a sedan. I feel as though these extra costs are designed in their business model, so beware. Just a "we have no cars and it's not my fault". After going around in circles for ages, we learned from the staff on the lot that there was one 12 passenger shuttle van available. Not what we wanted, but we had no choice.
They informed us the fuel package was 'same price' as fill the tank option. This was a straight out lie. This is only if you use the full tank. We could never use a full tank of a van that size and returned it with half a tank of gas left. They insisted that because I signed a contract they would not reimburse me for the half tank of gas. They have unapologetic, unhelpful staff and were quite happy stranding dozens of people at the airport. So it was my turn, I could barely understand the guy as he went through everything so fast. I told him, "I'm just going from A to B and want to rent a car. Not interested in everything else." I got my agreement and went to get my car.
When I got back from Chicago to my home state, I looked at my credit card statement and saw I had the online charge and then another charge. I called customer service and it was the worse experience I ever had. I could barely understand the woman and at the same time, there were people in the background shouting between themselves and it never stopped. She told me I agreed to all this extra stuff they put on my car, a toll thing, close to $150 worth of insurance, etc. I told her NO WAY would I do that. I was beyond ticked off. I will NEVER rent from these people again and in fact, if this is how all rental agencies are these days, I'll drive the next time.

As we arrived at the check-out site where we do all the dealing of paperwork before picking up our rental car, right away we noticed the lengthy wait as well as the line that was forming behind us. We approached the representative who called us to assist us with our reservation. As we confirmed our reservation with the representative, I can still remember the number of questions she had asked regarding any additional services we may have wanted to add. The first question she asked; would you like to add a toll coverage to your reservation? She further explained why (I state: in her opinion) she thought we should have added it, then she proceeded by asking us, if we would like to pre-pay for gasoline. My husband agreed to proceed with the process, and I had several exchanges with him because I had disagreed.
This is beside the point (the disagreement) - Through the entire process (from moment we were called to check-out for our rental to the time we got our vehicle) I expected it to all be completed in a timely manner. Here is where it gets real: we decided to split the payments between two cards (a credit card/debit card from two separate entities) to pay for the car deposit, (Dollar Car Rental claimed they needed to collect) and the fees for the insurance we added to the rental. What a mistake that was not knowing what the outcome was going to be.
I spent a couple of days dealing with both the bank & merchant on the phone and getting nowhere. I had even opened a dispute per the recommendation of the bank representative. The days I spent wasting my breath and time; was consistently a back & forth engagement between the bank representative, the few Dollar Rental agents that we dealt with and, I, and still no resolution. The bank representative claimed that the "fall off" documentation hadn't been received by them. They are waiting on the merchant to release the funds.
Meanwhile (let me remind you that on two different days (I was on the phone on a three-way call with both bank and the agents from Dollar - who happens to be the merchant that I am making the complaint against). They are still holding my funds but yet again I am not sure if it is they who are at fault here. Nowadays you really do not know who to trust because somewhere along the lines someone is not doing their job to the best of their ability, and furthermore, I may be at a total loss here for the stupid decision I had made of splitting all rental costs between two cards. I WOULD ADVISE YOU - NEVER RENT THROUGH THIS MERCHANT. Last note: do not forget you were warned beforehand. It is not worth trying to save a few bucks to be completely dissatisfied.

Upon arrival after two flights, and little sleep the prior night, we arrive to check-in with 12 customers in front of us and 18 more behind us only to discover 3 customer service agents attending to 2 car rental agencies during peak hours. My reservation in-hand was arranged months prior, yet the agent quickly offered upgrades implying that it is less expensive to the reservation showing a picture of a subcompact similar to a smart car. Insurance was automatically added and refueling by Dollar was described as the same price as at the regular pump.
The conversation with a jet-lagged customer was exacerbated by a language barrier with an agent using English as a second language. Upon reflection, I felt this behavior to be opportunistic, if not predatory, to a travel-weary customer with many "patient" customers waiting behind, escalating an anticipated fee of $270 to $770 for a 4 day rental. Congratulations to your agent and your agency for an impressive demonstration of greed. I neither expect or anticipate a response or explanation for my experience, nor do I expect someone to "do the right thing." I honestly have no interest in any further interaction with Dollar.

A friend who rented in LA had a terrible experience with this company, being aggressively upsold on newfound fees which he declined, yet they would let give him the rental till he was forced to accept those new charges. After hearing his experience, I checked the reviews of that company and saw that those strong-armed tactics were standard operating procedure. I cancelled my reservation with them and booked with Dollar through AAA. We picked up our rental in Phoenix. The representative was pleasant and not pushy with the upsells. The quoted price was charged, and we were allowed to choose our car from the lot. The car was clean and decent. After reading all those horror stories of the other company, our experience with Dollar was wonderfully smooth.

I then asked for a possible complimentary upgrade or possible military discount both of which were refused. When I was told the car was ready the agent refused to accompany me to the car to explain the features but more importantly the condition of the vehicle. I soon understood why as the "car" was in fact a clunker with more that 50,250 miles exhaustive dings on both sides and the rear and the interior had stains on both the front passenger seat as well on the back seats. Unfortunately I was pressed for time and could not change my plans to return the vehicle.
When I returned the vehicle once again there was no agent to inspect the vehicle. When I returned home I was asked to complete a survey at the end of which I was assured that someone would contact me within 48 hours. It goes without saying that I documented these shortcomings with photographs. It has been more than a week without any contact furthermore impossible to reach them on their web site. The car appeared to be inm working order. However on day two, the sun came out and the temperature outside got warm. That's when I discovered the air conditioner in the car didn't work. For the next three days, I drove around in a car with no air conditioner.
I called Dollar multiple times to complain and ask for a partial refund. No response. I emailed them. No response. They sent me a survey to which I included details about the problem. No response. First, I own up to my own negligence. I was negligent in not doing my due diligence and bringing up the minor flaws that I was assured were passed and okay to go. That said, inspecting in a dark garage with the streets of travel and time issues does impede full knowledge of potential issues. Dollar rented a car, passed a car with a bulge in the passenger front tire. It was marked with green marker and hard to see in the dark. This, along with a minor door ding they assured me was okay cost me 270.00 on the return of the vehicle. The ding, again is my due diligence, I'll own it. The bulge could be a safety issue and the complete and utter disregard for safety is appalling.
Upon return the young man ran around and noted both and had me fill out a damage form. How convenient, they knew about the issues when I returned it. The exact spot and the bulge. Surprised they didn't charge me for the scrape on the driver side bumper. Also assured that flaw was okay. Dollar is the most deceptive, horrible rental service I've used in 30 + years.

I rented online for a total charge of 106$. The guy at the counter was a total jerk, snarky and disrespectful. I landed late in the evening and after waiting thirty minutes in line at Ft Lauderdale airport, just wanted to get the car and get out of there. The guy tried to talk me into a toll pass, car seat for an infant although I was traveling alone, he tried three times to get me into a more expensive vehicle, it was exhausting and I finally raised my voice and said “I just want what I paid for when I made the reservation and NOTHING ELSE”. Finally walked out of there and drove to my destination only to discover he charged me for a “damage waiver“ of 203$$ despite my having told him specifically I had my own rental insurance. They also charged a 200$ fee for a hold on, my credit card.
When I called the next day about the damage waiver they said they could do nothing because my rental period had already started. When I went back to the airport rental counter the agent told me the same thing. When I insisted he call a manager he said one wasn’t available. When I insisted he telephone a supervisor, he picked up his cell and allegedly called someone (I doubt there was anyone on the other end of the call) and that person allegedly said they couldn’t reverse the charges. This company is awful, they are dishonest and do a bait and switch when people are vulnerable. I would never ever rent from them again a and recommend no one else does. For people who love reading dramatic reviews, this one’s for you… While in Florida, one of the tires in an *expensive* car I rented from Dollar/Thrifty popped. While driving! In the middle of the highway! I managed to safely pull over to the side of the road, and then called the Dollar help line. The woman asked us to check for a spare tire (there was none) and even SHE made a comment sort of like “Dang, y’all are on the side of the highway with no spare tire?” Like?? Ma’am?? If you’re stressing, imagine how I’M feeling!
The woman then went on to explain that a tow truck would be on the way, and once the tow truck was en route back to the facility with the car, then and only then would a taxi/Lyft be sent our way. Sus, but okay. However, after the tow truck came and left, we waited and waited and no lyft came. So, we called in to check the status, and another Dollar employee (a different person, a man) told us that no one had been sent our way, but HE would send someone. He asked to confirm our location (we told him we hadn’t gone anywhere) and told us a Lyft would be otw soon.
About half an hour later, I get a call from the Lyft driver asking where we are. He asked if we were near a Target or Walmart or anything, and I had to explain to him that we were near NOTHING. We were like 10 miles from the nearest gas station. The lyft guy said he’d apparently been sent the wrong address because he was nowhere near us, then cancelled the ride.
Mind you, the car broke down around 12. At this point, it’s like 3pm. My friends and I had been baking in the sun without water for like 3 hours now, so I tried to call my own Lyft (with my 10% remaining battery) and figured maybe Dollar would reimburse me. I sent the Lyft to the closest landmark, the gas station, miles behind us. However, when this driver called (asking if we were nearby), I explained the situation and he basically said that if he couldn’t put an exact address into his GPS, he couldn’t pick us up. And so, he also cancelled the ride.
This is at hour 4 outside in the sun, so I called a friend and begged her to come pick us up. She was at work and an hour away, but she left early and came to get us anyway because she could undoubtedly hear the hysteria in my voice. We’re lucky a kind passerby stopped to offer us some water bottles to hold us over until our friend came and got us. Then, she drove us to the airport so we could rent a new car.
We got to the MCO airport around 6:30pm. What really baffles me about this whole situation is that the employees weren’t even EXPECTING us. Dollar managed to get a tow truck to our exact location and took their car away lickety-split, but then when it came to actually ensuring their customers weren’t abandoned/murdered on the side of the highway, they really dropped the ball. I understand they have no control over Lyft, but surely SOMEONE could have driven out to get us? Or called the police to come get us?
People often rent cars when on vacation, right? Is it crazy to expect that the rent-a-car agency would ensure I was safe somewhere, considering I’m in a state where I could potentially have no one to rely on? I fortunately had a friend near-ish (an hour away) who dropped everything to come chauffer me to the airport, but what if I hadn’t? My safety was in Dollar’s hands, and they didn’t give a crap about anything but their car.
No, I didn’t get any reimbursement for anything. Not for the gas my friend wasted driving us around (imagine if I’d actually ordered a Lyft), not for the entire day of vacation wasted, nothing. I called customer service and they said to speak to someone in-person at the airport, but when I did that, the manager at the airport told me to call customer service. I left a review on Dollar’s website in the complaint section, and I just got an email back from Thrifty saying they’d give the manager in MCO my comments.
Of course I’m hoping this doesn’t happen to anyone else, but vacations are *expensive* and I lost an entire day of mine. Renting a hotel for a single night is like $100 alone, and then there’s the fact that I wasn’t driving just to waste gas, but because I had reservations and tickets booked! All wasted! Everyone I tell this story to seems horrified about the terrible customer service, except anyone working at Thrifty/Dollar themselves. My friends and I are 22—NO ONE deserves to get abandoned on the side of the road, frying in the hot sun for hours on end, but especially not inexperienced kids on their very first vacation away from home. This whole ordeal was absolutely terrible.

In February we rented and received a confirmation number for a vehicle at the Atlanta Airport from April 4, 3:00 pm until 9am April 6 for $205 from Dollar Car rental. Upon arriving in Atlanta we were told, by Martina, the rental agent, there were no cars available for us either there or in the entire airport. However she told us there were probably a few still available at the Advantage Rental Agency, a counter away. (There was even a sign out that they still had cars). Parent company to both these agencies is Hertz. The Advantage agent told us the cost would be $1000 plus fees for a total of $1367. Being 700 miles from home and an hour away from our hotel we were forced to proceed with the transaction. Meanwhile, while we were preparing to sign the contract, Martina from Dollar came to the counter and told the agent servicing us that she had a couple more cars available and was ready to send them over to her.
At that time my husband did not think to show her our agreement with Dollar and to tell her we would take the car, since she sent us to this company. We feel we were being scammed and they were just using this as a ploy to get more money for the cars. (Actually 7x the original contract amount). We received a survey from Advantage, at which time we stated this experience, and their only response was to send back the copy of the signed contract. After reading many of the reviews for both these companies, we are convinced they are substandard rental companies, and do not value their customers or the service they provide. We will be referring this matter to the parent company Hertz. My experience with Dollar Car Rental (Dollar Rent a Car) at Daytona Beach was absolutely terrible. The lines were incredibly long, they only had one or two staff members, they lied to my face, they indicated false information on my rental documentation and they broke my rental contract. Please do yourself a favor and pay a little bit more to rent somewhere else.
I rented twice through them on my trip. The lines were so long that it took 45 minutes to pick my first rental and over 1.5 hours the to pickup my second rental. My second rental wasn't ready when I got to the counter so I waited another 1.5 hrs until I could leave. When I or others complained to the manager, she dismissed our frustration by stating that "I've been here for 4 hours". The manager also lied to my face about staff calling off being the reason, which I knew was untrue because another rental employee at the airport told me they only ever have 1-2 Employees working. My rental car drop off time was never updated to accommodate the 1.5 hours of time that was missing from me waiting at the counter for my vehicle to be ready.
The paperwork that was provided indicated a full tank; this was not the case, so I took a photo of the fuel level. I contacted Dollar Car Rental support over the phone and they stated they would document the issue. When I returned the vehicle, the fuel discrepancy was not documented. I told the manager about the issue and offered to show photographic proof but was told it was not needed and they would adjust the paperwork. While waiting at the airport for my flight, I got an email update that indicated that they attempted to charge me for the fuel despite the fact that I made the manager aware and even left the car with 9/10 fuel level. I went back to the counter and the paperwork was updated and the charge was removed.
They also put the incorrect mileage on my rental paperwork; I notified them of this and they didn't update the information, despite my request even after showing them photographic proof. I contacted Dollar Car Rental via email and they simply responded that the charges on my account were correct; they failed to address my concerns around the missing rental time, falsified paperwork and poor customer service from their local associates and phone associates. If you want to deal with snide managers, long wait times, erroneous paperwork, poor customer service and support, falsified charges and incompetent support staff, rent from Dollar Car Rental - otherwise, I'd recommend going somewhere else... I know I will Dollar at all costs in the future.

When we recently rented a car from Dollar, they charged us $58.20 without our knowledge for fuel. When we returned the car full of fuel they stated they wouldn't refund the initial charge and that the only thing I could do is call the customer service line. Of course no one answers that line and you are sent in a circle of automated questions.
In that process I heard that if you have filled your tank before return and had the fuel purchase option, they are sorry but they will not refund your money. Also when we picked up the car it had a tire with a slow leak, we aired up the tire multiple times and when we got to Pensacola we returned the car for exchange because it only had a temporary spare tire and we had several hundred miles to go. They charged us $34.98 for the tire that was leaking when we picked it up. Never ever rent from Dollar/Hertz. They are thieves.

I rented a car to travel cross-country with Dollar for summer 2021. They were by far the most affordable car rental place for point to point. Dollar offers a package where you can pay $15 a day to have them cover all tolls. Given only one day of my trip would go through tolls I figured I'd pay cash at the toll booths. However, the toll booths were not staffed and required EZ Pass. Since we didn't have EZ Pass, we attempted to pay online but Dollar has blocked that ability. Post the car rental, I incurred $10.44 of toll charges which I tried to pay myself online. For every single toll pass, Dollar charged me a $15 "administration fee" which is a total rip off. My total bill ended up being over $100 with 6X admin fees. This is not at all in the consumer's best interest and I would highly recommend paying more at a car rental company that isn't Dollar and actually cares about customers.

When I clicked to finalize and prepay the total did not appear on the screen however I received an email saying my charges now totalled $91.08. I happened to check my card activity the morning I arrived (11/6) at the and saw a charge for $149.20 from Hertz. I did ask the clerk and the manager on duty why the amount was almost $60 higher than the amount on my confirmation email. The manager gave me a number to call that could only be reached Monday through Friday.
I gave it a couple of days and by Wednesday 11/10 I call the number I was given since there was no funds returned to my card. The agent that answered was rude and said I prepaid this amount so there was nothing he could or would do. I've since filed complaints with the Michigan and Florida Attorneys General. I've filed a complaint with the BBB and I encourage all to see Dollar's response as well as view the documents I uploaded. Then he called next customer immediately when I was still standing in front of him. It was weird because my reservation total already included taxes and facility fees. I pulled up my reservation sheet to show him the difference. He seemed very bothered to tell me that he didn't charge anything more. Later, I found out that he added one hour prorated charge upon the total because I picked up my car 40 minutes earlier than the reservation time. Firstly, I would like to say if the nature of my inquiry gave a selection for: "inadequate, incompetent and terribly rude/deceitful behaviour" I would have selected that as my selection for the counter staff at Toronto Pearson Airport Dollar Rent a Car. Secondly, I rarely write reviews or write letters for complaints. As a medical physician/professional and a father of 2, I just don't have the time unless it serves a higher purpose or to prove a point.
I made a booking for a Dodge Ram nearly 2 months ago at the YYZ airport for 1 day from Jan 3-4/2022. When I arrived, I was greeted nicely by a Caucasian lady who asked me for 2 pieces of I.D. and a credit card. After that, things went completely sour. After providing the necessary documents, she asked me, "what kind of vehicle was I renting", having already the computer screen in front of her with all the information. I said, "a pick-up truck". She said, "why do I need a pick-up truck". I found that very bizarre as it's not of her business but I replied "to move some items". She then said "we do not have pick-up trucks at this location", which I replied with, "that's fine but I reserved one and I should be honored one".
An Asian gentleman then joined in the conversation as things started getting a little feisty in my conversation that went in circles with the Caucasian lady who was adamant that I made a mistake in my booking. The Asian gentleman asked me for a copy of my reservation which I provided immediately on my phone and he then said, "I do not have any reservation for you sorry." Almost gesturing me to go away and get lost. The lady kept asking me if I wanted a manager to speak to throughout and I finally obliged as I had enough of these counter idiots that either were lying to me or are so incompetent or both that your company should really look into if they are providing proper service to your organization.
After speaking to the location manager, Pawenjit **, and waiting 3 hours for my vehicle, he finally came through with my vehicle. He was quite nice in the whole process and explained that there was a glitch in the system and he apologized unlike the front desk people. If they just admitted the truth and did not belittle or ridicule me as a fool and not put the blame on me for this problem I wouldn't have been so upset and more understanding as long as the problem was resolved. Pawen was nice, understanding and cared about me and the situation and offered free gas as compensation.
I want nothing more from Dollar as I'm writing this letter. I hope you make some changes to assure that no one suffers the silliness of the occurrences of what transpired today at the Pearson Toronto Airport to me. I hated the whole experience and I will likely never ever come back or deal with Dollar in my life and I will let everyone I can around me know about the whole ordeal.
My brother works for CBC news and I did threaten the front desk people if they don't take me seriously, I will report this to the news media when I told them I felt this is a scam. That is, 1) not being honored or even acknowledged of my rental even after presenting 2 id's, 1 cc, and full print out of booking AND 2) accused of being a liar saying it is impossible to make such a reservation even though I was able to do so. If nothing comes of this, I don't really care, your company will suffer eventually and you will fail. Do as you please. I promised I will respond and I have done so. I want nothing more. Ps: You might take advantage of some others and get away with it, but you will never with people like-minded as me. I fight for truth and injustice and I always will. If Pawenjit did not step in and fix the issue I would have made sure to publicly shame your company

At first I was told no change could be made without charging me more $. Trying to get that changed was ridiculously difficult and time consuming.
Upon arriving at my destination airport to get the car, I ended up waiting in line for 4 hours! Four hours beyond my pick up time. Communication about what was happening was terrible and many people dropped out of line, which was more than 80 deep and barely moved. Had I not prepaid through a third party I would also have left. As it turns out, after all was said and done, perhaps I should have.
I was quoted as to paying taxes and fees upon return which I knew was a quote, but the final cost was more than double the quote. I was charged for service (collision) that I did not request, and there were several more fees that were not clearly explained. Shocked that this might happen after waiting 4 HOURS in line. Communication was terrible. Trying to resolve issues was fruitless. There was no effort to refund any part of this and I ended up paying more for the "taxes, fees and other" than I paid for the base price of the car. It was more than double the quote. I wish I had read some reviews or done some investigating ahead of time as it looks as though this company has many dissatisfied customers. I will never use this company again!!! Horrible customer service! Not sure how they stay in business. Rented a car at Charlotte airport, at an exorbitant price, and headed to counter. Two 70 somethings, one using a walker, the other pulling two suitcases and assorted carry-ons. Followed signs to Dollar - different level. Trekked down the long hall and surprise! Terminal closed. Sign on door said go to Hertz - yup back the way we came.
Drove from Charlotte across I-77 to Virginia to see relatives. Toll road in Statesville area. No problem I thought. Toll reader on windshield so any minor tolls would be added to our rental, right? NOT! This customer gouging outfit actually charged $45 "Administration Fee" for $3 in tolls. Obviously they have no concern about Customer Service or future business. In Florida we have similar toll devices - actual tolls charged, not ridiculous bogus Admin fees! As if a $1,000 week rental weren't bad enough, they add insult to injury. Stay far away from Dollar. They must be financially wrought to be so greedy as to add these fees.

Don't use them. Scammers! I rented a car from Dollar way in advance and paid in advance, except for extra charges that I would have to pay for on the day I picked up car. I rented car for Saturday pickup at 1:00pm. I arrived around 1pm and waited in line until 5:30pm. I was sent out to get my car, and waited for 1 hour before I got it. I left the parking lot at 6:30pm. I returned the car early morning at approx 9:30am on the day I was supposed to dropoff, and they charged me a 2 hour late in fee.
I called the billing department to tell them that I was early in dropping off the car and I should not be charged for the 2 hours late in, when I waited to get my car over six hours late on the first day, which made me miss my conference meeting on that day. They said they don't give partial refunds, so in order to get my money back on my card, I would have to pay them the entire car rental fee first. Which was over $600. I did not want to pay that again. I even asked about a voucher, since I travel often and rent cars all the time, and they said, "No, we don't give out vouchers." Such a scam and RIP off. I will never use them again.

So I didn't stress about it took a picture and enjoyed my trip. I used Google maps to direct me back. But it took me to the wrong location. Then I didn't know I had to return the car to Hertz so I drove around looking for dollar's return area. I rented the car at 10:46 and returned it at 11:19. I was charged an extra day! Even though Google maps and poorly marked drop off locations were the reason. Now they are contacting me about the windshield!

We reserved a small car for a weekend business trip in Phoenix, AZ. It was a long hot shuttle ride to the car rental building, and the experience was about to get much worse. We walked in only to find that Dollar was closed down with a sign pointing us to Thrifty -- where the line was very long. After waiting 40 minutes to speak with an agent at the counter, he told us that our car "wasn't there yet". We were told to wait until we received a phone call from them -- likely 10-15 minutes, but could be 30 minutes.
When I walked back up to the counter at the 40 minute mark, he told me the car still wasn't there yet, but it would be coming soon. When I asked if they had any cars to rent -- "Yes or No" -- he was evasive and dismissive. Totally unprofessional! We decided to change plans and Uber it to our hotel instead. As we were checking into the hotel we got a call from Thrifty telling us that our car was now available to rent. I told them to stick it...

I was denied my car rental on the basis that I didn't have a return flight. The rental itself was $875 and I needed to give a $500 deposit which I was able to do, but the manager stated that the telephone customer service is outsourced to another company and the agents are poorly trained. She stated that a policy change had occurred in April and they no longer offer one-way rentals from DFW airport. A one-way car rental reservation can still be booked online with the company but they have not announced publicly that they don't honor these reservations. I incurred significant expense for hotel and return airfare.

She also tried to charge me for insurance without my knowledge, and I asked her why did the price change, and I told her to take the company's insurance off of my bill and that I will be using my personal insurance.
I drove through the cash lane to pay, but no one was there. I received 3 bills in the mail. The tolls were 1.75, 2.75, and 4.50 which is not a problem. The "ADMINISTRATIVE FEE" is the problem. I just received the bill today which is July 10. I did not neglect to pay for the tolls. Why an administrative fee? The administrative fees are 16.75, 32.75, and 49.50. Please do yourself a favor. After discussing my options, they agree to give me the car with my business debit card but I had to buy additional insurance from them. No instructions on how to get to the rental company from the airport besides asking one of the employee at the airport. Waited over an hour in line to pick up the rental. They only had two people working at the time. I told them I had a reservation through Priceline for the vehicle and I already pre-paid for it, they charged me an additional $421 on top of the 300 I had already paid online, and I was upfront that I didn’t want any additional services such as insurance and that I would fuel the vehicle up before I brought it back. Went to drop the vehicle off. Waited over an hour again in the line to try to resolve the extra charge before I left and the representative told me it was for damages.
I explain to her several times that there were no damages to the vehicle. She then explained that it was for deposit multiple times as well. I told her that it was already pre-paid for and asked why I was being charged again and she went on to explain that I was going to be charged another $193.96. I look at my statement today and it shows an additional charge for the third time for an additional $72. Tried contacting both Priceline and the Dollar rental car company to get this resolved and it is still not resolved almost a week later. Also the lady that was in front of me when I dropped off was completely ignored by the customer service representative. She walks up to the window to get helped because she assumed she was next just as I assumed she was next.
He did not say anything to her. Walked off to the back room for a few minutes. Came back. Continue to ignore her again. In my eyes that is not good customer service. If you are Busy with other things you should at least acknowledge the customers in front of you and at least say, "Hey I will be with you in just a few moments. Thank you for your patience." But nothing was said by anybody coming in or when you got up to the window or before you got up to the window. I do actually work in customer service and have for many many years and I’ve at least acknowledge people if I’m busy and say, "Thank you. I will be right with you. Give me just a moment." Both of which are covered by our travel insurance, so we don’t need them and were charged without our permission or knowledge. We were then told we had to take it up with our local Dollar rental agency. In my view, this is unacceptable. 3/28/21- I rented from Dollar Friday night, later flight coming into Orlando on a flight. Lines are long... not socially distanced. I booked with AAA. I get to the counter with my reservation and the guy asked me if I had basic insurance. I told him I did. I look at the total and it had gone up from $276.29 and some change to $501.71. I told the guy three times I had my own insurance and I did not want theirs. He said the total of around $501.71 was for the $200 hold fee and the rest were taxes. Next day husband tells me there is a $701 charge for the compact car at Dollar. I told him that is wrong and it should be around $500. I go out and get the rental agreement and the guy charged me for the insurance I declined but he explained the bill when I asked 3 times as the $200 fee and the rest taxes.
So a compact car is now $500. I asked him three times about these charges told him I did not want their insurance I had my own. I called customer service with Dollar. They told me to call the counter at the airport. I called every single option on the phone number given to me to get a person to get a new contract and the insurance taken off. It took me two days to get a person on the phone. I even drove to the airport and the line was 100 plus people deep to get a car.
I finally get a person on the phone after leaving the airport. He tells me the only way to get this fixed is to go to the airport to which I would have to stand in the line. He said, "You can skip the line... you already have a contract." I said, "You don’t think a lot of angry travelers are going to yell at me." He said, "No, just go to the counter and ask for a new contract." Mind you I’m on vacation and because the guy at the counter who lied to me about what was on my bill initially... I’m wasting my vacation time dealing with this.
The guy on the phone tells me customer service is not open until Monday. How in the world do you have a business and no weekend customer service. So he said they could take care of it Monday when I call again on my vacation due to guy at the counter. I tried every extension they had over the weekend even roadside assistance. No one answered and the call just hung up three times... you will just be stranded. I told the guy the issues when I was leaving on the car. He said, "I noted all of the issues with the car, cigarette hole in the seat and missing cup holder," but never looked at the car. Also, the guy at the counter murmured something about tolls. Could not hear that either. Who knows what other charges are just going to be added.
Update on 3/31/2021- finally got a hold of someone and explained to me that I could have gone to any Dollar to get these issues fixed. New to me. Too late now. "It is in the contract." The contract was verbally explained away to me by the representative at the counter. The guy at the counter will explain your bill incorrectly and ignore your request to not add insurance, then explain the charges differently than what you think they are. I would give negative stars if I could.

We then contacted the hotline again, sat on hold for 45 minutes until I was disconnected, called back, sat on hold for another 40 minutes, and were then connected to another agent. This agent told us to go to a different airport to exchange the vehicle and had us sit on hold to confirm with the new location that they were open and had a vehicle available. When we arrived at the new location 30 minutes later the agent at the counter said she never received a call or was contacted by the Roadside Assistance Agent we spoke to. Once we were in person, we upgraded our car and agreed to pay $500.48 for the upgrade, taxes, additional driver, etc... saying our total was $500.48. When we got home, we realized the $140 that we paid to Priceline was not deducted, which is NOT what the lady at the Dollar counter said. SO after talking with SEVEN agents and 1 supervisor.... We ended up paying $640.48 for a car for FOUR days.
The agents/supervisors have prewritten responses for "conflicts" and have no moral compass. The conversation is difficult to have as they sound like absolute robots. And we were asked if we'd like to prepay the tolls or pay when we were done renting. Again, we weren't sure how we could prepay for a toll when we didn't know if we'd encounter a tollway road. So when we finished the rental, we specifically asked a worker how to pay the tolls and we were told they'd send a bill and info to us. No admin fee or other extras were explained or asked if we understood.

The employee said, "Ok, I just need you to sign declining the coverages." We did not receive anything to read over, just signed on the electronic pen pad. We were given a receipt and went to pick up our car. It was a new model car and we were happy with it, until we got in. For the entire week of having the car and driving with the windows down the smell of ** never went away. Also on day 2 the brakes started making the loudest squealing noise every time to even barely touched the brakes. It was so loud it was hard to have the windows down. So we either got to smell the strong ** smell or have our ears hurt every time we brake for the entire time we drove the rental.
Fast forward to drop off. It went smooth. Then once we flew home I realized there was an extra charge on our credit card for $33.99 per day totaling $169.95 for "loss/damage coverage". I immediately reached out via Facebook messenger to figure out what this was for. Upon getting no solution over the next 2 days. I called the customer service line. I spoke with someone and explained that we declined ALL extra coverages. He said that since we signed the receipt there was nothing we could do. I explained that we weren't given anything to sign. We were just asked to sign electronically for what we were told was the car pickup. I was told he could not help me.
The next day I (finally) receive a response via messenger and was told (rudely) that we signed for the charges, there would be no refund of the fees and the decision was final and to not reach out again as there would be no further discussion on the matter. This is the worst customer service experience I have ever had. I would have expected more from such a large company. We use rental cars several times each year and have never been in one that was clearly not cleaned at all and was visibly dirty. Unfortunately Dollar was running very short on cars at the airport and we were given an upgrade to a very small SUV rather than the full-size car we had requested. Due to the lack of cars available we felt that if we complained at the time we picked it up we would have been told there aren't any other options. The customer service at the pick-up area was pretty much nonexistent. Sadly we were stuck with a small, extremely dirty SUV type vehicle.
I did contact someone at the Dollar customer service number we were given but I was simply told to fill out a form on-line. The worst part, as if the spills and dirt throughout the car weren't bad enough, the car had an overbearing smell of cigarette smoke. Yes, even with a sticker attached to the windshield of the car that warns the renter that smoking is not permitted and violators will be charged for the cleaning, someone had clearly smoked in the car and it had not been cleaned to rid the car of the smell. By the end of a week of riding in that rental car my husband and I felt horrible due to the smoke smell. In fact there was even a burn hole in the passenger seat (front).
What a disgrace and especially during Covid when most car rental companies have gone out of their way to keep cars clean and sanitized. I rented a car locally from another company and they had stickers and notes on the inside of the car letting the customer know that cleaning was done and all precautions had been taken to make the interior as safe as possible...and it was very clean. Several e-mails that were sent to me from Dollar prior to our rental talked about Clean Car guarantee and their website talks about all they do to follow CDC guidelines in regards to Covid. I can tell you Dollar at Orlando International Airport did not clean this car at all.
I understand that Covid has hit the travel related services quite hard but there is no excuse for the condition of that car and the lack of customer service. In fact during this time of Covid all companies involved in rental of items to numerous individuals should show great concern for cleanliness and safety of those items. I am requesting to hear back from someone at Dollar Rent a Car concerning this issue, we'll see what happens with that. I also want to share the pictures I took so they can see the degree of disgusting we experienced. This is our first experience with renting a car from Dollar and I can say it most likely will be our last.

I rented from Dollar (Hertz parent co) 11/25/ - 11/29/20. Unfortunately accepted EZ Pass addition. After realizing I could add a rented car to my own EZ Pass account, same day called and ask for EZ Pass agreement to be taken off. I was told it would be noted on my agreement. The 2019 Cadillac CTS I rented had a slow leak from one tire which I became aware of the following day. By the third day I decided to bring the car in for a exchange because I had enough of putting air in the tire which had cost me around $5 by then.
When I got to the airport I was told all they had available were minivans but they were going to try to fix the slow leak, about two hours later and growing impatient which the female manager detected after giving me the run-around about not having a comparable car she exchanged the CTS for a Jeep Wrangler that I saw sitting with the minivans in the parking lot when I arrived 2 hours prior. Dollar refused to credit me the additional $50 for the EZ Pass even after not using it, the toll charges were on my EZ Pass account. After filling the tank to the Jeep about 5 miles outside the airport the gas gauge had barely moved from full Dollar added $20 to my final bill for fuel charge. Dollar (Hertz) will nickel and dime you everywhere they can to get your DOLLAR, renters beware.

I am a reward customer and therefore feel as though there should be some loyalty. I rented a car on November 6 and when I did my credit card was charged $469. $269 for the weekly rental and $200 for the hold. I was fine with that since that is what I agreed to. Later on that night I get an alert from a separate credit card saying that they were also charged $269. I called Dollar Rental to find out why they charged this separate card $269 since they already charged my other card the $269 plus the $200 for the hold. They had no idea what I was talking about and told me that since it wasn’t associated with the rental it would just fall off.
Well I can assure you that this charge never fell off and I called my credit card company only to be told that I need to call Dollar Rental. I called dollar rental once again and asked to speak to a supervisor and I was told that I could not speak to a supervisor and that that $269 would fall off once I return the car. I once again explained that it should’ve never been charged in the first place since they already received my money on the other credit card. They refused to listen to me and when I asked to speak to a supervisor they hung up on me.
I rent pretty much every six weeks from them and I will no longer use them. There are many rental companies that I could choose but I chose them because I was impressed with them. I am also notifying anyone fellow colleague who runs a huge corporation and also uses them. I am sure he will be amused to find out how I was treated and will pull his business as well. I feel horrible as I was treated horribly and I feel for anyone who uses them especially if this is how they treat their loyal customers.

Don't use Dollar rental. They will literally steal money out of your account. I rented a car for a few days which I paid 230$. After I returned the car I was charged 200 in additional fees. I have no idea what they are. I've called endlessly and I can't get thru. Now I got another bill for 71$ for their toll pass. Which I paid for when I rented the car. Trust me this company is a SCAM! They should be put right out of business. I'm making it a personal mission to let everyone know that Dollar is one of the worst companies out there.

I recently booked a Dollar car rental which was subsequently cancelled as my client advised he had Covid symptoms/concerns. I notified Dollar 7-10 days in advance and was surprised to find they still charge cancellation fees even though Covid was the reason - an extremely tone-deaf policy considering the impact on the economy. A better policy might be to apply the deposit towards a future rental? Notwithstanding, I feel a touch of corporate greed and as such will never rent from Dollar again. Shame.

I guess Dollar/Hertz's bankruptcy troubles are making them desperate for money because they are quickly becoming the company known for tacking on wrongful and fraudulent fees. I picked up my on September 18th at the Portland airport in Maine, which was deserted. The car they gave me REEKED of smoke. But there was no one at the pick-up place to complain to. I left with the intention of reporting it the next day. (Learned my lesson there. Dollar will give you a disgusting car and then blame YOU for it!) Well, you can't get through to anyone by phone at Dollar. The customer service center was closed all weekend. Then they don't answer the phone during the week. They automated service actually put me on hold for an hour (during my vacation) and then disconnected the line! I had no recourse to report the damage. (Dollar eventually blamed me for "not filing a report.")
After a thoroughly unpleasant 10 days in a car that made my clothes and hair stink of smoke, I went to return it the car on September 27th at their Park Plaza location in Boston intending to complain. Wouldn't you know, there was no one at the drop-off location for me to report it to. It was another deserted parking garage. There were no vacuum cleaners to clean it myself, nothing.
Then I get my bill and they charged me $400 for "damage." It took me 2 hours (not kidding) to get through by phone to a customer service rep and find out what exactly I was being charged for. Smoke, they said. I explained that I do not smoke. I did not smoke in the car and the car was delivered to me that way. That I tried to report it, but could not due to non-existent customer service. He said there was nothing he could do. I asked to speak to his manager. Another 45 minutes on hold. That guy said there was nothing he could do and suggested I write to Hertz customer relations.
I emailed with 5 different customer service agents, each one even less effectual and more terrible than the last. They truly do not care. In their mind, the customer is always wrong. In the last exchange they sent me a photo of the damage. There was some sand on the gearshift. Unbelievable. I wrote back, So now it's sand, not smoke? Make up your mind. Also, do you not have a vacuum cleaner? $400 for sand?? Their story kept changing. Smoke. Sand. “You didn't file a report.” Basically anything to shift blame. Clearly, they are understaffed, both at their pickup and drop-off locations and at their customer service centers. But instead of being accountable and owning their mistakes, they blame the customer and tack on wrongful fees to boot. Why are they allowed to get away with this? It's fraud. Do not rent with Dollar or Hertz. What kind of company doesn't take the word of its customers? Oh, one that's in bankruptcy. Good luck with that!

I was flabbergasted, What? She said that they have the policy that they only take credit cards or debit cards with chips! They have only machines with the chip reader only! No swipe!
Instructions from the General manager! So I was told I could go to another car rental business, they take cards without chips which was Alamo. Dollar could not accept my credit card because it does not have a chip! and I was not able to use my credit card at the Atlanta International Airport location that I use all the time at Dollar, Thrifty and Hertz, which I had used 2 weeks prior to that at the DCA location and in July at the Atlanta location. I agreed to adding on the "Fuel Option" to my agreement and only that. I Did not agree to adding anything else. I signed the estimate and went on my way to enjoy my vacation. It wasnt until I actually received my credit card statement that I saw I was charged from both CarRentals.com and Dollar Rent a Car. Looked at my estimate and final agreement from Dollar and then noticed they had on there that they said I had "agreed" to LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) $271.92. $33.99 per day. If I was actually asked, I most definitely would deny this option. But they charged me for it.
First call to Dollar, I was on hold for 35 mins before a rep came on. Talked for a bit and she put me on hold again a few times and then the call just ended. Almost an hour of my time spent on the phone for nothing. Next day, called again. Spoke to another rep and then a supervisor. I was told "I am sorry, but you signed the estimate and you have returned the car and it is now a "closed" contract. We can not give you a refund. Next time You should read everything and ask questions."

We rented a car for pickup at Stuttgart airport in Germany. The price looked right. Two problems. One, the receptionist told us that no one that had held a driving license for less than a year could rent a car - per Hertz (parent company) policy. I am 61 years old and have been driving for over 40 years - but I moved to Nevada from California in mid 2019 and so have held a Nevada driver's license for less than a year. Fortunately I had a photo of my old California license on my phone and that was deemed to be evidence enough - although I would have been stuck if I did not happen to have the photo available.
The bigger issue was that we were told that - per Hertz company policy - we could not rent the car without also signing up for all the related insurance coverages. That had the effect of more than doubling our rental expense. Nowhere prior to our rental had I been informed or notified of this requirement - nor have I seen it with any other car rental company. It all seemed a bit scammy to me. I won't be renting from Dollar or Hertz again.

I used Dollar Car rental for the first time. I gave them the benefit of the doubt despite some of the BAD reviews. I received an amazing quote for SUV at the location at phoenix sky harbor airport. The check in process was pretty smooth. They sent me out to the parking lot to a Nissan Pathfinder. Not a bad vehicle. The front and back bumper were heavily beat up and dented. I told the guy at the gate and he said we know they get damaged from people taking luggage in and out. Okay, its only rental no biggy, I moved on.
Fast forward to the return date. I arrive at the airport at 330 am. The gentleman walks around the car checks and says you are good to go. I asked about a receipt he said he would email me. 3 days went by no receipt. I check my credit card statement and I was billed almost double the amount. I call the car rental place. You cannot talk to anybody at the location. I believe it was a call center in another country. I call the guy said he will send me a receipt right away and open a ticket for someone to call me from corporate. I said cant I talk to someone now. He said NO. He has to email corporate and they will contact me.
This time I receive the receipt via email. I was appalled went I saw the receipt. I returned the car on a Monday at 330 AM. It showed I returned the car on WED 11:47 am. Which was impossible as I was already back home. They charged me a late fee each day and double the daily rate of what my special rate was. I called back furious. Told the guy I see what happened. He explained he noted it in the email to corporate.
3 days went by and nobody contacted me, so I called my credit card company to dispute the overcharges. They went ahead and refunded me the difference. Then I started getting collection notices that dollar rental sent me to collections. I called back and then they said they escalated to corporate, then I receive an email from some guy who has a title of team lead who tells me nothing they can do as I reported them to my credit card. I responded it makes no sense. They said, "If you retract your dispute from the credit card company we will be able to assist. Otherwise there is nothing further we can do."
So then I call the better business bureau to get involved. They were able to contact someone at corporate and forward me their response. Dollar rental said: we are sorry to hear this happened, we ceased all collections of your debt with us. We have contacted the location and will develop a plan go forward. The better business bureau asked me I was satisfied. I said no, they never acknowledged they made a mistake and ignored all of my communications. In September of 2019, I reserved a rental car with Dollar Rent A Car for my family's use while on vacation in Los Cabos, Mexico over the Christmas Holidays. The total for the one-week rental was estimated at $202.29 on the reservation I made through Priceline. When we arrived in Los Cabos on Monday, December 23, 2019, the Dollar Rent A Car counter attendants told us there were no vehicles available, and while they acknowledged our reservation, they said they could do nothing about it, nor did they really seem to care. We asked what they expected us to do next, and they simply shrugged and went back to their social conversations.
After calling Priceline and Dollar's customer service lines for a half hour without any help, but a lot of waiting on hold, we started approaching other rental car companies at the same counter. They all claimed that they were short on cars and the cost would be about $600-$800 to get a car for the week. There was no shopping to be done, because as we went from one rental agency to the next at the same counter, they all colluded to extort a high price from the foreign tourists. Finally, after haggling with Thrifty Car Rental (which I knew to be a sister company to Dollar, both of which are owned by Hertz, and may be a source to solve the problem), refusing all forms of insurance that I could (which involved getting my insurance agent in the U.S. on the phone and putting down a credit card deposit of $4,000), we ended up getting a beat-up sedan for $464.79.
Then on our second to last day of vacation, the car would not start due to a dead battery and we had to forego our day of activities to spend time on the telephone trying to persuade Thrifty to send out a replacement car or to replace the battery in the car we had. The valets at the hotel stated that all of the rental car companies in the area put secondhand parts into the rental cars and dead batteries are a common occurrence for Dollar and Thrifty. We lost an entire day of our vacation!
When we returned the car, the attendants were very well aware of what had happened from start to finish, and when I asked for a day's worth of credit on the final bill, they smiled at me and said "sorry." The entire experience with Dollar and Thrifty was a complete rip-off. Initially, we thought the lack of an available car was just our bad luck, but then we overheard other customers from Canada and the U.S. being deceived in exactly the same manner as we had been. They were also told that they had to pay for "special Mexican car insurance" which typically ran $600-$800, or they would have to put down incredibly large deposits as we were required to do to avoid the charges.
When Americans deal with American companies abroad, they expect the same level of respect and customer service that they would get in the U.S. Those are typically the reasons that we try to use U.S. vendors when we travel abroad. Not so with Dollar and Thrifty. Both fell incredibly far short of that, and in effect, colluded to steal from us the additional cost of the car, and to try to steal from us the costs of the "special Mexican car insurance." Mind you that the $4,000 we had to pay on our credit card was not just a hold on our credit card, but an actual payment that we had to hope to have returned when we returned the car. The entire transaction put a cloud over our entire vacation.
Dollar and Thrifty are both low grade rental car companies that I would never recommend to anyone to use. Personally, my family members will never rent from either one ever again, in the U.S. or abroad. At this point, now three months after all of this took place, I am still arguing with Priceline, Dollar and Thrifty to get any sort of credit back for all that occurred with respect to this car rental. None of the three have responded with any sort of consideration for even a credit against a future rental from them. It really shows how low grade they are as companies.

I used a discount site to book my car rental and thought I was getting a reasonable deal. I really don't like how they quoted a certain car and added OR SIMILAR to the rental information. I felt that the car I received, while in the mid-sized car class, was NOT in the same QUALITY classification. I only needed the car for a minimal time, so I was going to be OK with the car they assigned. It turned out to be the least of my concerns.
The real problem came when the counter agent asked if I wanted to purchase their insurance. Having gone through this before before I politely said NO. The agent then countered EVERY NO THANK YOU with another reason why I needed their insurance. He even went as far as asking me what my personal car insurance deductible was....NONE OF HIS BUSINESS...THAT'S WHAT! While I know it's their job to inform customers and try to sell their extras, I felt that if I didn't FINALLY AGREE, I wasn't going to get out of the airport and get to my destination. It was extreme pressure to purchase and I don't appreciate this business tactic.
Then when I needed to extend my rental, ALL OF ONE HOUR, I had to purchase insurance for another day. INSURANCE THAT I DIDN'T WANT IN THE FIRST PLACE. It's not even just the insurance. There was this fee and that fee that added up to a ridiculous amount of money. I brought my own Toll booth transponder, so I didn't need to rent theirs or pay their outrageous fees for not having one AND filled up the car with gas before returning, but the final cost of this car rental was absolutely ridiculous.
I've only rented a car twice before...from other car rental businesses, I should add, so maybe this is my inexperience, but the other times I haven't walked way feeling that I was taken to the cleaners just for a 3 day car rental. I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND DOLLAR CAR RENTAL TO ANYONE! I plan on making their headquarters know my experience, so hopefully no one else has this experience.

Got my rental from Orlando FL airport terminal. Explained did not need insurance because did reservation online and purchased 3rd party insurance online already. Even showed the representative the email that was sent to me. The representative then told me to put my card in the machine and agree to charges as there was also a 200 deposit to get car. So on top of the 200 deposit Dollar also charged $15.88 charge per day for “LIS”. Just found out that the “LIS” stands for the insurance on my receipt.
I was charged even when I told the representative I did not want or needed the insurance. Called customer service and even spoke to a manager and all they said is that I “agreed” to it so it cannot be refunded. SO BE WARNED, EVEN IF YOU LET REP KNOW DON’T NEED THE “LIS” THEY WILL STILL CHARGE...DON’T RENT HERE. They are bunch of crooks. Oh btw they are a subsidiary of Hertz. The young lady said I would get 100% of my money back. As it turned out they refunded all but 50.00. When I called and ask where the other 50 was, they stated that I was going to get a 50 gift cert from their parent company Hertz.. Also when I went to the local office of Dollar they had a notice on the counter stating that you have to leave a 200.00 deposit when I pick up the car. This was never disclosed when I paid. They might be the cheaper of car rental companies but BUYER BEWARE OF THE HIDDEN/UNDISCLOSED COST. I still have the 50 dollar cert. for which expires in June that I will never use.

For the most part, Dollar it is pretty good with their service except for yesterday 2/19/2020 I flew in from Dallas at Lawton, Ft Sill Airport in Oklahoma. I had already paid in full online for my rental and when I get there, my vehicle was rented out to someone else. I ask the lady at the desk why she rented out my car so gave the excuse that I stated I was going to be there by 10am when I specifically stated my time of arrival and I even provided my flight Itinerary stating my flight was due in by 5:45pm.
Needless to say, I almost got left stranded at the airport due to her poor decision making, lucky for me I was able to get the last vehicle standing by Hertz at a much cheaper price than Dollar. Regardless when I arrive at the airport, if I paid in full for a rental, then my vehicle should remain available until I arrive. Next time I will call every hour on the hour 12 hours before arriving or until they get sick of me calling just to drive my point across. I had to make sure my money was reimbursed too.

We reserved a vehicle online for $49 to be ready at 10:30 for pick up and the reservation was confirmed by Dollar Rent A Car. My sister-in-law and I paid for transportation to their location on 16th Street from the Miami Ship Port only to be told they did not have our car available for at least 4 hours. The manager gave us three options:
2. Rent an SUV at $95, almost twice the price we were quoted. (The manager refused to allow us to have any other car at the $49 price they agreed to online).
3. He told us we could try another rental place 2 blocks away.
Mind you, we paid to get to his place of business and our ride left us there, we had several pieces of luggage with us, and we are both over 60 years of age. There was no offer to help us with this situation, even when I called their customer service department. I would not recommend this company to anyone. If I could, I would have given Dollar zero stars. BEWARE! By the way, apparently, Dollar is now owned by THRIFTY, so I would be wary of them, too.

I rented a car on line from Dollar Rent A Car at Tampa Airport. The car was old and noisy to drive, lots of squeaking and creaking. When I picked the car I was told to return it full of gas, and to make sure I fill up from a gas station within 10 miles from the airport and bring a receipt as proof of filling up! I agreed as I always bring any rental car full. However, on my way to Tampa from Sarasota to return the car after my holiday there was no gas station within 10 miles on I 275 without going miles out of my way to the airport. I returned to the airport with gas tank half full thinking it's not a big deal to pay for half tank of gas. I was charged $85 for half a tank on Chevy Malibu. I almost filled the tank for $23.50 a few days before. When I expressed my disappointment they said they charge $10 for gallon of gas that you pay $2.35 in a gas station, plus tax! I would never rent a car from this dishonest place, there are so many decent car rental companies out there.

Please do not rent from this company or Thrifty. I've rented from every company between the lower and higher Fox, E-Z, Hertz, Enterprise, etc. And have never experienced the joke of a service company named "Dollar\Thrifty". Reserved a SUV online through this company because it was one of the better prices by a small margin ($195 for SUV 4 days). I'm used to being thorough with my traveling experiences, so after booking I called the company (Dollar) because the confirmation gave me a car group acronym and not the words SUV. I was told on the phone that they looked up my reservation, and found that the car group code was indeed for the SUV. They gave me a number to call back if I had any trouble.
A few weeks later when I go to pick up the vehicle, I check in and was told that my reservation was for a smaller vehicle. After talking with them more I find the vehicle I actually reserved online was not even available. I called the number that they have given me, and the manager across the room answered, and simply said looks like the reservation on their end changed. And offered me an upgraded vehicle for $1330 extra! Or I could just take a pick up truck which I elected to do for a discount of $350.. They didnt take me to the car, and just showed me where it was by pointing and adding keys are in the car.
I walked up to a car covered in soot and grime. The inside still had trash from the last person that used it. I decided to just deal with it because I was already running behind. I go to the check out station, and the guy working asked for the miles, any visible damage, and asked about the fuel. I gave him all the information and added that the vehicle was a little under a full tank. I was told to make sure it's about full when I return...
Finished the trip, and was running late for the airport, decided to play it safe and return the car with 1/3 of a tank. (Should have taken a photos) I ended up paying $195 in fuel charges. They had me pay for a full tank plus some. After telling them that it was not a full tank when I started, they responded by saying there is no record of the vehicle being less than full. The person I was working with seemed almost like they were getting a kick out of my concerns for the crazy charges that I had been issued. I have doubts that they even looked at the vehicle before renting it out in the first place. Needless to say this is a company that I will always advise against doing business. The only reason I can think of them deserving 1 star is because the shuttle drivers were good. A good lesson is dont always go with the cheapest option, make sure you read reviews, and never give Dollar/Thrifty any of your money.

I spoke to the manager about needing to visit with my sick father and need to get on the road. She apologized and said she would help, but needed to get payroll done! The car I received must have been on the way out of the fleet. It had out of balance tires, lots of road noise and had been run hard for the 40k miles (which is high anyway for a rental). Upon return the agent indicated she was sorry for the condition of the rental (Toyota Camary). Two things, I will be hesitant to rent from Dollar in the future and will avoid Toyota as a potential future purchase. TL;DR This place lies to you, charges you extra, then tries to blame you. Look at the reviews on Yelp, they are scamming lots of people. Reporting them to the FTC. Last year, over an hour wait to get a car. This year's wait (12/23) was short, but they don't have the car type we reserved, which I know happens and that was ok. But the service desk then lies and says they'll give us a different car type for no additional charge or we could sit and wait for the original car type we booked. The service agent then starts talking quiet and says she could even save us money by us taking this other car type. I thought, it's Christmas they want to get rid of specific car types that people aren't renting and I was fine taking anything as there were just two of us.
We verified with the employee by showing her our original charge via email ~$530 and she said "Yep, you will save around $200." She pointed out a total cc authorization on our new receipt of ~$360 and said that would be our end price paid and we would get a refund because we had prepaid more than that. When we returned the car, they wanted to charge us $167 beyond our original charge for the "upgrade" we took. We went back to the service desk and was told to see the manager, Rosaria (or a name similar to this) at the office in the garage. Went to the garage and asked for Rosaria the manager and a male employee said "You can deal with me." Asked again for a manager and he repeated "You can deal with me." Never gave us his name or said he was a manager. When we discussed our issue with this male employee he very rudely said it was our fault and we "should of checked our bill" or " should of verified this rate with multiple employees."
When I told him that was BS he said "lots of customers do this." I told him I was following up with this and asked for his name and he refused to give us his name or a business card. He said he could "knock the extra charge in half" then at the end of the conversation said he was only authorized to take off $75 of the $167. I guess we fell for a typical 'bait and switch'. Shady employees at a shady company. Don't give them your business. If you have no choice, make sure to verify everything on your receipt with multiple employees as the "manager" suggested/s I'll update this if I get a response. If this isn't resolved, reporting them to the FTC and disputing the charges on my credit card as this is a total scam being ran at this location. Look at the reviews on Yelp, they are scamming people left and right by lying to them or adding charges to their receipt without telling them.
UPDATE: Their customer service said because I signed a contract they will do nothing. They lied, mislead me, and misrepresented the contract to steal money. Submitting a report to the FTC and I suggest you do the same if they scam you.

Then we had to wait for the car to be delivered from the original location. I returned the car to the desk a day early (a Sunday) only to receive a call on Wednesday asking why I had not returned the car.... It took a half hour to resolve the issue. Then I received a toll charge for a state that I was not even in for $112 dollars. It took two hours on the phone to resolve this. My credit card was still charged for a toll for a state that I had not been near. Dollar attempted to recover processing fees for tolls in the state not visited. I would not recommend Dollar. I've used them for the last 2-3 years because they are typically the cheapest option and as long as nothing goes wrong they're good. BUT my last car rental I had to modify because my rental dates changed and EVERYTHING went wrong. I pre-paid and with the price change of the modified rental they owed me a reimbursement.
Bad experience #1: Called customer service to see how/when I would be reimbursed. They couldn't answer my question so they transferred me. I discovered that Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty are all part of the same company because I got transferred to Hertz. They told me "Your confirmation number is from a 3rd party, we can't help". I got transferred 4 times back and forth between Hertz and Dollar before the call stopped for no reason.
Bad experience #2: Even though I was told on the phone (eventually I called back and got an answer) that I would be reimbursed in 1-2 weeks, I wasn't. So I emailed. I emailed the dollar.com customer service email from their contact info and received an email back from someone with a Hertz email address and a thrifty signature saying they couldn't help me because I booked through someone else. (I know! that's why I emailed Dollar, not you *facepalm*.) Bad experience #3: I finally got the thrifty-hertz email to realize they couldn't actually help and they said they would refund about $130 when I had overpaid about $600.
Bad experience #4: I finally disputed the charge through my credit card because it had taken over a month and they had only conceded to refund about $250. (#chasebank is awesome). Then I received a bill in the mail from Hertz. Ironically, it's not for the $600-$130 or $600-$250, which would at least be consistent with their previous communication. They sent me a bill for $600-$360. No explanation where that number came from and very inconsistent with the emails. *Still haven't resolved this last issue: my rental was in October and it's now January. Dollar may be cheap, but it'll cost you in the long run. Save yourself stress, money, and time by using someone else. And while your at it, avoid Hertz and Thrifty too. *credit where credit is due, their in person staff tend to be very nice. But, the in person people can't help with these things.

My Husband and I went on vacation last week to Texas. We decided to rent a car for the first time for both of us and it turned out to be a terrible experience. We started out by making the reservation on December 18, 2019 and we were flying into Houston, Texas on December 19th. We picked out the car and made notes that we didn’t want the insurance or car side assistant services.
We flew in and took the shuttle to the rental car facility. I went to the bathroom to freshen up and when I got back my husband was in a panic. The lady at the desk TOLD (did not ask or explain) that my husband NEEDED insurance and the car side assistant services with the deposit which was totaled at $557 INCLUDING the $300 I already put down the night before. The lady helping us to our car demanded us to get in our car, leave and deal with the pricing later.
When we got to our family members house, we called. We got transferred to 4 different people. The very first one told us we would be able to cancel our insurance and it wouldn’t be a big deal, yet we kept getting transferred with no one actually helping us. The last person we talked to told us we needed to call the actual airport office. So, we did. It rang and rang someone answered than hung up on us. We dealt with this issue for over 2 hours. We couldn’t go back to the airport right then. We called the next morning in which the lady we talked to rudely told us we need to talk to corporate and that’s the number we called then she told us we would have to go back in. We drove over 50 miles BACK to the airport because no one on the phone could help us. When we arrived, we still had to pay for 2 days of insurance. Which was over $100.
Not only did you ruin TWO days of our trip by wasting our time on the phone, making us drive back to the airport, but we still ended up paying for something we shouldn’t have in the first place. We specifically told you on our reservation we didn’t want or need insurance. Not one person was able to help us on the phone, no one picked up at the office and we didn’t get one apology or even a damn coupon to even remotely look responsible for not helping your customers. You took advantage of us and to me that is just terrible customer service, and unprofessionalism.

And when I present the voucher at the Dollar window, the clerk, not even looking in my face, asked me where the third party insurance was. Said he didn't own and didn't want to. The clerk said she would not hand over the vehicle key until I got the insurance. I passed 1 toll and they charge me $50. I called customer care to understand the charge. Customer service people were rude and one of them hung my call with no reason after waiting for few minutes online. It seems Dollar will charge $12.49/day if you cross 1 toll or 100 tolls. So my trip was for 4 days and I crossed 1 toll, my total charge was 4*12.49 = ~$50. One toll cost me $50. Bad experience teaches a lesson, never rent a Dollar.

I guess they were happy they did their dirty business and scammed another customer since there was no dollar amount on the electronic pad that we signed and we were told we are signing for picking up the car.
Preying on the tourists is what they do because since we declined insurance it never crossed our minds that they will add it anyway and made you sign for it without your knowledge. Forget about seeing your money ever again because they will argue that you purchased insurance and signed for it. Awful company that figured out how to scam people and nothing you can do about it.

I recently booked a rental with Dollar in Pittsburgh, PA as I needed to travel for my grandmother's funeral. I went with Dollar because it was the best deal I could find. When I booked my reservation online the price provided was $105.55 however upon returning my car in a drop off line where no person could be found, I received an email letting me know my final bill was $267.16. The major difference was that the per day rate quoted online when I placed my reservation was $20.71 but when I received my final bill the per day rate was listed at $82.29. Not a soul around I could speak with to resolve my problem so I am currently waiting on a return email. Not the type of customer service you want. I would have ranked 0 stars if I could have.

The process of renting through Dollar Rental Car was very confusing for a first time car renter. At check out, the cost of the rental was different than the estimate I was given when I reserved the car by over $100. I asked about this and they told me that they had added a bunch of insurance services. It wasn't clear that these were optional until I pressed harder in questioning. They also didn't go over any other policies (including the policy of how much it would cost to not return the car with a full tank). So, when I returned the car with half a tank of gas left in it, they overcharged me for 3/4th of a tank. When I called to report this and get the added amount refunded, they said that they couldn't verify that this was the case because I had not taken a picture that could prove this.
I was able to get a one-time $30 refund after speaking for a while with the customer service agent, but the overall experience was incredibly frustrating. It seemed like their system was purposefully unclear and designed to result in overcharges that the consumer would have to pay. It was very complicated for a person who hasn't rented cars very often, which shouldn't be the case.

When you drive through a toll that has no option for cash and only allows E-Z Pass or Bill-By-Plate service, Dollar Car rental is practicing unethical business! They give you only two choices. 1) You can rent ez pass tag for $16 or they will pay ez pass for you and charge you $15 admin fee. So in other words. If you are driving through the tall of $5 (example) you will pay either 5+16 or 5+15. They do not give you an option to just simply legally pay for the toll. Period.

Rented a car from Dollar in Orlando after flying for 12 hours. The attendant was hard to understand and constantly unclear. We had booked thru Expedia and bundled in the rental car. Big mistake, when being processed for my ID and credit card, I didn't opt for extra insurance for an additional driver or the prepaid toll plan and have three other people to prove it. Yet when I returned the car they charged me a total of $1200 for the compact car that I drove a handful of times.
I phoned to clarify and they said they charged $14 for not filling the fuel tank upon return, I informed them I had in fact filled it upon return and the other $400 charge is for additional insurance I apparently purchased... I explained that I didn't not opt for the additional insurance and that their Rep had scammed me, but they are refusing to comply, so I have paid $1200 for a compact car that was scratched all over and the brakes grinded metal on metal. DO NOT USE DOLLAR RENT A CAR. I DID AND WILL NEVER AGAIN.

I was traveling to Halifax Canada. I pre-booked the car for $282.76. When I got to the airport, I got extra insurance and bought the tank of gas, so I could return it empty. After that and taxes, the final bill was $487.39. Now, I assumed that was part of the $282.76 I paid with my pre-booking. IT WAS NOT. I ended up paying $770.15 for 5 days with a compact Hyundai. Of course the bill I signed at the airport never mentioned that I'd still be charged the $282.76, it just said $487.39. I just called them and was told this was not in error, that's how much they're taking from me, and there's not a thing I can do about it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

This is the biggest lie!!! I will never rent from Dollar again. The ** they pulled on me when I used my debit card a few days ago to rent a car was the biggest headache and lie I’ve ever seen from a rental car company. And you can bet I’m telling everyone I know and will post this nonsense company on all social media review sites.

The daily rate shown on our receipt and charged to our card was almost three times higher than in our original confirmation email. Nothing changed - same class of car, same dates, etc. No response from customer support.

We reserved a 'premium' car back in August and when we arrived for our 10:30 pick-up we were told there were no cars available!!! This has NEVER happened before in my 30+ years of car rentals. Excuse me? Yes, the employee says, it happens ALL the time. We're told it would be a 30 min. wait.... OK.... 2 hours later still no cars. We call the 800 number and are told after much waiting a car will be available later that day / evening. We finally UBER to our hotel ($20) after we give our name and number and employee said we'll get a call when a car becomes available. 5:30 rolls by, we call and call and no one answers the phone at the airport location's direct line.
We call the 800 number again and told to call the direct line. 6 o'clock, we finally get through to the counter employee. No apologies, no explanation, no premium car. He did find us a car though so we rush back to the airport (another $20 UBER ride) and pick up the car. Fortunately it was a decent car. The whole experience was stressful, angering, and we were not able to do things we had planned to do before leaving Knoxville the following morning. So I would give a zero if I could. Terrible terrible terrible customer service here.
